Yes, Teddy’s creation was indeed a family project — assisted with a skid loader equipped with the necessary two spines for impaling and then lifting each of these 800-pound bales to their new function as components of this unique farm field display. Teddy stands about 18-feet tall! Devon, 18, Bryce, 17, Lane, 15 and Sheldon, 11, were the four sons doing the hands-on grunt work. Square bales are almost a relic these days. But Crystal dispatched one of her sons to check the hay mow. Yes, he found some old squares still in perfect shape.

The Teddy Bear concept came from Crystal. “Last year, we did a display featuring those lovable Minion characters,” she said. “I wanted something kids would love to see because they got really excited about the Minions last year. When Rosie talked about her soldier, I thought a Teddy Bear display would be appealing both to kids and adults. Rosie’s idea about her soldier friend suddenly made Teddy a reality for this year.”

Yes, last year taking down the Minion display was not the happiest day for Rosie and sister Hope, age 3.

Crystal imagines taking down Teddy will be an even bigger heartache. But Chuck says this particular display can stay up as long as Mother Nature’s winter weather permits. Crystal will help. “I’ll laminate the

Dream big and be “All in” when you work, love, pray

To the Editor: Sen. Amy Klobuchar should come out publicly against the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The TPP is a bad deal for Minnesotans whether it’s the loss of U.S. jobs, higher healthcare costs or more extreme energy extraction, it’s not hard to find reasons to oppose TPP. The senator has said that it is still being negotiated and that those problems can still be addressed. However, even if these harmful impacts were managed or accounted for, the TPP at its core would still violate people’s basic right to have a say in our communities and our democracy — all for the sake of protecting and expanding corporate profits.

TPP’s investor state dispute resolution (ISDS) would give 9,000 foreign corporations the power to sue governments at the state, local or federal level for any law they see as “impeding expected future profits.” That means if a corporation sees our national food

safety tests as too costly, or a Minnesota township’s decision to limit mining as a threat to their profits, they could sue for millions — or scare people out of passing those laws in the first place.

Think that would never happen?

Well, it already has. Country Of Origin Labeling was repealed even though 90 percent of American consumers supported it. On top of that, the suit wouldn’t be tried in American courts, but would go to a world tribunal and be judged by a rotating panel of corporate representatives. Do you think corporate representatives have the best interests of American citizens in mind? ISDS is fundamentally undemocratic and is at the core of TPP. Sen. Klobuchar should come out against TPP and stand with her constituents, not with the corporate interests who are behind the deal.

In his book, “All In,” Mark Batterson writes, “At some point in our lives, most of us stop living out of imagination and start living out of memory.

That’s the day we stop living and start dying.”

We encourage dreaming every time we ask preschoolers what they want to be when they grow up, and those in upper grades their plans for the future. We urge young people to think big, and then through education, endless encouragement, and life experiences, we equip them to pursue those dreams. It’s beautiful and good for the older generation to persuade the younger to follow their dreams as long as we continue to press in on our own dreams. Example is the best teacher.

And to think we are cheering on dreamers while we sit slouched on the sidelines is really no encouragement at all.

They say dreaming is free. It’s also easy. It’s the doing that’s hard and keeps people stuck in the starting blocks. And while a sliver of success can be attributed to gifts and abilities, it’s those with a can-do attitude and

“All in!” was the commitment my brother-in-law made to his bride, my baby sister. He was sold out on their marriage, and she would often catch him re-reading their wedding vows that he had printed, framed and hung in their bedroom. “All In!” is this season’s theme in the school where he taught and their young children attend. “All in” is what he thought, taught, and lived until his last breath when a tragic car accident recently took his life. And now he is “all in” to the fullness of life with Jesus Christ.

And while there are no words for our ache and grief, he showed family, friends, and students how to live “All in.” Not just for a dream realized, but for what matters most. As wonderful as it is to do, greater still is to belong.

This was his testimony, it’s mine, and I pray that it is yours, too: that we belong body and soul, in life and in death to our faithful Savior Jesus Christ. “The harvest is done.” The Land spoke with a relieved Joan Lee on Nov. 6 as she was thrilled to report that both corn and soybean harvest is complete. The beans were done two weeks ago and a few days ago “Mark got the corn combined,” she said.

The organic bean yields were “not too bad.” Those beans will be hauled to the Clearbrook, Minn., elevator just as soon as the elevator can make room for the organic beans. Lee expects the beans to be hauled there any day now.

The corn was 150 to 175 bushels per acre which is “really good for us.” Lee’s husband, Mark, was able to dry the corn at a neighbor’s farm. After harvest was complete, the manure pit was hauled out along with getting the soybean and hay ground plowed. Mark plans on doing some disking next. The combine and other harvest equipment which has given Lee a headache or two this fall have been cleaned up and put away for the year.

Lee’s relieved that harvest “ended on a positive note” with no more mechanical issues. “It’s just a really good feeling to get all those crops out of the field and in the bins where they belong,” she said.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa October 31

The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Halloween; but he didn’t have any scary tales to tell about harvest, just slow progress out in the field. Soybean harvest is all wrapped up, though the crop “never did dry out.” The bean yields were excellent this year. Definitely a wonderful surprise for Moser.

There’s “20 to 25 percent of corn still out in the field.” The harvest has been slowed by wet weather occurring every couple of days. While the fields are currently quiet except for manure being spread, Moser’s optimistic that with the promising forecast “we’ll get everything harvested this week.” The corn yields so far are ranging from 210 to 240 bushels per acre. “Everyone’s pretty happy with the corn yields.” Those yields are “5 to 10 bushels better on average,” compared to last year’s yields. Moser reported “a few stalk issues, but luckily there have been no huge wind events.”

The corn harvest this fall is behind the average harvest finish date. But with such strong yields, there’s excitement in the field. It may take longer to get this year’s crop combined, but the yields are making it worth the wait.

Start stop, start stop. That’s been the theme of harvest for Andy Pulk. The Land spoke with Pulk on Nov. 3 as he reported, “We’re about a quarter done with corn.” While harvest is slow going this year, he said, “Yields are exceptional.” Pulk admits the high yields in corn are a surprise. “I don’t know where it’s coming from,” Pulk said.

The corn is at 21 to 25 percent moisture, “a little wetter than I would like to see this time of year.” Rain has continued to be a constant this growing and now harvest season for Pulk. He said there’s “scattered rain showers every two days.”

That brings the total to 68 to 69 days of measurable rain on the Pulk farm since the end of May. The forecast calls for dry weather for the next seven to 10 days which will definitely help in getting the rest of corn harvested.

Even with corn left to combine, Pulk still plans on squeezing in a little time to enjoy the deer hunting opener weekend. With a robust deer population around Pulk’s farm, he’s hoping for some hunting success.

This fall has ushered in above-average temperatures which has resulted in the fact that Pulk’s “grass is still green in spots.” Green grass in November and high-yielding corn coming off the field makes this a fall to remember.

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

October 28 John Nielsen was a “little over half done with corn.” Then the rain came. On Oct. 24, 4 to 5 inches fell, putting a halt to what has been an excellent corn harvest thus far. The Land spoke with Nielsen on Oct. 28 as he reported that with that much rain some of the combining “might have to wait until it freezes.”

The corn that was harvested was “significantly better where we put fungicide,” Nielsen said. He said he is “seeing some yield reduction in some varieties due to the frost” in the spring. Overall, “It’s still a very good crop, probably the best I’ve ever had,” Nielsen said.

Unfortunately, getting back in the combine to finish the corn may have to wait a little longer as the forecast calls for “a little rain again Saturday night and Sunday.”

Depending on how much rain falls, Nielsen will try to get back in the field on Oct. 31. Nielsen knows that “We’re running out of time.” This wet weather pattern is unusual for this time of year. “It’s not normal to get this much rain, this late (in the year),” he said.

Nielsen is a deer hunter and always finds great joy in the hunt after getting all crops out of the ground. That won’t be the case this fall. While Nielsen plans on doing a little hunting this year, his mind will be focused on what’s left to harvest in the field.

Nielsen knows that the corn crop is showing “tremendous yield.” He just needs the weather to cooperate so he can finish out the 2016 harvest and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing this year’s bumper crop is safely in the bin.

Warm and dry weather allowed Minnesota farmers to continue harvest and field activities during the week ending Nov. 6, with 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Crystal Valley Co-op Crystal Valley Co-op, with 10 elevators in south central Minnesota, can handle harvest 2016, reported Jim Johnson, Crystal Valley grain merchandiser.

“Bean prices are better relative to corn so we are seeing a fair amount of bean selling. Yields are very good on beans so that gives them a little more incentive to sell,” said Johnson.

Bean yields in the mid-60s are pretty common and if it’s not in those num-

bers, it’s typically going to be better than worse, Johnson said. He added that farmers are more comfortable selling their extra especially if they only have space for 55-60 bu./acre yields.

Unfortunately, Johnson reported that Janesville, Hope and Vernon Center elevators had to reject some loads of soybeans from the Waseca area. The U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered elevators not to take grain that was flooded. In Waseca, almost 14 inches of rain fell Sept. 21 and 22.

“It came down to what they looked like and smelled like,” said Johnson.

Bob Burns, owner of Burns Sales and Service in Janesville, farms in the area. He said that there are a percentage of people along the river bottoms that suffered the most and still are not able to harvest their beans.

“We were blessed this year with growing degree units and everything got mature and ripe,” said Burns.

The co-op has 350,000 bushels of corn in a ground pile, which will be picked up by Nov. 18 to go to ethanol plants.

“We’ve got some sales. Everything is bottlenecked up,” said Mullenbach.

Mammele noted that when corn was $5, $6 and $7, many on-farm grain bins went up in the area, which holds true statewide.

“They are using bins this fall that they haven’t used in a couple years,” Mammele estimated. ❖

Land rent workshops will be held across Minnesota ST. PAUL, Minn. — A series of more than 40 meetings on fair farm rental agreements begins in early November and continues for five weeks across the state. These free meetings are provided by the University of Minnesota Extension.

Landlords, farmers, agri-business professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative meetings being held across Minnesota.

“Farmland rental rates have never been higher,” says David Bau, Extension educator in ag business management. “Following earlier records, the prices for corn and soybeans in recent years are significantly lower. Determining a fair, profitable farm rental agreement is a challenge in today’s economy.”

Bau will examine several ways to negotiate fair rental agreements that satisfy the landowner and farmer. Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends and current farmland values and sales. Examples and fact sheets will be provided, along with worksheets that look at 2017 input costs and crop prices to determine affordable rent, rate of return to the

research on Minnesota-hardy stone fruit trees, gardens built around model railroads, the saving of the Minnesota State Fair carousel (now called the Cafesjian Carousel in Como Park), the last maker of barber poles in the United States, and a champion horseshoe pitcher.

Central to all this are the farmers I have met.

Some were raisers of livestock. Others were trying new conservation measures or approaching agriculture in ways outside of conventional methods. All were excited to be working with the land and the livestock.

Some of the enjoyment of writing for The Land is the experiences that go with it, such as the story on mulberries which included an invitation to coffee and a delicious mulberry dessert. A story on the Minneota Iris Society resulted in the gift of some exquisite irises that still bloom in my garden. When I wrote of Mr. B Chocolatier, I was “forced” to sample some of their chocolates before the interview.

Then there was the time I was early for an interview in Litchfield, so I stopped in a shop. It was operated by a little lady in her 80s who painted china, and resulted in a “Back Roads” story. When I stopped back a year later, she was closing the shop and I purchased the last tea cup and saucer she had on the shelf.

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent When I wrote my first article for The Land in 1996 and got the go-ahead from the editor to do freelance work for the magazine, still submitting articles 20 years later was not an expectation. It has worked so well for so long because through a succession of editors, the magazine has remained open to diverse points of view and a variety of topics. The “Back Roads” feature has further broadened the subject matter.

The real gratification comes from all of the people I’ve had the opportunity to meet, not to mention the places visited and stories learned through writing about them. I’d be hard-pressed to pick any favorites from the over 200 articles and “Back Roads” I have submitted, but listing some stories is easy.

Livestock stories opened up a world of breeds, some of which I had not known before. There have been the draft horses: Percheron, Shire, American Cream; and others like Morgan, Tennessee Walking, and Hanoverian horses, plus donkeys and mules. There were cattle like Murray Grey, Aubrac and Dexter, and a story on bison. Then there were Targhee sheep, Kiko goats, racing pigeons, and the list goes on.

The garden issues have let me hear about raising cactus, mushrooms, garlic, hosta, day lillies, and English gardens. The history issues have let me use my interest in history to explore numerous subjects and places, not to mention all those personal tours of museums and historic sites.

It has been encouraging to write about efforts at helping recovery for redheaded woodpeckers, bluebirds, monarch butterflies, and the most successful effort, wild turkeys. Even more so was the story of the Hall family’s recovery from having their farm leveled by a tornado.

For Farm to School, MDA tours Westbrook-Walnut Grove school

By CAROLYN VAN LOH The Land Correspondent WESTBROOK, Minn. — Gov. Mark Dayton declared October as Farm to School Month. On Oct. 24, representatives from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Statewide Health Improvement Program visited Westbrook-Walnut Grove Elementary School as part of the produce program.

The school benefitted under the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation grant program.

Since produce is purchased from an area farmer under the Farm to School program, the school was eligible for an AGRI grant to buy equipment for preparing food in the noon lunch. The grant was used by the school to purchase a new steamer to prepare fresh vegetables for school lunches.

Michele Freeberg, Westbrook-Walnut Grove food service director, said that the steamer will steam 20 acorn squash in 45 minutes. “I wish I would have had this machine years ago,” she said.

Student favorite foods for lunch are squash, cucumbers and watermelon.

These vegetables are grown by Ruppert Garden Produce, operated by the Kim and Keri Ruppert family of Currie. Ruppert Garden Produce provides several homegrown vegetables for five area schools, including the Westbrook-Walnut Grove school. ❖

equipment before putting them away for winter.

Soil tools such as shovels, rakes, forks, and hoes should be washed with a heavy spray of water. Dry off the tools after cleaning. Pruners or saws should be cleaned using a disinfectant, rubbing alcohol or bleach (one part bleach to nine parts water). This is especially true when used on unhealthy plants. When trying to remove sap from the blades, carefully use some paint thinner or even a bathroom cleaning product.

Once clean, you can oil the tool using a household oil. If tools are very rusty, other remedies that have been used include soaking the blades in a strong black tea once it has cooled. This will break up the rust and allow for easier removal with a rag or steel-wired brush, steel wool, or even wax paper.

To sharpen pruners or loppers, hold the shear flat against the palm of your hand with blades facing down. Sharpen the blade with a sharpening stone at a 23 degree beveling angle. Remove any burs on the opposite side with a five degree angle. To sharpen shovels, axes or spades, use a hand file or powered grinder. Wear eye protection and use caution when sharpening all tools.

Finally, take advantage of repair shops’ slow time before they are busy with snow blowers to repair any equipment. Not only will they be happy for your business, but you will be happy next spring to have a properly operating piece of equipment.

The wood is tough and durable and was used by the Algonquian people for making snowshoes. Tamarack poles were used in making corduroy roads because of their resistance to rot. Currently the wood is used primarily for pulpwood, posts, poles, rough lumber and fuel wood.

Larches make great specimen plants for yards and gardens. Tamaracks (species of larch) are also used as landscape trees of distinction. Many cultivars have been developed that include smaller weeping trees as well as some that grow in a prostate form.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — As the days grow darker and the temperatures drop, there is still a list of yard and garden chores to complete. Don’t forget about cleaning up the garden shed — including your tools, garden products, and equipment.

Store any left-over seed in mouseproof containers. The mice will not only consume the seed as a winter food source, but chew large holes in the product’s bag allowing product to spill everywhere.

Lawn and garden fertilizers should be stored in their original bags or containers. This will allow you to know the correct content and analysis of the product next season. It is important to ensure the granular product is stored in a dry location. Granular product can even absorb moisture from the air causing the product to form a hard cake like cement. Store the product with its original label or bag in a sealable plastic container.

Storing water-based pesticides can be a bit trickier. All water-based herbicides, fungicides, and other pesticides should be stored in a location where they will not freeze. Not only are the product containers susceptible to cracking, but the products may lose its efficiency. Find a location that will not drop below freezing and properly store these products for the winter. Read the product’s label thoroughly for additional storage instructions.

Once the seed, fertilizer, and pesticides are put away, it is time to clean, sharpen, and repair your tools and

“At a public meeting, we discussed the idea of selling shares,” said Ver Steeg. “If people would purchase shares worth $250 and we could raise $25,000, we would have enough to stock the shelves and hire a manager.”

When possible, 10 percent would be paid back to the shareowners in the form of a $25 coupon to be used at the store. After 10 years, the shares would

Back in 2002, when the owners of the grocery store abruptly closed the doors, things looked pretty bleak for the town of 500.

Gene Peters, a farmer who was retiring at that time, purchased the building.

“I just couldn’t stand to see it empty,” explained Peters. “I talked to the elderly people, who indicated they really had a need for a store in town. The idea of traveling 10 miles to the nearest grocery store was not appealing, especially in the winter.”

Peters and Ver Steeg visited back and forth, collaborating on a doable fix for the problem. They shared their con-

“We eat at the deli every day,” said De Boer. “It’s a whole lot easier and cheaper than cooking for two at home.”

Hometown grocer Jennifer Stave has been the general manager since the store opened on July 7, 2003. She grew up in Little Rock and returned with a husband and twin sons at about the time the store was opening.

Jill Netten made a quick stop. She was hoping to bake cookies for her family and the town resident needed some shortening.

“It is so handy to be able to get what I need right here in town,” said Netten.

“The staff is always so friendly and helpful.”

Other customers shared a hug with a resident who had a loved one pass away that morning.

Volunteers Gene Peters and Darrell Ver Steeg unloaded a trailer of fresh produce, dairy products and canned goods.

It was a normal day for manager Jennifer Stave, who often carries the groceries to a customer’s car.

“The store does cash flow,” said Peters. “Unless there is some major problem, such as the heating system fails. Refrigeration was a big one.”

Again, the locals came to the rescue.

The Town and Country Club held fundraising dinners which helped pay half of the $30,000 needed.

Grain Outlook Corn extends downtrend

An unlikely combination of circumstances this year has surprised even those that have been in the business for decades. Producers are experiencing record or near record corn and soybean yields, very wide basis numbers and excess moisture putting a damper on harvest progress.

South American soybean and corn planting conditions and progress has been favorable for the most part. On the demand side of the equation, our grain exports have been quite strong, despite the very strong U.S. dollar, which makes it more expensive to buyers with foreign currency. Other recent factors KURT LENSING affecting the markets have been AgStar Assistant VP & Industry Specialist speculative funds willing to buy Waite Park, Minn. back a large number of corn contracts over the last month. Part of the recent soybean rally was driven by tight world ending stocks of vegetable oil.

The speculative funds helped push the rally a bit higher when adding to their bought soybean positions or “long positions.”

The most recent price rally occurred during the middle of harvest. Today the market is offering higher prices if we hold on to our grain until spring or summer. The challenge with trying to get a higher price in the future comes with logistical limitations as well. Many farmers cannot store 100 percent of their production, especially in years they produce above normal yields. If you fill up your own farm storage and need to use commercial storage, be prepared to pay a bit more. As the month of October comes to a close, the livestock markets have proven that this is still a volatile group as far as price determination. The cattle market is likely going to close higher for the month; while hogs will once again close lower for the month.

Through all of the movement during the month there seems to be a firming tone to the livestock markets as we head into the month of November.

Cattle have posted a nice rally into the final weeks of October signifying some sort of a low has formed to the market. This causes concern on how far this current price rally can last if the demand for beef does not increase in the near future. The relationships between the different meats still plays a major role to the consumer especially in the current poor economy. This will likely cause the consumer to buy the best value for the dollar which currently is not beef.

Therefore, producers should be cognizant of current market conditions and be prepared to protect inventories as needed.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Nov. 4.

CORN — Corn closed on a weak note before Halloween and extended that downtrend throughout the week on excellent harvesting weather and bushels looking for a home. A declining U.S. dollar ahead of the presidential election was largely ignored by the commodity sector. The dollar weakness was attributed to Donald Trump gaining on Hillary Clinton in the polls. The December contract closed lower for four consecutive sessions before finding support and closing higher the final two days of PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. the week.

St. Paul Weekly export sales were excellent at 58 million bushels, bringing total sales for the year to 88 percent ahead of last year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is projecting a 17.2 percent increase in year-on-year exports. Total export commitments at 974.6 million bushels are 43.8 percent of the USDA’s 2.225 billion bushel export forecast for this year.

New sales announcements this week were 744,000 metric tons, which sets us up for a good report next week.

On the ethanol side, weekly production was up 31,000 barrels per day to 1.022 million bpd, the highest level for this marketing year and the fifth highest on record. Ethanol stocks were down 200,000 barrels to 19.7 million barrels. Ethanol production usually peaks in the latter half of November, so there could be more increases yet this month. Margins are very good which would promote additional production.

Weekly bean exports reach second highest ever NYSTROM, from pg. 17 Early in the week, the USDA released its Grain Crush report for September. It showed 435 million bushels of corn went into ethanol production during the month, up 2.1 percent from last year.

A well-followed private firm refreshed their crop estimates for next week’s November World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. They came in at 174.0 bushels per acre for a crop of 15.109 billion bushels. This compares with the October USDA number of 173.4 bu./acre and a crop of 15.057 billion bushels.

The market took the figures in stride.

The average trade corn guesses for the Nov. 9 WASDE report are: 173.2 bu./acre vs. 173.4 last month, production 15.041 billion bushels vs. 15.057 billion last month, ending stocks 2.3 billion bushels vs. 2.32 billion last month, and world ending stocks 216.9 million metric tons vs. 216.8 mmt last month.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange in Argentina pegged its corn planting at 38.7 percent complete, just ahead of last year’s 36 percent pace. The Federal Reserve concluded a two-day meeting this week. No interest rate increase was announced, but none was expected. They did hint of the possibility of an increase in December.

OUTLOOK: December corn has skated between $3.36.5 and $3.59.25 since Oct. 4. Once the Nov. 9 report is behind us, we’ll see if we can stretch the trading range or just revisit the lower end as harvest winds down. For the week, December corn crumbled 6.25 cents to settle at $3.48.75 per bushel, July was 4.25 cents lower at $3.72.5, and December 2017 dropped 3.25 cents to $3.87 per bushel.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans extended their downtrend with just 13 percent of the harvest left to be completed as of Oct. 30. Anyone expecting fund buying to jump start the month was sorely disappointed. Demand has helped underpin weakness, but with the Nov. 9 crop report ahead, traders’ ideas turned to the likelihood of a higher yield being published. The biggest October to November yield increase was 1.5 bu./acre in 2012. An increase in the export line could help offset a production gain, but the possibility of a bigger carryout lurks in the shadows.

As in corn, weekly export sales were over 60 percent higher than expected.

Weekly sales at 92.4 million bushels was the biggest weekly total since October 2013 and the second highest on record! This brings total commitments for this year to 1.327 billion

Do the math on carry cost LENSING, from pg. 15 advanced on unpriced grain. Many grain elevators or end users of corn will have minimum storage fees and are about 15-20 cents per bushel until year end, and 3-5 cents a month after that. If we are looking to carry corn into July, we might be looking at paying nearly 50 cents a bushel to “carry” or hold grain for eight months of the year.

To figure your “cost to carry,” multiply the current futures price times the days to hold divided by 365. Multiply that number times the interest rate. Add that number to the number of days divided by 365 times 12 times the monthly storage rate. When deciding to hold onto grain the expected returns need to outweigh the costs.

In many cases, on-farm storage is a very economical way to capture higher prices in deferred months — especially in years with large crops.

Typically, the market pays more to hold large crops since the demand pipeline is full at harvest. On-farm storage can pay you back in the form

bushels or 65.5 percent of the USDA’s 2.025 billion bushel export outlook. New sales announced this week included 456,000 metric tons for old crop and 60,000 metric tons for new crop. Will we see the USDA increase the export category on next week’s balance sheet? Without significant weather problems in South America, we need to front-end load our export program. As of Nov. 2, Brazil’s soybean planting was 41 percent complete or 10 percent ahead of last year. In the top producing Mato Grosso region, the soybean planting was estimated at 80.3 percent, which would be the fastest on record. The USDA attaché in Brazil is projecting Brazil’s soybean production at 101 mmt, down 1 mmt from the October USDA forecast. The September Oilseed Crush report from the USDA during the week showed 138.8 million bushels of soybeans were crushed. This was a 2.7 percent increase from last September.

Recently we have seen China purchase Brazilian soybeans for the December/January time frame, a time frame we usually own. China has committed to 19.4 mmt compared to 14.9 mmt last year, but this year’s number is below both 2013 and 2014 for this same time. The USDA’s attaché in China has a similar outlook for their soybean needs as the official USDA number. The attaché predicts China’s 2016-17 soybean imports at 86 mmt, in line with the USDA. Of the total, 30 mmt is expected to be sourced from the United States.

A well-respected private consulting firm updated its crop outlook. They pegged the soybean yield at 52.4 bu./ acre and the crop at 4.353 billion bushels. The USDA in October was using 51.4 bushels per acre and 4.269 billion bushels. I don’t believe anyone

of higher basis levels (estimated 20-30 cents per bushel basis improvement), plus another 20-25 cents per bushel increase in the futures prices for deferred months.

OUTLOOK: Fund selling was a factor in this week’s move lower as money flowed away from commodities. Weakness in the energy markets was a negative input as index money is weighted toward energy. As energy declines, index money pulls out, which in turn affects agricultural commodities. Good demand helped limit the downside, but we’ll need that to continue to avoid a washout. From a technical standpoint, January soybeans found support at the 50 percent retracement level from the September low to the October high this week near $9.85.5 per bushel. Without a significant weather problem in South America, it will be tough to revisit the $10.31 recent high anytime soon. The $10.00 psychological level will act as first resistance ahead of the USDA report with support at the 62 percent retracement level of $9.75 per bushel. For the week, January soybeans dropped 21.25 cents to $9.90.75 per bushel, July tumbled 19.75 cents to $10.08.75, and November 2017 fell 11.75 cents to $9.82.5 per bushel. The December meal dove $8.50 per ton to $309.00 and oil fell .70 to 34.71.

Nystrom’s Notes: Contract changes for the week ending Nov. 4: December Chicago wheat gained 5.75 cents, Kansas City managed a .25 cent increase while Minneapolis plunged 14.25 cents lower. December crude oil skidded $4.63 lower to $44.07 per barrel, ULSD dropped a dime, RBOB was 7.5 cents lower and natural gas plunged 33.5 cents lower. ❖

Hog market stabilizes TEALE, from pg. 15 The hog market appears to be stabilizing over the past several weeks as cash prices have fluctuated back and forth in the lower $50 area basis lean.

The futures market, which has been a very discounted market, has responded with a decent rally to close these deep discounts the past few weeks. At these current cash prices, the supply of hogs and the demand for pork seem to be temporarily at an equilibrium.

The fact that the USDA Cold Storage report indicated that the pork in stor-

age is greater than analysts anticipated may have a factor on prices in the weeks ahead. Demand for pork has remained fairly stable which has been the major factor in the stabilization of cash prices in the last half of the month of October. It would appear that if the hog prices are to rally from these levels at the current time, demand for pork products will have to increase both domestically and from exports.

Producers should continue to watch market conditions and protect inventories if and when opportunities arise. ❖

Halloween week ended with cash block cheddar at $1.90 per pound, up 17 cents on the week and 20 cents above a year ago. The cheddar barrels started the week by jumping 13.75 cents. This is the largest single-day gain since July 31, 2008, when barrel cheese rallied 15 cents, reports FC Stone. The barrels finished Nov. 4 at $1.86, which was up 26.25 cents on the week and 21 cents above year ago, with only three cars of block trading hands on the week and 16 of barrel. The blocks have gained 35 cents in three weeks and the barrels have gained 40 cents.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski asked in his Nov. 1 Early Morning Update: “If the spot market is an inventory management tool of last resort, does it really care about where the lion’s share of buyers covered holiday needs? No, the spot market only cares about the last guy. How much does he need and what price is he willing to pay? We’re about to find out.”

Dairy Market News reports that Midwest cheese output is “strong and many manufacturers are using all the milk available to them. A few processors are surprised the milk supply is not a little heavier.

Some contacts mention they could run a few more loads, but are having trouble finding available milk.

Industry contacts note an increase in cheese orders.

Sales seem to be picking up as the fourth quarter holidays draw closer. Inventories are generally comfortable. But, in some cases, blocks are a little tighter due to the seasonal increase in demand.”

CME cash butter, after jumping 16.5 cents the previous week, closed Nov. 4 at $1.8925 per pound. This is down 3.25 cents on the week and 99.25 cents below a year ago. On the week, 21 cars traded hands.

Class II processors are pulling “significant cream volumes,” reports Dairy Market News, but butter churning “remains active in the Central region.”

“Most production schedules are centered on print butter as retailers’ orders increase along seasonal patterns. Food service demand is fair to good.”

Western producers report butter is moving well, says Dairy Market News. “Demand for retail butter is seasonally heavy and helping draw down inventories. Cream is in good supply and manufacturers are not opposed to buying a few extra loads of cream to keep production at or near full capacity.”

Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk climbed to 89 cents per pound on Nov. 2, but then retreated and closed Nov. 4 at 84.75 cents per pound. The price finished down 0.75 cents on the week and 4.25 cents above a year ago. On the week, 11 carloads traded hands.

■ A higher All-Milk price and lower feed costs pushed the milk feed price ratio higher for the fourth consecutive month. The September ratio is 2.47, up from 2.42 in August and compares to 2.23 in September 2015, according to the USDA’s latest Ag Prices report.

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. One pound of milk today purchases 2.47 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

NMPF calls for immigration reform, TPP passage The Daily Dairy Report says the dairy Margin Protection Program margin for September is $9.49, up $1.06 from the July-August 2016 margin of $8.43. It says, “The October margin will retreat but not enough to pull the September-October average margin below the maximum MPP coverage of $8 per cwt.”

■ Dairy industry leaders and producers met this week in Nashville for the joint annual meeting of the National Milk Producers Federation, Dairy Management Incorporated and United Dairy Industry Association.

A NMPF press release stated President Jim Mulhern “Commemorated the centennial of one of Washington’s leading agriculture policy groups by ensuring that its commitments have not altered, and that NMPF plans to continue its aggressive dedication to issues like animal care, economics, trade and nutrition.”

“The dairy farming landscape, and the world outside of it, have changed considerably,” Mulhern began. “The numbers of farms have shrunk, the world marketplace has become more competitive, and consumers are becoming increasingly interested

Mulhern called for immigration reform and pledged to “seek opportunities for dairy all over the world, including pushing for passage of free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, strengthening export assistance programs like CWT, and holding countries accountable for protectionist behavior.” He also praised “the growing momentum that is changing consumer perceptions on the role of fat in a healthy diet.”

California’s All Milk average of $15.74, was down 22 cents from August, 2 cents above a year ago, but the lowest in the United States. Wisconsin’s price, at $17.90, was down a dime from August, dead even with a year ago, and $2.16 above California’s.

September corn averaged $3.22 per bushel, up a penny from August, but 46 cents per bushel below September 2015. Soybeans averaged $9.43 per bushel, down 50 cents from August, but 38 cents per bushel above September 2015. Alfalfa hay averaged $137 per ton, down $1 from August, and $23 per ton below a year ago.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger, the report shows the September cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $74.50/cwt. This is down $6.10 from August, $29.50/cwt. below September 2015, but $2.90 above the 2011 base average of $71.60/cwt.

Quarterly prices received for milk cows averaged $1,690 per head in October, down $40 from July and $290 below October 2015.

Debate in consumer circles centers on GMO (genetically modified organism) versus non-GMO cattle production.

“When people ask me, ‘Which is better, grass-fed or grain-fed beef?’ I always say, ‘Whichever you like best should be your choice. I say the same about GMO versus non-GMO. We know the GMO product is a safe product,” she said.

With the Minnesota Beef Council, Rhoads coordinates and works trade shows and directs the communication with the beef retail and foodservice partners. She also attends the Cattlemen’s meetings.

“I get the best of both worlds because I work with our producers who make such awesome products,” Rhoads said. “And I work with grocery stores and chefs who do such good work in promoting our product.”

Arena Trailer Sales hasn’t been at the Beef Expo for six or seven years, but Kusilek heard the event was growing so they came back to the show. The first day brought lots of interest.

“We’ve had lots of lookers and quite a few wanting the time and sales pitch on some of our rigs. It’s looking to be a good show for us,” he said.

Good livestock trailers cost on average $19,700, noted Kusilek. Prices can range from highs of $150,000 to budget trailers at $3,500. Aluminum is the material that helps keep trailers lightweight. With a polished finish and custom painting, Arena Trailer Sales can provide a sweet unit.

“A lot of what we do in trailer sales these days deals in cosmetics. Everybody wants to look good going down the road. When you pull into events like this Beef Expo, you want to look nice,” said Kusilek.

As is often the request these days, special sleeping quarters in the front section can be provided.

“Right now, trailers with the living quarters sections are about 45 percent of our total business,” Kusilek said. “So as you can see, trailers for your special horse or cattle very often include special accommodations for you too.”

Eight Minnesota FFA members participated in the pre-convention delegate committee process. Make your own music

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

I

n most celebratory venues, BYOB means bring your own beverage. However, in New London, Minn., along the Crow River, BYOB could mean bring your own bench.

Just below the Mill Pond Dam is a large eggshaped sculpture, some smaller sculptures, benches and two covered pianos. There is no piano bench so set yours down and pull the heavy beige piano covers off. Under the drab covers you’ll find pianos that are so wildly colorful that you will believe a wandering band of Merry Pranksters briefly liberated them before returning them to the good citizens of New London.

Now, pull your bench up close to the keyboard, sit

down and play a few chords.

The pianos are in surprisingly good tune although the keyboards, like the Velveteen Rabbit, are well loved. The pedals work well too.

Okay, now do what you’ve always wanted to do — perform Gershwin’s “American in Paris” to the accompaniment of a waterfall. You don’t need an audience or you can invite hundreds. It’s up to you.

That’s the way it is all along the Mill Pond Music Trail.

Calling it a trail is perhaps an exaggeration; but if you walk south, past the pretty quonset building on the west side of the pond, and turn into Holm Park, you’ll see two large xylophones down near the band shell.

The two xylophones each sound slightly different and are mounted on separate pedestals next to each other.

Each has two mallets. They are both made by Freenotes Harmony Park and are topquality outdoor instruments that appear largely indestructible (although there are signs saying “No Climbing”).

Facing the Mill Pond, anybody can improvise a solo or, with a partner, a duet.

The next instruments are at the beach on the park’s south side. You can see the beach from Holm Park; but to get there you’ll need to walk, or drive, a quarter of a mile through a pleasant residential area. At the beach are five brightly-colored conga drums of different sizes. There are also two more xylophones which are shaped differently and sound differently than the Holm Park xylophones.

Finally, on the west side of the bridge over the Crow River are seven huge chimes. I love these because you can strike them with a mallet and feel them vibrate through your whole body as they gong over the pond.

The Mill Pond Music Trail was dedicated in September and is part of the Riverspace Project. ❖
