“Teddy” salutes soldiers, veterans squares still in perfect shape.

The Teddy Bear concept came from Crystal. “Last year, we did a display featuring those lovable Minion characters,” she said. “I wanted something kids would love to see because they got really excited about the Minions last year. When Rosie talked about her soldier, I thought a Teddy Bear display would be appealing both to kids and adults. Rosie’s idea about her soldier friend suddenly made Teddy a reality for this year.”

Last year taking down the Minion display was not the happiest day for Rosie and sister Hope, age 3.

Crystal imagines taking down Teddy will be an even bigger heartache. But Chuck says this particular display can stay up as long as Mother Nature’s winter weather permits. Crystal will help. “I’ll laminate the color prints so they’ll last longer.”

So kudos to Rosie and her family for sharing just a bit of what makes America great. Some folks suggested to Crystal she charge an admission fee. But taking money to view Teddy didn’t sit well with Crystal. Instead, she invites anyone to make a donation to their own local veteran’s organization.

My wife and I stopped at the site on Oct 24. As we visited with Crystal about the creation of Teddy, a Crystal Lakeview school bus also stopped.

However, these students quickly scrambled to the base of Teddy because they wanted to salute this incredible field structure … and have their picture taken too. Teddy had just been constructed the previous Saturday.

Yes, Teddy’s creation was indeed a family project — assisted with a skid loader equipped with the necessary two spines for impaling and then lifting each of these 800-pound bales to their new function as components of this unique farm field display. Teddy stands about 18-feet tall! Devon, 18, Bryce, 17, Lane, 15, and Sheldon, 11, were the four sons doing the hands-on grunt work. Square bales are almost a relic these days. But Crystal dispatched one of her sons to check the hay mow. Yes, he found some old

Letter: Landowners be aware of EPA water powers To the Editor: The Obama administration, by executive order, has placed the regulation of Water of the United States under the auspices of the Environmental Protection Agency. This occurred after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned several punitive federal actions against landowners, as having extended beyond the reach of the law.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service of U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have regulated ag land and the Corps has had jurisdiction over ag and other land uses since 1985.

That had worked well for many years. However, the Obama administration wanted more control after their fingers were slapped by the Supreme Court. Thus, the order for the EPA to perform the tasks because their reach over environmental issues is more extensive and pervasive than were those of the other federal agencies. The EPA held hearings before they issued the final rules, but ignored the public input from private

landowners, the National Association of Realtors, farm organizations, and commodity groups.

I have read the rules as written.

They are virtually impossible to follow and will not permit anything like “normal” enjoyment and use of the landowners’ real property. Agricultural drainage in every manner is targeted in those onerous rules.

When the rules were published, 14 states filed lawsuits to challenge EPA’s rules and place a stay on implementation of them.

Shortly thereafter, both houses of Congress passed legislation to outlaw the President’s executive order over WOTUS. President Obama promptly vetoed the legislation. Congress then attempted to override the president’s veto, but the U.S. Senate was a few votes short of enough votes for the override. Both of Minnesota’s senators, Klobuchar and Franken, sided with the president and would not support the override. In other words, they voted against the rights of property

Now, during the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Hillary Clinton has taken the position that she also supports the Obama Administration in ordering the EPA to have all control of the Waters of the United States.

Candidate Trump has indicated he wishes to reduce federal regulation on businesses, but has not weighed specifically on this issue, as of this writing.

For farmers, the current regulations

appeal to the district, state, and federal levels of USDA. EPA’s rules would make many landowners guilty of infractions without any doubt. Can you imagine your rights of appeal in those cases? The rules as written will make future drainage improvements extremely difficult and costly, if not impossible.

The WOTUS issue has such major significance that farmers and landowners need to study, and make themselves aware of the presidential candidates’ position on this issue, before they make a decision on who to vote for. Single issue politics is seldom desirable. However, the future use of your property is at stake. Become knowledgeable and get involved.

Letter: Klobuchar should oppose TPP legislation To the Editor: Sen. Amy Klobuchar should come out publicly against the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The TPP is a bad deal for Minnesotans whether it’s the loss of U.S. jobs, higher healthcare costs or more extreme energy extraction, it’s not hard to find reasons to oppose TPP. The senator has said that it is still being negotiated and that those problems can still be addressed. However, even if these harmful impacts were managed or accounted for, the TPP at its core would still violate people’s basic right to have a say in our communities and our democracy — all for the sake of protecting and expanding corporate profits.

TPP’s investor state dispute resolution (ISDS) would give 9,000 foreign corporations the power to sue governments at the state, local or federal level for any law they see as “impeding expected future profits.” That means if a corporation sees our national food

safety tests as too costly, or a Minnesota township’s decision to limit mining as a threat to their profits, they could sue for millions — or scare people out of passing those laws in the first place.

Think that would never happen?

Well, it already has. Country Of Origin Labeling was repealed even though 90 percent of American consumers supported it. On top of that, the suit wouldn’t be tried in American courts, but would go to a world tribunal and be judged by a rotating panel of corporate representatives. Do you think corporate representatives have the best interests of American citizens in mind? ISDS is fundamentally undemocratic and is at the core of TPP. Sen. Klobuchar should come out against TPP and stand with her constituents, not with the corporate interests who are behind the deal.

Searching for ‘community’ in today’s agriculture

To the Editor: As you drive down the highway and see these signs protesting abortion, there’s one with a picture of a baby on it. It says, “I’m a gift from God.” Donald Trump is against abortion and also how they put Christianity out of our schools. See what they have now!

I heard Billy Graham preach and he said the reason communism doesn’t work is because they kicked God out.

I’m a farmer and a veteran. I served my country so Jesus’ name could be

preached freely.

I vote for Donald Trump. The most powerful man that ever walked on this earth, Jesus, never picked a woman to be one of his disciples.

Here’s a prayer for you and me: “Jesus, thank you for coming down to save mankind and all I have. I believe in you, I love you and trust you. Help me, pray for me, guide me so I don’t get lost or trapped on my way to heaven.”

The sight of all those plowmen and teams, the Amish farmer told the young friend, meant that if anything happened to prevent him from finishing his work, he knew his neighbors would complete it for him.

“And that would happen not out of charity,” my Old Friend said in his retelling. “It would happen out of culture and community.”

That small slice of the morning’s very detailed conversation resonated deeply with me because that too was the way it was on the southern Illinois dairy farm of my youth. My father and our neighbors often shared machinery and labor without any accounting whatsoever over who owed what to whom. Done was done and that was that.

Now, 50 years later, the community of my youth no longer exists because all those farms and farmers, save one, are as long gone as their six-row corn planters and one-row silage choppers.

What’s left, I’m left to wonder, and whatever that is, is it a community?

Letter: Election thoughts

Facilitate who exactly, asked another Old Friend. Just what is “community” today?

That simple question generated the conversation’s hardest examination of just who we are and where we fit in today’s capital intensive, less-populated farm community and more-populated, question-intensive food community.

In short, the Old Friend asked, are we now a community of cool-headed accountants whose critical measures of success are bushels, acres, and dollars; or are we a community of mutual need — like, say, a threshing ring of the past, where neighbor helped neighbor with no thought of any accounting?

Ideally, replied yet another Old Friend, it’s the latter — a community “where no one is done until everyone is done. Done is done. There’s no accounting.”

That definition of “community,” this Friend continued, was given to him by an Amish farmer friend after a day of plowing. The story, he related, went like this: The Amish farmer and a young friend were plowing one fine fall day when it came time to give the horses a rest.

After tending the livestock, the two walked up a small nearby hill so they, too, could rest. Once there, the farmer and his young friend looked out on the small valley below and counted 13

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner David J. Frederickson has named Matthew Wohlman as the agency’s new deputy commissioner.

Wohlman replaces former Deputy Commissioner Jim Boerboom who retired earlier this month.

Wohlman has been serving as assistant commissioner since 2011. During his tenure, Wohlman led the development of the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program.

October 20 There’s only three to four hours left in the combine before soybean harvest is finished. The Land spoke with Joan Lee on Oct. 20 as she reported that a breakdown with the combine followed by five hours of repairs has delayed the finish of bean harvest. The weather hasn’t helped either; it’s been “cloudy, misty,” Lee said.

The organic beans which have been combined “weren’t too bad.” Lee said her husband Mark “was OK with how they seemed to be running.”

Lee and her husband would like to have harvest complete by the first weekend of November. “It all depends on the weather,” she said. Once beans are finished, Lee’s focus will be the corn which “shouldn’t take too long.” The weather is supposed to be dry until Oct. 25. “Hopefully we’ll be able to get the stuff finished instead of having it drag on,” she said.

In the meantime, Mark has hauled hog manure from the neighbor’s and is currently plowing that in on hay ground. The Lees are also planning on joining other farmers on Oct. 21 in hauling out manure piles for a friend who is battling cancer.

While harvest is most likely only weeks away from completion, it can’t come soon enough for Lee. “I was ready for it to be done a couple weeks ago.” Lee jokes, “I hear there’s an end, but right now I’m not believing it.” The constant breakdowns so far this year “takes the fun out of it.” Lee’s hoping for a strong finish to a repair-laden harvest.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa October 31

The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Halloween; but he didn’t have any scary tales to tell about harvest, just slow progress out in the field. Soybean harvest is all wrapped up, though the crop “never did dry out.” The bean yields were excellent this year. Definitely a wonderful surprise for Moser.

There’s “20 to 25 percent of corn still out in the field.” The harvest has been slowed by wet weather occurring every couple of days. While the fields are currently quiet except for manure being spread, Moser’s optimistic that with the promising forecast “we’ll get everything harvested this week.” The corn yields so far are ranging from 210 to 240 bushels per acre. “Everyone’s pretty happy with the corn yields.” Those yields are “5 to 10 bushels better on average,” compared to last year’s yields. Moser reported “a few stalk issues, but luckily there have been no huge wind events.”

The corn harvest this fall is behind the average harvest finish date. But with such strong yields, there’s excitement in the field. It may take longer to get this year’s crop combined, but the yields are making it worth the wait.

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

Currently in between soybean and corn harvest, Andy Pulk’s focus right now is on “scraping ditches down for some drainage improvement.” The Land spoke with Pulk on Oct. 20 as he was also planning on hauling grass seed into town that day.

The soybean harvest was finished on Oct. 16 at 1:30 a.m. and he reported, “It actually went really good.” The “ground conditions firmed up,” Pulk said. He said he feels “very fortunate to get the beans done without a hitch.” Though the yield “was below average.” As for tillage, Pulk is hopeful by Oct. 22 or 23 he “should have all bean ground done.” While the field conditions have improved, Pulk is “fighting a little mud, not as bad as two week ago.”

The corn “looks pretty decent.” Pulk has heard that there’s “pretty decent yields.” If conditions are right, Pulk may start combining corn this weekend or next week. Corn usually takes Pulk a week to 10 days to combine. Pulk’s “goal is still to be done by deer hunting.” Though Pulk knows that for him, “It’s not abnormal to be at the tail-end of corn during the first week of deer hunting.”

With corn harvest still to come, Pulk said, “I’m hoping that corn is the highlight of my year.”

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

October 28 John Nielsen was a “little over half done with corn.” Then the rain came. On Oct. 24, 4 to 5 inches fell, putting a halt to what has been an excellent corn harvest thus far. The Land spoke with Nielsen on Oct. 28 as he reported that with that much rain some of the combining “might have to wait until it freezes.”

The corn that was harvested was “significantly better where we put fungicide,” Nielsen said. He said he is “seeing some yield reduction in some varieties due to the frost” in the spring. Overall, “It’s still a very good crop, probably the best I’ve ever had,” Nielsen said.

Unfortunately, getting back in the combine to finish the corn may have to wait a little longer as the forecast calls for “a little rain again Saturday night and Sunday.”

Depending on how much rain falls, Nielsen will try to get back in the field on Oct. 31. Nielsen knows that “We’re running out of time.” This wet weather pattern is unusual for this time of year. “It’s not normal to get this much rain, this late (in the year),” he said.

Nielsen is a deer hunter and always finds great joy in the hunt after getting all crops out of the ground. That won’t be the case this fall. While Nielsen plans on doing a little hunting this year, his mind will be focused on what’s left to harvest in the field.

Unfortunately, Johnson reported that Janesville, Hope and Vernon Center elevators had to reject some loads of soybeans from the Waseca area. The U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered elevators not to take grain that was flooded. In Waseca, almost 14 inches of rain fell Sept. 21 and 22.

“It came down to what they looked like and smelled like,” said Johnson.

Bob Burns, owner of Burns Sales and Service in Janesville, farms in the area. He said that there are a percentage of people along the river bottoms that suffered the most and still are not able to harvest their beans.

“We were blessed this year with growing degree units and everything got mature and ripe,” said Burns. “The above normal moisture helped in areas of the field where the water didn’t stand for excessive amounts of time.”

North Iowa Cooperative North Iowa Cooperative operates elevators in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa. As of Oct. 27, soybeans were 99 percent done and corn was close to 80 percent complete, reported Chuck Schafer, general manager of North Iowa Cooperative.

The co-op has 350,000 bushels of corn in a ground pile, which will be picked up by Nov. 18 to go to ethanol plants.

“We’ve had a little harvest rally so it is giving people an opportunity to price a little bit in here,” said Schafer.

Schafer noted that his co-op has been buying quite a few beans because gross revenue per acre on beans isn’t too bad. As for corn, some producers will sell a little to generate some cash flow.

“Then I think most of the corn will be stored and put away and see what kind of spring rally we have,” said Schafer.

Northern Country Co-op Along the Minnesota-Iowa border, Northern Country Co-op has 12 locations in Freeborn and Mower counties in Minnesota and Mitchell County in Iowa.

Ryan Mullenbach is the location manager in Adams, Minn. As of Oct. 26, the elevator and bunkers were full.

Corn harvest was almost done, but 3 inches of rain were keeping farmers from bringing in the last of their corn.

The Adams elevator used the rain delay to move beans by rail to its Staceyville, Iowa, site so they could make room for the last of the corn.

“We’ve got some sales. Everything is bottlenecked up,” said Mullenbach.

Cargill elevator, Madison The Cargill elevator in Madison, Minn., has plenty of space, including emergency space, to handle the 2016 harvest, reported Hope Mammele, sales support representative.

More storing than selling is the trend.

“If they need cash, they’re selling now. They’re in the mode ‘Let’s get it out of the field and I’ll deal with it later,” said Mammele.

Mammele noted that when corn was $5, $6 and $7 many on-farm grain bins went up in the area, which holds true statewide.

“They are using bins this fall that they haven’t used in a couple years,” Mammele estimated. ❖

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A series of more than 40 meetings on fair farm rental agreements begins in early November and continues for five weeks across the state. These free meetings are provided by the University of Minnesota Extension.

Landlords, farmers, agri-business professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative meetings being held across Minnesota.

“Farmland rental rates have never been higher,” says David Bau, Extension educator in ag business management. “Following earlier records, the prices for corn and soybeans in recent years are significantly lower. Determining a fair, profitable farm rental agreement is a challenge in today’s economy.”

Bau will examine several ways to negotiate fair rental agreements that satisfy the landowner and farmer Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends and current farmland values and sales. For Farm to School, MDA tours Westbrook-Walnut Grove school

By CAROLYN VAN LOH The Land Correspondent WESTBROOK, Minn. — Gov. Mark Dayton declared October as Farm to School Month. On Oct. 24, representatives from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Statewide Health Improvement Program visited Westbrook-Walnut Grove Elementary School as part of the produce program.

The school benefitted under the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation grant program.

Since produce is purchased from an area farmer under the Farm to School program, the school was eligible for an AGRI grant to buy equipment for preparing food in the noon lunch. The grant was used by the school to purchase a new steamer to prepare fresh vegetables for school lunches.

Michele Freeberg, Westbrook-Walnut Grove food service director, said that the steamer will steam 20 acorn squash in 45 minutes. “I wish I would have had this machine years ago,” she said.

Student favorite foods for lunch are squash, cucumbers and watermelon.

These vegetables are grown by Ruppert Garden Produce, operated by the Kim and Keri Ruppert family of Currie. Ruppert Garden Produce provides several homegrown vegetables for five area schools, including the Westbrook-Walnut Grove school. ❖

Grain Outlook Beans pull corn higher

An unlikely combination of circumstances this year has surprised even those that have been in the business for decades. Producers are experiencing record or near record corn and soybean yields, very wide basis numbers and excess moisture putting a damper on harvest progress.

South American soybean and corn planting conditions and progress has been favorable for the most part. On the demand side of the equation, our grain exports have been quite strong, despite the very strong U.S. dollar, which makes it more expensive to buyers with foreign currency. Part of the recent soybean rally was driven by tight world ending stocks of vegetable oil.

The speculative funds helped push the rally a bit higher when adding to their bought soybean positions or “long positions.”

The most recent price rally occurred during the middle of harvest. Today the market is offering higher prices if we hold on to our grain until spring or summer. The challenge with trying to get a higher price in the future comes with logistical limitations as well. Many farmers cannot store 100 percent of their production, especially in years they produce above normal yields. If you fill up your own farm storage and need to use commercial storage, be prepared to pay a bit more. As the month of October comes to a close, the livestock markets have proven that this is still a volatile group as far as price determination. The cattle market is likely going to close higher for the month; while hogs will once again close lower for the month.

Through all of the movement during the month there seems to be a firming tone to the livestock markets as we head into the month of November.

Cattle have posted a nice rally into the final weeks of October signifying some sort of a low has formed to the market. A lot of the optimism has come from the supply side of the market as numbers of cattle placed in feedlots JOE TEALE has been lower than expected Broker (according to the latest U.S. Great Plains Commodity Department of Agriculture Cattle Afton, Minn. on Feed report). Cash and futures have responded with higher prices during the last full week of October. The demand side of the beef market has not responded by increased demand for beef products at this juncture, which is a cause for concern. According to the USDA, the latest Cold Storage report shows more than anticipated beef in storage, as well as other meats.

This causes concern on how far this current price rally can last if the demand for beef does not increase in the near future. The relationships between the different meats still plays a major role to the consumer especially in the current poor economy. This will likely cause the consumer to buy the best value for the dollar which currently is not beef. Therefore, producers should be cognizant of current market conditions and be prepared to protect inventories as needed.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Oct. 28.

CORN — After posting a key reversal lower on the charts to begin the week, corn was pulled higher by the impressive strength in the soy complex, negating the chart action. Fund short covering was noted during the week that also helped counter weak exports, a mixed U.S. dollar and a more engaged grower.

Weekly ethanol production fell 7,000 barrels per day to 991,000 bpd, but maintained its status as the record holder for production for this time of year. Stocks were up 900,000 barrels to 19.9 million PHYLLIS NYSTROM barrels. Seasonally, ethanol CHS Hedging Inc. stocks begin to build from NovemSt. Paul ber through February/March.

Weekly corn export sales were below expectations at 31.5 million bushels — the smallest in the last four weeks and of the marketing year. Total export sales commitments are 85 percent ahead of last year with total commitments accounting for 41 percent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s total export outlook. In the weekly inspection report, inspections were poor at 21.3 million bushels.

An unusual note, there were no shipments to Japan.

According to reports, never in the last 10 years of inspection reports has Japan put up a goose egg.

A 204,000 metric ton sorghum sale was announced this week to China. This is an unusually large sale for this commodity and works into their feed market to replace corn. The sorghum sale may bring the sorghum sales pace back to what we need to hit the

The Chinese government had previously announced that they had granted at least two companies permission to export up to 2 million metric tons of corn. Also from China, the government is offering processors in the top producing provinces subsidies up to $29.50 per ton (75 cents per bushel) to buy corn from farmers. Corn must be bought between November and April, and reportedly must be used by the end of June. China is moving away from stockpiling corn and farmers there must rely on the “market” to price their grain.

The International Grains Council raised their world corn production number by 8 mmt to 1.035 billion tons. The USDA attaché in Argentina is forecasting its corn exports to hit 26 mmt this year, up 1 mmt from the USDA’s official figure. Both parties are expecting production at 36.5 mmt.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange has Argentina’s corn planting at 36 percent complete vs. 33 percent last year. They project a 27 percent increase in corn acres this year. There has been talk that flooding in Argentina may be an issue. So far, most of the flooding has been south of

major growing regions.

Remember, it’s spring in Argentina, so they should be getting rain. It may bear watching, but it’s too early to get too worked up about it yet.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange will amend the rules for live cattle futures delivery to delete the Norfolk, Neb., cattle stockyard from delivery facilities. The Nebraska Livestock Sales of Norfolk requested the removal after informing the CME it had closed this facility. The amendment will apply to all contract months, according to the CME. OUTLOOK: Corn closed above its 100-day moving average for the first time since June as technical buying and fund short covering in corn followed the rally in soybeans. The last 40 percent of corn harvest is also expected to exert more pressure on the market than the first 60 percent of harvest.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans continue to shrug off a record crop and focus on demand, outside markets and most definitely money flow. It’s believed that money is moving from the equity market to the commodity market. November soybeans pushed past $10.00 per bushel for the first time since last August as funds had their buying shoes on and palm oil lent support to the soy complex.

If we are looking to carry corn into July, we might be looking at paying nearly 50 cents a bushel to “carry” or hold grain for eight months of the year.

To figure your “cost to carry,” multiply the current futures price times the days to hold divided by 365. Multiply that number times the interest rate. Add that number to the number of days divided by 365 times 12 times the monthly storage rate. When deciding to hold onto grain the expected returns need to outweigh the costs.

In many cases, on-farm storage is a very economical way to capture higher prices in deferred months — especially in years with large crops.

Typically, the market pays more to hold large crops since the demand pipeline is full at harvest. On-farm storage can pay you back in the form

China was in the market for soybeans this week with the USDA announcing a total of 912,000 metric tons sold to China and 129,000 metric tons to unknown. China didn’t play favorites as they reportedly also purchased four cargoes from Brazil for the November/December time frame, with more deals for November through January in the hopper. This is normally a period in which we own the soybean export market.

The intraday rollercoaster ride in soybeans this week was also influenced by the palm oil production numbers coming from Malaysia. One day, it’s announced their September production was down 11.4 percent, and the next day it’s corrected to up 3.9 percent! Overall, palm oil finished the week with strong gains. The soy oil market responded to the first announcement with a spike higher, followed by selling the balance of the week. By then, the meal market took the lead to keep the soybean rally intact. There was the unwinding of meal/oil spreads during the week. Buying meal/selling oil was a force behind the bean rally.

South American weather is termed generally good, with some concern over too much rainfall in parts of Argentina. The flooded areas are south of the main growing regions. Keep in mind the old saying, “rain makes grain” and it’s their spring when they should get rain. The rain is forecasted to move out of the area and drier conditions are expected through Nov. 10.

The International Grains Council increased its world soybean production number by 3 mmt to 332 mmt. A news service survey pegged Brazil’s bean crop at 102.8 mmt compared to the USDA estimate of 102 mmt and last year’s crop of 96.5 mmt. As of Oct. 21, Brazil’s bean planting was estimated

of higher basis levels (estimated 20-30 cents per bushel basis improvement), plus another 20-25 cents per bushel increase in the futures prices for deferred months.

Making your grain bins pay you back includes actions like “locking in the carry” (selling deferred cash contracts) and hedge to arrive contracts or selling futures for spring or summer months.

at 26 percent complete vs. 19 percent on average, according to traders. An aggressive planting pace in Mato Grosso could make 25 percent of the state’s production ready in January compared to 10 percent normally ready by then. Argentina’s bean planting is just getting underway.

Weekly soybean export sales were within expectations at 75.2 million bushels and are similar to last year’s export pattern. Total sales are 24 percent ahead of last year. Total commitments account for 61 percent of the USDA’s export forecast. Regarding export inspections, shipments to China are up 32 percent vs. a year ago, but shipments to everyone else are down 28 percent. Notes to ponder: based on history, about half of the beans sold to China ship by Thanksgiving. The surge in Chinese buying at this time of year isn’t unusual and that buying usually peaks in late October.

Interest from growers is perking up in the November 2017 contract when it pushed through $10.00 per bushel.

Lenders are also eyeing this area as a place for growers to begin making sales. There are many ways to take advantage of this opportunity using futures, options, or specialty pricing contracts if it works into your marketing plan.

OUTLOOK: Technically, soybeans are overbought and it’s not unusual for a price decline in early November after an October rally. Support in the January soybean contract lies near $10.13 to $10.00 per bushel. Resistance may not be an issue until closer to $10.50 per bushel, but this week’s high of $10.31 per bushel will be viewed as first resistance. For the week, November soybeans rallied 18.25 cents to close at $10.01.25 per bushel. January soybeans were the leader with a 19.75 cent jump to $10.12. ❖

Hog market stabilizes TEALE, from pg. 15 The hog market appears to be stabilizing over the past several weeks as cash prices have fluctuated back and forth in the lower $50 area basis lean.

The futures market, which has been a very discounted market, has responded with a decent rally to close these deep discounts the past few weeks. At these current cash prices, the supply of hogs and the demand for pork seem to be temporarily at an equilibrium.

The fact that the USDA Cold Storage report indicated that the pork in stor-

age is greater than analysts anticipated may have a factor on prices in the weeks ahead. Demand for pork has remained fairly stable which has been the major factor in the stabilization of cash prices in the last half of the month of October. It would appear that if the hog prices are to rally from these levels at the current time, demand for pork products will have to increase both domestically and from exports.

Producers should continue to watch market conditions and protect inventories if and when opportunities arise. ❖

It was a normal day for manager Jennifer Stave, who often carries the groceries to a customer’s car.

But more than a decade ago, all of this normalcy almost didn’t happen. Back in 2002, when the owners of the grocery store abruptly closed the doors,

things looked pretty bleak for the town of 500.

Gene Peters, a farmer who was retiring at that time, purchased the building.

Peters and Ver Steeg visited back and forth, collaborating on a doable fix for the problem. They shared their concerns and ideas with Little Rock’s Town and Country Club, an organization of local farmers and town people which promotes and serves the needs of the community.

“At a public meeting, we discussed the idea of selling shares,” said Ver Steeg. “If people would purchase shares worth $250 and we could raise $25,000, we would have enough to stock the shelves and hire a manager.”

When possible, 10 percent would be paid back to the shareowners in the form of a $25 coupon to be used at the store. After 10 years, the shares would become null and void. Shares were not passed on to heirs if a shareholder passed away.

Upon the advice of a lawyer, the store is a limited liability company. Ver Steeg is the president of the LLC. “Ten years have passed,” said Peters. “The store is still open because the local people support it.”

People like Gerald De Boer said if shares were needed again, he would purchase shares in a heartbeat.

Hometown grocer Jennifer Stave has been the general manager since the store opened on July 7, 2003. She grew up in Little Rock and returned with a husband and twin sons at about the time the store was opening.

“We wanted our children to grow up in a small town with a smaller school,” said Stave. “And I like to cook.”

Which is a good thing, because Stave shares the deli cooking and other store duties with Wiertzema and the store’s other part-time employees: Dixie Kruger, Donna Meyer and Jackie Olson.

“The deli keeps us busy,” said Stave. “We have a full deli menu. Hot dishes, broasted chicken, chicken strips, fries, cheese balls, onion rings, pizza, chicken, pork tenderloin and fish patties, chicken wraps, burritos, sub sandwiches and potato salad.”

The store features a weekly ad with specials. Stave said (with just a bit of hometown pride) that when

one factors in distance and time, the store can be competitive as their prices are reasonable.

“We aren’t able to carry every single item,” said Stave. “But if a customer asks for something specific, we can usually get it in.”

Twice a week, the store is restocked. An order is placed with a grocery in the nearby town of George.

When the truck comes in, a volunteer from Little Rock heads over to George to pick up the order. Volunteers then unload the truck and restock the shelves.

“The store does cash flow,” said Peters. “Unless there is some major problem, such as the heating system fails. Refrigeration was a big one.”

Again, the locals came to the rescue. The Town and Country Club held fundraising dinners which helped pay half of the $30,000 needed.

Improvements have been made to the building.

The deli is painted in George-Little Rock school district colors of red and white. It seats 30 customers.

Other amenities include the soft-serve ice cream machine which fills a need in the summertime. In the spring, the store has a supply of nursery plants from a local grower.

“The store succeeds because the town supports it,” said Peters.

“Without a store, the town would die,” said Stave.

“We need this store,” said Virginia Klaassen. ❖

Larch and tamarack are two trees which are often thought to be identical. They are in the genera of the pine family (Pinaceae) and tamarack is a specific species of larch. The unique attribute of larches is the needle color in the fall. The bright golden color beautifies roadsides along swampy areas.

Plant nurseries are increasingly offering new cultivars of larches. We are delighted with our Larch Kaemferi “Diana.” It is not a dwarf but is a slow grower. It is about 15 years old and has reached a height of 18 feet. The spread is about 6 feet. This is a semi-weeping tree with twisted, contorted branches that are pendulous at the tips. In the spring, the new needle growth starts out as a bright chartreuse color and turns to a lovely darker green in the summer. The needles are very soft and pleasant to touch. In the fall, when the needles turn to deep golden colors, it is a breathtaking sight against the bright blue sky and a background of other green conifers.

Larch is easily identified by its rough, scaly bark and beautiful gold color in the fall.

Larch Diana offers year-round interest with the trunk sporting a rough, scaly textured surface and the twisted bare branches providing an unusual silhouette that is enhanced with a dusting of snow. I read that grouse enjoy eating the new needle growth in the spring. We have observed many warblers, sparrows and common yellow throats lighting in the tree during migrations.

Tamaracks prefer moist locations and if planted in a garden, they thrive with frequent watering. They also like full sun. Pruning is optional, but it can be done selectively to enhance the shape. The wood is tough and durable and was used by the Algonquian people for making snowshoes. Tamarack poles were used in making corduroy roads because of their resistance to rot. Currently the wood is used primarily for pulpwood, posts, poles, rough lumber and fuel wood.

Larches make great specimen plants for yards and gardens. Tamaracks (species of larch) are also used as landscape trees of distinction. Many cultivars have been developed that include smaller weeping trees as well as some that grow in a prostate form.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture announce its October Class 4a and 4b milk prices and the comparable Federal order Class II, III, and IV milk prices are announced by USDA on Nov. 2.

Cash cheese headed higher for the second week in a row with cheddar blocks closing Oct. 28 at $1.73 per pound, up 8 cents on the week and 11 cents above a year ago. The barrels closed at $1.5975, up 2.75 cents on the week. This is a quarter-cent above a year ago, but an abnormally high 13.25 cents below the blocks. Five cars of block traded hands on the week and 19 of barrel.

Regional butter manufacturing is very active, according to Dairy Market News, and farm milk output and components are up. “Cream is readily available for churning. Most butter processors are running at full capacity as holiday orders continue to develop. Bulk stocks are heavy to moderate. Demand from retailers is strong as the fourth quarter holidays are very close. Some manufacturers and buyers are settling up contracts agreements for first quarter 2017.”

Western butter churns are also active, says Dairy Market News, “as butter makers ramp up in advance of holiday demand. Industry contacts say production and sales are strong. Cream supplies are adequate for most processing needs, although cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream are pulling heavily for available cream. Butter inventories may still be long as compared to last year, but end users suggest there has been a good draw down of available butter stocks.”

■ Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk saw an 85.5 cent per pound close on Oct. 28. This is down 2.5 cents on the week, but 3.5 cents above a year ago. Five cars were sold on the week. NDPSR powder averaged 91.93 cents per pound, down 0.2 cents from the previous week. Dry whey was up 1.7 cents, to 34.28 cents per pound.

Dairy Market New’s weekly milk production update reported that farm milk output is up in Florida, California, Arizona and the central region, but steady in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Production is down in New Mexico, the Pacific Northwest and the mountain states of Colorado, Utah and Idaho.

“Nationwide, milk components are improving and milk supplies are in balance with processing needs,” says Dairy Market News. “Bottled milk sales vary throughout the country. Condensed skim usage into nonfat dry milk processing is strong. Cream is readily available in all regions and demand from sour cream, yogurt and cream cheese manufacturers is improving. Heavy cream volumes continue clearing into butter churning. Some sellers and buyers are finalizing cream contracts for first quarter 2017.”

■ Cooperatives Working Together accepted eight requests for export assistance this week from Foremost Farms, Dairy Farmers of America, Northwest Dairy Association (Darigold), O-At-Ka/Upstate-Niagara Cooperative and United Dairymen of Arizona.

These member cooperatives have contracts to sell 873,031 pounds of butter and 136,687 pounds of Cheddar cheese to customers in Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

“After the last GDT event there was every chance that the rest of October could rebound from the wet and cold start, the sun to come out and replenish pastures that have been well behind normal growth levels,” HighGround reported. “It seems for the Waikato/Manawatu/Rangitikei areas, that has not been the case and although some recent weather over the long Labor Holiday weekend provided respite, perhaps it is a little too late for the peak for some pasture based operations.”

HighGround says the data is “anecdotal” and “difficult to ascertain” but “More will be known when Fonterra’s Global Dairy Update is released for September data and then the world will eagerly await October’s.”

“Our conclusion from two weeks ago remains the same. HighGround believes that the fairly quick downshift in Fonterra’s milk collection is of concern and buyers should take note of the declines in New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and Europe as a reason to become more aggressive with 2017 coverage. Global demand and the lack of any aggressive bidding on the GDT platform these last auctions with heavy Chinese interest does take the sting out of a dramatic bull rally, but HighGround believes that when all the fundamental factors are weighed for the upcoming 36 months, downside price risk from today’s levels are limited.”

Today, there is so much more scientific knowledge on what and how to use these products. Farmers are using less per acre and because of the increased resistance of these new crops to a host of disease issues, environmental health of our soils is improving I’m told.”

With the Minnesota Beef Council, Rhoads coordinates and works trade shows and directs the communication with the beef retail and foodservice partners. She also attends the Cattlemen’s meetings frequently.

Organic livestock research MORRIS, Minn. — The University of Minnesota has been awarded a three-year, $1.4 million project to advance animal health on organic farms from the USDA Organic Research and Extension Initiative.

Researchers are from the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine, with partners from the University of Colorado, Kansas State University, and The Ohio State Veterinary College.

The collaborative effort will assess innovative preventive and curative approaches for mastitis, lameness, reproductive disorders, calf health, and fly management under field conditions on organic dairies across the nation. Alternative therapies and prevention strategies will be evaluated.

The team will create a searchable online database of alternative therapies and treatment protocol.

Some other notable excursions have been into research on Minnesota-hardy stone fruit trees, gardens built around model railroads, the saving of the Minnesota State Fair carousel (now called the Cafesjian Carousel in Como Park), the last maker of barber poles in the United States, and a champion horseshoe pitcher.

Central to all this are the farmers I have met.

Some were raisers of livestock. Others were trying new conservation measures or approaching agriculture in ways outside of conventional methods. All were excited to be working with the land and the livestock.

Some of the enjoyment of writing for The Land is the experiences that go with it, such as the story on mulberries which included an invitation to coffee and a delicious mulberry dessert. A story on the Minneota Iris Society resulted in the gift of some exquisite irises that still bloom in my garden. When I wrote of Mr. B Chocolatier, I was “forced” to sample some of their chocolates before the interview.

Then there was the time I was early for an interview in Litchfield, so I stopped in a shop. It was operated by a little lady in her 80s who painted china, and resulted in a “Back Roads” story. When I stopped back a year later, she was closing the shop and I purchased the last tea cup and saucer she had on the shelf.

I congratulate The Land on its 40th anniversary of telling the stories of rural Minnesota and now northern Iowa, and am grateful they have allowed me to be a part of it. I hope to be able to help them tell a few more of those stories before the pen runs dry. (Or should I say, the computer crashes.) ❖

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent When I wrote my first article for The Land in 1996 and got the go-ahead from the editor to do freelance work for the magazine, still submitting articles 20 years later was not an expectation. It has worked so well for so long because through a succession of editors, the magazine has remained open to diverse points of view and a variety of topics. The “Back Roads” feature has further broadened the subject matter.

The real gratification comes from all of the people I’ve had the opportunity to meet, not to mention the places visited and stories learned through writing about them. I’d be hard-pressed to pick any favorites from the over 200 articles and “Back Roads” I have submitted, but listing some stories is easy.

Livestock stories opened up a world of breeds, some of which I had not known before. There have been the draft horses: Percheron, Shire, American Cream; and others like Morgan, Tennessee Walking, and Hanoverian horses, plus donkeys and mules. There were cattle like Murray Grey, Aubrac and Dexter, and a story on bison. Then there were Targhee sheep, Kiko goats, racing pigeons, and the list goes on.

The garden issues have let me hear about raising cactus, mushrooms, garlic, hosta, day lillies, and English gardens. The history issues have let me use my interest in history to explore numerous subjects and places, not to mention all those personal tours of museums and historic sites.

It has been encouraging to write about efforts at helping recovery for redheaded woodpeckers, bluebirds, monarch butterflies, and the most successful effort, wild turkeys. Even more so was the story of

Pro-Ag Outlook Meetings to be held across Iowa The Pro-Ag Outlook and Management Seminars are designed to provide agribusiness leaders with a concise evaluation of current market conditions, expected trends in crop and livestock income potential and management implications. Participants will also receive an overview of the agricultural industry and learn how changes may affect Iowa producers.

Programs are held regionally across Iowa in November and December.

The first presenter will be Wendong Zhang. Zhang is the leading researcher for the Iowa Land Value Survey, the Iowa Farmland Ownership and Tenure Survey, as well as the ISU Soil Management and Land Valuation Conference. His land value model predicts future land prices, so he will be sharing where land values are headed and how quickly they will bottom out.

The second presenter is Chad Hart, Extension crop economist, from Iowa State University. Hart will discuss the market outlook for corn and soybeans.

Current production has driven prices to recent lows, while input prices have only moderated slightly. You won’t want to miss the information on the production and demand for corn and soybeans in the coming months and

I

n most celebratory venues, BYOB means bring your own beverage. However, in New London, Minn., along the Crow River, BYOB could mean bring your own bench.

Just below the Mill Pond Dam is a large eggshaped sculpture, some smaller sculptures, benches and two covered pianos. There is no piano bench so set yours down and pull the heavy beige piano covers off. Under the drab covers you’ll find pianos that are so wildly colorful that you will believe a wandering band of Merry Pranksters briefly liberated them before returning them to the good citizens of New London.

Now, pull your bench up close to the keyboard, sit

down and play a few chords.

The pianos are in surprisingly good tune although the keyboards, like the Velveteen Rabbit, are well loved. The pedals work well too.

Okay, now do what you’ve always wanted to do — perform Gershwin’s “American in Paris” to the accompaniment of a waterfall. You don’t need an audience or you can invite hundreds. It’s up to you.

That’s the way it is all along the Mill Pond Music Trail.

Calling it a trail is perhaps an exaggeration; but if you walk south, past the pretty quonset building on the west side of the pond, and turn into Holm Park, you’ll see two large xylophones down near the band shell.

The two xylophones each sound slightly different and are mounted on separate pedestals next to each other.

Each has two mallets. They are both made by Freenotes Harmony Park and are topquality outdoor instruments that appear largely indestructible (although there are signs saying “No Climbing”).

Facing the Mill Pond, anybody can improvise a solo or, with a partner, a duet.

The next instruments are at the beach on the park’s south side. You can see the beach from Holm Park; but to get there you’ll need to walk, or drive, a quarter of a mile through a pleasant residential area. At the beach are five brightly-colored conga drums of different sizes. There are also two more xylophones which are shaped differently and sound differently than the Holm Park xylophones.

Finally, on the west side of the bridge over the Crow River are seven huge chimes. I love these because you can strike them with a mallet and feel them vibrate through your whole body as they gong over the pond.

The Mill Pond Music Trail was dedicated in September and is part of the Riverspace Project. ❖
