A Discovery into the Unknown

Words: Mike Trott he first official pictures of the fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery have been released prior to its first public appearance at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

As is becoming customary for car manufacturers these days, the new Discovery has been teased out to the public over several weeks, with various ‘ambassadors’ and celebrities helping to showcase some of the latest features to grace the new Discovery.

However, while getting Bear Grylls to jump out of a plane and using the new ‘Intelligent Seat Fold’ technology is eye-catching, not many of us will be trying to reconfigure our Discovery’s seating arrangement through our smartphone whilst plummeting at 125mph towards the Earth’s surface.

Just a hunch.

Sadly this issue closed just before the Paris Motor Show and the Discovery’s 28 September debut, so we’ll be bringing you all the facts and in-depth

analysis on the new Disco in our next issue (December) of The Landy.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t tell you a little bit more about the Discovery in the meantime. Firstly, though, a word from Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer, who said: ‘New Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover’s design and engineering teams have revolutionised the Discovery DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV.’ If we break down Mr McGovern’s statement, you can get an idea of what we’re likely to get with the new Discovery. It is still very much a large SUV and will top the Discovery family tree ahead of the Discovery Sport. However, following the launch of the baby Disco two years ago, the exterior of that vehicle was always going to dictate the design of this new daddy Disco.

As with the modern-day Range Rover clan, it’s difficult to distinguish between the new Discovery and Disco Sport from the front and only when you

peer down the side of the vehicle that you notice any standout differences.

Notably, this new Discovery sits more squat on the road than its predecessor, which may make it look – and drive – better on the road, but what will the reduced ground clearance make of terrain that hasn’t been steamrollered? Will it be as good off-road as a D4? If so, it will no doubt require all of Land Rover’s latest off-road tech to ensure that it is.

Inside, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in an enlarged Disco Sport. There’s still seven seats which folds completely flat for maximum practicality, but those rear seats will be suitable for kings and queens, and not just little princes and princesses.

Last month Land Rover unveiled a new 240hp version of its 2.0-litre four-cylinder TD4 Ingenium engine and we’re putting our money on that being the engine that the brand launches with. Figures are expected to be around 45mpg for a combined fuel economy cycle and with performance delivering a 0-60mph sprint in about 8.0 seconds. On paper at least, the new Discovery is shaping up nicely.

Prices are estimated to start from approximately £45,000 – a substantial amount of money for a vehicle that prides itself on being family orientated.

With the introduction of the Discovery Sport there was always going to be a free pass onto higher tariffs, though.

We’ll have to wait to drive the Discovery to give a full verdict, but if it’s a little bit better than the Discovery 4 in every area, this is going to be one hell of a Land Rover and one hell of a car.

Ingenium goes petrol

ince 2015, we’ve been enjoying the Ingenium four-cylinder turbodiesels in Land Rover vehicles. But from next year, we’ll be able to enjoy the aluminium Ingenium engines in petrol form too.

The new units work on the same 500cc per cylinder format, making for a simple modular, scalable design, although we’ll mostly be seeing a four-cylinder 2.0-litre unit we imagine. The engines are now in production at JLR’s £1bn Engine Manufacturing Centre.

The units feature a twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings, electrohydraulic valves and an integrated exhaust manifold among other delights. Friction levels are very low, so this should result in an engine that’s efficient and refined, and one which doesn’t use too much fuel. The company reckons the new Ingenium petrol engines will be 25% more powerful and use 15% less fuel than outgoing units.

While that’s something to look forward to, what’s possibly even more interesting is that these engines can be mated to a new automatic transmis-

sion that is called transcend. This is a project that has cost £30m, but it sounds deeply original. They’ve found a way of creating an ultra-wide radio spread of 20:1 so that it integrates a low-range box, as well as dual-clutch and hybrid technologies to offer better off-road performance yet with fuel savings of a further 10%.

The eight-speed transmission has more than double the ratio spread of any other eight-speed autos. It also weighs 20kg less than any other and can be used for rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles – like a Land Rover for instance.

And now the company is about to open a facility in Slovakia.

The plant, at Nitra in Slovakia, is being built and, when it’s completed, it will be 300,000sq m of aluminium manufacturing and engineering expertise. The plant is designed to build

the next generation of all-aluminium vehicles for the group.

The Nitra facility will cost £1bn and should be able to make 150,000 vehicles a year, with production starting at the end of 2018. When it’s up and running it will employ 2800 people.

Land Rover goes global

I

t was only in 2012 that Jaguar Land Rover opened its first overseas manufacturing plant, in China.

Since then it has been joined by plants in India and Brazil, while the UK remains the bedrock on which these foreign adventures are based.

So far, more than 40,000 Slovaks have applied for jobs there.

Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Slovakia said: ‘The Jaguar Land Rover investment confirms that Slovakia is a good place to do business and an investment of such magnitude will

have a positive ripple effect not only for the region of Nitra, but also for the whole of Slovakia.’

One thing is certain, Jaguar Land Rover’s global domination strategy, sorry, global manufacturing strategy, is moving forward in leaps and bounds.

Sparks set to fly at Stoneleigh I

n just a couple of months’ time, the season-ending Great British Land Rover Show will be here once more, and the show organisers are working at full capacity to ensure you have the most memorable show this year.

The show will round off the season in style on Sunday 27 November and, as it’ll be held once again at the magnificent indoor NAEC Stoneleigh venue in Warwickshire, it’s guaranteed not to be rained off.

Expect fabulous line-ups of Land Rovers, the finest Green Oval products on the market and a whole load of features to entertain your inner-Landy.

For those of you wishing to get your hands dirty at the show, we are pleased to announce that Plasma Part will be

running their very own workshop feature on the day for all you budding, skilled or just plain curious welders.

Plasma Part welding guru, Thomas Buckle, said: ‘We will have a full-scale demonstration of all the tools and machinery that we have on offer. It will cover pretty much everything you’d want to be doing in your own garage.

‘Demonstrations will include sessions on plasma cutting, TIG and MIG welding, and arc welding, while we’ll also be dishing out all the best tips to handle your equipment and will have all the gear on show for visitors to browse through.’

Not only will Plasma Part have all the equipment you need on sale, but they are giving you the chance to try

your hand on the day, so you can get a real feel for welding.

Two demonstrators will be running simultaneously all day so you can take home a practical experience, and maybe even use it as a ‘try before you buy’ exercise. Even if you just want to be educated in the art of welding, the team will happily welcome you to their stand and you can go home more knowledgeable and clued up on welding at the very least.

Can I have a word…?

I

t dawns on me while writing these characters that, without realising, we’ve sort of overloaded The Landy with V8s this month.

Naturally, as someone who loves the smell of petrol – and is consistently removed from fuel station forecourts – I’m an admirer of the eight-cylinder V layout. Petrolheads have a special relationship with this style of engine.

Don’t ask me why – we just do.

So exactly what vehicles, you may wonder, are filled with V8s within these very pages?

Well, firstly, we’ve decided to go all Sherlock this month and delve into the emerging trend of imported South African Range Rover Classics.

For reasons you’ll find out on Page 20, these imported wonders can be the ticket to Range Rover ownership, without the worry of what state your vehicle is in underneath.

Also this month, a trip down to Arkonik in Somerset gets us up-close and personal with a very handsomelooking 90 (Page 24), while we’ve another Defender (Page 34) on show – but this is not a Defender of regular wheelbase proportions...

Peter Clarke gives us the rundown on his extensive collection of Series Land Rovers, both past and present (Page 28).

Our resident Td5 90 comes back with its first report on its new Cooper tyres and you can find out what we’ve been feeding it this month over on Page 48.

Show and tell for ACH A CH SPECIAL VEHICLES is readying a new showroom at its Northamptonshire premises – which will be launched to the public at an open weekend on 22-23 October.

The company, which specialises in full vehicle builds and air-suspension conversations plus the supply and fit of top-end off-road and expedition equipment, says it aims to provide a welcoming showroom environment where customers can examine equipment before purchase.

Not embarassing at all

Words: Graham Scott mma Burton, who lives near Market Bosworth in Leicestershire, said ‘I think some people around here think police don’t take it seriously when they report that their Land Rover has been stripped.’

We’re sure you, or someone you know, has more than likely experienced a similar reaction.

But the police do seem to be on this one. A police spokeswoman reported:

‘We are investigating an incident of theft from a motor vehicle. The Land Rover Defender was parked in Shenton Lane, Market Bosworth.’ While that’s true, it’s not quite the whole story.

As the Leicester Mercury reports, Shenton Lane is actually where the police station is. The theft occurred right outside the police station. And the theft involved stealing all five doors and the bonnet from the official police Defender. The vehicle wasn’t even theirs, it was on loan from the

Sturgess Land Rover dealership.

So if you happen to be in the Market Bosworth area and you see a Defender sporting official police doors and bonnet, maybe let the police know. We’re guessing they’ll be trying to find out quite hard how this particular crime took place.

We’ve heard of increases in thefts of Defenders and Defender parts since production ceased at the beginning of this year, but surely this takes the biscuit. Oh, they left the biscuits.

Raising The Bar

W

e all like bars. Energy bars, bars where you can have a beer, and bars of light.

That last one is the one we’re focusing on here, although feel free to indulge in the first two while reading this.

Wilderness Lighting has come up with a Duplex 5 range of lights that really do let you see the light. The low-energy consumption LEDs are mounted in a double row with bar lengths going anywhere from 6” up to a whopping 50”. If you get one of the bars in the 10-20” range then they’re legal for use on your Landy when you’re on the road and on high beam.

That makes high beam rather more of a beam than it ever was.

The 20” one, for example, has 40 LEDs, arranged in two rows of 20, which is enough to produce 11,200 lumens of light. What does that mean in reality? That the high beam has now pushed visibility out to over a kilometre away.

You can attach the bars to the roll cage of a competition vehicle, above the windscreen, above the bumper, wherever. They’re pretty tough bars and can be hosed down safely with a pressure washer, so they’re water resistant and dustproof – handy in an off-road environment.

If you want you can have a twin-circuit fitted so you can have one row of white lights and one of amber lights, so you’re covered whether the way

ahead is clear, foggy or dusty. The kits come with all the fittings necessary, including a security nut kit to avoid what the company coyly calls ‘unauthorised removal’.

Sure, there are some parts of some cities where simply slowing down will mean you’ll suddenly grind to a halt with your wheels missing, but usually it’s the spare on the back of your Landy that is most at risk from tea leaves.

Are you a cigar smoker? Good for you. In which case you’ll be needing the cigar lighter in your Defender. But lots of people don’t wander around with big cheroots in their mouths, but they do manage to use the auxiliary power source for everything from satnavs to pumps. Then they lose the blanking plug.

Too much salt is bad for you We’re always being nagged about having too much salt in our diet – although have you ever tried eating salt & vinegar crisps without the salt? But there’s worse to come. Winter. And with it councils chucking rough salt all over the place with joyous abandon, usually not on the roads you use but just occasionally managing to spray your road and stationery Land Rover.

In Canada of course they have much more serious winters than we do, and consequently much more salt corrosion for their long winters.

Which is why they have a can of Salt Eliminator handy. It’s quite clever. If you have a salt-encrusted anything, from Landy to winter boots, you spray this stuff on and then wipe it off and the salt goes with it. Imagine how handy this would be for those salted rims and wheelarches.

It’s made by Krown which is worrying, since they can’t even spell, but having a can in the vehicle would definitely be handy. Another one in the home too. They’re Toying With You I hate to use the C-word, but it is about that time. Time for you to start planning ahead for what you’re going to get that favourite person in your life for, cringe, Christmas. So what are you going to get yourself?

How about a Series I from 1948?

True, you have to build it, and they reckon it will take between 40 and 60 hours, but then it only costs a bit over a grand. You’re so worth it.

If cross-examined you can always say you bought it and are engaged in a labour of love building it for your children. It actually looks pretty neat and is just so on the zeitgeist as it’s ahead of the factory itself.

How so? Well this is an e-Land Rover, powered solely by battery and electric motor. Not even JLR has managed that yet!

You can power it via one or two 12v electric motors and one battery.

Power then goes via chain drive to the rear and maximum speed is 4mph – apparently that’s the legal limit for one of these things in a public place. Might be worth seeing if you can strip out the electric powertrain from your mate’s Tesla and squeeze it in for a bit more go.

The Land Rover is big enough for an adult and, if you can’t get

away fast enough, it can also hold two five-year-olds, though why you’d want to have them on board is beyond me.

The basic construction is of wood and there are proper wheels and tyres, with a basic body weight of 31kg. You can get a basic kit for £1040 but that assumes that you’re providing the wooden panels (moisture resistant MDF) and doing some metalwork. However, as an

option you can buy a lot of it already done, and those bits don’t add too much to the cost.

If a Series I doesn’t float your dingy, how about a 1958 Series II? Same base, different bodywork.

Now you’ve got it home and had a good look in the cold light of day.

Okay. Right. Maybe, we think, if we tell our mates that we bought it really cheap as a project, that we wanted one to do up. No, we didn’t go for that nice one that was a real bargain in the end, we went for this sorry old clunker as we like a challenge.

Besides, we were feeling sorry for it.

All this of course means replacing parts. Now, we want to keep it reasonably economical and we don’t want to go chasing about talking to breakers, poring through classifieds or buying dodgy fake parts online that appear to be not aluminium but in fact painted cardboard.

Britpart might be a good place to start for all Series Defender stuff. So what do we need, now we’ve poked a screwdriver through the wing, pushed the clutch pedal to the floor, noted the exhaust held up with baling twine and now we’ve sat with our head in our hands for a bit?

Those dodgy wings can be replaced piece by piece, so you can get nose panels, wing tops and more all separately so you can replace the bits that need it rather than having to replace the lot.

And if you’re going to replace the clutch it makes sense to uprate the thing. The Britpart Clutch Kit contains an uprated plate and cover so that your clutch won’t slip like a greased pig, it will lock up nicely. Not that you know what a greased pig feels like of course.

But we can all imagine.

Importing a Land Rover from a warmer climate obviously has its benefits. But when you load up a boat from South Africa with two-door Classic Range Rovers, the advantages are even greater, as The Landy investigation shows

ange Rover Classics are classic vehicles in their own rights, and today more than ever enthusiasts around the world are restoring many of these remaining relics. These relics – although that term comes out a little derogatory, so perhaps we should go with vintage masterpieces instead – are getting increasingly sought after, especially the early two-door variants.

What is also becoming increasingly popular is the acquisition of imported Range Rovers, vehicles that have spent their working lives in warmer continental climates and are now looking for a retirement home in rainy old Britain. The poor machines.

We’ve seen many Italian numbers around and some Range Rovers find themselves travelling back from an extended vacation in Marbella. But the imports that have really caught our eye of late are those stepping off the boat having made the arduous journey from South Africa.

Yes, traversing the globe from the depths of Africa to one of the most

westerly points of Europe, these special vehicles are coming back to their homeland – and they’re being greeted with many open arms.

The advantages of importing a Range Rover Classic from South Africa are fairly obvious, but it’s worth highlighting them all the same. Like some of the other European imports, these Range Rovers have spent most of their lives in climates typically much dryer and warmer than what we have to put up with in the UK. It means corrosion to the vehicle is far less likely and, as a result, a 1975 Classic Rangey from South Africa is likely to have aged far better than an equivalent vehicle that has spent all its days having to fight off salt, mud and grime from the highways of Britain.

You could, of course, get a similarly conditioned example from elsewhere in Europe, but unlike these, the South African models are right-hand drive.

Now that is a clear pulling factor. Sure, you could always convert a left-hooker to a righty, but then that’s just another job you’ll have to find time for!

‘I’ve worked on five-yearold Defenders that have been much worse than these!’ returning home,’ expresses Darren.

‘There was a plant in Cape Town some years ago, though, so some of the ‘70s vehicles will have been built there.’

The Range Rovers that Simba 4x4 imports are sourced from areas such as Durban and Johannesburg – it’s not as muggy or as damp as here in the UK, and they’re more accustomed to a desert-like environment rather than the wetlands of rural Britain.

‘You don’t get the road salts over there, even after the rain. It just dries out so fast, whereas here in the UK it’ll rain and then stay damp for some time after,’ explains Darren. ‘The main issues that usually result stem from the

steel body frame. The doors, wings, chassis and crossmember can all be problem areas, but the majority of the South African Classics don’t have any rust anywhere!’

While Darren shows me around one of their latest examples, this one a 1979 edition finished in Arctic White and still running its original 3.5-litre V8 on carburettors, he reveals that another 1979 Rangey he was working on the week before was like new, with a body that looked like it had just rolled out of Solihull.

‘I’ve worked on five-year-old Defenders that have been much worse than these!’ laughs Darren.

We mentioned that the Range Rover we’ve photographed here is on carburettors, which is seemingly the era and particularly specification most enthusiasts are seeking at the moment.

It’s where the value is for those who are hoping to undertake a restoration project with one of these great machines.

Our pin-up Classic started on the button and the engine revved freely and happily along the West Midland lanes; the V8 singing effortlessly as the throaty harmonics bellowed in our wake. The fact it was a glorious summer’s day meant the Arctic White paintwork dazzled spectators – and so it should.

Some other South African distinguishing features include the side-rubbing protective strips down the side of the body which UK models didn’t possess. And because these vehicles were going to be spending time in Port Elizabeth rather than Port Vale, these southern specials were fitted with air conditioning, a nice addition to have in any Land Rover.

These Range Rover Classics age far better than our UK counterparts and, according to Darren, ‘They could save you hundreds of hours in welding, chassis repairs and metal work just to get the vehicle in a half-decent state.’

Buying a South African import gives you a much better starting platform should you want to take your Land Rover back to concours condition and allows you to focus on the mechanicals and exterior patina to finish off or maintain your vintage hero.

Range Rovers are great cars, but they’re even better when you find one from South Africa. They’re younger, fresher and have been graced with a more sympathetic life. Think of them as being like you, but a version of you of when you were ten years younger – a more energetic and fitter prospect.

Some examples of the type of condition these Range Rovers are in once they wind up at Simba 4x4. Lovely crisp edges and minimal rust. Exemplary

While you may not be able to get time back on your own body, you can buy a Range Rover Classic that certainly feels like it’s turned back the

clocks. And best of all, you’ll drive along feeling like it’s just another Range Rover that’s been here in Britain all along.

But, every so often, the whole workforce comes together, pushes the limits of what it can do and builds a vehicle that shows exactly what Arkonik thinks a Defender should be. Here, ladies and gents, is the result

D

efenders, like all Land Rovers this side of the millennium, have shifted their focus and become increasingly branded as premium motor vehicles. Our icon was obviously the one that dragged its heels the most over the matter, but even in its latter days of production (something that still sounds ridiculous to say) the Defender had a more upmarket appeal and attitude.

There’s a whole culture that has established itself on the back of the Defender being transformed into a more usable everyday vehicle and something

that plays up to being a status car more than a shed car.

Arkonik is one such company that has been a pioneer in the flamboyant Defender market. Bear with me on this one, but let’s compare it momentarily to the trainer. No, I don’t mean your personal trainer or anything related to bloody Pokemon. I am in fact talking about the shoe variant.

You see, some years ago trainers were just these practical items you could slip on your feet for when you fancied falling over trying to play tennis. They were available in white, white or…

hmm, I think it was white. Oh, and you could only ever wear them while on a tennis court or else you’d look like someone most definitely homeless.

The thing is, these days trainers have become more than just a tennis shoe.

They are a fashion garment, a casual everyday comfort shoe or they can be used for what they were really designed for and consequently blind the opposition sports team with how vibrant and dazzling your feet now look.

Defenders, my friends, are very similar. They have stepped away from their practical roots and now can be

utilised in every walk of life. As I said, Arkonik is a company that has seized the opportunity to run with this (pardon the phrasing).

For 98% of the time, this well-oiled team churns out bespoke customised Defenders for US customers that want a taste of the Green Oval lifestyle, but with modern-day luxury on the side.

The factory completes around six builds each month, and for the remaining 2% of the company’s production, the Land Rovers get dispersed far and wide, with clientele in Lebanon, Cyprus and elsewhere. This really is a global business.

But every so often, like a solar eclipse or another phenomenon to be relished, the whole team at Arkonik puts their heads together and builds something for themselves; a Defender built in their vision that showcases what they’re all about.

Here then, is the Arkon X2 – their second-generation icon that is a testament to the word craftsmanship. Let’s take a closer look.

is a Defender 90 Station Wagon blessed with a carburetted 3.5-litre V8 engine.

Arkonik do offer their Defenders with the 200Tdi engine now that the engine is over 25 years old. And you can imagine how many of the US customers have been eager to get a slice of the Tdi-powerplant after so many years.

Like waiting for Christmas, yet it only comes once every quarter of a century!

In terms of what completes a Defender, though, surely the V8 is the motor to have installed. A big, powerful – and lest we forget – an American-derived power unit that

adds the correct harmonics to your now thrilling driving experience.

Thomas Parry is the Sales Director at Arkonik, based in the rural heartlands of Somerset. He oversaw the sale of the Arkon X2 once it was ready to be released into the wild.

The team were able to try out new interior combinations and customising options and the result is one fantastic cabin. Alcantara, leather… hell there’s even a screen! and one that everyone wants. So it’s a 90, it’s V8-powered, it has the luxury, it has the fantastic paintwork. It’s the full bells and whistles job and it was an opportunity to do our own R&D on our own products.’

Understandably, it’s difficult to explain to the chap in Los Angeles that he has to wait another month for his Defender because you’ve been testing out some new ideas. With the Arkon X2, the team could afford trial and error.

As is quite clear, this is more of a ‘city slicker’, as Thomas phrases it, and one

that is better suited to everyday travels than rock climbing pastimes. Arkonik has built 150 vehicles in the last two years and, like the others before it, the Arkon X2 has been put through the same stringent levels of quality.

Each Defender is stripped down to the bare chassis, being shot-blasted and then dual-action sanded prior to being Waxoyled internally. This is followed by the application of two coats of Epoxy primer, three sprayed coats of Raptor for protection and an end result being a Defender that is in better con-

dition than any Defender was when it came out of Solihull.

Once the team has the right platform to work on, the mechanicals become the focal point. A new cellular dynamic suspension package is installed as standard which copes much better with the state of your average highway, whichever side of the pond you are.

One thing to be clear on is that virtually everything on these Defenders is new. It means the vehicle can leave Somerset in the safe knowledge that it’s been built to last and should be happy

The bearings and bushings are new, the safer collapsible steering column and package is new as are the brakes. These brakes are fearsome too, ‘over-engineered’ as Thomas claims and able to pull you up sharply even with a three-and-a-half ton trailer on the rear.

Axles are reconditioned, the transmission stripped and fully refurbished, while the engine is also completely de-robed, the block is then pressure tested, re-bored and all internals substituted for new components.

When it comes to the body and exterior the only thing you need to know is that the roof is just about the only part that’s carried over as a reconditioned item. The rest, as you know by now, is as fresh as a daisy. Wings, side panels, bonnet, hinges and doors, they’re all new – but with soundproofing on the doors for increased refinement.

The bulkhead plus the A, B and C pillars are traded in for new counterparts and internally lathered in Waxoyl for even further preservation.

The rest of the inside is just completely reworked. While the interior does resemble a Defender cabin, some of the properties used to lavish the cabin are from another world compared to the usual plastics and cloth of old.

For the X2, a one-off custom-engraved 15-inch steering wheel sits firmly in front of you, while a black alcantara headlining rushes over you. Elsewhere inside, there’s further alcantara, this time a flamed red combining with red stitching and black leather to create a wonderful place to sit. LEDs are utilised all-round to modernize the vehicle, with the continued red theme evidenced in the floor lighting.

and voiced opinions and bounced ideas off each other. There was never a definitive design and never a specific timeframe in which we had to finish,’ reveals Thomas.

In this case, the Defender was put through the process in about three months. Arkonik describe it as a piece of art, and in many ways it’s hard to disagree. The Arkon X2 is a handsome Defender and wears its new finish well.

It’s why so many of them have been transformed into upmarket machines.

But what sets the X2 apart from many other ‘pimped’ Landies is the quality and attention to detail. Anyone can pop a KBX grille on the front of a Defender, but with this vehicle it’s built to a spec that even Solihull engineers never envisioned.

It’s a fitting testament to what Arkonik can do – and what can happen when you have all departments pulling their weight and giving every last ounce of passion to the cause. The X2, then, is the lovechild of true Land Rover enthusiasts.

When you get one Land Rover into your life there is always a chance that one Landy will never be enough. There is one particular fellow out there who knows this all too well. It’s become a real serie-ous problem...

P

roviding you’re not someone who chooses to constantly live their life in a pair of flip-flops, you’re likely to own several pairs of socks. With socks, you can’t really ever have too many, apart from at Christmas.

It’s a similar story with Land Rovers.

Only, unlike socks, Land Rovers are not boring.

I’m sure many of you out there will be reading this in between the roll call for your various Land Rovers, confirming the exact number of Land Rovers you own every half an hour just to keep track of the huge fleet you’ve established over the years.

Funny isn’t it that the total number only ever seems to increase. I guess that’s partly down to these machines generally outliving the alternative metal boxes you can stupidly waste your money on out there.

Still, my point is that owning a Land Rover can lead to a serious problem – namely collecting them until you reach

the point where you have drained all the coolant and oil in the world, along with your own bank balance. But, hey, it’s fun while it lasts.

Peter Clarke was gifted a Td5 90 when he was 17 by his father and, realistically, it was only ever going to go one way after that.

‘My dad had a Land Rover from when he was younger, which is how I got into the whole thing,’ says Peter.

‘From an early age I wanted one.

When he gifted me the 90 it was kind of like my 17th and 21st birthday presents all in one.’

Boys and their toys is a common phrase that is used in these circumstances, but Land Rovers aren’t just toys. Quite quickly these thirsty, unreliable and boxy things will begin to completely rule your life. Bye-bye all other hobbies, I’ve got to dress up in my overalls and get a face full of lubricant. Exquisite.

Peter thought his Defender was pretty exquisite for a while, even

in bog-standard farm spec and its pick-up body. However, there came a point when a full tilt soft top had to be applied, along with a roll cage and the whole off-roading and big tyre stance.

Unfortunately, a need to relocate from Cornwall meant more motorway miles and, while tackling highways in a Land Rover is one thing, trying to travel at speed in a soft top Landy is not without its discomfort – and wind.

So the soft top was removed, although to be honest, it’s not like Peter is struggling for Green Oval options when he walks out onto his drive.

‘I got the passion for Land Rovers driving the 90 around the Supacat testing ground which I learnt to drive on,’ says Peter. ‘I’ve got a passion for the classics too, though. A couple of mates had Series Land Rovers and I fell in love with the charm of the machines.’

he knew it, Peter was the owner of a 1970 Series IIA Hard Top finished in Limestone. However, rather than treat the Series with the same grace as carried by the vehicle itself, Peter decided to take the Landy on a pay and play at Silverdale.

‘The chassis had snapped after the pay and play, but when I looked underneath I couldn’t see anything,’ claims Peter. ‘I carried on a bit further when suddenly I got this huge tank slapper and thought “What the…!” My mates looked at it and it turned out that some of the previous work had been the subject of a short cut or two.

Filler had been used to repair some of the chassis!’

Having escaped death and emerged undeterred by the experience, Peter turned his attention to the hole that had been left by the absence of a Soft Top Landy in his life.

‘I’d always wanted another Soft Top; I wanted to reverse what I had to do to the 90,’ Peter reveals to me. And as you can see for yourselves, Peter actually now has two soft-top Series Landies – on top of which, he jad sold a third just a couple of days before he showed us these beauties.

The one that was sold was a Series IIA, fitted with a 3.9-litre V8 from a Range Rover (Peter likes his V8s) and had been fitted with parabolic springs and a Salisbury rear axle. It was nice – but so are these pair.

Firstly, the creamy coloured Series III contains a 2.25 petrol unit that Peter has been slowly and sympathetically restoring for a while now – albeit with a few minor adjustments aimed at delivering more refinement while still keeping the utilitarian feel. In other words, Peter still likes to be able to feed a hose inside his truck and watch as the dirt disappears.

Take the Defender door seals and the tailgate that opens to the side – these little changes all help. There’s a Fairey overdrive too for longer journeys, offering better usability than yet

On the other side you have the blue Series IIA. Peter explains: ‘I bought this as it was in the spec I like - 3.5-litre V8 on carbs with 3.54 diffs. The gearbox is nice and quiet and this will cruise at 60-65mph no trouble at all.’

It’s the Series III that remains closer to Peter’s heart out of all the Land Rovers he owns, though – yes he has a 110 Double Cab that used to be his daily drive too. The Series III even had a role to play in his first date with his girlfriend. Perhaps it was the charm of them both that enticed.

In any case, Peter is in the position where, if his Landies were toys, he could probably open up his own shop!

In fact, he may just do that. ‘I may start looking at selling classic Land Rovers,’ states Peter.

They always say that if you can enjoy your work then it can well be the secret to happiness. But let’s not kid ourselves here – when you’ve got Land Rovers popping out from your ears, who isn’t going to be as happy as Larry? Or Peter.

T

here are all sorts of build projects going on out there in Britain. The sound of a wrench squeezing the last rotation on a nut, or the agony of a man who’s just clocked his head on the front bumper, these can all be heard echoing down the lanes of rural Britain as weird and wonderful creations come together

– all with a Green Oval still perched handsomely on the front grille of whatever follows behind.

Some of these inventions are put together on a shoestring – and a short one at that. The cheapest parts are located – often through the success of late-night bidding wars on eBay – in order to realise the architect’s dream,

while other projects become the focal point of some very large cheques, and produce worrying looks from your accountant who simply doesn’t understand this Land Rover malarkey!

Today, we bring you this fine-looking Land Rover. But it’s not a Land Rover like any other. From a distance this vehicle looks like a mirage of blinding

silver on the horizon, but step a bit closer and the form of a Defender starts to appear.

It’s a glittering truck which you appreciate more and more with each step closer you dare take. I say ‘dare’, because it can also be quite an intimidating thing. Most Defenders have a presence about them, but this

carries the sort of aura around it that’s on par with that of the US President.

Everyone kind of notices when they’re in the room.

Part of this comes down to what is written on the bonnet, while the rest of it comes down to what’s under the bonnet. We’ll start up-top, though, where you’ll find the lettering that

spells out Overfinch – a name to get the blood rushing through your veins if ever there was one. Straight away you know this isn’t going to be your average Land Rover.

And when you open the gleaming bonnet, those inclinations become

completely justified. Here lying deep in the engine bay is a 5.7-litre V8 borrowed straight from a raucous Chevrolet Corvette. It’s a ferocious thing and, quite frankly, when you fire up the huge motor and the Defender is facing straight towards you, the

need for a toilet quickly becomes a serious priority.

I say the word ‘Defender’, but in all honesty this is not one. That’s because this Land Rover comes in at a 100-inch wheelbase. It’s the amalgamation of two donor vehicles: one a Discovery

Overfinch and the other a 110. Naturally, there’s a whole load more bits and pieces that have been thrown in too, but those are the two underlying platforms that have been utilised.

It started with the Discovery which surrendered its running gear, includ-

ing the carburetted Corvette V8, the automatic gearbox, suspension system and axles, before all of it was pinned onto the 110 chassis. That was then shortened to the resulting 100 inches and the final showpiece is a vehicle Continued overleaf

that has received over £50,000-worth of work. Extensive is something that flies into the vocabulary when you look upon this machine.

The work was carried out by a retired ex-Overfinch engineer, so the creator knew what he was doing. And you can see why Alex Taylor was fascinated by this vehicle – and consequently why he became the owner.

‘The Swiss Army received a number of 100” prototypes in the late ‘70s. I read up on reviews about enthusiasts with 100” vehicles, and it sounded like the wheelbase gave you the best of both worlds between the 90 and 110,’ explains Alex.

‘It’s one of the factors that attracted me to this vehicle; the fact it’s quite a special vehicle because of that and I could tell the Land Rover had come from someone who’d spent a lot of years working on this type of vehicle.

‘On top of that it’s got some lovely features, like the panoramic glass, the custom leather interior, plus it’s got that fantastic engine.’

Alex reports that the engine has a great deal of torque, as you would expect, but even with all that power it’s not overwhelming. On the contrary, it’s actually a doddle to drive – a truth that is realised through the combination of the automatic ‘box being linked with

the big V8. ‘It’s a more refined way of driving what is essentially still an agricultural vehicle,’ smiles Alex.

He’s only owned it for five months, but Alex has made good use of it over the summer.

‘I haven’t towed with it or taken it off-road; it’s only been used on nicer days. It’s simply a car that puts a smile on your face when you drive it, with that burble coming from behind you it really is a pleasure vehicle,’ describes Alex, while patting the wings of his leashed monster.

name it – although his current company car, a Freelander 2, isn’t quite in the same league as this strange instrument.

This Defender, though, can really play some tunes, too.

‘I go through phases with my Land Rovers,’ reveals Alex, ‘If something catches my eye, I’ll get it and run that particular Land Rover for a bit before moving onto something else.’

What was a 1992 200Tdi Defender is now a unique fire-spitting leviathan, with power to amaze and a soundtrack to make grown men need nappies once again. It’s a reminder of what can be put together when you persevere and have the finances in place to complete your build. Of course, not everyone can fund a £50,000 project like this, but then not everyone will want a Land Rover like this either.

The Ruby in the Red

Getting out and exploring the world in your Land Rover is a very exciting prospect, but where do you start? There are so many possible destinations, and if you’re a virgin overlander it can be a little daunting.

Well, you could always follow in the footsteps – or tyre tracks – of this adventurous Landy

O

verlanding. Everyone wants a piece. You’ve got a Land Rover, you’ve got a passion for rough terrain, you’ve got a partner in your life crazy enough to pander to your cockamamie ideas and you’ve sold them the idea that travelling the world in a Land Rover is a sensible thing to do – because, you know, Shirley and Brian did it the other year, so if they can do it…

But while you may have got all the necessary parties on-board with the madness, now you have to decide in which country – or countries – you’re going to be parking your Land Rover in for the next few weeks or months.

There are so many possible destinations to investigate: Iceland is a classic, Portugal is becoming increasingly popular, while a grand tour around Europe is always an option and keeps you within the comfort blanket of civilisation.

But some of the grandest expeditions require the exploration of Africa.

Now, we’re not suggesting you pack up and attempt to conquer the entire continent on your first outing, you could just dip your toes in first – like Jenny Bright and Gavin Lowrie did with their Defender, Ruby the Landy.

If you head over to their website, www.rubythelandy.com, you’ll be greeted with a mantra that says the

following: ‘Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow, what a ride!”’

Should that not be indication enough about the type of mentality this trio share, then perhaps this story will clear things up for you.

Serial travellers Jenny and Gavin had been on numerous voyages both before and after they met. For Jenny, she had already been around the world once, back in 2005 and 2006. They have in more recent years summited Mount Kilimanjaro together; have travelled the

Tran-Siberian Railway and, with Ruby, they have explored parts of France, the Lakes and the Outer Hebrides.

Like something out of a film, the couple were hit with a wave of sudden realisation some years ago while out in Tanzania. As you do.

They were touring the Serengeti aboard a Defender, breathing in the freedom only a Land Rover can bring, while witnessing some of the finest mammals that walk this Earth. It was during this experience that Jenny and Gavin both decided that all their future excursions should be undertaken while at the wheel of a Defender. Naturally, when they touched back down in the UK, sourcing a Land Rover was the only priority.

A trip to Jake Wright’s in Yorkshire ended with the acquisition of the Land Rover you see before you today. Ruby is a 22-year-old Land Rover Defender 300Tdi County Station Wagon, and the perfect overlanding companion. This is something Jenny and Gavin know only too well. In fact, they’re currently in Peru with Ruby while I type these very words. But that’s for another time, so stay tuned over the next few months.

The pair now had Ruby in their lives and a list of places they wished

to tackle. Having been trekking to Morocco previously, Jenny and Gavin had already built up a rapport with the country. They had enjoyed the nation’s hospitality and culture, plus there were other reasons why Morocco would be the ideal starter trip.

They already knew they would partake in a round the world tour in Ruby after embarking on their Moroccan journey. As Jenny explains, ‘We decided to drive to Morocco for our test trip because it’s accessible from the UK if you’re planning a short trip – we had a month to spare, so decided to take the ferry to Santander and then drive though Spain.

‘Morocco has a very different culture to the UK, which also really appealed to us, yet it would still provide some level of challenge. It’s cheaper than Europe, too! And because we knew it was already a fairly well-trodden path with overlanders, having read blogs by other travellers who had been, it made sense for it to be Morocco.’

Keen to make sure that the three of them were prepared for any eventuality, Jenny and Gavin spent around three years readying Ruby for Morocco, although one eye was being kept on their current 2016 global expedition.

It was within this timeframe that they sampled her capabilities as an overlander while journeying to France and the Outer Hebrides. She performed exceptionally well, but don’t just think the couple fastened a few more storage nets in the cabin and ticked the ‘complete’ box. No, the preparation was more than just skin deep.

Ruby was taken to Footloose 4x4 in Peterborough where she would receive a new galvanised chassis, a new gearbox and radiator, plus a host of security upgrades like the roll cage, dog guard and external window guards. After all, when it’s your home, transport and best travelling companion all rolled into one, you need to make sure it’s got some level of security about it.

Storage is always going to be an issue while overlanding and it’s something you need to be smart about, but there are plenty of companies out there offering such services.

Jenny and Gavin gave Ruby a lightweight drawer system, suitable for four Gomo boxes and another platform for a further eight wolf boxes.

‘We had an additional fuel tank and water tank fitted underneath, giving

us about 50 litres extra for diesel and a further 45 litres of water. We had a marine water pump, and water filter and tap fitted, which meant we could fill up with any water and it would be drinkable straight away,’ explains Jenny, regarding surely one of the more ingenious and necessary additions to any Defender that’s overlanding.

All seats bar the front two were thrown out so as much space could be used as possible, meaning Ruby was able to accommodate the National Luna 60-litre fridge as well as a safe and small cubby box.

Ruby, named as you can imagine after her vibrant paintwork as oppose to it being Gavin’s favourite Kaiser Chiefs’ song, was all set for the first big challenge the trio would face. They say if you fail to prepare then be prepared to fail, but with this three-strong unit, they’d done everything right to avoid such a fate.

Jenny actually believes that the Morocco planning, aside from the car prepping, was fairly straightforward.

‘We used the Michelin Morocco map, which worked well for us, and chose the places we wanted to visit and worked out a rough route to incorporate them,’ recalls Gavin. So from Portsmouth to Santander, followed by a road trip through Spain, the final leap was into Morocco.

‘We decided to cross into Morocco at the port of Tanger Med as we had read it was easier than some of the other options available. The practice runs to the Lakes in Ruby meant we’d established an idea of how all our kit worked. We’d also put together a toolkit with some spares, just in case,’ states Gavin.

Once disembarked upon the Moroccan shore, Ruby’s occupants quickly started to remember why they’d chosen to make this their pre-world tour initiation exercise. The country isn’t just full of sand. No, it’s rich in culture, hospitality and a whole load of beauty spots that emphasise just how diverse this place can be.

From the moment Ruby’s wheels started turning on the North African tarmac, Jenny and Gavin felt at ease as they began to weave towards their preplanned places of interest. While out there they drove the Atlas Mountains; took in the picturesque coastal fishing village of Essaouira and hustled and bustled their way through the tight streets of Marrakech. Undoubtedly these were all very different experiences – as was the experience of visiting Erg Chebbi. If you can draw up an image of a mountain range whisked up by sand that stretches for as far as the eye can see, then you’ll get an idea of what this place is like. It highlights the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert and, as a vision, it’s something you’ll cherish well into your later years. It’s also an ideal place to build sand castles should you have kids.

Of course, Ruby loved her own time playing in the sand, and Jenny and Gavin fell in love with the freedom of waking up each day and being able to travel somewhere new; their eyes witnessing nothing but an artist’s masterpiece, their noses smelling nothing but gloriously exotic cuisines and their ears hearing nothing but peaceful serenades from Mother Nature – plus the background chatter of Land Rover’s magnificent 300Tdi. Bliss.

‘We loved living out of Ruby and driving her,’ beams Jenny. ‘And we’d definitely recommend Morocco as a destination to prepare for bigger trips.

We tested all our kit out, found out that we could live with each other in a roof tent and a Land Rover 24/7, while also adjusting to being self-sufficient in a country where you’re a stranger to the culture – and the language.

‘You have to be organised on these trips – which is where Gavin came in – and it does help to learn some basics of the language,’ says Jenny.

‘We also learnt the importance of having regular rest days and not being

on the road covering long distances all day every day. We covered 4,000 miles in a month and by the end it had really started to take its toll. We did book the one night in a hotel just to recuperate, which was great!’ declares Jenny.

However, throughout their trialling trip they had a choice of wild camping opportunities or sites that offered a more organised setup. It gave them the flexibility in when and where to test out Ruby as a vehicle to live in each day, as well as how she would cope as an off-roader.

They only had the one mechanical problem during their vacation too: a broken heater matrix which simply required the force of a hammer, and the application of some gaffer tape and jubilee clips to be rectified. Improvisation is something all these travellers pick up over time.

Looking back at their time in Morocco, the couple maintain that it was the ideal location to try their hand at serious overlanding.

‘In terms of doing anything differently, we would simply have taken our time a bit more and not done so many miles,’ confesses Jenny. ‘That’s it really.

We really loved it and once we got back to the UK, we started to seriously save for our big trip.’

Sometimes conforming to the majority can be seen as boring or, perhaps more apt for this case, unadventurous.

But Morocco is a place where many people get their first experience of overlanding because it offers such a great platform to build upon.

It provides the chance to indulge in a foreign culture, but ticks the boxes on the driving wish list, both in terms of terrain and scenery. And you don’t have to travel the other side of the world to be there either.

Morocco is a fantastic country, and in Ruby, Jenny and Gavin have found their overlanding soulmate. Safe and happy travels guys!

Tubeway Barmy If you want to turn your Land Rover into an off-road machine, starting off with roll protection is something you’ll never regret. Though if the people building it have to point out that the Land Rover in question is on the verge of disintegrating, you might wish you’d paid more attention before buying it…

hen you’re prepping a Land Rover for serious off-roading, where do you start? A decent set of tyres, maybe? Some nice suspension?

Proper recovery points? All of them necessary if you’ve going to explore (or extend) the limits of what your truck can do, but sooner or later you’re going to surpass those limits.

Most disciplines in off-road competition require at least some sort of rollover protection, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider a cage for those that don’t. Even simple green lane and playday duties will put a Landy within a few degrees of a big one before very long – and there’s nothing worse than knowing you’ve got to back out of trying something you think you can drive because you know you’re not prepared for the consequences if it turns out that you can’t.

Actually, there is something worse.

It’s called death.

There are many ways of protecting yourself from the effects of a roll. A simple piece of bent pipe bolted to your vehicle’s floor or pick-up bed, and maybe beefed up with a couple of braces, will be enough to save your life in the vast majority of rolls at typical off-road speeds. If you’re planning the sort of stuff that could see you going end-overend or barrelling several times down a hillside, on the other hand, a proper chassis-mounted affair is in order.

Which brings us back to the question of where you start when you’re planning an off-road vehicle build. What we’re looking at here is a 1987 Range Rover whose owner had run it for a while, let it go a bit and then decided to prep it for production-class comp safari racing. He wasn’t looking to race with the ALRC, so he tasked a professional cage specialist with the job of designing a six-point structure conforming to FIA regs that were in force at the time.

The idea of this story isn’t to give you a design to copy, though. It’s to look at

what went in to creating the cage – and, perhaps, to provide a cautionary tale for anyone else thinking about turning an old shed into a comp car.

The Rangey arrived at the workshop with varying amounts of air in its tyres and a driver’s door that wouldn’t open.

An excellent start.

So the guys there, Phil and Kevin, set about stripping out the soft furnishings in readiness to measure it up (pic 1).

And what did they find? Rust, that’s what. Along the sills, in the footwells, up the rear wheelarches. Turns out matey had let it go more than just a bit.

After a bit of discussion with their customer (who is always right, don’t forget), the guys had a plan. They’d repair the body where required and supply the cage dry-fitted, complete with spreader plates ready to be welded in ready for final installation.

The design of the cage itself used a main section mounting through the floor and on to the existing outriggers.

Ahead of this, the front hoop mounted on to three-way spreaders (pic 2), locating into the inside corners at the front of the sills and sandwiching the floor with the feet of the hoop itself (pic 3), while the braces at the back were planted firmly against the wheelarches – or rather, against repair plates where the remnants of the wheelarches used to be (pic 4). You can get an idea of this design from the main picture.

Having finalised the design, the next step in the job is to measure the vehicle.

So is the next step after that, actually – that old maxim, ‘measure twice, cut

once,’ was never more true, because cutting your steel to exactly the right length is critical.

This would be a whole lot easier if the lengths you’re dealing with were just going to remain the way they were after you’d cut them. But of course, they’re not – they’re going to get bent into shape, some are going to gain feet and others are going to be scalloped to joint with other parts of the cage. If you measure a particular pipe run at a certain length then cut your steel to fit, you’ll be left with a rather embarrassing shortfall if you haven’t allowed enough extra for the bends.

Similarly, note the way in which the diagonal and horizontal members join to the rear braces in the main picture – a C-shaped cut has to be hollowed out in the ends of these tubes to fit snugly over the curvature of the braces (picture 5), and this too has to be allowed for when you’re measuring and cutting.

The blade used for this job (pic 6) is lubricated to prevent excessive localised heat from building up – this could burn the steel, creating weak spots – exactly what you don’t want when its job is to save your life.

Anyway, once your tubes are down to length it’s time to start turning them into the component parts of a roll cage.

This means bending them, and once again the equipment you use to do this is critical to the strength of the results.

What this means is that the sort of benders you can pick up at your local hire shop are unlikely to be up to the job. They’ll bend tube alright, but they probably won’t do it without putting stresses into the bends themselves – in effect, pinching the inside of each bend Continued overleaf 7. and stretching the outside. Needless to say, even the best equipment won’t help you if you try and contort a piece of tube into an impossible shape, but assuming you’re trying to create the sort of smooth, gentle bends seen in pic 7, a proper hydraulic unit is very much in order.

Having been bent into shape, the various components going together to make up the cage were given dry runs to check them for fit. The compound sections were then welded up in situ, before the whole lot was removed for powder-coating prior to final fitting.

In picture 8, the main hoop is in place and the nearside front stay put in position ahead of it (along the ceiling and down the front of the door aperture). The main hoop had been positioned in the vehicle before even its own foot plates had been attached – only once it was located perfectly were these welded in place (pic 9) and the front stays offered up.

Now look at the position of the clamp brackets securing the front

stays to the main hoop (pic 10) – once welded up, these very much dictated the angle at which the stays were going to sit.

All well and good. But what about the front crossbar (pic 11), which runs between the front stays along the top of the windscreen? If the stays weren’t positioned with total accuracy when they were welded up, this would have been the point at which a well executed set of plans turned into a fiasco.

The moral of the story is that a dryrun is just that – a full-scale assembly of every component, not just a lick and a promise. Fail to ensure everything is in order at this stage, and you’ll regret it.

With the cage dry-fitted, Kevin identified exactly where it would connect with the Rangey’s floor. Picture 12 shows the holes in the footwell where the front stay was to be bolted through the feet shown back in picture 3.

Having come back from the powder coaters’, the sections were ready for final assembly inside the Range Rover.

Fitting the main section in place is

definitely a two-man job (pic 13), but once it’s there the front stays can be located within their clamp brackets and secured. Then the nearside stay gets tightened up – use the position of the steering wheel to help you get your bearings.

To complete the structure, a pair of additional bracing bars were run between the front and centre verticals, just above floor level. These can just be picked out in the main picture.

So, one nice new cage – in a Range Rover that was neither nice nor new.

The vehicle’s owner took it home to face the reality that he had engaged the pros to build a bespoke FIA-spec structure – and now he needed something solid to weld it to.

What’s the moral of the story?

Don’t be stupid – something which the Range Rover’s owner admitted he had been. Installing top-quality roll protection is the best start you can possibly give to an off-road project – apart from nor starting with a rot box in the first place.

T

hey grow up so fast, don’t they?

It seems like just yesterday that our new arrival was just that: new. However, since we last put pen to paper our 90 has been doing a lot of growing up. Thankfully our 90

hasn’t worn through its new Coopers already – that doesn’t happen with tyres this good – but they are now worn-in.

Yes, that’s right, our 2006 Td5 Defender has been running the Discoverer AT3 tyres for roughly a month now, and the early results are in. While, yes, it’s only been a month the initial signs look promising.

First things first, before you even put the literal wheels into motion, they look good. As you may recall, the 90 is actually the property of our advertising manager, Colin, and in his words ‘They look a lot nicer than standard [tyres]. I wasn’t sure about the distinctive white lettering beforehand but once they’re on they look really smart.’

It gets top marks from an aesthetic point of view then, but now on to where it really matters.

From behind the wheel there has been a vast improvement on the previous incumbents around the rims. However, that isn’t the greatest compliment given that the previous occupants of the alloys were the eleven-year-old originals!

One of the most noticeable differences from your standard set of tyres is in the noise; or lack thereof. The new AT3s are slightly wider than the originals and even while bearing this in mind, there are some impressive qualities showing through.

‘It’s a lot quieter than you’d have thought, especially considering they’re wider than usual,’ says Colin. On a recent test run round some of the local roads of South Derbyshire, the 90 sang its Td5 heart out with the turbo hissing at the late-summer sun. The tyres, though, stayed in the background – carrying out their job, without complaint.

And when we asked the tyres to come to the fore, they delivered.

‘They’ve been driven in all conditions so far – in the dry and the wet – and they’ve performed brilliantly; there’s so much grip!’ enthuses Colin. From this testimonial, so far, the Coopers have been a good pair of shoes. Tarmac is only half the story, however, so we will be taking the 90 off the blacktop in the near future to see whether it can do as the white lettering suggests!

Besides evaluating the new rubber, we’ve also had our eyes on the fuel gauge this month. Briefly, there are many fuel additives out there on the market and all claim to be the best

magical potion for your vehicle. So we thought we’d try one.

We’ve gone for Cataclean, or to be more precise, Cataclean Diesel. It’s a patented fuel and exhaust system cleaner that flushes out the build-up of carbon in your motor’s oxygen sensors and protects the catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter (DPF). Oh and it can reduce emissions by up to 60%, apparently.

But that’s why we’re here; to see whether these magic liquids work.

One reason we chose Cataclean, which was a real pull factor, was the fact that the RAC carry this on all of their 1400 mobile patrol vehicles. It would suggest, then, that there are some benefits to be reaped.

As instructed, we took the Defender down to a quarter of a tank, dropped a bottle of Cataclean Diesel into the fuel tank and ran it for a good 20 minutes.

It gives a chance for the additive to mix.

Thereafter you’re free to fuel normally.

One final thing that we will be looking for from this test is how it impacts, hopefully positively, on the vehicle in terms of performance. It is said to restore engine performance.

Realistically our ten-year-old Defender shouldn’t have lost too many horses in its short lifespan, but if we can regroup any of the escaped steeds, then we’ll take them.

e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on whether something is worth owning.

The Freelander 1 has been tarred with a bad rep, but is it really justified?

With examples ludicrously cheap and attainable from as low as £500, is this really a Land Rover you want? The price is right, but is the car? We’ve caught up with Ashley Counsell from Ashley 4x4 near Stafford to grab some words of wisdom on what can – if you’re not careful – be a treacherous pitfall…

‘Personally, the most important aspect of the vehicle to check, whether it be petrol or diesel, is the viscous coupling. It has a habit of seizing which

then puts a strain on other parts of the transmission – and if that goes it’s an expensive job to replace it,’ says Ashley.

Ashley cites the main cause of this being down to odd socks… Okay maybe they’re not ACTUAL socks, but they are the Land Rover equivalent.

If you have different sizes of tyres on your Freelander, or even a variety of different make of tyre then this can be enough to upset the coupling. Ideally you should have evenly worn tyres on your vehicle too. It’s a pricey job changing all four tyres at once – but it’s better than the alternative.

‘The main bugbear is that it can be difficult to check the state of the viscous coupling,’ continues Ashley.

‘However, if you can find a gravelly car park and turn the vehicle on full lock, listen for the inner-rear wheel skip-

ping. If it does, it can indicate tightness and a potential disaster waiting to blow up in your face.’

Another tip from Ashley is to check for the rear propshaft. And no, we’re not joking. In some cases people remove the rear prop in order to get twowheel drive and save on the coupling, but then you don’t really own a Land Rover and you just try insuring it! The Freelander 1 is not a vehicle that corrodes. Not like some Landies anyway.

But what about powerplants?

The 1.8 petrol is notorious for head gasket failures. We’d be surprised if there’s any originals left that haven’t blown up. Fortunately, however, it’s a problem that is becoming increasingly uncommon because today’s replacement gaskets are a lot more robust.

It still makes good sense to check the

oil when buying to see if there’s any contamination, though.

Our personal choice, and Ashley’s, would be a TD4. These are arguably the most reliable option you can go for, although watch out for the injectors. Start up from cold and check for any misfiring. Like the petrol head gaskets, they’re not cheap to replace.

Other than that, you do get a Land Rover. It’s cheap, fairly economical in the right guise, and actually not bad off-road. Just don’t expect too much of it. One final tip from Ashley: ‘Check as much as you can on any vehicle you buy, from the engine to the electric windows. It’ll give you an idea of how the car has been maintained.’

Series I (1948-1958)

I

f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

I

n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s

item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy.

The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985)

F

ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

P

ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion.

To mimic the civvy Series ma-

chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978)

O

nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Defender (1983-2016)

T

he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition, while if you’re in the market for a Defender from the 200Tdi era onwards, expect to pay a premium for them now that production has been halted.

However, many early Defenders are running Discovery Tdi power units with genuine Defender 200Tdi units not as common as they were.

The 300Tdi is slightly more refined, just as easy to work on, and there is also more of them about.

The Td5 is one of Land Rover’s most reliable units, while the TDCi Puma engines bring a touch more economy and torque to proceedings.

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)

T

he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

F

ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)

T

he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples.

A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery Sport (2015-present)

B

rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now somewhat more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make.

It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and feels a bit less like an expensive handbag.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

A

s a general rule, we’d tell you to avoid the Freelander 1 at all costs, simply because no single version is without its hindrances. Still, if you insist on investing in such a bottomless pit, then we can at least advise.

But while we can advise, we cannot tolerate you going anywhere near the 1.8 petrol. It’s a cow pat waiting to blow up in your face. Simple as.

The petrol V6 is pokey, but requires

much coolant. The 2.0Di engine is pretty miserable and gutless, hereby making the TD4 the only real option to go for that will let you keep your dignity in tact.

All the usual tips apply: make sure it has been regularly serviced and maintained to a high standard and you might end up with a very cheap route into Land Rover ownership. It’s not even that bad off-road...

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

M

ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

T

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s

in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors.

Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)

M

any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)

C

ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out

for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present)

I

f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

M

uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-present)

T

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling.

But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present)

W

hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job.

That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals.

Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?
