T

his year’s Charity Land Rover Run was held across 2 to 4 June, with the destination being split over two locations, Poperinge and Kemmelberg.

The 36-strong convey congregated at the Battle of Britain Memorial in the early morning sunshine, with temperatures set to hit 36 degrees on route down to Belgium later that afternoon.

Some like it hot, but do Land Rovers?

Our support crew were kept busy at the start, with Jeff Mills and Jason Ashcroft replacing Ryan’s radiator in his Series II before we’d even set off. They then flushed it through again on arrival in Dover, before boarding the ferry. Top Gear – eat your heart out!

On arrival in Calais, the convoy re-grouped before setting off cross-country via St Omer and Cassell.

Four Land Rovers from our friends in Belgium all joined the convoy on route to Poperinge, our base for Friday and Saturday evenings.

Naturally, our support crew were kept busy with five Land Rovers encountering minor breakdowns (replacement coils, condensers and

rota arms), due to the hot early June temperatures. However, all but one Landy was soon fixed by Jeff and Jason, and they all arrived in Poperinge safely.

One misbehaving Series I had to be towed to its owner’s hotel, before being fixed early the next morning, before the Saturday road runs north of Poperinge

around the canals and locks of Lo. Our thanks again to Yves, Nele and family for preparing such a great route and the superb roadbook for us to enjoy again this year. You cannot beat a bit of local knowledge.

On the Sunday morning the convey headed to Kemmelberg for our annual

charity auction. We extend our thanks to Richard Beddall and Sue James for hosting our auction, with support from Mark Stringer and Emma.

Our target this year was to raise £4,000, but this has now been exceeded, with the current total for 2017 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation standing at £4,471. This brings our grand total past the £50,000 barrier, since the first Charity Land Rover Run was held eight years ago in May 2010. Well done to all concerned on meeting this terrific milestone.

Venues are now busily being checked for 2018, so do watch this space. And, it will already be a special year in 2018 as we celebrate Land Rover’s 70 anniversary.

h, Major, do come in. I’ve just put the kettle on but perhaps you’d rather a stiffener at this time of day? Jolly good. I need one anyway. Just been looking at the ex-

traordinary shenanigans those people at Land Rover are getting up to. Remember how they used to recruit people?

Put an ad in the local paper: ‘Chaps wanted, engineering skills required’.

Perfectly straightforward, what?

Simple interview, started the next

week, and you’re up to your elbows in swarf before lunch. Simple days. But now? Just look at this will you? Well, you hold it, my hands are shaking.

Land Rover’s tied up with the Gorillaz. Chaps can’t even spell. And they’re a ‘virtual band’. So they don’t even exist. Fat lot of good that would do the men when the enemy’s coming over the sandbags. So one of these band members, who apparently don’t exist, is called Noodle. I ask you. And he’s an ambassador for JLR, which I found confusing since my nephew told me JLR was a boy band.

So, yes yes, the point. The point is that Land Rover is now recruiting people and wants some of those young, new whizz-bang electronics and software engineering chaps and chapesses. And, instead of doing the sensible thing and putting an ad in the local paper, they’ve decided to go all modern and use a new Gorillaz

mixed reality app as a sort of innovative recruitment tool. No I don’t really understand that either.

But apparently they get these thrusting young people to look at this Gorillaz ape, sorry, app, and you can mess about online trying to put together a Jaguar i-Pace concept car. Which I can see might be fun and educational, so long as they then get down and do 20 press ups afterwards. But there’s a second part to the challenge.

Maybe just a small refresher, thank you. So then these clever young sparks have to start cracking code in the Alternative Reality Game format. Of course Marge and I find reality quite challenging enough without going off looking for alternatives, but what do we know. This app challenge thing makes them break the code on all sorts of puzzles that will test their lateral thinking, persistence, problem-solving skills and all the other sort of stuff we

used to solve by shoving them over the assault course.

No, I’m probably not explaining it very well. Just read that last bit, by Alex Heslop, who’s Head of Electrical Engineering there, while I go and mop up this spillage. There, at the bottom: ‘As the automotive industry transforms over the next decade, fuelled by software innovation, we have to attract the best talent and that requires a radical rethink of how we recruit.

Here we’ve found an engaging way to recruit a diverse talent pool in software systems, cyber systems, app development and graphics performance. It will be the first of its kind.’

ou may have noticed a little bit of a change near the front of The Landy this month... yes, nothing gets past you, does it! Unless of course you have no idea what I’m talking about, in which case you need to turn to page three (no gents, those days are long gone).

Anyway, now everyone is on the same page – quite literally – there’s a reason we’ve added a contents to The Landy and that is because we want to help YOU, the reader, to easily find the Land Rovers you care about most.

We try to make sure all the bases are covered and that all shapes and sizes of Land Rover are found within these sheets. Think of us as the galvanised chassis of Land Rover publications, providing everything you’ll need for the road ahead. Or the five-minute ‘break’ you take in the morning while you’re locked in a cubicle of the workplace toilets. You shouldn’t have to live like this, my friend.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, do give me a shout if you want to express your opinion on our new navigation device for browsing around the pages of The Landy. Hopefully, you can pinpoint your tipple more quickly and efficiently than ever before.

In the meantime, I’ll just say a quick word or twenty on our main feature of the issue, namely the Northumberland laning trip I went on in April.

The guys I took in the county with are stellar. And to see their military vehicles in action – each and every single one of them a well-kept and gorgeous machine – it was a true privilege. Plus, some of you will be happy to find out that their vehicles will be individually featured in the coming months, so we can all appreciate them just a little bit more.

The huge area houses the JLR Classic Legends, the classic vehicles for sale or restoration, as well as those in the company’s own collection.

All of this of course requires not just investment, it requires skilled people. Already the Classic Works area employs more than 80 specialists, many with traditional manufacturing skills. By the end of the year this number is expected to be about 120.

The whole scale of this operation is mind-boggling.

Velar Grows The Range Rover Velar range has just grown with the addition of the four-cylinder 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine. It’s badged as the P300, and we’d hazard a wild guess this has something to do with the fact that it’s a petrol engine with 300bhp.

There’s a useful 295lb ft of torque to back that up, meaning you won’t need to thrash it to get anywhere, although you can get to 62mph in just 5.7sec.

The engine, with its trick ceramic ball bearings in the twin-scroll turbocharger, is made at the Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, a site that cost a cool one billion quid.

Defender van Gogh Now it may well be fair to say that some of us at The Landy aren’t particularly cultural – the only culture we need is to learn further still about the inner workings of that LT77 gearbox or how to eke a little more performance out of that V8. That’s what we consider as cultural.

But then when a vehicle like this comes along, even we can appreciate its majesty. What a beautful design.

We’d like to say a bit more about it, but sadly we don’t know who owns it.

So, guess all we can do is sit back and marvel at one of the more tastefully decorated Land Rovers you’ll see.

ild boar are increasing in numbers in the woods of West Sussex, but in September they’ll be joined by some charging rhinos. At this point we then admit that we’re not talking about real ones, haha, just some off-road vehicles. But back in the day there were rhinos here, before the English Channel was formed. Fishing boats still dredge up rhino skeletons off the East Coast and only this year they found part of a rhino skeleton on a beach in Norfolk, from about 700,000 years ago.

Anyway, that’s a mild digression.

Where were we? Yes, we’re talking about looking after the rhinos we have left, and one way is a neat way because you don’t have to rattle a tin on a street corner, you can instead simply have a fun day out in your Land Rover.

The UK Rhino Charge will be at Hook Farm in West Sussex on 24 September. It’s a competitive offroad event, but you don’t need to be remotely hardcore to take part. To win the event it’s a mix of performance on the day and also how much money you raise for the charity Rhino Ark in Kenya. Rhino Ark’s work is strongly supported in Kenya by the government there, the Wildlife Service and the Forest Service, so this is a proper, effective charity making a real difference to our horny friends.

And you’ll want to win, because the person who wins the Victor Ludorum gets the very last place on the 2018 Kenyan Rhino Charge, and that’s quite a prize.

The organisers try to attract a large and varied entry, and then try to level the playing field so everyone gets a fair crack at it. It’s fun, but it has a serious purpose. Although you might struggle to remember that on the day, since last year’s entrants included Range Rovers, a Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 van and, the winning vehicle, a Suzuki Vitara. Time the Green Oval took that trophy don’t you think?

ince the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler JK in 2006, enthusiasts in Britain have wished the factory would combine the 2.8 CRD diesel engine with the Rubicon off-road spec package. It now does – but while there’s no apparent engineering barrier to doing so in right-hand drive, the company has confirmed that a Rubicon diesel won’t be available in the UK. The latest example of a diesel Rubicon to be shown in public appeared on the Jeep stand at Geneva in March, in the shape of a new special-edition version of the vehicle. Named the Recon, this gains a stronger front axle and

heavy-duty cast diff covers, adding yet more resilience to what is already a uniquely capable off-road vehicle. Further enhancements include a vented Power Dome bonnet, beneath which buyers on what we can still just about call mainland Europe will have a choice between the 2.8 CRD and 284bhp, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines.

Here in Britain, only the latter will be available, mated to a five-speed auto gearbox as standard.

Sales of the Rubicon Recon are now being rolled out across Jeep’s European markets. Prices are yet to be announced, however Jeep says it will be available in a wide range of paint colours.

Mini’s Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid will cost from £31,585 (before the government’s plug-in car grant) when it hits the road on 24 June. The 224bhp petrol-electric SUV claims 134.5mpg, 49g/km and a zero-emissions range of up to 25 miles.

As if to taunt British Wrangler fans yet further, Jeep’s stand at Geneva also featured this eye-catching modified Rubicon – diesel-engined, naturally.

The vehicle’s purpose was to demonstrate Mopar’s ONE off-road accessory pack. vehi Simply getting hold of vehicles has long been a problem own for would-be Wrangler owners in the UK – and with the demise of the Land Rover Defender, there are more of them than ever. Jeep has admitted that supply here needs to improve – and the company’s boss Michael Manly recently confirmed next-gen that ahead of the next-generation JL model starting production this autumn, the factory is gearing up for a near-100% rise in output.

The JL will come to the UK in 2018, with a double-cab pick-up version due to follow a year later. Specific model plans here remain unknown, however the US market is getting its first ever diesel – prompting optimism that when it comes here, the new Wrangler will at last be available with the right engine in Rubicon form.

Wran Prices for the new Wrangler are a long way from being finalised, however with better supply it is to be hoped that they will be more realistic than at present. The cheapest Wrangler currently costs £33,925 – almost double what it did when the current model was launched ten years ago.

Medium-sized seven-seat SUV promises modern tech and real off-road ability SSANGYONG’S OFF-ROAD HERITAGE continues to be writ large in its latest concept vehicle, the XAVL. A seven-seater based on 2015’s XAV concept, this will go into production in the near future.

Sitting between the current Korando and soon-to-be-replaced Rexton, Ssangyong says the XAVL will be ‘an authentic off-road SUV’.

It will be available in 1.5-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel forms, each with a choice of transmissions.

Inside, the vehicle promises a wide range of high-tech features.

Major functions can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, the passenger seats have a wi-fi hotspot and Link to Home technology allows you to warm up the oven, operate the central heating and so on from in the cabin.

Outside, the XAVL has a ‘tough, masculine exterior’. In the words

of Ssangyong boss Johng-sik Choi, it ‘takes its design inspiration from our iconic Korando model of the

Ssangyong has also revised its current Korando, with a new-look front end and a tough interior which can ‘handle the rough and tumble of family life.’

The vehicle now features LED running lights, 18” diamond-turned alloys and a more comfortable steering wheel.

Options include a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines and manual and auto gearboxes.

Four-wheel drive is on offer, as are several other safety features.

These updates will see the Korando through to the end of production; Ssangyong’s smallest SUV is due to be replaced two years from now.

Audi’s SQ7 is famous for the electrically powered 48-volt compressor allowing its 4.0 TDI engine to deliver 435bhp and 664lbf.ft from just 1000rpm. But the system also has a future in the company’s petrol-engined products – the first of which is the Q8 Sport Concept.

A four-seat coupe-SUV, this features a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine with the 48v changer in a mild hybrid system developing 470bhp and 516lbf.ft. As well as allowing a 4.7-seconds 0-62 time, Audi says this drivetrain gives the Q8 a range of more than 745 miles.

Audi says the TFSI-based hybrid system will be used on a wide range of its models in the future. The Q8, meanwhile, is strongly tipped to spawn a production model which will go on sale around a year from now.

Peugeot’s second-generation 3008 has been named Car of the Year 2017. The new SUV has already been ordered by almost 100,000 customers across Europe – however only a few choose the Hybrid4 model, which is the sole version with all-wheel drive.

Añejo to Perfection

Words: Graham Scott s you all know, ‘añejo’ means ‘aged’ in Spanish. Like a fine Rioja, or cut of beef or Tequila. Or, in this case, a Land Rover 110. It’s certainly a different take on the usual ‘restored’ Landy. It’s the work of Arkonik, the independent English Land Rover crew, who have been restoring, bespoking and delivering 90s and 110s mainly to the North American market for a while. In fact Arkonik is a bit chuffed with this one, as it’s the company’s 150th build. But

to actually see it you’ll need an odd combination of skills.

But first, what is it you’ll be seeing or not seeing? Arkonik works on Land Rovers to one of three levels: Origins restores a Defender to its original state; Editions adds new and improved features to a full restoration while Bespoke offer a custom-build commission service. Añejo certainly comes under that third heading.

It’s like a fusion of English and Mexican, which in culinary terms doesn’t sound wonderful – think roast beef tacos or guacamole with Victoria sponge

cake. But in the metal it works a treat.

All the vehicles the company restores are between 15 and 25 years old, and that matters as it affects import taxes and laws into different American states from Arkonik’s base in Somerset.

The base 110 looks like an English treat, with Sky Blue body, Chawton White roof with Front Runner roof rack above and Fire & Ice ebony sidesteps below. The Warn Zeon 12-S winch and bumper at the bows shows this can pull more than admiring glances, while the white steel rims and Cooper Discoverer AT3 tyres should

That Latin American theme comes to the fore inside, with those amazing seats. They’re covered in a bespoke Mexican blanket design with Earthy Brown leather trim, all to a Ruskin Design, errr, design. If you wanted to get behind the wheel of this one-off you’ll need to tick some boxes. Firstly, you’ll need to be in Vermont on 27-30 July. Oops, we’ve fallen at the first hurdle – never mind. But don’t worry, as the other criterion was that you have to be able to cook. Unfortunately, being an expert on your Kenwood microwave wouldn’t cut it here.

In a Top Gear meets Top Chef scenario, this is Arkonik’s Muddy Chef Challenge. You compete, you cook, you eat. It’s been going since 2008 and is now the biggest event of its kind in the world. Cooking is mandatory!

Home on the Range Eezier done There’s a big issue among drivers of electric vehicles you’re probably aware of – range anxiety. Driving around silently and scaring pedestrians as you creep up on them is all very well, but some electric cars run out of juice way too early. Owners of Green Oval vehicles can have a similar problem.

When you’re out there exploring bold new horizons there is often the creeping concern about where the next decent fuel station might be, and whether they’ll sell Haribos and 7 Up. (I once found myself in Burundi in Central Africa, eating

in a fairly remote place. A noisy American appeared, struggled that they spoke French there and turned to me and said: ‘Hey buddy, what’s French for Seven Up?’) Anyway, we digress. So sometimes you need to go the distance, particularly if the going is hard or indeed soft so your fuel consumption rises to a fairly alarming degree for hour after hour. Then there’s evaporation in the heat, thieves siphoning it off and all sorts of fun, but that’s a holiday in France for you.

suspects that whoever dreamed up the name may have been thinking of an ‘easy awning’ but somehow they seem to have run out of letters before they could get it finished.

Which is a shame. Although they certainly managed to get the awning itself properly finished and ready for sale. The Series 2000 vehicle awning measures 2x3m and is housed in a lightweight anodised aluminium casing that attaches to the side of your Land Rover.

You roll to a halt, pull out the awning, using the adjustable arms and support legs, and you’re good to go.

Cup Cap There are various ‘novelty’ baseball caps out there, some with amusing plastic dog poo stuck to the brims, others with cunning tubing that allows you to clip a drink to your hat and have a sip while walking along – assuming you can multitask. They don’t really come under the heading of classy.

Fast Starters

If your humble Land Rover is now a snorting competition beastie, then you may find that the starter motor is slightly less with the programme than the rest of the engine. It can be a bit like a teenager in the morning, reluctant to get going, turning over rather pathetically while trying to disobey everyone who is against this.

The solution, as least as far as your Land Rover is concerned, is a Powerlite Starter Motor. You can’t argue with the name (Achtung. Yes we can. The grammar Nazis) as the units produce more power and they’re smaller and lighter than the OE units.

Given their high-torque gear reduction ratios, they crank over

the engine at higher speeds with more power while, happily, using less current, thus giving the battery an easier time. There must be many Landy owners who may not have a competition vehicle, but who would really appreciate one of these on a freezing winter morning as they try to turn the engine over just before the school run.

Blowing Hard There are definitely times when you’ll want to pump up your tyre quickly, like three times faster than with a normal compressor. At a petrol station that’s no issue but if you’re out on an expedition with your Land Rover and you have to pump up the tyre while a lion leisurely approaches or that slithering in the grass gets nearer, then standing there for only 90 seconds sounds very good indeed.

been fitting the M1230 pads to taxis, Transits, Sprinters and other vehicles that have to carry weight and do a ton of miles. They even did a comparison test with OE brake materials.

They fitted the Mintex pads to four Ford Galaxy taxis and then let them do their thing – turning up late, moaning about the traffic and going down a bewildering array of side streets. In three of the four taxis the Mintex pads either met or exceeded the abilities and lifespan of the OE kit. Pretty impressive.

Braking News A Formula One car can brake from 124mph to zero in how much time?

Think about that speed, that’s quick.

The car needs 2.9sec. The driver will be subject to 5g while that happens.

The time taken for your Land Rover to stop from 124mph might also be under three seconds, depending on how tall the cliff was.

But the aim of course is not to go over that cliff, even if you’re not quite travelling at F1 pace, and lack the thousand-mile stare and chiselled jaw of an F1 driver. But you still need to stop promptly and frankly some older Land Rovers have a brake pedal with more

sponge than a Victorian sponge cake.

The answer, as Goodridge point out, is to fit one of their brake line kits.

They hardly need an introduction do they, this is more of a reminder. Those braided hoses, these days available in a riot of colours, are a firm fixture under so many performance bonnets.

And for your humble Landy they offer reliability and longevity as well as an absence of worrying sponginess at the pedal. Let’s be honest, a Land Rover interior is not exactly the last word in comfort over long distances. And chucking your pride and joy down some lanes can leave you sliding about in the seat, hands gripping the big wheel like Captain Haddock in a Force Nine off Tierra del Fuego.

So, to avoid the blistering barnacles, Exmoor Trim has come up with this rather racey little pair of Elite Sports Seats. ‘I still have my favourite toy car today – only now I have real ones too’

From the humble beginnings of a 200Tdi Discovery, this is Richard Johnstone’s tale of transformation of his everyday Land Rover into what the DVLA consider to be a brand new machine that is as awe-inspiring off-road as it is to look at

developed a passion for Land Rovers from the age of 14, although I guess some would argue it was even earlier than that. I still have my favourite toy car today that I used to push around the living room carpet – my trusty Defender – only now I have real ones too.

The first vehicle I owned was a 1991 Land Rover Discovery 200Tdi. Not a bad starting point for my first full-scale Green Oval, especially as I was the second owner from new. It had just 35,000 miles on the clock and came with full Land Rover service history. Most would probably agree there was room for im-

provement, however – which is why it’s now been rebuilt into a 100” Tomcat.

I bought the five-door seven-seat Discovery to get around for work (when I was contracting on farms) and weekend outings laning or at pay and play sites. The Discovery had modifications even then, with five-bar tread plates on the door bottoms, rock sliders and heavy-duty bumpers. I also upgraded the LT77 gearbox for an R380.

Unfortunately the wheelarch had a rot hole (shock) next to the rear seatbelt and, being too busy with work to fix it, the vehicle was parked up. The plan was to repair it and keep it for

off-road days and competitions. The Tomcat seed was sown.

I emailed Paul at Tomcat Motorsport who gave me some options to think about. Then a meeting was set up and off to Lincoln I went. It wasn’t long after that meeting that the stripping of the old body began, removing everything in sight to leave the bare chassis and axles.

The rolling chassis was taken up to Tomcat for work to get underway on building the skeleton. Meanwhile the trusty 200Tdi unit was checked over, and the timing belt and tensioners were changed, along with any wearing

parts. The R380 gearbox was also given the once over.

The plan was to build the 100” Tomcat with radiator in the rear and a full-size AlliSport intercooler in the front. We wanted to move the engine back behind the front axle, too, allowing us to fit a concealed winch in the chassis so the approach angle remained unaffected. Extra lighting has been built into the lip on the roof air duct using an LED light bar and the rear of the Discovery chassis was chopped off and a Defender crossmember added to give us a better departure angle.

by Fox, and Superpro bushes fitted all the way round to give a nice ride and great articulation.

The Detroit Truetrac limited-slip differentials were added when the axles still drove the Discovery, so they’ve been left in for the Tomcat, too. I did have them sent off for a once-over by Ashcrofts before being bolted back to the nicely stripped and recoated axles.

Paul fabricated a removable tow hitch in case the Tomcat would need a tow at any point. I’d like to think it will be me lending a hand to others, but you have to be prepared for these matters.

AlliSport fabricated a fuel tank for this project, which will sit in the rear under the radiator. Also located in the back are twin Optima batteries controlled by a T-Max split charge system, with a hat-tip to JGS 4X4, while the spare wheel and hi-lift jack are also tucked away in the rear.

Inside, two woven carbonfibre adjustable bucket seats provide somewhere for the driver and navigator to dwell. The dials are from a Td5 Defender, with LED NAS-spec lights and indicators. In addition, a GPS speedo and compass has been installed in the centre of the dash. Handy if I’m fighting an OS map in my cabin at any point.

been changed thanks to James at JGS 4x4, who kindly supplied all the parts.

My Mach Five rims were silver so they were repainted and a set of Cooper STT tyres were slipped around them.

Before I knew it, the call for the first fitting came around, so I trundled up to Tomcat and sat in the vehicle for the first time while Paul measured me for

the driver’s seat. Once that was sorted, the next question was, ‘Where would you like the gearstick?’ I held my left arm out with my hand hovering somewhere faintly resembling the middle of the cabin, and said, ‘There please!’

Once the first fittings were done, the vehicle was stripped ready for painting. Having colour-co-ordinated

the vehicle in black and orange, the final build could begin. Lots of careful planning was put into the build, and as a lot of this project was new ground to the Tomcat team, we wanted to get it right.

annually on the Mac 4x4 Challenge to see code boards. It’s the same with the extra high-level reverse lights connected to the reverse switch, as well as a push switch on the dash. The reversing camera is definitely something I’ve added to the original 1991 truck I used to drive - looking for code boards in the forest at night isn’t so bad now.

Trying to converse with your co-driver in a cab with no sound deadening is fine – at least when using the rally communications unit, which is hard-wired between the two passengers, as is the alarm system.

A Brantz trip computer is also wired into the dash in front of the co-driver so tulip diagrams are easily calculated.

There’s a first aid kit on a push button fastening behind the navigator’s seat, with various storage nets running down the transmission tunnel and even a cup holder, too.

With the vehicle complete, there was just the web of red tape to contend with. The IVA test day came and the DVLA denied the use of the old chassis number and registration details as the car was made up of all new or reconditioned parts.

So, in a turn up for the books, the old Discovery was declared scrapped and a new vehicle registration form was handed to me to fill out. I already had the personalised registration plate on retention so the choice to have a new 15 reg was binned and the personalised reg was put on instead. It’s nice not having to worry about MoTs till 2018 too!

It’s quite amazing what a small rust hole can drive you to.

Anyway, forget about all that dismal stuff. While you’re lying there trying to get to sleep at night having been demoted to the living room sofa, you can come and talk to me about manual gearboxes. Not literally, of course, because that would be weird.

Moving on, a manual gearbox is a good type of manual, the type you’re happy to have in your life. They are simple in nature and often give you a far more engaging driving experience than any automatic transmission. We like manuals in this context. But some

ause. Breathe. Don’t panic. I’m not about to chat to you about a bloody instruction manual, akin to the type of loathsome literature you (are supposed to) flick through shortly after having turned up back on your drive, inundated with Sweden’s finest flat-pack furniture questionably protruding from the rear of your Land Rover.

You just know you’re moments away from emitting a blue cloud of lexis, also as foul as the useless instruction booklet you’ve now set fire to. Don’t forget the domestic friction with your partner, too, that has now descended

Andrew Bombek has, at present, five P38 Range Rovers. Yes - five. That could be a little alarming for some, you know, what with P38s having such a fantastic reputation for being undeniably troublesome. Andrew doesn’t care, though. He’ll happily concede that some people think he is mad, but he likes them and he likes them more with a manual gearbox.

Above: Land Rovers have a higher chance than most vehicles of possessing a colourful history, and this particular P38 has clearly done some globetrotting in its time. Proof of its time with Vehicle Operations and as a vehicle registered in the Falkland Islands to find many about now. The majority of the P38s Andrew owns, however, are equipped with a stick shift. The one you see here first came to be in Andrew’s ownership last November.

‘The manual gearbox, that’s what hooked me initially,’ explains Andrew.

‘It was the first thing about it; the rarity of these machines.’

However, there is a lot more to this Range Rover than just a straightforward DIY transmission. At least allegedly there could be.

‘According to bits of paperwork I have, the vehicle is shown as having possibly belonged to, or certainly been used by, a wing commander whilst stationed in the Falklands,’ says Andrew.

‘I imagine it would have been used to drive around the island, carrying the higher-ranking officers. It was allegedly given an ‘F’ reg. number plate,

signalling its Falklands duties and was serviced by Coventry Land Rover and the Vehicle Operations team.’

The Range Rover is a factory manual version in standard SE trim with the 4.0-litre V8 unit perched at the helm.

At present, the bull bar is an unknown quantity in terms of whether it was a factory-fitted extra or something a previous owner retrofit to the vehicle at a later stage.

Andrew says ‘I just picked up another one.’ He’s on about manual P38s, not bull bars. This one came from Edinburgh, but the one we’re showing you here is arguably Andrew’s favourite.

‘It’s the silver blue,’ he states. ‘It’s my favourite colour out of them all. She’s a very pretty colour. I couldn’t tell you what attracts me to them, when the opportunity comes up I just can’t help but go for them.’

‘They look a lot closer to the original, before the fat L322 came in. I think they age well and they’re a usable classic too. The value hit rock bottom in the last couple of years and now they are appreciating assets.’

Whether you would personally have a manual P38 – or even a P38 at all – is a conundrum only you can answer. But there is no doubting it is an unusual sight; a point Andrew makes very well.

‘As with all vehicles of this ilk, you would normally have an auto ‘box, if you imagine your Jaguars, Mercedes’ and so on,’ claims Andrew. ‘I picked another up, before Christmas, with the owner of that particular garage not having seen one in over ten years. Then someone else who came to see another one of mine; he actually had a factory manual version, but he hadn’t seen one in over 14 years of owning his.’

As for Andrew’s collection of P38s, the pretty in blue silver one we have here is fascinating – the idea of it being used over in the Falklands, serving MoD duties in a whole different manner to what its brothers, the Series Land Rovers, would have done before it.

With the actual conflict itself back in 1982, this Range Rover would never have seen frontline action, in fact it wasn’t even a twinkle in the Solihull factory’s eye. But with many territories around the world, the MoD uses all sorts of vehicles in all sorts of destinations. And that includes rare P38 Range Rovers with a manual gearbox.

f someone said to you they have the perfect getaway vehicle, you’d be forgiven for conjuring up images of them dressed in black and white stripe pyjamas, walking out the back door of your local bank whilst carrying a brown sack over their shoulder and a dollar sign conveniently placed on its exterior. But then waiting outside, you’d expect to an automobile with traits of pace, a big engine, sleek looks and something that presumably provides hope to our villain that suggests he may ‘get away’ with this atrocity, even if said person is dressed like a gimp.

But Land Rovers (of old) certainly don’t exude high performance thrills and lustrous design lines. So maybe your friend didn’t mean a getaway vehicle for bank jobs then?

‘The concept was born out of Dan not being able to drive a lorry or tow over a certain weight due to his age and the newer licence laws, but he would need something to attend the shows in and camp over in,’ says Russ.

‘We are both hard and fast Land Rover nuts and Dan really didn’t fancy having to use a VW Transporter or anything like that, and he said, “We must be able to come up with something better?”

So we used the Defender as a platform and went from there.

‘The one criterion I felt was vital was that it all needed to be light. Some setups are so big and cumbersome, you know, and no disrespect, but sometimes they aren’t built with ladies in mind either. With our set-up, anyone can put it up.’

But that was prior to Russ imposing his creative plans onto the machine. Inside there are limited edition Land Rover seats in the front, while an Alcantara headlining adds luxury to an otherwise usually basic cabin.

There are other mods on the truck, too, with two leisure batteries and a 2000W inverter run through a T-Max split charge system. The EGR valve has been removed, the Td5’s ECU remapped and the exhaust has been de-catted as well. So maybe it could be used for the bank job after all.

A highlight, however, must be the floating roof rack that makes no contact with the Defender’s top. It’s not the work of magic, but it is the work of the in-house team at Gloucester Landrover. The dual ladders on the rear are aesthetically pleasing, too, plus it means you can always get an extra pair of hands to help you out on the tent if really needed.

And if you look closely at the body of the Defender, you’ll see they’ve used the ever-popular Raptor lining treatment from U-Pol. Only now you can get it in colours that look brilliant, just like this heritage-inspired pastel green exterior. A picture of a Defender with protection to match.

Speaking of protection, as you’d expect from a vehicle owned by the creators of the Defender Defender

device, this has been installed with their very best technology, which has recently been approved by the Police and is actively recommended to Land Rover owners by them and the NFU. It’s at this moment I should explain that you could have a vehicle like this too. The team provides a rental service, where you could take (just to be clear we mean borrow, you villain) one of their getaway vehicles and head out to the Wye Valley, perhaps visiting Hay-on-Wye and Hay Bluff along the way, or heading further afield on one of their provided green lane routes, exploring the likes of the Salisbury Plains or the Brecon Beacons. The team is equally happy to prepare and transform any 4x4 into ‘The Getaway’.

‘The system we have fits any 4x4 now, as we’ve developed our own range of fittings,’ reveals Russ. ‘We had a really good Three Counties show and lots of people were wanting to buy the Foxwing awning and roof tent, but some wanted a bit more comfort out of the car they were driving. So in the near future, we’ll have Discovery 2s and 3s available for rentals too.

the May Bank Holiday, it’s on the South Coast and the kids grew up there, as I used to do a lot of sailing down that way,’ continues Russ, ‘But there is very little to no cars in the village.’

‘Anyway, Dan said he goes down there and the campsite he had to get to meant heading into the village, and he stopped at this little shop that does sandwiches. By the time he came out, people had surrounded the vehicle and were all taking pictures of it! And again at the campsite! It does create a general stir this truck,’ chuckles Russ.

This September the Major’s Memorial Trial at Eastnor Castle returns, but there are a few differences this time around – meaning you, or your offspring, could be involved in the action of one of the year’s biggest competitions

T

he Major’s is widely known throughout the CCVT fraternity as the competition to enter each year. Teams of three have to be nominated by their clubs to enter as, historically, the Major’s Memorial Trial brings together the cream of the competition drivers.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Midland Rover Owner’s Club, this year the trial is being laid out by Clerks of Courses Richard Rowley, David Gregory and Adrian Gregory (no relation!), all highly experienced MROC CCVT drivers. It promises to be as interesting and challenging as ever, with sections planned for Eastnor’s Ridgeway and Hospital Woods – will your Land Rover be claimed as a casualty?

The trial started in 1969 as a result of comments overheard by Major Ben Hervey-Bathurst (the land owner and then Midland Rover Owners’ Club President) who was presenting prizes at a competition event in Eastnor. The ground had been rather dry and ‘the trial was too easy and not challenging enough for the best drivers’.

The Major issued a challenge to all clubs to bring their best drivers and return in October to see if the ground was still too easy. He laid the first trial out himself, setting a testing course across varying ground with the aim to pit himself against the cream of Britain’s Land Rover drivers. He donated

the much-coveted Rose Bowl and the Major’s Trial was born.

But bringing us up to the present day, probably the most interesting and debate-provoking piece of news this year is that there are two new forms of entry being allowed, as part of an ALRC two-year trial.

Samantha Miller, Chair of the MROC, has made her feelings clear on what this could mean for MROC and other Land Rover clubs alike.

‘This is an exciting time for the MROC as we introduce, encourage and support young unlicensed drivers within both RTV and CCVT competitions.

2017 will be the first year we allow both young drivers and Q Class to compete within the Major’s, one of the most challenging events of the year. We may not see any changes after the two-year trial period as it may not become a permanent class for trials, but at least we can say we tried it.’

So is Q Class the way forward? Well, over the last few years, clubs have seen falling membership in some types of competition, resulting in concerns about the viability of club events due to the land and other costs involved.

Discussions were held about the need to allow vehicles that are not fully ALRC compliant to be able to enter some club events at certain levels.

We needed a solution, and a way in which prospective new members could compete in their existing Land Rover vehicle, even if it didn’t comply with the existing technical regulations (although in all cases there must be compliance with the current MSA Year Book).

So here we are, a new Land Rover-based class has been introduced, and with it a chance to assess the exact

nature of the vehicles involved and their effect on both the competition and new membership benefits.

Simone Birch is the ALRC Secretary and said, ‘The trial will run until the end of December 2018, with member clubs able to choose whether or not to allow Q Class entries in their events. Midland ROC have chosen to allow Q Class entry to the Major’s Memorial Trial this year so it will be very interesting to see how this affects the entries.’

Hopefully, by the time the trial has concluded, the ALRC will have a better picture as to which vehicles the majority of competitors are entering events with, so they can be assessed and various regulations can be altered for a more positive and sustainable future.

Richard Rowley, one of the Clerks of Course for the Major’s this year, said: ‘Sure, the Major’s is supposed to be one of the most competitive events on the calendar. But we feel it’s necessary to give junior drivers an opportunity as, in many other forms of motorsport, young drivers are accepted.

‘As for Q Class, hopefully it will attract a wider audience of drivers and, as a consequence, benefit both this event and the sport in general.’

In order to encourage the up and coming generation, young drivers aged between 15 and 18 years of age, who have competed in TYRO, RTV and CCVT with their own clubs, are being allowed to enter as part of a team.

There are conditions to be met, though – including the requirement

to supply proof in the form of an official club logbook or similar, which confirms their driving experience and the progression they have made through previous TYRO, RTV and CCV trials.

The cost for entry is the usual £135 per team, with booking forms available to download from the website, www.mroc.co.uk, along with the SR’s.

Booking closes 31 August.

If you’re reading this as a teenager and know you go out there every Sunday and give your dad a good hiding in front of his mates with the way you whip round a trials course, maybe it’s time you show your skills on the grandest of stages? Either way, this could be a major win for you – and a major boost for the sport.

Land Rover Defender 6x6 HC Conversion

The Defender HC Tandem 6x6 Walking Beam (TWB) suspension upgrade consists of a tandem axle that can be quickly installed on to donor chassis, converting the rear axle into a powered tandem walking beam suspension. This conversion vastly improves the overall on and off road performance of the standard 110 Defender vehicle providing increased payload capacity by as much as one and a half times, combining increased dynamics stability and overall braking performance. Military Precision

Northumberland offers up green lanes on a par with some of the best off-road routes in the world. Which is why when you visit the county you’ll want to do things properly, like this little squadron of explorers

The beating of a helicopter’s blades grows louder and louder in my ears, filling the air, before the unmistakable sound of Noel Gallagher’s lead guitar bursts into my bedroom and, before I know it, Morning Glory is in full swing.

I’ll try and bring some context to the words you’ve just read, though, and attempt to divert you away from the image of me with various issues one may experience in the early hours. It’s Saturday 8 April and I’m waking up in the sleepy Midlands at such an hour so that I can be in Northumberland for 9am.

Specifically, I need to be at a lay-by on the A697 opposite the Heighley Gate Garden Centre, just north of Morpeth, in order to rendezvous with my platoon for the day’s reconnaissance mission – namely the exploration of the byways of Northumberland.

Pace is brisk with traffic thin, and my arrival is greeted with the wonderful sight of military Land Rovers – and one

civilian 110 – all lined up and beautifully presented, ready for the day’s action.

I’ve been suitably drilled (not like that) prior to my enrolment onto this most delicate of assignments, being instructed that I will be well catered for and need only bring some decent weather with me. I’d like to think I haven’t disappointed. Temperatures push

20˚C and by my recollection it’s the best day of the year so far - in more ways than one.

Moments before we embark on our day’s recce, I meet with personnel and the drivers of each unit. Colonel Godward had been my contact in the weeks before my link up with the squadron and he will be heading our

convoy in an R-WMIK Defender.

Lieutenant Bailey, aka Trevor, will be rolling out in his restored Lightweight, Major Wood is piloting his ex-Cyprus Wolf 90 and also responds to the name Wayne, while Captain Scott Connal has the joyous task of ferrying Cadet Trott for the day in his ex-military Hard Top 90. Oh, and there is some

bloke called Shaun with his civvie 110 too. Only joking, Shaun is a top guy and has since joined the ranks with a Wolf 90 of his own.

This really will be a day of reconnaissance for some of the troops, though, with my captain, or Scottie as he tells me to call him, new to the green lanes of Northumberland.

37 ‘This is only my second time out with my 90,’ says Scott. ‘The first was in February in the Lake District. I wasn’t going to do anything like this originally, I was a bit precious with it and had planned for it only to be used for road driving.’

How things can change. Northumberland will provide a test for the 90, but as the group concurs later on, the type of lanes on offer here are non-damaging and instead encourage the appreciation of your surroundings.

We make our advance through the market town of Morpeth before engaging with our first lane. If all lanes are going to be like this today, then I’ll

quite happily stay in Northumberland and never return to the Midlands.

Rocky in nature, but nothing a standard Land Rover can’t breeze, we spiral down to the side of a river and wait for the Colonel’s signal to encroach into the bubbling stream. ‘Proceed.’

In single file the vehicles tip-toe their way through, climbing up some minor rock steps and twisting round a hairpin to head back out of the little valley. In winter it could be a raging torrent but on the finest of spring days it’s serene.

Captain Scottie is proving to be a character, and his enthusiasm is clear.

‘Now I love cars, I’ve got a nice car, an Audi, but when I get into this…’

says Scottie turning to me with a grin as wide as the Tees estuary. ‘Somehow it always puts a smile on my face when we’re in a military convoy – you do get some looks!’

There’s another reason why Scottie loves his 90 so much. For starters, he was in the military previously, just like his 1987 standard FFR 90. In fact, his 90 went into service the year before Scottie and they served in the same unit together. Forgive me for a moment, because I did say this 90 is standard – and it’s not.

Smalls Progress People have carried washing machines on their backs to complete the London Marathon and carried fridges round Ireland on their backs, but anyone with a Green Oval clearly has more sense. However, packing light is a virtue and that means taking few clothes when you head off on a trip abroad. Which means either finding launderettes, which isn’t always easy in the Sahara – they’re usually either all full or you won’t have the right change – or your clothes smell and people avoid you.

This here is actually a rather neat solution, not least because it solves one problem while also solving several others. The Laundreez (Jeez I loathe these American names) is simply a dry bag with a screw plug and a mesh bag.You put the clothes into the mesh bag, which goes into the dry bag, then you add detergent.

You roll and clip sealed the top, pour water into the bag and screw in the plug cap. Shake, rattle and roll baby.

Leave to stand for a bit, undo plug, empty water (away from any water source), refill and rinse again and then you’re done.You can whirl the mesh bag around with the wet clothes in like you’re playing air guitar and then you can hang everything out to dry. It’s pretty easy and it works.

But that’s not really the clever part because now you have a dry bag you can use to keep documents or whatever dry if you’re in wet conditions, plus you have a mesh bag to use for carrying other things. The PVC dry bag also makes a great cool bag with some ice for the essential stubbies.

TRED and Tested The whole point of going off-road is that you do, in fact, go off the road.

Which is great, right up until you really rather wish there was bitumen under your wheels. When you get that sinking feeling, followed by a whole lot of wheelspin followed by any movement being in a down rather than a forward direction.

Land Rover sinks. Heart sinks.

At that point you really need to start digging and then find something to throw under the wheels – sand ladders, small children, branches, whatever is to hand. But,

should you find yourself out of any of those useful assists then you need not despair if you have had the foresight to have with you some TRED Pros.

40 steering fitted, making this one friendlier 90 to operate. Imagine a rifle with a cushion behind it for extra comfort on the recoil and you get the drift.

‘They have a different look and feel and of course the vehicles are veterans themselves!’ enthuses Scottie. ‘The reaction to them; people are so complimentary towards them and sometimes the military registrations plates get recognised and people come up to you and say, “That was in my unit!” It can be a real trip down memory lane for them.’

Today’s traversing will definitely live on in memory. It’s not only the lanes that provide an experience to treasure, but the villages and hamlets you pass through and the sweeping, wonderful roads you use along the way.

Rothbury, Snitter and Netherton are all despatched before a quite incredible lunchtime halt. I thought I would be in good hands, but the spread on offer is truly remarkable. Not only has Major Wood remembered the pork pies (so good), and Lieutenant Bailey the

scotch eggs, but real army ration packs provide a paella in a pouch for main, chased up with a chocolate brownie in a pouch for dessert. All this while observing the local sheep and taking in some April rays rather than rain.

It also gives me a chance to speak with some other members of the task force to see what it is about military vehicles and Northumberland that makes a day like this so brilliant.

The Colonel chirps up. ‘For me – and I think it’s a common theme – I’m

an engineer by trade and by nature, and with military vehicles they are the pinnacle of engineering. They were designed with function over form, built for a purpose regardless of looks, that’s the attraction.’

‘They’re genuine vehicles and often unmolested,’ says new recruit, Shaun, who has recently purchased Andy’s Wolf 90 off him. ‘I don’t like things that aren’t used. You know, really we are custodians of them, they will be historical at some point. They are rare

and essentially artefacts that need preserving. But what I love about them is you can drive them, show them, and you can use them off-road as intended.’

Artefacts they may be, but as I watch Trevor’s Lightweight bob up and down on the afternoon trails with a vista that stretches for dozens of miles, it feels like the Land Rovers are thankful not to be tucked up in some museum with recirculating air, miles from their natural environment.

‘With Northumberland, it’s the open expanse, you know, there’s a lot of sky up here,’ says Shaun in awe. ‘The lanes are really quite gentle; easy to drive, non-damaging, but interesting lanes as well with some amazing scenery.’

‘It’s not a particularly hard place to off-road, it’s more about the scenery than technique,’ elaborates Andy. ‘For Trevor and Scott, they haven’t done much laning previously, so it’s a good place to break in the trucks. You can be off the beaten track for hours!’

Somewhere high up in the hills of Northumberland, we hold position on a trail that seems to give us the picturesque landscape from a Lord of the Rings film and let our vehicles tick cool momentarily. The Captain’s 90 is overheating slightly, but it’s valuable miles to assess teething problems.

Scottie explains, ‘It’s a gorgeous area and I would say if you’re looking for something not too arduous, it’s the ideal way to run in your vehicle.

There’s three things I will remember from this trip: the scenery, the weather, and the company. It’s the first time I’ve seen Northumberland in depth, and it’s been a brilliant way to take in the county.’

I couldn’t agree more. As we move towards our final lane and, finishing in even grander style than we started, there’s another river crossing waiting for us. Like a platoon reaching the border to safety or a band of brothers touching down on British soil after fleeing Dunkirk, the Land Rovers successfully navigate the channel and reach the day’s finish.

Northumberland has mesmerised before, but this time it’s taken it up a notch. The lanes have been blockbuster, the company exceptional, and it has been a privilege to witness such scenes in artillery of such calibre.

As the sun starts to dip ever lower, the squadron must disband back to normality and I have a four-hour drive in which to reminisce on the day’s screenshots now saved in my memory.

For me, it’s over and out.

Ruby’s Off Again: Episode Eight South America is being taken by storm as Ruby The Landy rolls on down through the Latin continent. But there is to be a brief hiatus for our admirable heroine, as her owners make for Antarctica and the highlight so far of this mammoth adventure

wo years. That’s how long Jen and Gav had been waiting to visit arguably the most extreme continent in the world, and certainly the least habitable.

At the end of our last chapter, Jen and Gav had bid farewell to their favourite companion, home and primary means of transport, and left Ruby in Buenos Aires as they flew south to Ushuaia.

Antarctica was high on Jen and Gav’s priority list; wanting to spend the first Christmas and New Year of the expedition on the continent with the excursion also coinciding with Gav’s 45th birthday. For Jen, it would prove to be a milestone too, as Antarctica was the only continent still to be explored

by Mrs Bright.

Before Antarctica itself, however, the pair had booked themselves onto MS Fram, from where they would explore the Falklands and South Georgia first.

Before boarding their vessel, Jen and Gav spotted Houdini, a white van belonging to Jason and Maria, who they had last encountered in Ecuador!

Maria waved Ruby’s keepers off and the duo headed out to the Falklands.

Jen proceeded to rock the boat with her cries of excitement each time she spotted a different animal on one side of the ship, while the expedition crew staged a number of lectures over the course of the voyage. Guess who attended them all.

Even on the boat, Jen and Gav witnessed plenty of wildlife, with

whales spotted close to the ship as well as the black-browed albatross. Once our pair touched down on the first of the Falkland Islands, the rockhopper penguins took centre stage following a short hike to Devil’s Nose.

‘There were a couple of Land Rovers (one formerly belonged to the governor of the Falklands and still had the attachment on the bonnet for the flag) which were transporting those who struggled to walk, up and down the hill,’ recalls Gav. In the afternoon, a stop at Carcass Island allowed for a 10km walk to and from Leopard Beach, witnessing yet more stunning wildlife.

Now you never know when you may need a spare for your Land Rover, so it’s good to stock up while you can.

Fortunately, John from Falklands 4x4 in Stanley – and in this case the world’s southernmost Land Rover dealership – was able to meet Gav and Jen to help out.

Normally, when you take a souvenir back from a destination, it could be a pretty rock or something like that, but in this case, a shock absorber would have to suffice.

‘We were also very lucky to meet Tony, who we got talking to when we learned he owned a Defender too,’ says Jen. ‘Tony kindly offered to take us on a tour of Stanley in his Land Rover, driving us off-road to visit battlefields and landmarks whilst giving great insight into the islands along the way.

It was only later on when he revealed that the Defender we were in had belonged to Prince William while stationed in the Falklands!’

Jen and Gav then sailed onwards

to South Georgia, arriving at Fortuna Bay on the latter’s birthday. There are worse ways to spend your birthday than witnessing the likes of fur seals and king penguins in their natural environment. There was still cake, mind you.

Viewing the snow-capped mountains of the Allardyce Range and fending off farting elephant seals were both part of the itinerary in the days to come, as well as a memorable Christmas Eve in Grytviken with a service at a church and a look round an old whaling station. The boat turned into a party that evening and even Santa paid a visit, with snow starting to fall outside in what must have been a magical introduction to Christmas.

As our duo sailed on towards

Antarctica itself, the nights shortened further until it never really went dark, while icebergs and islands of white became the common landscape.

Antarctica is the driest, windiest and, on average, the highest continent in the world.

A quick stop at the Orcadas scientific station highlighted all the different research that is conducted on this hostile continent. From glaciology to seismology, discoveries and information are always being made here.

On reaching the shores of Antarctica itself, Jen and Gav awoke to a truly mesmerising vista as they cruised through the Antarctica Sound. Icebergs the size of aircraft hangars stood silently in the water, sometimes with penguins bobsleighing along them.

As the duo stepped ashore at Brown Bluff, it was quite an emotional and thankful moment for Jen, finally realising the dream of walking on all seven continents as the brown cliffs rose into the sky before them.

From here on in, it was all about adding further memories to those that had gone before. Numerous bays were visited, including Half Moon Bay, and Whalers Bay in Deception Island.

‘Here I was one of the 30 or so passengers out of 230 to do the polar plunge!’ says Jen triumphantly. ‘This involved running into the sea in my swimming costume at icy cold temperatures and running out again! For good measure I also swam round just to make sure I could get my certificate!’

Anchoring outside Cuverville Island with vibrant blue skies and crystal white landscape, mountains covered in ice and glaciers with penguins waddling around at the base, and whales could be seen offshore breaching the sea surface.

Jen and Gav visited Neko Harbour and Andvord Bay, before a two-hour boat cruise with eight others let them up close and personal with their first leopard seal and further creatures of Antarctica. And what better way to round off the day than with a barbecue!

‘On New Year’s Eve, our names had been drawn to go kayaking at Port Lockroy, which was brilliant,’ reveals Gav. ‘Then Captain Fantastic (as he’d come to be known) took us though the Lemaire Channel – a spectacular seven-mile long and one-mile wide channel full of steep cliffs, glaciers, and floating ice.’

‘To cap off a wonderful New Year’s Eve, our superb crew put on a show and a party,’ says Jen. ‘We danced, sang karaoke and marvelled at the light outside before the Captain joined us at 11.30 to count down the New Year with us.

‘What a way to see in the New Year, dancing and singing, whilst it is still light outside, in Antarctica!’

Given the celebrations, a smooth crossing was always going to be preferable for Drake’s Passage – and that’s exactly what they got as they sailed back for Ushuaia.

‘If you ever think about going to Antarctica, just go, don`t think about the cost, just go, because it’s like nowhere else on Earth,’ says Jen dreamily.

‘At times we had to pinch ourselves at what we were seeing and experiencing!’

The duo also recommends the Falklands and South Georgia, another two wonderful destinations. They headed back to Buenos Aires to be reunited with the other element of their triangle ready for the next leg of the tour.

It’s hard to imagine it getting any better than this – but this is one band of travellers who will certainly give it their best shot.

Irons in the Fire

For the last couple of months, we’ve followed the resurgence of Martin Lear’s Series III Fire Tender – and a beautiful Land Rover it has turned out to be. But his Isle of Scilly Fire Engine isn’t the only project to have been undertaken in recent years Words and Pictures: Martin Lear

ou’ll have heard me babble on recently about the restoration of my Series III Fire Engine, which I have since found out served on St Martin’s Island as well as St Mary’s and Briere, down here in the Scillies. It’s a vehicle I will treasure and have already enjoyed taking to shows this year – but there is another Land Rover in my life, too.

As you know, I emigrated (or at least that’s what it felt like) to Cornwall from Derbyshire in the late Eighties, where I retired back in ’05. That’s when I decided to purchase this particular machine.

It was a smart vehicle, but then the beauty only went skin-deep. When I first drove the 110, shortly after I had bought it, I realised there was a problem with regards to its power. My trip from Derbyshire to Cornwall is still etched in my memory. It wasn’t that the top speed of the 110, with the 2.25-litre petrol engine, was particularly low, it was just that on anything but an absolutely flat section of motorway that speed just fell away, and any incline led to shifting down through the gears and nervous glances in the rear-view mirror at rapidly approaching HGVs, who weren’t keen on having to move out to overtake. In short, I felt like a mobile traffic island. A scary experience.

So here I was with one suspect Land Rover to call my own. It gets better, though. In late 2006 the 110 was presented by me for MoT, with excellent straight panels, a reasonable paint finish, that severely underpowered 2.25 engine and what transpired to be a completely rotten underside.

Even today, Terry, the MoT guy I used then, laughs at the memory of the first time I presented the 110 for its MoT. It was, to quote him, ‘One of the best chicken wire and fibreglass bodges he had ever seen.’ My choice at this time was to sell the 110 for parts or, based on the straight body panels, spend a lot of money and bring it up to a roadworthy standard.

01527 892377 Faced with throwing away £1500, that being the cost of the 110, I stepped into the world of Land Rover rebuilding and restoration. The fact that someone pointed out to me it was a ‘crossover’ vehicle and therefore pretty rare added some encouragement towards preserving the 110.

There was another factor involved, too, that being the news that there was a galvanised chassis available at the local 4x4 centre and I was told that if I could carry out the stripping down of the Land Rover and the non-technical elements of the rebuild, it would cost me just £2000. Inevitably it cost me

Still, it’s a brilliant engine so it’s not a monster to work on. And now Martin can travel at regular vehicle speeds, too. Win win considerably more, with the bulkhead predictably proving to be in the same state as the chassis. But by the end of 2007, thanks to significant assistance from James at Penrith 4x4, the 110 was taxed and MoT’d, chugging around the lanes of West Cornwall wearing its new galvanised chassis and bulkhead.

The story, however, is far from over.

The lack of power was an embar-

rassment and by 2009 I had endured enough and was ready for the ‘fast’ life.

I bought a 1994 Discovery which had failed its MoT, but crucially with low miles on the 200Tdi unit. After some modification of the power steering system, things improved further still at a later date by the addition of a virtually new Defender power steering unit, taken from a vehicle I had broken up

to provide a bulkhead to be modified for the fire tender project.

In 2013, the original LT77 gearbox started to strip its synchromesh around Le Mans in France. We got down to Saint Jean de Luz using first, second and fourth gears only, and rebooked our ferry back from Santander to Plymouth. Interestingly, at this point I Continued overleaf

made the discovery that European recovery, as opposed to breakdown cover, is only activated if you are within three days of your ferry booking. Naturally, we stayed put until within two days of our booking. Having made it back to Blighty, using limited and noisy gears, I obtained a replacement gearbox from Ashcroft Transmissions in April 2014.

After owning the 110 for more than

ten years, there wasn’t much more I could do on the vehicle. I did, however, book the 110 in for a respray last year. After sandblasting some good wheels and adding a new coat of the original cream to them, I finished the wheels off with a new set of Goodyear G90s. All that was left to do was to strip the trusty 22 down and fit new gaskets and pushrods.

I still run my 110 every day, and together with the Series III Fire Engine, they make quite the pair. Interestingly, the Series III is, being of 1984 vintage, one of the last of that model and is actually a newer vehicle than my completed, daily runabout of a 110, which was first registered in 1983.

Together, they really are a pair of ‘crossover’ Landies.

The Puma Defenders are the descendants of the pioneering Series I, and while many of you out there (ourselves included) prefer the Tdi and Td5 Defenders, there is some merit to owning Land Rover’s final incarnation of Solihull’s finest.

Ashley Counsell from Ashley 4x4 has joined us again to give us all the insight you need on whether this is the Landy for you.

Right, let’s start with the engines, first a 2.4 TDCi unit from 2008, later replaced by the 2.2 variant – and both borrowed from a Transit.

They offered a huge amount of torque, which helped off-road credentials, but were they problematic?

‘The engines are both four-cylinder

jobs,’ says Ashley. ‘Faults we’ve seen include injector seal failure causing excessive crank case pressure, EGR failures (as with everything) and a faulty fuel metering valve on the high pressure pump that can cause a loss of power or poor running. They’re easy enough to replace, but need to be coded in diagnostically to function correctly.’

To go with the TDCi units, a sixspeed manual gearbox was drafted in, which did help when it came to tackling the occasional motorway.

The only issue here stems from the wear on the splined coupling at the back of the box.

‘A bad clonk on pull-off indicates the problem,’ informs Ashley. ‘It can be repaired with the box in situ, once the transfer box is removed, costing around £400-500 to fix.’

In terms of the transfer box itself, along with the axles, they are much the same as previous Defenders.

Suspension components are relatively durable, but replacing bushes and joints through general wear should naturally be expected.

‘The heating and air con systems are better than pre-2007, but that’s not difficult! And, as with the electrics, it’s all fairly straightforward.’

OK, so what about the chassis?

‘Well, they aren’t massively different from pre-’07, so will probably suffer the same deterioration issues as time goes by,’ admits Ashley. ‘But there are some improvements, like scuttle vent deletion and the better rear door.

‘They are more refined, though,

and there’s various interior and body options to choose from.’

Ashley’s final tip is to not pay over the odds for your Defender and fit security devices to protect them, too.

‘They have such a cult following, though, which will ensure they’ll be around for a long time yet!

Series I (1948-1958)

I

f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

I

n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s

item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy.

The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985)

F

ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

P

ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion.

To mimic the civvy Series ma-

chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978)

O

nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)

T

he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are.

This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)

I

n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far.

It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel.

If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily

be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold.

The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard.

Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?

Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)

A

fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability.

These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper.

Some Tdi Defenders have received

galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy.

By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all.

Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

F

ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly.

Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples

of what many have been subject to.

Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces.

The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences.

With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-2016)

T

he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years.

Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders.

The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money.

You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£2500-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90).

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

W

e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles.

With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can

be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

M

ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

T

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s

in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors.

Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)

M

any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)

C

ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out

for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present)

I

f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)

M

uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present)

T

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling.

But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present)

W

hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job.

That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals.

Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)

T

he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

F

ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)

T

he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples.

A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present)

L

aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass.

Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better.

We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-

ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production.

New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though.

We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present)

rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make.

It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

Lynx Evo is the next generation diagnostic tool for Land Rover vehicles. Offering market leading diagnostics from a powerful and mobile design. Lynx Evo provides full vehicle servicing and in depth diagnostic capability for all Land Rover models from 1990 through to current day. Ideal for the workshop and home user.

Live data can also be displayed using numerics and graphics making it easier to read time based events on your Land Rover. This small but powerful Dongle requires no batteries as it uses the vehicles power. For the enthusiast home user, using Lynx Evo will mean no more trips to your local main dealer to clear any faults on your Land Rover.

Lynx Evo is compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices with apps available for download from the Apple App Store and Android Play Store. As the software is App Store based and is loaded onto your mobile device, updates are as easy to do as any other mobile app, simply click the update icon.
