Plains To See A

fter a massive seven years, the Green Lane Association’s waymarking project on Salisbury Plain is finally complete.

A team led by GLASS stalwart Dale Wyatt has spent that time signposting not just byways but also restricted byways, bridleways and footpaths – meaning an area once rich in rights of way but notoriously hard to navigate is now easily accessible for all.

At the conclusion of their final signing day this spring, Dale’s team were able to say that the Plain was now completely waymarked. One look at the size of the area on a map, and the sheer number of rights of way it hosts, will give you an idea of how great a task this has been – all those involved deserve the highest level of recognition from throughout the off-roading and green laning community.

‘I’d like to thank all the people that have helped,’ said Dale. ‘GLASS members, TRF members, Wiltshire Bridleways, BHS and any other groups I may have forgotten over the years.

The project would not have happened without all you good people devoting your time and fuel. And of course Derek, who represented Wiltshire County Council with the most amazingly positive and cheerful attitude.’

‘Most of all, I’d like to thank Lt Col Nigel Linge, who I met at the beginning of the project and became good

friends with. He later retired from the MOD and carried on in a voluntary capacity. Without his energy, the project would never had happened.’

A huge benefit for motor vehicle users, in addition to now being able to find their way around among the mass of tracks created by Army vehicles on the Plain, is that as a result of this collaboration with GLASS, the MOD has created a number of Permissory Byways. Along with the creation of some new statutory BOATS, these fill in the gaps that were created by the dishonest NERC legislation of 2006 – in some cases following the same routes it turned into restricted byways.

The latest of these was created as recently as May this year.

With the GLASS team’s job now complete (save for regular returns to the Plain to replace broken signs), and the newly opened motor vehicle routes allowing for better joined-up travel than ever before, the rights of way in

the area truly serve as an indication of what can be achieved when user groups and the authorities work together rather than against each other.

Farmers are given Discoverys S

ome of us have to buy our new Land Rover Discovery. But five young farmers simply get given one for a year. All they have to do is work outdoors in all weathers, often alone in challenging conditions, knowing the public largely doesn’t understand what they’re doing, while working in an industry where they have shown they can make a difference.

While we just have to work in an office or workshop, usually moaning because the price of milk has gone up.

But then we’re not one of the winners of the vehicle bursary run by Land Rover and the Prince’s Countryside Fund. If we were then we’d have the free use of a new Discovery for a year, along with the training to get the most out of it.

The five winners, aged from 21 to 34, had shown a brilliant business plan, as well as passion for their industry and a

commitment to making a difference in their community.

The winners were Jenny Dunstan from Falmouth, who founded Jenny’s Beef Ltd specialising in top Piemontese beef; Claire Howlett who has taken over the running of the family business of Wicton Farm with her brother; David Corrie-Close and his wife Bekka who

started the Horned Beef Company in Lindale; James Speers who has a suckling cow farm and is the president of the Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster, where he works raising awareness of mental health; and Lucy and Chris Williams who are taking a different route. They’re starting Tulloch Tea, a tea company in Scotland that also

is working on a range of tea-infused beauty products.

This is the fourth year that Land Rover has supported the bursary, and their vehicles should help those bright, determined young people make a success of their companies and make a difference to their communities. We wish the winners every success.

Green Light for Green Lane The Green Lane Association has been given the go-ahead by the local authority to start work on repairing the famous Happy Valley green lane in Gwynedd. The lane will remain closed while work is undertaken, but the Association’s volunteers will ensure it’s open again in the shortest possible time. If you’d like to become one of those volunteers, or have a few spare quid to help pay for the work, contact wrexham.rep@glass-uk.org

Can I have a word...

I

n our unusual community of Green Oval fandom, you will find all sorts of personalities, both in terms of the owners who keep these Solihull relics, and in terms of the vehicles we cherish so dearly.

There’s the big and brash Forward Controls, the graceful Range Rovers, the plucky Series Land Rovers and the Discoverys who pride themselves on being the jack of all trades. And then, of course, there’s everyone’s favourite superstar: the iconic Defender.

I met a particularly charming personality a couple of months back, when I headed south to Buckinghamshire to visit Adam Norton of Norton Automotive.

As pleasant as Adam was, it was a Land Rover he had under his custody at the time that captured my attention.

She goes by the name of Paloma and you can see her for yourself on page 20.

Paloma is different to most other Land Rovers out there. You see, growing up she didn’t have any siblings like all the other Series IIAs been born in Lode Lane. She has a double cab body, something that Land Rover the company never produced. Paloma, therefore, is a unique individual.

A previous owner has gone out of his way to turn her into the form she holds today – and it’s that desire to create something different that helps produce these unique and utterly extraordinary pieces of machinery.

I took a ride with Paloma and she was a pleasure to be with. We gelled instantly as her sweet-sounding heart beat away in front of me. Maybe I’m getting carried away, but you can probably tell I have a lot of faith in Paloma. Hopefully, when you read her story, you will too.

team from the Green Lane Association has scoured the entire length of one of North Wales’ most popular byways in a bid to clear it of spikes placed deliberately in the surface of the track.

White Stones, a mainly firm-surfaced right of way directly north of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, is one of the area’s ‘honeypot’ lanes. Some years ago, we spoke to someone while using the lane who claimed to live nearby and told us that local residents were ‘going to see about getting it closed’.

Since that conversation, other GLASS members have reported finding fake closure notices apparently put in place there by people masquerading as the local authority.

Reports of spikes having been put in the lane began surfacing this spring, after a number of vehicles had their tyres flattened while using the route.

In late June, members started walking the lane to search for objects – and came back reporting a frightening number of improvised caltrops dug into the ground in places where the terrain makes it almost impossible to avoid. Furthermore, these were disguised by surrounding them with flat stones and even sheep droppings.

Following an appeal to members for funds, the local GLASS group purchased a metal detector and, on 23 June, a team consisting of Duncan Barrett, Darren Henson, Dafed Taylor, John Pierson, Darren Preston and

Chris Henson spent the day picking over the entire length of the lane in search of items left to damage vehicles.

With another two detectors also having been loaned in by volunteers, the team was able to examine the right of way as thoroughly as possible.

What they found was horrifying – a sharpened length of metal bar left in the ford halfway along the lane, two home-made caltrops and three spiked bars buried in the ground, as well as dozens of screws, nails and tacks of various sizes. The team also picked up any litter they found en route.

While no-one is in any doubt that these devices are intended to intimidate motor vehicle users, the most serious damage they could do would be to walkers, horses or mountain bike riders – any of whom could easily

have suffered serious physical injury as a result. Naturally, the GLASS reps responsible for the clearance effort reported the incident to the local police – however none expected anything of significance to come of it.

Elsewhere in North Wales, it has this month been reported that GLASS has invested in wildlife cameras to be used, by agreement with landowners, in a bid to collect evidence against rogue 4x4 drivers causing damage to the countryside through illegal off-roading. While this is certainly to be applauded, it is to be hoped that those tasked with protecting the public will put as much effort into dealing with people whose attempts to cause criminal damage to legally used motor vehicles risk causing serious injury to innocent rights of way users.

Think of two of your favourite brands and the chances are that Land Rover would be one and Barbour would be the other, even if the latter has become something of a fashion brand rather than the favourite for gamekeepers with a ferret in one pocket and a dead rabbit in the other.

However, let’s not quibble, they’re both great British brands and they’ve come together to create a suitably manly jacket. You can tell from the name: Land Rover x Barbour Men’s Carraw Waxed Jacket.

We hesitate to highlight welders here as that sort of infers that some old Land Rovers might just possibly have a problem with rust and general metal decay. Naturally we’re not suggesting that your favourite 4x4 is anything other than bulletproof, but were you to need the services of a welder then this might be a good place to start.

Assuming you don’t want something that a professional would use to weld up an aircraft carrier, this Mightymig 90 should do the trick. The unit is good to go for gasless welding so they’re great to use outdoors or in and aren’t bothered by windy conditions.

So that was summer. It was good, cheerio, maybe see you next year. In the more immediate future we have colder weather, shorter days and an inexplicable desire to start gathering straw and dried bracken together in a sort of nest.

Assuming you manage not to actually hibernate this winter – lucky you if you can – then you’ll probably spend at least some moments worrying about the state of your battery.

Lazer Lamps Set to Light Up this Winter

Meet the Land Rover that goes by the name of Paloma – she’s one of a kind. Yes, this is the unique and ingenious Series IIA Double Cab, never to be produced by Solihull

W

hen it comes to Land Rovers, you’d think Solihull had the whole workhorse thing covered.

The company produced basic machines that were unrivalled off-road – and would destroy themselves upon it (see this month’s buyer’s guide section). But keeping Series Land Rovers to the fields and farms they were intended for meant you were keeping them to the brief.

These vehicles came in various body styles. Or at least they did after Land Rover thought it best not to have people driving around with their heads as an impact zone, should the vehicle roll.

There have been short-wheelbase Landies, long-wheelbase Landies, station wagons, pick-ups, hard tops, softtops, whatever kind of top you needed really. But it took Land Rover until the 1980s to ‘mass produce’ anything with

a double cab body, and that was only in the form of the oversized 127.

With the Td5 era, Defender 110 Double Cabs became commonplace and over the years Land Rover has kept its protagonist updated in a number of guises, but what happens if you wish you’d had a double cab body for your Series IIA? The beauty (or lunacy) within the community we so dearly love is that

And, well, because the cliché goes that these vehicles are just big Meccano sets, changing a few bits around and making your own ideal Landy, it’s child’s play.

Take Paloma, for example. Nice, isn’t she. She wasn’t born like this I’m afraid, though, because surgery has been necessary to get her to look like this. Imagine a Hollywood actress from yesteryear who is trying to get ‘ready’ for one final blockbuster: a little stretch here, some inflating of the rear end and finally a bit of a makeover to get the whole package looking more youthful.

For Paloma here it has worked well.

For Paloma, faith has been rewarded.

For some celebrities out there, it’s a more unfortunate tale/tail ending.

Adam Norton, proprietor of Norton Automotive, discovered this A-lister and has revealed some of the details behind Paloma’s early career.

‘Paloma started her life just as a bog-standard 109” Pick Up and was used by her first owner from 1967 to

2006,’ Adam tells me, as we gaze over in her direction. As a 109” Pick Up, Paloma was used to hard graft and getting her hands dirty, with her first keeper employing her on a smallholding and registering her as an agricultural vehicle.

If there is one thing that can make a Land Rover particularly desirable, it’s when the word ‘smallholding’ is present. Often, when Land Rovers have only been subjected to light work on holdings, their mileage can be minimal. In Paloma’s case, the clock currently only reads 10,000 miles, and Adam has been told that the figure is absolutely genuine.

In a way, it would be unlikely for a lady to have undertaken anything drastically labour-intensive back then, so maybe Paloma has looked after herself all these years. She has a number of assets after all. Her golden heart can also be identified as a 2.25-litre petrol motor, so there’s sweetness on the inside as well as the out.

and even a working Smiths heater. All this lying within a Bronze Green exterior and topped off with a Limestone roof. But she has brawn to match the beauty, this girl. She’s solid, carrying a chassis and bulkhead in remarkably good order.

‘In 2006, the nephew of the first owner became Paloma’s keeper and that was when the work was done, between ’06 and ’07,’ explains Adam.

‘He must have used a station wagon vehicle as a donor to get Paloma into this state. That’s the thing with Land Rovers, if there isn’t the exact specification of vehicle available, you just build it yourself!’

Following her relationship with the nephew, Paloma found a new suitor in

early 2016 who carried out a light mechanical overhaul on her, including a full service, fitting new brakes, a new exhaust, and installing new clutch cylinders and new propshaft.

‘I bought her from the third owner after the gentleman had brought her back up to a good roadworthy condition,’ says Adam. It’s not hard to see why Paloma caught Adam’s eye. And now she has caught mine too.

The Td5 Double Cabs have always looked a little more brutish and playful to my eye – you only need to take a look at the Defender featured later on in this very paper. But seeing a Series Land Rover in double cab form throws up a different persona. Series Land Rovers by their very nature are

not as beefy as Defenders and Paloma is a daintier soul altogether.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend some quality time with Paloma, if only brief. But I can confirm that she does ride very well. Her heart runs sweetly and she carries her form beautifully. She is the sort of Land Rover you’d take home to your mother. Only I can’t… because she’s been sold and moved on to her next suitor. Drat.

Sometimes people take on projects because they want something to be faster, stronger, or better looking. Sometimes people just build things because they want to highlight what can be done

M

odifying a Defender is, well, quite frankly yesterday’s news. I mean, lifting a Defender? Changing it cosmetically, or giving it more gadgets?

It’s all been done countless times before – but then customisation is always individual and the intended goal can differ depending on which crackpot came up with the vision.

A Land Rover, for example, may receive a selection of mods inside the vehicle to help improve on interior comfort, or to simply provide some where there was previously none.

There could be some sort of scheme to enhance the Land Rover’s off-road capabilities, with the addition of such trinkets as lift kits and very big tyres.

However, Andy Goodyear put together his Defender purely as ‘a bit of fun’ and to merely ‘show people what can be done’.

Cast your eye over these pages and this Defender certainly makes itself heard. Being a Defender 110, it was always going to be big, but then Andy has continued to feed the Landy steroids for breakfast so that now it is a bit of a giant.

Let’s begin with its general structure.

Today, it’s a 110 Double Cab, but four years ago, when Andy first set eyes on it, this 110 was one very ordinary Station Wagon.

‘A guy I know said, “Look, I’ve got this Land Rover, would you like to take it off my hands?” So, I told him I would buy it off him,’ says Andy. ‘I had the double cab body knocking around and preferred how it looked over the station wagon.’

The change in body style is just one of many changes Andy has made though, with the 110 purpose-built to be a show motor, as well as being a bit of a toy that Andy and his son, Will, can play with together. Will actually has his own Series I, which previously featured in this very publication, but together Andy and Will have made this showstopper.

It was resprayed, but kept its original white complexion in the process. That now contrasts nicely with the black highlights around the vehicle: the puma bonnet, KBX grille and light surrounds, the snorkel and wing-top chequer plating. These are your bread and butter ‘smartening’ modifications.

Ready for more? Well, did we forget to mention this has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis? It has. And the 110 has been lifted by five inches using

Terrafirma springs and shocks, while cranked radius arms from Adrenalin 4x4 and a complete complement of bushes from Polybush are also in.

The Britpart winch and bumper came with the vehicle, although Andy would like to upgrade the winch in the future. On the flipside, a NAS step specially made by one of Andy’s friends who constructs roll cages sits proudly

at the rear. Because it was a bespoke fabrication, too, Andy’s request to have it made beefier was duly met.

A swing-away wheel carrier on the rear has been installed, but not without strengthened the rear first. The 110 isn’t the easiest of vehicles to manoeuvre, particularly a 110 as chunky as this, so the Kenwood DVD player also possesses the reversing camera feature.

‘I have had people mistake this for a 130 before – I guess it does look a little on the large side,’ says Andy. ‘When did I get into Land Rovers - now you’re asking. I probably first got into them when I was 15. Runs in the blood, you see. Dad always had them around and was into his Green Ovals.’

Now Andy is on the verge of turning 50, meaning he’s been around these machines for nearly 35 years. It feels like there should be some sort of celebration or at the very least some cake, don’t you agree?

As you’d expect, Andy has had his own fair share of Land Rovers over the years. ‘Back in ’94, at the yard we were based at previously, at one stage I had 34 Land Rovers lying around,’ he laughs, ‘I should state that they weren’t all mine!’

The numbers have become more manageable in recent years and Andy now has a brilliant show truck that will last for years to come, plus it enables him to trailer Will’s Series I to shows as well. Mind you, his daughter is getting her wish list ready now. ‘“I don’t want green!” she told me, so I said to her, “What about this exRAF one then”’ says Andy as his eyes

started to show signs of rolling over.

‘Yeah that’ll do,’ came the reply. ‘But I want it done to spec with all the decals and everything.’

Sounds like Andy has got a fair bit on his hands. So it’s probably a good thing the Green Oval passion flows right through his veins. He’s had his fun and shown what he can do, now it’s time to put his money where his mouth is.

Changing the original engine in your Land Rover for something else in the Solihull repertoire may not be anything unusual in itself – but here is an enthusiast who has taken Range Rover engine conversions to new heights

M

y history with Range Rovers goes back some way, as is often the case with our breed. It started with a two-door J-reg Classic, and the engine swapping began almost immediately.

The two-door was converted to take a Mazda 3.0-litre HA diesel (similar to a Perkins 4.182), and later adapted to swallow a Perkins 4.236 engine – less trouble than the aforementioned, but also less refined.

After the perkiness followed a second Range Rover, this time a four-door B-reg example modified to use the brilliant 200Tdi. This was vastly better, but the conversion itself wasn’t quite right. A third and fourth Range Rover came along in its wake, both of which were factory-built 300Tdis – one manual, the other an auto - and the pair of them were generally very good.

However, after the manual had done 265,000 miles, and the auto 190,000, you’ll agree it was probably a suitable

time to change. We considered the Discovery 2 route, but preferred Range Rovers and so went down the road to a P38, knowing that the engines were not the best, but the rest – and I use the term optimistically – was.

I considered the prospect of a V8, which would need to be converted to gas as I was doing a lot of mileage at the time, but investigations suggested that trouble was likely. So I settled on a DHSE with engine modifications likely to ensue, as this engine, at least by 2001, was very short on low-end torque.

The first change to be made was installing a tuning box, which undoubtedly helped, but as expected did not provide the easy performance we were looking for. So more changes were needed, leading to a variable nozzle turbo from a Td6 motor being fitted to the existing engine.

This gave a significant improvement to low-end torque, but I never got it quite right. Possibly with hindsight,

further development of this would have given acceptable results – not as good as the Td6, but adequate enough and for significantly less distress.

I’ve mentioned the Td6 and the use of its parts, but what followed was a complete engine swap to said unit. I looked at various options, but the best seemed to be the L322’s Td6 unit. The advantage being that the block, at least externally, is identical to the 2.5 DHSE that was coming out, so physically the conversion would be straightforward.

The only mechanical issues were that a fabricated sump was needed to accommodate the P38’s beam axle, and that the choice of torque converter would be limited by the small bell housing. I considered an engine and gearbox swap, but decided that this would be too much trouble. Keeping the existing 4HP22 gearbox meant that things were mechanically simpler, but that subsequent tuning would not be an option. However, I reasoned (correctly) that performance would be sufficient, seeing as a P38 is several hundred kilos lighter than an L322!

Many hours were spent digging into various torque converters. Part of the problem with diesel P38s is that the torque converter is very ‘slippy’, meaning the stalling speed is at around 3,000rpm, apparently in order to get the engine revs up.

Unfortunately, I realised this would negate much of the advantage of fitting the Td6 engine. The obvious option would be to fit a V8 torque converter, but this would not fit in the bell housing. As a solution, JP Automatics modified the existing unit to provide a lower stalling point. They warned that the modification might not give exactly the result required, but it was perfect.

Rally Raid performed the conversion itself, as they have expertise in fitting these engines to competition cars. Mechanically, it all worked well, with claims that my P38 was faster off the line than a 2.7 TDV6 Range Rover Sport – something I can certainly believe. But the communication between engine and gearbox was not right. At Continued overleaf

the time, they were speaking different electronic ‘languages’.

I tried various things, but was eventually defeated by an electronic ‘handshake’, sometimes being 0.02 seconds out! All this electronic stuff can be very deflating. Still, the situation was made somewhat better by fitting a 4.6 V8 gearbox controller. This still didn’t communicate with the engine, so the downshifts were harsh (with full pressure) but the gear changes themselves were in about the right places – although the change points were not affected by throttle positioning like they should be.

Given the fact I did 80,000 miles with it in this state, it can’t have been too bad. The final solution was fitting Compushift to control the gearbox. This system, sold by Ashcroft in the UK, does not rely on any communication with the engine, as it is designed to allow the mating of non-electronic engines to electronically controlled gearboxes.

The only complication was that the Land Rover version of the system (for the 4HP22 or 24) uses a Discovery XYZ switch, not a P38 one. Hence I modified the gearbox shaft to take two XYZ switches, a Discovery one to

Td6 and my relaxed driving style, which was all very straightforward. I can honestly say that the P38 with a Td6 engine and Compushift is a better system than our factory-standard 2013 automatic Freelander. That is not to say that the Freelander is bad, though.

I love my Range Rovers and, for me, the Td6 is the perfect engine for a P38.

It provides good, easy performance with about 10% better fuel consumption than the 2.5, and I am sure that a factory version with a five-speed ‘box could have been better still.

There has been a lot of head scratching to get to this point, figuring out the electronic languages and getting all components to ‘sync’ properly. There has been plenty of trial and error along the way, but I do not regret the conversion, though, possibly if I had known in 2006 that the then-new Freelander 2 auto would be relatively trouble-free…

The trouble, with people like you and I, is that if we’re faced with a choice between a characterless trouble-free vehicle, or a Land Rover with bags of character and plenty more baggage, we both know what the outcome is.

New Land Rovers are expensive, right? Well, yes, they are, if you tick every single box on the options list! But before buying your shiny new Green Oval machine, come and visit us at The Landy – it’s better than wishing you’d gone to Spec Savers

I

f you’re buying a new Land Rover these days, there’s a good chance that your brain will be throwing around words like ‘ridiculously’ and ‘expensive’. But there are ways to get the vehicle you want without being put on the naughty step by your bank manager.

To illustrate, we’ve brought a Discovery Sport to proceedings. This is the cheapest Land Rover you can currently buy and, if you’re going off the basic on-the-road price, it can be yours for just £28,355. Naturally, the test car we have here doesn’t cost that amount of money. Instead, prepare the box of Kleenex because this example costs an eye-watering £57,855.

In fairness, it has virtually every conceivable extra you can get on a vehicle with four wheels these days and it’s a pretty good all-round family motor. There’s seven seats for a variety of differently-shaped humans, a handy sliding middle row, lots of power sockets to keep devices high in volume and your kids low, plus a good driving experience with a nine-speed auto-

matic (model dependent) and fairly frugal engines, courtesy of JLR’s new Ingenium range.

The issue is, this HSE Luxury Dynamic model goes even further. The Electrically Deployable Tow Pack costs £1,345, while the Entertainment Pack, which puts a couple of TV screens in the back of the headrests so your offspring can watch Tom and Jerry, is priced at £4,140!

To test if this really is the ideal family Land Rover, and whether it can be obtained on a suitable family budget, we needed a couple of things. Firstly, an extensive probing of our vehicle’s spec sheet and the options on the Land Rover website; and secondly, we needed to borrow a child.

Happily, I know how to type ‘Land Rover’ into Google, and we found a child who goes by the name of George. Rest assured, I’m on speaking terms with his owners and they were happy for him to be chauffeured around while munching on a packet of Hula Hoops. A young man with exquisite taste already, I see.

Here is the aforementioned ‘borrowed child’, George, tucking into his fine choice of savoury snacks whilst sampling the delights on offer from JLR’s Entertainment Pack.

Anyway, George was clearly a fan of plugging in the headphones and watching the cartoons playing directly behind my head. Still, the rest of the time he’s every bit as happy with his daddy’s iPad… and when I told his daddy how much the Entertainment Pack costs, he said it was so offensive he’d never buy a Land Rover again.

You need an appropriate platform to build your Discovery Sport from, and that comes from selecting the 180hp TD4 Ingenium engine with the auto ‘box and the SE Tech trim level.

The 180hp diesel is the best middle ground, with ample performance and economy, plus you’re able to select the nine-speed auto, which is ideally what you want.

And even in the seemingly mid-level SE Tech guise, you get all of the following trinkets: a heated windscreen, a pedestrian airbag on the bonnet, the usual Terrain Response and Emergency Brake Assist, heated front seats, parking sensors, cruise control, keyless entry and Lane Departure Warning.

Above: Ditch the black exterior and rims, but when the interior is black with red accents, this is something we can approve of and an 8” touchscreen, plus a load of airbags inside and a reassuring five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

This combination alone comes in at £36,495. Well, so it’s way over £30K, but crucially it’s £20,000 less than our test car, and you’ve got a little bit of room for a couple of choice extras before incurring the new tax penalties for buying a vehicle costing £40,000 or over. Incidentally, it means you pay an additional £310 a year in tax for the first five years of the vehicle’s life.

It all adds up.

You may wish to pay for the exterior colour of your Discovery Sport, purely because you only get white or black for free. Our test car isn’t the ‘free black’ either, as this is the £640 Santorini Black. Unless you want to look like you’re raising your George for a life of dealing narcotics, perhaps opt for the equivalently priced Byron Blue or Scotia Grey. Oh, and keep the wheels to the standard 18” 5-split-spoke ‘Style

5011’ alloys – you’ll get a better ride than on the 19-inch wheels and you won’t have to pay hundreds of pounds just to have them in black.

Personally, I do love a panoramic roof. It lightens the cabin and will be useful on journeys if your kids are hoping to read or watch videos on their iPads. It can be an expensive option, but providing you don’t go for a contrast roof colour (most of which will be glass anyway) you can get the panoramic roof for £1005. And if you must bring a touch of the dark side to your Discovery Sport, just add the Privacy Glass.

We’d keep the standard Cirrus headlining for a lighter ambience inside and go for a black interior as it tends to date better. You choose if you want to pay for electrically adjustable seats, but is it really that much of a chore to use a lever? You could upgrade the stereo to the Meridian Sound System for a reasonable £215, which brings us to a current total of £38,730.

After you’ve considered all of those options, if you’re building your own vehicle on Land Rover’s website, you’ll then be machine-gunned with different ‘packs’ you can select. It’s quite overwhelming, to be honest.

But you don’t need graphite or black highlights outside the vehicle, you can park the car yourself, there’s no point in heated rear seats when the kids will be in their own car or booster seats anyway, and because you’re a fan of Land Rovers, you’re a ruffty-tuffty kind of person that can make do without a heated steering wheel and fancy LED light signatures.

Our advice: just add the USB charging sockets to the second and third rows for £225. The result is an on-the-road price of £38,955. And you have a Discovery Sport that looks more respectable, with plenty of kit to keep everyone entertained – and at a budget that will keep you and your George very happy indeed.

The Other Big Five Words and Pictures: Noel and Marilu Peries

You can plan your dream adventure down to a tee, but often the most valuable knowledge comes from those who have been there before you. So, if you’re considering going on a safari in your Land Rover, you may wish to listen to this couple

F

or most people, the idea of going on an African safari invokes romantic images of tall savannah grasses, acacia trees, khaki outfits and dramatic lion kills.

And for these reasons and many more, going on safari can be an amazing trip of a lifetime.

But we’ve learnt the hard way that glossy magazine spreads and holiday adverts don’t always convey the impor-

tance of being prepared and managing your expectations. Safaris are extraordinary holidays, but they can sometimes feel like little more than long and expensive camping trips.

After a whole year of exploring national parks in Southern and East Africa in our 1991 Land Rover Defender named Maggie, here are some things we’ve learnt about going on safaris that we think everyone should know.

Safaris are expensive, but they don’t have to be unaffordable There’s no way around it: safaris cost a lot of money. For those of you (like us) who don’t have thousands to splash, the costs can quickly add up. By far the most expensive parks we visited are in East Africa. In this region, the likes of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater cost $600 or more per day, per person. Even if opting for a self-drive safari, the cost of 4x4 rental plus camping in popular parks can exceed reasonable expectations.

For those working on a modest budget, we always recommend starting in Southern Africa. The Kruger National Park in South Africa or Namibia’s Etosha National Park, for instance, are some of Africa’s best parks for wildlife viewing. But they’re also value for money in comparison to their East African alternatives.

To fellow travellers, we always recommend visiting some of the less popular, and therefore more affordable, national parks. For instance, fees for

Ruaha National Park in Tanzania are a fraction of those for the extremely popular northern circuit. And for the price of a three-day camping trip in the Serengeti, you could afford a three-day luxury lodge stay (with just as many leopard sightings to boot!).

Our advice for those on a stricter budget: look for affordable accommodation options on the periphery of national parks, especially campsites

or lodges that are owned and run by locals or communities. A good example is the Khwai community camp site on the northern edge of Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Although Botswana is one of the most expensive safari destinations in the region, at the community campsites you can see just as much, if not more, wildlife as inside the park at a fraction of the cost.

Remember that with a day’s park fee, it’s often possible to squeeze in two to three game drives. So unless you can really afford it, and you have plenty of patience (see no. 3!), one or two days is plenty of time.

Also look for deals, which are abundant in the low and shoulder seasons. Packages such as South Africa National Parks’ Wild Card can save a lot of money for those spending more than a week inside South Africa’s national parks.

You might not see any of the ‘Big Five’, but they’re overrated anyway Visiting a park that is home to the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhino) doesn’t guarantee you that will see the Big Five.

Noel and I cringe whenever we’re stopped by impatient tourists in national parks. ‘Have you seen any lions?’ they demand to know, and drive off in a huff when we deliver the news.

On our journey we met countless local guides who often have a lot of knowledge about non-big-five animals, birds and flora, but are confronted daily by disgruntled tourists expecting a Discovery Channel experience.

The Big Five is an arbitrary grouping based on prize hunting. The term was coined by hunters to refer to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot.

For those just visiting the parks, we believe the Big Five don’t actually matter.

Repeat that mantra every day, and you’re so much more likely to enjoy your experience. After two years of living in Botswana and going on many safari trips, Marilu saw her first pride of lions in Kruger National Park last year. But she still hasn’t spotted a leopard or cheetah in the wild (yet!).

Our advice: take an interest in the lesser-hyped animals and you’re likely to have a better experience. There is

National parks are home to thousands of species of birds, flora and fauna. Sometimes these species are rare and unique to that specific park – so pack those binoculars and a detailed wildlife guide!

To increase your chances of spotting rare and elusive animals, find out when the park gates are open and try to enter as early as possible. Or better yet – sleep inside the park, as visitors are often allowed to go on game drives before the gates open to the masses.

Safaris can get pretty uncomfortable Long, hot and tiring days spent bouncing around a Defender on

dusty, corrugated dirt roads. Returning to a campsite at night with cold bucket showers. Safaris can be fun and rewarding, especially when you finally find that herd of elephants bathing in the river. But they can also be hard work.

On our journey, we met a number of tourists who suffered from what we liked to call ‘safari fatigue’. And they all fell into one fatal trap – overestimating the amount of time they would enjoy being ferried around national parks.

And for us, even with the love of the bush in our blood, a two-day, twonight stay is about long enough to test our patience.

If long camping trips excite you, then you’ll love going on safari. If not, then we recommend an experience that involves staying in a comfortable lodge that can organise outings and game drives. Close proximity to dangerous wildlife is exciting, but also terrifying Africa’s national parks are not theme parks. During our year of self-drive safaris, we often found ourselves, and our Landy, too close for comfort with dangerous animals. In the well-visited parks, animals are used to vehicles roaming through their environment.

But they are still wild and unpredictable. So treat them with reverence.

Elephants, in particular, are majestic but dangerous creatures. A mature elephant can easily flip over a two-tonne Land Rover. Our hearts never failed to skip a beat when we found ourselves sandwiched amongst a herd.

On our journey, we were charged by lone bull elephants twice. We also saw many other vehicles charged by them.

And each experience was terrifying enough to make us want to pack up

and go home – at least in the moment!

Our advice: Always give wild animals, and especially elephants, distance. At least 50-100 metres is recommended, especially if you’re not with a trained guide. Try not to provoke animals by getting too close for the ‘perfect shot’, or by blowing the horn or flashing lights. Invest in a good zoom lens instead. And if you stumble upon an elephant or a herd, turn your engine off to avoid spooking them, while keeping an eye on an escape route.

Drive slowly, especially at dusk, to avoid surprising an elephant or rhino hidden in dense bush. A quick Google search of ‘elephant flips safari vehicle’ or ‘rhino charges tourists’ should be part of mandatory safari preparation!

While researching for this article, we discovered a lot of other travel articles recommending that people only book organised safaris through tour companies. One site even claimed that South Africa and Namibia were the only safe countries to go on a self-drive safari ‘in the entire continent of Africa’.

What a load of... bad advice. In a single year, we drove through national parks in 11 African countries, safely,

and without too much hassle. For those who don’t feel up to the challenge and the extra work of doing it yourself, then absolutely we recommend using a reputable tour company.

But here’s the secret they don’t want you to know: there is really nothing that complicated to self-driving. With preparation and some research before the trip, of course you can do it yourself. Even if you’ve never been to Africa before, you can plan and execute an amazing self-drive safari trip.

We’ve met plenty of fellow travellers and overlanders whose first experience in Africa was on a self-drive trip.

Land Rovers are popular vehicles all over the continent, and it’s possible to hire them fully equipped and ready for a safari experience.

If you’re concerned about what to pack, there’s no shortage of articles recommending what and how to pack.

If you’re worried about not being able

to spot wildlife, hire a local guide, stay in a lodge that organises game drives with guides, or buy a book on African wildlife and bring it with you.

Of course we recommend following some precautions. If you’re not taking your own Land Rover, then rent one

from a reputable company (check reviews) that offers insurance as part of the package. Terrain in many national parks can also be muddy and difficult – so just make sure those off-roading skills (and etiquette) are tip-top before heading off.

Also follow medical advice on vaccinations. Take out travel insurance.

Read travel guides and plan an itinerary. Ask fellow travellers (like us!) for advice. Be respectful and well-informed on the risks when you go. And don’t forget to have an amazing time!

ntarctica was the priority destination for Jen and Gav and, having explored its surface, the continent did not disappoint our expectant duo. But Antarctica was now behind them, and a rendezvous with the ‘First Lady’ was on the horizon.

Back in Buenos Aires, Ruby The Landy had been waiting for her owners to return. But once the gang was running at full strength again, there was a problem. Ruby, eager to get going, wanted to start her own trip south to Ushuaia, while Jen and Gav were suffering from a ‘hangover’ after such a thrilling time in Antarctica.

‘It took us a week to leave Buenos Aires, following our Antarctica trip, and we reminisced about the wonderful trip we had been on and the great people we had met,’ says Jen. ‘However we were happy to see Ruby and when we did get going again we covered a lot of ground as we wanted to take her to Ushuaia, where we had departed from on the boat.’

This was in the second week of January, when the Ruta Nacional 3 quickly became their new home. Ten days was all it took to get Ruby across 2,500 miles of South American highway.

They did have an audience, of course, consisting of ostriches, armadillos, roadrunners (no Wile E. Coyote, though) and guanacos. And they did fit in a couple of stops that gave them a few more memories for

‘Torres del Paine is a beautiful national park in Chilean Patagonia, full of mountains, turquoise lakes, icebergs, glaciers, rivers and forests. The Torres del Paine is made up of three distinctive granite peaks of the Paine mountain range or Paine Massif. They extend up to 2,500 metres above sea level, and are joined by the Cuernos del Paine,’ explains Jen. Ruby suffered a spot of bother one morning when a southern crested caracara bird landed on her bonnet and started tearing the rubber from the windscreen wipers. Gav strode into action like a white knight, and two new wipers were fitted promptly before departure.

Ruby, Jen and Gav next headed back into Argentina and towards El Calafate, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, where lies the Perito Moreno glacier. UJs and rear prop replaced on Ruby, Jen and Gav embarked on a few walks around the ice formation, which spans 250 sq km and 30 km in length. The average height of the glacier is 74 metres above the water of Lago Argentina.

Gav continues: ‘We travelled to a sheltered camping spot in Tres Lagos before making our way 350 miles north to the last town before the Chilean border, Los Antiguos, set on a stunning turquoise lake.’

From chilly surroundings to Chilean settings, Ruby, Jen and Gav still have much more to see. Catch them next month in The Landy as their South American tour nears its climax.

oday, the Land Rovers that appear from within the Solihull factory are embroiled with space-age interiors, featuring many cows, brushed metals and enough electronics to put the bridge of the Starship Enterprise to shame.

But not so long ago, Land Rovers possessed interiors with about as much luxury inside them as an outhouse.

Sometimes, the colourways matched what you’d find inside an outhouse, too, and there was very little in terms of in-car entertainment.

Discoverys and Range Rovers moved on, but even the Defenders of the Td5 era could be rather drab plac-

es to find yourself. Colin, who works with us here at The Landy, recently wanted to freshen up the cabin of his wonderful Defender. It was a smart truck on the outside, but opening the door only led to a dull interior seriously short on style.

Now we appreciate that Defenders shouldn’t be a fashion statement, but making the driving seat of the car you love a more comfortable and enjoyable place to be is surely reason enough to look at interior enhancement. And none do it better than Ruskin Design.

But why did Colin want to change the 90’s interior, and why go with Ruskin Design?

‘The interior in the Defender was bland – functional, but bland. I wanted something that could have come out of the factory today and wanted to

‘I’d seen some of Ruskin’s work at the Great British Land Rover Show and the quality of their work on previous Defenders. Their attention to detail is second to none and the materials they use are the best out there.’

Throughout the initial discussions, Paul, who heads up the design department at Ruskin, was in frequent communication with Colin in order to make sure both parties were on the

same wavelength, and a clear design brief could be outlined ready for Paul to go away and prepare some options for Colin.

The message from Colin was crystal: to keep the original themes of the vehicle, but enhancing the luxury along the way.

‘Paul was very good at consulting with me and also offered suggestions in case I hadn’t considered a particular idea myself,’ continues Colin. ‘Take the seats, for example. Rather than flashy and over the top bucket seats, he

proposed the idea of simply improving the original bolsters and seat bases to make them more comfortable.’

This would be a sympathetic retrim, which means there would be no loud and proud contrasting colours, but instead the creation of a cabin to blend perfectly with the rest of the Land Rover. That said, you can have vibrant and flamboyant colours put in your Land Rover, you can have whatever you want – that’s the beauty of Ruskin’s service. 5. It’s not just a case of fitting some fancy leather, you know! Here the bars for the backseats have been tidied up and resprayed to make sure everything is in top condition. They aren’t always sprayed, but these components are always tidied up with scratches removed being dealt with 6. Colin wanted a more comfortable seat, so the foam layers were bolstered to adapt the original seat, rather than fitting entirely new items month’s issue. It’s not just Defenders that Ruskin focus on either, as they’ve completed work on Range Rovers and Discoverys, alongside non-Land Rover vehicles too.

We love the work that Ruskin has put in on Colin’s 90 – and so, I hasten to add, does Colin. But to see the finished results you will need to be patient. This is the first segment

of a three-part series, going behind the scenes to highlight exactly what interior enhancement entails, and how Ruskin put together the wonderful cabins they’ve made previously, and now inside Colin’s Defender.

Throughout these pages you’ll see the very beginning of the re-trim and what ‘canvas’ the team had to work with, ending in our December issue with a look at the finished results. f something has only been produced for a short amount of time, there is a strong chance it could turn out to be desirable at some stage, regardless of whether it started off as something to detest and avoid.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine that appeared in the Series II between 1958 and 1961 is a good example of this.

Andy Walker of Alex Engineering owned one of these in his younger years and is perfectly qualified to tell you about living with such a machine.

‘All I can dispense on the two-litre diesel engine is from my experience of owning one. The engine was in my 1960 Series II that I purchased some 30 years ago (August 1987 seems to spring to mind).

‘For a spotty 16-year-old driver who could only drive around the fields at our yard, the engine was more than perfect. Only after passing my driving test did I really feel the full breath-tak-

ing performance of the 52bhp engine – or should that be breathless…

‘One of the many charming features of the engine in the Series II was the twin 6V batteries, which very nearly dragged it into life, but only on a hot day. If you wanted to drive your Land Rover on a cold day, you really needed a barrel of easy start. And because you spent so much time with the glow plugs on, they would need replacing on a regular basis.

‘I used to dream of driving down the M1 at 60mph. In reality, the motor could only muster 56mph while flatout on the motorway. The fuel economy was almost respectable, too, and I do remember only needing to fill up once a week and it costing £10. Mind you, this is £10 in the late Eighties!

‘Reliable engine? Well...

‘My Series II had a fairly big disaster on a trip to Wales. One of the piston rings broke up and climbed up the side

of the piston. I did manage to obtain new, genuine pistons and a gasket set from the Land Rover specialist in Iver, Buckinghamshire, called E.V.E Components (they closed years ago). The pistons were the last ones they had, so spares were scarce back in 1989, yet alone today.

‘I rebuilt the engine and it continued on until I removed it to replace it with the more popular Rover V8. The 2.0L engine was sold to a mate who fitted it into a 109” LWB One Ton. If it struggled in my 88” then it was completely out of its depth in the 109”. Consequently, it did kill itself in the 109” and I believe it was scrapped. Looking back now, I suppose it was a sad end to a now very rare engine.

‘In truth, the engine did everything it was built to do, but just not very well. Can we be too critical when you consider this was Land Rover’s first attempt at a diesel engine, though?

‘I wish I’d kept the old engine in a a bit of interest with the unit being so corner of the workshop as now I’d refit rare. In fact, I can’t remember the last it to my 88”. Now they command quite time I saw one in an original vehicle!

Series I (1948-1958)

I

f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

I

n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s

item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy.

The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985)

F

ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

P

ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion.

To mimic the civvy Series ma-

chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978)

O

nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)

T

he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are.

This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)

I

n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far.

It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel.

If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily

be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold.

The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard.

Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?

Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)

A

fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability.

These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper.

Some Tdi Defenders have received

galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy.

By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all.

Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

F

ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly.

Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples

of what many have been subject to.

Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces.

The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences.

With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-2016)

T

he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years.

Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders.

The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money.

You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£2500-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90).

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

W

e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles.

With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can

be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

M

ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

T

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s

in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors.

Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)

M

any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)

C

ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out

for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present)

I

f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)

M

uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present)

T

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling.

But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present)

W

hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job.

That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals.

Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)

T

he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

F

ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)

T

he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples.

A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present)

L

aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass.

Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better.

We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-

ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production.

New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though.

We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present)

B

rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make.

It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

£500-£3500 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98).

Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

DIESEL RUBICON NOT FOR B RITAIN Holy grail for off-roaders remains LHD only • Better news from n ext-gen Wrangler Limits on UK supply to end as production capacity is doubled for next Wrangler

ince the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler JK in 2006, enthusiasts in Britain have wished the factory would

combine the 2.8 CRD diesel engine with the Rubicon off-road spec package. It now does – but while there’s no apparent engineering barrier to doing so in right-hand drive, the company has confirmed that a Rubicon diesel won’t be available in the UK. The latest example of a diesel Rubicon to be shown in public appeared on the Jeep stand at Geneva in March, in the shape of a new special-edition version of the vehicle. Named the Recon, this gains a stronger front axle and

heavy-duty cast diff covers, adding yet more resilience to what is already a uniquely capable off-road vehicle. Further enhancements include a vented Power Dome bonnet, beneath which buyers on what we can still just about call mainland Europe will have a choice between the 2.8 CRD and 284bhp, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines.

Here in Britain, only the latter will be available, mated to a five-speed auto gearbox as standard.

Sales of the Rubicon Recon are now being rolled out across Jeep’s European markets. Prices are yet to be announced, however Jeep says it will be available in a wide range of paint colours.

Mini’s Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid will cost from £31,585 (before the government’s plug-in car grant) when it hits the road on 24 June. The 224bhp petrol-electric SUV claims 134.5mpg, 49g/km and a zero-emissions range of up to 25 miles.

As if to taunt British Wrangler fans yet further, Jeep’s stand at Geneva also featured this eye-catching modified Rubicon – diesel-engined, naturally.

The vehicle’s purpose was to demonstrate Mopar’s ONE off-road accessory pack. Featuring a 2” suspension lift, steering damper and 265/75R17 Hankook all-terrains on cast alloy rims, this kit is now available through Jeep’s dealer network for 2-door and 4-door Rubicon models – even though in the UK, the vehicle itself is not.

vehi Simply getting hold of vehicles has long been a problem own for would-be Wrangler owners in the UK – and with the demise of the Land Rover Defender, there are more of them than ever. Jeep has admitted that supply here needs to improve – and the company’s boss Michael Manly recently confirmed next-gen that ahead of the next-generation JL model starting production this autumn, the factory is gearing up for a near-100% rise in output.

The JL will come to the UK in 2018, with a double-cab pick-up version due to follow a year later. Specific model plans here remain unknown, however the US market is getting its first ever diesel – prompting optimism that when it comes here, the new Wrangler will at last be available with the right engine in Rubicon form.

Wran Prices for the new Wrangler are a long way from being finalised, however with better supply it is to be hoped that they will be more realistic than at present. The cheapest Wrangler currently costs £33,925 – almost double what it did when the current model was launched ten years ago.

Medium-sized seven-seat SUV promises modern tech and real off-road ability SSANGYONG’S OFF-ROAD HERITAGE continues to be writ large in its latest concept vehicle, the XAVL. A seven-seater based on 2015’s XAV concept, this will go into production in the near future.

Sitting between the current Korando and soon-to-be-replaced Rexton, Ssangyong says the XAVL will be ‘an authentic off-road SUV’.

It will be available in 1.5-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel forms, each with a choice of transmissions.

Inside, the vehicle promises a wide range of high-tech features.

Major functions can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, the passenger seats have a wi-fi hotspot and Link to Home technology allows you to warm up the oven, operate the central heating and so on from in the cabin.

Outside, the XAVL has a ‘tough, masculine exterior’. In the words

of Ssangyong boss Johng-sik Choi, it ‘takes its design inspiration from our iconic Korando model of the

1990s.’ We’ve included a picture of said Korando here so you can see the similarities for yourself…

Ssangyong has also revised its current Korando, with a new-look front end and a tough interior which can ‘handle the rough and tumble of family life.’

The vehicle now features LED running lights, 18” diamond-turned alloys and a more comfortable steering wheel.

Options include a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines and manual and auto gearboxes.

Four-wheel drive is on offer, as are several other safety features.

These updates will see the Korando through to the end of production; Ssangyong’s smallest SUV is due to be replaced two years from now.

Audi’s SQ7 is famous for the electrically powered 48-volt compressor allowing its 4.0 TDI engine to deliver 435bhp and 664lbf.ft from just 1000rpm. But the system also has a future in the company’s petrol-engined products – the first of which is the Q8 Sport Concept.

A four-seat coupe-SUV, this features a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine with the 48v changer in a mild hybrid system developing 470bhp and 516lbf.ft. As well as allowing a 4.7-seconds 0-62 time, Audi says this drivetrain gives the Q8 a range of more than 745 miles.

Audi says the TFSI-based hybrid system will be used on a wide range of its models in the future. The Q8, meanwhile, is strongly tipped to spawn a production model which will go on sale around a year from now.

Peugeot’s second-generation 3008 has been named Car of the Year 2017. The new SUV has already been ordered by almost 100,000 customers across Europe – however only a few choose the Hybrid4 model, which is the sole version with all-wheel drive.
