Fire leaves students homeless CHRIS GRABER Lantern reporter graber.54@osu.edu An electrical ÿre torched the attic of a house at 295 E. 17th Ave. Monday afternoon, leaving 10 students without housing. Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jerry Birkhimer estimated the total damage to be $10,000. No one was injured. “We had around 45 ÿreÿghters on the scene and we had it contained within the ÿrst ÿve or 10 minutes,” Birkhimer said. Campus ÿres “are not very frequent but when they do happen there is usually a lot of damage.
“It was daytime. We got here early, attacked the ÿre early and pretty much saved the residents’ lives except for the damage in the attic.” Although the three-story house was still intact, Birkhimer said the house could be uninhabitable for as long as a month. “They need to talk to the landlord about ÿnding additional housing because it could be three weeks before this is ready to be inhabited again.” Birkhimer said. “Maybe longer than, depending on what the maintenance people ÿnd, whether the entire roof needs [to be replaced] and how much electrical damage [there is].” Evelyn Curry, a resident of the house and third-year in journalism, said the ÿre department informed her that it’s possible the house could be permanently ruined.

The O-H-I-O link on Ohio State’s home page has 4,373 photos of Buckeyes worldwide performing the signature cheer, and that number increases every day. There are so many photos, in fact, that when Ted Hattemer, the director of new media for University Communications, tried to pull them all up on his screen, his computer froze. “I’m never going to click on ‘view all’ again,” he said.
He said the Web site, which is in its third year, was started because the university received so many e-mails from Buckeye fans around the world. It wasn’t until they received a picture of OSU student Nicholas Pavlik, who was deployed in Afghanistan, that they realized the project could be something special. “That’s when we thought there’s more here that we could do with it,” he said. The site now receives pictures of the cheer performed at weddings, family vacations, from students studying abroad or those just around the OSU campus. The photos “come in all hours of the day from all corners of the world,” Hattemer said.
He wouldn’t expect anything else. “Ohio State has a lot of pride,” he said. “No other school has [a cheer] like it.” Since the Web site started tracking views in June 2008, it has received 6,960 picture views and about 1.5 million hits. “But that could be your grandma clicking on your picture 12 times in a row,” Hattemer said. He said every photograph typically gets about 12 views. Photos that are out of the ordinary can receive 1,000 views or more. Hattemer said he receives help monitoring the pictures from three other staff members and two

BEVAN SCHNECK Lantern reporter schneck.9@osu.edu Monday was business as usual at Ohio State, despite snow, ice and poor road conditions. The winter weather created a massive pile-up of more than 40 cars north of Franklin County in the afternoon, shutting down the southbound lanes of Interstate 71. There were no injuries in the crash, said Wanda Mitchell, dispatcher at the Delaware post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. But numerous vehicles were blocking the roadways for hours, including several semi-trucks. “There are so many, it’s going to take a while for us to catch up,” Mitchell said. Meanwhile all classes and events on campus continued, regardless of the weather. University staff typically see a storm coming and get road crews to start plowing in a timely manner, said Jim Lynch, director of OSU Media Relations.
The university allowed all drivers to use the campus parking garages after 4 p.m. yesterday so crews could remove snow from the parking lots. “We’re unlike K-12 schools,” Lynch said. “We don’t often close because of inclement weather.” Lynch said the university stays open because the OSU Medical Center must stay open. The efforts from road crews around campus weren’t enough to stop Elizabeth Middy from having a minor car accident in the afternoon. She and another driver collided in slick road conditions on Cannon Drive near Ohio Stadium. There were no injuries. Middy was on campus to pick her mother up from work, who didn’t want to drive home in the snow and heavy trafÿc. Middy said it took her more than an hour to reach State Route 23 north and Interstate 270 from State Route 315 north, following the accident. Total snow accumulation was expected to reach 6 to 9 inches by this morning.

With rising interest rates, it’s not uncommon for American credit card holders to quickly accumulate debts they can’t afford. For those who ÿnd themselves buried in debt, an Ohio State alumna can help. Jamie Chase, a 1999 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communication, is a co-inventor of American Debt Relief Challenge, a program that has saved Americans a total of $20 million, Chase said. The ADR Challenge has accomplished these savings by simply transferring consumer debt from banks to credit unions. Chase said a typical interest rate at a bank is
18 to 20 percent, while a credit union averages 6 to 12 percent. Credit unions can charge less interest because they are nonproÿt. “Banks exist to make a proÿt,” Chase said. “Credit unions are more like libraries; they only exist to serve.” She said credit unions are guided by a board of JAMIE CHASE directors, all of whom are members of the community. “This means they are more willing to help people in the community whose house[s] might be facing foreclosure, for example,” Chase said. “They only exist to make life better, and a lot of people don’t
know that. Why would I choose to use a bank when a credit union does the same stuff?” In addition to her work in the U.S., Chase has gone overseas to explore the beneÿts of credit unions. In 2006, she went on a goodwill mission to Mali, West Africa. There she found credit unions improving the quality of life for young girls who would otherwise be forced to beg and sell their bodies to survive on their own. Chase said the girls were taken off the street and sent to attend the Here Je Development Center in Mali, where they received training in traditional African arts. After graduation, the girls were given loans by a Mali credit union so they could create their own businesses.

SARAH THOMPSON Lantern reporter thompson.1489@osu.edu Ohio State has again made the Peace Corps’ top 25 list of large universities nationwide producing undergraduate alumni volunteers. OSU is ranked No. 13 with 61 alumni volunteering, an increase from the 57 that served last year. The in˜ ux in volunteers is not surprising. OSU has always been a source for volunteer work. “Since the Peace Corps was founded in 1961, 1,534 OSU alumni have served in the Peace Corps,” said Christine Torres, spokeswoman for the Chicago Regional Peace Corps Ofÿce. “This actually makes OSU the No. 10 all-time producer of Peace Corps volunteers.” OSU is also ranked ÿrst in the state for volunteers, she said. In addition to its size, Torres said OSU’s programs make it a good match for the Peace Corps. “A lot of the top programs at OSU also match
up to the top programs at Peace Corps,” Torres said. “In that way it’s a great match for Peace Corps and that’s why we spend so much time focused on OSU.” These programs include education, English, math, science and engineering. Though 89 percent of volunteers have at least an undergraduate degree, Torres said a degree is not required. What is, though, is experience. “They really need to have years or at least some solid skill sets or experience behind them,” Torres said. “Like someone who has operated or owned or managed a farm; maybe they don’t have the full four-year degree but they have very applicable skills in agriculture.” The beneÿts for volunteers are plentiful, including graduate programs that allow for volunteer work and course credit at the same time. In addition, some programs offer tuition assistance to alumni who have ÿnished service and are applying to graduate school. Assistance also fully covers all living expenses, medical and dental services and transportation to and from the country while in service, Torres said. There are personal beneÿts as well, said Jack
Campbell, two-time Peace Corps volunteer and Peace Corps coordinator on campus. “The personal satisfaction of helping others is huge,” Campbell said. “[There are also] travel opportunities by using vacation time of two days per month of service.” Campbell said volunteers also get to develop leadership skills, international experience and lifelong friendships. For today’s society in particular, Campbell said the beneÿts of serving include job placement support and “expanding one’s mental vision of the world we live in.” The Peace Corps ranks its top volunteer-producing schools annually according to student body size. Small schools have less than 5,000 undergraduates, medium-sized schools have between 5,000 and 15,000 graduates, and large schools have more than 15,000 graduates. OSU came behind the University of Washington, which holds the top spot for large schools. It has 101 volunteers serving in the Corps. To contact a local recruitment ofÿce or to learn more about the program, visit peacecorps.gov.
Alumni Association seeking candidates for awards MATT STROSS Lantern reporter stross.1@osu.edu The Ohio State Alumni Association is accepting nominations for its annual Alumni Awards. The Alumni Awards are an OSU tradition and have celebrated the achievements of outstanding alumni for 52 years. The awards consist of seven different categories, ranging from community service to career achievement. To be eligible for an award, the nominee must be living at the time of nomination, must not be on the Alumni Association board of directors and must be an OSU alum — with the exception of the Heinlen Award for university advocacy. Once a nomination is submitted, the selection process is intricate, said Erin Essak Koop, director of Alumni Programs. “In each category, alumni from around the country serve as jurors and score the nominations submitted. The jurors make individual decisions; there is no consultation among jury members,” Koop said.
Koop said that on average the Alumni Association receives 70 nominations per year. This year’s winners will be presented with their award in the new Ohio Union. The ceremony will be held on Sept. 24. “Each recipient receives an award which is presented to them at the Alumni Awards Ceremony,” Koop said. “Recipients of the Duncan Alumni Citizenship Award also have a plaque made in their honor that is placed outside of Longaberger Alumni House.” While there are seven categories for awards, the most prestigious award is the Alumni Medalist Award. This award is presented for national or international career achievement. Previous winners of this award include Thomas Wheeler, a member of President Barack Obama’s transition team. Other notable alumni who have received awards include Jim Tressel in 2004, Nancy Zimpher, former president of the University of Cincinnati, in 2004, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio Thomas J. Moyer in 2003. For the 2010 Alumni Awards, nominations must be received by March 31 for consideration. For more information on how to nominate a worthy alumnus or alumna, or to download a nomination form, visit ohiostatealumni.org
VT won’t pull funding from campus paper TONIA MOXLEY AND MIKE ALLEN The Roanoke Times, Va. (MCT) Virginia Tech will not pull funding for the publisher of the campus newspaper, nor will it ban student organizations from buying ads with university funds, as a Tech advisory group had proposed, ofÿcials announced Friday. “This is a student issue. These are students raising this issue with their fellow students” and not an administrative initiative, university spokesman Larry Hincker said. Any effort to end Tech’s contract with the Collegiate Times or its parent company, or to ban student organizations from advertising in the newspaper, “is not in the ofÿng,” Hincker said. “That is not the position of this administration.” Kelly Wolff of Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech, the parent company of the CT, lauded the announcement. “This is the right decision and we appreciate that the administration has voiced it so quickly,” Wolff wrote in an e-mail. “It is completely consistent with Virginia Tech’s previous history of support for the right of students to control editorial content in student media, which has been laudable among universities.” The announcement came after a growing controversy over freedom of speech and freedom of the press touched off Thursday by a dispute between Tech’s Commission on Student Affairs and the campus newspaper.
By Friday afternoon, both the Virginia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Philadelphia-based Foundation for Individual Rights in Education had rushed to the defense of the newspaper. The commission, an advisory group made up of students, faculty and staff, had objected to a CT editorial policy that allows anonymous reader comments to be posted to collegiatetimes.com. Some of the commission members had characterized some of the comments as homophobic, racist or otherwise offensive and demanded the CT take action to stop them. Ongoing discussions between the groups about the policy had broken down last week. In a letter sent Monday to Wolff, commission Chairwoman Michelle McLeese wrote that if the CT did not return to the bargaining table, the commission would recommend the university pull its funding for the company and ban student organizations from using university funds to advertise in the newspaper. In response, Wolff declined to participate in future meetings and said EMCVT would sue if the university pursued the recommendations. Wolff further warned that funding cuts could jeopardize the ÿnancial stability of the student yearbook and literary magazine, as well as the campus radio and television stations, all of which EMCVT oversees and operates. Policies governing third-party comments on newspaper and television news Web sites vary widely, and there are few set standards to govern what is a relatively new and experimental medium for journalism. To comment on news stories or opinion pieces, readers of the CT must register with a name and veriÿable e-mail address. In so doing,

the reader agrees to abide by CT standards, including avoiding threatening or libelous statements and personal attacks. Readers who ÿnd comments questionable may ˜ ag them for review by CT staff. Staff members then determine whether or not the comments should be deleted, Wolff said. Roanoke media outlets, including The Roanoke Times, all allow anonymous comments to some degree and employ various screening systems for questionable content. Viewers of WDBJ (Channel 7) may post comments on most, but not all, news stories without registration or veriÿcation of identity. If other readers ˜ ag posts as offensive or questionable, they can be removed, said Kelly Zuber, WDBJ’s director of digital media. WSLS (Channel 10) allows comments on every news story, but visitors must register with the Web site and verify an e-mail address before they can post comments, according to Warren Fiihr, vice president and general manager of WSLS. The Roanoke Times Web site, roanoke.com, has two different systems of comment participation — one each for discussion forums and blogs. To participate in discussion forums, a visitor must provide a name and an e-mail that can then be veriÿed. Commenting on a roanoke. com blog does not require registration or veriÿcation of an e-mail, but comments are moderated by individual bloggers. Roanoke.com does not allow direct comments on stories. Finance show for kids is among graduate’s projects
“Credit unions are meant to reduce poverty,” Chase said. “They break that cycle.” Chase said a lot of people don’t know the beneÿts of credit unions. This means they can easily be misled by banks. “You made the choice to spend the money,” she said. “But it’s really unfair how banks entice consumers in with 0 percent starting interest.” In an effort to spread awareness about personal ÿnances, Chase, also a previous PBS producer, played a big part in starting PBS’s “BizKid$,” a show geared toward children that features children with their own businesses. The show demonstrates how the children manage the money they earn through their businesses. The show is produced by the same people who were behind “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” Chase said the goal for “BizKid$” is to “create the same level of awareness about ÿnances as ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy’ created for science.” Chase said the show isn’t allowed to directly mention credit unions to children viewers, but they decided to completely fund the show to spread general ÿnancial awareness. In addition to these accomplishments, Chase owns her own business, called Credit Union Strategic Planning. She said her ofÿcial job title is “principle instigator of goodness.”

Other than that, he said the Web site pretty much runs itself. “We just check the resolution and make sure they entered the right keywords for the picture, then just click enter,” Hattemer said. The Web site will soon offer a free iPhone application that will make uploading pictures even easier. The application will allow users to access their iPhone camera and upload an O-H-I-O picture directly to the Web site. “We want to automate it as much as we can and make it convenient,” he said. Michael Simmons, a 2009 graduate of OSU, submitted a picture to the Web site featuring himself and friends in the Ecuadorian Andes at the Incan ruins during a trip for Habitat for Humanity. “We decided to do the O-H-I-O because we were all Ohio State students, and we all had, and still have, lots of pride in our school,” Simmons said. Simmons decided to upload the picture to the Web site because pictures he added in the past were used for an OSU commercial, which aired nationally during OSU football games. “To be honest I decided to add the picture to the Web site mostly because I had been on the commercial before so I thought that maybe I could get on another one,” Simmons said. Hattemer said that in addition to the pictures being used on the OSU commercial,
Her job title is a direct re° ection of her personal mission statement, she said. “Find your life’s purpose. The thing that led me to this wasn’t trying to make the most money. My life purpose is to help people. That’s why I have a job title like instigator of goodness.” Chase, a third-generation OSU graduate, said she credits OSU with helping her learn how she could create her own path in life. She said she remembers being in lecture halls full of people and found it amazing that she could still receive personal help from her professors. “Ohio State taught me life is what you make of it,” she said. Chase said that she is dyslexic and is still grateful toward her academic adviser, Larry Greenÿeld, who she said helped her tackle college. Chase even said that dyslexia has helped her career. “We have a different way of looking at things and that is really helpful in inventing things,” she said. Her uncle, who also had dyslexia, was the lead inventor of the ATM. Chase said he served as a mentor in her life. For college students looking for ÿnancial advice, Chase said to simply avoid credit cards. “More college students drop out of college due to credit card debt than failing grades,” she said. “When people offer you a credit card they are doing you no favor.” For more information on the ADR Challenge, visit adrchallenge.com. Timothy Mazik, a student in ÿnance, took an O-H-I-O picture while on Contingency Operating Base Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq. His photo is one of 98 military photos on the Web site. “We took the photo because it was something we all wanted to do,” Mazik said. “We were sitting around one day and thought it would be a good idea, as we are all huge Ohio State fans.”

You understand the practical demands of situations at home (and elsewhere), and you use your heartfelt excitement to expand on a mystical or traditional theme and make it your own. To get the advantage, check the day’s rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0 the most challenging. ARIES March 21 – April 19 Today is a 6 -- You get to work creatively with a partner or team member. You surprise yourself with the flood of ideas and emotions flowing into your projects.
VIRGO Aug. 23 – Sept. 22 Today is an 8 -- Reveal your creative genius by utilizing an image from a dream to enhance a presentation. Surprise others with your use of classic oldies. LIBRA Sept. 23–Oct. 22 Today is an 8 -- The key to progress is imagination and creativity. Don’t worry about the finished product. You can always make changes later. SCORPIO Oct. 23 – Nov. 21 Today is a 7 -- You get a bit of breathing room where family issues are concerned. Remain in close contact to strengthen a relationship. This will pay off.
TAURUS April 20 – May 20 Today is an 8 -- Surprise yourself with a new twist on an old theme. Get out of a rut you’ve worn, and bring a good friend along for the ride.
SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22 – Dec. 21 Today is a 7 -- Household discussions focus on immediate needs. Spend money now to save it later. Choose durable products or parts. Teamwork gets it done quicker.
GEMINI May 21 – June 21 Today is a 7 -- Show your face early as you develop a concept that has been rolling around in your subconscious. Feedback keeps you on target and in motion.
CAPRICORN Dec. 22 – Jan. 19 Today is an 8 -- Sometime today you change your thinking, big time. This will interrupt the flow, but it gets you into the mainstream, where you want to be.
CANCER June 22 – July 22 Today is a 6 -- Change is certain now. The only question is how you’ll handle it. Think early and long before you make decisions that cannot be reversed.
AQUARIUS Jan. 20 – Feb. 18 Today is an 8 -- Money arrives from a peculiar source. Verify the amount before spending. Encourage your partner to make an important change, but keep it private.
LEO July 23 – Aug. 22 Today is a 7 -- Take all the time you need to evaluate creative ideas that surface as you go through the day. Make notes for future reference. Get your ducks in a row.
PISCES Feb. 19 – March 20 Today is a 7 -- Your partner would just love to take the reins of authority and keep them. Let that happen today, but reserve the right to take over when necessary.

faces top-ranked Iowa on Friday Ryan has said time and time again that the goal this season is to take all 10, and that they will settle for nothing less. Last season, the Buckeyes fell just short of a national title to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The competition was the closest in recent history, falling by just 4.5 points. For his turn-around season in 2009, Ryan was named National Coach of the Year. He has led the Buckeyes to seven conference
Hawkeyes this season, but might not be the last. The two teams could easily meet in the Big Ten Championship and NCAA Championships. “We’re looking forward to going out there Friday night and wrestling them,” Ryan said. Ryan is covering all of his bases, focusing on the meets at hand, the tournaments ahead and the future of the team. It would be no surprise if after a hard-fought competition at Nationals, he sees another National Coach of the Year title.
wins for two consecutive seasons, with the opportunity to add his eighth conference win this weekend against Iowa. Coaching against his beloved alma mater isn’t the only added pressure. No. 1 Iowa has remained undefeated all season. “It’s always fun, there’s a lot of history there in the sport and we know they’ll go through Iowa City,” Ryan said. OSU is also rich in tradition and history as the Buckeyes have several national championships under their belt. This will be the first meeting between the Buckeyes and

Matta wonders if that number would be even higher looking four or five seasons back. “A lot of people don’t realize or appreciate that we have played a tremendous schedule here,” Matta said. One explanation for the high number is because OSU has to play eight of 10 conference opponents twice, meaning perennial top 25 teams such as Purdue,

have one of the best mid-range games on the team and has seemingly mastered the art of the 15-foot baseline jumper. Though he doesn’t take the shot all that often, when he does take it, it’s a virtual certainty that it is going to go in. For coach Thad Matta, it’s that consistency that makes Madsen so valuable. “You never worry with Kyle that he’s going to make the wrong read,” Matta said. “I love it to death that you know what you’re getting with him.” For a Buckeye team that is heavily dependent on its five starters, Madsen has become OSU’s most reliable option off the bench. Although his increased contribution may have come as a welcome surprise to most Buckeye fans, his teammate said it didn’t necessarily come out of nowhere. “His skills have always been there,” Lighty said. “He’s been knocking the shots down. We see him do it every day in practice and he’s doing it in games now.”
Michigan State and Wisconsin usually appear on the Buckeyes’ schedule more than once. There is a lot of planning that goes into finding the right combination between the non-conference schedule and the Big Ten schedule, Matta said. “Scheduling is such a delicate balance,” Matta said. “I don’t really know if there’s a right way to do it.” Scheduling too many underwhelming opponents can leave a team unprepared for tournament play. Adding too many elite opponents can hurt if the team

isn’t talented enough to compete at that high level all season. Matta has certainly seemed to find that effective balance this season as the Buckeyes have reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth straight season. Matta said that he plans to continue working to try scheduling major conference opponents for future years. Fans might tire of seeing teams such as Delaware State or Eastern Michigan on the schedule, but they should expect to see opponents like West Virginia and Butler as well.

Buckeyes need Buford to step up for stretch run
defense Loyola coach Jimmy Patsos used to hold former Davidson star Stephen Curry scoreless last season. Patsos knew his team couldn’t stop Curry, so he double-teamed Davidson’s sweet-shooting guard the entire game. Curry only got up three shots and didn’t score, but Davidson still won by 30. Obviously, it’s preposterous to think any coach would become that desperate in an NCAA Tournament game. However, a junk defense such as a box-andone is not out of the question. That brings me back to Buford. He’s the only other player on Ohio State’s roster besides Turner who is a complete offensive player. Buford is capable of getting his own shot and finishing at the rim, at the foul line or beyond the arc. As sports clichés go, Buford is OSU’s “X-factor.” The key for Boy Wonder is to be an efficient scorer. Ohio State is only 7-6 when he has 12 or more field goal attempts. Forced shots and quick shots usually result in fast break points for the other team. If Buford can be a solid but not necessarily spectacular Robin, OSU fans may find the Bat Signal in the skies over Indianapolis, the site of this season’s Final Four.

Stiff competition
When fans of the Ohio State men’s basketball team look at the team’s schedule and see several tough stretches on it, they have to wonder if they’re prepared or tested enough to win those games. Pundits look at OSU’s early non-conference schedule against teams such as Presbyterian, Alcorn State and Lipscomb and contend that there are too many non-challenges. Even playing in a difficult conference like the Big Ten, some believe that the Buckeyes don’t schedule enough tough opponents. Other critics point to the Buckeyes’ current strength of schedule, which ranks 83rd, as evidence to their claims. But are the Buckeyes playing one of the softer schedules in the country? Coach Thad Matta doesn’t think so. “Things have been made of our schedule and if you truly look at other team’s schedules, there’s really not a difference,” Matta said. Overlooked are the games against ranked opponents California, North Carolina, Butler and West Virginia. Each of those four matchups took place away from the Schottenstein Center. In fact, since the start of the ‘07-‘08 season, OSU has played 32 ranked teams — the most in the country — entering Wednesday’s meeting with No. 4 Purdue.

center Kyle Madsen digs in on defense during Ohio State’s 85-63 victory over Minnesota on Jan. 31.
Twin towers: Madsen gives OSU sizeable advantage at center nicK OTTe Lantern reporter otte.28@osu.edu When Kyle Madsen arrived at Ohio State, he made an interesting first impression. “He was a little bigger and had long, floppy hair,” junior David Lighty said. “When I first saw him, he looked like Shaggy [from] ‘Scooby-Doo.’” Three years removed from his first season in Columbus, however, Madsen has changed a lot. He has shed the cartoon character image and, for the first time in his career, the senior on the OSU men’s basketball team has made a consistent impact on the court.
In his final season Madsen has come off the bench for the Buckeyes and averaged a career-high 12.7 minutes per game, but more importantly, he has made his minutes count. He has scored in each of the last six games, including a career-best 11 points in the Buckeyes’ win at Indiana last Wednesday. Perhaps aiding Madsen’s emergence is the recent play of starting center Dallas Lauderdale. Like Madsen, Lighty said, Lauderdale is playing what may be the best basketball of his career. Against Indiana, Madsen and Lauderdale “came out and had terrific games,” Lighty said. “Both of them are playing at their peaks right now and that’s a really good thing for us.”
As Lauderdale continues to improve, opposing teams have started to pay him more attention on the offensive end. They are forced to prepare for the specific style that he brings to the floor — a style that Madsen said is much different than his own. “Me and Dallas are really different players,” Madsen said. “Dallas is a lot more explosive blocking shots and dunking the ball. My game is a little bit more cerebral, stepping outside and shooting the shots when I’m open.” Like Madsen said, he might not provide the crowd-pleasing thunderous dunks or blocks that Lauderdale often features. However, he may

Bucks need a Robin to aide Batman
Batman and Robin have been a staple of American entertainment for half a century. Everyone knows Batman is the boss and is always in control. No one would ever mistake the “Boy Wonder” for the “Caped Crusader.” Applied to the Ohio State men’s basketball team, Evan Turner would be Batman and William Buford would be Robin. But in order for the Buckeyes to make a deep NCAA Tournament run, something they are very capable of, Robin is going to have to play a more prominent role in OSU’s offense. Buford’s statistics are actually a bit puzzling. When Turner’s been in the lineup, Buford has put up 14 points a game. In Turner’s absence, Buford was good for 15 points a game — obviously not a big difference, but in order to understand Buford’s significance to the offense, one must dig deeper. The great thing about Buford is that he’s shown the potential to be a very dynamic offensive player. When his shot wasn’t falling against Wisconsin last month, Buford hit the glass and grabbed 12 rebounds. He had 10 assists in a win over Eastern Michigan earlier this season. On Jan. 31 versus Minnesota, Boy Wonder had his shot going. His form isn’t what you would call textbook, but when his higharching jumpers are falling, it’s a thing of beauty. Buford finished with a career-high 26 points. College basketball isn’t the NBA. Teams can’t just ride a superstar player who can go one-on-five — a la LeBron James or Dwayne Wade — to the title. I’d argue the last team to win the national championship that truly rode the coattails of one player to the title would be the 1988 Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas lost 11 times that year, the most ever of any team to win the title. Entering the tournament, the Jayhawks were a No. 6 seed. But National Player of the Year Danny Manning and the “Miracles” would not be denied. In Kansas’ 83-79 victory over Oklahoma in the National Championship Game, Manning had 31 points, 18 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. That was nearly 22 years ago and college basketball has evolved since then. The further Ohio State advances in the tournament, the more defenses will attempt to take Turner out of the game. Opposing coaches will attempt to conjure up some of the most preposterous game plans in an attempt to neutralize “The Villain.” OSU could see something similar to the triangle and two

Familiar foe: Coach leads wrestling team against alma mater, No. 1 Hawkeyes allySOn KraeMer Lantern reporter kraemer.18@osu.edu Coach Tom Ryan is making history at Ohio State. Ryan is in his fourth season at the helm for the men’s wrestling team. A 1993 Iowa graduate, Ryan was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American. As a Hawkeye, Ryan was also a two-time Big Ten conference champion. He also was an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association conference champion at Syracuse in 1989.
Ryan made history with the Hawkeyes, recording a nation-best 47-match conference win streak in dual matches. Upon graduation, Ryan served as the assistant coach at Indiana from 1992-94. A year later, he got his big break. He joined the Hofstra Pride at a time when the program needed his coaching more than ever. In his tenure at Hofstra he led the Pride to six consecutive conference titles in both the Colonial Athletic Association and Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. In three of the remaining seasons, he led the Pride to a second-place conference finish. In 2006, Ryan took the head coaching position with the
Buckeyes to compete in a conference he was quite familiar with. Upon accepting the coaching position, he committed himself to four generations of OSU wrestling coaches. The Buckeyes have produced 12 National Champions, 65 All-Americans, 23 Big Ten Champions, 17 All-Star Class participants, two Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients and five Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame inductees. Ryan is contributing to the wrestling legacy he has been left with. Thus far, Ryan has taken 78 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and has fostered 18 All-Americans, earning 45 conference titles. In 2009, Ryan took nine out of 10 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, the most in program history.
