INDESTRUCTIBLE 90 Servicing is one of your first ports of call as a spanner monkey. So we took our resident Td5 Defender 90 on a visit to Ashley 4x4 to see how the pros do it Full story: Page 46

Land Rovers are made of tough stuff – but for Shaun Myerscough, he felt there was still room for improvement.

After hundreds of man hours were spent on transforming this old 90, Shaun’s machine is sturdier than the oft-quoted brick lavatory… Besides, it can tackle the rough stuff like nothing you’ve never seen.

Ingenium Powertrain for 2017 RR Sport

L

Words: Mike Trott

and Rover has announced some major changes to the 2017 Range Rover Sport line-up – including a new engine to live under that bulging bonnet. However, the bonnet may not need to be quite so bulging once this new motor gets lumped into the engine bay. Yes, the Range Rover Sport is going to gain the 2.0-litre TD4 Ingenium engine already powering the Discovery Sport and versions of the Evoque. Thus this is the first ‘full-sized’ Land Rover to be fitted with the four-pot unit. In the Range Rover Sport, it’s being badged as the SD4 engine. That lettering change is significant because the engine isn’t going to be exactly the same as in the junior Land Rovers. For the bigger, heavier and even more expensive (£59,700) Range Rover Sport, the SD4 motor has been tuned to produce 240hp. This is expected to get it from 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds. But the standout figure is a combined cycle fuel consumption reading of 45.6mpg. That’s an incredible return from a vehicle that weighs well over two tonnes – and it stills chucks out 368lbf. ft of torque. Those statistics mean that this particular example of Range Rover Sport will become the company’s most efficient Range Rover Sport to date. The extra power has been achieved largely through adding a second turbocharger to the Ingenium engine. It’s not V8 fast, but it allows the vehicle to maintain a level of sporting credibility

while causing owners a lot less pain at the fuel pump. You’ll be able to distinguish the eco-friendlier Sport models through their single twin-exhaust configuration on one side of the rear bumper, as opposed to the usual dual-exit layout. Should you not be looking for such an efficient Range Rover Sport, there is also going to be the new and much sportier option of a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine. This raunchier powerplant kicks out a meaty 340bhp, a whole 100hp more than the Ingenium SD4, although the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 only manages 331lbf.ft of torque in comparison. Still, when driving it, chances are you won’t be complaining. No doubt it will sound rather fantastic, too. Elsewhere for 2017, Land Rover is bringing in some of its technological know-how to incorporate a raft of semi-autonomous features. These include Advanced Tow Assist, an Intelligent Speed Limiter and something called Blind Spot Assist. Many things, then, which are designed to ‘assist’ you with driving your own vehicle. The Tow Assist feature is fairly self-explanatory; helping you to park your trailer using the various cameras and screen available to you, while it also warns of an impending jackknife. The Intelligent Speed Limiter, meanwhile recognises the speed limit by reading traffic signs on the road and prompts the driver to activate the limiter. Once activated the driver can no longer surpass that limit.

There are loads of new features on top of this, like Queue Assist, Lane Keep Assist and Driver Condition Monitor, but one notable feature is the new Low Traction Launch technology. Say you’re parked on some mud or snow. When activated, the Low Traction Launch feature supervises the level of torque being applied to the wheels through the gas pedal, resulting in less wheelspin and more actual forward momentum. It’s technology that should come in useful when you’re stuck with automatic transmissions all the time. Finally, the Sport is also going to be given some much-needed infotainment updates, starting with an enlarged 10-inch display that incorporates a dual-view feature and the ability to ‘pinch’ the screen when navigating your many options. It’s all powered through InControl Touch Pro and providing the smoother claims are well-founded then we’ll be on to a winner. Various new highlights include Commute Mode, and it all increases our ability to be further connected with our automotive counterparts. Naturally, the company’s in-house Picassos have also been stirring up a few new colours from their palette, and there’s a new Bright Pack being offered to all Autobiography Dynamic models – bringing silver highlights to your vehicle for a ‘more vivid finish’. All this adds up to some significant changes in the Sport’s mid-life makeover. Prices will start from £59,700 and the new variants will be on sale from this winter.

Range Rover Writes its Future

W

Words: Graham Scott

hen it comes to writing the biography of the epic Range Rover, there will surely be a chapter on the Autobiography. The latest Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic may be beyond most of us mortals, starting as it does at £132,800, but we can all enjoy watching this iconic British 4x4 conquering world markets just as surely as it has conquered terrain around the planet over the decades. The SVAutobiography Dynamic name tells you that JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations have been busy on this model. You can tell just by looking under the bonnet. There you will find

the most powerful production Range Rover ever made. The 5.0-litre V8 is supercharged and breathed on to produce 550bhp. That’s backed up by 501lb ft of torque, so you’re only going to have to rev this beast if you really feel like it. Ride height has been lowered by 8mm and there’s a raft of electronic aids to assist handling. Dynamic Response counters body lean in corners while Adaptive Dynamics monitors what the driver is up to, as well as what the road is up to, so that the Range Rover can smooth out any imperfections, be it a pothole or a rough bit of throttle work by the driver. It’s safe to say these are aimed at on-road finesse rather than off-road prowess.

Given the performance on offer, with a top speed of 140mph, it’s a comfort to see that Range Rover is now using Brembo braking, something that catches your eye as you see the jaunty red brake calipers behind the 21 or 22in new alloys. Inside the luxury just gets ever more luxurious, with diamond-quilted leather seating, knurled finishes on some controls and a variety of beautiful wood veneers. Outside there are new and unique colourways and some bespoke exterior flourishes like the side vents and grille. If, for some strange reason, you didn’t have £132,800 available, then for a measly £76,350 you could still have the new 2017 Range Rover, as

the TDV6 Vogue. And if you wanted a petrol engine there will be the option of a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 with 335bhp and 331lb ft of torque. While the new model will show numerous upgrades to every aspect, perhaps the biggest area of upgrade is that of technology. It’s a good thing the Range Rover is a big vehicle, because now it’s packing more hightech than NASA. Consider that it will have a whole host of programs that come under the heading of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These include as standard Rear Park Distance Control, Cruise Control and Speed Limiter, Lane Departure Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking (the last now necessary if you want to get a good score in the Euro NCAP safety scoring). If that’s not enough you can add the Drive Pack which actually has a function called Driver Condition Monitor. Yup, your Range Rover checks up on you many times a second to see how

you’re doing. Hmm, he’s getting a bit sloppy even by his standards, better tell him to take a break. Seriously. Then there’s Blind Spot Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition and Reverse Traffic Detection and, oh, a whole load more. Useful will be the Advanced Tow Assist, which makes it a doddle to reverse with a trailer, something many have trouble with. They won’t if they just look at the screen in their new Range Rover. We could go on and on with the acronyms and systems, but you get the picture. Oh okay, just one more. There’s even a mode that notices if you commute regularly and it notes the routes. Next time it may suggest another route to the same destination because the vehicle is getting live traffic updates. If you want – and please don’t – it’ll then tell your friends and family that you’ve arrived. It’s fair to say that if you can afford the next Range Rover, any model, then you have already arrived.

ound Four of the 2016 Defender Challenge by Bowler Series took part at Walters Arena in South Wales as a hill rally. The Endeavour Foundation-liveried Bowler Defender of Mission Motorsport was piloted by LAET Colin Murphy and co-driver Ex-Private Lionel O’Conner. It was the first time either man had sat behind the wheel of the Defender owing to other commitments getting in the way of any possible preparation time. Still, making it easy would be making it boring, right? At the 11th hour Mission Motorsport entered a second vehicle, a 1980s 3.9-litre Tomcat with CEO James Cameron at the helm and ex-signaller James Luke as co-pilot. With both vehicles now in attendance and suitably scrutinised before the competition got underway, attention turned towards the visit of explorer Ed Stafford – Land Rover ambassador and a good friend of the charity. But as pleasant as the service area may have been, the weather out on the stages was beginning to look increasingly menacing. The vehicles took up their marks and the team manager, Mike Burton,

was then able to breathe knowing it was all in the lap of the gods - and a few speed-hungry men. The first stage was short with what seemed like only minutes before the cars were racing back into service ready for the team to check the drivers were satisfied with the vehicles. Some longer and more arduous stages lay ahead, however, and Mission Motorsport battled on bravely long into the afternoon. After the final stage of the day, though, the Tomcat ran into trouble. A front lower shock mount had sheared a bolt and bent 90 degrees, subsequently bending the shock below. To add insult to injury a few of the upper shock bushes had exploded, leaving the remnants spread over the engine. With limited service time available, veteran Land Rover employee Wayne Walker and manager Mike Burton got stuck in trying to remove the shock. Before long, they succeeded, a replacement bolt was found and the soldiers improvised some new bushes out of the discarded mudguard. All in a day’s racing. Co-driver James Luke couldn’t carry on into day two as the rough stages from 24-hours earlier had flared up his injuries. Luckily, a spare – but not so experienced – set of hands came to the rescue in the form of Mike Burton.

This would be Burton’s first event and he was flung into the role of co-driver as the team looked to advance through the gruelling stages awaiting them out in South Wales. The Tomcat suffered some scarring along the way, though. After dicing with the third-in-class vehicle, Colin Murphy lost control and connected with a tree. The crash left them blocking the road, although Mike and James arrived in the sister car moments later to ensure that as little time was lost as possible. The damage looked worse than it was and proved only cosmetic this time around. Both vehicles made it through despite a high attrition rate on the last stage. Overall the Tomcat finished third in class and 14th overall with the Bowler sixth in class and 19th overall. The team are immensely proud of their achievements, with the charity’s motto, Race, Retrain Recover, doing what it says on the tin. They use the medium of motorsport to retrain wounded, injured and sick service personnel and use this discipline to aid the recovery process. The next event the team is involved in will be Round Five of the Defender Challenge on 3 September at Ludlow, so please come and support a very worthwhile charity.

Can I have a word...

T

his month at The Landy, there’s been a bit of a reflective mood throughout the office. Don’t worry, no one has died. Although there is a peacock (no joke) that lives in the neighbourhood and since the last issue it has tried to corner me into my own office. I really wish I was joking. Talking of peacocks, we’ve had a Range Rover Evoque in this month, an Autobiography Dynamic edition no less, and we’ve been reflecting on the last five years of this flashy, yet juvenile Range Rover. It seems to have gone so fast, the time, but then it is always something that works against us. For the Evoque, time has been its friend and the model has gone on to become Land Rover’s fastest-selling vehicle of all time since its launch back in 2011. Find out what we make of this bestdressed Evoque on page 24 and why it’s been such a top-seller for the brand. We’ve also gotten a little nostalgic over the Discovery 3, recalling just how much of a revolution change this vehicle really was back in ‘04. They’re coming down into a very affordable price bracket now and if you head over to our new buyer’s guide on page 52, we’ll see if we can help you choose whether it’s a worthwhile investment or not. Elsewhere in this October edition, you’ll find a new segment on our new resident Td5 Defender, which is going to be used as a testbed for many products from the industry, and we’re starting this month with a trip to John Craddock’s to fit some new Cooper Discoverer AT3s. There’s also more features, news and products than your eyes can handle, but for now, I’ll see you next month. Mike Trott, Editor michael.trott@ assignment-media.co.uk

Land Rover sales are climbing

L

and Rover has had another record month of sales in July, helped by strong performances in both China and North America – both just slightly important for exports of the British 4x4. The charge was led by the Discovery Sport, with 8392 examples sold, backed up by the Range Rover Evoque, with 8208 sales. Overall, Land Rover sales are up an impressive 15% so far on 2015 with 261,194 vehicles finding homes around the world. The whole Jaguar Land Rover company recorded even more astonishing sales overall, with Jaguar’s figures up 91% in July compared to the same month last year. That’s down to the XE saloon but also to the F-Pace SUV. Seems like the world can’t get enough of British 4x4s, but then we’ve known how good they are for simply ages.

ould Ernst Stavro Blofeld himself drive one of these? Possibly not, but we know his organisation uses them. And now you too can drive a Defender remarkably like that seen doing hair-raising stunts in the James Bond Spectre film. Tweaked Automotive, who spend their days building one-off Defenders for a bespoke clientele (no names, no pack drills), decided they really wanted

to build a replica of the Defenders seen hurtling down snowy slopes, intent on doing beastly things to James Bond in the film. So now the closest thing you’re ever going to see to those Land Rovers in the film is alive and looking for an owner. Is that you? Obviously it would help if your career involved working with the Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. But a job at HMRC would suffice.

Given that Land Rover’s own SVO created the originals, making a replica was not a light-hearted decision so Tweaked Automotive started, fairly sensibly, with a Defender 90 Station Wagon loaded up with full XS trim, with the 2.2 TDCi engine. It was black. After this it took rather more than a bit of tweaking, not least because in the film they were 110s, and this was a 90. For example, the Spectre Edition got a 2” lift as opposed to the 110s which had a 4” lift. That in turn meant that the wheels were shod with 35” tyres rather than the 37” ones on the film 110s. Tweaked did actually experiment with the bigger tyres but found the slightly smaller sizes just worked better on the 90. However, they did use the same wheels as in the film, 16x10” Spectre Beadlock rims, and fitted them with big Maxxis Mud Terrain tyres for the same look, and the same abilities. North of the wheels, the 2” lift involved a complete suspension upgrade, using heavy-duty everything, from springs to radius arms. The steering gained an uprated damper as well as heavy-duty steering arms. You won’t need big biceps to drive the thing. Along with the uprated suspension comes various upgrades for the engine,

pumping power up to about 190bhp, with an equal rise in torque. Part of that was to fit the Mantec snorkel, for when the baddies inevitably plunge into a river. Nobody cares about the expendable bad guys, but the owner of this rig gets a full Safety Devices roll cage. It had to be tweaked to work with the snorkel, but it really looks the part, as it extends upwards into the roof rack. enhancement The bumpers too needed to be Defenders modified, with the ends raised for extra clearance and Ltd. to match those in Omega Automotive ey were modded to fit with rationstheoffilm. theThKuman family. the extended wheelarches, which really nsion, Rubber, Cooling look the part. Th at’s because they are, nies around the world. the big flared arches being exactly the same as on the film vehicles. Tweaked have really gone for authenticity here, with even the recovery/ tow rope for the Warn Zeon 8 winch being identical to the ones used in Spectre. It’s as close as possible, with the same yellow brake callipers, same lights and everything. Inside the new owner will get a bit more comfort than bad guys in leather jackets and shades normally get. Since they spend their time hanging out the window blazing away with various machine guns and pistols, the heated leather seats on this vehicle would be rather wasted on them. Although the three cameras at the front and the three at the rear would be helpful to show them that huge pile of logs they’re about to explode into. Tweaked Automotive spent a couple of months making this all work and come together. It’s a lot more than simply bolting on a range of accessories. Indeed, it looks like the real deal because it’s about as close as you’re going to get unless it was built for you by SVO, or you have a fortune and a liking for stroking white cats. If you’re interested, Tweaked have this actual Spectre Defender for sale – so get on to your scrambler phones right away.

ometimes it’s just the little details that lift the whole thing – like when your wife pairs her Manolo Blahniks with jeans or you remember to actually put some trousers on. So it is with your Landy, particularly if you don’t have the budget to really do the thing up to the

nines. One little trinket, albeit a rather solid one, is the fuel filler cap. Supertweaks can now supply a fuel cap for your Defender which is machined from a solid billet of aluminium. Obviously you want numbers here. I give you 6082-T6. That’s the grade. I’m guessing that’s good.

It certainly looks good, and is available in silver, grey or black at a price of £78.00. It will fit all Td5 and TDCi Defenders and is supplied with a lock so you get to keep your own fuel. They even supply a key. All you need to do is remember those trousers. www.supertweaks.com

Alive Tuning can now provide you with a set of comfort lowering springs for your Defender 90. These springs have been in development for many years to ensure that they are optimised to provide a smoother ride and improve handling. The vehicle is lowered by one

and a half inches at the front, and one inch at the rear to provide as smooth a ride as possible on the pothole-ridden roads of the UK. While the words ‘vehicle’ and ‘lowered’ in the same sentence may set alarm bells ringing in your head, how-

ever, the actual visual effect of this work is minimal. The springs themselves are manufactured in Germany by Eibach but to the exact specifications of Alive. The four-spring set costs £300.00 plus VAT, and can be found on the company’s online shop: www.alivetuning.com

Mist You It’s ironic when you think about it. The original demister/defroster vent trim parts, which help channel warm air to the windscreen, tend to warp over time because of heat and sun damage. They then look a bit useless and don’t really work, and you’ve got enough friends like that already. Once again, Series-Defender Outfitters has come up with a solution that is made of solid aluminium,

powdercoated black. The sun would have to get a lot nearer to warp these babies. They are for the 14.5” long vents which means they’ll fit any Defender from 1989 onwards (and they won’t fit the smaller vent spaces of earlier models). Like lots of things, they come in pairs. And like lots of things that come in pairs, they’re on the internet – at www.seriesdefender.com.

Take a Deep Breath Landies have some terrific qualities, but sometimes there are some details which leave a bit to be desired. If you’ve had one for a while or have had a bit of accident damage when that tree leapt out at you, then you’ll notice that the side air intake vent grilles are made of a black plastic that isn’t exactly bulletproof. Series-Defender Outfitters have a much more ballistically resistant option. Their grilles are made from ¼” solid aluminium and then powdercoated black. This is a direct replacement for the Land Rover original part but will obviously last a whole lot longer and will look (and be) more robust too. The grilles won’t fit a 200Tdi but will fit most other models. If you want

to check whether yours could benefit from adding some more strength to the bodywork, then go to www.seriesdefender.com.

Getting a Handle If you’re on the pull then you know you need something robust to get hold of. If you’re pulling your door to on your Land Rover you don’t want to feel that it’s all a bit flimsy. Particularly if, say, there’s a lion charging towards your closing door. Admittedly, that scenario may not play out in Bradford, but who knows? Series-Defender Outfitters have come up with a robust pair of door handles which are CNC milled from

solid aluminium. They feel and look tough, adding just a hint of extra ruggedness to the cabin to counter that slightly odd cologne you decided to wear today. The handles fit any Defender, are powder-coated black and cost $140.00 for a pair, which according to the Remain camp of doom will be equal to about £1000. You can check them out by paying a visit to www.seriesdefender.com.

Roll Your Own We know that Safety Devices makes good kit. It’s the company that has during its time provided protection for everyone from the British Army to the Camel Trophy. Its roll cages are made from cold drawn seamless steel which is then zinc-primed and powder-coated, so they look

as tough as they are. And they are tough. Just the thing to have above your Land Rover for that moment when above becomes below. Britpart is now stocking such a roll cage for the 110 Defender Double Cab Pick-up. It attaches at six points on the exterior and

bolts in, protecting the vehicle’s occupants and also the load in the bed. Note this is for models from 2007 to 2015 and it won’t fit earlier models with the raised ribs on the roof. For more details check out the Britpart website at www. britpart.com.

Sometimes you’re going to need the spare wheel mounted outside your Discovery 3 or 4. There are many reasons why and who are we to judge you? It’s what you need, accepted. There are clearly many ways to achieve this, including lashing the wheel to your roof rails. But the

traditional route is to attach it sturdily to the rear. Flimsy mounts are the last thing you need when you’re dealing with a heavy wheel and tyre, but if you think about the South Africans then flimsy isn’t the word you’d use. At least, not to a Springbok rugby prop forward. The

South African company Motorradical make a proper spare wheel carrier and in fact they’ve just improved it. The carrier is mounted to the rear bumper crossmember, and mounts through the rear bumper. With lighter weight and new design, there is an improved pivot to the whole thing. Naturally it swings out so you can open the rear door and then it locks closed again. It’s made of black powdercoated steel and costs £825.00. It’s available through APB Trading, and you can see more about it at www.expeditionequipment.com.

Stop Dropping Your Tail As we know, a drop-down tailgate is a sign of a gentleman’s conveyance, which is why Range Rovers have them. It means you can sit on the tailgate while observing the number of grouse you’ve just shot, or while waiting for Jeeves to unpack the jolly old hamper. But sometimes us proletarians would find a side-opening door to be a bit more useful, so we can rummage around in the boot for our Tesco sandwich and Diet Coke. The solution lies not with Land Rover but with Britpart. It stocks a ‘tailgate rear half door kit’ which converts a drop tailgate to a side-opening half door. Clever and useful. The kit contains new door inner, hinges, lock and everything you need to carry out the conversion. It’s suitable for Defender pick-ups and soft tops and is certainly different. It marks you out as not a gentleman but, frankly, who did we think we were kidding? The answer to that question, and so many others, is at www.britpart.com.

A Pack of 1948

This is the Frost River – Arrowhead Roll Top Pack from 1948 OE. You’ll like it. The roll top bit means you simply put the stuff in from the top and then roll the pack down and tighten it against whatever amount of stuff you have in there. That means the pack stays tightly packed and neat looking if it’s half full or totally full. Above it are two lash squares so you can add more kit to the outside should you run out of room in the interior. The 17.5-litre capacity is enough for a laptop and there’s a small external pocket to boot. It costs £149.00 and you’ll find it at www.originalequipmentshop.com.

This low-profile winch will fit neatly into most centrally-mounted bumpers on a range of Green Oval vehicles, from Defender, to Discovery 1 and 2 and Classic Range Rover. Bed Time Milner Off-Road now stocks something that you may well find of long-term use. It’s a kit by the firm U-POL which forms a tough protective coating for load beds. It’s a two-component urethane system that is applied directly to the load bed, forming a tough, waterproof liner. The material stays flexible so it won’t crack and that also makes it a useful sound-deadening layer as well. The Raptor Bed Liner can easily be applied by the owner and forms a barrier that can deal with, well, pretty much anything. U-POL say it is resistant to fuels, hydraulic oils, salt water and animal urine. Note it doesn’t mention human urine, but hopefully you’re past the stage of wetting the (load)bed. The company claims you can apply the coating with pretty much anything, from a brush or roller to a gun. Milner will sell you a 4-litre kit for £70 plus VAT, or another tenner gets you the Schultz gun as well. This should really make your bed. www.milneroffroad.com

If you have an LT230 transfer case about your person you’ll know that sometimes even the toughest things break, which means weaker things break even sooner. Syncro Gearboxes feels your pain but have decided not to empathise but to do something about it. Specifically, they’ve come up with a cunning design for a new diff pin. The XPIN replaces the two standard ones in the centre diff with the custom design you see in the photo. It has several advantages, the main one being strength as it is CNC machined from 300M steel, with a solid centre and the pins are full length. There’s even some nifty laser etching. Cost is £100.00, but that’s not all. Syncro Gearboxes has also designed a new intermediate shaft. Again, this is made from 300M steel and is a direct replacement for the original, but one that should stand up to wear and tear better. It too is £100.00, so if you’re probing about in your transfer case, you can now make it look shinier and stronger inside. www.onlinegearboxparts.com

‘You can kick it off a cliff and jump back in it at the bottom’

Bombproof

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

I

magine a heavyweight boxer such as Anthony Joshua, who has been making waves ever since he won Olympic Gold all of four years ago when it was London’s time to shine. While Mr Joshua is a bit of a don at the moment, he wouldn’t have emerged from his mother 26 years ago as a fully rounded prize fighter ready for his first boxing bout. No, instead he needed to train relentlessly and improve and hone his physical condition until he was finally ready to do battle and knock the lights out of whichever chump wanted a piece of the champ. I have a hunch that not all of you will know who I’m on about, nor will you give a hoot about boxing. But the same idea can be applied to all top athletes - and the Defender 90 of Shaun Myerscough. I’m not saying Land Rovers have always been blessed with the most athletic of attributes, but they are sporting vehicles that can be used for

the rugged outdoors and they do have an air of muscular presence to them. Best think more discus specialist than the physique of Mo Farah, though. Like a discus thrower, Shaun’s Defender is pretty beefy and that is partly down to the fact it’s a bit of a Myerscough production. To give you an idea behind the philosophy, Shaun says the aim of the build was ‘To be able to kick it off a cliff and jump back in it at the bottom.’ Presumably so you can carry on escaping the zombie apocalypse or any other generic catastrophe where a boggo Citroën Berlingo simply won’t suffice. This 90 has been the subject of hundreds of man hours and, when you look more closely, it’s not really surprising. Virtually every modification Shaun has applied is a wonderful piece of home fabrication. The trailing arms, for instance, they’re homemade, as are the engine mounts which have helped lower the 200Tdi engine by a

couple of inches, and that’s before you check out the tubular framework that protects every corner of this shatterproof gladiator. But as I said, no-one is born a raging warrior. For Shaun, the story of his 90 actually starts with a Discovery.

‘I had a Discovery on a 6” lift with Detroit lockers and reinforced bumpers which I sold to fund a challenge truck project,’ explains Shaun. ‘Inevitably, though, I started to miss the driving, so I got this 90 just so I could get out there and actually use a Land Rover again.’

Above: Such was Shaun’s determination to make this Defender indestructable, he even constructed a trellis-style section of caging for the roof for added driver protection

Land Rovers are pretty resilient machines even in their standard Solihull suits. But for some of us out there who want to really use a Land Rover they can appear a bit soft around the edges. Shaun Myerscough’s Defender is different, because this 90 is as solid as they come

While Shaun’s 90 may exude the image of completion today, the 90 that entered his life was ‘an absolute pig,’ according to the man himself. But as Shaun also points out, if you know what you’re doing then you needn’t fear any vehicle. Fortunately, this 90 was available at the right price and in 2011 Shaun purchased the vehicle with 80,000 miles on its clock. And while its general condition wasn’t anything to behold, it was still on its original chassis and bulkhead – both of which were in good condition and neither had any patches on. And there isn’t a patch on Shaun’s handiwork either, after concluding this two-year project that puts many other off-roaders out there to shame, both visually and when competing. You can’t really judge his Defender when it’s on all fours. Instead you have to see it from a different angle, like if it were turned upside down.

Top: Rather than leave the air intake on the side of the windscreen to inevitably be crushed or wiped out by a tree, Shaun has positioned the snorkel within the safe dimensions of the 90 should it not be found on all fours Above: Heavy-duty is an understatement. Diff guards may be a popular protection aid to Land Rover owners out there, but this particular diff guard would laugh off a grenade. The 6mmthick steel helps with this ‘The plan was to always make it as strong as possible so that if it ever rolled, the shape would remain the same – hence the snorkel being positioned at the rear,’ says Shaun. To make it the Green Oval equivalent of He-Man, there is a substantial amount of tubular framing around the body’s entirity. No part of the Defender’s body can touch land before the tubular exoskeleton. The wings, cage and front end all use tubular steel in creating maximum protection for Shaun, with the likes of the trellis roof just one example of how thorough the work has been. ‘It is over-engineered in many ways,’ admits Shaun, ‘but I would rather do it all once and have it done properly.’ The steroidal strength is all around the vehicle, like the Salisbury axles at both ends and the numerous homemade 6mm steel guards protecting the diffs and steering. There are no bolt-on bits here, just good solid engineering that Shaun has his dad, Alan, to thank for. ‘My dad is from an engineering and machining background and has helped with the majority of the fabrications, while I focused more on the mechanics,’ declares Shaun. ‘It was built by us, for me and no one else. It was a very Continued overleaf

Left: This is one of the prime examples of just how much thought and planning has gone into the creation of such a machine. While numerous other project builders have utilised tubular frameworking for their vehicles, few have gone to the extremes Shaun has in making sure every inch of the Defender is protected in some way. Literally! Right: Just in case he forgets where reverse is, or if he finds that it’s taking an age to select said gear, there is a small but useful light that shines away once Shaun has achieved his mission of selecting it. It’s not always easy in a Defender, but now he has no excuses. The other switches help bring out the ARB compressor and rear locker when progress is being hampered

Right: Rather unusually-shaped compared to off-the-shelf trailing arms out there on the market, but Shaun’s home-fabricated components have method behind the manufacturing. The curved shape allows for easier progress over obstacles and the maintaining of momentum – which is always key. There is also full polybushing all-round, naturally Below: Mud there is a plenty of, but look past the flung brown and you’ll see some home-made rock sliders and a set of beefy Insa Turbo Special Tracks. The latter items carry a substantial offset, courtesy of the fact Shaun has turned the fitted Discovery 1 alloys around to further elongate the veicle’s already aggressive stance

‘It was built by us, for me and no one else’

Above Left: Dislocation cones, disc brakes at every corner… it’s all there, including also a 3” suspension lift achieved through the Extreme 4x4 springs. Articulation is proficient enough for trialling of all levels, a point Shaun frequently proves Above Right: Ahead of the doors on either side rests a very intricate design. Air inlets, almost designed as gills, lie next to the door hinges with the sole job of providing another source of cool air for that hard-worked 200Tdi. They also look pretty wicked

personalised project and we never wanted it to look like a challenge truck. We’ve tried to keep everyday truck elements in, like the three seats in the front, so that my wife and daughter can come along for the ride still.’ Like all seemingly superhuman athletes, actually you do have to remember that sometimes they’re humans just like you and me. That means they too probably like to waste away with Netflix whenever they get a spare moment. Okay, so some elements of Shaun’s 90 are generic, but what isn’t generic is the shortened chassis that has been achieved by chopping eight inches off the back and four off the front. The overruling philosophy carried through the vehicle is that everything is positioned where it is for a purpose. Attention to detail is second to none. The oil pump, for example, has been moved from the side to the back just for when the truck is articulated. Weight has been centralised as much as possible, again going back to those homemade engine mounts, while at the front the 200Tdi lump uses a Td5 intercooler which calls upon two electric fans just for itself. Another electric fan focuses its attentions solely on the radiator to make one very tightly packaged front end. In fact, if you’ve been on holiday this ‘summer’ and remember facing the

conundrum of trying to fit everything in your case, perhaps get Shaun to take a look next time. Oh and if packing your suitcase isn’t enough, Shaun could probably rewire your whole house like he rewired the 90 – a Defender that now has three individual fuse boxes. Clearly, many hours of labour have been spent on it. And there is no greater illustration of this than the front end, which now resembles more of a battering ram. The winch is tucked away, unlike on most other off-roaders, so the mud can’t reach the mechanisms as easily and there is nothing to pierce. Instead you just have a big black wall of metal smashing its way through to glory. Don’t be fooled, though, that Warn 8274 winch can still be accessed and can still free-spool along. It’s like thinking Anthony Joshua can only drink water, but then realising he can drink even the boldest boozer under the table. Attitude is in abundance when it comes to Shaun’s 90. It’s the attitude of top athletes who can get to the very top of their game. With Shaun and his 90, he was determined that together they’d become an unyielding force, and the Defender has been prepared for battle. In terms of creating a vehicle that is nigh on indestructible, there is only one man who deserves the title.

Birthday Best

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Ivor Donnapugh

Five years is a long time, but at times it can feel like just five minutes. As we hail half a decade of the Evoque, The Landy looks back at the impact of this baby Land Rover and how it has become an influential driving force behind JLR’s prosperity

New Ingenium engine is capable, economical and offers useful bundles of torque

I

n the company’s entire 63-year history, Land Rover had never done anything by baby standards – until it decided to launch an infant of a Range Rover. The year was 2011 and the machine in question was labelled as the Range Rover Evoque; with added design flair from Mrs Victoria Beckham and the simple aim of bringing Range Rover extravagance to the masses. Jaguar Land Rover’s new starlet has been a phenomenal success. The Evoque is to-date Land Rover’s fastest-selling vehicle of all time and you need only undertake one school run to see some child being left on the side of the kerb having just been ejected from the passenger seat of an Evoque. It is not just a car for the yummy mummy on the school run, though. To pin the Evoque with such a clumsy stereotype – however easy it may be to do so – would be neglecting many of the facts behind this very important vehicle. Do you think JLR would have just opened up a new factory in Brazil had the Evoque been a flop? Do you think Solihull, Halewood and Whitley would have expanded like they have if the Evoque had been a complete and utter dog’s dinner? I think not, intrigued reader.

You see, the Evoque, while not necessarily adhering to the authentic traits of the original Land Rover, has done as the brief described; to bring people into the Land Rover brand and to get more people than ever before buying vehicles with the Green Oval emblazoned across the grille – whether on a hardened, rough ‘n’ ready Defender, or a Land Rover much more street than field. But to see why it’s managed to achieve such success and helped rake in enough cash to pay for Jaguar Land Rover’s Christmas party for the next 68 years, we thought we’d actually get one of the freshest Evoques and reacquaint ourselves with just what makes this car such a hit. And because The Landy doesn’t do things by half, we’ve gone and brought you the very best there is: a Range Rover Evoque in Autobiography Dynamic spec, retailing at £57,625… cor blimey! It’s finished in a smouldering Firenze Red, although not everyone appreciates the exterior on this baby brute. Personally I’m a sucker for a bit of red on my motors – just preferably not actual blood. But it’s not the colour of this car that makes it worth nearly £60,000. Because this is the Autobiography Dynamic

model, our Evoque is blessed with such trinkets as the Dynamic bodykit with styled exhaust outlets, illuminated Autobiography treadplates and a Park Assist feature that means the Evoque can get you parked in a tidy manner, even if you can’t. That’s not all either, because we’ve had options thrown in on top. Think of it as the proverbial cherry on top of a red velvet cake. The ‘cherries’, as it were, include a £2,075 Rear Seat Entertainment package that allows passengers to watch TV while on the move – a spot of QVC down the M40 perhaps – and there’s the Active Dynamic Drive Line add-on alongside Adaptive Dynamics for £830. The former has been a feature of the Dynamic models for a couple of years and the active driveline is a system that can unhinge power to the rear axle once your speed has travelled north of 22mph, thereby creating a more fuel efficient car on 2WD when up and running in cruising mode. However, show the Evoque a set of twisties and that rear axle is brought back into the game within 300 milliseconds. You can feel the car react after you’ve exerted your actions upon the ideally-sized steering wheel; throw

the car into the corner and then, like a caffeine shot to the heart, the Evoque wakes up and hauls you round the corner with minimal understeer and body roll. This isn’t a traditional Land Rover, and it doesn’t try to disguise that. The Evoque is of a new breed of Land Rover, one that can wow occupants on tarmac as well as dirt. In reality, despite the Evoque being one of the very best compact SUVs out there in terms of off-road ability, its new comfort zone is firmly of the asphalt variety. It’s like a son or daughter growing up and the family always expecting them to go on to take over the family business, except they’ve developed their own ambitions and want to branch out in life. The Evoque can still surprise you off-road, but it would be quite happy if it never had to ever tackle a blade of grass again. The baby Rangey was designed to be more like a car than anything that had gone before it. Sure, there were the Freelanders 1 and 2 before it, but the Evoque is the girl next door in high heels and a cocktail dress, as opposed to the Freelanders which are the girl next door when she’s suffering from the lurgy.

• ACR V8 remanufactured engines: • Engine management systems Range Rover, Discovery, RR Sport • Dynamometer testing Land Rover don’t make ugly cars and • ACR 4-cyl remanufactured • Electronic gearbox control the Range Rover Evoque has always had engines: Series and Defender, systems that element of class and desirability petrol and diesel • Wildcat Engineering racing about it, although the posture it carries • Turnkey, stripped, 3/4, short cylinder heads for Rover V8 may be too loud for some, particularly • Road and competition • ACR Power Plus components for in this Autobiography Dynamic trim. • CNC ported cylinder heads improved power and efficiency The 20” alloys actually make the ride • Capacity increases • Delivery world wide just a little friskier than it should be, and its styled bonnet vents and chrome Put ACR’s race-winning experience in your Land Rover exhaust pipes are not to everyone’s tastes. But then fashion has always been on the daring side of the spectrum. It isn’t all fashion, though. Honest. The Evoque is very comfortable to live with on a day-to-day basis and the actual running costs of the vehicle are fairly modest, even if the price tagACR for 90x135mm ad.indd 1 07/10/2014 the vehicle isn’t. A true 40mpg is an achievable figure, even in this 180bhp TD4 Ingenium variant, while performance figures are impressive too – 0-60mph taking just 8.5 seconds. This is an engine for everyday usage, and its strengths are negotiating roads around town and dealing with motorway cruising where you can use the torque to complete swift overtakes with ease. In town, the nine-speed ZF auto ‘box is competent enough to cope with most people’s driving habits, but

Plush interior keeps you comfortable and connected I found the transmission to be a little too slow on the uptake at times when asked for a more engaging experience. The Sport mode, for example, is more of a gimmick than a real game-changer and the same goes for the flappy paddles on the wheel. Land Rover never wanted to create a driver’s car, though; more a car that would suit the environment of everyone’s daily grind. It is a very comfortable machine, with the Oxford leather seats a real highlight of the lavish cabin. It’s refined too, and more so now with the newer Ingenium power units. Unfortunately for the baby Range Rover, its case as a practical compact SUV were undermined with the arrival of the Discovery Sport last year. The new kid on the block is more user-friendly with another row of seats, bigger boot space, and all the while carrying the new Ingenium engines and nine-speed auto that the Evoque does. I started writing these words believing that the Evoque was something more than a fashion statement. But, in truth, I’m finding it hard to see how. If you had your sensible brogues/ stilettos on, you’d realise a Discovery Sport is a more practical option for

Active Driveline gives the Evoque agility and grip through the bends

roughly the same amount of money and if you were being truly smart with your head as opposed to your attire, you’d blow your £57,000 on a Discovery 4 which is, quite simply, all the car you’ll ever need. I’m making it sound as though I don’t like the Evoque, but that’s not the case. I drove it up to Bala in North Wales the one weekend and I was as fresh as a daisy after the two-anda-half-hour trip. I loved trying to unstick the tyres around the bends in the sweeping Welsh roads, I liked how it accommodated all the luggage I asked it to carry; how it kept me cool or warm when I asked it to in those fantastic seats; let light in through its panoramic roof and guided me to my destination with its navigation system, all the while I played my favourite driving anthems through the Bluetooth connectivity point. But so many other cars could have looked after me in the same way. There are more practical cars out there; better driver’s cars, and there are better Land Rovers. The Evoque, though, is a piece of art. It’s a fashion statement and a vehicle that is worn rather than driven, in much the same

way a Rolex watch is worn. Why do you think we now have a convertible version of the Evoque? A Rolex watch doesn’t give you wings or allow you to teleport through time and space – it tells the time. There are far cheaper watches out there that can fulfil the same task, but I guarantee you’d feel different wearing a Rolex to your ordinary digital watch you use for the gym. The Evoque is the same. When I took it through towns and pulled up to places in it, you felt special and it was a pleasure to step in and out of. People would remark how nice or good-looking the car was and you can sense that they’d happily take the keys off you and trade you their current car. It just proves that looks do sell. And that’s why Jaguar Land Rover is lapping it all up at the moment. This Autobiography Dynamic edition, for instance, is for people who play right into the hands of Land Rover – because it’s seen as the best. Land Rover’s baby Range Rover doesn’t need to be the class-leader in any particular field – because this is a vehicle that just is class. Happy fifth birthday, you beauty.

Scrapcheap Challenge

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

Some of the best project builds emerge from a pile of scrap metal and for Gary North that’s exactly what his Series hybrid started out as. Three years later, he’s ended up with a retro-looking Landy that’s gained the odd mod-con but kept all of its original charm

S

crapyards are a treasure trove of many things. Mainly scrap, obviously, but there is much more than that within the realms of these periodic table mashups. I’m not necessarily talking about the different kinds of metal you can find, nor that you should go digging on your hands and knees just on the off

chance a nugget of gold has been flung in without realising. I’m talking about possibilities; a place where the potential to create something stupendous is but a thorough search away – and much blood, sweat and cursing lies in wait beyond that. One gentleman – Gary North – received a phone call approximately

No leaf springs here! The coil springs and shock absorbers indicate the real origins of this vehicle, that old Classic Rangey that was saved from the scrap heap

five years ago. Fortunately it wasn’t someone trying to tell him to switch his energy supplier, but instead a man from a local scrapyard who knew Gary was in the Land Rover industry. ‘I’ve got the remains of a Land Rover here,’ said the voice down the phone. ‘Are you interested?’ Naturally, curiosity didn’t kill anyone, but Gary was intrigued to see what awaited him. It turned out that the chap on the phone had become the temporary owner of a 1972 Range Rover chassis, which came with the original engine, axles and steering setup. These components didn’t look much like lemons, but Gary has certainly tasted sweet lemonade since the conclusion of this Land Rover’s story. Needless to say, Gary didn’t leave the scrapyard empty-handed but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a cloudy moment or two.

You might think snapping up a Range Rover chassis, measuring that sainted 100 inches, is a sure sign of intent to build an extreme off-roader with the ideal dimensions for poise, agility and performance. But actually, originally the chassis was never going to stay at that length, as Gary explains. ‘When I was talking to the guy at the DVLA to explain what I was aiming to do, he told me that if I were to cut it down to 88” I would have to go on to a Q plate,’ recalls Gary. ‘If I kept it as a 100” vehicle, though, along with the original steering, plus both front and rear axles, I could have it on the original plate. ‘It all started out as a project with the aim of building a vehicle I could use everyday and I’d always wanted a tax-exempt vehicle for my own,’ adds Gary. ‘I normally work on Series vehicles, but as a base for myself, it seemed like a good opportunity.’

To be honest, we all know that a Series Land Rover isn’t renowned for ride comfort. If we’re being really honest, riding in a Series Land Rover is a bit like commandeering a washing machine on its end cycle down a street in San Francisco – by the bottom you’re likely to be in a less than ideal state. Gary, though, now faced with the 100” chassis in order to avoid the Q plate, was going to be experiencing a smoother ride as a result and, given his insistence on making the hybrid a coil-sprung machine, the everyday credentials were shaping up nicely. While a lengthier chassis and coil suspension would aid refinement, this Range Rover and Series combination was issued with Gary’s favourite powerplant: the 200Tdi. It’s a popular engine for so many reasons and, mated to an R380 transmission as is the case here, the result is a cocktail of engineering perfection. According to Gary anyway.

Seats – check. Three of them – check. Three seats you could actually call seats... absolutely! ‘I restore Series IIs predominantly, although at the moment I’m focusing on two Series Is. I don’t really touch Series IIIs at the moment, but it just depends on what people want at the time,’ responds Gary. ‘I’ve done plenty of 200 conversions for Series Land Rovers before. The 200 is my favourite engine and the R380 is the best ‘box combination to go with that for Series vehicles.’ This hybrid of Gary’s you see has the outer skin of a Series Land Rover, although it was never just a case of popping it on. The body is that of a late Series IIA, which explains the vintage visuals, albeit the underpinnings are taken from a Classic Range Rover. ‘Everything on the front of the Land Rover is normal Series IIA in terms of panels, except for the front grille and panel that has been taken from a Stage 1 V8,’ announces Gary. ‘The rear tub is something I made myself so that I could get the legroom by pushing the seats further back in the cab.’ Yes, this is a Series looker that doesn’t require you to bend into some tuck position so you can dive into the hot seat. Instead, Gary’s perseverance has yielded a Series Land Rover with ample loadspace, yet his legs remain usable upon reaching his destination. While much of the surface really does shout Series Land Rover, there Continued overleaf Gary, being the engineering whizz that he is, has managed to engineer a CD changer into the cabin of his hybrid Land Rover so that even his best tunes can enjoy the ride with him

Left: Gary is a huge fan of the 200Tdi engine, and he believes that it is the ideal motor in which to add modern horsepower to a vintage Land Rover. It’s even better, according to Gary, when matched with the R380 transmission

Below: From the outside it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly which panels have come from certain models. So to clarify... the front wings were borrowed from a late Series IIA, not a III. And that front grille panel was inherited from a Stage One V8 to make extra room for the 200Tdi and its intercooler are a couple of signs to point out that this is not your average Green Oval. The fuel filler cap for example is identical to that of an early two-door Range Rover, while inside lies an interior that has left the Series years behind. The six-CD multi-changer, for example, is a mod con Gary fitted for himself with the intention of bringing some car-like features to this archaic ‘70s machine. ‘I pictured it like this and I wouldn’t change anything about it,’ smiles Gary. ‘It’s a unique vehicle and it was built for me with my personality being on the vehicle. The only thing I would say to people is that hybrids are something you need to want. ‘They require a lot of hours and I would say that 90% of my vehicle has been modified in some way or another. We’re on about 100 hours of work just on the chassis itself.’ The only work that Gary hasn’t carried out himself, though, is the professional two-pack paintjob that is responsible for the lovely Bronze Green patina. ‘It will have been completed three years this December, with the build taking me around two and a half years,’ states Gary. ‘Although it started

off as an everyday vehicle, in all honesty, it’s only really been used on nice days. It’s been more mollycoddled than it should have been really.’ Perhaps mollycoddled isn’t the right word, perhaps cherished would be more appropriate. It’s understandable having spent so much time on a project that you’d hate to see the poor thing deteriorate faster than a Land Rover left by the sea. It’s one of those things in your life that becomes more than a hobby; an obsession and to see out a hybrid build is not something many people can stake a claim to.

Gary’s hybrid is a superb combination of Land Rover heroes, with an end product that mixes retro styling with real-world practicality. It wasn’t so much a scrapyard, but a gold mine that Gary stumbled across those five years ago. Gary’s hybrid has been the recipient of much love and affection, but it is something Gary no longer requires in his life. As such, this unique Land Rover is up for sale. As the sun sets on the fourth-generation Discovery, we look back at the story of the Discovery since 2004, when the model took its dive into 21st century engineering. It’s been an astonishing 12 years for the Discovery brand, but will the future be as golden when the next Discovery is born later this year?

T

he Discovery has been around for 27 years and in that time its identity has changed more than any other Land Rover. In 1989 the Discovery was launched as the vehicle to not only save Land Rover itself, but also to fill a huge gap in the market since family 4x4s were non-existent at the time. This was an era prior to the MPV and the SUV crossovers we have loping along our roads and highways today. An affordable 4x4 that could seat seven

Going For Gold

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Steve Taylor and Land Rover and provide all the answers to any practicality conundrum a young family could throw at it was clearly going to be a winner. But the Discovery has been a winner in so many other ways, too. From a capability viewpoint, the Discovery has offered Defender levels of performance off-road for years, but without hurting the on-road advantages it holds over its agricultural brother. Fully-grown men could drive it without having to amputate any limbs, while the Discovery was and is the tow Discovery 1 (1989-1998): Launched as Land Rover’s answer to the family SUV, the Discovery 1 offered seven seats, Tdi power and a package that could virtually match the Defender off-road Discovery 2 (1998-2004): The TD5-engined Discovery 2 was more road-biased, though with live axles at both ends it was still very truck-like by today’s standards

car to have. It was also suitable for all occasions, whereas the Defender was frequently dishevelled and only fit for a farmyard, and the Range Rover too ostentatious for everyday locales. In 2004, though, things looked like they could take a turn for the worse. The Discovery was the next member of the Land Rover family to substitute raw engineering for electrical witchcraft. Yes, the Freelander 1 with its viscous coupling and Hill Descent Control already had some gadgets

thrown in from PC World, but it was a new vehicle designed for a new Land Rover in 1998. The Range Rover, however, had been a mainstay of the Land Rover brand since 1970 and had sold its soul to the devil when it evolved into the P38, a vehicle that had electrics more temperamental than an iPhone that’s just been dropped in the toilet. A toilet was actually one of the few places a P38 would have felt at home. It’s stateof-the-art air suspension and fancy

Discovery 3 (2004-2009): Unveiled in 2004, the Disco 3 brought Land Rover right into the 21st Century. Its interior packaging was an absolute masterpiece, and its TdV6 engine was a revelation. Air suspension meant it could handle on tarmac and work wonders off-road, and this was the Land Rover that introduced Terrain Response to the world

on-board computers were as compliant as a pet crocodile. Still, things could only improve. And thankfully they did. The L322 Range Rover was a merciful development that delivered electronics that really did work and levels of luxury that meant it would be produced for a whole decade before being ousted by the L405. But would the Discovery 3 be so lucky in 2004? While the advancements from the Discovery 1 to the Discovery 2 were

Above: 26 years of evolution later and the Discovery has developed into a very different beast to the three-door examples that appeared on the eve of the 1990s. But in many other ways it is still the champion it always was like stepping out of your house and down to the corner shop at the end of your street, the shift between the Discovery 2 and 3 was more like teleportation to another galaxy. Gone was the live axle setup from the Discovery 2 and in came the fully independent suspension system that has been the preferred choice for all new Land Rovers this millennia. There were some worried faces when the Discovery 3 first emerged; a sense that one of Land Rover’s vehicles could lose its way while questions were raised as to whether a vehicle commanded by wires could ever be as capable as a Land Rover that employed a human hand to operate the diff locks. They needn’t have worried. The Discovery 3 was a revolution – and a revelation. It looked infinitely more handsome than its predecessors, yet remained purposeful and utilitarian in its approach compared to the Cheshire-inspired L322 – something that Land Rover has let slip over the last five years or so. The Discovery 4, for example, has been ‘enhanced’ year-on-year to the point where it now shares some of the Range Rover’s flamboyancy a little too comfortably. The Discovery has always been understated and that’s how it should stay, in my opinion. While the image was spot-on in 2004, will the next Discovery man-

age to pull off the same trick? With spy shots rife on social media of the fifth-generation Discovery in its latter stages of development, surely the answer lies just around the corner. Manufacturers, however, are placing an emphasis on building family brands – the Range Rover being a perfect example of how all front ends can look the same – and therefore our educated guess would be that the new Disco will fall somewhere between the Discovery Sport and the Discovery Vision Concept showcased back in New York in 2014. Think Sport front end mated with a Concept rear, then you’re pretty much nailed on. Whether that’s how you want a Discovery to look is another matter. So besides looks, what else do we hope the next Discovery has stolen from the D3? Perhaps the same usability under our right foot? Yeah that’s right. You’ll be familiar with the old Tdi and Td5 units of years gone by, and how gutless they could be out in the real world? Well when Land Rover plonked the 2.7-litre TDV6 inside the D3, it was a momentous occasion. No longer did a Discovery need to dither about in the slow lane on the M5, because this was a powerplant with some actual power. In fact the torque levels, measuring up at a considerable 325lb ft and combined with Discovery 4 (2009-now): 3.0 SDV6 engine means more power with less emissions, plus, more luxury, making it more of a champion than ever

nearly 200bhp, came in such abundance that traffic enforcement officers started to utilise Discovery 3s up and down the major arteries of Britain. In the outgoing Disco 4, only the 3.0-litre SDV6 engine is still available as the Graphite and Landmark versions are the two remaining options for new buyers. Just another sign that the next Discovery is weeks away. But if the next Discovery’s engine is anything like the SDV6, then I for one will be satisfied. The power delivery is even more compelling than the old TDV6 and the torque is so vast it stuns all but the most exotic machines on our roads. Nevertheless, Ingenium engines are the future at Jaguar Land Rover, although we’ve only had the 2.0-litre four-pot engine to play with to-date. Land Rover cannot utilise this in the Discovery 5. While it is an engine suitable for the baby Sport, the Ingenium TD4 in the next Discovery would be a step backwards. JLR know this and as such, we reckon there has to be another member of the Ingenium family coming along imminently. An Ingenium TD6, perhaps, although only time will tell. The eight-speed ZF auto ‘box can be carried over, though. They have my approval on that. And the same Continued overleaf

Above Left: The Discovery 3 was a very accommodating place to dwell. Leather seats, cruise control and various other creature comforts made up half the story in the cabin, but luxury has been a continued theme throughout the Discovery 3’s and 4’s lifespan – almost to the point at which it matches its Range Rover cousins Above Right: Diff locks were just the start of the Discovery 3’s repertoire. It had a 4x4 information screen so you could monitor what each corner of the vehicle was doing, and marvel at the Terrain Response wizardry applies to the cabin too. There’s no denying that the Discovery 3 and 4 have displayed a timeline of interior development, with each update the Discovery received edging it towards a more rounded ‘premium’ package. But it crucially remains functional and practical. I hope Land Rover have had those words pinned on the mood board during design. Sure, Discoverys are now almost double what they were in price when the Discovery 3 was first unveiled, and consequently customers need to see concrete reasons in why Land Rover feel this is justifiable, but the Discovery has to remain the jack of all trades. The Discovery is a Land Rover that will hang on to the coattails of a Defender while on an outdoor pursuit, yet it can hold its own against much

more gaudy vehicles when it delivers you to a gala ball and you’ve got your best coattails on. Worryingly, though, now that there is no Defender, the Discovery is technically the British manufacturer’s most ‘extreme’ vehicle. It’s a strange truth, but then the Discovery 3 was never a wimp off-road. In honesty, it was, and still is, fantastic. It blew away the competition back in ’04, with new tech such as Terrain Response and it gained Hill Descent Control culminating together to make one virtually unstoppable machine. The electronic wizardry was there to witness too in the cabin as you watched live updates of the car’s underpinnings working out the different loads and keeping tabs on the centre and rear diff locks. The articulation,

despite its independent suspension set-up, was seriously impressive and it has been a very capable car off-road ever since. The new Discovery needs to push even further forwards. We know it will do so by employing even more wires and computers in the back of the dashboard, but hey, some things have to move with the times. In short, the next Discovery needs to continue riding that tightrope it manages to do so well; balancing perfectly the requirements for practicality and capability, along with refinement, luxury and real-world manners. I hope the next Discovery turns out to be a Discovery 3 – only 12 years newer and therefore modernised as oppose to being a complete remake into something different. Keep the exterior looks handsome, but not vulgar; the cabin functional and premium, but not flash. Land Rover, you can continue to employ lightweight technology so you can shave 400kg from its kerb weight and help us out on those MPGs, but don’t leave us with a hamster on a treadmill in the engine bay. Give us a faster infotainment experience and keep the other six seats in so I can bring all my friends along to show them what you can do. Let me cherish the same towing prowess as its ancestors and ensure that wherever I want to go the car can get me there – tarmac or not. But ultimately, make sure the Discovery stays a Discovery. Don’t let it go chasing Range Rovers down the street – it doesn’t need to. It never has. I hear the phrase ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ on occasion, and sometimes I think of the Discovery. Only for this particular Land Rover model, the more apt phrase is simply, ‘master of all trades, rubbish at none’.

Fancy trying to carve a path through new unchartered territory? Want to have more of a blast in North Wales than you’ve ever had before? Then sit down, grab a cuppa and listen to the story of two guys who know how to enjoy themselves in the quiet town of Bala

A Bala of Lau

ifferent people have different ideas about what they consider to be a challenge. Some find it a challenge to get out of bed in the morning. Others think that not eating chocolate sounds like the challenge from hell. I happen to know of the odd human who considers it challenging to stop the flow of toxic gases from their departure gate, if you know what I mean… The Landy was recently invited for a day out in Wales to witness a couple of guys face their own challenge, one of which is becoming a regular occurrence. These lads don’t seem to be the type to look at chocolate or even flatulence as an issue – they’re more programmed to think: ‘Here’s a steep valley with no possible way of a motor vehicle getting up it - so let’s go up it!’ Having attempted the ‘non-passable pass’ a couple of times previously, these two off-road diehards aim to shorten the time it takes to drive up every time they visit. Our host for the day was David Mitchell, owner of Landcraft 4x4, who

runs off-road training courses and offroad driving days. David has an ideal set-up, with permission to use 6000 acres of private land located around the outskirts of the small Welsh village of Bala. Enough room for a couple of 90s, then. Although wide-open space was hardly what this pair were seeking. Our first contestant is Julian Hussey. Having only got into off-roading a couple of years ago, it’s clear how quickly it has taken a hold of him. ‘I’ve had an interest in vehicles and vehicle maintenance for a long time and was looking for something that would fulfil my desire and that I could involve my two boys in,’ says Julian. ‘After reading, researching and chatting, I came up with off-roading!’ Julian now owns, arguably, the best Defender ever made, in the shape of a 200Tdi. And he hasn’t hung about in making changes to the vehicle to ensure it can satisfy his needs. ‘I started with suspension modifications, followed by a low-line winch, and this soon showed up the weaknesses of the standard electrical system. To sort that, all the wiring was upgraded, with a second battery and a second alternator added to the arsenal.’ Since then he’s added a rear winch and an Ashcroft locker, and managed to get his hands on a second-hand Gigglepin winch – lucky devil. Next up will be a rollcage for extra protection. We started the day as any man should – with a full English breakfast. Conveniently for David, the café is just down the high street in Bala, not even fifty metres from his office. After we Left: Julian’s 200Tdi Defender 90 looks fairly standard. But with modified suspension, an Ashcroft rear locker and winches at both ends, plus a twinalternator electric system, it’s a very well prepped off-roader

were all fuelled up and ready for a day out in the forest, we headed to the start point for attempt number three of the Welsh winching extravaganza. The start line, if you can call it that, is a set of tyre tracks leading off the main forest path and into the base of a stream. Stream? Make that ‘waterfall’. From there, the idea is to climb up the stream, over rocky steps and boggy patches of vegetation and onwards towards another track, elevated substantially higher than the start point. Julian explains, ‘When looking for new routes, we go for new challenges and the need for a more technical approach. It’s not just about driving; it’s knowing where to secure the tree strop to get the right angles etc.

‘When I bought my first Defender, I realised I needed to learn the basics of off-road driving, so arranged a course with Dave. He asked me to join them on one of his standard adventure drives and things progressed from there. I met Steve on a few of these events, not realising initially that we lived within a mile of each other. The friendship and mutual interests have developed from there.’ Conditions were warm and sticky in the morning, making it feel as though we were progressing through the Welsh equivalent of the Amazon rainforest. But there’s no challenge too tough remember? As mentioned, the other component of this winching duo is Steve Klein-

horn. Like Julian, Steve has only had his ex-military Defender for a few years, but is very much a Land Rover kind of guy now. Steve describes how his initial interest in off-roading stemmed from when his dad became the owner of an L200. Bah. ‘My dad suggested I should buy my own 4x4 so for my 21st birthday, as a treat to myself, I decided I was going to buy an ex-military Land Rover 90. ‘I met Julian on one of Dave’s Adventure Plus days. We got chatting about the Land Rovers and discovered that we only lived ten minutes away from each other. Our friendship has blossomed and we have ended up spending hours on each other’s drives, fixing and modifying the vehicles.

‘Having continued with the adventure plus days, we then decided we still wanted more of a challenge and started to organise our own days out with Dave so we could find more extreme and challenging routes.’ The platoon set off at 9.40am and made good advancements up the passage in the first hour. Julian’s son, Sam, was nearly lost to some sinking mud, but we made sure he didn’t disappear altogether and, more impressively, he still possessed both boots to go home in as well. The two 90s split briefly, opting for separate paths in order to reach the top. Steve chose the more gradual inclines, while Julian continued up the stream before reaching a small cliff.

David was assisting Steve; Julian had Sam and Russ, one of David’s instructors, helping him to overcome what essentially was a sheer rock face. ‘Sam definitely has the bug,’ Julian smiles. ‘It wasn’t long before I knew I’d either be dragging him along or racing him to the Defender! He takes after his dad with my interest and intuition. That is one of the main reasons it all works for me.’ Of course, with so much testosterone, any group of males splitting up and sniffing a hint of competition can only mean one thing. Steve made good ground, going through some of the undergrowth, and cleared the muddy parts with the Continued overleaf

help of some large trees. Julian was able to get past the sinking stuff and was winching into the lead until the rope snapped and slight alterations had to be made. Although Steve was first to make it to the point the paths re-joined, by 11:30am both vehicles had reached the top, hitting a new record time. It’s a benchmark they’re likely to find difficult to beat, but they’ll no doubt be giving it a go very soon. Julian already thinks they can beat it again. The record time left us with an earlier-than-predicted lunchtime and a chance to talk Landy dreams. Julian says: ‘My dream is probably to be able to continue to develop my interest in off-roading and to spend more time doing it – maybe have a business that combines the two!’ While Julian is forever the businessman, Steve’s aspirations would just see him use a Landy wherever possible. ‘I would love to be in a position where I could consider entering big European winch challenge events in somewhere like Russia,’ he says.

‘Loading up my 90 on to a trailer and driving there in my 110 all kitted up… it would definitely be a once in a lifetime experience. ‘I have to admit I love being outside of the truck, working with the winch rope, planning the route and generally scrambling around the terrain, as well as being in the driver’s seat!’ After lunch, we trundled over the Welsh mountainside to another forest where the guys discovered another steep ‘pass’ to conquer. Initially descending through the forest, the ground was particularly soft and fallen trees from winter lay as obstacles to test the vehicles once again. The deadfalls needed to be winched to the side to allow for completion. Just another day in Wales, then. Slowly, the 90s began to travel down the slope and through the sea of nettles, until the winches were once again called into action. First they helped the vehicles to hop over a tree and then lower them down, not least because Julian’s 90 suffered some brake fluid loss towards the end of the descent. A

Left: David looks on with a watchful eye as Steve looks at making progress up the incline. To David, this everyday life: watching Land Rovers do what they do best

41 quick fix at the bottom meant another climb back up the hill to finish the day. ‘My favourite aspect of the Land Rover is its absolute simplicity,’ says Steve. ‘Since owning my Land Rover, my confidence in my ability to maintain, repair and modify it has grown immensely! I have had the engine out, gearbox off and many other jobs going on. I never thought I would be doing things like that on my driveway, but I love it! ‘I can’t explain it, but being behind the wheel of my Landy just puts a smile on my face. I find them a joy to drive, so much so that I purchased a threeyear-old 110 as my daily drive.’ The 90, which Steve owns, is not without its fair share of mods either. ‘The main ones are the front Goodwinch TDS 9.5 winch with air-operated freespool, the rear-mounted Warn M8000 with an uprated Bowmotor 2 and the slightly larger Insa Turbo Special Tracks, which I have found to be a very good tyre.’ Steve has the usual underbody protection, such as QT diff guards, Gwyn Lewis track and fuel guards, rock sliders and a heavy-duty steering guard from Precision Plasma, but the suspension and drivetrain remain standard for the time being. However, like Julian, he has a couple of plans with a rollcage on the list this summer and a Warn 8274 winch. He also plans on combining the extra pulling power with engine power. As a side project, Steve is rebuildContinued on Page 44 Below: Thinking time. It isn’t all drive, drive, drive. Braai-braai BBQ We like to fiddle about with barbecues in this country, which usually consists of prodding sausages on the grill with one hand while drinking a

beer with the other. In South Africa they do it properly. Having a braai is a major deal and involves a great deal of technical expertise if you’re out in

the bush, usually under the eyes of expert and voluble male companions. So they know about barbecues. Which is why a braai from a South African manufacturer is almost certainly going to be the real deal. CAM Products is one such company, and they produce a braai with a twist. It’s the Flat Pack Braai Brill BBQ, a name that gives the impression they decided to throw all the descriptive words at it they could. The ‘flat pack’ bit is clever though. It means all you need to have in your Land Rover is a ripstop bag which is so thin it will slide into almost any gap. The carrying handle means you can take it easily anywhere and then quickly unfold the braai. It’s light but strong, being made of stainless steel, and comes with either four or five sides.

To the point Knives are very useful when out in the big wide world. You can use them for many things – chopping a tomato; carving your initials into some bark or even just having one about your person so you look and feel like you know what you’re actually doing while out in the bush.

One place where you’ll be able to pick up many feel-good accessories is Blades and Bows. This Gerber GDC Lock Knife, for example, is currently on sale at a special offer of just £13.99! It’s a 2.5” stainless steel blade with a grippy, rubberised ‘Techide’

At £79.00 it looks just the thing to impress your friends and convince them that actually you’re a bit of a bushman and all-round wild cook. If that’s the image you’re going for,

though, don’t forget the zebra and kudu steaks – economy sausages just won’t cut it with this braai. To find out more, head for www.expedition-equipment.com.

Take a hike handle for greater accuracy when in use. And it’s even covered by Gerber’s lifetime warranty. What more could you possibly want. Actually, if you’d like more knives and big boy toys, go to Blades and Bows website for more products and information: www.bladesandbows.co.uk

Day packs – they’re really useful bits of kit as they don’t take up too much room and they’re not going to encumber you if you need to just travel on foot for a bit. Like if you have driven to a beauty spot and want to go off exploring and maybe have a picnic. Or if you’re deep in the jungle and you have to hike to the nearest mud-hut village to ask the headman if he happens to have a Series I distributor cap about his person. Those nice people at 1948 Original Equipment are very ethical people and so try to ensure everything they make, sell and distribute has as low a carbon footprint as possible, so this Frost River day pack isn’t made from high-tech materials that make a lot of pollution in their manufacture. The High Falls Short Day Pack is made from tough waxed canvas and should be able to shrug off thorns, rain and nosy camels. We’re assuming the model is called the Short Day Pack because otherwise it’s the day pack under the High Falls Short label which would be odd. Punctuation is a devil isn’t it? Anyway, the pack is slim on your back so as not to impede your progress,

and has a big compartment with a padded back, as well as numerous pockets, web loops and all you could need for whatever you’re likely to carry on a day’s jaunt. Overall it can hold about ten litres so this isn’t the thing for a three-day hike in the woods unless you travel seriously light, but for a foray away from your Land Rover to explore the landscape on foot it would be just the thing. It costs £79 and you can see more details on it through their website: www.original equipmentshop.com

ing a 200 Tdi engine which he hopes will eventually replace the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated lump his 90 uses at present. This duo, then – along with the extended family – have found a passion for Land Rovers and love using them even more. ‘The Defender has been developed from a legend,’ Julian says. ‘I am with the whole thought process that must have taken place many years ago on the beach in Anglesey. Being technically minded certainly increases your appreciation of how capable the Defender really is!’ And Julian and Steve are on a constant mission to push those limits further each time, showing just how capable their vehicles can be. Some trucks are the sort of machines that people dream about, often because a dream is all it will ever be. A Land Rover, on the other hand, allows us to pursue our dreams and keeps on pushing us until we achieve them. And all the while we’re having (sorry) a Bala of laughs. Dave Mitchell has 6000 acres of off-road heaven to play with, sure enough. And it’s a higher heaven that these two constant customers are forever winching themselves up to in the Land Rovers they’ve built themselves.

T

he event: The Adventure Overland Show. The dates: 24-25 September 2016. The location: Stratford-upon-Avon Racecourse, Warwickshire. This will be the fifth time this popular show has been held, and as

ever there are new innovations, ideas and stands to see. If you’re thinking of heading Out There, then you should look to start with the Adventure Overland Show. This is the place to answer all those questions. What kit do I need? Do I need a visa for there? What about travel insurance in Outer Mongolia? Should I take ten spare tyres just in case? Where am I? One innovation this year is The Map Room. Go here to get those questions answered by Overland Sphere, run by Martin McGowan and his team, where they can give you the latest info on going pretty much anywhere in the world. Because they’ve been there. ‘Been There, Done It.’ If you want to feel this, then we suggest you go to the room with that motto above the door. The room doubled in size last year to cope and it’s doubled again this

year, it really is that popular. Speakers will talk about all aspects of overland travel, including bushcraft, GPS navigation and the very necessary budget overland preparation. There will be a wide range of trade stands, many of them smaller operations that you won’t see anywhere else throughout the year. They offer inno-

vative products and services, many at very attainable prices. If you decide to make a break of the show, then they have camping pitches from Monday 19 to Thursday 22 at only £10 per vehicle per night. After that the weekend rate is a very reasonable £25 for the whole weekend, from Friday to Sunday. There will be

live music on the Friday and Saturday nights and of course The Landy will be distributed free at the door. So if you’re planning an overland adventure, big or small, make sure you go to the Adventure Overland Show. And if you can’t find it, then maybe you should think again about that trip to the Hindu Kush.

DIY Td5 Service If you fancy yourself as a bit of a spanner monkey but don’t know where to start, then servicing is likely to be your best route in. It’s one of the most important aspects of vehicle maintenance, and is often less challenging than it first appears 1

Words: John McClane Pictures: Michelle Thruxton

S

ome of the first steps towards becoming a mechanical guru come through the simplest of jobs – like servicing your own Land Rover. Making sure that your vehicle is well maintained and running in tip-top condition is paramount if you want your Landy to remain as trouble-free as possible. We hear countless stories of people who will put a vehicle through its MOT each year but, as servicing isn’t compulsory, they don’t see the need to keep the vehicle in check. Consequently, some

months or years down the line, they look befuddled at why the engine has gone up in smoke like when your uncle turns to petroleum to light the barbeque. Hmm, maybe a glance at the old dipstick would have been beneficial? Still, those of us who understand that Land Rovers are like pets, and therefore need pampering 24/7, will be keen to make sure the service intervals are adhered to. With this in mind, we’ve taken our latest recruit, a Defender Td5, down to Ashley 4x4 in Staffordshire – the county’s only independent Land Rover specialist – where they steered us through a routine Td5 service. And if you’re worried that the Td5 is some

electrical monster that will spit at you like a cobra, rather than your old Series II that will just smile and wave its carburettors at you, then fear not. The Td5 is not so daunting. The man who is making it less daunting is Ashley Counsell, the face behind the name. His company has been running since 2002 and before that Ashley was an expert at a Land Rover main dealer where he honed all his skills on these fine vehicles. A Td5 service is relatively straightforward, but for a few possible banana skins along the way. But providing you give yourself a spare morning or afternoon, you should be well on your way to self-servicing heaven.

1. Unclip the air intake from the airbox and then unclip the fastening on the airbox. Remove old filter 2. Place in new filter making sure that it remains within the airbox and lies relatively flat 3. You can see on the left of the picture here the type of fastenings that you’re dealing with – just simple clips 4. Once the new filter is in place and the airbox has been fastened back up, offer the air intake to the box and clip back into place

5. Unscrew the bolt of the oil filter housing keeping it lcoked down 6. Release the housing and you’ll see the oil filter lurking within The first port of call is the air filter. Now, using Genuine Parts can be expensive, so you can always turn to OEM equivalents or quality products from Britpart or Bearmach. The casing unclips like you’d expect from an old glass cordial bottle latch and you merely slide out the pipe to free the box, then unclip and open the airbox to reveal the now defunct air filter. Next slide in your fresh air filter – we used an OEM part from MANN – and adjust until it sits neatly within the airbox. Then it’s just a case of fastening up the clips you released a few minutes earlier. Next we move onto the oil filters. Yes, that’s plural because on the Td5 you’ve got two of them. One of Ashley’s mechanics, Martin, took over for this segment of the service. The first oil filter is easily accessible, but unfortunately the second is positioned in a more remote location. The trick here is to sort the easy-toreach filter first so you can get your eye in on changing a filter, then focus on the fiddly one afterwards. Martin uses a specially designed wrench for the second oil filter, which hugs around the filter making it easier to release and hook back up again. Have Continued overleaf 7. Equipped with Autologic Diagnostics This means we are able to diagnose and repair any Land Rover model up to the present year!

10. To carry out the oil filter change you’ll need to loosen the oil drainage plug at the bottom of the sump, near the front anti-roll bar 11. Make sure you have a tray/bucket to collect all the old oil 12. While you’re at it, you need to make sure you replace the washer on the drainage plug to ensure there are no leaks 13. Afterwards, fill your Defender back up with oil. We used Ravenol 5W-30 and it’s been running fantastic since

some absorbent material ready, i.e. some disposable paper towels or rags for the small amount of oil you can’t escape losing down there. Patience is key here, but eventually you’ll work your new oil filter back on. Having changed the filters, you’ll also want to change the actual oil itself. This is undoubtedly easier when you have a workshop and a ramp to utilise, but it can be achieved without. Firstly, get yourself under the front anti-roll bar and locate a slit within the undercarriage of the Defender’s protective panels. You’ll need a ratchet or a similar tool (preferably on an extended handle) in order to undo the oil drain plug at the bottom of the sump. Naturally, as it loosens, be ready with a tray, container, bucket or other liquid-catchable device so that you don’t start oil-skating your way across the floor. Hopefully, you’ll have black, thick and smooth-running oil flowing from

the sump that suggests it hasn’t been neglected for too long. One important aspect of this oil change is to replace the seal on the plug that locks the oil into the sump. The last thing you want is to be riding around with no lubrication occurring in your engine. Once you’ve relocated the plug, you can top-up your Defender with fresh oil - we’ve been using Ravenol 5W-30. The engine’s oil capacity is 9.5 litres, so you’ll need a couple of 5-litre bottles to fill her up. Obviously, you want to make sure you haven’t under- or overdone it as there are repercussions of both actions – the dipstick is your reference point here. This Ravenol oil is very good stuff, though, and the engine has certainly been running very cleanly and efficiently since the service. An easy way to look at servicing is by a checklist, because a lot of what it’s is about is simply checking the condition of various components and changing them if needs be.

When you step out the front door each day you may glance in the mirror to make sure you’re not looking like Ian Beale from his homeless days, but sometimes it’s worth giving yourself a thorough examination just to make sure everything is as it should be. And the same principle can be applied to your Land Rover. Your axles will need their respective differentials checking for oil, too. Release the oil plug in each differential and check the quality and level of the oil within. No action may be required on some inspections, but you want to have a nice clean oil swimming around in there. If you do need to pop a drop inside, you should fill the diff up until the oil comes seeping back out again. The diffs take a heavy gear oil, such as an EP90. Finally, we move on to the fuel filter. For this you’ll need to remove the offside rear tyre and locate the fuel filter housing to the right of the

14. Use a ratchet or similar tool to release the oil plug on the differential 15. Check the quality of the oil and top-up with a heavy gear oil, such as an EP90. Continue to fill until the oil starts to trickle out

Opening up the casing should reveal the fuel filter itself – if it doesn’t then either the fairies have come and nicked it or you’ll probably have already experienced a problem that’s brought it to your attention. Generally, the old filter will be in place and you can often release it by hand. If not, grab a clamping device or some grips to ease it free. The difficulty rating will vary depending on how long it’s been there. Lock the new one on and tighten back up and then prepare to learn a neat trick. If you start the ignition and pump the throttle to the floor five times in quick succession, the engine will fire up its self-bleed routine; a routine that lasts for about ten minutes. Once the hums and buzzes of the fuel lines dissipate then you’re clear to go. Hopefully this guide through a Td5 service will be useful to you and help you to carry out a basic service. Land Rover service kits are available from companies such as Rimmer Bros and Paddock Spares and they include all the major replacement filter parts you need in order to carry out the job on your very own driveway, saving you money and giving you some tuition on vehicle maintenance in the process. There are different levels of servicing on vehicles and some of the more major service intervals will require increased time, resources and patience, but a lot of it comes down to knowing and checking the condition of your vehicle regularly, from tyre pressures to brake lines. If you’re venturing further into the game by yourself, Ashley did warn us about a couple of possible problem points one can face on a Td5. ‘On the front of the cylinder head, where the electric plug fits to the injector harness, sometimes oil can wick past and along the cables which can mean you need a new harness,’ says Ashley. ‘If you pull the plug off the head and it’s full of oil, it’s more than likely that’ll be the solution. ‘Also keep an eye out for a wettish fuel look on the back of the cylinder head where the fuel lines come up at the back of the engine. This could be a sign of the fuel regulator leaking.’ The encouraging fact is that no matter what problem you face on your Land Rover, there will always be an enthusiast on-hand to offer you the advice you need to get the job done. Thanks to Ashley and the team at Ashley 4x4 in Staffordshire for running us through the Td5 service. If you need a place to get your Land Rover serviced, repaired or kitted out with new parts or accessories, give them a bell as they’ll only be too happy to help. The New Arrival

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

N

ormally, when there’s a new member in the family, it’s met with a joyful celebration of love and happiness, whether it be a new-born baby, or perhaps even a little patter of multiple tiny footsteps belonging to something with more than two legs.

Well at The Landy we’ve had a new inclusion to the gang, and seeing as we’re not allowed to add any pets to what effectively is already a zoo, we’ve got ourselves a new Land Rover. Only when I say ‘new’ I mean a 2006 Td5 Defender. The happiness rule still applies, though, in fact we’re all pretty ecstatic with the vehicle. Technically, the Land Rover belongs to Colin, our advertising manager, but

Established back in 1970, John Craddock Ltd. provides virtually every kind of Land Rover part or accessory you can imagine, all operating out of its base in Cannock

given how possessive some of the other members of our unit have been with the keys (I guess I’m in that category too) you’d begin to think they were the ones putting it to bed at night. Not that the poor thing has had much rest so far. It’s had enough rest already! At ten years old the Defender has only covered 45,000 miles and it’s one of the best-kept Defenders we’ve seen for a while – we can see why Colin handed over the monies for it. A wonderful County Station Wagon, finished in Epsom Green, it’s a Defender in every sense, and looks rather breathtaking in this attire. But while we could stand and stare at it for an eternity, the Defender, like us, has some work to do. Our aim is to see whether we can tweak a Defender to make it suitable for 2016, or in other words, to turn it into the kind of new Defender we wish we were going to get from Land Rover in (most likely) 2019. We want it still to be a Defender at heart; to still be able to do the things that a Defender should be able to do. But what we’re going to attempt to do is modernise it with various products and parts that we will cover through

monthly updates over the course of the next 12 months. It’ll be used as a bit of a test bed, with the idea being to experiment with some Defender accessories that you may already be considering yourself. We’ll review them so you can decide whether to let go of your hard-earned cash or not and, should you decide you want to, the decision shouldn’t leave you fuming down the phone at the manufacturer. Think of it as if choosing the most sensible brand of cereal in the morn-

ing, with The Landy in the background making sure its not the one that’ll upset you all day. And seeing as tyres are some of the most important items you’ll ever shop for on a Land Rover, we thought this represented a good starting point. Cooper Tires are a very popular brand of tyre in this industry, and with good reason. The Cooper Discoverer range is lauded by off-roaders, and play sites around the country are littered with vehicles donning

Above: Paul uses the machine to break the bead on the tyre and then carefully eases the fresh rubber onto the rim Below: Believe it or not, tyre fitting places exist that can’t balance Landy-sized rubberwear. It pays to deal with the specialists the instantly recogniseable Cooper inscription on their sidewalls. But while many of us know the capabilities of a Discoverer STT like the back of our bulkhead, we wanted a tyre that would give us accessible performance off-road, but one that would still have tarmac on its conscience for all of the everyday run-of-the-mill excursions we’d have to make. Enter the Cooper Discoverer AT3 – Cooper’s all-terrain option which is split 60/40 in terms of intended usage, with a slight favour towards tarmac. Sounds ideal. John Craddock’s at Cannock happens to be our local Cooper Tires stockist so we hopped on down in a thunder of Td5 harmonics eager to get some new wheels on the Defender. Paul was to be our happy spanner man on this occasion, although there wasn’t actually a single spanner used in the process. Off came the old – and now perished – tyres and we watched on as Paul lubed the new rubber around the five-spoke Boost alloys. Not everyone knows about this particular service John Craddock offers, as it’s quite easy to get sucked in by the huge amount of parts and accessories they stock for all models of Land Rover. If you fancy a brand new set of Cooper AT3s from Craddocks yourself, you’re looking at a respectable £94.80 per tyre. Assuming you don’t skimp on the spare, a full set of tyres and fitting is essentially going to cost you about £500. However, for the size of the tyre and for the immediate handling benefits, this is money well spent. We’re going to be keeping an eye on the AT3s over the next few months and Colin will

tion despite its independent suspension and, of course, that ground-breaking Terrain Response system that brought Land Rover into the 21st Century. It’s quite something. Add to that the vehicle’s practicality attributes and the fact that no other vehicle can tow as competently as a Discovery, and you’ll soon be licking your lips and reaching for your wallet. Oh, and compared to the Td5 and Tdi units before it, the 2.7-litre TdV6 engine makes the D3 feel like it’s powered by rockets. Nevertheless, a D3 is not something you should rush into purchasing. Wheel bearings and suspension components can prove troublesome,

but the compressor issues can be easily rectified by using an AMK unit as opposed to the stock Hitachi one. Turbos and engines can let go but often the most documented problems stem from vehicle neglect and owners not keeping them regularly serviced. Make sure there is a full service history and avoid buying a vehicle around the 95k-100k mark – chances are the cam belt needs doing and that requires the entire body to come off. If you can find a D3 that has been well maintained (and has had the cambelt changed already), then the Disco 3 could be perfect for you. It combines modern-day luxuries and tech with all the Discovery versatility. Brilliant.

Series I (1948-1958)

I

f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

I

n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s

item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985)

F

ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price… for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

P

ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family… or maybe the hidden beauty. You certainly won’t find any lack of love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion.

To mimic the civvy Series machines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with their military history and features. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978)

O

nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be a bit of a nightmare. Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial payloads if that’s the sort of thing

you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. The Series IIA and IIB are rare classics, but the military 101 is more common (though no cheaper). You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Pros: As a resto it’s a sound investment, some examples now MOT exempt, more desireable than SIII Cons: Bulkheads can rot with ease, check suspension leaves for seizing

£1000-£25,000 Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol, 2.25 4cyl diesel. 2.6 6cyl petrol produced until 1980. Stage One V8 used detuned version of the 3.5 V8 (‘79-‘85). Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership, still has the Series pedigree, parts still widely available Cons: Not as desireable as earlier Series models

£1600-£25,000 Versions: 88”. IIA (‘68-’72), III (‘72’84). 2.25 4cyl petrol engine.

Pros: Not like all the other Series Land Rovers out there, military background, uses lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Styling isn’t to everyone’s taste, can be pricey owing to their rarity

£3100-£20,000 Versions: Series IIA (‘62-’66), Series IIB (‘66-’72), 101 (‘72-’78). 2.6 6cyl petrol engines for IIA/IIB, 3.5 V8 petrol for 101.

Pros: Soundtrack, presence, exclusivity Cons: Fuel bill, fuel bill, parking conundrums... fuel bill

Defender (1983-2016)

T

he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition, while if you’re in the market for a Defender from the 200Tdi era onwards, expect to pay a premium for them now that production has been halted.

However, many early Defenders are running Discovery Tdi power units with genuine Defender 200Tdi units not as common as they were. The 300Tdi is slightly more refined, just as easy to work on, and there is also more of them about. The Td5 is one of Land Rover’s most reliable units, while the TDCi Puma engines bring a touch more economy and torque to proceedings.

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)

T

he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the Defender and Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land

Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy version of the later 300Tdi model, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches, wings and so on are very prone to rotting.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

F

ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have taken regular dips in the sea. Not all Disco 2s have a locking centre diff, but they do have traction control – which works just as well.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)

T

he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery Sport (2015-present)

B

rought in to replace the Freelander 2, this was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out substantial units of the baby Disco,

now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and for better or worse many people feel it’s more of a man’s car than the Evoque. For an affordable family car with a Land Rover badge, the SE Tech has all the right kit – and can be as practical as a daddy Disco.

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

A

s a general rule, we’d tell you to avoid the Freelander 1 at all costs, simply because no single version is without its hindrances. Still, if you insist on investing your hard-earned in such a bottomless pit, then we can at least advise. But while we can advise, we cannot tolerate you going anywhere near the 1.8 petrol. It’s a cow pat waiting to blow up in your face. Simple as.

The petrol V6 is pokey, but requires much coolant. The 2.0Di engine is pretty miserable and gutless, leaving the TD4 as the only real option that will let you keep your dignity intact. All the usual tips apply: make sure it has been regularly serviced and maintained to a high standard and you might end up with a very cheap route into Land Rover ownership. It’s not even that bad off-road…

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

M

ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

55

£600-£6700 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05).

Pros: Cheap Cons: Cheap for a reason

£3700-£31,000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

T

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s in good condition – look after it, as it

will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumbed to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. Good early Classics now fetch truly immense prices. But don’t despair – even a tidy example of the late fourdoor version can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)

M

any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)

C

ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out

for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the Landy you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present)

I

f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)

M

uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present)

T

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present)

W

hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job. That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

£14000-£48,000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Britpart performance springs are high quality, versatile and competitively priced - the right choice when replacing the old sagging original springs. Developed by one of the world’s top spring manufacturers these high quality, powder coated yellow springs have been designed with the needs of today’s Land Rover owners in mind. Britpart performance lifted springs have the added benefit of improving your vehicles approach and departure angles which in turn allows you to overcome more obstacles when off-roading. As Land Rovers are often working vehicles as well as the family car, uprated springs must offer the ability to carry loads, handle off-road terrain and provide a good ride on road. The progressive springs offer a compliant ride when lightly loaded, but firm up as the load increases.

Britpart yellow springs are designed for the enthusiast who wants a performance spring without having to raise the vehicle. They offer a firmer ride with less body roll, ideal for a vehicle with uprated performance or one used for carrying heavy loads. The springs are designed to offer full articulation off-road with a compliant ride. Developed by one of the world’s top spring manufacturers these high quality, powder coated yellow springs have been designed with the needs of today’s Land Rover owners in mind.

Britpart Performance 1” Lower Springs

Reduce the ride height of your Land Rover by 1” (25mm) by fitting these lowered springs. By lowering your vehicle it will help reduce body roll as well as giving your vehicle a more sporty squat stance. The springs are designed in line with the standard spring rate specification. Finished in powered coated orange paint.
