Not surprising, several of the groups which signed the letter have been reprimanded by USDA for illegal use of checkoff money.

In my May 1993 column (just the second Farm and Food File I wrote) I explained how a USDA audit of the relatively new, non-refundable soybean checkoff uncovered “$405,219 of ‘questioned costs’” by the checkoff’s key contractor, the American Soybean Association.

How did a freelance journalist like me working alone in the middle of an Illinois cornfield get the audit results?

I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service — the overlord of all federal checkoffs.

Later, a Feb. 1997 column exposed how the National Pork Producers Council, the chief contractor for the pork checkoff, had hired a Washington, D.C. consulting firm to spy on “activist groups whose philosophies,” it explained, “might have an effect on the pork industry.”

Unbelievably, the “activist” groups NPPC were “monitoring” as “part of an ongoing $100,000 checkoff-sponsored” effort (illegal under checkoff law)

included the National Farmers Union and Nebraska’s Center for Rural Affairs.

Checkoff rule-bending continues. A partial, 2013 USDA audit of the beef checkoff, showed $216,000 had been spent on “non-checkoff activities.” One was an international airline ticket for an official’s spouse.

In 2015, a “FOIA request compelled the American Egg Board (the egg checkoff) to turn over documents” which exposed how its leader illegally “tried to organize a public relations campaign against a vegan competitor” because (I’m not kidding) the competitor’s mayonnaise recipe did not include eggs.

Last August, the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. ruled that a federal lawsuit filed by the Humane Society of the United States and others against the pork checkoff could go forward.

The previous week I visited the David Legvold farm, about three miles north of Northfield. He has the honor of being the first to have his farm certified in the new Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification program.

What motivated Legvold? He shared this intriguing thought: “I started listening to my land.”

My point in sharing items from those three weeks is simply to remind all of us that agriculture is indeed the most diversified, the most gregarious and the most environmentally stimulating industry on planet earth. And this year it appears to be the most financially challenging also.

But might there be some money in farming in 2016 after all? Too much rain in Argentina has severely crimped anticipated production in their huge soybean crop. They might not even be the biggest exporter to China at this rate. So weather disturbances in

another continent apparently is ramping up soybean prices for American farmers who will sell that much more to China. Some are already talking a $10 crop come harvest time.

Even corn appears to have some new legs, but forecasters seem to differ as to why. Ethanol still captures about 36 percent of yearly U.S. corn production.

I’m not aware of negative weather issues this spring for U.S. farmers. Yet some are already questioning trendline yields for the 2016 crop. And that’s generating chatter of a $4 price for U.S. corn this fall.

Let’s not get too excited. It’s early, very early. We know 10 days of sunshine squelches gloom rapidly. That’s the energy of talking with farmers. You think positively despite the economic squeeze. And why not? “The Lord giveth; the Lord taketh away,” is the Bible message. So faith is a good starting point always.

Checkoff rules open to abuse under new FOIA ruling OPINION

Landowners, counties and watershed districts are now reviewing the preliminary map of Minnesota public waters requiring protective buffers. Landowners who have buffers identified on their property can work with their local soil and water conservation district or drainage authority to ensure the preliminary map is accurate.

Minnesota’s buffer law establishes new perennial vegetation buffers of up to 50 feet along rivers, streams and public ditches to help filter out phosphorus, nitrogen and sediment. The Department of Natural Resources’ role is to produce a map of the public waters and public ditches that require permanent vegetation buffers.

The preliminary map created by the DNR displays public ditches only in counties and watershed districts that have submitted their data and had them incorporated into the map by the DNR. Eighty-two of the 95 drainage authorities have submitted the required data.

Counties and watershed districts reviewing the preliminary map can suggest updates or corrections where ditch data on the map may not accurately show the current length or course of public ditches.

The DNR has designed a tool that local governments can use to easily submit their suggested corrections online. Corrections made during this review process will help the DNR deliver a more accurate buffer map this summer.

The preliminary buffer map and status map are available at www.mndnr.gov/buffers. Also available at this website is a link to submit comments through May 31 about how the map is being created and more information about the buffer mapping project.

Moreover, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia declared checkoffs to be “government speech” in a 2005 beef checkoff case — a phrase most checkoffs cheered at the time.

April 27 Planting has started on Mark and Joan Lee’s farm. Planting has also stopped on the Lee farm. Joan said her husband “Mark has gotten all the oats in so far.” That is 70 acres of crops in the ground. She added he “got the field ready for wheat.”

Then the rains came – 2 inches of rain to be exact. As for the temperature, “It’s cooler, not optimum seeding and growing weather,” she said.

Lee is planting about 40 acres each of wheat and soybeans. Most of the organic corn, oats and hay are feed to an organic dairy herd.

Lee feels hopeful that planting can begin in a few days which would be Lee’s average planting date. For Lee a little sunshine and warmer temperatures are needed to get the growing season off on the right foot.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa April 27 Some area farmers have begun planting.

Kent Moser isn’t one of them. “Not much corn is in the ground,” he said.

Moser estimates that 8 to 10 percent has been planted. Soil conditions are just too cold and wet currently to start planting.

“It’s going to be late Monday or Tuesday before we are able to work some ground,” Moser reported.

Moser said he feels the optimum planting start date in his area is between April 22 and 26. Once conditions are right, Moser will help his dad plant two-thirds of his acres with corn and one-third soybeans on the farm near Lester.

He also assists his father-in-law who will be planting “all corn-on-corn.”

It has been a wet spring so far in the Roseau area. “We can’t hardly drive a fourwheeler through stuff,” he said.

It’s been rainy for the last two weeks.

The average start date for planting on the Pulk farm is April 25. This year, Pulk is optimistic he can be in the field on May 5. While rain isn’t in the forecast, unfortunately neither is warmer temperatures.

Pulk already planted 1,000 acres of rye grass last year and so far it “looks beautiful.” In addition to rye grass, Pulk will be planting corn, soybeans and wheat. “The wheat will be under-seeded to rye grass,” he explained.

Warmer, drier weather and some days in the tractor would be the ideal way to kick off this growing season.

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

April 29 Nielsen can officially cross planting corn off his spring to-do list. “We got done with corn a week ago today,” he reported.

Nielsen began planting on April 13-14.

On April 26 Nielsen was able to plant 200 acres of soybeans, then the rain came.

Nielsen estimated that he had “probably three or four customers that have half to one-third of their beans in.”

The planting conditions in the Albert Lea area have been pretty ideal so far this spring. With the rain that fell on April 27, Nielsen said he feels that “We’re sitting in great shape.”

Introducing our From The Fields reporters How did a southern Minnesota guy end up farming in northern Minnesota? One word: opportunity. The path from southern Minnesota to Roseau started near New Prague where Andy Pulk grew up. Pulk was raised on a small hobby farm surrounded by “lots of dairy farms.”

Pulk vividly remembers the early 1990s as the time that “almost demolished the dairy industry in that area.” Low milk prices caused many dairies to collapse. Growing up, Pulk recalls being told by quite a few people: “Don’t be a farmer.” The farm crisis in

the 1980s was still fresh in many peoples’ minds and being a farmer was viewed by some as being too risky a profession.

Pulk decided to put agriculture out of his mind and received a degree in natural resources technology from Vermillion Community College in Ely. After college he went to work doing prairie restoration projects for various companies. In 2002, Pulk decided to start his own prairie restoration business that soon led to farming a little on the side. He also had a grass-fed cow/calf business.

In 2007, Pulk said he “saw the writing on the wall with the prairie business.” With the economy tanking, Pulk decided it was time to devote his time entirely to his dream of becoming a full-time farmer. An opportunity came for Pulk to head to Roseau to do some custom farm work. He sold his calves and cows and headed north.

While he initially came to Roseau to do custom work, he actually ended up doing very little of that.

Joan Lee, McIntosh, Minn. began working part time for a law office in town.

It was during this time an agricultural publication was hearing from some single farmers who were interested in meeting others that enjoyed the farming lifestyle. This publication decided to put a dating book together and Lee’s coworker told her “You got to do this.” Lee sent in her information and a package was sent back to her full of eligible farmer bachelors.

One farmer stood out — Mark Lee, a dairy farmer from McIntosh.

Quickly things got serious and love was definitely in the air as Lee and Mark married in October 1986.

Once married, Lee joined her husband in McIntosh and soon learned that no two dairy farms are the same. Lee was used to a tie-stall barn growing up and now had to adjust to a stanchion barn. Lee said she “helped with calves, top dressing of cattle and it just evolved more to helping with the milking.”

Lee wasn’t only busy with the dairy but in raising children too, daughter Rebecca was born in 1989, son Joseph in 1990 and daughter Samantha joined the family in 1994.

John Nielsen was a self-proclaimed “town kid.”

Growing up in Albert Lea, it was his grandfather and his pigs that piqued Nielsen’s interest in agriculture. While it was only three miles from town, it offered Nielsen a whole new world of opportunity to grow his interest in raising pigs.

Nielsen started raising pigs with grandfather when he was 8 years old. This love of raising pigs grew and grew. It grew into cold hard cash that resulted in having “nice cars because I sold feeder pigs” while in high school. As for crop production, Nielsen “learned that from neighbors.”

After high school he attended junior college in

Austin, then got a job at Wilson meatpacking in Albert Lea. Wanting to try something different, Nielsen went back to vocational school for traffic management. He then did an internship at Cargill in Wayzata. That led to a job offer from Cargill for a position in Kansas, Nielsen “got cold feet” on the idea of moving there. Soon he was back at Wilson’s, but he then made the decision to start farming. He started out with 80 acres.

In 1986 Nielsen bought his wife’s parents’ farm which added to his acres but obtaining additional acres proved challenging.

“It was hard to rent land as I didn’t come from an

established farm,” Nielsen said.

Little by little, Nielsen gained more acres. He also was building a large hog operation. In 1996-97 he built a 4,000 finisher site. From 1976 until the mid1990s, Nielsen also had 400 to 500 sows at his home farm. Pigs were profitable for Nielsen.

“I made more money on the pigs than the land the first 10 years,” he said.

As Nielsen’s farming operation grew, so did his family; he and his wife Sue have three children, Luke, Matthew and Tosha. Farming must’ve worn

“I was one of those that was never going to marry a farmer.” Joan Lee learned quickly to never say never.

Lee grew up on a dairy farm near Princeton, and wanted to see what life had in store for her outside a dairy barn. She went to the St. Cloud Business College and after graduation worked in the legal field and later for Nash Finch. During this time she was traveling back home to Princeton to help her parents on the dairy farm. In 1983 Lee was involved in a serious car accident and was unable to work. She moved back home to Princeton to recuperate and

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa He also helps with his father’s farming operation along with assisting his father-in-law in his crop production. Whether he is helping other farmers with agronomy services or getting in the tractor and helping with his family’s operation, Moser finds happiness out in the field.

Some producers are feeling optimism in the upswing in soybean prices; Moser said, “This run-up on soybeans is overdone.” Moser remains “cautiously optimistic.”

“It’s going to be one of those years that you have to watch everything and be very efficient,” Moser said.

With efficiency in mind, Moser made a change to nitrogen applications. “We are going to split up our nitrogen applications and plan on side dressing later on,” he said.

This year, doing all that you can to ensure strong yields while keeping operating expenses down will be vital. Even with lower commodity prices, Moser is optimistic that a well-organized crop plan should yield a profitable return as long as Mother Nature plays along nicely between now and harvest time.

Happiness, for Moser is also found in his family.

Moser and his wife Elyse are parents to three busy and delightful daughters, Evie 4; Meredith, 3; and Madelyn 6 months. They are enjoying life in an older farm house that they made their own and are “glad to have a place in the country.”

From growing up on the farm and continuing to assist his father in farming, to running his own ag business, Moser wears many hats. But at the end of the long days, as long as he’s getting out in the field, life is as it should be for Kent Moser. ❖

“It’s always been where my passion is.” That sums up Kent Moser’s fervidness for agriculture. Moser grew up on a small family farm near Lester, where his family raised corn, soybeans and hogs. The strong interest in agriculture led Moser to graduate with an ag business degree in 2005 from Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville.

After graduation, Moser worked for both small and large producers, a co-op and finally started his own business.

“A lot of my experience is on-the-job,” Moser said.

He owns Moser Seed and Ag in Rock Rapids, Iowa, where his main focus is Syngenta seed sales. He also does crop scouting and consulting. In addition, Moser started a custom spray operation with his brother-in-law.

It was crop production which didn’t come as easily for Nielsen. There were some bumps along the way. “I’ve cut off most of my fingers in a combining accident,” Nielsen said.

That happened in 1991 and fortunately, doctors were able to patch Nielsen up.

Nielsen currently grows corn and soybeans along with doing 600 acres of custom farm work.

He feels the biggest challenge he faces in farming is marketing. While marketing has always been vital, Nielsen is “dealing with more dollars now.”

That is true whether it’s the hogs or crops. ❖

His first year, Pulk started with 750 acres of wheat and soybeans; planting was challenging that year due to a “terrible spring.”

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Pulk on the farm; it was a steep learning curve understanding the differences between farming in southern Minnesota and farming up north. Pulk found one challenge was “definitely the different crop rotations,” as well as the “logistics of trying to balance seeding season with harvest.”

Northern Minnesota climate can be harsh. “The weather is definitely extreme up here,” Pulk said.

“We don’t have the luxury of extending out crop planting until June.”

Pulk has more planting to do this year as they increased acres. Pulk is working with another farmer. Pulk said he believes that an average crop would keep everyone in the black. “Everybody here is praying for an average crop.”

Even with all the challenges, Pulk enjoys the farming way of life in northern Minnesota. It has trans-

lated into more family time, something that is vitally important to Pulk.

Pulk is a family man; he and his wife Heidi are the proud parents of Sarah, 7; Madi, 4; Emily 3; and twin sons John and Henry, a year and a half.

For Pulk one of the countless benefits of being a farmer is the opportunity to be able to have lunch with his family, whether eating with the family around the kitchen table or taking a break from planting to have lunch in the field with wife and kids. This is the lifestyle that suits he and his family well. ❖

Dairy cows sold, barn still in use LEE, from pg. 7 The farm made a major transition in 2006 when the dairy went organic as did part of the crop production. Currently Lee grows organic oats, corn and hay along with conventional wheat and soybeans.

The Lee farm is looking ahead at marketing the crops.

“Mark has done some forward contracting on soybeans,” she said.

Lee is hopeful for the soybean crop as it “seems like the soybean market is rebounding some.” The “wheat is still low (prices),” she added.

In addition to farming, Lee also serves as a Polk County Commissioner.

Dairy life was fulfilling for Lee, but it was also extremely busy with little or no time to travel, visit family or to sleep in, ever. Lee and Mark decided to make a lifestyle change and in September 2014, they sold their dairy herd. With a dairy barn still on their property they wanted to help others starting out in dairy farming by giving them the opportunity to use their barn. A young couple started milking their own dairy herd in Lee’s facility.

“They bought the bred heifers that we had left at that time,” she said.

This lifestyle change has also allowed Lee to be able to travel to Princeton to tend to her mother while she’s been dealing with health issues. In addition, it has given Lee the opportunity to travel stateside and internationally.

Farming continues to evolve and for Lee, the farming lifestyle still brings her joy as well as now some freedom to take in experiences outside the farm. ❖

speak both languages,” Elsie said. “She helped us translate.”

Elsie learned English quickly and was soon enthralled by the history and geography lessons.

“I loved those classes and learning new things,” Elsie said. “I wish I could have gone to high school but there was no way to get to town every day.”

Elsie didn’t go to high school to advance her knowledge, but she did continue learning life skills on the farm. From her mother she learned cooking, food preservation, gardening and home economics.

From her father she learned how to manage a team of horses, to care for dairy cows and farrowing sows, and how to do field work.

Greatest generation When Elsie and Wendelin were married on April 7, 1947, Elsie was ready to stand alongside him as a full partner in a farm. But it wasn’t that easy.

“A year after we met,” Elsie said, “Wendelin gave me a diamond. My folks were furious. We couldn’t get married. I was Lutheran. He was Catholic.”

Elsie returned the ring.

“Two weeks later, Wendelin returned with the ring,” she said. “He told me that he couldn’t live without me. He said, ‘Elsie, we can make it work.’”

Elsie’s parents disowned her when she and Wendelin were married at the Catholic parsonage in Long Prairie. That same year they bought a 120-acre farm.

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent Long Prairie, Minn. — Two empty chairs wait in the yard for Elsie Keller. The rural Long Prairie resident enjoys planting her garden each spring and keeps the chairs handy for the occasional break.

Oh, by the way, Elsie Keller is 92 years old.

“I have two chairs out there and I try to keep near one of them,” she said. “It didn’t used to be that way.”

Elsie Keller has been a longtime reader of The Land and recently sent a heart-felt letter to the magazine. A visit with her offers a glimpse into her life of farming with her husband Wendelin Keller and their children Lewellyn, Timothy, Karen, Russell, and Kimberly.

Elsie and Wendelin met at the Clotho dance hall in Todd County after Wendelin and a few of his fellow GIs had liberated Europe from Nazism.

“We danced all night,” Elsie said.

But Elsie’s story begins before that fateful night on the dance floor.

Elsie was a Schultz before she became a Keller.

The Schultz family, and others like them in the 1920s, spoke German at home. German was Elsie’s native tongue until she went to school No. 31 in Long Prairie township.English was the language of the school. There were no English as a Second Language classes. But there were caring adults.

By then we’d saved all but $2,000 for a new barn. Wendelin always said, ‘Try not to go into debt. But if you do, only go in up to your ankles.’”

Those first 11 years of marriage were both wonderful and extremely challenging. Wendelin and Elsie were blessed with three children, first Lewellyn, then Timothy, then Karen.

They worked well together and always talked things over. They had a

respectful and loving relationship and their family and farm prospered. But there were problems.

“Wendelin was injured in the war,” Elsie explained. “He had shrapnel in his shoulder, head, and brain. His headaches were so bad he would scream and tell me that he was going crazy. I would put ice on his head and hold him. He had 19 surgeries to remove the shrapnel. At night he would have nightmares about what he saw in the war.”

Wendelin saw his friends shot before his eyes. He nearly froze to

death with his buddies and he was one of the first soldiers to unlock the death camp doors. Because Wendelin was often disabled by pain or recovering from surgery, Elsie did much of the farm work.

“We started working with horses,” Elsie said. “When Karen was a baby and I was nursing her I could put her in a wooden fruit crate. I would drive the team and pick rocks and the baby would be right there. The two boys would walk alongside.”

At first, Elsie milked their 12 Holsteins by hand. There was no electricity. She’d separate the cream, put it into a can, and then put it in well water to cool. Then she’d feed the milk to the calves and pigs. She’d make breakfast for the children and then return to her chores.

“The VA (Veterans Affairs) would not help Wendelin or we could have hired somebody,” Elsie said. “They said that he did not need a pension because on a farm you have everything that you need.”

Family farm Nevertheless, Elsie, Wendelin and the children persevered. The farm prospered. A second silo, a farrowing barn and a new house were built.

“God helped us build our farm,” Elsie said.

After Karen was born, Elsie had surgery and was told she could have no more children. But when Karen was 17, Russell was born and then Kimberly.

“We were so blessed,” Elsie said.

“How we adored those latecomers.”

As he grew, Russell became a big help.

“He would get up at 4:45 a.m. and help me with the chores,” Elsie recalled. “He’d make sure they were almost done before he went for the bus. Sometimes he’d miss it and I’d

take him to school.”

The Kellers’ most profitable enterprise was feeder pigs. One time Elsie and Russell had the farrowing barn cleaned; but they had no gestating sows to put in it.

“I saw an ad in the paper for brood sows for sale,” Elsie said. “They were two weeks from farrrowing. Russell and I drove over there and bought 10 sows. Then we told Wendelin. Oh, he was mad! He said we had too much work already. But do you know what?

Those sows had ten babies per sow and we sold those feeders for $39 each. It was the best we ever did on pigs.

“In December Wendelin said, ‘Let’s go Christmas shopping in Alexandria.’ I thought that was a good idea because I hadn’t bought gifts for the kids. But he took me to a furrier where they made fur coats. He had one made for me. Oh, I loved him! He was such a good man.”

Not long after, tragedy struck. A few days before he was to start trade school for carpentry, Russell was swimming with friends. He dove into the water but didn’t come up. When his friends pulled him from the water, his neck was broken and he was paralyzed from the neck down.

“That was the worst day of our 57 years of marriage,” Elsie said. “We all cried and cried.”

But Russell was a Keller. With good medical care he learned to walk again. He graduated from North Dakota State University with degrees in business and accounting and went on to a successful career in financial services.

“It’s a beautiful creation,” Elsie said.

“If I could do it all over again I wouldn’t do anything different.” ❖

the beans are sprouted, explained Wubben.

“This later rolling eliminates an erosion problem from high winds and heavy rains. Plus you’ve had more time to pick rocks,” he said. “And, this later rolling helps seal in moisture in the dryness of summer. Yet you are keeping your soils open longer to absorb spring rains.”

Wubben intends to provide the CultiRoller in 10-inch widths for end rows, 14-inch for 22-inch wide rows and 22inch units for 30-inch rows. At this stage, he estimates roughly about $1,000 per row for the units and the added cost of the mounting bar.

“For a 24-row unit we’d be in the neighborhood of $22,000 to $25,000,” said Wubben.

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer WILLMAR, Minn. — A huge 24row, three-point mounted machine with 24 rolling wheels called a CultiRoller attracted attention at 2016 farm shows. The Culti-Roller compacts soils between the rows rather than the entire soil surface by more traditional land rollers.

The Culti-Roller was designed by farmer Milt Wubben of Clara City.

Wubben is a veteran row crop farmer with 33 years experience.

“I’ve never been a fan of land rollers because of the erosion problems they tend to stimulate. The idea came to me when planting soybeans in corn stubble,” Wubben said. “My trash wipers were windrowing the corn root balls and I was wondering what I could do to knock them down. I thought if I could replace the shanks on a regular cultivator, which I was no longer using, with a rolling drum device running between the rows, that might eliminate problems with root balls, even rocks and stalks.”

Wubben had a machine shop friend make a prototype, just a one-row unit to try out on an older cultivator bar.

“I made a round in my field,” Wubben recalled. “I liked what I saw. It was a 22-inch wide roller. It was doing everything that a full-width land roller does. So we made 18 rollers to fit my cultivator. We were very happy with the job it did and decided to crank out a few more units for other farmers to try.”

Tebben Enterprises, a long-time farm equipment manufacturing firm in Clara City, became the builder for Culti-Roller units. Wubben is making a few minor changes for units being manufactured for the new season. He’s adding more down pressure to make the units function even better.

“I think it’s everyone’s goal to use conservation,” Wubben said. “Nobody likes to see dirt blowing whether its mid-winter when fields are clean and wind is howling or especially after planting and a wind storm starts creating dust storm.

“The problem with the land roller for guys who run their fields right after planting is what happens if it rains before you roll your fields? When you get back on that field a few days later, you wonder about damage to that newly-sprouted cotyledon of those young soybean plants.”

Retiring Iowa farmer partners with eager rookie

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer Gary Fisher, 74-year-old farmer from Thor, Iowa, forged a remarkable partnership 15 years ago when Matt Siefker, a 26-year old Ohio farm kid, received an e-mail inviting him for an interview as a farm hand at the Fisher farm.

“We were truly blessed to have run into Matt and have things work out the way they have. I had seen his ad in a couple of farm papers. Yet until we met I had no idea the two people were the same. Yes, a perfect example of the Lord dealing in mysterious ways with his people,” said Fisher.

Siefker grew up on a northwest Ohio crop and dairy farm. He returned to the farm after earning a two-year degree from Ohio State University. But he could see the long-term prospects weren’t bright for the 70-cow dairy operating on mostly rented acres in a heavily industrialized area.

So Siefker expanded his horizons. He was aware of programs in Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota that link retiring and beginning farmers. He even put ads in Farm Journal, Successful Farming, Wallaces Farmer and other farm magazines. But with no responses he had decided to help his dad plant the 2001 spring crop, than go back to college to get a business degree.

Then everything changed with that e-mail from Fisher. Fisher’s son, who had farmed with his dad for five years, decided to expand his welding skills by opening a full-time welding shop. So Fisher was looking for help on the farm and decided to try Iowa

State University’s Farm On program. According to David Baker, farm transition specialist at ISU’s Beginning Farmer Center, the Farm On program has matched more than 80 beginning farmers with retirees since 1994.

Fisher’s interview with Siefker went well, but it almost never happened.

“I took a quick look at the info Matt had sent me and then threw it into a waste basket,” said Fisher.

“An Ohio farm kid would never pull up stakes and move to Iowa I thought.”

But Fisher’s son in-law picked it out of the waste basket and said, “What’s wrong with this one?”

Fisher didn’t know Siefker’s mind-set or his work ethic. He couldn’t imagine this young man driving 600 miles to the Fisher farm, do the interview, than drive the 600 miles back to his Ohio farm.

Fisher had narrowed the field to about 13 candidates and selected five for interviews.

“We called each with the same question: ‘Why do you want to farm?’” said Fisher. “When we called Matt in Ohio he said he was willing to drive all night to be at our farm tomorrow morning for our interview. So it was obvious this young man wanted to farm. He did that overnight drive. That morning we sat at the table across from one another. I told Matt that I don’t know if this will work but if you are willing to do a 90-day trial we’ll see how it works out.”

Field test A month later Siefker was in Iowa helping Fisher plant his 2001 crop, working on a salaried basis for three months to see “if their personalities clicked”.

“Those three months went good,” said Fisher. “I asked Matt what he thought. He said ‘I like it too.’”

“We were seeing that we could work together as a team. We communicated well with each other. We could relate to the same goals. Things just seemed to mesh between the two of us. Sharon and I could sense that Matt was a very religious person also and that was important,” said Fisher.

“I could sense quickly that Matt was very sincere,” added Sharon. “He was a 26-year old young man but See FISHER, pg. 13

“Matt was looking for a lady who didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t cuss and was very religious. He couldn’t find an Iowa girl that measured up so he ended up marrying a lady from the Ukraine,” said Fisher.

That came about through the ministry of his church which was doing mission work there. Siefker made several trips to the Ukraine, actually exploring farming in that country. In the process he met Oksana and they married.

“We have been truly blessed. Matt is a great gentleman, a strong Christian, and I think a super good farmer too,” said Fisher.

Family wasn’t chicken to start egg-laying farm up north There are many ways to feather your nest.

Some people take in work at home.

Others tackle extra hours, extra tasks, or have part-time jobs. And then there are entrepreneurs who put everything on the line, which is what Lucie B. Amundsen and her family did not long ago. And in the new book, “Locally Laid,” it almost put egg on their faces.

The moment definitely was not as romantic as Lucie Amundsen had anticipated.

When her husband, Jason, took her on a date so they could “talk… about something,” she never figured it would be chickens. Specifically, commercial egg production. As in, a farm.

With neither of them being particularly handy, (and Amundsen smarting over an unwanted move from her dream home in Minneapolis to an odd rental in Duluth), it seemed like a disastrous idea. They didn’t really know

Author Lucie B. Amundsen much about chickens, and even less about raising them on pasture. After a chilly few days of tears, frowns and silence, the idea was mutually tabled until a lost job and a family disaster changed every clucking plan. Chickens, to Amundsen’s chagrin, were in her future.

Finding the farm was the easy part.

slightly fewer than 2,000 “young lady hens.” Procuring said hens was a little more difficult until he found a man in Iowa who agreed to raise the hens to an almost-laying age and deliver them to northern Minnesota. By the spring of 2012, the Amundsens were in business.

It didn’t take long for things to go fowl.

The Amundsens encountered improper paperwork, government regulations, dead chickens, bad weather, inadequate equipment and exhaustion.

The scenario took its toll on the chickens, the farm and the Amundsens, who both began to suffer health issues from stress. Despite support from family and friends, enthusiasm from customers and a contest that brought a city together, Amundsen says she was “a prairie train wreck.”

“But there was nothing to do,” she says, “other than to ride through our rocky startup.”

Where does your food come from?

That’s a basic question asked in “Locally Laid” and the answer may be different than it was even a few decades ago. In addition to sharing a story that’s funny and endearing,

author Lucie B. Amundsen explains where your food comes from while also laying down a few brutal truths about what’s for breakfast.

For a consumer, that could cause scrambled thoughts, especially if you can’t tolerate too much information.

Amundsen is honest about the bad as well as the good — the latter of which she was slow to realize. And yes, there’s a happy ending. The surprise is that this is also a business tale with all the inherent frustrations, beautiful moments, work-arounds and triumphs of entrepreneurship.

And, of course, this tale is a charmer because of the chickens.

So who should read this book? Well, anyone who eats, first of all, and anybody who’s ever loved a feathered friend. Farmers, foodies and fans of a good story will also want to bring “Locally Laid” home to roost.

Few people get to say that and have it be true for an entire lifetime. It womps when someone can make that happen even though those ensuing farm-related conversations can make a farmer’s wife or mother glaze over like a convenience store donut.

At least that kind of glaze doesn’t have any calories. And that womps, too.

Milk prices continue to lag, futures hold little promise

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending May 6.

The April Federal order benchmark Class III milk price was announced by U.S. Department of Agriculture at $13.63 per hundredweight, down 11 cents from March; $2.18 below April 2015; but 92 cents above California’s comparable 4b milk price. It is the lowest Class III price since January 2011 and equates to about $1.17 per gallon. This is down a penny from March and compares to $1.36 a year ago. The four-month Class III aver-

age stands at $13.72 which is down from $15.75 at this time a year ago and compares to a generous $23.04 in 2014.

Class III futures don’t portend much hope ahead. The May contract was trading late Friday morning at $12.87; June, $12.91; July, $13.31; August, $13.93; and September was at $14.58. The peak for the year was only $14.85 in December.

The April Class IV price is $12.68 which is down 6 cents from March, 83 cents below a year ago, and the lowest April

Class IV since 2009’s $9.82. The four-month average, at $13.06, is down from $13.59 a year ago and $23.19 in 2014.

California’s April 4b cheese milk price is $12.71/ cwt. which is down 53 cents from March, $1.51 below a year ago, and the lowest 4b price since January 2011’s $12.49. The 4b price average stands at $13.02, down from $13.93 a year ago and $21.34 in 2014.

■ The May 3 Global Dairy Trade auction reversed direction on April 19 following its biggest gain since December 1, 2015. The weighted average for all products offered slipped 1.4 percent after jumping 3.8 percent last time and gaining 1.2 percent on April 5 dampening hopes of a recovery.

Rennet casein led the gains, up 3.5 percent, following a 7.5 percent upshot last time. Cheddar cheese was up 1.8 percent after dropping 3.9 percent last time. Whole milk powder inched 0.7 percent higher after jumping 7.5 percent last time.

Butter and buttermilk powder led the losses, both down 5.5 percent, after rising 2.0 and 2.4 percent respectively last time. Skim milk powder was down 3.6 percent after inching up 0.3 percent on April 19.

Lactose followed, down 2.7 percent, after an 8.0 percent gain last time. Anhydrous milkfat was off 1.6 percent, following a 1.6 percent increase last time.

FC Stone reported the average GDT butter price equated to about $1.18 per pound U.S. Contrast that to CME butter which closed May 6 at $2.05 per pound. Cash butter closed the week at $2.05 per pound, down 7 cents but still 6.5 cents above a year ago, with three cars trading hands on the week at the CME. Dairy Market News reports that Central butter demand is “generally unchanged from year ago patterns, according to manufacturers. Food service interest is steady. Retail demand is trending sideways. Recent features at consumer outlets, offering bundled pricing on one-pound packages, have

helped clear retailer inventories brought in prior to the spring holidays.

Butter production is steady to lower as additional cream volumes clear to Class II production. Butter stocks are building steadily, although most manufacturers are holding those stocks with confidence.”

“Western butter manufacturers are able to get plenty of cream to meet current needs,” Dairy Market News goes on to say. “However, a bit more cream is starting to move into Class II channels and taking a little of the pressure off the churns. Manufacturers say butter production and sales are good for this time of year. Inventories continue to build seasonally.”

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed May 6 at 77.75 cents per pound which is up 2.25 cents on the week but 17.25 cents below a year ago on 14 cars sold this week.

■ A lower all-milk price slid the latest milk feed price ratio downwards. The March ratio is 2.08, down from 2.15 in February; but up from 2.01 in March 2015 according to the USDA’s latest Ag Prices report. The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a ration of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. Nonfat dry milk production totaled 171.6 million pounds in March which is up an eye-catching 22.4 percent from February, 5.1 percent below a year ago, with year-to-date output at 448.9 million pounds, down 10.1 percent. Skim milk powder, at 40.6 million pounds, was up 2.8 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date output at 132.0 million pounds (up 15.9 percent from 2015). The report also showed March nonfat dry milk stocks at 231.9 million pounds, up 7.1 percent from February but 7.5 percent below those a year ago.

■ Cooperatives Working Together accepted seven requests for export assistance this week to sell 1.232 million pounds of cheese and 130,073 pounds of whole milk powder to customers in Asia, Central America and Oceania.

The sales raised CWT’s year-to-date exports to 18.34 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 7.7 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 20.3 million pounds of whole milk powder to 16 countries on five continents.

■ Speaking of global trade, the May 4 Daily Dairy Report says lower prices kept milk powder moving in March.

“Exporters shipped 90.8 million pounds of nonfat dry milk abroad, 25 percent less than the prior year and 6.8 percent less than in February on a daily average basis. Shipments averaged 85.6 cents per pound, down from 92.8 cents in February and $1.226 a year ago.”

The Daily Dairy Report also reports that “U.S. cheese and butter exports remained depressed in March. At 56.2 million pounds, U.S. cheese and curd exports were 2.2 percent lower than daily average exports in February and 19.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Exports of butter and milkfat in March totaled just 7.3 million pounds, down 24.1 percent from February.”

The good news is that butter and milkfat exports were 25 percent greater than March 2015 volumes, according to the Daily Dairy Report, but warned “Exports, however, were dwarfed by imports. March imports of butter and milkfat totaled 14.4 million pounds. U.S. butter imports reached their highest monthly volume since

The March U.S. average all-milk price was $15.30 per cwt. which is down 40 cents from February, $1.30 below March 2015, and the lowest level since May 2010. California saw an allmilk average of $14.13, while Wisconsin’s was at $15.80.

March corn averaged $3.57 per bushel, unchanged from February and 24 cents per bushel below March 2015.

Soybeans averaged $8.56 per bushel, up a nickel from February, but $1.29 per bushel below March 2015. Alfalfa hay averaged $144 per ton, up $2 from February, but $25 per ton below March 2015.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger, the March cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $80/cwt. which is up $2.50/cwt. from February, $34 below March 2015, but compares to the 2011 base average of $71.60/cwt.

Prices received for milk cows averaged $1,820 per head which is down $10 from February, $150 below March 2015, but $400 above the 2011 base price.

■ USDA data pegged March milk production at 18.4 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from March 2015. The mostly bearish Dairy Products report shows where it went.

March cheese output totaled a whopping 1.03 billion pounds, up 7.8 percent from February, 1.8 percent above March 2015, and put year-to-date output at 2.99 billion pounds, which is up 2.9 percent from a year ago.

Italian cheese output hit 459.1 million pounds which is up 8.3 percent from February, up 4.3 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date at 1.3 billion pounds (up 4.4 percent). Mozzarella, at 359.3 million pounds, was up 4.8 percent from a year ago and yearto-date totaled 1.0 billion pounds (up 4.0 percent).

Total American-type cheese production, at 399.4 million pounds, was up 8.9 percent from February. This is up 0.9 percent from a year ago, with yearto-date output at 1.2 billion pounds, up 1.0 percent. Cheddar output hit 284.5 million pounds which is up 0.9 percent from a year ago; with year-to-date at 838.5 million pounds, down 0.9 percent.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending May 6.

CORN — Corn struggled this week as weather conditions for U.S. planting improved and Brazil’s weather looked wetter. The concern in Brazil is over its second or safrinha corn crop and how dry growing conditions will affect the yield.

Corn began the week on a steady note before posting a key reversal lower on May 3 when the U.S. dollar turned higher and corn prices slid lower the remainder of the week. While trading briefly below the 50 and 100-day moving averages, July PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. corn recovered going into the St. Paul weekend to only close 14.25 cents lower for the week at $3.77.5 per bushel. December corn was down 10.5 cents for the week at $3.84.75 per bushel. Funds had sold 6,000 corn contracts of their net long, according to the May 3 Commitment of Traders report. With good growing weather in the forecasts, it wouldn’t be hard to expect another week of lower prices. The May 10 U.S. Department of Agriculture monthly crop report balance sheets and weekly crop progress report will provide price direction as well.

Weekly old crop export sales at 30.3 million bushels were below expectations; but kept the gap between this and last year’s sales at 8 percent behind. We need 12.5 million bushels of sales per week to hit the USDA forecast of 1.65 billion bushels. New crop sales were 2.4 million bushels, bringing total new crop commitments to 102 million

The past several weeks have turned into a study of contrast in the cattle and hog markets. Cattle have dropped in price in both cash and futures, while the hogs have done just the opposite and rallied in both cash and futures. Demand appears to be one of the main factors in the result of this type of activity during this period.

The cattle market has seen an increase in volatility during the past few weeks as the market has made a rather large drop in price in both cash and futures. The beef cutout has also been under a lot of pressure which has influenced the packers into being more cautious in the aggressiveness in bidJOE TEALE ding for live inventory. The cattle herd is expanding, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture recent reports. This increase will likely provide enough beef to meet the current demand which continues to contract.

Another factor has been the weights of cattle which has produced more tonnage than last year. This also helped to offset the lack of numbers.

With competitive meats still at a disparity to beef, it would seem any major rallies at this time are not very likely. However the market will tend to get oversold from time to time which should produce rallies to relieve the pressure on prices. Unless demand picks up in the weeks ahead, the trend will most

Agricultural commodities tracked in the Bloomberg sub index have had their strongest April rally in 20 years. The rally has surprised most experts since the United States and world supply and demand picture show little worry of exhausting our carryover of most commodities.

So what conditions have changed in the last several months to inspire the recent volatility in corn and soybean prices? South America and the United States are the world leaders in soybean production and Asia is the primary destination for most of the exports.

More than 40 percent of the U.S. 2016 supply of soybeans will be exported. In short, soybeans are influenced much more by global factors than other commodities which are primarily affected by regional supply and demand conditions. Soybean price fluctuations may help us understand why many commodities are showing recent volatility. Let’s look at what is going on in the world that could be influencing the prices.

U.S. dollar: Since December of 2016, the dollar has significantly weakened against other currencies.

Argentine loading delays benefit U.S. bean exports

Pork price rally on now cold storage could become a factor in the weeks ahead. If these cold storage numbers continue to increase, this could slow the advance of hog prices or even end the current uptrend in the price of hogs.

Seasonally, a spring rally is a normal occurrence and this current rally no exception. The normal extent of these seasonal rallies usually lasts into the late spring to early summer months. The only caveat to this scenario would be a change in the current demand for pork or an increase in the supply of hogs which cause and end to the current upswing in prices.

Therefore, producers should keep track of market conditions and protect inventories as needed. ❖

April last year. China is now expected to auction 5 mmt of soybeans out of its reserves. China is also expecting its soybean acreage to be up 400,000 hectares this year as the government pushes for more bean acreage at expense of corn acreage. New crop sales were 15.8 million bushels. Total new crop commitments are 119.7 million bushels compared to 158.9 million bushels at this time last year.

OUTLOOK: While the soybean recovery on May 6 allowed soybeans to post a weekly gain, the same advice in the corn market can be applied to soybeans as well. Support in the July contract is spied at $10.02.25, then $9.86.25 per bushel with resistance at 10. 43.75 per bushel. ❖

Rally may help reduce risk WACHTLER, from pg. 22 and the weakening of the dollar makes commodities cheaper for importers.

The Federal Reserve has taken a softer stance on interest rate increases and the market has viewed this as bearish for the U.S. dollar. Commodities and the U.S. dollar have traditionally shown a very strong inverse correlation. The year-to-date dollar index compared to the Commodity Research Bureau index shows the same tendency.

Foreign Monetary Stimulus: The world’s second largest economy, China, is expanding credit through their banking system at unprecedented rates. At different times in China, the expansion of credit has led to speculation in their housing market and stock markets. The latest beneficiary for the stimulus has been commodities and soybeans are a very popular commodity to trade in China.

Japan is the world’s third largest economy. Bank of Japan has been buying equities and bonds directly in the market while holding their interest rates in negative territory. Investors are nervously watching Japan’s efforts and starting to exit their commodity short positions because of their extreme measures to help spark inflation. Soybeans, oil, and metals that are traded freely around the world have benefited the most from the monetary efforts of Central Bankers.

Weather: El Niño has led to good growing conditions for the United States, but has adversely affected weather in parts of India and Oceania.

Forecasts now call for the oscillation to

a La Niña event where the ocean temperatures cool. This often leads to events such as the current dryness Brazil is experiencing. The La Niña has the potential to affect the U.S. growing season as well. The weather forecast means a less bearish view on grains than the traders had just a few short months ago.

Closer to Home: The unexpected rally in grain pricing demonstrates how hard it is to predict where the markets are going. It will be even tougher to predict how the global influences such as weather and policies end up affecting the markets in the future. There is an old saying used by grain traders, “only trust a rally that is led by demand,” which might be sage advice for the current market.

The unexpected rally may not lead to large profits for farmers, but does present a very good opportunity to take some risk off the table. For most of the producers I work with, taking risk off the table right now is more important than trying to get the last few dollars of profit from the markets.

If you believe this rally might last, options can help reduce some price risk while leaving your upside open. A futures hedge or hedge to arrive contract can leave your basis open and capture some of the upside in a stronger basis, if the supply starts to tighten due to weather.

The hog market has been rallying into the last weeks of April with cash prices now exceeding $70 lean levels not seen for months. Hogs represent the demand side of the supply/ demand issue in comparison to the cattle, where the demand for pork has been very good. This despite the fact the export market has slowed due to the strong U.S. dollar vs. other foreign currencies.

Hog numbers have not been burdensome. However, the supply of pork in

crush at 166.3 million bushels, the second biggest crush for this month on record.

Weekly export sales were 30 million bushels for old crop and well above trade estimates. This year’s sales are 7 percent behind last year. The USDA is projecting total exports this year of 1.705 billion bushel. U.S. exports have benefitted from loading delays in Argentina due to rain. Argentina’s bean harvest is estimated at 41.5 percent complete vs. 69 percent complete last year at this time. The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange left its bean production forecast at 56 mmt compared to the last USDA outlook for 59 mmt. In April Brazil exported a record 10.1 mmt of soybeans, up 54 percent from

in the United States.

With the crop going in quickly, the critical pollination period for the majority of the corn crop may miss hot, dry conditions which could cut the corn yield.

OUTLOOK: This week was a wakeup call that prices may have further downside. Support in the July contract comes in at $3.70, then the $3.65 to $3.60 area. First resistance is at $3.83.5 per bushel, the 10-day moving average, followed by $3.86 the 200-day moving average. Protecting the downside through options, futures or cash sales or a combination of all of the above is worth considering.

SOYBEANS — The soybean market had several influential factors this week including the U.S. dollar index, concerns over wet conditions’ effect on Argentina’s soybean crop production and export capability, and fund activity. July soybeans posted a key reversal lower on May 5, but a recovery on May 6 kept them in the black for the week. July beans were up a nickel for the week, closing at $10.34.75 per bushel. November beans rallied 14.25 cents to settle at $10.22 per bushel.

Early in the week, Argentina’s Climate and Water Institute projected Argentina’s bean crop losses at 9 mmt, cutting the crop to just 51 mmt. Many trade estimates run in the 5 mmt loss area. The U.S. dollar index seemed to find a bottom in the first half of the week and rebounded higher into the weekend.

For May 8, planting is anticipated in the 17-21 percent range vs. 16 percent on average. The March Fats and Oils report from the USDA pegged bean

Weekly ethanol production was down 4,000 barrels per day to 923,000 bpd.

Ethanol stocks were up 600,000 million barrels to 22.2 million barrels. The March Grain Crushings report showed ethanol production at 431 million bushels, down 1.6 percent from last year.

Sorghum used for ethanol was thought to have replaced some corn usage.

Corn planting as of May 1 was 45 percent complete — well ahead of the 30 percent average. For May 8, planting is expected to hit 60 percent to 65 percent complete vs. the five-year average of 57 percent complete. Emergence as of May 1 was 13 percent vs. the average of 8 percent.

The situation in Brazil concerning the safrinha corn crop is worthy of consideration. AgRural dropped its estimate from 54.6 million metric tons to 48.9 mmt. Conab is at 57.1 mmt. If AgRural is correct, Brazil’s total corn crop could be as low as 76.5 mmt. The last USDA figure was 84 mmt.

Argentina’s corn harvest has been slow due to wet conditions and their focus has turned to soybean harvest.

China expects its corn acres to fall this year for the first time in 13 years. They are expecting a decrease of 4 percent or 3.29 million acres from 91.4 million planted acres last year.

The outlook for the transition from El Niño to a weak La Niña is somewhere between July and August. The faster the sea surface temperatures drop, the more likely we are to see hot conditions

im’s Apple Farm, also known as Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store, is a popular stop for soda pop junkies and candy lovers of all ages.

The big yellow barn on Highway 169 is in Jordan, Minn. Walk into the store and your eyes are overwhelmed by candy of all colors, puzzles of all sizes and the “World’s Largest Selection” of soda pop in glass bottles.

Robert Wagner manages the shop. His dad is Jim Wagner, the patriarch and baker of Jim’s Apple Farm. Jim is known for his pies.

“He’s here every day — 70 hours a week,” said Robert, but rest assured he has lots of help.

The big yellow barn started as a small roadside stand and celebrates its 38th season this year.

Candy was added about 10 years ago. Robert said there were very bad storms that year. His daughter started selling candy.

“We realized we needed to diversify,” said Robert.

Polka music plays while customers browse the store. Many grandparents take their grandchildren and get excited about the old-fashioned candy they remember as kids. Saltwater taffy and licorice comes in all flavors. All kinds of lollipops and chocolates too. The grandchildren are often attracted to the latest novelties.

“Pop is big. Over 1,000 different sodas,” said Robert. “Whatever you want to get, 10 cases or one bottle.”

Many come for the unusual root beers.

One customer recommended the butterscotch flavors. He and his wife even have tried bacon and sweet corn flavored pop on their stops.

Visitors also find lots of made in Minnesota products such as soup mixes, sauces and honey. Fudge comes from right up the road and fruit cake from Belle Plaine.

Jim’s Apple Farm still has four small orchards and sells apples. They grow pumpkins, squash and gourds too. Come harvest, bins in the parking lot are filled with their pumpkins and squash.

Robert is known to many customers for his red suspenders and he has been immortalized in a mural that his wife painted on the outside of the store. While he couldn’t choose a favorite candy, he expressed a weakness for chocolate.

As to the popularity of the big yellow barn, “I’m flabbergasted,” Robert said.

Jim’s Apple Farm, AKA Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store, opens May 26. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, even holidays.

The store will remain open through Thanksgiving weekend.
