f you’re reading this, you’ll more than likely be aware that Land Rover was launched in 1948. The brand debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show that year, but since then the original launch demonstrator has spent numerous years, well, we’re not quite sure where.

But, last year it was found and taken under the wing of the Land Rover Classics department, and in the last year or so it has been given the love and care that was required to get it back to the correct specification – and importantly into full working order – having been lost until it was found in a garden near the Solihull factory just three years ago.

The team in Coventry worked from the original drawings, combining oldschool techniques with modern tech to get the prototype back to health.

Throughout the project, the team kept as much of the vehicle original and preserved as possible and X-rayed the rear axle casing to ensure that it was strong enough to be kept and used.

‘While there was a need to replace some parts, we were keen to keep as much of the original vehicle as possible in order to retain the unique characteristics of this 70-year-old model,’ explains Callum McKechnie, head of Land Rover Classic.

‘The team has done an incredible job and the end result is a testament to the unique expertise and tireless passion of the experts at our Classic Works facility.’

But, whilst the front axle only required light repair work, the x-ray of the rear axle showed that it wasn’t as simple – but it was able to be kept.

Original parts that were kept include the ‘Organ Stops’, or the through-the-

dash 4WD controls, if you rather. This system was reinstalled to accurately replicate the pre-production format.

Another feature of the very early test vehicles was their Lockheed brakes, whilst the production models all had Girling stoppers. At some point, the setup on the prototype had been changed to Girlings, so the technicians changed them back. Having looked at the era appropriate drawings they realised that they needed to engineer replacement parts – master and wheel cylinders, drums, pads and backplates were all on the menu, with brake pipes painstakingly fitted by hand to match the original routes.

You may have noticed from the images on this page that the paint doesn’t appear to have been tended to.

But you’d be wrong. The refurb always had the goal of retaining the patina of the early prototype, but with a few new panels needed, they had to match the patina. Minor repairs were enacted elsewhere to sort sharp edges and tears. The new 2mm aluminium panels

(accurate of pre-production models) were fully painted in a colour matched to the underside of the seat base, before being appropriately aged, as not to look incongruous next to the surviving original panels.

One of the biggest things missing from the Landy was, however, the Land Rover badge. This had to be forged from a digitised photo of the ’48 motor show stand, but they computed the design which was then used to cast an accurate replacement.

But, to get the prototype moving again, the engine had to be completely rebuilt. Correct spec high-compression pistons had to be made especially, whilst the Forestry Commission worked with the team to identify the exact type of wood used in sections of the front and rear seats.

Once finished, the vehicle took pride of place on the Land Rover Classic stand at the recent Goodwood Revival and is now in Coventry and part of the active vehicle collection at the Classic Works facility.

ights of way users in Suffolk have regained the use of an unsurfaced road in the village of Clopton, just north of Ipswich, after a lengthy legal battle by the Green Lane Association to have illegal width restrictions cleared from the route.

The road, called Church Lane, had been obstructed by a landowner using concrete blocks, which were set at a width which allowed access to horses and motorbikes but prevented 4x4s from gaining access. These appear to have been put in place during the summer of 2011 – they’re visible in Google Street View images from September of that year, but the same image taken that May show the lane entrance to be clear.

Initially, GLASS representatives reported the obstruction to the highway authority, Suffolk County Council, which approached the landowner. He refused to remove it, arguing that a 19th Century Ordnance Survey map of the area showed a width which, if scaled up, would only be sufficient to allow a horse and cart to pass.

while it accepted the route’s status as having vehicular rights, it was minded to agree a width of 1.72 metres – despite there being a much greater physical width between the lane’s hedges and boundaries.

With historical usage being pivotal in these cases, GLASS provided evidence to the highway authority that a typical Suffolk Farm wagon was wider than the landowner was claiming. It also obtained a statement from the Ordnance Survey confirming that it is not possible to determine the width of a road simply by scaling up from an old map.

Despite this, the obstructions remained in place. ‘The lack of a robust enforcement policy by Suffolk CC allowed the landowner to ignore the law,’ explained GLASS. ‘Although at one stage the concrete blocks were moved, they were still left in such a position as to form an unacceptable width restriction.’

Part of the problem here is that illegal obstructions are much easier to deal with on public rights of way (byways, in this case) than they are on unclassified county roads. GLASS explains: ‘Although the Highways Act 1981 places a statutory duty on the highway authority to protect and assert the rights of all users (S130), the procedure for enforcing the removal of an obstruction is less straightforward if the road is a UCR rather than a Byway Open to All Traffic. From the same act, S150 gives the right for a user to apply to a Magistrates Court for an order requiring the highway authority to remove an obstruction from a byway (or any right of way), but this procedure doesn’t apply to public roads which aren’t on the Definitive Map as rights of way.’

GLASS instructed a solicitor to write to the authority requesting that they arrange for the obstruction to be removed, but even then little action was taken and the restriction remained in place. The association therefore followed up by taking counsel’s advice and its solicitor prepared to take enforcement action in the High Court, using the procedure for a judicial review.

This would involve a judge being asked to review the legality of the highway authority’s decision to allow the obstruction to remain. However, a further solicitor’s letter informing the highway authority of this next move, accompanied by a freedom of information request for evidential information, appeared to convince those responsible that GLASS was serious in its defence of its members’ rights, and the obstructions were removed without the need for High Court action.

Everyone knows about the new Defender by now. How could you not?

But less likely to be on your radar is the 2,573-piece Lego Technic version.

Yes, Lego do make toys. But this is a big boy’s toy if ever there was one.

‘How so?’ you may well be asking.

Well, would a toy for children have a trio of functioning differentials?

Would it have Lego’s most advanced gearbox yet, with high and low-range, plus selectable four-wheel drive? How about independent suspension on both axles? Would it have a winch? Okay, it probably would have a winch, but you get the point. It’s a damn advanced kit.

The rims are an authentic design, and the overall model is a convincing replica – especially considering the medium. Under the bonnet, it also has a six-pot engine with pistons that fire, the tailgate is opened by twisting the rear-mounted spare wheel and the interior is surprisingly detailed, too. The steering wheel works, in the sense that it turns the wheels, whilst there is also storage both on the roof and hung down from the roof rack.

It is a challenging build, though, given the amount of parts involved, but Lego say it is suitable for those aged eleven years and above. Well, we for one wouldn’t mind helping a younger Land Rover aficionado out on this one.

Early Learning Classics Toylander are a company that make ultra-realistic, electric sit-on Land Rovers for fans up to a certain age.

They’re nothing particularly new. This one here, for example, was made in 2012, with two 24-volt batteries for its power, drive and reverse gears and complete with a handbrake. It can reach speeds of 5mph, too. Which, we all know, are speeds that can be very, very fun.

What makes this particular Toylander, on sale with H&H Classics, so special is what it is towing. The caravan, which was only forged a year ago, is highly impressive to say the least.

Within there is 1250mm of headroom and abundant facilities. The versatile space houses a play kitchen, bench seats and a table that folds down to form a bed. Plus, as you’ve surely noticed, it is painted in original Land Rover colours.

H&H Classics are the ones who found this wonderful bit of kit, which went on sale on 16 October at the Imperial War Museum, in Duxford.

Can I have a word...

W

hen it comes to Land Rovers, one of my favourite attributes I feel they possess is their ability to encourage adventure.

It doesn’t matter what type of Land Rover you own, but when you do have a Green Oval positioned somewhere on your car, the possibilities are that bit more diverse.

More doors are open, more destinations are on the horizon and now in the 21st Century there’s even more Land Rovers to choose from than ever.

Traditionally, if you were going to head off to Africa, or if you decided a couple of decades ago that you’d like to delve into the depths of Asia, you would most likely have taken a Series Land Rover or more recently a Defender to carry out your vehicular needs.

But over the years, people have turned to Discoverys and even Range Rovers to be their travel companions, although for a while people were still sceptical about some of Solihull’s newer machines on the block.

The likes of the Discovery 3, for example, or L322 Range Rover – these offer immense everyday comfort, but you wouldn’t necessarily have them down as world-beaters.

However, just as travel has advanced by air and sea, overlanding is also becoming more comfortable.

The Ardventures Discovery 4 in this issue proves you can now traverse the world in comfort, with the required equipment and prep available for even the newest of Land Rovers.

Why not have your cake and eat it?

I would. And personally, the thought of gliding down the Pan-American Highway or through the Moroccan Sahara in a Disco 4 is, quite frankly, sublime.

Tim Gibson wonders how the new Defender would be viewed if it didn’t have a green oval on its grille Words: Tim Gibson BREAKING NEWS: an accomplished SUV maker has launched a rugged 4x4 vehicle designed to appeal to farmers, builders and off-road enthusiasts.

The car manufacturer has previously been renowned for creating premium vehicles that combine off-road prowess with comfort, elegance and class.

It also has a reputation for making doughty commercial vehicles that are practical and hardwearing.

The new vehicle draws on the car maker’s expertise in deploying cutting-edge technology to create vehicles capable of surmounting even the most challenging terrain. Unlike

other utility 4x4s, the car offers a high degree of comfort, with the flexibility of commercial-spec variants and a choice of seat configurations to accommodate between three and seven occupants.

The car is expected to retail from around £40,000, but slow depreciation makes the option of Business and Personal Contract Hire potentially cost-effective. Given the deployment of technology on the new off-roader, many motor industry insiders suggest a three-year ownership cycle may be sensible – a pattern that many utility users are already accustomed to via business leases.

Imagine if the above text had been written in an off-road magazine such

as our sister publication 4x4. Imagine if the manufacturer of this dream vehicle was anyone other than Land Rover. SsangYong, say, or Isuzu. Maybe Mercedes Benz or Volkswagen.

I reckon the majority of us Landy fans would be feeling pretty excited by the prospect of this new vehicle. It’s a bit like how I felt when I heard about the Toyota Land Cruiser Utility, or even the Mercedes X-Class pick-up. Cars that are rugged and reliable, capable of delivering the readies in the rough stuff, but also set up for the road bashing in between.

So here’s the point: if the new Defender didn’t have to bear the weight of both a green oval on its grille and the name of a legend, how would we feel about it? Would its launch have prompted an online outpouring of disappointed fan vitriol? Or would we have thought, collectively, ‘Cor, this sounds like a good motor. In the absence of a Defender, it may be worth a closer look!’

It is my hunch that many of us would have fallen into the latter category.

Take the original Defender out of the equation and all we want is an off-road

vehicle that feels pleasingly robust, ready for work, without sacrificing too much in the way of driveability.

So there you have it: my take on the new Defender. I don’t love it. Not in the way I love a good old-fashioned Ninety, at any rate. But I suspect it will still be my favourite vehicle in Land Rover’s model line-up, by a reasonably long chalk.

And in the absence of another manufacturer launching anything better, it may well end up being my favourite new car, period. Even if it does look like a KIA Soul.

or years, the overlanding scene has been dominated by a select few culprits capable of carrying out the duties of globetrotting. If you hear someone say they’re off to travel the world via the means of four-wheeled transportation, there’s a strong chance they are referring to a Defender.

But as the original Defenders – i.e. all the ones built up until the beginning of 2016 – grow ever older, people are looking to preserve and restore these once adventure-seeking relics, because of their potential worth as investments for years still to come.

It’s a shame, if you ask me, but their elevated prices and traditional methods of crossing terrain and countries have given rise to a new generation of overlanding vehicles.

And it is something one tour operator is most definitely aware of. Chances are, if you’ve been on an organised overland excursion or even looked into booking one of these tempting treks, you will have come across Russ Dykes, one of the veteran overlanding specialists in the 4x4 community.

His company, Ardventures, is set up to offer tours right on our doorstep, with treks to some of the UK’s most scenic and technically challenging destinations,

Russ has also encountered, driven and owned most 4x4 vehicles you can possibly name, but one look at the current Ardventures fleet and you’ll notice a very fresh-faced member.

‘I wanted a Land Rover vehicle that bridges the gap between old and new Land Rover products, which the Discovery 4 Commercial does perfectly,’ explains Russ. ‘It’s probably the last true Land Rover designed vehicle from the old school. It is also very capable and only really struggles with its weight and a system that does not cope with soft sand and marshland.’

While some people can be quick to belittle the capabilities of newer Land Rovers, those of us who have used them – and used them properly¬ – will know that with a bit of patience, these machines can make off-roading look like a luxury pastime.

A further testament to their abilities is just how little Russ has changed on his D4 in preparation for it leading the line.

The chief reason for this is that sometimes people can perceive overlanding and off-roading as requiring vast modifications and huge expenditure.

But Russ likes to stress to customers that by simply owning a Land Rover

and having a decent set of tyres fitted, you’re more than halfway there already.

Even so, to make sure the D4 is prepared for all eventualities, one company was called upon for assistance.

‘ProSpeed are just down the road from us and I have known Ollie for many years as we both come from the world of rallying,’ shares Russ. ‘But the main reason for using ProSpeed is that we are getting more and more Disco 4s on the treks and the product of choice is ProSpeed.

‘On my way through Germany the other week, the tree sliders saved the vehicle when I was pushed into the concrete barrier on the autobahn.’

Besides the tree sliders, the Ardventures D4 has got the usual roof rack and ladder installed, while the front has a very neat A-bar and winch setup, along with Lazer Lamps spotlights and protection lining the underside of the car.

‘In the Balkans I came across seven Discovery 3s and 4s touring around, all kitted out for the job, and you also see quite a few in Morocco,’ continues Russ. ‘I think in the UK we have this Defender thing in our heads, when the Europeans just want a vehicle to do

the job well, with comfort, speed, room, refinement… all of it.

‘We are seeing increasing amounts of D4 and 5s, but also Range Rover and Rover Sports coming out on treks, which I think is helped by us having 19” and 20” wheels available to hire out with all-terrain tyres fitted.’

As a Commercial, the Ardventures D4 is perfect for Russ, offering vast space for equipment both in the cargo area but also under the floor.

Russ adds, ‘Being a tour company lead vehicle, we carry tools, spare fuel, water, mechanical spares, an ARB hydraulic jack, sometimes extra wheels and tyres, and it swallows it all up. And the air suspension keeps it all level, even with a James Baroud EVO tent up top and the Warn winch out front.’

Just this year alone the Ardventures D4 has completed treks to Galicia, Morocco, the Balkans, Portugal, Pyrenees and two coast-to-coast tours of the UK. And don’t worry, if any of these destinations seems like old ground to you, Russ is always looking at new places to offer professionally run tours.

‘We’ve been looking at the Scottish North Coast 500, which I know is a

road trek, but we have had lots of customers expressing that they want to take everything in and leave the lunch stops, hotels and points of interest to us – which is very much what the Balkans trek is and that remains extremely popular.’

Wherever you decide to travel with Ardventures, just remember that it’s the 21st Century and overlanding doesn’t mean you have to forego comfort and refinement. Anything your old Land Rover can do, the new generation can do just as well. If not even better…

The ‘Wolf’ Land Rovers of the late Nineties were designed to endure more than the regular Rover rabble, but were still bound by military regulations. When a Wolf is decommissioned from service, though, these Land Rovers no longer have to play by the same rules…

M

ilitary Land Rovers have traditionally been forced to survive with engines that perform reliably first and stir the soul a distant second.

Of course, this is perfect logical sense as I suspect most servicemen and women favour the evasion of oncoming bullets than facing the prospect of calling in the RAC to a hotly contested battlefield.

This is why the Armed Forces preferred the ‘12J’ for so many years. The

old 2.5-litre naturally aspirated diesel was never going to win you over with its harmonics, or blow you away with its turn of speed, but at least its ‘bulletproof’ reliability ensured you were not a sitting duck.

The 12J valiantly surpassed its sellby date, even being preferred ahead of the 200Tdi unit of the early Nineties.

But when the ‘Wolf’ Defender XD (Extra Heavy Duty) came along, Land Rover and the military had to move with the times and call upon the 300Tdi engine.

It may have been a step forward over the 2.5 NA lump, but this was still a case of function over form; an engine with a dependable temperament and a willingness to cooperate with a bush mechanic if required.

However, contrary to popular belief, the highways and byways of Britain are far from active battlegrounds, which means when you do see a roaming Wolf, it’ll have been decommissioned and therefore freed from its shackles of military life. Take a look at the one that turned up at Overland & Highway in Shropshire, for example.

‘This particular vehicle is essentially a “civilianised” Wolf, built by our friends at Salop 4x4 and Tornado Systems for the previous owner,’ explains Overland & Highway owner, Peter Clarke.

Not only has this Wolf comfortably integrated itself back into normal society, but this is also an XD clearly focused on having fun in its retirement from service. Perhaps the most noticeable change from its days of service Left: 300Tdi power made way for a 4.0-litre V8, while Tornado Systems has tweaked the Sagem ECU

is what generates movement to those BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres.

‘The previous owner decided he wanted more power than the original 300Tdi could offer, so a 4.0L V8 from an ex-Police Range Rover was sourced and installed onto the Santana LT85 transmission, which is more than able to cope with the power,’ continues Peter. ‘The Sagem (GEMS) engine management system was adapted and tuned by Tornado Systems to work correctly in the Defender, plus a new

high-pressure fuel system including pump, swirl pot and injectors were fitted for extra power.’

Bumbling down your favourite green lane, or taking your Wolf for a wander on a Sunday afternoon is far more enjoyable when you’re not at risk of encountering rebel fighters – which also means that should the new and sumptuous V8 soundtrack develop into a spluttering offence on the ears, you don’t need to worry about being carted off at gunpoint.

Peter smiles, ‘Jumping into the driver’s seat and pulling away, you’re immediately hit with the power and torque available under foot as well as the awesome V8 soundtrack!’

But this ‘civilianised’ Wolf is more than just a V8 conversion. For starters, this XD has ditched the uniform and traditional military green in favour of the plain clothes Coniston Green. The military-spec rollover protection system remains but is covered by the PVC soft-top hood.

A few other niceties include the new stainless steel exhaust system, the black modular steel wheels and NAS step on the rear, plus there’s now a mesh grille on the front and a swingaway later Wolf-spec wheel carrier on the back.

‘Many of the parts on the donor vehicle used for the build were unusable, so a brand new Td5-spec chassis was used along with a replacement bulkhead from another military Defender, forming a corrosion-free frame to build upon,’ describes Peter.

It may have begun to express itself more freely since leaving the Armed Forces, but this Wolf still carries some of its military clues. Inside, you’ll find a row of vinyl seats, more than capable of shrugging off a hose down, while the dashboard carries the centre-mounted military lighting switch and map light.

‘Ideal for those covert trips to the shops…’ laughs Peter.

We can all appreciate the aesthetics and pedigree of an unmolested XD Defender. And part of its charm is seeing one of these great soldiers still wearing their uniform today.

But sometimes it’s refreshing to see these troops become what they want to be. Expressing their personalities and revelling in the chance to enjoy their lives, not just as ex-service machines, but as ordinary life-loving Land Rovers.

‘So I thought, “What would be the next best thing?” and decided on collecting P38s’ With prices of early Range Rover Classics still holding their value high above the reach of mortal budgets, what should a Range Rover enthusiast turn to if they still have an urge to collect such Words and Pictures: Mike Trott machines?

W

e’ve all been there. No, I’m not talking about when you wake up in the morning after the night before and need to check back through 728 messages in your WhatsApp group to reveal the extent of your crimes.

What I’m referring to is the Range Rover Classic and the fact that each and every one of us will have stood, stared and yearned for one at some point in our lives. How can you not like such a machine?

They epitomise automotive luxury, and with the Classic being so understated and unostentatious compared with the 21st Century successors, there’s

something about the Mk1 Range Rover that very quickly gets you onside.

Early ones in particular are very charming – especially models with the vinyl seats and still work-friendly interiors. But to buy one in good condition today would place you in a very exclusive club.

It’s exclusive because you need to have rather a lot of money and when pristine examples are being sold as far north as £100k, it’s not long before you have to consider illegal methods of obtaining the required finances.

Paul Atkinson, who owns the Range Rover specialist firm Atkinson Bespoke Engineering, is just like me and you.

He too has found the Classic Range Rovers to possess astronomically high price tags, so to quash the urge for collecting these most luxurious of Green Oval machines, Paul has turned to his Plan B. ‘I always wanted a ‘YVB’ two-door Range Rover, but they cost too much money these days. So I thought, “What would be the next best thing?” and decided on collecting P38s and the various editions. And the 30th is the first of my collecting spree,’ reveals Paul.

Specifically, Paul’s Range Rover is a 30th Anniversary limited edition version of the P38, with just 100 being made for the UK market during the

year 2000. The model was produced to pay homage to 30 years of the brand’s luxury trendsetter, and all models were lavishly equipped and a joy to behold.

‘They were all finished in the same colour and trim,’ explains Paul, ‘but where the difference lies is that 50 of those 100 came with the picnic tables and the built-in TV screens. Mine is one of the 50 to have both.’

The bodywork was finished in Wimbledon Green and was actually one of the colours extracted from the 1996 Autobiography options, while the interior was equally as delightful with its green leather upholstery and liberal use of burr wood veneer. On the rear, the discreet 30th Anniversary badging is highlighted in a pearl effect to signify the 30 years of Range Rover.

It used to belong to the chap at a nearby garage and he kept it for a bit after asking me what he should get out of all the Range Rovers,’ recalls Paul.

‘I told him, “If you’re going to get one, you may as well make it a limited edition one.” I used to walk past it nearly every weekend, and eventually I took it off his hands.’

When the P38 came to Paul, although in a generally tidy condition, there were a few issues that needed addressing. The steering wheel was badly damaged, and typically the headlining had gone, so Paul put in some hours and sorted out the issues one by one, finishing with a thorough service.

‘It runs beautifully, even with 144,000 miles on the clock, and you wouldn’t question anyone if they said it had done half that distance,’ continues Paul. ‘It’s living proof that it doesn’t matter how many miles it’s done, if you look after your vehicles they can still run as sweet as the first day they were made.’

It may not be the coveted early twodoor Range Rover, but the Mk2 Range Rover is the only version other than the Classic to be designed and engineered in the 20th Century.

It’s very much a part of the oldschool Green Oval gang and in this fabulous 30th Anniversary spec, few would argue there have been many better Range Rovers ever produced.

Few companies have conquered the Land Rover restoration business better than Arkonik. And with their latest effort, the Drogo, this firm has clearly mastered the winning formula for this game

here’s an outside chance that you may have heard of a thing called Game of Thrones. If you possess a TV, or ears, it’s been quite hard to avoid over the last decade or so.

And now here it is rearing its ugly head in the until-now sacred pages of this here magazine. The culprits are the people at Arkonik, the Somerset-based restorer of left-hand drive Defenders, whose high-end refurbishments continue to find an eager market on the far side of the Atlantic.

For reasons we don’t understand, nor do we really need to, the 110 you see here was named the Drogo. After Khal Drogo, fearsome Dothraki warlord and serial rodgerer of Daenerys Targaryen (you know, her, who everyone named their daughters after but then she turned

out to be a genocidal psychopath). And there endeth the history lesson.

The real history says that this 110 started off, as they so often do, in southern Europe. It was brought back to the company’s base in Frome and turned into the top-notch expedition wagon you see here, complete with Coniston Green paintwork and 18” alloy wheels.

Yes, 18”. You won’t ever need to look far before you come across someone who thinks Defenders only look right with more sidewall and less rim, but the Kahn Defend 1983 black alloys are certainly in keeping with the chequer plating along the 110’s lower body. The tyres wrapped around them are BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2s, which says a great deal about the vehicle’s intent.

Underneath, the 110 rides on Terrafirma +2” suspension, and the same

company is responsible for its uprated steering damper. Not that you can see it, because there’s a brushed alloy guard in the way.

Further handy off-road kit includes a Safari snorkel with full wading kit, Optimill wing-top air intakes, a NAS rear step with 2” square hitch receiver and a Warn Zeon 12-S winch. Arkonik’s

own A-bar protects the front, where there’s a KBX Signature grille and steel headlight guards.

The headlights themselves are Trucklite Twin-Cat LEDs, and they’re by no means the only source of eyeball-burning brightness on board the 110 Drogo. Baja Designs’ LED spotlights are mounted on the A-bar, there are five slimline driving lamps mounted to the roof rack and at the back there’s an LED work light. Also at the back the tail lights are encased in plastic guards and a Front Runner ladder gives access to the same company’s Slimline II roof rack.

Inside, the vehicle follows the normal rule – where there’s an Arkonik, there’s a Ruskin interior. And that’s never anything less than a very good thing.

The Leicester company has trimmed all nine seats, as well as the cubby lid and gear gaiters, in Chestnut Brown leather – which, combined with black carpeting, an Evander 15” wood-rimmed steering wheel and alloy gear knobs and door furniture, creates a beautifully comfortable cabin ambience. There’s a sunroof, too, for when it’s warm, and the front seats are heated for when it’s the other thing.

Finishing things off inside is a Pioneer multimedia system with a touch-screen display. This runs Apple CarPlay, making iPhone pairing as easy as just plugging it in, and also operates as a reversing camera.

Arkonik, which builds its Land Rovers individually to customer order, says the Drogo 110 is destined to ‘cross the sea to conquer the rocky mountain trails and canyon lands of western USA.’ It should certainly last a lot longer than the Khal of Khals after whom it’s named, assuming of course it doesn’t end up being struck down by a witch’s curse. Though we doubt even that would be able to stop this Land Rover in its tracks…

Still breaking new ground

M

ud-terrains come and mud-terrains go, but for almost four decades BFGoodrich has been the name behind THE Mud-Terrain. Earlier this year the company launched its new Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 – the third-generation version of a tyre which has become a ‘Hoover’ brand in the world of off-roading.

With the arrival of the KM3, BFG says it has ‘introduced technologies that further improve climbing, traction and toughness in the mud and over rock.’ The company promises a five percent improvement in traction on soft ground compared to the old KM2, thanks to ‘mud-phobic’ bars on the tyre’s shoulders which aid self-cleaning by ejecting compacted material.

They’re aided in this by the tyre’s ‘Terrain-Attack’ tread pattern, whose large blocks are designed to grip on to hard ground, or bite into softer surfaces, whatever the angle of approach. BFG says the tyre’s compound makes it eight percent more effective than the KM2 over rocks, with a ‘Linear Flex Zone’ designed to wrap around hard surfaces when running at low pressures.

Performance over muddy and rocky surfaces alike is aided by notches in the tyre’s shoulders, which flow down into a ‘Traction-Armor Sidewall Sculpture’ whose reinforced structure helps

prevent damage to the most vulnerable part of the carcass.

The sidewalls themselves are now an astonishing 27% tougher than the previous model’s, thanks to BFG’s CoreGard Max technology – as used on its Baja T/A KR3 desert-racing tyres – which helps prevent splitting or puncturing, with increased thickness to protect the ‘critical sidewall failure zone.’

BFGoodrich says the KM3 ‘was designed to conquer the toughest off-road challenges with extreme sidewall protection, pinch shock resistance and chip-and-tear resistance on gravel.’ But just as importantly, it also offers ‘solid street performance and acceptable on-road noise levels for the drives to and from the trail.’

‘The KM3 tyre is designed for extreme toughness and traction and is essential equipment for serious offroad enthusiasts,’ says BFG general manager Harold Phillips. ‘Whether simply driving for off-road fun, or the extreme capability to access outdoor

activities, this tyre was made to take drivers anywhere they want to go.’

The KM3 is currently in the middle of a phased launch which will ultimately see a total of 42 sizes available, 21 of them new, by January 2019.

ead into deepest Wales and if you look hard enough, you’ll find a place that provides the ideal oasis for a Welsh laning vacation.

Llanerchindda Farm is a serene bed and breakfast, perched upon the Carmarthenshire hillside, and has become a popular spot for Land Rover fans seeking green lane adventures in Mid Wales.

Run by Martin and Lynne Hadley, with the help of sons Mark and Andrew, the Hadley’s successfully ran a hotel in the Lake District prior to their transition into Wales, and their welcoming hospitality is plain to see – and taste!

Staying for a night or two should give you ample opportunity to sample Lynne and Mark’s culinary expertise. The other half of the team are Martin and Andrew, who together oversee the front of house and as with all of the Hadleys, aim to make your stay as memorable as possible.

On the laning front, annotated maps,

sat-navs or even a local to guide you on your way, are readily available throughout your visit. The Hadleys know their stuff as well, being avid supporters of GLASS and Treadlightly.

With an abundance of local lanes enough to keep you coming back again, it’s good to know Llanerchindda have plenty of accommodation options for when you finally have to stop for the day. One of the favoured choices should be the on-site cottage which is perfect for anyone planning a group green laning holiday to the area.

Soar y Mynydd and Strata Florida are just a couple of byway delights to be found in the area, however, on a second visit you can dabble in the dozens of less-trodden trails that accompany the stunning countryside.

Ultimately, this is what everyone is looking for from their green laning adventures – a unique experience with memories to treasure for a long, long time. And few places do it better than at Llanerchindda Farm.

Getting ready for the journey of a lifetime is no two-minute process. You can have all the right gear, but if your vehicle is not up to scratch, you and your fancy tent won’t be going anywhere. Take it from the expert and learn how best to ready your Land Rover for adventure

I

t’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Good advice, except when it comes to overlanding, where excess weight is the perennial destroyer and to be avoided at (almost) all costs.

So what should you bring along on the expedition and what should you leave at home? How do you ensure that you are adequately equipped with the right tools and spares, without stressing your suspension and driveline to breaking point?

The answer is to compromise, but firstly – and more importantly – you

need to follow the wise old adage that prevention is better than cure. And by following this philosophy it’s also a cheaper way to travel, not to mention a lot safer.

Therefore, the single most important thing that you can do to prepare your vehicle for an overland expedition is to ensure that it undergoes a complete and thorough service and inspection, from an experienced and reputable professional who understands what your vehicle will be required to do.

What follows is something of a risk assessment, which aims to anticipate

and overcome potential problems you could face, and which could serve as a useful checklist to help avoid the nemesis of a breakdown: 1. All vehicles have weaknesses, some more than others. Research the ‘known faults’ for your particular vehicle and rectify them after evaluating various experts’ recommendations.

2. The comprehensive service referred to previously must include all filters (air, oil and fuel) and all associated oils (engine, gearbox, transfer case, differentials) in addition to the usual consumables that may need replacing.

Your service must also incorporate a professional underbody inspection, especially of the transmission, drivetrain, axles, wheels and brakes, but also other components including the steering, suspension and exhaust.

Inspections should also take into account associated bushes, mounts and joints etc.

4. The engine bay needs to be given a thorough evaluation, too.

Checks should be made to assess the condition of components such as the water pump, radiator, alternator and starter motor, but also the manifold, belts, hoses and battery mounts, whilst considering all associated wiring and connectors in addition to the above.

5. If your vehicle possesses an automatic gearbox, you must change the ATF in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification. Or alternatively replace it with Castrol Transynd. Those who have ignored this in the past have found themselves losing all drive, as their torque converter ceases functioning in the presence of overheated, degraded, under-viscous ATF. 6. Fitting good quality mud-terrain or all-terrain tyres is essential and these

need to be in a suitable condition with plenty of life left in them. Retreads are not advised and overlanders should carry a pressure gauge for airing down and a portable compressor for airing up. Low profile road-biased tyres are not suitable, while it would be sensible to fit smaller rims with taller tyres.

7. Underbody protection is unnecessary and adds significant weight, putting increased strain on the transmission and drivetrain. It also hides the areas you need to inspect each day, so keep things to a minimum, maybe with just a steering guard at most.

8. Carry basic spare parts and fluids as appropriate for your particular make of vehicle, plus the following: hoses, jubilee clips, baling wire, large cable ties, fuses, bulbs, belts, duct tape, WD40, nuts and bolts, tyre valves and the like. In other words, lightweight and versatile items.

9. Carry a reasonable selection of your most commonly used tools.

Remember – weight is the enemy, keep it minimal. If travelling with friends, discuss in advance and share the load.

At the end of each day, inspect the vehicle engine bay, the undercarriage and the condition of the tyre sidewalls.

Spotting a problem early makes it much easier, and inevitably cheaper, to rectify.

It’s good practice to blow out the air filter after dusty conditions, and check oil and water levels at the same time.

Also give the belts a tweak to ensure that they are sitting firm, but never overtighten them.

Inspect the undercarriage and the ground under the vehicle every morning to check for any leaked oil, water or fluids. Needing to regularly top up the radiator is not good and could be a cracked head.

Finally, do not over-prepare your vehicle. Again, weight is a killer and not just in terms of your fuel consumption, but increased strain on the whole driveline and transmission. Do not tamper with factory-fitted systems either, you do so at your peril and may find yourself opening a most unwanted can of worms.

Follow these steps prior to departure and it means you’re much more likely to have an adventure to remember, but crucially for all the right reasons.

Step Up

aking changes to your Land Rover is par for the course.

There isn’t a Rover across the land that hasn’t been given a mod or two, whether it be for performance, off-road capability or a tasty restomod on a classic Green Oval.

But often you’ll find the most effective changes to be those that everyone makes; the changes that make logical sense and day-to-day situations easier.

Think cubby boxes in old Defenders or remapping your Td5 Discovery. And then what about side steps and tree sliders? Not only do they protect your

But how hard is it to fit such items to the likes of a three-yearold Range Rover Sport?

1. In order to fit the side steps, there is a long stretch of trim that needs to be taken off beforehand 2. Pop open the fasteners running along the skirts 3. There are also 10mm bolts and nuts holding the skirt in place, these need to be removed as well 4. Take note of where the recess points appear along the trim, as these will illustrate the location for the step brackets

5. Ensure all bolts and fastenings have been removed before trying to eject the trim, as you’ll need it for later on 6. Our side steps, along with most offerings on the market, came with two sizeable brackets with bolts 7. Locate the correct holes for the brackets, which should see either bracket positioned towards either wheel 8. Don’t tighten the bolts fully and offer the step up to the bracket to check positioning is correct

13. Firstly, relocate the bolts and tighten up on the trim 14. This is a fiddly process to refit the trim alongside the step, but can be done, and should fit nicely behind the step 15. The trim has to fit over a lip that keeps it in position and allows for the fasteners to be relocated 16. Once the trim is lined up, start to return the wall plug-style fasteners

D

iscoverys have been around for thirty years now and that means the first of the breed are starting to become valuable items once more.

Soon the days of picking up a tidy D1 for under £2k will be over and every

man and his dog will be demanding silly bucks for their questionable shed.

Beat the rabble and find yourself a future classic now.

The D1’s body was always as robust as tin foil, so you’ll do well to find one that hasn’t succumbed to the tin worm.

But examples are out there and if you can grab an early Disco in particular – one with three doors and an original 200Tdi – you could well be looking at a machine that will appreciate very nicely over the coming years. At least if you keep it in good condition...

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then if you can source all the bits you need and come up with a finished example, it could well fetch mega bucks.

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 60-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as an investment and collector’s item.

A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and rather noisy.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top

of the bulkhead – we’re not sure it’s the full five stars on the latest Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance

that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub.

To mimic the civvy Series machines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover own-

£7000-£75000 Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

£3500-£35000 The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the hood, but also underneath the body.

£3000-£25000 more durable five-bearing crank rather than the three-bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

£3500-£18000 ership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle.

It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

They’re a rare breed, so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of.

Versions: 80” (‘48-’53), 86” (‘54-’56), 107” Pick Up (‘54-’56), 107” SW (‘54’58). 88”, 109” Pick Up (‘56-’58). 1.6 4cyl petrol (‘48-‘52), 2.0 4cyl petrol (‘52- ‘58).

Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80”s Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘58-’71), 2.0 4cyl diesel (‘58-’61), 2.25 4cyl diesel (‘61-’71), 2.6 6cyl petrol (‘67-’71 (109” only).

Pros: As a resto it’s a sound investment, some examples now MOT exempt, more desireable than SIII Cons: Bulkheads can rot with ease, check suspension leaves for seizing

Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol, 2.25 4cyl diesel. 2.6 6cyl petrol produced until 1980. Stage One V8 used detuned version of the 3.5 V8 (‘79-‘85).

Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership, still has the Series pedigree, parts still widely available Cons: Not as desireable as earlier Series models Versions: 88”. IIA (‘68-’72), III (‘72-’84).

2.25 4cyl petrol engine.

Pros: Not like all other Series Land Rovers out there, military background, uses lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Styling isn’t to everyone’s taste, can be pricey owing to their exclusivity over regular models

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted and it takes real commitment to stick with one.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit

of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition, because they’re starting to be a real

collector’s item. However, you’ll likely be searching far and wide for that pristine example.

This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were

Defender Tdi (1990-1998) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel.

If you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine.

Replacing blown units with a Disco

200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got.

After the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability.

Properly maintained, they can last for decades. Look around for one with

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done

properly before you take the plunge and purchase.

Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces.

The rear of the chassis has frequent-

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years.

Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its

days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders.

The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there for obscene money. If you like paying

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles.

With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

£8000-£35000 If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101 Forward Control. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

£5000-£13000 still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 NA version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

£4000-£22000 full service history and you could find yourself a keeper.

Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after.

If you can find one, you’ll have a workhorse set for life.

£6000-£30000 ly been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences.

With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces. Bar the Tdi, the Td5 is up there with the best.

£10000-£80000 thousands of pounds for some bucket seats and additional leather, then go ahead. You will pay a premium for a Puma, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£400-£5000 The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first.

Buy a Freelander 1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes. It just might not have the credibility of other Green Ovals...

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers.

But while you should turn your nose up at the Freelander 1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the

Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there... generally.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they

can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors and even untidy examples are starting to demand reasonable values.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good

working order, it’s still a sensational car to own, even today.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further than the current Range Rover.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although

owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013) Much of the first-generation Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s Sport uses the same foundations as the L405.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and at-

tempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then

£2500-£21000 Do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

£5000-£60000 Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

£1500-£11000 and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not).

Or you could try and find a limited edition anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

£3000-£30000 Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic and any issues you’re like to encounter will require deep pockets. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

£27000-£200000 alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with either a link to the royal family or the drugs trade. If you fit into some of these categories, then we envy you.

£4000-£30000 you need to love it for itself, because a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

Perhaps the only issue with the Sport – and it’s a big one – is that is shares all the problems the D3 experiences.

Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96).

Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon?

Cons: Electrics. Nuff said Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).

Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).

Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07-’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12).

Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper RR

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. But no one can knock the performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-2019) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses.

And given that the Evoque was, and still is, their fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner.

They don’t much like the Victoria Beckham connection, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route.

Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because

vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality.

The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands.

It’s a vehicle designed to fill the gap between the smaller Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport. It’s a competent cruiser and has received numerous

accolades because of its particularly handsome exterior.

The Velar is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace, but has greater off-road ability than the aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Land Rover Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. And the Solihull outfit succeeded.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement

and a driving experience more suitable to families, including seating for seven, but all without a steep Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it

does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly before purchasing.

You can also buy a V8, but the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body,

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8

petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the

Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched a couple of years ago, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the utilitarian Land Rover into new territory.

Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, along with

introducing new engines, they’ve taken one huge step towards doing so.

Having driven the latest Discovery, we can confirm that it has lost none of its versatility and is comfortably the most capable Land Rover currently on sale today.

All of the engines have great flex-

Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a

Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the next-generation Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval.

£38000-£85000 combine good economy with usable everyday performance.

The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course.

Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...

£1500-£12000 all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

£1500-£8000 especially towards the back end. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have been dipped into the sea. However, not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks, too.

£3500-£40000 timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

Rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too.

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

£34000-£80000 ibility and, along with its increasingly upmarket – and Range Rover-esque – interior, the new Disco 5 is one of the best machines to cover long distances in, whether that’s on the road or not.

Like most new Land Rovers, it’s easy to overspend on the options, but a well-specced Sd4 is all you really need.

£15000-£50000 It’s a more usable vehicle than the Range Rover Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the baby Range Rover.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech model and you could find yourself with a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

Versions: D180 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D240 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D300 3.0-litre 6cyl turbo-diesel, P250 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P300 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P380 3.0-litre 6cyl petrol.

Pros: Very stylish, interior, choice of engines, driven verdict soon...

Cons: Could hurt the bigger Sport and L405. Prices stretch to near £100K Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98).

Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.

Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks standard for ‘03 onwards (model dependent) Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake
