No, you didn’t hear that on the campaign trail. It, however, is the odds-on coming reality. In fact, here’s how the Wall Street Journal (no bastion of economic liberalism) characterized this new reality in the opening paragraph of a Nov. 14 front page story: “The presidency of Donald Trump is poised to usher in a new era for the U.S. economy that forecasters say could boost economic growth, bring higher interest rates and inflation, and a new set of potential risks including international trade wars.”

It’s very doubtful that any of the 61,166,063 Americans who voted for Donald Trump also voted for “higher interest rates and inflation.” It’s equally doubtful that anyone voted for “international trade wars.” (“Wars,” as in more than one, according to the Journal.)

And yet, here we are — “we” as in rural America because we’re the ones experts agree gave Donald Trump the unforeseen victory. Here we are staring at exactly what no farmer, rancher, or American needs: higher interest rates, more inflation, and multiple trade wars.

Even worse, while that sky is falling on rural America, it’s a very safe bet that Mexico won’t be paying for a wall and Hillary won’t be in prison.

An even safer bet is that Donald will still be Tweeting.

CSP applications now available Starting in November, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will accept and process applications for enrollment in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP). Applications will be made available in local service centers.

NRCS has made several updates to the program to help producers better evaluate their conservation options and the benefits to their operations and natural resources.

NRCS offices began processing applications for the program on Nov. 14, with sign-up running through Feb. 3, 2017. Through CSP, agricultural producers and forest landowners earn payments for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation activities like cover crops, ecologically-based pest management, buffer strips, and pollinator and beneficial insect habitat — all while maintaining active agriculture production on their land.

Producers interested in the program should visit their local USDA Service Center to submit an application.

terhorn, and I thought that if I heard yodeling or spotted the Von Trapp family over the next hill, I was going to need some of that paper on a roll that I referred to earlier.

My husband asked me to top off a truck one day, which I did. I overloaded it by 8,000 pounds according to the scale at the elevator. I guess farm wives can add elevator scales to the list of scales that rat us out and laugh at us secretly.

A high school guy working for us said incredulously, “That’s impressive.”

My husband had another word for it.

The good news is that after my experience this fall, I won’t have to do toning exercises on my left thigh for months after all that standing on the clutch while loading the trucks.

Fourth grade was a long time ago.

My eyes were spinning like those of long-ago cartoon characters that had just been coldcocked. I couldn’t find it on the “Mission Control” panel in the tractor and I couldn’t find it via my husband’s instructions on the radio, so another guy stepped in and found it for me.

If my husband would have told me it looks like the TV pictures of shingles that people get, I would have spotted it right away.

One of the corn fields we got into was hilly. And I mean hilly.

I went over the first big hill with the tractor and grain cart and felt like I was scaling the first climb of a roller coaster. The sign at the top of the coaster at Arnolds Park says, “The Point of No Return.” I saw that sign in my mind as I neared the summit and prayed there was land on the other side. I felt a little like the great explorers must have felt — Christopher Columbus and Yukon Cornelius.

“Things are starting to finally wrap up.” The Land spoke with Joan Lee on Nov. 17 as she expressed relieft that there is only 7 or 8 acres left of corn ground to plow. Her husband, Mark, should be done with those acres by the end of the day. The completion of field work for Lee comes just in time: “We’re in a watch starting at midnight.” Three to 6 inches of snow is expected along with “really strong winds,” she reported. While Lee isn’t thrilled for the white stuff, Lee’s snowmobile-loving husband is “cheering for snow.”

Though Lee and her husband may not be in agreement about their joy or lack thereof over the upcoming snow storm, they are both excited for their travel adventure this winter. Lee and Mark will be going to Israel. It will be a 30th anniversary present to each other. The highlight of the trip will be the “opportunity to be baptized in the Jordan River.” This “is going to be a wonderful trip,” Lee said.

After Israel, thoughts turn to spring and planting. “The land that we run is going to be changing next year.” Lee won’t be renting 80 acres of organic ground. Next year, she said, “If we still go with the silage, we definitely know what corn we’ll be planting.” The silage-specific corn was a “good producing corn.”

Looking back at this year, there’s been some highs and lows when it comes to farming for Lee. A high point was: “We were able to help our friend battling cancer,” she said. Helping someone else in the field wouldn’t have been possible when Lee was still milking cows; but since the farm has transitioned into a cropsonly operation, it has allowed for more flexibility and time. A negative this year was the large amount of breakdowns. “The repairs were a challenge,” she said. After the last repair on the chopper, “It was definitely working better.” So while repairs slowed Lee down this year, those repairs may help the farming operation run more smoothly in the future since many of the issues have been remedied. The harvest, “I think it was pretty good,” she said. Lee said the “yields for the most part weren’t bad.” Bottom line: “We survived.”

Corn harvest is complete and “for the most part the corn was above average.” The Land spoke with Andy Pulk on Nov. 17 as he was happy to be done with harvest and pleased with the good yields he saw. He wasn’t always sure that those kinds of yields would be the end result this harvest after months of rain. “It definitely was my wettest year up here. Spring went really well, but when the rain started it didn’t stop.”

The last two weeks have been the nicest of the year for Pulk as he was able to get almost caught up with tillage and “by tomorrow evening we’ll be pretty much wrapped up.” The pleasant weather also allowed Pulk to get in a little deer hunting time which resulted in getting “a pretty nice eight-pointer.” Pulk said, “If we pushed a little harder during deer season we’d be done.” Sometimes taking a break to take part in the hunt is much needed.

Overall, the corn did well even in the wet conditions. Wheat, soybeans and rye grass faired as expected.

With the corn, Pulk said he was “pleasantly surprised to see the potential in the varieties.” He observed that the corn “genetics have gotten much better since 2009.” This has Pulk excited for the future of corn on his farm. “It has phenomenal potential,” he said.

Looking ahead to next spring, Pulk said he is “not going to grow nearly as much wheat.” He expects to plant “one-third of the wheat that we’ve done in the past.” With the current prices, Pulk said it’s “not worth putting time and investment into growing wheat.” He will be upping corn and bean acres and leaving the number of rye grass acres the same.

This year offered challenges due to wet conditions all summer and most of fall. When a window of dry weather opened up, Pulk was in the combine as fast as he could to get the most crops out of the field before the rain returned. Pulk can’t say it’s a great year. “But, it is better than last year,” he reported.

He said he is hopeful that there will be higher prices and drier weather next year. Only time will tell if both those things are in the cards for the Pulk farm in 2017.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa November 10

“I’d say we’re 95 percent done with corn.” The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Nov. 10 as he was thrilled with the mild temperatures this fall and the amount of combining and additional field work that was getting done. As for the corn, “overall what’s left standing is pretty good.” The corn dried down well.

With harvest almost wrapped up, Moser was “surprised with the yields.” He was also “surprised that the beans never dried out really fast, it took a while to dry out.” Another surprise was that this year’s corn hybrids responded favorably even with the heat and growing conditions. They “took the stress well.”

Moser also noted that “really good dirt paid off.”

Looking ahead to the 2017 planting and growing season: “A big thing for me is going to be nitrogen application, spoon feeding your crop more.” Moser said, “We’re seeing good response in a field in splitting nitrogen application.” Along with “treating each individual field,” Moser will be quicker to spray fungicide on beans and corn to improve overall plant health.It’s vital to “watch inputs, watch what you put out there.”

While the yields were good this year, the prices could definitely use a boost.

Moser’s “hoping we get some demand going forward.” The bottom line for this year, next year and beyond is that “You got be optimistic if you want to farm.”

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

November 10 Two more days and corn harvest will be complete for John Nielsen.

The Land spoke with Nielsen on Nov. 10 as he reported that harvest is “really going good now.” There are only 200 acres left to combine and with dry, warm weather forecasted, the end of harvest is in sight.

As for how the corn crop this year compares to other years, “The corn is pretty darn good.” So good, in fact that it’s “probably the best crop I’ve ever had in my whole life.” That’s surprising considering the wet planting conditions Nielsen faced this year, the frost early in the growing season, the hail and storms this summer. Even with all those obstacles, the crops this year have been phenomenal. Nielsen attributes some of that to corn that was sprayed with fungicide which resulted in the yields being 20 to 30 bushels better than corn that wasn’t sprayed.

Nielsen believes that you really can’t cut back on the things that make the big yields. Doing the extras this year may have made all the difference in giving Nielsen high yielding corn and beans. As for what he might change for next year’s crops, “I’m not going to change a lot.” With only days left in the field, Nielsen is enjoying every minute of it, he said, “We’re having a lot of fun with good weather and crops.”

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent MINNEAPOLIS — Jim Tjepkema, formerly of Clarks Grove, Minn., saves seeds from about 80 different vegetables.

“I only raise 25 to 30 each year,“ Tjepkema, who now lives and gardens in South Minneapolis, said.

Tjepkema, who is a member of the Iowa-based Seed Savers Exchange, said the secret to raising only about one-third of his vegetable varieties each gardening season can be found in good seed care and storage.

“I’ve had tomato seeds that I’ve kept for maybe six years and then grown them and the seed was fine,” he said.

For years, Tjepkema has been saving the seeds of a number of tomato varieties, including three that he found in Minnesota.

“The three that I collected in Minnesota are Anton, Jake's, and Milka,” he said. “Jake's is a tomato my uncle Jake saved that came from a neighbor of his. Anton came from a man who lived in a rural home near Twin Lakes, Minn. Milka is a Serbian variety from a woman named Milka who came here from Serbia.”

Tjepkema describes Jake’s tomato as a very large pink beefsteak-type tomato that matures in 75 to 85 days. It grows large vines with big potato-leaf-

Seed savers exchange knowledge SEED SAVER, from pg. 9 “What I do is inventory my seed collection and check on the last time that I raised them,” he said. “I put the ones that haven’t been raised recently on a list of the ones to grow.”

This year he grew Milka.

“I like to plant as many plants as I can, but tomatoes take a lot of space,” Tjepkema said. “But I plant at least three plants. You can have crossing of tomatoes and planting more than one of each kind increases my chance of seeing it if that occurs.”

At harvest time, Tjepkema picked four nice ripe tomatoes for seed. He says it’s best to collect seeds from more than one fruit.

Saving tomato seeds from year to year can be as simple as squeezing the juice and seeds out, separating the seeds from the pulp, and then drying them on paper. But if you want to save the seeds for years without planting them, like Tjepkema does, you may have better luck with a more involved system.

“Some seed savers let tomatoes ferment in their own juice for a while,” Tjepkema said. “They have a gelatinous coat around them and fermentation dissolves that. You can squeeze out the pulp and seeds into a container and let it sit for three or four days until they get good and rotten. Then just screen out the seeds and throw away the pulp.”

He admits that fermenting tomatoes are stinky, so he advises doing it in a place where the smell won’t bother family members.

“Set it outside with an insect barrier cloth so it doesn’t get fruit flies. There will be a layer of white foam on the top of the liquid. It will take about four days,” he said. “If you wait longer the seeds may sprout.”

The tomato seeds will sink to the bottom of the fermented juice.

“Carefully pour some of the juice off and then add some water,” Tjepkema said. “Add and pour off water several times to rinse them. For a final rinse, put them in a kitchen strainer. To dry them, I get as much of the water as I can off them in the strainer and then I spread them out on a paper plate. They will dry out on that within a day.”

Since Tjepkema wants his seeds to last as long as possible, he takes extra precautions to keep tomato and other seeds dry. He uses a system established by Jeff McCormack, who is founder of Southern Exposure Seeds and a founding member of the Seed Savers Exchange board of directors. He uses silica gel, the stuff that’s found in many jars of vitamin supplements, to get the last tiny bit of moisture from his seeds.

“Next, I put the seeds in a jar containing silica gel for a week,” he said. “Jeff McCormack located some silica gel that changes color. When it can absorb moisture it’s one color, but when it can’t it changes to another color. Then you know it’s not good any more.”

“He also located some vials that are used in laboratories,” Tjepkema said. “They have very tight lids.

Once you get the seeds dry, you seal them in the plastic vials and store them in the refrigerator. The

He acknowledges that his seed saving method may be more elaborate than most backyard gardeners care to do.

“You could just put dry seeds in a canning jar and screw the lid down tight,” he said.

Tjepkema advises using a canning jar of a size that is just adequate to contain your seeds. Small quantities of seed in large jars can take on moisture from the air in the jar, he said.

Seed saving supplies can be purchased from the Seed Savers Exchange and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

Tomatoes are a good plant for the beginning seed saver to start with. So are beans. Tjepkema saves seed from 16 different bean varieties. He also saves seed from lettuce, onion, spinach, peppers, radish, and a number of other vegetables including something called orach.

“I just love saving all kinds of seeds,” he said.

“Whenever I run across one that is of interest I add it to my collection; although I’m just about done with adding to my collection. I can’t maintain any more varieties.”

Exchanging seed An important and pleasurable part of seed saving is exchanging the seeds with other people. Some of that pleasure is in the knowledge that you are part of an effort to keep a particular vegetable variety in existence even if commercial seed companies don’t recognize its commercial value.

“I got some of my lettuce varieties from other SSE seed savers,” Tjepkema said. “One guy had one and he said the neighbor that he got it from was German so he called the variety German. It sounded nice so I tried it. It turned out really nice. A lettuce specialist that I know said that it was one of the best lettuces around.”

He also enjoys the social interaction with other seed savers.

“I’ve learned an awful lot talking to other seed savers and gardeners,” he said. “A lot of knowledge about seed saving and gardening isn’t in books. It’s in peoples heads.”

Sugar beet growers are becoming familiar with the ROPA Tiger, a huge beet harvesting machine still somewhat new to the Minnesota sugar beet industry. Designed and manufactured in Germany, this six-wheel, self-propelled behemouth slices beet tops, lifts the beets, gently shakes off clinging soil, and transfers beets into a whirring cylinder which removes even more dirt before beets are shuttled to a 28-ton hopper.

Empty weight of a ROPA Tiger is 60,000 pounds.

But with a full hopper, gross weight about doubles.

Soil protection is provided with a triple-axle suspension carried by huge Michelin 800/70 R38 Ultraflex tires on the front axle and 1000/55 R32 tires for the two rear axles. Also, the six-wheel steering mechanism articulates so the machine can “dog track” across the field.

“Each tire makes its own footprint and that considerably reduces soil compaction. This fall was a good proving ground for this suspension system,” said Ace Ag owner Alex Everson.

A 626-horsepower Mercedes Benz diesel engine powers this brute. Price tag is about $700,000.

“We are the parts and service support system for ROPA. We are the only outfit in Minnesota providing this service,” said Everson, noting there is also a ROPA repair and service center in Michigan and a dealer in Nebraska.

The ROPA beet harvester dominates the sugar beet industry of Germany and France. First entry into the United States was in Michigan. Everson said there are now 40 of these machines in Michigan; five so far in Minnesota; with three utilized by Renville County producers. The other two are demo machines, including an 8-row, 22-inch unit for Ace Ag. Ace Ag leases the ROPA Tiger beet harvesting machine to growers.

This self-propelled monster saves in additional equipment, tractor, manpower and fuel. Keeping trucks out of the field may be the biggest favor thinks Everson. “Pair a ROPA with a proper cart and your trucks don’t see the field,” he said. “These 80,000-pound semis running adjacent to your beet lifter aren’t doing your soils any favor.”

“Delivering a clean beet is always a challenge.

Because of wetter fields this year, clean beets were more an issue with our ROPA unit.”

Another reality to McNamara and other big acreage beet growers is sheer capacity of the ROPA harvester.

“This is an 8-row unit,” said McNamara. “We need 12-row machines to meet our harvesting schedules.

Engineering, design and durability is great, but direct delivery without additional rescreening out of the field is an issue.”

McNamara maintains that the harvest environment is more critical with the ROPA system.

“With the conventional system, defoliating first helps field drying and yields a cleaner beet. However, with the single pass ROPA harvester, dryer fields are even more essential,” he said.

In Michigan’s lighter soils, and more so in Europe, the beet harvest generally includes field piling at the edge of the field and transport trucks later deliver to the processing plant. That wider window

from field to processing plant is a definite advantage favoring the ROPA system, said McNamara.

“With us, harvest to processing plant in a one-step operation doesn’t always meet the tolerance requirements of our Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative. If we could field pile, then reload to factory at a later schedule, the ROPA harvester with field carts might ramp up our efficiencies by 35 to 40 percent.

Plus, we’d be reloading our own dirt back onto our own fields. But that increases the unpredictability of harvest on any given day,” he said.

A faster harvest may be a benefit also.

“We could travel a little bit faster with the ROPA,” Erickson went on to say. “We use 12-row harvesters however, so you don’t get as much done with this 8row unit. But I think soil compaction is less with the ROPA because of its big tires and unique tracking.

However, I think we’d need two beet carts because we’re dumping directly into our trucks which make a quick trip to the piling site. We don’t field dump and pick up later like they do in Europe.”

A 12-row header is likely for the American market.

The owner and chief engineer of ROPA visited Minnesota in mid-October suggesting a 12-row unit may become a reality.

“We’ve got to work our way through the numbers — plus the pros and cons; then put a pencil to the data before we make a decision on putting a ROPA into your program,” said Erickson.

He and his brother grow roughly 1,500 acres of sugar beets.

Sugar beet harvest is an extremely complicated process. Fitting harvest schedules to delivery schedules and trucking allocations while doing battle with the frequent delivery of non-allocated rain showers is indeed a many-splendored challenge. ❖

Less dirt into the transport trucks is part of the ROPA sales pitch.

“I was surprised,” Everson admitted.

“We heard reports of a cleaner harvest with a ROPA harvester. I recall a big inch and a half of rain on a Sunday. We lifted beets the next Monday afternoon and they came out really clean.”

Everson is excited about his new business venture with ROPA. “I’m glad we got in at ground level because there’s a fair amount to learn with parts and repair techniques. I’m glad they didn’t call when we had 15 machines in the area and they said, ‘Hey, do you want to do this now?’”

One benefit for technicians is that the operator’s manual is built right into the computer, but you also get a printed copy.

“Just being able to access it right there on the monitor in the cab is super handy. And you don’t need to buy any diagnostic tools to hook up to the ROPA. Everything is done on board,” he said.

Everson is an Atwater, Minn., native, schooled at North Dakota State University in the John Deere ag tech program. A large building adjacent to the big co-op elevator in Murdock caught his eye. The 80-by-100-foot structure has big doors and ceilings high enough to handle big equipment. Everson employs three additional technicians (Andy Voorhees, Dustin Voorhees, Kerry Hettver). Zach Caskey heads up the parts department and keeps paperwork flowing in the proper direction.

Weather made this a challenging season for Ace Ag Service. But Everson compliments his farm customers.

“Agriculture is mostly a rewarding business because we’re dealing with genuine people,” said Everson. ❖

And he has ties to Europe as Ace Ag services and leases the German-made ROPA Tiger beet harvesting machine.

Everson pays tribute to the design and engineering skills of German manufacturers.

“Germans are very good at building things,” he said. “Their electronic skills are superior. Start up the machine and the computers turn on and everything seems to work perfectly right off the bat.

“There are a large number of buttons in the cab. Most of those, however, just pertain to setting up the machine.

Once you are operating, it’s pretty simple; just a few buttons and memory presets which let you accommodate different conditions within the field.

“You’ll do some adjustments with the shoe speed of the shakers, the height of the roller bed and a few more things.

But once made, it’s a very simple machine to run,” said Everson.

There’s a hefty price tag on these machines — in the $700,000 range.

Warranty provisions pertaining to hydraulic systems, engines, bearings and certain wear items are included.

“Having a local company such as us available for parts and servicing made a difference,” said Everson. “It just got people a little more excited about the ROPA. It’s pretty tough to have your expensive beet lifter broke down and nobody around to service it. As we all know, down time is really bad time in this sugar beet business.”

While non-genetically modified organism seed is a tiny sliver of American agriculture, owner and manager Mac Ehrhardt said they are focusing on the core of their business, which also happens to be the company’s fastest growing segment.

“Our goal is to be a trusted supplier of conventional, non-GMO corn and soybean seed,” said Ehrhardt.

By simplifying its Viking brand, Albert Lea Seed is focusing on what they know best which is developing, testing and supplying non-traited and organic seed. Viking seed is sold

“This isn’t a value judgement. We aren’t saying GMO seeds are bad,” explained Ehrhardt.

A broad range of GMO varieties will be available from NorthStar Genetics, an independent farm seed company based in Minnesota. The seeds will just be in a different bag. As always, Albert Lea Seed will be offering trait and genetic combinations for Minnesota and northern Iowa.

“It’s OK that there are parallel streams of agriculture. We need to accept that people are going to choose to farm in different ways or choose to buy different food,” Ehrhardt said.

“We’re pro-farmer. We appreciate all the hard work that farmers do to feed our country and the world.”

Albert Lea Seed is also known for small grain, alfalfa, pasture, cover crops and Conservation Reserve Program planting mixes, along with its organic seed business.

In the seed plant, workers clean and bag soybean, oats, wheat, barley, hairy vetch, winter rye, peas, buckwheat and triticale. To clean the seeds, they use an ancient process called winnowing that uses blowing air and screens to sift out impurities.

Producers can purchase seed in tote bags that weigh a ton and pro boxes that hold 40-50 bushels. While some farmers buy in bulk by the semi load, others throw the bags into their pickup truck.

Conventional seed Since 2010, Viking’s growth in conventional non-GMO corn sales has

been 300 percent and more than 75 percent of its corn sales in 2016 were either conventional non-GMO or organic.

“It’s hard to make a living farming right now. Farmers are looking for ways to cut costs. Conventional corn is less expensive and it’s another way for them to reduce input costs,” said Ehrhardt.

Ehrhardt understands that farmers are business people who will look at each system — GMO and conventional — and do the math to see which is better for their bottom line. Even though pesticide applications may be necessary, many farmers find they can make more money growing conventional seed.

For instance, Ed Iverson, who farms near Lamberton, has bought Viking seed since 1999. For a year or two, Iverson used Bt-corn, but since then he’s used all conventional corn.

“We’ve kind of felt like it’s done better in our personal trials — stands better and more top-end. The price is also a big factor,” said Iverson.

Producers are contracted to grow conventional soybean seed and small grains, but the conventional corn is purchased from other companies that specialize in growing corn seed. For instance, Anderson Seed in St. Peter is one of its major suppliers.

“Technology when it’s appropriately used can be beneficial for the environment,” Ehrhardt said.

Albert Lea Seed is also known for milling and supplying small grain seeds — oats, barley, wheat and rye to name a few.

Albert Lea Seed is working with the Practical Farmers of Iowa, University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and grain millers to encourage farmers to add small grains to the corn and soybean rotation. Small grains are proven to reduce pest and disease pressure, lower chemical use, increase yields and improve soil and water quality.

The problem, said Mac Ehrhardt, is economics; Producers can’t make money growing oats and barley. The dynamics need to change and the solution is to make small grains part of animal feed — about 10 percent is all it would take. Sustainability efforts from large companies such as Wal-Mart, Unilever and Cargill will help make this happen, predicted Ehrhardt.

“You change the landscape in the upper Midwest in a really significant way, such as that it improves water quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reduces pesticide uses, and allows these large companies to meet their sustainability goals,” said Ehrhardt. “Small grains do all those things. It isn’t magic. It’s stuff we’ve known for 150 years,” Practical Farmers of Iowa is in its third year of a pilot program to encourage traditional corn and bean farmers to add oats to their rotation and find ways to use the oats in animal feed.

When Yokiel transitioned to organic, the Ehrhardts asked him to raise organic seed oats and then in the 1990s, he began growing organic soybean seed.

“I enjoy doing business with them,” said Yokiel.

“They’ve got a lot of integrity.”

Yokiel has also been growing organic corn for years and he explained that getting pure corn seed without GMO contamination has been a challenge.

“They’ve come up with a plan to grow it in a place where they have as little GMO contamination as possible,” Yokiel said.

Viking’s non-GMO purity levels are available in organic seed corn. “I buy the majority of my seed from them and I want to support them to provide organic farmers with good clean seed,” said Yokiel.

Sales of organic food topped $40 billion in 2015, and foods labeled as non-GMO have gone from $12.9 billion in 2012 to $21.2 billion as of April 2016, according to Nielsen. As a result, some farmers are moving toward organic or non-GMO seed due to premium prices.

Ehrhardt explained that for the vast majority of farmers, the first level of purity is sufficient. These hybrids tend to offer good yields, stands and resistance to Northern corn leaf blight. Most of this corn goes to ethanol or feed plants. A few farmers will need higher levels of purity to meet contract terms.

Another issue that led to the rise of conventional seed is that several important weeds are glyphosate resistant. Farmers are asking why they should pay $60 more per bag for a trait when the herbicide doesn’t work as well. The same goes for some rootworm Bt traits so some growers are using Bt corn with an insecticide.

“Mother Nature has figured out a way around those Bt traits,” said Ehrhardt. “Now there are rootworm populations in Minnesota and Iowa that are able to eat corn that contains that Bt trait.”

Milk demand eases as cheese pipeline gets filled signs of the holiday pipelines getting filled.”

Western contacts say a lot of milk is going into cheese. “Production is active and seasonal retail sales are strong. Manufacturers report good demand for branded cheese. Buyers are placing regular orders for fresh commodity blocks. Some manufacturers report inventories for fresh blocks are low or highly committed through the end of the year. ... Cheese inventories are still long for barrels and a few processors are carrying heavier amounts of cheese in their aging programs,” Dairy Market News said.

with year-to-date running 5.0 percent above a year ago and making up 28.7 percent of total fluid sales. Skim milk sales were down 11.2 percent from a year ago and down 11.0 percent yearto-date.

Total packaged fluid milk sales for the eight months of 2016 totaled 36.5 billion pounds, down 0.5 percent from the same period a year ago. Year-todate sales of conventional products, at 34.6 billion pounds, were off 0.8 percent. Organic products, at 1.9 billion pounds, were up 5.5 percent. Organic represented about 5.3 percent of total fluid milk sales so far in 2016.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Nov. 18.

CORN — Corn started out the week on the defensive, then spent the balance of the week working its way higher out of the recent range. In general, there was little fresh market moving news. Growers rushed to finish harvest in the upper Midwest before the first winter storm of the season moved in. Elevators covered piles or worked to pick them up. With attentions focused elsewhere, cash grain movement was relatively slow.

Basis levels were steady to better as a result.

In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election, the dollar has continued to rise.

Keep an eye on how this could affect our corn exports to Mexico — our biggest customer. The Mexican peso has been declining vs. the dollar and their purchases have evaporated. The peso has fallen 10 percent vs. the dollar since the election.

Comments from Federal Reserve Chairwoman Yellen to the Congressional Joint Economic Committee during the week hinted that an interest rate hike would come “relatively soon.” Reactively, any commodity price strength was limited. The strength of the U.S. dollar makes our commodities more expensive to a foreign buyer.

The livestock markets seem to be mired in a stagnant price pattern as of late. Both the cattle and hog markets continue to be entrenched in a long-term bear market which has continued for several months.

Each has stabilized to some degree in the past few weeks, but neither has changed the overall pattern which is still a negative price pattern.

The cattle market has been attempting to form a bottom during the past several weeks. However, each time the market has climbed to the $105-$106 area, the market has encountered resistance.

This has been reflected at the consumer level as beef is overpriced to the rest of the meat complex. This has continued to show up in the volume in the boxed beef trade which is very slow when compared to years past. So far, when the beef cutout reaches into the mid-$180s hundredweight, the volume decreases appreciably and prices fall back.

Another factor which continues to plague the cattle market is the fact that meat in cold storage remains high and this supply is greater than current demand.

Eventually, meat production in all sectors will begin to decline and this will help alleviate any supply problems which may exist today. Producers should be leery of market rallies until the market can break through the resistance areas.

Ample supplies and a stronger dollar led to relatively low prices for the 2015-16 year, meaning soybeans were not the most profitable choice for producers when deciding which crop to plant for 2016.

During the course of the 2016 marketing year, low prices helped out demand for U.S. exports and dryness in South America rebounded prices to nearly $10 per bushel again. Is it realistic to expect soybean prices to be in the $13 to $15 range anytime soon? In the face of larger supplies and increased planting prospects, soybean prices will be hard-pressed to continue their rally past $10 per bushel. South American weather seems to be cooperating early in the growing season. The U.S. Department of Agriculture raised its November estimate for U.S. production to average 52.5 bushels per acre, and increased the carryout up to 480 million bushels. These numbers exceeded most analysts’ predictions.

U.S. growers are also planning their cropping decisions for 2017 and with the recent profits for many soybean growers, low input cost, and room in the

For 2017, multi-peril crop insurance at 85 percent levels for soybeans in areas where it is affordable will help the forward contracting decision on a higher percentage of the crop. It’s good to keep in mind that there are private crop insurance products available to supplement multi-peril insurance including Harvest Max, Rev Net, Price Flex and Hail and Wind coverage. Thinking about crop insurance as a strategy, rather than as a cost of doing business, can give growers an opportunity to maximize the guaranteed amount of income brought back to the farm. The fundamental story can change quickly during the marketing year, and don’t let beans in the 10s pass you by.

However, the futures market has been in a rally mode to try and close the gap in the discount between cash and futures. The decline in the cash trade appears to be slowing its descent since the pork cutout has remained fairly stable in recent weeks. Packer margins are very good and this has increased the interest by the packer to accumulate live inventory.

Currently, hog numbers are still more than the current demand. However, as the hog numbers decline as producers slow replacing numbers, this should result in improving prices for hogs. However, this is ahead of the current situation and the influx of pork into cold storage must begin to decline for this scenario to work. Until the cash price for hogs turns the corner and prices paid by the packer improve, the market is likely to remain in a quagmire for the time being.

Therefore, producers should remain patient and continue to remain current in marketing and protect inventories when available. ❖

Remember, exports account for 50 percent of our total soybean demand. Meal demand has been extremely impressive. Weekly meal sales were the sixth highest ever at 427,000 metric tons and the best of the marketing year.

Brazil’s soybean planting was expected to be 75 percent complete by Nov. 18. There hasn’t been any weather threat and in fact, more new crop soybeans are expected to be available earlier than normal this year. Argentina has had a few spots that experienced too much rain, but the current outlook looks fine for planting and early development.

The October NOPA Crush was better than anticipated at 164.6 million bushels. This is a record for the month of October and the third-biggest for any month. Soyoil stocks dropped 33 million pounds from the previous month to 1.343 billion pounds vs.

1.323 billion pounds estimated. Basis levels were mostly better this week as harvest wraps up and processors needed to keep the pipeline fed.

OUTLOOK: January soybeans have $9.91.75 as resistance and $9.75 as short term support. Longer term support is closer to the $9.50 area. If China gets nervous about possible President-elect Trump’s campaign talk about taxing Chinese imports, it could mean a rollover in soybean prices. China has stated they would retaliate in kind if import taxes are implemented. South America weather is at present generally non-threatening. Assuming normal weather for their crop development and the U.S. dollar stays strong, it does not bode well for a sustained rally in soybeans. The strong U.S. dollar will also continue to weigh on any upside potential.

Fundamentals remain bearish, but the market has not fully embraced those factors, in my opinion. ❖

However, money can run the show when it wants, despite fundamentals to the contrary. For the week, December corn rallied 5.25 cents to $3.45.5, July was 3.25 cents higher at $3.67.25 and the December 2017 contract managed to gain 2.5 cents to $3.82 per bushel.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans tested the 62 percent retracement level from the September low to the October high to jump-start the week. Fear that the Chinese government will continue to take measures to discourage market speculation and a sharp drop in the palm oil market (down 91 ringgits for the week), pushed prices lower, testing support, before recovering. China’s soybeans were down 89 cents for the week. The balance of the week saw prices edge higher, but they were unable to break out of the “Golden Box” that frames the 38 percent ($9.96.5) and 62 percent ($9.75) retracement levels.

Weekly exports were in the middle of the trade estimates at 52.1 million bushels. Total export commitments are 1.4 billion bushels or 68 percent of the USDA’s 2.050 billion bushel forecast. Here’s what could be the fly in the ointment for soybean exports: China has already been purchasing soybeans from Brazil for the December/January time frame. The weakness of the Brazilian real is a contributor to this situation as well as rapid bean planting in Brazil which likely means beans may be available earlier than normal. The Brazil real is down 7 percent vs. the dollar since the U.S. elections. Did we underestimate Brazil’s bean crop last year? In either case, early new crop beans or more old crop bushels left, it could mean we will have an uphill battle to reach the USDA’s record export outlook. While we did see 775,500 metric tons of new sales to China announced this week and 258,000 metric tons to unknown, will all of these sales actually be shipped

Corn is beginning to be pulled from the western Corn Belt to the eastern Corn Belt by rail. Quality concerns in the east and slow farmer sales, combined with competitive transportation rates, have made the arbitrage work. How long this window remains open is yet to be seen, but for now it works for some.

Basis levels have been steady to slightly higher this week, especially at ethanol facilities.

Argentina’s corn planting was estimated at 40 percent complete by the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange on Nov. 18. This compares to 37 percent compete last year. Recent weather forecasts look good for further progress and development.

OUTLOOK: December corn has been boxed in between $3.35.25 and $3.59.25 per bushel since Oct. 3. In a tighter frame, the $3.43.25 10-day moving average was taken out this week, leaving $3.47/$3.55 as the next resistance levels. The 50 percent retracement of the September low to October high at $3.37 acts as support. The next support beneath $3.37 is the 62 percent retracement level at $3.31.75 per bushel. Basis levels have been steady to firm as bin doors close and processors need to keep the pipeline open. Fundamentals are bearish and a strong U.S. dollar should weigh on rally attempts.

Key policy decisions will impact ag in the Trump era The highly-contentious 2016 election is now history, and we will now move forward with the new Trump administration, as well with new leadership at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other key federal agencies. There are many major issues that could potentially affect the agriculture industry, which still need to FARM PROGRAMS be addressed and resolved by

The leadership of key congressional committees, such as the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, should remain quite similar with the last session of Congress, since both the U.S. House and Senate will continue with a Republican majority.

However, there may be some changes in the membership of the committees.

Following is some perspective on some of the key ag policy issues that could be under consideration during the next session of Congress; or by policy initiatives from the Trump administration: The next Farm Bill — The current Farm Bill expires after the 2018 crop year, so early development of the next Farm Bill is likely to start occurring in Congress and with agricultural leaders during the next year. As usual, the budget allocation toward the next Farm Bill will be a big part of that discussion, with some members of Congress already calling for budget cuts when the next Farm Bill is written.

One of the key ag policy discussions will include whether or not the county revenue-based Ag Risk Coverage (ARC-CO) farm program option should be continued in the next Farm Bill. The ARC-CO pro-

gram has been difficult for producers to understand, and there have been wide variations in payment levels from county to county for the same crop. Other key Farm Bill considerations will include expanding the Conservation Reserve Program acreage and funding for other conservation programs, restructuring the Dairy Margin Protection Program, and funding for ag research.

Spending on food and nutrition programs accounts for almost three-fourths of the Farm Bill budget, and some members of Congress would like to see major changes in the requirements and budget allocations for these programs in the next Farm Bill. Some members of Congress have also proposed totally separating the food and nutrition programs from the Farm Bill, which was highly controversial in the development of the current Farm Bill.

Crop Insurance — Another segment of the Farm Bill that is likely to come under considerable scrutiny is the Federal Crop Insurance program, with non-agriculture organizations pushing for changes to crop insurance even before the writing of the next Farm Bill. Most of the push is to lower the federal budget for crop insurance expenditures by reducing the premium subsidy, which will increase the farm operators cost of crop insurance. There is also some push to put a cap on insurance payments to individual farmers, which could affect the whole dynamics of the crop insurance industry. In the past, congressional ag leaders have been able to protect the crop insurance program from extreme budget reductions and changes. Crop insurance continues to be one of the main risk management tools for crop producers of all sizes, and provides added security to ag lenders that are financing farm operations.

Trade agreements — There was not a lot of recognition of agriculture-related issues in the recent

presidential election. However, one topic that did get considerable discussion was past and potential future trade agreements. As recently as 2014, exports of agricultural products accounted for approximately one-third of the total value of U.S. ag production, including 39 percent of total ag cash receipts in Minnesota and 37 percent in Iowa.

There are several pending trade agreements that need to be resolved by Congress and the White House, with the biggest of these being the TransPacific Partnership trade agreement with many Asian countries, including Japan. There was also some discussion of re-opening and possibly revising the North America Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, as well as in regards to trade agreements with China and other countries, which all could have a major impact on the agriculture industry.

There does not appear to be much momentum to approve the TPP during the lame-duck session of Congress late in 2016, even though President Obama strongly supports TPP. Based on comments by President-elect Trump, passing TPP in Congress and getting presidential approval in 2017 may also be very difficult, unless some changes are made to the current TPP proposed agreement. The anti-trade sentiment that was exhibited during this past election cycle has some agriculture leaders a bit worried, due to the potential financial impact on all segments of the agriculture industry.

Rising health care costs — Rising health care costs are a major concern for farm families and other rural families across the country, including in Minnesota and Iowa. Some families have seen health insurance premiums rise 50-100 percent in the past couple of years, with individual farm families and

Immigration legislation could affect ag production lies across the nation, including Minnesota, Iowa, and other Midwestern states. Many ag experts expect this trend to continue into 2017 and 2018.

Some ag leaders are questioning if current farm risk management tools and federal safety net programs are adequate to protect farm operators from financial collapse during these downturn periods.

Expect this to be a major point of discussion by ag leaders with the new administration and with congressional leaders in the coming months. The financial health of the production ag sector is also likely to impact discussions and hearings related to a new Farm Bill.

The fact that we elected Donald Trump as the next U.S. President, who has very limited political background or connections, adds to the intrigue surrounding some of the key ag policy issues that are likely to be addressed in the next couple of years.

However, it is important to remember that President-elect Trump has dealt with many of these same issues in his business ventures for many years, so he does have some working knowledge and background on the issues. It is also important to remember, that a president and the administration have limits on what regulations or policies can be enacted without Congressional approval. The leadership in the U.S. House and Senate is not likely to change significantly in 2017, and even though the Republicans have a small majority in both houses of Congress, there is no guarantee that major legislation will be passed easily.

relative to climate change, due to uncertainty regarding the scientific evidence, as well as the uncertainty regarding economic implications of the proposed climate change initiatives. It is not totally clear where the Trump administration will stand on climate change initiatives. However, expect any climate change measures to move through Congress in a very cautious manner. Some of the climate change initiatives could potentially get rolled into discussions on the next Farm Bill, or as part of trade negotiations.

Renewable energy — The Trump administration and Congress will need to decide what future direction the U.S. takes regarding the mandated use of renewable fuels through the Renewable Fuels Standard, and other incentives for renewable fuels, such as tax credits, etc. While there is generally considerable support for development of alternative energy sources, Congress and many organizations have become quite divided on the RFS and other mandated energy programs. Ethanol production, which is covered by the RFS, has a major economic impact for farm operators and on the overall rural economy — especially in the Midwest.

Immigration reform — Immigration continues to be a major issue in many portions of the United States and has a lot of political and economic ramifications. Many industries, including the agriculture industry, could be significantly impacted by any major immigration reform legislation. Both production agriculture and the ag processing industry are heavily reliant on an immigrant workforce. Newly added restrictions in getting needed workers into some areas of the United States could greatly affect the rural economy in those locations, including many areas of the Midwest. If Congress does not act on immigration reform, it is possible that the new administration could issue some executive orders relative to the issue.

Farm financial stress — Low profitability in both crop and livestock production in the past couple of years has increased financial stress for farm fami-

THIESSE from pg. 22 some small business owners now paying $30,000 to $40,000 per year or more for health care premiums — if they are even able to find adequate health care coverage. Mandated health insurance premium costs are a major issue in many rural areas of the U.S., both from a health care and financial standpoint. President-elect Trump and many members of Congress have pledged to address these issues in 2017.

WOTUS and other environmental issues — Many members of Congress and farm operators have become increasingly concerned with the enhanced environmental regulations that have been administratively enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Many of the proposed regulations could potentially have a direct impact on the future of production agriculture in some areas of the United States. The current item which is garnering considerable attention is the proposal by EPA to expand the definitions and regulatory controls under the Clean Water Act related to the Waters of the U.S. Some agriculture analysts feel that if the WOTUS provisions are fully enacted, it could greatly restrict future crop and livestock production in portions of the country. Expect the new Trump administration and the next session of Congress to be quite active on the WOTUS issue, as well as on other proposed or recently enacted EPA regulations.

Climate change — The current administration has been involved in discussions and negotiation, both within the United States and with foreign countries, regarding the issue of climate change. Many of the proposed ideas involve implementing measures to reduce the man-induced impacts of a changing climate — several of which ultimately could have a major impact on the agriculture industry. There has been some disagreement among experts as to whether the economic implications for agriculture would be more positive or negative, or would remain neutral.

Controlling buckthorn in his wooded lands near his home has allowed natural vegetation to come through while opening up the land below the trees.

Buckthorn, a tree-like shrub, can reach 25 feet when not properly controlled and sprouts leaves early in the spring and sheds leaves late in the fall, giving it an advantage against native plants when competing for water and light.

Smentek says the possibilities are interesting.

While many urban residents and environmentalists see potential in the goats to help control invasive species, those in agriculture could see an impact to their bottom line.

Aphids are a threat to soybean yields. But before aphids emerge on soybean plants, they have to live somewhere. Aphids overwinter as eggs on buckthorn in wooded areas. In the spring, eggs hatch and several generations of aphids are produced without mating. Eventually, winged aphids are produced on buckthorn, which then fly to soybean fields. During the fall, aphids return to buckthorn where they mate and deposit eggs, which subsequently overwinter.

Is it possible goats hold the key to both controlling the pesky buckthorn that pops up along fields and reducing soybean aphids in neighboring fields?

“Without knowing how far aphids migrate from buckthorn to soybean fields and back, it’s hard to say how effective controlling buckthorn is in terms of limiting aphid populations,” said Joe Smentek, director of public affairs at Minnesota Soybean and an environmental attorney.

ts official name is the Nelson and Albin Store (named for two townships), founded in 1894. “But we just call it the Godahl Store,” said Wendy Butler, who took over as manager in 2016 after working part-time for a number of years.

The store’s claim to fame in this once dominantly Norwegian area is that it “is the oldest continuously operated cooperative general merchandise store in Minnesota.”

According to Butler, the Godahl Store is not actually owned by anybody. It has a five-member board which oversees operations. It used to be a working cooperative where farmers brought their produce. The main floor was stocked to the ceiling with groceries and shoes, the basement was full of hardware, and the second floor had furniture.

“Now it is not a cooperative, but a community effort,” Butler said. “We still do a lot of things the old-fashioned way. The cash register is from the 1930s. We have charge books for the locals — the people that we know.”

The grocery shelves are sparingly stocked with items people ask for.

A few food trucks stop, but Butler said most companies don’t think it is worthwhile to do so. She buys merchandise on shopping trips. A volunteer picks up milk in a larger town and brings it to stock the cooler.

“I may work here alone, but I’ve got people helping,” Butler said.

Like any general store, it’s not just for shopping. There is a women’s card club that plays at the tables in the gathering area, and a group of men who socialize there morning and afternoon.

Along with the groceries, there are a few hardware items for sale. A local craft person has items available, and there is a magazine exchange rack. There is also a small library supplied by the bookmobile. There’s a freezer case with ice cream treats, and an area that Butler describes as an ongoing rummage sale. In addition to the library, people bring books to share.

Godahl is a hamlet of 14 people that sits on a curve where Minnesota State Highway 4 runs on the border of Brown and Watonwan counties. It explodes to 2,000-3,000 people on Labor Day when the Godahl Recreation Center holds its annual fundraising celebration. The store also holds fundraisers to make it profitable, Butler said, and some people just donate money.

“It’s a self-perpetuating thing,” Butler said. “It stays open because it’s important to the people that it stays open. I tell people we exist because it is important to exist.

There are times people don’t want to drive 13 miles each way to get a gallon of milk.” ❖
