pproaching half a decade since the last original-shape Defender came off the production line, the vehicle’s iconic shape is set to be resurrected. There’s a new Defender now, of course, and it’s a very different beast, but Land Rover has given the green light to plans for the CSP 575 – an all-new performance vehicle with the same silhouette as the old 110.

Set to go on sale next year in very limited numbers, the vehicle will be built by Bowler Motors – these days, part of Land Rover’s own SVO division. It will be based on Bowler’s Cross Section Platform (CSP) spaceframe chassis and powered by the 575bhp supercharged V8 from the Range Rover Sport SVR – and Land Rover says it’s likely to cost £200,000.

4Goodwood cavalcade celebrates Range Rover’s 50th anniversary

and Rover celebrated the Range Rover’s half-century at this year’s Goodwood Speed Week, with a parade of 50 vehicles – one from each year of production.

The group included a variety of special Rangeys including fire engines and ambulances, as well as expedition vehicles and record-breakers. It was led by a drivable chassis from 1969, used by Solihull’s engineers working on the then-new full-time four-wheel drive

system and coil-sprung suspension that featured in the original 1970 Range Rover, and the first example of the current Fifty limited-edition model, of which exactly 1970 are currently being sold around the world at a starting price of £111,195.

As well as the ambulance and 6x6 fire engine models in the parade, the emergency services were further represented by a 2004 police vehicle.

Equally recognisable was one of the

Darien Gap Rangeys which took part in the 1971 Trans-Americas Expedition – and the group also included the Beaver Bullet, which in 1985 broke no less than 27 different speed records.

‘As we continue to celebrate Range Rover’s 50th Anniversary throughout 2020,’ commented Land Rover UK boss Rawdon Glover, ‘it has been a pleasure to remind ourselves not only of some of the extraordinary forms that the Range Rover has taken over the

years, but also the people and stories behind them.

‘Of course, the gathering was aptly marked by the debut of the new Range Rover Fifty limited edition which epitomises the design, luxury and capability Range Rover stands for today.

‘I would personally like to express my thanks to the owners and collectors who contributed to the event, helping us celebrate this significant milestone in Range Rover’s heritage.’

Caught in the classifieds: Suffix A Rangey that once starred in these very pages!

IF THE SIGHT OF 50 years’ worth of Range Rovers (above) has stirred your soul, here’s one to stir your wallet. One of the earliest Rangeys still on the road is currently for sale – from one of the most respected Land Rover collectors anywhere in the world.

Peter Wales is a well known name in classic Landy circles, and we featured his Suffix A two-door back in our July 2018 issue. He had originally bought the vehicle from Mike Rivett, another noted collector, and carried out what he described as a ‘light restoration’ in order to be able to use it as it was originally intended – lengthy work trips and, when necessary, hauling a trailer.

In particular, the vehicle is still on its original 3.5-litre engine, however this has been entirely rebuilt by V8 specialist RPI Engineering, with the addition of electronic ignition and Weber carbs to help improve on some of the original weak areas.

‘It now runs wonderfully,’ Peter told us at the time. ‘It will go along at 70-80mph quite happily. In the old Classics, sometimes you’d struggle to do 180 miles to a tank. But in this I can get 300 miles between fill-ups.’

In addition to its engine, the Range Rover’s panels have been repaired as necessary and its interior, which Peter previously described as ‘destroyed,’ was completely retrimmed by Nationwide Trim. Peter was careful to keep the period touches that make these vehicles so special, while at the same time blending its original looks with a driving experience that’s far better than they ever were back when this very special Classic was new.

At £28,995, this Rangey is a beautiful car and an absolutely rock-solid investment. You can find it in the classified adverts towards the back of this issue.

Venturing in to the lion’s den…

When Tim Gibson visited a Land Rover main dealer, he was reminded of how much the brand has changed in the last 20 years Words: Tim Gibson I’ve tried so hard over the years not to become that columnist. You know, the one who ruminates on how Land Rover has abandoned its roots and left the community that built it in its fast-paced, large-alloyed wake.

Trouble is, there’s more than a ring of truth to this claim. I remember having a stand-up argument at Gaydon in the early 2000s with a senior marketing executive who told me that Land Rover needed to break free from the enthusiast community. Needless to say, I didn’t get the job he was interviewing me for.

This conversation came back to me recently, when I ventured to the forecourt of my local main dealer for the

first time in years. As a student, I used to hang out there frequently – so much so that I was once offered a job as a salesman. In those days, I could happily while away an afternoon poking around the cars on the forecourt, or letting the parts manager talk me into buying a logoed-up T-shirt or jumper.

But I realise now that those days are gone, and can never be recovered.

Here are three lessons my trip to view a second-hand Disco Sport taught me.

1. If you’re looking at the cheapest car on the forecourt, you don’t belong there Perhaps I misplayed my hand. I should have aimed high and then worked down to the only vehicle I could actually afford to buy. But when you turn up in an old

snorter of an SUV, it’s easy to assume the sales team will see through any attempt to imply wealth. So I marched straight to the Disco Sport (which I’d need a bank loan to fund) and asked for a closer look.

Thirty minutes and lots of Range Rover-driving queue-jumpers later, I worked out that the sign on the wall was incorrect. My business wasn’t their pleasure, after all.

2. The Range Rover Evoque is the nicest car ever built. Period I know I raved about it on these pages a year or so ago, but ber-limey, the Evoque is special. The seats are exquisite, the styling is tack-box sharp and I know from my road test experience that the drive is sublime.

Of course, the dealership didn’t even contemplate letting me have a go.

Because, well, y’know: I’d asked to look at the Disco Sport.

3. If you want to talk Land Rovers with someone, go to your local independent dealer There was a time when Land Rover sales people were green oval fanatics too. Chances are they had an old Series IIA or a cheekily raised 90

tucked away out back, mid-resto or mud stains still fresh from their Sunday fun.

Not any more. These are sales pros with targets to hit and endless pressure from on high. They haven’t got time to chat about the new Defender (unless you’re buying one, of course).

If you want that sort of old-school Landy bantz, head to your local indy specialist. Not only will they be happy to chat. They may let you drive one of the vehicles on their forecourt, too.

One of the good guys

I

t has been my honour to keep the editorial seat warm for Mike Trott over the last few months. An honour and a challenge, because Mike is a proper old-school petrolhead with a burning passion for cars, and indeed for Land Rovers – a passion that’s matched only in its breadth and depth by his diligence and craft as an editor.

Very, very sadly, the honour has become permanent. No company wants to see its best people leave, and that is very much what Mike has been since joining The Landy a few days after our first ever issue was printed. But the fallout from what has happened over the last nine months has been utterly indiscriminate, utterly unfair.

Obviously, nobody could have foreseen the events for which 2020 will forever be remembered. But as a team, we faced them together with the grimseat determination that has become the stock in trade of everyone connected to the magazine business.

Being a true petrolhead, Mike used his time on furlough to…get behind the wheel. If you live in Cannock and have had a pizza delivered by a guy in a Mazda MX-5 this year, that’s our man.

And when he wasn’t doing that, he was out there on the roads putting in the hours to get his HGV ticket. I like to think that after he joined us back in 2014 as a young lad with a head full of Lamborghinis, six years on The Landy convinced Mike that there’s nothing in the world more important than a high driving position…

Best of all, especially for all of you who have enjoyed his writing style over the last few years, Mike is not going to be lost to the world of motoring publications. 8Aerospace tech aids Land Rover’s mission to reduce weight ALUMINIUM BODYWORK will forever be part of the Land Rover story. But the company’s future models are set to feature panels made from revolutionary new materials as part of a weight-saving process made possible by the use of sensor technology borrowed from the aerospace sector.

Currently, Land Rover is taking part in a two-year research project in which advanced lightweight metals and composites are assessed for their suitability to automotive use. In particular, the materials are being tested in various locations around the world for their response to corrosive environments and the stresses of rigorous off-roading.

The test programme involves samples of the new materials, monitored by aerospace-grade sensors, being installed on vehicles which are driven hard in what Land Rover calls ‘some of the world’s most extreme physical conditions.’ In North America alone, where it gets both hotter and colder than pretty much anywhere else a Land Rover is likely to go, the test rigs will put in around 250,000 miles.

The sensors on board these vehicles will feed back data on the materials’ performance to JLR engineers, allowing them to forecast how each metal and composite will behave on production models. The company says this will ensure that they deliver ‘a longer-lasting, high quality finish.’

The research programme is being conducted by an international consortium of aluminium manufacturers and car makers researching the longevity of materials and how they can be made lighter and more durable. Land Rover’s participation is part of a wide range

of initiatives forming its Destination Zero programme – for ‘a future with zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion’ – which also includes research into recycling premium aluminium and reducing the weight of

in-car electronics through the use of printed structural circuits.

‘This research project is a prime example of our commitment to developing lightweight, durable and robust materials for our future vehicles,’

commented Matt Walters, JLR’s Lead Engineer for Metals and Process Materials. ‘Using advanced aerospacegrade technology, such as these sensors, is testament to the quality and standards we are achieving.

With a 3.9-litre V8 engine and LT85 manual box, the vehicle – codenamed SVP-1 – is to be designed by Etienne Salomé, whose creations during 12 years working for Bugatti included the company’s unique La Voiture Noire.

The vehicle, which will be rebuilt from the ground up in Arkonik’s traditional fashion, promises a ‘less is more’ approach.

‘Progress has never been to make things more complicated,’ commented Salomé. ’This special vehicle project will represent the pure essence of the Defender. I am very happy to be designing this incredible vehicle and partnering with Del at b500X and the amazing team at Arkonik.’

Work on what Arkonik is calling ‘The Ultimate Designer Defender’ is due to get underway in January 2021, with a ‘world exclusive debut’ expected before the end of the year.

‘We are working alongside worldclass partners on this ground-breaking research project and will improve the correlation between real-world and accelerated testing as we continue to raise the bar for quality and durability.’

oft-top Land Rovers are cool.

Well, at times they’re freezing, but even when you’re shivering and/or wet through, they’re still cool.

What’s less cool is what happens when you go over in one without a roll bar. You do hear stories of people being saved by their windscreen surround, but if you rely on that to keep you safe you pretty much deserve what you’ve got coming.

There are various designs of roll protection available for the various designs of Defender, of course. Some are more compatible than others with a fabric roof, however – but this unit from

Safety Devices is intended specifically for use on soft-top models.

Not just any old soft-top model, either. Recently introduced to the Britpart range, it’s a military-style fourpoint bolt-in hoop for 200Tdi-engined Defender 90s from 1990-1993.

Protection comes from a 2” OD main hoop which mounts through the body cappings and into the corner brackets.

It’s supported by twin backstays which mount to the waist rail cappings, giving it the strength to keep your vehicle up in most everyday rollovers.

The hoop fits in with a standard set of hood sticks, supporting them but not

interfering with the hood itself as it goes into place. Thus your 90 will continue to look as original as always, with a tidily fitted soft-top that doesn’t stick up awkwardly in the middle.

New version of seminal guide to overlanding

THE VEHICLE-DEPENDENT EXPEDITION GUIDE has long been a reference tome for those planning to go overlanding in a big way. And now there’s a new edition out… well, it’s called Edition 4.1a, so it’s not 100% new, but publisher Desert Winds says it has gained ‘extensive revisions and additional content’ from the Edition 4.1.

The guide, which was originally commissioned by Land Rover, has grown to be available in 57 countries worldwide and is part of the UK and US Special Forces’ instructional material.

And these are people who take things quite seriously. Author Tom Sheppard has more than 100,000 miles’ overland and expedition experience – including the first coast-to-coast lateral crossing and continuous gravity survey of the Sahara, for which he received a Royal Geographical Society award.

In addition to Sheppard’s own wisdom, the guide is augmented by contributions from Jonathan Hanson – the man behind the three-day Overland Expo, held every year in the USA. It also now includes a detailed study into the creation of an expedition vehicle by tech experts Marcus and Julie Tuck.

‘An expedition can be a half-day exploring a track near home, a few days in Wales, two weeks off-road in the Pyrenees, a major journey in Africa – or a development, aid or research project in a remote region. The demands are similar,’ says Sheppard.

In addition to the authors’ combined 60 years’ of expedition experience, a cumulative six years of concentrated research has been put in to producing and continually revising the book.

This eye-catching 90 is a highly prepped off-roader that’s also a stylishly fitted-out street truck.

So it’s two Land Rovers in one. Actually, make that three – because on top of everything else, it’s also a sought-after classic rarity that would be worth a small fortune even in standard form

I

f you want to modify a Defender, there’s no shortage of them around.

You might need a few quid to buy one in the first place, with prices the way they are, but finding a suitable vehicle is not normally a problem.

It’s when the vehicle you find is a rare and special one that you need to stop and think twice. Once upon a time, people thought nothing of cutting up an 80” Series I to make a trials motor, but these days that would be like switching off the central heating and keeping your house warm by setting fire to a suitcase full of £20 notes.

Even in the relatively modern world of 90s and 110s, there are models whose rarity makes them very special and worth preserving. Obviously, Land Rover started knocking out special editions as the decades rolled by, but

there’s probably nothing with more of a mystique to it than a factory-original V8.

Perhaps it’s because so many 90s and 110s from the pre-Defender era went on to have their 2.5-litre engines hauled out and replaced by old 3.5s from the SD1 or Range Rover. Or perhaps because so many of these repower jobs were done badly. Either way, genuine V8s have long been among the most sought-after examples of the breed.

The vehicle you see here may bear out the above, or confound it. It’s a factory V8 with its original engine still in place, however it has been modified more than most – yet despite this, if anything it’s even more desirable than a standard one.

If you’re agreeing with this, and desiring it perhaps a little too much,

the good news is that at the time of writing, it was for sale. Only showing 77,000 miles and up for a touch under twenty grand, it sounds to us like it’s going to make someone’s year. Take a look in the Classifieds section of this very issue and that someone might end being you.

If it is, what you’ll get is a 90 which, in the hands of a previous owner, was quite extensively modified for a life of off-roading. Some of those previous modifications still remain – most notably the ARB Air-Lockers installed in both axles. There’s also a Warn 9.5XP up front, mounted on a Masai winch bumper, and the vehicle sits on a set of ZU alloys shod with BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tyres.

Given the fairly hardcore theme of what went before, it won’t surprise you

Before becoming Luke’s latest project, the 90 was someone’s off-road toy – and quite a toy it was, too, with ARB Air-Lockers installed in both axles. Luke rebuilt it using standard-height suspension, but the springs and shocks are heavy-duty nonetheless and up front they’re mounted in tubular towers. There’s an RTCsteering damper, too, as well as a raised air intake, 45” LED bar, electric winch, tubular front bumper, rock sliders and ZU alloys wearing BFG Mud-Terrains. It might not have tyres the size of your garden, but there’s not a lot of places it wouldn’t go

to learn that the 90 looks a whole lot different now to how it did then. The man to thank for this is Luke Ogden, who picked it up around three years ago and wasted no time whatsoever in getting stuck in.

‘I bought it, rolled it off the trailer and immediately set about stripping it down,’ he says, which kind of creates an image of the vehicle pulling the trailer sitting there with its engine still running while Luke starts going for it with the spanners. We tend to favour the ‘kettle before everything’ approach to workshop time, but that could reasonably be seen as why we’re writing about his Land Rover and not the other way round.

Anyway, when he says he stripped it down he’s not joking. He took it all the way to a bare chassis, which needed a few repairs (all done by Luke himself) before it went off to be galvanised.

Most people would be happy to leave it at that, but before the rebuild commenced he also sprayed it with Buzzweld chassis paint. This is a 90 that’s got at least another thirtysomething years ahead of it before anything more in the way of major metalwork ought to be necessary.

With that done, the axles could go back on. They’re still more or less as they were, though they’ve been uprated in the stopping department with AP calipers, stainless steel pistons and braided lines throughout. The handbrake, meanwhile is an X-Eng disc job, which is a favourite mod among off-roaders

but also very useful on any Defender if you want to be able to leave it parked on a hill.

Also uprated is the suspension – though not in terms of height or flex.

Luke used heavy-duty springs and shocks, as well as Polybushes all round, but kept the height standard for the very practical reason that he needed it to be able to fit in his garage. See, these are the things that really matter when you’re building a truck to take on the world…

Under the bonnet, a cause for great happiness is that the V8 engine has never had anything brutal done to it during the course of its thirty-plus years. Needless to say, Luke wasn’t about to change that. It breathes in through a Safari Snorkel and out through a stainless steel sports exhaust, all of which helps it sound nice, but the main thing is that it continues to purr away like an unmolested V8 should. It has the correct LT85 gearbox, with a heavy-duty clutch and arm installed to protect it from what is one of the very few things to be seen as a common problem in these units, but this is a classic case of not fixing what ain’t broke – and indeed of not doing anything you can’t undo later.

The 90’s body, on the other hand, has definitely been taken down a one-way street. Not a big problem, of course, with panels being interchangeable the way they are, and this is where we get into the stuff that makes this Land Rover so unique.

Where will we start? The two-tone colour scheme, let’s try that. This is more than two-tone, actually, it’s two-texture – thanks to the three coats of Raptor, blended with Land Rover;s own Corris Grey, which have been applied all the way round down below.

Famously strong and scratch-resistant, the Raptor finish has become increasingly popular over the last few years, both as a way of treating high-impact areas and finishing entire vehicles.

There’s almost no limit to what you can do with the stuff in terms of tinting it – we’ve even seen vehicles on which it’s been successfully blended with glow-inthe-dark paint for astonishing signwritten finishes – and when it’s done right, there’s perhaps no other vehicle better suited than the Defender to its tough but sophisticated image.

You don’t normally see Raptor being used to create a contrast with highly polished, smooth black surfaces, on the other hand. Though once more people have seen Luke’s handiwork here, you might. This 90 is an absolute show-stopper, and one look is enough to show you why.

It’s not just the black painted roof, wheelarches and door tops that do it, either. The latter flow backwards into a pair of panoramic side windows – always guaranteed to look sensational, and the way they contrast with the texture of the Raptor-coated panels beneath them makes this 90 unique.

Actually, that’s only partly true.

There’s something else on the vehicle

that makes it unique, too… at least, Luke says he’s never seen another one like it, and fact is neither have we.

It’s not very obvious from outside the vehicle (we tried taking a photograph, so we should know), but from inside the cabin it’s absolutely clear as day.

Literally. A huge glass panel floods the interior with light, giving it an ambience that’s completely unlike that of any other 90 we’ve seen. Even on a relentlessly wet, grey afternoon, Luke’s Defender felt fresh and bright inside – look up, from your perch in one of the a la Puma forward-facing rear seats, and all you see is the sky.

Ask Luke what he likes most about the vehicle, and the glazed sides and roof are what he’ll point to. He’ll express his doubts as to whether the 90 is still suited to off-roading with so much glass surrounding its occupants (the manufacturer says it’s EU

approved 4mm automotive toughened safety glass, and the roof panel is both double-glazed and mounted in an alloy frame, so he ought to be alright), but he’ll also tell you he absolutely loves it.

His other favourite modification is the 54” LED bar mounted just ahead of the top of the windscreen surround. This is a proper Cree array, not the kind of cheap knock-off from, you know, that country over there that’s famous for its cheap knock-offs: Luke is definitely not a man for doing things the wrong way.

Interestingly, he is a man for getting someone else to fit his windscreens.

That and the galvanising are the only two jobs he farmed out: ‘Welding, dismantling, engine rebuild, spraying,’ he says, ‘everything on this vehicle was completed by myself.’

Even though the build spec looks like a shopping list from your wildest dreams, then, this is a Land Rover that

It’s kind of hard to believe you really are looking at this. Each time he rebuilds a Defender, Luke likes to try something different – and for this one, he pushed the boat out by installing a set of panoramic windows and a full width glass roof.

The weather when we took these pictures was absolutely disgusting, which is a shame because seldom would a blue sky have been more welcome, but you can still see the effect – the amount of light coming in to the cabin is astonishing. It’s a cabin worth seeing, too – with a Momo wheel, Corbeau buckets and Luke harnesses, it’s more than a litle sporty, and an extended armest-style cubby box, suede lower dash trim and multi-purpose centre display and switch pod give it the class to go with its elegant two-tone exterior

Obviously, it says something about you if you drive a brand new Range Rover Sport SVR or a psychotic looking modified Defender on 40” tyres – just as it does if your choice of ride

is a sensible Freelander 2 or even a classic old leafer you’re attached to like a fifth limb.

In each case, while you might not be trying to make a statement, you’re doing it all the same. And secretly, you probably love the attention. Especially if you’re the guy in the mental Defend-

er, because why else would you have painted it bright purple or something?

But if you want a Landy that’ll show you a good time off-road and get you noticed on the way home, we challenge anyone to beat this. Based on an early Discovery 2 TD5 in what appears to be GS trim, it’s a now-retired ambulance The Discovery could certainly do with a front bumper to make it look complete, though those exposed dumb irons didn’t prevent it from passing an MOT with no advisories just a few weeks ago. And it’s not short of off-road enhancements, including suspension and body lifts which would let it wear taller tryres than the 265/75R16s currently gracing it. On the inside, the cabin shows the comfortably equipped spec of a GS model – along with the addition of a Whelen siren system, which you can hardly help but get excited about. With fully functioning twos and blues, as well as a public address function on the siren unit, this is definitely not a vehicle for people who want to slip unnoticed below the radar…

22 year old Discovery. It did have a painful failure in 2011 (unusually for a Disco 2, whose rear chassis tend to be the source of most calamities, front end corrosion was noted among a variety of other things), but the following three years saw a hat-trick of passes with nothing more than a single advisory for slight play in the steering.

It’s been on and off the road since then, with MOTs in 2018 and, most recently, October 2020 – both of them passed first time with no advisories at all. Its current owner says the chassis has just been undersealed from front to back, so corrosion shouldn’t be a problem for a good long time to come, and on top of that it’s been treated to a load of new off-road kit.

This includes a 4” lift, made up of 2” on the suspension and 2” on the body mounts. The tyres currently wrapped around its five-spoke Boost alloys are 265/75R16 Insa Turbo Desert Tracks, so that’s a nice sensible tread pattern but perhaps not enough height to go with all that lift. Hard not to feel that going up to 33” from the current 31.5” would suit its stance very nicely.

Something else that would suit it would be a front bumper. You do see Disco 2’s going around with the original unit removed to give them a better approach angle, which is fine but it’s not as if heavy-duty replacements are thin on the ground or prohibitively expensive to buy, and we reckon this is the sort of off-road spec that would be better still with a winch in it too.

There’s still no shortage of good stuff on the vehicle, though, including a snorkel, rock sliders, extended braided brake hoses and a new heavy-duty battery. Something else that comes from being such an early example of the TD5 is that Land Rover hadn’t yet decided to save a few pence by deleting the centre diff lock, to that second gear lever does more than just shift it from low to high. The primary gearbox is an auto, so acceleration is best measured using a calendar rather than a stopwatch, but a new set of silicone hoses means the engine shouldn’t be down on what performance Solihull put into it. Actually, with a straight-through exhaust helping it breathe out, it should be a little better than standard at spinning up those big Insas. Ideal for a twos-and-blues run, then…

But if you’ve ever been Clerk of Course at a trial and tried to get everyone to gather round for the drivers’ briefing, this here is the Land Rover you’ve been waiting for. It would be outstanding value at one of those carnival

processions every English village likes to have once a year (and those are going to be very popular during 2021, assuming vaccine etc etc), and to be honest there’s literally no end to the opportunities for big-kid fun.

All this is more than just an idle observation, because the Discovery is currently for sale. ‘Starts first time every time, no faults, no nasty rot or noises,

all tight and smooth,’ says its owner proudly (and helpfully), but you’re already heading for our reader ads and picturing yourself going NEE NAW NEE NAW NEE NAW at your children as they scuttle off into school in absolute horror, aren’t you? As we said at the top, after all, Land Rover drivers have been known to enjoy making a statement with their vehicles…

This former Scottish Power Defender 110 is a great example of how an ex-utility Land Rover can be turned into a supreme leisure vehicle

W

hen Defenders are retired from life in the service of a utility company, they tend to go one of two ways. Either they get chopped about horribly and deteriorate rapidly

into self-propelled horrors, or they get lucky and fall into the hands of owners who appreciate what they’ve got.

This 110 is very much the latter kind.

A 2.4 Puma dating from March 2011, it was originally bought and specced by Scottish Power – in whose enthusiastic hands it had clocked up six figures well before its fifth birthday.

Since then, its mileage has increased more steadily and now stands at around 150,000.

Not a lot for a well maintained Defender, and one

of the good things about buying an ex-utility truck is that while it’s likely to have been worked hard, it will have been looked after too.

This one certainly fits that bill – and as well as being kept looking good from whatever angle you choose to view it, it has been converted into that most 110 of things, a camper. The classic utility back lends itself to this, obviously, with its lockers and shutter doors, and in the hands of its current owner, Fraser Howat, it has become an eye-catching off-road machine too.

A 2” suspension lift gets the ball rolling nicely here, and as well as BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains (fitted on a nice set of pepper-pot steel rims) the 110 has a raised air intake, full-width LED bar and Ramsey winch, the latter sitting on a heavy-duty front bumper.

What you can’t see is that those wheels are turned by a 2.4 TDCi engine with a Stage 2 remap – giving it 190bhp and deleting the extremely tiresome factory-fitted speed limiter. The engine breathes through a straight-through exhaust, too, so there’s no danger of it being choked up by back-pressure.

That’s not the longest list of mods, but they’re already enough to transform a Defender’s fun potential. And there’s still a whole lot more to go, too.

Move inside, and you’ll find that Fraser has renewed the front carpets

and fitted a nice set of bucket seats to tick the comfort box. There’s a modern Bluetooth stereo in the dash, too – along with a reversing camera, which is definitely a bonus in a big unit like this.

Further back, the cavernous space left empty when Scottish Power removed all its equipment from the vehicle is now home to a bed, first and foremost. There are cupboards and a gas cabinet, too, and a diesel-burning night heater keeps things warm and toasty whatever might be kicking off outside. Should the weather being doing the other thing the weather likes to do to Land Rovers, factory-fit air-conditioning means a good night’s sleep remains possible.

Electrics for the camper part of the 110 run off a dedicated leisure battery, which powers a 12-volt system with its own fuse box and a plumbed-in 240-volt inverter. There’s a set of lights in the rear roof, too, as you’d expect – and work lights on the rear of the body, meaning Fraser can keep on barbecuing way after the sun has dipped below the horizon.

As we mentioned above, this is a Defender that looks the business. And however hard you look, from whatever angle, that remains the case. Typically of a Scottish Power rig, it’s white – but the application of some chequer plate to the lower body and wing tops, not to

mention a professionally done coat of black paint on the roof and side doors, it now has a funky two-tone appearance going on.

Fraser says that this year, the 110 has had new injectors and glow plugs, a clutch and transfer box input shaft, wheel bearings, nearside pin bearings and an all-round bush kit for its suspension. ‘Anything it’s needed has been done,’ he says. ‘And more.’

So, no change from its days of being looked after by Scottish Power, then. Though instead of being used by maintenance teams working on remote infrastructure, these days its wheels leave the tarmac in search of more leisurely pursuits.

Sadly, though, somewhere else its wheels will soon be leaving is Fraser’s driveway – because, while he says he doesn’t really want to sell it, ‘needs must.’ We say ‘sadly,’ but if you’ve got an eye for good Defenders, and for a good night’s sleep, this might actually be the happiest news you’ve heard in a long time.

Better still, at £14,995 this sounds like a great deal of Land Rover for your money. At the very least, good luck trying to build a Puma like it for even twice the money. You know you’re interested – and you also know that your next stop is going to be the Classified ads in this very issue of The Landy…

Whether you travel downthrough France or take an overnight ferry, Portugal is a very achievable destination for a driving holiday. It’s also home to one of Western Europe’s last remaining areas of true wilderness, as well as a vast network of unsurfaced trails on which to explore it. Could there be a more perfect recipe for an overland adventure?

T

he white, sandy beaches of the Algarve. The turquoise blue seas of the Atlantic. The myriad pastel shades of Porto.

And of course the imposing, occasionally ostentatious architecture of Lisbon.

These are some of the images typically conjured up when contemplating the fabulous attractions of Portugal.

For the intrepid overland adventurer however, there is more. Very much more, in fact. For hidden away in Por-

tugal’s seldom explored interior lies a vast and unspoiled natural wilderness, teeming with flora and fauna.

Unusually for a western European country, Portugal’s interior has spent almost half a century untouched and undisturbed by the destructive effects of humanity. Following the Carnation Revolution of the mid-seventies, the farming estates of the gentry were usurped for the benefit of the masses, with the inevitable outcome: once-

grand old farmhouses, derelict and collapsed in on themselves, presiding over formerly productive farmlands which now lie idle. It’s a sad story in some ways, but nature wastes no time in reclaiming what’s hers – and the result is that much of Portugal has returned to the unspoilt state you’d typically associate with parts of Africa.

From the delightful coastal regions of the south west to the intriguing ancient woodlands of the north east, one is

The views stretch as far as the eye can see, usually framed by thickets of Valencian Oak or the remnants of hardy Mediterranean Olive plantations. In May, following the spring rains, carpets of wild flowers abound.

I always particularly enjoy leading tours through these wonderful landscapes. Our route takes us through the Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, deep down in the south west, then north easterly over the mountains of Monchique and the farmlands of Alentejo. We cross the two major rivers of Tejo and Douro as we head all the way up the to the north-eastern corner

of the country, through diverse natural terrain which includes the occasional driving challenge.

While the campsites we use are of the best quality, the emptiness of the countryside means there is ample opportunity for undisturbed wild camping in beautiful wilderness locations, usually under spectacular stars with zero light pollution.

Exploring and enjoying the beauty of the natural environment is the primary objective of this trip. Highlights include the stunning scenery of the pristine

unspoiled Portuguese countryside, and to this end we traverse the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede, the Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional, the Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata, the Parque Natural Douro Internacional and the Parque Natural Serra de Montesinho.

All are areas of outstanding natural beauty – and the whole time we are travelling almost exclusively off-road.

It would be remiss of me though not to mention the man-made features of

Issue 83: Oct 2021 the trip. Those with an interest in the built environment will be fascinated by the plethora of medieval castles and forts en route (we are skirting the Spanish border after all), which often make for interesting lunch stops.

Extremely well-preserved Roman architecture abounds, too, notably in the historic centres of Evora and Elvas.

Here we can pass a few hours out of out vehicles, roaming around among the splendours of ancient history.

It’s often said by overlanders that Portugal is the best destination in

Western Europe for unhindered adventure travel aboard a Land Rover.

And this tour certainly backs that up. Breathtaking coastline, beautiful countryside, wide open spaces and the freedom to explore the plentiful tracks, together with a warm-hearted and most welcoming population (albeit a rather sparse one), make this a must for all off-road enthusiasts who value the natural environment and appreciate the unspoiled beauty of a genuine wilderness. If you love nature, you will adore Rural Portugal.

Part 3: Our 90’s session in the Britpart workshop comes to a close, for now, as its rotten old crossmember is ground off and a shiny new one is welded in to replace it. Following a load of prep stretching back over the last two issues, the job is finally done…

O

ver the last couple of issues, we’ve been following the prep jobs that need to be done before you change a Defender’s rear crossmember. Ours had started to rot out after a life of off-road action, and while the MOT tester was yet to knock it back it was only a matter of time.

So we paid a visit to Britpart, who pulled the 90 on to their ramps to fit one of the verious crossmembers they stock.

Instalment one was about the general prep required, while last month we

looked mainly at the potentially horrific business of shifting the fuel tank out of the way. Now, finally, with everything shifted, it was time for the sparks to fly.

This is fun, and of course it also involves making lots and lots of noise.

But before you fire up the grinder and make mortal enemies of all your neighbours, the absolutely critical thing is to measure up.

Once you’ve done this, the next thing is to check the measurements you’ve just taken. Then check them again. Then go away and have a cup

of tea and when you come back, check them again.

‘Measure twice, cut once,’ is a favourite old woodworkers’ saying, and all they’re going to wreck if they get it wrong is a piece of wood. You’re dealing with your chassis. Wreck this and, well, at least you’ve got an excuse for buying that new galvanised one you were eyeing up before plumping for a crossmember instead.

lot of sparks flying about, and no end of heat once the welding begins, so look around for anything vulnerable and take time to move it out of the way.

The conduit for the wires to the rear lights works a lot better in its non-melted state, for example.

You want to watch your step when the old crossmember comes free, too.

Which, being that it’s rotten, might

happen without warning. The job’s best done with a combination of grinder, power hacksaw… and steel toecaps.

As these pictures show, so long as you can weld competently there’s nothing in the job to be scared of.

Apart possibly from when the old crossmember comes off and you see what’s inside your chassis. Ours is still good and solid, but there was still a

fearsome amount of dried mud inside it. If you want to know why people spend good money on getting their chassis pumped full of wax, some of these pictures will show you that, too.

With the new crossmember in place and the reassembly job complete (not as quick as it sounds), we had one Defender with a renewed rear. Now to worry about the rest of it…

The best ever classic wagon?

W

hat’s the best-loved Land Rover of them all?

After the original 80, the 107” Series I Station Wagon has got to be in with a shout.

Long-wheelbase vehicles can look ungainly next to their smaller cousins,

but there’s something about the 107 that makes it look wonderful. Perhaps it’s the angular lines, or the patched-together appearance of the rear body… or maybe it’s just that when you see one, you know you’re looking at a bona fide piece of Land Rover’s history.

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available.

Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run.

In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover.

Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example.

These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

Either way, for a classic collector the 107 Station Wagon will always be a star.

It was only ever a rarity, and a good one is worth a fortune, but seldom could there be a more satisfying restoration project. All the usual caveats apply, of course, as with any classic, but this is

£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game.

The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon?

Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s

£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models

£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of.

Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Appearance isn’t to everyone’s taste. Exclusivity over regular models means they command a price premium

£2500-£19,000 A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come.

Pros: Excellent parts availability. Easy to work on. Unlimited potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition

Series II/IIA (1958-1971)

£2500-£40,000

much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items.

A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy.

The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body.

Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing

Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)

£2500-£15,000

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status.

By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale.

Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop…

Pros: A Land Rover like no other, if that’s what you want Cons: Especially brutal to drive, and to find parts

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real

101 (1972-1978)

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when

£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on.

Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

Defender Tdi (1990-1998)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock.

The earlier 200Tdi is simpler and less refined than the 300, which arrived in 1994. But both are superb engines.

Do be aware of whether you’re getting a genuine one, though.

Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V8 soundtrack. Everybody who sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running costs. Expensive to buy, too

£4000-£24,000 Loads of owners have swapped in Tdis from Discoverys; these aren’t worth as much, as they’re less of a known quantity, but a good one can still be a lifelong companion.

Pros: Excellent off-road.

Arguably the very best engines.

Old-school electrics Cons: Many have been used hard. Not rustproof

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones.

As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis.

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

It has issues, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by mismatched tyres.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures,

£6000-£30,000 Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can still be a DIY machine – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever.

Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax

£400-£5500 but today’s replacements are much more robust. The TD4 diesel is your best bet – but check the condition of the injectors first.

Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and sixspeed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in.

Many people dislike the TDCi, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) The Freelander 2 is a refined and affordable SUV with a strong 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine and a strong level of practicality. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there… but do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays.

You will always pay a premium for a Puma – but look after it and you may well never see depreciation.

Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £5000-£85,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000 The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there are people who do just that, preferring to invest money in a resto than spending it on a new model.

A very early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good

condition. An awful lot have been neglected and/or abused – but if you’ve got the skills, a resto would be the ultimate hobby that pays.

Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to own, even today. The problem is that they’ere very complex and very, very good at going wrong.

Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go.

Electronics are laughably flaky.

And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills.

Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust Cons: Electrics. Be very afraid

Range Rover L322 (2002-12)

The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-

liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown.

The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class.

The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road.

Nevertheless, it is economical

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable.

It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace.

Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it.

Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most

most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty.

Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here.

Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

Discovery 5 (2017-on)

The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it.

All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks...

Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price

£25,600-£80,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery…

Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery

The original Discovery was based on the Defender of the time, but

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality.

The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

with a 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined to drive, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine.

Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays.

Lower body rust is a big killer, too.

So it’s rare to find a good one now,

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)

The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road

and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area.

The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always

Discovery Sport (2015-19)

You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit.

£31,600-£55,000 hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 Evoque escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive.

Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts availability. Epic off-road ability Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

Td5 rebuilt with Autobiography look

AS THE DEFENDER neared the end of production, Land Rover cashed in with a series of special editions that seemed enormously pricey at the time. Of these, the Autobiography was the priciest of the lot, at just under £62,000.

This 90 only costs about a third of that, but it carries off the appearance of the original with its Sawtooth alloys and two-tone paintwork. Actually, with a DRL front bumper, heavy-duty side steps and panoramic rear side windows, you could argue that it looks even better than the 80 genuine Autobiographies that came out of Solihull.

It happens to have 138,000 miles under it. But it’s also had a full rebuild, so that doesn’t matter all that much. And being from the year 2000, it’s powered by a Td5 engine – making it instantly more desirable than anything with a Puma lump.

The engine has had a new turbo, and the suspension has also been renewed. And when you get inside, you see that as much attention has been paid to this area as it has to everywhere else. There’s a modern infotainment module on the dash, as well as Sparco front seats, a Nardo wheel and plywood flooring in the back.

The carpets are new, too, and the cabin has been soundproofed.

It’s not an original Autobiography. You might say it’s even better – and it’s much cheaper to buy! The 90 is in the adverts on this page.
