Mexico was the state’s second biggest export market, behind Canada. The state’s farmers also sold about $800 million in agricultural commodities to Mexico.

“If we get in a trade war with Mexico, farmers are going to learn they’re on the front line of that war,” said Ed Usset, University of Minnesota grain marketing economist.

within this volatile world called agriculture, co-ops also are into the “fewer but bigger” mode. Over the past 40 years, co-op numbers across America have fallen from 6,445 to about 2,100. And the pressure continues for even more mergers.

You recall when your local co-op was primarily a storage and marketing facility for your corn and soybeans. But today, many farms have their own grain storage and sell directly to large grain handling firms such as Cargill, CHS or ADM. As a result, co-ops have branched out into technical services to meet the demands of their farming clients driven by precision farming technologies. The problem is, low crop prices are expected to stick around which logically could drive even more mergers. Yes, mergers benefit co-ops for the same reasons they benefit any industry. Fewer employees are needed which helps lower costs. n Perry Aasness of the Minnesota Agri-Growth Council recently voiced a need for trade barrier reductions. “A key path to economic success for Minnesota farmers and agribusinesses is through reducing trade barriers and expanding global markets,” he said. “With 95 percent of the world’s population living outside the U.S., we call on President Trump and his administration to commit to prioritize expanding market opportunities for U.S. agriculture. Farm lenders, ag suppliers, and budget hawks, are you listening? Denying today’s farm and ranch reality ensures farm policy failure and, right behind it, farm and ranch failure.

Even if ag and Congressional leaders address this evident need, it is not at all evident that the Trump White House will support any Farm Bill — let alone much needed changes in the 2014 law. Early indications aren’t hopeful.

Top Trump aide Stephen Miller (who co-authored the President’s grim inaugural address) helped sink recent immigration reform, a farm and ranch priority, while on the staff of then-Senator, now Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican.

Also, Paul Winfree, a former Heritage Foundation economist, now serves as Trump’s director of budget policy. It’s a lofty perch from which to advocate a long-sought Heritage Foundation goal: deep cuts in SNAP spending. If he succeeds, the weakened farmurban coalition that carried previous Farm Bills over the finish line may be gone for good.

In the meantime, the 2018 Farm Bill has left the barn. Where it goes from here is impossible to guess.

Amaryllis provides long-lasting, colorful blooms In early summer, the bulb can be placed outside. One method is to actually plant it and another method is placing the pot in a dappled shade location. Before the first frost in the fall, bring the pot indoors, stop watering, and place it in a cool dry spot like a basement. Amaryllis need a period of eight to 10 weeks of dormancy which is a time of rest and no growth. During the dormant time, check the bulb periodically. If you notice a new green flower stalk emerging or if you wish to begin the bloom cycle, bring it to a warm sunny spot and begin watering regularly.

Amaryllis are bulbs of the genus Hippeastrum and are native to tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas. Bulbs discovered in Mexico and brought to Europe in the 1700s soon became popular because of their huge exotic flowers that could be forced into bloom at holiday time. With proper care, an amaryllis can be kept indefinitely as long as the right conditions for growth and dormancy are provided.

their rule-breaking ways as far as possible from the public eye. And there are those who see rules as license. They do whatever they want, whenever they want. Since God loves them, and they love God, all must be good.

Here’s the thing. Christianity is not legalism or license. They both miss the mark. What matters is relationship! God invites us into a forever relationship through His son, Jesus, not because we follow rules, but because He loves us. And we gratefully follow Him and His word, not because we have to, but because we love Him back. Grace is available to all.

“God comes to me in grace and wraps arms of love around me and begins a process that will result in the total transformation of the core of my personhood, the heart,” writes Paul David Tripp. “He won’t rest and He won’t relent until He’s created in you and me a completely pure heart.”

Cookbook Corner

By SARAH JOHNSON The Land Correspondent Thanks to personal contributions from then-First Lady Betty Ford, Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller and the wives of U.S. senators and representatives, Kokesch-Longstrom Publishers of Marshall was able to produce the fascinating “American Bicentennial Cookbook: 200 Years of Good Cooking” with some pretty special recipes.

Two gentlemen from southwestern Minnesota, Eugene Longstrom and Allen J. Kokesch, were farm boys who graduated from Southwest State University with degrees in social science. They worked to develop community facilities and services for the mentally handicapped, and indeed the cookbook helped raise funds for the Minnesota Association for Retarded Citizens.

I discovered the cookbook in a second-hand bookshop and read its typewriter-typed pages front to finish. Jacalyn S. Kokesch created the cover in a red, white and blue flag design that just screams the 1976 Bicentennial, when many Americans rediscovered patriotism for a year, with a little help from the endless commercials, school projects, TV specials, athletic events, parades and anything else that could be enhanced with a “bicentennial” label. n Each state has its own section.

Minnesota, for example, includes recipes for Walter Mondale’s family’s pumpkin bread, Norwegian meatballs and gravy, an Indian corn soup called waskuya, “feather” sponge cake, potato soup, pea timballs, strawberry preserves, ripe cucumber pickles and this one for Indian fry bread:

Yield increases explain popularity of cover crops

By CAROLYN VAN LOH The Land Correspondent Farmers have tried numerous methods of improving the profitability of their land, and Minnesota farmers are realizing the benefits of using cover crops. The Cannon River Watershed Partnership, headquartered in Northfield, Minn., defines cover crops as “plants that are planted between cash crops to keep living cover on the landscape.”

Cover crops are one way to manage soil health while increasing crop productivity and improving the environment. The U.S. Department of Agriculture promotes four basic practices for improving the health of the soil.

• Keep the soil covered as much as possible.

• Disturb the soil as little as possible.

• Keep plants growing throughout the year to feed the soil.

• Diversify as much as possible using crop rotation and cover crops.

The benefits of growing cover crops vary greatly, depending on the area, weather conditions, and type of cash crop in the field, but a few general advantages are a good place to begin the discussion.

The Cover Crops Field Guide from the Midwest Cover Crops Council says cover crops help prevent water/wind erosion and improve soil quality.

Legume cover crops fix atmospheric nitrogen into forms accessible by plants. About one-half of the nitrogen in the cover crop shoots should be available to the next cash crop one or two months after the cover crop is terminated. The growing roots of all cover crops take up residual soil nitrates from fertilizer and soil organic matter.

Also, some cover crops are known for their ability to suppress weeds.

According to a Conservation Technology Information Center survey, after growing a cover crop, corn yields increased an average of 3.4 bushels per acre ... Soybean yield increased 1.5 bushels per acre. After corn planted on corn more than four years, the yield increased by 8.3 percent. with the cash crop. Time is an important factor as is the growing time for the cover crop before it becomes a benefit. Timing varies by species. Climate, soils and other growing conditions affect cover crops. Some cover crops tolerate wet or droughty conditions while others do not.

Aerial seeding Last July 27, Lamberton, Minn., farmer Bill Pfaar and his son Brian planted a cover crop consisting of rye, radish, crimson clover and rapeseed with their corn. Because of the extratall corn last year, an airplane was the best option for spreading the seed. By Sept. 18, cover crop growth was limited, possibly a result of the tall corn.

Ben Olsem and his wife, Megan, demonstrate their support of cover crops by using their airplane to broadcast the seed. Megan provides ground support by getting the seed ready to load onto the plane and sees to anything else needing to be done. Their business, Olsem Aerial Application Service near Westbrook, Minn., also does weed control aerially.

“Seeing results makes me excited,” said Ben. When asked why he uses a plane instead of ground applicators, he replied, “Ground rigs create soil compaction, something cover crops help to prevent.”

The Conservation Technology Information Center surveyed 2,020 farmers across the country concerning their cover crop results in 2016. This survey indicated a steady increase in acres put into cover crops. The average of 339 acres using cover crops more than doubled the acreage participants said they planted in 2011.

According to the survey, after growing a cover crop, corn yields increased

an average of 3.4 bushels per acre, or 1.9 percent. Soybean yield increased by 1.5 bu./acre, or 2.8 percent. After corn planted on corn more than four years, the yield increased by 8.3 percent. The increases may not be spectacular, but there is a definite increase that should catch the eye of a crop farmer.

In the Olsems’ customer area, cover crop acreage two years ago was 1,200 acres. Last year it increased to 7,000 acres. Ben predicted, “We’re planning on a good year this season.”

Jerry Ackermann is a Lakefield farmer who distributes cover crop seed and hires Olsem to plant his own cover crop. Ackermann said that a couple of years ago, 2,800 acres in his area had cover crops. Last year, the number increased to 8,000 and this year he anticipates over 10,000 acres growing cover crops.

Ackermann experimented with cover cropping in a test plot about seven years ago. He has observed that cover crop fields are found in clusters because one neighbor learns from another and tries cover crops himself. Soon, several neighbors are comparing notes on how their cover crops are helping retain moisture and control weeds.

“Multi-seed mixes are best,” says Ackermann. “Even a thin stand of cereal rye does its job controlling weeds.”

Resources All of the cover crop variables can be overwhelming for the farmer who has “never done it that way” before.

However, help is available from government entities like the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Redwood Falls, Minn., or the Cannon River Watershed Partnership. Each organization has trained personnel to guide a farmer who starts using cover crops. Your local county extension agent will also have valuable resources to guide you on your way.

When talking to those involved in cover crops, a consistent attitude prevailed, whether the person distributed seeds, farmed or was employed in the industry. Their excitement enhanced the comments they made about proven results and prospects for the future.

This summer and fall, take notice of harvested fields. The green plants you see most likely are cover crops and not weeds. v

Alley cropping may be viable for marginal, wet land

Between 2010 and 2016, Gamble planted four different herbaceous perennial crops in 50-foot wide alleys between 16-foot wide rows of a bushy willow called Fish Creek and a fast growing hybrid poplar called NM6. The herbaceous perennials included switchgrass, prairie cordgrass, an alfalfa-intermediate wheatgrass mixture, and a native tallgrass-forblegume polyculture. The system, which was planted on research plots at three farm sites in Martin and Dakota counties, is called alley cropping. The study was designed to harvest both the woody crops and herbaceous crops for burnable biomass to be used for electricity or heat production.

Gamble said that his work built upon that of previous research projects by University of Minnesota researchers.

“Gregg Johnson’s work with willow and Craig Sheaffer and Don Wyse’s work with perennial grasses and grass mixtures for bioenergy paved the way for my research,” he said. “I worked with them to design our alley cropping system.”

versity’s department of forest resources, was also involved in planning the research.

In 2010, when the research plots were established, high fuel prices made growing biofuels of farmland appear financially rewarding. By 2016, fuel prices had fallen dramatically and farm-grown biofuels no longer looked profitable. Even though large acreages of hybrid poplar that were planted in central Minnesota were harvested for pulpwood, Gamble does not believe that would change the picture for southern Minnesota plantings.

“Southern Minnesota is too far from paper-making plants to make growing pulpwood here economically feasible,” he said.

Lessons learned Although the plots were plowed down after Gamble finished his research for his Ph.D., he believes there are agricultural and environmental lessons to take away from the research. The research plots were planted in an area prone to flooding. Gamble learned some things about what grows well in wet sites.

“Native perennials such as prairie cordgrass, native grass mixtures, and shrub willows are better suited to floodplain sites than annual grain crops and are much better at retaining nutrients and sediment on site,” he said. “If we’re serious about improving water quality in Minnesota waterways, perennial buffers are a useful tool that can still provide some economic output such as grazing, hay, and eventually biomass.”

Some of the plantings in the alley cropping system performed better with wet feet than others.

“The alfalfa was originally mixed with the intermediate wheatgrass, but did not persist at our sites beyond the first year due to flooding and competition with wheatgrass,” Gamble said. “On drier sites, alfalfa would likely be a good alley crop.”

What did perform well in the flood-prone areas was the hybrid poplar and prairie cord grass alleys. Not only did they produce the most biomass, but they had the greatest uptake of nitrogen, phosphorous

and potassium. Although the poplar did well in the short term, Gamble believes that the willows might perform quite well over the long run.

Gamble noticed that trees planted in north-south oriented rows created more shade and reduced crop yield compared to west-east oriented rows.

The orientation of tree plantings has a practical application in alley cropping — whether you’re planning to harvest biomass or establishing a grazing and tree crop alley system. Gamble is not aware of alley cropping systems in Minnesota that combine grazing and tree crops but he believes that they have potential.

Gamble points to Missouri where alley cropping is being successfully used to produce pecans, buffalo, wheat and hay at Shepherd Farms near Cliffton Hill, Mo. “Alley cropping can diversify farm income, improve crop production and provide protection and conservation benefits to crops,” according to the Center for Agroforestry at the University of Missouri. “Fine hardwoods like walnut, oak, ash and pecan are favored tree species in alley cropping systems and can potentially provide high value lumber or veneer logs while income is derived from a companion crop planted in the alleyways.”

Whether it’s for burnable biomass, veneer, or sunflowers, alley cropping may have a future in Minnesota’s agriculture. v

PAUL, Minn. — An agroforestry research project conducted by University of Minnesota Ph.D. candidate Joshua Gamble sheds some light on how a mix of trees and agronomic crops can provide farm income and keep soil and nutrients out of waterways in southern Minnesota.

“Our goal for the project was to design multipurpose systems that could provide sustainable field and economic output while also providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, soil retention, nutrient removal and retention, and habitat for pollinators among other things,” said Gamble.

Grazing cover crops requires careful, early planning

By ERIK POSZ The Land Correspondent AMES, Iowa — The Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) held its 2017 annual conference, “Pass It On,” at Iowa State University in Ames on Jan. 20-21.

More than 100 vendors were set up at the event demonstrating products and wares to a packed house. In addition, PFI had a full schedule of educational and informational sessions for attendees.

Offerings covered a broad spectrum of topics, including building soil fertility, natural medicine for livestock, pollinator conservation, tillage practices and winter greenhouses, to name only a few.

Keynote speakers at the event included Susan Jutz, Vic Madsen and Dan Wilson.

Jutz owned and operated ZJ Farm from 1994 until she passed it on to beginning farmer Carmen Black in 2016. ZJ Farm is a diversified vegetable and sheep farm. Jutz also co-founded one of the first Community Supported Agriculture programs in Iowa.

Madsen and his wife, Cindy Madsen, have farmed together since 1970. The Madsens raise corn, soybeans, oats, hay, farrow-to-finish hogs, broilers and beef cattle. Initial on-farm research had them questioning whether they could reduce nitrogen application. This curiosity led the Madsens down a path which took them from 100-percent conventional to 100-percent organic practices.

ate Seven W Farms. Dan began farming with his father in 1972. The Wilsons’ children are the third generation to farm family land. The family raises organic row crops, pastured pork and chickens, dairy cattle, grass-fed lamb and beef, and free-range eggs.

Central to their farming philosophy is ensuring the next generation comes back to the farm, acting as mentors to beginning farmers.

One of the main themes running through the educational and informational sessions was the different uses and applications of cover crops. On the second day of the conference, there were four sessions on cover crops. Loran Steinlage, who farms near West Union, and Chris Teachout, a fifth-generation farmer from Shenandoah, covered the basics of cover crops.

Teachout returned later in the day with Chris Henning to discuss cover crop conservation on rented land. Teachout, a renter, and Henning, a landowner, talked about how cost sharing, conservation plans and risks can be shared and what the benefits are to both players in farming.

Seasonal grazing Mark Schleisman, who runs a diversified family farm near Lake City, shared his experience with seasonal grazing of cover crops in an intense crop and livestock production operation. He and his family raise corn, soybeans, popcorn and popcorn/field corn hybrid seed; as well as hogs and cow-calves.

more passionate about what cover crops can do for his operation. The Schleismans (including children, wife, sons-in-law, uncles and his father) run M&M Farms near Lake City. The operation contains about 4,500 acres, including pastures. Of that land, about 1,200 acres has cover crops on it; 80 percent of those Mark cover crop acres are grazed. Cover Schleisman crops have become an integral part of Schleisman’s operation over the years. But he warned it’s not something you can just jump into.

“Planning is important when it comes to cover crops,” Schleisman said. “You have to plan early to get your seed, or you’re going to be a little bit over a barrel from a cost standpoint. You need to know what you are going to plant where, so you can get the seed in early.”

In addition, Schleisman cautioned that treatments such as herbicides need to be looked at carefully.

“There are some herbicides you can’t use on cover crops if you are going to graze them,” he said. “If you don’t read the label, and you graze the cover crop, you’ll be off-label. I’ve never heard of anyone getting in trouble for that, but it is a real possibility.”

Cattle grazing cover crops can reap big savings PRACTICAL FARMERS, from pg. 10 casting and drilling.

“Seeding method gets tied back into whether you are going to spring graze or fall graze your land, what you’re going to plant, and what you have growing out there at the moment,” Schleisman said. “In our case, 85 to 90 percent of what we plant (for cover crops) get done with a high cycle sprayer converted to blow on cover crops.”

In addition to planning the cover crops themselves, it is also important to plan for having cattle on the crops.

“Fencing is important,” Schleisman said. “There aren’t a lot of fences left. So we utilize electric fences, as most of our fields are close to or on paved roads.

Water (for the cattle) is another consideration. If you don’t have a water source at your field, you may have to haul water. You certainly would want to plant those fields earlier in the season so you aren’t dealing with frozen water.”

As far as spring grazing of cover crops goes, Schleisman said they graze right up the point when the cover crop is burned down. In the fall, the cows can stay on the land even longer.

“One particular field we have is 150 acres,” Schleisman said. “We put 120 cows in there. And they stayed there for about 70 days in the fall.

“One of the favorites of the cows in fall grazing is radishes. They’ll pull them out of the ground if they can. Even if it freezes and the radishes rot, they’ll still eat them. Turnips didn’t do as well for us. We planted rye and turnips. The cows ate the greens off of the turnips, but not the turnips themselves. But also, it hadn’t froze yet. I think had we had a good freeze, the sugar content of the turnips would have been higher, and the cows would have liked them better.”

Economics Schleisman said that, in the end, cover crops need to make economic sense to your operation. There has to be real, measurable value.

“Our farm, along with three other farmers and Practical Farmers of Iowa are part of a research project to determine the economic value of what we are grazing out of these fields,” Schleisman said. “We are just in our second year. But there is a preliminary report out.

“Out of the 320 head I grazed last year in the fall, I had a savings of $71.00 a head, which is huge,” Schleisman said. “Until we did the project, I never really calculated the value. This is huge. My numbers this year will be bigger than $71 a head. And remember, that’s just the fall grazing. That doesn’t include what we got out of cover crops in the spring.”

Schleisman encourages cattle and non-cattle operations alike to take a look at cover crops. He said there are benefits to the cattle and to the land itself.

“The cover crops give you a good root structure,” he said. “The soil takes water much more quickly. There is less compaction. And valuable carbon is added to the soil. For us, grazing on top of these benefits is a real win-win.” v

restructure debt ahead of the growing season.

“This investment will provide important assistance to Minnesota farmers struggling with low commodity prices and rising expenses,” said Gov. Dayton.“I thank the Legislature for moving quickly to pass this bipartisan legislation. I look forward to working with Legislators on additional help for our farm families throughout the Session.”

In addition to helping farmers secure financing, the Rural Finance Authority also offers a variety other programs to strengthen Minnesota farm families and communities. These programs are designed to help new farmers purchase land, restructure debt, invest in farm improvements, and finance livestock production facilities.

The Rural Finance Authority has lacked funding since Dec. 31, 2016, because the Minnesota Legislature failed to pass a bonding bill last session.

Since exhausting the funding, the Authority has been working with local banks to take loan applications, but has been unable to authorize new financing for Minnesota farmers.

“The agriculture industry is the second largest employer in our state and the cornerstone of Minnesota’s economy, but the average farmer is 57 years old,” said Senator Andrew Lang (R-Olivia). “These low interest loans will continue our tradition of supporting family farms, and help young beginning farmers start their own farms or take over their family farms.”

How sustainability can improve your bottom line

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — Sustainability is a tool farmers can use to differentiate their farms, said Steve Peterson, former director of sourcing sustainability at General Mills. He spoke at the Ag Symposium at South Central College in North Mankato on Feb. 14.

“The future is about differentiating yourself,” said Peterson.

Peterson spent half his life working for General Mills and his entire life in agriculture production. He grew up on a farm, and owns and operates Peterson Farms, a crop and Angus beef operation near Paynesville, Minn. He retired from General Mills in 2015.

That’s why when activists showed up in helicopters at the General Mills headquarters in Golden Valley, Peterson was tapped to deal with it.

His response was a sustainability approach.

“Sustainability is not asking you guys to spend more. It’s helping you to be more profitable. Particularly at $3 corn and input prices the way they are today,” said Peterson.

As General Mills celebrates its 150th birthday, Peterson said the company is facing its biggest challenge yet with a steady decline in sales of 5 to 8 percent over the last six years. Consumers are purchasing whole and fresh foods instead of packaged and processed food. Millenials are changing the way food is purchased. They will pay more and they want information.

“Betty Crocker is in assisted living,” said Peterson, also noting that the Green Giant is in an orphanage as it was sold to a company that buys up orphan brands.

So General Mills is diversifying its portfolio. In 2014, the company purchased Annie’s, an organic foods company, for $800 million. Annie’s is currently the fastest growing part of General Mills.

“Food companies, farmers and consumers are moving closer together,” said Peterson.

He spoke directly to young farmers, telling them to think about what consumers want, especially in a world where supply exceeds demand. He told the South Central College ag students they can’t just sit on their end of the supply chain and sell to their co-op.

Peterson considers himself a “gentleman farmer” who employs a farm manager. He does work on the farm any chance he gets. “I’m looking at a consumer-direct model for my farm,” he said.

In turn, General Mills needs to get closer to the farmer so they are developing partnerships with farmers and cooperatives. For example, they have partnered with dairy producers, including Organic Valley. When addressing animal welfare, Peterson brought General Mills staff out to Holden Farms in Northfield.

Sustainability First, General Mills addressed sustainability in its factories by converting to LED lighting and using less water. According to scientists, of the $17 billion in sales, 99 percent of the water use was coming from agriculture and only 1 percent was coming from General Mills factories. As for the carbon footprint, 75 percent was coming from agriculture.

Peterson found that General Mills’ environmental, social responsibility and consumer sentiment footprint was upstream in agriculture. He acknowledges that people buy food based on a sense of emotion, not science.

General Mills’ sustainability sourcing plan calls for 10 ingredients that must be sourced sustainably by 2020. The plan is called 10 by 20. General Mills is halfway to its goal.

One way General Mills is doing this is origin direct investment, which means when they source cocoa and vanilla in Africa, they partnered with farmers and co-ops to give more money and support to farmers. Along the way, he learned that fair trade is a farce and that farmers were not reaping benefits.

For U.S. farmers, the continuous improvement path holds the most promise. Using scientific data, the program measures the footprint of growing corn, oats, wheat, sugar beets, milk and fiber for cardboard. Over time, producers will improve their metrics.

General Mills is part of Field to Market, the leading sustainability network of 120 producers, retailers, government, equipment dealers, seed and chemical companies. The network includes Wal-Mart, Cargill, John Deere, Monsanto, Syngenta and other well knowns. The program defined how to measure the sustainability footprint using metrics addressing land use, soil health, greenhouse gas and electricity.

The goal is improvement, with assistance from scientists and universities. The Field to Market goal is to engage 50 million acres across the United States by 2020. The focus is soybeans, corn, potato, cotton, rice and wheat.

Checking dairy demand, December total cheese disappearance was down 5.7 percent from November and 0.9 percent below December 2015.

HighGround Dairy points out that this is the first month of year-over-year declines since June 2015; but says overall 2016 demand was up 2.6 percent from 2015. Domestic butter disappearance was down from November and down 1.7 percent from a year ago.

Annual butter usage for both domestic and export demand increased 4 percent over 2015.

Cheese production is active as producers try to balance inventories while maintaining production to coincide with the surplus milk receipts. Demand reports vary.

Some cheese manufacturers report fluctuations in demand week by week, inconsistent with past years.

Others report a general slowdown in demand, characteristic of this time of year. Buyers are reportedly viewing the CME barrel to block inversion as a sign of instability. Inventories of both are long.

CORN — Corn traded the first half of the holidayshortened week on the positive side, but the second half of the week erased gains. Corn traded to its lowest level since Feb. 7, as it closed out the week on a soft note. The expiration of March options on Feb. 24 likely helped nearby corn stay near the popular $3.70 strike price. We could be setting up for a lower trading range into the March 31 U.S. Department of Agriculture Planting Intentions and Grain Stocks reports. Highlighting the week, but not really being recognized as a big market mover, were the updated acreage and balance sheets released at the USDA’s February Outlook Forum held on Feb. 23 and 24. For the 2017-18 crop year, USDA is initially looking at acreage to fall to 90 million acres, down 4 million acres from last year’s 94 million planted acres. The trade estimate was 91 million acres. Using a yield of 170.7 bushels per acre (174.6 bu./acre last year), production is forecast at 14.065 billion bushels vs. 15.148 billion bushels last year. The carryout for 2017-18 was projected at 2.215 billion bushels when the trade was expecting a number closer to 2.0 billion bushels.

The 2016-17 carryout is being carried at 2.32 billion bushels.

The cash cattle and hog markets are definitely the leaders in the livestock marketplace these past several weeks. The futures markets appear to be very hesitant at the moment to be the leaders in establishing the direction of both cattle and hog markets at the current time. Both are now discount to recent cash transactions, which could be that the futures are signaling a possible direction change in the current rallies in prices for both markets.

Time will lend the answer to this question.

Looking at the cattle market, the current strength in cash pricJOE TEALE es is due mainly to the relative Broker tight supplies of market-ready Great Plains Commodity cattle at the present time. The Afton, Minn. futures market on the other hand, is looking at the potential increase in supplies indicated in the last several U.S. Department of Agriculture reports. Export demand has picked up during the first part of the year which is encouraging. However, domestic demand for beef continues to drag well behind previous years. The competition for meat protein continues to be fierce, and the lower-priced chicken and pork per pound seem to be attracting the domestic consumer more than beef. If all indications by the USDA reports prove to be correct, the anticipation by the futures market will likely prove to be correct and cattle prices are likely to decline into the summer months.

As we head into the month of March, the cattle market will be entering the crossroads that will likely determine the direction of the cattle market for the next several months. Producers should continue to

Lack of export news holds down soybean price 4.3 billion bushel crop. Carryout for 2017-18 was projected at 420 million bushels, the exact number as the 2016-17 crop year. The trade was expecting a bigger number, but no one jumped on a bandwagon to rally prices. I would expect that the trade will continue to anticipate a larger number between 450 and 500 million bushels on subsequent reports. Changes on the usage side vs. last year included an increase in crush of 15 million bushels to 1.945 billion bushels and an increase in exports of 75 million bushels to 2.125 billion bushels.

Weekly exports sales were crummy at just 15.2 million bushels. We have been fairly consistent at 25 percent ahead of last year with 1.9 billion bushels of total commitments. This accounts for 93.4 percent of the USDA’s 2.05 billion bushel export forecast. New crop exports are on pace with last year at 55 million bushels versus 51.3 million bushels last year.

Outlook: In May soybeans, from the previous week’s high of $10.73.25 to this week’s low of $10.20, we were down 53.25 cents. For the week, May soybeans were down 19 cents at $10.24.25 per bushel; July was also down 19 cents at $10.33.25; and November beans were off 11.25 cents at $10.07 per bushel. May soymeal tumbled $8.20 lower at $335.70 and soyoil decreased 49 ticks to 32.67 cents per pound. As forecasts for South America’s soybean crop continue to increase and weather cooperates, supply will cast a shadow over prices. Next support for old crop is the $10.00 per bushel level with resistance near $10.50 per bushel.

Looking at year-to-year changes in the demand categories, ethanol is expected to increase 50 million to 5.4 billion, feed, seed and industrial up 25 million to 1.44 billion, feed down 150 million to 5.45 billion and exports 325 million lower to 1.9 billion bushels.

The discrepancy in the carryout of expectations to actual was largely ignored. Interestingly, the total acreage for the eight major crops is expected to fall by 3.6 million acres, resulting in the smallest acreage since 2011.

Weekly export sales were a disappointment at 29.3 million bushels when they came in under the lowest trade guess. Our pace ahead of last year continues to deteriorate. We are 61 percent ahead of last year with 1.68 billion bushels of total commitments. This represents nearly 75 percent of the USDA’s total export forecast for 2.25 billion bushels of exports.

New crop sales are increasing their lead over last year with 61.6 million bushels on the books versus 56.3 million last year at this time. AgroConsult in Brazil issued a corn production estimate of 93 million metric tons! This compares to the USDA’s 86.5 mmt estimate. Argentina’s Ag Minister put their corn crop at 40 mmt, much higher than USDA’s 36.5 mmt estimate.

Weekly ethanol production slid for the third week in a row by 6,000 barrels per day to 1.034 million bpd day. Despite the weekly decline, production is still running 4 percent higher than last year. Seasonally, ethanol production is beginning to slow. Ethanol stocks were up 7 million gallons to 952 million gallons. Crush margins were 3 cents higher for the week at 7 cents per gallon.

Outlook: For the week, May corn fell 4.75 cents to $3.70.75, July was 4.25 cents lower at $3.78.25 and December corn lost 3.25 cents at $3.91 per bushel. It is way too early to take the Outlook

Forum’s balance sheets at face value. There’s too much uncertainty over what the U.S. grower will actually plant, weather conditions, South American supplies, demand, and world politics. The March 31 Planting Intentions and Grain Stocks reports will be the next major reports. Underlying demand has helped curb losses in corn, but I would expect further downside in the coming months. If you have not started making new crop sales or added downside protection to new crop bushels, consider doing so on any bounce.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans finally rolled over this week on negative factors that have been lying around for some time. Without fresh money supporting the market, prices collapsed. There were no fresh export sales announced during the week and South American weather was a non-event, as estimates for Brazil’s soybean crop continue to rise.

AgroConsult raised its Brazilian soybean production estimate 2.5 mmt to 107.8 mmt, well above USDA’s 104 mmt outlook. It is projecting Brazilian exports at 61.1 mmt vs. USDA’s 59.7 mmt forecast.

AgroConsult has Argentina’s beans at 54 mmt, slightly lower than USDA’s 55.5 mmt estimate. It would seem reasonable that any small loss in Argentina’s production will be more than offset by gains in Brazil. Adding pressure this week was the expiration of March options. The $10.20 strike price was popular. The market agreed as prices trended lower to slightly below that level at expiration.

The USDA Outlook Forum provided little in the way of surprises. The initial acreage for the 2017-18 crop was pegged at 88 million acres, up 4.6 million acres from last year’s 83.4 million planted acres. The trade’s pre-report estimate was 87.6 million acres.

Since last October, the hog market has made a remarkable recovery in price due mainly to reduced numbers and continued good demand for pork products. Bacon appears to be the main catalyst behind the strong demand for pork products as most dishes seem to be garnished with bacon these days. An interesting development occurred with the futures market as the February contract expired. The next month April contract became the lead contract on the weekly charts at a relative big discount to the expiring February contract. This created a weekly reversal which can signal the end of the current

price direction; which in this case would signal a top in the current rally in prices.

There has been a lot of discussion about the increase in slaughter capacity which is expected to be available in the near future. This has supported ideas that hog prices will remain firm.

On the flip side, all indications are that hog numbers are on the increase as noted by the latest USDA Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report. This sets the tone for a real battle between supply and demand in the upcoming months.

This would suggest that producers should be very cognizant of market conditions and current price direction and protect inventories as warranted.v

Arts on the ice

F

rom a distance, the collection of shacks clustered on White Bear Lake could be mistaken for any ice fishing colony in Minnesota. As you get closer, you realize there are a lot of people milling around the shacks. Closer still, you can feel the pulsing thump of dance music. This is definitely scaring away the fish. When the giant polar bear on bicycle wheels passes by, you know you’re not in Kansas anymore. Welcome to Art Shanty Projects.

The Art Shanty Projects may just be the most fun you can have on a frozen lake without buying a license or a ticket for that matter.

The Alice-in-Wonderlandmeets-Cabela’s exposition was hatched in 2004 when artist Peter Haakon Thompson built a single “art shack” on Medicine Lake in Plymouth. Using discarded plywood and help from some friends, Thompson created an art studio on ice and invited others to spend time there as a winter lake retreat. The ice house evolved into a giant camera obscura. Thompson and friends held film screenings, shoveled a heart-shaped skating rink for Valentine’s Day, and conducted a number of cold sleepovers.

The next year Thompson enlisted co-director David Pitman to recruit artists and builders to create a fleet of ice houses. By 2007, the Art Shanty Projects were in full swing — securing funds from

the McKnight Foundation for artist stipends. A jury process was developed to screen builders and performers. Today, the Art Shanty Projects has a staff and board of directors and a growing number of devotees.

Because there are no building codes for ice shanties, artists and builders were able to stretch their imaginations and create not just structures, but interactive experiences unique to each shanty. Some of the projects in the past have included an indoor forest, a round knitting room, two sauna shanties (one in a repurposed airstream trailer), a giant robot, a toy shack with stuffed animals for insulation inside clear plastic walls, a shanty for drinking tea, and a personal favorite: The Dance Shanty.

There are thought-provoking shanties featuring free-verse poetry created by visitors; a shanty for delivering good wishes and karma to those in need; an astrology shanty. For the more activeinclined there has been basketball, bowling and lacrosse. Last year, visitors could occupy one of eight bicycles and propel a 15-foot polar bear around the grounds.

There are usually about 20 different shanties and activities to partake in, along with musicians and performers. On nicer days, artists bring their easels and paint — capturing the goings-on. Sundays at 1 p.m. features the parade of art-cars and art-bicycles.

The Art Shanty Projects take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends through February about 1,500 feet offshore of White Bear Lake County Park. Dress for cold weather and snow. Boots, snow pants, coat, hats, mittens, scarf, Yax Trax (shoe spikes) are highly recommended — even on the nicest days. If there is no snow cover on the lake, the ice is quite slippery.
