D epartment of Health (DOH) have reported 618 new COVID-19 cases of the Omicron Variant in which majority of the new cases are of the BA.2 sublineage dubbed “Stealth Omicron,” January 27.

A joint statement of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC), National Institute of Health (NIH) and DOH stated that of the 618 new Omicron cases composes of 497 local cases and 121 returning overseas Filipinos (ROF) From the 497 local cases, 238 were from NCR, 71 were from CALABARZON, 30 were from Ilocos Region and Western Visayas, 28 were from Eastern Visayas, 27 were from Central Luzon. 20 were from Central Visayas, 19 were from Cagayan Valley, 13 were from CAR, 10 were from Davao Region, 6 were from SOCCSKARGEN, 2 were from Bicol Region and MIMAROPA, and 1 was from Northern Mindanao.

“Based on the case line list, 13 cases are still active, two cases have died, 560 cases have been tagged as recovered, while there are 43 cases whose outcomes are still being verified,” DOH added.

In addition, the tally did not specifically indicate how many of the cases are of the BA.1 and BA.2 Omicron subvariants.

Moreover, the Omicron variant is more transmissible than other COVID-19 variants and have high “environmental sustainability” as it lasts longer on surfaces such as plastic and skin than other COVID-19 variants according to a study conducted by Japanese scientists.

Meanwhile, the country had broke the record for new COVID-19 cases multiple times during the month of January, with the highest being 39,004 new cases tallied last January 15.

As of January 28, there are currently 231,658 active COVID-19 cases, in which 18,638 are new cases, tallying the total COVID-19 cases to 3,511,491. [R]

ASJ goes for two-week Academic Break; Students, teachers recharge for SY resumption LANCE CRISOSTOMO

A

SJ announced a two-week academic break, suspending synchronous sessions and asynchronous activities, from January 17-28.

Mr. Richard Pineda, school principal, announced the academic break via a bulletin from the Office of the Principal after a long consultation with the school council, faculty, and staff last January 15.

In the bulletin, the suspension of all activities, whether synchronous and asynchronous, and the giving of consideration to student submissions were emphasized and ensured to the whole ASJ community.

The announcement of academic break followed the regional memorandum released by the Department of Education (DepEd) CALABARZON last January 13 which gave an academic break to public schools and which also gave private school institutions the freedom with regard to the decision of holding an academic break for their respective schools.

With the academic break, the third quarter exams week was moved from the original Jan. 17-21 to Jan. 31, February 2-5, Achievement Society Holiday (ASH) was moved from Jan. 24-25 to Feb. 7-8, and the eSports tournament was moved from Jan. 24 to 28 to Feb. 7 to 11.

Academic Break gathers Positive Reaction Students and teachers alike were surprised and joyous when the school administration announced the academic break.

Mr. Cris Dulutan, Math and Science Coordinator, said that the feeling of being drained is normal due to the school activities that is conducted all year round and the academic break has given both the teachers and students time to destress and recharge to finish the school year.

“Honestly, it is very common to feel drained of energy when we focus on our activities, and taking breaks can relieve and reduce levels of stress.

And because of the academic break, I feel physically, emotionally, and mentally recharged. When the principal informed us about the academic break, I think that it will be a great help both for teachers and students,” Dulutan shared.

Additionally, Mr. Lawrence Fernando, Social Studies faculty, stated that this announcement has been welcomed since the increasing number of COVID and flu cases are rising and given the fact that the past two academic years were conducted on a fast pace.

For the teachers, Mr. Cris Dulutan shared that he spent “quality and quantity time” with his family and also with his lesson making for his classes while Mr. Lawrence Fernando said that he also spent time with his family but was also busy with the AdvoCampaign team of the school in the Ped Xing contest.

For the students, Zitti Macias, Grade 7 student, shared that she spent her break on resting, doing some of her hobbies like drawing, and doing some school works in preparation for the resumption of classes.

On the other hand, John Czar Salaguinto, Grade 12 STEM student shared that primarily, he did three things to fully take advantage of the academic break: meditation, biking, and doing his personal hobbies like drawing. [R]

Beforehand, the Lasallian Rheims conducted a survey by the end of the 2nd Quarter which revealed that the HUMMS strand ranks third among the strands that the students wanted to pursue.

LASO unveils 2IKLAB

asallian Assembly of Student Officers (LASO) have launched 2IKLAB, the second esports tournament of ASJ. 2IKLAB will feature three game titles in mobile and in the PC platform namely, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), Call of Duty Mobile (CODM), and Valorant.

The event will accommodate up to twelve (12) teams for MLBB and CODM, and eight (8) for Valorant and will take place for six days from February 7 to 12.

In a text interview with LASO Vice President Hannah Guerra, she stated that 2IKLAB was launched for the sake of students’ enjoyment after the examination week and allow the students to show off their skills and talents on a certain game.

In addition, one of the main difference of 2IKLAB from last year’s esports tournament is the event’s accessibility as the games will be broadcasted.

“Not only students and teachers can join and watch the event, but also other people such as the alumni and people who are not affiliated by the school. We take into consideration the Data Privacy Act for the sake of the students' safety and ensure that all confidential information are safeguarded by LASO,” Guerra furthered.

In a Facebook post, LASO has announced that each game mentioned has cash prizes, Php. 2,500.00 for the champion, Php. 1,500.00 for the second placer, and Php. 1,000.00 for the third placer.

Only bonafide high school students of ASJ can join the games; a team may include members from different grade levels.

Philippine GDP grows by 5.6%, beating target percent ANDREW DELA PLANA

The Philippine economy grew by 5.6% in 2021, after an outstanding fourth quarter performance, which slightly surpassed the country’s target percent which is a 5 to 5.5 goal for 2021.

National Statistician and Civil Registrar Dennis Mapa wrote, ”The Philippine Gross Domestic Product (GDP) posted a growth of 7.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021, resulting in 5.6 percent full-year growth in 2021,” in a report by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Prov’l. Ord. 343 secures Caviteño Nonagenarians LANCE CRISOSTOMO

angguniang Panlalawigan of Cavite approved Provincial Ordinance (Prov’l. Ord.) No. 343-2022 or the Nonagenarians Cash Gift Ordinance, granting nonagenarian citizens of Cavite to receive cash gifts and funds, January 17.

According to the document posted by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in their official Facebook page, the ordinance is enacted since the provincial government recognized the senior citizens as a “special sector” who has contributed much to Cavite’s development and as valuable citizens who needs support and attention to promote their well – being.

Additionally, the Prov’l. Ord. specified the qualifications in order to receive the benefits of the ordinance as the following: A) Nonagenarian residents must be registered in the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) to be properly identified; B) A certificate of residency provided by the Barangay Captain must be presented by the beneficiary; C) Certification from OSCA certified by the City/Municipal Social Welfare Development Office proving that he/she is a member of OSCA for atleast five (5) years; and, D) Must be 90-99 years old upon the enactment of the Ordinance.

The Ordinance assured that once the requirements are met, the qualified Caviteño Nonagenarians would receive the certificate of recognition and P5,000 cash gift during the Annual Elderly Filipino week every October. [R]

The government has then reimposed curbs and restrictions in different provinces, as the number of COVID cases went up, due to the Omicron variant.

Since the first Omicron case in the country, the National Capital Region has now been placed in Alert Level 3, and will remain so until the end of January. [R]

Guanzon discloses vote to DQ Marcos, believes ‘political interference’ delays division resolution ANDREW DELA PLANA

Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner

Rowena Guanzon revealed on Thursday, January 27, that she voted for the petitions that sought to disqualify Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s from the presidential elections.

The Comelec First Division is currently handling three disqualification cases filed by different activist groups, such as: Akbayan, the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses and Martial Law, and a group which claims to be the original PFP. Guanzon is also the head of the First Division, in which she clarifies that her opinion was hers only and does not represent the First Division.

“That's why it's all happening because my vote is DQ (disqualify) Marcos Jr. I think, there is moral turpitude really based on evidence on the law. There

is, I will not keep it a secret, that is the reason why all of these things are happening,” she said in an interview with GMA-7.

She also reveals that she believes that there is political interference that was delaying the decision on the case in a telephone interview with Inquirer.

“I believe there is political interference here… it was delayed because they already know my vote.

They think if I retire, my vote will not count, which is not true,” she said in the telephone interview.

“Ang kutob ko talaga may nakikialam na eh. Some people are trying to influence the commissioners. Yan ang ayaw ko,” Guanzon continued in a GMA report.

Guanzon explained that while she is set to retire on February 2, her vote for disqualification would still be counted if ever the division’s resolution comes out later. [R]

The patient is doing well three days after the 7-hour surgery.

"It was either die or this transplant," Mr Bennett plained a day before the surgery.

Bennett had been deemed ineligible for a human transplant, a decision that is often made by doctors when the patient is in extremely poor health.

Dr. Bartley Griffith, surgeon in the University of Maryland Medicine, claimed that the surgery would bring the world "one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis".

Xenotransplantation is any procedure that involves transplantation or infusion into a human body. The possibility of using animal organs for xenotransplantation has long been considered, and the use of pig heart valves is already common.

ccording to scientists in Hawaii and France, Earth’s “sixth mass extinction” has already started.

An evaluation of evidence of the ongoing extinction was published by biologists from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris.

The team led by Robert Cowie, research professor at the University of Hawaii’s Pacific Biosciences Research Center, argued that the Sixth Mass Extinction has begun on land and in freshwater.

Cowie and his fellow researchers aimed to disprove the deniers by focusing on the decline of invertebrates, which receive significantly less attention compared to vertebrates in

They also noted that we won't be able to save all the species currently going extinct, but with care and awareness, we might manage to preserve most, and save them for future generations.

As to whether this extinction can be stopped, the researchers don't have an answer. But

Two To Tango ALAPAAP // Andrew Dela Plana Almost two years into the pandemic, and things aren’t looking too bright for the Filipinos in early 2022. With another variant on the loose and the ongoing dilemma of many Filipinos regarding public health, the only thing we could do after enjoying the slight ease of restrictions in late 2021 is to retreat back to our homes and wonder when the pandemic will end. We have two different incidents for the month of January that highlights the certain reactions and behavior of Filipinos to the pandemic. Furthermore, with these kinds of instances during the pandemic, we are left wondering who really is to be held accountable for this never-ending situation– is it really the people, or the government?

In December 2021, Gwyneth Chua skipped hotel quarantine to party with her friends in Makati, all the while positive for COVID-19, with her actions seemingly the ones which started yet another surge of COVID cases in the country. Dubbed “Poblacion Girl” by many netizens, Chua attended a party in Poblacion, Makati, even going as far as to share on her social media accounts her escapade, showing that she has indeed skipped quarantine.

Several cases were then filed against Gwyneth Chua and her parents, with justice seemingly served this time around. Chua’s issue not only showcased her disobedience to simple COVID regulations, but her blatant misuse of privilege and ignorance as well. A lot were outraged and expressed their anger against poblacion girl. The reaction of the people

to the issue were not unreasonable per se, since the general public finally saw hope as the COVID cases came down by the end of the year.

The urge of Filipinos to enjoy the holidays outside of their homes are not without reason. Being stuck inside their houses for almost two years really isn’t a fun idea. The drama was exaggerated in some cases, but we can’t really say that what people felt then were unwarranted. The people were sick of having people from the privileged class ruining the once again hopeful future, and so they were united. The perfect scapegoat presented themself, and the people didn’t seem to notice it.

Another case came later in January, wherein an unvaccinated street vendor named Gemma Parina was shown in a video, ranting about the “no vaccine, no ride” policy, gaining widespread attention on different social media platforms. She was made fun of, and ridiculed for saying the words, "Hindi totoo ang COVID" during her rant. However, the words were not the substance of the rant itself–she was actually ranting about how people like her keep struggling in the pandemic while government officials have the audacity to steal money from the people. Yes, she belongs in the group of people who believe that COVID-19 is fake and the whole pandemic is a ruse so that the rich get richer and the government get more power, but this kind of thinking, when you look at it from their perspective, is actually justified.

This leaves us with several questions, but there is one question we should pay attention to–why so?

Well, how would the Filipinos actually trust those at the very seat of power who promised a beneficial change for all–and gave us a bloody anti-poor campaign instead? How would those in lower classes trust the government when the promises about solving numerous issues during the campaign period were announced to be only for the sake of campaigning?

How will we fare in the pandemic when our problem is a virus, yet our early solution to the pandemic is militarization, not medicalization?

When the pandemic started, health workers suggested mass testing, as well as travel bans, but we soon saw that the government had no plan in doing it early on. If only people trusted more in the government, right?

With this, one could prove that this kind of thinking, the distrust towards the government, is more justified than ever. We do know for a fact that it is their duty to reinstill the trust that they lost with the people and it is also their duty to make sure that every action they take will be transparent to the people—to reassure the people that they are taking the necessary actions for the different issues.

They might say that it takes two to tango, but it is clear that the people aren’t the ones leading the dance. The people are struggling to keep up with this never-ending dance, and as long as the ones leading don’t take accountability, if ever the ones leading fall in their dance, we fall harder. The only options we have left are to break free from this violent dance, or to make sure that we as followers, follow properly, and for the leaders to do their job properly. [R]

“K ung ikaw ang papalarin na maging pangulo…” – the pinnacle of the “battle” for presidential position has begun as the presidential candidates have been appearing on interviews every day. Several media companies, radio programs, and famous personalities such as GMA, ABS-CBN, DZRH, and Tony Gonzaga have been setting up interviews with the aspirants as early as last year. However, there are two perceivable problems with the current process of presidential interviews. First, the top FIVE candidates are the ones heavily spotlighted; and, second, the ‘bias’ branding has risen for reasonable and unreasonable reasons. With all these chaos and issues existing, the question remains – Can the 2022 Philippine elections be really fair?

At the core of it, the presidential interviews are meant to provide an in-depth scrutiny of the plans, vision, and capabilities of ALL candidates. Each of the 10 candidates must be given the equal opportunity to answer the questions that will either make or break them.

Now that we are in the pandemic, these interviews are the only means of people to interact and critique these candidates. Looking into the interviews that have been conducted until now, the interviewers have really pushed the candidates to their limits. Jessica Soho and her team tested the interviewed candidates through asking researched-based questions on all facets of the problems/issues in the Philippines. Boy

Abunda hit the candidates with existing societal issues. Radio programs such as DZRH inquired on personal and societal issues that the candidates are and will be facing.

However, only five out of the 10 candidates are given much spotlight. This is a big problem that even COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez pointed out. It will always be Robredo, Marcos, Pacquiao, Moreno, and Lacson on every TV, Radio, and media interview.

Rarely would you here Abella, de Guzman, Gonzales, Mangondato, and Montemayor.

The bottom five candidates act on their own, through Facebook Lives and once-in-a-while interview invites, for their voices to be heard.

The grueling result is reflected on Presidential surveys conducted left and right by different teams. Issues and Advocacies Center released the January 2022 poll survey results – Marcos Jr. 51%, Moreno 14%, Robredo 11%, Pacquiao 10%, Lacson 8%, de Guzman 1%, Gonzales and Abella 0.25%, and Mangondato, and Montemayor 0%. Pulse Asia (last December with 2,400 respondents) also released their tally – Marcos Jr. 53%, Robredo 20%, Moreno and Pacquiao 8%, and Lacson 6%.

Now, the situation posits a question to all the interviewing bodies - do they really interview to help the Filipino people choose the right candidate or do they interview, specifically the top candidates, for ratings and views?

On the other hand, the issue of ‘biased’ interviews rose as Marcos Jr. denied the

Just look at the comment sections of every presidential interview, of every post on all media platforms – all they have commented are BBM for pres, BBMSARA, Ang Galing ni BBM. They even prefer vloggers, bloggers, and trolls rather than reliable news agencies. If Jessica Soho is already biased, what more do they call the apologists, trolls, and diehard fans?

Not for now – the Philippine elections cannot be fair. Without giving all candidates an equal opportunity and without the Filipinos giving up on their preconceived notion and natural bias, this election will just remain the same. However, with more than 33 million registered youth with social awareness voting this May, there is still the light of hope for the Philippines. The youth has stood up to fix the nation through educated political picks that could lead the nation out of this misery. The youth fully understands that the next administration may either make or break the nation. With the next elections dictating the future ahead of the Philippines, it is up to the more than 33 million registered youth voters to overdo the blinded voters. [R]

Eternity, Stability or Obsolescence?

Have

you ever considered switching or upgrading a new phone or tablet even just a year or two has just passed and your current model is still performing nearly good as how you bought it?

Unbeknownst to many, this question is rampantly asked in developed and first-world countries and even in the Philippines. If so, let me ask you some follow-up questions.

What happens to your old model?

Do you still use it? Do you give it to others or sell it at a lower price or completely trash it?

Planned obsolescence, one of the critical problems the business environment is battling, is the act of rendering a product obsolete or unusable in a planned way. Imagine a light-bulb company who has discovered technology to produce the most efficient lighting which can last for at least 30 years. Once selling the lightbulbs, since the lighting system is pretty much eternal, no one will purchase light bulbs and demand will be critically low. The rest follows; low sales, income, and eventually, bankruptcy.

To combat the somewhat slippery slope fallacy, businesses impose “expiration dates” and enforce methods such as contrived durability and preventing repairs for their products to make them obsolete. Some even do programmed obsolescence such as software lock-outs when a product reaches a certain date.

Planned obsolescence is also a

problem for nature as more consumption equates to more produced waste, particularly, electronic waste.

How can we combat this as consumers and producers?

Adding on, this is seen as an additional business ethics problem.

Do companies need to be desperate to deliberately put “expiration” periods over their products to ensure future sales? Moral principles apply as companies decide what is the “best” for them: to ensure company stability, or care for the environment or the consumer. The answer here is pretty obvious, but that is the sad reality of businesses.

To combat this continuing phenomenon, consumers, manufacturers and other sectors should step-up. Individuals consuming products prone to obsolescence should thoroughly research and constantly seek out goods that are repairable, sourced sustainably, and are ethically produced. It is also important to avoid hoarding and allocate some of our time, routine, and budget to repair and maintain goods. If goods have reached its end life, you can sell the product or pass it on to people who can use or benefit from it (e.g., recycling plants, junkshops, electricians).

For the side of the manufacturers, they should aim and promote sustainability by producing goods and offering services that deviate from people’s normal habits. They

can also generate other ways of generating profit by providing services and other offers such as repairs, resale, upgrade, or rentals. To further develop a business’ brand, the company should reinforce its customer relationships based on quality and service, not by aesthetics only.

Law-making bodies can also make changes to combat planned obsolescence in a multitude of ways such as: 1) advocating environmental sustainability (such as building more recycling plants and imposing a pay-as-you-throw system for certain types of wastes), 2) strengthening consumers’ rights and, 3) imposing extended producer-responsibility laws for companies to consider the full life cycle of a product or service.

Planned obsolescence is a phenomenon not really known to all, but produces a great impact on how our normal lives work. This business model has pros and cons; however, it seems like there is a greater impact on our natural environment than the business environment. As we are gradually progressing in the contemporary, technologically-advancing, fast-paced world, new problems that we don’t acknowledge instantly come in our way. Being a human that constitutes the biosphere by using its resources, we should also bear the responsibility to care for our natural environment for the future generation to enjoy nature to the fullest just like we do today. readers might have taken noticed that we were not around for last month’s issue. Apologies are in order. I had actually planned this piece to be a two-part series. However, as I tried to begin writing, I stumbled. Reached a roadblock and a lot of other circumstances.

Hindsight. As we began the year 2021, almost all were optimistic that it would be better than that of last year and we are most certainly wrong. I remember someone stated that we might have dodged 2020 but 2021 just hit way too close to home. COVID-19 cases rose exponentially. Variants and surges everywhere. New lockdowns and restrictions.

There were signs of hope but all will just be feigned as the beginning of 2022 has proven.

It may be too quick to judge but this new year, 2022, only proves that new is not always better. As of writing, the pandemic still continues to ravaged the country and has shown that almost two years in, we are still not at a better shape or footing. The call to action was still the same from the beginning: free mass testing, increase budget on health, and prop-

er contact tracing and isolation. 2022 might be just as what the internet memes say: 2020 too. It’s just that this time, there is now a window where we can have a chance to change the course our nation would be taking.

Foresight. 2022 is an election year.

Not just any election but a presidential one. In May, we would ought to decide how the country in the next six years or even beyond would be shaped by the next set of leaders we would be electing. Much can be said about this, which would be done on another time. But it is certain that history is vital in this election, acting as a basis and as a judge.

2022 has just began but the last few weeks seems to be just an exhausting continuation of 2021 which was a continued drain of what was 2020. The pandemic has surely taken a toll on all of us. The end would surely be there but it is absolutely still in a distance. And even if we might reach it, we would surely not return to the same pre-pandemic world we had. Pessimistic?

Maybe but most likely just realistic.

And reality would always be such of what we make of it. [R]

Alert Level 4 No more IZUMIN // Kyzzia Paguirigan

A debate

is stirring around in the National Capital Region (NCR) and other cities that are majorly affected by the sudden increase in COVID cases that the alert level should be raised to level 4. Health experts have reached out to the IATF suggesting to raise the alert level to 4 saying that the number of cases within the medical staff is increasing drastically and that it is only a matter of time before a full-blown crisis happens.

However, economic managers and local government leaders said that the current alert level (3) is currently sufficient. This was backed up by several groups from private sectors such as Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion, who stated that NCR’s alert level is “sufficient for now.”

A meeting was held in the second week of January by the Metro Manila Council (MMC), which was attended by a total of 17 mayors and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that the current alert level (3) is to be retained. MMDA chairman Benjamin Abalos Jr. stated that the situation is under control as “restrictions are in place and there was no significant rise in the healthcare utilization rate (HCUR)” even though there was a break in the record of new cases in one day.

Another reason that leads the mayors to vote on retaining the current alert level is that the majority of the vaccinated citizens that are affected by the virus are asymptomatic and can be treated in their local houses.

Abalos’ claims were supported by the Department of Health (DOH) where the infected citizens are mostly experiencing mild symptoms and some

are asymptomatic. However, DOH stated that there has been a slight increase in the HCUR though it is not severe enough to increase the alert level to 4.

Additionally, the data from the different facets of the society says the same thing. On the side of vaccination, the Philippines is attaining substantial development since 60, 200, 690 Filipinos or roughly 54% have already received their first dose, 58, 434, 639 have completed vaccination, and 7, 034, 816 have already had their booster shot.

On the economic side, from the -9.5% last 2020, the Philippine economy grew by 7.7% as 2021 ended. Clearly, the nation is on its way to controlling the situation in a better way while bringing a better light to the future of the Filipino people.

On the flip side, the retaining of the alert level in the NCR does not mean that everything is normal. Two concerning events already happened: the Philippines hitting the three million mark of COVID cases ever since the pandemic started and the highest recorded number of cases in one day being a little over 39,000. Additionally, health experts stated that they predict that the daily cases may peak at 50,000 cases daily. However, do not be too alarmed because throughout the two years of pandemic we have learned the “how to” of safety and readiness.

Placing the NCR on a higher alert level would surely have a dramatic impact to the existing businesses and enterprises. However, these issues about alert levels may or may not affect individual lives for they are to do the same: take care of their own health, follow strict medical instructions, and to isolate if exposed to the virus and be tested and treated properly, these are the only way to make through the pandemic safely. " iva La Republica, Filipina Viva!" were the words the Filipinos chanted on that very day. The day when the Philippines became free from Spanish rule after three centuries of war, havoc, and inequality. Though not “fully independent”, this “independence” led to the establishment of the first Philippine Republic. It was considered as the first constitutional republic in Asia, and is the foundation of the current Philippine government. Truly, its legacy continues up to the present and will continue on as time passes.

On September 15, 1898, the representatives of the different provinces met in Malolos, Bulacan to propose and write a democratic constitution for the independent Philippines. Then, on September 29, the Malolos Congress approved the Philippines independence that dated back to the proclamation made in June 1898. By January 1899, the congress affirmed and established a democratic Republic which is La Constitution Politca de Mil Ochocientos Novente y Nueve also known as the Malolos Constitution. The Democratic Republic ensured the separation of Church and state, civil liberties of the people, and civil and human rights against the abuses of the people in power.

With the success of establishing the first republic, it was inaugurated and celebrated heavily.

However, the turning of events experienced a turmoil.

This turmoil happened a month before, wherein Spain officially sold Philippines to America in December 10, 1898. The Americans who were once allies in fighting for freedom became the new enemies. On February 1899, the war between Philippines and America had begun that caused a lot of damages and deaths. In the end of 1901, General Emilio Aguinaldo was captured and the first republic ended. A

year after, the United States officially stated the end of the war. However, the fight against Imperialism still continued for ten years.

The first ever Republic might be short-lived but it truly contributed a lot to this modern day government we have. It became the basis as it possess the fundamentals particularly the three branches namely, executive branch, independent judiciary, and legislature. It also has its own army that protects the people. It also guaranteed protection from the abuse as the legislative department takes care of the civil and human rights. The executive branch helped in implementing and enforcing the laws. Lastly, the judiciary keeps things balance.

We may all value the lessons history has taught us as what once seemed impossible centuries ago paved a way into establishing our national identity through the founding of the First Republic. As a product of nationalism, perseverance, determination and ambition for a liberated and free Philippines, let us always look back and reflect upon how Filipinos fought for greatness and achieved freedom from Spanish rule. As we are nearing the national elections, let us also be reminded the importance of electing the leaders that will serve the government emphasizing the executive and legislative role as they will dictate the future of us Filipinos and set a course for our country. The Power of Youth ZOELINE HONRADO

“ lmost everything that is great has been done by the youth," says Benjamin Disraeli. It’s amazing, if you think about it, that the youth have this power that would shape the future based on their decisions, and like we all know, that with great power comes also the great responsibility. However, what are we talking about when we pertain to the power in which the youth hold? Well, as a member of the Filipino youth, we should hold the truth high, and let its light shine.

This coming presidential elections, the youth will be given yet another important decision that would set a course for the whole country’s future. The youth, which comprises at least 52% of the total registered voters in the country, would be deciding for our country. The youth would be given once again an important power, and with it, the responsibility entails. They are given a role in which they would be given the responsibility to either maintain, or change the political system in the country. A role to choose the best leader for our country, the leader who would make our country a better place to live in.

However, the role of the youth in our society does not stop only in the upcoming elections. The youth, being today’s future, also holds the power to wield the resources and knowledge that comes in the form of technology. Technology, as we know, is a really big influence in our lives, whether good or bad. These influences of technology, not only revolves around adults, but also to children. Children affected by technology grow faster and discovers so much, even those that they’re still not ready to discover for such a young age.

But even if the new generations are growing up differently than the generations ahead of us, they still serve a very important role to this society. A role to shape this world into a better one, and a role to preserve the beauty of our world.

Since the fate of this world lies on their hands, they must develop skills, in which they would use for the betterment of our society. They must also adapt the right skills, and absorb the proper knowledge, in order for them to grow up containing such good qualities.

As a member of the youth, we are given the freedom to decide on our own. We must make the right decisions, and seek help from those who are more knowledgeable. We must take time to decide what would be the best for our world. We must also make our voices louder, and give our participation in developing this world. May we all remember the importance of youth, and the power they hold. Let us not destroy their beauty, and preserve it for making better and more successful leaders of our world, for the sake for more generations to come, and for all of us to have a wonderful experience living in this world. Faith in the midst of pandemic BEN NIVERA

For centuries, the feast of the Black Nazarene has remained a significant event in the Philippines. Every 9th of January, millions of devotees would flock around the Black Nazarene and walk all around Manila for almost a whole day. Devotees would try to get their towels to touch the image in order to attain the guidance and blessings they believe it would give them. Despite the event being dangerous for many, dedicated believers would still risk their well-being in hopes that miracles would happen and change their lives.

The Feast of the Black Nazarene, also known as Traslacion, is an annual festival held in Manila, Philippines. The event is centered around the Black Nazarene, an image of Jesus with what looks like a burnt outer layer. Many believe that this is caused by the soot from candles, but some believe that it was burned by a fire when it was brought to the Philippines.

The image is believed to grant wishes, cure diseases, and do miracles when touched due to it surviving several disasters and perils in the past. “Traslacion” comes from the Spanish word for translation, which means “transportation” or “movement”. The feast is done to commemorate the transportation of the image of Jesus from Intramuros to Quiapo on January 9, 1987, which later became the date of the feast.

The Black Nazarene usually leaves the Minor Basilica a day or two before the procession. The procession begins early in the morning at around 05:00 AM after a Midnight Mass held in the Quirino Grandstand which is then followed later by a Morning Prayer. It returns to Quiapo in the night of the same day or early morning the day after. Most devotees walk throughout the whole procession along with the image,

while some devotees choose to wait in the Minor Basilica. All devotees wear maroon and yellow shirts, and they walk barefoot as a form of penance and in emulation of Christ's walk to Golgotha. Attendees include devotees, their families, tourists, and members of devotees' associations throughout the country and overseas.

During the procession, millions of devotees would gather around the image hoping to be able to wipe their towels on the Black Nazarene. If they won’t be able to reach it themselves, they would pass their towels to other devotees and to the Hijos del Nazareno just for it to reach the image. People would step on each other, hurt each other and even push each other despite the event being a religious festival, which resulted in many injuries and accidents. The injuries and even deaths of some devotees were caused by factors like fatigue, heat, and being trampled by other devotees.

However, due to the pandemic, the main procession was cancelled during 2021 and 2022. In contrast to the millions of attendees in the past years, only 280,000+ devotees attended the celebration of the Black Nazarene’s feast (mass only) during 2021. Majority of the attendees gathered in Quiapo church while some attended masses at the nearby Sta. Cruz Church and San Sebastian Church.

Even though several people were seen violating the protocols, majority of the devotees abided by them. In 2022, no in-person mass was conducted; masses were live streamed through sites like Facebook and Youtube.

If there’s one thing that the pandemic made us realize,

it's that no matter the circumstance, faith will always find a way to bind us together. When times come when we feel like there’s no hope at all, faith will help us pull ourselves together. In the Philippines where majority are Roman Catholics, the faith in Christ takes precedence over the dangerous force of the pandemic. Even in the middle of a pandemic, Catholic Filipinos have found many ways in expressing their unity in professing their faith — attending online masses; reciting devotional prayers online and even at home; attending religious seminars. The feast of the Black Nazarene has always been, as they say in Tagalog, "agaw-buhay," in this "agaw-buhay" pandemic let us reflect on this feast to realize and recognize the powers of Christ. Well, there is an obvious reason here that I never pieced together because of my lack of curiosity. Teachers are what makes or breaks a school. In Catholic institutions that focus on

Like St. Thomas Aquinas once said: "Love follows knowledge."

In teaching us what we have to know and using their gifts of conveying messages and lessons, teachers show us what we are capable of. We are pushed to our limits and yet, they still remind us that they are there to catch us if we slip and fall. They remind us that by knowing the things

we have the capacity of knowing that we have opportunities to find our strengths and weakness.

We are encouraged to hone our strengths and be courageous against our weaknesses.

We can also realize that teachers can be students too.

They can learn about newer methods that can help them adapt to the different learners that they might face in the future. In adapting, they are not only showing that they are truly willing to be better for the sake of education but they are also staying true to finding ways for their students to learn what they love.

So even if Catholic Teachers' Day is actually made to accompany St. Thomas Aquinas' feast day, we are called to celebrate all that he patron of.

Those are the Catholic schools and students, and when we celebrate those, we also celebrate who help create and mold them.

Our Catholic teachers, who are working and putting their hearts into what they believe in, and having the strength and brevity to share it with us all. [R]

ANIME REVIEW:

That time I got reincarnated as a Slime RENZ BAUTISTA Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Japanese: Tensei Shitara Suraimu Datta Ken) can be considered one of my chill fantasy and isekai classics.

With its first season airing last October 2018 to March 2019 and its second season split into two parts last January and September 2021, it can be considered as one of the few anime that I can recommend for all watchers, from beginners to hardcore otakus. The series is originally a light novel written by Fuse and illustrated by Mitz Vah. Then followed a manga published

by Micro Magazine and Kodansha and an anime adaptation produced by studio Eight Bit. The novel series dated back last 2013, and it still contiues today as of this writing.

[Synopsis] This review feature will only focus on the anime adaptation as it is more accessible. The story revolves around a 37-year-old Satoru Mikami living in Tokyo who died in real life and reincarnated as a slime in an unfamiliar world, hence the title. Whilst succumbing to his injuries in his past life, there is a mysterious voice lingering in his mind reciting commands which eventually he acquired some skills and resistances (there is a lot of skills he acquired in which one paragraph is not enough). He then meets the sealed “Storm Dragon” Veldora who was sealed in the last 300 years for inciting havoc in a town.

Filled with sympathy,

Satoru befriends the dragon and destroys the seal. In return, Veldora bestows the name Rimuru Tempest and grants him divine protection. Afterwards, Rimuru spends his life encountering various monsters and experiencing different events in which I will not cite in detail. [End of Synopsis] As said, the anime adaptation has two seasons with 24 episodes each, the second season split into two parts (or cour[s]) having 12 episodes each. I have first watched the anime last September 2021 having heard of its second cour of the second season already airing. I planned originally to watch on Netflix last August, but unfortunately timings did not meet and I could not have the time to finish the first season due to my back logs in school and personal reasons (coincidentally, the license of the anime on Netflix was about to end). I rewatched it again last September on Netflix. Due to Netflix not yet releasing the first cour of season two, I proceeded to watch season two on Crunchyroll. To my excitement, I finished the first season in just one day. Currently, there is also a spin-off series featuring the life of Rimuru which serves as fillers between seasons 1 and 2 called The Slime Diaries. For now, Seasons 1 and 2 and the spin-off series are now available in Netflix and Crunchyroll.

Overall, the animation is very smooth and the storyline is very straightforward and not hard to comprehend.

Anime episodes frequent you with short recaps. The episodes will leave you wanting to know what to happen next, especially during the second season as you will endure the one week wait before watching the next episode (I watched the second cour while it was airing). The voice acting was great and as I have said, I highly recommend watching this if you want a mixture of fantasy, action, and chill. The music used was pretty great and matches with the overall theme.

Particularly, the closing theme for season 2 part 1, “Storyseeker” by Stereo Drive Foundation made it to my Spotify Wrapped Top 5 – the music is very hype and chill, which is a near leaning to one of my favorite music genres.

To sum it up, I rate the anime as 8.5/10, but not completely a masterpiece to the point that it tops my list as there are very minimal flaws. But, these will not hinder the viewing experience significantly. There are a lot of lessons and experiences every viewer can relate to and learn. The anime is very highly and positively received as it placed high on many charts I look periodically while it was airing. There will be an anime film that will be released on Q4 of 2022.

To end, I will just remind that this anime may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I can say that it is worth your watch time.

The ground shook accompanied with a

flash of light making her lose her footing, falling down to the ground of the temple gardens. When she opened their eyes, the skies were tinted with a sickening red that replaced the beautiful blue it once was. The air felt acrid and heavy, a sense of anger from above came pushing itself into everyone’s consciousness; it felt vengeful, and nothing is more terrifying than a god with vengeance in its mind.

A sound that can only be compared to some sort of psychedelic static began ringing in her ear. It soon mixed with the sounds of people screaming and multiple footsteps surrounding her, only to be shaken from a trance-like effect by someone grabbing her by the arm and dragging her away from where she had fallen.

She was tasked to take the Head Priestess to the preservation chambers.

The Head Priestess looked at her as they reached the pod covered in glowing runes, a fond smile on her lips.

“I trust you, Malia,” she had said to her before handing her a staff and pushing her inside the chamber. “May you find peace in the time ahead.”

A bluish green. That was the last color that made its way in her vision as the pod doors slid to a close, a freezing temperature taking over her body as she slipped out of consciousness. It was a beautiful color; viridian.

Her heart will keep beating for the one that shares her name with that color, even if time tries its best to take it away from her.

For time makes the heart grow fonder, even if it cannot recall why it beats. ~ A metal tower pokes up from underneath the frozen mountain range as the cold wind brings forward the melody of a goddess’ song. LOOKING BACK The bright sun is shining The grass is swaying 7 stepping paws are walking The lively dog ahead is barking The dog behind is panting It stopped for a while for its resting Its 3 legs can't keep up For its legs hurt a bunch The dog in front slows down Eventually halted and sat down It looks back and patiently waits Their tiredness slowly fades Together they walk once again Driving away all the pain Small acts that bonded them more The beauty in waiting is truly something to adore - Trisha Ilar

F O R G E T N O T M Y P E N I T E N C E I am a cavern, made to be hollow Representing a lightless cave As my creator, you entered, knowing It’s more stupid than brave Your eyes adjusted to the dark Though my color never changed You stared at me, having created The perfect place to blame For your incompetence and idiocy Just to know how it feels To be inside a place that could scare you Prompting you to take to your heels Laughter bubbled from your throat Echoing inside the walls you built Then in a flash, you ran out screaming Leaving me with your guilt
