Instead of going with traditional colors, I decided to make the girl in mostly cool colors along with the pop of pink in her outfit. This was done entirely with Arteza markers to create a colorful and eyecatching piece.

Active Minds at L&C Actively Looking for Leadership Team: How Can You Apply?

By Jenna Shelton jshelton@lc.edu One of Lewis and Clark Community College’s newest clubs on campus is currently taking applications for their leadership team, including all of their executive board positions to finish the 2020/2021 academic year and for next year as well.

Active Minds at L&C is a club that started originally on campus in August of 2019 but due to the pandemic lost its’ traction and is needing a new diverse and strong group of individuals to fill the open positions to ensure that the club can begin operating in the fashion that it was before covid.

Active Minds is a club that is meant to be for students and run by students. Acting-Interim President of Active Minds Damion Posey wants anyone applying to understand what Active Minds truly means and why it was started before they apply. “I think it’s important to understand what their organization is even about before you get involved in it. Once you hear what Active Minds is about and what they do though, you’ll definitely want to be involved in it.”, Posey said.

The Active Minds National Chapter was originally formed by Alison Malmon when she was a junior at the University of Pennsylvania. Malmon was inspired to start Active Minds after her only sibling and older brother, Brian Marlon, was lost to suicide during his senior year at Columbia University.

After being described as a smart, popular and fun student throughout high school, Brian Marlon struggled with depression and psychosis shortly after arriving at Columbia University. Hiding his symptoms from everyone for three years, Marlon started treatment for schizoaffective disorder during a home visit in his senior year, but his underlying depression was not addressed.

Continuing to hide his symptoms and disorders from friends, Brian’s depression was left untreated and he returned to school. A Page 5

year and a half later, on Mar. 24, 2000, Brian Marlon ended his life.

Alison realized that there were many people that had stories similar to Brian’s and they too were suffering in silence, thinking they were totally alone. In reality, a majority of mental illnesses strike for the first time between the ages of 14 to 24 years old, when youths are still in school or college. It has also been found that suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, so Alison recognized that continuing to be silent about mental illness and suicide was no longer an option.

Malmon saw at Penn that no one was talking about mental illness; the stigma and shame was preventing students from speaking out and letting those one of every five college students who are living in silence continue to do so, without the support of their peers.

Malmon felt if people started talking about it, maybe things would get better. She wanted to encourage students who need help to seek it; she wanted to prevent tragedies like her brothers and combat the stigma of mental illness. Finding nothing like that already in existence on her campus, Alison created her own, naming it “Open Minds” at the time. Their number one goal was to spread the word that seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of; it is actually a sign of strength.

Within two years, Malmon had graduated, but the group had continued and word had spread. Other colleges had reached out and opened their own chapters. Soon, a national office was opened in Washington, D.C. and the group was made into a nonprofit. The name was changed to “Active Minds” to reflect the groups focus on student advocacy and action in mental health.

In the 16 years that Active Minds has been in schools and on campuses throughout the

country, they have been able to reach out to over 600,000 students every year with the different events, campaigns, programs, advocacy, outreach and other awareness activities they host.

The major goals for Active Minds at L&C include changing conversations about mental health, increasing awareness of pertinent mental health issues among all members of the campus community. This includes conveying the message that psychological disorders (such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc) are prevalent among college students, as are suicide, substance abuse, and other mental health crises, and that there are many resources, both on campus and off campus, that can assist these students in their time of need.

Another important purpose of Active Minds at L&C is to establish liaisons between resources, both on campus and off campus, and the entire campus community. Active Minds aims to act as an ‘outreach’ for such departments and organizations like counseling and mental health services, facilitating students’ access to these important resources that are crucial to their academic and social success.

Active Minds recognizes the fact that many students faced with mental health crises do not seek the help they need because they are embarrassed, ashamed, or fear repercussions from family members, friends, or peers if these people discover the student has “problems” and must seek professional help. This is due to the unfortunate stigma that surrounds psychological disorders, as well as the seeking of professional help for such disorders. Active Minds at L&C hopes to emphasize the fact that recovering from a mental health problem is contingent upon seeking professional help and guidance, and that it is “okay not to be okay”.

With all of these goals planned, Active Minds at L&C will need a full executive board to accomplish them. The current executive positions available to apply for and the descriptions of the duties for each position are: Campus News

President: Duties of the President A. An elected President will preside over Active Minds meetings, will maintain the power to appoint all committee chairpersons, shall present all motions to the body present, and shall be present at 90% of the meetings of Active Minds.

B. The President will serve as Student Government Association (SGA) liaison, and as a liaison between the organization and all other related organizations/authorities on campus and in the community. They must be available every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of at 1pm for a meeting as the SGA representative for Active Minds.

C. The President will have the authority to deposit and withdraw funds from any Active Minds accounts, with the secondary signature of either the Treasurer or the Advisor.

D. The President will serve as the primary contact person for the Active Minds national office, will be responsible for staying abreast of all national programming, keeping the chapter in good standing with the national organization and the university, and communicating with the Chapter Coordinator as assigned to L&C by the national office.

E. Lead, direct, delegate, and manage.

Vice-President: Duties of the Vice President A. An elected Vice President will share all of the President’s responsibilities with the exception of those related to the SGA and the Active Minds accounts.

B. It will be the responsibility of the Vice President to ensure that active members fulfill the requirements for active membership each semester.

C. The Vice President will preside over meetings in the absence of the President.

D. Reinforce and back-up Chapter president functions.

Secretary: - Duties of the Secretary A. An elected Secretary will take attendance, record the minutes at each meeting and report the minutes via email and/or at the beginning of the next meeting.

B. The Secretary will be responsible of all correspondence associated with the organization, including solicitation and Campus News

C. The Secretary will maintain a list of current members and add new members to theActive Minds listserv as necessary.

D. The Secretary will reserve and book all necessary meeting rooms and event spaces.

E. The Secretary takes and distributes minutes of all club meetings, recorder keeper (current and past members, files minutes, etc), club historian, notify members of meetings, and handles the official correspondence of the club.

F. Observe, communicate, and disseminate.

Treasurer/Fundraising Chair: Duties of the Treasurer A. An elected Treasurer will maintain record of all Active Minds financial transactions; will deposit all club funds in the Student Activity Association Inc., Accounting Office; shall maintain books of the account; and reconcile monthly statements.

B. The Treasurer will be responsible for submitting a budget proposal to the SGA at the beginning and end of each semester of the year.

C. The Treasurer will work with other members of the Executive Board when preparing the budget proposal.

D. Regularly reports the chapter’s financial status to the board and members.

E. Budget, plan, fundraise, design, and coach.

The following positions are not on the executive board but are just as important and need to be filled with people that are responsible, creative, and self-driven individuals too.

Outreach Chair: Partner with other organizations/clubs and the community, collaborate, connect with students and others to educate and share available resources, program/plan.

Communications/Social Media Chair: Publicize, post, message and manage Active Minds social media accounts and web page. Work with Media Services or The Bridge to make appropriate adver-

tisements and flyers for events and resources.

Community/Campus Liaison: Partner, connect, collaborate, streamline (with campus organizations - Student Activities, SGA, Student Support Services, etc., Active Minds National, local governing entities, and more!)

Some of the basic rules/regulations that must be fulfilled to be an executive or representative for Active Minds at L&C include the fact that only active chapter members are eligible to serve in an officer position.

Any active chapter member who is a currently registered full time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing (i.e. not on academic probation or on probation for disciplinary reasons) will be eligible to apply.

Those who apply must plan to attend around 90% of the meetings for the organization, which could be held anywhere from weekly to once a month depending upon what the club decides on as a group.

There is also a 2.5 GPA average that is recommended by Student Government Association by anyone who is on an executive board or holding an officer position, although this is not a strictly enforced policy within Active Minds as it common knowledge that oftentimes grades slip when one struggles with mental health issues.

M

arch 1 begins the start of Women’s History Month, a time in the United States in which we commemorate the vital role women have played in shaping our nations’ history. What began in 1978, in Sonoma, California, as a week-long recognition of women’s contribution to culture, history and society has now morphed into the month-long celebration as we know it. Further, since the year 1995, our President has issued a series of proclamations delegating this time to reflect on the milestones that have been reached by women.

Today we look to both past and present, reflecting on women such as Sojourner Truth, who challenged the notions of racial and gender inequality, to Margret Sanger a lifelong advocate for reproductive rights, and ultimately leaders like Kamala Harris, who, as of Jan. 2021, is our nation’s first-ever female vice president.

The path to today’s success has been extremely difficult, and there have been many obstacles. For as recently as 50 years ago, a single woman couldn’t obtain a credit card or was not even allowed entrance into Ivy League institutions like Harvard or Brown; despite those many challenges that have been overcome, women still have a long journey ahead. The gender pay gap has not been closed, issues like domestic violence and sexual assault disproportionately affect females and women are severely underrepresented in the internal workings of our government.

The presence of the issues we still face further reinforces the importance of Women’s History Month.

In our past and present failures as a nation, we can still recognize how far we have come without losing sight of what still needs to be accomplished. Women’s History Month in 2021 is still relevant and will continue to be, as women and girls deserve to be celebrated and commended for their bravery and accomplishments.

Sia’s Film “Music” is a Minstrel Show for Autism

Rainbow Holocaust: The Horror of the Gay Concentration Camps of Chechnya

On Aug. 8, 2017, up-and-coming Chechen singer Zelim Bakaev was walking in the city of Grozny while in the area for his sister’s wedding.

According to credible eyewitness accounts, he was allegedly grabbed by security forces and pulled into a van and was never seen in the flesh again. Now, what could he have done to cause him to be pulled into a van by the Russian equivalent of Seal Team 6? Apparently, according to local activists, the crime was being gay.

Chechnya, a fairly autonomous area of Russia, near the border of Georgia, is run by Ramzan Kadyrov, who was appointed by Vladimir Putin in 2007. The gay purges started being talked about in 2017, when Novaya Gazeta, a local opposition paper, reported that over 100 men were detained and tortured, and that three were killed in Feb. 2017.

One of the major examples is Maxim Lapunov, an events planner who was arrested and beaten by police in March 2017. Maxim went public about his experience in October.

According to Maxim, The police would “burst in every 10 or 15 minutes shouting that I was gay and they would kill me [and] then they beat me with a stick for a long time: in the legs, ribs, buttocks and back. When I started to fall, they pulled me up and carried on.”

When the allegations were brought up to Kadyrov in July by David Scott for Real Sports, he claimed that the Page 11

reporters are, “devils. They are for sale. They are not people. God damn them for what they are accusing us of. They will have to answer to the almighty for this.”

He also said to Scott that, “We don’t have those kinds of people here. We don’t have any gays. If there are any, take them to Canada [and that] Take them far from us so we don’t have them at home. To purify our blood, if there are any here, take them.”

This is also backed up by Alvi Karimov, a spokesperson for Kadyrov, who said to Interfax, “If such people existed in Chechnya, law enforcement would not have to worry about them since their own relatives would have sent them to where they could never return.”

Chechnya also has a history of killing denouncers as well. Anna Politkovskaya, a reporter for Novaya Gazeta, was murdered in 2006 after being critical of Chechnyan officials and Putin. Alexander Litvinenko said, in his goodbye note, that, “You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life. May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me but to beloved Russia and its people.”

In 2020, a film titled Welcome to Chechnya was released, which documents the efforts of people who ran safehouses for LGBT Chechnyan people and Maxim, who for most of the film was deepfaked along with

others. The film also showed the effort they did following a person named “Anya” by the film makers.

“Anya” is/was the daughter of a high ranking Chechnyan official who was discovered to be a lesbian by her uncle. She fled, thanks to the organization, and was moved to a safehouse somewhere in Eurasia. When she took a walk, after being isolated for about six months, she went missing and was never found again.

Russia, Chechnya specifically, does have a history of “honor killing.”

Kadyrov said that, “If we have [gay] people here, I’m telling you officially their relatives won’t let them be because of our faith, our mentality, customs, traditions. Even if it’s punishable under the law, we would still condone it.” And that just says a lot.

On Feb. 9, the European Court of Human Rights declared that urgent matters must be taken in regards to the case of Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev, who were kidnapped at the beginning of the month in Moscow.

The Chechnyan officials, according to the Russian LGBT Network, charged them with “complicity with illegal armed groups”, and, initially, no family, lawyers or other officials were allowed.

What can you do to help this? While there has not been a purge since 2019, you can still look at and maybe donate to the Russian LGBT Network, which can be found at lgbtnet.org.

I think we can all agree that most Hollywood films do not depict mental illness well, most of the time. This is a problem that happens either with people who don’t do their research or they do do it, but mess up. This film is in both camps. Today, I’m going to be talking about the Golden Globe-nominated -- but critically smashed -- film “Music” by Sia. The first problem is how the main character is a non-verbal, Autistic child but is depicted by a neurotypical child. The role is played by Sia’s favorite, Maddie Ziegler, instead of an actor on the Autism spectrum.

Maddie did show concern for how she was depicting Music, but Sia pressed her on.

Sia has gone back and forth with her reasons on why she cast Maddie in the role with her saying that, “I actually tried working with a beautiful young girl, non-verbal, on the spectrum and she found it unpleasant and stressful. So that’s why I cast Maddie.” But, in January, she said that “[...] I can’t do a project without her. I don’t want to. I wouldn’t make art if it didn’t include her [Maddie Ziegler].”

Another major problem is how the character is really exaggerated compared to how someone with Autism acts. As someone who is on the spectrum and has a non-verbal sister, the film is like how someone makes fun of someone with autism.

This film is like a minstrel show where it is someone pretending to be a group and using exaggerated action/stereotypes for entertainment purposes.

Opinion

The film also uses the trope of the neurotypical person being used to make the main protagonist’s life better, which that trope is bad and overdone.

The film also….has blackface. In the opening sequence of the film, there is a scene with Music (yes, that is her name) wearing brown makeup and wearing a wig with dreads on it. Music is also a biracial character, yet Maddie is white. The film also uses the “magical Black man” trope, where a POC comes to the help of the white protagonists. With Broadway favorite, Leslie Odom Jr. playing Ebo Obom, the neighbor of Music and Zu (yes, that is the main character’s name).

Now, let’s go to the big pink elephant in the room. There is a scene where Music is having a meltdown, and Ebo decides to use prone restraint. Prone restraint is a controversial technique of putting your weight on the (usually smaller) child.

Ebo in the film said that it was “crushing her with my love”; that’s a big yikes on my end.

Prone restraint has resulted in injury and death. Max Benson was 13 when he was forced into restraint for 90 mins for “predictable behavior,” was forced to vomit and urinate on himself, passed out and later died at the now-defunct Guiding Hands School, according to the California Department of Education. In June of 2020, Eric Parsa was having a meltdown (which is involuntary and usually caused by sensory overload) at a laser tag place in Metairie, LA

when police, after Parsa hit the officer, restrained him for 9 minutes and 6 seconds, and refused to de-escalate, which caused him to pass away, according to a lawsuit against the police department by the parents.

Tauna Sysmanski, executive director of CommunicationFIRST, an organization that helps the civil rights of non-verbal Americans, said that, “MUSIC’s restraint scenes will undoubtedly cause harm to autistic people. Because many autistic people have experienced restraint, some will be traumatized by watching the film.

The movie also irresponsibly suggests that people experiencing meltdowns should be restrained, which could not be further from the truth [and that] we are saddened that the MUSIC team does not appear willing to take even the most basic precautions to mitigate the likely harm and deep trauma the movie may cause many non- speaking and autistic people.”

Another thing is that the very controversial organization, Autism Speaks, endorsed this film. The organization has been known for having promoted the idea that vaccines cause autism, promoted the inhumane Judge Rotenberg Center (which used shocks as a punishment, causing several deaths) and want a “cure” for autism, which is impossible on a fundamental (because it’s a disorder) and ideological standpoint.

Due to the influx of criticism, Sia decided that future prints will have the aforementioned scene removed, and that the movie will have a warning before the film. She has also deleted her twitter.

We’ve all heard the fairy tales of the monsters that live under the bridge or in the forest, looking for valuables from the poor souls that they stop or, even worse, their life.

But how did these stories come about? In this article we will explore the history behind these folklores and the characteristics of trolls and ogres.

We’ll begin with the legends of trolls. There are different origin stories about trolls depending on the region. In Scandinavian folklore, trolls were described as cave-dwellers that would live together in small families. They were considered to be very dangerous to human beings and people were told to avoid certain mountain ranges and burial grounds.

As legend had it, trolls were at times described as man eaters and would turn to stone if caught in the sunlight. Scandinavian trolls Page 13

were described as being very old and extremely strong. These Scandinavian trolls were considered much smaller than trolls that were thought to be found in the Norwegian areas.

Just as Scandinavian folklore described trolls as dangerous and to be avoided, the same was true for trolls found in the Norwegian areas. These trolls were described as large and with human-like qualities, but also dim-witted. While Norwegian trolls could also be found in the mountains, they were more likely to inhabit caves versus the burial mounds where Scandinavian trolls could be found.

Similar to the folklore of trolls, ogres were not far behind when it came to being described as large and dim-witted. Ogres were thought to frequent woodland settings such as forests and high mountain peaks.

Despite the personality similarities between trolls and ogres, the physical characteristics of ogres differ vastly from trolls. Unlike trolls, ogres were described as large, human-like monsters. They were said to have a strong physique and a different skin tone that was often thought to be a greenish gray color.

While trolls and ogres were both considered to be dangerous, ogres were considered to be more dangerous because of their insatiable taste for human beings, especially smaller children. According to legends they would roam the UK and harass the first human settlers. Just like the trolls, they were often said to hide under bridges to await the arrival of their victims.

Despite the many stories of trolls and ogres, they are just legends.

Although, there are new discoveries each day about things we never thought could be possible. While trolls and ogres are just legends, it’s good advice to always be aware of your surroundings when hiking through the forest or near caves because you never know what could be lurking right around the corner or under that bridge up ahead.

Retro Review “Galaga”

Hello, welcome back to retro view. Today I’m going to be reviewing Galaga.

Galaga is an arcade shooter made in 1981 and published by Namco. I know this is an old game; however, this holds a very dear place in my heart. When I was growing up as a kid, we had a plug and play station that had Galaga, Pacman, dig dug and many others.

With no story to grade it on, I must go by game mechanics, which are flawless.

This game was a blast to get to go back and replay. It was so thrilling to watch my score grow and grow each time I played. It’s a simple game to learn to play, but an extremely difficult one to master. I can see myself going back to this game when I’m bored or just want to pass some time. Overall, I give this game a 10 out of 10.

The gist of the game is the player controls a spaceship, and you must defeat the opposing enemies by shooting projectiles. The player only has three lives to see how far one can go, and the objective is to see who can get the highest score. Galaga has a basic premise however, the execution is flawless. Retro Review “Pokémon Snap”

The Game Table: BioShock

By Lakyn Gardner lagardner@lc.edu “Pokémon Snap” is a first-person rail shooter game developed by HAL Laboratory and released for the Nintendo 64 in March of 1999. Pokémon Snap follows a young man by the name of Todd Snap on his journey to take pictures of Pokémon.

While taking “Pokémon snaps”, be sure to keep an eye out for fan favorites, like Pikachu. Remember, the better the pose, the better score your photo will get. Capture by Alex Johnson via Project64.

As you can probably tell from the title of the game, the goal is to take photos of Pokémon. Pokémon Snap consists of seven courses starting with the beach preceded by the tunnel, volcano, River, Cave, Valley and then a special course known as the “Rainbow Cloud”.

One could easily beat this game in a three-hour setting if they’re determined. However, if someone doesn’t take the time to enjoy the world that was created, they have missed the point of the game.

The game is meant to take you on a slow-paced scenic adventure, which it does perfectly.

The controls are a little wonky. It’s very hard to control a first-person camera with only one analog stick and the unique build of Some Pokémon, like Meowth, will follow you around the 64 controller the map, giving you many chances for the perfect makes for an un- shot. This game was an amazing nostalgia trip and I had a wonderful time, 100% completing the game for this playthrough. I give this game a 7 out of 10, the controls were a hindrance to the score of this game.

BioShock is a retro-futuristic first-person shooter developed by 2K Games, a company based in California. 2K is best known for series such as Borderlands, Civilization, Mafia, X-COM and their two sports games, NBA 2K and WWE 2K. BioShock was released originally on Aug. 21, 2007 for the Xbox 360 and Steam. A year later, in October, it would be ported to the PlayStation 3. Then, it would get an OS X/Mac port in 2009 that same month. BioShock, along with its two sequels, BioShock 2 and BioShock: Infinite, would go on to be a part of a collection, released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam in Sept. of 2016, May 2020 for the Nintendo Switch. The collection included a remastered version of the first game. BioShock received critical acclaim from critics and fans alike, particularly for its story, setting and environment; being called one of the greatest games of all time.

The gameplay for BioShock is amazing.

Not only are you going around shooting enemies with a pistol, a tommy gun, a shotgun and even a grenade launcher, but you can also beat them with a wrench. Another thing I love about the gameplay is that you inject “plasmids” into you that can give you special abilities, like “Electro Bolt”, “Incinerate”, “Enrage” and “Telekinesis”. Not only are you fighting regular humans, but advanced humans that are called “Big Daddies”. They protect these “Little Sisters”, who refer to the enhanced human beings as “Mr Bubbles”, from being harvested for ADAM, which has the ability to rewrite genetic materials. ADAM can be used to develop and upgrade Jack’s plasmid abilities.

The story of BioShock takes on a more morality type of storytelling mixed with RPG and survival horror elements. The way the story plays out and how certain scenes are shown reminds me of HalfLife 2 because of its very limited usage of cinematic cutscenes. Instead, most of what happens is occurring in the gameplay itself, which fits very well for what the game is going for.

Although, one thing that can bug me a bit is dealing with the Big Daddies. They are usually a pain to fight against, especially if I run out of ammo. When Jack ends up dying, he would spawn in these Vita chambers that are spread throughout the game. This function helps so I don’t have to redo anything.

Players move to new locations by achieving a certain number of points. Points are awarded to you depending on size, pose and technique. I feel as if the game is really rewarding when you set up a shot.

The game runs at a steady pace, but I feel it’s lacking content. This game only contains 62 out of 151 Pokémon. This game was originally supposed to be released on the Nintendo 64 DD, which was an extension for the Nintendo 64 to add a disk drive. I believe if the game were to be released for the 64 DD and they could have added all 150 Pokémon and more levels, this game would have been far more intriguing and had much more replay value. However, this game has plenty of Easter eggs and secrets to Watch your angles! The gameplay

In 1960, the protagonist, named Jack, explores an underwater biopunk city named Rapture located in the Atlantic Ocean after being the lone survivor of a plane crash. On a radio, he is contacted by a man named Atlas, who is his guide in a way. He requests for Jack’s help in tracking down a businessman named Andrew Ryan and rescuing his family.

Entertainment

Another function that I love is that the player can “hack” into security cameras, robots, turrets and machines to purchase medkits, plasmid shots and ammo so the price is lowered. You have to connect these pipes together to get them from point A to B for it to work.

The best part about the story are the tape recordings that you find throughout the game that tell a lot about the city itself and why it came to be. I played BioShock remastered, and the game, for what it is, looks stunning as heck. Its biopunk style and underwater setting is like mixing chocolate and peanut butter. It’s just so darn good.

The conclusion I’m going to give BioShock a 9.5/10.

While the gameplay is slightly annoying in terms of the Big Daddies, everything else about the game is worth your while— the morality-based storytelling, blending FPS with roleplay and survival horror, the secrets to be revealed and the setting, they are all worth checking out! If you want to try it out yourself, then buy the collection on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, or Steam.

Cartoon Callback: Gargoyles

By Megan Lanham mrlanham@lc.edu Gargoyles, or Gargoyles:The Goliath Chronicles, is an animated television series which aired on Walt Disney from Oct. 24, 1994 to Feb. 15, 1997. It often ran re-runs well into the 2000s and is widely considered a show that was ahead of its time. This was a show I often found myself engrossed in whenever it aired during the Disney Afternoon programming block. As soon as I heard the theme song with the dark gregorian-esque choir and the sweeping orchestral, my eyes were glued to the screen.

Though I only had vague memories of what this show was about until I recently rewatched it.

Cartoon Callback: Dave The Barbarian

Have you ever had that cartoon you remember watching as a kid, but could never recall it as an adult aside from some vague memories of it? Lately I’ve been having just that sensation, so I am dedicating myself to tracking down these old shows and revisiting them.

Back in the early 2000s, I remember spending mornings watching the Disney Channel before school. The cartoon block usually consisted of classic morning cartoons which consisted of shows like Lilo & Stitch: The Series & Proud Family. Amongst them was a cartoon known as Dave The Barbarian, which was significantly shorter a series than I thought it was as a kid due to the constant reruns and my short attention span.

The series premiered Jan. 23 in 2004 and ended Jan. 22, 2005. It spanned only 21 episodes at 22 minutes each (42 segments in total) with only a single season, making this whole series a short and sweet watch. The show centers on a Page 19

barbarian named Dave, and his friends and family who go on absurdist medieval-themed adventures.

Taking place in the kingdom of Urdogoth during the Middle Ages, Dave, his siblings and Uncle are tasked with running the kingdom. While their parents Throktar and Glimia are away “fighting evil”, they must defend the kingdom from various episodic threats, each being their own individual surrealist adventure.

One of my favorites of these adventures has got to be “The Maddening Sprite of the Stump”, where Dave’s magic talking sword, Lula, gets stuck in a tree stump during one of his attempts to protect the magic forest against a man-eating giant muffin. No one in the royal family can remove Lula from the stump. A tree sprite of the stump eventually pops out and claims that, according to the rules of the kingdom, only the true ruler of Urdogoth can remove Lula from the stump.

This results in a re-enactment of the old

King Arthur tale, with the whole kingdom attempting to remove the sword, which according to the tiny, winged tree sprite, makes him the de facto ruler of the kingdom.

Even the first episode represents the absurd and surreal quality that this cartoon has. It really goes off the walls with its creativity and is really fun to watch because you will never know where it goes from episode to episode. Though it is short, you can tell the whole cast and production team had a lot of fun creating it. It makes me wish that the show was actually brought to Disney+ so it could properly support and gain more of an audience.

If you are looking for a cartoon that does not really take itself seriously, with ridiculous humor and some fantasy elements, this is the cartoon for you. All episodes are available for free on Youtube to watch. I definitely recommend that you give it a try.

This show is heavily inspired by the goth culture and has relatively dark themes, a major departure for Disney as a whole.

The emphasis for this show was the writing, featuring complex story arcs and melodrama. Character arcs, as wel,l are

heavily prevalent throughout the series along with Shakespearean themes.

Due to its complex themes and darker storyline, I see this cartoon often compared to Batman:The Animated Series in terms of overall content. If you are a fan of dark fantasy and are looking for a cartoon with a more complex story than some of its contemporaries, I’d definitely recommend this one. All 3 of its seasons are on Disney+ for your viewing convenience.

The series features a species of nocturnal creatures known as gargoyles that turn to stone during the day, focusing on a clan of them led by the main character, Goliath. In the year 994, the clan lived in Scotland. While petrified, most of the gargoyles are betrayed and killed by humans and the remainder are frozen in stone form. A thousand years later, in 1994, billionaire David Xanatos purchased the gargoyles castle and reconstructed it atop his New York skyscraper, the Eyrie building. Workout Review The Schwarzenegger Workout By: Lakyn Gardner lagardner@lc.edu Welcome to workout review, I’m usually doing game reviews so you probably wouldn’t expect this to come from me. I’ve been in fitness for about three years now. I’ve done dieting and bulking. I fell on and off the track many times, and the person I always looked up to the most was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schwarzenegger is my lifting idol and was my inspiration to start lifting and training seriously.

Although I’m nowhere near Arnold, it’s good to have a goal.

I decided to review his chest workout, which I will put at the bottom of this article. His workouts were for isolation work. Being a bodybuilder, you must work specific muscle groups each day of the week. His workout consists of five sets, with six to 10 reps across six major movements.

It’s been a day since I’ve done the workout and I must say, it was amazing. Working muscles in isolated groups is something I’m no stranger to; however, when you’re doing a workout that is by someone you look up to you want to push as hard as you possibly can, I didn’t want to let Arnold down doing his workout.

The pump from this workout was nice, I could feel my chest twitching after every set. Some of the movements were new to me so I’m feeling soreness in some different places. I did, however, have to add some cardio because I’m cutting, so can’t be skipping out on that. All

in all, this workout was fulfilling and gave me a new sense of ethics to working out. When I was doing the workout, I could only think about Arnold; I could just see his physique every time I closed my eyes so always pushed harder and harder.

If you’re wanting to try this workout, I recommend you make sure you have some time ‘cause this is not a quick one. It took me about an hour and a half to complete, giving it my best. All in all, I give this work out an 8 out of 10.

Blazer Beat: A Temporary Hold For Men’s Hoops, Trailblazer Women Notch First Win

By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu As was inevitable in this unusual season, schedules have been altered, practices and games have been postponed and the Trailblazers have had to adjust. In the same week where the women’s basketball team secured the first Trailblazer win in any sport in a calendar year, the men’s team announced a temporary “cancelling” of all team activities and games “for the immediate future”.

A largely freshman group is finding out just how tough this level of basketball can be. While the season certainly isn’t over just yet for our Trailblazers, one can be optimistic about a group with more experience coming back next season, in potentially more “normal” circumstances, battle-hardened by a tough freshman season on and off the court.

Already over halfway into the season, coach Jaron Young and the Trailblazers are looking to build on this bit of momentum and string together some results for the home stretch. L&C’s women currently sit at 1-8, but are playing consistently better basketball as the season continues.

“Finally Nate, finally,” L&C Women’s basketball coach Jaron Young said to me on his way back to the locker room following their Feb. 25 contest against Spoon River. The elation came from the Trailblazer women securing the first win for any Trailblazer sport since their return to action from the COVID-19 layoff.

In an email statement released Feb. 25, L&C men’s basketball Coach and Athletic director Doug Stotler said, “The Lewis & Clark CC men’s basketball team members and coaches have been placed into precautionary but mandatory COVID QUARANTINE as of 4:00pm, 2/25/2021. One of our players has illness symptoms that are consistent with positive COVID cases. We plan to get this player tested this weekend but until we know for certain his health status we want to be extremely cautious.”

As a reporter of sports for this publication, and an impromptu cameraman for this spring’s Trailblazer sports, I’m one of the lucky few who’s actually in attendance for games at Riverbend Arena at the moment. I could feel the relief in the air as the time expired, it was a win the team needed.

Luckily for the Trailblazers, that quarantine was cleared, and they played but unfortunately lost to Kaskaskia on Mar. 3, less than a week after the notice of a quarantine. With the player in question testing negative, the team-wide quarantine was lifted, and team activities have resumed in full.

It was a win I, as someone who’s been watching Trailblazer sports at the end of a quite expensive camera, needed.

I try to stay impartial here, for journalism’s sake I suppose, but wins are more fun to be at and definitely more fun to write about.

The days of quarantine include days of practice gone and a clash against a top team in NJCAA basketball in John A. Logan cancelled. More importantly, it’s less time on the court working on the Trailblazers issues that have plagued them in what’s been a difficult season thus far.

Yet to win a game yet this season, the 0-7 Trailblazers have struggled to play the game coaches Doug Stotler and Kavon Lacey want out of their guys. The Trailblazers are a smaller team and often outmatched for size, but they can neutralize that difference by creating havoc on defense and getting transition baskets.

As far as the game itself, and really moreover L&C women’s hoops for the past two seasons, the conversation begins and ends with Mary Penland-Holmes, responsible for more than a third of the 65 Trailblazer points on the evening. Penland-Holmes shot 8-14

Easier said than done, of course. L&C plays in one of the toughest regions in NJCAA Division I basketball, with multiple Top 25 ranked teams in John A. Logan, Olney Central and Vincennes University. Those not ranked aren’t necessarily chopped liver, either.

Penland-Holmes is one of the most dynamic shooters in NJCAA Division II, ranked in the top 50 in field goal percentage, three point percentage and three pointers made, in far less games than many others at the same level.

•••• Bron Wilkerson’s volleyball team is still searching for their first win, following a very tight contest with Lincoln Trail nearly two weeks ago where they came within striking distance of their first victory.

The Trailblazers traded sets with Lincoln Trail, with sharp play around the net throughout the match, but fell just short in the final set, 15-11. Since that 3-2 loss that came down to four points in the final set, the volleyball Trailblazers have been swept 3-0 twice, in games that were unfortunately never that close.

In a short spring season, L&C only takes to the court five more times. Standing at 0-8, Bron Wilkerson, Skylar Kuntzman and company will have opportunities coming up to capture that elusive first victory.
