Although there are certainly some shades of grey involved here they definitely don’t add up to 50. So let’s celebrate six years of Range Rover Evoque production. And we’ll do that with a special edition, the Evoque Landmark.

Because it is a bit of a landmark for the smallest Range Rover. Six years, over 600,000 models built in the UK - 80% of them for export – and over 200 awards won. That’s quite an achievement and production and sales are rolling on strongly.

So Range Rover has celebrated with the Landmark, which comes in a fetching new shade called Moraine Blue. This is meant to be inspired by the placid turquoise lakes in the

Canadian Rocky Mountains. A suggestion for Moriarty Blue, inspired by the tumbling Reichenbach Falls where Sherlock Holmes fell to his death, came a poor second apparently.

If you’re not going through a blue period then you could get the paintwork in either Yulong White or Corris Grey. In fact, grey does seem to figure from here on in, not an easy colour to make upbeat. There’s Carpathian Grey on the panoramic roof, Gloss Dark Grey for the alloys, Graphite Atlas – that’s grey – for the grille, bonnet and so on and grey accents inside. About half a dozen shades of grey, which is a rubbish title for a book.

Inside, along with the Ebony leather seats, there is the latest tech, including the option of the 10in InControl Touch Pro infotainment system featuring a 4G wifi hotspot and

various apps. One of the apps is Remote Premium so you can check the vehicle’s status from your smartphone or smartwatch, and even control the cabin temperature before you get in.

Prices start at £39,000, for the Evoque Landmark Td4 manual.

So three cheers for six years, and here’s to many more. Huzzah!

Icon – The Iconic Book

An icon. Land Rovers get called that a lot. But in what sense? An icon is a symbol on your computer screen of a program or an option or whatever. Probably not that. An icon is a religious devotional painting.

Well, given how some feel about their Landies, it could be that. Or

it’s ‘a thing regarded as…worthy of veneration’ according to the Oxford Dictionary. It’s probably that one.

And now it’s a book, or at least it will be soon. Icon is the only approved Defender book, produced by Land Rover. The company made the announcement of the forthcoming book on 30 April this year, a date which is not a coincidence. It is, as you know – don’t you? – the date 69 years ago when the very first Land Rover was debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show. That’s right, that was back on 30 April 1948.

And the book will celebrate 70 years of Land Rover, on 30 April 2018. The lavish and high-quality hardback will bring new research to the Series and Defender Land Rov-

ers. Images you haven’t seen, interviews that were conducted just for the book, new artwork – it’s going to be a feast for all aficionados.

The foreword will be by Land Rover enthusiast Richard Hammond, and other names you’ll spot inside will include Bear Grylls and Ralph Lauren, to name just a couple.

But the book also interviews people on the production line, company execs and all those who made the Defender happen.

With more than 200 pages, all gloriously illustrated, this hardback should be on every enthusiast’s shelf.

t would be easy to dismiss this – Range Rover jumping on the bandwagon of boxer Anthony Joshua’s success. After his stunning defeat of the awesome Wladimir Klitschko, Joshua is now the unified world heavyweight boxing champion. But Range Rover were talking to Joshua about his bespoke SVO Range Rover long before the bout even took place.

A week before Joshua stepped into the ring at the beginning of an epic eleven-round battle, he finally took delivery of his very own Range Rover.

Coincidence? A week after getting his own Range Rover he wins the Super Title bout at Wembley? You decide.

He’d been heavily involved in the creative process of designing his own vehicle, with numerous visits to the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire. And then, a week before his most intense fight ever, he got to drive away

in his SVAutobiography Dynamic. You wouldn’t be in any doubt that it was Anthony Joshua’s.

It’s the first Range Rover ever to feature the new SVO Design Pack, which allows for further exterior personalisations, including one-off bumpers, vents and grille. Look closely and you’ll see Joshua’s signature on the chromed

The powerful and unique Range Rover is a perfect complement to Anthony Joshua MBE. Personally, I’d have been quite prepared to go into the ring against Wladimir Klitschko. So long as I was in one of SVO’s armour-plated, bullet-proof Range Rovers.

That Anthony Joshua got into the ring without that around him, and took a famous and remarkable victory, makes this Range Rover even more of a testimony to his bravery and skill.

One thing’s for sure – you can bet when he was asking for specific items to be put on his vehicle, there would be one saying uppermost in the sales exec looking up at the looming mountain of Joshua: the customer is always right.

he Billing Off Road Show has been running for about quarter of a century, so it’s fair to say they’ve got a rough handle on how it all works. This is one of those shows where, whatever other delights are on offer, people go to tackle the off-road courses. And this year there are two.

The Riverside Course was the original route, and that’s open this year for the first time in ten years. The Lakeside Course will be its usual very demanding self, with its mud run and other challenges.

While owners will be tackling these muddy and arduous courses, there will be plenty else to do for all the family, apart from watch the Land Rover they were hoping to go home in, sink up to its bonnet in muddy water.

There will be a whole series of demonstrations, trade stands, autojumble and more. There will even be a Toy Land Rover section for aspiring drivers and, for the adults among us, there will be live music in the evening with several breweries helping proceedings along.

Can I have a word...

O

ne of the priorities I’ve tried to instil into this publication during my time at the helm, is to cater for every single one of you out there that picks up The Landy, whether you pick up the paper each and every month, or if it happens to fall into your lap once in a blue moon when you fetch that new shock you’ve been after.

What I mean is that when you flick open this Green Oval bundle of joy and indulge in the fun between the sheets, there should be a Land Rover in here that appeals to each of you individually.

Naturally, our editorial is biased towards vehicles adored by the purist – the likes of the Stage 1 V8 (page 18) and ex-military Land Rover 90 (page 26) that we have in this edition illustrate this perfectly.

I’m keen to make sure we don’t neglect other models, too, other than the Defender. Sure, we all love the original Land Rover family of Series and Defender machines, but Discovery and Range Rover offer so much besides.

This brings me onto another point: the new Discovery 5.

I’m keen to incorporate newer metal into this publication as well, because quite frankly, what may seem ludicrously expensive and out of reach now, may well end up being your daily drive in 20 years’ time. That’s the beauty of depreciation.

Having driven the new Discovery I can tell you it’s brilliant. Awards will flow and there won’t be a single journalist in the land criticising its magnificence. Apart from its rear end...

However, the model I drove cost approximately £75,000. Not cheap – but then if you’re getting ‘the most capable vehicle Land Rover has ever produced’, should we really be complaining?

I do love it. I just know it may be 20 years before I can afford my own. Sigh.

Rising to the Challenge

F

ollowing its introduction last year, the eBay Car Challenge is back once more to follow three special restoration builds, which will use only parts and accessories found on the online giant’s website.

Two of the vehicles entered in the challenge – one a 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto and the other a 1974 VW Camper Van – are of little interest to us here, but the third vehicle – a 1964 Series IIA – is.

The Land Rover in question goes by the name of ‘Bertha’, and belongs to a certain Dan Goude who bought the car aged just 18. He turned 40 last year and has still yet to finish Bertha off.

Although not from the lack of trying!

As any restorer knows who’s

attempted to breathe life back into a Land Rover, you’re bound to face the odd hiccup along the way, and Dan has been no different. Last year, for example, plans were in place for Bertha to be completed by the time Dan hit the big 4-0. Unfortunately, a head gasket failure blew out more than just the candles. Not only that, but Dan has had to face his own battles in the last 12 months.

In 2016 he admitted himself to hospital through A+E and was told he had sepsis, a life-threatening condition that meant Dan had to be put into an induced coma and on a life support machine. Things weren’t looking great, but we’re happy to report Dan is alive and well today.

Now, armed with a £4,000 budget from eBay and a deadline of 10 July, Dan and Bertha are going through a state of ‘rebirth’ together as they aim to finish what they started all those years ago.

Bertha is a 24volt FFR Series IIA and will be receiving an engine strip down and overhaul, a new fuel tank and there will be plenty of attention spent on her body. Dents and cracks will disappear and a fresh lick of paint should bring Bertha back to her best.

We will be closely following the progress of Dan’s eBay-fuelled restoration over the course of the next couple of months, and look forward to seeing both Dan and Bertha back up to 100%.

and Rover owners need to remain vigilant after numerous reports have surfaced regarding fake Defender headlights claiming to have the correct markings flooding the market.

For a headlight to be legal, it must abide by various legislation, most notably with Vehicle Lighting Regulations and the UN ECE Vehicle Harmonisation rulings. Search for ‘R48 112’ in Google and you should be able to research further.

Now, back to the problem at hand.

Various online retail sites seem to be

overwhelmed by products making a mockery of the laws we have in order to maintain the best levels of road safety.

The E-mark designates that the light is compliant with European legislation and there are three key elements you need to look out for. Firstly there is the regulation or amendment number, and secondly, there is a letter E in a circle which should also have a number within the circle to outline the country that has approved the light. Plus, alongside these you should be able to see a separate approval number.

Simply having ‘DOT SAE’ and an ‘E’

in a circle is not enough to make the light legal. And if you have an accident at night, it’s feasible that an insurance company could declare your policy void if it found you to have been travelling with illegal headlights.

There are many pitfalls out there for those who want a cheap LED light upgrade, but don’t know what they are looking for. Please double-check what you are fitting to your Land Rover, and if you’d like more information on the rules and regulations you need to comply with, please head to www. legislation.gov.uk

Ingenious Ingenium

T

he Engine Manufacturing Centre – the EMC – is a pretty remarkable, £1bn plant that is so modern and so flexible that it produces the engines for all three of Jaguar Land Rover’s UK vehicle plants. As we know, the EMC has been making the 2.0-litre turbodiesel Ingenium unit for some time but now it has just produced a new version – the Ingenium petrol engine.

It’s a four-cylinder 2.0-litre unit that is certainly capable of producing huge horsepower. In 2018 it will power the Jaguar F-Type sports car, giving it 295bhp (300PS). So a slightly less tuned and stressed version should be just the thing for a Land Rover, given that the future of diesel seems to be becoming increasingly murky.

However, the low-emission diesel Ingenium units will still have their place in the market for years to come, alongside the four-cylinder petrol engine, which will be produced in a range of power outputs. Look out for them appearing in vehicles this summer.

Trevor Leeks, EMC Operations Director, said: ‘The start of petrol production marks an important milestone for the plant as we move to providing a suite of ultra-low emission, high-performance petrol and diesel engines to power the full Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle line-up now and in the future.

‘Importantly, it also showcases the incredible impact Jaguar Land Rover has had on the local economy with the creation of the 1,400 skilled jobs promised when we opened the plant in 2013. In fact we will be welcoming our 1,400th employee at the end of this month.’

2 Plus is better than 1 We’re sure most of you reading this will be aware of the company aptly named Goodwinch, in fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if a few of you nodding have a stack of receipts hidden away somewhere with their logo on them.

As is evident from their company name, they manufacture winches which are rather good. However, what if you don’t want to settle just for ‘good’ and you want say, a great winch?

Sealey has come up with some hi-viz green workshop trolleys, but a simple glance will let you know that. Bright aren’t they? They’re also pretty useful and adaptable things.

They have the rather eyecatching titles of CX109HV and CX110HV, and they have lots of holes to stow big drills and other power tools that you don’t want to keep putting away in a tool chest.

You can wheel the trolleys around on robust castors, and they can take smaller vehicle components since they have a load capacity of 160kg.

Then of course there’s the old AP760MHV, our favourite, which has a couple of shelves and a lockable gas-sprung lid so you can keep things safe while your rebuild goes on. And on.

With two shelves rolling on ball bearings, and a screwdriver holder at the end this is just the thing to have around you as you attempt to restore that vision of rust and old paint to show-quality perfection.

Wear out or rust out Britpart (www.britpart.com) has now got a whole range of ways to stop your Land Rover rusting. None of them involves moving to the Sahara although, to be fair, that would work.

Should you not be able to do this for some reason, one of the best alternatives is to set about your pride and joy with a mix of products that address specific issues in the whole oxidation process. Britpart has got quite a lot of bases covered here, since the company understands that not everyone has access to compressors, air supply and so on in their shed – we’ve barely got access to air when the door is shut, so this is certainly for us.

Protection If you’ve got a set of manky steels on your Defender, this probably isn’t very interesting to you. But if you’re running a set of alloys, particularly if they’re multi-spoked, then this could be a passport to a slightly easier life.

Cleaning alloys is a right chore, isn’t it? Particularly the front pair which seem to have all that brake dust baked on. Not to mention the bits of earth and detritus from that last pay and play day which also seems to have been baked on with a blowtorch. Autoglym looked at this situation and thought about it.

Then they went to the race track.

Autoglym works with a lot of race teams in things like single-seaters and BTCC. For them, brake dust all but welding itself to the racing rims isn’t just unsightly, it’s also a dynamic issue.

So Autoglym went and scratched its collective head and came up with the thought that, really, it would be better if the rims didn’t get all that dust and debris on them in the first place.

Like, duh, yeah. But Autoglym carried that thought through, and the result is the new Wheel Protector.

What you do is you clean the alloys and make sure they’re really dry. Then you spray on a thin coat of Autoglym Wheel Protector to each wheel.

This creates what they call a superhydrophobic durable barrier. Which means simply that the dust and muck won’t stick to the wheel in the first place, or at least not nearly as much of it.

You can be reasonably sure that if race teams, with wheels and brakes turning at insane temperatures, are using this stuff it’s got to work on your Green Oval machine. Autoglym is so confident of its product that it asks you to take the 50/50 Challenge, where you spray just half a wheel and then look at it a week later to see the difference.

Sounds like you’ll now have some extra time on Sunday morning. A pretty good result for an outlay of £10.25 a can.

Friends can be great, but they can also be a bad influence on you every once in a while. Like when they’ve found another Land Rover for you to get besotted with, for instance. Just ask Martin Okell, who knows only too well Left: When your friends present you with this and tell you it’s a great idea... ‘It’s just a little project,’ he said, ‘you’ll have it up and running in no time!’ he said. Bloody “mates”!

hen we’re growing up, as kids we tend to have that one friend who is always a bit of a rogue; someone who is always looking to venture onto the wrong side of their parents – or the law. Peer pressure is a bitch, though, isn’t it, and on occasions you can’t help but join your scallywag of an acquaintance in the dark arts.

You’d like to think we grow up and get out of egging on our friends to be irresponsible or immature, but, as we

There’s still Series III elements to the design – like the door handles and split windscreen – but that flush front end is pure 90/110 know, some things will never change. If anyone has come across the card game labelled the Ring of Fire, then I’ve no doubt you’ll be well aware of just how bad things can get when you need to ‘take one for the team’.

It’s a similar story within our circle of Land Rover friends. For example, when John turns up in the Series IIA Soft Top he’s just finished restoring and you look over at the crumpled shed that is your 109, you can bet your life there will be a few frantic

searches through the pages of eBay that night – either for parts or an allnew vehicle altogether.

Sometimes your ‘mate’ may even try to rope you into a project with him, because ‘two heads are better than one’. What your pal really means when he says those words is, ‘two wallets are better than one’. It’s like strapping yourself to the guy who jumped out of the plane without a parachute.

– and his friends know it. So when his friend, Tony Sinclair, who also runs Alldrive Classic 4x4, phoned up to tell Martin he thought he’d found something that might interest him, the writing on the wall was already dry.

‘I went to see Tony, who said he might have something to interest me around the back,’ says Martin. ‘In my head I was just thinking, “Oh God, here we go again!”’ he smiles, while rolling his eyes.

We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk What lay in store for our impressionable friend was a Stage 1 V8, a machine that bridged the transition from the Series Land Rovers to the One Ten and Ninety models that succeeded them.

As Martin recalls, this was a while back, around 2010. ‘Hmm, I’m a sucker for V8s,’ says Martin shaking his head.

‘Before I knew it, the blinkers went on and the deal was done,’ he elaborates.

‘Whatever state it was in, it was going to be mine. We got there, it wasn’t running, the previous owner had started to strip the vehicle and only two doors were bolted on at the time, with the other panels stored inside.’

So maybe the Stage 1 V8 was a few sandwiches short of a picnic – or was that Martin?

Either way, it wasn’t a total gamble.

It’s not like walking up to a roulette table and placing your life savings on red. Close though. Still, seeing as the chassis itself was made of sterner stuff than Martin when he gets around Land Rovers, it was all looking good.

The rear crossmember was a bit scabby, but name me an old Landy that hasn’t suffered here.

Standing there with a white exterior trying to gleam through, it was decided that the vehicle should be put through a rebuild and back onto its feet once more. The good fortune kept on coming, however, with there being no need to remove the rear tub, and when it came to that 3.5-litre Rover V8, a thorough service was all that was required.

‘I’ve kept the exterior fairly normal, but it’s inside that has changed slightly with the Range Rover Classic seats fitted all the way through, and a slight modification to the rear wheelarches,’ states Martin.

This Stage 1 V8 is running on LPG, so there’s a gas tank at the rear, while this is also one of Solihull’s eight-cylinder motors using the Stromberg carburettors. It’s the engine that came with the vehicle, but there’s a bit of

mystery around the exact identity of this machine.

‘It’s on the original VIN plate while the gearbox number reads 004.

There are little anomalies about the vehicle to suggest this could be a BBC evaluation vehicle previously used in North Africa. There are signs pointing towards it being part of the special developments team,’ Martin tells me.

‘Gaydon and Dunsfold don’t seem to recognise the vehicle, though – they don’t think it exists,’ he says glancing back. ‘Well, I’m stood next to it!’

Whatever the history, it’s the future that Martin will look to with his rather exclusive Land Rover.

‘Being a Stage 1, it is a rare vehicle – it’s off the norm and I fancied the challenge to do it up. Plus the price was right,’ says Martin. ‘I wanted to get it into a good working order – it deserved that at the very least.’

I had the panels off and was painting them in a tent in the garden and they were stood in the hallway for a while.

The tripping over helped give me the incentive to finish what I’d started’ chortles Martin.

This Stage 1 of Martin’s is very much a pleasure vehicle and it’s on those rare sunny mornings that he’ll think to himself that a drive in the V8 is long overdue. It’s funny, we haven’t featured a Stage 1 V8 in this publication before, yet certainly from a personal point of view, I’ve always thrown them loving glances when I’ve seen these atypical machines out in the world.

I find their design brilliant, in that it merges traits of the Series III with the later One Ten. Notice the split windscreen but the flush front end beautiful. With this Land Rover, you don’t have to choose between Series or Defender styling. You can have

your cake and eat it. But if you had to choose between them?

‘I’d say I prefer Series vehicles,’ claims Martin, ‘Although the wife runs a Defender, so there’s one never

Still Discovering

Over the last 28 years, the Discovery has become a firm favourite among the Land Rover fraternity. Now, in its fifth generation, has the Discovery forgotten its roots, or is this king still ruling the roost?

M

ost of you informed and wonderful readers will agree with me that the Discovery 1 was the vehicle to save Land Rover at the very end of the 1980s. It filled the gap between the upmarket and expensive Range Rover and the utilitarian Ninety and One Ten. These days, there are far fewer worries surrounding the company’s financial state. In fact, Solihull’s accountants are probably on a beach in the Bahamas somewhere, consuming margaritas as they observe Jaguar Land Rover’s relentless march from strength to strength.

There is one slight issue, however.

And that is the absence of Land Rover’s long-serving icon, the Defender.

That means the Discovery family must come to Land Rover’s aid once more. And this latest fifth-generation Discovery is set to deputise as the most capable and versatile vehicle Solihull has ever produced. That’s Land Rover’s own claim, not mine.

There were no surprises when pictures of the Disco 5 first surfaced.

It’s not technically called the Discovery 5, but for the sake of clarity that’s what

Normally, the kids take after their parents, not the other way around.

But in this case the new Disco has adopted styling cues from its smaller brother, the Discovery Sport. Taller, wider and with the familiar ancestral traits from previous generation Discoverys like the stepped roof, the D5 is clearly the top dog in what is Land Rover’s most rounded model family.

I do miss the chunkiness of the old Discovery 3 and 4, though…

Crucially, while it’s obviously another handsome vehicle designed

by JLR’s styling department, there’s always the risk that someone will label it, ‘just a rebadged Range Rover’.

There’s no denying that this Discovery looks closer in relation to its poshest relations than before, especially at the front. And as for that rear end, well, I know not everyone is a fan, but I quite like it – here it does distance itself from the Range Rovers.

What this Discovery needs to do, though, is drive like a Discovery. There needs to be segregation in the way it drives compared to the Range Rover.

Unlike in the old Discovery 4, you have a choice of engines ranging from the 240hp 2.0-litre Sd4 diesel to the 340hp 3.0-litre Si6 petrol unit. We tested the one in between, a 258hp 3.0-litre Td6 version, and while that doesn’t have significantly more power than the Sd4 engine, there is around 20% more torque on tap (443lbf.ft against 369lbf. ft), which could prove vital if the Discovery is to keep on reaping towcar awards for another decade.

There’s also some clever storage compartments in this new Discovery, most notably if you slide the gloss black cover open in the centre to reveal the cup holders, and then slide the cup holder tray itself back towards the dash. A space capable of swallowing an iPad is revealed. Neat

Simply put, the Td6 engine is superb.

It’s essentially the same unit as the old SDV6 and does a stupendous job of hauling this huge wedge of metal up to sprint speed in no time at all.

Having shed 480kg in weight over the old Disco 4, it’s no wonder this new Discovery feels lighter on its feet. This is no longer a car that is just quick for an SUV, it’s quick full stop. Naturally, it’s no featherweight still, so you can’t start thinking you’re in a sports car – but you can at least think heavyweight boxer rather than sumo wrestler.

There’s more good news too as each engine is mated to the brilliant eightspeed ZF gearbox. So far, so good – you can see why Land Rover has already taken 25,000 orders globally.

On the road, the Discovery 5 feels very composed. It still has that Discovery 4 glide, and it’s very easy to settle into. I can imagine seeing off copious amounts of long journeys in this and after two hours in the hot seat, I too was still feeling radiant and ready for action.

The steering is nicely weighted for a vehicle this size, making it easy to position in town and when entering the sort of bends you’ll find on your average B-road. Again, it’s easy to cover ground quickly. Yes, there will be a little body roll in the corners, but it’s minimal and to be expected when you’re pressing on in a vehicle of this stature. Big is one conclusion everyone seems to draw from their initial greeting with the Disco 5.

I tell you that driving this Land Rover reminded me of the Discovery 4.

That’s a promising start, as you want it to feel like a Discovery and not just a Range Rover with different lettering on the bonnet.

And yes, it feels multi-purpose. It feels versatile. It feels Discovery.

Admittedly, when you sit in the driver’s seat of the new Disco, the fact that it utilises the same steering wheel and switchgear as the Range Rover can undermine that argument. It feels as if Land Rover has simply replaced the lettering on the steering wheel as it kicks on with its mission to create a clear-cut set of model families.

But having parts from a car that is significantly more expensive is surely a string to the Discovery’s bow… could it, though, be a thorn in the side of the Range Rover?

Being the new kid on the block, the Discovery has other perks too. The

Intelligent Seat Fold system, which allows you to raise or lower the middle and back rows of seats all at the touch of a button; the stadium seating that means the (very usable) back row gets as good a view of the road ahead as the driver; the on-board wi-fi and hundred different USB slots to help kids keep shtum for weeks. There’s even heated seats for every single row and bum.

Everyone should be safe, too, as you carry the kiddiewinks to school in a vehicle awarded with a full five-star NCAP safety rating.

Forget the party pieces and on-road manners for a moment, though. Take the Discovery 5 off-road and you understand why its makers are singing like a bunch of canaries about it.

gorithms, combined with All-Terrain Progress Control, Hill Descent Control and cameras on every panel, make you feel as omniscient as God but mean it can all feel a little disconnected. In an age where we’re supposed to be more connected than ever, you can’t help but see the irony.

However, all these electronic aids mean no terrain is safe from the reach of the Discovery. Even over severe rocks, the Discovery brings a level of composure, while traction control settings can adjust automatically to solve the equation the landscape poses ahead. Discovery 5 would go further than a Disco 1 or 2 could manage, at least in standard spec.

A 900mm wading depth also enables the Discovery to do a good impression of a narrowboat heading down the Shropshire Union Canal.

Nevertheless, the new Discovery looks and moves much better than a boat. The fresh exterior, while not to everyone’s taste, has sharpened the Disco up over its predecessor. Yet it still feels like a Disco 4 – only nimbler.

The problem with the Discovery is the Range Rover. Or more accurately, the Range Rover’s problem is the Discovery. The version we drove was a Td6 HSE Luxury: yours for £75,965.

Yes, for a Discovery!

This is a seriously high-spec machine, so it’s lavished with toys and echoes the Range Rover with some of the many touches around its cabin.

With the Discovery being such an all encompassing vehicle, however, with seven usable seats, brilliant and innovative storage space, luxury taken straight from the Range Rover and more capability than you’ve ever seen in a thing with four wheels, why would you spend possibly an extra £25,000 on the big one?

The answer is that snob value is a powerful thing. And you can expect the Range Rover to keep on moving upmarket. With what may just be the greatest ever Discovery on its case, it might have to.

ast month we showed just how much money you can throw at Land Rover to get your hands on a convertible that has a Green Oval badge pinned to its grille. The Evoque Convertible, however, is not going to do your street cred any good when you turn up for your next excursion around the lanes of North Wales, and you’ll have said goodbye to at least £47,555 in the process.

Okay, so maybe an Evoque Convertible owner is never going to go laning (when sober), but why not invest in a soft-top Landy that looks the part, is the part, and costs a mere tenth of the Evoque’s price tag?

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott was indeed under 10% of the Evoque’s figure, but with this you’re buying a 90, a real icon to treasure and not something more akin to posing in past Harrods.

Alright, if I’m being honest, this is a 90 that isn’t going to be winning any awards for being concours, or certainly not for a while anyway. But that’s just the light bulb we’re trying to spark in that head of yours: why not have a bit of fun – laning, off-roading abroad, driving round to shows and country fares – then put it into the workshop for a restoration job which you’ll enjoy for entirely different reasons! Come on, you know it makes sense.

Early 90s (eggheads will know that the Defender name only emerged after 1990) are fast becoming classics in their own right and it’s worth holding

onto those examples still looking tidy and unmolested by some playday warlord. Buying ex-military isn’t a bad place to start either if you’re currently without that feeling of accomplishment in your life, ie a 90.

Something used by the military is something well maintained. If a vehicle is in bad condition after military use, the chances are there’s not much of the vehicle left having either been blown to smithereens or with more holes rifled through the body than a block of cartoon cheese.

Of course, having a couple of war wounds gives the vehicle a bit of history and you can blag it to your friends as ‘the enhancing of the Land Rover’s patina’.

This here is a 1986-registered 2.5-litre naturally aspirated diesel and, on start up from cold, it can produce quite a wisp of cloud from its exhaust. However, once the engine was warmed through and I took the 90 on a little run, both it and I were as happy as a lieutenant playing paintball.

Working the five-speed manual ‘box was a delight and in the space of five minutes I’d had a more engaging experience than I’d ever have in five years owning the Evoque. You can’t beat an analogue involvement. These are the type of vehicles that tap into the very physicality of operating a machine: balancing a clutch, inputting precise commands on the transmission and handling the wheel of a Land Rover with no power steering, where only your biceps can help you steer this brute onto the correct course. I love it.

‘This particular Land Rover had just the one owner since its release from the Ministry of Defence, with the keeper holding onto it for around 14 years or so,’ says Adam Norton, owner of Norton Automotive.

‘We don’t know the exact release date but we estimate it to be around the early 2000s and it has been used on a smallholding for much of the period in between. The owner was a strange fellow, born in South Africa and living in Scotland – his mix of accents was quite brilliant!’

Our previous owner also had the sense to use the 90 for a little bit of fun, adding some all-terrain tyres and modular wheels to the truck alongside a set of rock sliders. Adam gave the exterior a new lick of paint, opting for the different and personally desirable NATO Desert Sand colour option.

While we’ll leave the Evoque to the fashionistas out there, it’s difficult to deny that the black Exmoor Trim hood goes nicely with the sandy bodywork and I’m a sucker for a bonnet-mounted spare wheel. I’d take out the dodgy Sony stereo, though, and try and bring back originality to the 90 going forwards.

Naturally, when buying any Land Rover, you want to be checking the condition inside, outside, underneath and anywhere in between. This one

had a good chassis with a recently fitted rear crossmember. And if you’re buying ex-MOD, remember that the speedo and odometer are most likely to be optimised for kilometres, not miles.

This pre-Defender has done 160,000 miles but reads approximately 260,000 kilometres. It’s just another thing to note when browsing to buy.

The lucky owner who now runs this Land Rover will, I’m sure, have had the canvas rolled up and enjoyed a summer evening’s blast down his local rural paradise. I say blast, but to be honest this is a Land Rover that prefers to plod rather than surge. It’s a very reliable engine, hence why the military used them for so long, although if you want to get a move on trying to reach your destination, you’re probably not in the market for a Land Rover!

Summer’s here – enjoy it. Take the roof down and head down your favourite green lane, breathe in the countryside air and, when September comes, slide your 90 into the workshop. Spend those winter months doing little adjustments here and there; replace tired parts and smarten her up or even strip it down for a full rebuild on a galvanised chassis.

Either way, whether you’re driving with the wind whistling through your cabin or listening to the wind rustling around the outside of your shed as you tinker away, the thrills and memories will be stacking up by the tub-load.

Being a soft-top, just try to make sure that’s the only thing accumulating in your 90’s rear.

Maybe, just maybe, this is John’s best masterpiece, his own personal Oscar.

It belongs to Harry Sherrard, a motorsport connoiseur – and he’s not one to shy away from a challenge…

W

hen someone can look back on their life and pinpoint instances when they worked for Eddie Jordan, shared the same stretch of asphalt as Ayrton Senna and spent time being paid to demonstrate the latest Aston Martins and Ferraris of the day, you may wonder how the bloody hell a Td5 Discovery would fit into their story.

It’s fair to say that Harry Sherrard is well versed in the world of motorsport.

Born in Northern Ireland and growing up on a dairy farm, Harry made a beeline for the UK in his early years with a thirst that would only be quenched by his involvement in the racing scene in championships such as Formula Ford.

Tales of his exploits throughout his motorsport story can be enjoyed in his

own book, Taking Part. I recommend it highly, not least for some of the eyebrow-raising anecdotes.

But while accounts of F1 legends and Ferraris is all very well, I’d like to know – as I’m sure you would – why Harry bought a Discovery 2 in 2003.

Of course, Discoverys are fantastic tow cars and, with any motorsport, there is often the need to lug your prized possession to and from the circuit.

But Discoverys also make for brilliant everyday cars and Harry has run Land Rovers as his daily drive since.

‘This was my first Land Rover,’ explains Harry. ‘And we got into the off-roading through having the Disco 2.’ This is no surprise to us as owning a Land Rover is a ticket into a whole new community and, with Harry, he

was always going to find a way to test a vehicle’s limits.

‘We visited Slindon and started laning with the Sussex clubs,’ recalls Harry. ‘While exploring the local green lanes we added a few mods as you do, it was incremental really and gradually built up over time before we started taking it on overseas tours to Morocco, Tunisia and Iceland.’

What the vehicle has now built up to is a full expedition G4 replica, consisting of an extensive raft of kit with overland travel at the centre of each item’s purpose. Fridge, water tank and Maggiolina roof tent are just a few items that help make this Discovery a self-sufficient vehicle for Harry and his wife, Lorraine, and they found the additions more than useful

‘We travelled with Impala Adventures, a long-established operator in the overlanding business,’ claims Harry. ‘The vehicles need to be equipped for wild camping. Although there are campsites of sorts in Morocco, in the remoter parts they are pretty basic and you need to be self-reliant.

‘For us, overland trips are a perfect balance, combining adventure, driving challenges, seeing dramatic landscapes, camping under the stars, and experiencing different cultures.’

Harry and Lorraine haven’t just sampled the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara either, as in the summer of 2008 they took part in an Icelandic expedition, organised and run by Paul Blackburn of One Life Adventures.

As Harry notes, Iceland in the summer time isn’t all that icy! The highlands and volcanoes are green with vegetation not snow, and the black sand desert offers up a landscape reminiscent of the moon’s surface.

‘In summer, away from the black sand desert, Iceland is a patchwork of glacial melt rivers, and some of the most exciting and demanding driving came in fording the rivers, often with water up to or even over the bonnet,’ says Harry.

Overlanding and a sense of adventure was something Harry and Lorraine clearly enjoyed, but why stick with relaxing expeditions when you can put yourself through gruelling rallies that push man and machine to the very edge?

Aside from the fridge and gas cooker that all help when you’re huddled around the campfire at night, there’s a stack of modifications on this Discovery to help when you’re less stationary.

Today, the G4 (as it is known to the Sherrards) boasts a reconditioned and uprated automatic gearbox from Ashcroft Transmissions with a diff lock conversion carried out by the same experts, an ARB locker at the rear Continued overleaf

Throw in the usual under-body protection, heavy-duty bits ‘n’ bobs, a Superwinch, split-charge system, sand ladders and Fox +2” motorsport shock absorbers with remote reservoirs and this is a vehicle you’d feel confident of tackling anything in.

The fresh gearbox was not fitted before Harry and Lorraine tackled the Tuareg Rally, but as a consequence of the old one failing out there. This was when the G4 was primed for its own motorsport escapades and the Tuareg Rally is an event born from the spirit

of the Dakar and hosted on alternating years in the Maghreb countries of Morocco and Tunisia.

‘It may be the Dakar’s baby brother, but believe me this is a seriously tough event!’ says Harry. ‘The terrain is hugely varied, from rocky mountain tracks, to sand rivers, to dried salt lakes, to fast desert pistes, to wadis, and of course sand dunes of all shapes and sizes.’

Cutting your way through dunes like a sidewinder snake and facing the midday heat is all part of the challenge, but your vehicle is put through even more pain – and sometimes injuries can be sustained.

But there is one man based in Zagora

– a famous pit stop for desert rallies and 4x4 expeditions – who is more than likely able to get you back on track.

‘In the world of twisted subframes, leaking differentials and broken halfshafts, one man rules supreme: Aziz,’ says Harry.

This is a man renowned for his work upon the vehicles of competitors from all different types of rallying events, but most notably when the Paris–Dakar rally passed through Zagora itself prior to the event seeking a new home in South America from 2009.

‘We’d first been customers of Garage Iriki [Aziz’s workshop] in 2006, on our initial Saharan trip. So when on the

first day of the Tuareg Rally in 2015 we damaged the propshaft and underside of the G4 rally vehicle when crossing a stony wadi, who were we going to call?

It was the ‘no-problem-too-big’ attitude and Aziz’s tireless work through the early hours with his assistants that got Harry and Lorraine onto the start line of Day Two of the Tuareg Rally, managing to source replacement parts seemingly out of nowhere in short spaces of time to keep the dreams of rally entrants alive. Sadly, the gearbox eventually gave up on this Disco which is why it has been given a reconditioned unit since being back on home soil.

Harry continues: ‘In terms of what has been the most enjoyable adventure, let’s just say all of the above. The motorsport element has been an adrenalin fix and more intense, while the overlanding was more relaxed and you spent time interacting with the people and having a more cultural experience.

‘For the time being, our Land Rover chapter is finished with for now. I think it’s time to move the Discovery on, though, because I feel like we’ve done everything that we can with it.

I’m not the sort of person who sticks to one thing.’

While Harry will no doubt move onto another project - another way in which to get his motorsport fix - the Discovery you see here, like its owner and every other Solihull sensation, has never shied away from a challenge.

As Harry says himself, at present he and wife Lorraine have reached a stopgap in their Land Rover chapter. So the Discovery you see before you is currently up for sale and looking for a new owner with whom to carry on exploring the world.

You may recall a feature we ran on Tom Parker and his Disco last autumn (Issue 34), as he was preparing for a trip to the most northerly point in Europe all in the name of defeating cancer. Well, he and his partner, Rosie, prepared, travelled and conquered their mission and now back in the UK, we’ve been catching up with this pair of crusaders

C

ast your mind back to February of this year. Long time ago, right? Well, hopefully for your partner they may remember it more vividly, perhaps because of your efforts on Valentine’s Day… or lack of?

Whichever side of the fence you fall, rightly or wrongly, it’s safe to assume you spent your February rather differently to Tom Parker and Rosie Griffiths. Their remedy to blow away the January blues was a 5,000-mile round trip during the peak of Scandinavian winter, all to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Beginning in Cheltenham, the first leg of their journey took them across the country to Harwich International Port, where they soon hopped onto a ferry and made their way over the North Sea to the Netherlands.

After making their way onto the

continent, they took the small journey inland to Amsterdam, where they had the chance to indulge in a spot of sightseeing. Once they’d taken in a little of what ‘The Venice of the North’ had to offer, they carried on through Germany and into Denmark.

The following day they notched their first landmark, as they headed along the magnificent Øresund Bridge that connects Copenhagen with Malmö, Sweden. Before long they had reached another country, in Norway, and at this point, I hand you over to Tom, who picks up from here.

‘In my infinite wisdom, I decided to take the route north of Oslo, which, if you’re familiar with Scandinavia, isn’t such a great idea! You’ve basically got a corridor with Norway on the west coast and Sweden to the east. The latter has a major dual carriageway route all the way up the coast, whereas the former

does not. And I made the mistake of giving it a go anyway!’ laughs Tom. After quite literally running out of road in Norway, they officially entered the Arctic Circle after crossing through Sweden and Finland, which meant the final resting place was now within touching distance.

Another 34 hours later and they had reached Nordkapp. This made it seven countries in just shy of seven days, which by my watch, makes for pretty good progress when a significant amount of miles has been done on ice!

The fuel behind the trip, for both Tom and Rosie, was to raise some important funds for Cancer Research UK. When I caught up with him, he gave us an update on the fundraising totals. He explained, ‘It’s raised £880 so far, and I’m very happy that we’ve managed to raise this amount already

as it is something that has affected both of our families. I know my Nan would be proud!’

Speaking of Rosie, those of you with eagle eyes out there may have been keeping a watch on their social media pages and on receiving news that the couple reached Nordkapp, there was more than one reason for the pair to celebrate. Yes, Rosie is no longer just Tom’s partner, but his fiancé!

So, when asking him how on earth he’d kept it quiet all the all the way up there, his response shed light on a hidden talent that many of you reading this may also unknowingly possess.

‘I’ve wanted to pop the question for a little while and it just seemed like the perfect moment for it. I’m pretty good at keeping secrets you see… not in a bad way, though, usually just about how much I’ve spent on Landy parts!’ chuckles Tom.

33 ‘Luckily, we took the earlier convoy at 11am, which gave me a window before the place got flooded with tourists. I can still remember the change in her expression, from shivering to smiling and crying. Truly a moment we’ll never forget.’

One tourist even managed to scurry through the snow to pass on his congratulations to the happy couple

and give some very wise words, saying ‘You may forget the date – but you’ll never forget the place.’ That man may well be proved right.

Reflecting on the journey as a whole, Tom was overwhelmingly positive.

‘We’ve seen some absolutely amazing sights and I’d like to think we experienced exactly what we set out to, plus some more!’ he exclaimed. ‘The actual

destination was a very small part of our trip and along the way, we saw everything from Moose to Reindeer, which were quite unexpected when you are driving around a bend on sheet ice in the pitch black!’

However, there was one main, albeit anticipated, difficulty they had to face head-on: the weather. And when we say, ‘weather’ we’re not implying a cool

breeze and intermittent rain showers here. Oh no. Tom made the conditions crystal clear. ‘Well in Karasjok, Norway it was around -30c, which is supposedly mild at that time of year, so yes, it does get a little chilly!’ informs Tom. Apparently, the pair both faired differently with this scenario. ‘Personally, I was fine,’ says Tom, ‘But the Fiancé doesn’t really like the cold. I think

there may have been the one occasion where the question was raised on why she agreed to come with me in the first place! However, with plenty of blankets and heated seats she was happy.’ Somehow, we can’t imagine the proposal being quite so special if Tom had got down on one knee in front of a Nordkapp snowman…

The Overland Bazaar

In Tents Once upon a time I used to go on family summer holidays. It involved getting up before dawn, putting on new scratchy jeans and getting in the back of the family car laden with camping equipment but bereft of any rear seat belts. We’d motor up to somewhere unbelievably wet and grey, like Scotland or Wales. Basically, anywhere that rain could be guaranteed.

Having been in the car all day, we three children would then have to get out, stiff and hungry, and help my, by now, very tired and fractious father set up the tent. One year he’d managed to get an old circus tent.

It had been free. We could see why.

Estate agents would call it ‘spacious’.

It was clearly designed to hold about 30 people, and it needed all of them to get up the stiff and old canvas and the incredibly thick and heavy wooden poles.

It took ages and we didn’t know

what we were doing, us children trying to drag wet canvas around like child sailors up on the mizzen mast of a warship. My father would lose his temper. My mother would try and mollify things while working out how to make a dinner on our one-burner stove. It would start to rain. One of us would start to cry.

That’s camping that is. Good thing it hasn’t scarred me at all. And now they want me to write something light and glowing about a damn tent. The picture shows a happy young couple smugly relaxing in their two-person tent. Nobody is crying, they don’t look hungry. It’s not even raining.

A Flip Pop Tent. That makes it sound fun doesn’t it? Like it’s a jolly blend of flip-flops and a pop-up restaurant or something. It’s a tent.

It’s an instrument of the devil. Don’t be fooled.

I’m just reading the blurb. Ha, oh

yes. It folds ‘as flat as a pancake’. I bet. Ours did that, in the middle of the night, a great crushing weight of soaking canvas on you as you cower in your soaking sleeping bag listening to scary sounds that turn out to be cows wondering what time the circus starts. (When a dreary dawn finally came and we dragged ourselves from the wreckage, one of the young cows got too inquisitive and came and stood on my little sister’s foot. It was pretty much the highlight of the holiday.)

Oh come on. It says here you put up the tent in seconds.You just throw it on the floor and it unfolds.

Then all you have to do is peg in the stakes and, voila, there you are smug and snug. That sounds impossible.

Although I do like the sound of reflective guy lines – I still remember the way it hurt banging into one with my thigh in the dark while trying to

Cooking with Alcohol An old saying goes, ‘I love cooking with alcohol, sometimes I put it in the food’. Well, this looks like something we can relate to: ‘an integrated alcohol fuelled cooking system’.

Only in this case the alcohol is Meths and, frankly, my limit is Vinho Verde, so no thank you. We’ll keep this stuff for cooking with.

I’m sorry, this is meant to be a piece about a clever new portable cooking system you can use even if it’s windy, and we’ve got a bit locked on the whole alcohol thing.

Not a problem, really. They’re very pleased with my progress.

So, this is a pot and burner that you can set up and cook with even if you’re stuck out in the wind.You won’t be losing flimsy windscreens, it’ll all stay nice and firm.

Basically it all comes in the one-litre anodised pot, which can pack inside it the windscreen/pot stand, burner, fuel and off you go.

The screen folds together to make a complete surround for the pot.

The pot goes in on top of the

burner, which then anchors the screen to the ground. Nothing’s going to blow away, nothing is going to be blown out as you have a 360-degree surround for the pot.

That means all the heat goes into the pot, which looks really sturdy and a proper pot to cook with.

The combined weight is about 330g, so there are lighter options but this one looks anything but flimsy and should be a rather neat solution to a common problem.

It costs just £28 for the whole kit, which gives you burner and lid, pot and lid, fuel bottle, and the combined windscreen/pot stand all in its own bag.

It comes from Speedster Backpacking Products, and they’ve obviously brought this product on themselves, so they know it works.

They comment how the Meths as fuel means it doesn’t pulse or jet like some pop can stoves do sometimes. It just burns steadily.

And it’s waterproof, has good ventilation, side pockets, everything fixed to the fibreglass poles and even keeps insects as well as the rain out.

something like this? It looks great.

And no sign of a sad clown face.

Rack It Up If you have a 110 Defender you may well use it for doing serious ‘stuff’, other than the weekly Tesco run.

Moving away from all the challenges that the trip entailed, there were some occasions to take in their surroundings and be all touristy. One such occasion was when witnessing the famous and beautiful Northern Lights.

‘We did catch a glimpse of them [the Northern Lights] late one night whilst driving, but unfortunately, by the time we had found somewhere safe to park up, it had started to cloud over. However, it was still a truly breathtaking sight, rather too literally thanks to the plummeting temperatures!’ he reflected.

Tom even let us on to a top tip for any of you out there who are thinking of making a voyage to the Norwegian capital. ‘Sledging near the Oslo winter park was amazing! There’s a huge twisting forest course stretching

around three miles long, and renting a sledge for the day only costs around £12. This definitely isn’t somewhere you want to miss’ he enthused. You just know it will be better than any dry ski slope on offer in the UK. When we last caught up with Tom, he’d already put in much of the groundwork to prepare Omega Automotive Ltd.his Discovery for the conditions he would be facing, rations of the Kuman family. there were still some slight alteransion,but Rubber, Cooling tions to be made before the off. ‘I fitted nies around the world. a heated windscreen, for those who have one know how amazing they are, and I also converted to Evans Coolants. They sorted me out with Power Cool 180° and Prep Fluid, and the coolant system handled the conditions with ease,’ claims Tom. With the multitude of changes Tom himself had made to the vehicle, I asked if he had a favourite or one that was most effective for Arctic exploring, to which he replied: ‘Heated seats, period. They are the best thing ever invented. Mainly because it meant Rosie was kept quiet about the temperature, that’s why I give it 10/10!’

‘But in all seriousness, one of my favourites was the Britpart 2” lift kit supplied by Tim Fry Landrovers. When I first drove the Disco, it seemed very unstable, and after a bit of investigation it turned out the shock absorbers were all completely shot!’ All sorted after the help of Tim Fry, however.

So what’s next after you’ve conquered the North Cape? Well, Tom and Rosie have quite a lot of things on their plates first before they even consider their next adventure. ‘All our expedition dreams will be put on hold for a little bit whilst we buy our first home and get married!’ says Tom. ‘I’d just like to thank the almost 700 followers on Facebook for their kind words and enthusiasm that kept us going, and for those who donated their hard-earned money to such a great cause.’

T

ravelling ever deeper into the continent of South America, a landing party consisting of two humans – one male, one female – and a transportation goddess known to the native planet as Ruby The Landy, delves into the territory christened Bolivia. This terrific trio of terrain conquerors has seen much beauty and experienced much culture already on their quest through this unfamiliar world.

Now as they embark on the next chapter, they must face challenges like never before.

The state of Bolivia was to be explored for a month, in which time, Gav (the male) and Jen (the female) would learn of Bolivia’s treasures.

Intel suggested that the country was more deprived than others they had ventured through before, while high quality fuel was scarcer and roadblocks a more probable feature in the weeks ahead.

Never deterred, our landing party hit the ground running with their first point of contact being Bolivia’s heart, the capital, La Paz. ‘We spent a few days in La Paz, which stands at an altitude of 3650 metres, and we really enjoyed ourselves. It

gave us the opportunity to sort our vehicle insurance for the rest of the South American leg of our trip, but we also took in an excellent city tour and mountain biked down Death Road – our favourite highlight,’ says Jen. ‘Death Road was once named the world`s most dangerous road. We went with an excellent company called Extreme Downhill, and the bikes were in very good condition with great brakes!’

Jen smiles after verifying that for herself on more than one occasion.

Once shackled up with all the right protection, the guides set Jen and Gav off first before realising they preferred to mimic the Land Rover mantra of slow and steady. However, it seems like giving Jen a few potential hazards to work with acts as a catalyst and sends her completely off her rocker!

On Death Road itself, where it gets extremely narrow and where – you guessed it – death is but a wonky turn away, Jen seemingly transformed into Sir Chris Hoy and started to fly past every other Fernando, Carlos and Sergio on her descent down the ‘highway’.

Action replays suggest one Bolivian motorist was a little concerned when he rounded one of the corners and found Jen had forgotten which side of the road to be on! Fortunately, it was just a near miss, as was the moment when two vultures swept across their

path, almost sending them down the hillside the wrong way!

Luckily, it wasn’t all about dancing with death. During the 44km ride, there was beautiful scenery to witness – but certainly relief at the end.

Leaving La Paz had its problems too.

Ruby and her passengers encountered one of the many roadblocks operating on leaving the city, but after a polite discussion with local police, they showed our gang a small off-road route that paid dividends. When we say small, it was actually 30 miles or so!

Their next encounter was located in the northern region of Salar de Uyuni, home to the world’s largest salt flat that stretches over nearly 11,000 square kilometres and consists of a vast landscape, filled with white salt up to 10cm thick, crystal blue skies and the occasional outcrop or island, such as Incahuasi which is riddled with hundreds of giant cacti.

‘We drove to a small place called Coqueza, on the north and quieter side of the Salar,’ says Jen. ‘It was a stunning environment with a colourful volcano behind it and the salt flats stretching out for miles in front of it.

‘There was also a small lagoon before the salt flats where flamingos grazed.

This was our wild camp spot for the night – and again, we loved being able to camp in such a beautiful place.’

Driving on the flats themselves was a surreal experience for Gav and Jen, flying along with nothing on the horizon for mile after mile. They stopped at the Palacio de Sal (salt hotel) – an ideal resting place for the ‘seasoned’ traveller – before paying a visit to the Dakar monument.

‘We spent some time in the small town of Uyuni, where we met other

overlanders who would journey with us on the off-road Lagunas route into Northern Chile,’ explains Gav. ‘But first a few more nights of wild camping on the Salar were needed, including an overnight stop at the train cemetery!

‘The Lagunas route itself is a 260mile trail and we would spend four nights completing this challenging

39 leg before reaching Laguna Colorado, a shallow salt lake where the water appears red due to the sediment and pigmentation of the algae. The mass population of flamingos also added to the vibrancy on display!’

With off-road driving, stunning views and the company of fellow overlanders, this is a section of their voyage that Jen, Gav and Ruby will surely hold in high regard. Other Lagunas including Blanca and Verde were explored before our trio headed to Aduana at an altitude of 5,000 metres ready for the crossing into Chile.

‘We’d spent more time at altitude in Bolivia and as a result it had been on the cooler side,’ says Jen. ‘The days were bright and sunny and the nights very cold, while the terrain was beautiful and the salt flats and Lagunas route were like nothing we had seen before.’

The delegation of duties was working well at this point, too, with Jen and Gav both sharing drive time, though Gav did take the lion’s share seeing as Jen was in charge of international relations (we feel for you, Gav!).

If Jen wasn’t working her charm on the local police, however, at camp she would handle the pot washing following Gav’s cooking masterclass – apparently, he’s quite good!

Our band of travellers had a ball in Bolivia, managing to get through some squeaky-bum moments and traversing to the next stage of their adventure.

When you’re at the wheel of a Land Rover there is certainly never a dull moment! Let’s see what Chile brings.

Scilly Workshop Tales: Part One

Land Rover fire tenders are rare enough as it is, but to come across one on the Isles of Scilly is even more unheard of. Which is why when Martin Lear acquired it, he knew it needed lifting back onto its feet and was a Landy worth saving Words and Pictures: Martin Lear

fter living for many years in Derbyshire, I moved to Cornwall in 1988. I retired in 2005 and later decided to buy a smart looking, but ultimately rotten, 110.

In late 2006 the 110 was presented by me for MOT, with excellent straight panels, a reasonable paint finish, a severely underpowered 2.25-litre engine and what turned out to be a cunningly disguised, biscuit chassis laced with chicken wire.

At this point, faced with throwing away £1500 (that being the cost of the 110), I stepped into the world of Land Rover rebuilding and restoration. All it took was for someone to say, ‘Oh

that’s a “crossover”, they’re pretty rare’.

By the end of 2007, thanks to James at Penwith 4x4, it was well on its way to being serviceable, with a galvanised chassis, a new bulkhead and an MOT. While all this was going on, plans were being hatched to fit the 110 with a 200Tdi power unit I had obtained.

Serious modifications were involved, which James undertook.

This was achieved after I got hold of a suitable power steering unit in 2010.

Then, later in 2012, an exchange gearbox was fitted, completing the project.

I still have the 110 and use it daily.

But this isn’t about the 110 (which you’ll hear more of another time). No, this is about something that preoccupied me while the 110 was on its own road to recovery.

I had at the time an identical 109 and I asked James if it might be possible to make one good vehicle out of the two.

Eventually, both vehicles found their way into the backyard of Penwith 4x4, where they were stripped down, decisions were made about the best way forward and the restoration work began.

In December 2008, when on my way to collect a friend from Newquay airport in a friend’s Renault Clio, an MG travelling from the airport hit us head on at Strawberry Woods in a classic high-speed crossover accident. Without dwelling on details, I wasn’t going to be taking anything apart other than solicitors’ letters for a year or two.

By 2009 things were moving forward with both 109s completely stripped and decisions made as to the suitability of various parts – mainly the chassis and bulkheads for repair/restoration.

Sadly, only the original fire engine chassis was considered repairable and a major grinding, cutting, welding and repainting programme began. By 2010

Paul, who worked for James, was able to show me the stripped and welded chassis. It was then that I came into my own, with a brush and cans of red lead and bitumen. Three or four coats later, the chassis was ready for rebuilding to start.

The engine, transfer box and gearbox, with overdrive, came from the donor vehicle, as did the freewheeling hubs. The next task was to change the

injectors, fit a new clutch and prepare the unit for the refit. By now we were well into 2010 and there was no sign of a suitable or repairable bulkhead.

On the plus side, the 110 was finished and back on the road. In fact, it towed a caravan to southern Spain and Portugal in the spring of 2011.

At this point in time I had a stroke of good fortune. A late Eighties Land Rover, which had been recently fitted

with a new bulkhead, was stolen and used, without success, to batter down steel gates in an attempted ram raid in Penzance. When the dust cleared, I bought the power steering unit (for my 110), and the bulkhead went to James for reconstruction and modification into a Series III unit. All I had to do, once again, was take a (very battered) Land Rover apart.

There followed a long period of sorting and repairing, everything from transmission tunnel sections, to sections of the butt, which required fabrication work around the door pillars.

Repairing everything on a Series III 109, which has lived by the sea for 30 years, means corrosion. A project that initially had been set out on with the ‘let’s make one good one out of two’ philosophy was by now a restoration project and I found myself offering to dismantle and remove scrap Land Rovers in order to marginally improve the final outcome.

A decision was made around this time to attempt a full refurbishment, which had financial implications with the purchase of many new parts: doors, springs, wiring loom etc. In addition it called on the expertise of Penwith 4x4

Over the days and months, parts were repaired, smoothed and primed ready for reassembling

more than ever and the services of a paint sprayer, Olly Moon.

I then asked Cyril (or Squirrel to his friends), who was the original signwriter of the fire brigade logo 32 years earlier, if he would repeat the job. Having organised this, the next year or so was spent welding, grinding and preparing body panels, which were then sprayed and stored.

During this time, James oversaw the bulkhead changes while a local fabricator called Keith completed the repair and reinforcement of the butt.

There was still an awful lot of work to be done on the fire tender, but as with anything regarding Land Rovers, things can’t be rushed.

Project Td5: Following months of tweaks and choice alterations, we look back on the changes we’ve brought to our resident Td5 90 – and declare what works, and what doesn’t

eeing as this is the July issue of The Landy and it’s getting towards that time of the year when the academics among us have to start revising for exams, and teachers shake with anticipation as they can cross another day off the calendar until the summer break, we figured we’d reflect back on what we’ve learnt in the last ten months about our very own protégé.

I’m referring to our resident Td5 90, or more accurately, our advertising manager’s Td5 90. Colin and I put our heads together last summer to discuss what we thought would be the best route to take with the Defender, both for him and you guys out there.

In a world where production has now ceased on the traditional Land Rover, vehicles like the Defender – particularly older examples – will become collect-

Sure, you can buy a Defender and head out on the lanes or dress it up to the nines in lift kits and winch bumpers in order to demolish your local playday site. But even with prices now stabilising, you still pay a premium for the bonnet lettering.

And if you’re going to smash a vehicle about, why not grab yourself a cheap Disco that does the same job?

More and more people are joining the preservation game, with Defenders being put on galvanised chassis’ and a focus switching from short-term thrashing to long-term enjoyment.

Colin, the lucky devil, found himself this fabulous 90 last year with the colour being a particular, and personal, highlight. In the sun, the paint really does sparkle.

Keeping it fairly original was of the AT3s are good.

utmost priority. The only changes that would be made here would be in the name of practicality, modernisation and aesthetic enhancement. What I will now do is briefly evaluate each product and modification we’ve fitted to give you a definitive verdict on whether you should invest your own hard-earned cash into the item or not.

Firstly, the Cooper Discoverer AT3 tyres. The previous set of rubber – also the original in this case – was on its last legs and some return of grip was required. These AT3 tyres are 265/75/16 in size, compared to the outgoing 235/85/16s preceding them. The slightly wider tyre works wonders on the road, both for grip and confidence, and while off-road, they are able to succeed across (no surprise) all terrain.

Yes, a mud tyre or Special Track will be more effective on a playday, but if

01527 892377 you’re using your Land Rover on the road too then an all-terrain tyre does what it says on the sidewall, and this is one of the best out there. Couple it with 30mm wheel spacers, like we have from Masai 4x4, and you get a Defender that possesses an improved stance on the road – and when stationary.

Something we’re not so convinced about, however, is the Cataclean fuel additive we trialled. Running at 30.8mpg as standard, we were hoping to see some benefit in using one of the numerous additives on the market, but having used Cataclean over the threemonth period specified, we were only up to 31.2mpg. Our tip: just buy better fuel for your Land Rover. Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate consists of additives in the first place, so think of it as giving your Land Rover Evian as oppose to normal tap water.

The only other thing we’ve done to help what lies under the bonnet (or ignore what’s under the bonnet in this instance) is install Dynamat’s special soundproof matting. It works modestly to help buffer some of the excessive noise coming through to the cabin, but simply putting this product under the

The stock steps were just chrome pieces of metal – not ideal if you’re trying to quickly clamber into your truck to hide from the rain, and you end up flat on your back. These Masai Fire and Ice Steps are stylish, durable and safer

airflow from the vents, but also diverts currents towards the side windows as well. Brilliantly effective.

As are the various LED lights we’ve decorated the Landy with. Britpart’s LED kit for side lights, side repeaters, indicators and so on all do a brilliant job of modernising the exterior of our resident Td5. It’s surprising how such small components can alter a car’s look – and substitute dated electrics for upto-date tech. And yet the LEDs don’t look out of place, true of the smaller lights and the headlights, provided by Ring Automotive.

The latter includes daytime running lights in the shape of a halo, and they’re ruddy bright! No one wants candles in jam jars, do they? From a safety point of view, if you’re going to make one change to your Land Rover for night-time driving, put some LEDs on your wagon.

‘In terms of practicality, I’d say the Masai steps,’ states Colin when I ask him what modification has made his life easier. ‘Simply getting in and out of the vehicle is now much better.

And less dangerous as well.’ There were steps there before, but chrome in finish and slippery when wet. These are stronger, give better grip and are aesthetically easier on the eye, complementing the other black highlights around the Land Rover.

Speaking of which, you’ll have spotted the change of chequer plate from silver to black in recent months. Land Rover may charge thousands for Black Design Packs, but on your Defender just add a bit of tastefully placed black chequer plating and you’ve got your very own HSE Black Defender.

The aftermarket air intake cover from Masai 4x4 is pretty swish too. Of course, this is all just personal taste when it comes to this sort of thing.

However, one process that should be universally welcomed is protecting your Defender, its chassis and all other components underneath.

hen looking at Land Rovers over the last 60 to 70 years, has there been a better vehicle at combining capability with everyday versatility, all with value for money, than the brilliant Td5 Discovery?

I would argue not.

Virtually as good off-road as a Defender, but better on-road and with a dash of extra practicality thrown in, these were a true family all-rounder.

But are they still the ticket today?

Advise from Land Rover expert, Ashley Counsell, should shed light on this conundrum.

We’re looking, as mentioned, at the Td5 model, which generally carries a robust engine. But there are a couple of hiccups to be aware of.

‘Occasionally, head gaskets fail due to the plastic head to block-locating dowels breaking. Fitting steel dowels at repair cures this,’ informs Ashley.

‘Another very occasional failure is the cylinder head cracking internally, causing diesel to run down into the sump. It’s a rare one, but if the oil level appears well over the mark, then it could have a sump full of diesel. Not a cheap one to repair.

‘Injector O-ring seals can fail, while the bolt-on fuel connector unit at the back of the head is prone to weeping. The in-head injector wiring harness can get oil ingress into the cable strands, causing a misfire or bad starting.’ Ashley says to check for oil around the harness connector plug at the front right of the head.

The harness is easy enough to change, but see if oil has wicked its way back to the red plug at the engine ECU (just behind the battery).

On the transmission front, both manual and auto options work well enough. However, clutch replacement should include the dual mass flywheel

which adds to the cost. ‘It’s also wise to replace the crank spigot bush when doing a clutch,’ stresses Ashley.

As we spring over to discuss suspension, you should know that the coil-sprung setup is pretty durable, you should just have to deal with usual wear and tear. But the rear self-levelling air suspension compressors can fail, as can the height sensors.

Converting to coils can offer a solution, but please do check with your insurance provider.

‘The real bugbear with Discovery 2 suspension is the ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) system,’ declares Ashley. ‘If fitted, pipes can corrode and the spring leaks. It’s expensive and a pain to replace. Much better to convert the car back to standard anti-roll bars; you’ll barely notice the difference.’

You shouldn’t notice any major electrical issues either, with the D2 throwing up no major faults, the same

The main problem with a Disco 2: chassis. The body is generally fine, but the chassis can be terrible – so the opposite of what you get with a Disco 1.

Ashley says, ‘Corrosion generally starts at the rear, each side of the fuel tank, and moves forward. Various

repair sections are now available and will save some vehicles adequately. Or you can spend £3000 on a galvanised chassis if you really like your vehicle.’

If you can find a Td5 with low mileage and a sound chassis, it could be a keeper. But if you find yourself with a tatty number, you’ll wish you’d never set eyes on the thing. Choose carefully.

Series I (1948-1958)

I

f you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go.

The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.

Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game.

The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

I

n 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders.

Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collector’s

item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy.

The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985)

F

ollowing on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks to freshen up the model.

Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup.

The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

P

ossibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights.

These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion on occasion.

To mimic the civvy Series ma-

chines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978)

O

nly serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted.

These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover.

These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990)

T

he icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are.

This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender 200Tdi (1990-1994)

I

n 1990, the Defender name emerged and with it a cementing of a legacy that already stretched back over 40 years. This was... is the best 4x4 by far.

It carried the Tdi badge for the first time and meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel.

If you’re in the market for a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but it might not necessarily

be from a Defender. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold.

The 200Tdi is probably the best for off-roaders, so many of these vehicles will have been worked hard.

Some owners have now started restoring these vehicles, meaning a premium price – but can you really put a price on perfection...?

Defender 300Tdi (1994-1998)

A

fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi. Essentially, this was a revised version of the predecessor – perhaps a little more refined – but still with the same durability.

These engines, providing they are properly maintained, can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper.

Some Tdi Defenders have received

galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. A futureproof Landy.

By the time the 300Tdi came out, Land Rover was now giving the Defender power steering as standard and disc brakes all-round. It’s the little things after all.

Arguably the company’s greatest engine, balancing performance and practicality. The Defender in its prime.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

F

ollowing on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly.

Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples

of what many have been subject to.

Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces.

The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences.

With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-present)

T

he last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years.

Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal offroad capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders.

The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money.

You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

£2500-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90).

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

W

e haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles.

With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can

be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

M

ost people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think.

Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there.

Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996)

T

he Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday in the 21st Century.

If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples.

That said, if you own one and it’s

in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors.

Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return.

While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002)

M

any people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can really continue.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational.

Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner.

Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries.

Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012)

C

ompared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring.

The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.

Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out

for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap.

As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present)

I

f you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further.

The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue.

This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t.

Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013)

M

uch of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations.

Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them.

If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige.

They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present)

T

he second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the daddy Range Rover.

That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.

Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling.

But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present)

W

hen the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled Jaguar Land Rover’s intent on hitting the mass market. And given that the Evoque is their fastest-selling vehicle to-date, they’ve clearly done the job.

That doesn’t mean it’s a hit with purists. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender.

LAND ROVER T H E E V E RY D AY C L A S S I C

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals.

Go for a five-door with the new Ingenium engine, and make it the 4WD version. The 2WD model may be eco-friendly but what is a Range Rover without four-wheel drive?

£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Discovery 1 (1989-1998)

T

he earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover.

It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag.

Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today.

Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

F

ollowing on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5.

The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental.

Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale...

Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-present)

T

he Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle.

Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once.

Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job!

The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples.

A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present)

L

aunched just a couple of months ago, this latest Discovery is still yet to hit the UK roads on mass.

Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, it would seem their proficiency in the use of lightweight technologies is only getting better and better.

We’ve yet to drive the latest Discov-

ery, but expectations are high – especially as this will be Land Rover’s most capable SUV in production.

New engines look promising on paper, and Land Rover has listened to customers regarding the infotainment system. It will remain to be seen whether the changes have quenched the thirst of the critics, though.

We reckon the base Sd4 model could turn out to provide all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present)

rought in to replace the Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family.

It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though.

For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine.

Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles they make.

It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque.

Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

ince the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler JK in 2006, enthusiasts in Britain have wished the factory would combine the 2.8 CRD diesel engine with the Rubicon off-road spec package. It now does – but while there’s no apparent engineering barrier to doing so in right-hand drive, the company has confirmed that a Rubicon diesel won’t be available in the UK. The latest example of a diesel Rubicon to be shown in public appeared on the Jeep stand at Geneva in March, in the shape of a new special-edition version of the vehicle. Named the Recon, this gains a stronger front axle and

heavy-duty cast diff covers, adding yet more resilience to what is already a uniquely capable off-road vehicle. Further enhancements include a vented Power Dome bonnet, beneath which buyers on what we can still just about call mainland Europe will have a choice between the 2.8 CRD and 284bhp, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines.

Here in Britain, only the latter will be available, mated to a five-speed auto gearbox as standard.

Sales of the Rubicon Recon are now being rolled out across Jeep’s European markets. Prices are yet to be announced, however Jeep says it will be available in a wide range of paint colours.

Mini’s Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid will cost from £31,585 (before the government’s plug-in car grant) when it hits the road on 24 June. The 224bhp petrol-electric SUV claims 134.5mpg, 49g/km and a zero-emissions range of up to 25 miles.

The vehicle’s purpose was to demonstrate Mopar’s ONE off-road accessory pack. Featuring a 2” suspension lift, steering damper and 265/75R17 Hankook all-terrains on cast alloy rims, this kit is now available through Jeep’s dealer network for 2-door and 4-door Rubicon models – even though in the UK, the vehicle itself is not.

vehi Simply getting hold of vehicles has long been a problem own for would-be Wrangler owners in the UK – and with the demise of the Land Rover Defender, there are more of them than ever. Jeep has admitted that supply here needs to improve – and the company’s boss Michael Manly recently confirmed next-gen that ahead of the next-generation JL model starting production this autumn, the factory is gearing up for a near-100% rise in output.

The JL will come to the UK in 2018, with a double-cab pick-up version due to follow a year later. Specific model plans here remain unknown, however the US market is getting its first ever diesel – prompting optimism that when it comes here, the new Wrangler will at last be available with the right engine in Rubicon form.

Wran Prices for the new Wrangler are a long way from being finalised, however with better supply it is to be hoped that they will be more realistic than at present. The cheapest Wrangler currently costs £33,925 – almost double what it did when the current model was launched ten years ago.

Medium-sized seven-seat SUV promises modern tech and real off-road ability SSANGYONG’S OFF-ROAD HERITAGE continues to be writ large in its latest concept vehicle, the XAVL. A seven-seater based on 2015’s XAV concept, this will go into production in the near future.

Sitting between the current Korando and soon-to-be-replaced Rexton, Ssangyong says the XAVL will be ‘an authentic off-road SUV’.

It will be available in 1.5-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel forms, each with a choice of transmissions.

Inside, the vehicle promises a wide range of high-tech features.

Major functions can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, the passenger seats have a wi-fi hotspot and Link to Home technology allows you to warm up the oven, operate the central heating and so on from in the cabin.

Outside, the XAVL has a ‘tough, masculine exterior’. In the words

of Ssangyong boss Johng-sik Choi, it ‘takes its design inspiration from our iconic Korando model of the

Ssangyong has also revised its current Korando, with a new-look front end and a tough interior which can ‘handle the rough and tumble of family life.’

The vehicle now features LED running lights, 18” diamond-turned alloys and a more comfortable steering wheel.

Options include a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines and manual and auto gearboxes.

Four-wheel drive is on offer, as are several other safety features.

These updates will see the Korando through to the end of production; Ssangyong’s smallest SUV is due to be replaced two years from now.

Audi’s SQ7 is famous for the electrically powered 48-volt compressor allowing its 4.0 TDI engine to deliver 435bhp and 664lbf.ft from just 1000rpm. But the system also has a future in the company’s petrol-engined products – the first of which is the Q8 Sport Concept.

A four-seat coupe-SUV, this features a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine with the 48v changer in a mild hybrid system developing 470bhp and 516lbf.ft. As well as allowing a 4.7-seconds 0-62 time, Audi says this drivetrain gives the Q8 a range of more than 745 miles.

Audi says the TFSI-based hybrid system will be used on a wide range of its models in the future. The Q8, meanwhile, is strongly tipped to spawn a production model which will go on sale around a year from now.

Peugeot’s second-generation 3008 has been named Car of the Year 2017. The new SUV has already been ordered by almost 100,000 customers across Europe – however only a few choose the Hybrid4 model, which is the sole version with all-wheel drive.
