Letter: Do your legislators support Minn. agriculture?

To the Editor: We want to share with you the Grow MN Food Plan, a forward-looking set of policies to support key farm, food and agriculture issues in Minnesota.

The Grow MN Food Plan is the key component of an effort to elevate voter and legislative candidate awareness and generate broader support for policies that will protect and grow Minnesota’s farm and food economy — the state’s second-largest economic sector supporting nearly 400,000 jobs in both the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota.

We believe voters should care about the Grow MN Food Plan because of the essential role farms and food production plays in their lives. Minnesota farmers and food producers are largely responsible for the quality food consumed on a daily basis. The market value of food and farm products sold in Minnesota each year is about $21.3 billion, according to the

most recent U.S. Department of Agriculture’s census of agriculture.

The elements of the Grow MN Food Plan are: support all good farms (large or small, rural or urban, conventional or organic); more research for better food and improved farm practices; smarter regulation to make Minnesota more competitive with other states; economic, workforce and transportation policies to help rural Minnesota grow; and strategies to address all issues related to water quality.

The Grow MN Food Plan is managed by an umbrella organization called A Greater Minnesota, which is a coalition of food, farming and agriculturerelated interests working to develop support for issues to help Minnesota gain a competitive advantage in the global food economy.

Letter: Gov. Dayton should realize impact of orders To the Editor: In the Sept. 9 issue of The Land, there is reference made to Minnesota Gov. Dayton’s buffer plan and his executive order regarding neonicotinoid insecticides.

When I first heard of the buffer issue, I read that 180,000 acres would be taken out of production. More recent estimates are of about 110,000 acres. No matter the total, these acres are being mandated to come out of grain production without compensa-

tion to the owners. Another state “land grab.”

In the article about the insecticide, it is stated that “education is the key” and “enforcement is the last tool.”

I would suggest that education start with the Governor … by having him pass the certified applicator test. And hopefully, understand that executive orders be reserved for those that have a concept of their impact.

Big Food immune to livestock’s bleak future

None of this is news. Big Food has been moving in on American farmers and ranchers for decades.

Indeed, many farm and ranch groups encouraged the move as a logical next step in “modern food production” because it promised better profit with less risk.

Now however, it’s delivering dead and near-dead cash markets, waves of cheap imports, sustained low prices, and years of sector-shattering losses.

And too, deafening silence from the farm and ranch groups who pushed these “supply chain” links as the “future.”

When they do speak now, however, it’s usually to blame today’s market collapse on vegans, vegetarians, and the Humane Society of the United States.

Since they’re wrong on the origin of today’s sickness, no one should expect them to be right about its cure.

Motorists should watch for debris dropped by trucks hauling their crops. It is safer to brake or drive through debris than to veer into oncoming traffic or off the road. Wait for a safe place to pass. It is important to be patient. Wear seat belts and drive with headlights on at all times.

Farm equipment operators should use lights and flashers to make equipment more visible. Use slowmoving vehicle emblems on equipment traveling less than 30 mph. Consider using a follow vehicle when moving equipment, especially at night. Remove bean or corn heads when traveling down the roadway if it is too wide to stay within your lane and the shoulder unless you have a proper pilot car.

ROCHESTER, Minn. — With harvest in full swing, the Minnesota State Patrol reminds farmers that precautions may be needed when transporting machinery on public roads. According to Sgt. Troy Christianson of the State Patrol, farm equipment may be driven or towed to the left of the center of a roadway only if it is escorted by a vehicle displaying hazard warning lights that are visible in normal sunlight. The escort vehicle must be located in front of the farm equipment and the equipment must not extend into the left half of the roadway more than is necessary.

If the farm equipment does not have an escort, they are required to remove the header and tow it on the highway.

Oak family recalls 40 years of ag

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor Le Center, Minn. — When Andy Oak graduated from Le Center High School in 1985, nobody wanted to be a farmer. It was the height of the farm crisis, but since kindergarten Andy knew he wanted to be a farmer. Andy wasn’t even in school yet when his dad propped him up on their John Deere 60 and let him drive. Andy’s son, James Oak, got to drive the JD combine at age 10.

“It’s something in your blood. I don’t know any other way of life. I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else,” said Andy.

Still Andy has always worked off farm. From 1988 to 2000, he welded for Distel Grain in Le Sueur. In 2000, he began doing more concrete work for his brother’s masonry company and still does so. It all adds to the bottom line, said Andy. Today Oak Farms grows 2,100 acres of corn and beans near the small town of St. Thomas. They do custom planting, combining and spraying for area producers. Andy is also a Dupont Pioneer Seed dealer, a role he took over from his father, Jim Oak. The seed dealership is celebrating 40 years.

At age 24, Andy’s son, James, also works in the family farm and has been doing so his whole life.

After graduating from New Prague High School in 2011, he followed in his dad’s footsteps and went to South Central College in North Mankato. Andy earned a degree in production agriculture in 1987; James earned a degree in agribusiness in 2013.

Jim Oak, Andy’s dad, didn’t grow up on a farm. He grew up in Iowa but lived in town where his dad managed a shoe store. His mom’s family lost their farm during The Depression. When Jim was a freshman in high school, he lived and worked for a couple on a nearby farm. He moved to Minnesota and worked as a hired man until he was 30 when he rented acres and started his own farm just west of

The Land was looking for three generations of readers who could comment on the changes in farming since 1976. We found the Oak family who farm near Le Center, Minn., and call the small town of St. Thomas home. The three generations are Jim, Andy and James Oak. St. Peter. He paid $35 an acre in 1971!

In 1974, he moved into the homeplace across the field from where he lives today. Andy bought that 120 acre farm from his mom and dad in 1989.

Now another change. Jim and his wife, Joan, are moving off the farm and James and his girlfriend Christine Fredin are moving into their grandparents’ home. The two are starting their own family.

“I think they’ll let me come out and help,” said Jim. “I kinda enjoy it now because I don’t have to sign the notes and write the checks.”

Oak Farms survived the Farm Crisis of the 1980s.

Jim bought a farm in 1979 and made the last payment 20 years later. He said there was too much debt and sadly he lost one farm during that period.

“Tough times, but you work through them,” said Jim. “Right now, it’s tough times because of the market.”

Life goes on no matter the economy. Andy married Barb, his high school sweetheart. Andy said he had a crappy pick-up truck and $1,200 in the bank when they married. It wasn’t easy, but he was motivated.

The farm had livestock, cows and steers, then. They milked Holstein cows until 1994. Before Andy went to work and after he came home, he milked. They had beef cattle until 2004.

“You either had to get bigger or get out,” said Andy.

Like Andy, Barb also works offfarm for Nesbit Agencies in Belle Plaine. James works full time for Busch Brothers Machining in New Prague. The company is flexible during planting and harvesting and James puts in extra hours Andy Oak when they are not busy in the fields.

It takes all three Oak men to run the farm. Andy has taken on the role of managing and marketing and that’s fine by Jim. “I wouldn’t sell grain ’til I had a land or equipment payment,” said Jim. Andy reads The Land and all farm publications to stay current. He knows that if you don’t treat farming like a business you won’t be in business long. He has a farm management analyst and a marketing consultant and follows a grain marketing plan.

“It’s extremely high risk. It’s a challenge like no other because you never know the prices or the weather,” said Andy.

When James was in high school, he farmed 235 acres on his own. At age 21, he bought a 120-acre farm.

James has been watching and learning from his father and grandpa his whole life to prepare for his role as partner in Oak Farms.

“Dad has always challenged me James Oak to do stuff,” said James. In fact, James has done most of the planting since high school and knows what needs to be done in every season.

“If I was no longer here, I’d trust the farm would go on with James,” said Andy.

While both James and Andy have learned from Jim, they have tweaked some of their operations along the way.

“You gotta be willing to let them jump in and make decisions,” said Jim. Come harvest, they will put in the long hours. One year it was 16 Jim Oak hours a day for 38 days straight.

“Out there when it’s farming time — it doesn’t bother me. It’s all the hard work beforehand. That’s the time you enjoy it,” said James.

Advances In the last 20 years, Andy has witnessed major increases in crop potential. As a Dupont Pioneer Seed dealer, he sells both genetically modified organism and non-GMO seed, but he emphasizes it’s not about one or the other. “It’s flat out genetics. Even with non-GMO, you do have some genetic advantage,” said Andy.

Today’s seeds can grow plants that are resistant to drought, cold weather, disease, pests and more. In

October 9 Harvest is long days and longer nights. Add in a vicious cold, and Joan Lee had to take some welldeserved days off to get better and hopefully soon get back to finishing harvest. The Land spoke with Lee’s husband Mark on Oct. 9 as he was waiting for the rest of the organic soybeans to be ready to combine.

Lee already finished the conventional bean harvest. The crop this year was, “not too bad” though there were a “few drowned- out spots.”

With average temperatures forecasted for the week, Lee was optimistic he could attempt to combine the rest of the organic beans by the end of the week.

Lee chopped all but 15 acres of corn, and hopes to have the rest of the corn combined before the start of deer hunting. In the meantime, “I need to empty my (manure) pits.” Lee is also working on spreading hog manure onto organic ground.

The leaves are falling on the Lee farm and the mornings have become chillier lately, the thermometer this morning was 33 F with a “good frost on the ground.” Lee’s happy that the end of harvest is in sight, how close it actually is remains to be seen.

Andy Pulk, Roseau, Minn.

October 6 The soybean harvest is over half complete for Andy Pulk and so far “some beans are very good, some beans are very poor.” The Land spoke with Pulk on Oct. 6 as he was taking a break from bean harvest due to wet field conditions. He was optimistic the harvest would resume “hopefully this weekend.” The bean yields at this point are “below long term average,” he reported. Pulk believes that the yields are a result of “way too much moisture for way too long.”

While waiting for field conditions to improve, Pulk is “getting rid of last year’s sunflowers.” He plans to be done hauling by Oct. 7.

The corn has “pretty much all black layered.” Due to the wet conditions, he said, “I know we got one field that’s going to be terrible.” Pulk plans on starting to combine corn Oct. 15 to Oct. 20 and he said they are “going to drag our feet to see if we can get the corn dried in the field.” Pulk said he believes that this year’s corn is “going to be an exceptional crop.”

The wet fields have made Pulk concerned about getting tillage complete. “Hopefully we won’t get any more rain so we can get some corn tillage done. If we don’t, it’s a really bad thing going into next year,” he said.

Wet conditions have been a challenge throughout harvest, but with possible high-yielding corn out in the field, a little moisture isn’t going to stop Pulk from getting in the combine and getting that corn.

Note: Lee wants to say “hi” to an old college friend, Al from Glenwood, Minn., who jokes that he doesn’t have to call Lee to find out how things are going anymore; he just opens the latest issue of The Land to get that information.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa October 14 “Harvest is still moving along.” The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Oct. 14 as he reported there’s been “delays with some weather.”

There’s “still 20 percent of the beans left in the field,” which makes this year’s harvest later than usual. “Typically, we’ve got bean harvest wrapped up by now,” he said. The beans’ moisture content still at “14 to 13 percent.” It’s been “hard to dry them out.” With good weather expected today and tomorrow, Moser believes that bean harvest will be wrapped up soon. “We’ve had a few delays, but that’s to be expected.”

The corn “definitely has some stalk issues.” The moisture level is between 18 to 21 percent. The time is now to get the corn off the field and Mosher is ready to get that done.

Along with harvest, Moser’s currently winterizing his sprayer as the temperature has already gotten down to 24 F overnight. He’ll also be “focusing on getting bales put up and getting manure out.” Though “getting corn out is the major focus.”

“We don’t need any more rain, the ground is pretty moist,” he said. Even with those kinds of field conditions, harvest continues to move on and the hope remains for a solid corn crop to go along with the strong yields seen this year for soybeans.

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

The 2016 soybean harvest is finished for John Nielsen and now it’s all about the corn. The Land spoke with Nielsen on Oct. 13 as he reported that he began combining corn on Oct. 10. The corn “looks like it’s going to be a very good crop.” There’s “lots of loads (of corn) out there,” Nielsen said.

Harvest has been going mostly well. “We’ve been stuck a few times, it’s one of those falls,” he said. The weather is cooperating; though the ground is still wet in some places. Nielsen’s goal is to wrap up corn harvest “before the first of November.” There are also hogs to haul and chores around the farm still left to do this fall.

The soybean harvest finished up around Sept. 30 for Nielsen after a wet start. Before that, they had “a week to 10 days of 70 degree weather” that helped to get the bean harvest complete. It also “helps that some of the fields are tiled well.” The soybean “yields were very good.”

With the corn harvest in full swing and bean harvest complete, both so far resulting in strong yields, this fall is shaping up to be a mighty good one on the Nielsen farm.

“It bothers me that anybody should go to bed hungry,” Andy said.

Jim prefers old country music. And a neighboring farmer just shakes his head in disbelief, but it’s all in good fun.

During the Super Cycle of 2006 to 2012 when grain prices were roughly $7 for corn and $15 for soybeans, it wasn’t all good. Andy noted production costs were up as fuel prices spiked between 2008 and 2012 and livestock producers dealt with high feed prices.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Rural Finance Authority has lowered its interest rate on the Disaster Loan program to zero percent to help farmers cover the costs to replace and repair items lost or damaged due to flooding and not covered by insurance.

As with other RFA loans, the Disaster Loan program will be available for farmers through their existing agricultural lenders to finance these repairs. The loans can be used to help clean up, repair, or replace farm structures and to replace seed, other crop inputs, feed, and livestock. The loan

I took some aspirin before I even left the house, for the headache I knew was coming.

Probably the most mystifying of all languages for the farm family is my husband’s hand gestures to indicate what should be done next. He says he’ll do “this” when he wants you to do (this), and he’ll do “that” when he wants you to do (that). And in the thick of things, he makes some gesture that I’ve never seen before, and when I try to outguess him, it’s usually not the option he would have chosen.

Luckily, I have just the right hand gesture for him if he has frustrated me too, and the meaning of the gesture that I’ve communicated is quite clear.

Women may use twice as many words in a day than men do (as some scientist with nothing better to do has determined), but maybe there’s a reason.

We’re used to having to say twice as much to get the point across to people who don’t always listen or take us seriously.

And besides, hand gestures simply aren’t very lady-like sometimes.

Though he grew up singing with his family, and though he was a member of a contest-winning band as a teen, Bill Anderson dreamed of playing baseball. That was a normal goal in life for a city boy from a mostly financially-comfortable small family.

In other words, none of the things Anderson would sing about in years to come.

Music was always one of Anderson’s loves. So when his baseball career fizzled, Anderson turned to radio — working as a DJ in the early days of rock & roll. He liked that new music, but his passion for “hillbilly” tunes got him kindly fired. Anderson was directed to a new country/western station in Commerce, Ga. — a blessing which was exactly what he needed.

During this time, Anderson continued playing his

Suddenly, Anderson was a singer-songwriter and had landed a contract with Decca Records. Told that, “my job was to get busy writing some new songs,” he ultimately flew to Nashville and recorded them. He then threw together his own two-piece band, began touring and sang his way to stardom.

But all good things must come to an end and no star can shine forever. When Anderson’s music career faltered, he tried his hand at television, restauranteering, and owning a radio station. He kept his fingers in country music, but he says, “I felt like a relic.”

And then his hairdresser gave him a life-changing phone number…

If it’s true that you can’t be a writer without being a storyteller, then author Bill Anderson has that sewn up. “Whisperin’ Bill Anderson” is so filled with easy tales that you’ll feel like you just pulled up a chair by a dear old friend.

While I was eager to read more about his personal life (which is somewhat lacking here), what I found was more than satisfying. Anderson has a gentle, playful sense of humor which shines in his best memories.

But this isn’t entirely a happy-happy book.

Readers also see the not-so-sunny sides of a fledgling (and racist) recording industry; of touring, before investors got involved; and of being an older star in a “new century.”

While anyone can read this book, I think fans of old-time country music will love it best because it contains all the tales you’ll want to know. For you, start “Whisperin’ Bill Anderson,” and you’ll be hooked before long.

By CAROLYN VAN LOH The Land Correspondent When the topic of agriculture history comes up, it’s easy for the mind to skip back to the 19th century when pioneers homesteaded and broke sod. We forget that anything which happened yesterday, a month ago, 10, 20 or more years ago is also history.

This correspondent was privileged to obtain a Jan. 10, 1986, edition of The Land which just happened to be a history issue focusing on barns, farmhouses, silos and grain storage structures. A two-page ad for 31 John Deere dealers scattered across southern Minnesota was printed with the appropriate shades of green and yellow. The cover of a 16-page insert, “1985 Minnesota Harvest Report,” sported sky-blue ink in the background. All other pages were black and white. The Dekalb-Pfizer Genetics pages featured photos of 10 district sales managers and five men involved in research for the company.

This article’s title headlined the “In My Opinion” guest editorial by Roy W. Meyer of Mankato State University. He expressed his opinion on the fate of round barns which were popular in the late 19th century and into the early 20th century. When the machine

The story on Tina Anderson Richards’ printmaking appeared in the Jan. 10, 1986 edition of The Land. age replaced horses, the machinery wasn’t compatible with round buildings. Meyers’ conclusion is as current today as it was when it was written: Unless there is some such upswelling of public sentiment in favor of preserving a building of architectural or historical significance, ... it is likely sooner or later to be torn down.

Artist still works in photography, weaving, printmaking

Tina Anderson Richards, featured in the story, is still busy using her creative talents several ways at her farm home in Murray County, Minnesota.

Richards grew up in and still lives in the Walnut Grove area. Ann Miller, 1986 contributing writer, quoted Richards, “Barns are my work and my joy — not just an interest.” Barns are still one of the artist’s interests, as well as weaving and printmaking.

Photographic prints began with 35 mm film 30 years ago, but today Richards uses a digital camera for the first step. Her goal is to produce black-andwhite prints from her colored pencil artwork. Transferring the photo to Photoshop software enables her to intensify some of the colors so the black and white print will reflect the shading contrasts. Printmaking is basically the same as it was in the 1986 photo.

When she’s not busy working on her art projects, Richards is teaching photography and art at Westbrook Walnut Grove High School. Walnut Grove is home to Hmong families who emigrated from Laos or Thailand, and Richards has added the Hmong story cloth to her creative activities.

The fabric wallhanging contains a series of small images embroidered on the background with colorful threads. Each figure represents a segment of family history. Richards designed a story cloth which tells her grandmother’s story, going back four generations. She drew it out on the fabric and asked Hmong women to embroider the design with embroidery floss she furnished.

Richards plans to preserve a small portion of a Hmong family’s history with a book in which she will

write the narrative and set the lettering, reminiscent of the now-obsolete newspaper type setting.

She will then draw the illustrations and print them herself.

Miller concluded her 1986 article by saying Richard’s long-term goal was to write a book about just one barn and to do every page herself. Richards affirmed that she still sees that book in her future.

The 40-page paper contained pictures of rectangular and round barns constructed with logs, bricks, clay blocks and wood planks. Photos of hog houses and chicken houses no longer used on the modern 1986 farm brought back memories of older farms. A couple photos of steel and aluminum buildings were a contrast to the historical structures.

Audrey Kletscher Helbling from Redwood County shared memories of growing up in a farm home built in the late 1800s.

The accompanying picture of the writer and three of her four siblings in front of the house when they were youngsters is typical of posed photos from another era of time. They moved into a new house across the driveway in 1968. She wrote: “The fiveroom house with attached porch didn’t seem crowded when I was growing up there ... But when I see the little flower bed that marks the foundation of the old house, I realize just how small that house was.”

Art history “Back Roads” stories didn’t appear until 2003, but a story on the back page of the January 1986 issue would be found on a “Back Roads” page in 2016.

The analysis by Informa Economics warns, “The European farm policy agenda, which is focused on using geographical indications to unfairly grant European food producers a huge commercial advantage, would force farmers and food producers outside of Europe to rebrand familiar foods with unfamiliar names,” according to the analysis. “The resulting confusion in the U.S. domestic marketplace could shutter family farms, eliminate thousands of rural jobs and hurt the overall U.S. economy.”

“The EU advocates extending GI protections beyond a small number of specialty foods to cover many food names that have little to no geographic identity and have long been commonly used by food producers around the world,” the press release stated. “At today’s prices, the decline in U.S. cheese

consumption due to the loss of common food names could amount to $2.3 billion in lost sales in three years, and $5.2 billion in 10 years. It could push dairy farm balance sheets below the break-even point for six out of 10 future years, costing farmers a cumulative $59 billion in revenue and forcing several thousand family dairy farms out of business, the analysis added. Several members of Congress and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack also reacted to the analysis.

■ USDA again offered to purchase up to $20 million of cheese this week to “provide assistance to U.S. dairy farmers.” This is in addition to the $20 million announced in August, but FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski says details have yet to be ironed out. He says, “The larger question will be what the spec of that cheese will be. During the previous round of government buying back in September, the Commodity Credit Corporation only spent $7 million of the proposed $20 million. Part of that had to do with the spec of cheese as the call was for ‘consumer ready’ cheese, which presented some challenges to would-be sellers. The announcement this week simply said ‘cheddar cheese’ and that leaves a lot to be discussed when the solicitation is officially sent out in the coming weeks.”

■ There’s good news on the feed front. USDA’s Crop Production report forecasts corn production at 15.1 billion bushels. This is up 11 percent from last year, but down slightly from the September forecast.

Based on Oct. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 173.4 bushels per acre. This is down a bushel from the September forecast, but up five from 2015. If realized, this will be the highest yield and production on record for the United States.

Soybean production is forecast at a record 4.27 billion bushels. This is up 2 percent from September and up 9 percent from last year. Based on Oct. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average a record 51.4 bu./acre, which is up 0.8 bushel from last month and up 3.4 bushels from last year.

Cotton production is forecast at 16.0 million 480pound bales, down less than 1 percent from September, but up 24 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 797 pounds per harvested acre, which is up 31 pounds from last year.

■ Dairy prices continued sliding the second week of October. Cash block cheddar sunk to $1.5175 per pound; but regained 3.25 cents on Oct. 14, closing at $1.55. The price remained unchanged on the week, but 11.5 cents below a year ago. The barrels dipped to $1.4475, but inched back a 1.25 cents on Oct. 14 to $1.46. This is 5 cents lower on the week, 18 cents below a year ago, and a larger-than-normal 9 cents below the blocks. Three cars of block traded hands on the week and 19 of barrel.

This year, the Ten Napels were concerned about the high heat during pollination time.

But from the looks of the crop, that appears to have been an unnecessary fear. There are plenty of pumpkins out there for families who like to go to the field to pick their own.

The Ten Napels both are employed off-farm, so Diane works around her schedule to host groups and schools during the week. The students who come from city schools greet Diane with a hug as they remember her from last year. They look forward to eating their sack lunches outside and visiting the farm. For some, it is the only time they leave the city, said Ten Napel.

The reward for all of the Ten Napels’ hard work is not financial, as Diane readily admits the hours of weeding and spraying cannot be recouped.

But the reward is in the smiles of children who come to the farm and experience fresh air and the safety of running in sunshine. For some that live in the city, this is their only opportunity to experience that freedom. ❖

At the halfway mark in the month of October, the livestock markets for the most part are still under pressure. The bearish sentiment is much stronger for the cattle market at this point than it is for the hog market. Both markets have weak fundamentals as well as being oversold technically, which does not necessarily mean that long-term lows for either market are imminent at this juncture.

Cattle have been under heavy liquidation in all areas including the live inventory of cattle as well as the boxed beef and the futures market. The month of October has seen prices in all of these areas move to lows not seen in JOE TEALE years.

Broker The lack of demand for beef is Great Plains Commodity Afton, Minn. the most dominant feature that is causing this downward spiral in prices. When compared to other sources of meats, the price of beef has been too high to remain competitive in the marketplace. The consumer dollar is remaining the same or shrinking for most consumers and this has forced that consumer to shop for the best value. This disparity has hurt the consumption which is reflected in the slower boxed beef movement over the past few years and the quantity of beef in storage with fewer live cattle. Once the relationship between all the competitive meats gets more in line, it would suggest a possible end to this price slide seen over the past many months. This would suggest that rallies will be short-lived unless the entire meat complex moves to parity in price. Producers should be aware of these market conditions and protect inventories when opportunities arise.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Oct. 14.

CORN — The corn market drifted aimlessly ahead of the mid-week release of the October World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates crop report. The December contract traded in a narrow 7.75 cent range leading up to the report. Report day was a dud fundamentally. The U.S. Department of Agriculture numbers were in line with trade estimates. However, technically new shorts entered the market to form a key reversal lower on the December corn chart. This chart formation however, was negated when December corn pushed PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. through $3.50 resistance on St. Paul short-covering in wheat spilling over into corn in the last half of the week. A sharply higher U.S. dollar during the week was seemingly ignored, as was clear weather for harvest progress expected into the middle of next week. As of Oct. 9, corn harvest was 35 percent complete versus the average of 38 percent complete. Harvest is expected to reach 48 percent complete by Oct. 16.

The USDA report didn’t lower the corn yield quite as much as expected. The new yield estimate is 173.4 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel per acre from last month and just 0.1 bu./acre lower than the trade prediction. Planted acres for 2016-17 were raised 400,000 acres to 94.5 million acres. Harvested acres were increased 200,000 acres to 86.8 million acres.

When combined with the yield decrease, total production dropped 36 million bushels to 15.057 billion

USDA pegs soybean yield at 51.4 bushels per acre NYSTROM, from pg. 25 bushels. 2016-17 exports were raised 50 million bushels to 2.225 billion bushels. This is a 17.2 percent increase in exports year-on-year. We would need to average roughly 31 million bushels per week in sales for the year to hit the USDA number. Ending stocks for 2016-17 slipped 64 million bushels lower to 2.32 billion bushels. This is a 33.5 percent increase in ending stocks year on year and the highest since 198788. The stocks-to-use ratio at 16 percent is the largest since 2005-06.

Turning to the 2015-16 balance sheet, a bigger carry-in number into 2016-17 was seen with a decrease in usage of 20 million bushels and a 2 million bushel increase in imports. The 2015-16 Supply/Demand table saw ending stocks rise 22 million bushels to 1.738 billion bushels.

World ending stocks for 2016-17 were forecasted at 216.8 million metric tons compared to 218.32 mmt estimated. Last month they were projected at 219.46 mmt. Brazil’s corn crop saw a 1 mmt increase to 83.5 mmt and their exports were up correspondingly to 25.5 mmt. Argentina’s crop estimate was unchanged at 36.5 mmt, but their exports were increased 1 mmt to 25 mmt. Argentina’s corn planting was estimated at 32 percent complete as of Oct. 13 versus 28 percent complete last year.

Weekly export sales were sharply below last week’s Mexican driven number. This week’s sales were 34.4 million bushels, bringing us to 85 percent ahead of last year. With the USDA forecasting 2.225 billion exports this year, we already have 38 percent on the books! As mentioned previously, we’ll need to average 31 million bushels per week in sale to attain the USDA forecast. New crop sales were marginal at 1.1 million bushels, but it brings us to 28 million bushels committed for 2017-18 versus just 8 million bushels last year by this date. Weekly ethanol production fell by 18,000 barrels per day to 962,000 bpd and has fallen in six of the last eight weeks. Yet production is still at the highest level ever for this time of year. Ethanol stocks dropped 800,000 barrels to 19.4 million barrels. Processor margins are in the 24 cents per gallon area.

OUTLOOK: We are beginning to get a clearer picture of the supply side of the equation, now it’s time to decide whether we believe the demand side. For

now, money is running the show. If you still need to make sales off the combine, this rally should be rewarded. For the week, December corn jumped 14.5 cents higher to settle at $3.54.25 per bushel and the July contract rallied 13.25 cents to $3.76.5 per bushel. Support in the December contract is the 50day moving average at $3.36, then closer to $3.25 per bushel. Resistance now lies at the 100-day moving average at $3.60 per bushel.

SOYBEANS — Soybean prices shifted lower in the days preceding the October crop report. As harvest moves forward, yield reports continue to be amazingly good. As I have said before, it’s almost embarrassing to post on Facebook or Twitter that your soybean yield is under 55 to 60 bushels per acre. The crop report pegged the soybean yield nearly spot-on with the trade estimate, but most traders had already been suggesting we’ll see further gains next month. Soybean harvest as of Oct. 9 was 44 percent complete versus 47 percent on average. Harvest by Oct. 16 is expected to be 59 percent complete.

The October crop report didn’t hold any big surprises. The yield number was not raised as much as yield reports from the country suggested. The USDA is carrying the soybean yield at 51.4 bu./acre, up from last month’s 50.6 bu./acre, and only slightly less than the 51.5 bu./acre trade guess. This blows last year’s record U.S. yield of 48 bu./acre out of the water! There is already chatter that the yield could climb to 52 bu./acre or higher on the next monthly crop report.

On the 2016-17 balance sheet, production was set at 4.269 billion bushels, up 68 million bushels from last month. The only acreage change was an increase in harvested acres of 10,000 acres. Exports were upped 40 million bushels from last month to 2.025 billion bushels and carry-in stocks were up 2 million bushels. The export category would be an increase of 4.5 percent year-on-year. Ending stocks were raised 30 million bushels to 395 million bushels compared to projections for a 413 million bushel carryout number. If accurate, this would be the highest ending stocks number since 2006-07. Turning back to the 2015-16 balance sheet, after minor adjustments in several usage categories, ending stocks were raised 2 million bushels from 195 million to 197 million bushels.

Hog future prices at deep discount TEALE, from pg. 25 The hog market has shown a little bounce in prices moving into the middle of the month as cash and futures came together at the October futures contract expiration. The change over to the December contract of futures posts an interesting situation as it is a deep discount of over $10.00 to the settlement of the October contract.

What the market is anticipating is further weakness is ahead by this deep of a discount. With hog prices, which have already dropped over $36 per hundredweight lean during the year so far, will we

see further weakness on top of this huge slide in prices? The expansion phase in hog production would cease quickly if the magnitude of a fall in prices is that severe. Cash prices have already slowed in the descent in price during the past few days which could be showing signs that the worst may be coming to an end. However, producers should be reminded that any rallies at this time may be met with good resistance unless the cash and pork cutouts also improve.

Therefore, producers should protect inventories if the opportunity arises and stay as current until a definite, low is established. ❖

World ending stocks for 2016-17 at 77.4 mmt were much higher than the 73.26 mmt pre-report forecast.

September’s number was 72.17 mmt. Brazil’s production outlook was increased 1 mmt to 102 mmt while Argentina was steady at 57 mmt.

China imported 7.2 mmt of soybeans during September, down from 7.26 mmt last year, but higher than the trade’s 6 mmt estimate. Cumulatively, China’s crop year imports are 83.2 mmt versus USDA’s forecast for 82.5 mmt. The USDA is forecasting China’s soybean imports at 86.5 mmt for 2016-17 — a new record.

Weekly export sales were well below last week, but still a respectable 52.1 million bushels. We are 26 percent ahead on total commitments versus last year. Total commitments of 1.091 billion bushels are 54 percent of the USDA’s total export forecast for 2.025 billion bushels this year. This may seem like a slam dunk to make the outlook, but we’ll need 21 million bushels in sales per week to achieve it. If we can, it would be the second biggest average weekly sales from here to the end of the marketing year on record.

In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, North Carolina’s Secretary of State estimated that up to 5 million poultry may have been killed due to the storm, mostly chickens. The USDA has thus far only confirmed 1.8 million poultry dead.

OUTLOOK: Report day saw the November soybean contract post a key reversal lower on the chart.

Taking into account an increase in open interest, the takeaway was new shorts were entering the market.

The widening of the November/January soybean carry supported the negative feel. However, it seems money flow has kicked in to counter the negative fundamentals and pushed prices back to the upper end of the trading range that has been in place since August.

For the week, November soybeans gained 5.75 cents to settle at $9.62.5 per bushel, while the July contract sped 10.25 cents higher to $9.90 per bushel.

Support in the November soybean contract is the recent low at $9.34 per bushel, with resistance at the 200-day moving average at $9.76.5 per bushel. Since Aug. 26, November soybeans have traded between $9.34 and $9.94 per bushel. At this time, it would seem the most likely move would be back toward the lower end of the range. South American weather will be a bigger factor as we move forward. Brazil could use some rain in the central region, but the dry southern region has received some relief in the past week and there’s more rain in the eight to 14 day forecasts.

Nystrom’s notes: Contract changes for the week ending Oct. 14: December Chicago wheat climbed 26.25 cents higher on short covering and new export demand, Minneapolis managed a 6.5 cent gain, and Kansas City was 14.75 cents higher. November crude oil was 63 cents higher at $50.44, ULSD and RBOB were essentially unchanged, and natural gas moved 14.75 cents higher. The U.S. dollar index at mid-afternoon on Oct. 14 was up 1.238 points for the week at 97.870. ❖

Minnesota beans mostly in bin Almost one-quarter of the soybean acreage was harvested in Minnesota during the week ending Oct. 16, according to USDAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Agricultural Statistics Service. There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, the most days suitable since the first week of August. While the drier weather allowed harvest in most areas, there were reports of fields or spots in fields still too wet to harvest. Field activities for the week included harvesting and fall tilling.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 26 percent surplus.

With almost all of Minnesotaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s corn acreage mature, 31 percent of corn for grain was harvested, six days behind the five-year average and five days behind last year. Corn moisture content of grain at

harvest was 19 percent. Corn condition rated 86 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week. Virtually all of the corn for silage acreage had been harvested. Soybean acreage was 87 percent harvested, slightly ahead of average but one week behind last year.

Sunflower acreage was 50 percent harvested, just ahead of average but one week behind 2015. Sunflower condition rated 59 percent good to excellent.

Potato acreage was 98 percent harvested, ahead of average. Advancing 31 percentage points from the previous week, 71 percent of the sugarbeet crop was harvested, two days behind the average pace.

The revenue guarantee for a given crop is the benchmark revenue times 86 percent (.86). The benchmark revenue is the five-year (2010-2014) county average yield (dropping the high and low yield) times the benchmark price, which is the five-year (2010-2014) average MYA price (again dropping the high and low price). The 2015 national benchmark prices were $5.29 per bushel for corn, $12.27 per bushel for soybeans, and $6.70 per bushel for wheat. Since these benchmark prices were considerably higher than the final 2015 MYA prices, the likelihood of 2015 ARC-CO payments was increased in many counties, especially for corn and wheat.

The relationship between the 2015 final FSA county yields and the 2015 county benchmark yields is extremely important in calculating the level of 2015 ARC-CO payments for corn and soybeans in a given county. Expressing the 2015 FSA county yield as a percent of benchmark yield is actually more important than the actual final county yield in determining estimated ARC-

CO payments.

Please refer to the following guidelines regarding the relationship of the percent of benchmark yield and the 2015 ARC-CO payments: (The final 2015 MYA prices are $3.61/bushel for corn, and $8.95/bushel for soybeans.)

Corn: Any County that has a percent of benchmark yield of less than 112 percent will likely realize the maximum (100 percent) estimated 2015 ARC-CO payment for that county.

Counties with a percent of benchmark yield of 112 to 118 percent will likely receive 50 to 99 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment. Counties with a percent of benchmark yield of 119 to 125 percent will likely receive 1 to 49 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment. USDA estimates over $6.8 billion in payments PLC payment for soybeans. The PLC payment rate is multiplied times the FSA established crop yield on a given FSA farm unit to arrive at the PLC payment rate per acre. Most 2015 corn PLC payment amounts in Minnesota, Iowa, and surrounding areas were probably about $9 to $14 per acre for corn, and $20 to $30 per acre for wheat.

Producers should be aware that most quoted ARC-CO payment rates per acre for corn, soybeans, and other crops need to be factored by 85 percent (.85) in order to arrive at an ARC-CO payment rate per crop base acre. The 2015 ARC-CO payments are also subject to the required federal sequestration reduction of 6.8 percent, which will affect the final total payment received by farm operators.

ments were widely different from county to county ($84.33 in Watonwan; $76.96 in Martin; $56.89 in Blue Earth; $48.88 in Faribault; and zero in Nicollet County).

The main reason for this variation was the difference in the 2015 benchmark corn yields from county to county.

The 2015 benchmark yields are based on the county average corn yield for the previous five years (2010-2014), dropping the high and low yield years, and averaging the other three years. The 2015 benchmark yields are 182 bushels per acre in Watonwan County, 178 in Martin, 175 in Faribault, 172 in Blue Earth, and only 162 in Nicollet County.

The final 2015 FSA corn yield is factored against the 2015 benchmark yield, in order to calculate final 2015 ARC-CO payments. So, at similar final yields, having a lower benchmark yield for a given year lowers the likelihood and payment amount of potential ARC-CO payments. In some areas, there was also considerable variation in the final 2015 FSA corn yields from county to county, which will also impact ARC-CO payment levels.

Corn and wheat producers who are enrolled in the Price Loss Coverage farm program choice also received a 2015 payment in October. The current target price is $3.70 per bushel for corn, and the 2015 final MYA price was $3.61 per bushel; so there was a 2015 PLC payment of 9 cents per bushel for corn. Similarly, the wheat target price is $5.50 per bushel, with a 2015 final MYA price of $4.89 per bushel, resulting in a 2015 PLC payment rate of 61 cents per bushel for wheat. The final 2015 MYA price for soybeans of $8.95 per bushel exceeded the $8.40 per bushel target price, so there was a zero

Total farm program payments USDA is estimating that slightly over $6.8 billion will be paid in total farm program payments to over 1.5 million farm operators during the month of October. This includes nearly $5.6 billion for ARCCO payments for all crops, and about $1.2 billion for PLC payments for all crops.

Corn leads the 2015 ARC-CO payments with over $3.8 billion, followed by soybeans at just over $1 billion, and wheat at about $600 million. For PLC payments, wheat leads the way with over $445 million estimated for payments for 2015, with $47.5 million expected in corn PLC payments. There will be no 2015 soybean PLC payments. These payments are based on lower MYA prices for many commodities, compared to ARC-CO benchmark prices and PLC target prices, as well as lower 2015 county average yields in some areas, which enhanced ARC-CO payments.

In Minnesota, there is a large variation in 2015 corn ARC-CO payments from county to county. For example, Blue Earth, Faribault, Martin, Nicollet, and Watonwan Counties, in South Central Minnesota, all had 2015 final FSA corn yields of over 200 bushels per acre, yet the 2015 ARC-CO pay-

field corn being harvested was at 18 percent. Corn condition rated 82 percent good to excellent. Regarding soybeans, 96 percent were dropping leaves or beyond, equal to the five-year average. Soybean harvest was 62 percent complete, six days behind last year’s pace.

Pasture condition was rated 62 percent good to excellent. Livestock conditions were described as good.

In Iowa, fieldwork was slowed by damp, foggy conditions but farmers were able to make some harvest progress during the 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Oct. 16, according the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Many farmers reported waiting for crops to dry down in the field before harvesting and concentrating on corn rather than soybeans. Other activities for the week included fall tillage, manure and fertilizer applications, and seeding of cover crops.

A river runs through it

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

A

blue and winding river runs through all six panels of Sauk Centre’s Main Street Mural.

The mural, subtitled, “A River and Its People,” is at the southeast corner of the intersections of the original Main Street and Sinclair Lewis Avenue, next door to the Hacienda Restaurant.

On the western panel, the young and towering Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis looks over the town that was often his inspiration. His back is turned toward Main Street, which was also the title of his most acclaimed and defamed novel.

On the far eastern panel, facing Lewis, is an equally-tall Ojibwe Chief named Hole-in-the-Day the Younger or Bagone-ghizig. History tells us that Bagone-ghizig aspired to be chief of the Ojibwe in central Minnesota around the time of the 1862 Dakota War. While Hole-in-the-Day and Lewis stand alone and look inwards, the woman in the central panel has

one child in her arms and another at her side. She, and the children, look out toward the future.

The positioning of Hole-in-the-Day, the unknown woman, and Lewis on the banks of the Sauk River give this beautiful mural a strong sense of unity.

Within that unity the artists placed lots of detailed and historical information. A Red River ox cart wagon train winds its way along the river in the Hole-in-the-Day panel. In another panel, a World War I soldier writes a letter to family in Sauk Centre. Behind him is a painting of downtown Sauk Centre at the time of the Great War, including a depiction of the orphan train. Some of the buildings shown are standing today.

A tiny airplane in the sky of the Lewis panel represents The Spirit of St. Louis. Charles Lindberg, who flew the plane across the Atlantic Ocean nonstop in 1927, had connections to Sauk Centre and nearby Little Falls.

The second and third panels from the east celebrate the strong agricultural tradition of Stearns

County including its dairy industry.

Sauk Centre’s Main Street Mural is a wonderful work of public art. Its colors sparkle, the figures are life-like, and the sense of perspective pleases the eye.

It is no doubt a pleasure to view by those who pass by it every day and it will reward any visitor who travels a distance to view it for the first time. ❖
