So far, they’ve gotten the quid right in the eye — just as Trump promised.

Still, after so much awful ag-related trade news from the White House, there is good news in its terrible border tax idea, says New York Times columnist Paul Krugman. Krugman is a Nobel Prize-winning economist and no Trump acolyte (he calls President Trump “Agent Orange”).

First, explains Krugman, any border tax “can’t be country specific” — aimed solely at, say, Mexico — therefore it cannot be imposed and will never pay for any border wall anywhere.

Second, a border tax “might well be considered WTO-illegal” because the World Trade Organization often views it as “a combined export subsidy and import tariff.” Neither is allowed under WTO rules signed by both Mexico and the United States.

Letter: Buffer law — start over To the Editor: I have buffer strips on every linear foot on my private ditch and they have been installed up to 25 years.

Buffer strips are a good thing.

When the buffer bill was introduced in 2015, it called for a 50-foot buffer for every water body, everywhere, and everyone; no exceptions.

If a 50-foot buffer is adequate and feasible and right, then it is to be applied to everyone, everywhere. If a 16.5-foot buffer is adequate and feasible and right, then it is also to be applied to everyone, everywhere. Also, why is it that most property owners (public ditches at 16.5 feet) have twice as long

The current buffer bill by the state of Minnesota is an unlawful act of discrimination. It is also an unlawful act of targeting. It is also an unlawful act of profiling. Repeal the current buffer bill and start over with a bill that is equitable, right, and fair to everyone.

Not only was it dry and dusty, but it reminded him of a time when he lost the woman he loved and almost lost his life. The only good thing about it was the frontier — Mountain Home, Arizona, to be specific — was where that same woman lived now, and Gabrielle was willing to give him another chance.

Patrick Brautigan knew the rules.

He understood that businessman Rupert Douglass didn’t want any laws broken. No fuss, just efficiency when evening a score or taking revenge. It’s what the Boss demanded, just like he demanded that Cash McLendon be hauled back to St. Louis.

Years ago, McLendon married Douglass’ only daughter and when she committed suicide, Douglass blamed McLendon. If Brautigan succeeded in bringing McLendon back alive, and in a timely manner, Douglass might even let him watch McLendon die.

Bayer-Monsanto merger may increase products

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor MANKATO, Minn. — Many farmers are wondering how mergers between big ag companies will affect their bottom line. Monsanto and Bayer executives participated in the Jan. 25 keynote panel at the MN Ag EXPO 2017 to address the impact of mergers on agriculture.

John Smith, vice president for Bayer CropScience, and Scott Partridge, vice president of global strategy for Monsanto, said the merger will be positive for producers in that there will be more products and lower prices for chemical and seed. The BayerMonsanto merger is going through the regulatory process and is expected to close this year.

Here’s the rationale behind the merger. Bayer is a chemical company that develops pesticides while Monsanto is a biological company that

develops genetically modified seed.

Combining the research and development resources of these two major companies can get products to market faster Scott Partridge than they can on their own.

“I think we will save money doing that,” said Partridge.

For example, Partridge explained that it can take Bayer 10 to 12 years to develop a herbicide. Then Monsanto must take that new chemical molecule and create a trait to make the plant tolerant to the herbicide, which could take another six to 10 years and $150 million in research and development.

“That’s why biological and chemical together is a good fit,” Partridge said.

Partridge expects the savings from consolidation, including in R&D, will be passed on to farmers.

One producer expressed concern that Monsanto would no longer be a U.S. owned company as Bayer, a German company, will own Monsanto.

Partridge noted that Monsanto negotiated that St. Louis remain the North American hub and the global R&D headquarters for the company.

“It’s the right thing to do for our farmers and our shareholders,” said Partridge.

Both Smith and Partridge contend that genetically modified seed is necessary to feed the world based on the statistics that world population is expected to grow from 7.5 billion in 2017 to 10 billion by 2050. Partridge called it a “daunting challenge.

“There are niche markets that exist, non-GMO, organic, locally grown, but that’s not going to feed the world,” said Smith. “To feed the hungry children that go to bed every night in foreign countries without a meal, there’s only one way to do it and that’s to increase

production.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average U.S. corn yield was 175 bushels per acre in 2016. Smith said the goal of Bayer Brian Buhr and Monsanto is to develop the tools to increase the yield in 30 years to 250 bu./acre. Farmers need to get maximum production off each acre.

Brian Buhr, dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota, explained that Minnesota has 51 million arable acres and we are currently farming 24 million acres.

Without the technology of livestock and plant genetics, fertilizers, feed and pesticides, Minnesotans would have to farm all 51 million acres and another 6 million acres in Canada to meet the same production level, he said.

“How do we feed those people and sustain our environment?” asked Buhr.

“That is our fundamental challenge.”

Producers and panel members agreed on the importance of telling this story to consumers. Smith noted that farmers and companies need to come together to tell the story, not only with facts, but also with emotions.

corn at 14 million metric tons. Due to Trump’s vow to build a wall on the border and his expectation that Mexico pay for the wall, Newsom asked if Mexico might look for a different trade partner.

In addition, Trump has suggested a 20 percent tax on Mexican imports.

“I do know they are looking south. I do know Brazil is pretty excited about the prospect of possibly shipping more corn to Mexico,” said Newsom. “It’s a threat.”

While demand and exports for corn in 2016 were excellent, it may not last and the world may begin pulling bushels of corn from other places, said Newsom.

Corn has been moving sideways and demand seems to be stabilizing. Newsom said it will take an extended drought to get the market’s attention.

A hot, dry summer could spike corn to $4.30 for a short time especially if we plant 92 million acres, he said.

“We have to find a way to continue to be the strongest, largest exporter in the world,” said Newsom. v

Trump has pulled out of the TransPacific Partnership, which he promised to do throughout his campaign.

Trump’s reasoning is that the TPP is harmful to American workers and manufacturers. However, withdrawing from TPP may have negative effects for agriculture exports because it opens the door to Brazil and China, said Newsom.

“Brazil is pretty excited about the fact that the United States is not going to be a player in TPP,” said Newsom.

In addition, one of Trump’s campaign promises was a tariff on Chinese imports. In a retaliatory move, China has talked about banning or putting

Iowa water quality report released DES MOINES — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Quality Initiative 2017 Legislative Report during his Bill Northey recently highlighted the Iowa Water presentation to the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee.

The 8-page report provides an update on the $3.8 million made available for statewide cost share for water quality practices and on the 45 demonstration projects that are operating across the state to help implement and demonstrate water quality practices.

Insurance premiums for 2017 should be similar to 2016 THIESSE, from pg. 11 crop damage that affect individual farm units, so additional insurance, such as hail insurance, may be required to insure against these type of losses.

The 2016 crop year in south central Minnesota was a good example of the importance of optional units, when isolated heavy rainfall events and hail storms caused significant crop losses on some farms but not on other farms. Some producers had significant 2016 crop losses on some farm units and not on other farms, especially on corn, but had enterprise units for 2016 crop insurance coverage, and collected little or no crop insurance indemnity payments.

However, in many cases where producers that had significant crop losses in 2016 and had optional units for

insurance coverage, they were able to realize fairly significant crop insurance indemnity payments for 2016 crop losses.

Many times, producers automatically opt for enterprise units every year, due to the lower premium cost per acre for similar coverage. It is important to analyze the yield risk on each individual farm unit, when determining if paying the extra premium for insurance coverage with optional units makes sense. If a producer has uniform soil types and drainage, in a close geographical area, and is primarily concerned with a price decline, a RP policy with enterprise units is probably a good option. However, if a producer has farm units that are more spread out geographically, with more variation in soil types and drainage, and has greater concerns with yield variability, they

may want to give consideration to a RP policy with optional units.

Key items to consider: Crop Insurance premiums for 2017 should be similar to 2016. 2017 Crop Insurance premiums for most coverage levels of corn in the Midwest should be similar to comparable 2016 premium levels; however, premiums may be slightly higher for comparable levels of soybean insurance coverage, due to higher insurance guarantees for 2017 at similar coverage levels.

There are a wide variety of crop insurance policies and coverage levels available. Make sure you are comparing “apples to apples” when comparing crop insurance premium costs for various options or types of crop insurance policies, as well as recognizing the limitations and the differences of

Use caution in moving forward with area risk protection (ARP) crop insurance plans. Some insurance companies and analysts have been promoting the ARP crop insurance option for 2017, due to the ability to purchase up to the 90 percent coverage level, using the same price structure as RP policies. However, be aware that ARP policies use county-level yields for APH yield guarantees and final harvest yields, whereas RP policies utilize the farm APH yields to calculate the initial insurance guarantee. There would also be no yield protection against isolated yield losses on individual farm units with APH policies. CORN — Corn took its lead from soybeans to begin the week on a sour note. Improving weather in South America and uncertainty over President Trump’s view of trade agreements led to losses. The executive order restricting immigration from seven countries added to traders’ woes since political disruptions are usually not good for commodity prices. However, when the calendar flipped to February, fresh money appeared and heavy buying ensued into the close on Feb. 1 to send corn PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. soaring to reverse nearly two St. Paul weeks of losses. This was shortlived as prices eased lower into the weekend.

For the week, March corn managed to hang onto a 2.75 cent gain at $3.65.25, July was 3.25 cents higher at $3.79.75 and December was up 3.5 cents at $3.92.75 per bushel. For the month of January, March corn was 7.75 cents higher for a gain of 2.2 percent of value.

In the commitment of traders report as of Jan. 24, managed money had flipped the net short position to a small net long position. This was the first time they were net long in corn since July. Trade estimates as we headed home for the weekend pegged funds net long approximately 13,000 contracts.

Weekly export inspections were better than expected early in the week at 1.06 million metric tons.

The month of February has brought about a slight continuation of the current rally in livestock prices.

Overall, the hog market has been the leader in price rises in the livestock complex so far this month. Thus far the rallies which have taken place appear to be no more than recovery rallies in a bear market. Now, is there follow-through to break the long term downtrend in livestock prices?

The cattle market is now struggling with supply/demand which will ultimately determine the future direction of prices in the months ahead.

The U.S. JOE TEALE Department of Agriculture Broker released two reports in the later Great Plains Commodity days of January which both indiAfton, Minn. cated that cattle numbers are on the increase. The first report released was the Monthly Cattle on Feed report which surprised the trade with more than anticipated placements during the previous month. Then the USDA released the Cattle Inventory report that indicated cattle numbers were greater than anticipated. The futures market immediately sold off going to a discount and the cash market soon followed.

The challenge right now for the market is, immediate market-ready cattle are tight, packers are still in positive margins and are somewhat aggressive in trying to accumulate live inventory. On the other side of the supply/demand equation, beef movement is slow which has been documented by the continually increasing quantities in cold storage. Therefore, in the short run, cattle prices may hold or even rally;

With agriculture’s cyclical nature, we’ve seen our young and beginning farmers struggle to gain equity in an existing operation. Additionally, with prices like we’ve had over the past few years, farm families are avoiding their succession plans. South American weather stifles soybean price

Outlook: Technicals and fund buying ran the show for the week, shoving any bearish inputs into the background. We have had decent corn demand, but we also have plenty of corn around the country. The $3.71 level in March corn is resistance with $3.55 as decent support. In the December contract, $3.96.75 is resistance with support in the mid-$3.80s. I would expect more sideways trading, at least until the Feb. 9 crop report.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans kicked off the week with big losses as weather threats in South America diminished and profit taking sent prices to lows not seen since mid-January. China was on holiday until late in the week as they celebrated the Lunar New Year.

Funds were big sellers on Jan. 30, continuing to liquidate their largest net long (as of Jan. 24) since July. Prices saw a rebound mid-week which I would attribute to “fresh month, fresh money”

slowed in the past few weeks. If this uptrend is to continue, the demand for pork products will have to remain strong if not improved. It would appear the hog market is approaching a crossroads which will determine the direction prices will take into the next several months.

From a technical standpoint, the futures market is currently overbought, so a corrective action could take place. As to whether this signifies the end of the rally or just a pause in the rally will be determined by the demand for pork and packer margins. Because of the current conditions affecting the market at this time, producers should monitor the market conditions and protect inventories as needed. v

Any new regulations may contain the requirement that 10 percent of the purchase price go toward land reform to benefit landless farmers. As expected, the Federal Reserve did not raise interest rates at the conclusion of their two-day meeting.

Outlook: Better weather forecasts in South America, fund profit taking and China off the markets for a holiday were all negative factors in this week’s decline. We likely need to keep a small risk premium in the market for possible late weather threats to the South American crop, but that window gets smaller each week. According to news reports, Informa Economics raised its Brazilian bean estimate to 106.5 mmt.

The USDA was at 104 mmt in January.

Informa left its Argentine bean estimate unchanged at 55 mmt. January’s USDA Argentine projection was 57 mmt. Safras and Mercado refreshed their Brazilian bean number to a whopping 107.1 mmt!

Most traders will be looking for a larger Brazilian figure next week and a slightly smaller Argentine forecast.

For the month of January, March soybeans were up 20.5 cents or 2 percent of value. For the week, March beans fell 22.25 cents to $10.27, July was off 19.75 at $10.45.75 and November dropped 15.5 cents to $10.09.75 per bushel. March soyoil was down 0.41 cents to 33.86 cents and March soymeal slid $11.40 lower to $331.60 per ton.

Index fund rolls to the May from the March begin Feb. 7 and funds are long the March. This could put some pressure back into the market. First support in the March soybeans is $10.17, then down at the psychological $10.00 level. Resistance lies at $10.46 to $10.49.25 per bushel. For the November soybean contract, resistance is at $10.25.5 and support at $9.95.5 per bushel. What the USDA pegs South American production at next week will be key to direction.

Nystrom’s Notes: Contract changes for the week ending Feb. 3: March Minneapolis wheat down 1.75 cents, Chicago up 9.75 cents and Kansas City 6.25 cents higher. Crude oil was just 66 cents higher at $53.83, ULSD was 3 cents higher, RBOB managed a meager 0.25 cent gain and natural gas plunged 29.5 cents lower. The U.S. dollar index as of mid-day Feb. 3 was down 679 points for the week at 99.881. v

but in the longer term, unless beef begins to move better, the supply will weigh on futures prices. Producers should remain alert to market conditions and protect inventories if necessary.

The hog market continues to be on an excellent rally from the lows made last October (low $40s basis lean) to now crossing the $70 level basis lean. The good demand for pork started this rally; and tighter-than-expected numbers added to carry the market to a $30 rally basis lean.

As pork cutouts have moved higher, the movement of pork has slightly

hitting the market.

Prices were able to nearly erase early week losses. Negative chart action on Feb. 2, when fund action was absent, set the market up for further losses into the weekend.

Weekly export inspections were over 1 mmt for the 18th week in a row, coming in at 1.6 mmt or 59.9 million bushels. The USDA announced a bean sale of 170,700 metric tons for old crop and 66,000 metric tons for new crop to unknown mid-week.

Weekly export sales were neutral at 22.9 million bushels. We need 8 million bushels of sales per week to achieve the USDA’s 2.05 billion bushel projection. No one is really looking for the export category to be increased on the supply/demand sheets as record South American supplies are expected to slash our sales down the road. Total export commitments are 1.85 billion bushels and represent 90 percent of the USDA export target. The December National Agricultural Statistics Service Soy Crush report released on Feb. 1 was 169.2 million bushels, slightly lower than the 170.6 million bushel pre-report estimate and beneath the range of estimates. Soyoil stocks were 1.873 billion pounds, much higher than the 1.790 billion pound forecast.

Brazil’s bean harvest was 5 percent complete as of Jan. 30 compared to 3 percent on average. Mato Grosso, their biggest soybean producing state with 30 percent of production, was 31 percent harvested vs. 14 percent last year. In general, I would venture that Argentina’s crops have stabilized and Brazil’s still have the potential to get bigger. Brazil’s boat line-up for beans is nearly double what it was last year, at the expense of corn loadings. Brazil’s bean loadings in January were a 912,000 metric tons vs. just 394,000 metric tons last year. The vessel line-up for the next month and a half is also about double what it was last year. The corn line-up is down 67 percent from last year from 4.4 mmt to 1.45 mmt.

Farmers in Parana, Brazil, (the second leading soybean producing state) are estimated to have only sold 20 percent of their soybean crop so far, compared to 45 percent sold on average. Parana’s harvest was pegged at just 2 percent complete as of Jan. 30, a week behind their average. Argentina’s growers are estimated to have 13 percent sold of their soybeans vs. 8 percent last year.

However, we are running behind what is needed on a weekly basis to achieve the U.S. Department of Agriculture export forecast and the gap between what is needed and the actual inspections is widening. Weekly export sales were 45 million bushels and were above expectations. We need 23 million bushels of sales per week to hit the USDA’s 2.225 billion bushels target.

Total commitments stand at 1.6 billion bushels, which is 71 percent of the USDA’s export projection. Our sales are expected to taper off as South American supplies come to market.

Weekly ethanol production set another new overall record in the week that ended Jan. 27 at 1.06 million barrels per day or 312 million gallons per week! This is more than a 10 percent increase over last year for the same week. The increase in production, despite declining margins, has traders looking for a 50 to 100 million bushel increase in this year’s ethanol usage line on the next supply/demands report.

Ethanol stocks increased 6 million gallons to 919 million gallons. Over the last four weeks, ethanol production is up 1.7 percent while stocks are up 17 percent. Gasoline demand in the last four weeks is down 5.7 percent from last year. The ethanol crush margin improved 4 cents per gallon week on week to a positive 2 cents per gallon. In their December Grains Crushing report, the USDA said corn used for ethanol was 476.9 million bushels, up 25.2 million bushels from November.

This supported traders’ ideas of an

increase in the ethanol usage line on the next supply/demand report.

Brazil’s first corn crop was 1 percent harvested as of Jan. 30, which was a week behind the average, according to the state’s agriculture department DERAL. Brazil’s safrinha corn crop was 6 percent planted, also a week behind average. Argentina’s corn was 96 percent planted vs. 95 percent on average. According to Reuters, Informa Economics updated its Brazilian corn crop estimate to 89 mmt and Argentina to 35.2 mmt. In January, the USDA was using 86.5 mmt for Brazil and 36.5 mmt for Argentina.

Renville County farmer finishes his 50th and final harvest

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer OLIVIA, Minn. — For Olivia farmer and Northarvest Bean Growers Association Director Jim Zenk, the 2016 harvest was his 50th and last. His Jim Zenk corn, soybean and hog operation has included edible beans for the past 47 years.

Zenk started farming in 1966 after coming home from Air Force basic training. He served over six years in the Minnesota Air Guard. “Word got around that I bought a nearly-new John Deere 4020 and two neighbors came over wanting me to rent their farms,” said Zenk.

Some rocky, poorly drained and overpriced extra acres were available, he said.

Zenk recalls some tough times the first few years; but says farming has always been exciting, even though financially painful at times.

Always curious, Zenk and his dad starting raising pinto beans in 1970

after a processing plant was built in nearby Bird Island. A few years later, a new navy bean processing plant was built in Olivia, only six miles from his farm. So the family shifted to navy beans, which Zenk says are easier to grow. He’s been growing navies ever since.

“In the early days of edibles, growers were in and out. Prices weren’t predictable. And harvesting was an issue because we didn’t have strong, standup genetics. But now the guys that grow navy beans grow them every year as part of their rotation,” he said.

He estimates about 20 percent of area farmers are growing navy beans because navies have been more lucrative than corn and soybeans over the last few years.

“It’s a black ink crop and that’s the reason. Break-evens are doable on navies. However, because it’s an edible product, you have to be more careful in harvest and handling. But with that comes the reward of better profits,” he said.

Olivia is $27 per hundredweight. Jim Zenk’s son, Robb Zenk, is manager of the Olivia facility and said contracts would be available for the 2017 crop.

“But we don’t yet have contract prices. Typically growers will contract about one ton per acre. However, 2,400 to 2,700 pounds per acre are common these days. We’ll have plenty of seed,” said Robb.

Edible bean seed is produced mostly in Idaho.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same,” Robb said. “The concern with our growers today is the price isn’t good enough and there are always disease potentials. Those two are pretty much the same concerns we had 46 years ago.”

Market Zenk is wrapping up his 12th year as a board member of the Minnesota Dry Bean Research and Promotion Council.

“Edibles have a world market,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot about marketing and been to places and met growers from all over the continent.”

Travels included a food show in Germany a few years ago where he met food buyers and sellers from all over the world. “When they found out I was a U.S. farmer who grows these beans they wanted to buy directly from me. They didn’t understand these beans aren’t saleable directly from the farm,” he said.

About six years ago, Zenk’s trade mission travels took him to Colombia where people eat lots of beans similar to a pinto. “We came away empty handed, but the next team convinced the Colombian food trade people to try a few of our American edibles. And now Colombia is a major importer of U.S. pinto beans,” he said Great Britain continues to be the top export market for U.S. navy beans.

Mexico is number-one for pinto beans.

However, Bush Beans in Wisconsin is the primary purchaser of Midwest edible beans.

Zenk sees a bright future for edible beans as people look for low-cost protein sources. “Beans are high-quality protein and cheaper than meat. We haven’t scratched the surface on future demand for dry edible beans,” he said.

Progress Zenk has seen many changes in dry bean production compared with the 1970s.

“Back then we had a puller — a machine that literally pulled the plants out of the soil surface into a windrow,” he said. “It was night work to minimize cracking of the pods. It was messy work. We’d always end up with some dirty beans. Running those beans through your combine was a mess and hard on your combine too.

But when newer varieties let us directcut and better flex heads became available, we could virtually shave the ground.”

Two more new products made the harvest even better.

“We started using a new desiccant that killed the beans just a few days ahead of harvest,” Zenk explained.

“This greatly minimized moisture issues. Plus, field rollers came on big time. Stomping root balls into the soil greatly cleaned up the harvest.”

Zenk chuckles, “Considering all the problems we had with this new crop in those first years, you wonder why we kept on. But soybeans were about $3 and we’d expect only about 30-bushel yields. Pintos were 10 cents in those days and we could expect 2,200 pound yields!”

Zenk said he thinks Northarvest’s commitment to research and promotion is part of the reason for the evolution of production practices and improved pest and disease products.

The edible bean checkoff is 10 cents/ cwt. Checkoff money is used for research projects at North Dakota State University, South Dakota State University, and other locations.

“Deciding what particular research project we’re putting our grower’s checkoff dollars into is always interesting,” Zenk said. “Without new genetics, new products and practices over the years, I really don’t think we’d be much of an industry today.”

Retirement Robb Zenk has taken over the farming chores for his dad.

Even though Jim, and wife Dianne Zenk, have moved into Olivia, Zenk said he’ll probably be at the farm more often than needed.

“I’m not much of a hunter or fisherman. I don’t golf, but suppose I could learn. But I’m pretty certain my son will need me once in a while … even if it’s just a trip into town for something.” v

Federal order and California benchmark milk prices started 2017 in the wrong direction. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the January FO Class III price at $16.77 per hundredweight. This is down 63 cents from December, but $3.05 above January 2016 and 78 cents above California’s comparable 4b price. It equates to $1.44 per gallon, down from $1.50 in December and compares

to $1.18 a year ago.

Daily Dairy Report’s Sarina Sharp wrote about it in the Jan. 27 Milk Producers Council newsletter.

“NAFTA eliminated tariffs on dairy products moving between the U.S. and Mexico but renegotiating the massive trade pact will not improve the U.S. dairy industry’s trade prospects,” she warned, “And could do considerable damage.”

Mexico is one of the U.S. biggest customers for powder and FC Stone’s Brendan Curran wrote in his Feb. 2 Early Morning Update that “There’s still a lot of powder out there both domestically and in EU intervention storage, and with the recent, inflammatory rhetoric between Washington and the Mexican government it only adds uncertainty — something markets don’t like.”

In other trade news, a joint press release from the National Milk Producers Federation, U.S. Dairy Expo Council, and the International Dairy Foods Association reported that “The U.S. dairy industry this week continued to push back against Canada’s protectionist policies that are effectively blocking American dairy imports into the country in violation of international agreements.

“A group of 17 dairy companies representing dairy farmers and processors from coast to coast asked governors in 25 states to urge Canadian policymakers to uphold existing trade commitments with the United States and halt the imminent implementation of a national strategy that would unfairly sub-

sidize Canadian dairy products in its domestic and global markets. “(U.S.-Canada) trade cannot be a one-way street with Canada expecting to enjoy the benefits of exporting its products of interest to our market while denying a sector accounting for hundreds of thousands of jobs in rural America reliable access to the Canadian market,” the group said in its letter to the governors. “(An existing provincial) program has already cost U.S. companies tens of millions of dollars in exports, thereby harming the dairy farmers, dairy plant employees and rural communities that depend on the benefits those foreign sales bring.”

“Beginning Feb. 1, Canada is poised to expand the product scope of that provincial program,” the press release states, “while instituting it nationally. It also intends to disrupt skim milk powder markets around the world by using the new program to dump excess milk powder on global markets.”

“The 17 dairy companies sent the letter to governors in states with significant numbers of dairy farms and dairy processing companies because of the damage Canada’s policies have had already or are poised to have on these farms and companies, as well as their employees and many communities.

The letter urged state officials to ‘consider all tools at their disposal to ensure Canada understands the seriousness of this issue.’”

The NMPF this week also endorsed new legislation introduced in the House of Representatives that would prompt the enforcement of dairy labeling terms which are used to market imitation products containing no real dairy ingredients.

The bill would “compel the Food and Drug Administration to take action against misbranded, plant-based beverages that are inappropriately using dairy terms, especially ‘milk.’”

The measure requires the FDA to issue guidance for nationwide enforcement of these definitions within 90 days and would require the FDA to report to Congress two years after the bill’s enactment to hold the agency to its obligations.” It mirrors the Dairy Pride Act introduced two weeks ago in the Senate.

“Real milk has been recognized for decades for its important nutritional benefits,” said NMPF President and CEO Jim Mulhern. “These imposter products almost always use dairy imagery, similar packaging and names but they never match the nutritional benefits found in milk. This House legislation sends a clear message that plant-based foods should not be able to create and use nomenclature that is in conflict with existing federal standards of identity requiring the presence of real milk.”

Farmers learn how to adopt precision agronomy

Return on investment Producers are seeing a return on investment. On Lahr’s land, grid sampling meant fertilizing in areas that are yielding best and pulling back on areas that were not yielding well. Lahr learned that in some areas, fertility was not the issue, but rather the issue was drainage or elevation.

“I can’t say we saved a lot of money on fertilizer, but we sure spent it in better places,” said Lahr. “We started spending our money where it could bring the most return. That was the biggest advantage.”

Poppel noted that the best return on investment has been in nitrogen management. To quantify variable rate planting, Poppel has seen an increase of 12 bushels per acre in corn in the past two years. Although he is not saving money on seed, he expects other

producers are.

Kruise advises looking closely at yield maps. “Where is my most profitable acres of that field versus where is the least profitable?” he asked. Then you can run the right prescription for your seed and fertilizer. Be sure to look at your return on investment on a zone basis, not across your whole operation.

When implementing precision agronomy, producers recommended working closely with an agronomist. Many cooperatives have precision agronomy services.

“I don’t remember farming without these guys,” said Lahr of his precision agronomists from Centrol Crop Consulting.

Above all, Poppel said you need to understand what your biggest limiting factor is so you can address it with trusted advisors. For instance, he is considering buying a multi-hybrid planter that can plant different seed hybrids based on field conditions. His next step is to sit down with his agronomist, seed supplier and banker.

In addition, knowing your cost of production is a must. Before investing in a technology, your agronomist can look at data to see how it can work in your operation or make a projection if data is not available.

“The days of hitting the easy button for our farming operations are over,” said Poppel. “Don’t be afraid. Just because we have three-plus-dollar corn and say ‘I gotta sit on the sidelines for a while.’”

The bottom line, said Poppel, is that producers who want to remain competitive can’t let technology pass them by. v

Tackle cover crop challenge Farmers are gaining confidence in using cover crops more each year. Whether used for soil erosion, capturing nutrients, breaking disease cycles, improving soil health, adding organic matter, or any one of the many other benefits — cover crops can be beneficial.

However, challenges exist. Upcoming workshops in St. Charles, Minn. on Feb. 28 and in Owatonna, Minn. on March 2 will address some of these challenges, including; residual herbicide effects, cover crop establishment and the use of interseeding, and managing manure application timing. University of Minnesota Extension will be presenting at these workshops.

Destree continues to be very positive about organic crop production, primarily because it is such a consumer-driven industry. He recalled, “Back in the startup days of the 1980s, industry people were telling us 15 percent growth per year is what we should expect. We’re still hearing 15 percent growth projections. Right now we’re over a $48 billion industry.”

Organic agriculture may be good for the soil. An analysis of 74 studies of the soils in fields under organic or conventional farming practices found that over time, the carbon content in the organic fields significantly increased.

This conclusion means organic agriculture results in a richer, more productive soil with plenty of humus.

— In 2017, the CHS Foundation will award nearly 300 scholarships to students studying agriculture or STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) fields of study with an interest in agriculture or energy industry careers. One hundred high school students will be awarded $1,000 scholarships as they enter their freshman year of college.

Scholarship applications must be submitted by March 31, 2017. An independent external review committee will select recipients based on essays, transcripts and reference letters. For

Having a market agreement is vital before planting your first organic seeds.

Most organic crops are contracted and growers generally have marketing agreements for each crop. At the Minnesota Organic Conference, growers could visit various exhibitors to get 2017 contract prices on soybeans, corn, milk and more. For 2017, $7.50 per bushel was the talk for corn; soybeans $20 a bushel. Soybeans with clear hilums could be a couple of dollars per bushel more. And for the edible beans, anywhere from 75 cents to 80 cents for

Destree said at this time, there is nothing available in terms of chemical control at least not with lasting results.

He did some work with a high-pH product in the East Grand Forks area this past season.

“Our goal was to get rid of some thistles, which we did, but eventually they grew back. We used an alkali product. Right now, this is a non-listed product. I used it as a blend with other products. When you have weed problems, it’s generally a manganese deficiency in about 40 percent of the weeds.

It’s also a boron deficiency; so I blend these various elements together and then customize the mix,” he explained.

Destree noted the alkali soils and alkali waters of northern Minnesota contrasted with the higher pH soils of southern Minnesota, generally about 7.5 and 6.8 of the waters.

“So in southern Minnesota, I’m testing with an acid-based product for organic weed control,” said Destree. “This mixture kills giant ragweed. But the problem is, giant ragweed springs up again about two weeks later. We’ve got branded chemicals that no longer kill giant ragweed; but this organic chemical in the form of an acid literally fries the ragweed, burning it right to the ground.”

This suggests repeat applications, said Destree, but because giant ragweed is generally a 1 or 2-acre problem, in a larger field, additional spot treatments should not be an issue.

Today he is a consultant in organic crop production and The Land caught up with him at the Minnesota Organic Conference, held Jan. 12-13 in St. Cloud.

“I had to learn on my own,” he said.

“We simply didn’t have the educational environment on the do’s and don’t’s like we have today. The need for consulting was very evident. So that was my next endeavor and here we are.”

Destree currently works for the Madison, Wis., firm, Organic Marketing Inc. “I’ve always got people wanting help on how to transition into organic and how to do organic once certified,” he said.

As a consultant, Destree is most often asked, “How do we get rid of weeds?” As you might expect, there is no one answer.

“I’ve got a combination of items and usually talk about the top ten things,” Destree explained. “It starts with soil nutrition and the management of nutrients in the soil. Then I talk mechanical weed control systems including cultivation, flaming, several minimum tillage tools such as tine weeders, drags, etc., depending upon what you have for soil types. Today, many growers now have GPS systems which permits working within one-and-a-half inches of the rows. That absolutely helps.”

MCIA focuses on certified, improved seed quality

— Born into a humble family in central Pakistan, Fawad Shah is now an integral part of the U.S. seed industry. In 2015, Shah Fawad Shah became president and CEO of the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association. He shared a few moments of his time with The Land at the Minnesota Organic Conference, held Jan. 12-13, in St. Cloud.

Q: Tell us a bit of the current status of agriculture in Pakistan.

Shah: Pakistan’s economy is based on agriculture. Pakistan is one of the world’s largest producers and suppliers of cotton, sugar cane, rice, wheat, chickpea, mango, date palm, citrus, apricot and milk. There is also strong vegetable production.

Q: Is your homeland also into agricultural exports?

Shah: Yes. However, there are several limiting factors right now. Small land holdings, lesser yields due to seed quality issues and limited irrigation water are restraining outputs. Lack of mechanization, inadequate rural infrastructure and poor policy alignment are other challenges for Pakistan farmers.

Q: When did you become president of the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association?

Shah: I started my role with MCIA on June 1, 2015. As many of your farmers know, MCIA is the exclusive marketing agent of new and improved crop varieties developed by the University of Minnesota. MCIA collaborates with

And we work with the Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture on several programs. In the MnDOT program for example, we are the certifying body for sod mixtures and administer MnDOT seed vendors program that markets seed to the Minnesota Department of Transportation for new and revitalized highway projects.

Q: What is your specific objective with MCIA? Shah: To expand what we already have in place. MCIA has been on the scene since 1903, so certified and improved seed quality has always been a priority. We want to be the thirdparty service organization for Minnesota, perhaps even outside Minnesota. MCIA strives to cater programs that help its customers gain market share and profits.

Q: What do you see as your accomplishments to date?

Shah: We re-opened the seed testing laboratory that had been shut down for about eight years. This facility is at our St. Paul headquarters.

Plus, about a year ago, we started a Non-GMO Grain Traceability program which helps fulfill customer requirements in both foreign and domestic markets. We verify the non-GMO grain status from production to the final seeds. Working with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, we issue certificates of compliance after process verified requirements are met. MDA then issues certificates of compliance, a government-issued document, after verifying product met program requirements, so the foreign buyer can have both MCIA and MDA verification.

Q: Do you contemplate an easing of regulatory issues on non-GMO seeds into the marketplace?

Shah: With the new administration, I think we may see some lessening of federal regulations. But from my viewpoint, I don’t believe these regulations are hindering marketing. I believe customer perceptions are more the issue, particularly in the case of GMO. I think from the get-go, the education and outreach about non-GMO concept was not well planned and executed. In addition, certain countries play protectionism that have hindered GMO acceptance.

Q: What is the current status of the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association?

Shah: We have over 500 members.

Our membership fee is small so that is not a major revenue source. But because MCIA is a service organization to the entire seed industry, we make the bulk of our funding from service charges for the many field inspections and various certification services including seed and organic, plus third party audit services. n Shah hesitated to project what percent of all Minnesota crops are pro-

duced with certified seed origins because there are also several sources of non-certified seed production within the state. But in 2015, a record number 294,000 acres of certified seed acres were inspected and verified through the MCIA program. This covers corn, soybeans, wheat and other small grains, plus the turf species such as rye grass.

“In 2016, we expected our acres would be the norm which has been about 225,000 acres,” Shah said, “but we did 284,000 acres. So again, a very strong year.” Because yields were very strong for virtually all certified seed producers last year, Shah thinks acres could be down for 2017.

He did suggest however, that industrial hemp might be the newest entry into the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association portfolio. “Currently, MDA is administering an industrial hemp pilot project,” Shah said. “At a Jan. 5 meeting, our MCIA Standards Committee recommended seed certification standards to the board. Because it is a regulated crop, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is running a pilot project and their decisions will determine if 2017 will be the first season of a limited amount of industrial hemp for the MCIA certification program.”

Shah earned a master’s degree in plant breeding from the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad, Pakistan.

He received his doctorate in agronomy from the seed technology program of Mississippi State University.

His ongoing professional ambition is the development of partnerships to promote agriculture in his homeland and other regions. Developing more robust and appropriate seed systems within these environments is his solution.

“This can be accomplished through public-private partnerships, with both local and foreign experts on the ground to help educate and implement a sound seed system,” said Shah.

Keep cold cattle comfy tion, a good coat, and dry conditions, cattle can stay comfortable to fairly low temperatures.

The elements, especially wind and rain or snow, are what make cattle uncomfortable. Providing them with shelter from the elements is one way to help combat cold stress. A wind break is one simple solution. Providing a roof overhead is ideal.

The other major management tip for cold stress is focusing on nutrition.

Cold stress increases maintenance energy requirements but does not impact protein, mineral or vitamin requirements. The general rule of thumb is to increase the energy density of the ration by 1 percent for each degree below the lower critical temperature. One of the ways that cattle respond to cold stress is by increasing voluntary feed intake. To support this, make sure water is available, make sure enough feed is available, and make any diet changes incrementally.

“Farmers don’t get excited, however, because at this stage there isn’t much market. Catching on now is a fall seeding of rye, then go with corn or soybeans. I think oats can do as well as organic wheat yields. Both crops need more price bonus however.”

For 2017 crops, Klecker doesn’t see price recovery. Staying competitive in the world market is a factor, plus U.S. stocks are still huge.

“We need to move these stored corn and soybeans into the market and take the money to the bank,” he said. “You can’t just hang on to the crop going into this new season.”

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — You hear quite often, “cattle do better in colder temperatures.” But have you ever wondered what that actually means?

Research has shown time and again that the range at which a cow feels most comfortable is broad. Anywhere between 25 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit is comfortable. At 25 F, we are usually wearing winter coats along with gloves and hats. A thick winter hair coat, rumen, and average body temperature around 101 F makes cattle more comfortable in cooler weather.

When is it “too cold” for cattle? The answer should be 25 F. However, that’s not the full story. Cattle can remain comfortable at lower temperatures with thicker hair coats. For example, in wet conditions with a summer coat, the lower critical temperature is 59 F. So this is when the cattle would start to feel cold stress. With a dry fall coat, the lower critical temperature is 45 F. With a dry winter coat, cold stress starts at around 32 F. Lastly, with a dry, heavy winter coat, cattle’s lower critical temperature is 18 F. With good body condi-

“Going organic is more work,” Klecker said. “It means getting the cultivator out again. The non-organic guys simply rely on chemicals. Many farmers still have their cultivator sitting in the shed, or in their outdoor shelter. I talked to a fairly large customer just this week and he said they have 10 cultivators sitting in their sheds … but they have different cultivators for different applications.”

SunOpta’s Hope elevator handles only corn and soybeans. Sunflowers are a northwest Minnesota and Dakotas crop. There are two other SunOpta Minnesota facilities in Moorhead and Breckenridge.

“But we’re constantly looking for oats, wheat or another small grain that will fit into that rotation,” said Klecker.

Klecker acknowledges that consumers greatly impact food trends.

“I firmly believe the consumer is leading the charge for certified organic and non-GMO foods. That shows up in our own business,” he said. “We are now doing business with several major food manufacturers, and we’re constantly searching for more. At this stage, we specialize only in non-GMO corn and beans; but if we come across demand for organic oats or wheat we’ll be all over it.”

Markets Reflecting on tight margins and red ink in commodities, Klecker noted certified organic farmers are happy these days. “Because they did have black ink on their balance sheets,” Klecker said.

“The non-organic farmers saw little black ink except some on soybeans.”

He said the mid-January cash price on soybeans was slightly over $9 at local elevators; but the organics were $17.

Agricultural trade with Cuba may open up small market

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Fernando Funes-Monzote, 26 years old, was the keynote speaker at the Minnesota Organic Conference, Jan. 12-13, in St. Cloud. Funes-Monzote gave his audience a vivid picture of Cuban agriculture today, and more importantly, tomorrow. He told about transforming an abandoned 20-acre farm outside Havana into a productive and sustainable system. With few resources and using organic methods, Funes-Monzote and his 16 people are developing local markets and using agritourism to reinvent Cuban agriculture.

A major sponsor in bringing Fernando to the conference was the Minnesota Department of Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson. The Land spoke with Frederickson about Funes-Monzote’s presentation and his inside look at what’s happening to a neighbor.

Q: I understand you are the only state department of agriculture that sponsors an organic farming conference. Why is that?

Frederickson: Because some of my own staff people, who early on in this organic farming excitement, thought we should sponsor an event for both organic farmers and those wannabes to sit down and exchange ideas and helpfulness. Plus, our state Legislature has always been kind to let us do these exploratory events. That’s exactly how we were able to sponsor Fernando to come to our event. He has a Ph.D. Education is free in Cuba. But he learned about sustainable ag and organic farming and wanted to put it to work. They’ve been at it for five years and it’s working so very well. After viewing Fernando and his team in Cuba, it seemed there might be things we could learn by bringing him to Minnesota

and our organic farming conference.

He shared that two-year (1990-91) struggle when the Soviet Union just shut down their cooperation with Cuba. People literally were starving. Fernando is training his people to organize and work with each other so they can feed their own people. That makes a lot of sense. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the establishment of the extension service across rural America which became the resource service for a better agriculture.

Q: Are we sensing a new relationship between America and Cuba, particularly as it relates to agriculture?

Frederickson: Yes, I think so; but we need to remember that Cuba’s 11 million people are twice the population of Minnesota. So, at best, we could probably only expect a small market for Minnesota ag products.

You will see things develop rather quickly if that embargo were to be lifted. But maybe it needs to develop slowly. I have only been to Cuba once, but I don’t know if the economy of Cuba can handle an immediate infusion of goods and services from America.

It’s been 55 years since the revolution in Cuba. You and I remember it well … 1959 was when it happened. So listening to Fernando today, we need to realize the Cuban people want to feed themselves first and foremost. But they also want higher proteins in their feeds and grains. At this date, they

can’t produce the higher protein grains that we do.

So I think we will soon recapture some of that market we lost 55 years ago when Fidel Castro took over their country.

Q: Do you think President Trump might act fairly quickly on this Cuban embargo?

Frederickson: Your guess is as good as mine.

First, I’d like to see him name our next Secretary of Agriculture (Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue was announced for confirmation on Jan. 19). Then I think we should move forward with new trade and assistance programs for Cuban agriculture. We absolutely need to have that trade segment in our economy, so I’m hoping our new president will be understanding.

We in agriculture have food, we have feed, we have fuel; but we need that fourth leg — exports.

Q: With lots of new faces in the Minnesota State Legislature, do you see any hang-ups?

Will property tax be properly addressed?

Frederickson: I think property taxes will be addressed. It was part of the 2016 package until it got vetoed because it got stuck in with several other provisions that didn’t sit well with the governor. … A significant majority of districts in Minnesota will benefit from that 40 percent reduction of the levy referendum. That’s a big deal. I’m an old school board member from the Kerkhoven-MurdockSunburg district. I understand how we can help schools by offsetting some of the costs of publication education. I understand something like 270 of the 340 public school districts in Minnesota would be affected. That’s a big chunk. So many schools have asked for levies simply because school facilities have to be maintained. Yet they’re trying to accommodate new students, and often more students. They want better classrooms, better teaching equipment, and yes, better basketball and football facilities too.

Q: Could industrial hemp become a common crop on the Minnesota landscape?

Frederickson: Yes, I think it will. It’s a federal government-regulated crop, so therein lies the destiny. Perhaps the concerns are dubious. I’m told you’d have to smoke a couple acres of this food grade hemp to get high. The issue for us is alternative crops. Soybeans once were an alternative crop. Last year we had seven demonstration plots. This is a perennial crop. This year there will be a few more pilot projects. But because this is a federally-regulated process, it will take time. And to grow the industry, you need the processing facilities to make it useable. And of course there has to be a marketing structure. If this evolves, I would think this is textbook perfect to be built around a cooperative marketing structure which continues to be the marketing connection for the bulk of Minnesota field crops.

Q: You’re 73 years old in March. Are you in this department forever?

Frederickson: Health permitting, I’m going to stay until the governor sends me home or until we both retire. And that looks certain after this term expires.

The reality is that it’s time to get out of the way. v

Hefty brothers travel Midwest to teach farmers Q: Is the Environmental Protection Agency necessary or has it over-reached its intentions?

Brian: I think it’s great that we have some environmental protection. That’s awesome, but there’s a limit as to how much we need. Once we start ignoring science, then we have to draw the line on EPA decisions. When science says it’s OK, we should be moving forward. When science says its bad, then we’ve got to get rid of those negative issues.

Q: As you look at 2017, what crop appears to be the better break-even choice?

Brian: A lot of people today believe soybeans will be the choice. But the problem is, many haven’t priced any of their crop and they don’t know what their yields will be. They’ve got most of last year’s production still in their bins. Last year, it didn’t look like any crop would be profitable. Yet all of a sudden, many growers had 50 more bushels of corn and 20 more bushels of soybeans per acre and they realized they did make some money. When you start a manufacturing plant, you know what’s going to come out the other end. When we start this farming factory each spring, we really don’t know if we’ll have record yields or the poorest yields. We simply don’t know what Mother Nature is going to deliver. But don’t be bashful about forward pricing some of your crop when the market bumps up. Last week soybeans, for example, had a 50-cent boost. Selling some beans might have been good.

Q: Looking over this huge audience today,

one can see lots of younger farmers, but still mostly older farmers?

Brian: A few years back, I might have expected more younger farmers in our workshops. But it doesn’t seem to be happening. Dads, even granddads are showing up too. Partly it’s the simple fact that bankers are getting leery about loans to younger farmers, unless co-signed by a well-endowed dad or granddad, or father-on-law. Take a look at the average age of U.S. farmers and it’s actually a notch higher than 10 years ago. Thanks to this huge shift to precision farming technology, farming is simply an easier task. The older guys are staying at it even though they may have to attend more workshops to gather the same new learning. We in this commercial world of agriculture very much want to help all farmers.

Q: How do you guys maintain your energy?

Your workshops are non-stop. Are you slowing down?

Brian: After a day like today, I’ll be exhausted for a little while. But you quickly go right back at it.

Plus, it’s fun too. We wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t fun and profitable both for our farmer audience and for Hefty Seeds. When you’re passionate about what you are doing, you always find the energy. By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — On Jan. 16, about 720 farmers filled the convention center at Prairie’s Edge Casino in Granite Falls for the Ag PhD Winter Workshop hosted by brothers Darren and Brian Hefty of Hefty Seed Company, headquar- Brian Hefty tered in Baltic, S.D. While the free lunch was great, Darren and Brian Hefty’s dual presentation was the real meat and potatoes. They offered big screen visuals and a 66-page take-home handout that was the full meal deal on how to maximize production while controlling input costs for the 2017 crop year.

“When we have a group like today and we can make a difference on their farms this year, that’s what we are all about,” said Brian.

Q: Why do you attract tremendous turnouts at your agronomy workshops?

Brian: We have great attendance at our events. I think it all ties together. We do a lot of stuff on TV and radio. We offer a dozen different mobile apps on a variety of farming topics. And because of the constant introduction of new products for agriculture, farmers have endless questions. Hopefully we give people a good experience when they come to our workshops. Whenever you attend one of our workshops, you go home with a new book about information about crop production. Learning a little bit more about agronomy both in terms of higher yields and better profitability is our goal.

Q: You talked about boosting yields while cutting input costs. Are cutbacks in chemical and seed costs part of the answer?

Brian: Sure, cutting costs is part of this economic challenge; but a better focus is, how do we get the best return for whatever dollar we’re going to spend?

Today with generics now into the mainstream, you certainly can cut costs with similar chemistry of the branded products. It simply means switching products. There are so many generics and name-brand products that are combinations of old stuff. Plus, many companies are now offering rebate programs especially if you are into multiple applications of the same product.

Q: Are rebates suggesting the major players are feeling the heat of competition?

Brian: You’ve got to remember the big companies invest millions right back into research and development. Many aren’t paying dividends or issuing additional stocks. Their margins mostly go right back into more R&D. Their future is new innovations. A new product doesn’t have the shelf life it used to simply because R&D is generating so many new products. A new product means new profits. Often what they do is tie their old chemistry in with the new things and rebate it back to the farmer. This adds another arm into their total product listing.

Don’t be a heel: Lions Clubs want your old shoes

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer OLIVIA, Minn. — Soles4Souls is underway by Lions Clubs across Minnesota and Iowa. As the name implies, the Lions are gathering used shoes to donate to needy people, especially kids, around the world.

“We are told there are 46.5 million people living in poverty in the United States and 16.1 million of these are children. These folks need your shoes,” said Rich Haugen, Olivia Lions Club president.

Lions Club members are creative when they set their minds to community projects. Lions across Minnesota and Iowa are placing “Drop Your Shoes Here” boxes in their hometowns. The Olivia Lions, for example, have drop-off boxes at Dirks Furniture, Olivia Hardware, Page Snyder and Olivia Drug Stores, City Limits hair salon, two churches, the Renville County Hospital, even the Olivia liquor store.

Lions Club were thrilled to send a trailer full of shoes to Sheldon, Iowa.

“We got the word out. About 3,000 people show up for this event. We collected over 300 pair of shoes! Most of us have a collection of used shoes. This project lets you clean out your closets and help others in the process,” explained Olivia Lion Dr. Paul Buhr.

Laurie Diekman, of Clara City Lions Club, is the District 5M4 coordinator for this project. She first heard about the idea three years ago from a Hoffman, Minn., Lions Club member.

Related Diekman, “I thought, hmmm … we could do that.” And so the spark was ignited. Her Clara City Club gave it a go and since then, she’s been speaking about Soles4Souls at various Lions Club meetings. And she admits, “I’ve been amazed at the positive pickup on this project.”

Clara City Lions Club gathered 750 pair of shoes during its first year, 2013.

In 2014, they collected 2,112 pair. Last year they linked up with thrift stores to gather the stores’ shoes that weren’t selling. So in 2015, the numbers soared April 6, 2017 to over 10,000 pair.

As a special “We Can Do It” event for the Lions Midwinter Conference in Willmar this January, 8,023 pairs of shoes were brought in from 20 Lions Clubs!

“We were hoping for at least 5,000 pairs of shoes. It’s just great how Lions and communities are jumping into the project,” said Craig Schellberg of the Spicer Sun Rise Lions and project cochair with Diekman.

Diekman said Soles4Souls has now distributed shoes into 117 different countries as well as needy U.S. locations. About 40 percent of the shoes are targeted for foreign countries.

Distribution Shoes are packaged into boxes holding 20-24 pair. Boxes are then delivered to Sheldon, Iowa, for further distribution. To boost activity, a receipt is sent to each contributing Lions Club indicating the exact number of shoes and delivery date.

“Because everyone deserves a good pair of shoes, we think people will be very generous about this project,” said Paul Buhr.

On Nov. 28, Paul and Carole Buhr pulled out of Olivia with an enclosed trailer containing 1,169 pairs of shoes, heading for Sheldon, Iowa. With unloading assistance, the Buhrs were on the road back home again in two hours.

“What a great experience,” Paul said.

“The crew at Sheldon told us thousands of shoes come in weekly. The boxes get reloaded into shipping containers which are trucked to New Jersey and then loaded into cargo ships for delivery to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and especially Haiti which has suffered severe hurricane damage leaving thousands homeless.”

“We were told several thousand shoes also get transported to various welfare agencies in America. So our Olivia residents were also providing foot comfort to kids and adults in the United States too. You just get a good feeling when you realize the good will of this simple project,” said Carole. v

Baumgarten plans to do engineering work in Brazil after he completes his internship here. His economics degree may not be part of this engineering work, but he says it should help him better understand the world.

“After coming here to SDSU, I can see how my two majors combine to enhance value to a potential employer. I didn’t realize until I came here I can work in marketing, hedging and logistics. This simulated grain exchange facility at SDSU is a terrific learning center,” he said. “When I learn about trading basis when marketing beets, you also think about logistic and product engineering. And then of course, marketing and economics wrap up the entire education package.”

Sugar cane Sugar cane is a major crop of Brazil and sugar cane ethanol has become a huge crop in Brazil, especially in recent times when ethanol has become a leading product of the industry. Brazil currently has a 27 percent blend level so every gallon of gas contains 27 percent sugar cane ethanol. In his small state, roughly 22 million metric tons of sugar cane production is processed each season from 34,000 hectares (850,000 acres). Worldwide, Brazil is the biggest producer of ethanol. From Alagoas, Baumgarten estimates 70 percent of their total sugar and ethanol production is exported. Russia is the biggest buyer of both products, but the United States also purchases both Brazilian sugar and ethanol, he noted.

cheaper oil prices around the world. Input costs keep increasing. Yes, I am learning that production costs for corn here in America are considerably higher than our costs to grow sugar cane.”

The sugar processing plants make brown sugar.

“We make good use of the biomass residue. We use it as energy to power our sugar plants. So our sugar plants are self-sufficient and don’t contribute any greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This is clean energy,” said Baumgarten.

Culture trip “America is a country of significant contrasts,” said Baumgarten. “You have your major cities on both coastal areas with populations in the millions; you have your town of Olivia with 2,500 people; and Brookings with 20,000 or so. Yet the infrastructure in your towns and cities is so complete.”

His home state of Alagoas, Brazil, has 2.5 million people. The capitol is 1.2 million, but there is not much connection for health care and services outside of major cities.

“In the rural areas, the richer people are the land owners … many of which don’t live on their land.

They hire people to run their farms, take care of their livestock. The land owner just shows up occasionally to see how things are going. So there is little economic growth amongst the poorer, working class because their only opportunity is where they already are,” Baumgarten said.

He observed that the money in the United States seems to be more evenly distributed. He noted that

Yet Matheus Baumgarten enjoyed a sixday holiday stay in Olivia with Pam Dettman and John Dotson. He’s currently doing a graduate internship Matheus at South Dakota State University- Baumgarten Brookings.

His tour included a day of ag business visits with Mike Schjenken of the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative; Jeff Boersma at 212 Seed & Ag at Bird Island; Craig Hebrink, president of Co-op Country Farmers Elevator at Renville; and Jerry Frank, president of Home Town Bank, Olivia. The day began with the coffee crew at Olivia’s Chatter Box Café.

“I must say, that morning crew is a chatty bunch.

But does anyone listen?” said Baumgarten after the “intelligence briefing.”

Baumgarten’s graduate thesis is titled: “Risk hedge analysis of commodity freight cost: Case study of Alagoas sugar maritime freight.” Alagoas, his home state, has a shipping port and the thesis relates to freight costs for both brown sugar and ethanol to foreign ports, including the United States. He’s from a sugar cane production area of Brazil where cane is the number-one gross income generator. Sugar cane is a plant harvested every six to seven years.

Baumgarten speaks Portuguese, the native tongue of Brazil, and English.

“Weather is basically the same year-round because we’re just a hundred miles south of the equator,” Baumgarten said. “Summer temps are in the 90s; winter it drops to the 70s. Comfortable temperatures since we don’t get sticky hot like in the rain forests which get daily rains. Our winds are mostly gentle.”

Not so during his visit in Olivia with wind gusts up to 55 mph.

“Favorite hangout with my friends is the beach and 90 degree temps,” he said. “So suddenly experiencing minus 32 degree wind chill and 10 below zero temps was a bit of a challenge.”

Education His university education in Brazil concentrated on economics and production engineering. Baumgarten is enjoying the culture of the SDSU campus. Having grown up playing soccer, he is impressed by the new SDSU football stadium.

On his first day in the department of economics, a professor invited him to sit in with an investment club. Club members were international including students from China and Ghana. The U.S. students extended their hospitality by offering him rides to stores.

“Also, they helped me access computers and programs about your economic and marketing systems, especially in your basic commodities such as wheat,

Iowa ag secretary reviews key issues from 2016 DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey recently highlighted some of the top ag issues in Iowa in 2016.

“Iowa farmers saw record production for both corn and soybeans again in 2016. However, low prices are making profitability a real challenge on both the crop and livestock side. Despite the economic challenges, farmers are by nature optimistic and we continue to see investments in the future and new and innovative technologies that will allow them to be even more productive while also reducing environmental impact,” Northey said.

Iowa corn production is forecast at 2.69 billion bushels according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service Crop Production report. This surpasses last year’s record of 2.51 billion bushels. The statewide average yield is expected to be a record setting 199.0 bushels per acre, 7.0 bushels per acre higher than the previous record that was set last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 561 million bushels for Iowa. If realized, this will be the largest crop on record, 6.80 million bushels above last year’s record high. The statewide yield forecast is 59.0 bushels per acre, 2.5 bushels more than the previous record set last year.

However, the significant drop in crop prices over the past few years has made it a very challenging time on the farm economically. In many cases, current prices are below the cost of production for farmers. Average statewide corn prices fell from $3.37 to $3.008 from November 2015 to November 2016.

Statewide average soybean prices have recovered somewhat from $8.14 to $9.25 from November 2015 to November 2016, but in many cases are still below the cost of production.

It has also been a challenging year economically for Iowa livestock farmers. Cattle prices have continued to fall and were at $101 per hundredweight in October, down from $128 per hundredweight last year and $161 two years ago. Hog prices are also down from $55.50 in October 2015 to $41.70 in October 2016.

Iowa egg production has recovered from the devastating highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak which resulted in the depopulation of more than 30 million Iowa laying hens last year. Iowa egg production in October 2016 was 1.30 billion eggs. This is up 3 percent from last month, and up 71 percent from last year, according to the latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The average number of all layers on hand during October 2016 was 53.7 million, up 1 percent from last month, and up 55 percent from last year. However, egg prices have fallen dramatically, from $1.26 per dozen in October of 2015 to just $.21 per dozen in October of this year.

“In Brazil, you mostly have to look at the three big majors for good jobs after graduation. That would be law, medical and engineering to earn the bigger salary,” he said. “People go to the bigger cities just hoping to, at least, get service jobs.”

The tighter margins seen on the farm are starting to ripple through the economy. Land prices are down 5.9 percent over the past year. There have been several announcements of layoffs and mergers by manufacturers, machinery providers, seed companies, and other business that serve the agriculture industry.

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

n a side street in downtown Little Falls, a weather-worn sign announces simply, “Shoe Service.” Step inside, up two stairs, and you’ll find Marie Rakow carrying on a family tradition which started in the middle of the last century.

“My Dad was Melvin Marotte,” Marie said. “He repaired shoes for JBs in Little Falls. He quit there and came here to start his own shop in 1958.”

When Melvin started his shop, he bought top-quality equipment. The stitcher for sewing on heels was made in 1940 and was purchased used. Marie still uses it along with the heel nailer, McKay stitcher, sanding machine, and the three-in-one machine that her dad purchased.

“Dad always said you should keep a machine oiled. He said oil is cheaper than spare parts.”

Marie, whose shop smells a little like leather and a little like machine oil, took over from Melvin when he retired. She’s a little vague about when that was.

“So, when did you take over the shop?”

“About when he retired.”

“When was that?”

“I started working with my Dad when I was in high school.

I’ve been here for ages.”

Marie remembers back when she was working with her dad and there were so many shoes to repair that they would come into the shop in the evening to catch up. In those days, she and Melvin worked side by side to craft miracles for Little Falls’ damaged soles. Today, Marie can still extend the lifespan of your worn footwear. That is, if it’s made to be repaired!

Most contemporary shoes aren’t.

“Molded soles can’t be repaired,” she said.

The same is true for molded heels. And plastic shoes can’t be stitched.

It’s true the heel nailing machine doesn’t get the workout it used to; but when a customer drops in to request a jacket she left to be repaired, it’s clear that Marie’s Shoe Service has branched out.

“I put in a lot of zippers and I repair snowmobile and boat covers. I also repair purses and recondition leather jackets.”

Marie has repaired baseball mitts, put emblems on letterman’s jackets, and she’ll even polish and buff your shoes so they shine like a full moon. She also gives out free leather care advice to customers.

“You should oil those shoes more often,” she tells a man who has come to pick up a repaired pair of leather boots. “Use mink oil and put it on by hand. You’ll save oil that way.” v
