LOILO CITY - In a first for Region 6, the three-day 2023 Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) - National Convention, began 24th October, hosted the 101st PNA Founding Anniversary and 66th Nurses Week Celebration, with the theme "Gearing Up for Global Health Challenges with Renewed Vitality." With over 2,700 delegates, the convention advanced with National President of the PNA Melvin D. Miranda, RN, MAN declaring open the convention, followed by Chairman of the Board of the PNA, Inc., Joseph Stephen A. Descallar, RN, MAN, DM, led the Candle Lighting and Renewal of the Pledge of Fidelity. In an astounding show of support for the healthcare division, Keynote Speaker, Hon. Lorenz R. Defensor, Iloilo’s 3rd District Representative, commended the tireless care and dedication of nurses, even in an ongoing global health crisis, emphasizing the need for increased government investment and said, “It’s about time to take care of the nurses in the country.”

As anticipation mounted for this year’s three prestigious and most pursued national recognitions for worthy Filipino nurses, the Huwarang Nars ng Bayan was awarded to Stephen Henry L. Chin, RN of Cotabato Chapter, the Most Outstanding Chapter of the Year was granted to PNA - La Union Chapter, and; finally, the Anastacia Giron Tupas Award was given to Clarito D. Curato, RN, MAN, Ed.D of NCR Zone 1 PNA Manila Chapter. Following an open forum session on the first day, the status of Senate Bill No. 17, or the Nursing Comprehensive Bill of 2022, was questioned, ensuring its re-enrollment to the 19th Congress with the support of Sen. Francis Tolentino and Rep. Defensor; its progress on the introduction of Advanced Practice Nursing in the Philippines; and the fight for equal pay for nurses in both the public and private sectors were raised. Over the three days of the convention, ten plenary sessions were held, from bridging the gap for PAGE 2
