THE LAND — FARMFEST 2019

The Land booth at Farmfest is worth the visit

The Land staff is ready for Minnesota Farmfest — starting with this copy of the Farmfest Preview 2019. We hope this special publication helps you plan Ag Tent — your visit. Additional copies will be available at our booth in the Ag Tent, Booth 2401. We’re thrilled to be at Farmfest and have this wonderful opportunity to meet our readers. There’s some nifty new prizes this year so stop by our booth and try your luck at The Land’s big prize wheel. Every spinner will receive a prize. Daily grand prize drawing Each day of Farmfest — Aug. 6, 7, 8 — we will be giving away a “The Land” tote bag filled with goodies. Fill out a card and enter to win. The drawing will be at 1 p.m. daily. Winners must pick up their prizes by 3 p.m. the same day. Renew your subscription Check your subscription status and see if we have a 2019 subscription card on file for you. If you don’t have a subscription card on file, you can fill one out at our booth. And you will be entered to win a Grill Zone 3-Burner Gas Grill. The subscriber card drawing deadline is Aug. 23. If you already sent in your card, we thank you and you’re automatically entered in the drawing! We need your signed cards every year to help us qualify for lower postage rates and keep The Land

coming to your mailbox at a reasonable price. This also helps us show local and national advertisers that Booth 2401 The Land is being requested by readers. Fill out a subscription card and don’t miss a single issue of The Land. Meet the staff The Land General Manager Deb Petterson will be at the booth on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stop by and tell her what you think of The Land. Deb enjoys hearing from our readers. Our advertising representatives James McRae and Ryan Landherr will be at the booth and visiting with clients and exhibitors at Farmfest. If your company is interested in advertising with the No. 1 choice for farmers, these gentlemen are the ones to talk to. Managing Editor Paul Malchow will be patrolling the grounds on Wednesday and Thursday and will be at The Land’s booth Wednesday at 1 p.m. and all day on Thursday. Paul always want to meet readers and hear what you’d like to see in The Land. Story ideas, farm memories, ag policy, markets, regulations? Let us know what’s on your mind. We’re listening. Staff Writer Emeritus Dick Hagen knows his way around Farmfest and he’ll be there to take in all the sights and sounds. Meet Dick at The Land booth on any of the three days. Staff Writer and “Cooking with Kristin” columnist

Visit us at our Redwood Falls location: 1600 East Bridge Street during Farmfest 2019 to register to win a meat package!

Kristin Kveno will be at the booth on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Do you want to talk recipes, “From The Fields” or have a story idea to share? Stop by The Land’s booth on Aug. 6 and say hello! Fans of Terri Schlichenmeyer and her book reviews can meet “The Bookworm Sez” author on Wednesday at The Land booth. Terri just released a new book, “The Handy Wisconsin Answer Book” this summer. Her book is part of The Land’s grand prize daily drawing. “Best of Back Roads” book In 2003, The Land unveiled a new feature, “Back Roads,” on the back page of our issue. Since that first essay, we have published more than 350 slices of life in rural Minnesota and Iowa. And “Back Roads” has become a reader favorite. Our writers have taken you to festivals, country churches, pow-wows, farms, barns, parks and cafes. “Best of Back Roads: Stories of hidden gems in Minnesota and Iowa” is a collector’s book filled with staff and reader favorites. You can buy it for the special Farmfest price of $10. That’s $29.95 off the regular price. Pay no shipping and tax. And take it home with you! As an added bonus, if you buy the “Best of Back Roads” book, you’ll get a “Skol! Vikings 50” Minnesota Vikings 50th anniversary commemorative book (valued at $39.95) absolutely FREE! Farmfest is a great opportunity for us to meet our readers, we hope you can stop by to say hello. v

Farmfest to feature industrial hemp demo plot IDEAg Group, producers of Minnesota Farmfest, will showcase an industrial hemp demonstration plot at the Aug. 6-8 show. Hemp crops are currently growing on 7,200 square feet of land and will be ready to display to Farmfest attendees by the opening day of the show. Three hemp varieties are represented — one fiber and two grain. Legacy Hemp, Bija Hemp and Hemp Genetics International provided the seed for the demonstration plots. “We are excited for farmers to come to Farmfest to learn about hemp production,” said John Hendel, director of event sales for IDEAg Group. “Attendees will learn how to plant and nurture different varieties of the crop, in addition to uses for harvested hemp. We understand the enormous interest and curiosity around this new crop.” In addition to planted hemp, the demo area will include potted cannabidiol plants for attendees to examine.

Hemp experts Matt Little and Garth Carlson from Midwest Hemp Farms, Charlie Levine from Hemp Acres, John Strohfus from Minnesota Hemp Farms Inc. and Bryan Parr from Legacy Hemp will be on hand to meet one-on-one with attendees and answer their questions about growing hemp. “Minnesota is in its fourth year of the hemp pilot program and we are continuing to get calls from farmers expressing interest and enthusiasm in placing this crop in rotation but many still know very little,” said Margaret Wiatrowski, industrial hemp program coordinator, Minnesota Department of Agriculture. “We thought Farmfest would be an excellent opportunity for farmers to see the plant and the different varieties in person and learn more about the markets available.” IDEAg Group worked with the MDA to obtain licensing to grow hemp in the demo plots. This article was submitted by IDEAg Group. v

IDEAg Group, producers of Farmfest, will showcase a hops demonstration yard at this year’s event. This is the first year that hops are growing on the Farmfest grounds. The yard features two hop varieties: Cascade and Centennial, and will showcase optimal growing practices according to the most recent research and studies. “Farmfest is the perfect venue to demonstrate hops production in an under-represented area of the state,” said John Hendel, director, event sales for IDEAg Group. “Visitors to Farmfest will be able to to see what hop production looks like and learn about the crop from area experts.” In addition to seeing the hop yard on

the grounds of Farmfest, experienced hops growers and members of the Minnesota Hop Growers Association will attend to answer questions about the production of hops. “Hops are a great way for farmers to work on diversifying their crop portfolio,” said Josh Havill, a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota and vice president of MHGA. “Craft beer has had a renaissance and brewers have a desire to keep their ingredient sources local,” he added. “Local growing and farmer practices can influence the flavor and aromatics of the final product. Our research at the University of Minnesota has focused on developing new varieties and understanding the best methods for managing diseases in commercial hopyards.” v
