On Sept. 30, 1976, The Land was mailed to 14,600 south central Minnesota farms. While Americans were celebrating our country’s bicentennial, farmers around here were suffering the effects of a drought.

That’s why our headline on our first issue was “Putting a damper on drought.”

This year, the problem is too much rain.

The Land has always covered crops, livestock and grain prices and our archives are a history lesson on the past 40 years of agriculture. As you know, a lot has changed since 1976. Take a look: 1980s: Farm Crisis which resulted in consolidation in farms and ag companies and sadly many families lost their farms 1995: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved Bt corn, the first crop that could produce a protein that kills European corn borer larvae 1996: Monsanto introduced the Roundup Ready soybean, the first glyphosate-resistant crop 2002-2012: Commodity Super Cycle brought high grain prices These days, The Land has been covering a tough ag economy, water quality, avian influenza, precision agriculture, pesticide use, marketing, consumer education, research and farm programs. Some of these topics, we have covered for 40 years. Computers, technology and equipment have changed the way

you work. We’ve covered that too.

Yet, we also try to bring you the stories from family farms and small towns.

In 1976, our auctions and classified section was called Farmer’s Market.

Today we have many regular sellers and satisfied buyers. Many readers go directly to our auctions and classifieds when they get The Land.

We have expanded our reach from south central Minnesota to all of Minnesota and in 2010, we expanded into northern Iowa. Our circulation is more than 28,000 farm households. Subscriptions are voluntary with a suggestion of $15 or whatever you can afford.

Letter: Information is vital in helping agriculture move forward

Letter: State of Minnesota could provide acres of pollinator habitat acres of fields he has along our State Aid Highways that his staff groom like lawns or are allowed to be harvested for hay. These acres could be planted to bee pollinators or allowed to grow natural wild flowers. In addition to helping the bee population, letting these areas grow wild will also help other nesting wildlife flourish.

The governor and his staff always seem to enjoy pointing their fingers at those dirty, rotten wasteful polluting farmers. These problem people are the ones that allow him and his friends to have good healthy food, unlike the Minnesota bees, to eat every morning. I am a farmer that enjoys my honey bees and all the other wildlife on our 145-year-old family farm. I would enjoy not seeing the governor and his friends come out from the metro areas with cannons to shoot our wildlife and then blame us for everything.

When Gov. Dayton points his finger at a farmer next time, I hope he notices there are four fingers pointing back at him.

To the Editor: I applaud Gov. Dayton for drawing attention to the plight of the Minnesota honey bees. I am not a beekeeper, but have enjoyed allowing beekeepers to set their bee hives on my Wright County farm for more than 35 years. Their bees have feasted on our acres of blooming alfalfa fields. Recently, with the help of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service staff, we are exploring planting other bee pollinators on our nonproductive farm land.

As a veterinarian, I have firmly believed that the problem we are seeing in the bee population is the lack of good nutrition. Poor nutrition has resulted in an unhealthy bee population and their reduced ability to fight off diseases and other pests. A poor selection of available good nutrition has forced the bees to feed on less desirable plants that are harmful to the bees and their hives. A good selection of healthy plants to feed on will bring back our bee populations in my opinion.

Has anyone informed Gov. Dayton (State of Minnesota) that he is one of the biggest Minnesota farmers that are contributing to the decline of the Minnesota bee population? I do not know how many

In Nova Scotia that’s both easy and hard. Easy in that seafood is at the center of every plate, bowl, and salad; hard in that you have to choose which ocean delight to enjoy.

In Digby, the eastern terminus of the ferry, that choice is the town’s worldrenowned scallops. Most are farmed in the broad, blue bay that shelters the tiny town, and all are fresher than tomorrow’s breeze.

Down the road and around the southern coast two days later in Lunenburg, it’s lobster. Lobster bisque, lobster crepes, lobster quiche, and (yawn) just lobster. With the Canadian dollar equal to 78-cents U.S., our pocket change, the $1 loonies and $2 toonies our clever neighbors use, often covers lunch.

Cape Breton and its coastal Cabot Trail offer windy shoreline hikes, hearty sack lunches on craggy, oceanhugging hillsides, fresh cod dinners, and a Saturday evening of roiling Celtic music and cold Halifax beer.

A day later we’re back on a ferry. This cruise, just an hour, delivers us to Prince Edward Island. After a week of touring forested Nova Scotia and scenic Cape Breton, the big island and its well-kept farms look more like southern England than maritime Canada.

We arrive at 1 p.m. Sunday and PEI’s highways are as quiet and empty as its rural churches. We meander the back roads past browning potato fields and broad, ripening acres of low-bush blue-

berries. We had set sail for an island and somehow we landed in an Eden.

Monday brings more slow roads, several walks on PEI’s windswept, ironcolored beaches and the best meal of the trip at a plain, side-of-the-road restaurant that we would have driven past had we not been tipped to it by the online “Yelp” app.

Catherine (again) dives into PEI’s famous mussels, farmed in the ocean bays we can see from our table. We both order pan-seared halibut, fresh potatoes, and —oh my — just-made crème brulee topped with whipped cream and today’s blueberries. We then waddle to the car.

Two days later we’re back in the homeland to spend a night each in Bar Harbor, then Portland, Maine, where I get my beef groove back with a medium rare rib eye as big as Rhode Island. The name of the terrific Portland restaurant? Grace, by golly, and the meal was all grace and goodness.

The next day reality returns: flight delays and assembly line airport food.

Both are forgettable but the delicious food and lovely sights of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island will never be forgotten.

Letter: The Land is constant in our changing ag world To the Editor: The Greek philosopher Heraclitus does a great job summing up the ag industry.

Even though he lived over 2,500 years ago and an ocean away, his words ring true to Dave this day for many of Frederickson us in the Upper Midwest. He said, “Change is the only constant in life.”

As I look back on the 40 years since the first publication of The Land, I marvel at the world of agriculture. So much has changed since then. We now utilize satellites and computers to farm down to the inch. Precision agriculture has allowed us to save on water, fertil-

izer and other inputs while increasing yields beyond imagine.

However, I would like to make a slight modification to Heraclitus’ quote. The quality ag news, information, humor and inspiration The Land delivers to its readers in Minnesota and Iowa has been another constant and welcome sight in mailboxes for the past four decades.

I congratulate the staff of The Land on the success you’ve had over the years and I look forward to more great publications in the years to come.

He added, “It is not something producers should quit even if pseudorabies is eradicated. We cannot quit biosecurity measures.”

Today, PRV has been eradicated from domestic swine herds in the United States. ❖

On Oct. 13, 2000, The Land’s cover story was “PRV eradication on the horizon.” In 1999, swine herds with pseudorabies reached epidemic proportions. Thanks to efforts of pork producers, veterinarians and government officials, the eradication of the disease was in sight, wrote The Land Staff Writer Mindy Ward.

Here’s an excerpt from the article: “You have to give the pork producers the credit they deserve,” said Paul Anderson, veterinarian in charge of the Swine Division for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. “It was really a pretty heroic effort on their part to get this accomplished.”

A national program had been implemented in 1992 to eradicate the disease. While Minnesota was finding success by 2000, Iowa still had anywhere from 450 to 500 quarantined sites. Pork producers employed a

Reflection: In 40 years, some things don’t change

By RENAE B. VANDER SCHAAF The Land Correspondent I was just beginning my senior year in high school when The Land began.

By the time another four decades rolls around, I will be a senior Senior!

Imagine that.

A lot has happened in agriculture and in our lives the last 40 years. For those of us who are people of the land, those two are interwoven in days of sunshine or storms.

One sad change is that there are fewer farmers on the land. For I wish that anyone who aspired to be a farmer had that opportunity to labor side by side with grandparent, spouse and children.

I know my children have benefitted from the time they spent with their father and grandfather on the farm, working together. More children should grow up watching a mother hen cluck at her baby chicks. And wouldn’t everyone benefit from experiencing that exuberant joy which comes when the rain falls just in the nick of time to save a crop from disaster.

But perhaps that rain brought devastating hail and wind. Even if it missed our farm, the emotion is still there. I know the awful feeling my farmer and I got when we drove to Farmfest this year and saw the destruction done by storms earlier in the growing season.

Our conversation ceased, for we were stunned. We knew our crops back home were not bin busters this year, but all of sudden we felt really blessed.

Genuine tears did swell up. We farmers are a family. The dreams that

We call ourselves farmers. It’s a title we are proud to wear, for we know — as it says in Ecclesiastes 5:9 — that even the King can’t do his work without the man who tills the soil. Yes, even the wealth of our nation depends on the work we do.

Thankfully, labor is definitely easier than it was 40 years ago. How many high school boys today know what it’s like to fill enormous haymows on extremely hot, humid days? Or clean hog barns regularly with a scoop? Not many. And most of us don’t want to go back to that work ourselves.

Financial risks are still there. It’s a mighty large responsibility to know that your signature on a legal document defines the direction your farm is going to go and it directly affects generations to come. There is no joy for anyone in attending a creditor-forced farm sale.

When tragedy strikes, the neighbors are the first to be there to help. That hasn’t changed. Though numb with sorrow and pain, and we don’t know where to begin to pick up the pieces because a life’s work and dream is permanently gone, we realize farming isn’t all of what life is about.

Through the years, the articles in The Land magazine have united us. The glimpses into the lives of our neighbors, who may have similar farms or

totally different operations, make us feel as we have just made another friend. The magazine has educated us, provided us with encouragement, and entertained.

Just as the nation depends upon the work of our hands, so do we on our support team. Any time the newest issue arrives filled with advertisers, it’s a humble reminder just how much is dependent on area businesses to make sure that the right tools for farming are available. Without them, our work would be impossible.

Years ago, I picked up a copy of The Land at the farm show in Owatonna. I was impressed, so I sent in the card. As a farmer’s wife, I say thank you to The Land for the many ways you have made our lives as farmers better.

And as a writer, I say thank you for allowing me the privilege to be a part of The Land’s correspondents. It is an honor indeed.

Our first issue, Sept. 30, 1976, ran the headline “Putting a damper on drought,” which was a story about farmers’ irrigation systems. southern Minnesota area elevators reported an early harvest — three weeks early in Blooming Prairie — with better-than-expected yields. At the Wells elevator, the soybean yield was estimated at almost 45 bushels per acre.

Minnesota brewery, hop acreage counts on rise

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. PAUL, Minn. — Nothing goes better with bratwurst, a grilled pork chop or slow-cooked pulled pork than beer. Thanks to the craft beer explosion, there are many Minnesota-made brews to choose from.

Sean Cooke is field quality manager of the Better Beer Society of Minnesota. “There are now over 100 breweries in Minnesota and it is growing constantly. Two years ago we were at about 60,” said Cooke.

With 5.5 million people in Minnesota, this brewery fever can and will keep growing, according to Cooke.

“There’s lots of room to grow,” he said. “After the big drop in breweries due to prohibition legislation in 1908, we didn’t reach that number again until 2013. In that time span, the U.S. population tripled. So if we’re talking per capita consumption of what we used to be, we’re at only about onethird of that today.”

“I don’t think our brewery count will stop until we have a brewery in every neighborhood,” said Cooke.

Breweries come in all sizes from large breweries such as Schell’s and Summit to a Wisconsin brewery that only brews one barrel per day.

“One barrel is two kegs, so it perhaps is the smallest brewery in America at this date,” he said.

Hops farming Most hops for major breweries is still being grown out West. Oregon and Idaho are the major hops-producing states with 50,000 acres total.

“But there’s no denying that Minnesota’s booming craft beer industry has created a huge demand for hops,” Cooke said, “that special ingredient that provides the suds with bitter, citric and zesty flavors and aromas. Right now, only about 30 people are growing hops in the state, nearly all on 1 acre or less. Yet total hops production is up to 73 acres in 2016 from only 26 acres in 2015.”

“We do a showcase of all our Minnesota breweries,” said Cooke.

The display allows fair-goers to see just how big the brewery industry is becoming and maybe find a new favorite brew.

“We have a giant billboard that identifies by map the location of each brewer,” Cooke said. “People are amazed to see the great diversity across the landscape.”

It takes about three years for hop vines to start producing.

“There was never a market for Minnesota-grown hops until the craft brewing industry took off. But we’re now getting more hops into the pipeline each year,” said Brach.

October 9 Harvest is long days and longer nights. Add in a vicious cold, and Joan Lee had to take some welldeserved days off to get better and hopefully soon get back to finishing harvest. The Land spoke with Lee’s husband Mark on Oct. 9 as he was waiting for the rest of the organic soybeans to be ready to combine.

Lee already finished the conventional bean harvest. The crop this year was, “not too bad” though there were a “few drowned- out spots.”

With average temperatures forecasted for the week, Lee was optimistic he could attempt to combine the rest of the organic beans by the end of the week.

Lee chopped all but 15 acres of corn, and hopes to have the rest of the corn combined before the start of deer hunting. In the meantime, “I need to empty my (manure) pits.” Lee is also working on spreading hog manure onto organic ground.

The leaves are falling on the Lee farm and the mornings have become chillier lately, the thermometer this morning was 33 F with a “good frost on the ground.” Lee’s happy that the end of harvest is in sight, how close it actually is remains to be seen.

Andy Pulk, Roseau, Minn.

October 6 The soybean harvest is over half complete for Andy Pulk and so far “some beans are very good, some beans are very poor.” The Land spoke with Pulk on Oct. 6 as he was taking a break from bean harvest due to wet field conditions. He was optimistic the harvest would resume “hopefully this weekend.” The bean yields at this point are “below long term average,” he reported. Pulk believes that the yields are a result of “way too much moisture for way too long.”

While waiting for field conditions to improve, Pulk is “getting rid of last year’s sunflowers.” He plans to be done hauling by Oct. 7.

The corn has “pretty much all black layered.” Due to the wet conditions, he said, “I know we got one field that’s going to be terrible.” Pulk plans on starting to combine corn Oct. 15 to Oct. 20 and he said they are “going to drag our feet to see if we can get the corn dried in the field.” Pulk said he believes that this year’s corn is “going to be an exceptional crop.”

The wet fields have made Pulk concerned about getting tillage complete. “Hopefully we won’t get any more rain so we can get some corn tillage done. If we don’t, it’s a really bad thing going into next year,” he said.

Wet conditions have been a challenge throughout harvest, but with possible high-yielding corn out in the field, a little moisture isn’t going to stop Pulk from getting in the combine and getting that corn.

Note: Lee wants to say “hi” to an old college friend, Al from Glenwood, Minn., who jokes that he doesn’t have to call Lee to find out how things are going anymore; he just opens the latest issue of The Land to get that information.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa September 29 Farming is full of twists and turns, ups and downs and this harvest season is no exception. The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Sept.

29 and he reported this year’s soybean crop has done what he wasn’t expecting with yields that are some of the best ever. Moser admits he was surprised with how well the beans have been yielding, “so far, I’ve been proven wrong.” Yields are in the “upper 70s to low 80s coming out of the field,” he reported. The “pods are all ready, we’re going after it.”

Corn earlage “yields are above expectations.” As for grain corn, there’s “not a lot of corn going out yet.” However, there are “some guys that have started on corn before beans due to stock issues.”

“We’ve got good dry weather; we’re going to make some good progress,” he said. The harvest continues to roll on, crushing yield expectations and putting smiles on many faces out in the combines.

Moser sees the positive yield results on the beans but “I can’t put my finger on why beans are doing so good.” Only time will tell if yield results this favorable occur with grain corn as well. With dry weather conditions and potential best-ever yields, this harvest is shaping up to be a very promising one.

The soybean crop looks very promising out in the field; the problem is John Nielsen can’t get out to the field. The Land spoke with Nielsen on Sept. 29 as the rain continues to hamper the start of bean harvest. “We had 5 to 7 inches of rain last week,” he reported. There are currently potholes in the fields. Nielsen said he believes all this rain won’t be that much of a yield robber, but it will take time for fields to be ready to combine. The beans themselves are dry enough; it’s just a matter of getting into the field to get them harvested. “It’s disheartening,” Nielsen said. The rain also brought with it some strong winds which resulted in “wind damage on a hog set-up.”

The “other issue is getting this manure out; our pits are full.” Once field conditions improve, getting the manure in the field will be a priority.

Nielsen is going to “try a few beans” today and said he is hopeful that “maybe we can start going a little by little.” Nielsen “might even take some corn before beans.” His focus will be on whatever fields are ready.

With no rain forecasted until Oct. 5, Nielsen is hoping the weather will dry out the fields quickly. Harvest is usually done by deer season for Nielsen.

This year he can’t perceive that happening. The wet conditions have “definitely thrown a wrench in the whole (harvest) planning,” he said.

relief for losses due to feed or water shortages, disease, adverse weather, or other conditions, which are not adequately addressed by other disaster programs. ELAP covers physically damaged or destroyed livestock feed that was purchased or mechanically harvested forage or feedstuffs intended for use as feed for the producer's eligible livestock. In order to be considered eligible, harvested forage must be baled; forage that is only cut, raked or windrowed is not eligible.

Producers must submit a notice of loss to their local FSA office within 30 calendar days of when the loss is apparent. ELAP also covers up to 150 lost grazing days in instances when a producer has been forced to remove livestock from a grazing pasture due to floodwaters. For beekeepers, ELAP covers beehive losses (the physical structure) in instances where the hive has been destroyed by a natural disaster including flooding, high winds and tornadoes.

The Emergency Loan Program is available to producers with agriculture operations located in a county under a primary or contiguous Secretarial Disaster designation. These low interest loans help producers recover from production and physical losses due to drought, flooding.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — U.S. Department of Agriculture Minnesota Farm Service Agency executive director, Grant Herfindahl, reminds farmers and ranchers of federal farm program benefits which may be available to help eligible producers recover from recent heavy rains and flooding.

FSA offers disaster assistance and low-interest loan programs to assist agricultural producers in their recovery efforts following floods or similar qualifying natural disasters. Available programs and loans include: The Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program provides financial assistance to producers of non-insurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory, or prevented planting occur due to natural disasters (includes native grass for grazing). Eligible producers must have purchased NAP coverage for 2015 crops.

The Livestock Indemnity Program offers payments for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather. Eligible losses may include those caused by hurricanes, floods, blizzards, wildfires, tropical storms, tornados, lightning, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Producers will be required to provide verifiable documentation of death losses resulting from an eligible adverse weather event and must submit a notice of loss to their local FSA office within 30 calendar days of when the loss of livestock is apparent.

The Tree Assistance Program provides assistance for qualifying tree, shrub and vine losses due to natural disaster.

plants in question. If the population is small in number, hand-weed, place the plants in a large paper bag and remove it from the field to a site where you can burn the plant. For a larger population of plants in an affected area at this stage of the weed’s life cycle, mow the area and clean off the mower on-site to prevent the spread of any weed seed shed onto the mower. Mowing does not kill the entire plant but it will keep the seed on the ground in the affected area where insects and rodents can feed on the seed and mowing will reduce movement away from the affected area.

PAUL, Minn. — Scientists at the University of Minnesota and officials at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture urge farmers to check fields for Palmer amaranth, an aggressive weed which can put corn and soybean crops at risk. A plant detected in a native seed planting plot on a Yellow Medicine County farm was confirmed recently to be Palmer amaranth. This is the first confirmation of the weed in the state.

Despite critics, ethanol market gradually growing

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer SPENCER, Iowa — Ethanol is now blended into 97 percent of the gasoline used in the United States, accounts for 10 percent of the U.S. gasoline supply and has 200 U.S. plants producing nearly 15 billion gallons of ethanol. One would Kelly expect the move to E15 is just Nieuwenhuis around the corner. But not quite so fast.

“Our ethanol market is gradually growing,” said Kelly Nieuwenhuis, District No. 1 director of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. “But the critics of this most amazing story about renewable fuels in America are still active.”

Interviewed at the Iowa Corn Growers’ display at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Nieuwenhuis indicated people are getting better educated about ethanol fuels. “There no longer is any concern about the safety of ethanol,” he said. “We’re at E10 now and pushing for E15 as the next step in our national renewable fuels standards.”

Nieuwenhuis revealed three new ethanol plants are projected. “Ring Neck Ethanol Plant, Oneida, S.D., is funded, but construction is yet to begin,” he said.

“That plant may be a dual feed stocks plant — both grain sorghum and corn. The impact of an ethanol plant in a community is impressive. Here in Iowa, the impact on GDP (gross domestic product) is $4.2 billion. Wages at our 41 Iowa ethanol plants are $2 billion a year. So it’s a huge contributor to the economy of Iowa.”

I’m told the nearly 15 billion gallons of ethanol produced in 2015 reduced greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 41.2 million metric tons. That’s like removing 8.4 million cars from our roads — Kelly Nieuwenhuis Nieuwenhuis pointed out that farmers enjoy some marketing bonuses too. “Where there are ethanol plants, you have stronger basis for corn pricing,” he explained. “And you don’t need to be a producer member of an ethanol plant to share in this added value. Some plants are shareholder operations which means you don’t even need to be a corn producer. The ethanol industry has been huge for Iowa totally, both farmers and non-farmers.”

He noted that 2004 to 2012 represented eight consecutive years when corn production was in the black. “That was when and why I got into the ethanol industry,” Nieuwenhuis said. “Those were mostly good years for livestock producers too. We get 2.8 to 3.0 gallons of ethanol from each bushel of corn and we still have nearly 40 percent of the feed value of that bushel of corn in the by-products (distillers dried grains) from the ethanol production.

“Yet change and improvement is always happening within the industry. For example, many are now spinning the corn oil out of the process and making biodiesel. Some are producing such a fine process that it is food grade which moves it into an even higher value-added by-product.”

“They are one of the top in the nation,” he said. “Yet even now, they continue to try different enzymes and other tactics which might generate even a fraction higher yield. It takes keen thinkers running your ethanol plant. I’d wager the Little Sioux team samples their product a dozen times a day.”

So why is there such a challenge in getting the renewable fuels standard up to E15? Niuwenhuis said he believes the challenge is coming from the Environmental Protection Agency and its Environ-

mental Technology Initiative.

“We’ve proven we have a safe, clean product. It’s biodegradable, nontoxic and cleaner-burning. I’m told the nearly 15 billion gallons of ethanol produced in 2015 reduced greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 41.2 million metric tons,” he said. “That’s like removing 8.4 million cars from our roads! Plus, seldom mentioned is the fact that ethanol production requires less water than gasoline production by a three to one margin.”

Naysayers, however, complain that this aggressive growth of the corn industry is detrimental to the rural landscape of America. Nieuwenhuis responded, “It’s amazing, but we now use 2 percent fewer inputs, yet we’re now producing 260 percent more crop than we did back in the 1950s. We’ve done a tremendous job of putting technology to work in everything we do on our farms. We’re mapping as we plant. Then, as we harvest, we’re getting yield data on these same maps which helps us pinpoint input strategies for the next season.”

Some ethanol facts: • Iowa has 41 ethanol plants plus two cellulosic plants. Iowa produces about 30 percent of all U.S. ethanol. Currently, Iowa is producing about 3.9 billion gallons of ethanol per year.

• Minnesota has 20 ethanol plants plus one biobutanol plant. Minnesota produces slightly over 1 billion gallons of ethanol yearly. Minnesota has the most E85 stations in the United States • Ethanol plants are now found in 29 states. The industry employs 85,967 direct jobs, 271,440 indirect and induced jobs. The industry creates $44 billion in gross domestic product nationally and generates $24 billion in household income; at the same time generating $10 billion in tax revenue.

The United States is the world’s leading producer of ethanol, generating nearly twice as much ethanol as Brazil, the No. 2 producer. The U.S. industry was responsible for about 55 percent of global ethanol output in 2015 and exported approximately 850 million gallons. Canada is the leading market for U. S. exports accounting for 30 percent of total shipments.

Brazil, China, South Korea and the Philippines are other leading markets. About 28 million gallons were shipped to European countries in 2015. ❖

MDA Greenbook is now available ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture announces the publication of the 2016 Greenbook. The book is a set of research findings produced by 29 sustainable agricultural demonstration projects taking place on Minnesota crop, livestock, fruit, and vegetable farms.

Now in its 26th year, the Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program provides grants for testing farming ideas that focus on conservation, energy, profitability, or farmers’ quality of life. Each project submits an annual report to the MDA, which is then edited into a short article for the Greenbook so farmers statewide can benefit from grant

investments.

The 2016 Greenbook is more than 140 pages long and includes articles and findings from 29 projects, including cover cropping, energy efficiency on dairy farms, solar-powered drip irrigation, compost tea, and beneficial insect habitats.

Many gardeners have been asking about disease and spots on vegetation this year. Heavy rain events and high heat and humidity this summer have created ideal conditions for bacterial plant pathogens to multiply and spread.

The University of Minnesota Extension offers the following gardening strategies to use to manage bacterial diseases.

• Avoid working in plants when they are wet.

• When working in the garden, take care of healthy plants first.

• Clean tools with a solution of one part household bleach and nine parts of water.

• Remove infected plants that are no longer producing. Do not save seed from infected plants.

Prevention is the best strategy for managing bacterial disease. Microscopic bacteria are covered in a sticky coating and spread through the garden on tools, hands, feet and insects. Bacteria infect plants through natural wounds or openings. Overhead sprinkler watering and splashing rain water also spread the pathogens.

“The livestock people are particular. They’ve gone to the expense and time of preparing their critters for these shows. So any extra touch to impress the judges and the potential buyers is their agenda at these shows,” Sullivan said.

On hot days, exhibitors want lots of fans. Show boxes are a great item. And of course, ropes, halters, and special harnesses.

If that glue covers up the natural color of the hair, they’ll brush over to get back to the natural color. Judges know this; so do livestock dealers ... but it’s all part of the show.”

Different colored ropes are also popular for showing and decorating booths.

“I believe we’re up to eight different colors for ropes this year,” he said. “People are nuts about special colors for their livestock ropes and in the deco-

rating of their display booth, their equipment chests and sometimes just jazzing up their ribbons, pictures of the livestock farm, even pictures of the earlier generations that started a particular family livestock legacy. It’s just a matter of taste, and you know full well taste is always changing.”

While winning a livestock show is exciting, show winners also help producers build their reputation.

“They’re here not just to win the class their livestock are competing in, but also the bigger recognitions of grand champion and supreme championships,” Sullivan added. “If they win, the offspring of these winning animals becomes that much more valuable.”

Summer is a toiling, but generally rewarding, season for livestock supply outfits. Sullivan, after wrapping up eight days at the Clay County Fair, was heading to Tyler, Texas, for a four-day livestock expo; and then the big one in Dallas for the Texas State Fair which has a three-week run to the end of October.

Sullivan said his company attends about 20 percent of state shows across the United States, but dealers complete the circuit in the eastern states plus the far west. Even with livestock prices in the doldrums, Sullivan Supply isn’t feeling the pinch in the show business of livestock.

“The purebred livestock people are a different business agenda. They’re here to show their livestock.

Advertising is just simply basic to their business,” Sullivan said.

“And if their little kids are in 4-H and FFA livestock shows, then you just have another level of opportunity. Yes, they’re willing to pay that extra dollar to dress up their critters, that dairy heifer, their market pigs, even their rabbits and chickens.

They know very well what show business is all about and that in a nutshell is why we do good at these events — regardless the price of pork or beef on the hoof.” ❖

Wilcke chuckled at the possibility of being a political candidate himself.

He did share this wisdom: “Our goal should be to bring people together rather than dividing people.”

Wilcke doesn’t credit media with any favors toward agriculture. “We’re dirtying the water, we’re spreading the manure carelessly, we’re using antibiotics that make people sick.

Lots of negatives out there. We’re got to do a better job of educating the public about this amazing business called agriculture,” he said.

Wilcke still considers farming hard work, especially if livestock is involved.

“Mentally, the challenges are huge in agriculture. And always the unpredictable is how the weatherman treats you from year to year, season to season, even week by week.”

When talking with a corn producer, a question on yield prospects is a good ending. And Wilcke said he is confident that 200 bushel yields will be the standard in his part of Iowa this year. ❖

“We got into our own farm in 1992,” Wilcke reflected. “That was after helping my parents on their farm for 10 years after college while working fulltime. We’d always been tied to agriculture ... and that usually meant vacation days were helping mom and dad.

Today my son, who is an engineer, also wants to get into farming with ambitions of becoming a full-time farmer eventually. People retire, farms become available and maybe that will work for him.”

“We’re such a small minority anymore,” he said. “I have family members only one generation removed from their rural background. Their world

Blast from the past: Wagner Dairy 30 years later

“I’m very hard-working and dedicated. Farming taught me a lot of ethics,” said Julie.

The same can be said of her siblings.

Jennifer is a senior director for Agricultural Utilization Research Institute.

Justin has been key in expanding the family operation. He built a large free stall barn and then doubled its size a few years later.

“They aren’t tied up anymore. They can go anywhere they want,” said Julie.

“They can get up when they want. They can eat when they want.”

In the summer months, the barn is nice and cool thanks to a constant mist and fans. The cows can walk underneath back scratchers also.

The dairy employs a four-man milking crew. Twice a day, three of the men milk the cows in a double 11 milking parlor. They begin at 3:30 a.m. and finish around 10:30 a.m. and then come back at 3:30 p.m. and do it all over again. The morning shift is a little longer due to cleaning and other work.

In their fields, the Wagners grow alfalfa and corn.

“That’s mainly turned into corn silage and haylage,” said Julie.

The Wagner Dairy has a timeless quality. The old barn with the haymow is still in use. Julie’s son plays with his uncle’s old and rusty toy dump truck in the yard. And there are still chores to do.

“Regular chaos. Hasn’t changed a bit,” said Leonard. ❖

Justin Wagner, Julie’s brother, is running the dairy and working full-time on the farm. He lives nearby with his wife Heidi and their two sons: Andon, 6, and Owen, 3. The boys are little yet to do much on the farm, but they will help push up the feed for the cows.

While they enjoy the cattle, Leonard observed that they seem to like the tractors better.

Julie’s sister, Jennifer Wagner-Lahr and husband Larry Lahr have three children and operate a crop and livestock farm near Cold Spring. The heifers go to their farm for roughly six to eight months for holding, feeding and breeding. Then they come back home and wait to calf.

“They just get to lay and eat,” said Julie.

The dry cows can go into pasture, but if it’s too close to delivery they have to stay back because they don’t want calving to take place in the pasture. Then it’s on to milking.

Julie hasn’t milked for a while, but less than five years ago she came morning and night to milk the cows.

That was in addition to her nursing job. Julie is a registered nurse who works in the emergency room at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. She earned her degree at Ridge-

■ You’ll recall that preliminary USDA data reported August milk production at 16.7 billion pounds, up 1.9 percent from August 2015. USDA’s latest Dairy Products report shows where that milk went.

August cheese output totaled 990.0 million pounds, which is down 2.2 percent from July, but 1.2 percent above August 2015. That brought year-todate production to 7.97 billion pounds, up 1.9 percent from a year ago.

California produced 205.5 million pounds of that cheese, down 4.1 percent from July but 7.6 percent more than a year ago. Wisconsin, at 259.8 million pounds, was down 2.5 percent from July and 2.2 percent above a year ago. Idaho was down 1.1 percent from a year ago, while Minnesota was down 5.5 percent.

Italian cheese output was at 422.4 million pounds. This is down 4.7 per-

cent from July, but 5 percent above a year ago, with year-to-date at 3.49 billion pounds — up 4.1 percent.

Mozzarella, at 329.1 million pounds, was up 4.4 percent from a year ago.

Year-to-date was at 2.73 billion pounds, up 3.5 percent. Total American-type cheese production hit 389.4 million pounds. This is down 2.4 percent from July, 1.4 percent below a year ago, with year-to-date output at 3.14 billion pounds, down 0.1 percent. Cheddar output amounted to 279.4 million pounds, down 1.6 percent from a year ago; with year-to-date at 2.26 billion pounds, down 0.8 percent.

Butter churns produced 129 million pounds, which is down an eye- catching

10.4 percent from July, and just 0.7 percent ahead of a year ago. But yearto-date output was at 1.3 billion pounds, up 5.1 percent from a year ago.

California butter output totaled 38.2 million pounds, which is down 12 percent from July and 6.4 percent below a year ago.

Yogurt output amounted to 416.3 million pounds. This is up 3.6 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date hitting 3.16 billion pounds, down 1.0 percent.

Dry whey output totaled 75.8 million pounds, down 8.4 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date hitting 644.4 million pounds, down 0.5 percent.

Weekly cheese stocks were up 1.2 percent from the previous week, but are 12.8 percent below last year, according to FC Stone’s Oct. 7 Early Morning Update.

For the week ending Sept. 24, dairy cow slaughter under federal inspection was down 1.02 percent, at 58,200 head, compared with the same period the previous year. Year-to-date slaughter levels are 1.6 percent lower than 2015 levels.

orders are being placed. And, after months of oversupply, world consumption is now larger than global milk production.”

Gould and Dryer also say the drop in cheese prices was due primarily to a shift in supply. They explain that: “Processors in California, responsible for about one-fifth of USA dairy product production, chose to send milk to cheese plants during August instead of milk powder manufacturing facilities.”

Dairy margins have deteriorated since the middle of September due to declines in milk prices coupled with steady feed cost according to the latest Margin Watch from Chicago-based Commodity and Ingredient Hedging.

But, the Margin Watch adds, “Dairy producers are in much better shape than their colleagues in the swine and cattle industries as their margins remain above average and at relatively higher 10-year percentiles of profitability.”

■ As I have written in the past, consumers today are more interested than ever in where their food comes from and that is providing challenges at the farm level.

National Milk CEO Jim Mulhearn addresses the topic in his “CEO’s Corner,” writing that, “Any trip to a supermarket or restaurant these days would suggest that many safe, effective, science-based and common practices in agriculture are on a collective collision course with expectations down the food chain about how food ‘ought’ to be produced. That clash is what led to the new federal law on the disclosure of GMOs in food products. The same pressures are being felt when it comes to how livestock are handled and housed, as companies move to source cage-free eggs and stall-free pigs.

“If that weren’t enough, we also are facing another clash between how farmers strive to maintain healthy herds and flocks, and some consumers’ demands that no antibiotics be used — ever — in raising animals. We in the dairy industry need to be proactive and vigilant about this issue, because despite our long and proud history of judicious antibiotic use in dairy, both regulatory pressures and marketplace demands threaten to restrict the tools available on the farm.” Read more at www.nmpf.com.

MIELKE from pg. 24 Meanwhile, the Daily Dairy Report’s Sarina Sharp wrote in the Sept. 30 Milk Producers Council newsletter that “Overseas, prices continue to move higher for the most part, albeit with less enthusiasm. Strength abroad is likely to provide support at home, eventually. It is already helping to boost the powder market. For now, U.S. cheese, whey, butter, and milk powder are looking relatively inexpensive, providing potential for exports to whittle away domestic stockpiles.”

Sharp also reported about a challenge to the U.S. dairy industry regarding processing capacity. She states that, “In much of the U.S., milk production has expanded substantially and processing capacity has failed to keep pace. The lack of processing capacity is perhaps most severe in Michigan, and it is taking a toll on milk checks there.”

■ Spot butter sunk to $1.83 on Oct. 6, the lowest spot price since May 4, 2015.

But it regained 2 cents the next day and closed at $1.85 per pound. This is down 4.75 cents on the week and 56.75 cents below a year ago. Five cars were sold on the week.

Butter manufacturing is mixed in the Central region, reports Dairy Market News. A few churns curtailed production due to operational issues while others were running near to full capacity to meet buyers’ needs and expected high fourth quarter demand. Print butter sales to retailers and food service were strong this week and buyers’ interest is inching up, as prices continue trending down at the CME. Inventories are mixed throughout the region, according to Dairy Market News.

■ Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk ended at 91.5 cents per pound. This is down 1.25 cents, and 12 cents below a year ago, with seven cars selling on the week.

Dairy and Food Market Analyst editors Matt Gould and Jerry Dryer believe dairy prices are at or very close to the bottom. They stated in their Sept. 30 newsletter, “After analyzing the latest production and trade data, we believe this market has turned.

There might be a speed bump, or two, but the bottom of the price cycle is in place and now comes the rebound.”

“Milk production is down in the EU, Oceania, and the key dairying regions of South America. Prices in those areas are up. The USA is now price-competitive. First and second quarter export

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Oct. 7.

CORN — As October got underway, corn staged a nice rally on harvest-slowing rains in the eastern Corn Belt and the rally in wheat; but fund selling and a higher dollar in the latter half of the week cut the gains. Corn harvest as of Oct. 2 was 24 percent complete, slightly behind the 27 percent average. This provided support for another session. Technically, at mid-week, December corn opened and closed at the same price, posted a doji formation on the chart. This typically signals PHYLLIS NYSTROM a change in direction and in this CHS Hedging Inc. St. Paul case it seemed to do just that.

Strong psychological resistance was also apparent as the lead contract neared $3.50 per bushel. The high for the week was $3.49.25 per bushel — its highest level since July. For the week, December corn closed 3 cents higher at $3.39.75 per bushel and the July contract pushed 3 cents higher at $3.63.25 per bushel.

Private estimates began popping up for next week’s crop report. The average trade estimate for the October WASDE report is 173.5 bushels per acre with production at 15.06 billion bushels. The U.S Department of Agriculture in September used 174.4 bushels per acre for a crop of 15.093 billion bushels.

The average carryout estimate for the 2016-17 crop is 2.359 billion bushels versus 2.384 billion on the previous report. Overall, we’re not looking for any eye-popping changes.

Once again it has not been a great couple of weeks for the livestock markets. The struggle between supply and demand continues favoring the lack of demand as the source of the continued price weakness. This struggle is likely to continue with the demand for livestock products being the main feature in determining the price direction in both the cattle and hog markets.

As far as the cattle market is concerned, the steady drop in demand for beef products has been an ongoing process for several years. It appears to be leveling off at the present time. If this is the case when cattle numbers are at a period of lower overall numbers, then what kind of pressure comes when the cattle herd increases?

With pork and poultry prices well below beef prices per pound at the retail level, it seems beef will struggle to maintain current price levels. On the bright side, the market is on the oversold side in a technical picture and could see some price improvement in the short run. However, in the long-term picture, with ailing world economies and an increasing supply, albeit a slow process, it appears that the cattle market still has some downside risk. Therefore producers should continue to monitor market conditions and protect inventories when the opportunities arise.

No one can predict the future. An unplanned event, such as a divorce or a serious accident, could happen five minutes from now or 20 years down the road.

Triggering events such as these can profoundly impact an operation or a joint real estate purchase.

While tough to talk about, these types of situations need to be considered and mechanisms should be in place should the unthinkable happen in your operation.

Divorce: In the event of divorce, questions we often hear include: How will this impact the business? Will the departing spouse be awarded any stock or equity in the business? Who will get custody of the kids?

How can I afford child support?

How much child support will I be expected to pay? For how long? What about alimony?

Is alimony tax deductible? What about a parenting schedule, birthdays, holidays, church attendance, etc.?

Let's say the departing spouse (assuming they will no longer have a role in the business going forward) is awarded some stock or equity in the divorce settlement. Is there a way that asset can be purchased back from him or her? If so, how is the value established? Does the spouse remaining in the business have any preference over other business partners to be the buyer? What if the spouse cannot afford to buy the equity, who is next in line? Will it be a cash payout, or is it possible to make payments over time and, if so, what are the terms?

Soybean yield reports support record crop talk acre and production at 4.286 billion bushels. The September USDA’s numbers were 50.6 bushels per acre for a crop of 4.201 billion bushels. The estimate for 2016-17 carryout is 413 million bushels versus 365 million bushels last month. The August NASS Oilseed Crush published this week was close to expectations at 140.6 million bushels.

Weekly export inspections, what is actually shipped, through Sept. 29 were 40.6 million bushels. Total inspections so far this year are a record 124.9 million bushels and are on pace to set a new record for the month of September. Weekly export sales were astounding at 80.2 million bushels and the highest since September 2015.

High sales were anticipated after China’s buying spree last week. Total export commitments are 1.040 billion bushels of the 1.985 billion bushel USDA outlook. Commitments to China stand at 12.6 mmt and unknown at 11 mmt. China was on holiday for Golden Week which kept new export sales announcements at a minimum.

China floated the idea they may have to implement anti-dumping tariffs, and possibly have a compensation system for farmers to promote domestic agricultural production, ensure food security, alleviate rural poverty and cut imports. It’s too early to trade the suggestion, but watch for developments.

OUTLOOK: If your yield doesn’t start with a “6,” it may be embarrassing to stop in for coffee at the local hot spot. This crop is a record and is getting bigger, if all the yield reports are to be believed, and there’s no reason not to believe it. ❖

Clearly establish valuations, terms for divorce, disability There needs to be an agreed-upon definition for the term “disability.”

When someone is struggling with a disability, it’s not always obvious or physical. How do you define disability on the front-end? Do you involve a doctor?

Do you need to have more than the opinion of one doctor? What if someone is deemed disabled? What happens next? How do we manage this risk?

Work with your professional advisors to learn about the different types of disability insurance and which one might be right for you. The most costly form of disability insurance is for your “own occupation,” and less expensive options cover combinations of your own occupation and/or “any occupation.”

They have different premium levels and different terms you need to understand. You certainly want to know what the waiting period is, how long the policy pays, and if it includes an integration of benefits.

How much will the policy cover if you are no longer working and what’s the impact on your personal cash flow long-term?

Next, take some time to explore different scenarios and what you want to offer your team. Think about what the business can actually afford. Is there an agreement with the business owners regarding how long you’ll pay someone their salary if they become disabled? How much time do you give them to return to 100 percent capacity? During that time, do you continue their salary? Might there be another role

for them in the business if their disability is minor?

If a partner passes beyond that continuation period, yet still can’t contribute to the operation, what then is the plan of action and what’s the trigger? Once that’s determined, what’s the next step?

A buy out? What would be an acceptable return on their equity? What are the terms?

In the end, terms in the buy-sell agreement need to clearly define what happens if a triggering event occurs and how valuations will be established.

Make sure you’re working with professionals to address tax implications and keep your attorney involved to make sure you stay aligned with the original terms as designed in the buy-sell agreement. Prepare an “annual certificate of valuation” which defines the equity position of all members and describes the outcome of all of the triggering events in the buy-sell. Have everyone understand and sign the certificate every year so there are no surprises should your business be surprised by an unexpected event.

If so, is there an agreement describing the parameters of a lease agreement including annual rate, renewal process, and termination provisions? If there are disputes, is there a dispute resolution process in place that involves a mediator or an arbitrator to settle them?

Even when things are going smoothly, circumstances change. If you are renting from a former spouse and they need to liquidate the property, will you be offered a “first right of refusal” or at least, be in the game to purchase the property when it goes on the market? If you have a son or daughter in the business, would they be considered a preferred buyer?

One common vehicle often used to protect equity in divorce situations is a “vesting” or “discount” schedule” including a “claw-back provision.” If a successor has earned equity in a business, but is not “vested” in ownership, the equity is not available to the divorcing spouse and can be retained by the individual remaining in the business as equity which they one day will be 100 percent vested in.

Disability: Another triggering event which can impact your business is disability. It’s vital to spend time with your attorney and insurance experts to discuss how to professionally manage this risk.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange is forecasting Argentina’s corn crop at a record 30 mmt, which is up 2 mmt from their previous estimate. They project acreage to climb 27 percent from 3.85 million hectares last year to 4.9 million this year, with planting nearly 26 percent complete.

OUTLOOK: December corn has been unable to push through $3.50 per bushel, which will be first resistance. First support may be found closer to $3.35 per bushel (50-day moving average), SOYBEANS — Soybeans jump-started the new month with double-digit gains on spillover support from a spike higher in meal. Meal’s rally was inspired by Argentina’s confirmation that they will not cut export taxes by 5 percent this year, an election promise made by President Macri. Instead, they will leave the tax on soybeans and products at 30 percent and wait until 2018 for any further export tax cut. At that time, export taxes will be cut 0.5 percent per month until the end of 2019. While the announcement had been rumored, the effect is expected to be manifested in less soybean acres and more corn acres this coming crop year. On the current global scene, Argentina is the cheapest source of meal for the November-December time frame, followed by the United States, then Brazil.

The trade had already anticipated a large number after last week’s huge sale to Mexico. We have already committed 811 million bushels to the export corridor versus total exports forecasted at 2.175 billion bushels. Export inspections for the week ending Sept. 29 (and released Oct. 3) were excellent at 57.9 million bushels. We only need to average 45 million bushels per week to hit the USDA export projection.

The August USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Grain Crush report released Oct. 3 showed 458 million bushels used for fuel alcohol versus 446 million bushels last year. This was as expected. The weekly ethanol production number was 980,000 barrels per day, down from 989,000 bpd in the previous week. Production is running at a record pace for this time of year. Ethanol stocks fell from 864 million gallons to 848 million gallons. When looking at both of these reports, the trade may expect the Oct. 12 WASDE report to increase the ethanol usage line.

Conab released their first 2016-17 Brazilian corn production estimate at 82.3-83.8 million metric tons versus 66.7 mmt last year. The breakdown is 26.327.7 mmt for the first crop and 56.1 mmt for the second crop. Last year’s production was 25.9 mmt and 40.8 mmt respectively, due to poor weather conditions. The USDA’s total corn output estimate is 82.5 mmt. Brazil’s government approved three U.S. corn

Stratmoen’s attention to detail and commitment to the environment are why he is this year’s Environmental Steward award winner.

Brett Stratmoen, of Stratmoen Hog Finishing near Boyd, Minn., is the Minnesota Pork Board’s Environmental Steward award winner. farm.

At a young age, Stratmoen understood

the value in diversifying their family farm. After graduating from high school, he purchased a pig farm where he now raises 12,000 pigs a year as a contract grower for Christensen Farms. In addition to the pigs, Stratmoen farms 1,200 acres of corn and soybeans.

In 2008, he invested in his own manure pumping equipment. Soon after, neighbors started calling to request custom manure application for their farms; from this Triple S Pump-

ing was started. In addition to the pigs and the manure pumping business, He also has three semis that he uses to commercially haul pigs.

“My trucks are kept in a shop that is at least 12 miles from any livestock,” said Stratmoen. “It is very important to me that my trucks are clean and so are the animals that I haul.”

Today, Stratmoen owns three businesses that employ six full-time employees and several part-time employees. Through his example, every employee recognizes the importance of caring for the environment.

“I always want to do the right thing,” said Stratmoen. “The land has been in my family since 1896, and I want to make sure it is around for many more generations.”

Given the amount of pork in cold storage, the supply of pork products seem more than adequate to meet current demand. The

This still does not mean that we will not see rallies in the future, but until the supply of hogs weaken or demand for pork increases, hog prices could continue to deteriorate. “The Stratmoens have enrolled highly sensitive land into CRP and reduced soil erosion through contours and crops like alfalfa on sensitive acres that are still in crop production,” said Bauman.

Neighbor relations and maintaining a clean site are also critical to ensuring long term sustainability. Trees have been planted to reduce odor and improve the overall aesthetics of the farm.

“My family and I are members of this community,” said Stratmoen. “I want to do everything possible to make sure the next generation of farmers have the same opportunities that I have had.”

“I have always appreciated Brett’s concern for protecting the environment and doing what is right now and for future generations,” said Bauman.

“He is very deserving of this award.”

The plans are developed each spring and fall utilizing Real Time Ag, an internet-based comprehensive manure planning and record keeping software that ensures nutrient application rates are in compliance with Minnesota Pollution Control Agency regulations.

“I have been impressed by Brett’s attention to detail,” said Jeff Bauman of Anez Consulting. “His desire to do what is right every time is grounded in his commitment to environmental stewardship.”

The manure management plans are based on annual manure tests and are adjusted based on soil nitrogen testing and legume credits. In an effort to

Matthew and David Hanson of Goodridge used grant funding to expand and improve their existing dairy facilities by adding a robotic milking unit and installing equipment to improve profitability.

Qualifying producers are reimbursed 10 percent of the first $500,000 of investment, with a minimum investment of $4,000. Qualifying expenditures include the purchase, construction or improvement of livestock buildings or facilities. Fencing, feeding and waste management equipment are also covered. Producers who suffered a loss due to natural disaster may also apply. The grant will not pay for livestock, land purchases or debt refinancing.

Past applicants who did not receive an award need to reapply for the 2017 program.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson asks livestock producers to apply for a portion of $2 million in grants available for on-farm improvements as part of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation Program.

“Livestock Investment Grants help farmers stay competitive and reinvest in their industry,” said Frederickson.

“Last year, we had 104 livestock farmers receive grants to improve their operations.”

Whether at the family table, at a community picnic, or at a barbecue with friends, the memories come flooding back with each bite.

That’s why the editors included stories and reminiscences from the recipe contributors: So cooks can put a “face” to the recipe and join the fun.

Sometimes funny, other times poignant, the stories add extra flavor and zest to the recipes themselves.

■ The following recipe calls for simmering the green beans for … wait for it … an hour. What?! Well, it makes the beans verrrry tender. And the bacon

imparts a deep smoky flavor that recalls the contributor’s childhood home on a Kentucky farm.

Old-Fashioned Green Beans 4 strips bacon 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed 1-1/2 cups beef broth, heated 1/4 cup chopped onion Freshly ground black pepper In a skillet over medium heat, fry bacon until crisp. Remove and drain on paper towels. Reserve bacon drippings.

When cool enough to handle, crumble or break up bacon.

Sauté beans in bacon drippings until bright green. Drain off fat. Add hot beef broth and onions. Heat to boiling, then reduce to simmer, cover, and cook for about an hour. Add pepper and bacon crumbles. Makes 4 servings.

Blueberry-Kidney Bean Salad with Fresh Vegetables Dressing: 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon curry powder Salad: 1 can (15.5 ounces) red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 onion, cut into bite-size pieces 1 green pepper, cut into bite-size pieces 1 tomato, cut into bit-size pieces 1-1/2 cups fresh blueberries 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese For dressing: In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and curry powder.

For salad: In another bowl, combine beans, onions, tomatoes and peppers, Stir in blueberries and feta. Pour dressing over bean mixture and mix well.

Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. Makes 4 servings.

■ The recipe contributor notes that in order to save time, she invented this version of cabbage rolls, which makes “one big roll” instead of individual ones and tastes “exactly the same.” She says her mom wasn’t happy about it, although she could see how it saved time!

Unrolled Cabbage Roll-ups 3 pounds lean ground beef 1 onion, chopped 2 eggs 3/4 cup ketchup 1/2 cup cooked rice 1/2 cup bread crumbs 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 medium to large cabbage, chopped 2 10.5 ounces cans tomato soup

1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, with juice 1 can (14.5 ounces) stewed tomatoes with juice Mashed potatoes (optional) Preheat oven to 350 F. Use a roasting pan with a high lid (like a turkey roaster). In a bowl, combine ground beef, onions, eggs, ketchup, rice, bread crumbs and Worcestershire sauce. Mix to blend. Shape into loaf and place in pan. Spread chopped cabbage around and over loaf. (Cabbage will cook down.)

In another bowl, mix together tomato soup, 1-1/2 cups water, and diced and stewed tomatoes. Pour over cabbage and meat. Cover with lid. Bake for 3 to 3-1/2 hours, or until cabbage is tender, stirring cabbage gently halfway through.

Serve over mashed potatoes, if desired.

■ Substituting mashed avocado for butter in recipes adds flavor, vitamins and minerals while reducing calories and fat. Yay! Try this lightly sweetened loaf for breakfast or coffee break. This pale green bread goes perfectly with a spread of softened cream cheese mixed with a little lemon juice and grated lemon zest.

Avocado Bread 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1/2 cup mashed avocado 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup chopped pecans Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease a 9 by 5 inch loaf pan. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk to blend thoroughly.

In another bowl, beat together egg and avocado. Stir in buttermilk. Add to dry ingredients and blend well. Stir in pecans. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Makes one loaf.

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

A

lbert Pabst has been husking for a long time.

He was in the corn fields shucking corn before it was competitive, before it was a spectator sport and before there were machines to do it more efficiently. Cornhusking began as a functional practice. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, husking corn by hand was the only way to get it harvested.

It was said a good man could husk a hundred bushels a day. In his prime, Pabst averaged 150 bushels a day.

“I used to do it for wages, by the bushel,” said Pabst, of Sanborn. “Thirteen cents a bushel … that was big wages then. Thirteen cents at 150 bushels — that’s $20 a day. That would be the same as making a $100 today.”

In the early 1920s, cornhusking became a competitive event. Through the ’20s and ’30s, the contests became huge social events, some of them attracting tens of thousands of onlookers. The bombing of Pearl

Harbor, however, brought an end to the contests, and after World War II, technology made manual cornhusking obsolete. It wasn’t until the 1970s that cornhusking contests were revived. Pabst is almost 81 now. He still husks corn in these competitions and remains active in the state’s cornhusking association.

Cornhusking is in his blood.

As the winners’ names were being called over the loud speaker for the girls youth category at the state competition, Pabst listened intently. The first place winner was announced. “That’s my granddaughter,” Pabst said. The second place winner was announced.

“That’s my granddaughter.”

And with that, Pabst was off to watch yet another granddaughter take part in the cornhusking competition.

She too won, taking first place in her division.
