The U.S. Department of Agriculture informed a Penn State University plant pathologist that the “white button mushroom” he developed by removing some of its genetic material is not a genetically modified organism. This was not some bureaucratic hair-splitting by some little-known government agency. In fact, it was just the opposite. This is a hair-on-fire decision that will remake food as we know it.

And yes, just like you learned in elementary school, it all goes back to fungi.

This little white mushroom however, is unlike any mushroom the world has ever seen. Through a geneediting process known as CRISPR-Cas9, Penn State researcher Yinong Yang made “small deletions in a specific gene” so the mushroom “stops production of a specific enzyme that causes mushrooms to brown.”

(Faithful readers may recall two columns on potential CRISPR wins and woes in late 2015.)

The result, explained Penn State after USDA’s official blessing, is “a mushroom with longer shelf life that resists blemishes caused by handling or mechanical harvesting — but without DNA from a foreign organism.”

And that’s the difference, says USDA. Yang didn’t add genetic material to the mushroom from a “foreign organism such as bacteria or other plant species.” Instead, he removed the fraction of the mushroom’s own genetic material which causes unsightly browning to create his new, non-GMO mushroom.

That’s possible because of CRISPR — short for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats.” This “tool” can focus on an exact spot on the genome to “delete or replace specific DNA pieces, thereby promoting or disabling certain traits.”

This ability raises a paradox. Is the mushroom, as USDA says, an unregulated, non-GMO food because it contains less of its own DNA and no added DNA? Or is it a different kind of Frankenfood (Frankenfungi?) as GMO critics say; because, in fact, its DNA has been altered?

Yang, the mushroom’s developer, welcomes that debate but prefers it to be less a food fight and more a food “goal” — a clear indication of what he (and most of the scientific farm and food community) would like to see.

“There’s too much divisiveness and hostility between pro- and anti-GMO camps,” he offered in a mid-April, Penn State press release. “I hope development of the new technology will facilitate rational and productive dialogue… with a common goal to achieve food safety, food security, and agricultural and environmental sustainability.”

Also, the blog notes, be on the lookout for “hens that produce only female offspring [that] would do away with the need to euthanize male chicks.”

But that’s just the tip of the CRISPR iceberg. Toss drug research — especially gene therapies for cancer treatment — into the discussion and CRISPR may be the biggest, life-changing tool to hit mankind since the invention of the wheel.

Where will this new wheel take us?

Can its plant and animal transforming magic serve both today’s industrial Big Ag and tomorrow’s sustainable ag?

Will the market’s singular drive toward short-term profit short-circuit the long-term complexity of our global ecology?

Is there a moral line that CRISPR should never cross? If so, where?

Answers to these tough questions — there will be many more — can’t come from government regulators like USDA. They need to come from you and me. We should talk.

Horizontal bunkers big sellers for silo company

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer LAKE LILLIAN, Minn. — Hanson Silo Company built its reputation by going vertical. But not so today. Horizontal bunkers for silage, corn, soybeans and other products are the market trend for the Lake Lillian enter- Mike Hanson prise.

Horizontal structures are driving the market these days, said Mike Hanson, director of business development for Hanson Silo Company.

“We put in a new precast concrete plant last year.

It’s winterized, so we have more capacity to do more custom jobs,” he said. “We’re also building insulated concrete wall panels which have found good markets in turkey barns and some dairy facilities. We can get up to R27 values. It’s a 10-inch panel with 3inch concrete on each side and a 4-inch insulation center core.”

Hanson Silo is celebrating 100 years in business in June. The company was founded by Emil Hanson in 1916 on the family farmstead in rural Lake Lillian. Emil was unhappy with the poorly constructed silos so he set out to build his own using sand from the shores of Lake Kandiyohi as a base for his concrete mix. Four generations later, the company is still owned and operated by the Hanson family: Gregg and his sons Matthew and Michael.

Looking ahead: If corn markets continue weak so elevators and farm bins still hold much of the 2015 crop, what sort of chaos does the industry potentially face to accommodate the 2016 harvest?

That logic certainly worked for Clara City farmer Kyle Petersen in Chippewa County.

“Everything is big, and perhaps getting bigger.

Plus, if wet weather shuts us down during harvest, I wanted a shop big enough for two work areas: one for working on beet harvesting equipment, the other for cleaning up the combine.”

He and John Suter, farming partner and brotherin-law, satisfied their ambition. An 80-foot by 140foot shop with 20-foot ceilings now occupies the south end of Petersen Farms home base. Open space around the building allow semi-trucks, 24-row planters and all to easily drive into the shop area. All three of the big shop doors are located on the south side. The east side is employee parking with a single walk-through entry. Immediately inside are individual foot lockers for jackets, boots and gear. The east side parking keeps vehicles cooler because they're in the afternoon shade. Getting into a cool vehicle after a hot day in the field made good sense, thought Petersen.

What guided his thinking on shop size?

“I wanted three work stations,” said Petersen, “Enough space so three to four people could be working on different machines simultaneously. In today’s world it sometimes takes time to get parts, so if a particular piece of equipment has to set for a few days it wouldn’t be in the way.”

Petersen, age 48, is a fourth-generation farmer and making plans for that fifth generation motivated his logic.

“I figured both my sons were coming back into the farming business and I wanted a good place for them

Modern farm shops feature in-floor heat these days, but not this one.

“We were looking at probably $50,000 more to do floor heat,” reasoned Petersen. “If you keep your shop at 60 degrees during the winter, the floor is never cold.”

Four ceiling-mounted, thermostat controlled space heaters quickly reheat the shop if needed.

Three south-facing big doors include an 18-foot by 40-foot Schweiss lift-strap door providing quick

access for big combines with corn heads intact.

Machinery shop Sitting at the west end of the wash bay is a sizeable yellow machine called a jib crane. This rig easily lifts entire tractor engines and most any other piece of equipment. Welders and steel cutting equipment are located in a smaller section separate from the main shop floor.

If tools need to be taken to the field for a quick fix, there’s a tool bench at floor level with numerous wrenches, screw drivers, hammers, etc. However, three tool carts on roller wheels provide quick access to wherever they are needed inside the shop. Tools from these three units stay precisely with each cart.

A parts room for those daily needed parts is at floor level on the north side of the shop. Upstairs is the parts room for infrequently needed parts. This upstairs parts room is totally enclosed to keep dust from gathering. An overhead door opens into the upstairs so a fork lift conveniently lifts boxes of parts into this upstairs area.

Also upstairs are two wall-mounted charts. One displays dates and model number of every filter change on every tractor, truck and other engines.

You’ll find more of what you don’t want to do than what you want to do. For instance, I fastened light fixtures tight to the ceiling. If left hanging, they’re collecting dust and dirt.

Also, I didn’t want power lines running sideways on the walls. Everything is vertical, straight up and down. All my air lines are in 4-inch tile under the concrete floor. That kept everything off the walls.

“We put this shop up in 2011, the year the Government permitted a 100 percent write off on buildings. So it was a convenient business decision.

Plus the fact that we had simply outgrown our older shop.”

May 11 Joan Lee can see the finish line for the 2016 planting season, but the pesky rain has stopped her so far from crossing it. When The Land spoke with Lee the planter was getting a break. With rain the past two days including a half inch on May 11, “It’s going to take a couple of days at least to dry out again,” she said.

Lee has only got 33 acres of organic soybeans to get in. This is a big change in planting dates compared to last year when she put the first soybeans in on May 20. Minnesota weather is always unpredictable and with a chance of snow in the forecast planting is on hold. The “next few days will be cool and wet,” Lee reported.

That is in contrast to last week’s fairly nice weather.

This year has gone well so far with “nothing major break-down wise,” said Lee. While the rain has caused a break in planting it was also a welcomed sight.

“We can definitely use the rain,” Lee said.

Once field conditions improve, Lee believes that it’s only going to take a day to finish planting.

With a halt in planting, Lee’s husband Mark has been sharpening the knives on the chopper. Haying time will be here in no time. Lee expects to start toward the end of May. The first crop will be chopped with some small bales too. Lee likes what she sees in the field.

“It looks like we haven’t had any winter kill,” she said.

The planting season is almost complete for Lee, a much different story compared to last year. Lee is looking ahead with hope for a great finish to planting and a strong growing season.

“We were really starting to go,” said Andy Pulk. He was pleased with the amount of planting that he was able to get done, and then the rain came. Pulk on May 11 reported that while only a little rain has fallen it was enough to stop planting. “They have the s-word (snow) in the forecast,” Pulk said.

With highs only expected to be in the low 50s for the next few days coupled with some lingering showers and a chance of snow, planting will be on hold for a couple of days. Though “this is a perfect rain to get the seed germinated.” Pulk is grateful for the rain but he’s also got his “fingers crossed that it knows when to stop.”

Last week it was a far different story in the field for Pulk. “A week ago Monday we started doing some tillage.” Then “got rolling pretty good on Wednesday.”

Pulk was able to finish planting wheat on May 8 and started corn that same day. Pulk is currently halfway done with planting corn. The temperatures topped off at a blistering 94 degrees last week, it was “hot and dry.”

Pulk is hopeful that he should be back to planting by May 14 and starting soybeans sometime the following week. Pulk is “getting close to crunch time for corn seeding.” He usually finishes corn by May 20 and Pulk is optimistic he’ll be finished by then.

The “ground conditions are beautiful, some of the best we’ve ever seen.” If the rain would stay away and the sun and heat come back, this growing season would off to a fantastic start.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa May 11 Rain has been abundant in Kent Moser’s neck of the woods.

Moser reported that in the last two weeks “we’ve had 2 to 3 inches of rain.” All that rain meant that some farmers in the area were “planting in wet dirt,” he said. Moser himself has seen wet holes this spring that haven’t been seen in three years. “We do not need the moisture,” Moser said.

There was a small window from May 4 to 7 that was without rain and allowed a lot of crops to be planted. As for corn, “I’d say overall 75 percent is planted.” Soybeans are a different story. “Hardly anyone has started on beans,” Moser said.

On Moser’s family farm they’re 90 percent done with corn. There’s a little bit of beans to plant. “Last year we were done by now,” he said.

This year Moser is concerned with “losing top end yield potential on corn” by planting this late. “It’s time to get it in,” he said.

The next week’s forecast is average to below average temperatures. Moser, as a seed dealer, is looking at what that means for his family’s farming operation and his customers. It may mean changing to an earlier variety corn or if there’s a field that is very wet it may mean switching to planting soybeans in that field. Moser is hopeful the weather will cooperate to get the seed in the ground soon.

“Tomorrow looks like a nice drying day,” he said.

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

May 11 “We are pretty much done,” said John Nielsen. The rain had perfect timing. The rain fell May 9 and 10, with over an inch of rain in total.

Nielsen “finished beans on Saturday evening.” Just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day with his wife Sue. “We didn’t work too much on Sunday (Mother’s Day).”

The farming operation wouldn’t be possible “without her working in town, helping on the farm, keeping insurance — she was a huge help.” With the crops in, it was a nice day to spend with family.”

The planting now complete, Nielsen said he was pleased with how it went this year.

“Everything was next thing to perfect,” he reported.

Field conditions were “above average.” Since finishing in the field Nielsen has collected seed boxes from customers and is working on planting 800 trees on some of his land to “make it look nice.”

Nielsen’s only concern is that it’s going to be cold through Sunday, with lows in the 30s at night.

“We got to get through the rest of this week with not-so-ideal temperatures.”

The warmer temperatures a week ago “really perked up the corn,” he said. Now those temperatures need to return to really give the crops a good boost.

Farm shop houses wash bay, office, full kitchen

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor Farm work is messy, equipment is big and technology is a necessity.

These thoughts were top of mind when the Haubrich family designed and built their farm shop on Haubrich Family Farms near Danube, Minn.

The dream shop began five years ago when the family farm business expanded from Mike and Suzy Haubrich to include their three grown sons: Matt, Greg and Dan Haubrich.

“The big storage. That’s what we really needed,” said Matt.

First they chose the spot for their steel machine shed. They displaced Suzy’s garden, but they needed a place where trucks could pull in and turn around and where they could see the grain loading area. They planned for

at least 10 years out as trucks and implements change and continue to get bigger.

“Spend a lot of time with logistics,” said Mike. “Out here you have to adjust for the future.”

Besides a large machine shed and wash bay, the operation required a farm office where they could work and meet as a family. Mike and Matt sell seed for NorthStar Genetics so they meet with clients there. And Mike is a director of Co-op Country Farmers Elevator.

The Haubrichs grow corn, beans, peas, wheat and alfalfa on their acreage. They also raise lamb for food and fiber, as well as breeding stock.

With a smile, Mike calls the enterprise a “runaway FFA project.”

The shop, completed this spring, allowed the guys to shower and wash their boots out there. If they needed a file, they could run in and grab it easily. The concrete floor has in-floor or radiant heat with thermostat controls for different spaces. Come summer, the air conditioning will kick in.

“We have meetings here and go over farm plans,” said Dan, who is a certified crop advisor for Centrol and lives in Benson, Minn.

When Suzy, a Renville County Master Gardener, was mowing the lawn she stopped in the shop for a cold drink instead of the house. Last fall, she washed cucumbers in the wash bay.

Her grandsons sometimes get off the bus and do their homework in the shop. There are four grandsons in all.

“It’s the family place to be,” said Suzy.

Details The office is set up to handle the modern technology used on most farms today. An office cabinet stores jackets, work gloves and caps. A large white board hangs on the wall to assist in planning and daily operations. File cabinets hold farm, crop and livestock files.

“We started from scratch. We totally customized it to what we felt would be best for our operation,” said Matt.

A full kitchen with a stove, refrigerator and microwave makes it convenient for Suzy to make lunch or supper for her family. The shop also has a full bathroom.

Finishing the shop office was a three year project led by Matt, who worked after hours to get the job done. He

designed and finished the 20 by 30 foot space — making the most of every square foot. He hired out the plumbing, electrical, cabinets and spray foam insulation. Still, he did a ton of work himself. He framed the office, drywalled, did all the trim work and installed light fixtures.

“After eating supper I’d come down here and put four hours in,” Matt said.

In 2015, Matt and his wife bought the neighboring farm site and moved their family of three children from Rockville. Matt had a corporate job in St. Cloud for 10 years before working for his dad in 2013. He commuted to the farm for the week.

The key to a functional shop is in the details. Since the building has a high ceiling, Matt got a bonus space that he made into a loft. The railing comes apart to haul up furniture. Thick walls and insulation make the office quiet and energy efficient. Through the windows, they can see the grain bins.

Matt repurposed many materials.

For instance, he is making a cork board from an old truck grill. He trimmed out the windows and an opening between the office and gathering space with black slate from an old pool table.

The wash bay is Mike’s favorite spot.

Matt mounted an old truck box on the wall to organize supplies and keep them dry. The hand wash sink is an old bar sink. Both the office and wash bay are equipped with central vacuum ports. The bay is also heated so they can thaw, wash and dry four-wheelers, trucks and equipment.

“One-hundred-thirty-seven years of a family farm. We’re not going to give that up. We’ve gone too far.”

After a long day of planting, the guys headed into the shop at 10:30 p.m.

“We drank a beer. Our eyes were all

A century farm settled in 1879, the Haubrichs were the Renville County Farm Family of the Year in 2004. As the fifth generation, the Haubrich sons are bringing their skills back to the farm. Matt has apprenticed with his dad and offers engineering, design and

Bluebird Recovery Project rebuilding population

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent MARSHALL, Minn. — On a warm evening in late May, Paul Rasmussen unscrewed a bluebird nesting box to check its contents. Four small bluebirds rested inside. He replaced the nest and moved on to another site.

Rasmussen is a volunteer in the Bluebird Recovery Program who monitors a trail of 14 sites in Camden State Park, south of Marshall. He has worked at Camden for 26 years and he started monitoring this bluebird trail when it was set up in 2006. He is now the Lyon County coordinator for the

Bluebird Recovery Project.

Rasmussen was already a birdman in 2006, building houses for wrens and martins. But he knew nothing of the bluebird. Then Loren Murphy and Keith Radel came along. They had permission to set up a bluebird trail at Camden.

Radel and Murphy are long-time volunteers for BBRP. Murphy has been a volunteer for over 25 years and carries a “Bluebird Helper” card. Radel came up with the idea of putting bluebird trails in state parks.

When setting up the trail at Camden in 2006, Rasmussen was assisted by Elizabeth Murray, who also worked at Camden at the time. As Rasmussen picked up the basics of caring for bluebirds from Murphy and Radel, he agreed to monitor the Camden trail.

“They taught me some things and if I had a question, I’d call them,” Rasmussen said.

This past year, the Camden trail fledged 58 birds. That’s a long way from the 185 fledged three years ago,

ing. It is mounted on rebar which is pounded two feet into the ground and wrapped with metal conduit. The conduit is sanded with steel wool and waxed.

“Nothing can climb up that,” Rasmussen said.

At least, nothing has been successful. Murphy said he has seen the evidence of raccoons who have climbed up but were unable to get into the box.

“They hear those baby birds and try to get to them,” Murphy said.

Cats are also a menace to birds’ nests. But one of the bluebird’s primary enemies is the wren. Rasmussen and Murphy both described how the highly territorial wrens will destroy eggs, throw young birds out of the nest, even dismantle the nest itself, emptying the grass and filling it with sticks to make it unusable.

All of this means placement of nesting boxes is very important.

“Pairs of boxes are set up about 500 feet apart to give them enough territory,” Rasmussen said. “They are placed facing trees, but about 300 feet away. Fledglings can fly that far when they leave the nest, but wrens don’t venture that far out.”

Bluebirds have another nesting competitor — the tree swallow. However, the two species can co-exist because swallows catch flying insects, while bluebirds perch and search the grass, taking insects on the ground. The nest boxes are set up in pairs, Rasmussen said, so that if a tree swallow takes one, there is always one remaining for a bluebird.

The Bluebird Recovery Project has a

history approaching 40 years. According to its website, it began as a committee of the Minneapolis Chapter of the National Audubon Society when Dick Peterson asked them for help with his bluebird work. According to the site, “Originally part of the Conservation Committee, BBRP eventually became financially independent, but still retained the non-profit status of the Audubon Chapter.”

Rasmussen said he spends about two-and-a-half hours a week monitoring his 14 sites. While his 58 birds are a small part of the flock, it all adds up.

According to the Bluebird Recovery Project website, monitors reported 17,057 bluebirds fledged in 2015.

Rasmussen works to bring his number of fledged birds back up to a hundred, but each bird contributes to the bluebird’s recovery.

“In the 1970s the bluebird was almost extinct [around Minnesota],” Murphy said. “Now we’ve brought them back to where you see bluebirds in almost every county in the state.”

Rice County, home to Murphy, is one of the most active in the BBRP. “In the last 10-15 years, we’ve raised more bluebirds than anywhere else,” Murphy said. “I’ve never seen so many as I saw in 2015.”

In the 193 sites he monitors, there were 1,394 eggs of which 1,260 hatched and 1,255 fledged.

Nesting trails None of this comes without time and effort. Murphy was out almost every day from mid-March to the first of September, driving approximately 10,000 miles during the season to monitor each of the sites on a weekly basis.

Keith Radel and Loren Murphy are responsible for many bluebird trails.

When Radel got the idea of putting nesting trails in state parks, Murphy helped him carry it out. They did many of them until it became impossible to get monitors to watch them.

“Keith and I went to every corner of the state, hitting the state parks,” Murphy said.

There had been some desire to help bluebirds. “(The parks) had ‘feel-good’ conservation. Groups like scouts and 4-H clubs put up many bluebird houses, and never looked at them again,” Murphy said. “Without monitors, you have nothing.”

What had been done to help the bluebird recover often didn’t achieve its purpose. Many of those nesting boxes were nailed to trees or put on fence posts — making them vulnerable to predators. The raccoon is one of the main predators.

To defeat the raccoons, Radel and Murphy were putting up Gilbertson houses, a model Rasmussen now makes. They were designed by Steve Gilbertson. The nesting box is an 8inch section of 4-inch round PVC with a 1-and-9/16th-inch entrance hole, too small for starlings to get in. The box is easily removed and replaced for check-

Paulson acknowledged every farm has high producing areas which might need more inputs or might need less. For low-producing areas, he searches for what can be done to better manage input costs while improving yields.

“We have farmers every day simply asking, ‘How can we improve our bottom line?’ With today’s technologies, we can provide some answers,” said Paulson.

He noted a surge of technology purchasing during the super cycle.

“Today, farmers aren’t so interested in buying new technology. But they are definitely interested in optimizing the technology they have already purchased.”

“Farmers and/or their suppliers have the tools available,” Paulson said. “But putting these tools to work is still lacking and that’s why education is vital. Farmers have their own questions on GPS accuracy; or accuracy of big rigs doing broadcast applications of lime and fertilizer on their fields. They’ll sometimes say to us, ‘Maybe I’m paying for something that I may not be getting.’

“Our job is showing them how things work properly in this somewhat complicated, but essential, balance of inputs according to the productivity of their soils. Variable rates are the buzz word these days and rightly so. Generating profits is always the goal — even more so when commodity prices are crunched but input costs aren’t,” said Paulson.

He indicated his firm is not yet into variable rate work with pesticides be that insecticides, fungicides or herbicides. But he wonders with new technologies now collecting vegetative indexes, would not a higher rate of fungicide be justified in those areas of a field with more foliage to cover?

“Today the challenge is mostly getting enough water applied with the products to provide good coverage over the entire leaf surface of the crop. But I’m certain down the road we’ll have technology that changes rates of insecticides and fungicides, on the go.

“I’m a big advocate of variable rate everything,” Paulson added. “Regardless of how uniform a field may look to the eye, there is always variability. We have the challenge of determining which technology maximizes the potential of each variable. That technology is close to ready. Once available, then it boils down to which of these technologies will be costeffective to our customers and in the process, providing an environmental favor to the entire landscape of their farming program.”

The precision of variable rates is a matter of reality and practicality.

“Most equipment we are working with is at least 60-feet wide, often 120-feet wide and wider. We talk about farming by the square foot, but that is just talk,” he said. “But you can certainly make your application maps for variable work even in one-acre increments. Soil types, elevations, different colors of soils are some of the clues that we use.

“Plus, we check actual yields from different portions of a field so we can then overlay these various factors.

We may have three, four, even five layers of input data to establish the application rates which then get correlated to your own yield data. From this we come up with zones within a field for a more precise determination of application rates. Working with our crop consultants or your local crop consultant is the nuts and bolts of making this all work properly.”

McPherson Crop Management scouting options for corn and soybean fields includes stand counts, early season diseases, weed scouting, herbicide recommendations, mid-season and late summer bugs and diseases, and yield checks.

Also available is the GreenSeeker Handheld Crop Sensor for assessing the vigor of a crop. Readings help make decisions regarding the amount of fertilizer to apply. The sensor emits brief bursts of red and infrared light, and then measures the amount of each type of light reflected back to the sensor. The sensor displays the measured value in terms of a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) reading. The higher the NDVI reading, the healthier the plant.

As NDVI readings are collected from throughout the field, another tool (called the Connected Farm Scout app on a smartphone or tablet) calculates fertilizer application rates and geo-references the location.

This logged data is then sent to www.connectedfarm.com so users can view the information online.

McPherson Crop Management works with AKER, a Winnebago firm which utilizes certified pilots for getting aerial images generated by drones. McPherson is also getting into fixed wing aircraft to photograph thousands of acres per day.

“For our own use, we have a compact quad helicopter for collecting photos in our own scouting work. We hire professional drone pilots and fixed wing pilots to do big scale contracted acres for us,” Paulson said.

Paulson also advocates for minimum tillage.

“Leaving soils buck naked all winter open to swirling winds is not a positive thing. I’m a promoter of cover crops, of minimum tillage, of doing things that are sustainable,” said Paulson. “Are you improving your farm land every day? Are you improving water quality? Those are the questions that get at sustainability of agriculture.”

The cost share rate for farmers planting cover crops is $25 per acre ($15 per acre for past cover crop users) and for farmers trying no-till or strip till is $10 per acre. Farmers using a nitrapyrin nitrification inhibitor when applying fall fertilizer can receive $3

Readers Retreat: ‘The Farmer Takes a Holiday’

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent It seems producers of farm commodities regularly face commodity prices which are below the cost of production.

The modern response to that unfortunate situation is to rely on government programs to help make up the difference. In the 1960s the National Farmers Organization took more radical action in an attempt to address the problem. NFO farm activists dumped their milk on the ground rather than deliver it to market for a price below the cost of production.

Everett E. Luoma’s book, “The Farmer Takes a Holiday,” is critical of the NFO’s action.

“Because the lack of control of the farmer was not so starkly evident to the more nearsighted of the farmers in 1964, the NFO holding action of that year did not go to the extremes of the 1932 farmers’ strike,” Luoma wrote in

his 1967 book subtitled The Story of the National Farmers’ Holiday Association and the Farmers’ Strike of 1932-1933.

Luoma contrasts the top down bureaucratic leadership of the 1960s NFO to the democratic grass roots nature of the 1930s National Holiday Association strikes.

Farmers in the 1930s were an ornery and independent lot and not particularly interested in what so-called leadership thought, according to Luoma. For example, while hundreds of Iowa farmers were blockading the highways and railways into Sioux City and even disarming the County Sheriff during August 1932; the titular head of the Farm Holiday Association, Milo Reno, wrote this in the New York Times: “The leaders in this movement invariably counsel obedience to the law and peaceful picketing. In fact, the use of moral suasion is a more convincing argument than force, not only among

Reno wrote this odd editorial, so disconnected from the farmers he claimed to lead, while the Battle of Council Bluffs was raging. During that battle, farmers were tear-gassed by the National Guard; but persisted in their effort to keep farm products out of the city and off the market. Some were arrested while blockading roads leading into Council Bluffs.

In a chapter titled “The Battle of Council Bluffs,” Luoma writes this: “Sheriff Lainson correctly analyzed the situation. Fearing a mass attack on the Council Bluffs jail, where a total of 66 farmers were held, he threw a machine gun barricade around the structure and brought in most of his deputies to resist any effort to deliver the prisoners. He said the guns were there to “kill people if we must.”

“Undeterred, on August 25, 1,000 angry farmers from different western Iowa counties invaded the city and besieged the jail. F. Raymond Snyder of Kingsley, Iowa, a leader in the movement, warned Sheriff Lainson that if the pickets were not freed the farmers would raid the jail and free them.

Forty-three of the men were promptly released on $100 bond each and the others were liberated on appeal bonds.”

The definition of moral suasion may differ from person to person, it seems.

Everett Luoma’s book is both an astute critique of leadership and remarkable telling of the history of the Farm Holiday Association during those two tumultuous years. Luoma also provides an analysis of the economic situation which brought the farmers to take such desperate action. He relies on the New York Times to set the stage in the first paragraph of his introduction.

“The drop in farm prices has wiped

out farm securities, impoverished the farmer and decreased his purchasing power. The farmer’s town has less and less trade.

Mortgage holders and financial institutions serving the farmer have in many cases become frozen and insolvent. Railroads are carrying little or no trade to farm regions. Farmers are losing the farms which they acquired after generations of toil and thrift,” Luoma quotes the Times as writing on September 4, 1932.

These economic conditions were caused, Luoma says, by “forces in society in whose interest it was that bankruptcy should be used to eliminate the family farmer and the farmer himself.”

Luoma’s book of 108 pages describes these forces and the farmers reaction to them in clear, easy-to-read prose.

The Farm Holiday movement went beyond the two years described in his book and it achieved some remarkable political ends. But, by the 1960s and the NFO milk dumping, Luoma seems to believe the struggle had been lost.

“The Farmer Takes a Holiday” is a fascinating and educational book on a little known subject. Unfortunately, the book is out of print and can only be found in a few libraries in Minnesota through MNLink. Your local public library can help you access MNLink.

Two domestic demand barometers to consider: vehicle miles driven, and the Restaurant Performance Index.”

“People are traveling more starting in 2013 and the windfall energy savings over the past 18 months or so incentivized even more traveling,” he said.

“These factors have and, in our opinion, will continue to absorb higher cheese supplies through the summer months.”

Dairy Market News warns that milk production in the Central region remains strong, keeping cheese manufacturers running full schedules. “Sales are steady but there is still a considerable amount of stocks in the region. The recent upturn in sales has returned some inventories to comfortable levels, but a few processors are not willing to purchase extra milk without strong buyer interest. Cheese makers seem determined to work through inventories and avoid rebuilding stocks, even if they have available storage capacity.”

Milk is also readily available in the West and many cheese plants are running at or near full schedules, according to Dairy Market News, “Retail demand remains fairly good for most varieties of cheese.”

Butter inventories are well balanced

Butter churns across the Central region are active, reports Dairy Market News. As temperatures rise in the South Central area, demand for cream clearing to Class II is increasing. Many contacts believe interest in butter is increasing and feel the market is typical for this time of year. A large amount of butter makers feel well balanced with their inventories.

Participants report that a plentiful supply of butter in other countries is being offered to American buyers. Foreign manufacturers are reportedly pricing product to compete with the U.S. market.

And, with plenty of cream available, Western butter making also remains active. Processors describe retail and food service demand as “relatively good.”

■ Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed May 13 at 81.5 cents per pound, up 3.75 cents on the week and the highest spot price since November 2015. It is still 13.5 cents below a year ago. On the week, 36 cars exchanged hands, 19 on May 10 and 10 on May 11.

Stocks reached the program’s initial 109,000 metric ton ceiling at the end of March, and intervention purchases stalled for much of April while bureaucrats dotted all the i’s and crossed the market-manipulating t’s. In the two weeks since the ceiling was officially doubled to 219,000 metric tons, manufacturers have sold nearly 35,000 metric tons of SMP to the government. At this pace, they’ll need to increase the ceiling again in short order, or face the perils of the open market.”

Checking the price front: California’s June Class I milk prices were announced by the California Department of Food and Agriculture at $14.35/cwt. for the north and $14.62 for the south. Both are down 49 cents from May, $3.12 below a year ago, and the lowest levels since October 2009.

That puts the north’s six month average at $15.45, down from $17.45 at this time a year ago and $24.53 in 2014. The south’s average, at $15.72, is down from $17.72 a year ago and $24.80 in 2014.

Speaking of California prices, the Milk Producers Council’s Rob Vandenheuvel says the state-mandated temporary price adjustment has shrunk what he calls “the California Discount” (difference between the Federal order Class III and California 4b price) to an average of 82 cents/cwt. since last August. Total feed costs averaged $10.65/cwt., up 38 cents from January, down a dime from February, and $1.66 below March 2015. Purchased feed costs, at $5.90/cwt., were up 53 cents from the January level, down 6 cents from February, and 89 cents below March 2015.

Total costs, including feed, bedding, marketing, fuel, repairs, hired labor, taxes, etc., at $21.86/cwt., were down 9 cents from January, down 26 cents from February, and $1.88 below a year ago. Feed costs made up 48.7 percent of total costs in February, up from 48.6 percent the month before and down from 51.9 percent a year ago.

April’s income over feed cost is somewhat higher than last year’s value. Nevertheless April’s value for IOFC of $6.46 per cow per day is not good. Income over feed cost reflects daily gross milk income less feed costs for an average cow producing 65 pounds of milk per day.

“The milk margin is the estimated amount of the Pennsylvania all milk price that remains after the feed costs per cwt. of milk production are paid.

Like income over feed cost, this measure shows that the April PA milk margin was 6.9 percent higher than in March. ■ Cooperatives Working Together accepted six requests for export assistance this week to sell 668,001 pounds of cheese to customers in Asia and Oceania. The product has been contracted for delivery through September and raised CWT’s 2016 exports to 19.0 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 7.72 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 18.1 million pounds of whole milk powder to 16 countries on five continents.

■ In politics, the National Milk Producers Federation, the International Dairy Foods Association and the U.S. Dairy Export Council called on the White

House this week to “challenge a World Health Organization proposal which would discourage the consumption of dairy products by young children — advice that contradicts the recommendations of respected national and global health organizations that endorse milk for its nutritional value.”

A letter sent to the President stated that “dairy foods are doctor-recommended, but the bureaucrats at the WHO are about to overturn decades of sound nutrition and medical advice,” according to a joint press release.

“At issue is a WHO guidance document that will be presented to the World Health Assembly later this month, despite repeated requests from dairy organizations to fix significant problems with the proposal. The three dairy organizations urged the U.S. government to seek further scientific review of, and changes to, the WHO guidance and how it may be used in the future.”

“Discouraging parents from providing milk, one of the most nutritious foods in the human diet, to their children flies in the face of common sense,” the letter said. “Increased milk and dairy

product consumption in recent years has helped improve nutritional outcomes for hundreds of millions of children around the world. This very positive trend should be further encouraged, not thwarted by ill-advised guidance from WHO. “Earlier this year, the WHO released the draft guidance document that contradicts existing U.S. and international nutritional policy. It would dictate sweeping new restrictions, directly discouraging consumption of milk, as well as other new limits on various foods including dairy products, by children up to age three. Although the intent of the document is presumably to encourage healthy eating patterns for toddlers, the WHO proposal as now drafted would actually have the opposite effect, as such restrictions would significantly discourage children’s consumption of nutritious dairy products.

Two different revisions made to the original proposal failed to adequately address that underlying problem as well as other serious short-comings with the document.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide a new financing option to help farmers purchase portable storage and handling equipment. The loans, which now include a smaller microloan option with lower down payments, are designed to help producers, including new, small and mid-sized producers, grow their businesses and markets.

The program also offers a new "microloan" option which allows applicants seeking less than $50,000 to qualify for a reduced down payment of 5 percent and no requirement to provide three years of production history.

Farms and ranches of all sizes are eligible.

Producers can invest in equipment like conveyers, scales or refrigeration units and trucks that can store commodities before delivering them to markets.

Earlier this year, FSA significantly expanded the list of commodities eligible for Farm Storage Facility Loan. Eligible commodities now include aquaculture; floriculture; fruits (including nuts) and vegetables; corn, grain sorghum, rice, oilseeds, oats, wheat, triticale, spelt, buckwheat, lentils, chickpeas, dry peas sugar, peanuts, barley, rye, hay, honey, hops, maple sap, unprocessed meat and poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt and renewable biomass. FSFL microloans can also be used to finance wash and pack equipment used post-harvest, before a commodity is placed in cold storage.

Soybeans have not emerged in the Morris area yet, reported Reese.

Dale Kopecky of Northwest Research and Outreach Center in Crookston, said that the sugar beet crop was of most concern. “We have lost 5 to 10 percent of our crop. Right now we don’t have to do any reseeding on our fields,” he said.

Kopecky reported that soybeans in the center’s neighboring fields have emerged. “They’re looking pretty bad,” he said.

Sugar beets got hit near Ada, Minn.

Randy Tufton, Norman County Executive Director at the Farm Service Agency said that American Crystal Sugar had guys doing field reports in the area. American Crystal did not return The Land’s phone call.

Tufton estimated a 10 percent loss to sugar beets with some farmers looking at replanting.

“It’s still early enough now where

they can get a decent crop, but it’s added expense for the farmers,” said Tufton. “Some of the corn was touched but that should come back.”

In Renville and Kandiyohi counties, the Co-op Country Farmers Elevator in Danube reported that the region escaped the freeze on May 14 with a low temperature at the Olivia Airport of 32 F. On May 15, the low was at 30 F for four hours.

“Corn froze off completely. It was pretty widespread,” said Ryan Kiecker, certified crop consultant at CCFE. The corn looks healthy below ground, noted Kiecker, and with good growing conditions this week the corn will have new growth.

Sugar beets tolerated the weather pretty well.Everyone is keeping an eye on the soybeans. Kiecker estimated that CCFE customers have lost on average 5,000 to 8,000 emerged soybean plants per acre. ❖

Potter reported that the soybeans at the center look fine for the most part.

Three days after a frost will give farmers more information.

“Plants have to recover. They are shocked a little bit,” said Potter. “They have to grow enough to tell if the axillary buds are going to make it.”

Up at the North Central Research and Outreach Center in Grand Rapids, Minn., Bob Smith is field operations manager. They have alfalfa fields right now, but no soybeans yet. According to Weather Underground, the temperature at Newstrom Field got down to 28 F on May 14. “I would be very surprised if anyone in this area got beans in the ground yet,” Smith said.

Scientist Curt Reese at the West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris reported that temperatures got down to 29 F in the mornings of May 14 and 15. Reese heard reports that a lot of corn got nipped hard north of the station. Reese farms 20 miles south of the center, where reports were not as bad.

“I’m not overly concerned about corn being killed,” said Reese. “Even if it got hit, it’s not good for it, but it should be fine.”

BY MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor Freezing temperatures nipped corn across Minnesota, but University of Minnesota scientists say most crops will rebound after the freezing morning temperatures of May 14 and 15.

At the Southern Research and Outreach Center in Waseca, Tom Hoverstad reported that corn is OK because the growing point is below the ground. He would be more concerned if the forecast following the frost included cold, damp and cloudy weather.

“In five days you should see regrowth and hardly know the difference,” said Hoverstad.

Soybeans that have emerged can usually handle the temperatures we’ve had, said Hoverstad.

He noted that good growing conditions with sunny, dry and warm days the week of May 16 should help.

Bruce Potter, integrated pest management specialist, noted frost at Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton. The weather chart on the SROC website shows a low of 32 F on May 14.

“Corn will catch up in short order,” said Potter.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending May 13.

CORN — The May U.S. Department of Agriculture balance sheets were not that interesting for corn, but in the wake of bullish soybean numbers, corn prices shot higher. Corn didn’t reach its high for the week until a couple of days after the report when a good weekly export sales number was released. On the continuous chart, corn hit its high for the week at $3.86 per bushel. The high in the July contract was $3.91.25 per bushel.

Turning to the report, on the PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. 2015-16 corn balance sheet the St. Paul food, seed and industrial use category was lowered by 11 million bushels and exports showed an impressive 75 million bushel increase to 1.725 billion bushels. Ending stocks for 2015-16 were down 59 million bushels from April at 1.803 billion bushels. This was 38 million bushels below the average 1.841 billion bushel average trade estimate. The first official 2016-17 balance sheet put forth a 2.153 billion bushel carryout, which is still 350 million bushels higher than this year.

The category breakdown for 2016-17 was as follows: 93.6 million planted acres, 168 bushels per acre, production 14.43 billion bushels. Exports are projected to hit 1.9 billion bushels, the second highest export number in the last seven years and up 175 million bushels from this crop year. Ethanol is pegged at 5.3 billion bushels vs. 5.25 billion bushels this year. The 2016-17 stocks-to-use ratio is 15.2

The first half of May has started with a few surprises and some very unusual market movements in both cattle and hogs. It seems the weather isn’t the only questionable event that has taken place so far this spring. For the most part livestock prices have moved higher thus far in the month of May. The cattle market has continued to see high volatility and some erratic price movements in the past few weeks. The cash market has been like a roller coaster the past several weeks.

One week the market is lower followed by a sharp rally the next week. In the meantime the futures market was doing nearly JOE TEALE the exact opposite as the cash Broker market.

Considering the beef cutout over the past few weeks, the fact that the cutout dropped significantly during the period when the cash trade was the weakest. Then as the beef cutout began to recover the cash price rallied very strong during that period. That seems to set the tone for the volatility in price movement. The interesting thing about following the beef cutout is the fact that when the price comes down the movement of beef increases and when the price goes up the volume in the boxes decreases. This definitely would appear to indicate that the demand for beef is proportionately dependent on the price of beef at the wholesale level. Thus the supply and demand equation is still at work and is likely to continue to dominate the pricing mechanism. Therefore, not just supply will dictate the price of cattle but demand for beef will play a significant role in that price discovery.

Given the competitive nature of agriculture, the multiple risks, and the compressed profit margins we are currently experiencing, I believe there is value in sharing a time-tested process for adapting to change.

Many years ago I had the honor of learning the model for adapting to change from Col. Milton Toratti, a highly-decorated army veteran from the Vietnam era.

Step 1: Share information.

Hog market continues May rally However, as the pork cutout has risen, the volume in the pork products has seen a decline which indicates some consumer resistance at these higher levels. The futures market which has had a fairly decent premium has begun to show signs of exhaustion in recent trading. Seasonally, the hog market is known for establishing a top in the spring months and forming a seasonal bottom into the fall time of year.

Producers should keep a close eye on current market conditions and protect inventories as needed and pay close attention to premiums offered in the futures market at the current time. ❖

While not always easy and instinctual, I believe understanding and adhering to the process outlined above will not only help smooth out transitions and adjust to changes, it will prepare your team for growth and a bright future.

The hog market has been on a fairly consistent rally during the month of May. Cash prices for hogs have pushed above the mid-$70s lean by the middle of the month because of decent demand for pork and relatively tight numbers in certain areas of the country. The pork cutout has also responded in a positive manner, climbing to over $83.00 per hundredweight.

2016-17, world ending stocks are forecast at 68.2 mmt vs. 73.2 mmt anticipated.

The Rosario Grains Exchange cut their Argentine soybean production estimate from 59 mmt to 55 mmt; the USDA is at 57 mmt. A labor strike at the Argentine port of Rosario, which handles 80 percent of their grain exports, began on May 13.

Weekly soybean export sales were a disappointment at 7.8 million bushels. Even though the sales were lower than expected, the gap between last year and this year narrowed from 7 percent behind to 6 percent behind last year. The USDA is calling for a 5.6 percent decrease in export sales year on year. Sales for the 2016-17 marketing year were negligible at 200,000 bushels. New crop commitments are slow at just 120 million bushels vs. 162 million bushels on the books last year by this date.

New sales reported during the week included 280,000 metric tons of old crop beans to unknown, 140,000 metric tons new crop to unknown, 40,000 metric tons of soyoil to China and 50,000 metric tons of soyoil to unknown. ❖

SOYBEANS — The USDA shocked traders by cutting ending stocks for 2015-16 by more than anticipated and our first look at the 2016-17 balance sheet was eye-popping. On the continuous chart, nearby soybeans surged to their highest level since November 2014 when the May contracts hit $10.82.25 per bushel the day after the report. The 2015-16 balance sheet showed an increase in the crush of 10 million bushels and a jump in exports of 35 million bushels.

The resulting drop in ending stocks of 45 million bushels to 400 million bushels was 23 million bushels below the average guess, but within the range of guesses.

The first official 2016-17 forecast was where the big surprise lay. Planted acreage was pegged at 82.2 million bushels, yield at 46.7 bushels per acre for a crop of 3.8 billion bushels. On the demand side, crush was set at 1.915 billion bushels, up from 1.88 billion bushels year on year.

The export outlook indicates a sharp year-on-year rise from 1.74 billion to 1.885 billion bushels. This is interesting since the USDA increased export forecasts for both Argentina and Brazil, despite lowering their production outlook. The USDA also only increased Chinese bean imports by 4 mmt for next year.

Ending stocks for 2016-17 of only 305 million bushels were 100 million bushels below the average 405 million bushel average estimate and was on the lower end of the pre-report range of 290 to 500 million bushels. The February Outlook Conference projected 2016-17 ending stocks at 440 million bushels.

The stocks-to-use ratio for 2016-17 is 7.8 percent compared to 10.7 percent this year. On the meal side, ending stocks for both 2015-16 and 2016-17 are forecast at 300,000 metric tons. Oil ending stocks are projected to fall from 2.355 billion pounds in 2015-16 to 2.025 billion pounds in 2016-17.

On report day, meal locked limit up which sent the entire soy complex into expanded limits the following day. With current wet weather and now the price difference in new crop corn and soybeans, a larger acreage switch to soybeans is anticipated. More soybean acres are predicted in South America next year as beans are more profitable. In South America, the USDA cut Brazil’s bean crop from 100 mmt to 99 mmt. Argentina’s bean crop was pegged at 56.5 mmt.

Corn rallied on the coat tails of the soybean reaction.

On the world scene, Brazil’s corn production was lowered from 84 million metric tons last month to 81 mmt this month. Brazil imported 106,000 metric tons of corn in April with the majority sourced from Argentina. It was also the largest quantity of corn imports since October 2014. Dry weather in northern Brazil may further reduce the crop. In Argentina, fuel prices are up 31 percent since the first of the year, essentially erasing the farmers’ benefit from the elimination of the export tax.

Argentina’s corn production was dropped from 28 mmt last month to 27 mmt this month. World corn ending stocks for 2015-16 were down slightly monthon-month from 208.9 mmt to 207.9 mmt. For 201617, world ending stocks are projected at 207 mmt vs.

211.6 mmt estimated. This would be the first yearon-year world ending stocks decrease in five years.

Weekly old crop corn exports were better than anticipated at 43.5 million bushels, bringing total commitments to just 6 percent behind last year. The USDA’s latest export forecast is calling for 1.725 billion bushels — a 7.4 percent decline year-on-year.

This was the biggest weekly gain in a year. Ethanol stocks fell 40 million gallons to 892 million gallons, but stocks are still 4.7 percent higher than last year.

According to the Energy Information Administration, the four-week demand for U.S. gasoline is up 5.1 percent from a year ago. Ethanol margins are in the 15 cent per gallon area. The bids which were offered into CRP for 2016 were evaluated, using the environmental benefits index. USDA targeted the most environmentally sensitive land with the 2016 CRP sign-up in order to reduce soil erosion, protect water and air quality, and to enhance wildlife protection and carbon sequestration. There continues to be special focus on buffer strips near rivers and streams.

EBI factors which were used by FSA to evaluate CRP contract offers included water quality benefits from reduced erosion, runoff, and leaching; wildlife habitat benefits from land covers on CRP contract acreage; on-farm benefits from reduced soil erosion; air quality benefits from reduced wind erosion; benefits that will likely endure beyond the CRP contract period; and cost per acre for the CRP rental contract.

USDA is currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of the CRP program and three decades of conservation success. The CRP program was developed as part of the 1985 farm bill and was established by USDA on Dec.23, 1985.

expire in 2017, and nearly 1.5 million acres in 2018. Given the level of CRP acres expiring, it’s possible that we could have another general CRP sign-up period in 2017 or 2018.

The CRP program remains extremely popular among landowners, conservationists, and many members of Congress. The program seems to be a good tool to address water quality, soil erosion, etc. In recent farm bills, Congress has reduced the maximum number of CRP acres with each revised fiveyear farm bill. These reductions have been due to cutting federal spending on the CRP program, and were not a reflection of the CRP program accomplishing its objectives. It will be interesting as we begin to develop the 2018 farm bill, whether Congress will strive for stability or enhancement of the CRP program, or will propose further reductions to the program.

CRP protects more than 170,000 stream miles with grass buffers and riparian forests, which is enough to circle the world seven times. CRP has prevented more than 9 billion tons of soil erosion since 1985, which is enough to fill 600 million dump trucks.

Each year, CRP has reduced nitrogen runoff on tilled cropland by 95 percent, and has reduced phosphorus runoff by 85 percent.

CRP has created nearly 2.7 million acres of restored wetlands. CRP helps enhance populations of ducks, pheasants, quail, and other wildlife species.

CRP has resulted in the sequestration of an annual average of 49 million tons of greenhouse gases, which is equivalent to taking about 9 million cars off the road.

CRP provides nearly $2 billion per year to private landowners, which are dollars that help support local businesses and the local economy.

CRP contracts will expire on just over 1.65 million acres on September 30, 2016. This includes 92,409 acres in Minnesota, 99,645 acres in Iowa, 58,712 acres in South Dakota, 44,595 acres in North Dakota, and 22,885 acres in Wisconsin. Nationally, slightly over 2.5 million contracted CRP acres will

Iris pests include the iris borer which is common and has to be dealt with in our garden each year.

The borers spend the winter as eggs on old leaves and in the spring hatch into tiny caterpillars and tunnel through the leaves reaching the rhizomes where they feed.

The tips of the leaves turn brown and unsightly.

Maintaining good sanitation practices is important in controlling these pests. If you see signs of damage, dig the plant up and examine the rhizomes for borers and cut off infected parts and burn or bury them. In the fall it is important to remove and destroy old iris leaves so the eggs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t over-winter.

Iris, when combined with mounding or sprawling plants, add a punctuation point to the garden. They are equally at home with conifers, other perennials or just simply a splendid sight in a bed all their own.

Harvest Popcorn 1/3 cup butter 1 teaspoon dill weed 1 teaspoon lemon pepper 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 quarts popped corn 2 cups shoestring potatoes 1 cup nuts Melt butter; add next six ingredients.

Mix well. Add remaining ingredients.

Spread in jelly roll pan. Bake 6-8 minutes in a 350 degree oven, stirring occasionally.

■ Store-bought caramel rolls cannot compete with homemade ones. They are not even in the same category. Try some next time you have a lazy weekend.

Bundt Cake Caramel Rolls Butter Bundt pan and sprinkle with chopped nuts. Put in about 1-1/2 dozen frozen dough balls. Scatter in pan.

Sprinkle with a 3-ounce package of butterscotch pudding (not instant).

Melt 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup margarine and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Pour over balls and set overnight or until dough has risen to about the top of the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. You can sprinkle more cinnamon over dough before putting sugar mix on top, if desired.

Baked potatoes are ideal with this main dish and can be baked at the same time. Bake potatoes for 1-1/2 hours.

Sharing meals, swapping recipes, arguing about ingredients, all these activities are part of the great big lovefest surrounding our favorite foods. Our warmest memories about growing up are often centered on the kitchen table. Food is a stretchy glue that keeps friends and family from straying too far.

Speaking of friendship, one of my Janesville-dwelling friends recently shared a treasure: the “Fisher Family Favorites” cookbook — a nicely-printed three-ring binder full of recipes by the descendants of Frank and Veronika (Verona) Fisher. Many, many years in the making, the impressively complete cookbook was a labor of love by family members who just couldn’t let Veronika’s fabulous cooking be forgotten. Here are a few of my faves: ■ Did somebody mention strudel? I hope so! Veronika’s strudel features a sweet cottage cheese filling.

Croatian Cheese Strudel with Cottage Cheese Filling Filling: 2 pounds dry cottage cheese 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons sour cream 2 egg whites, slightly beaten 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sugar Press the cheese through a sieve.

Then, add all remaining ingredients and mix well. Spread over prepared strudel dough and bake: Dough: 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons sugar 1/4 cup shortening 2/3 cup milk Place flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a bowl. Cut in shortening; add milk. Knead gently on a floured board.

Roll with rolling pin to 1/4-inch thickness. Brush the spread dough with melted butter. Add cottage cheese filling. Roll in jelly-roll fashion and form in semi-circle on greased pan. Bake in 425-degree oven for 20-25 minutes. If desired, frost with confectioners frosting and sprinkle with nuts or sugar.

ave you ever imagined doing something bigger than your life?

Bob Asp did.

In the summer of 1971, the Moorhead Middle School student counselor should have been enjoying summer vacation. Instead he fell, broke some bones and was hospitalized for weeks.

To pass the time, he read books about Vikings that his brother Bjarne brought him. Like many families in the Moorhead, Minn., area, the Asps were Norwegian descendants. In those books, Bob learned about the 78foot long Gokstad Viking ship which had been discovered in a Norwegian burial mound in the 1880s.

Inspired, Bob suggested to Bjarne that they build a ship like the Gokstad and sail it to Norway. Bjarne likely said something like, sure we could do that. Then he went home to watch television.

Bob lay in bed for a while longer and a small fire began to bloom in his heart and it grew and grew until it was so big it was finally burning in the hearts of people all the way to New York harbor, across the Atlantic Ocean, to Norway. The boat that Bob Asp built and that his children sailed across the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean is called Hjemkomst. It’s on display at the Hjemkomst Center along the Red River in Moorhead.

At the center you can run your hand along some of 11,000 board feet of oak planking that Bob, his family, and a few friends riveted together at the Hawley Shipyard to make a ship like the 1,200 year old Gokstad ship. You can peer far up past the huge square sails to the top of the mast and imagine Bob’s sons up there struggling to lower the main sail as the Hjemkomst sailed into a mid-Atlantic tropical storm.

You can stand alongside the 8-foot long, 3-inch thick oak rudder and ask yourself, “How could a school counselor make such a thing?”

Then you could wonder how could the Atlantic break it as the ship surfed down a towering wave. In Moorhead, you can look down into the quarters for the 11 man, one woman crew and imagine what living onboard for a month without touching land would be like. You can feel something of what Bob Asp felt growing in his heart in that hospital bed.

Bob Asp was able to sail the Hjemkomst on her maiden voyage in Duluth harbor before leukemia took him.

Hjemkomst is pronounced Yem-komst and is Norwegian for homecoming. ❖
