DELIVERY On sale in October • Three petrols, three diesels on offer • No manual option Three wheelbases available • Prices tipped to start from around £50,000 etails of the new Land Rover Defender have appeared early of the vehicle’s official launch, with pictures from a product presentation, apparently taken during an internal presentation, appearing on a forum.

The pictures are grainy but appear to show a set of Powerpoint slides from a product conference. They suggest that after a staggered launch the vehicle will come in three forms – 90, 110 and 130 – just like the fabled old model.

Despite the name, the 90 will have a wheelbase measuring 101.9”. The shortest will also be the tallest of the new Defenders – by half an inch.

According to the slides, the 110 will have a wheelbase of 119”, as will the 130. A slide shows side-on drawings of the three vehicles together, with the 130 looking to have a longer wheelbase than the 110 with only a touch more overhang at the rear.

There are more inconsistencies. In some slides the 130 seems to be 13.5” lengthier than the 110, and a rear overhang of this size would definitely make setting new standards of off-road ability difficult. A longer wheelbase seems the likelier reality.

When it will arrive is unclear, too.

There’s a slide that says we’ll see them for the 2022 model year, whilst another says August 2020.

What appears clear is that it will be the 110 version that sees the new Defender in. Going on sale in October this year – presumably after a global unveiling at the Frankfurt motor show – with the 90 following in March.

It also appears that there will be an incredible array of choices to make within the Defender range. It will be available

in five different trims – Standard, S, SE, HSE and X, with the latter a high-end launch model. There too will be a long list of options, as well as Capability, Interior, Exterior and Convenience option packs. Dealers will also offer accessories split under the Explorer, Adventure, Urban and Country headings.

There will be endless personalisation options, but no manual gearbox. The leaked information shows that automatic will be standard on all models.

This is sure to disappoint traditionalists, although it isn’t too surprising.

Don’t worry, traditionalist, as it seems all will come with four-wheel drive. Once the range is complete, it will be available with a choice of three petrol and three diesel units, too, with mild and plug-in hybrid options in the mix.

The D200 diesel is expected to be the best-seller – a 2.0-litre unit developing 200bhp and 317lbf.ft. There will also be a 240bhp version of the same engine, named the D240.

The diesel range topper is Land Rover’s six-cylinder D300 unit, whose 300bhp and 479lbf.ft offer unDefenderly performance. A 0-62 time of 7.4 seconds is quoted, although we don’t know if this is for the 90, 110 or 130.

If a Defender of that pace is a shock, brace for the petrol range. It starts with the 300bhp, 295lbf.ft P300, which displaces 2.0 litres – as does the internal combustion part of the P400e plug-in hybrid. The latter, which is already familiar from the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, is pegged with 404bhp and 295lbf.ft, though a torque boost is available to lift that to 476lbf.ft.

This means a 0-62 time of 5.9 seconds! This is matched by the 3.0-litre

P400. The mild hybrid engine, from the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, has 400bhp paired with 550lbf.ft.

You may have guessed that the new Defender won’t be basic like its forebearer. The entry-level Standard model will feature 18” alloys, LED headlamps, power-folding mirrors, eight-way powered seats and a 10” touchscreen, as well as a wide range of advanced safety features. The wheels grow to 20” as you climb the range, headlamps become matrix LED units with auto-dimming, seats gain internal climate control as well as premium leather and 18-way adjustment, and the audio options peak with a 740W Meridian surround system.

One way in which the Defender will remain faithful to the original is that it will be available with three-abreast front seating. The 90 will be offered in a 5 or 6-seat form and the 110 adding a 7-seat option, whilst the 130 will be an 8-seater as standard.

There’s no mention of price in the leaks, but there are descriptions of the typical buyers. The 90 targets a ‘young, affluent fun-seeking individual.’ The car itself is the ‘halo, image icon’ of the range, whereas the 110 is the ‘definitive Defender’ for ‘couples, self-employed adventurers,’ and the ‘premium explorer’ 130 is for ‘families, active lifestyle and travel.’ No farmer’s wagon in the range, then. Land Rover dealers we’ve spoken to say they’ve been told to expect an entry-level price of around £50,000 for the base vehicle, meaning it’s pricier than both its American and Japanese rivals.

So, it seems there’s ammunition to rattle some old school cages and whet the appetite, too. In other words, pretty much as expected, then.

Richards Chassis gives away 10,000th unit

Words: George Dove efenders are fantastic – but they’re not without fault. Possibly the biggest of all those foibles is that their chassis can often get a little bit rotten.

Hence why chassis replacement specialists, Richards Chassis, have recently surpassed their 10,000th order! ut, when the figures began to head this far north, they began to formulate

a plan to celebrate the new lease of life given to Defender one oh, oh oh oh.

They settled on a free, yes free chassis to the lucky winner who ordered online and received the fateful order number.

As the week began with orders at 9,995, the staff all eagerly waited until Gordon Learoyd booked a chassis for his 300Tdi 110. Gordon bought the lucky M reg Defender from a cattle farm a long time ago, to use as a tip runner when he was renovating a house. He

had experience with Land Rovers from his time in the RAF and he ended up keeping the lovingly nicknamed Dog Fender. It has since clocked 120,000 miles, and before he knew it, it was time for some TLC. Gordon rebuilt the engine and gearbox on the old dog and was considering repairing the chassis himself until the realisation that it was too far gone and needed replacing. And so began the quest to find a quality chassis manufacturer. Gordon told Richards Chassis that he did his research and discovered from multiple forums – and word of mouth – that their quality was second to none, therefore they were the only option for good old Dog Fender.

Understandably so, Gordon was absolutely chuffed with the chassis and is now planning on a little more work to update his beloved Dog Fender. This milestone was fortuitous for Gordon and his Landy, but it’s a sign of the good work done by Richards Chassis, too, to reach this milestone in the first place – and as director Alistair anks highlights, they’re only looking forward from this point.

‘It’s a stupendous achievement that we’ve got to this milestone, and we look forward to the next 10,000 and beyond to help save even more of these iconic vehicles.’

embers of the Green Lane Association recently took part in a Day of Action on a prominent Surrey byway. Illegal off-roading by a small number of bikers and 4x4 drivers has long been a problem in the county, and the GLASS volunteers were joined by representatives of the Trail Riders Fellowship, the Forestry Commission and the Mole Valley Rural Crime Unit as well as National Trust rangers, Surrey County Highways and Rights of Way Officers and police on both trail bikes and horseback.

They were also joined by a barbecue, allowing them to hand out more than seventy bacon sandwiches during the course of the day. Evidence that the way to a green laner’s heart is indeed through his or her stomach…

The event, which started as an idea suggested by GLASS Surrey Rep Stuart Boreham at an access committee meeting, gained traction when it was taken up by Surrey’s Rural Crimes policing unit as part of its county-wide ‘Dragnet’ operation. In the end, three full teams spent the day stationed on sites expected to have some of the heaviest motor vehicle traffic.

These were Frensham Common, Sheepwalk Lane and Wolverns Lane.

The idea was to try and engage positively with the lanes’ various user groups, rather than dishing out the nanny-state behaviour many of us have encountered. Readers who use public rights of way well may have ‘enjoyed’ the experience of being treated with suspicion, or indeed as downright criminals, by police officers on this kind of spot-check duty.

It would be fantastic to report that as a result of the day’s activities, a group of irresponsible 4x4 users was caught red-handed and the book was thrown at them in a very public manner – or even better if they had happened along,

stopped for a chat and ended up crossing over to the law-abiding side of the laning community. However, in a rather graphic illustration of how little use even the busiest green lanes actually get, the three locations saw a sum total of zero 4x4s all day.

There was a great deal of interest at the Frensham site, hosted by Gareth Jex, where a good many walkers and horse riders stopped to chat. Stuart himself hosted the group at Wolverns Lane, where they met and chatted with mainly mountain bikers and trail riders – however here, too, they didn’t see a single recreational 4x4 user.

The group stationed at Sheepwalk Lane, meanwhile, found it more or less completely deserted all day. This was something of a surprise, as it’s a popular route for more than just motor vehicle users, but it does illustrate the difficulty in nailing down the few criminals who abuse lanes by straying off the rights of way and treating adjacent woodlands and verges like playday sites. Having driven Wolverns and Sheepwalk Lane ourselves many times, we can confirm that they certainly have had a problem with illegal use – so while a highly visible day of action might not be the most

effective way to get the jump on vandals, it was certainly justified as a way of showing to Surrey’s public that 4x4 users are firmly on the side of the law.

‘Overall,’ reports Stuart, ‘I am confident of the following results. Relationships between the various user groups strengthened and developed. Very high ranking police officers on site for some or all of the day with resolutions to support byway use and put rural crime issues on the agenda. Great PR opportunities generated for each group present and across the media. Good numbers of bikers of all types engaged and byway use discussed, similarly large numbers of walkers. Plans made for further events including night-time sessions to actively pursue off-roaders who cause damage on a regular basis.’

Plans are already in place for another event next year, this time with just two locations and possibly on a Saturday afternoon rather than a Sunday morning.

Nonetheless, says Stuart, ‘we all left with positive vibes and lots of goodwill between us. Best of all, (we have) the assurance that the authorities are behind us in the cause of promoting great green lane use – and they know we all mean business.’

he Project Jay Preservation Group (PJPG) has announced that they will have a stand at the Classic Motor Show with Discovery this November. Now, the show may be sponsored by the Discovery TV channel, but it will be the Land Rover Discovery that will take centre stage on their stand.

The group’s mission is to get the Discovery 1 more notice as a classic.

To do this, their itinerary this year includes more than the big Land Rover shows, but more general classic car events such as the Lakes Classic Car Show, Rippon Classic Car Show and

the Leighton Hall Classic Car and Bike Show, too.

But, for the PJPG, being accepted into the November show at the NEC is a big step.

‘This is a very prestigious show,’ said Chairman Roy Preston. ‘We are delighted that the show’s organisers have chosen to allocate a stand to the PJPG. This adds further to the recognition that the Land Rover Discovery is a true classic in its own right.’

It’s been a busy year for the pre-production Discovery enthusiasts, who have had 13 pre-1993 models on their

stand at the Land Rover Legends show, plus three other club vehicles in the hangar exhibits.

The year will peak in October at the 30th birthday celebrations for the Discovery, with the local branch of the Discovery Owners Club organising celebrations in Plymouth on the Hoe where the original launch took place.

The PJPG are hoping for as many of the original cars to be there as possible, along with many early Discos.

Can I have a word...

ell, well, well. There was always a chance for this sort of incident to happen, but it’s the type of moment that still has the ability to surprise.

I’m referring to the leaked details surrounding the new Defender (which you can conveniently read about on page 3 of this month’s issue .

With Land Rover having dragged out the development of the new Defender and insisting on teasing the public with prototype vehicles for what now seems like an eternity, there was always a risk of an image or some information being revealed before Land Rover themselves intended it to be.

The result is actually quite a big reveal, following images of a number of slides in a presentation reaching the public domain and appearing to show indepth details of what the new Defender will be powered by, as well as some of its alledged configurations and specs.

Much of the information, if we’re honest, could have been predicted long before the leak. ut what I’d like to do now is quickly turn those potential negatives into positives.

Yes, the leaked info points to a lack of a manual gearbox being offered and prices are expected to be for the ‘affluent’ rather than the common man.

But if the information is to be believed, in the near future we will have a raft of new 90, 110 and even 130 Defenders finding their way out into the modern world, complete with modern refinement and modern road manners, whilst maintaining the pedigree, heritage and capabilities we’ve all grown up to love.

So, while I know it’ll never be the same as the old one, why not let us all just give the new kid a chance, eh?

On the Right Track

Our man in Somerset thinks an easy-to-access vehicular rights of way network could get more people out in the countryside One of the joys of being married to a professional photographer is the regular recceing of remote locations.

Sometimes this involves a hard slog on foot, but on other occasions my wife gets access to a private off-road track and we’re able to reach the location by car.

Naryrally, the latter is a lot better when we have our young children in tow. They’ll happily walk a few miles, but not at the fringes of the day. And the hike is often accompanied by no small amount of whinging, which is only temporarily suspended by the liberal application of Haribo.

Contrast that to the times we go location hunting in the car. The kids clamber aboard with glee and spend

the time peering wide-eyed from the window, pointing out animals, plants and trees and generally relishing being out in nature.

Even better, once we reach our destination, they’re full of beans.

They’ll leap from the car and happily run around for a few hours, their enthusiasm fanned by the promise of the drive back out of the forest when Mum finishes light metering or whatever it is she does on these occasions).

All of this makes me think – what if the UK had a network of vehicular rights of way that could be accessed easily and was suitable for use in even the softest of soft-roaders?

The routes could be colour-coded, like ski or mountain-biking runs: if

you have a crossover car, perhaps not even fitted with four-wheel drive, you go on the easy routes; if you have a 4x4 that doubles as your family hack, you can take the intermediate runs; and if you have a diehard mud-plugging hero like a modded-up Series III, you can follow the difficult routes.

Sure, it would cost a wodge of cash to set up. But look closely at the Forestry Commission land holdings scattered across the countryside and you’ll see no shortage of gravelled tracks that would fit the bill nicely.

You’d have to establish rules of the road and ensure the protection and preservation of natural landscapes.

Maybe you’d operate a licensing sys-

tem, like angling clubs: users apply for a licence to drive a particular route in exchange for a fee. If they break the rules or cause any damage, access is revoked and the fun’s over.

I don’t envisage the network replacing our existing green lanes, which have greatly diminished since the NERC Act 2006. What little we have left is too precious to lose. But some lanes could be incorporated into the new network, thereby preserving access for future generations.

It would boost local economies and just think of the positive effect on wellbeing: for people who struggle to access our great landscapes, or those who simply don’t like walking, biking or horse riding, this would be a wonderful alternative.

It’s just a thought. ut whether you have a shiny Evoque or a Simex-shod challenge machine, wouldn’t it be lovely to have a fully regulated and authorised way of exploring our country’s beautiful scenery on four wheels

The Light of the Cosmos The Cosmo Dual LED is one of several new lights recently brought to the market by Ironman. The 20W unit works as a spotlight on main beam and a floodlight on dip, using a pair of 10W high lux output Cree-XPL LEDs to create a spread of 6000K white light.

This imitates natural daylight, making it as relaxing as possible on the eyes.

The LEDs are contained in a heavy-duty die-cast alloy housing which Ironman says is ‘designed to

withstand hours of corrugations and extreme conditions’.

The unit also has a shockproof polycarbonate lens and stainless steel mounting bracket, and it’s rated to IP67 and IP69, meaning it has a dust-proof seal and can stand full submersion as well as blasts of water at high pressure.

There’s a wide range of other new LEDs on the way from Ironman too, including various sizes of driving lights, DRLs and work lamps.

initially Land Rover didn’t have high expectations for the model. Something must have worked, though, because before long the Vogue SE was also being made available in the UK. Setting itself apart from the regular rabble, the Vogue SE was equipped with air-conditioning, the ZF four-speed automatic gearbox, a power-slide sunroof, electric leather seats, additional soundproofing and a pinstripe coachline.

Significantly, the first versions also had American burr walnut incorporated into the doors, but not on the dashboard. Early Vogue SE models were also only available in Caspian Blue and Cypress Green.

Not all are the same, though, because before the 1989 MY changes came into play around 50 models were built, now classed as the ‘Phase One’ Vogue SEs

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott he Vogue SE variation of the Range Rover Classic is a beautiful one. But in many ways, we need to be thanking the Americans for its existence.

Back in the mid-1980s, electronic fuel injection had allowed Land Rover to meet North American environmental legislation and reintroduce it to the market.

In terms of trim levels, there was already a high-spec Vogue model in production, but there was demand in North America for something even more luxurious. Enter the Vogue SE, with the latter standing for Special Equipment.

The model was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1988 and

Fast-forward to December 2017 and Steve Bosworth became the owner of the Cypress Green Vogue SE Range Rover you see here, albeit the car was in a slightly different condition 18 months ago.

‘I had two Range Rovers previously and felt like I had unfinished business with the blue ‘Phase Two’ ogue SE I had before,’ says Steve. ‘When I saw this, I was just looking for a decent Range Rover that needed a little tarting up; something that would be a good project for me. I never really thought of it being anything special.’

The project quickly turned into a restoration and it was only then that Steve started to become aware of the fact this might not be any old Vogue SE. Paul Gilbert of Aston Lodge Engineering was the man in charge of the restoration, while the engine was rebuilt by John Walters of Car Gas in Fenton and many of the new panels were ‘Easy-On’ zintec-coated replacements provided by Froggatt’s of Macclesfield. ut it was Paul who began to take the vehicle apart and discovered the first clues that this could be a Phase One ogue SE. Firstly, Steve’s Range Rover has the LT230T transfer box, which was superseded by the chain-driven Borg Warner box when the 1989 MY ogue SE was launched in the October of 1988. Another feature that emerged only after the October update was the addition of the burr walnut on the dashboard, as well as on the door cards. Steve’s Range Rover only has it on the doors…

‘I hadn’t budgeted for an engine rebuild or the respraying of panels, but Land Rovers always find a way of needing more funds,’ smiles Steve. The truth is that every panel barring the bonnet, roof and scuttle was resprayed, but when it came to finding the right colour, Paul struggled to get the Rover version of Cypress Green to match correctly.

It was only when they sampled Jaguar’s version of Cypress Green that the old paintwork had a clear match.

From October 1988, more colour options were added and the Land Rover paint shop started to use their own version of Cypress Green. But Vogue SEs built before had to settle for a Jaguar hand-me-down.

Many of the indicators that tell us this is a genuine Phase One ogue SE would have been missed were it not for the fact Steve is a mechanical engineer by trade and is familiar with some of the coding frequently used in vehicle manufacturing.

‘There are markings in areas, such as ‘14E88’ behind the centre console, which indicates when that batch of parts was made,’ elaborates Steve. ‘I know from working at Bentley that in this instance those characters would mean

‘It’s not unusual for pieces to be manufactured a few weeks before they are assembled with the vehicle, which given the Heritage Certificate states that the car was completed on 17 August 1988, that would be more than feasible.’

The restoration itself was certainly an extensive one, with the rear floor being chopped out and a new crossmember being fitted, the front inner wings were changed and rear arches replaced, while this Vogue SE also received new footwells and rear quarter panels, with improved seals from Midlands-based Atkinson Bespoke Engineering.

This Vogue SE is now a very tidy machine. And while the refurbishment took more hours (and money) than anticipated, it’s a delightful machine that deserved to be given a new lease of life.

‘I’ve always loved Range Rovers and was lucky enough to have one at the age of 21 for a few years,’ continues Steve. ‘When I bought this, I was doing it more for me than anything else, but now knowing its history, it’s just an added bonus.’

A Classic Vogue SE is a wonderful machine. But with a bit of detective work and investigating, Steve now finds himself in an exclusive club, with the keys to a Vogue SE with added quirks, a captivating backstory and, most of all, a whole lot of appeal.

f you’re anything like me, the prospect of pizza is tantalising. Someone only has to say the word and it sends me off stargazing into another universe, where slices of pepperoni and lashings of hot roquito peppers start to orbit my head, leaving me stood dribbling like a Rottweiler on heat.

Place a smouldering box of freshly cooked stone-baked pizza on the bonnet of a Land Rover and the situation elevates to critical, like observing some captivating and taboo scene from the darker and wilder realms of the Internet.

I’m not the only one who likes pizza, either although potentially the only one who covets the cuisine to the above 4degree . And a fair few of the pizza lovers out there will be found among the Land Rover community. Take Charlie and Claire Hayzelden, for example.

‘I’ve always followed old Defenders,’ speaks Charlie, ‘and, well, we both really like pizza.’ ut rather than just liking crusty old Land Rovers as well as a stuffed crust, Charlie and Claire took the chance to combine the two passions when an opportunity arose a couple of years ago.

I

‘We had a chance to buy this Defender that had been used for cooking pizzas, but the guy hadn’t been doing so well,’ recalls Charlie. ‘We took it over under a different name and saw it as an extra job and a way of earning some extra money,’ adds Claire.

‘We didn’t want to just cook any old pizza, though, but instead make a good quality product,’ explains Claire.

Mission Impizzable was born and ever since the tail end of 2017, Charlie, Claire and Doris the Defender have been travelling around the country serving up pizza for punters at all sorts of venues and occasions.

‘We’ve attended fayres, weddings and even christenings, but also festivals and sporting events, too,’ says Claire. ‘Most events have been really busy for us and sometimes we’re turning out 120 pizzas in under two hours,’ continues Charlie.

Part of their success is keeping the menu simple, but also honing in on those top quality ingredients. As much of the pizza is homemade as possible, right down to the tomato sauce used on the bases.

I met Charlie and Claire down at one of the many Street Food Heroes events held at Tring in Hertfordshire and after gathering myself together from being stood in front of a Defender serving pizza out of its side, I was lucky enough to sample some of their scrumptious creations.

Those ingredients are packed with flavour and you can really taste the fact this isn’t just some generic pizza.

Charlie, Claire – and Doris – are able to serve up a delicious treat that’s impizzable to forget.

And they really wouldn’t be able to do it without the help from Doris. The previous owner had fitted the oven in the rear of Doris, sensibly realising that the weight of a pizza oven would be more manageable in a Defender than a Renault Clio, but it was Charlie and Claire who gave Doris the striking red paintjob and have taken Mission Impizzable to the next level.

However, in a twist of events, since the photographs were taken for this article, Charlie and Claire received news that their family is about to get that little bit bigger. With Claire now pregnant and parenthood on the horizon, running the pizza business would prove too difficult whilst juggling a new addition to the family.

Happily, however, Mission Impizzable lives on with its new owner Lisa, who happens to live just over in the next town from Charlie and Claire.

While this chapter draws to a close for Charlie and Claire, they can be proud of starting something special and will take many treasured memories away with them from their time running Mission Impizzable.

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Davanti magine how difficult it must be for a tyre manufacturer to bring a new all-terrain option to the market.

Not only are you trying to develop rubber capable of working on baking hot tarmac, but also mud, sand, grass, gravel, snow and ice. And then on top of that, you have to try and better everyone else’s efforts.

It sounds like a quest few would be willing to embark upon, but Davanti Tyres has decided to pick up the baton and delivered the Terratoura.

Davanti itself is a relative newcomer to the market, although you can be sure they’re taking this game seriously.

The company has already established a range of tyres, from rubber suited to small passenger cars, to their Wintoura winter tyre and now the Terrartoura.

Furthermore, their tyres are designed in Europe before being ridiculed to the most extreme and punishing of regimes right across the globe.

The Terratoura needs to excel in all environments. So not only has Davanti taken the Terratoura to the famous Millbrook Proving Ground for evaluation on the road and around the comprehensive off-road course, but the new all-terrain also proved itself in the 40-degree Mediterranean heat at Applus Idiada, located near arcelona.

Handling, braking and stability have all been scrutinised in both wet and dry conditions at this colossus of a venue to bring the Terratoura to the limits of what is possible for an all-terrain tyre – and if that wasn’t enough, Davanti also put the Terratoura through its paces in the Arctic Circle, over in Finland.

It’s the latter that has allowed the Terratoura to achieve the coveted Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake certification and essentially reaffirm that even in hostile and sub-zero temperatures, Davanti’s all-terrain tyre continues to work.

ut that’s just one of the Terratoura’s many attributes. Alongside its excellent winter performance, the tyre is constructed with a five-rib design, using two longitudinal grooves to disperse water and maintain traction in all conditions. The grooves on the shoulder with its ‘block edge’ design helps work through different surfaces, sustaining momentum whatever the terrain and shedding excess deposits to keep the tyre clean and working effectively.

Testing revealed the tread and its support bars to show promising results in longevity and minimising noise levels, while the carcass uses reinforced polyester cords, two wide steel belts and layers of nylon to build a tyre capable of withstanding the demands an all-terrain tyre will face.

To test the tyre ourselves, we were invited along to the East of England Land Rover Experience centre, where a trial was set up between the Davanti Terratoura and one of the industry’s best the FGoodrich All-Terrain. Using the same vehicles as a measure of control, the two tyres would compete head-to-head across the exact same course and route to allow drivers to compare characteristics.

Comprising of mud pools, rocky paths, side slopes, and sharp changes in elevation, the course had everything – but you know what, Davanti’s newcomer took it all in its tread.

Starting with a tricky descent on a challenging off-camber side slope, here the FG maintained relative control on the way down, but was prone to the odd wheel slipping, even if only to a minor degree. The Davanti

tyre didn’t slip once. Traction didn’t break, even when completing the route multiple times.

It was the same story on the more aggressive side slope and particularly towards the end of the section where the FG would raise its wheel and give a slight over-rotation until it found grip. The Terratoura would edge the composure stakes and even when trying to provoke the tyre to break traction on some of the steepest hill climbs, the tyre would minimise wheelspin, claw into the ground and drag the vehicle onwards and upwards.

Through the water and over rocks, the tyre never felt stressed or like it was being overworked, plus on inspection, once driving was complete, the Terratoura looked the cleaner of the two tyres, illustrating its proficiency in shifting crud from within its own tread. The Davanti Terratoura is a very capable tyre.

There’s no question it can hold its own off-road, and as it will be priced below some of the most premium offerings, Davanti can be very satisfied with what they have created. Now it’s just a matter of time to see if the longevity and durability can match the impressive performance.

The Terratoura all-terrain tyre is available now, initially in rim sizes 15”-17” and from 235mm to 265mm in width. Davanti will be introducing new sizes to the range up to 21” and 285mm in due course, however.

So, before you set about bolting on the next best thing in any catalogue, ask yourself honestly, do you really need it Do the benefits warrant its additional weight Will you use it And have you struggled previously because you didn’t have one I’m not for a moment suggesting that every vehicle should be left completely standard. Nor am I suggesting that all 4x4 accessories and equipment are unnecessary. What I am suggesting, however, is that very few 4x4 owners seem to appreciate that modifications

inevitably result in consequences. So it is important to evaluate the cost to benefit ratio before proceeding.

Over the past ten years leading 4x4 expeditions and tours, I have repeatedly been asked about various items of equipment whether they are necessary to have, or whether they are nice to have. So, I thought it would be timely to run through some of them, and offer my opinion based purely on the merits of experience.

These are findings stemming back to encounters on my tours and expeditions, and before we start, I would just like to place an emphasis on the fact travellers should seek good quality manufactured products, rather than cheap and cheerful junk.

As nice as they are to have, the reality is that very seldom is a winch the only, or the best, option for the job. Winches are expensive and heavy and, in the wrong hands, can be disastrous. esides the risk of accident and injury, plenty of inexperienced operators have cost themselves a battery. It can be just as effective to take a few strops and shackles instead – but make sure they are rated and certified for lifting.

Really Where, when and why do you intend crossing such deep water The biggest advantage of a raised air intake, and the real reason those in the know have them, is to provide a clean supply of cool, fresh air to the engine, and save their air filters from getting clogged with dust. ut then, it is always good practice to blow out your air filter after a day of dusty driving anyway.

Compressor

Following on from above, yes, a compressor is a great addition to clean your air filter. ut more importantly, it beats a foot pump for re-inflating your tyres after driving off-road and before getting

Roof tent

Once you’ve camped in a roof tent, you will never want to do it any other way.

But they are heavy and expensive.

That’s both expensive to buy in the first instance and expensive to run due to increased fuel consumption and ferry costs. My recommendation is that, if you are going to be using it regularly, then yes, it is a good purchase. But for one or two trips a year, perhaps it’s not going to be worthwhile.

Okay, so here I am a little biased in that, if you are going on a fully catered tour such as I provide, then no, there is no need for a fridge – unless you feel that cold beers will always overrule the outrageous cost.

However, if you are travelling solo, then a fridge-freezer is an excellent facility to have, notwithstanding the cost.

My advice in this case is to run it as a freezer and decant food into a coolbox as required. In that way, you get to carry more for longer. ut beware – not all portable fridge freezers are created equal. There are good reasons why the Engels and

National Luna’s of this world cost as much as they cost. Not only for their outstanding build quality and longevity, but also because of their very low current draw, which is important in the overlanding environment.

Underbody protection For it to be any good, it needs to be heavy duty. And that’s the problem – heavy. Why do people feel they must have underbody protection? Better to just watch where you are driving, surely esides adding significant extra weight, underbody protection plates restrict airflow, thereby reducing the

These cumbersome bash plates also tend to obscure everything that should be inspected each evening after a day’s driving. Seriously, give it a miss, and drive with care. It should not be difficult to look where you’re going.

Tyres

Good quality off-road specific tyres are not a luxury they are a necessity. And despite their apparent high cost, when one considers what they tolerate, and for how long, they actually represent very good value for money. Do not scrimp on tyres! Spend the money and get the best, you will be glad you did.

And in doing so, you negate the requirement for carrying a second spare.

Awning

Wow, some of these things defy belief, not just in cost, but in engineering achievement. There are some works of wonder out there, but are they worth the money and, more importantly, are they necessary? I guess this is a relative one that comes down to individual perspective and priority.

To my mind, a decent sun hat does the job just as well, but then I am accustomed to the sun and the heat – actually I thrive on it, having spent my first 20 years in the bushveld of Seth Efrika.

There is some great gear out there and, if only gravity wasn’t against us, it would be nice to benefit from the advantages of all of it, but sadly it just isn’t practical.

My departing advice is if you can possibly do without it, then do without it. If you are unsure, then do without it. Only if you are convinced that it is essential, should you succumb and add the weight to your vehicle.

Open Sesame

The Disco 3 can be a tricky truck, but of the issues you may face, fixing a tailgate might not be on your radar. That said, the solution can be reached in DIY fashion Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

here are certain Land Rovers that have more troublesome reputations than others – and the Discovry 3 is one of them.

A common problem being picked up at Marrion 4x4 is the tailgate on a Discovery 3 failing to open.

If you press the switch and you can hear it trying to work, it’s almost certainly the cable that has broken, like in the case shown here, or sometimes the actuator can prove to be the culprit.

But if when you press the switch and it makes no noise, it’s the switch or the wiring at fault.

On occasion, pressing and holding both the lock and unlock buttons will lure the tailgate into attempting to open. That can also be useful when diagnosing the fault, as if it opens, then you know the actuator and latch and lock are all good.

Still, the good news is that you can rectify this problem yourself and all with just a spare half an hour.

Follow the steps in this section and you’ll have a working tailgate in next to no time.

ot too long ago, restoring Range Rover Classics was a big business – and it still is in many cases.

But with the end of Defender production, businesses and enthusiasts alike have given the majestic Classics a bit of

breathing space and focused on the renovation of other Green Oval machines.

So before people start looking at Classics again, now is the moment to grab one prior to another rise in prices.

Of course, many low mileage Classics are now demanding strong money,

but look a little harder and you might find a bargain.

A firm favourite has to be the 4.2-litre V8 LSE, a long wheelbase Classic with added appeal – and legroom. We saw one at £5,500 recently, an ideal car to run or to consider for a future resto.

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then if you can source all the bits you need and come up with a finished example, it could well fetch mega bucks.

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 60-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as an investment and collector’s item.

A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and rather noisy.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top

of the bulkhead – we’re not sure it’s the full five stars on the latest Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance

that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub.

To mimic the civvy Series machines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover own-

£7000-£75000 Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

£3500-£35000 The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra thin layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the hood, but also underneath the body.

£2500-£25000 more durable five-bearing crank rather than the three-bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

£3500-£18000 ership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle.

It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

They’re a rare breed, so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of.

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted and it takes real commitment to stick with one.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit

of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition, because they’re starting to be a real

collector’s item. However, you’ll likely be searching far and wide for that pristine example.

This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were

Defender Tdi (1990-1998) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel.

If you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine.

Replacing blown units with a Disco

200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got.

After the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability.

Properly maintained, they can last for decades. Look around for one with

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done

properly before you take the plunge and purchase.

Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces.

The rear of the chassis has frequent-

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years.

Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its

days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders.

The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there for obscene money. If you like paying

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles.

With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

£8000-£35000 If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101 Forward Control. You’ll have a 8 engine harping away underneath you literally and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

£5000-£13000 still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 NA version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

£4000-£22000 full service history and you could find yourself a keeper.

Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after.

If you can find one, you’ll have a workhorse set for life.

£6000-£30000 ly been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences.

With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces. Bar the Tdi, the Td5 is up there with the best.

£10000-£80000 thousands of pounds for some bucket seats and additional leather, then go ahead. You will pay a premium for a Puma, especially since the end of production. ut if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£400-£5000 The 6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first.

Buy a Freelander 1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes. It just might not have the credibility of other Green Ovals...

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers.

But while you should turn your nose up at the Freelander 1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the

Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there... generally.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a 8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they

can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors and even untidy examples are starting to demand reasonable values.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good

working order, it’s still a sensational car to own, even today.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TD 8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for strong money. Notably, the petrol 8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further than the current Range Rover.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although

owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013) Much of the first-generation Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s Sport uses the same foundations as the L405.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and at-

tempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then

£2500-£21000 Do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

£5000-£60000 Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

£1500-£11000 and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 8 and you’ll get all the toys working or not .

Or you could try and find a limited edition anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

£3000-£30000 Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic and any issues you’re like to encounter will require deep pockets. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

£27000-£200000 alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with either a link to the royal family or the drugs trade. If you fit into some of these categories, then we envy you.

£4000-£30000 you need to love it for itself, because a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

Perhaps the only issue with the Sport – and it’s a big one – is that is shares all the problems the D3 experiences.

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. But no one can knock the performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the S R version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-2019) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses.

And given that the Evoque was, and still is, their fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner.

They don’t much like the ictoria Beckham connection, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route.

Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-present) Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger elar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger

vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality.

The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands.

It’s a vehicle designed to fill the gap between the smaller Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport. It’s a competent cruiser and has received numerous

accolades because of its particularly handsome exterior.

The Velar is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace, but has greater off-road ability than the aforementioned good for Green Oval enthusiasts and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Land Rover Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. And the Solihull outfit succeeded.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement

and a driving experience more suitable to families, including seating for seven, but all without a steep Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it

does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly before purchasing.

You can also buy a V8, but the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body,

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TD 6 engine although the thirsty 4.4 8

petrol was an option and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the

Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched a couple of years ago, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the utilitarian Land Rover into new territory.

Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, along with

introducing new engines, they’ve taken one huge step towards doing so.

Having driven the latest Discovery, we can confirm that it has lost none of its versatility and is comfortably the most capable Land Rover currently on sale today.

All of the engines have great flex-

Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats just , drives better than a

Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the next-generation Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval.

£38000-£85000 combine good economy with usable everyday performance.

The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the elar in due course.

Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...

£700-£10000 all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

£1500-£8000 especially towards the back end. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have been dipped into the sea. However, not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks, too.

£3500-£40000 timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

Rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too.

The 3.0 TD 6 and SD 6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

£34000-£80000 ibility and, along with its increasingly upmarket – and Range Rover-esque – interior, the new Disco 5 is one of the best machines to cover long distances in, whether that’s on the road or not.

Like most new Land Rovers, it’s easy to overspend on the options, but a well-specced Sd4 is all you really need.

£15000-£50000 It’s a more usable vehicle than the Range Rover Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the baby Range Rover.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech model and you could find yourself with a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

The Red Booster servo clutch kit makes your Defenders clutch much easier to press. This kit will make your driving a more pleasurable experience and reduce the effort you’d normally put in from driving your Defender. No more painful knees or feet when you are stuck in slow moving traffic!

Designed, engineered and manufactured to the highest standards, Red Booster is a mechanism system that makes it possible for all Defenders to have a servo assisted clutch. Working in a similar way to the braking system with a servo assisted system, it is mounted between the pedal and master cylinder and uses a vacuum from the inlet manifold to reduce the amount of pressure needed on the pedal to operate the clutch.

The left hand drive version - works similar to the right hand drive system.

The location of the clutch pedal of a left hand drive Defender is on the far corner of the vehicle and with hardly any space the entire unit had to be redesigned to fit without cutting and drilling your vehicle.
