The latest model to get the PHEV treatment is the Velar, which becomes available in P400e form – meaning the entire Range Rover family is now fully electrified.

Already familiar elsewhere in the Land Rover line-up, the P400e power train combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a 105kW electric motor to deliver 404bhp and 472lbf.ft and a 0-62 time of 5.4 seconds. In the Velar, it returns efficiency figures of 130.2mpg and 49g/km, with an all-electric range of 33 miles and an 80% fast-charging time of as little as 30 minutes.

At the same time, the Velar is also becoming available with new mild-hybrid straight-six petrol and diesel engines. The D300 and P400 units both

4Anti-4x4 campaigners fail to purge Land Rovers from Lake District rights of way

T

wo precious rights of way in the Lake District will remain open to 4x4s – after a prominent anti-vehicle group failed in its attempt to overturn the National Park Authority’s decision not to close them.

Following a crowdfunding campaign, the Green Lanes Environmental Action Movement (GLEAM) brought a judicial

review challenging the LDNPA’s decision not to impose Traffic Regulation Orders on Tilberthwaite Lane and High Oxen Fell. This was heard in the High Court in June.

A fanatical organisation whose lobbying was behind the anti-democratic manoeuvrings at the heart of the 2006 NERC Act, which wreaked inestimable

damage on the countryside, GLEAM sought to overturn the LDNPA’s decision on three grounds. Broadly, these were that it had made errors in the TRO process and had failed to properly apply the Sandford Principle – which says that where conflict exists between conservation and public enjoyment, conservation should take priority.

Approaching three months after the hearing, Mr Justice Dove published his judgement dismissing GLEAM’s claim on all grounds. Thus the park’s decision stands, and the lanes remain safe.

Commenting on the judgement, the Green Lane Association said: ‘This is a very important case as it has implications going forward in regards to how National Parks make decisions on matters where there is alleged conflict between recreational activities and environmental interests.’

Quoting various self-interest groups and other anti-vehicle organisations, GLEAM attempted to shrug off its failure in court by saying: ’This does not affect the validity of GLEAM’s central claim, that off-roading on two fell tracks

near Little Langdale is environmentally and socially unacceptable.’

The organisation’s Chairman, Dr Mike Bartholemew, said: ‘Off-roading in Little Langdale is damaging the natural beauty of this part of the National Park, and… the LDNPA is refusing to stop the damage, even though it has ample powers to do so.’

Save the Lake District, another anti-vehicle organisation, added: ‘The current Coronavirus crisis has made it clear beyond doubt just how precious the landscapes of all the national parks are and how questionable is the unrestricted use of motor vehicles on fell tracks.’ The organisation did not expand on what it believes the disease has to do with rights of way.

Saga of neglect finally coming to an end on iconic Peak District lane THE LONG-RUNNING SAGA of neglect on a popular Derbyshire right of way appears finally to be coming to an end. Bamford Clough, a steep but well surfaced lane between Hathersage and Castleton in the Peak District, was closed temporarily in 2013 – but hasn’t been open again since.

At the time of the closure, Derbyshire County Council said the closure was required for safety reasons because of a dangerous cable beneath the road surface which had become exposed by erosion. Few people would argue against an emergency closure being necessary in such circumstances – however since then, the temporary closure orders have been routinely renewed on a rolling basis, suggesting that nothing has actually been done to repair the right of way.

During this time, the Peak District National Park has continued to wage a war against vehicular rights of way in Derbyshire. The county was already notoriously anti-4x4 prior to the PDNPA’s guerrilla campaign against freedom, which has so far vandalised public access to Washgate Lane, Stanage Edge, Roych Clough, Brushfield, Chapel Gate and more.

This piecemeal attack on rights of way has come alongside a total refusal to engage with vehicle users’ organisations – something

which is also apparent in the way the Green Lane Association’s attempts to find a solution to the Bamford Clough stalemate have been relentlessly ignored.

‘Earlier this year, after many polite enquiries had failed to elicit any progress, GLASS formally objected to the Secretary of State about the proposed further extension of the TTRO in July this year,’ explains Derbyshire Rep Chris Mitchell. ‘GLASS also served a Section 56 notice and solicitor’s letter to Derbyshire County Council stating that Bamford Clough was out of repair, and requiring DCC to confirm that they are responsible for its maintenance.’

Why it took a legal approach to force the authority’s hand is anyone’s guess. But with its back now against the wall, DCC responded with confirmation that it is indeed responsible. Not that this was in any doubt, however the formal consequence of this is that unless repairs are carried out within six months, GLASS can apply to the Magistrates’ Court to enforce the notice.

‘I am pleased to advise that DCC agreed to commence work in August on the repairs to Bamford Clough,’ says Chris. Cue the sound of celestial fanfares and choirs of angels.

The work will be carried out in two phases, with a pause in between to get the worst of the winter weather out of the way and

allow consultation with affected parties. The first part of the programme, to the lower part of the route, is scheduled to be completed by the time you read this, while the second will be completed in the spring of 2021.

While this is promising, given the climate of official hostility towards motor vehicle users in this area nothing can be taken for granted. ‘GLASS local foot-soldiers will continue to monitor DCC’s repair activities on the route,’ noted Chris. ‘And if it appears that work is not progressing satisfactorily, we will escalate the Section 56 notice to the Magistrates’ Court.’

Bamford Clough runs close to houses at its southern end, and the potential for disturbance by irresponsible use does have to be acknowledged. For supposedly safety-critical repairs to be so wilfully neglected is clearly a nonsense, however – especially when seen in the light of a strategic, long-term campaign of aggression and abuse towards responsible motor vehicle users which has blighted the Peak District over a period of many years. Thanks to the Green Lane Association, it appears that 4x4 drivers will soon be able to once again enjoy the beautiful vistas across the Hope Valley from the top of Bamford Clough – but the overall view in the Peak District as a whole will remain as ugly as ever.

Gibson’s Gab A life less ordinary

Amid all the fascinating people he’s met as a journalist, Tim Gibson says one stands out as being particularly special Words: Tim Gibson I’ve been thinking a lot of late about Rudi. I met him very near the start of my career, while staffing for Total Off Road magazine. My editor, a certain Mr Kidd, told me to be at a McDonald’s restaurant somewhere off the A20 and keep my eyes peeled for a distinctive 109-inch Series III. The driver, he said, was called Rudi, and had a fascinating story to tell.

Turns out that “fascinating” wasn’t the half of it. Rudi lived on the road, in his Landy. He’d bought it 20 odd years previously, after undergoing a personal tragedy that he clearly didn’t want to discuss. Giving up his job as a businessman, he took to the asphalt and had spent the rest of his life roaming

from place to place, exploring the world as a full-time overlander.

There’s something about Rudi that has stayed with me over the years.

Since meeting him, I’ve interviewed a number of fascinating people: some famous, some with amazing personal stories and some who just happened to come my way when I was in search of a scoop. To this day, he’s the only one who couldn’t tell me his surname, though I never worked out if it was because he’d forgotten it, or just wanted to leave his old identity behind.

Whatever, Rudi is the name that’s stuck in my mind. I think I was drawn to his mystique, to the sense of freedom that comes from the thought of just living in the moment, going where the wind blows and hanging out with

whoever you happen to come across that day.

You could say that Rudi epitomised what I love about Land Rovers. He embodied the sort of life that had drawn me to the brand as a young kid – one whose walls and school exercise books were adorned with pictures of Defenders trekking across the Sahara or battling through the Balkans. When I thought of Land Rovers, they were right in the heart of the world’s most austere landscapes. And as a young dreamer, I knew that driving one would give me a teeny taste of that same spirit of adventure, even if I only used mine on the long commute to work.

As it happens, my first experience of driving in the desert was behind the wheel of a Dakar-specification

Mitsubishi Shogun, and the closest I got to the Balkans was an invitation to drive a Vauxhall Vectra along the Adriatic Highway (which, funnily enough, I turned down). But even now, when I see a Land Rover I think of its unique potential to take me to faraway lands and live my dreams.

Rudi realised that potential and lived the life that will always be just beyond the grasp of most of us, bound as we are by convention and the security of

our daily routine. But when we clamber into our own Landies we channel his spirit, and that of others like him. Even as we turn on to the motorway or join the queue of cars heading to the office, we feel that yearning for adventure stir within us. And we know that, thanks to his example, it’s somehow satisfied, even though it may never be fulfilled.

Thanks Rudi. Wherever you are today, I hope you’ve found what you were looking for.

Scotland and a Landy: the perfect match!

N

ot everyone who reads The Landy is a fan of green laning.

In our early days, in fact, a Britpart dealer who was going to stock it changed their mind because we wrote about ‘these idiots who go about destroying the countryside,’ etc etc.

Those idiots do exist, and they’re no friends of mine. But I’m a huge fan of green laning, so long as it’s done responsibly, and I firmly believe that it has a part to play in the life and livelihood of the British countryside. It’s a freedom I have come to treasure.

As you might well know, it’s not a freedom that exists in Scotland. The law up there, where I come from, is vague and ill-formed, meaning there are many trails which tick every box to be a green lane – but there’s nothing definitive to confirm their status.

If there was, Scotland’s lanes would be the envy of Europe. They would be an immensely valuable resource – and one which, because the idiots have never been at them, could be managed by permits from the word go and kept in a natural, well maintained state.

There are various reasons why this won’t happen. For one, much of the Scottish countryside is now investment land for foreign billionaires whose only interest is in using it for shooting wildlife.

There’s also a very narrow but incredibly influential versions of conservation which throws up the shutters at the very mention of a Land Rover.

There is some good news. As a result of Covid, Celtic Routes has opened up as a provider of self-drive tours in the wildest part of Scotland, using a fleet of prepped Disco 4s. It’s not about green laning, but it is about using a Discovery to discover places, and you can read about it in this issue.

Scotland should be the jewel in the UK’s rights of way crown, not mired in a legal bog that’s convenient for all the powerful interests who don’t want people to be free. What Celtic Routes is doing won’t lead to any changes in terms of the way its lanes are managed, but it will at least let more people see my home country from aboard a Land Rover – and that’s a very good start.

Future Land Rover carpets and trims to be made by recycling plastic waste

F

irst there was vinyl. Then there was cloth. Then there was leather. And now, get ready for Econyl – a sustainable yarn made from plastic ocean and landfill waste, which will feature in the trims and floor mats of future Land Rovers.

Created by Aquafil, Econyl combines recycled industrial plastic, fabric offcuts from clothing manufacturers and discarded fishing nets to create a form of nylon fibre which can be woven like traditional yarn. It has already been used commercially in handbags, backpacks, swimwear and watch straps – and Land Rover intends to adopt it as part of its Destination Zero pledge to achieve a waste-free manufacturing process.

As well as turning plastic waste into a usable commodity, the company says Econyl reduces production emissions by 90% compared to the traditional oilbased alternative.

Each year, Aquafil recycles up to 40,000 tonnes of waste. That equates to 280,000 barrels of crude oil that can be left in the ground, and more than 260,000 tonnes of carbon emissions saved. The production process sees raw material broken down and stripped of by-products, which are themselves removed and sent to other industries for recycling, before being spun back into the yarn which will be used in future Land Rovers’ interiors.

cal and performance characteristics as raw fossil material, allowing it to be processed into a fibre for carpet flooring and textiles. ‘This yarn can then be used to manufacture floor mats for future Land Rover models, with the goal of using more environmentally conscious and sustainable materials while still providing customers with a premium and hard-wearing product.

The process is helping Jaguar Land Rover move towards a circular economy as part of its journey to Destination Zero.’

Land Rover already offers a premium Eucalyptus textile interior on the Range Rover Evoque – along with Kvadrat, a high-quality material combining durable wool with a suede cloth made from 53 recycled plastic bottles per vehicle, on

the Evoque and Range Rover.

‘We place a great deal of focus on the creation of new, sustainable materials using the latest, most innovative techniques and textiles,’ said Adrian Iles, Senior Engineer of Interior Systems. ‘Minimising waste, re-using materials and reducing carbon emissions sits at the heart of our Destination Zero mission. This pioneering materials research is one of the key ways we’ll achieve this and is an integral part of our design offering to our customers.’

This approach is paying dividends, too. Earlier this year, JLR received its second consecutive Carbon Trust certification, confirming that its operations across the UK meet the internationally recognised PAS 2060 standard for carbon neutrality.

Rated at IP44 for protection against water ingress, the Tri-Spector promises to be resistant to chemicals and workshop solvents. No small matter in the environment you’ve already got in mind for it. Its housing is tough enough to let you drop it from up to a metre, too.

Eternal Flame Few things stir the soul like a fire engine in full cry. This Series III’s days of blue runs are behind it – but so too is a sensitively done restoration job, meaning it’s now set fair to carry on forever

veryone loves a classic fire engine, and during Land Rover’s first few decades a good many different models were converted for this purpose. Of these, a significant number were turned in to fire tenders by HCB Angus of Totton, Southampton.

During a history of more than six decades in business, the company built around 6500 appliances on an extensive range of base vehicles from manufacturers including Bedford, Commer and Thorneycroft. Many of the most familiar fire engines seen on British roads were built in the Angus

factory – right up until the company’s closure in 1994.

In addition to these, HCB Angus was also a prolific Land Rover converter, with appliances based on the Series IIA, IIB and III all appearing in its brochures. The vehicle you see here is a fine example of the latter, which lived

its working life in North Wales before being disposed of in 1992, just short of its twentieth birthday.

First registered in 1973, the 109” Series III was supplied newly built to Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire Fire Brigade and based at Chirk.

It didn’t get much time to settle in,

however – because a year later, local government in the UK was completely reorganised, taking the fire service with it. Its old owner was broken up and it became the property of the new Clwyd Fire Service.

The extent to which the vehicle’s fire fighting equipment remains intact really is remarkable. The pump, water tank and hose reel all join the hoses themselves in being original – even the ladder rack has survived this time, however. During the early seventies, a series of conflicts in the Middle East saw the price of fuel begin to shoot upwards – some of us are old enough to remember where we were when we heard the devastating news that petrol had reach £1 per gallon…

The bosses at Clwyd Fire Service were obviously a cost-conscious lot. Either that or they’d heard of the Corwen Carwash. Because Corwen is where the 109 ended up being stationed – and when it got there, it was under the power of a shiny new engine.

When it came out of the factory, the vehicle had been powered by a 2.25 petrol engine. At some point during its time with Clwyd, however, this was replaced with a 2286cc five main bearing diesel. This remained in place for the duration – and is still under the vehicle’s bonnet now.

Following its sale into private hands in 1992, the 109 was kept very much as it was built. Being so popular with collectors, Land Rover fire engines are rarely messed with much – the basic original seats were replaced with more

comfortable items, but that apart the early engine change is pretty much all the butchery it has suffered.

Since then, the vehicle has undergone a light restoration including new brakes, cylinders and shoes, and the cab floor has been replaced. Its bodywork was tidied up, too, before being given a fresh coat of paint – and this, along with a new set of wheels and tyres, has got it looking fully refreshed.

Importantly, the majority of the Land Rover’s firefighting equipment is original. This includes the ladder rack,

hoses, reels and water tank, as well as the pump – though this does need a replacement inlet valve. The current owner, who completed the restoration and now has the vehicle for sale (you’ll find it in our Classified ads on pages 32-33), notes that some wiring also needs to be finished off, and that the aluminium ladders have been bolted into place for display.

He also advises that the flashing blue lights remain in working order – but recommends that you don’t use them ‘except if you see a house on fire!’

Very wise, we’d agree – they don’t half make a good way of attracting attention at a show, though.

HCB Angus had already been going for almost two decades by the time the Wilks brothers had their famous meeting on the beach in Anglesey, and though it’s long gone it will forever be linked with the history of Land Rover fire engines. This is a vehicle that’s part of the history of both companies – and, with its timely engine conversion, it tells a story about the changing times in Britain back then, too.

Yellow but not Mellow

You might have thought that all 110 Double-Cabs had been turned into Spectre copies by now.

But if you want to stand out in the crowd, here’s one that’s Spectre sized but even more eyeballgrabbing. And it’s got no shortage of go to match its show, too…

A

couple of years ago, up at the higher end of the Defender market there was a bit of a craze for building 110s mimicking the appearance of the vehicles driven by the bad guys chasing James Bond in the movie Spectre.

These continue to be popular – and as we reported a couple of issues ago, genuine Spectre vehicles now change hands for astronomical sums of money.

But what if a big, mean, black 110 just isn’t eye-catching enough for you?

Cars of Somerset, a dealership which specialises in interesting vehicles and always has a neat line of cool Landies on the go, may have the answer. The ‘Layercake’ Defender, as they call it, is similarly proportioned to those Spectre beasts – but if you’re trying to figure out what caused the global yellow paint shortage, look no further.

Based on a Td5 Double-Cab from the year 2000, the vehicle was built up

using a 2” Terrafirma suspension lift with wide-bore shocks. Between this and a set of arches so wide you can balance a mug of tea on them (in fact, make that a tray), there’s room under there for a set of 37x12.50R17 Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ mud-terrains on 10-spoke steel rims. A Terrafirma RTC steering damper helps keep the vehicle controllable with all that rubber turning on the road.

The result is a 110 that looks imposing from every angle, but it’s especially in-your-face when viewed from the front. This is when you see just how wide those arches really are, for starters – and there’s a squared-off rubber A-bar adding yet more visual drama. Behind it, a grille and headlight surrounds from KBX join the party, and up on top the wings are dressed in black aluminium chequer plate.

It’s remarkable how much you can add to the appearance of a simple bow

shackle just by giving it a coat of red paint, too…

You also won’t fail to have noticed the snorkel taking air to the engine. And if you miss the 52” LED bar alongside the top of it, you certainly won’t when it’s switched on. If you can still see at all, that is. Up top from here, there’s a Bearmach roof rack, and an aerial for the stereo disappears somewhere off into space.

Most of all, however, when viewed from the front (or, feel the fear, in your rear-view mirror), this 110 has a bonnet that’s simply outrageous. It’s a Puma job, but so much more – the power bulge on top is immense, and it has vents cut into it that look like the bared teeth of some marauding predator.

Underneath the bonnet, the vehicle has a bit of go to back up its show, too.

The 110 Double-Cab wasn’t famous for the amount of room in its pick-up bed, but this one manages to squeeze in a stowage chest and body-mounted roll bar as well as an enormous spare wheel. Another area where Defenders aren’t known for their space is in the cabin, but there’s just enough that’s been done here to make it feel special

It can breathe, too, thanks to a Griffin exhaust system which you’d have to say will be able to expel air at least as fast as the mushroom on that snorkel can let it in.

Elsewhere, LED headlamps and sidelights do no harm to the overall image, either, and nor does a steel steering guard. There are more LEDs at the back – enough, in fact, for counting them all to be a bit of a challenge, and whoever built the vehicle had the very good sense to instal a reversing camera on the tailgate.

Not that you need to worry, with 37” tyres to run over almost everything and a NAS-style rear step towbar to bounce off everything else, but one does still want to be civil towards lesser mortals on the road. It’s not like you’re a Spectre villain, after all…

Inside, the cabin hasn’t been overdressed but looks impressive thanks to a pair of Recaro-style leather recliners, a Momo Dark Fighter steering wheel and a Raptor pod on the dash. There’s a lockable cubby box with a kill switch mounted in it, and various LED interior lights and four loudspeakers in the roof lining. The CB is mounted up there, too, and there’s monitor for the reversing camera mounted on the dash top.

In the pick-up bed, the spare wheel is mounted to the back of the cab – and covered by a bungee net, which definitely adds a level of curiosity to it. There’s a big steel stowage chest behind it, and the whole lot is surrounded by a body-mounted roll structure which, in the event of a typical off-road inversion, will have enough about it to keep the cabin intact. A pair of body sliders add their own kind of protection, too, and of course all these parts are painted black to go with the overall colour theme.

The result is a Land Rover which definitely turns heads. Drive this up the street, and you can be sure of attention.

Unlike with some eye-catching vehicles, the attention will be overwhelmingly positive, too. This is a larger than life Defender that’s imposing without being truly menacing and doesn’t take itself as seriously as a Spectre 110.

The other great thing about it is that at £19,950, you don’t need to be on Daniel Craig’s salary to afford this thing. This is borne out by the fact that someone has already bought it – but the company always has an interesting Landy or two in stock, and if this one is anything to go by it’s got to be worth checking out.

I

t’s been many years since the relationship between Land Rovers and TVR engines was first established.

Solihull’s own Power Train Projects department used to use them to spectacular effect in comp safari vehicles, and in the early days of The Landy we featured a P38 Range Rover whose 4.6

had been craned out in favour of the 5.0-litre V8 from a Griffith.

That same engine is at the heart of the 90 you see on these pages. It was built in 2018 by Stuart Birch, of Liverpool-based transmission specialist Birch 4x4, and even today it has only covered 59,000 miles.

When we say it was ‘built,’ it really was. The donor vehicle was a 1985 pre-Defender 90, whose identity is retained (handily allowing it to be covered on classic car insurance). But its current owner, who bought it from Stuart after seeing it out and about in Liverpool, says that nothing of the original remains.

The base for the build was a V8-specific chassis taken from someone else’s project that had been abandoned, and this holds the vehicle up on a set of lowered springs, Bilstein dampers and heavy-duty anti-roll bars. It’s definitely a street machine, this. On the ends of the axles, 285/50R20 Cooper Zeon LTZs are wrapped around a set of Overfinch Olympus alloys with 50mm ally spacers behind them, and through these you can spot the vented discs that go with a full performance braking system.

That’s good because not only is the engine a 5.0-litre TVR V8, it’s a 5.0-litre TVR V8 that’s been modified, tuned and remapped by the renowned Mark Adams at Tornado Systems – a

man who needs no introduction if you know much about the world of off-road racing. Behind the engine, a ZF fourspeed auto turns the wheels via the viscous transfer box from a Range Rover Classic.

All of this is the stuff of a very special Land Rover, but there’s more. Looking

TVR is a great name from the annals of British motoring whose association with Land Rover goes back many years.

The company is long gone, but that association lives on through its thunderous V8 engines – one of which has found a home beneath the bonnet of this unique 90, whose street stance is just the start… at it, you be forgiven for thinking it’s a Puma – and that indeed is exactly what it wants you to do. Late body panels were used throughout, with extended wheelarches to give it more attitude, and the front was dressed up using SVX-style headlamps, headlamp surrounds and front grille.

Kevlar composite wings and a lightweight Puma bonnet add further to the overall image, and the whole lot is finished off in a very modern looking coat of Stornoway metallic grey.

There are other clues to what this 90 has going on, too. A Kahn stainless exhaust with twin tailpipes is none too subtle as clues go, for example, and neither is a ‘powered by TVR’ sticker.

Subtle or not, though, they’re both pretty cool if you like your Defenders street-stanced.

So too is the billet aluminium filler cap. Down below is an aluminium sump guard, while up top you’ll find a genuine Land Rover tubular lightweight roof rack and ladder. So it’s more than just a pretty face – it’s ready to cart stuff around, too.

Naturally, all this attention to detail is continued inside the vehicle. In fact, you could argue that here’s where the fun really starts. There’s a JE Engineering electronic parking brake control to be seen, for example, as well as a dashboard-mounted push button for firing that big V8 into life, and features like air-conditioning, heated seats and a heated windscreen are taken straight from Land Rover’s own XS spec list.

It’s elsewhere, though, that things get really impressive. Most notably, and noticeably, there’s what the owner describes as an ‘Overfinch inspired’ interior featuring full black and oxblood red leather seats with cross-stitch detail. Overfinch carpets and black alcantara head lining continue the notvery-1985-Defender theme, and as well as a 350mm Momo steering wheel the dash is home to an Alpine INE-W925R infotainment and navigation system.

The same company’s subwoofer is located under the centre console, so that however much the driver’s enjoying life, everyone will be able to enjoy it almost as much too.

And enjoy it, he does. He describes it as ‘a stunning and unique example of an iconic vehicle,’ which sounds like the sort of thing you say when you’re selling a car and sure enough he is – it’s in the Classifieds section of this very issue. Only because he’s ordered a new Defender and it’s on its way, though – which is one of the few reasons why a person could be let off for wanting rid of a truck like this. It’s unique, it’s luxurious, it’s spectacular, it’s fun… and it’s a proper 90. What’s not to love?

verlanding has become a lot more difficult since the start of this year. The impact of the pandemic on travel has been profound, with expedition operators mothballing their businesses and solo travellers forced to abandon their vehicles and scramble home on hastily planned repatriation flights.

As the world moves on and looks to a time beyond covid, some of those expedition operators have started to adapt. None more so than the team behind the celebrated Peru Safari – who have looked closer to home to create a range of new tours under the name of Celtic Routes.

Promising a real taste of the wild, these unique itineraries explore the furthest flung corners of the Celtic World – Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Unlike the traditional tag-along green lane tour,

these are app-led routes for clients who hire one of Celtic Routes’ own fully prepped Land Rover Discovery 4s.

Customers pick up their vehicles from the company’s base in Cheshire, just half an hour from either Liverpool or Manchester airport. There’s also the option of starting the adventure at the local Land Rover Experience, based at Peckforton Castle in Cheshire.

The tours are based on the North Coast 500 in Scotland, the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland and the recently launched Snowdonia 360 in Wales.

‘Each is a tremendous way to take in the most rugged and wildest landscapes in Europe and their rich Celtic history,’ says Celtic Routes. ‘We have added to these already superb routes and your 4x4 lets you reach even wilder locations, with some great off-road options. Add to this some truly beautiful

and unique accommodations along the way, and you have a single easy to book adventure package.’

The Irish tour is currently on hold due to covid restrictions, as are others on mainland Europe. However the Scottish and Welsh routes are good to go – with all accommodation in certified venues which have been inspected and handpicked by the Celtic Routes team.

‘Traditionally,’ says the company of what it offers, ‘many of these types of holidays have been offered using your own vehicle, or on a “follow me” camping theme tour with lead guide. We decided to make the experience more rounded, more comfortable… and more weather friendly!’

A lead vehicle is available for hire as an option for customers. However the principal product offering uses an in-car tablet, provided as part of the

Bringing up the Rear

Part 2: Having started to prepare our 90 for its rear crossmember change, the guys in the Britpart workshop continue the job with what’s definitely the fiddliest part – removing the fuel tank and its guard. Fools rush in and no mistake…

S

plitting the story of a ‘simple’ rear crossmember change into three parts does feel a bit over the top. But our 90’s crossmember was well on track to split into a lot more parts than that, so there you are.

As we explained last month, the job was made that bit more awkward by the 90 being a Station Wagon model, and by the fact that it had been modified for off-roading. Obviously, the off-roading itself didn’t help either, as it was responsible for a good amount of the crud and

rust that had turned the crossmember into a piece of scrap in the first place.

Not that even the most cosseted of Defenders is immune to letting go here, of course. So this is a job they will all need sooner or later.

With ours needing it, we paid a visit to Britpart’s in-house workshop for some expert remedial care. The good news was that the rest of the metal is sound, so there was no need to go down the quarter-chassis route – though even then, there was a substantial amount of prep work to be done.

So much so that we split the story halfway through it. In a nutshell, we removed the rear step towbar and drop plate (a much bigger battle than it sounds), dropped off the exhaust, removed the rear seatbelt anchors and emptied all the junk out from the back of the vehicle where it was weighing down on the floor.

This is necessary because there’s precious little room for manoeuvre between the floor and the fuel tank – which you’re going to be removing. That means draining it off, for which it’s good

to have at least a couple of jerries to hand (and that’s if it’s close to empty in the first place), before you start pulling the fuel lines away from the connector block on top of it.

Far and away the biggest headache you can give yourself here is by just yanking the lines off their connectors without taking a note of which one goes where when you come to put them back on. There are various ways and means, but somewhere between when the advent of the Defender and now, someone invented smartphones – and for once,

this is a situation in which one of these will be a useful ally.

The lines are colour coded, if you can see through all the crud (we could on ours, with a bit of effort), so it’s time to get out your camera. You’re going to reach above the tank and take a picture of the block so you know what the connections should look like when it all goes back together.

Once again, we can barely begin to tell you what a painful lack of space there is in which you’re working here.

Undoing the fuel tank and guard is unlikely to be as easy as it would have been if corrosion weren’t a thing. Your main obstacle, however, is likely to be the sheer lack of space you have to work in. Note the packing piece placed between the chassis and body to help allow the guard to pop out from under the crossmember – it doesn’t look like much, but every fraction of an inch is precious here. done this as part of a full stripdown involving the bodywork coming off, because without the floor in the way you’d be able to see and feel your way around much more easily.

As it turned out, even just removing the steel guard beneath the fuel tank was an absolute pig of a job. The notion of simply undoing the bolts then lifting it clear is an appealing one, but having freed off all the hardware (itself a potential nightmare) you can look forward to a battle involving pry bars and a bulging swear box.

The tank itself is likely to want a good bit of wrestling, too. You need to support it on a stand while freeing it off, because you can be sure it will fall some of the way, but after that you can be equally sure it won’t want to simply drop nicely to the ground.

Talking of things that drop to the ground, that’s exactly what the nearside mudflap did while we were out green laning one day – and that’s what alerted us to the fact that the crossmember was starting to rot out. Ironically, while the 90 was being stripped down, the offside mudflap did the opposite and, even once the nuts and bolts had been wound off, needed a pry bar to work it free. You can always expect an old Defender to confound your expectations…

With that, it was apparent just how grotty the crossmember had become.

Time to get the grinder out and fetch it off – which we’ll look at in part three next month.

When LR’s baby grew up

T

he Mk2 Freelander was far better inside than the original, and it was far more reliable – a well looked after one is an excellent prospect on the used market.

Early models had a 2.2 TD4 engine or a 231bhp straight-six petrol. The latter is

incredibly rare, which is just fine. From the 2011 model year, it was all about a new diesel unit, also a 2.2, which could be had in 150 or 190bhp form.

With any of these diesels, if it’s had the right oil changes you should be able to rely on it. And the rest of the vehicle

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available.

Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run.

In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover.

Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example.

These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

is very sound, too – do check that all the electrical systems are working, though, as this is the most likely area in which faults might crop up.

Off-road damage is unlikely, but take a look underneath to see that it’s not been abused. Another way to reassure

The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body.

Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)

£2500-£15,000

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status.

By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale.

Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop…

Pros: A Land Rover like no other, if that’s what you want Cons: Especially brutal to drive, and to find parts

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real

101 (1972-1978)

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when

£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on.

Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

Defender Tdi (1990-1998)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock.

The earlier 200Tdi is simpler and less refined than the 300, which arrived in 1994. But both are superb engines.

Do be aware of whether you’re getting a genuine one, though.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones.

As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis.

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

It has issues, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by mismatched tyres.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures,

£6000-£30,000 Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can still be a DIY machine – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever.

Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax

£400-£5500 but today’s replacements are much more robust. The TD4 diesel is your best bet – but check the condition of the injectors first.

A very early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good

condition. An awful lot have been neglected and/or abused – but if you’ve got the skills, a resto would be the ultimate hobby that pays.

Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to own, even today. The problem is that they’ere very complex and very, very good at going wrong.

Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go.

Electronics are laughably flaky.

And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills.

Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust Cons: Electrics. Be very afraid

Range Rover L322 (2002-12)

The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-

liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown.

The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class.

The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road.

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here.

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it.

All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks...

The original Discovery was based on the Defender of the time, but

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality.

The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

with a 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined to drive, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine.

Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays.

Lower body rust is a big killer, too.

So it’s rare to find a good one now,

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)

The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road

and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area.

The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always

110 Fire Engine – still in service!

ALONGSIDE THE Carmichael Range Rover, HCB Angus IIB Fireflies and so on, later Land Rover fire appliances don’t tend to get the attention they deserve. This 1985 110 might deserve more than most, however – because while it’s already a classic, it’s also still able to serve its original purpose.

Fitted with a naturally aspirated 2.5 diesel engine, which the seller says starts every time without fail, the 110 runs a five-speed manual box and the correct full-time transfer case. Following its life with the fire service, it was semi-retired to standby duties as a rescue vehicle on an aerodrome in West Kent – meaning it has been maintained in full working order rather than being allowed to turn in to a show vehicle.

Thus the Land Rover is equipped with all its original blue lights still fitted, as well as its sirens and a PA loudspeaker. Its on-board water tank is still fitted, supplying a fire hose that still works perfectly. The pump is mounted on a slide-out tray, there are ladders located on the roof and firefighting equipment is stowed on lockers behind shutters on both sides of the rear body.

Down below, the chassis is in remarkable condition for a Land Rover with 142,000 miles under its wheels. The seller says it has always been kept coated with wax, and that the vehicle’s condition is generally excellent inside and out – something you can see for yourself by looking around it. It’s borne out by the MOT, too – the vehicle’s last ticket was awarded in July 2020 (meaning the owner didn’t feel the need to take advantage of the six-month Covid extension in place at the time), and this came with no advisories.

It’s possibly more likely that at this age, the 110’s next move will be into someone’s collection. It’s a ready-made classic, for sure, both now and into the future – though for an organisation in need of a 4x4 fire truck, it could still do a sterling job of work. Either, way, you’ll find it advertised opposite.
