Klobuchar staff gets input from farmers on Farm Bill

According to Frederickson, the current Farm Bill is projected to cost 489 billion over five years, while the 2018 farm bill is projected to cost 466 billion. About 80 percent goes to the nutrition title and 20 percent goes to ag producers.

This spring and early summer, hearings will begin on the 12 titles of the farm bill, which include commodities, conservation, crop insurance, trade, credit, extension and more.

Credit One suggestion was to raise crop loan rates to help farmers. According to the Farm Service Agency website the commodity loan range for corn by county is $1.77- 1.89 per bushel. Raising the price to $3 would help farmers and give them more cash flow, said Joe Neaton, Minnesota president of National Farmers Organization.

Amy Klubuchars’s staff, along with Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson, traveled across the state for a two-day tour to gather input on the 2018 Farm Bill, Jan. 23-24. Klobuchar, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said via video she was ready to get to work on the new farm bill, starting with listening to farmers, who are the “backbone of the Minnesota economy.”

At the New Ulm meeting on Jan. 23, about 25 farmers came to let the senator know what’s working and what’s not. Staff was charged with bringing the information back to Klobuchar. Most attendants agreed that the Farm Bill was fine, but that it needed adjustments.

Extension leads herbicide resistant weed workshops

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor WASECA, Minn. — If you thought the days of walking beans are long gone, think again.

Herbicide resistance, particularly in common and giant ragweed, waterhemp and tall waterhemp, is a growing problem across Minnesota. The most limited tools are in soybean fields. That’s why the University of Minnesota Extension is holding meetings to educate farmers on creating weed management plans that include a variety of herbicide groups to attack multiple sites of action (SOA), along with adopting new and old cultural techniques.

While farmers are becoming all too familiar with glyphosate resistance, weeds are also showing resistance to other groups of herbicides.

Non-chemical options include using a rotary hoe, hand pulling, planting cover crops, crop rotation changes and altering planting dates. For instance, spring tillage and planting soybeans later may help manage early-emerging weeds. Scouting and walking beans is

critical.

Paul Knutson, who farms near Owatonna, said he believes he has giant ragweed that is resistant. He admits that his acreage is small enough that he can still hand pull. “I Mark Bernard use the walk-the-fields method as much as I can.”

Knutson was one of many farmers and certified crop advisors who attended an herbicide resistant weed program at the University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center in Waseca on Jan. 13. He talked to scientists about cover crops that may help in his fields.

“If we can reduce the amount of chemicals, that would be nice,” said Knutson.

For many producers, a greater mix of herbicides likely will be needed. Mark Bernard, a crop consultant who owns Agro-Economics in New Richland, advises using a pre-emergence herbicide and a variety of post-emergence herbicides to attack multiple sites of

action. A few guys will use some cultivation techniques too, said Bernard.

Tom Hoverstad, University of Minnesota scientist at SROC, presented a summary of his 2016 weed management trials in soybeans.

“We are going to have the opportunity to use dicamba in soybeans,” said Hoverstad.

For giant ragweed control in soybeans, he completed an Xtend Soybean Trial. Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Xtend soybeans are dicamba and glyphosate tolerant and to be used with XtendiMax, a low-volatility dicamba. In addition, BASF’s Engenia herbicide can be used in this system.

The Environmental Protection Agency has approved XtendiMax and Engenia. The products are under review by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. That means Liz Stahl XtendiMax and Engenia may be available by spring planting.

All the labels are very specific to target spraying and minimize drift. For instance, the XtendiMax label authorizes only one nozzle. Applicators must follow wind restrictions, downwind buffers to protect sensitive plants, and no ammonium sulfate can be used with it. Weeds must be less than 4 inches tall. In addition, spray tank contamination is an issue. And tanks need to be triple rinsed.

“I would consider hiring the spray part of it done,” said Hoverstad.

Meanwhile Dow AgroSciences offers Enlist Duo, which is dicamba and glyphosate, to be used on Enlist soybeans. Enlist Duo is approved by the EPA and registered by the MDA. However, the soybean seed awaits approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the Dow website, the company plans to launch the cropping system this year.

Make a plan Palmer amaranth has been confirmed in conservation plantings in Yellow Medicine and Lyon counties, but it’s

more widespread in Iowa. The plantings have been traced to contaminated seed mixes. Liz Stahl, University of Minnesota Extension educator, called Palmer amaranth “waterhemp’s evil cousin.”

Palmer amaranth is often resistant to multiple herbicides. The good news, said Stahl, is that the Palmer amaranth identified in Minnesota is not resistant. MDA is working to eradicate the aggressive weed that grows 2-3 inches per day, up to 6-8 feet tall.

In addition, Stahl identified weeds, such as waterhemp and giant ragweed, that are glyphosate resistant across Minnesota.

Your plan should include chemical and non-chemical methods and Stahl expects it will cost more and it won’t be simple. She advises talking to your neighbors about weed resistance in their fields.

“Plan that you do have resistance out there,” said Stahl.

Resistance is identified in herbicide groups 2 (ALS), 9 (glyphosate) and maybe 14 (PPO), according to the Extension.

Stahl recommends the following steps to build a weed management plan that include herbicides from multiple SOA groups.

Pre-emergence: Choose a pre-emergence herbicide to treat your soil that addresses major weed concerns. Preherbicides help to decrease the density and species of weeds, promote uniform size for post applications and increase the window to get post programs done, she explained.

The elements, especially wind and rain or snow, are what make cattle uncomfortable. Providing them with shelter from the elements is one way to help combat cold stress. A wind break is one simple solution. Providing a roof overhead is ideal.

The other major management tip for cold stress is focusing on nutrition.

Cold stress increases maintenance energy requirements but does not impact protein, mineral or vitamin requirements. The general rule of thumb is to increase the energy density of the ration by 1 percent for each degree below the lower critical temperature. One of the ways that cattle respond to cold stress is by increasing voluntary feed intake. To support this, make sure water is available, make sure enough feed is available, and make any diet changes incrementally.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The recent weather has proven it — winter is upon us. You hear quite often, “cattle do better in colder temperatures.” But have you ever wondered what that actually means? Research has shown time and again that the range at which a cow feels most comfortable is broad.

Anywhere between 25 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit is comfortable. At 25 F, we are usually wearing winter coats along with gloves and hats. A thick winter hair coat, rumen, and average body temperature around 101 F makes cattle more comfortable in cooler weather.

When is it “too cold” for cattle? The answer should be 25 F. However, that’s not the full story. Cattle can remain comfortable at lower temperatures with thicker hair coats. For example, in wet conditions with a summer coat, the lower critical temperature is 59 F. So this is when the cattle would start to feel cold stress. With a dry fall coat, the lower critical temperature is 45 F. With a dry winter coat, cold stress starts at around 32 F. Lastly, with a dry, heavy winter coat, cattle’s lower critical temperature is 18 F. With good body condition, a good coat, and dry conditions, cattle can stay comfortable to fairly low temperatures.

Under cold stress, cattle need to increase their metabolic rate to create more body heat. Simply put, they need

CORN — Corn traded to lows not seen in over a week as weather in South America improved and negative technical signals brought profit taking into the market. Even as corn edged lower, it didn’t seem like there was one single event that caused the tip. However, political actions didn’t help. For the week, March corn crumbled 7.25 cents lower to $3.62.5 per bushel. The July and December contracts each declined 6.5 cents to $3.76.5 and $3.89.25 per bushel respectively.

President Trump ruffled some PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. feathers this week when he St. Paul announced the plan to build a border wall and have Mexico pay for it. Initial plans included a 20 percent import tax on all products from Mexico to pay for the wall. Mexico quickly cancelled a scheduled meeting between their president, Enrique Peña Nieto, and President Trump. The plan was later discredited with spokesmen indicating it was just one of several plans under consideration.

Mexico is the biggest buyer of U.S. corn at 14 million metric tons, beef, pork, poultry and dairy; and the number-two buyer of U.S. soybeans behind China at 3.6 mmt.

The U.S. officially pulled out of Trans-Pacific Partnership talks this week. Keep in mind, this partnership was never official, but we were in talks. The president says he prefers bilateral agreements.

Since the end of October, the livestock markets have been on a recovery rally from the highs made in 2014. This has followed what appears to be a fairly common theme in commodity prices. The theme appears to be a return to inflation in the days ahead. So there has been a sentiment by speculators to buy all commodities as prices will soon rise. This plus reduced live supplies of live inventories has sparked the recent strength in livestock markets.

The cattle market has seen the cash market advance rather rapidly so far in the month of January.

As the cash market advances, one concern is the beef cutout has not followed the strength in cash.

This is beginning to squeeze the packer margins which could slow or end the current push to higher cash prices paid for live inventories. Another concern continues to be the slow movement of boxed beef as compared to recent years. If demand continues to remain at current levels, it would appear that there would be some difficulty in maintaining further strength in cash prices. Once again, it boils down to supply and demand to dictate the future prices for the cattle market. Producers should continue to monitor market conditions and protect inventories as warranted.

As Warren Buffet said, “You need cash. Cash is like oxygen. When you don’t need it, you don’t notice it.

When you do need it, it’s the only thing you think about.” A lot of us in production agriculture are living examples of this concept. Markets over the last 18 to 24 months, and even for the foreseeable future, have forced many to think about one thing only: the need for cash. It has been a very quick advance in cash prices as packers have scrambled to meet slaughter needs. Increasing slaughter capacity is rumored to be one of the catalysts behind the current strength in the hog market.

However, in the past few weeks, the futures market has met considerable resistance and the market has virtually gone sidewise during that time. Noticeably, the pork cutouts at the same time have also virtually gone sideways. These events could be signaling a change in the current rally that we have experienced over the past several months. Without the advancement in the pork cutout, the packer margins are being squeezed which could reflect into a less aggressive stance in accumulating inventory.

Here, as with the cattle, supply and demand will dictate the future prices in the hog market. One note from a seasonal standpoint: at this time of year, the market usually sees a moderate price decline into the Easter period before once again moving toward a prospective summer high. Therefore, producers should remain aware of current trends in the market and protect inventories as needed. v

Outlook: March corn set a new high for the move at $3.71 that resulted in a key reversal lower before the day was over. The $3.71 level will be viewed as resistance with first support not seen until the $3.55 area, then $3.45.5 per bushel. Corn has garnered support from very good demand, weather concerns in South America and the expectations that the United States will reduce corn acres this spring. However, the weather window is narrowing and, longer term, a corn carryout over 2 billion bushels is not overtly friendly. The threat of trade wars may contribute to buyers’ cautiousness. With managed money now net long, it could set the stage for a correction lower in the short run.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans continued the slide lower which began the previous week. March soybeans posted daily lows that were lower than the previous day’s low for six straight sessions. Even as soybeans tumbled, it felt controlled and not a chaotic crash. Grower sales dried up with the price decline, but basis levels were steady to lower. For the week, March soybeans lost 18.25 cents at $10.49.25, July was down 16.5 cents at $10.65.5 and November beans were off just 3.5 cents at $10.25.25 per bushel.

March soymeal dropped $5.70 to $343.00 and soyoil fell .88 to 34.27 cents. Soyoil has been under pressure over uncertainty about possible changes to the fuel volume mandates set by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Renewable Fuel Standard. The blenders’ tax credit of $1 per gallon expired at the end of 2016. If it is reinstated, it could be done retroactively as it was in 2015. There are also questions whether the credit will stay with blenders or be switched to producers, if it is in fact reinstated. If it is switched to producers, it may mean less biodiesel imports from Argentina.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange cut its Argentine soybean production projection from 56 mmt to 53.5 mmt. The latest USDA figure was 57 mmt. The BAGE estimated that 1.9 million soybean acres were affected by flooding and about 1 million acres were lost. The Argentina government projected that 1.6 million soybean acres and 395,000 corn acres will have yield loss due to flooding. Seeing the range of estimates makes it difficult to get a good handle on the situation. Most private production estimates for Argentina are running from 51 mmt to 54 mmt.

Rain has slowed soybean harvest progress in the Mato Grosso region in Brazil. Harvest has just

begun in the Parana, Brazil’s second-largest producing state. The Brazilian government pegged the bean harvest in Mato Grosso at 16.3 percent, up from 11.5 percent last week. This is their fastest harvest pace ever. AgRural put Brazil’s overall bean harvest at 4.3 percent complete compared to 2.2 percent last year. Weather conditions in both Argentina and Brazil look fine through Feb. 5.

If someone is looking for a problem area to be concerned about, it may be central Argentina. After heavy rains earlier in the month, those areas have dried out and will need rain in the next couple of weeks.

Weekly export sales were in line with expectations this week at 19.8 million bushels, but down from the previous week’s 36 million bushels. China is now on their Lunar New Year holiday until Feb. 3. Business from China usually slows to a trickle during this week. Total U.S. export commitments are a record for this time of year at 1.8 billion bushels which represents over 89 percent of the USDA’s 2.05 billion bushel export forecast. We need to average just 8.4 million bushels of sales per week through the balance of the marketing year, but sales will continue to contract as South American supplies become available.

In its update this week, Informa Economics pegged U.S. 2017 soybean acreage at 88.6 million acres compared to last year’s 83.4 million soybean acres. Using a yield of 47.2 bushels per acre, they expect a crop of 4.15 billion bushels and a carryout of 535 million bushels. A carryout of this magnitude casts a negative long-term shadow over soybean prices.

Outlook: March soybeans continue to deteriorate.

Short term support may not come into play until the $10.33 area, then the $10.15 per bushel area. First resistance will be viewed at the 10-day moving average at $10.59.75 per bushel. Moving forward, weather developments in South America will be key to price direction. Managed money net long positions in the week ended Jan. 24 increased to their largest level since last June. If Argentina’s weather continues to cooperate, their long liquidation could extend the downside in soybeans. China will be off the market until Feb. 3 to celebrate the Lunar New Year. This usually means little trade activity from that region.

Nystrom’s Notes: Contract changes for the week ending Jan. 27: March Minneapolis wheat fell 8.5 cents, Chicago was down 7.75 cents and Kansas City was 8.75 cents lower. Crude oil was down a nickel at $53.17, ULSD dropped 2.75 cents, RBOB was 4.25 cents lower and natural gas gained 14.75 cents. The U.S. dollar index at midday Jan. 27 was down .230 points for the week. v

Ethanol production was slightly lower for the week at 1.051 million barrels per day as crush margins continued to get squeezed and stockpiles built.

Ethanol stocks jumped to 911 million gallons from 887 million the previous week for an increase to 21.7 million barrels. Ethanol crush margins have moved to a negative 4 cents. Weekly corn export sales were excellent at 53.9 million bushels. This pushed total export commitments to 1.5 billion bushels or 69 percent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2.225 billion bushel export outlook. We need to average 23.8 million bushels of sales through August to hit the USDA’s projection. There will likely be rumblings that the corn export line may need to increase on subsequent reports.

The cattle on feed report released Jan. 27 was friendly for corn. Cattle on feed was 100 percent.

Placements at 118 percent were the second-largest of the last 11 years, and marketings at 107 percent were in line with expectations. The commitment of traders report as of Jan. 24 showed managed money has switched from net short to net long.

Informa Economics this week updated its 2017 U.S. corn acreage number to 90.5 million acres. In 2016, U.S. farmers planted 94 million acres to corn. Using a yield of 170.4 bushels per acre, production would

December 2015. The 50-state total, at 17.9 billion on pounds, was up 2.2 percent. Revisions added 27 million pounds to the original November estimate, now put at 16.1 billion pounds, up 2.8 percent from a year ago. Fourth quarter output was up 2.4 percent from 2015, with 10,000 additional cows.

December cow numbers in the 23 states totaled 8.69 million head, up 10,000 from November and 53,000 more than a year ago. Output per cow averaged 1,931 pounds. This is up 35 pounds from a year ago and the highest November output since the series began in 2003. n There was even more fodder for the bears in USDA’s latest Cold Storage report which showed there’s plenty of product in storage despite strong butter and cheese demand in October and November.

December butter stocks stood at 174.9 million pounds. This is up 13.7 million pounds or 9 percent from November, (when one would have expected a strong drawdown) and were up 19.9 million pounds or 13 percent from December 2015.

Examining costs aids cash flow position — because sometimes when a piece of equipment needs to be repaired, we automatically send it in for repair without any questions. But we need to look back at each individual equipment item on our balance sheet and really ask whether we should be repairing it. Or have repair costs gotten to the point where it justifies actually replacing it. Could we be more productive or more efficient at a lower cost? The same thing goes for determining in-house work versus outsourcing labor or specialized services. If we have a large equipment line that has a great deal of debt to run our cropping enterprise, perhaps we need to evaluate outsourcing that and reducing our equipment line to make the operation more cash efficient.

Most operations have already gone through the process of liquidation of non-performing assets. It’s unusual in the current environment to have equipment or assets just sitting there not generating revenue. But it’s always a key item to go back and evaluate. “Hey, are we getting the most value out of this piece of equipment or this particular asset?” If we have a lot of wooded acres that we own, are we generating any revenue off of that? Maybe there’s a source of revenue to investigate.

Lastly, I think it’s always important to look at debt structure. Speak with your lender, with your consultant or your advisory team to look at how to perhaps re-balance debt. Can things be adjusted in a certain way that helps reduce our cash outflow?

These are all short-term items which can help generate more. Evaluating these steps puts your operation in a better position cash-wise and helps sustain your business long-term. v

Demand is strong, but much product is in storage to 93.5 cents per pound — the lowest price since Nov. 29. But the price inched back some on Jan. 27 to close at 94.75 cents. The total cheese inventory stood at 1.21 billion pounds, up 24 million pounds or 2 percent from November and 60.5 million pounds or 5 percent from a year ago.

Dairy prices continued to weaken during the fourth week of the new year, but with a surprise end. Cash block cheese fell to $1.64 per pound on Jan. 24, the lowest price since October 2016; but regained some ground and closed Jan. 27 at $1.6875 — down a penny on the week, but 22.75 cents above a year ago. The barrels closed at $1.4475. This is down 8.75 cents on the week, also the lowest price since October, 1.75 cents above a year ago, and an unsustainable 24 cents below the blocks. Ten cars of block traded hands on the week at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and 27 of barrel. n Reports on milk availability for central cheese producers vary, according to Dairy Market News. Some are finding milk on the spot market and their dedicated milk supplies will suffice for the weeks to come. Others are seeing tighter supplies. Cheese production continues at fully active levels. With most cheddar styles, demand has been fair to relatively strong. Pizza cheese producers are reporting fair demand during the Super Bowl season, with sufficient inventories.

Western cheese output is also active with good supplies of milk reported.

“Demand remains fairly steady after a strong holiday season. Price fluctuations are prompting buyers in export

markets to make a few more purchases. Domestic retail, cut and wrap, and food service demand has remained solid. Demand for cheese destined for pizzas is strong amid the football playoffs and Super Bowl. Inventories for fresh cheese blocks are in good supply, but do not appear to be overly heavy. Barrel stocks are still long,” according to Dairy Market News.

Spot butter sank to $2.1850 on Jan. 26 – the lowest price since Dec. 15; but rallied some the next day to close at $2.22. This is down 3 cents on the week and dead-even with a year ago.

Dairy Market News reports cream supplies for butter makers continue to be abundant. Spot cream offers are available, but some butter producers are sufficiently stocked with cream.

“Available cream means butter production continues to run at fully active levels and bulk butter is building in storage. Print production, which had been slow in previous weeks, is starting to strengthen as some butter makers begin, or are in the midst of, spring holiday preparations. Reports on demand are on the fair to strong side. Some contacts report demand is improving from earlier in the month, but remains behind last year’s mark,” Dairy Market News reported.

Heavy cream supplies continue moving into butter production in the west and butter output remains strong, according to Dairy Market News.

White Dorper and Dorper sheep are a good choice for small farmers because there is a good market for breeding stock and the sheep require no shearing or tail docking, according to Mitcham.

“They are attractive, easy to care for, thrive on forages alone, and have great personalities that are calm and inquisitive,” she said.

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent SUMNER, Iowa — Stephanie Mitcham raises a flock of about 1,000 Dorper, White Dorper, and Ile de France sheep on 120 acres of pasture near Sumner, in northeastern Iowa’s corn and soybean country.

Dorper sheep are a hair and wool-shedding breed with origins in South Africa. Two separate Dorper breeds were originally developed in that country and Stephanie’s Crane Creek Farm has both breeds.

The Dorper has a white body with a striking black head. The breed is the result of a cross with the moderately-prolific Horned Dorset and the Fat Tailed Blackhead Persian sheep. The Blackhead Persian gave the Dorper its telltale black head as well as its “shedding sheep” characteristic. Shedding sheep have a coat that is made up of both hair and wool and they shed both, making shearing unnecessary.

The White Dorper is also a shedding sheep. But, unlike the Dorper, it has a pure white body.

“Some of the White Dorpers originated from the Fat Tailed Van Rooy sheep crossed with Dorset Horn sheep,” Mitcham said. “Other White Dorpers originated from the Blackhead Persian crossed with Dorset Horn just like the Dorpers.”

Van Rooy sheep are also shedding sheep and are sometimes called the Van Rooy White Persian.

Although the Dorset and White Dorset are fairly similar in lineage as well as look, the two breeds do have some different characteristics.

“The White Dorpers tend to have better shedding coats and more docile dispositions,” Mitcham said.

Breeding Mitcham raises purebred Dorpers and White Dorpers. Research has shown that crossbreeding White Dorpers with at least one breed can produce a highly productive commercial sheep.

“The White Dorpers, when crossed with Romanovs, tend to raise more pounds of lamb as compared to Dorper-Romanov and Katahdin-Romanov crosses,” she said.

couple of warehouses outside Minnesota. Padula explained, “The bulk of that wool is being exported to China, to India, to other low-cost textile manufacturers and being sold to consumers in those countries.”

In that case, why is wool imported into the United States? “Because U.S. sheep producers, especially here in the Midwest, are mostly raising dual-purpose sheep that don’t produce the finer type of wool being used in many of these new fabrics. Mostly, our wool goes into the outerwear garments where heavier, bulkier wool is the choice,” he said.

When it comes to finer wools, the buzz is Merino, said Padula. Merino is a wool-type sheep. He said many U.S. sheep growers use breeds with some Merino pedigree so we do have the ability to capture that market.

He pointed out that most Minnesota wool gets transported out of state for the initial process, the scouring or washing to remove the lanolin and dirt.

Commercially, that occurs in two places, Texas and South Carolina.

Lamb meat It’s a different story with lamb meat. Most Minnesota mutton goes to either of the coasts because those population centers have high lamb consumption.

“But there is now a growing ethnic population here in the central United States that is accustomed to eating lamb,” Padula said. “However, most of the Minnesota lamb is processed in Illinois, Ohio or Colorado.

Many consumers are acquainted with leg of lamb and lamb chops.

“Interest is now growing for something called lamb bacon. We realize there are ethnic and religious groups that do not consume pork. But they are looking for something that has that bacon type experience and

We have such a growing segment of new cultures across America used to lamb in their diets; but not necessarily the traditional leg of lamb offering. And not to be ignored is the growing demand for organic lamb production.”

Padula urges caution on going organic due to certification requirements. “We can’t all go organic. But if some do, then go for it,” he said. “The science doesn’t show that it’s any better, both in terms of growing the sheep, and in the nutritive value of organic mutton.”

Global view China continues to be the number-one sheep producer in the world while Australia leads in wool production. Padula said sheep numbers worldwide are slowly going down because of ongoing drought conditions in Australia. That will impact the amount of lamb meat and wool globally.

“We’re a global player here in the United States,” explained Padula. “There’s no tariff on sheep or wool.

There’s no quota on lamb meat or wool coming into America. So we’re freely traded and that means at the whim of the international market.”

Worldwide, the United States doesn’t make the top 10 in production numbers.

“Minnesota producers continue to traditionally lead the United States on production efficiencies ... lambs per ewe,” stated Padula. “That’s partly due to the research community at the University of Minnesota which, way back in the ’60s and ’70s, were doing genetic research on highly prolific breeds of sheep. The Pipestone Wool Management program got behind these efforts. So we lead the nation on pounds of lamb per ewe and weaning percentage.” v

Producers gathered at the Minnesota Lamb and Wool Producer Shepherd’s Holiday, held Dec. 2-4, in Chaska, were energized by wool’s comeback.

“Wool has taken on a new life as a technical masterpiece of nature. It performs like the technical fibers and out-performs them on other characteristics. Consumers today are looking at natural, sustainability issues,” Padula said. “Wool fits those needs and thanks to new styles and new uses of wool, it’s not the old-style wool that people remember … the itchy, the scratchy, the heavy, bulky materials.”

Padula is a long-time consultant for the American Wool Council and director of the West Central United States Sheep and Wool Marketing Association. He has worked in the wool production, marketing and quality improvement for over 25 years and helped develop national wool quality improvement and assurance programs.

He maintains a flock of Targhee ewes and commercial Merino sheep near St. Cloud.

“Today the new fabrics and designs are incorporating lighter weight wool — producing wool garments totally different with the consumers. Wool has come of age. Consumers are becoming more eco-conscious of what they are buying. Wool fits that perfectly,” Padula said.

This is not just a U.S. phenomenon. Padula credits designers and consumers in other countries for leading the parade on this new attitude and regard of wool and wool-based fabrics and clothing for both men and women.

“As the sheep industry and wool industry in other countries promotes the advantages of wool, U.S. clothing designers started asking, ‘How can we do this in America?’ Padula said. “So the reality is that we should credit the rest of the world for waking us up to these new standards of thinking of wool as indeed a premier fiber.”

Padula thinks producers should be part of the trend.

They should be aware of new attitudes, new thinking and new designs that consumers, especially women, are buying into these days. “It’s not the same old wool fiber and wool fabrics that we’re used to,” he said.

In addition, the goats strip the bark off of buckthorn. The plant then sends out runners, but the goats keep those trimmed back so that competing plants have an advantage over the buckthorn. The goats also defoliate the buckthorn.

“People are going out with weed whips and sprays to control these plants,” Jake said. “Basically, these plants are just a forage that isn’t being utilized. So we are converting these unwanted plants into something else — meat or dairy — with the goats.”

As the Hansons have built their ewe flock to 35, they have selected for other genetic traits, including good maternal instincts.

“A ewe with good mothering instincts will give birth to a set of twins, lick them vigorously, and nudge them toward her udder,” Margo said. “She keeps track of her lambs when they are small and calls and looks for them if they are out of her sight.”

Margo and Ray also select for ewes who have calm dispositions, even during a crisis. For example, last spring Margo came upon a ewe giving birth.

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent TWIN LAKES, Minn. — When Margo and Ray Hanson returned to Minnesota from Alaska 11 years ago, they were looking around for a sheep breed to raise on their 85-acre farm bordering Marsh Creek in the Red River Valley. They call their farm Marsh Creek Crossing.

“I grew up on a cattle ranch, so I know something about cattle,” Margo said. “But we felt sheep would be easier to handle as we’re in our 60s. We love to eat lamb and we also thought sheep would be better suited for our pastures, which are mixed woods and meadows.”

The Hansons began asking around for ideas on sheep breeds and they discovered that the local Extension Agent, Jim Stordahl, had Border Leicesters — an English breed dating back to the mid-1700s.

“He told us about their mellow temperament, good mothering abilities, beautiful fleece, non-aggressive rams, and hardy lambs,” Margo said. “We were sold!”

City ordinances don’t always welcome foraging goats GOATS, from pg. 14 Spitzack, who works for Goat Dispatch, said one of the favorite items the goats enjoy eating is old Christmas trees.

“Jake saw an article where goats were eating old Christmas trees,” Spitzack said. “So we went to the some of the neighbors’ places and got their old Christmas trees and did a little study. Now we have the River Bend Nature Center in town here where there is a drop off site for people to leave their Christmas trees. We hauled about 100 of them home two days ago.

The goats are just having a blast eating them.”

Spitzack added that goats are good moderators when it comes to their diet.

They won’t overdo it on any one item.

He said they’ll eat on the Christmas trees for a while, then eat some hay followed by stripping bark off of brush.

“They don’t over-consume on one thing,” Spitzack said. “They are very good at finding a variety of things to eat.”

Goat care Raising and caring for goats isn’t all fun and games. Amanda said there is a lot of work behind the scenes that goes into care for the health of the animals.

“Veterinarians aren’t really trained in caring for goats,” Amanda, a registered nurse, said.

There is a lot to keeping (the goats) alive. And there is a lot of stress with this.”

In addition to veterinarian care, there are other hurdles Goat Dispatch has to deal with.

“A lot of the cities have ordinances against goats,” Jake said. “So a park or homeowners will express interest, but then we can’t set up because there are rules against it. So we are taking these winter months to visit with some of these cities and work with them on their rules so they can have the option

of this ecologically-friendly option of dealing with noxious and invasive species.”

Amanda and Jake are working on growing their herd. They are crossing breeds that have the specific foraging traits they want. And the hard work is paying off. Jake said there are lot of new bookings and more importantly a lot of customers returning from previous years.

“This isn’t a onetime solution,” Jake said. “It is an ongoing maintenance. Some people book us a couple times per year, others once a year, or even once every couple of years. It depends on your individual situation.”

Lamb and wool producers operating in black ink From my perspective the lamb industry is better off than the livestock industries and also corn, soybeans and wheat producers. Lamb isn’t super high-priced right now; but with lower feed costs ... there is profit in lamb production — Jeremy Geske an average slaughter weight of 1,314 pounds, produces 25.8 billion pounds of meat. With hogs at 276 pounds processing weight, yearly meat production is 23.2 billion pounds.

At the Dec. 2-4 Shepherd’s Holiday of the Minnesota Lamb and Wool Producers, use of antibiotics to help prevent and treat disease was a major topic. However, Geske said a new rule was announced on Dec. 2 which eliminated minor species from the proposal.

“It will still have an impact on sheep producers, but not nearly the impact we thought was going to happen,” he said.

Geske indicated the push against antibiotics in livestock is mostly from animal rights organizations. “Anything they can do to make raising livestock more difficult seems to be their agenda.

The new ruling, as explained to us yesterday, will still require working with a veterinarian when antibiotics are involved. But that’s basically just good management anyway.” v

One would think a steady growth in sheep numbers would increase producer membership, but member numbers have stayed about the same. “We gain a few members each year, but some drop out or retire each year also.

Our membership stays around 250 members. We have a little over 2,000 producers in Minnesota.”

Total U.S. production is about 5.21 million head of sheep and lambs. Texas leads with about 740,000 head; California is second with 550,000 head; and Colorado is third with 365,000 head. Minnesota ranks in the top 10 with about 220,000 head. According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there are slightly more than 1 billion sheep worldwide!

Over the past 200 years, the U.S. sheep population has come full circle.

From about 7 million head in the early 1800s, numbers peaked at 56 million in 1945. Since 2003, the emphasis changed from wool production to meat.

As a result, with average live weight of 135 pounds, the industry is currently producing 151 million pounds of meat yearly. By comparison, beef cattle, with

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer CHASKA, Minn. — Sheep producers are one of the few agricultural enterprises operating in black ink due to sheep numbers, according to Minnesota Jeremy Geske Lamb and Wool Producers Secretary Jeremy Geske.

“Sheep numbers nationwide have been in a slow decline for several years,” said Geske. “We only raise about half of what we consume so there is certainly room for producers to expand.”

A good reason for that expansion is the surge of interest in wool. “Wool is an excellent fiber,” Geske explained. “It can be more expensive, but clothing manufacturers and consumers are finding out it’s worth more too. It lasts longer. It has unique qualities for warmth and durability. It’s a good product and more people are discovering its value. Our producers have long known you capture value from both sources — mutton and wool.”

This “booklet for cooklets” is aimed at the younger set — both in recipe selection and in ease of preparation. That’s no reason to suggest, however, that adults won’t be just as pleased with many of these kiddie concoctions. Age is merely a state of mind! It’s okay to play with your food no matter what generation you belong to. n These “snails” are full of cinnamon and cream cheese deliciousness. They prove that one key to cooking with kids is KISS: Keep It Simple, Silly.

Cinnamon Snails 4 slices bread 4 tablespoons cream cheese, softened 3 tablespoons sugar 1-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted Trim the crusts from the bread slices. Spread 1 tablespoon of cream cheese on each slice of bread.

Roll up the bread slices with cream cheese on the inside. Cut each roll into thirds. Stir together sugar and cinnamon. Dip each cut roll into the melted butter, then in the cinnamon/sugar mixture. Place rolls seam side down on an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Serve warm or cool. Adult help: Assist with cutting the bread and using the oven. n You don’t have to wait for St. Patrick’s Day to serve green food. Any day can be Dr. Suess Day. Seems like the simple old doctor stays popular throughout the years, no matter what new technological gadgets there may be.

A touch of Norway

H

anska has always celebrated its Norwegian heritage with a Syttende Mai festival. As with most events, there is a need to keep interest up.

“To keep it going sometimes we have to have projects,” said Alicia Helling, a Hanska promoter. “The first project was the town hall that had been built back in the 1800s by the townspeople.”

The hall, with its stage and balcony, was refurbished and updated and still serves as a performance and gathering locale. It was when Helling and her husband visited Norway that she got an idea for another project — a stabbur.

A stabbur is a granary or storage house on Norwegian farms, built on pillars to keep out rodents. The second story was used to dry meat and provide sleeping quarters for hired help. She thought a replica would be very appropriate in Hanska.

Some folks thought of it as “Alicia’s folly,” she said.

But Helling was passionate about her vision and, joined by others, they started raising money. At the same time, there was a man living on a farm near New Ulm who had built a couple of log cabins. A stabbur has similar construction. The vision and the builder were there. All that was needed was the funding.

They were making slow progress when a benefactor — James Amundson — stepped forward and said, whatever it takes, let’s get it done. With his monetary donation, the work went forward.

The builder, Frank Vanderveur, got white pine trees which were being removed for the construction of I-35. He used them as the logs and constructed the stabbur on the farm. It was then disassembled, brought to the Hanska park and reassembled.

The Hanska stabbur is larger than those in Norway. It functions as a museum and as a backdrop for wedding and graduation photos. One of its displays is a model of a stave church, which took the builder three years to craft in exquisite detail from popsicle sticks.

The stabbur has become a prized landmark of the town’s Norwegian heritage.

When people from Norway visit Hanska, “they’re surprised and impressed,” said Helling.

“They are not expecting to see a stabbur.”
