Getting Around There are plenty of ways to get around the 50 acres of Farmfest. Take advantage of the many convenient transportation options provided. On-site shuttle: A complimentary on-site shuttle will be circling the show grounds throughout the three days. Look for the Farmfest Shuttle Stop signs and hop on for a ride around the perimeter of the show. Parking lot shuttle: A shuttle will run through the parking lot during the show days to help you get from your car to the entrances and back again. Shuttles will make multiple stops throughout the parking lot. Golf cart rental: Golf carts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cart rental is located inside Entrance Gate 2. Golf Carts can be reserved in advance by contacting NB Golf Cars at (605) 275-4653.

Linder Farm Director Lynn Ketelsen will chat with broadcasting legend Orion Samuelson. The Land Staff Writer Dick Hagen will join the conversation. The Land began coming into the homes of southern Minnesota farm families on Sept. 30, 1976. Since then, our coverage has expanded to all of Minnesota and northern Iowa. Along with Linder Farm Network, The Land has become a trusted source in Minnesota agriculture. Through the years, we have met up with readers, farmers and ag businesses at Farmfest. In fact, The Land staff writer Dick Hagen has attended every Farmfest. He first started coming to Farmfest as a Trojan Seed representative. Hagen has been in agriculture for 56 years. He began his journalism career with Wallaces Farmer. In 1962, Hagen joined the Farm Journal, where he was regional editor for Wisconsin, Minnesota, South and North Dakota.
“Great experience zipping across this four-state area trying to lend a message to the exciting things which were just breaking in ag in the 1960s,” said Hagen. “Big agriculture was just beginning to showcase in that era both in farm size and farm equipment size. Trust me, going from 4-row to 12Dick Hagen row was big in those days!” In 1970, Hagen joined Trojan Seed Company in Olivia, Minn., where this Iowa farm boy and his wife Gladie still live today. He’s a strong community supporter and a regular at the Chatterbox Café, where he drinks coffee and talks farming with the guys. Many a story has come out of those sessions! “Ten years now with The Land, and I truly do feel The Land has heart with its readers,” said Hagen. “I much enjoy the privilege of being a guy on the scene talking and reporting these benchmarks.” Hagen is ever optimistic about farming and the agriculture industry. “The good Lord willing, the next 40 years will be just as illuminating for agriculture and The Land,” said Hagen. Dick Hagen will be walking the grounds of Farmfest with his notebook, recorder and camera. He’ll be interviewing visitors and exhibitors, making new acquaintances and catching up with old friends. Meet The Land columnists, correspondents We wanted to give our columnists and correspondents the opportunity to meet our readers. Stop by The Land Ag Tent Booth 2401 to chat with your favorite columnist or correspondent. Karen Schwaller Since 2012, The Land readers have laughed and cried with Karen Schwaller in her Table Talk column. Her down-to-earth stories tell the life of a farm woman with heart and humor. Karen is looking forward to meeting The Land readers. Karen Schwaller Karen has been a farm girl for 50 Booth 2401 some years. She grew up on a Wednesday, grain and livestock farm in north- Aug. 3 west Iowa. She attended college 1-3 p.m. and lived in town for a year or two before she married Dave Schwaller and went back to the farm. The Schwallers grow corn, soybeans and alfalfa and raise sheep on their farm near Milford, Iowa. Karen’s twin sons and daughter are in their 20s. The boys are farming and have a cow-calf operation and her daughter, who is in agribusiness, got married last summer. Still, Karen’s just as busy as ever. She recently wrote about a day on her farm when she helped with sheep chores during lambing, dug out Farm Service Agency papers, changed the laundry, made supper, balanced the checkbook, cut her son’s hair, put away laundry and cleaned up the

Lenae Bulthuis Lenae Bulthuis writes The Back Porch, musings about faith, family and farming from the back porch of her corn, bean and sugar beet farm in west central Minnesota. For the past 19 years, she has been sharing what’s in her heart and inspiring our readers. She finds her own inspiration in Lenae Bulthuis the Word, prayer and the people in Booth 2401 her life. Married to farmer Mike Thursday, Aug. 4 Bulthuis, Lenae is the mother of 10 a.m.-12 p.m. three grown daughters and a grandmother too. Lenae is also the curriculum writer and training manager for GEMS Girls’ Clubs. GEMS stands for Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior. Lenae is passionate about mentoring girls and introducing them to Jesus. Lenae works from her home office and travels to GEMS conferences to lead training events. In the past year, her most endearing columns included lessons learned from listening and observing her two young grandsons, Jackson and Landon. She also gently reminds us that children are watching us and how important it is to be a good example to the children in our life. See MEET, pg. 15F

Meet The Land correspondents Kristin Kveno Kristin Kveno is best known to readers as The Land’s From the Fields correspondent. For the past four years, Kristin has checked in with farmers across Minnesota and northern Iowa to get their latest crop conditions. For Kristin, FTF is a roller Kristin Kveno coaster ride every year. She enjoys Booth 2401 getting to know the farmers and Thursday, following their lives from planting Aug. 4 to harvest. When the FTF farmers 12-2 p.m. have setbacks — storms, frost, hail — Kristin’s heart sinks. When they pull in a record yield, Kristin is happy for them. Kristin lives in New Ulm, Minn., with her husband, Seth Kveno, a seed sales manager for Mycogen. She spends most of her time with her four children, ages 4 to 10. From 2005 to 2009, Kristin was copy editor and staff writer for The Land. She has speech and mass communication degrees from North Dakota State University, Fargo. Carolyn Van Loh Carolyn Van Loh has been a correspondent for The Land since 2009. She is a history buff and retired English professor from Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Owatonna, Minn. Married to farmer Dave Van Loh, Carolyn is a mother and grand- Carolyn Van Loh mother. She lives amidst the her- Booth 2401 itage of the Van Loh family farm Wednesday near Westbrook, Minn. She loves Aug. 3 the rural lifestyle and the scenery 10 a.m.-12 p.m. that changes with all four seasons. This year, Carolyn took us to Balaton, Minn., where a school became the headquarters for a budding shrimp farm industry. On our Back Roads page, Carolyn transported readers to End-OLine Railroad Park in Currie, Minn. She is the author of three books. “A Place of Interest: One Family’s Journey to the Farmlands of Minnesota� tells the story of a community growing up on the prairie. “Great Is Thy Faithfulness� is a 50-year history of Pillsbury Baptist Bible College and “Strong Roots: The People of the Minnesota Farm Bureau� is a history of the organization’s first 90 years.

MEET, from pg. 14F Renae B. Vander Schaaf The Land Correspondent Renae B. Vander Schaaf lives on a corn and soybean farm with her husband Dave Vander Schaaf near Orange City, Iowa. Renae is the mother of six grown children and a grandmother of five. Renae tends a vegetable garden, Renae B. where she grows a lot of the fam- Vander Schaaf ily’s food. Her farmhouse kitchen is Booth 2401 often filled with the delicious Tuesday, Aug. 2 aroma of baked goods. She bakes 12-2 p.m. fruit pies on order and keeps a local meat market supplied with frozen unbaked pies for customers. The farm also has some chickens, Angus and Jersey cows. In the past year, Renae took us to an Aronia berry harvest in Sioux Center, Iowa; a tractor parade in Orange City, Iowa; and pumpkin farms near Orange City and Doon, Iowa. She is the author of “A Place of Refuge� and “A Place of New Beginnings.� Set in the late 1800s, this series follows a young Dutch girl who calls the Iowa prairie home.
