The Secretary was too kind. NPPC’s reaction was 100 percent baloney. It, like its contract-enforcing packer pals, of course knew the proposed rules originated in the pre-Trump 2008 Farm Bill. Big Meat’s political allies in Congress, however, effectively bottled up the changes after Republicans retook the House in 2010.

That ended in 2016 when Congress approved USDA’s funding without the previous years’ GIPSA handcuffs. Free to follow the law — the bipartisan 2008 Farm Bill law — USDA did its duty. It released the long-in-waiting rules Dec. 14. Big Meat went to DEFCON 5 an instant thereafter.

In perfect contrast to the packer-captured meat groups, however, the nation’s two largest general farm groups, the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Farmers Union, offered vigorous endorsements for all three GIPSA proposals.

AFBF’s president, Zippy Duvall, a Georgia poultry farmer, noted the rules (if finalized) will “better protect individual farmers from discriminatory treatment” in the market, provide “greater transparency … hold companies accountable and give farmers a voice.”

But that’s precisely what the Big Boys hate about the rules: all provide more sunshine to livestock and poultry markets that now are dominated by in-thedark, contract production.

For example, GIPSA’s interim rule would allow farmers and ranchers to “only prove they were treated unfairly by a company to win a legal remedy,” explained Chuck Abbott for the Food and Environmental Reporting Network Dec. 15.

It would replace today’s standard that requires the producer to provide proof “that harm has been done to the entire market” before any individual is granted relief.

The rules “enjoy bipartisan support in Congress [and] I’m glad [USDA acted] to help level the playing field…” said Iowa’s GOP Sen. Charles Grassley.

But that political support will be quickly tested because a Trump-led USDA can kill the interim rule and two proposed rules by simply withdrawing them

Have a purpose: A corn stalk has one purpose: to grow an ear of corn. But that one purpose affects so many other parts of life. Spend your life accomplishing your purpose, even if your growing season isn’t as long as you had hoped. You never know who you are inspiring.

Black layering isn’t always good: While it’s good in the life cycle of a corn plant, just remember to wash it off before coming to the supper table.

Bloom where you are planted: The corn does this.

You may not be where you want to be in life, but it’s important to be your best person — no matter where you have been planted.

And lastly, Give life a whorl: The corn plant grows one leaf at a time out of a whorl. It will always put 100 percent of its energy into being productive, even if some leaves have been damaged along the way.

Giving up is usually not an option. A corn plant is much like a farmer.

Without this kind of thinking, it would certainly be a corn dog’s life.

The individual has a desire to farm, but lacks the financial means. Wanting to avoid the large debt needed for start-up costs, he or she is willing to invest time, energy, resources and sweat equity in return for an opportunity to farm.

Ag Link matches up fledgling farmers with a retiring farmer who plans to retire within the next five to 10 years, but does not have anyone to continue the farm business. In addition to allowing for the farm business to continue, the retiring farmer can benefit from tax savings, such as reduced capital gains and income tax.

To start the Ag Link process, beginning farmers complete an online application. Complete a financial analysis of assets and resources so you are prepared to discuss what you can contribute to the farm business. Your assets may be mainly in labor and educational skills. Or you may have some of your own machinery. You need to be able to show what you can contribute toward the farm business.

Ag Link will help complete a financial analysis in order to determine whether there is enough income for everyone involved to feel secure, and that the finances are sufficient to meet expectations. If the applicant is not an Iowa resident, there is a $50 registration fee to be entered into the Ag Link database.

Retiring farmers who wish to be entered into Ag Link will also complete an online application. If you are not an Iowa resident, there is a $100 registration fee.

Retiring farmers should have a goal for the future of their farm business. Is there enough income to bring a younger farmer into the business and to allow you to retire later with the income you expect? What values, education, and goals do you expect and want from someone joining your farm business? An Ag Link coordinator can assist in getting a clearer picture of what is involved in transitioning your farm business.

Learning networks Iowa Extension also offers 18 Farmer Learning Networks for beef, swine, dairy, farm management and commercial horticulture. These networks are established around the state to train new farmers in achieving an edge on growing and managing their new farm business. The groups will meet several times a year for workshops addressing current issues in each commodity group. Participants share new methods and ideas related to their particular farming interest. Network groups are organized by location and product focus.

“Young farmers today more often than not fall in a millennial category, and as a rule, place value on peer-to-peer learning,” said Laura Cunningham.

A Beginning Farmers Conference takes place annually at Iowa State University in Ames. This year’s conference will take place on Feb. 4 and is designed for beginning and experienced farmers to come together, network, and share ideas. The conference will feature speakers on topics including commodity marketing, government programs for beginning farmers, animal agriculture and farm succession.

By Carolyn Van Loh The Land Correspondent NORA SPRINGS, Iowa — Gone are the days when farmers simply assume one or more of their children will take over the family farm. Children growing up on the farm were accustomed to helping tend to the animals and growing or harvesting field crops, so the transfer was relatively simple. Because of the complexity of the 21st-century farming industry, a number of young adults earn a college degree in a specific area of agriculture before embarking on a farming career.

A young person interested in farming may not have the training needed to establish their own farm; nor an older family member to provide financial assistance. After discussions concerning this issue, the 1994 Iowa legislators put a law into effect which brought together older farmers with young people interested in farming.

The law created the Beginning Farmer Center to facilitate the transition of farming operations from established farmers to beginning farmers. Another goal of the legislation was to develop models to increase the number of family farms in Iowa.

The Beginning Farmer Center, a part of Iowa State University Extension, brings young and older generations together. Aaron and Laura Cunningham, of Nora Springs, Iowa, exemplify the benefits of the program. The Cunninghams own SkyView Farms, a pasture-to-plate beef operation in Floyd County.

They market their beef directly to consumers under their own label. They hope Aaron’s father will be able to transition the management of the family corn and soybean farm to them.

“Our family attended a series of Farm Bureau workshops a few years back, and it helped get our transition planning process started with tools to discuss individual and family goals, business structure, skills evaluation, financial and estate planning,” Laura recalled.

“While it sounds simple and easy to go from father to son/daughter-in-law, for us and many young farm families we’ve met, it’s no simple or quick task. Both Farm Bureau and the Beginning Farm Center offer resources to help engage in the tough conversations needed to work on these types of plans.”

The Beginning Farmer Center works to coordinate education programs and services for beginning farmers across the state. By assessing the needs of beginning and retiring farmers, the center is able to develop, coordinate and deliver targeted education to beginning and retiring families. These programs encompass a broad spectrum of topics, from financial management and planning to human health and the environment.

Ag Link Iowa Extension has also developed the Ag Link service to help preserve the family farm business by matching beginning farmers, who do not own land, with retiring farmers who do not have heirs to continue the family farm business. Ag Link maintains a database of potential beginning farmers and landowners.

Ag Link is for a beginning farmer who wants to find a way to pursue or continue a farming career.

Kuhn brings variable rate equipment to United States

Fast forward to 2017 and it’s now the thinking — and the reality — of virtually every farmer.

At the recent Minnesota Cattle Industry Conference in Bloomington, Rod Fluegge’s display booth featured a variety of Kuhn Equipment banners and handouts. But the attention centered on a video showing a new 3-point hitch fertilizer applicator which featured on-the-go variable application.

Beef’s future hinges on finding new global markets In addition, more export opportunities for beef are needed. The NCBA also admits more export opportunities are needed. Today, only about 13 percent of U.S. beef production gets into export markets.

“That’s extremely important because that equates to about $335 per head extra revenue,” Woodall said.

“Much of that is because processors can charge premiums for products that we don’t eat here in the United States — beef tongue, livers, hearts, kidneys.

Those bring premiums in international markets.

“Our job is not only to maintain existing markets, but to find new markets. We know that 96 percent of the world’s consumers live outside of the United States,” he said.

NCBA also pushes against the growing influence of anti-ag activists. Woodall said many animal activists find roles on the boards of major agricultural companies.

“We need to expose these organizations for what they are,” he said. “The Humane Society of the United States, for example, claims to be out there helping dogs, cats, and other pets. Yet less than 1 percent of the millions they raise goes towards helping animals. The rest gets directed toward their political activism nationwide.”

Woodall touched on another huge concern of cattlemen, immigrant labor. “We in the cattle business have a workforce that we rely on because they are skilled labor. We do everything we can as an industry to make certain this is a legal work force,” he said.

“We understand sometimes people slip through the process. We don’t want to see our work force deported, so we are very supportive of his efforts to have border security. But we want assurance this will be a legal work force available for all segments of our industry.”

Woodall noted cattle feeding is moving back to the upper Midwest, primarily because of large supplies of dependable feedstocks. New technologies such as hoop barns are providing cattle comfort even better than the open feedlots of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

According to Colin Woodall, vice president of government affairs for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the hottest issue right now is the Trump administration.

“Lots of uncertainty, even though much of what we have heard so far is enlightening and optimistic for our cattle industry,” he said.

Interviewed at the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association annual meeting on Dec. 3, Woodall indicated the next secretary of agriculture, the next head of the Environmental Protection Agency, the next face at the Department of Interior are announcements likely to influence priorities of this new administration. “(Trump) has already made it clear he wants to roll back the burdensome regulations of federal government,” said Woodall, “especially the EPA’s Waters of the United States rules. His business mind and understanding that regulations stifle business I think will be very beneficial to us in the livestock industry.”

Woodall said he believes Trump will be a strong advocate for rolling back proposals dealing with state estate tax planning provisions which are available to cattle producers. He also suggested changes in fed-

USDA announces organic cost share program Organic producers and handlers will have improved access to organic certification cost share assistance starting in spring of 2017. By moving the program from the Agricultural Marketing Service to the Farm Service Agency, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has expanded the means by which interested producers can apply. FSA has over 2,100 offices nationwide where applicants can apply, ask questions, or get more information.

Access to the National Organic Certification Cost Share Program and the Agricultural Management Assistance Organic Certification Cost Share Program will be available in nearly every rural county nationwide.

Applicants will also have the option to apply via mail. State departments of agriculture will retain the option of offering the program, and in states where they do so, organic certification cost share will be available through the

state agency as well as all county FSA offices.

According to USDA, currently only half of the nation’s organic operations participate in the certification cost share program. By expanding its access and outreach in this manner, USDA will be able to reach many growers and producers who may have never connected with the agency in the past.

“USDA’s organic certification cost share program makes it more affordable for organic producers and handlers across the country to get certified, allowing them to tap into new and expanding markets to meet growing consumer demand” said Alyssa Charney, policy specialist. “By expanding the options for application, USDA is providing farmers, ranchers, and handlers with a convenient new option, increasing access to these funds through the 2,100 FSA county offices across the country. In order to ensure that produc-

ers and handlers have as many options to participate in the cost share as possible as possible, we also strongly urge state departments agriculture to continue to offer the program.”

FSA will accept applications from states for funds for cost-share assistance between Jan. 3 and Feb. 17.

Woodall said government regulations on the environment, production technologies, even the use of veterinary drugs (especially antibiotics) continue to irritate and add cost to U.S. cattle producers.

In addition, the Jan. 25 keynote panel on the economic impact of mergers in agriculture is an important topic. In 2016, DuPont proposed merging with Dow Chemical; Bayer AG with Monsanto; and ChemChina with Syngenta. These mergers are expected to close this year.

“Mergers – how’s that going to affect our bottom line? Are we going to have choices taken away or with the mergers will there be more opportunity?” asked Gillie.

The relationship between the final 2016 county yield and the 2016 county benchmark yields is extremely important in calculating potential 2016 ARC-CO payments. Expressing the 2016 county yield as a percentage of benchmark yield is more important than the final county yield in determining estimated ARC-CO payments.

The NASS county yields will offer a good estimate of where final 2016 ARC-CO payments are likely to end up, depending on the final 2016 market year average price level, which will be finalized on Sept. 30. The NASS yield estimates may be adjusted slightly by the USDA, based on 2016 planted aces, to arrive at the final 2016 County FSA yields, which are used to calculate the 2016 ARC-CO payments.

ARC-CO payments likely to vary county to county MARKETING There likely will be a significant difference in estimated payments from county to county, depending on the final 2016 county yield.

Based on the current 2016 soybean market year average price estimate, and the fact that most areas of the Upper Midwest had above-average soybean yields in 2016, it is not likely that very many counties will receive a 2016 soybean ARC-CO payment.

The U.S. swine industry is under constant threat of foreign animal disease entry. In 2013, the introduction of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus to the U.S. exposed limitations in prevention. While the source of PEDv has not been determined, analysis of the original PEDv strain suggests the virus may have originated from China and feed or feed ingredients may have served as vehicles for virus entry. The risk of feed as vehicles for pathogen entry has risen. To evaluate this risk, a model has been devloped to study whether imported ingredients could remain viable under the time and conditionsduring a trans-Pacific shipment from Asia to the U.S. This presentation will summarize the survival of PEDv in feed ingredients.

Grain Outlook Corn Market pushes upward The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Jan. 6.

CORN — Welcome to 2017! We wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous year! The corn market pushed upward out of its holiday consolidation mode when traders returned from their New Year’s celebration. Corn closed higher for five consecutive sessions to its highest level since mid-December. Weather in Argentina and Brazil was a big influence, as was fund short covering ahead of index rebalancing. It has been estimated that funds will need to buy between 60,000 and 100,000 corn contracts in their rebalancing of PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. funds. After setting a fresh 14St. Paul year high when trading resumed, the U.S. dollar then lost steam and fell to levels not seen since the middle of December. The weaker dollar lent support to commodities in general. China’s yuan in the same time frame rallied over 2 percent.

Jan. 12 will bring us significant reports which include the monthly supply/demand balance sheets, the final production number for the 2016 crop, and Grain Stocks as of Dec. 1. Winter wheat seedings will also be reported.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange pegged Argentina’s corn planting at 83 percent complete vs.

It would appear that the livestock markets are starting the year on a defensive note. Both the cattle and the hog markets seem to be exhausting their recent rallies as both are running into resistance at these higher prices.

As far as cattle are concerned, the demand for beef at higher prices still appears to be the culprit that halts the rally in prices.

No doubt that live inventories are on the tight side, but the fact that competitive meats are still a better value to the consumer at the retail level. That would lead one to the conclusion that until there is parity between beef and the JOE TEALE other meats, the rallies in live Broker prices may be limited. Because of the current market conditions, producers should be very aware of those conditions and protect inventories if needed.

Corn prices (before basis) ranged from $3.11 to $4.36, which equates to cash prices about $2.60 to $4.00. Soybean prices (before basis) ranged from $8.62 to $11.82, which equates to cash prices about $7.90 to $11.10. It’s no secret the grain markets are volatile. Soybeans hold South American weather risk premium NYSTROM, from pg. 25 culture’s last outlook at 36.5 mmt. Brazil’s corn production estimate is holding its own from 86.5 to 87 mmt. The average trade estimate for Brazil’s corn is 87.1 mmt vs. USDA’s December 86.5 mmt forecast; for Argentina, the trade guess is 36.1 mmt compared to USDA’s December forecast of 36.5 mmt.

Weekly export sales were a disappointment and marketing year low. They came in below estimates at just 16.9 million bushels. It did keep our pace 75 percent ahead of last year on total commitments, but we need 25.5 million bushels of sales per week to hit the USDA 2.225 billion bushel forecast. Total commitments of 1.4 billion bushels represents over 63 percent of the sales projection. Weekly export inspections (what actually gets shipped) were 636,700 metric tons and the lowest in six weeks.

There may be some concern developing over Mexico’s devaluation of the peso. As their peso devalues, it makes it more expensive to purchase U.S. commodities. The peso has fallen by 50 percent in two years. They are the leading buyer of U.S. corn.

Weekly ethanol production hit a new all-time record high at 1.043 million barrels per day, up from 1.028 million bpd in the previous week. The old record was 1.040 million bpd. Ethanol stocks were unchanged at 784 million gallons, the lowest for this time of year in the last three years. While some may expect the ethanol usage category to rise on next week’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, others advise caution. There were rumors of China possibly raising its ethanol import tariff from 5 percent to 30 percent, depending on how the new U.S. administration and China get along. The November Grain Crushings report indicated 451.9 million bushels of corn were used for ethanol production. The conversion rate was 2.80 gallons per bushel. Ethanol crush margins have fallen from 59 cents three weeks ago to just 8 cents per gallon as of Jan. 5.

Outlook: For the week, March corn was 6 cents higher at $3.58, July up 7.25 cents at $3.71.5 and December corn rallied 5.5 cents to $3.85.5 per bushel. Resistance in the March contract sits at $3.64.75 per bushel, the high in December. Support in the March contract continues at $3.41.75 per bushel. December corn may see first support at $3.82, then closer to $3.75 per bushel; resistance is in the low $3.90s.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans rang in the New Year with new lows for the move before posting a sharp key reversal higher on the second trading day of the year. The weekly range in March soybeans was from $9.92.75 to $10.16 per bushel. The market is willing to keep a South American weather risk premium in the market even though our sales have slowed. The looming government reports also cast a shadow over what may be reported on Jan. 12, likely limiting upside prospects.

The trade is concerned about both flooding and dryness in Argentina, and dryness in northeastern Brazil. The dry area of Brazil is considered minimal, but perception is reality in the commodity world.

Yield reports in Brazil suggest early soybeans are running 12 percent above normal. Later soybeans are expected to be better. The soybean ship line-up in Brazil is beginning to build, estimated at 1.6 mmt and similar to last year. Some expect their January exports to be three to four times last year, with a smaller corn line-up freeing up capacity. The average trade estimate for Brazil’s soybean crop is 102.4 mmt. The December USDA number was 102 mmt.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange cut its soybean acre estimate for Argentina from 19.6 million hectares to 19.3 million hectares. BAGE cited dryness in the southeast portion of Buenos Aires behind the decline. Soybean planting is pegged at 93 percent complete, roughly 9 percent behind last year. While Jan. 10 is nothing official, Argentine growers shy away from planting soybeans in the southern regions beyond that date due to concerns over the

An example of a different approach would be thinking about selling crops at a profit, which isn’t always the highest price. This means, producers know their margins and don’t just try to guess the high of the marketing year. Here are a few examples of resources we can use to develop a grain marketing plan. Remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Write it down — determine your end goals. Consider both time and price, and then document them.

For example, if 2017 soybean cash prices hit $9.00, I’ll sell 20 percent of my expected production. If prices reach $9.25, get another 10 percent sold for a total of 30 percent.

Start marketing your crop before harvest — take advantage of pricing opportunities over a longer period of time. Have a marketing plan for your crop 12 months before its harvested. Look at

crop being susceptible to frost. The average trade estimate for Argentina’s soybean production is 56.1 mmt. The USDA in December was 57 mmt.

Argentina will reduce its soybean export taxes to 18 percent by 2020. The tax is scheduled to fall by 0.5 percent each month in 2018 and 2019. The tax this year will remain at 30 percent.

Weekly export sales were a horrible marketing year low at a measly 3.2 million bushels! We haven’t seen a daily announcement for corn or soybean sales since before Christmas. Cancellations to unknown were huge and most surmise those sales would have eventually have been to China. We dropped down to just 26 percent ahead of last year’s sales and we need 9.5 million bushels of sales to achieve the 2.050 billion bushel USDA export objective. Total sales commitments of 1.76 billion bushels represents 86 percent of the export target. Export inspections were 1.6 mmt this week, which is the 14th consecutive week they have been over 1 mmt. However, they are down 50 percent from their peak nearly two months ago. The November USDA Crush report released early in the week showed 170.7 million soybeans were crushed, which was in-line with the 171 million bushel trade estimate. Soyoil stocks at 1.777 billion pounds were slightly higher than the pre-report 1.763 billion pound projection.

Outlook: March soybeans first support is $9.83.75 with resistance at $10.07.5, then $10.16 per bushel.

November soybeans first support is $9.78, then down to $9.50 per bushel; resistance is seen from $10.00 to $10.02.5 per bushel. The positive export demand that we’ve been seeing was slashed this week with very weak net export sales numbers. Is this the beginning of the switch from the United States to South America? The Jan. 12 WASDE report and Grain Stocks as of Dec. 1 will give us some clarity for our next move. ❖

Hog exports rocky TEALE, from pg. 25 packer aggressiveness in acquiring live inventory as we moved into the new year. The pork cutout has found some resistance above the $80.00 level in recent days which has resulted in slower movement of pork products. With the futures market carrying a fairly decent premium to cash, the futures have also seen some weakness develop especially in the nearby contracts.

There seems to be some optimism developing toward the hog market as the addition of more slaughter capacity is being developed. However, the demand for pork will have to also increase to provide a strong bullish condition. With the current strong U.S. dollar, the export market is questionable regarding expansion. The latest USDA Hogs and Pigs Report suggest that the hog herd is continuing to expand. Therefore, until demand grows from current levels, the possibility of any significant price appreciation for the live inventories seems remote at the current time. The family also operates a seed stock enterprise. Brunner is a Kansas State University graduate in animal science with a master’s in agribusiness. USDA also reported a 17,000-head increase in the U.S. milking herd from 2015 to 9.339 million, which was also up 4,000 from October’s figure.

“Productivity in the milking herd also rose with an above-trend 2.2 percent increase in milk production per cow during November.

“Feed costs have held relatively steady. The market is looking to the January WASDE report, which will include Quarterly Grain Stocks, as well as developing South American weather for further direction,” the Margin Watch stated.

Speaking to feed prices, Penn State’s James Dunn’s latest Dairy Outlook reports that “Corn and soybean meal prices are essentially the same as last month, with the corn price down 0.4 percent and soybean meal price down 1.7 percent. The South American corn and soybean crops will have record yields and production. U.S. exports of corn and beans are large despite the strong dollar. Income over Feed Costs, Penn State’s measure of income over feed costs, rose by 5 percent in December from November on higher milk prices and lower cost feed.”

“December’s income over feed cost is $1.01 higher than November and the highest value of 2016.

Income over feed cost reflects daily gross milk income less feed costs for an average cow producing 65 pounds of milk per day. The milk margin is the estimated amount of the Pennsylvania all milk price that remains after the feed costs per hundredweight of milk production are paid. Like income over feed cost, this measure shows that the December PA milk margin was 5 percent higher than in November. The Pennsylvania drought continues, with much of the state and the region still abnormally dry,” according to Dunn.

Meanwhile, USDA’s latest National Milk Cost of Production report shows November’s total milk production costs were down from the previous month and a year ago.

Total feed costs averaged $10.49/cwt, down 15 cents from September, down 15 cents from October, and 68 cents below November 2015. Purchased feed costs, at $5.86/cwt, were down 15 cents from September, down 6 cents from October, and 14 cents below November 2015.

Total costs, including feed, bedding, marketing, fuel, repairs, hired labor, taxes, etc., at $22.41/cwt, were down 12 cents from September, down 21 cents from October, and 75 cents below a year ago. Feed costs made up 47.0 percent of total costs in November, virtually unchanged from the month before but down from 48.2 percent a year ago.

Roerick: We do, but we much appreciate a heads-up so we know you are coming and can work our schedules with your visit. It’s just my brother and father; plus we do a broiler barn so amongst the three of us, sometimes we get stretched a bit.

Q: Is the wow reaction typical of first-time visitors?

Roerick: Yes, that single word still sums up most visitors’ comments. They’re not tuned in to the fact that robots have been on the milking scene for 12-15 years now in America and even longer in Europe. And systems keep getting better. We’re hardly touching these cows anymore. Sure, we’re still handling our cows during calving and any other maintenance requirements.

Q: And is it only logical that robotic milking will continue to expand within the dairy industry?

Roerick: I know it’s still a small percentage of us that have gone the robotic route. But sustainability of our industry is dependent on increased efficiencies at all fronts. For instance, with better time management capabilities, we were better able to harvest our forages at peak times when they need to be. So a more nutritious forage program we think is an added benefit.

Q: Do you age-group your cows to better fit robotic milking?

Q: How did you long-term plan your system?

Roerick: Based on evidence within the industry and visits with area dairy farmers, some major upgrades might be necessary 10 to 12 years down the road.

We look at the Robotic system about like our milking parlor, which after 10 to 12 years also needed some major upgrades. When things are constantly being used, constant wear is inevitable.

Q: Labor savings was high on your criteria. How about milk production?

Roerick: Because of improved overall health of our cows, reproduction issues lessened and milk production jumped significantly. We went to 3x milking and production jumped 10 to 12 pounds per cow average. We were expecting a 6 to 8-pound increase, so we picked up some bonus pounds. That made the transition easier because we quickly could see the results. We just cracked 30,000-pound herd average last month and we’re hoping to see even more increase. A large percentage of our cows are now doing over 100 pounds per day.

Q: With significantly higher production, might this impact the longevity of your cows?

Roerick: We are seeing cows stick around longer. Granted we’ve only been into this about a year. But we’ve noticed that cows with reproductive issues seem to clean up sooner and come back into heat much sooner. So we’re making an assumption one or two more gestations per animal could result.

Q: You’ve even planned for future expansion?

Roerick: We designed this barn with the idea that we could build an identical barn to the south and utilize the same milk house and manure pit. We anticipate this could be happening seven to 10 years ahead. My father, who is in his mid-50s, said he probably wouldn’t be part of that next expansion. But now that he’s seeing the efficiencies and lesser issues with our robotic units, he’s actually saying, ‘Yes, I’ll probably be part of that next generation of expansion too.’

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Craig Roerick, with his dad, Roger, and brother, Stephen, operate a 210-cow family dairy, Roerview Dairy, near Upsala. At 32 years old, Craig Roerick has been a board member of Minnesota Milk Producers Association for the last three years.

“We are extremely fortunate that our families have this chance to dairy farm. Roerview Dairy has come through a lot over the last 30 years and it all has to do with our parents’ dedication to us and the dairy industry.” said Roerick. “It has laid the groundwork for Stephen and me to continue excelling our families and business into the future for the next generation.”

Roerick discussed why they upgraded to a robotic milking system and how well it’s working out.

Q: You’re now about one year into robotics. What tripped your trigger?

Roerick: It boiled down to the basic fact that our family farm needed some improvements. We weren’t sure about how to go about this process. So we took about three years to work out a planning process. We could see the big push for us was labor. We didn’t feel we were strong enough to be people managers.

Robotics let us sidestep that issue and it’s been a really good fit for us.

Q: You indicate that at any given time about 180 cows are in the milking lineup?

Roerick: That number told us three robotics units would be sufficient. We did some shopping. We knew of two systems in our area that were well supported. Being newcomers, we felt the Lely system had some advantage, so that’s the route we went.

Q: Who adjusted most quickly to this new system, your cows or you?

Roerick: No question on that one.

The cows adjusted very quickly. Just a few days and they were OK. But we had to learn lots of computer technology. Plus, how to comfortably move cows into the units. Once we got OK with the technology, we could identify issues more quickly. But for certain we had a three to four-week learning curve.

Q: Does that include the milking sequence and the milking frequency of each cow?

Roerick: Cows do some of that frequency scheduling on their own. If a cow is aggressive in getting into the

Global economy picking up for dairy producers

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Jim Dickrell, currently editor of Dairy Herd Management, has seen many ups and downs in the U.S. dairy industry.

Dickrell, of Monticello, has spent 40 years observing dairying and he’s much aware of the current profit Jim Dickrell squeeze. But he’s also encouraged.

“I’m fairly optimistic for 2017,” Dickrell said. “Prices won’t get to those 2014 levels when we saw $22-$25 mail box prices. But I see $18 prices by summer, 2017.

Feed prices are lower, which also helps margins.”

without processing capacity to absorb this additional production, it’s a moot point at this time,” he said.

Dickrell mentions biggies like Land O’Lakes, DFA, Agropur and even some smaller processors are looking at opportunities. But it’s a big deal to build a new processing facility, upwards of a billion dollars.

Dickrell said localized financial assistance, such as tax incremental financing packages, would most likely fund these projects, rather than any federal programs. “But the fundamental economics have to work before this happens,” he said.

Break-evens for Minnesota dairy farmers are currently in the $16 to $16.50 category, according to Dickrell. “A lot of our guys grow their own feed so these break-evens are contingent on other input costs such as seed, fuel, fertilizer and of course land rental rates. Some current projections I’m seeing are a $4 corn price, but 2017 projections don’t hold much hope for that either,” he said.

Dickrell couldn’t predict if 3,000 to 5,000-cow mega dairies would keep happening.

“I don’t know the future of these dairies because it takes such a large land base to support a dairy that size, both for feed and manure applications. Yes, we already have some excellent mega dairies that are winwin situations with neighboring farmers who provide forages in exchange for manure privileges,” he said.

Dickrell thinks older dairy farmers are staying with cows because technologies are making dairy farming an easier enterprise. This is one of the drivers to robotic systems, especially for smaller (200 cows or less) operations. Dairy farmers want to get out of the 24-hour, seven-days-a-week commitment.v

Dickrell notes consumer demand is still very strong, which helps keep a floor on U.S. consumption. And the European Union has slowed production considerably. So too, has New Zealand. And China has started importing product again, so indications are the global market is starting to recover.

Interviewed at the Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference in St. Cloud, Dickrell explained EU slowdown is because of elimination of production quotas on European dairy farmers. That produced a huge surge in production and milk prices collapsed.

“So they’ve instituted their own diversion program for the first quarter of 2017 to slow things down,” said Dickrell.

But the spoiler is Russia, which is out of the market. U.S. embargoes were imposed because of Russia’s actions in the Ukraine. “If Russia were back into buying our dairy products, that could be a substantial boost. But I don’t hold much hope of that changing next year,” said Dickrell.

Dickrell added robotics are moving into the U.S. dairy industry. “We’re seeing more robotic systems,” he said, “but it hasn’t been a rapid expansion because of their high cost. But growth is continuing, especially if labor issues persist.”

Cow numbers are static in Minnesota despite increases in surrounding states. A big reason is that Minnesota does not have the processing capacity to expand, explained Dickrell.

“There are a number of Minnesota dairies that would like to grow, especially in that I-29 corridor of western Minnesota and eastern South Dakota. I’m told there are 20,000 cows ready to come into Minnesota. But

Social groups perhaps are even enhanced. With our former parlor system, every cow came into the ready area. Now they somewhat choose when they want to be in that milking lineup.

Q: Could you share costs of going this route?

Roerick: The number we tell most people for the robotic systems is about $275,000; but that also includes the square footage required in the robot room, plumbing, and electrical. As for the total dollar

amount per cow, that number is all over the board for every producer. We did utilize livestock investment grants from the Minnesota Department of Ag along with NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) cost share for the manure storage system to help keep our overall cost down.

Q: With a projected $15 milk price, when will you see black ink?

Roerick: It would take some time. Knowing our numbers, this project likely would have not gone with what our lenders were allowing us to budget for a milk increase above and beyond our old system. With milk production we are seeing for the last five months, we could weather a storm for a while. But there wouldn’t be much left over to replace worn equipment or other small upgrades. However, with a $17 base price and our current production and cost of production, we feel we would sit very comfortable to make changes where needed to strengthen the business for the next downturn in the market.

he steam locomotive at Locomotive Park in Mountain Iron, Minn., is an example of both American business and engineering brilliance and folly. O.I.M. Company No. 806 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works of Eddystone, Pa., in 1910 and put to work on the Mesabi Iron Range. At that time Baldwin was the world’s largest and most influential manufacturer of steam railroad locomotive engines.

During its 45 years of service, No. 806, a relatively small engine known as a Class S-4 Switcher, served in the Proctor train yards, was employed on the ore docks at Lake Superior and worked in various open pit mines across the Range. It was a little work horse and, for its time, an engineering marvel. With a tender full of coal and water attached, it weighed 254,000 pounds and was 63 feet and 2 inches long. It had a cylinder bore of nearly 2 feet in diameter and a stroke of over 2 feet.

In 1955, No. 806 was retired from service.

At the time it was hauling iron ore out of the Mountain Iron open pit near the town.

Mountain Iron, now known as the Taconite Capitol of the World, wasn’t standing still.

Within a few years, as high grade iron ore was depleted, the new taconite processing technology was adapted there and across the Mesabi Iron Range.

Meanwhile, the locomotive giant Baldwin was standing still. Company executives refused to accept that diesel locomotives would replace steam. As a result, business declined and the company closed its doors in 1972 after having produced more than 70,000 steam locomotives.

Engine No. 806 could pull around 20 tons; less than 20 percent of its weight. That wasn’t good enough in the new age of taconite! Nowadays, at Mountain Iron’s gigantic Minntac mine, electric shovels pick up 85 tons of taconite ore in one scoop and load it onto trucks that haul 240 tons of ore.

Monster trucks and electric shovels do the heavy

lifting at the bottom of today’s mines. But if you visit No. 806 at Locomotive Park you can stand in the sheltered overlook of an abandoned granite quarry and listen to the clang and toot of modern diesel electric locomotives as they haul taconite from the processing plant. And, if you wish, you can climb aboard the cab of No. 806 and imagine you are the train engineer you wanted to be when you were a kid. v
