T

he Range Rover Velar has turned heads and won awards for being achingly pretty. But that’s changed a little bit with the introduction of the new SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, that comes with five-litres of V8 beneath the sleek bonnet.

That big supercharged heart beats out 542bhp and propels the Velar from stationary to sixty in 4.3 seconds and will reach its terminal velocity at 170mph. To cope with the uncouth power, the Velar has been equipped with uprated brakes and suspension, alongside bespoke calibration for everything from the powertrain to the

safety systems, to marry up the injection of the performance with the smooth and cosseting ride synonymous with the Range Rover nameplate. There is also a transmission tunnel undertray to improve aerodynamics of the vehicle.

As a project brought to fruition by the JLR SVO team, there are several visual clues that distinguish the SVA from its siblings – just in case the V8 soundtrack gets missed. These include a revised front bumper with bigger air intakes to cool the braking system along with feeding the engine. A new grille and lower side mouldings add distinction to the Velar and the rear bumper has been revised to accommodate the rather sizeable quad exhaust pipes. On that topic, the custom sports exhaust system is 7.1kg lighter than the standard pipes.

At each corner of the SVA you’ll find lightweight 21-inch alloys, with those at the front paired with 395mm brake discs and the rears a mm larger. The

calipers are four-piston variants at the front and sliding calipers at the rear, all of which are painted red.

Interior enhancements have also been bestowed upon the SVA, but Land Rover has stopped short of placing centre tape on the steering wheel and fitting carbon fibre bucket seats.

Twin-stitched quilted Windsor leather adorns the seating – which in the front is 20-way adjustable and both heated and cooled – a textile unique to this model. The colour options for the leather are Ebony, Cirrus, Vintage Tan and Pimento. Oh, they also have massage functionality as standard.

Drivers will steer the vessel with a unique sports steering wheel, which has a contoured rim and aluminium shift paddles. An optional carbon fibre pack will add sporty snippets of the lightweight material.

Available in six exterior colours (Firenze Red, Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Fuji White, Indus Silver and, by special order, Satin Byron Blue), all of which come with a contrasting black roof as standard.

The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition Velar costs from £86,120 on the road in the UK – and will only be on sale for a single year.

A

team comprising some of the best known names from the golden era of off-road rallying have teamed up to create the Four Seasons challenge – a series of charity events designed specifically for the Land Rover Freelander.

If you were around during the mid-90s, when the original Welsh Hillrally grew to attract entry lists into

the hundreds and went on to spawn the Southern and Scottish Hillrallies as well as Y Rali Bryn Cymru, names like Mick Gillett, Mark Allard, Richard Hopkins and Chris Ratter will stir fond memories. And along with fellow enthusiasts Selwyn Kendrick and Edward Bowen-Jones, they’ve got together to offer something genuinely new for people whose vehicles might not normally be thought of as off-road machines.

Most of the team are have strong experience in running fundraising events,

having committed a significant amount of their time to volunteering for various cancer charities during the course of the past two decades. In 2018, indeed, Selwyn Kendrick won a regional Macmillan Sir Hugh Dundas Award, which recognises volunteers who go above and beyond to make an outstanding contribution to the charity’s fundraising.

Each of the weekend-long events will include an auto test, a treasure hunt and a comp safari. There’ll be four of them in 2019 – two in mid-Wales, one in south-east England and another in southern Scotland.

The team says each event will offer a great venue and a fantastic opportunity for Freelander drivers to test their skills and experience across a variety

of disciplines and in all sorts of driving conditions. ‘First and foremost, says Selwyn, ‘we will be creating an environment where everyone is welcome and where there is a great opportunity to learn skills such as vehicle control, driving techniques, navigation and teamwork. Added to this is the fun element, as well as a little bit of competitive spirit that guarantees a memorable weekend.’

Derbyshire Police ask for laners’ help

V

isitors to the Derbyshire countryside, including recreational 4x4 drivers, have been asked to join a Countryside Watch initiative launched by the local police force’s Rural Crime Team. Announced late last year, the scheme is ’an educational campaign that aims to shine a light on the crimes that very often go unseen, unreported, uninvestigated and undetected.’

Derbyshire, in particular the part of the county within the Peak District, is visited by around 12 million people every year. ’With little by way of natural surveillance,’ says Rural Crime Team leader Sergeant James Shirley, ‘it’s not surprising crime can go unseen and with thousands of square miles, unfortunately despite our best efforts police cannot be everywhere at all times. The aim of Countryside Watch is to employ those 12 million eyes and more, and hone them in on what to look for.

‘These groups visit the countryside in all weathers, day and night, and will greatly increase that natural surveillance that’s required to help us protect our rural communities and the wildlife we are privileged to have here.’

Priorities for the Rural Crime Team include theft of farm machinery, plant and vehicles, livestock offences such as attacks, theft and worrying, fuel theft, equine crime and industrial fly tipping. In terms of wildlife crime, the priorities are badger persecution, from baiting to sett destruction, the disturbance or destruction of bat roosts, poaching and, of particular interest in Derbyshire, raptor persecution.

‘Rural crime costs the economy millions of pounds every year, not only jeopardising business survival but undermining the confidence and feelings of safety of those who make their home in the countryside,’ said Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa. ‘In order to cut rural crime, the police need information. To encourage people to get involved, we must raise awareness of problems and encourage people to report their suspicions.’

The force lists recreational vehicle drivers as one of the groups who it hopes will provide extra eyes and ears when visiting the countryside. If you see people acting suspiciously while out laning – whether in Derbyshire or anywhere else – call 101 and do your bit to help the communities you’re visiting.

Can I have a word...

O

ne of the most charming vehicles I’ve had the pleasure of photographing and writing about in recent times is the L4P Fire Appliance featured on the front cover.

Not only is it an extremely rare piece of machinery (just four were made), but there is that added appeal with it having spent most of its life operating as a service vehicle.

Its stature, too, is admirable as it tries to mimic the bigger forward control vehicles we normally see. There’s no question it is a fine Land Rover, and one that Adrian Thompson – the L4P’s guardian, if you like – has every right to flaunt at various shows around the UK. For Adrian, it’s the perfect tool to attract people so that he can talk to them about the bigger picture – the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade, which is the only one of its kind left in the country.

The brigade carries out its duties selflessly and is an establishment that is rich in heritage, even more so than the L4P in fact.

I like the idea that even though the L4P has stopped battling blazes, it still strives to do what it can for the brigade today. And there are more vehicles that should be let out and exhibited.

Many of the Land Rovers we now possess are historical vehicles, with many having lived colourful lives.

I’ve no doubt many of you attend the various Land Rover shows already, but I encourage you to visit other events in your area, preferably whilst exhibiting your Land Rover.

Not only could your Land Rover get some coos from the crowd, but you may well just remind people that it’s worth protecting the past, as well as the future.

hether you’re a Land Rover nut or simply fancy a family day out, the Spring Adventure at Driffield Showground caters for all this 25 and 26 May. The infamous Flatdog twist-off ramp returns, giving participants the opportunity to show just how off-road-ready your Land Rover’s suspension is – any Land Rover or Range Rover can take part, from Series I to Evoque, be it standard or modified.

Various Land Rover clubs will also take to the arena and parade their vehicles, plus share a bit about what makes them special. They will then return to the club stands where visitors can then reconvene and fire away any more questions they may have.

Outside the arena there’s more than a plethora of industry stands exhibiting, giving you the opportunity to look at products you may only have seen in the magazines or online and get first-hand advice from the experts about what’s right for you and your Land Rover.

The autojumble area is the place to hunt those elusive parts you’ve needed for what seems like forever, and is the ideal place to find what you need to keep your Landy running or perhaps even finish that special project.

For families, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained with mini Land Rovers, inflatable slides, rock climbing walls and extreme rides. Plus, when they attend with a paying adult, children under five can enter the showground for free.

For those who stay the whole weekend there will be evening entertainment to enjoy before heading back to the well-equipped campsite. Thousands of visitors made the most of the excellent facilities last year and this year is no exception with visitors scrambling to secure their plots at Spring Adventure Revival. in varying degrees, with some opting to go on the retina offensive with a bold new colourway, whilst others opt for some subtler distinguishing features.

How many things are more annoying than awkwardly holding a torch in your mouth and not quite highlighting the part of the engine bay next to what you’re actually working on? Few, villainous things.

But fret not, you’ll only have the most heinous of irritations to contend with once you welcome the Ring RIL83 Rechargeable LED Lamp into your employ.

The compact design is practical, versatile and packs a pleasant amount of punch for a device smaller than a Toblerone.

Featuring a magnetic base with articulation allowing 270 degrees of illumination from the 200-lumen lamp or a more precise spotlight from the tri-LED torch. You can rest easy that the new lights are up to task, as each unit is IP67 E-marked and is SAE approved, too.

If you’re planning a trip out into the wilderness, you and your Land Rover need to remain self-sufficient. If we’re talking purely solar power, then the integrated MPPT solar regulator can churn out 375W of maximum power, although it should be noted that the regulator can support solar panels of a higher output. You can also connect up solar panels with a maximum voltage of 42V if you so wish.

Don’t worry about your battery type, either. Whether you have a lead-acid battery or you’re running lithium-ion, the converter (codenamed NLDC-25) is complete with a six-stage charging algorithm, alongside a three-stage safety analysis function, which can determine if a battery has suffered any damage or is ill-equipped to receive charging.

Another useful feature is the temperature compensation. Seeing as you’ll be using your 4x4 in a variety of conditions, the output voltage is optimised to the current surroundings, meaning you should never be caught short.

The NLDC-25 is waterproof and protects against over-voltage and over-current, but over-temperature and reverse polarity, too. A monitor displays information regarding the system and the current status of your setup, and everything you need to set up the NLDC-25 and know about its operation is included in the box when purchased.

ire departments are a necessity in every town and city, but they don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Exactly the same can be said of the vehicles that fight alongside the brave men and women, tackling blazes hot enough to liquefy solid metal in the name of saving lives left, right and centre.

Their efforts are extremely commendable, but imagine putting yourself in the line of fire (pardon the pun) purely as a volunteer? The Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade is a self-explanatory non-profit that was set up in 1884 when some of the city businessmen got together having decided that they were unimpressed with the services currently on offer.

Well, the resulting taskforce must have done something right because it’s the only volunteer brigade left in the UK to have a contract with a county council in order to provide fire services.

Over the years, the brigade has seen many personnel come and go, but we’re going to focus on two individuals in particular – one a man and the other a machine.

‘I joined the brigade in Peterborough back in 1983, working my way up to leading firefighter before leaving in 1998 as an honorary member,’ explains Adrian Thompson. Now he just turns up and drinks the beer at their social gatherings. His words, not mine.

However, there’s another character that has become part of the furniture down at the station on Bourges Boule-

Only four L4P Forward Control vehicles were ever made. In a nutshell, this is an 88” Forward Control which was built by Alfred Miles Limited after a subcontract was negotiated with Land Rover. Using 1960 Series II running gear as the base, this 2.25-litre petrol-powered Forward Control has a custom-built cab comprising of aircraft grade materials.

It was first registered on 4 July 1963, by which time Alfred Miles Ltd. had sold its fire division on to Dennis, situated in Guildford, and that’s why you’ll see the Dennis M Series badging around this vehicle – the ‘M’ standing for Miles.

‘There were four L4P machines built in total, one being a prototype fire appliance; another a drop-sided truck and the final two were fire appliances,’ reveals Adrian. ‘This is one of the fire appliances, but while there was another built to the same spec, there are slight differences. This has a one-ladder gantry, for example, rather than two.’

This L4P started out with Baker Perkins after being purchased in 1963 and spent almost 30 years working on the brigade at their factory in Westfield Road, Peterborough. It was only in 1992 when Baker Perkins moved to a new location that the L4P was donated to the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade and retired from active service.

‘From that point onwards it became a museum piece,’ rues Adrian. ‘It stays here permanently now. We used to

But that doesn’t mean to say that it has no more duties left to fulfil…

At shows, Adrian confesses that the L4P is a bit of a magnet for attention – and let’s face it, you can’t say it isn’t a likeable little thing.

‘It may be an L4P officially, but my family refer to it as “Vera”. It’s a grandma name and you can imagine a Vera being small and sweet,’ chuckles Adrian.

People may like Vera for being petite and sweet, but it also gives Adrian an opportunity to speak with people about the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade. There’s a plaque outside the station with the brigade’s motto, ‘Ready and Willing’, adorning the brickwork.

The brigade is exactly that, and remember that this is a registered charity that goes out and answers 999 calls like any conventional brigade.

‘The thing I want to emphasise to people is the importance of the brigade; to raise awareness. It’s frustrating, because even people in Peterborough don’t know about us.’

Vera’s new role, then, is to help Adrian at the shows and send out a message loud and clear: that the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade is here and they are ready and willing to serve the city of Peterborough.

I

n many ways, it’s good that the Defender didn’t change much throughout its life. However, drive one every day or for a long stint and its rudimentary charms can soon wear thin.

At Ministry of Defender, they’re well aware of this, and that’s why they turned an old service 90 into the Fusion.

‘It is an early model, from 1988,’ shares Jonathan, who started the company and also owns the Fusion. ‘It used to belong to the Manchester Metropolitan Police. It was in good shape, but I had the idea of turning it into what a new Defender would be like. I loved the idea of taking something old and making it relevant to the modern world.’

By that, he didn’t mean he wanted to make a new car, rather make the car he had better suit everyday modern life.

The 90 has a 200Tdi, axles and gearbox

from a Discovery and he’s also replaced the 2.5-inch suspension lift with stock suspension. The wheels have also changed, from modular steel units to these gloss black five-spoke alloys.

An NAS rear step has been fettled to fit the M.O.D. showpiece, and there are two sports seats up front and another two elevated in the back. Behind them you’ll find a couple of old military cartridge boxes being neatly utilised as toolboxes – it is still a Land Rover.

‘I ordered in fibreglass arch extensions and a front bumper,’ says Jonathan. ‘We customised them ourselves here, making them more unique.’

You can see that the front end of the Defender isn’t too far from what they looked like straight out of Solihull, but the layout of the lights and the integration of a different grille into the bumper

are contemporised. The wings, too, have been adapted with vents added into the design.

‘It was tricky with a few things; adding the wider arches, the fuel cap was a bit awkward. There aren’t too many parts designed for the older Defenders, so we had to measure it up and cut the hole for the fuel tank on the side.’

Somewhere else where there seemed to be a shortage of options for Defenders of this sort of age was the interior.

Jonathan found endless options for exterior parts, but very little that would revolutionise the interior.

‘Where do you spend most of your time with a car? You’re inside it. It’s here that I wanted to change the most.’

So, from very early on in the Ministry of Defender story, there was already the seed for another business venture.

Jonathan began designing a new dashboard for the Defender, specifically that was more like the updated ones in the Puma 110s and 90s.

‘There was plenty of difficulty when developing the dashboards,’ recalls Jonathan. ‘It was very much trial and error. Plenty of days we just put it down, walked away and came back with a fresh head the morning after. The hardest part was ignoring how the genuine piece fitted, and coming up with the solution that worked.’

But eventually a design was finalised, and Puma Design was born. Cleverly, the mould is versatile and can be optimised for right- or left-hand drive

– which is important as the dashboards have gone down very well in America and the Middle East.

Here in Blighty, and in Jonathan’s 90, it’s cut out for right-hand drive. The bright orange finish matches the trim on both the seating and steering wheel, while the doors are lined with a snow

camo motif. The centre console plays home to a multimedia system that drags the Defender into the 21st century and is flanked by two switches you’d be forgiven for thinking control the windows.

But no, in this case they electronically open the ventilation hatches below the windscreen to freshen the cabin.

‘I know the interior isn’t to everybody’s taste, but I like it and it’s mainly designed to showcase what we can do if people want us to.

‘It gets a lot of glances,’ chuckles Jonathan. ‘People who know Land Rovers come over and ask what’s been done to it, and what the fusion lettering means.’

With the Fusion serving as both a daily driver and a rolling advert for the work of Ministry of Defender, and the Puma Design side of things going strong overseas you could forgive Jonathan for resting on his laurels and accepting he’s onto a good thing. But like many Land Rover owners, he just can’t help himself.

‘We’ve just finished developing a system that combines heating and air-conditioning into one box, with one set of controls to fit with our other products.’

So, even as the project progresses, and not knowing where it will go next, it’s safe to say that the Fusion has successfully fulfilled its mission objective and will continue to report for duty.

The First of Many

When Land Rover decided to go upmarket in the 1960s, their answer was the Range Rover – and this is the very first pre-production model built

I

n the late 1960s, Land Rover realised that it may need to make more than just robust farm hacks to ensure the future of the company. They’d struck lucky with how much of a success the original Series I turned out to be, considering it was only ever supposed to be a stopgap to generate some cash.

But with a changing society that was seeing more and more people move away from the traditional primary sector

The ‘Velar’ pre-production No. 1 model you see here, though, is the first Range Rover built to resemble the finished article. And you know its number one because its chassis number reads as follows: 35500001A. Vehicles for the home market in UK spec began with the aforementioned

Today, the Range Rover is one of Land Rover’s longest-serving models, even being a staple of the Green Oval family for longer than the iconic Defender, and it is just about one of the most luxurious vehicles you can buy on the market. But it started 50 years ago with this…

A further 20 Range Rovers were assembled to be used as press vehicles, carrying numbers 35500026A through to 45A, while the first Range Rover to be given full production status was handed the chassis number 35500046A. Back to the pre-production 001 car, though, and naturally you’d expect this machine to have been a coveted artefact over the years. So it’s not surprising to find that the car is currently under the stewardship of the Dunsfold Collection.

Being as the vehicle is understandably considered more historically significant than some of the other Land Rovers you’ll find within the Collection, its past is altogether better documented, starting with its inception in late 1969.

Typical of the early Range Rovers, this vehicle uses a Rover 3.5-litre V8 and four-speed ‘box to gracefully move from one destination to the next, as Michael Forlong discovered when he became the first owner of the car after Land Rover themselves in April 1971.

Forlong had produced some of the promotional content for the Range Rover’s launch, making films such as ‘Sahara South’ and ‘A car for all reasons’.

The Range Rover was passed through another two owners before arriving with Chris Greenwood in 1985. It was at this point that he and his brother, Scott, decided to restore the vehicle, making sure that each of the original parts was kept with the Range Rover.

A few years later, the founder of Land Rover Centre Huddersfield, Peter Garside, bought the vehicle in 1990 to place in the showroom up in West Yorkshire.

From there, the Range Rover has seen little of the outside world. In September 2014, the car went up for auction at the Salon Privé extravaganza and has since been loaned to the Dunsfold Collection.

For many of its years, this Range Rover has been neglected the attention it deserves, primarily because of its position in the history of the Range Rover family. In a way, whilst being the first has made it a special vehicle, it has also deprived it of a normal upbringing.

Being the first came at a price, but without such a sacrifice, we wouldn’t have the Range Rover family at all, and the hundreds of thousands that followed Range Rover 35500001A.

After Shane Penfold’s old Tomcat laid down its life to look after him in a comp safari accident, he built himself another – and it’s one of the finest examples around

t’s a grey and muggy day and we’re out playing with a few vehicles at Xtreme Off-Road 4x4 down in Somerset. There are a few vehicles enjoying themselves, but one in particular is jumping for joy: Shane Penfold’s Bowler Tomcat.

But then things get less grey and less muggy, and a lot less funny.

Happily, we’ve already taken all the pictures we need of Shane wringing the vehicle’s neck… because all of a sudden, it’s gone and caught fire.

The Tomcat is Shane’s toy, and it’s a rather expensive one – expensive and going up in flames, until the hasty application of an extinguisher brings the panic to an end.

Shane and Tomcats appear to have a chequered relationship, actually. He used to own another one, but if you search for ‘SCOR 4x4 Tomcat Crash’ on YouTube you’ll see what happened there. Over she went, several times, after the nose of the truck dug into the dirt. Shane’s racing again now, but the Tomcat took one for the team and laid down its life to protect his.

‘Racing a Tomcat is something you always want to do,’ says Shane. ‘But can you afford to run it, crash it up or put it into a bank or ditch?

‘The trouble is you’re always competing; you can’t just pootle around.

You’re always pushing it to the limits.

The roll cage is definitely the best thing

you can fit, especially once you’ve had a crash, because you realise just what can happen.’

The man has a point. There’s no point in owning a comp safari motor if you’re only going to use the first 2000rpm of its rev range.

‘It doesn’t come into its own till around 60-70mph,’ adds Shane. At that sort of speed, the Rover V8 will be roaring away, entertaining the onlookers – and playing on the back of Shane’s mind. ‘They are lovely engines,’ he says. ‘But you’re always worried something will go wrong.’

Of course, you don’t need a vehicle as specialised as a Tomcat to go safari racing. People have been doing it in full-bodied Range Rovers and Discoverys for years – often with great success. Put one head to head with a comparably engined Tomcat, though, and there’ll only be one winner – especially if both drivers tried to take any

corners at the sort of speed that only one of them is made for.

Yet when it comes to using the Disco’s drivetrain for the foundations of a Tomcat, it’s somewhat wonderful. The chassis, axles, wheels and brakes on Shane’s are all from a Disco 2.

‘It took us around 18 months to two years before we got everything how we wanted it,’ Shane tells us. ‘The Tomcat was built from new and was built to go racing, but we tried to make it better

by, for example, using the D2 chassis instead of the D1.’

The result is a Tomcat that looks as well as it goes. ‘I try and take it out as often as I can,’ says Shane. ‘I used to go out with the Southern Counties – they’ve got some brilliant tracks. My truck spends 99% of the time covered up, but when I do take it out people always say “Wow, what a beautiful car!”

‘It’s almost too nice to race!’

At any rate, we think Shane does a

good job of summing up why owning a Tomcat – especially one as good as this – can put such a smile on your face.

‘The adrenalin rush you get is amazing. When you’re younger, lots of guys want to be a racing driver – and when you’re out on a stage, you say to yourself, “I’m actually doing it!”. I ask some people what they do at the weekend and they’ll say, “Oh, just watched a bit of TV and that, you know.” Then they’ll ask what I did. And I’ll reply, “I went racing!”’

Rights of way therapy… It’s about moving into the slow lane, forgetting about your worries and just enjoying the countryside for a while. And when you get the chance to help others enjoy it too, so much the better!

W

hen you wake in a budget hotel round the back of a service station on the M4, the concept of a day’s laning might be a grim reference to being tailgated non-stop on the motorway, or even trailing up and down every aisle in the adjacent shop looking for something you can eat without feeling sick. Happily, though, the laning I was going to be doing this particular Sunday was the proper kind.

The outskirts of Bath were to be our playground for the day, but first I had to wait for my lift to show up. At this point I was standing rather curiously on the corner outside said budget hotel, feeling a bit conspicuous with my wellington boots on and a camera around my neck (I was wearing some clothes, too, I hasten to add). Still, I knew I wouldn’t be there for long, and when the familiar boxy shape of three non-standard Land Rovers barked their way into the car park, that was my cue.

Two of the vehicles were 90s, both of them around 30 years old but going stronger than ever. Paul Woodward was in a tidy blue hard-top rebuilt on a galvanised chassis, and Rich Armstrong was aboard a white soft-top whose black hood gave it a touch of the NAS look.

Our third vehicle was a 100” Bowler special from 1985. Its pilot, Dale Wyatt, is the President of the Green Lane Association and well qualified to lead a trip on some of the lanes around the very beautiful city of Bath.

‘It’s a very nice place, Bath. I grew up here so I know the area and the lanes pretty well,’ said Dale as we searched for our first lane of the day.

‘My family still lives here, in the same house I grew up in actually; I remember you can see the countryside even if you’re in the city centre.’

By this point I realised that Dale’s advice was probably worth taking. He’d warned me about the accessibility of his seats compared to our companions and their comparatively luxurious 90s – bucket seats and full harnesses tied in with a heavy winter coat and a large camera still swinging from your neck can make you look the epitome of the word ‘oaf’ very quickly indeed.

Nevertheless, our first lane approached and immediately we were transported from the rolling hills of Somerset to what felt like a rainforest.

Water trickled its way over the rocky floor towards us as we progressed, the canopy of trees above allowing only the slimmest of rays to shine through on to the ferns lining either side of our

trail. This was more like the Amazon, not Somerset.

Barely a hundred metres in, we came across a fallen tree. Now here’s where being a well prepared green laner comes into its own. Dale, Paul and Rich quickly parked up, hopped out and started clearing the path ahead, not just for us but for the dirt bike riders who had obviously tried to scrape underneath already, the horse riders who would never jump this in a million years and the cyclists and walkers who were enjoying their Sunday as much as us.

We were here for our own purposes, of course, but these three guys were providing a service to everyone. And barely two minutes later, our path was clear and the lane was usable for all.

‘Since the NERC Act came in, some of the horse riding communities have said they’ve found some of the routes harder to pass, just because there isn’t the same presence as when we were using them,’ said Paul. ‘I used to come laning regularly with the family. We had a baby seat in the truck for my Daniel and he was coming along from the age of two.’

In such a short radius, the outskirts of Bath can offer a distinct variety in lanes

lane with nothing but your truck and the countryside for company.

‘I’ve been laning for 30 years and have had a whole load of Land Rovers in my time,’ said Dale. ‘But I’ve had my Bowler for 12 years and I’m sticking with it for now – at least till I start struggling to get in and out of it!’

The Bowler in question has the 4.2-litre V8 from a Range Rover LSE fitted and it did sound rather tasty, especially down the more enclosed lanes. Dale, who was leading the way on this trip, had recently converted

from paper maps to running GPS on an iPad. ‘It is a lot easier with this, especially now I’m older. I don’t need to put my glasses on to read it!’ states Dale.

So, we’d had the mandatory morning tea break and were away again, winding towards Bathampton and taking in green lanes where we could – it was like a mega dot-to-dot game. I had decided to sit in with Paul for a bit in his hard-top 90, which (no offence, Dale) was a bit more civilised than that Bowler! Despite being on a B-plate, it was a Clearing a lane for yourselves is also a way of clearing the lanes for others

300Tdi, and the engine was mated to an auto ‘box – which did no harm to the smoothness of the experience.

‘I don’t use this on the road much at all to be honest,’ explained Paul. ‘The gear change is a little too sluggish. But on the lanes it’s great – the only drawback is there isn’t quite as much engine braking as you’d like. My daily drive is a P38 V8 with the gas conversion.’

We made our way over the toll bridge past The Old Mill in Bathampton, a very quaint part of the world that certainly wasn’t designed for the traffic of the 21st century. Having spent some time around Chippenham in the early part of the day, our afternoon routes would be on the south side of Bath.

Most of these lanes are quite a contrast to Wiltshire, which itself is relatively flat. Around Bath, the trails are tight and twisty – great fun, and they definitely keep you busy. If you come in the week, you won’t have the Sunday traffic around the neighbouring villages.

We had that to contend with, but it just shows you the draw of the countryside.

We saw countless walkers, with a few cyclists and horse riders thrown in. It really is for everyone.

guidelines to prepare trips around. You know how many vehicles can be in each party (four to six depending on the area) and whether that will involve splitting into separate groups. Resources such as Trailwise provide up to date

information on the status and condition of the rights of way, again something you must consider when planning your laning excursions.

As the day wore on towards a close, I hopped into Rich’s vehicle and we

headed on to some of the muddier lanes in the route. They weren’t just muddy, either – they were scratchy. We found some of the day’s more technical lanes here, too. Rich had told me earlier in the day about his love of getting out in the country – and not just in his Land Rover, either.

Rich was born and raised in Dudley, and we quickly moved on to the important matters of the day, like the Wolves football team.

We discussed Rich’s career, my career, his Volkswagen camper, his move from Dudley to Newbury and loads more. All this while enjoying a drive in the country in a wonderful old 4x4. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

The pair of us were so deep in conversation, actually, that we managed to lose Dale for a brief moment. This was after our final lane, where the Bowler had really come into its own. Trees overhanging, barely enough space for a Defender to squeeze through, two wheels significantly higher than the other two… I even had to rescue the top of Rich’s snorkel.

As the convoy escorted me back to my starting point, the sun lowering itself out of the sky, this had been one memorable laning trip. There had been laughs, chatter and debate. We’d seen a chunk of the country from the inside.

And we’d cleared a path for others to see it, too. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday, you’ve got to say.

t’s nice to be able to head out in your Land Rover and go for a drive from time-to-time. However, it’s even nicer when you have an efficient means of stopping. Yep, brakes are pretty integral to the driving experience, whether that be on your way to work, or if you find yourself down a technical Welsh lane.

But these are simple bread and butter components that we consume frequently on our vehicles – how often have you had a Land Rover in for ‘new discs and pads’? Probably more times than you’ve washed the thing...

Well, as usual, one place that can provide the answers is Marrion 4x4. In this instalment we take a Puma 110 Defender and give it a new set of pads on the front, and a change of discs, pads and calipers on the rear.

A basic, but essential procedure in the upkeep of any Land Rover, then.

Begin by removing the tyre, followed by the small split pins that are found on the brake calipers 2. Later models also have connecting springs, which need to be taken off. Some doubt whether they actually do anything 3. Still on the caliper, you must now take off the main retaining pins for the brake pads – there are two for each caliper 4. Changing pads can be done without taking off the caliper, but be gentle when easing the pads out of their holding

5. The pistons will now be exposed. If they don’t reset, through corrosion for example, then new calipers will be needed 6. If you’re changing more than just the pads, then move onto the discs. Clamp the brake fluid lines...

7. ...So that when you then disconnect the brake union, you won’t have fluid flying everywhere 8. To get the caliper off, remove the two 13mm 12-pointed bolts located on the back. Ditch the old caliper if replacing

9. Undo the five 17mm bolts keeping the halfshaft in place, before extracting the halfshaft from the axle 10. Once removed, you’ll notice the 52mm nut and washer that sits over the wheel bearing. Remove these items 11. These make up part of the enclosed unit behind the halfshaft, so keep the components uncontaminated 12. Extract the bearing and detach the hub from the stub axle

13. Just as the bearing and its surrounding parts must be kept free from debris, the stub axle should be given a clean, too 14. Undo the five 14mm 12-pointer bolts holding the disc to the hub and release the ABS ring from the disc 15. There are five studs with 10mm nuts on them that shouldn’t have come out with the ring... but this is a Land Rover...

16. If this happens, separate the nuts and studs, clean them up, then apply Loctite on the tips to seal them back on

17. Find the thread and ease in the studs, then (if you have one) use a stud driver from a puller set to fix them in place 18. Drop the new disc onto the hub and remove the pre-applied oil by using some brake cleaner. Tighten the five bolts 19. Place the ABS ring back into the recess...

Flatten the edge of the locking nut onto the stub axle to stop the rotation 24. Clean the outer edge that meets the halfshaft and use sealant to help seal the unit when the halfshaft is reinstalled

25. Feed the halfshaft back into the axle – sometimes this may need slight adjustments until it aligns. Then tighten bolts 26. Tighten up any wheel spacers (if you’re using them) and place the new caliper back onto the disc 27. Reconnect the brake union nipple and tighten up the two bolts securing the caliper on the back 28. Slot in your new brake pads and return the retaining pins before refitting the split pins. Refit wheel and tyre. Torque up

It was my first proper four-wheel drive, and that meant I was free to do with it what I chose.

For the most part, that involved crashing into things and getting stuck off-road. I charted the misadventures in the pages of Total Off Road – the former sister mag of this very publication.

Now, the thing about TOR is that it was all about hardcore off-roaders, so I soon grew accustomed to the ribbing I’d receive for driving a ‘hairdresser’s car’. Funny to think that, back then, a 4x4 with a live coil-sprung rear axle, low-range gearbox, short wheelbase and set of decent all-terrains would be dismissed as a soft-roader. Nowadays, it’d be regarded as one of the most serious off-roaders on the market.

Which brings me to my point, and, at last, my Freelander 2. Because it’s dawned on me that my Land Rover, which I tend to think of as a namby pamby SUV, has a lot of untapped potential as an off-roader. I’ve yet to get it stuck, though I admit I’m careful about the lanes I choose to tackle.

But show me a brand-new 4x4, including a Land Rover, that doesn’t have this vulnerability and I’ll show you, well, a Jeep Wrangler. And you only have to visit a pay-and-play site to see how few people tackle seriously challenging terrain in anything newer than a Discovery 2 or not-too-shiny Defender. The days of solid-axle trucks pounding asphalt and dirt alike appear to have passed.

So, here’s my question: how long will it be before someone develops some serious off-road modifications for the Freelander 2? My low-mileage

car is worth about five grand, so it’s eminently suitable as a second vehicle.

As I reminded myself during an enjoyable foray in search of water crossings the other day, it’s a credible off-roader straight out of the box. But with slightly elevated suspension, taller tyres to aid ground clearance and the reassurance of a front winch (or some decent tow points and a mate with a 90), I reckon it could be something of an off-road hero. And, thanks to that bump-absorbing all-round independent suspension, it would still be a great daily driver.

With the proliferation of soft-roaders,

and Land Rover’s turn towards executive car maker rather than serious 4x4 manufacturer, I reckon the Freelander 2’s day has come. I’m tempted to throw some resources at my vehicle and see what it turns into.

aving overseen contributor, Tim Gibson, fall in love with his Freelander 2 over the last six months or so, it’s very easy to find yourself browsing through the classifieds for that vehicle that seems to do it all.

The FL2 is relatively cheap to buy now and has credibility as a daily driver, as well as being able to do all the usual Green Oval stuff.

But take a look online, and at this very moment whilst I’m writing this

piece, there are Freelander 1s priced at £1,000 and below, that could be an even better ticket to LR ownership.

Surprisingly capable off-road, even without a low box, the FL1 could be an ideal hack, as well as a cheap means of getting around the lanes and play sites of the UK. Probably best to stick with a TD4, mind, but if you don’t have a vast budget and want a ‘heritage’ vehicle, why not look at one of the most affordable vehicles currently available.

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collec-

tor’s item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy.

The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub.

To mimic the civvy Series machines,

the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are.

This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 NA version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender Tdi (1990-1998) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel.

If you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine.

Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got.

After the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability.

Properly maintained, they can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper.

Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly.

Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few exam-

ples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces.

The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences.

With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years.

Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders.

The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money.

You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles.

With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace

and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers.

But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s in

good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors.

Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

£7000-£60000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (2007-2016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).

Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same off-road prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed

£500-£4000 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05).

Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done

£2900-£21000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96).

Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst

£1600-£9000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon?

Cons: Electrics. Nuff said

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for

strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013) Much of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling.

But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-2019) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses. And given that the Evoque was their fastest-selling vehicle for a number of years, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the purist.

They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

It’s actually still a capable thing

off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals.

The floppier Convertible was launched in 2016, and there’s also a three- and five-door version. We say stick to the latter, and avoid the 2WD model. What’s a Range Rover without four-wheel-drive?

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-present) There is a new Range Rover Evoque due to hit the roads of the UK any week now, but you’d do well to tell the difference between the new model and the outgoing Evoque.

Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar.

The main highlight of the new Evoque, however, is the fact the majority of

the range is made up of mild hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base front-wheel drive D150 Evoque escapes the electrification.

Our first drive review of the new Evoque will be appearing in The Landy in due course, by which point we’ll be better positioned to inform you whether this Mk2 version is any good or not.

Early signs, however, are promising...

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands.

It’s a vehicle we will be giving our driven verdict on in the very near future, but for the meantime, we do know this much: the Velar is a fine-looking craft and is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace.

It has greater off-road ability than the

aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance.

The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course.

Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...

£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07-’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12).

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched last year, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the SUV into new territory.

Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, they’ve taken one huge step towards doing so.

Having driven the latest Discovery, we can confirm that it has lost none of its versatility and is comfortably the

most capable Land Rover currently on sale today.

All of the engines have great flexibility and, along with its increasingly upmarket – and Range Rover-esque – interior, the new Disco 5 is one of the best machines to cover long distances in, whether that’s on the road or not.

Like most new Land Rovers, it’s easy to overspend on the options, but a well-specced Sd4 is all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval.

It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.
