Starting in November, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will accept and process applications for enrollment in the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP). Applications will be made available in local service centers.

NRCS has made several updates to the program to help producers better evaluate their conservation options and the benefits to their operations and natural resources. New methods and software for evaluating applications will help producers see up front why they are or are not meeting stewardship thresholds, and allow them to pick practices and enhancements that work for their conservation objectives.

These new tools also allow producers to see potential payment scenarios for conservation early in the process.

NRCS offices began processing applications for the program on Nov. 14, with sign-up running through Feb. 3, 2017. People interested in CSP can visit www.nrcs.usda.gov/csp for more information. This one-stop shop,

In fact, it’s quite likely we elected more than a few crooks, cheaters, and knuckleheads this election day. We usually do. These folks, however, come and go.

CSP applications available

The ugly emptiness of the 2016 election might have been a bad dream; but, by comparison, 1968 was a bloody nightmare.

My father, a thoughtful, informed voter for almost 70 years, backed Richard Nixon in 1968 because Nixon had promised to raise milk price supports — a key ingredient in our farm’s main enterprise. “You have to vote for a man who understands farming,” offered my father.

Nixon kept his word. He increased milk price supports before announcing his reelection bid in 1972. Shortly thereafter, Watergate investigators discovered he had done so only after pocketing at least $1 million in unreported campaign cash from the dairy lobby.

My father never commented on Nixon’s criminal deeds or the dairy lobby’s dirty schemes. I suspect, however, that their corruption deeply offended him because he was a rules person. Rules, like fences, mattered. To him, breaking the rules to win wasn’t winning. It was, in fact, losing because it meant you had first lost your dignity, then your honor.

Oh the trials of a grain cart operator This harvest season, when we found ourselves a little short of help, my husband approached me to see if I would drive the grain cart, which I had never done before.

I agreed to the job, thinking, “How hard can it be?” After all, our sons earned the job when they were in the fourth grade.

By Karen Schwaller once only a few harvest seasons ago. And the only other time I remember her driving a tractor was when she told Mom to go to (you know where) under her breath once.

She wasn’t counting on Mom hearing her, of course, so Mom sent my sister out to Dad, who made her drag the yard with the old Ford tractor in exchange for her ill-timed and louder-than-planned commentary and analysis.

Other years, I have ridden with the guys during harvest and have always been graciously thankful that I was not the one responsible for keeping the tractor just inches from the bean head as they rolled together through the field. And yet, I thought that if our fourth grade sons could pick up on it, I should be able to do it too.

The first day I packed up all the necessities: my lunch, some toilet paper (though I have to say I’m a little afraid to use it out there, with all the satellites and drones, I’m afraid I’ll end up on YouTube); and my sports bra to keep everything in place during those hurried trips back to the combine after a load dump.

A few lessons on speed, and how many rows to be over, and I was flying solo in no time. I thought it was a pretty good gig and wondered why no one ever wants that job.

The learning curve appeared when we got into a wet hole and the tractor became bogged down. As we worked briefly to free ourselves from the quagmire, someone asked me, “Is your differential on?”

My eyes were spinning like those of long-ago cartoon characters that had just been coldcocked. I

One of the corn fields we got into was hilly. And I mean hilly.

I went over the first big hill with the tractor and grain cart and felt like I was scaling the first climb of a roller coaster. The sign at the top of the coaster at Arnolds Park says, “The Point of No Return.” I saw that sign in my mind as I neared the summit and prayed there was land on the other side. I felt a little like the great explorers must have felt — Christopher Columbus and Yukon Cornelius.

It felt like we were gleaning the Matterhorn, and I thought that if I heard yodeling or spotted the Von Trapp family over the next hill, I was going to need some of that paper on a roll that I referred to earlier.

My husband asked me to top off a truck one day, which I did. I overloaded it by 8,000 pounds according to the scale at the elevator. I guess farm wives can add elevator scales to the list of scales that rat us out and laugh at us secretly.

A high school guy working for us said incredulously, “That’s impressive.”

My husband had another word for it.

The good news is that after my experience this fall, I won’t have to do toning exercises on my left thigh for months after all that standing on the clutch while loading the trucks.

Fourth grade was a long time ago. Imagine how sleek my thighs would be by now.

Ninety miles a minute. Isn’t that how fast your dog’s nose moves, inside or outside, when she smells something interesting? There’s a reason why, “Being a Dog” explains.

For sure, author Alexandra Horowitz goes farther than most authors would, to suss out what we’re missing by not being dogs. Her experiments spark both imagination and nose-wrinkling disgust. Definitely, she makes a reader envy the pooch’s proboscis that finds, identifies, and savors a richer world and scents that, sadly, we’ll never notice.

But can we teach ourselves to at least get up to snuff with our sniffler? Maybe; reading about the lengths to which Horowitz goes to find out is funny and icky-truthful. That, plus its wealth of information, makes this book a delight for dog lovers and anyone who enjoys the smell of breakfast, crayons, rich earth, fresh-baked cookies, and yes, even dogs.

Behold your pup’s little black nose. Admire the leathery scales, the wet softness, the curve of it — and then read on for a full appreciation. “Being a Dog” is one great book to sniff out.

Something happened overnight and your dog’s nose was on overload. He made you stop here, linger there, pause here. What was he sniffing?

Certainly things unsavory, surely things you don’t want to THE BOOKWORM know about and, as you’ll see SEZ in “Being a Dog” by Alexandra Horowitz, a whole lot more.

It’s a kind of bonding when their eyes meet hers, she says, but eyes are not the only way a dog “sees.”

Much of what a dog knows filters through the little black button at the end of his snout.

It’s common knowledge that a dog’s nose catches scents better than does a measly human schnoz.

Your dog can smell a storm coming from miles away.

Properly trained, he could find bugs, drugs, explosives, dead bodies, missing people and diseases. Your dog knows how you feel just by how you smell. He knows where you’ve been and what you ate while you were there. And for him, the walk you had this morning was different than the one you had yesterday — even if you followed the exact same route.

So what are we missing?

Horowitz wondered too, so she started sniffing high (where smells invisibly waft like clouds) and low (where scents tend to settle). She learned that all humans once knew how to use smell to find their way home, detect disease, and identify friends; and that it’s still possible to utilize full snoot capacity.

Horowitz volunteered to identify smells to see how well she’d do. She talked with perfume and wine experts, visited training centers that teach puppies to find things that are hidden and possibly dangerous, and she learned how much we miss when we aren’t heeding the air we breathe.

And the part that really stinks? Says Horowitz,

Gardener practices seed saving

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent MINNEAPOLIS — Jim Tjepkema, formerly of Clarks Grove, Minn., saves seeds from about 80 different vegetables.

“I only raise 25 to 30 each year,“ Tjepkema, who now lives and gardens in South Minneapolis, said.

Tjepkema, who is a member of the Iowa-based Seed Savers Exchange, said the secret to raising only about one-third of his vegetable varieties each gardening season can be found in good seed care and storage.

“I’ve had tomato seeds that I’ve kept for maybe six years and then grown them and the seed was fine,” he said.

For years, Tjepkema has been saving the seeds of a number of tomato varieties, including three that he found in Minnesota.

“The three that I collected in Minnesota are Anton, Jake's, and Milka,” he said. “Jake's is a tomato my uncle Jake saved that came from a neighbor of his. Anton came from a man who lived in a rural home near Twin Lakes, Minn. Milka is a Serbian variety from a woman named Milka who came here from Serbia.”

Tjepkema describes Jake’s tomato as a very large pink beefsteak-type tomato that matures in 75 to 85 days. It grows large vines with big potato-leafshaped leaves. Jake, who raised it in the various gardens where he lived, got it to mature as far north as Grand Rapids, Minn. Jake told Tjepkema that the seed came to the United States with German immigrants.

Whether he’s planning to save seed from Milka, Anton, or Jake’s tomatoes in a particular season, Tjepkema’s strategy is the same.

“What I do is inventory my seed collection and check on the last time that I raised them,” he said. “I put the ones that haven’t been raised recently on a list of the ones to grow.”

This year he grew Milka.

“I like to plant as many plants as I can, but tomatoes take a lot of space,” Tjepkema said. “But I plant at least three plants. You can have crossing of tomatoes and planting more than one of each kind increases my chance of seeing it if that occurs.”

At harvest time, Tjepkema picked four nice ripe tomatoes for seed. He says it’s best to collect seeds from more than one fruit.

Saving tomato seeds from year to year can be as simple as squeezing the juice and seeds out, separating the seeds from the pulp, and then drying them on paper. But if you want to save the seeds for years without planting them, like Tjepkema does, you may have better luck with a more involved system.

“Some seed savers let tomatoes ferment in their own juice for a while,” Tjepkema said. “They have a gelatinous coat around them and fermentation dissolves that. You can squeeze out the pulp and seeds into a container and let it sit for three or four days until they get good and rotten. Then just screen out the seeds and throw away the pulp.”

Jim Tjepkema is a metro gardener who raises vegetables from seeds he has saved and stored in the winter.

He admits that fermenting tomatoes are stinky, so he advises doing it in a place where the smell won’t bother family members.

“Set it outside with an insect barrier cloth so it doesn’t get fruit flies. There will be a layer of white foam on the top of the liquid. It will take about four days,” he said. “If you wait longer the seeds may sprout.”

The tomato seeds will sink to the bottom of the fermented juice.

“Carefully pour some of the juice off and then add some water,” Tjepkema said. “Add and pour off water several times to rinse them. For a final rinse, put them in a kitchen strainer. To dry them, I get as much of the water as I can off them in the strainer and then I spread them out on a paper plate. They will dry out on that within a day.”

Since Tjepkema wants his seeds to last as long as possible, he takes extra precautions to keep tomato and other seeds dry. He uses a system established by Jeff McCormack, who is founder of Southern Exposure Seeds and a founding member of the Seed Savers Exchange board of directors. He uses silica gel, the stuff that’s found in many jars of vitamin supplements, to get the last tiny bit of moisture from his seeds.

He acknowledges that his seed saving method may be more elaborate than most backyard gardeners care to do.

“You could just put dry seeds in a canning jar and screw the lid down tight,” he said.

Tjepkema advises using a canning jar of a size that is just adequate to contain your seeds. Small quantities of seed in large jars can take on moisture from the air in the jar, he said.

Seed savers socialize, trade seeds, learn from each other said. “One guy had one and he said the neighbor that he got it from was German so he called the variety German.

It sounded nice so I tried it. It turned out really nice. A lettuce specialist that I know said that it was one of the best lettuces around.”

He also enjoys the social interaction with other seed savers.

“I’ve learned an awful lot talking to other seed savers and gardeners,” he said. “A lot of knowledge about seed saving and gardening isn’t in books.

It’s in peoples heads.”

“I just love saving all kinds of seeds,” he said. “Whenever I run across one that is of interest I add it to my collection; although I’m just about done with adding to my collection. I can’t maintain any more varieties.”

Exchanging seed An important and pleasurable part of seed saving is exchanging the seeds with other people. Some of that pleasure is in the knowledge that you are part of an effort to keep a particular vegetable variety in existence even if commercial seed companies don’t recognize its commercial value.

“It’s OK that there are parallel streams of agriculture. We need to accept that people are going to choose to farm in different ways or choose to buy different food,” Ehrhardt said.

are using those tools and we want to continue to serve our customers; some have been buying seed from us for three generations.

“This isn’t a value judgement. We aren’t saying GMO seeds are bad,” explained Ehrhardt.

A broad range of GMO varieties will be available from NorthStar Genetics, an independent farm seed company based in Minnesota. The seeds will just be in a different bag. As always, Albert Lea Seed will be offering trait and genetic combinations for Minnesota

In the seed plant, workers clean and bag soybean, oats, wheat, barley, hairy vetch, winter rye, peas, buckwheat and triticale. To clean the seeds, they use an ancient process called winnowing that uses blowing air and a screen to sift out impurities.

Producers can purchase seed in tote bags that weigh a ton and pro boxes that hold 40-50 bushels. While some farmers buy in bulk by the semi load, others throw the bags into their pickup truck.

Conventional Seed Since 2010, Viking’s growth in conventional non-GMO corn sales has been 300 percent and more than 75 percent of its corn sales in 2016 were either conventional non-GMO or organic.

“It’s hard to make a living farming right now. Farmers are looking for ways to cut costs. Conventional corn is less expensive and it’s another way for them to reduce input costs,” said Ehrhardt.

Ehrhardt understands that farmers are business people who will look at each system — GMO and conventional — and do the math to see which is better for their bottom line. Even though pesticide applications may be necessary, many farmers find they can make more money growing conventional seed.

By simplifying its Viking brand, Albert Lea Seed is focusing on what they know best which is developing, testing and supplying non-traited and organic seed. Viking seed is sold throughout the Upper Midwest.

This family business was founded by Lou Ehrhardt in 1923 to sell field seed, gardening and farm supplies. The family is still doing that today. Grandson Tom and Mac Ehrhardt run the business. Mac Ehrhardt’s father, George, created the Viking brand in the 1970s.

Albert Lea Seed will continue to sell GMO seed, such as Roundup Ready, as a distributor for NorthStar Genetics.

Resistance increases use of conventional seed corn VIKING, from pg. 11A near Lamberton, has bought Viking seed since 1999. For a year or two, Iverson used Bt-corn, but since then he’s used all conventional corn.

“We’ve kind of felt like it’s done better in our personal trials — stands better and more top-end. The price is also a big factor,” said Iverson.

Producers are contracted to grow conventional soybean seed and small grains, but the conventional corn is purchased from other companies that specialize in growing corn seed. For instance, Anderson Seed in St. Peter is one of its major suppliers.

Viking’s seed corn comes in three non-GMO purity levels. The first level is Non-GMO seed corn which means that it may have a trace of genetic engineering such as GMO pollen that drifted from another field. The second level is Pure Non-GMO seed corn which is 99 percent free of GMOs and Ultra Pure Non-GMO, which is 99.9 percent free of GMOs. Ehrhardt explained that for the vast majority of farmers, the first level of purity is sufficient. These hybrids tend to offer good yields, stands and resistance to Northern corn leaf blight. Most of this corn

goes to ethanol or feed plants. A few farmers will need higher levels of purity to meet contract terms.

Another issue that led to the rise of conventional seed is that several important weeds are glyphosate resistant. Farmers are asking why they should pay $60 more per bag for a trait when the herbicide doesn’t work as well. The same goes for some rootworm Bt traits so some growers are using Bt corn with an insecticide.

“Mother Nature has figured out a way around those Bt traits,” said Ehrhardt. “Now there are rootworm populations in Minnesota and Iowa that are able to eat corn that contains that Bt trait.”

GMO traits are an excellent tool for farmers when properly used, said Ehrhardt, but the unintended consequence of ethanol has been corn on corn, which has forced the evolution of the rootworm and increased disease issues such as Goss’s wilt.

“Technology when it’s appropriately used can be beneficial for the environment,” Ehrhardt said.

Ehrhardt sees the organic market as a place where Albert Lea Seed can provide real value to customers.

Albert Lea Seed and Viking adhere to a rigorous labeling process and product verification, farm and seed inspections and record-keeping to meet the USDA Organic Certification label requirements. The use of GMOs and synthetic inputs such as pesticides are prohibited. The seed can be traced back to the field where it was produced.

Most of their organic seed growers are in southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin, but they do have growers in Canada and the European Union.

Ray Yokiel, of Wells, is an organic farmer and seed producer who grows organic soybean and oat seed. His dad began growing for Albert Lea Seed in 1956. In 1977, Yokiel began raising seed oats for them. When Yokiel transitioned to organic, the Ehrhardts asked him to raise organic seed oats and then in the 1990s, he began growing organic soybean seed.

“I enjoy doing business with them,” said Yokiel. “They’ve got a lot of integrity.”

Yokiel has also been growing organic corn for years and he explained that getting pure corn seed without GMO contamination has been a challenge.

A fanning mill cleans the seed by using screens to sift out dust, grass and weeds.

“They’ve come up with a plan to grow it in a place where they have as little GMO contamination as possible,” Yokiel said.

Viking’s non-GMO purity levels are available in organic seed corn. “I buy the majority of my seed from them and I want to support them to provide organic farmers with good clean seed,” said Yokiel.

Sales of organic food topped $40 billion in 2015, and foods labeled as nonGMO have gone from $12.9 billion in 2012 to $21.2 billion as of April 2016, according to Nielsen. As a result, some farmers are moving toward organic or non-GMO seed due to premium prices.

Within this organic and non-GMO agriculture field, Albert Lea Seed, a small company that employs 35 people, can compete.

“It’s a market segment that we feel we can help service and take care of and do a good job at it,” said Ehrhardt.

Albert Lea Seed is working with the Practical Farmers of Iowa, University of Minnesota, Iowa State University and grain millers to encourage farmers to add small grains to the corn and soybean rotation. Small grains are proven to reduce pest and disease pressure, lower chemical use, increase yields and improve soil and water quality.

The problem, said Ehrhardt, is economics; Producers can’t make money growing oats and barley. The dynamics need to change and the solution is to make small grains part of animal feed — about 10 percent is all it would take. Sustainability efforts from large companies such as Wal-Mart,

Unilever and Cargill will help make this happen, predicted Ehrhardt.

“You change the landscape in the upper Midwest in a really significant way, such as that it improves water quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reduces pesticide uses, and allows these large companies to meet their sustainability goals,” said Ehrhardt. “Small grains do all those things. It isn’t magic. It’s stuff we’ve known for 150 years,” Practical Farmers of Iowa is in its third year of a pilot program to encourage traditional corn and bean farmers to add oats to their rotation and find ways to use the oats in animal feed.

The highly-contentious 2016 election is now history, and we will now move forward with the new Trump administration, as well with new leadership at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other key federal agencies. There are many major issues that could potentially affect the agriculture industry, which still need to be FARM PROGRAMS addressed and resolved by

By Kent Thiesse Congress and the White House in the next few years.

The leadership of key congressional committees, such as the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, should remain quite similar with the last session of Congress, since both the U.S. House and Senate will continue with a Republican majority.

However, there may be some changes in the membership of the committees.

Following is some perspective on some of the key ag policy issues that could be under consideration during the next session of Congress; or by policy initiatives from the Trump administration: The next Farm Bill — The current Farm Bill expires after the 2018 crop year, so early development of the next Farm Bill is likely to start occurring in Congress and with agricultural leaders during the next year. As usual, the budget allocation toward the next Farm Bill will be a big part of that discussion, with some members of Congress already calling for budget cuts when the next Farm Bill is written.

One of the key ag policy discussions will include whether or not the county revenue-based Ag Risk Coverage (ARC-CO) farm program option should be continued in the next Farm Bill. The ARC-CO program has been difficult for producers to understand, and there have been wide variations in payment levels from county to county for the same crop. Other key Farm Bill considerations will include expanding the Conservation Reserve Program acreage and funding for other conservation programs, restructuring the Dairy Margin Protection Program, and funding for ag research.

Spending on food and nutrition programs accounts for almost three-fourths of the Farm Bill budget, and some members of Congress would like to see major changes in the requirements and budget allocations for these programs in the next Farm Bill. Some members of Congress have also proposed totally separating the food and nutrition programs from the Farm Bill, which was highly controversial in the development of the current Farm Bill.

Crop Insurance — Another segment of the Farm Bill that is likely to come under considerable scrutiny is the Federal Crop Insurance program, with non-agriculture organizations pushing for changes to crop insurance even before the writing of the next Farm Bill. Most of the push is to lower the federal budget for crop insurance expenditures by reducing the premium subsidy, which will increase the farm operators cost of crop insurance. There is also some push to put a cap on insurance payments to individual farmers, which could affect the whole

However, one topic that did get considerable discussion was past and potential future trade agreements. As recently as 2014, exports of agricultural products accounted for approximately one-third of the total value of U.S. ag production, including

39 percent of total ag cash receipts in Minnesota and 37 percent in Iowa.

There are several pending trade agreements that need to be resolved by Congress and the White House, with the biggest of these being the TransPacific Partnership trade agreement with many Asian countries, including Japan. There was also some discussion of re-opening and possibly revising the North American Free Trade Agreement

with Canada and Mexico, as well as in regards to trade agreements with China and other countries, which all could have a major impact on the agriculture industry.

There does not appear to be much momentum to approve the TPP agreement during the “lame-duck” session of Congress late in 2016, even though President Obama strongly supports TPP. Based on comments by Presidentelect Trump, passing TPP in Congress and getting presidential approval in 2017 may also be very difficult, unless some changes are made to the current TPP proposed agreement. The antitrade sentiment that was exhibited during this past election cycle has some agriculture leaders a bit worried, due to the potential financial impact on all segments of the agriculture industry.

Rising health care costs — Rising health care costs are a major concern for farm families and other rural families across the country. Some families have seen health insurance premiums rise 50-100 percent in the past couple of years, with individual farm families and

sole small business owners now paying $30,000 to $40,000 per year or more for health care premiums — if they are even able to find adequate health care coverage. Mandated health insurance premium costs are a major issue in many rural areas of the United States, both from a health care and financial standpoint. President-elect Trump and many members of Congress have pledged to address these issues in 2017.

WOTUS and other environmental issues — Many members of Congress and farm operators have become increasingly concerned with the enhanced environmental regulations that have been administratively enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Many of the proposed regulations could potentially have a direct impact on the future of production agriculture in some areas of the U.S. The current item which is garnering considerable attention is the proposal

Immigration legislation could affect ag production the Midwest. If Congress does not act on immigration reform, it is possible that the new administration could issue some executive orders relative to the issue.

Farm financial stress — Low profitability in both crop and livestock production in the past couple of years has increased financial stress for farm families across the nation, including Minnesota, Iowa, and other Midwestern states. Many ag experts expect this trend to continue into 2017 and 2018.

Some ag leaders are questioning if current farm risk management tools and federal safety net programs are adequate to protect farm operators from financial collapse during these downturn periods. Expect this to be a major point of discussion by ag leaders with the new administration and with congressional leaders in the coming months. The financial health of the production ag sector is also likely to impact discussions and hearings related to a new Farm Bill.

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. PAUL — Most readers of The Land relate to Kent Thiesse as the veteran guy who writes the “Farm Programs” column every month. He is the government farm programs analyst and vice president of MinnStar Bank in Lake Crystal, Minn.

You likely didn’t know that Thiesse is one of the founders of the Minnesota Beef Expo which wrapped up its biggest event ever on Oct 23. The event, now in its 16th year, attracts livestock and beef breeders from a six-state area.

“It’s amazing how the show has grown,” Thiesse said. “This year for example, about 550 youth participated with about 900 head of cattle!

“We’ve kept it mostly a youth-oriented show with a variety of activities

Trump as the next U.S. President, who has very limited political background or connections, adds to the intrigue surrounding some of the key ag policy issues that are likely to be addressed in the next couple of years. However, it is important to remember that President-elect Trump has dealt with many of these same issues in his business ventures for many years, so he does have some working knowledge and background on the issues. It is also important to remember, that a president and the administration have limits on what regulations or policies can be enacted without congressional approval. The leadership in the U.S. House and Senate is not likely to change significantly in 2017, and even though the Republicans have a small majority in both houses of Congress, there is no guarantee that major legislation will be passed easily.

While there is generally considerable support for development of alternative energy sources, Congress and many organizations have become quite divided on the RFS and other mandated energy programs. Ethanol production, which is covered by the RFS, has a major economic impact for farm operators and on the overall rural economy — especially in the Midwest.

Immigration reform — Immigration continues to be a major issue in many portions of the United States and has a lot of political and economic ramifications. Many industries, including the agriculture industry, could be significantly impacted by any major immigration reform legislation. Both production agriculture and the ag processing industry are heavily reliant on an immigrant workforce. Newly added restrictions in getting needed workers into some areas of the United States could greatly affect the rural economy in those locations, including many areas of

Expect the new Trump administration and the next session of Congress to be quite active on the WOTUS issue, as well as on other proposed or recently enacted EPA regulations.

Climate change — The current administration has been involved in discussions and negotiation, both within the United States and with foreign countries, regarding the issue of climate change. Many of the proposed ideas involve implementing measures to reduce the man-induced impacts of a changing climate — several of which ultimately could have a major impact on the agriculture industry. There has been some disagreement among experts as to whether the economic implications for agriculture would be more positive or negative, or would remain neutral.

Congress has been reluctant to take much action relative to climate change, due to uncertainty regarding the scientific evidence, as well as the uncertainty regarding economic implications of the proposed climate change initiatives. It is not totally clear where the Trump administration will stand on climate change initiatives. However, expect any climate change measures to move through Congress in a very cautious

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Nov. 11.

CORN – First the Cubs win the World Series and then the first person to have never held elected office or served in the military is elected president of the United States. The people have spoken. We do live in interesting times. After posting the largest trading range since the Depression on election day, the Dow went on to set a new record high later in the week!

The commodity markets also began the week in an interesting way. After a downtick upon the return from the weekend PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. due to weak export inspections, St. Paul corn then followed soybeans higher on Election Day. On election night, as electoral votes piled up in Donald Trump’s column, the stock market and commodity markets plunged. However, his victory speech calmed fears and the markets rallied into the Wednesday opening. Export demand and technical strength were also strong factors behind the run-up on Election Day. In an interesting twist, on the heels of the election we were thrown the November World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.

The November government report was bearish with the highest yield ever published on a WASDE report at 175.3 bushels per acre, up 1.9 bu./acre from October and 2.1 higher than estimates! Production was set at 15.226 billion bushels, up 169 million bushels from last month, and ending stocks at 2.403 billion bushels, up 83 million bushels vs.

The livestock markets seem to be mired in a stagnant price pattern as of late. Both the cattle and hog markets continue to be entrenched in a long-term bear market which has continued for several months.

Each has stabilized to some degree in the past few weeks, but neither has changed the overall pattern which is still a negative price pattern.

The cattle market has been attempting to form a bottom during the past several weeks. However, each time the market has climbed to the $105-$106 area, the market has encountered resistance.

This has been reflected at the consumer level as beef is overpriced to the rest of the meat complex. This has continued to show up in the volume in the boxed beef trade which is very slow when compared to years past. So far, when the beef cutout reaches into the mid-$180s hundredweight, the volume decreases appreciably and prices fall back.

Another factor which continues to plague the cattle market is the fact that meat in cold storage remains high and this supply is greater than current demand.

Eventually, meat production in all sectors will begin to decline and this will help alleviate any supply problems which may exist today. Producers should be leery of market rallies until the market can break through the resistance areas.

Ample supplies and a stronger dollar led to relatively low prices for the 2015-16 year, meaning soybeans were not the most profitable choice for producers when deciding which crop to plant for 2016.

During the course of the 2016 marketing year, low prices helped out demand for U.S. exports and dryness in South America rebounded prices to nearly $10 per bushel again. Is it realistic to expect soybean prices to be in the $13 to $15 range anytime soon? In the face of larger supplies and increased planting prospects, soybean prices will be hard-pressed to continue their rally past $10 per bushel. South American weather seems to be cooperating early in the growing season. The U.S. Department of Agriculture raised its November estimate for U.S. production to average 52.5 bushels per acre, and increased the carryout up to 480 million bushels. These numbers exceeded most analysts’ predictions.

U.S. growers are also planning their cropping decisions for 2017 and with the recent profits for many soybean growers, low input cost, and room in the

90 percent complete and 80 percent complete in the number two state of Parana. Brazil’s Safras pegged grower sales at 25 percent vs. 41 percent last year and 30 percent sold on average. CONAB is forecasting Brazil’s 2016-17 soybean crop in a range of 101.6 mmt to 103.5 mmt, down slightly from their previous estimate. They are pegging exports at 52 mmt for 2015-16 and 57 mmt for 2016-17. The USDA’s Brazilian production projection is 102 mmt with exports at 58.7 mmt. The Rosario Grain Exchange’s first Argentine crop estimate of the year is 52.5 mmt vs. USDA’s 57 mmt. At this time, local meteorologists in Argentina predict La Niña will have minimal impact on their soybean, corn and wheat crops this year. La Niña would normally bring dry conditions to the growing regions. If anything this year, too much moisture in some areas of Argentina is the concern.

Brazilian politics have become news again.

Remember President Rousseff was removed from office earlier this year. The successor was Michel Temer. Lawyers for the former President have now presented evidence suggesting current President Temer accepted bribes from a construction company during his 2014 election campaign. If this turns out to be true, he may also be removed from office.

Weekly exports sales of soybeans were disappointing and were the second lowest of the crop year at 36.8 million bushels. We are running 28 percent ahead of last year with total commitments at 1.36 billion bushels. This is 66.5 percent of the record 2.050 billion bushel export forecast. We need to keep the exports front-end loaded with strong competition from South America. China bought 5.2 mmt of soybeans in October, slightly below the 5.4 mmt estimate, and down 5.8 percent from last October.

From January through October, China imported 66.4 mmt of soybeans, up 1.2 mmt from the previous year.

OUTLOOK: For the week, January soybeans fell 4.75 cents to $9.86 per bushel, July only dropped .75 cents to $10.08, and November 2017 was up 1.50 cents at $9.84 per bushel. The November 2017 contract hit $10.10 per bushel this week. Producers may want to consider where they want to make their first benchmark sale for 2017. December meal was down $1.20 at $307.80 and December soyoil was .27 lower at 34.44. For a sustained rally in soybeans, we’re going to need a significant weather problem to develop in South America or for China to substantially increase imports. At the moment, neither seems to be the case. Money flow from outside sources is unpredictable, but can be a heavy influence on our markets, particularly in the soy complex. This may keep traders on edge and volatility high. Fundamentally, the market should lean to the bearish side.

Nystrom’s Notes: Contract changes for the week ending Nov. 11: December Chicago wheat slid 11.25 cents lower and Kansas City fell 1.25 cents, while the Minneapolis contract rallied 9.75 cents higher.

December crude oil declined 66 cents to $43.41 per barrel, ULSD dropped 3 cents, RBOB pulled back 7.25 cents and natural gas plunged 15 cents. The U.S. dollar index had rallied 2 full points for the week. ❖

of the range we’ve been in since early October. The 50 percent retracement from the September low of $3.14.75 to the October high of $3.59.25 is $3.37 per bushel. This is viewed as first support, but a move toward $3.25 would not be all that surprising. The December 2017 contract was gaining interest this week when it peaked at $3.93.75 per bushel, but the attraction faded when prices tumbled lower. For the week, December and July corn each fell 8.50 cents at $3.40.25 and $3.64 per bushel respectively. The December 2017 contract declined 7.50 cents to $3.79.50 per bushel.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans charged higher out of the gate to begin the week on fund buying and extended their rally in the lead-up to the election. Fresh soybean and meal export sales, huge export inspections, and fund buying kept the demand side fresh in everyone’s minds. Palm oil trading to a four-year high and China’s soybean upward trending market were positive influences for the majority of the week. Palm oil rallied when stocks were only up 1.7 percent when they expected to be up 8 percent, production estimates and their currency declined. The rollercoaster trade on election night kept traders unsure and looking for the next input. The next input was the November crop report. The report turned out to be more bearish than anyone anticipated. The postWASDE decline was countered the next day as the Brazilian real plunged vs. the U.S. dollar. Heavy producer sales in South American beans ensued as their soybeans became very competitive with U.S. beans for January. When its currency is “cheap” vs. the U.S. dollar, its products are more attractive to buyers.

Heading into the weekend, China’s meal and soybean markets plunged on reports that regulators had forced liquidation when speculators exceed position limits (unconfirmed). This put pressure on the U.S. markets to end the week.

The November crop report pushed the yield to 52.5 bu./acre (up 1.1 bu./acre from October), production to 4.361 billion bushels (up 92 million bushels) and ending stocks at an excessive 480 million bushels (up 85 million bushels from October). Ending stocks were only estimated at 420 million bushels in prereport polls. If the ending stocks are correct, they would be the third largest carryout on record. Usage category changes included a cut in crush of 20 million, a 25 million increase in exports and a 1 million bushel rise in residual use. The ending stocks to use ratio jumped to 11.7 percent in November from 9.6 percent in October and compared to 5 percent in 2015-16. This is the first time since 2006-07 that we’ve see the stocks to use ratio in double digits. On Nov. 13, 2006, January 2007 soybeans were $6.57.50 per bushel with the balance sheet showing 574 million in ending stocks for 2006-07 for an 18.6 percent stocks to use ratio. The average on-farm price forecast this month rose 15 cents to a range of $8.45 to $9.95 per bushel. World ending stocks soared to 81.5 mmt from 77.4 mmt last month and compared to estimates for 77 mmt.

Brazil and Argentina’s production numbers were unchanged on the report at 102 mmt and 57 mmt respectively. Brazil’s AgRural put bean planting in their number one producing state of Mato Grosso at

This accounted for nearly onethird of the total U.S. increase! The trade estimate missed the actual production number by the biggest margin in 30 years! If the U.S. ending stocks number proves accurate, it would be the highest carryout since 1987-88 and the fifth largest on record. Usage category changes included a food, seed and industrial use increase of 85 million bushels of which 25 million bushels came from ethanol usage. The ending stocks to use ratio was marginally higher at 16.4 percent. The average farm price outlook range was raised a nickel to $3.00 to $3.60 per bushel. Some are questioning whether the feed usage line at 5.65 billion bushels (unchanged) is too high. Cattle herds are being left on pasture longer than normal, thanks to the warmer than usual temperatures across the Plains. Rail corn values into Texas were pressing four-year lows. World ending stocks were sharply higher at 218.2 mmt compared to estimates for 216.2 mmt and last month’s 216.8 mmt.

Weekly export sales were in line with estimates at 48.6 million bushels. Total commitments are 89 percent ahead of last year at 1.023 billion bushels. This accounts for 46 percent of the USDA’s 2.225 billion bushel export forecast. The five-year average of sales on the books as a percentage of total projections is 49 percent for this time of year. Weekly ethanol production dropped by 20,000 barrels per day to 1.002 million barrels, but it is still the highest level on record for this week. Ethanol stocks fell for the eighth time in the last 10 weeks, down 500,000 barrels to 19.2 million barrels.

While Argentina may have some areas of weather concern, too wet, it’s really too early to be excited. In Brazil, pork and poultry feeders have been substituting quality feed wheat for corn in rations. Early in the week in Rio Grande do Sul, wheat was trading at $178.50 per ton compared to corn at $225.50 per ton.

A 10 percent wheat discount to corn reportedly will push a switch to wheat. The WASDE report left Argentina and Brazil’s crop production outlooks unchanged for 2016-17 at 36.5 million metric tons and 83.5 mmt respectively. They did however raise Argentina’s 2015-16 production 1 mmt to a record 29 mmt. As of Nov. 4, Brazil’s corn planting was put at 75 percent complete vs. 67 percent last year.

Argentina’s corn planting was 31 percent complete as of the same date vs. 41 percent estimated.

OUTLOOK: The market opinion is we may find it difficult for corn to earn its board carry. There is already some chatter that we could take out the fall lows later this winter/early spring if the carryout continues to climb. Adding to the negative pattern, Celeres estimates Brazil’s summer corn crop at 35.1 mmt compared to 25.9 mmt last year. CONAB is pegging that crop at 26.3-27.7 mmt. The USDA has Brazil’s corn crop at 83.5 mmt (includes first and second crop) and Argentina at 36.5 mmt. Basis levels in the United States are firming in the eastern Corn Belt as processors need to keep the pipeline flowing.

Looking at November 2017 soybean prices, beans in the $10 range may feel pretty good again with the compression of margins we have seen for corn and other crops. Many producers I work with adopted a risk management mindset. Instead of trying to wait for the absolute highest prices, they were successful pricing in corn and soybeans earlier in 2016.

For 2017, multi-peril crop insurance at 85 percent levels for soybeans in areas where it is affordable will help the forward contracting decision on a higher percentage of the crop. It’s good to keep in mind that there are private crop insurance products available to supplement multi-peril insurance

including Harvest Max, Rev Net, Price Flex and Hail and Wind coverage. Thinking about crop insurance as a strategy, rather than as a cost of doing business, can give growers an opportunity to maximize the guaranteed amount of income brought back to the farm. The fundamental story can change quickly during the marketing year, and don’t let beans in the 10s pass you by.

Dry, warm weather helps farmers complete harvest Above average temperatures and dry weather allowed Minnesota farmers to continue harvest and field activities during the week ending Nov. 13, with 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

There continued to be some excessively wet areas that farmers were unable to harvest. Field activities for the week included harvesting, applying fertilizer, hauling manure, baling corn stalks and tillage.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus.

Corn for grain harvest advanced to 94 percent complete, four days behind the five-year average and eight days behind last year. Corn moisture content of grain at harvest was 17 percent. Regarding sunflowers, 91 percent of the acreage was harvested, five days behind average.

Iowa Minimal precipitation and warm temperatures allowed farmers to make progress towards harvest completion during the week ending Nov. 13, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Statewide there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Activities for the week included harvesting, baling corn stalks, tiling, terracing, hauling and spreading manure, and anhydrous application.

Topsoil moisture levels rated 2 percent very short, 10 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 2 percent very short, 6 percent short, 82 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus.

The corn crop for grain harvest is 94 percent complete, equal to the 5-year average. This was the first time during the 2016 corn for grain harvest that progress was not behind average. Moisture content of all corn for grain being harvested in Iowa was unchanged from last week at 16 percent.

While harvest is winding down in much of the State, southwest and south central Iowa still have over 10 percent of the corn crop and almost 10 percent of the soybean crop remaining to be harvested.

Grain movement from farm to elevator was rated 55 percent moderate to heavy, down 7 percentage points from the previous week. Off-farm grain storage availability was rated 65 percent adequate to surplus. On-farm grain storage availability was rated 59 percent adequate to surplus.

Livestock conditions were described as ideal with the week’s above normal temperatures and drier conditions.

The decline in the cash trade appears to be slowing its descent since the pork cutout has remained fairly stable in recent weeks. Packer margins are very good and this has increased the interest by the packer to accumulate live inventory.

Currently, hog numbers are still more than the cur-

rent demand. However, as the hog numbers decline as producers slow replacing numbers, this should result in improving prices for hogs. However, this is ahead of the current situation and the influx of pork into cold storage must begin to decline for this scenario to work. Until the cash price for hogs turns the corner and prices paid by the packer improve, the market is likely to remain in a quagmire for the time being.

Therefore, producers should remain patient and continue to remain current in marketing and protect inventories when available. ❖

Midwest cheese makers running near full capacity MIELKE from pg. 21A Forecasts for butter and nonfat dry milk were lowered as supplies remain large. For 2017, large supplies of butter are expected to continue to pressure prices, but prices of cheese, whey and NDM are expected to strengthen.

The Class III milk price forecast was raised for both 2016 and 2017 on higher cheese and whey prices. Look for the 2016 Class III price to average $14.70-$14.80 per hundredweight, up 40 cents from last month’s report and compares to $15.80 in 2015 and $22.34 in 2014. The 2017 average was put at $15.30-$16.20, up $1.10 from last month’s projection.

However, lower butter prices are expected to more than offset higher NDM prices and Class IV prices for both years were lowered from last month. The 2016 average was estimated at $13.55-$13.75/cwt. down a nickel from a month ago and compares to $14.35 in 2015 and $22.09 in 2014.

The 2017 average was projected to range $13.55-$14.55, down 15 cents from last month.

■ Speaking of milk prices; the strong cheese market propelled California’s

December Class I milk prices. The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced its December price at $19.22/cwt. for the north and $19.49 for the south. Both are up $3.09 from November, 89 cents above a year ago, and the highest Class I since January 2015.

The northern 2016 Class I average is $16.26, down from $17.69 in 2015 and $24.76 in 2014. The southern average, at $16.53, is down from $17.96 in 2015 and $25.03 in 2014. The December Federal order Class I base milk price is announced by USDA on Nov. 23.

Cash dairy prices had some surprises just as the election did. After block Cheddar climbed to $1.9425 per pound Wednesday, the highest since November 2014, they fell 5.75 cents on a sale on Veteran’s Day, to $1.8850, down 1.5 cents on the week but 26.5 cents above a year ago. The barrels finished at $1.7550, down 10.5 cents on the week, 28.75 cents above a year ago when they plunged 18.25 cents, but are at a Trump-Clinton size difference of 13 cents below the blocks. Five cars of block and 18 of barrel were sold on the week.

Midwest cheese makers say milk intakes are holding steady and many plants are running at or near full capacity, reports Dairy Market News.

“Processors are eager to make cheese as fast as they can to keep up with holiday orders.” Retail demand is “steady” and some contacts say the warm fall weather has helped extend grilling season.

Contacts suggest “the desire for fresh cheese is strong and driving market prices. Although consumer demand has been good, some manufacturers note wholesalers are more hesitant due to the recent price increases. Buyers are willing to take regular contract shipments, but are taking a wait and see approach to any additional loads of cheese. Ample cheese inventories are available for barrels and some varieties of block cheese.”

Western cheesemakers report that strong seasonal demand for branded and bulk cheese is continuing and retail is “pulling good volumes.” Cheese inventories are generally high but a few contacts report some varieties of fresh block cheese are harder to come by. “Cheesemakers are mostly concentrating on current seasonal demand as opposed to looking beyond the end of the year,” Dairy Market News concludes. “The hope for exports has dried up with the current gap between higher U.S. cheese prices and global cheese prices.”

■ Cash butter topped $2 for the first time since late September, closing Nov.

“Consequently, cream supplies are tightening. However, there are sufficient cream volumes clearing into churns.

“Some Thanksgiving holiday orders are in the final phases of production and delivery. Bulk inventories are steady to lower while print supplies are in balance.

“Western butter production is active as processors work hard to keep up with strong seasonal demand. Cream is generally in good supply, but other holiday favorites are also pulling at cream supplies.” Retail and bulk butter demand are reportedly drawing stocks lower, according to Dairy Market News.

Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Nov. 11 at 87.75 cents per pound, up 3 cents on the week and 6.75 cents above a year ago, with 17 cars sold on the week.

■ USDA’s latest dairy export data is mixed. FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski reported in his Nov. 7 Early Morning Update that cheese exports were just over 22,000 metric tons in September, down 1 percent from September 2015.

at 15.2 billion bushels, up 1 percent from the October forecast and up 12 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of Nov. 1, yields are expected to average 175.3 bushels per acre, up 1.9 bushels from the October forecast and up 6.9 bushels from 2015.

If realized, this would be the highest yield and production on record for the United States. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 86.8 million acres, unchanged from the October forecast but up 8 percent from 2015.

Soybean production, forecast at a record 4.36 billion bushels, is up 2 percent from October and up 11 percent from 2015.

Based on Nov. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average a record 52.5 bu./acre, up 1.1 bushels from last month and up 4.5 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at a record 83.0 million acres, unchanged from last month.

Cotton production was forecast at 16.2 million 480pound bales, up 1 percent from October and up 25 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 803 pounds per harvested acre, up 6 pounds from last year.

The USDA’s latest National Milk Cost of Production report shows September total milk production costs were virtually unchanged from the previous month but still below a year ago. Total feed costs averaged $10.64/cwt., down 30 cents from July, down 13 cents from August, and $1.27 below September 2015. Purchased feed costs, at $6.01/cwt., were down 36 cents from July, down 11 cents from August, and 71 cents below September 2015.

MIELKE from pg. 22A Sales to Japan continue to be sluggish versus last year, he said, and sales to the Middle East and North African countries are “not inspiring either.” Cheese exports to South Korea were up 19 percent from last year, but year-todate cheese exports are down 15 percent at 209,000 metric tons or roughly 461 million pounds which reflects 5.1 percent of total U.S. cheese production.

Dry whey exports were “impressive,” according to Kurzawski, up 36 percent from last September at 15,217 metric tons, with year-to-date exports down 5 percent.

“Roughly 52,000 metric tons of nonfat dry milk and skim milk powder was exported and reflect about 70 percent of September’s total NFDM/SMP production.

With another strong month of SMP production in September up 43.3 percent from last year we expect strong export number for the next few months to spill over,” Kurzawski concludes.

■ Dairy margins have been flat to slightly stronger since the middle of October as higher milk prices offset slightly higher feed costs, according to the latest Margin Watch from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging. “Forward margins remain in the top quartile of the past decade, with Second Quarter near the 85th percentile,” the Margin Watch reports. “Milk prices have been supported by recent strength in cheese and butter trade at the CME. Prices have firmed, despite recent USDA Cold Storage data indicating lofty stocks of both.

“Feed costs held relatively steady over the past two weeks with corn trading sideways and soybean meal slightly higher. Harvest is winding down across much of the Midwest and attention has increasingly shifted to demand. Weekly export sales and shipments of both soybean meal and corn have been quite strong, although in line to meet current USDA projections,” the Margin Watch concludes.

Penn State’s James Dunn’s Dairy Outlook says “Corn and soybean meal prices are essentially the same as last month, with corn up 0.3 percent and meal up 0.9 percent respectively in the past month, with soybean prices up 2.6 percent.”

Dunn says, “The U.S. corn and soybean crop will be record yields and production. Exports of corn and beans are large. Income over Feed Costs (IOFC) Penn State’s measure of income over feed costs rose by 0.6 percent in October from September, as lower milk prices combined with somewhat lower feed prices.”

October’s IOFC is the highest since November 2014, according to Dunn. “Income over feed cost reflects daily gross milk income less feed costs for an average cow producing 65 pounds of milk per day. The milk margin is the estimated amount of the Pennsylvania all milk price that remains after the feed costs per hundredweight of milk production are paid. Like income over feed cost, this measure shows that the September Pennsyvlania milk margin was 0.6 percent higher than in August. The Pennsylvania drought is easing, although any change now will have little effect on 2016 production,” according to Dunn.

ts official name is the Nelson and Albin Store (named for two townships), founded in 1894. “But we just call it the Godahl Store,” said Wendy Butler, who took over as manager in 2016 after working part-time for a number of years.

The store’s claim to fame in this once dominantly Norwegian area is that it “is the oldest continuously operated cooperative general merchandise store in Minnesota.”

According to Butler, the Godahl Store is not actually owned by anybody. It has a five-member board which oversees operations. It used to be a working cooperative where farmers brought their produce. The main floor was stocked to the ceiling with groceries and shoes, the basement was full of hardware, and the second floor had furniture.

“Now it is not a cooperative, but a community effort,” Butler said. “We still do a lot of things the old-fashioned way. The cash register is from the 1930s. We have charge books for the locals — the people that we know.”

The grocery shelves are sparingly stocked with items people ask for.

A few food trucks stop, but Butler said most companies don’t think it is worthwhile to do so. She buys merchandise on shopping trips. A volunteer picks up milk in a larger town and brings it to stock the cooler.

“I may work here alone, but I’ve got people helping,” Butler said.

Like any general store, it’s not just for shopping. There is a women’s card club that plays at the tables in the gathering area, and a group of men who socialize there morning and afternoon.

Along with the groceries, there are a few hardware items for sale. A local craft person has items available, and there is a magazine exchange rack. There is also a small library supplied by the bookmobile. There’s a freezer case with ice cream treats, and an area that Butler describes as an ongoing rummage sale. In addition to the library, people bring books to share.

Godahl is a hamlet of 14 people that sits on a curve where Minnesota State Highway 4 runs on the border of Brown and Watonwan counties. It explodes to 2,000-3,000 people on Labor Day when the Godahl Recreation Center holds its annual fundraising celebration. The store also holds fundraisers to make it profitable, Butler said, and some people just donate money.

“It’s a self-perpetuating thing,” Butler said. “It stays open because it’s important to the people that it stays open. I tell people we exist because it is important to exist.

There are times people don’t want to drive 13 miles each way to get a gallon of milk.” ❖

These pumpkins are ready to ship. future and wanted to provide college money for his boys, just like his parents had done for all seven of their kids.

“They learned how to work hard.

Their employers have told me so,” said Pat. His plan worked financially as well because the family has no college debt.

Sam still lives at home and is a mechanic at Witzel Pronto in Fulda.

Ben is in the Navy and stationed at the Air Force base in San Antonio. Ted is a mechanic at Jaycox Implement in Worthington. He is the closest to farming because he raises bottle calves.

“I wanted to earn my living off the land,” said Pat. Since he isn’t a large farmer, income is limited. Establishing a produce mar-

ket helped achieve this goal. Originally, a variety of produce was grown around the farm’s building site.

Acreage has gradually increased. This year they planted 4 acres of winter squash, including acorn, amber, buttercup, butternut, carnival, delicate, hubbard and spaghetti. Add to that 5 acres of sweet corn; 68 acres of jack-olantern type pumpkins (not including blue ones), cinderellas, mammoth, pie, mini orange, mini white and white. A variety of other vegetables grow on about 10 acres.

When Pat was establishing the produce farm, Doreen was completing her college degree. She has been a special education teacher in nearby Fulda for 15 years.

Fresh produce appears on the market in July, but the process of planting and harvesting is nearly a year-round project. Some preparations begin before the end of the year, and “It starts in January with tomato seeds,” says Doreen.

One of her many responsibilities is planting seeds and transferring them to flats, and if necessary, to 4-inch pots before the small plants are transplanted into the field. Sweet corn, squash and pumpkins are sown with a corn planter, but other seeds are planted by hand.

The Habermans had rented about 6

million honey bees to pollinate their pumpkins and other cucurbits (members of the gourd family). Even though they work around these bees for about two months, Pat is not interested in owning the honeybees since he is allergic to insect stings. The Habermans now own bumble bees for this job because they can’t find anyone from whom to rent them. It’s interesting to note that honeybees do not pollinate tomatoes.

All produce is harvested by hand.

This past sweet corn growing season stretched from July 17 to Oct. 11.

During the summer, workers head to the field at 6 a.m. to harvest the ears.

In mid-October, the Habermans had 21 employees on the payroll — most of them harvesting pumpkins and preparing them for market. The recent minimum wage bill increased production costs, and thus, grocery stores charged more for fresh produce.

Corn and soybean fields round out the Haberman farm.

Orange pumpkins symbolize the autumn season, and Thanksgiving dinners wouldn’t be complete without a slice of flavorful pumpkin pie.

The orange fruit grown on a vine is related to gourds and squash. It provided nourishment for Native Americans before Europeans arrived on the eastern shores of what is now the United States. Newcomers learned from their neighbors how to cook the fruit when it was fresh or after they had preserved it by drying the flesh in strips.

Pumpkins seem to sprout up out of nowhere on front porches, grocery store parking lots and anchor artistic seasonal arrangements. However, growing and harvesting the popular garden product is labor intensive. Pat and Doreen Haberman speak with authority about the work involved because they grow many, many pumpkins on their Brewster Fresh Produce farm in Nobles County. Pumpkins are just one of many products they grow.

Are hazelnuts a viable ‘third crop’ for Midwest?

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer LAKE CITY, Minn. — Norm Erickson, who grows a 12-acre hazelnut orchard in Lake City, is one of the largest commercial operations in Minnesota right now.

“It’s just in its infancy. If I had a thousand more acres I think I could sell them!” he said.

He may be right.

Erickson commented, “I get calls from restaurants. I get calls from wholesalers. Right now, I don’t have enough production to support even one farmers market. Consumers are going for the taste, flavor and nutritional value.”

According to the Upper Midwest Hazelnut Development Initiative website, there are 130 hazelnut growers in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa with nearly 135 acres of production.

Erickson was tree farming for about 35 years in the Rochester area. “I’ve always been interested in growing trees,” he said. “I spent a lot of my adult life working in the woods, cutting logs and hauling them to a friend’s saw mill operation.”

In 2003, the Ericksons bought their land in Lake City. He has attended many Minnesota Department of Natural Resources workshops, including the tree care advisory series at the University of Minnesota.

“In my tree farm at Pine Island, I noted there were a few hazelnut bushes. I had been planting walnuts for years. I went up there in late summer

— Norm Erickson and saw the hazelnut bushes were full of nuts. I went up a week later with a 5 gallon pickle bucket.

But every hazelnut bush was stripped. The squirrels love ’em. And that got me to thinking that maybe this little bush tree called hazelnut has some food value for humans too!”

He and wife Mary sell virtually every pound of production off their Hazelnut Valley Farm at the Mill City Farmers Market in Minneapolis. Thousands come to the market every Saturday and the Ericksons sell out every week.

“We sell a half-pound bag for $5. Never any questions about price. They taste so good, people are happy to shell out the $5,” said Erickson with a wink.

By late October, the nuts are all gone except for culls or splits.

“These we process for the oil and sell that as skin care,” said Erickson. “Like they say in the pork industry, we sell everything but the squeal. We sell the shells for garden mulch.”

Producing hazelnuts It’s a slow start with these hazelnuts. “Seedlings are generally one to two years in the nursery before we put them in the field,” Erickson explained. “The earliest production we’ve had is three years, but more typically its five to six years before these bushes start yielding.”

In the field, bushes are spaced about 4 feet in the row with an 8-10-foot spacing between rows. His most productive bush so far yielded 11.9 pounds of husked out nuts. In an ongoing effort to increase yields in his orchard, he and his crew cull vigorously.

“We cull hundreds every year,” said Erickson.

“Those bushes that don’t realize they are out there to produce nuts suddenly have a short life. We don’t want pollen from these inferior bushes part of the total pollen cloud. That’s how we increase the genetic punch. Last year, we culled out several hundred bushes at the back end of our orchard. Current bush count is about 4,000 on those 12 acres.”

Longevity, however, is certainly not an issue. When asked how many years his hazelnut orchard might last, Erickson said maybe a few centuries.

“That’s because when a particular bush or orchard starts backsliding on nut production, that bush gets cut off at ground level. They reinvent themselves just like lilac bushes,” he explained.

Harvest starts in September and used to be a labor-intensive process with nut pickers slashing off the nut clusters into baskets. But technology came to the rescue. Erickson and two other growers bought a used blueberry harvester in Michigan and repur-

posed it for hazelnuts.

“It works just wonderfully,” Erickson said. “It’s got a set of slapper bars on each side. The nuts drop to trays and then onto conveyers which load them into totes. And from there, the further processing of drying, husking, aspirating and finally the shelling and packaging for the retail market.”

At this stage, all of Erickson’s processing equipment is self-built.

“I buy components and build to do the job,” he said.

“I’m on my third prototype husker right now, so we’re constantly striving to improve the entire process.

Because this is where the real value is determined.

Nuts are sorted by size, then cracked and aspirated.

Before finally putting the nuts into the retail package, there is a final eyeball sorting to remove any nuts which might have been damaged by fungus or insects. My wife is very particular about this process because she knows that just one bad customer experience and you’ve likely lost that customer.”

And there’s one final process. Nuts are roasted before bagging, then labeled and ready to market.

“It’s that roasting process that develops the flavor,” revealed Erickson. “A raw nut is not very tasty. It’s like raw oatmeal. Until you add the brown sugar, lingonberries and hazelnuts, it’s a pretty tasteless meal.”

Even hazelnuts on oatmeal are part of this consumer-driven food mania.

This harvesting and processing period means those hazelnuts aren’t hitting food markets and retail counters until the Thanksgiving and holiday season.

But for Erickson and other hazelnut farmers, getting their products out before that holiday season is enticing. Homegrown hazelnuts can beat the influx of foreign hazelnuts into Twin Cities markets.

Hazelnut industry Hazelnuts used in commercial production come from Turkey, with Oregon leading the United States in hazelnut production. The hazelnuts currently grown in Minnesota are American hazelnuts or hybrids with the European hazelnut.

According to the Upper Midwest Hazelnut Development Initiative, the smaller kernels of the American hazelnut and hybrids may be preferred for use in trail mixes, nut clusters, baking and granola. The initiative is a collaboration of growers and researchers that are working to develop a sustainable hazelnut industry in the Upper Midwest.

Efforts include field days, research reports and information on growing and processing.

There are other groups too. Erickson and a small group of growers have formed the Minnesota Hazelnut Foundation.

In 2014, the American Hazelnut Company, a hazelnut processing facility, opened in Gays Mills, Wis. The company is grower-owned with 12 grower-owners working together to process and market hazelnuts. The company offers whole kernels, oil and flour.

because the west fork of the Little Sioux River runs between their farms. The river has had a major impact on both their farms, especially when it floods and takes out the fences.

On the Schlenger farm south of Marcus, Iowa, there was a perfect patch of green grass, surrounded on three sides by evergreens, maples and black walnuts. A machine shed was its fourth border. Neighbors often commented what a beautiful park area it was amidst corn and soybean fields.

Then, one day, Kate Schlenger — with the help of her friend Kay Ogren — tilled seven strips of soil 50 feet long.

Oh my, now what could these two women be up to?

Friends since they had married men who were high school classmates, Schlenger and Ogren had lived in Tilden township all of their lives. Their farms, just two miles apart, were similar crop and cow/calf operations. They are members of the same church.

At times, Schlenger would mention her father’s daylily garden near Atlantic, Iowa.

“My father had close to 800 daylilies,” said Ogren.

“He is now 92 years old, still planting daylilies. But we wondered what would happen to those lilies someday.”

“Many people just think of daylilies, as the original wild one,” she added. “Though they are very beautiful, there is a whole world of daylilies that is overlooked.”

Over at Ogren’s place, there are daylilies too. It’s a haven for a variety that might need revitalization, or extra tender care of an immature plant, or a home for extra daylilies.

Open house During that very first year, an open house was held at the Schlenger farm. By 2016, when their open house was held on July 16 and 17, guests saw the number of daylilies blooming had expanded to about 300. The display of blossoms was spectacular.

“Our open house dates vary,” said Schlenger. “It’s a bit difficult to predict when most of the daylilies will be looking their best. As in any farming venture, weather plays such an important part.”

During the two days of the open house, husbands, grandchildren and friends help with the business.

Each daylily name is printed on a stake by the plant.

Before the open house, Schlenger and Ogren walk through the gardens determining how many plants can be sold without depleting the plant too much.

“This is recorded,” said Schlenger. “Our guests write down the varieties they want. Our husbands keep track of how many have been sold. Once a variety limit is reached, the grandchildren run out to place a white flag indicating that this one is no longer available.”

Around Labor Day, Schlenger and Ogren dig up the plants and lay them out inside the machine shed.

Each one is labeled and they take the lists and gather each customer’s order. Once a customer’s order is finished, they are called to come pick up their tagged lilies for planting in their gardens.

“Daylilies come in every color or combination of colors, with the exception of true white, black and blue,” said Schlenger. “Even the blossom style can differ, from deep ruffled to slightly ruffled, rolled, pointed, doubles, spiders, and many more styles.”

Daylilies are called daylilies because the beautiful blossom only lasts one day. But never mind, a new one replaces it each day during its bloom season. The Latin name of the daylily genus Hermerocallis actually means “beautiful for a day” in Greek.

“Generally, a variety will bloom for approximately four weeks,” said Schlenger. “As with most flowers, there are early, mid and late-season bloom seasons for a variety. So if a garden is planted with daylilies that bloom in each season, ones garden will be full of blooming daylilies all summer, making the bloom season last quite a while.”

Daylilies are an excellent perennial, as they are a hardy, tough plant — surviving unpredictable winters and summers. They can usually handle late snows or early frosts. Because West Fork Daylilies is located in the zone four growing designation, they have chosen the dormant and semi-evergreen for their varieties. The evergreen variety is more suited for warmer areas.

Whenever anyone visits West Fork Daylilies, they also smile at the enchanting, attractive gardens.

Schlenger and Ogren have also expanded their circle of friends, and just enjoy the smiles they see on their visitors. They know those smiles will be repeated when the daylilies bloom in their new homes. ❖

That wider window from field to processing plant is a definite advantage favoring the ROPA system, said McNamara.

“With us, harvest to processing plant in a one-step operation doesn’t always meet the tolerance requirements of our Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative. If we could field pile, then reload to factory at a later schedule, the ROPA harvester with field carts might ramp up our efficiencies by 35 to 40 percent. Plus, we’d be reloading our own dirt back onto our own fields. But that increases the unpredictability of harvest on any given day,” he said.

That’s why there are several piling sites within the production area of SMBSC. “Stockpiling beets at various piling sites are necessary to reduce unintended processing delays,”

said McNamara.

However, more sugar per acre with the ROPA system is a reality because you minimize the harvesting loss of conventional scalping. His estimate is upwards of 4 ton per acre.

Cory Erickson, who lives in the Raymond area, was a first-time user of a ROPA unit this fall.

“The job it did in our wet conditions I think was a plus and it did a better job of lifting the tails too. It got the entire beet out of the ground,” said Erickson.

“However, the single drum defoliator versus the three drums of our conventional lifter didn’t do as good a job of cleaning up the beets.”

A faster harvest may be a benefit also.

“We could travel a little bit faster with the ROPA,” Erickson went on to say. “We use 12-row harvesters however, so you don’t get as much done with this 8row unit. But I think soil compaction is less with the ROPA because of its big tires and unique tracking.

However, I think we’d need two beet carts because we’re dumping directly into our trucks which make a quick trip to the piling site. We don’t field dump and pick up later like they do in Europe.”

A 12-row header is likely for the American market.

The owner and chief engineer of ROPA visited Minnesota in mid-October suggesting a 12-row unit may become a reality.

“We’ve got to work our way through the numbers — plus the pros and cons; then put a pencil to the data before we make a decision on putting a ROPA into your program,” said Erickson.

He and his brother grow roughly 1,500 acres of sugar beets.

Sugar beet harvest is an extremely complicated process. Fitting harvest schedules to delivery schedules and trucking allocations while doing battle with the frequent delivery of non-allocated rain showers is indeed a many-splendored challenge. ❖

“Germans are very good at building things,” he said. “Their electronic skills are superior. Start up the machine and the computers turn on and everything seems to work perfectly right off the bat.

“There are a large number of buttons in the cab.

Most of those, however, just pertain to setting up the machine. Once you are operating, it’s pretty simple; just a few buttons and memory presets which let you accommodate different conditions within the field.

“You’ll do some adjustments with the shoe speed of the shakers, the height of the roller bed and a few more things. But once made, it’s a very simple machine to run,” said Everson.

There’s a hefty price tag on these machines — in the $700,000 range. Warranty provisions pertaining to hydraulic systems, engines, bearings and certain wear items are included.

“Having a local company such as us available for

parts and servicing made a difference,” said Everson.

“It just got people a little more excited about the ROPA. It’s pretty tough to have your expensive beet lifter broke down and nobody around to service it. As we all know, down time is really bad time in this sugar beet business.”

Less dirt into the transport trucks is part of the ROPA sales pitch. “I was surprised,” Everson admitted. “We heard reports of a cleaner harvest with a ROPA harvester. I recall a big inch and a half of rain on a Sunday. We lifted beets the next Monday afternoon and they came out really clean.”

Everson is excited about his new business venture with ROPA. “I’m glad we got in at ground level because there’s a fair amount to learn with parts and repair techniques. I’m glad they didn’t call when we had 15 machines in the area and they said, ‘Hey, do you want to do this now?’”

One benefit for technicians is that the operator’s manual is built right into the computer, but you also get a printed copy.

“Just being able to access it right there on the monitor in the cab is super handy. And you don’t need to buy any diagnostic tools to hook up to the ROPA. Everything is done on board,” he said.

Everson is an Atwater, Minn., native, schooled at North Dakota State University in the John Deere ag tech program. A large building adjacent to the big coop elevator in Murdock caught his eye. The 80-by100-foot structure has big doors and ceilings high enough to handle big equipment. Everson employs three additional technicians (Andy Voorhees, Dustin Voorhees, Kerry Hettver). Zach Caskey heads up the parts department and keeps paperwork flowing in the proper direction.

Weather made this a challenging season for Ace Ag Service. But Everson compliments his farm customers. “Agriculture is mostly a rewarding business because we’re dealing with genuine people,” said Everson. ❖

In early issues of The Land, Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture Jon Wefald answered questions from readers in a feature called “Q&A: Commissioner Wefald.” In our first issue, Sept. 30, 1976, he answered questions about the potential for sunflower production in Minnesota, which Wefald wrote had increased by more than 12 times in the past decade.

On Dec. 24, 1999, The Land Staff Writer Mindy Ward wrote about Lawrence Klemek of Eagle Bend, Minn. He sold his farm, but held on to 40 acres to grow a cash crop of sunflowers. In the mid-1990s, Klemek began contracting with Mycogen Seeds for production of high-oleic sunflowers, which are used in many cooking oils. The flowers were shipped to a storage facility in western Minnesota, where they were stored before being hauled to North Dakota where they were crushed for oil. Klemek considered sunflowers a “good cash crop.”

“The harvest is done.” The Land spoke with a relieved Joan Lee on Nov. 6 as she was thrilled to report that both corn and soybean harvest is complete. The beans were done two weeks ago and a few days ago “Mark got the corn combined,” she said.

The organic bean yields were “not too bad.” Those beans will be hauled to the Clearbrook, Minn., elevator just as soon as the elevator can make room for the organic beans. Lee expects the beans to be hauled there any day now.

The corn was 150 to 175 bushels per acre which is “really good for us.” Lee’s husband, Mark, was able to dry the corn at a neighbor’s farm. After harvest was complete, the manure pit was hauled out along with getting the soybean and hay ground plowed. Mark plans on doing some disking next. The combine and other harvest equipment which has given Lee a headache or two this fall have been cleaned up and put away for the year.

Lee’s relieved that harvest “ended on a positive note” with no more mechanical issues. “It’s just a really good feeling to get all those crops out of the field and in the bins where they belong,” she said.

Start stop, start stop. That’s been the theme of harvest for Andy Pulk. The Land spoke with Pulk on Nov. 3 as he reported, “We’re about a quarter done with corn.” While harvest is slow going this year, he said, “Yields are exceptional.” Pulk admits the high yields in corn are a surprise. “I don’t know where it’s coming from,” Pulk said.

The corn is at 21 to 25 percent moisture, “a little wetter than I would like to see this time of year.” Rain has continued to be a constant this growing and now harvest season for Pulk. He said there’s “scattered rain showers every two days.”

That brings the total to 68 to 69 days of measurable rain on the Pulk farm since the end of May. The forecast calls for dry weather for the next seven to 10 days which will definitely help in getting the rest of corn harvested.

Even with corn left to combine, Pulk still plans on squeezing in a little time to enjoy the deer hunting opener weekend. With a robust deer population around Pulk’s farm, he’s hoping for some hunting success.

This fall has ushered in above-average temperatures which has resulted in the fact that Pulk’s “grass is still green in spots.” Green grass in November and high-yielding corn coming off the field makes this a fall to remember.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa November 10

“I’d say we’re 95 percent done with corn.” The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Nov. 10 as he was thrilled with the mild temperatures this fall and the amount of combining and additional field work that was getting done. As for the corn, “overall what’s left standing is pretty good.” The corn dried down well.

With harvest almost wrapped up, Moser was “surprised with the yields.” He was also “surprised that the beans never dried out really fast, it took a while to dry out.” Another surprise was that this year’s corn hybrids responded favorably even with the heat and growing conditions. They “took the stress well.”

Moser also noted that “really good dirt paid off.”

Looking ahead to the 2017 planting and growing season: “A big thing for me is going to be nitrogen application, spoon feeding your crop more.” Moser said, “We’re seeing good response in a field in splitting nitrogen application.” Along with “treating each individual field,” Moser will be quicker to spray fungicide on beans and corn to improve overall plant health.It’s vital to “watch inputs, watch what you put out there.”

While the yields were good this year, the prices could definitely use a boost.

Moser’s “hoping we get some demand going forward.” The bottom line for this year, next year and beyond is that “You got be optimistic if you want to farm.”

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

November 10 Two more days and corn harvest will be complete for John Nielsen.

The Land spoke with Nielsen on Nov. 10 as he reported that harvest is “really going good now.” There are only 200 acres left to combine and with dry, warm weather forecasted, the end of harvest is in sight.

As for how the corn crop this year compares to other years, “The corn is pretty darn good.” So good, in fact that it’s “probably the best crop I’ve ever had in my whole life.” That’s surprising considering the wet planting conditions Nielsen faced this year, the frost early in the growing season, the hail and storms this summer. Even with all those obstacles, the crops this year have been phenomenal. Nielsen attributes some of that to corn that was sprayed with fungicide which resulted in the yields being 20 to 30 bushels better than corn that wasn’t sprayed.

Nielsen believes that you really can’t cut back on the things that make the big yields. Doing the extras this year may have made all the difference in giving Nielsen high yielding corn and beans. As for what he might change for next year’s crops, “I’m not going to change a lot.” With only days left in the field, Nielsen is enjoying every minute of it, he said, “We’re having a lot of fun with good weather and crops.”
