On Sept. 30, 1976, The Land was mailed to 14,600 south central Minnesota farms. While Americans were celebrating our country’s bicentennial, farmers around here were suffering the effects of a drought.

That’s why our headline on our first issue was “Putting a damper on drought.”

This year, the problem is too much rain.

The Land has always covered crops, livestock and grain prices and our archives are a history lesson on the past 40 years of agriculture. As you know, a lot has changed since 1976. Take a look: 1980s: Farm Crisis which resulted in consolidation in farms and ag companies and sadly many families lost their farms 1995: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved Bt corn, the first crop that could produce a protein that kills European corn borer larvae 1996: Monsanto introduced the Roundup Ready soybean, the first glyphosate-resistant crop 2002-2012: Commodity Super Cycle brought high grain prices These days, The Land has been covering a tough ag economy, water quality, avian influenza, precision agriculture, pesticide use, marketing, consumer education, research and farm programs. Some of these topics, we have covered for 40 years. Computers, tech-

nology and equipment have changed the way you work. We’ve covered that too.

Yet, we also try to bring you the stories from family farms and small towns.

In 1976, our auctions and classified section was called Farmer’s Market. Today we have many regular sellers and satisfied buyers. Many readers go directly to our auctions and classifieds when they get The Land.

We have expanded our reach from south central Minnesota to all of Minnesota and in 2010, we expanded into northern Iowa. Our circulation is more than 28,000 farm households. Subscriptions are voluntary with a suggestion of $15 or whatever you can afford.

More importantly, we ask that you fill out a subscription card every January. The more subscription cards we have on file, the more advertisements we can sell. Our advertisers make it possible to publish and mail The Land to you every week.

Letter: The Land is constant in our changing ag world Land, I marvel at the world of agriculture. So much has changed since then. We now utilize satellites and computers to farm down to the inch. Precision agriculture has allowed us to save on water, fertilizer and other inputs while increasing yields beyond imagine.

However, I would like to make a slight modification to Heraclitus’ quote. The quality ag news, information, humor and inspiration The Land delivers to its readers in Minnesota and Iowa has been another

constant and welcome sight in mailboxes for the past four decades.

To the Editor: The Greek philosopher Heraclitus does a great job summing up the ag industry. Even though he lived over 2,500 years ago and an ocean away, his words ring true to this day for many of us in the Upper Midwest.

He said, “Change is the only constant in life.”

Letter: Information is vital in helping ag move forward Stewardship, we work closely with ag journalists to provide information about state issues that could affect farmers. Recently, our department and other state departments of agriculture have been working hard to engage farmers and encourage them to adopt practices to help them do an even better job improving soil health and protecting water quality.

Farmers have shown they are willing to invest and adapt to address this critical issue. Farmers have built millions of feet of terraces, miles of grassed waterways and adopted no-till, conservation tillage and cover crops to reduce soil and nutrient loss. They are also learning about additional in-field and edgeof-field practices such as wetlands, bioreactors and saturated buffers.

I am extremely proud of the progress we have made in Iowa. More than 5,000 farmers have signed up to try water quality practices on their farm and we have 45 demonstration projects located across the state to help implement and demonstrate water quality practices through the initiative. More than 100 organizations are participating in these projects.

Iowa is fortunate to have rural and urban leaders on both sides of the aisle who are committed to taking on the challenge of improving water quality and we will keep working with Iowans all across the state to help get more conservation practices on the ground. And, our ag publications, farm broadcasters and other trusted news sources have been helping us share information and keeping farmers up-todate.

I look forward to continuing to work with you as we continue our efforts in Iowa and following along with your coverage to learn about efforts going on elsewhere.

Again, congratulations on 40 years of service to farmers and thank you for all your work to help ensure farms in Iowa and Minnesota remain successful, profitable and sustainable.

MDA publishes 2016 Greenbook of grant projects ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture announces the publication of the 2016 Greenbook. The book is a set of research findings produced by 29 sustainable agricultural demonstration projects taking place on Minnesota crop, livestock, fruit, and vegetable farms.

“The Greenbook is an important part of our Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program,” said Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson.

“This publication is where we show that innovative ideas can create sustainable solutions that work in

real Minnesota agricultural operations.”

Now in its 26th year, the Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant Program provides grants for testing farming ideas that focus on conservation, energy, profitability, or farmers’ quality of life. Each project submits an annual report to the MDA, which is then edited into a short article for the Greenbook so farmers statewide can benefit from grant investments.

The 2016 Greenbook is more than 140 pages long

and includes articles and findings from 29 projects – including cover cropping, energy efficiency on dairy farms, solar-powered drip irrigation, compost tea, and beneficial insect habitats.

Less government? Be careful what you wish for

The think tank’s president, Jim DeMint, a former GOP senator, lights the fuse in the report’s foreward: “Our leaders will best honor the vital role of agriculture in our society by letting us return to our plowshares unmolested by government, and leaving despotism with the rest of the fertilizer.”

With that metaphoric heave, Heritage tosses most of the current farm bill into the legislative manure spreader. For example, it urges Congress to write a farm law without today’s “central-planning policies… (like) payments to idle land, marketing orders, and subsidized crop insurance.”

With that hearty start, the Heritage report recommends Congress give the

heave-ho to long-time farm bill elements. It argues any new bill should: • disconnect all ag program spending from the law’s nutrition programs; • eliminate revenue-based crop insurance so “agricultural producers succeed (or fail) on their own merits;” • “eliminate the bioenergy programs in the farm bill; repeal the ethanol mandate in its entirety and allow consumers a choice at the pump;” • get rid of the recently- passed “labeling of genetically engineered food” law, and “transfer management of federal lands to states and private citizens.”

Letter: State could provide acres of pollinator habitat nesota bee population? I do not know how many acres of fields he has along our State Aid Highways that his staff groom like lawns or are allowed to be harvested for hay. These acres could be planted to bee pollinators or allowed to grow natural wild flowers. In addition to helping the bee population, letting these areas grow wild will also help other nesting wildlife flourish.

The governor and his staff always seem to enjoy pointing their fingers at those dirty rotten wasteful polluting farmers. These problem people are the ones that allow him and his friends to have good healthy food, unlike the Minnesota bees, to eat every morning. I am a farmer that enjoys my honey bees and all the other wildlife on our 145year-old family farm. I would enjoy not seeing the governor and his friends come out from the metro areas with cannons to shoot our wildlife and then blame us for everything.

When Gov. Dayton points his finger at a farmer next time, I hope he notices there are four fingers pointing back at him.

To the Editor: I applaud Gov. Dayton for drawing attention to the plight of the Minnesota honey bees. I am not a beekeeper, but have enjoyed allowing beekeepers to set their bee hives on my Wright County farm for more than 35 years. Their bees have feasted on our acres of blooming alfalfa fields.

Recently, with the help of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service staff, we are exploring planting other bee pollinators on our nonproductive farm land.

As a veterinarian, I have firmly believed that the problem we are seeing in the bee population is the lack of good nutrition. Poor nutrition has resulted in an unhealthy bee population and their reduced ability to fight off diseases and other pests. A poor selection of available good nutrition has forced the bees to feed on less desirable plants that are harmful to the bees and their hives. A good selection of healthy plants to feed on will bring back our bee populations in my opinion.

In 40 years, some things don’t change

By RENAE B. VANDER SCHAAF The Land Correspondent I was just beginning my senior year in high school when The Land began. By the time another four decades rolls around, I will be a senior Senior! Imagine that.

A lot has happened in agriculture and in our lives the last 40 years. For those of us who are people of the land, those two are interwoven in days of sunshine or storms.

One sad change is that there are fewer farmers on the land.

For I wish that anyone who aspired to be a farmer had that opportunity to labor side by side with grandparent, spouse and children.

I know my children have benefitted from the time they spent with their father and grandfather on the farm, working together. More children should grow up watching a mother hen cluck at her baby chicks. And wouldn’t everyone benefit from experiencing that exuberant joy which comes when the rain falls just in the nick of time to save a crop from disaster But perhaps that rain brought devastating hail and wind. Even if it missed our farm, the emotion is still there. I know the awful feeling my farmer and I got when we drove to Farmfest this year and saw the destruction done by storms earlier in the growing season. Our conversation ceased, for we were stunned.

We knew our crops back home were not bin busters this year, but all of sudden we felt really blessed.

Genuine tears did swell up. We farmers are a family. The dreams that were started as seeds were planted are gone for now. I sincerely hope those affected by summer storms can persevere.

We call ourselves farmers. It’s a title we are proud to wear, for we know — as it says in Ecclesiastes 5:9 — that even the King can’t do his work without the man who tills the soil. Yes, even the wealth of our nation depends on the work we do.

Thankfully, labor is definitely easier than it was forty years ago. How many high school boys today know what it’s like to fill enormous haymows on extremely hot, humid days? Or clean hog barns regularly with a scoop? Not many. And most of us don’t want to go back to that work ourselves.

Financial risks are still there. It’s a mighty large responsibility to know that your signature on a legal document defines the direction your farm is going to go and it directly affects generations to come.

There is no joy for anyone in attending a creditor-forced farm sale.

When tragedy strikes, the neighbors are the first to be there to help.

That hasn’t changed. Though numb with sorrow and pain, and we don’t know where to begin to pick up the pieces because a life’s work and dream is permanently gone, we realize farming isn’t all of what life is about.

Through the years, the articles in The Land magazine have united us. The glimpses into the lives of our neighbors, who may have similar farms or totally different operations, make us feel as we have just made another friend. The magazine has educated us, provided us with encouragement, and entertained.

Just as the nation depends upon the work of our hands, so do we on our support team. Anytime the newest issue arrives filled with advertisers, it’s a humble reminder just how much is dependent on area businesses to make sure that the right tools for farming are available. Without them, our work would be impossible.

Years ago, I picked up a copy of The Land at the farm show in Owatonna. I was impressed, so I sent in the card. As a farmer’s wife, I say thank you to The Land for the many way you have made our lives as farmers better. And as a writer, I say thank you for allowing me the privilege to be a part of The Land’s correspondents. It is an honor indeed. ❖

Changes in store for new farm bill?

GUEBERT from pg. 7 This slash-and-burn list of farm bill changes isn’t as radical as it first appears because, in truth, it’s a pretty accurate reflection of the rock-ribbed economic and political conservatism preached by most farmers and their, ahem, non-partisan, apolitical farm groups.

It is quite radical, however, to see that preaching taken to its logical policy ends and presented to farmers in almost inarguable, free-market language.

In effect, Heritage is saying to American farmers: “Okay, you want less government, here’s what ‘less

government’ looks like: no food stamp alliances to carry a new farm bill through Congress; no government-protected alternative fuel program; no taxpayer-subsidized revenue insurance programs; no sugar program…”

Oh, that’s not what you mean when you say “less government”? Well, that’s what Congress — the new Congress that will write the 2018 farm bill — hears.

Blast from the past: Pig farmers eradicate PRV On Oct. 13, 2000, The Landâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cover story was â&#x20AC;&#x153;PRV eradication on the horizon.â&#x20AC;? In 1999, swine herds with pseudorabies reached epidemic proportions. Thanks to efforts of pork producers, veterinarians and government officials, the eradication of the disease was in sight, wrote The Land Staff Writer Mindy Ward.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an excerpt from the article: â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to give the pork producers the credit they deserve,â&#x20AC;? said Paul Anderson, veterinarian in charge of the Swine Division for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was really a pretty heroic effort on their part to get this accomplished.â&#x20AC;?

A national program had been implemented in 1992 to eradicate the disease. While Minnesota was finding success by 2000, Iowa still had anywhere from 450 to 500 quarantined sites. Pork producers employed a three-fold strategy: tight biosecurity, vaccination and management for disease control.

Do you remember the drought of 1976?

Our first issue, Sept. 30, 1976 ran the headline “Putting a damper on drought,” which was a story about farmers’ irrigation systems. In fact, the drought was so bad that the Oct. 14, 1976 issue’s “Farm Forecast” reported that the drought plaguing the eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, northern and western Iowa, eastern Nebraska and parts of Missouri had the makings of the “Dirty Thirties,” according to the National Weather Service.

Early Harvest According to our Oct. 14, 1976, issue, southern Minnesota area elevators reported an early harvest — three weeks early in Blooming Prairie — with better-than-expected yields. At the Wells elevator, the soybean yield was estimated at almost 45 bushels per acre. “Nobody’s selling,” said Myron Kloos of the Wells Famers Elevator, “It’s going to be $3 a bushel before long.”

Minnesota brewery, hop acreage counts on rise

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. PAUL, Minn. — Nothing goes better with bratwurst, a grilled pork chop or slow-cooked pulled pork than beer. Thanks to the craft beer explosion, there are many Minnesota-made brews to choose from.

Sean Cooke is field quality manager of the Better Beer Society of Minnesota. “There are now over 100 breweries in Minnesota and it is growing constantly. Two years ago we were at about 60,” said Cooke.

With 5.5 million people in Minnesota, this brewery fever can and will keep growing, according to Cooke.

“There’s lots of room to grow,” he said. “After the big drop in breweries due to prohibition legislation in 1908, we didn’t reach that number again until 2013. In that time span, the U.S. population tripled. So if we’re talking per capita consumption of what we

used to be, we’re at only about onethird of that today.”

“I don’t think our brewery count will stop until we have a brewery in every neighborhood,” said Cooke.

Breweries come in all sizes from large breweries such as Schell’s and Summit to a Wisconsin brewery that only brews one barrel per day.

“One barrel is two kegs, so it perhaps is the smallest brewery in America at this date,” he said.

Hops farming Most hops for major breweries is still being grown out West. Oregon and Idaho are the major hops-producing states with 50,000 acres total.

“But there’s no denying that Minnesota’s booming craft beer industry has created a huge demand for hops,” Cooke said, “that special ingredient that provides the suds with bitter, citric and zesty flavors and aromas. Right now,

It takes about three years for hop vines to start producing.

John Brach, owner of Stone Hill Farm near Stillwater and president of

the Minnesota Hop Growers Association, is working to build a hops industry in the Upper Midwest.

“There was never a market for Minnesota-grown hops until the craft brewing industry took off. But we’re now getting more hops into the pipeline each year,” said Brach.

Erick Sannerud, co-founder of Mighty Axe Hops in Ham Lake is part of a team of entrepreneurs that planted its first 20 plants four years ago. This year, they are growing 40,000 and building a production facility as well.

“We’re trying to mature hops production where it produces enough hops to supply livelihoods,” said Sannerud.

Sannerud and his partner intend to grow hops on 80 acres in Benton County, northeast of St. Cloud. They planted their first 40 acres this summer.

Brach said it costs about $10,000 per acre to establish a hop yard including the trellises, plants and irrigation system. But he also indicated successful growers can generate between $10,000 and $20,000 per acre each year depending upon variety and quality, before paying expenses.

“The rule of thumb is that it takes about five years before you start seeing a return on your investment,” said Brach.

Collaboration Competition among breweries remains friendly as everyone knows each other in this emerging industry, said Cooke.

One place where the breweries get together to promote their craft brews is the Land of 10,000 Beers exhibit in the Minnesota State Fair Agriculture/Horticulture building. The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild has been at the State Fair for four years. Beer tasting has become a major thrust.

“We do a showcase of all our Minnesota breweries,” said Cooke.

The display allows fair-goers to see just how big the brewery industry is becoming and maybe find a new favorite brew.

“We have a giant billboard that identifies by map the location of each brewer,” Cooke said. “People are amazed to see the great diversity across the landscape.”

2016 was the first year that the Better Beer Society of Minnesota participated at the State Fair.

“We manage the quality control program which assures that all craft beer providers do indeed have a quality product,” said Cooke. “Two of us with the Craft Guild are tasting our way through all the beers that are part of this classic event. We want to ensure that people are sipping a cold beer of high quality.”

Fortunately this quality control has a lot to do with smell and special odors. It doesn’t mean sampling a pint at every dispenser.

USDA offers immediate disaster assistance ST. PAUL, Minn. — U.S. Department of Agriculture Minnesota Farm Service Agency executive director, Grant Herfindahl, reminds farmers and ranchers of federal farm program benefits which may be available to help eligible producers recover from recent heavy rains and flooding.

FSA offers disaster assistance and low-interest loan programs to assist agricultural producers in their recovery efforts following floods or similar qualifying natural disasters. Available programs and loans include: The Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program provides financial assistance to producers of non-insurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory, or prevented planting occur due to natural disasters (includes native grass for grazing). Eligible producers must have purchased NAP coverage for 2015 crops.

The Livestock Indemnity Program offers payments for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather. Eligible losses may include those caused by hurricanes, floods, blizzards, wildfires, tropical storms, tornados, light-

ning, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Producers will be required to provide verifiable documentation of death losses resulting from an eligible adverse weather event and must submit a notice of loss to their local FSA office within 30 calendar days of when the loss of livestock is apparent.

The Tree Assistance Program provides assistance for qualifying tree, shrub and vine losses due to natural disaster.

The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program provides emergency relief for losses due to feed or water shortages, disease, adverse weather, or other conditions, which are not adequately addressed by other disaster programs. ELAP covers physically damaged or destroyed livestock feed that was purchased or mechanically harvested forage or feedstuffs intended for use as feed for the producer's eligible livestock. In order to be considered eligible, harvested forage must be baled; forage that is only cut, raked or windrowed is not eligible. Producers must submit a notice of loss to their local FSA office within 30 calendar days of when the loss is appar-

ent. ELAP also covers up to 150 lost grazing days in instances when a producer has been forced to remove livestock from a grazing pasture due to floodwaters. For beekeepers, ELAP covers beehive losses (the physical structure) in instances where the hive has been destroyed by a natural disaster including flooding, high winds and tornadoes.

The Emergency Loan Program is available to producers with agriculture operations located in a county under a primary or contiguous Secretarial Disaster designation. These low interest loans help producers recover from production and physical losses due to drought, flooding.

The Emergency Conservation Program provides emergency funding for farmers and ranchers to rehabilitate land severely damaged by natural disasters; includes fence loss.

Palmer amaranth detected in Yellow Medicine County ST. PAUL, Minn. — Crop scientists at the University of Minnesota and officials at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture urge farmers to check fields for Palmer amaranth, an aggressive weed which can put corn and soybean crops at risk. A plant detected in a native seed planting plot on a Yellow Medicine County farm was confirmed recently to be Palmer amaranth. This is the first confirmation of the weed in the state.

Palmer amaranth can grow 2 to 3 inches a day, typically reaching 6 to 8 feet, or more, in height.

Left uncontrolled, a single female Palmer amaranth plant typically produces 100,000 to 500,000 seeds. It is resistant to multiple herbicides.

The weed is on MDA’s prohibited-eradicated noxious weed list, requiring all above- and below-ground parts of the plant be destroyed. Transportation, propagation or sale of the plants is prohibited.

Landowners and growers should scout their fields with a particular focus on native seed planting areas. Look for pigweed plants that have a seed head several feet long and the female inflorescence has spiny bracts that are sharp to the touch. Also in a majority of the leaves, the petioles (the structure attaching the leaf to the stem), when folded over the leaf, are longer than the leaf.

for identification followed by destroying the plants in question. If the population is small in number, handweed, place the plants in a large paper bag and remove it from the field to a site where you can burn the plant.

For a larger population of plants in an affected area at this stage of the weed’s life cycle, mow the area and clean off the mower on-site to prevent the spread of any weed seed shed onto the mower. Mowing does not kill the entire plant but it will keep the seed on the ground in the affected area where insects and rodents can feed on the seed and mowing will reduce movement away from the affected area. Also, any seed that germinates next year will have to compete with the more established plants that surround it.

“I know there are railroad buffs that travel hundreds of miles to see that Smokey Mountain railroad building. And when you get inside you can’t leave so fast. It just fascinates you with all the small trains, the villages, the scenery. I’ve had folks tell me they

spend 12 hours at the fair and four hours just in the railroad display,” she shared.

Gough has plans to be at the 2017 Clay County Fair for its centennial year. “They’ve already asked me to come back next year,” she said. “And I said that if I’m still above ground, I’ll be here.”

Well, she’s 67 years old and a joy for everyone, so why not? ❖

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer SPENCER, Iowa — With 35 years on the job at the Clay County Fair, Barb Gough is known as “Grandma” to exhibitors and livestock people who need a forklift, bales of hay, straw, or whatever else necessary to make the 10-day event Barb Gough a great show.

Her work station is a small wooden cage leading up to the animal barns. What does she do?

“Well, I answer questions as best as I can,” she admitted, “where is this, where is that. This fair covers 40 acres, so it takes some time for folks to know exactly what barn, what parking lot, what toilet, even what place to eat. Plus, I take the orders for the hay and straw the livestock people need. Also I schedule the forklift for exhibitors … so they get unloaded and loaded out with not too big of a fuss.

“Then I stay here after the fair for the two to three days of loading out. That forklift gets lots of use. It’s a free service to all exhibitors, but only on a request basis.”

— Barb Gough Gough lives in Sioux City and brings her own camper to the fair. She related that she and her husband attended the fair each year, traveling in their 40-foot diesel pusher (rear engine) motor home.

When her husband passed away, Gough just decided to keep coming and volunteered to help because it truly is a special three-week outing for her.

Gough hasn’t run across any challenges that she can’t handle with some help. “If I can’t figure it out, I’ve usually got two or three guys working with me that can,” she said.

Grandma Gough has some treats at her booth. “If anyone is thirsty, or needs a treat, I have water, some pop, and always a few fresh cookies which I pick up each morning. These goodies keep the guys sweet and nice to me,” said Gough with a wink.

She didn’t guess on how many volunteers help out during the fair, but thought it seemed like fewer this year. However, there are lots of volunteers working with the parking, traffic flow and various other chores.

“We have lots of people coming in from it seems like four or five states,” said Gough. “Even people coming up from our State Fair at Des Moines and tell me, ‘Oh, your fair is so much nicer. Everyone is so friendly and it’s not so big that you can’t see it all in one day.’”

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer SPENCER, Iowa — If your livestock are part of livestock shows across the United States, chances are Sullivan Supply has provided products used to dress up your livestock. In operation since 1989, this stock show supply outfit, with headquarters in Dunlap, has expanded to stores in Hillsboro, Texas, and Lodi, Calif.

Dave Sullivan did business from a mobile livestock product store at the Clay County Fair in Spencer.

“This fair is a terrific livestock show,” he said.

“We’re here with a supply trailer and virtually every product a livestock person needs. The Iowa State Fair is even bigger for us simply because there’s even more livestock.”

Sullivan brought lots of products — easily over 400 different items.

“The livestock people are particular. They’ve gone to the expense and time of preparing their critters for these shows. So any extra touch to impress the judges and the potential buyers is their agenda at these shows,” Sullivan said.

Big sellers for Sullivan Supply at livestock fairs are shampoos, hair sprays, dyes to color the cattle, special glues to build up body hair on legs, and special paints to highlight what needs to be highlighted. On hot days, exhibitors want lots of fans.

Show boxes are a great item. And of course, ropes, halters, and special harnesses.

They’re willing to pay that extra dollar to dress up their critters, that dairy heifer, their market pigs, even their rabbits and chickens.

“Show Bloom is a protein supplement that helps hair growth,” Sullivan explained. “Fresh & Feminine helps clean up those sloppy briskets. Putting a glimmer on each animal is what show business is all about.”

And Sullivan Supply works to make that glimmer something special.

For example, here’s the pitch on Sure Coat: “Promotes hair growth in a flake free formula. Natural oils geared for feeding hair follicles, nutrient molecules in the product are small enough to be absorbed by the hair shaft.”

The number-one selling item at the Clay County Fair was paint.

“The livestock people are great at dressing up their animals,” said Sullivan. “They’ll clip their hair.

They’ll glue the legs so that leg hair is just perfectly aligned, smooth and straight looking. If that glue covers up the natural color of the hair, they’ll brush over to get back to the natural color. Judges know this; so do livestock dealers ... but it’s all part of the show.”

Different colored ropes are also popular for showing and decorating booths.

“I believe we’re up to eight different colors for ropes this year,” he said. “People are nuts about special colors for their livestock ropes and in the decorating of their display booth, their equipment chests and sometimes just jazzing up their ribbons, pictures

of the livestock farm, even pictures of the earlier generations that started a particular family livestock legacy. It’s just a matter of taste, and you know full well taste is always changing.”

While winning a livestock show is exciting, show winners also help producers build their reputation.

“They’re here not just to win the class their livestock are competing in, but also the bigger recognitions of grand champion and supreme championships,” Sullivan added. “If they win, the offspring of these winning animals becomes that much more valuable.”

Summer is a toiling, but generally rewarding, season for livestock supply outfits. Sullivan, after wrapping up eight days at the Clay County Fair, was heading to Tyler, Texas, for a four-day livestock expo; and then the big one in Dallas for the Texas State Fair which has a three-week run to the end of October.

Sullivan said his company attends about 20 percent of state shows across the United States, but dealers complete the circuit in the eastern states plus the far west. Even with livestock prices in the doldrums, Sullivan Supply isn’t feeling the pinch in the show business of livestock.

“The purebred livestock people are a different business agenda. They’re here to show their livestock.

Advertising is just simply basic to their business,” Sullivan said.

“And if their little kids are in 4-H and FFA livestock shows, then you just have another level of opportunity. Yes, they’re willing to pay that extra dollar to dress up their critters, that dairy heifer, their market pigs, even their rabbits and chickens.

They know very well what show business is all about and that in a nutshell is why we do good at these events — regardless the price of pork or beef on the hoof.” ❖

So why is there such a challenge in getting the renewable fuels standard up to E15? Niuwenhuis said he believes the challenge is coming from the Environmental Protection Agency and its Environmental Technology Initiative.

“We’ve proven we have a safe, clean product. It’s biodegradable, nontoxic and cleaner-burning. I’m told the nearly 15 billion gallons of ethanol produced in 2015 reduced greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 41.2 million metric tons,” he said. “That’s like removing 8.4 million cars from our roads! Plus, seldom mentioned is the fact that ethanol production requires less water than gasoline production by a three to one margin.”

Naysayers, however, complain that this aggressive growth of the corn industry is detrimental to the rural landscape of America. Nieuwenhuis responded, “It’s amazing, but we now use 2 percent fewer inputs, yet we’re now producing 260 percent more crop than we did back in the 1950s. We’ve done a tremendous

job of putting technology to work in everything we do on our farms. We’re mapping as we plant. Then, as we harvest, we’re getting yield data on these same maps which helps us pinpoint input strategies for the next season.”

Some ethanol facts: • Iowa has 41 ethanol plants plus two cellulosic plants. Iowa produces about 30 percent of all U.S. ethanol. Currently, Iowa is producing about 3.9 billion gallons of ethanol per year.

• Minnesota has 20 ethanol plants plus one biobutanol plant. Minnesota produces slightly over 1 billion gallons of ethanol yearly. Minnesota has the most E85 stations in the United States • Ethanol plants are now found in 29 states. The industry employs 85,967 direct jobs, 271,440 indirect and induced jobs. The industry creates $44 billion in gross domestic product nationally and generates $24 billion in household income; at the same time generating $10 billion in tax revenue.

The United States is the world’s leading producer of ethanol, generating nearly twice as much ethanol as Brazil, the No. 2 producer. The U.S. industry was responsible for about 55 percent of global ethanol output in 2015 and exported approximately 850 million gallons. Canada is the leading market for U. S. exports accounting for 30 percent of total shipments. Brazil, China, South Korea and the Philippines are other leading markets. About 28 million gallons were shipped to European countries in 2015. ❖

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer SPENCER, Iowa — Ethanol is now blended into 97 percent of the gasoline used in the United States, accounts for 10 percent of the U.S. gasoline supply and has 200 U.S. plants producing nearly 15 billion gallons of ethanol. One would Kelly expect the move to E15 is just Nieuwenhuis around the corner. But not quite so fast.

“Our ethanol market is gradually growing,” said Kelly Nieuwenhuis, District No. 1 director of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. “But the critics of this most amazing story about renewable fuels in America are still active.”

Interviewed at the Iowa Corn Growers’ impressive display at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Nieuwenhuis indicated people are getting better educated about ethanol fuels. “There no longer is any concern about the safety of ethanol,” he said. “We’re at E10 now and pushing for E15 as the next step in our national renewable fuels standards.”

Nieuwenhuis revealed three new ethanol plants are projected. “Ring Neck Ethanol Plant, Oneida, S.D., is funded, but construction is yet to begin,” he said. “That plant may be a dual feed stocks plant — both grain sorghum and corn. The impact of an ethanol plant in a community is impressive. Here in Iowa, the impact on GDP (gross domestic product) is $4.2 billion. Wages at our 41 Iowa ethanol plants are $2 billion a year. So it’s a huge contributor to the economy of Iowa.”

Nieuwenhuis pointed out that farmers enjoy some marketing bonuses too. “Where there are ethanol plants, you have stronger basis for corn pricing,” he explained. “And you don’t need to be a producer member of an ethanol plant to share in this added value. Some plants are shareholder operations which means you don’t even need to be a corn producer. The ethanol industry has been huge for Iowa totally, both farmers and non-farmers.”

He noted that 2004 to 2012 represented eight consecutive years when corn production was in the black. “That was when and why I got into the ethanol industry,” Nieuwenhuis said. “Those were mostly good years for livestock producers too. We get 2.8 to 3.0 gallons of ethanol from each bushel of corn and we still have nearly 40 percent of the feed value of that bushel of corn in the by-products (distillers dried grains) from the ethanol production.

“Yet change and improvement is always happening within the industry. For example, many are now spinning the corn oil out of the process and making biodiesel. Some are producing such a fine process that it is food grade which moves it into an even higher value-added by-product.”

Nieuwenhuis mentioned Little Sioux Processors in Marcus is producing three gallons per bushel routinely. “They are one of the top in the nation,” he said.

“Yet even now, they continue to try different enzymes and other tactics which might generate even a fraction higher yield. It takes keen thinkers running your ethanol plant. I’d wager the Little Sioux team samples their product a dozen times a day.”

Education, hard work is key for successful farming

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer SPENCER, Iowa — Any gathering of farmers these days usually includes some argument about breakeven prices. Iowa corn producer Jon Wilcke is no exception except Wilcke is also a loan officer at his local bank so he stays close to these break-even debates.

The Land interviewed Wilcke at the Clay County Fair in Spencer. He discussed the trend line in the breakeven figure and when it may begin to work in favor of the farmer.

“The break-evens are coming down because rents are coming down slowly. There’s always a lag time,” Wilcke said. “And I don’t think they’ll be down to where they need to be by the end of this year. Farmers just need to know where their individual break-evens are and then set some goals to try to achieve those prices.

Sometimes we do get them, but we don’t get enough of our crop marketed at those prices.”

A tougher question for this farmer/banker is how many farmers actually know their break-evens.

“Unfortunately not very many,” said Wilcke.

He added that if they do know, they don’t post it and keep track because it often is a moving target as grain markets and input costs are variable, sometimes on a weekly, even daily basis.

Even for those folks who don’t have much debt, the cash flows have gotten to the point where they can’t sustain their living expenses.

Jon Wilcke Wilcke explained what usually happens is when a grower knows his break-even is $3.80 and has a chance to market at $4.10. Then talk ramps up to $4.75 and $5.

“Often they lose track of their own situation and miss that opportunity because these changes happen so quickly in today’s volatile ag world,” he said.

Land cost and cash rent are major issues in determining break-evens.

Wilcke indicated $275 to $300 per acre is the current rent in his area of Woodbury County. He recalls cash rents bumping beyond $500 two years ago, but most of that is in the $325 range today.

“I would say average in our area is now $270-$290,” said Wilcke, “but we’re hoping it gets under $250 and closer to $225 for next year. Even $200 would certainly help restart these break-evens in favor of the farmer.”

Wilcke’s cautious about landowners going along with these concessions.

— Jon Wilcke “Even for those folks who don’t have much debt, the cash flows have gotten to the point where they can’t sustain their living expenses. So they’re less willing to take on that extra farm which might now be available.”

Wilcke outlined other key factors that are working down cost-of-production expenses.

“Fertilizer prices are coming down,” Wilcke said. “Some squeezing on seed prices is likely also. Most farmers use the 179 depreciation schedule to avoid paying taxes on their equipment costs.

But they are often amazed at how much their family living expenses have gone up over the past 10 years. Minnesota Farm Management System has good data. They show average farm living costs close to $80,000! Most of the blue collar workers in town don’t make close to that, even with both members of the family working. So bottom line is, we all have to adjust our budgets back and that’s a difficult thing to do.

“Ten years ago, none of us had satellite dishes, nor four to five cell phones per family. Now we see people with cell phone bills as big as our house payments were 10 years ago.”

Wilcke offered some unorthodox advice to young people who want to enter farming.

“When customers ask me should they send their kids to junior college or a four-year ag college to help make them better farmers, I sometimes jokingly advise their kids to get a job at a meat packing company for six months,” he said. “After that, they’ll do everything they can to avoid going back to the packing plant because that’s hard work.

Plus they’ll have the work experience of a different boss. It’s generally good to have a work experience other than their dad for a few months.

“They quickly realize that farming is a business and they need to do everything they can to get good at it. That means going to marketing meetings; it means learning about options and how to put them to work in marketing; and besides production strategies, they should learn about accounting and

bookwork too. There are so many facets to farming today ... it’s much more than becoming a talented GPS driver of your farm equipment.”

Wilcke is 58 years old and first attended Morningside College in Sioux City. He then got his MBA at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.

He works at MetaBank in Storm Lake.

His home town is Danbury and he farms in Woodbury County where he also ran a cow-calf operation until December of last year.

“We got into our own farm in 1992,” Wilcke reflected. “That was after helping my parents on their farm for 10 years after college while working fulltime. We’d always been tied to agriculture ... and that usually meant vacation days were helping mom and dad. Today my son, who is an engineer, also wants to get into farming with ambitions of becoming a full-time farmer eventually.

People retire, farms become available and maybe that will work for him.”

Being both a banker and a farmer, Wilcke doesn’t anticipate any particular change in people’s attitudes or understanding about food production regardless of the November election.

“We’re such a small minority anymore,” he said. “I have family members only one generation removed from their rural background. Their world today is computers and electronics.

They just don’t relate to where and how their food needs are provided.”

Wilcke chuckled at the possibility of being a political candidate himself. He did share this wisdom: “Our goal should be to bring people together rather than dividing people.”

Wilcke doesn’t credit media with any favors toward agriculture. “We’re dirtying the water, we’re spreading the manure carelessly, we’re using antibiotics that make people sick. Lots of negatives out there. We’re got to do a better job of educating the public about this amazing business called agriculture,” he said.

Wilcke still considers farming hard work, especially if livestock is involved.

“Mentally, the challenges are huge in agriculture. And always the unpredictable is how the weatherman treats you from year to year, season to season, even week by week.”

When talking with a corn producer, a question on yield prospects is a good ending. And Wilcke said he is confident that 200 bushel yields will be the standard in his part of Iowa this year. ❖

Once again it has not been a great couple of weeks for the livestock markets. The struggle between supply and demand continues favoring the lack of demand as the source of the continued price weakness. This struggle is likely to continue with the demand for livestock products being the main feature in determining the price direction in both the cattle and hog markets.

As far as the cattle market is concerned, the steady drop in demand for beef products has been an ongoing process for several years. It appears to be leveling off at the present time. If this is the case when cattle numbers are at a period of lower overall numbers, then what kind of pressure comes when the cattle herd increases?

With pork and poultry prices well below beef prices per pound at the retail level, it seems beef will struggle to maintain current price levels. On the bright side, the market is on the oversold side in a technical picture and could see some price improvement in the short run. However, in the long-term picture, with ailing world economies and an increasing supply, albeit a slow process, it appears that the cattle market still has some downside risk. Therefore producers should continue to monitor market conditions and protect inventories when the opportunities arise.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Sept. 30.

CORN — December corn was confined to a small 9.25 cent trading range leading up to the Sept.

30 Grains Stocks as of Sept. 1 report, but traded a 12.5 cent range on report day alone! Upside moves for the week were limited by harvest progress, improving yield reports and a slightly uptrending U.S. dollar index, while downside movement was constrained by light grower sales. Trading was dull until the report, and volume in the December contract the day before the stocks report was the second-lowest since early June. PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. End of month and quarter, plus St. Paul the stocks report, brought money into the market to end the week with a key reversal higher in December corn. Whether the upside can be extended into a clearer harvest week is yet to be determined.

Corn stocks as of Sept. 1 were 1.738 billion bushels with 36 percent on-farm and 64 percent off-farm.

This was marginally lower than the 1.754 billion bushel trade estimate and about on par with last year’s 1.731 billion bushels. The market reacted positively to a neutral report and technically tested the $3.34 area where the 10, 20 and 50 day moving averages were converging. It’s interesting that all wheat stocks were at the upper end of projections at 2.527 billion bushels versus 2.402 billion estimated. This suggests wheat feeding was not as great as many thought.

Soybean growers are filling existing contracts NYSTROM, from pg. 19 to excellent, and is unusually high for this time of year. This rating is waning in importance as yield reports hit the headlines. Corn was 73 percent mature versus 64 percent on average. Corn harvest was 15 percent as of Sept. 25, running 4 percent behind average, but only 1 percent behind last year. By Oct. 2, harvest is anticipated to reach 20 percent to 25 percent complete. Recent yield reports are improving from earlier statements, but many still anticipate a slightly lower corn yield on the Oct. 12 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.

Weekly export sales were a disappointment at just 22.6 million bushels. Total commitments of 730 million bushels are 76 percent ahead of last year and we have already committed 34 percent of the total projected exports for this year. Next week’s numbers will be better after the U.S. Department of Agriculture published, in their daily reporting system, the sale of 1.04 million metric tons of 2016-17 corn and 540,000 metric tons of new crop corn to Mexico. The total Mexican sale was the fourth-highest sales announcement ever!

Weekly ethanol production at 989,000 barrels per day was up 8,000 bpd from the previous week.

Ethanol stocks increased from 841 million gallons to 864 million gallons in the week ending Sept. 23.

According to the government, ethanol captured a record 10.2 percent share of the gasoline market in the United States.

China is implementing a 10 percent anti-subsidy import tariff on U.S. dried distillers grains. This is in addition to a 34 percent anti-dumping tariff announced last week. China is also allowing at least two state-owned companies to export up to 2 mmt of corn. For this to work, it is expected to take some

sort of subsidy paid to the exporter by the Chinese government. A 13 percent rebate to exporters has been discussed in the trade. The last time China exported significant amounts of corn was in 2006-07 when they sold nearly 5 mmt. Over the last year, China’s corn prices have fallen 20 percent. Any export market share China gains would come at the expense of the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Ukraine.

OPEC reached an agreement this week to limit oil production to 32.5 million barrels per day, which is down from their current 33.4 million barrels per day production. There is skepticism this deal will come to fruition. Iraq says their production is being underestimated. Three countries exempt from production cuts would be Iran, Nigeria and Libya. The deal is set to be finalized at their next official meeting in November.

OUTLOOK: December corn closed the week with a key reversal higher as money movement ran the market higher in post-report trading, despite the fact the report was neutral and we have a good harvest weekend coming. December corn closed the week just .25 cents higher at $3.36.75 per bushel.

The July corn contract was up .75 cents at $3.60.25 per bushel. If we see upside follow-through, the next resistance in the December corn is $3.41 to $3.42 per bushel. Nearby support is the old resistance at $3.34 per bushel, then $3.23.25 per bushel. As harvest speeds up and if we see improving yield reports, rally potential should be limited.

SOYBEANS — The week began with double-digit losses after a decent harvest weekend with huge yields reported. Trade chatter centers on the real possibility of even higher record yields yet to come, maybe in the 51-52 bushels per acre (or higher?) range.

The USDA announced soybean sales every day during the week which helped limit the downside.

Sales were reported to both China and unknown through the week ahead of China’s Golden Week beginning Oct. 1. China’s crush rate for August was 8.1 mmt, a new monthly record for August and was the first time the monthly crush ever exceeded 8 mmt. November soybeans did make a new low for the move when they hit $9.34 per bushel on Sept. 27.

The Grain Stocks report released on Sept. 30 was neutral for the soybeans. Soybean stocks were 197 million bushels versus 201 million estimated and 191 million bushels last year. Of the total stocks, 21 percent were on-farm and 79 percent were off-farm.

The 2015 soybean crop was revised 2.8 million bushels lower to 3.926 billion bushels which was reflected in a 2 million bushel increase in ending stocks to 197 million bushels from the September WASDE report showing 195 million in ending stocks.

TEALE, from pg. 19 The hog market is very similar to the cattle market from a fundamental standpoint. The fact that there are more hogs and demand has been slipping as the pork cutout rises, reflects the slack demand for pork at higher prices. On the technical picture, hogs are oversold and have been for some time. So far, this has not stopped the downward pressure on prices. Given the amount of pork in cold storage, the supply of pork products seem more than adequate to meet current demand. The export market has dropped off, thus reducing the amount of pork for export.

It is apparent, like the cattle market, the hog market is being dominated by the demand side of the supply/demand equation. This still does not mean that we will not see rallies in the future, but until the supply of hogs weaken or demand for pork increases, hog prices could continue to deteriorate.

Producers are requested to watch market conditions and protect inventories when available. ❖

The week began with doubledigit losses after a decent harvest weekend with huge (soybean) yields reported. Trade chatter centers on the real possibility of even higher record yields yet to come, maybe in the 51-52 bushels per acre (or higher?) range.

Weekly export sales were at the high end of pretrade estimates at 62.2 million bushels, bringing total commitments to 959 million bushels and 27 percent higher than last year. We need to average 22 million bushels of sales per week to achieve the USDA’s 1.985 billion bushel export forecast. We have committed 48 percent of the total 1.985 billion bushels forecasted by USDA for export this year.

China’s purchases so far this year are 11.1 mmt and well behind the 2014 pace of 17.3 mmt.

Soybean conditions as of Sept. 25 were unchanged at 73 percent good/excellent — still unusually strong for this week of the crop year. Soybean harvest was 10 percent complete versus 13 percent on average and is 7 percent behind last year’s pace. Dropping leaves was at 68 percent versus 64 percent on average.

Brazil’s ABIOVE (their crushing association) pegged the Brazilian bean crop at 101.3 mmt compared to USDA’s 101 mmt outlook. ABIOVE is forecasting exports at 57 mmt, slightly below the 57.7 mmt USDA projection.

OUTLOOK: Grower selling has been light as existing contracts get filled, resulting in little fresh hedge pressure thus far. Production estimates are rising, so we should see increasing hedge pressure as harvest moves forward, containing any meaningful rally in the short run. For the week, November soybeans were down a penny at $9.54 and the July soybeans were up .25 cents at $9.77.25 per bushel. The next support in the November contract is $9.34 with resistance at $9.61.5 and $9.73 per bushel. The next WASDE report is Oct. 12.

Nystrom’s Notes: Contract changes for the week ending Sept. 30: December Chicago wheat fell 2.75 cents, Minneapolis rallied 10.75 cents and Kansas City dropped 6 cents. November crude oil was up $3.76 on talk of an OPEC production freeze, ULSD rallied 12 cents, RBOB jumped 10.75 cents higher and natural gas declined 10.75 cents. Mid-afternoon on Sept. 30, the U.S. dollar index was up .028 points for the week. ❖

Clearly establish valuations, terms for divorce, disability what then is the plan of action and what’s the trigger? Once that’s determined, what’s the next step?

A buy out? What would be an acceptable return on their equity? What are the terms?

If so, is there an agreement describing the parameters of a lease agreement including annual rate, renewal process, and termination provisions? If there are disputes, is there a dispute resolution process in place that involves a mediator or an arbitrator to settle them?

Even when things are going smoothly, circumstances change. If you are renting from a former spouse and they need to liquidate the property, will you be offered a “first right of refusal” or at least, be in the game to purchase the property when it goes on the market? If you have a son or daughter in the business, would they be considered a preferred buyer?

One common vehicle often used to protect equity in divorce situations is a “vesting” or “discount” schedule” including a “claw-back provision.” If a successor has earned equity in a business, but is not “vested” in ownership, the equity is not available to the divorcing spouse and can be retained by the individual remaining in the business as equity which they one day will be 100 percent vested in.

Disability: Another triggering event which can impact your business is disability. It’s vital to spend time with your attorney and insurance experts to discuss how to professionally manage this risk.

There needs to be an agreed-upon definition for the term “disability.”

Unending equipment issues seem to be the theme on the Lee farm this year and the corn chopper was no exception. The Land spoke with Joan Lee on Sept. 22 as she was frustrated with equipment breakdowns — especially this harvest season.

Lee’s husband Mark had trouble with the corn chopper, then it was Lee’s turn, “Sunday I broke a feeder chain and lost it in the field.

Luckily we had another one on hand.” Lee finished chopping corn on Sept. 21.

“All the wagons are cleaned up and we parked them in the shed last night,” she said. As for the rest of the corn: “We have a fair amount left to combine; it’s still fairly green.” Lee believes that it will be awhile before the corn is ready.

The soybeans are “ready to go,” Lee said. For beans to be ready now, that’s “fairly early up here.” Lee’s all set to tackle the beans, which they could start combining this week. “That’s our next adventure.” Though with chances of rain in the forecast “that will be a deciding factor of when we start or how much we get done.”

With falling temperatures in the forecast and a light frost already on Sept. 14, fall has arrived. Lee is ready to get the rest of harvest underway with no more equipment issues (finger and toes crossed!)

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa September 29 Farming is full of twists and turns, ups and downs and this harvest season is no exception. The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Sept.

29 and he reported this year’s soybean crop has done what he wasn’t expecting with yields that are some of the best ever. Moser admits he was surprised with how well the beans have been yielding, “so far, I’ve been proven wrong.” Yields are in the “upper 70s to low 80s coming out of the field,” he reported. The “pods are all ready, we’re going after it.”

Corn earlage “yields are above expectations.” As for grain corn, there’s “not a lot of corn going out yet.” However, there are “some guys that have started on corn before beans due to stock issues.”

“We’ve got good dry weather; we’re going to make some good progress,” he said. The harvest continues to roll on, crushing yield expectations and putting smiles on many faces out in the combines.

Moser sees the positive yield results on the beans but “I can’t put my finger on why beans are doing so good.” Only time will tell if yield results this favorable occur with grain corn as well. With dry weather conditions and potential best-ever yields, this harvest is shaping up to be a very promising one.

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

September 22 “Wheat is done.” Andy Pulk finished the wheat on Sept. 20, but there’s no rest for the weary, as harvest now turns to soybeans. The Land spoke with Pulk on Sept. 22 as he was “ready to start soybeans today.” With rain in the forecast for the weekend, Pulk is going to cover as many acres as he can before the rain hits. He said he is “hoping we can get 200 to 300 acres by tomorrow.”

While Pulk has yet to harvest his beans, area farmers are reporting that “yield numbers are favorable.” With all the rain there was “plenty of August moisture to fill pods out.”

Pulk expects that bean ground farther north won’t produce as good of yields due to standing water.

Fall temperatures have arrived on the Pulk farm with the thermometer dipping down to 35 degrees on Sept. 13. The lows overnight now are in the 40s to 50s F. This growing season has been a wet one, with 54 days of measurable rain since May 23. Pulk noted that’s almost 50 percent.

All the rain means corn harvest will be delayed as the crop is behind. The corn “needs extra time.” Pulk expects to be combining late into the fall — something he said, “I’m not really looking forward to.” Once the corn is ready for harvest: “I’m hoping we can have the corn off and the ground black in 15 days.”

Drier, warmer weather would be ideal to give the corn some extra time and give Pulk a little more optimism for a better corn crop and harvest.

John Nielsen, Albert Lea, Minn.

September 29

The soybean crop looks very promising out in the field; the problem is John Nielsen can’t get out to the field. The Land spoke with Nielsen on Sept. 29 as the rain continues to hamper the start of bean harvest. “We had 5 to 7 inches of rain last week,” he reported. There are currently potholes in the fields. Nielsen said he believes all this rain won’t be that much of a yield robber, but it will take time for fields to be ready to combine. The beans themselves are dry enough; it’s just a matter of getting into the field to get them harvested. “It’s disheartening,” Nielsen said. The rain also brought with it some strong winds which resulted in “wind damage on a hog set-up.”

The “other issue is getting this manure out; our pits are full.” Once field conditions improve, getting the manure in the field will be a priority.

Nielsen is going to “try a few beans” today and said he is hopeful that “maybe we can start going a little by little.” Nielsen “might even take some corn before beans.” His focus will be on whatever fields are ready.

With no rain forecasted until Oct. 5, Nielsen is hoping the weather will dry out the fields quickly. Harvest is usually done by deer season for Nielsen.

This year he can’t perceive that happening. The wet conditions have “definitely thrown a wrench in the whole (harvest) planning,” he said.

FFA and 4-H work together easily and smoothly at Clay County Fair.

According to Dalager, Clay County has three schools with FFA programs.

Both 4-H and FFA exhibit their livestock together.

“We have an amazing relationship with our FFA partners,” Dalager said.

“There are several shows that they run. There are also a number of shows that we run. We work very well together. There are a number of kids that will show in one class as a 4-H member, then in another class as an FFA member.”

This is Dalager’s eighth year working with the youth of Clay County.

“I work with fundraising, partnerships programs and our many volunteers. Plus I work with an amazing staff. I plan to be here for a long time,” she said.

Youth from 44 counties in Iowa and Minnesota participated in the 2016 fair. The total 4-H/FFA exhibitors were 850.

“Including all the many other categories, we did about 4,000 entries total,” Dalager said. “The beef show dominates with the youth. Out of those 850 total exhibitors, 260 of them showed beef!” ❖

Dalager noted that shifts are taking place in 4-H youth programs due to declining farm numbers, but there are some remedies.

Blast from the past: Wagner Dairy 30 years later

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor LITCHFIELD, Minn. — Julie Wagner was 4 years old when she appeared on The Land cover on Jan. 23, 1987. With a Jersey calf by her side, she was photographed on her family’s dairy, Wagner Dairy, near Litchfield.

“I don’t think we have that bull calf anymore,” said Leonard Wagner, Julie’s dad, with a smile.

But Julie can still be found at the family dairy.

She is 34 years old and goes by Julie WagnerThompson since she married Rick Thompson. With their two young boys, they live one house west from where she grew up. She still helps out on the farm and her future farmers, August, 4, and Lennox, almost 2, spend plenty of time there. August likes the cows while Lennox joyfully throws feed to the calves.

So what was going on that night in 1987? Chores, said Julie’s mom, Lee Ann Wagner.

“She always fed the baby cows,” said Lee Ann. “Always chores on the farm.”

At 2-3 years old, Julie’s favorite cow was Lady who always laid her head on Julie’s shoulder. Then there were Julie’s show cows. Julie was in 4-H starting with Cloverbuds before switching to FFA at Litchfield High School, where she was president of the local chapter.

When asked if she was a dairy princess, she said with a laugh “Who wasn’t?” Julie was a dairy princess in 1999 and 2000, as well as Meeker County Dairy Ambassador. She made it to the regional level but couldn’t compete any further because she had to milk on competition day. Such is life on a dairy farm.

Like most kids raised on a dairy farm, Julie drank raw milk. Many a time, she was sent to the bulk tank to get a couple pitchers of milk for supper.

“Now we buy it at Wal-Mart because you can’t get it out of the bulk tank anymore,” said Julie.

The spigot is too big and it comes out too fast. But she did make some delicious ice cream with it last summer.

Wagner Dairy today Wagner Dairy milks 400 to 450 registered Jersey cows, producing about 30,000 pounds of milk daily.

They also raise replacement heifers.

Justin Wagner, Julie’s brother, is running the dairy and working full-time on the farm. He lives nearby with his wife Heidi and their two sons: Andon, 6, and Owen, 3. The boys are little yet to do much on the farm, but they will help push up the feed for the cows. While they enjoy the cattle, Leonard observed that they seem to like the tractors better.

Julie’s sister, Jennifer Wagner-Lahr and husband Larry Lahr have three children and operate a crop and livestock farm near Cold Spring. The heifers go to their farm for roughly six to eight months for holding, feeding and breeding. Then they come back home and wait to calf.

The dry cows can go into pasture, but if it’s too close to delivery they have to stay back because they don’t want calving to take place in the pasture. Then it’s on to milking.

Julie hasn’t milked for a while, but less than five years ago she came morning and night to milk the cows. That was in addition to her nursing job. Julie is a registered nurse who works in the emergency room at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. She earned her degree at Ridgewater College in Willmar.

“I’m very hard-working and dedicated. Farming taught me a lot of ethics,” said Julie.

The same can be said of her siblings. Jennifer is a senior director for Agricultural Utilization Research Institute. Justin has been key in expanding the family operation. He built a large free stall barn and then doubled its size a few years later.

“They aren’t tied up anymore. They can go anywhere they want,” said Julie. “They can get up when they want. They can eat when they want.”

In the summer months, the barn is nice and cool thanks to a constant mist and fans. The cows can walk underneath back scratchers also.

The dairy employs a four-man milking crew. Twice a day, three of the men milk the cows in a double 11 milking parlor. They begin at 3:30 a.m. and finish around 10:30 a.m. and then come back at 3:30 p.m. and do it all over again. The morning shift is a little longer due to cleaning and other work.

In their fields, the Wagners grow alfalfa and corn.

Minnesota Sheep producers are tops in nation

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer SPENCER, Iowa — “Minnesota has been the number one state for lambs marketed per ewe for almost two decades. The state average last year was a 174 percent lamb crop. At that level and with today’s prices, that drives a Mike Caskey profit of about $100 per ewe!”

That statement came from Mike Caskey, who is the lamb and wool management instructor at Minnesota West Community College in Pipestone, Minn. Caskey was judging sheep in the 4-H/FFA youth show at the Clay County Fair in Spencer.

Caskey said sheep numbers in Minnesota and Iowa have stayed relatively stable over the past five years.

“There’s some variation by region,” he said. “Wolf and coyote problems in northwest Minnesota are reducing sheep production up there, but numbers are up in other areas. And the reason is economics.

Compared with the swine and cattle industry, sheep have been profitable. We’ve had good lamb markets the past five years. Wool prices have been fairly strong, plus feed costs are down significantly so sheep have turned some profits.”

Obviously a big impact on sheep profits is lambing percentage. In simple terms, the more lambs per ewe, the better money. And in this category, Minnesota sheep producers shine with the top lambs per ewe number in the nation.

Productive life span for a Minnesota ewe is 5 to 6 years. “Not quite as good as the Western states with

less challenging winter weather,” Caskey noted.

Caskey said cross-bred ewes are the top breeds in the commercial sector since producers are trying to pick up production traits from several different breeds. The Finn-Dorsett-Rambouillet cross commercially is common. The breed which would mimic that combination most closely would be a PolyPay. Other breeds are brought in for specific traits for faster-growing market lambs. Hampshires and Suffolk are the breeds often used as terminal sires.

Soil temp monitoring aids fall fertilizer ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture advises farmers and fertilizer applicators to check soil temperature and delay fall application of ammonium-based nitrogen fertilizers until soil temperature stays below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

To assist tracking soil temperature, the MDA has added 22 new monitoring stations to its on-line soil temperature map.

Soil temperature is measured at a 6-inch depth; the same depth anhydrous ammonia is typically applied.

Station data on the MDA on-line map is updated every 15 minutes with the help of satellite uplink technology from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the National Weather Service.

“In areas where fall nitrogen applications are appropriate, soil temperature, not harvest progress, should be your guide of when to apply,” says Bruce Montgomery, manager of the MDA Fertilizer Management Section. “Waiting until soil temperature stays below 50 F before applying anhydrous ammonia and urea increases the availability of nitrogen to next season’s crop and decreases the amount of nitrate that could potentially leach into groundwater.”

At temperatures below 50 F, microbe activity in the

soil slows down, slowing the conversion to nitrate and the likelihood of nitrate movement with water.

According to Mark Seeley, University of Minnesota Extension climatologist, on average soil temperatures reach 50 F during the first week in October in northern Minnesota and the fourth week of October in southern Minnesota. These dates can vary widely year to year, making information provided by the real-time soil temperature monitoring stations valuable.

In addition to delaying application until soil temperature stays below 50 F, best management practices for nitrogen use developed by the University of Minnesota Extension recommend using a nitrification inhibitor when fall applying anhydrous ammonia in south-central Minnesota. Fall applied urea is not recommended for south-central Minnesota. In southeast Minnesota’s karst region and statewide on coarse-textured soils, fall application of nitrogen fertilizer is not recommended regardless of soil temperature. Specific nitrogen fertilizer use recommendations by region of the state can be found at: www.mda.state.mn.us/nitrogenbmps.

Livestock grants available Qualifying producers are reimbursed 10 percent of the first $500,000 of investment, with a minimum investment of $4,000. Qualifying expenditures include the purchase, construction or improvement of livestock buildings or facilities. Fencing, feeding and waste management equipment are also covered. Producers who suffered a loss due to natural disaster may also apply. The grant will not pay for livestock, land purchases or debt refinancing.

These grants are incentives to start projects, which must begin after Jan. 1, 2017. Applications for operations with farmers transitioning into livestock, beginning farmers, and those with a positive environmental impact receive priority. Guidelines are available at www.mda.state.mn.us and search livestock investment grant. The application deadline is Dec. 16.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson asks livestock producers to apply for a portion of $2 million in grants available for on-farm improvements as part of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Growth, Research and Innovation Program.

With funds awarded during the fiscal year 2015 Livestock Investment Grant, Jared Franke of Hayfield constructed a new beef barn to increase efficiency and allow the next generation to enter into the family farming operation.

In Fairmont, Michael Laue constructed a 2,400 head swine facility to increase profitability and allow a young farmer to start farming full time.

Matthew and David Hanson of Goodridge used grant funding to expand and improve their existing dairy facilities by adding a robotic milking unit and installing equipment to improve profitability.

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. PAUL, Minn. — As most know, years ago 4-H became a youth organization for both farm and nonfarm youngsters. Today, Minnesota 4-H enrollment stands at about 32,000 members in the traditional club program according to Program Director Brad Rugg.

“You can about double that number when you include our after-school audiences. Our numbers are good. Today we focus on two words: First Generation ... to make certain we have a program that is inclusive and relevant to new audiences,” said Rugg.

With farm numbers declining, is there a decline in 4-H in rural areas? Yes, to some extent, said Rugg, but the popular 4-H Lease Program is bringing in even more non-farm kids.

“A kid leases an animal from a local livestock farmer,” Rugg explained. “The animal stays right there at the farm, but the 4-H’er takes full responsibility for the care and handling of that animal. This usually means weekly visits, or even daily visits to the farm for that hands-on experience with his/her animal.”

The leasing program is for breeding projects involving cattle, sheep, pigs, even chickens. The 4H’ers don’t own the individual critters. They sort of adopt the animal and provide the husbandry

“These are incredible learning experiences. Our participating farmers speak highly of the interest and energy, even the love these youngsters share with their livestock friends,” noted Rugg.

Reflecting on the Minnesota dairy industry, dairy farm numbers have declined 40 percent in the last 13 years, according to Rugg. “But during that same time frame, our 4-H numbers in dairy have dropped only 10.5 percent. This livestock leasing program is the reason why.”

Because of avian flu hazards, all poultry shows were abandoned last year. Some 4-H’ers switched to goats or rabbits, so numbers dropped from about 250 exhibitors at the State Fair with poultry and other livestock projects to only 214.

“But we got all of those back this year except about 10,” said Rugg. “Open Class poultry took a big hit last year and hasn’t recovered. Show bird breeders with no ability to sell their stock are still recovering, though poultry exhibits this year again nearly filled the poultry barn.”

However, the big 4-H building at the State Fair once again was filled with a tremendous variety of 4H projects. About 2,300 projects on display provided State Fair visitors with a display of the talents and creativity of Minnesota youth.

Housing for the 4-H kids is often a challenge.

“During livestock weekend, we’re full,” admitted Rugg. “The 4-H dorm now holds about 800 kids. We also fill up the barns and Bailey Hall on the St. Paul campus; plus a few even bunk in at Centennial Hall on the Minneapolis campus. Here in the 4-H dormitory, when we swing out the counties the last eight days of the Fair, we’re back to bunking only here. It works that 25 percent of the counties are here for just one overnight. It’s a 48-hour experience … they come Sunday noon and 48 hours later, they’re out and the next group comes in. Generally more girls than guys are doing these overnights.”

Check these State Fair numbers: 5,630 4-H’ers exhibited 2,689 projects in the 4-H building. Club members showed 2,858 livestock animals; 261 took part in “Arts-In” performances. Food service provided more than 32,593 meals. One in five people who attend the state fair visit the 4-H building. That’s more than 320,000 in 12 days. ❖

Interviewed at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Breneman ventured that there likely are a few more problems in this year’s corn and soybean fields.

“Where it’s good, it will be good,” he said. “Where it’s bad it will be literally nothing. Between hail and excess moisture, some fields have disaster.

Yet some fields in Iowa, and even southern Minnesota where rains have not been the issue, we’re looking at a phenomenal crop. I’m predicting 70 bushel soybeans for many farmers.”

Like many crop consultants, Breneman noted that soybean aphids were “a different issue” this year. Some fields didn’t need to be sprayed. And a growing concern with spraying is the

killing of the aphid predators.

“It’s nice to see Mother Nature do her work out there rather than relying on chemicals,” Breneman said. “Aphid counts weren’t so high this year, but spraying is relatively low cost and good insurance when needed.”

Breneman would not predict whether there will be more corn or soybean acres in 2017. While chatter is growing over a possible set-aside program for 2017, Breneman said he doesn’t know what will happen.

“To me it’s just political talk at this stage,” said Breneman. “The government is always so short-sighted.

The previous set-aside program certainly reduced corn acres but promptly jacked up feed prices. So crop farmers benefitted at the expense of livestock farmers. I’m never in favor of government programs to aid farmers. Seems someone always gets the short ticket.”

Are you ready for the Veterinary Feed Directive?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is taking a new approach on the judicious use of medically important (to treat human illness) antibiotics in food-animal production. It involves voluntary cooperation by all sectors.

In late 2013, FDA initiated a threeyear transition process to complete its food-animal antibiotic strategy. This action requests animal-health companies to outline intentions to voluntarily remove any production/growthpromotion uses from product labels of medically important antibiotics. The guidance also eliminates over-thecounter status of these medications and increases veterinary oversight for on-farm therapeutic use by requiring a veterinary feed directive for feed applications and a prescription for water treatments. Implementation begins Jan. 1.

On June 3, 2015, FDA announced

the final VFD rule. According to the agency, the final rule outlines specific details of the VFD process for medically important feed-grade antibiotics.

Q: Can antibiotic inventory that was purchased prior to Jan. 1 that now require a VFD be administered without a VFD? Bruner: All feed grade antibiotics that were deemed medically important for human medicine will require a VFD, regardless of the date that the antibiotic was purchased. For example, if I purchased Tylan 40 medication in November 2016, any pigs being fed that medication starting Jan. 1, 2017 will require a VFD before it can be fed to pigs.

Q: How will on-farm feed manufacturing be impacted?

Wagstrom: If a producer has an onfarm feed mill and only mixes for themselves they will need to have a VFD to present to the distributor to buy medicated ingredients. They will need to have a current VFD on file to feed medicated feed to pigs. If a producer is making feed that will be given or sold to a neighbor or contract

grower (another person besides themselves; pigs not on their farm), they will need to register with the FDA as a distributor which requires a one-time written letter to the FDA. This letter will need to be kept on file. A VFD will be needed for every batch of medicated feed.

Q: What do you anticipate one of the biggest challenges will be as a result of the revised VFD rules?

Bruner: The logistics of getting medicated feed on short notice to animals that are sick is going to be one of the biggest challenges. For example: A producer orders feed in the morning and during the day chores does not see the symptoms of Ileitis. Night chores reveal clinically ill pigs with Ileitis.

The feed mill will be making the feed early the next morning, so a VFD has to be made in a short amount of time.

The veterinarian, as long as they assume responsibility for veterinary oversight, can write a VFD for that nursery for a period of no longer than 6 months.

Q: How will guidelines impact the injectable use of antibiotics?

Bruner: At this time, nothing will change with injectable antibiotics in January 2017.

Q: What is the typical duration of a VFD? Wagstrom: No longer than six months at your vet’s discretion Q: How will the new guidelines impact antibiotics administered through water?

It is really important to have an established relationship with your veterinarian. You need to sit down with your vet and make sure that you have a valid VCPR (vet-clientpatient relationship).

Q: What can farmers do to prepare for the guideline changes?

Wagstrom: It is really important to have an established relationship with your veterinarian. You need to sit down with your vet and make sure that you have a valid VCPR. You also need to talk to your feed mill to make sure that you understand the way they want to handle the new guidelines so you are all on the same page.

Most vet clinics have an after hour phone number and most swine veterinarians are used to taking calls from clients past 5 p.m. Web based sites that veterinarians can access and issue a VFD from any location are available and a VFD can be emailed to the feed mill and to the producer.

Q: Will vets be able to write a VFD for an entire flow of pigs if there is a known health challenge?

Bruner: One of the main goals of the new regulations in 2017 is that there is more veterinarian oversight in the medication decisions of food animals. A vet-client-patient relationship is the federal and state’s measure of veterinary oversight. Each state has its own version of a VCPR. In general, the VCPR states that the veterinarian must have sufficient knowledge of the pigs that they are medicating. As long as the veterinarian has sufficient knowledge of a flow of pigs, a VFD could be written for a flow of pigs at multiple sites within one VFD. Looking to cheese, Meyer says the August data “paints a slightly better picture when looking at seasonal drawdowns. But overall, the U.S. still has plenty of cheese in storage. Last year, both Natural American and Total cheese categories saw an uncharacteristic increase in inventories from July to August, so a stronger-than-average 3.3 percent drawdown (down 25 million pounds versus 2010-2014 average down 14 million pounds) in Natural American stocks this year could be construed as somewhat bullish versus expectations.

“HighGround’s view is that cheddar production likely remained under pressure in August which helped justify prices peaking in the upper $1.80s during the week ending Aug. 19, also drawing stocks lower than expected. Still, the fact remains that cheese inventories remain robust.”

“True, year-over-year gains have fallen from double digits seen on Natural American just last month,” HighGround says, “but it reminds readers that cheese stocks remained extremely flat from last August through the remainder of 2015 at extraordinary levels. Versus two years ago, total cheese stocks are up 201.7 million pounds, or up 19.4 percent.”

Inventories remain robust and HighGround concludes that “stronger domestic production and weaker demand has the potential to draw prices down further once fourth quarter demand is satisfied.”

Cash dairy markets apparently didn’t like what they saw in the Cold Storage data. Cash 40-pound block cheddar cheese closed Sept. 30 at $1.5325 per pound. This is down 2.75 cents on the week — the lowest level since June 27 and 21.5 cents below that week a year ago when they jumped 15.75 cents. The 500-pound cheddar barrels, after dipping to $1.46 on Sept. 27, rallied to close on Sept. 30 at $1.51. This is unchanged on the week, but 10.75 cents below a year ago, with 24 cars of block trading hands on the week at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and 40 of barrel.

■ Midwest cheese production is steady, according to Dairy Market News. “Milk intakes are relatively balanced and many manufacturers are running near full production schedules. A few processors are looking for additional loads of milk to round out production, but spot loads are a little less available for discounted prices. Milk feed price ratio higher on lower feed costs Western butter makers continue to try to balance production and supplies held in inventory. “Cream is readily available for processing and some butter makers are using the opportunity to churn butter and keep up with current and fourth quarter butter needs. Inventories are still well above previous years and manufacturers expect the seasonal, end of year demand will help draw stocks down,” says Dairy Market News.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk climbed to 95.25 cents per pound on Sept. 27, but then back-tracked and ended the week at 92.75 cents. This is down three-quarter cents from the previous week but 3.25 cents above a year ago, with six cars exchanging hands on the week.

■ Speaking of powder, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange announced a historic change this week in the way physical dairy products will be traded.

Beginning Dec. 5, all spot nonfat dry milk will trade electronically on the CME Direct platform. Butter and cheese will join the powder by the end of first quarter 2017.

■

A higher all-milk price and lower feed costs again pushed the latest milk feed price ratio higher. The August ratio is 2.42, up from 2.14 in July and compares to 2.10 in August 2015, according to the USDA’s latest ag prices report.

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. In other words, one pound of milk today purchases 2.42 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The August U.S. average all-milk price was $17.10 per hundredweight, up $1.00 from July and 40 cents above August 2015. California’s all-milk average of $15.96 was up $1.02 from July and 73 cents above a year ago. Wisconsin’s all-milk price, at $18.00, was up $1.40 from July and 40 cents above a year ago.

Retail and food service demand is firm. Industry contacts still report long inventories, but processors are turning the stocks.”

Cash butter closed on Sept. 30 at $1.8975 per pound. This is down 13 cents on the week and the lowest spot price since July 22, 2014. That is 60.25 cents below a year ago when it plunged 63.5 cents after jumping 41.75 cents the previous week. Eight cars were sold this week at the CME. Central region cream supplies continue to be more available for churning according to Dairy Market News. “Consequently, butter production is ongoing and many processors are running near to full capacity. Bulk inventories are trending lower, but print butter supplies are building. Demands from many retail channels are strong,” says Dairy Market News.

■ The Daily Dairy Report says, “The dairy Margin Protection Program margin for the July-August 2016 period is $8.43. This is up $2.66 per cwt. from the prior two-month period, and exceeds the maximum MPP coverage of $8 per cwt.”

Checking the milk supply: “There was no uniform national trend for milk production the week of Sept. 19,” according to Dairy Market News. “Seasonal and weather factors are in play and production is mostly flat to marginally lower in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

“Southeast, North Central and Pacific Northwest states have steady farm milk output. Arizona has steady to slightly higher milk output. South Central milk production bobbled following rainstorms and is lower in Florida,

New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho. California has experienced higher farm milk intakes as well as increased improvements in milk protein and butterfat components following cooler temperatures,” Dairy Market News reports.

“Midwest spot milk demand is active, with prices ranging from $1.25-$3.00 over class. Transportation and pricing factors are stalling some spot milk sales. Central cream is tighter due to a new churning operation making bulk butter, rather than selling cream.

Cream volumes are more available in the west.”

■ Cooperatives Working Together continues to move product offshore, accepting 13 requests for export assistance this week from Dairy Farmers of America, Northwest Dairy Association/Darigold and Tillamook County Creamery Association. The cooperatives have contracts to sell 2.29 million pounds of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese to customers in Asia, Central America, the Middle East, North Africa and Oceania.

The product has been contracted for delivery through December and puts CWT’s 2016 exports at 38.15 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 7.49 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 21.3 million pounds of whole milk powder to 21 countries on five continents. The sales are the equivalent of 676.17 million pounds of milk on a milkfat basis with totals adjusted for cancellations.

■ The European Commission is attempting to get a handle on milk production. The Sept. 27 Daily Dairy Report says the EC has set aside 150 million euros to dole out to the more than 52,000 dairy producers who enrolled in its milk production reduction scheme.

“Producers from 27 countries pledged to reduce milk output by 1.06 million metric tons, or 2.33 billion pounds, in the next three months compared to the fourth quarter of last year,” the Daily Dairy Report says. “To qualify, producers must reduce output by at least 1,500 kg, and payments are capped at a 50 percent drop in milk production.”

“The average producer has pledged to reduce milk output by 16.9 percent. The Commission believes this will result in a 2.9 percent drop in milk collections in the fourth quarter compared to the same period in 2015,” according to the Daily Dairy Report.

■ The week of Sept. 19 marked the one-year anniversary of the start of the USDA-led federal milk marketing order hearing in California.

Annie AcMoody, director of economic analysis for Western United Dairymen, wrote in her Sept. 23 member newsletter, “It would be nice to celebrate the event with actual results to contemplate, but all we are left with at the moment are the memories we acquired there. Whether those memories will go down as good or bad ones will likely depend on USDA’s proposed order for California.”

AcMoody admits, “The federal agency did warn us that it would take a while, but this long? Maybe not everybody expected that. But the key thing to remember is that USDA is not avoiding us nor did they forget about California.”

The next step, she says, will be for USDA to release a recommended decision, which the public will be invited to comment on. “A period of two-three months is then expected for public comments. The agency will then take time to review those comments and issue a final decision. Then producers in the affected

‘Farmer’s Almanac’ cookbook blends food, history Cookbook Corner

By SARAH JOHNSON The Land Correspondent The makers of the 2016 “Old Farmer’s Almanac Readers’ Best Recipes and the Stories Behind Them” cookbook realized early on that a big part of our enjoyment of food comes from remembering the good times that surrounded it. Whether at the family table, at a community picnic, or at a barbecue with friends, the memories come flooding back with each bite.

That’s why the editors included stories and reminiscences from the recipe contributors: So cooks can put a “face” to the recipe and join the fun. Sometimes funny, other times poignant, the stories add extra flavor and zest to the recipes themselves.

■ The following recipe calls for simmering the green beans for … wait for it … an hour. What?!

Well, it makes the beans verrrry tender. And the bacon imparts a deep smoky flavor that recalls the contributor’s childhood home on a Kentucky farm.

Old-Fashioned Green Beans 4 strips bacon 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed 1-1/2 cups beef broth, heated 1/4 cup chopped onion Freshly ground black pepper In a skillet over medium heat, fry bacon until crisp. Remove and drain on paper towels. Reserve bacon drippings. When cool enough to handle, crumble or break up bacon.

Sauté beans in bacon drippings until bright green.

Blueberry-Kidney Bean Salad with Fresh Vegetables Dressing: 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon curry powder Salad: 1 can (15.5 ounces) red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 onion, cut into bite-size pieces 1 green pepper, cut into bite-size pieces 1 tomato, cut into bit-size pieces 1-1/2 cups fresh blueberries 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese For dressing: In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and curry powder.

For salad: In another bowl, combine beans, onions, tomatoes and peppers, Stir in blueberries and feta.

Pour dressing over bean mixture and mix well.

Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. Makes 4 servings.

In another bowl, mix together tomato soup, 11/2 cups water, and diced and stewed tomatoes. Pour over cabbage and meat. Cover with lid. Bake for 3 to 3-1/2 hours, or until cabbage is tender, stirring cabbage gently halfway through. Serve over mashed potatoes, if desired.

Avocado Bread 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1/2 cup mashed avocado (1 medium avocado) 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup chopped pecans Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease a 9 by 5 inch loaf pan. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk to blend thoroughly.

In another bowl, beat together egg and avocado.

Stir in buttermilk. Add to dry ingredients and blend well. Stir in pecans. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Makes one loaf.

A

lbert Pabst has been husking for a long time.

He was in the corn fields shucking corn before it was competitive, before it was a spectator sport and before there were machines to do it more efficiently. Cornhusking began as a functional practice. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, husking corn by hand was the only way to get it harvested.

It was said a good man could husk a hundred bushels a day. In his prime, Pabst averaged 150 bushels a day.

“I used to do it for wages, by the bushel,” said Pabst, of Sanborn. “Thirteen cents a bushel … that was big wages then. Thirteen cents at 150 bushels — that’s $20 a day. That would be the same as making a $100 today.”

In the early 1920s, cornhusking became a competitive event. Through the ’20s and ’30s, the contests became huge social events, some of them attracting tens of thousands of onlookers. The bombing of Pearl

Harbor, however, brought an end to the contests, and after World War II, technology made manual cornhusking obsolete. It wasn’t until the 1970s that cornhusking contests were revived. Pabst is almost 81 now. He still husks corn in these competitions and remains active in the state’s cornhusking association.

Cornhusking is in his blood.

As the winners’ names were being called over the loud speaker for the girls youth category at the state competition, Pabst listened intently. The first place winner was announced. “That’s my granddaughter,” Pabst said. The second place winner was announced.

“That’s my granddaughter.”

And with that, Pabst was off to watch yet another granddaughter take part in the cornhusking competition.

She too won, taking first place in her division.

Cornhusking — it’s in their blood. ❖
