True, Land Rover is thinking more of purses, briefcase, hip flask etc, all of life’s essentials, which apparently we already waste 15 minutes every day losing and then searching for. The number of possessions you can keep track of is limitless. This isn’t a reason to buy more. You will be searching for your lost child or laptop with that secret data on it, by looking at a new 10.2in touchscreen. The updated InControl Touch Pro infotainment system operates much more like a smartphone and should be more intuitive to use. It should also be extremely fast as it is the first use in the automotive field of the Intel Quad-Core processor.

Naturally there is more to the next Discovery Sport than simply helping you with your shambolic lifestyle, although that is a promising start. The vehicle will be recognisable by four new body colours, and there will be a Graphite Pack as an option on SE and SE Tech versions which gives accent shades of grey to numerous exterior items, from roof to side vents. There will also be more safety systems, including the equivalent of having matron sat alongside you, giving you a jab in the ribs if you look like you’re nodding off, ignoring the speed limits or simply proving unable to keep to your lane. What fun it all sounds, eh? All this can be yours, for £31,095, and you can place your orders now. Try not to lose the paperwork.

Smouldering new Evoque Special Edition Words: Graham Scott

W

hat’s black and red all over? In this case it’s the new special edition Evoque. You wonder why they need one really – JLR has sold over 520,000 Evoques since they came on sale in 2011 already. But this latest Land Rover Evoque is called the Ember, and smoulders away with a Firenze Red roof which is contrasted by a Santorini Black body. The Evoque continues into the black with some Black Pack elements including 20in alloys, exhaust finishes and grille, all finished in black. Even the lights have been darkened, at least to look at. This Evoque is based on the HSE Dynamic trim, and inside you gain black seats with red stitching, black and red premium carpet mats and gloss black finishes around the cabin. Sounds a bit porn-tastic, but it looks great.

So if you fancy going to the dark side, and don’t fancy having an Evoque like all the other half a million or so, you have a small (darkened)

window of opportunity. The Range Rover Evoque Ember will only be on sale for three months this summer, with prices starting at £47,200.

The List You Don’t Want to Top Words: Graham Scott

I

t’s always good to see Solihull products at the top of lists. And in the latest one Range Rover takes the No 1 spot. Yay! And it takes the No 3 and No 9 slots too. Go Range Rover! What is even cooler is that the Range Rover Sport, the clear winner, knocks the BMW X5 into second place. And BMW’s top-selling SUV has held that place for the last six years straight. Man, the Germans must be mad at that. And now they’re sandwiched between the Sport and the Range Rover Vogue. Okay so it’s disappointing to see no Discovery and no Defender even making the top 10, but to be fair, some of the opposition is pretty fierce. The impressive and expensive Audi Q7, for example, only just makes the top 10, one place behind our very own Range Rover Autobiography. Even a car as monumentally impressive as a Mercedes-AMG C63, a luxury saloon with over 500bhp, can only get to sixth place. So, overall, the Range Rover team must be quietly thrilled with this result. Oh, wait, what’s this? Ah, this is a list of the top 10 most stolen vehicles

It’s been put together by Tracker, who have indeed tracked a lot of the stolen vehicles down. And Range Rovers get stolen a lot. A real lot. So that’s not so good really. Ironically, though, in the enthusiast’s world, all we hear about is the latest 90 to have been unwillingly taken from its rightful owner. It’s interesting to imagine where all these stolen vehicles go. Although it’s a fair bet that a lot end up overseas somehow or other. Everything on this list is a prestige car, so it’s no surprise that everyone wants to have a Range Rover, even the car thieves and their clients. So here’s how to make yourself really unhappy or nervous every night.

Buy a Range Rover Sport. And live in Greater London. Because those two things make you the most likely target of professional car thieves. People in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands won’t sleep too much better either as those areas come in second and third respectively in the parts of the country with the highest incidence of car theft. So your Series III in a garage off a small lane in Hampshire is statistically a lot safer than that wealthy person’s Range Rover on a house driveway in Islington. You’ll sleep better than he will. Just another reason to own a Defender.

Can I have a word...

I know much will have been said about the matter already, but it is remarkable to look at what Land Rover has become today. Sure, the new breed of Land Rovers can be waved away with a snigger and a snort of derision at their prices and the laughable thought that they are as engaging to drive as years gone by. But we have to be honest and realise that the owners of Jaguar Land Rover spotted something we didn’t. They realised that the whole Land Rover brand, not just Range Rovers, can be a ‘premium’ vehicle. Thankfully, we don’t all now have to sell a leg in order to be welcomed into such company as the Holland & Holland L405 Rangey you see above. Simon Bennett is in this issue with his P38 H&H machine, which shows that you can still have a premium experience in an old-school Landy. And it won’t cost you £180,000… Elsewhere between these sheets, Matt Unsworth talks to us about his boyhood dream of owning a yellow 90, and how he’s managed to make his own bedroom poster hero. ell it turned out to be quite the show – and if you were one of the few people that didn’t make it to the Great British Land Rover Show on 24 April, then you missed out on a real slice of Green Oval heaven. Packed in like sardines, enthusiasts from all over the UK – and some coming from even further than that – all breathed in the Land Rover goodness on offer at this April’s instalment of the biggest indoor Land Rover show in the country. The show was based at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, where visitors queued to get in on the action awaiting for them within the venue. Just a few of the biggest names in the industry who were there included Goodwinch, MUD UK and Bearmach. With an array of classic and modified vehicles greeting visitors on approach to the entrance, and a whole raft of other vehicles to dribble on once inside, it was one day visitors will surely remember for some time. The good news, of course, is that the Great British Land Rover Show comes around twice a year. It’s like you having a birthday and Christmas every year, only nobody at the show gives you a stupid sweater. So, get your calendar ready and mark a spot on Sunday 27 November because that’s

going to be your end-of-year Land Rover fest. Stay tuned for more details on tickets and features over the coming months. In the meantime, though, let us fill you in on what happened in April. For starters, those readers of The Landy who applied to have their vehicles on show at the front of the venue helped put together an incredible spectacle of varying Land Rovers. Classics, off-road monsters, it was all there. But ultimately it was the public who had the final word on which was best and it turned out to be a mixture of Defenders (unsurprisingly) and a lovely short wheelbase Series I, built in 1957. Inside, the show was in full swing, and John Vowell went home swinging after being the lucky winner selected from all advanced ticket purchasers to win one of the hi-tech tracking devices from Defender Defender (which you can read about in this month’s Products section). Land Rover themselves very kindly brought down a Disco 4 Landmark and the hell-raising Range Rover Sport SVR for us to salivate over, while there were many other Defender, Series and Range Rover vehicles to put on our wish list. It just goes to illustrate how popular these wonderful machines are, and how much can be done to individualise them. And you can bet there will be even more on display at the November season finale. JLR agrees, and put on an active demonstration for EU Transport Ministers on the narrow streets of Amsterdam – but avoided the canals. ollowing on the success of the Invictus Games, an event for which JLR has been Presenting Partner ever since it started, the company has announced it is doing more, far more, to help ex-service men and women. The aim of the new programme is to employ 1000 ex-service personnel by 2020, which would be a five-fold increase in recruitment since 2013 alone. Land Rover has always had a strong bond with the military and JLR is now looking to significantly strengthen that by being the go-to employer for those leaving the armed forces either through length of service or through injury. One of the first steps to make this a global target has been the programme in the USA to recruit 180 veterans

rince Harry showed he is the master of his fate by taking part in the Invictus Games himself. The prince drove both the Jaguar XE and Discovery Sport round the tough Land Rover Driving Challenge, the first competitive medal event of the Invictus Games. Surrounded by the 11 teams of injured ex-service personnel who took part in the event, Prince Harry had a go round the course before presenting the first award of the Games to France for their winning team of Robert Philippe and M Reuient Haller, who took gold.

Parties Pull Together for Gatescarth Words and Pictures: Steve Pighills

G

atescarth Pass, between Mardale and Longsleddale in the Lake District, is perhaps the most outstanding unsurfaced road in England. It’s a rocky route through spectacular scenery and, thanks to good relationships and close interaction between the TRF, GLASS and the Lake District National Park Authority, it’s available for trail riders and 4x4 drivers to use on a Traffic Regulation Ordered permit basis – one day a month, 18 motorcycles and 12 4x4s. All parties attend an annual Gatescarth Review Meeting in February, and this year the most important topic was the closure of the pass due to a landslide on the south side resulting from the deluge which afflicted Cumbria in December ‘15. This landslip was maybe 50m long, 10m wide and 1m deep. Throughout Cumbria, the damage was terrible, houses flooded, bridges destroyed, roads washed away, and the Park estimated that its liability alone was £10 million. By the spring, only £2 million of potential funding had been identified, and the TRF and GLASS realised that remote mountain roads, mainly used for leisure purposes by motor vehicles, cyclists and walkers, would necessarily be low on the list of priorities. We asked the Park if we could fund the repair of Gatescarth and were told that to get a contractor and digger to deal with the landslip, and to do needed preventative maintenance there, and on the nearby Longsleddale Pass, would require £2,500. It seemed fair to us that the TRF and GLASS should fund this jointly; gratifyingly the TRF came up with its share very quickly thanks to a generous contribution from the national body, and GLASS were equally rapid. The Park were very pleased indeed with our action. By April the Park had engaged a contractor, Steve Foster, who is highly specialised in this type of high-level unsurfaced road repair, and work was planned to start later that month. Weather was generally appalling late in April, and thankfully there were

no signs of work being carried out in such risky conditions. By early May, conditions had improved and the landslip was well on its way away. The contractor had already done remedial work on the north side, and would soon be proceeding down into Longsleddale. Altogether, 10 days work was carried out, which will benefit all users including the local farmers. Grass seed has been put down and within a few

months the area should be back to its usual scenic self. The permit system has been reinstated, with the first date being 21 May, which leads onto the rotation of Fri/Sat/Sun of the first weekend each month onwards. Cumbria TRF normally marshal these days to provide assistance and information to any users and we get a good reception from walkers and mountain bikers. Permits can be

applied for online from the LDNPA website on a first come, first served, basis. The TRF and GLASS suggested that the Park should ask for a £2.50 per wheel voluntary contribution from each user, which will be used for maintenance specifically for motor vehicle usable routes. A fair request given that the British winter could

serve up a similar problem later down the line. A rainy day fund doesn’t seem so bad. In addition there will be some volunteer maintenance days organised for the upcoming months, so keep an eye out for details in due course on the Cumbria TRF and GLASS Facebook pages.

Defending done the right way

Defender Defender is a new tracking device brought to you from the people behind Gloucester Land Rover. Having been the subject of a Defender theft themselves, the company was given some advice from former-SAS personnel and the idea of a beacon system was put forward. Used in the army for tracking enemies or precious cargo, the Defender Defender tracking device uses similar technology to safeguard the safety of your beloved Defender. The Defender Defender device will send a text message to your smartphone should the vehicle be disturbed. It will text you if it travels beyond 5mph and it will text you if it ventures outside of its geo-circle. Clever stuff. The device costs £195, which when you think of it possibly saving your insurance premium from rocketing, doesn’t sound like a bad investment. In fact we reckon it could be a very smart one indeed. Style up your Wings Now this is tricky from an installation point of view. You have to get a screwdriver (the tool not the orange and vodka cocktail, although that’ll do just as well). Then you have to unscrew seven screws holding on each of your wingtop vents. Then you have to take out the old, buckled and beaten original plastic items, and replace with these seriously smart CNC milled aluminium replacements. They’re powdercoated black to match the originals but are much more durable and a lot smarter. Now comes the tricky part. You have to now screw back in the seven screws. Where, I hear you ask. Back into the original holes. It’s tricky, but we’re working on a step-by-step video to help confused Defender owners. These very smart wingtop vents are made by Series Defender Outfitters and they cost $190 a pair and come as a set. Naturally they’ll fit left- or right-hand drive vehicles. The company sounds like it makes serious sunscreen protection, but instead Factor 55 has just released a really interesting hook they’re calling the UltraHook. Just taking a look at the hook shows how versatile it is. It’s CNC machined from military-grade aluminium, so there’s plenty of strength there to start with. The advantage it has is that it offers a closed system for winch cables or ropes. There is a safety latch over the mouth of the hook, and when you slide your cable in there the latch folds down flat into the hook so you don’t snag up on it. When the cable is safely in, then there’s a locking pin which is housed within the hook which you can use to lock the safety latch across the mouth of the hook. That cable is not coming out that way. There is also a hole machined into the body of the hook which can take a shackle pin directly. Add in rubber pads so that your fairlead doesn’t get scraped around, and you have a pretty useful and safe piece of kit. It looks pretty trick too! Finally, note the fingergrips. Factor 55 put these on one side only, so you are pushed into having the mouth of the hook pointing upwards. That means if something hideous happens the body of the hook will fly into the ground, not up into the air or anything else nearby. Most Range Rovers are synonymous with luxury and elegance, even in standard form. But Holland and Holland Range Rovers have always had a little more up their sleeve. Here we take a look back at one of the earliest incarnations of these very exclusive Land Rovers

R

ange Rovers: they are class acts. And that goes for virtually every walk of life they find themselves to be in. Whether it is pulling up to the golf club or pulling up to the summit of a mountain, there are few things a Range Rover can’t do. They remind me of a swan – the wheels, electronics and unrivalled engineering paddling furiously underneath the perceived elegance, to get the vehicle to wherever it needs to be in nothing but a luxurious and non-stressful cocoon. Even your boggo Rangey is frightfully ‘clarssay’. But some people can

never have too much luxury. That’s why Range Rovers have had an affiliation with companies like Holland & Holland for several years. Back in 2000, a production run of 400 limited-edition Range Rovers got underway in a joint-venture between Land Rover and the renowned gunmakers, Holland & Holland. The latter is famous within the shooting world for their high-end and ridiculously meticulous levels of craftsmanship. These shotguns and rifles are rather expensive, too, much like the vehicle that was designed to carry them. It’s not unheard of to see H&H hardware with an asking price in excess of £100,000. For some, excessive is a word that simply doesn’t register. While 400 Holland & Holland P38s were assembled, 300 of those were shipped over to North America. So, if

Still, the Holland & Holland interpretation of the Range Rover back then is nothing compared to the modern example being produced today. Those fourth-generation Range Rovers lucky

Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations branch takes a regular long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography Black and lets the gunmaker’s influence flow throughout the vehicle:

As you’d expect, there are also many intricate details you’ll find neatly nestled around the cabin to remind you of what brand of shooting implement you’ll use to blow away your next pheasant.

ship, at least of the four-wheeled variety anyway. ‘I bought this to sell about a year ago,’ he says. ‘In fact I’ve probably had half a dozen Holland & Hollands over the years. I used to keep a unit, and I’ve sold loads, hundreds maybe – but that includes normal P38s as well. ‘I would replace MOT things on them and bits and pieces. I’m no mechanic at all, but you start to figure out what needs doing on them. With the P38s, the first one I owned was actually on the official brochure that they used to dish out, so it may have been pre-production.’

One could easily forget that the Holland & Holland P38 is still a standard P38 underneath. That means that while it was marked up with an obscene price tag and offering luxury like nothing else, underneath the foibles of a P38 still remained. The engine, for example, is the 4.6-litre V8 mated to the usual fourspeed automatic transmission. There’s nothing wrong with that – and it’s a damn sight better than if it had the 2.5 diesel motor spluttering its guts all over the rest of your P38 palace, but V8s of old weren’t exactly without their faults either.

Yes, the body may have been glossed in Tintern Green, but all those underpinnings are still true P38. That means lights on the dash and air suspension failures will be lingering in the back of your mind for the entirety of the ownership. The little touches make it feel that bit more special. ‘I have been scared by them, though,’ Simon laughs as he refers to all the second-generation Range Rovers that have passed through his hands. ‘But when you get one that’s good... it’s brilliant.’ This Holland & Holland Range Rover only ever had 19 brothers and sisters and is only trumped on P38 exclusivity by the super-rare ‘Linley’ limited edition version. It’s a vehicle that throws caution to the wind and thinks, ‘Why the hell not?’ Today’s Holland & Holland collaboration with Solihull may illustrate the scale of change in the automotive industry between the respective generations of these two Range Rovers, but each were and are at the top of their game in terms of luxury – everything a Range Rover should be. The Holland & Holland P38 is a great vehicle; it embodies the spirit of pushing boundaries, just because. It’s also the perfect accompaniment to your shooting outings should you want something a tad old school. If you can find one, and pay for its upkeep, a P38 like this could prove to be the only affordable way into Holland & Holland ownership.

A gift given to you as a child can be something that stays with you long into adulthood – and that was certainly the case for Matt Unsworth. At the tender age of six, he was handed a yellow toy Defender. Today, he is the owner of a full-scale yellow machine and it’s every bit the dream Defender he’d yearned for

e all have memories from our childhood. Some are fond while others may not be, but I’m willing to bet that you, like me, will remember some of the gifts and toys that you were presented with in your younger years. For me, it was my wooden train set; the mini-multi-storey car park I had, my Scalextric and a chest full of small model cars, vans, trucks and anything remotely automotive that built up into a formidable collection. If only they were real. I can imagine Matt Unsworth may share similar memories, especially as one of his standout moments was when he was given a bright yellow model Defender at just six years of age. The vibrant shell sitting upon those mini four wheels would have been quite a sight to young Matthew and I dare say he spent many an hour running those same wheels into the living room carpet, much to the annoyance of his parents. Those were hours you never wanted to end. ‘It’s always been Land Rovers with me,’ says Matt with an especially wide smile. ‘Ever since I was given that toy

I’d always wanted a yellow Defender. For most lads it was Lambos or something like that – but with me it’s always been the Defender.’ Matt was only 17 when he got his hands on the Defender he so craved. But it wasn’t the finished – and yellow – Defender he’d pinned his hopes on 11 years previous. To get to the stage it looks like today Matt has had to minimise playtime and maximise hours in the garage. When I first met Matt, we conversed at the side of his 90 and discussed his recently deceased engine. The engine bay, which has seen various units come and go under that black Puma hood, is just one of the examples of how much has changed since the then 17-year-old got his hands on this 90. ‘It’s now got a genuine Defender 200Tdi unit installed, but started off as the 19J 2.5 TD,’ explains Matt. ‘Then the Discovery 200Tdi engine followed (the one that blew up) and now it’s onto a proper Defender 200. ‘The fuelling and turbo has been tweaked; just with the boost turned up. I fancy a Td5 in the future, though, and maybe a larger turbo and intercooler.’

That’s one of things you’ll notice about Matt – the fact he gets things to be how he wants them to be, even if it takes several years! However, this particular Land Rover is close to Matt’s heart and consequently he’s not planning on letting it go anytime soon. ‘I just need to future-proof it now,’ says Matt, ‘The plan is that everything on the Defender that’s steel will be galvanised – I’m never selling it. I’ve had it so long now that I’m too attached.’ You would imagine that taking away Matt’s yellow 90 would reduce him to tears similar to that of a six-year-old when playtime is called to a halt. That said, it’s not like he’s just ‘making do’ with one Landy. ‘I got a Series III for Christmas when I was 15, then this 90 at 17, the same month as my 1969 Series IIA,’ Matt recalls. ‘My first one was broken up into spares while the IIA was something I worked on before I was 17. I’ve had a couple more Series Landies as breakers, but at the moment I have six Land Rovers to my name… and seven in the household.’ Until recently it’s always been Series and Defender vehicles. But Matt has

recently been the brains behind converting a Discovery 1 into something that resembles The General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard. Coming to a playday site near you soon… Matt says he doesn’t compete because he prefers the freedom. Pay and plays and green laning are the pastimes of this cherished 90, although Matt will concede that his Landy is more of a workhorse than an off-road toy. He states, ‘It was my daily driver up until June last year, but a lot of the time I use it for helping out my girlfriend down the yard; towing horses, dropping bails of hay and so on. I have a few Sankey trailers as well. It’s become more of a show-off vehicle to be honest.’ Maybe it has become more of a statement, but then what a statement to make! This is Matt’s very own greatest hits album of all the changes he’s put together on the 90 over the last eight years of ownership. We may have talked about the memories you retain from your childhood, but this Land Rover has given Matt more memories than he could have hoped for. This Landy has been the college hack, allowing Matt to rock up and instantly ‘out-cool’ everyone in sight. He even met his partner, Vikki, because of this very truck. ‘I owe it a lot,’ concedes Matt. One such memory involves the two of them out and about in the 90 for Matt’s 21st. Being the visionary that he is, Matt decided to grab a photo of the lanes they were taking in. Although the handbrake was on, we all know that a Defender handbrake can be as useful as a glass hammer. In the event, Vikki found herself having to lean over to slow down an out-of-control 90 with her hands on the brake pedal. Good times.

His dad may be roped in to help with some of the heavier stuff at times, but otherwise this has been a work of Matt. ‘I bought it from a friend of a friend and it has been a bit of a rolling restoration ever since. I would have preferred a Td5,’ says Matt in truth, ‘But there is still time! I’d rather add to the fleet than replace anyway.’ Besides likening his 90 to a pet in the way in which he needs to look after this special vehicle, naturally Matt has fallen for the versatility of the truck and the fact that you can express your own taste. ‘Nothing looks out of place on a Defender,’ he smiles. The exception to that rule being when he converted it to a pick-up, didn’t like it, and promptly switched it back. This grown-up Defender has been transformed from something ordinary into something young boys would want on their bedroom walls. ‘It’s got the style and shape, the same barrelled sides – it’s just iconic,’ claims Matt. T

here comes a point in a man’s life when things peak and then they start to deteriorate in a downhill manner. Sometimes surprising quickly, too. The boyish, youthful and fresh-faced looks, for example, and the ability to move quickly under the power of what you consumed earlier at breakfast

time. Our hair, our fitness and the general upkeep of our bodies takes a bit of a back seat while we’re out enjoying life, running round after offspring and focusing on our careers. There are many Land Rovers out there that can relate to this sort of thing. While there may be a select few Green Ovals that are pampered and

worshipped deep into their later years, the majority of Landies – probably the type that you or I have outside our window right now – are old companions that are just part of the furniture, and a constant slightly imperfect presence in our daily lives. Dennis Wright has quite an unusual companion, in the shape of a Series I 107 Station Wagon. It’s a vehicle that is rather rare and was only ever made in Solihull for a few years before being replaced by the 109. But while the Series I 107 may have only been produced for a short period of time, Dennis has owned his particular 107 for the last 41 years, making it a very memorable and much-loved member of the Wright household. ‘I take it out occasionally and I’ll have the grandkids come along with me for the ride,’ smiles Dennis. ‘This was one of my first ever motors. I had an old Hillman Minx at the same time, though.’ If there’s ever proof that Land Rovers stand the test of time and cars like the Hillman Minx don’t, this is surely it. ‘I bought this from a local guy in Skegby, and actually for £425 – he

After being around for the best part of sixty years, you’d expect your body to not be quite the spring chicken it was. It’s the same with Land Rovers. Dennis Wright, though, is more than happy with his truck being a little rough around the edges… was struggling financially at the time and kind of needed to sell it,’ reveals Dennis. ‘The thing is, I’d seen it on the forecourt; then it disappeared. It turned out he’d parked the 107 back at his own home because he didn’t want to sell it!’ he laughs. While most of this Series I’s life has been fairly unremarkable, it has managed to grab a few moments in the spotlight throughout the six decades it’s been alive.

For instance, should you be the owner of a Haynes manual entitled Land Rover Series I, II & III Purchase and Restoration Guide, then turning to page 21 should reveal Dennis’ 107. And if you do happen to find said article, you’ll probably be confused as to why the 107 there is in the shade of limestone and the pictures we have for you here are showing a 107 in grey. ‘It came out the factory as grey, but I bought it in the limestone colour,’ states

Dennis. ‘The guy I bought it from changed it to limestone, but when I went to turn it back to grey eight years ago, I realised he’d never changed the details on the car’s documents.’ Dennis does have plenty of documents, though, showing how much has changed in the motoring industry over the years. The original logbook has got various stamps in from the Rover company and the dates when this vehicle was first registered: 3 April 1958 – just days before the new Series II was unveiled to the world. ‘There was a chap who had an 80” near to where we used to live and I used to work on it with him when I was at school,’ says Dennis reminiscently. ‘I thought they were relatively easy to work on; you didn’t need any specialist tools, and you could take it apart and put it back together again like a big Meccano set.’ It’s the same reason the majority of us have found refuge in this messy hobby; the same reason we have these old relics lying about in our garages and fields and workshops. Like many of us, Dennis has also exhibited his competitive side in the past. ‘I have to admit I am very competitive. I used to trial all over the country and have managed to win the league table a few times – most of our trophies (for the Peaks and Dukeries Land Rover Club) have got my name on,’ says Dennis modestly. He’s very humble about his achievements and even his position as club president. You’d imagine Dennis wouldn’t be the type to shout or brag about winning to his friends, nor does he show off and treat his 107 any different to if it was an old farmer’s 90. Imagine the environment in which Dennis bought his 107 – the mid-Seventies – and think about the fact the Range Rover was only a few years old came across his 107, but something obviously swayed his heart into chasing the purchase of it. Perhaps it was the camping possibilities or the fact it could seat ten people with legs! ‘It was very tidy back then – but then that was 41 years ago,’ he laughs while looking back at some old photos of his Landy. ‘They do last, don’t they,’ Dennis adds rhetorically. ‘Usually you get rid of motors because they rust to pieces or have some serious mechanical issues. They’re pretty adorable really, aren’t they?’ I tend to agree, particularly when looking back at the Series Land Rovers and how their simplicity and foibles often make them some of the most characterful vehicles ever to be seen travelling down the world’s roads. They do last as well, albeit because we help them to. Dennis’, for example, is on a galvanised chassis just like many of these old Series vehicles now are. And quite rightfully so. These vehicles may have become part of the furniture for us, but wouldn’t it be great if in another few decades’ time, they’re still lolling about on our driveways, making people smile and giving us all that messy hobby which we fettlers love so much? I for one, will be counting on it.

A

200Tdi engine is a highly sought-after thing. Strong, willing, capable and thankfully simple to work on, it’s regarded by many as the best engine Land Rover has ever made. But would you want to be the owner of the 200Tdi in this Discovery? It’s an engine with the ability to go round the clock, for sure – but this one has recently racked up its 684,800th mile! That’s like going round the world 27 times, having driven round the whole coast of Britain twice and popped over to Moscow and back as a warm-up. The average Disco, Tdi or not, would have snuffed it more than half a million miles ago. But as we all know, a Land Rover only as good as the man who works on it. That’s where this Discovery’s owner comes in. Land Rover owners earn

Mark Burston may own a Discovery that has covered nearly 700,000 miles, but it’s a Disco that just keeps on giving. And what it gives Mark is a fourwheeled machine he can use every day, yet still allow him to rule the roost at Silverdale too. It’s quite something...

their corn in some weird and wonderful jobs, and Mark Burston is definitely one of them. He builds submarines. Nuclear ones. Two things to say about this. One, Mark is used to working to very, very high standards indeed. Two, he could be in the back end of Scotland today and the deep south of England tomorrow (it’s easier to get the engineer to the sub than the other way round, see…) That’s where all those miles come from. Well, most of them. Most people would choose a dull repmobile for a life of hacking up and down the M6, but Mark is definitely not most people. Which is why you’ll see his Disco getting down and dirty on playdays and green lanes on a regular basis. Actually, though, he stumbled upon the Disco while looking for a van. It wasn’t quite the Transit he’d been after,

but it was mint and only had 48,000 miles on the clock, so he couldn’t think of a reason not to buy it. That was a bit more than 12 years ago. ‘She stayed fairly standard for a while,’ Mark recalls, ‘with the exception of chrome bull bars and some newish lights.’ But then the modifying started – as it often does, with bigger tyres. ‘I quickly caught the disease and found I had to beat my mates. I soon found I needed to cut out the arches and then I lifted the body shortly after.’ And it’s gone on from there. Despite being a vehicle that’s well used to putting on a thousand-odd miles in the course of a week, the Disco has become a 4x4 that’s able to go in as hard at playdays as it does on the motorway. ‘It has been ideal for me because it’s easy to work on,’ says Mark. ‘I can service it within an hour. And it does

Left: ‘I haven’t done loads with the interior,’ says Mark. ‘I have my various gauges to keep an eye on the levels, and a split charge system that will help in the winter. I’ve also just fitted a 120amp alternator to help charge everything up.’ That manual gearstick tells a story, though – the body Mark dropped on to the Disco was from an auto, and needed to be modified to fit everything I want – with the comfort of a Range Rover. It has been a very reliable truck – and an awesome off-roader!’ It’s not the first Land Rover he’s owned, though. In fact, it says something that he’s had it for such a long time, because he’s had quite a few cars in the past – some of them at least as remarkable as this one. Safe to say he doesn’t like ‘em boring. ‘I had a Shelby GT500 at one point,’ he remarks casually. ‘That had 900 horsepower. It had to go, though; it’s the only car that has ever actually scared me! That was a very bad car…’

That’s ‘very bad’ in the ‘very good’ sense, obviously. Mark also had a Range Rover a couple of decades back, which is why he can compare the Disco to one in terms of comfort. Maybe it’s what infected him with the need for another Landy while he was out looking at Transits, too… Just as well it did, though. These days, Mark says, his endless travels around the country give him the perfect opportunity to check out a Continued overleaf

It’s been to many places and experienced extreme hardship, yet it’s still going strong today. It’s almost 13 years since Mark bought the vehicle, with the clock on its original 200Tdi lump standing as a reasonable 48,000 miles. Today, it’s just reached 684,800 miles! ‘And it still runs as good as the day I bought her,’ he says. A Range Rover rad helps with cooling the Tdi. It’s assisted by three Kenlowe fans. Kenlowe fans, that is, as used in submarines…

never-ending list of new green lanes. It’s got to the point where he reckons he knows most of what the byways Britain has to offer! Speaking of exploring, he wouldn’t mind a vacation at some point. Needless to say, his Land Rover would come too. ‘Taking the Disco to Iceland at some point, I’d love that. Maybe for like a three-week holiday. Hopefully we can sort it out when we’ve got a bit more time.’ That might sound like a tall order in a truck with so many miles under it, but Mark has the tools and the skills to keep it going no matter what. And it’s about as ready as it will ever be – Mark doesn’t have many adjustments lined up in the future. A cage would be one, but he’s ruled that out because of the extra weight – and being a boy with a toy, he says it would encourage him to try things that he shouldn’t. ‘I don’t always know my limits!’ he confesses. Something he certainly does know, however, is how to run an old Disco. And here’s a pearl of wisdom you won’t hear from any Hooray Henrys in loadsamoney Range Rover Sports: ‘If you mix a little bit of two-stroke oil in with the diesel, it lubricates the engine that little bit more. It reduces smoke because it burns that much quicker,

there’s less friction in the parts and I’ve been getting up to 40mpg and 600 miles per tank.’ That’s a clever one, to be sure, and it’s been all over the forums for a while, but Mark’s the first off-roader we’ve come across with experience of using the technique. He’s also the first Discovery owner we’ve met to have tried something altogether less common – dealing with the inevitable rust you get on old Discoverys by fetching off the 200Tdi body and craning on a 300 shell to replace it. Bought from a local scrapyard, the new body came from what was originally a Japanese-market Disco. It was, says Mark, immaculate – though of course it didn’t it, being from the wrong car. Not a problem, when you deal with a problem the Burston way. Which is to drive home from work on Friday afternoon (bear in mind that this can be anything up to about 300 miles), lift the old body off by bedtime, work like a nutter all weekend long and finish the job in time for tea and medals on Sunday night. Things the new body didn’t have include the bonnet you see in our pictures. Not a common sight, this… in fact, it’s so uncommon that if you’ve seen one before, it’s because you’ve met Mark already. ‘I’ve recently had the new custom bonnet added to finish her off,’ he says. ‘Chris Higgins made it, at grpmylandy.com. I’ve had loads of positive comments on how it looks, and Chris is looking at producing them on a wider scale.’ The words ‘supply’ and ‘demand’ come to mind… as do others like ‘hot’ and ‘cakes’. The man’s going to do very well out of these. As this illustrates, the image matters to Mark. His vehicles are street machines to him, and that applies just as much to the Disco as to his old GT500. And just as that particular eyeball-peeler of a car was about go as well as show, his off-road warrior is the real thing. Will it still be with him by the time its millionth mile clocks up? You’d be mad to bet against it. ‘A thank you to MM4x4 for all my parts and all the help and advice,’ says Mark, ‘to Chris Higgins for my bonnet and to all my friends and family – Mark Hodgkiss, Ray Timbrell, Jamie Warner, Kai and Jade Burston, Adam Drake and Ian Lison for all the welding. Chris Maitland, Warner Lewis for my electrics and of course, my wife, Tracey Burston for putting up with all the late nights and weekends, the mess and the oil that I manage to get everywhere. Take a leaf from the Forest The sun has finally decided to show its face and so many Land Rover owners are tempted with the array of overlanding possibilities that await on foreign shores. But if you do fancy a better holiday than last year’s, what should you be aware of before you set off ? Forest Four Wheel Drive has the answer

mm... Shall we do Morocco this year, or do you fancy the Pyrenees, dear?’ This is one of the topics being bandied around the household of Land Rover enthusiasts at this time of year. There’s no question that overlanding and holidaying in a Land Rover is now more popular than ever. Let’s face it, the UK is having offthe-beaten-track opportunities cut down to new lows all the time, so it makes sense to explore other lands that offer a greater sense of freedom. Setting off into the sunset with nothing but you and your Landy can only deliver warm fuzzy feelings in your heart and probably the trouser region too. But other than choosing which region to explore (and trouser is not an option here), it would be useful to

know how best to prepare for these trips, and also what to do in situations when you are up a creek and have lost all means of propulsion. Forest Four Wheel Drive is a company operating near Swadlincote on the outskirts of Burton-on-Trent. Based on a farm within The National Forest, this organisation can provide you with an experience that will open your eyes to another side of overlanding, and make you better equipped should the faecal matter hit the fan. They now run a 4x4 Voyager course in conjunction with Woodland Ways. The course is designed to cover two main aspects: how to enhance your skills as an off-road driver and how to use your vehicle and your wits to survive in the wilderness. While Robert Jackson of Forest Four Wheel Drive runs the off-roading ele-

ment of the course, the bushcraft and survival side of things is taken care of by Jay Jenner, a fellow who could quite easily be placed in the same sentence as Ray Mears and Bear Grylls. Now, it’s at this point that I should declare myself to be as comparable to Ray Mears and Bear Grylls as a sloth is to a cheetah - guess which one I’d be. Sure, I’ve seen Mr Mears rabbit on about how you can bang a couple of sticks together to create an inferno and how Mr Grylls believes it beneficial to drink your own urine, but I prefer a cup of tea and a match. Ideally of the football variety. Unfortunately, Jay wasn’t going to let me sit on the sidelines while he did all the perspiring. Cue my finest caveman impression as I tried to grapple with my most primitive instincts. So what’s this course all about then?

Surely there is nothing more to overlanding than to empty the contents of your house into your Land Rover and make haste with a ferry to another land. Wrong. Firstly, it’s a good idea to know exactly how to off-road – we all know someone who has all the gear and no idea. See them giving the throttle everything and the wheels doing nothing but resemble a washing machine on its end cycle. Different surfaces will react differently to your Land Rover and its tyres, too, and at the end of the day a bit of tuition to make sure you haven’t picked up any bad habits is always valuable. But before Robert could get me out in the Land Rover, Jay showed the importance of getting a shelter set up and ready should someone find themselves in the wilderness and far from help.

Jay stresses the ‘rule of three’ when referring to air, shelter, water and food. You are unlikely to survive three minutes without air, three hours without shelter, three days without water and three weeks without food. You get an idea of how to prioritise for survival. After checking that we were able to breathe sufficiently and weren’t trapped underground in a cave, our thoughts turned to shelter and how we could use the Land Rover to help us. Generally, if you want to do overlanding properly, you’ll have a roof rack which provides numerous points to attach rope and canvases for a suitable shelter. If you want a couple of useful tips, make sure to utilise the Land Rover as a windbreak and always slope your shelter so you don’t end up with a puddle on your roof and a headlining sagging more than a Range Rover Classic.

Staying dry, job done – staying warm, this is where things got interesting. Essentially, making fire requires a bit of elbow grease. Jay got the initial campfire going earlier on in the day to allow me the chance to escape onto the off-road course with Robert. When it came to the proper fire tutorial, though, Jay demonstrated an initially complicated-looking method, but one that is very effective at getting the final result. Take a plank of wood (not the human next to you), a rounded-off stick that acts as a drill and what looks like Robin Hood’s primary weapon. While you can imagine there is a bit of sweat involved in creating enough friction to generate an ember, in simple terms you entwine the drill piece within the bow’s string and apply pressure on top of the drill and run the bow back and forth across your leg. Equipment for Explorers Chill on your Travels There is a man called Tony ‘The Fridge’ Morrison who runs marathons with a 42kg fridge strapped to his back. He raises a serious amount of money for charity – which sort of justifies it. But if you want to travel as well as have a chilled beer close to hand, there are easier ways of doing it. We can certainly give a tick to National Luna, who make some excellent fridge-freezers which are ideal for putting in the back of your Landy when you head away from what passes for civilisation. A fridge-freezer naturally extends your abilities to keep food for weeks if necessary. It isn’t possible to imagine a scenario in which beer would keep for weeks anyway. Their National Luna 60-litre fridge-freezer is not exactly something that will fit under the seats but it will carry enough for a reasonable expedition. It’s a fair size, at 75x42.5x53.5cm (WxDxH).

Make it a bumper expedition Got a Defender, need a winch. It’s pretty simple really, particularly if you’re planning to get round the garden centre without getting out of your Landy. Trekk – who sound like they knew how to start their name but not stop it – have come up with a rugged and stylish front bumper

for any Defender model. It replaces the original bumper and is made from 5mm powder-coated steel. In fact you don’t even need a winch to benefit from one of these bumpers, but most probably will have one. Trekk 4x4 thought of all the practical issues in using a winch before they designed this bumper so you

probably won’t be, in the middle of the Rub’ Al Khali. Water! Water! If this water canteen doesn’t make you think of Beau Geste and pith helmets and feet dragging through the sand, then, well, it doesn’t. But it’s a dead ringer for something you’d have seen swinging from a shoulder strap on a soldier from the French Foreign Legion or a Victorian explorer deep in the Sahara or the Amazon. It’s made by 1948 Original Equipment, which seems a good year to choose. As you can see, it’s the proper shape with a leather cover to protect it and a long leather strap so it can go over your shoulder or across your body. You then place that within your straw, or other small kindling until you get that oh so special fire. It’s a very rewarding feeling, and not just because of the warming relief on a cold winter’s day! Previously in the day, after setting up shelter, Robert prised me away from the bushcraft tutorial as we went in search of the off-road course. They’ve got a great course on-site and one that allows Robert to illustrate all the basics of successfully navigating a Land Rover off-road. Robert will take you around the vehicle first – familiarising yourself with your equipment is essential – and then you’ll be given a brief demonstration of how to not do things and how to do things properly. The off-road course incorporates ruts, ascents, descents and water,

all combining to create an effective proving ground. It’s a no-nonsense course, with much the same sort of attitude you get from Robert. Robert is very direct and gives a very good off-roading lesson, but his dry sense of humour will occasionally, and happily, emerge. Having passed my Forest Four Wheel Drive off-roading test, we scooted back to basecamp where Jay was preparing our next lesson. ‘This is not a military course, but neither is it a tree-hugging one,’ said Robert as we rocked up to the shelter. ‘It’s fairly extensive and we try to make sure that everyone can leave with information that they can then go and use.’ I certainly took away the experience of processing a pigeon. By process, I mean taking a dead pigeon and using my bare hands to extract the breast meat ready for our pigeon stir-fry – a dish I can wholly recommend. For those of you with a temperamental tummy, you’d best look away for a moment. To start with you need a dead pigeon. You can usually kill one by giving it a blow to the back of its head using a tree. They have the same sensitive point as us, you see. So now you have a pigeon with a broken neck you need to take its head off. Quite simply, you pull. Next, rotate the wings around until they break and likewise pull away, which should leave you with the body of a pigeon. Now this can be a little tricky. You need to place both your thumbs down its windpipe so that you can prise open its body. A bit of patience and muscle power and you’ll be there. The last couple of steps require careful extraction of the good meat,


where you will peel the breast tissue away from the breastplate. The result, for us at least, was three pigeon breasts ready for the Dutch oven, a delightful cooking appliance that can be used for just about anything, plus as you use them more and more they produce better flavours as they become sealed within the oven’s durable surface. With some onions, peppers and fajita mix, we were able to enjoy one of the best lunches I’ve had in a long time, and all prepared by hand. While gorging on pigeon – tasty meat I might add – it gave me a chance to chat to Jay about how he’d become involved in the bushcraft scene. ‘I joined Woodland Ways by being a customer,’ Jay admits while grapping another fajita wrap. ‘A good friend of mine is an instructor and he said I should come along. I took part in one of their weekend courses and thought maybe there could be a career in this. ‘Like you, I was processing pigeons, I slept in my own shelter and woke up beaming. I didn’t even get 50 yards down the road before I rang Jason (the company director) to ask if they’d consider me should a position arise.’ There is no question that Jay has found his passion. He was happy to announce that he loves imparting his passion to people and, should customers get the same level of happiness from it as he does, then his week is made. ‘The subject is so varied, you’re never going to learn everything,’ he continues. ‘It’s a life-long quest really, but the more I learn, the more I can teach!’ There is so much you can learn from the 4x4 Voyager course. We covered everything from planning your survival and preparing game, to making fire and becoming better off-road drivers. Prospective customers should know that it is possible to use your own vehicle, so these guys really can show you how to prepare you and your Land Rover for whatever the world has in store for you. At the end of the day I was able to leave the site with pigeon in my belly and a whole new outlook on overlanding in my head. It really is valuable information and could save your life. And that is being truly honest. While I left the site, though, we left Jay behind in the field. Don’t worry, it wasn’t a hit and run – instead Jay was wild camping for the night in true Jay Grylls fashion. Well, the answer lies with Paul Wood and within one very logical and interesting workshop tale that has come together to create a harmony of both Land Rover models. And this is Part One of two instalments where we delve into the first flickering of the light bulb

s much as we love our Green Oval machines, even the most die-hard enthusiast has to admit that Land Rovers can carry numerous issues. It could be the headlining on Range Rover Classic, the rear chassis on a Disco 2 or maybe the air suspension on everything. Still, if everything was always perfect on our Land Rovers then surely we wouldn’t have built up such a love affair over all these years. It’s part of the fun after all, being able to get our hands dirty and feel like we’ve rectified the problems ourselves. That’s what makes this workshop tale all the more poignant. Paul Wood is our narrator and he runs us through a problem he had a while back when three Land Rovers were at his fingertips – but none worthy of being on the road. Being a Land Rover fanatic, though, there were always bound to be enough parts to throw something special together. ‘It all started with my mate buying two project Range Rovers on the

cheap: one was a Brooklands – or at least had the full kit on it anyway – and the other was the black one, both of which were V8s,’ says Paul. ‘The black one was actually green and brown from the dirt and moss from being stored in a barn for eight years, whereas the Blue Brooklands had just run out of MOT.’ Paul and his friend figured they could get the blue one up and ready for an MOT with just a few hours of hard work. However, when they came to remove the body kit to see what lay beneath the surface, they quickly realised that the answer equated to absolutely squat. ‘The bodywork came away with the kit,’ says Paul with a hand over his face. ‘So we thought we’d cut the black one up to use for repair panels etc. We gave it a wash before we started and found a very clean car underneath all the grime. We checked it all over and found that every panel looked brand new; the paperwork in the car dating back eight years showed it had been given a full body-off restoration and

Yet more evidence to sug gest that the Discovery had bee n eaten away by parasites every internal panel had been replaced with new parts.’ As the old saying goes, first impressions can be deceiving. Anyway, so far in the story we’ve only heard from two suspicious Range Rovers – but that’s about to change. With the preserved black Rangey now the main focus of the project and the blue one fulfilling the parts supplier role, the guys managed to get the black Classic through its MOT after some fiddling with its V8. But after six months of use, an electrical fault ensured the Rangey kicked the bucket and the V8 never burbled again. Now obviously we can’t exactly wrap things up there, which is why we should talk about how Paul’s mate acquired a three-door Discovery 1 at around the same time. ‘The Discovery was bought to try and tide him over while we tried to fix the RRC,’ recalls Paul. ‘It had several months’ MOT on it and had a full suspension lift kit, so was pressed straight into action. ‘However, MOT time came again, so we did the pre-MOT check and found it was in a very sorry state body-wise; both sills rotten, only one-and-a-half body mounts actually holding the body on, while all wheelarches needed work and the floor was doing its best to resemble a Flintstones car.’ A summary so far then reads a little something like this... A weekend at the quarry

T

here was a creditable turnout for the annual Buxton and District Fun Day, helped in part by advertising before the event, and an easily accessible site on the A515. Over 30 intrepid drivers drove their pride and joy to the undulating, muddy and rocky quarry site at Hartington, which provided plenty of thrills for both novice and experienced drivers alike. The polished paintwork that arrived on site was soon converted into a muddy lustre courtesy of the glutinous gloop. Some, not content

with an exterior colour change, drove their beloved motor through the lake to ensure their chassis and all working parts got a thorough coating of mud. One intrepid driver was spurred on by his mates to try and negotiate a severe drop. Unfortunately, the young fellow hadn’t noticed the crater situated halfway down the slope. The inevitable happened, with the Discovery sinking nose first into a muddy bank. This was the source of much amusement for his friends who then watched and cheered as he was extracted by another Discovery. The summit of one seemingly impossibly steep climb provided the ideal spot for spectators to watch

vehicles, engines roaring, scrabble up the rock face. Those drivers who were successful were greeted with tumultuous cheers whilst failure was greeted with sympathetic groans. The variety of vehicles being driven, from Series Land Rovers and newer Discoverys, to Suzukis and even a quad bike, showed just how popular a spot of mud plugging is. The club was holding its own trial the following day and so, following a good pressure washing of our guests as they departed for home, we set about setting out ten 12-gate sections before a wellearned bevvy. The next day, blustery weather had dried the site overnight and in great

spirits two groups of drivers set-off to complete two very different sets of sections. One on steep muddy banks the other in the unforgiving remains of the rocky quarry. The quarry sections proved technically demanding and indeed damaging with the chairman, Dave Mercer, puncturing two tyres on the same unmovable rock in his V8 auto. Fortunately, the generous nature of a fellow competitor allowed him to continue competing – although in a Tdi manual! The other group were faring slightly better, although over-enthusiastic driving gifted us the sight of witnessing one member attempt the impossi-

ble before gently rolling onto his roof. Lunchtime arrived, as did the rain, turning many of the sections into a muddy slurry which proved treacherous, but no less enjoyable. After finally totalling the scores, the winners were declared: Class One winner was Mitch Whiting with 45 points, Class Two was won by James Foster Johnston on 46 points while Danny ‘Peter’ Riley was Class Three and overall winner on a commendable 20 points. aster @ Eastnor is usually a good weekend for trialling with the Midland Rover Owners Club. There is typically a good turnout for both RTV and CCV events, with drivers from other local clubs boosting numbers to get their chance of driving in the famous Eastnor Castle woods. Rashly, prior to the event, Andy Dennis had offered me the use of his vehicle for a double-drive – even though I’d only competed once before in a CCV trial and normally compete in RTV events in a much larger Discovery 2 TD5. For me, competing with a petrol V8 appealed, at least compared to the one-ton heavier diesel D2! At the start we had 12 drivers: eight in 80” coilers and four in the over 84”Class, with two vehicles being double driven. Walking the first section I was confronted with what appeared to be a 45-degree sideslope and downhill turn, even before the number 10 gate. (I’d never have tackled it with the top-heavy D2). The rest of the section looked challenging, with some tight climbs in and out of a gulley and then a good climb up a root-covered, but partially loose 20ft-high bank. The rest required an improvised route from the top of the bank on the other side that caught a few out due to

the incredibly loose ground and large tree trunk on one potential route. I hadn’t had a chance to drive Andy’s vehicle at all before Section 1, so was glad I actually fitted in the seat and could reach the pedals! However, I was a little nervous approaching that first 45-degree bank – but the rig went round without a hint of drama. Unfortunately, while climbing up the bank to the eighth gate, the harness came undone and I failed the climb while distracted. It was a beginner’s error with the link and latch harness not clicked fully home. Colin Gilbert (all the way from Cornwall & Devon LRC) and Hamish had obviously thought about the section and both got only two points. Section 4 involved a snug fit between a set of trees to line up with a deep and soft ditch which was ripe for cross-axles. The trees caught a few of us out, and the ditch a few more. Nick Vince and Will Guilding (in his first CCV event) both did well to get two points. But Hamish positioned himself really well and got a single point. Section 5 reminded us why Eastnor’s famous for its particular brand of clay mud: the ninth gate required crossing some deep water-filled ruts and an abrupt right. Many of us didn’t quite get the turn right (no pun intended) and slid into the right-hand cane. Andy Foster (also visiting from S&SLRC) and Hamish both managed to avoid this and climb over the ruts a further two times before being stopped by the fourth gate.

Section 7 used bits of ground last used for last year’s ALRC National – including what the novice (me) thought was a fairly dramatic 15ft drop after the fourth gate. From the top, it looked vertical, but the reality was maybe only 60-degrees at the top and then 45-degrees into the bottom of the gulley and the third gate, followed by a loop round and back up the same slope. My plan was to put the nose through the fourth gate, stop, then reverse out. Consultation with Andy suggested that might not be possible as reverse gear required constant holding in. The modified plan was to go over the top regardless, as none of the front-runners were having problems, even though it looked just a little hairy. Going over the edge I mistimed the throttle while the rear wheels were still on the top. The result was that the rear wheels took a rather dramatic jump off the top, making the vehicle nosedive downwards. Apparently it looked frightening, but surprisingly didn’t feel that bad inside! The car hit the right-hand number 3 cane and I got the same score I’d been hoping for. Many others got near the top coming back up to achieve a ‘1’. Andy Foster did really well and got his nose through the first gate to get the only clear. A

fter what seemed an interminably long and wet winter, members of The Dorset Land Rover Club finally managed to embark on a green laning trip at the start of May. In line with the club’s policy of ‘Responsible Rural Recreation’, a voluntary moratorium on green laning had been observed to allow the lanes around Dorset to dry out a bit, and it was worth the wait to have such a brilliant day out. Organised and led by the Social Secretary, Jayne, the Bluebell Bimble certainly lived up to its name. With the blessing of the lovely warm sunshine, it was just perfect. Nine trucks met up at The Red Lion in Winfrith and, once the route had been transcribed on to various maps, Jayne led off the first group of five vehicles, followed fifteen minutes later by the other four, led by club member Steve Pascoe. The first lane of the day was the Jubilee Trail – where the bluebells along both sides of the wooded section of the track set the tone for the rest of the day. Then it was time to head down to Moreton to drive through the ford (where one spectating woman kindly asked: ‘Are you really going to drive your Jeeps through the river? Won’t you sink?’) and then of course up through the forest to pick up the UCR through Sares Wood and across Southover Heath to Tolpuddle. The BOAT from Tolpuddle to Milborne was drier and firmer than anyone could remember – obviously the wet-weather moratorium had done some good. ‘Good things come to those who wait.’

From there, we drove up towards Milton Abbas, picking up the lanes through Great Down Clump and over Coombe Hill before a spell of B-road driving to get to the next BOAT at Piddletrenthide. Yes, a glance at a map will confirm that these words aren’t taken from a Scrabble board. At the Cerne Abbas end, everyone turned north to pick up the next BOAT near Minterne Magna before

dropping down to Up Cerne to pick up the lane across Wancombe Hill. A meandering route then took the group ever westwards through Evershot and Corscombe and eventually – via a couple of shorter but very enjoyable lanes and B-roads – to the final destination of Beaminster. Bluebells, fords and a glorious countryside adventure – that day Dorset really did have it all.
