life, always keep moving forward, no matter what happens or how far away our dreams are. Always keep sight of the shore. We will get there eventually if we are patient.

Beauty comes in all forms. Waves come in all shapes and sizes, just like people. But it doesn’t matter the shape or size of the wave. There is beauty in every single one, big or small.

Humility is good. Often times, small, softly-lapping waves bring as much joy as their louder, faster counterparts. Like soft waves, softly spoken words can have a significant impact.

Smooth out the shore sand. Forgiveness can be difficult to master; but just as the ocean water comes up to the shore and smooths it out, so must we be able to do that when someone wrongs us.

Write peoples’ transgressions in the sand, not in stone. Stones are unyielding.

Blue is beautiful. No matter how many shades of blue make up the ocean, there is beauty in every shade. When we are blue, God is holding us. Life is layered in shades of blue.

Leave something beautiful behind. The ocean waves leave gifts behind for us in beautiful, delicate seashells. Not one is the same as another, just as we are all different. As we work toward our final shoreline, always aim to leave something beautiful — our legacy — behind.

And finally, find a way to crash. Waves crash and return to the ocean. It’s what they do. As farm people doing difficult, demanding work, it’s important to “crash” (rest) when necessary, so we can return to our important work. So there we were.

Resting. Recharging.

And thinking about ways the ocean reminded us about life.

The current buffer bill by the state of Minnesota is an unlawful act of discrimination. It is also an unlawful act of targeting. It is also an unlawful act of profiling. It is an unlawful act of preying on a select group of property owners who have no legal way of protecting and defending themselves. It is loaded with partisan compromises.

Repeal the current buffer bill and start over with a bill that is equitable, right, and fair to everyone.

Years ago, McLendon married Douglass’ only daughter and when she committed suicide, Douglass blamed McLendon. If Brautigan succeeded in bringing McLendon back alive, and in a timely manner, Douglass might even let him watch McLendon die.

But catching McLendon wouldn’t be easy; the man was sociable and always surrounded by people, so Brautigan had to hire help in the form of Ike Clanton, who flapped his gums too much. Even so, Clanton could take Brautigan through Apache country, to Mountain View from Silver City, a lawless and corrupt new settlement where Brautigan had recently arrived to study the situation.

Brautigan figured that capturing McLendon would surely be easier if McLendon’s woman was taken first. Capturing McLendon and getting him back to Silver City, however, would be a whole different matter …

Though you could read it by itself, its characters have been featured in past books and, as such,

author Jeff Guinn spends too much time explaining their back-story here. That gets too awfully wordy and pretty tiresome. Cash McLendon is a goodenough hero, although not scruffy enough for my tastes; he’s too clean-cut, too gosh-darn nice, a bit of a dandy.

To the good, however, Guinn gives readers a good chase up and through the Arizona desert, an exciting fight with a young Geronimo and his men, and a scrappy new heroine with a definite mind of her

Bayer-Monsanto merger may increase product choices

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor MANKATO, Minn. — Many farmers are wondering how mergers between big ag companies will affect their bottom line. Monsanto and Bayer executives participated in the Jan. 25 keynote panel at the MN Ag EXPO 2017 to address the impact of mergers on agriculture.

John Smith, vice president for Bayer CropScience, and Scott Partridge, vice president of global strategy for Monsanto, said the merger will be positive for producers in Scott Partridge that there will be more products and lower prices for chemical and seed. The BayerMonsanto merger is going through the

regulatory process and is expected to close this year.

Here’s the rationale behind the merger. Bayer is a chemical company that develops pesticides while Monsanto is a biological company that develops genetically modified seed.

Combining the research and development resources of these two major companies can get products to market faster than they can on their own.

“I think we will save money doing that,” said Partridge.

For example, Partridge explained that it can take Bayer 10 to 12 years to develop a herbicide. Then Monsanto must take that new chemical molecule and create a trait to make the plant tolerant to the herbicide, which could take another six to 10 years and $150 million in research and development.

“That’s why biological and chemical together is a good fit,” Partridge said.

— John Smith By merging chemical and biological companies, Partridge explained the R&D can be working in parallel instead of separately. Over six years, the merger will put $16 billion in research to link genetics and chemistry. Half of that will be spent in the United States.

Partridge expects the savings from consolidation, including in R&D, will be passed on to farmers.

One producer expressed concern that Monsanto would no longer be a U.S. owned company as Bayer, a German company, will own Monsanto.

Partridge noted that Monsanto negotiated that St. Louis remain the North American hub and the global R&D headquarters for the company.

“It’s the right thing to do for our farmers and our shareholders,” said Partridge.

Both Smith and Partridge contend that genetically modified seed is necessary to feed the world based on the statistics that world population is expected to grow from 7.5 billion in 2017 to 10 billion by 2050. Partridge called it a “daunting challenge.

“There are niche markets that exist, non-GMO, organic, locally grown, but that’s not going to feed the world,” said Smith. “To feed the hungry children that go to bed every night in foreign countries without a meal, there’s only

one way to do it and that’s to increase production.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average U.S. corn yield was 175 bushels per acre in 2016.

Smith said the goal of Bayer and Monsanto is to develop the tools to increase the yield in 30 years to 250 bu./acre. Farmers need to get maximum production off each acre.

Brian Buhr, dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota, explained that Minnesota has 51 million arable Brian Buhr acres and we are currently farming 24 million acres.

Without the technology of livestock and plant genetics, fertilizers, feed and pesticides, Minnesotans would have to farm all 51 million acres and another 6 million acres in Canada to meet the same production level, he said.

“How do we feed those people and sustain our environment?” asked Buhr.

“That is our fundamental challenge.”

Producers and panel members agreed on the importance of telling this story to consumers. Smith noted that farmers and companies need to come together to tell the story, not only with facts, but also with emotions.

“We have to do a better job selling what we’re doing on our farms to people,” said Bernie Zinda, soybean, corn and wheat grower near Bernie Zinda Holloway. v

Destree continues to be very positive about organic crop production, primarily because it is such a consumer-driven industry. He recalled, “Back in the startup days of the 1980s, industry people were telling us 15 percent growth per year is what we should expect. We’re still hearing 15 percent growth projections. Right now we’re over a $48 billion industry.”

Organic agriculture may be good for the soil. An analysis of 74 studies of the soils in fields under organic or conventional farming practices found that over time, the carbon content in the organic fields significantly increased.

This conclusion means organic agriculture results in a richer, more productive soil with plenty of humus.

industry is advising a wannabe organic grower that he or she may be facing too many challenges.

“You’ve got to be focused on the commitment to organic,” Destree stressed.

“It’s not a matter of going out there for the money. You go out there with a lifestyle committed to being an organic producer.”

Having a market agreement is vital before planting your first organic seeds.

Most organic crops are contracted and growers generally have marketing agreements for each crop. At the Minnesota Organic Conference, growers could visit various exhibitors to get 2017 contract prices on soybeans, corn, milk and more. For 2017, $7.50 per bushel was the talk for corn; soybeans $20 a bushel. Soybeans with clear hilums could be a couple of dollars per bushel more. And for the edible beans, anywhere from 75 cents to 80 cents for

Destree said at this time, there is nothing available in terms of chemical control at least not with lasting results.

He did some work with a high-pH product in the East Grand Forks area this past season.

“Our goal was to get rid of some thistles, which we did, but eventually they grew back. We used an alkali product. Right now, this is a non-listed product. I used it as a blend with other products. When you have weed problems, it’s generally a manganese deficiency in about 40 percent of the weeds.

It’s also a boron deficiency; so I blend these various elements together and then customize the mix,” he explained.

Destree noted the alkali soils and alkali waters of northern Minnesota contrasted with the higher pH soils of southern Minnesota, generally about 7.5 and 6.8 of the waters.

“So in southern Minnesota, I’m testing with an acid-based product for organic weed control,” said Destree. “This mixture kills giant ragweed. But the problem is, giant ragweed springs up again about two weeks later. We’ve got branded chemicals that no longer kill giant ragweed; but this organic chemical in the form of an acid literally fries the ragweed, burning it right to the ground.”

This suggests repeat applications, said Destree, but because giant ragweed is generally a 1 or 2-acre problem, in a larger field, additional spot treatments should not be an issue.

Today he is a consultant in organic crop production and The Land caught up with him at the Minnesota Organic Conference, held Jan. 12-13 in St. Cloud.

“I had to learn on my own,” he said.

“We simply didn’t have the educational environment on the do’s and don’t’s like we have today. The need for consulting was very evident. So that was my next endeavor and here we are.”

Destree currently works for the Madison, Wis., firm Organic Marketing Inc. “I’ve always got people wanting help on how to transition into organic and how to do organic once certified,” he said.

As a consultant, Destree is most often asked, “How do we get rid of weeds?” As you might expect, there is no one answer.

“I’ve got a combination of items and usually talk about the top ten things,” Destree explained. “It starts with soil nutrition and the management of nutrients in the soil. Then I talk mechanical weed control systems including cultivation, flaming, several minimum tillage tools such as tine weeders, drags, etc., depending upon what you have for soil types. Today, many growers now have GPS systems which permits working within one-and-a-half inches of the rows. That absolutely helps.”

Brazilian tours ag companies, learns global economics

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer OLIVIA, Minn. — His home is Maceio, Brazil, just three blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. Yet Matheus Baumgarten enjoyed a sixday holiday stay in Olivia with Pam Dettman and John Dotson. He’s currently doing a graduate internship Matheus at South Dakota State University- Baumgarten Brookings.

Baumgarten’s graduate thesis is titled: “Risk hedge analysis of commodity freight cost: Case study of Alagoas sugar maritime freight.” Alagoas, his home state, has a shipping port and the thesis relates to freight costs for both brown sugar and ethanol to foreign ports, including the United States. He’s from a sugar cane production area of Brazil where cane is the number-one gross income generator. Sugar cane is a plant harvested every six to seven years.

“Weather is basically the same year-round because we’re just a hundred miles south of the equator,” Baumgarten said. “Summer temps are in the 90s; winter it drops to the 70s. Comfortable temperatures since we don’t get sticky hot like in the rain forests which get daily rains. Our winds are mostly gentle.”

“Favorite hangout with my friends is the beach and 90 degree temps,” he said. “So suddenly experiencing minus 32 degree wind chill and 10 below zero temps was a bit of a challenge.”

economics and production engineering. Baumgarten is enjoying the culture of the SDSU campus. Having grown up playing soccer, he is impressed by the new SDSU football stadium.

On his first day in the department of economics, a professor invited him to sit in with an investment club. Club members were international including students from China and Ghana. The U.S. students extended their hospitality by offering him rides to stores.

“Also, they helped me access computers and programs about your economic and marketing systems, especially in your basic commodities such as wheat, corn and soybeans. So lots of help for me,” he said.

Baumgarten plans to do engineering work in Brazil after he completes his internship here. His economics degree may not be part of this engineering work, but he says it should help him better understand the world.

“After coming here to SDSU, I can see how my two majors combine to enhance value to a potential employer. I didn’t realize until I came here I can work in marketing, hedging and logistics. This simulated grain exchange facility at SDSU is a terrific learning center,” he said. “When I learn about trading basis when marketing beets, you also think about logistic and product engineering. And then of course, marketing and economics wrap up the entire education package.”

percent sugar cane ethanol. In his small state, roughly 22 million metric tons of sugar cane production is processed each season from 34,000 hectares (850,000 acres). Worldwide, Brazil is the biggest producer of ethanol. From Alagoas, Baumgarten estimates 70 percent of their total sugar and ethanol production is exported. Russia is the biggest buyer of both products, but the United States also purchases both Brazilian sugar and ethanol, he noted.

“But because ethanol is 30 percent less efficient than gasoline, ethanol fuels need to be 30 percent cheaper to be cost effective for the consumer,” Baumgarten explained. “So our ethanol industry is suffering financially right now, especially with cheaper oil prices around the world. Input costs keep increasing. Yes, I am learning that production costs for corn here in America are considerably higher than our costs to grow sugar cane.”

The sugar processing plants make brown sugar.

“We make good use of the biomass residue. We use it as energy to power our sugar plants. So our sugar plants are self-sufficient and don’t contribute any greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This is clean energy,” said Baumgarten.

Culture trip “America is a country of significant contrasts,” said Baumgarten. “You have your major cities on both coastal areas with populations in the millions; you have your town of Olivia with 2,500 people; and Brookings with 20,000 or so. Yet the infrastructure in your towns and cities is so complete.”

His home state of Alagoas, Brazil, has 2.5 million people. The capitol is 1.2 million, but there is not much connection for health care and services outside of major cities.

“In the rural areas, the richer people are the land owners … many of which don’t live on their land.

They hire people to run their farms, take care of their livestock. The land owner just shows up occasionally to see how things are going. So there is little economic growth amongst the poorer, working class because their only opportunity is where they already are,” Baumgarten said.

He observed that the money in the United States seems to be more evenly distributed. He noted that the Brazil working class averages about $300 per month.

“In Brazil, you mostly have to look at the three big majors for good jobs after graduation. That would be law, medical and engineering to earn the bigger salary,” he said. “People go to the bigger cities just hoping to, at least, get service jobs.”

He expressed genuine appreciation for Minnesota nice.

“Visiting with the various ag business people was a treat,” he said. “You have such an open and friendly environment in business, church and community.

This is a new experience for me and I will share with others these good things about the America I have now had the pleasure to visit.” v

Producers should be aware that enterprise units are based on larger coverage areas, and do not necessarily cover losses from isolated storms or crop damage that affect individual farm units, so additional insurance, such as hail insurance, may be required to insure against these type of losses.

Insurance premiums for 2017 should be similar to 2016 crop insurance products.

Use caution in moving forward with area risk protection (ARP) crop insurance plans. Some insurance companies and analysts have been promoting the ARP crop insurance option for 2017, due to the ability to purchase up to the 90 percent coverage level, using the same price structure as RP policies. However, be aware that ARP policies use countylevel yields for APH yield guarantees and final harvest yields, whereas RP policies utilize the farm APH yields to calculate the initial insurance guarantee. There would also be no yield protection against isolated yield losses on individual farm units with APH policies. APH works best if your primary risk management concern is price protection, but not as well if you are also concerned with yield risk. In many cases, premium levels for a 90 percent ARP policy are as high or higher, com-

Given the tight profit margins for crop production in 2017, some producers may have a tendency to reduce their crop insurance coverage, in order to save a few dollars per acre. However, a producer must first decide: “How much financial risk can I handle if there are greatly reduced crop yields due to potential weather problems in 2017, and/or lower than expected crop prices?” RP crop insurance policies serve as an excellent risk management tool for these situations, and 2017 may not be the year to reduce insurance coverage. However, if a producer has farm units that are more spread out geographically, with more variation in soil types and drainage, and has greater concerns with yield variability, they may want to give consideration to a RP policy with optional units.

Some producers had significant 2016 crop losses on some farm units and not on other farms, especially on corn, but had enterprise units for 2016 crop insurance coverage, and collected little or no crop insurance indemnity payments. However, in many cases where producers that had significant crop losses in 2016 and had optional units for insurance coverage, they were able to realize fairly significant crop insurance indemnity payments for 2016 crop losses.

Many times, producers automatically opt for enterprise units every year, due to the lower premium cost per acre for similar coverage. It is important to analyze the yield risk on each individual farm unit, when determining if paying the extra premium for insurance coverage with optional units makes sense. If a producer has uniform soil types and drainage, in a close geographical area, and is primarily concerned with a price decline, a RP policy with enterprise units is probably a good option.

With agriculture’s cyclical nature, we’ve seen our young and beginning farmers struggle to gain equity in an existing operation. Additionally, with prices like we’ve had over the past few years, farm families are avoiding their succession plans. This makes it hard for second or third generation farmers to build equity and take more ownership in the farm.

While this is common, it doesn’t have to be that way.

There are obstacles out of your control, but you can take the step into ownership with contract growing. If you’re starting to consider contract growing, here are five benefits that you should be aware of.

Long-term equity growth A new swine finishing barn, on average, costs $290 to $330 per space. The cost is highly dependent on the size and style of the facility. For many, building this size of facility will require a large loan, which aren’t always easy for a young or beginning farmer to acquire. Because of the contracted income source, however, some lenders will utilize customized underwriting standards, making it more feasible to build a hog barn as compared to purchasing land or other long-term farm assets. CORN — Corn pushed higher into the monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, which was released on Feb. 9, on strength from soybeans and fund buying.

Post-report fund buying extended the gains to levels not seen since last June! South American weather became a moot issue with some private estimates adding back bushels that were thought to have been lost to flooding. Fresh highs for the move were hit in post-report trading when world carryout numbers PHYLLIS NYSTROM came in lower than anticipated.

CHS Hedging Inc. March corn topped out the week St. Paul at $3.75.5 per bushel and December at $3.99.75 per bushel.

The recap of the WASDE Feb. 9 report: U.S. ending stocks were cut 35 million bushels from January to 2.32 billion bushels compared to an unchanged estimate. This was accomplished with an increase in corn usage for ethanol of 25 million bushels to 5.35 billion bushels and a 10 million bushel increase in non-ethanol feed, seed and industrial use.

On an annualized basis, ethanol production is averaging 5.52 billion bushels. The ethanol usage category is expected to be increased on subsequent reports. The stocks-to-use ratio at 15.8 percent is the biggest since 2006. The average farm price range narrowed a dime on each end to $3.20 to $3.60 per bushel. The average farm price for 2015-16 was $3.61 per bushel.

Overall, the hog market has been the leader in price rises in the livestock complex so far this month. Thus far the rallies which have taken place appear to be no more than recovery rallies in a bear market. Now, is there followthrough to break the long term downtrend in livestock prices?

The cattle market is now struggling with supply/demand which will ultimately determine the future direction of prices in the months ahead.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released two reports in the later JOE TEALE days of January which both indiBroker cated that cattle numbers are on Great Plains Commodity the increase. The first report Afton, Minn. released was the Monthly Cattle on Feed report which surprised the trade with more than anticipated placements during the previous month. Then the USDA released the Cattle Inventory report that indicated cattle numbers were greater than anticipated. The futures market immediately sold off going to a discount and the cash market soon followed.

The challenge right now for the market is, immediate market-ready cattle are tight, packers are still in positive margins and are somewhat aggressive in trying to accumulate live inventory. On the other side of the supply/demand equation, beef movement is slow which has been documented by the continually increasing quantities in cold storage. Therefore, in the short run, cattle prices may hold or even rally; but in the longer term, unless beef begins to move better, the supply will weigh on futures prices.

Producers should remain alert to market conditions

Beans trend upward on fund money, China demand NYSTROM , from pg. 15 220.8 mmt trade estimate. The reduction stemmed from a decrease in China’s ending stocks from 106.3 mmt last month to 102.3 mmt this month. Private reports put China’s reserves up toward 200 mmt plus, so the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s number may be suspect.

Still, world corn stocks are at a record high and stocks-to-use of 21 percent is the second highest in 15 years.

The USDA left Brazil’s corn production estimate unchanged from last month at 86.5 mmt. Conab had raised their Brazilian corn expectation from 84.5 mmt to 87.4 mmt. Argentine corn was also steady at 36.5 mmt, but above the 35.6 mmt estimate. The Rosario Grain Exchange upped Argentina’s corn production by 1 mmt to 36.5 mmt.

Brazil’s export line-up as of Feb. 7 showed approximately 4.7 mmt to load this month, up from last year’s 2.0 mmt loadings. If it comes to fruition, it would be record loadings for February. China’s

Ministry of Agricultural anticipates they will only import 800,000 metric tons of corn this year.

Weekly ethanol production was down 6,000 barrels per day in the week that ended Feb. 3 to 1.055 million barrels per day. Despite the production decline, it was still the second largest production number on record! Ethanol stocks continue to creep higher, up 200,000 barrels to 22.1 million barrels. The ethanol crush margin rose from 2 cents per gallon to 9 cents per gallon. This reinforces the increase in the corn for ethanol usage category on the USDA report. Weekly export sales were in line with expectations at 38.3 million bushels. Total commitments are 1.6 billion bushels which is 73 percent of the USDA projection.

Outlook: For the week, March corn gained 9.25 cents to $3.74.5, July up 9 cents at $3.88.75 and December corn up 6.5 cents at $3.99.25 per bushel. March corn tested and held support at $3.62.5

Access to manure For many crop farmers, finish barns provide a steady and historically inexpensive way to access manure for fertilizer. It’s important to compare the cost of commercial fertilizer to manure nutrients to determine the actual value that manure has as fertilizer. Integrators and consulting companies have nutrient analysis tools to identify manure values.

They are a great resource in helping conclude a proper manure value.

Depreciation Accelerated depreciation for the barn often offsets other farm income which can be used as part of a tax plan for an individual. Always consult your tax professional before making any taxbased decisions.

Transition plan For someone looking to move equity or assets to the next generation, building a contract barn can be advantageous. There are a few different approaches to consider. Some of the more simple options include gifting land for the site, pledging collateral for the loan or by guaranteeing the loan.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans shrugged off the key reversal lower from Feb. 3 to pop sharply higher this week.

Seasonally, soybeans display an uptrend in February. Fund money and expectations of Chinese demand seemed to be the biggest drivers of the rally, but excellent export inspections early in the week didn’t hurt.

The much anticipated WASDE report was generally uneventful for soybeans.

No changes were made on the U.S. supply/demand balance sheets. The U.S. ending stocks number was unchanged from January. The average farm price was unchanged at $9.50 per bushel.

World ending stocks dropped from 82.3 mmt last month to 80.4 mmt this month on Argentina’s production cut.

This, however, was close to the 80.9 mmt trade estimate. China’s import prediction was left alone at 86 mmt. This category could rise in coming months based on China’s January soybean import data. They imported 7.66 mmt of soybeans in January, up an impressive 35 percent from last year and the biggest number ever for January. Using this rate, their imports could increase an estimated 2 mmt, one-third of which could be sourced from the United States.

Argentina’s soybean production was pegged at 55.5 mmt by the USDA versus estimates for 54.5 mmt and last month’s 57 mmt. The Rosario Grain Exchange raised its Argentine bean production forecast 1.6 mmt to 54.4 mmt.

If contract growing is of interest to you, the next step is to connect with an integrator. When looking for specific leads on which integrators have pods in your region, or who is looking for additional space, use your local network for information and guidance.

Your lender, county feedlot officer, local feed mill managers or your state pork producers association should be able to point you in the right direction.

farmers had sold 38 percent of this year’s bean crop versus 44 percent sold on average. This means more sales are yet to come and at the end of February it’s believed they will have bills to pay.

We are also hearing that South America is looking at developing stronger ties to Mexico in case the United States has a trade war with Mexico.

Weekly export sales were neutral and at the lower end of expectations, but very good for the products. Soybean sales were the third lowest of the marketing year, but still within estimates, at 19.7 million bushels. Total soybean commitments stand at 1.887 billion bushels which is 91 percent of the USDA forecast. Meal sales were 347,700 metric tons and above expectations. Soyoil sales at 35,300 metric tons were nearly double expectations.

Outlook: Weather threats to the South American crop are diminishing and talk of Chinese demand were factors in this week’s action. In the end, fund buying pushed prices higher, but a neutral to negative soybean report limited further upside. Eventually, we should see slower U.S. exports as South American harvest and shipping picks up. The market is also anticipating a significant increase to this year’s U.S. soybean acreage. This combination may make further strength difficult to sustain.

First support in March soybeans comes in at $10.35.5 with resistance at $10.80 per bushel. For the week, both March and July soybeans rallied 32 cents to $10.59 and $10.77.75 per bushel respectively. November soybeans were 20.25 cents higher at $10.30 per bushel. March soymeal jumped $10.50 higher to $342.10 and soyoil oil was up 75 ticks at 34.61 cents per pound. v

Hogs continue to rally TEALE, from pg. 15 and protect inventories if necessary.

The hog market continues to be on an excellent rally from the lows made last October (low $40s basis lean) to now crossing the $70 level basis lean.

The good demand for pork started this rally; and tighter-than-expected numbers added to carry the market to a $30 rally basis lean.

As pork cutouts have moved higher, the movement of pork has slightly slowed in the past few weeks. If this uptrend is to continue, the demand for pork products will have to remain

strong if not improved. It would appear the hog market is approaching a crossroads which will determine the direction prices will take into the next several months. From a technical standpoint, the futures market is currently overbought, so a corrective action could take place. As to whether this signifies the end of the rally or just a pause in the rally will be determined by the demand for pork and packer margins.

Because of the current conditions affecting the market at this time, producers should monitor the market conditions and protect inventories as needed. v

In the Precision Agronomy Panel, producers and their agronomists discussed how they have adopted the practice in their operations.

Kevin Poppel, president of Poppel Family Farms near Albert Lea, participated with his agronomist Kevin Kruise, who oversees Central Advantage at Central Farm Service. Kruise helps producers collect and organize data to make more informed decisions.

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor MANKATO, Minn. — The 2017 AgStar Technoledge Conference, held in Mankato on Jan. 19, attracted roughly 100 producers who previewed the future of agriculture technology and learned how to better use the tools and data they already have.

Farmers learned about drones, autonomous tractors, precision agronomy, crop modeling, precision fertilization and data analysis.

“It’s exciting to see what’s coming and the speed of the technology these days on everything. It will happen and we have to not be intimidated by it,” said Lynn Becker, who farms near Fairmont and operates sow farms in the Pipestone System.

Over lunch, producers talked and learned from each other. Pat Barnett and his dad, Don Barnett, farm corn and beans near Kilkenny. A farmer at the table asked Pat if it was easy to convince his dad to use new technology. The answer was yes.

“We knew we had to get into it to keep up with the times,” said Don.

Where do you start? Poppel recommends grid sampling, which is soil sampling on areas within fields.

Kevin Lahr, who farms near Sauk Kevin Lahr Centre, has been using precision agronomy since 1996. Lahr explained that grid sampling allows you to see which areas of the field have the best yield. Then seeds and fertilizer can be used in varying rates. The first time we wrote our prescriptions, said Lahr, we thought we’d be good for four years. However, data is not static.

“We used those prescriptions for one year,” said Lahr. “It was the best decision we could make with the information we had at the time.”

Return on investment Producers are seeing a return on investment. On Lahr’s land, grid sampling meant fertilizing in areas that are yielding best and pulling back on areas that were not yielding well. Lahr learned that in some areas, fertility was not the issue, but rather the issue was drainage or elevation.

“I can’t say we saved a lot of money on fertilizer, but we sure spent it in better places,” said Lahr. “We started spending our money where it could bring the

Then you can run the right prescription for your seed and fertilizer. Be sure to look at your return on investment on a zone basis, not across your whole operation.

Lahr’s agronomist scouts his fields every week.

Lahr makes decisions based on his agronomist’s recommendations on what to spray and when to spray throughout the growing season. Centrol created zones, fertility maps, variable rate seeding and fertilizer prescriptions. Lahr also appreciates Centrol’s unbiased view of seeds.

“We put a very high value on the relationships we developed over the years with our production partners,” said Lahr.

Above all, Poppel said you need to understand what your biggest limiting factor is so you can address it with trusted advisors. For instance, he is considering buying a multi-hybrid planter that can plant different seed hybrids based on field conditions. His next step is to sit down with his agronomist, seed supplier and banker.

In addition, knowing your cost of production is a must. Before investing in a technology, your agronomist can look at data to see how it can work in your operation or make a projection if data is not available.

Once you implement the technology, build learning blocks and prove that it makes sense, advised Poppel. “If it doesn’t make sense … You need to fail fast.

If it isn’t working, quit doing it because it’s probably costing you money,” he said.

Bottom line Ken Franzky, Centrol Crop Consulting agronomy services manager, recalled looking at yield maps in 1985 with the goal to paint the yield map all the same color of 200-plus bushel corn. Franzky realized that he cannot control variability, only manage it.

“I expect to see a range of colors.” said Franzky.

“The goal is to make the poorest areas better and the best areas better and everything in between.”

On a poor-producing field, Poppel looks at how profitable he can be on that field.

“My goal is to make money on that field, not raise bushels. I’m probably OK with 165 bushels on that land as long as I manage my inputs differently,” said Poppel.

As you adopt precision agronomy, Kruise tells producers to define goals and look at variability, land, equipment and past production. “Whether it’s a 100acre farmer or 10,000 acre farmer plus, I think they have the ability to use precision agronomy on their farm to make them money, or save them money and increase yield.” he said.

Many farmers question whether technology has made their life easier or more complicated, but they all know it’s here to stay.

“The days of hitting the easy button for our farming operations are over,” said Poppel. “Don’t be afraid.

Just because we have three-plus-dollar corn and say ‘I gotta sit on the sidelines for a while.’”

The bottom line, said Poppel, is that producers who want to remain competitive can’t let technology pass them by. v

However, that is down from a record high in 2016. The 2017 estimate is still the second highest on record (data only goes back to 2003).”

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — On Jan. 16, about 720 farmers filled the convention center at Prairie’s Edge Casino in Granite Falls for the Ag PhD Winter Workshop hosted by brothers Darren and Brian Hefty of Hefty Seed Company, headquar- Brian Hefty tered in Baltic, S.D. While the free lunch was great, Darren and Brian Hefty’s dual presentation was the real meat and potatoes. They offered big screen visuals and a 66-page take-home handout that was the full meal deal on how to maximize production while controlling input costs for the 2017 crop year.

“When we have a group like today and we can make a difference on their farms this year, that’s what we are all about,” said Brian.

Q: Why do you attract tremendous turnouts at your agronomy workshops?

Brian: We have great attendance at our events. I think it all ties together. We do a lot of stuff on TV and radio. We offer a dozen different mobile apps on a variety of farming topics. And because of the constant introduction of new products for agriculture, farmers have endless questions. Hopefully we give people a good experience when they come to our workshops. Whenever you attend one of our workshops, you go home with a new book about information about crop production. Learning a little bit more about agronomy both in terms of higher yields and better profitability is our goal.

Q: You talked about boosting yields while cutting input costs. Are cutbacks in chemical and seed costs part of the answer?

Brian: Sure, cutting costs is part of this economic challenge; but a better focus is, how do we get the best return for whatever dollar we’re going to spend?

Today with generics now into the mainstream, you certainly can cut costs with similar chemistry of the branded products. It simply means switching products. There are so many generics and name-brand products that are combinations of old stuff. Plus, many companies are now offering rebate programs especially if you are into multiple applications of the same product.

Q: Are rebates suggesting the major players are feeling the heat of competition?

Brian: You’ve got to remember the big companies invest millions right back into research and development. Many aren’t paying dividends or issuing additional stocks. Their margins mostly go right back into more R&D. Their future is new innovations. A new product doesn’t have the shelf life it used to simply because R&D is generating so many new products. A new product means new profits. Often what they do is tie their old chemistry in with the new things and rebate it back to the farmer. This adds another arm into their total product listing.

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

O

n a side street in downtown Little Falls, a weather-worn sign announces simply, “Shoe Service.” Step inside, up two stairs, and you’ll find Marie Rakow carrying on a family tradition which started in the middle of the last century.

“My Dad was Melvin Marotte,” Marie said. “He repaired shoes for JBs in Little Falls. He quit there and came here to start his own shop in 1958.”

When Melvin started his shop, he bought top-quality equipment. The stitcher for sewing on heels was made in 1940 and was purchased used. Marie still uses it along with the heel nailer, McKay stitcher, sanding machine, and the three-in-one machine that her dad purchased.

“Dad always said you should keep a machine oiled. He said oil is cheaper than spare parts.”

Marie, whose shop smells a little like leather and a little like machine oil, took over from Melvin when he retired. She’s a little vague about when that was.

“So, when did you take over the shop?”

“About when he retired.”

“When was that?”

“I started working with my Dad when I was in high school.

I’ve been here for ages.”

Marie remembers back when she was working with her dad and there were so many shoes to repair that they would come into the shop in the evening to catch up. In those days, she and Melvin worked side by side to craft miracles for Little Falls’ damaged soles. Today, Marie can still extend the lifespan of your worn footwear. That is, if it’s made to be repaired!

Most contemporary shoes aren’t.

“Molded soles can’t be repaired,” she said.

The same is true for molded heels. And plastic shoes can’t be stitched.

It’s true the heel nailing machine doesn’t get the workout it used to; but when a customer drops in to request a jacket she left to be repaired, it’s clear that Marie’s Shoe Service has branched out.

“I put in a lot of zippers and I repair snowmobile and boat covers. I also repair purses and recondition leather jackets.”

Marie has repaired baseball mitts, put emblems on letterman’s jackets, and she’ll even polish and buff your shoes so they shine like a full moon. She also gives out free leather care advice to customers.

“You should oil those shoes more often,” she tells a man who has come to pick up a repaired pair of leather boots. “Use mink oil and put it on by hand. You’ll save oil that way.” v
