Moreover, it doesn’t matter whether you or I or the neighbor’s dog believes in climate change because that belief or disbelief will not stop another world-changing 4 degrees celsius increase in global temperatures by 2100. Our actions now might, but even that’s not certain.

What is certain is that we cannot continue on today’s deadly consumptive path. We need to change. And fast.

Maybe a good place to start is looking in our grandchildren’s eyes and tell ‘em the truth: We’re robbing your future to grow $3 corn we don’t need, $9 soybeans we can’t sell, and moneylosing 60-cent cotton we’re dumping on world markets.

Hey, they need to grow up and face the future. What’s left of it anyway.

Wrapping up, I’m wondering how many will not go to the polls this November election. With two of the least-liked presidential candidates in U.S. history, chatter says why even bother? But obviously, most Minnesotans will bother because it’s a privilege. And this year it may be more important than ever to voice that privilege at the voting booth rather than just exchanging cantankerous rhetoric at the coffee shop. We’ve been known as the voting-est state in the nation. But we set a record low with only 7 percent of eligible voters going to the polls in primary elections in early August. You could go Green or Libertarian. Even if you are voting in disgust, make it a point to vote.

This year showcased 454 different foods: 383,000 mini donuts, 25,000 gallons of milk (It’s now $2 at the all you can drink stand. I recall when it was 10 cents); nearly 150,000 corn on the cob purchases (at $3/ear).

Attendance at the State Fair set a record at roughly 1.9 million, beating the 2014 record of 1.8 million. In 2015, attendance came very close to 1.8 million visitors.

That is also the direction Jessica has chosen, though she had other choices. She has a degree in culinary arts and could be a chef in a nice restaurant, but this is where she wants to be.

“I can make a bigger difference here,” Jessica said. “I want to help restore the land and bring health to the market.”

She uses her degree to teach some classes on healthy cooking.

All of their produce — meat and eggs — is direct-marketed. JoAnn heads the sales and marketing; but everyone is learning the marketing end, Lyle said. They have many return customers and are getting new ones — some of whom have been told by their doctor that they need to change their diet.

got away from me. I know I’m going to have to till them again.”

Trying something new and making adjustments is common when you farm as the Kruse family does.

“You’re always changing,” Lyle said.

“There’s no perfect plan. You’re always changing and adapting.”

Something new in their grass-fed herd this year are Galloway cattle, which he purchased from a neighbor.

So far, he thinks they are doing well.

The Kruse family raises much of their own food, with a large garden, a high tunnel and a greenhouse, where they grow mostly heritage seeds. They are very health-conscious and that is the consumer to whom they market.

“That’s why we focus on grass-fed beef and the pasture-raised chicken,”

Lyle said. “No GMOs. No antibiotics.

That’s what our customers want, and that’s our belief also, so that works good.”

The Kruse family farms and ranches as it does because they see it as a way to bring healthy food to the market while also caring for the health of the land and livestock. But it’s apparent there is another emphasis, and that is on family. It’s the opportunity to make a good living and a good life working together, doing what they love to do.

“A bad day on the farm is so much better than a good day in town,” Lyle said. “We all want to be part of this lifestyle. We enjoy the work.”

pesticide applicators the “qualified individual” who can determine if the pesticide application is necessary, explained Kee. That means producers, who are certified, will document and decide.

Ultimately, farmers will look good because many are scouting and meeting conditions before applying insecticide and, due to economics, they are not applying unnecessary chemicals, Regimbal said.

“This will show that Minnesota knows that farmers are doing this,” said Regimbal. “Product isn’t being applied unnecessarily. We are doing our best to protect pollinators.”

As a scientist, Kee has concerns about insect resistance as there are only three classes of insecticides for soybeans: organophosphates, pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. Resistance has been identified.

“We’re having tools being taken away from us. We know from past experience if you do the same thing year in and year out something will evolve around it,” said Kee. “We need to have lots of options for our growers to use to avoid this resistance.”

Neonicotinoids are widely used as a seed treatment. Soybean and corn seed, along with canola seed, are treated with neonicotinoids. Seed treatments are used to protect young plants from earlyseason soil and foliage pests. Legislative action is required to regulate treated seeds.

MDA’s first action step is to create a treated seed program to regulate the sale and use of pesticidetreated seeds. On Aug. 26, Minnesota Public Radio reported that MDA Commissioner Dave Frederickson will ask the Minnesota Legislature for authority to regulate seeds treated with pesticides.

The order also calls for a new task force to study the issues impacting pollinators.

Meanwhile, Kee, Petefish and Regimbal are all looking to science-based research to guide the use of neonicotinoids. ❖

“The label language explains that you need to do that, but it’s not explained how you go about that,” said Regimbal.

Regimbal envisions the MDA will require farmers to document counts and keep the documents with application records. He noted there are many steps to implement the executive order. First, the MDA will bring together producers, stakeholders and University of Minnesota experts to see how to best implement the order.

The MDA will ease into this regulation and do it right so growers have time to understand it, said Regimbal.

“The most effective way to do change is to make sure that people know what it is that you expect them to do. Enforcement authority doesn’t get you very far if you haven’t told people what you want,” said Regimbal. “Enforcement is the last tool.”

Education will be key. One of the best ways to educate producers is to add neonicotinoid compliance to existing applicator training, Regimbal said.

David Kee is director of research for the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council. He explained the executive order on neonicotinoids applies to foliar applied applications only.

MDA’s action steps include developing a formal process in which a qualified individual will verify the need to apply neonicotinoids.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will require proof that spraying is needed to prevent a significant crop loss.

Petefish is the vice president of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association board. He explained the neonicotinoid class is important to producers. If used, the insecticide is applied in late July and early August when aphids or other insects attack a soybean crop.

Dayton’s order announced Aug. 26 is based on an MDA report released the same day and titled, “Review of Neonicotinoid Use, Registration and Insect Pollinator Impacts in Minnesota.” MDA staff worked on the report for two years and wrote eight action steps.

Soybean growers understand the importance of bees, said Petefish who with other producers are working with beekeepers and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to understand the relationship between production agriculture, habitat and bees. Petefish said questions on farmers’ use of neonics and the declining bee population remain unanswered.

“I’m not sure that there is conclusive evidence on neonics and bees. Even if there is a direct impact, what is the actual situation going on in the countryside and ag production areas and the timing of application versus bee activity?” asked Petefish.

Soybeans begin flowering on June 21. Bees are most active in soybean fields during flowering, which lasts six to eight weeks. So flowering usually ends before spraying begins in late July and early August.

Like most producers, Petefish is a certified pesticide applicator licensed to purchase and handle these chemicals. He says neonicotinoid use is not widespread and they are only sprayed as needed and usually not every year.

“It is a crime if you don’t follow the label,” Petefish said.

The label states when the insecticide is used to spray soybeans for aphids, the crops must meet certain conditions if bees are foraging or flowering isn’t complete.

The condition most often cited is significant crop loss, explained Gregg Regimbal, MDA pesticide nonpoint section manager. He added that the labels are very general and MDA will define compliance and show what that means in Minnesota.

Before spraying, Regimbal said most producers are scouting fields, counting and making sure they meet the economic threshold for crop loss. The University of Minnesota Extension’s economic threshold is 250 soybean aphids per plant, with greater than 80 percent plants infested, and aphid populations increasing.

Angie Benson is beginning her third year as a fourth-grade teacher in the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Elementary School. After attending the “Composting with Red Wigglers” session, her class brings back to the classroom a jar containing composting material and a couple worms. They are able to monitor, on a daily basis, the activity in the jar.

Another popular session is on electrical safety. “The electricity demonstration stands out when he (the electric coop representative) cooks a hotdog by holding it on an electric wire, said Benson. “It’s not enough to tell the students to stay away from power lines. You show them, and that sticks with them.”

After the noon lunch break, everyone gathers near a tractor for a power take-off (PTO) demonstration with Mike Wojahn, Cottonwood County Farm Bureau president. Using a paper dummy, Wojahn presents a graphic demonstration of what could happen to someone who gets too close to an unshielded PTO. He also shares the story of a neighborhood farmer friend who lost his life a few years ago when he accidentally tangled with a PTO on his farm.

Each student receives a spiral-bound safety book containing a wide range of safety tips for the farm child or the residential child to share with the entire family.

“The Farm Bureau’s safety program is very important,” Nickel said. “When children in the fourth grade go to grandpa and grandma’s, they need to be aware of the danger. We do a grain bin safety demonstration. It’s surprising how much strength it takes to pull

someone out.”

The farm safety instruction is special to Mountain Lake Public School teacher Stephanie Willaby. Her husband survived an accident while working around an auger over 20 years ago.

Willaby has accompanied her students for at least the past 10 years and speaks highly of the instruction her students receive. “There are a variety of learning experiences. Students journal about their field trip when they return to the classroom and write very nice comments. I hope the field day continues.”

A visit from the Minnesota Science Museum with a demonstration on solids, liquids and gases is also part of the day.

“The Science Museum coming is a big plus,” said Nickel. “School districts have less funding and can’t afford to bring the museum to each school. This gives more children the opportunity to learn.”

Support for the field day comes from a variety of sources: Cottonwood County Extension Service, Cottonwood and Redwood County Farm Bureaus, Minnesota Science Museum, Okabena Ocheda Watershed District, Redwood Electric Cooperative, South Central Electric Association and the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and Extension; and Southwest Research and Outreach Center. Torkelson looks for changes in state legislature

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer MORGAN, Minn. — With all 201 seats in the Minnesota Legislature up for election this fall, will there be lots of new faces? State Representative and Hanska area farmer Paul Torkelson didn’t dodge the issue.

Paul Torkelson “We’ll have quite a few new faces,” he said, “partly because a number of my colleagues are retiring or running for the Senate. It’s over a dozen that we know will be leaving plus there will be some new candidates.”

Torkelson smiled and added, “This ambition to get into the Senate certainly isn’t motivated by money.

We all get the same salary. There’s some notoriety perhaps. And more help. In the Senate, each gets his/her own LA (legislative assistant) whereas in the House, we share LAs. Sometimes two or three House members share the same LA. “The bigger question is, will we Republicans still be the majority? We think we can continue that position. There are just a handful of us actual farmers in the Minnesota legislature — both houses. I can only think of three of us ‘dirt farmers’ in the House. A few others have a farm background, but total identity with agriculture continues to shrink.”

House members total 134; Senate members total 67. Annual salaries fixed by state law are $31,140 per member. There currently are 68 females in the current assembly and 133 males.

Interviewed at Minnesota Farmfest, Torkelson talked of the challenge to educate his colleagues about agriculture. “I do what I can, but it’s imperative that others involved with agriculture keep telling our story to other legislators that may not know much about the complexity of raising crops, growing livestock, and then moving that production into the marketplace.”

Farmfest has an opportunity to attract more nonfarmers who might learn about agriculture just by being at this event.

Said Torkelson, “It would be great if they would come. There are a few out here.” In fact, Torkelson invited the new Minnesota Department of Human Services Commissioner Emily Johnson Piper. She

As a farmer, Torkelson has experienced tough times for agriculture. But he knows farmers recognize pricing cycles as inherent in agriculture and the weather man is the big player each year in determining ag prices.

“It’s very challenging right now,” said Torkelson.

“There’s no doubt this fall and next spring some producers will have a difficult time getting funds they need to operate. That puts pressure on all of us here in rural Minnesota — especially the ag retailers selling seed, or farm equipment, or farm chemicals.

When we farmers get pinched on the prices we get for our produce, we have to cut back.”

Torkelson is a corn-soybean crop man who also has a swine finishing building, which he provides to an integrator. “That building is a valuable asset because it also provides the nutrients I need to grow my crops,” he explained.

Interviewing a state representative leads to thoughts on the 2016 presidential election. Torkelson commented, “I honestly believe there will be more people turning out this fall to vote against a

presidential candidate than to vote for a candidate. These two candidates are very controversial and for completely opposite reasons.”

Sen. David Hann Senate Republican David Hann, who represents District 48 in the Eden Prairie area, stopped to talk.

David Hann “I’m the minority leader right now, but hopefully after the election that will change,” Hann said. “Even though I represent a suburban district, I have an interest in agriculture because I know the economic impact it has for our entire state. I served on the Senate Ag Committee my first eight years and think understanding agriculture is critically important for anyone that serves in the legislature no matter where you are from.

“Ag is the biggest economic engine of the state. Not enough people know this, but we all should be concerned about the agricultural industry of Minnesota.

We all should be trying to make it grow and prosper.

There are so many ancillary industries that provide employment plus additional economic thrust for our entire state.

“We cannot look at this state as being just a metropolitan area.”

Hann said he was disturbed by Gov. Mark Dayton’s veto of the land tax proposal which would have made property tax more even-handed.

“Agriculture land is burdened excessively in my opinion,” he said. “And we’re certainly not going down the path of the Governor and the DFL majority in proposing new taxes on the repair and maintenance of equipment. We’re not interested in finding more taxes.

We’re interested in growing the economy and you do that by making it easier for people to invest and expand their businesses. Farmers are prime examples.”

Hann fielded questions on biodiesel at Farmfest, saying he believes it can continue to grow as a viable renewable energy.

“The question for our state is, will we be a state friendly to economic growth or are higher taxes and top down initiatives going to be driving this state?” he said. “I think we need to be doing things that will create growth from the bottom up.” ❖

“We want to get it to market,” said Krishnan.

China is already a major market for DDGs for livestock feed, but Krishnan said China has lots of potential for food grade DDGs. The Chinese make steamed breads that can utilize up to 20 percent of DDGs mixed with flour.

SDSU students served DDG cookies in the Kernel Nation tent at Farmfest. They tasted like sugar cookies.

Lexi Snyder, of Dell Rapids, S.D., and a junior at SDSU-Brookings, is a food science major and chemistry minor. She sees potential in bringing DDGs into the food market.

“I think it’s an awesome idea especially with cookies. Who doesn’t love cookies?” she asked.

While some farmers made jokes about eating what their cows eat, Snyder explained that DDGs can be more than a byproduct of ethanol. DDGs can be used to feed cattle, people and make cookies healthier.

Tanvee Deshpande, who is earning her Ph.D in food science at SDSU, is working on the project.Deshpande is from Mumbai, India, and has been studying at the university for a year.

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor MORGAN, Minn. — Dried Distillers grains aren’t just for livestock anymore. A scientist at South Dakota State University is developing food-grade DDGs that can be added to flour to make baked goods for people.

DDG cookies debuted at Minnesota Farmfest 2016 to rave reviews from visitors. The cookies contained 2 percent DDGs added to flour.

Padu Krishnan, professor of food science at SDSUBrookings, has been working on recipes using DDGs for 25 years. Krishnan and students made 5,000 cookies in the SDSU food science laboratories to bring to Farmfest. They mixed, baked, froze, packaged individually and packed again for travel.

Krishnan uses a process to clean the grains to make them pristine, extract the odor of yeast and pulverize it to a fine powder. DDGs contain 40 percent fiber and 36 percent protein. Then the powder is mixed with flour.

“It (DDGs) includes the fiber and protein content which is something we need for our health,” said Krishnan.

Krishnan has a patent pending for food grade DDGs and funding from the Minnesota Corn Growers Association. In the third year of an MCGA grant,

Monoslope feeder barn anchors Simmental ranch

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer CANBY, Minn. — A Hendricks police chief for 22 years and now cattle producer, may explain the name of Crazy Fate Ranch — one of five tour stops on the Minnesota Cattlemen’s Tour in western Minnesota. When the farm and cattle business kept expanding, Faith Olsen quit law enforcement in 2011 to become a fulltime farming partner with husband Chad Olsen near Canby.

Chad and Faith farm close to 3,000 acres with neighbors and long-time family friends, Randy and Connie Janiszeski. Chad and Faith bought the Olsen farm in 2005, making it a fourth-generation operation dating back to 1923. In 2003, the Olsen’s purchased 10 registered Simmental cows which progressed to 190 head of seed stock today. In 2013, they built a 500head monoslope feeder barn. This spring the monoslope expanded and they now have a 980-head permitted facility that stretches 390 feet long.

“Chad and I had been studying the monoslope after visiting a few of these barns,” Faith said. “It looked like a logical way to expand our total cattle business. We’re really pleased.

Thanks to deep bedding and bunker feeding, it’s a low labor facility and cattle seem to thrive. Summer temps on our hottest days measure 10 to 15 degrees cooler under the the monoslope roof and 10 to 15 degrees warmer in the winter,” said Faith.

She said one person can do the feeding and one person can clean the pens. She indicated labor efficiency is key.

Under the monoslope, bunkers occupy both sides. When younger calves are brought into the facility, a cable is positioned across the guard rails to ensure none get out. Those cables are removed when cattle get heavier.

Chad Olsen had been in the farming and cattle feeding business with his dad previous to the decision to get into the purebred Simmental business in 2003. Why that decision?

“We enjoyed the showing of cattle,” Faith explained. “Getting into purebred seed stock considerably enlarges that factor. Plus we simply liked the disposition and temperament of Simmentals. Very efficient animals so they greatly expanded our marketing opportunities as well.”

That March sales of breeding stock has traditionally been a live auction at the Glacial Lakes Livestock facility in Watertown, S.D. But change is coming. In March 2017 it will be both a live auction and internet offering conducted at the Hoffman Ranch.

As a purebred seed stock provider, she may be more optimistic than other producers on the future of the cattle business.

“I think prices will straighten out,” Faith said. “We’re used to dealing in cycles. But the problem bothering all of us is how long is this depressed market going to last. Lessening the volatility out there would be a big help for all.”

Before marrying Chad, Faith raised purebred Suffolk sheep so volatile markets have been part of her upbringing since day one.

“I’ve just basically self-taught myself and listened to lots of people,” she said.

“I’ve made lots of observations about farming and the livestock business.

I’m still observing to this day and hosting one of the stops for this year’s cattle tour is great fun. Plus we’re learning from the folks that visit us.”

The Olsens chose Holsteins to be part of their feeding program because they pencil out better than other breeds for them. They used to buy Holstein steers shipped in from Washington state. They also buy larger groups of 40-50 head from area sales barns.

Each pen has a 150-head capacity.

These Holsteins mostly come in at 400 to 450 pounds and finish out at around 1,500 pounds.

The Olsens are very careful to not exceed their permitted level for the monoslope facility. To expand their current permits they would have to put in some type of sewage handling facility.

Chad’s dad is the environmental office administrator for Lincoln County, so Chad and Faith must set the example for everybody. ❖

Migrating butterflies require a source of nectar to sustain them on their long journeys to their winter areas. Fall flowering plants provide nutrients for refueling along the way.

One of our favorite butterfly-attracting plants is the New England aster. This is a tall grower and can reach a height of 5 feet or more. It is not unusual to see 10 to 15 Red Admiral butterflies smothering the blossoms on this striking plant in the fall. It is a great source of late season food for many pollinators.

Monarchs, the stars of the butterfly world, also feed on the nectar as they stock up on energy for their migration to Mexico.

New England aster (Aster novae-angliae) is a native prairie and roadside beauty. This is a kind of rough plant and does best in the back of a garden or border where it has enough room to spread and develop.

To keep it shorter, a good practice is to cut the stems back to about 6 inches in June. The bloom will be later but the plant will be bushier and more erect.

It is available from several online plant suppliers.

The blossoms can be pink, mauve or purple with large showy golden centers. Deer don’t like it and it is not fussy about growing conditions.

With the start of another school season comes a fresh wonder and excitement for learning. Dinner table conversations may include, “What did you learn today?” It’s good and right to applaud new math skills and reading words. But it’s more than that. It’s bigger then textbooks and GPAs. What if we regularly asked our kids what they are learning outside of the books? What are they learning about being a friend, winning and losing, or patience and perseverance?

Then show them what life-long learning looks like.

Encourage them by sharing what you are learning from them! What have they taught you? Who do you see them becoming?

In her book, Experiencing God Around the Kitchen Table, Marilynn Blackaby reminds parents, “We can never go back and correct mistakes or do things we wish we had done with our children. Yet all is not lost! Being an example for our children lasts a lifetime. They will continue to watch how we handle sorrows, joys, crises, and challenges. We have a continuing responsibility to encourage them and walk with them through struggles.”

And as they learn from us, may we continue to learn from them.

Plant fall flowers to feed pollinators GARDEN, from pg. 13 It is easier for butterflies to spot a big bunch of flowers than isolated plants. From a butterfly’s point of view there are never too many flowers. Planting in groups of five or more assures that pollinators will easily be able to see their favorites. One top 10 list of butterfly-attracting plants includes: Black-eyed Susan, Joe Pye Weed, Liatris, Coreopsis, Aster, Butterfly Weed, Lantana, Coneflower, Zinnia and Goldenrod.

The declining number of butterflies and other pollinators has been the subject of much study in recent years. One study suggests a possible reason for the dwindling population might be the lack of late-season nectar plants. It behooves us as gardeners to be proactive in the preservation of pollinators by providing a sustainable habitat for them. One small step can be planting fall flowers that produce food the butterflies need. The plus for the gardener is having these fragile winged beauties regularly visiting the yard and garden.

“If your boy-toy is man enough, don a little French maid’s costume to serve this soup. You’ll be saying ‘Oui, Oui’ all night long.” (Racy little quote from the book.) Vermouth is lovely in this Ooh La La Soup, but any kind of leftover red wine will do in a pinch.

This velvety, oniony broth with ramped-up croutons rated four “yums” up from the Johnsons.

Ooh La La French Onion Soup with Vermouth 8 cups thinly sliced onions (about 2-1/2 pounds) 1 cup water 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 10 cups canned fat-free beef broth, divided 1 cup dry vermouth 1/4 cup brandy 8 cheesy croutons (recipe follows) Combine onions, water and olive oil in a stockpot.

Cover and cook over low heat, stirring often, 10 minutes or until translucent. Add sugar and salt. Cook, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes until onions are lightly browned and caramelized, stirring often. (Add 2 tablespoons water if necessary to prevent sticking.)

Combine flour and 1/4 cup broth, stirring until smooth. Add to onion mixture, stirring until blended.

Add remaining 9-3/4 cups broth, stirring with a wire whisk until blended. Add vermouth and brandy. Simmer, uncovered, 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

To serve, ladle into individual soup bowls and top each serving with a crouton. Yield: 8 (1-cup) servings.

Cheesy Croutons Place eight slices of day-old French bread on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Spray both sides

of the bread with cooking spray. Bake at 350 F for 7-8 minutes or until lightly browned. Top each slice of bread with a slice of nonfat Swiss cheese. Return to the oven, and bake 5 additional minutes or until cheese melts.

Pucker-Him-Up Key Lime Pie 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup lime juice (Key lime if possible) 1 tablespoon grated lime rind 1 (6-ounce) graham cracker crust 1/2 cup frozen reduced-calorie whipped topping, thawed 8 thin lime slices Combined sweetened condensed milk and lime juice in a bowl; stir until blended. Stir in lime rind.

Pour into crust. Cover and chill at least one hour.

Top each slice with whipped topping and lime slices.

Yield: 8 servings.

Whoever shops and cooks in the house is majorly responsible for the level of healthiness in the family diet. Like the old computer acronym GIGO (garbage in, garbage out), the principle is that a computer program is only as good as the data put into it. What we put into our bodies matters.

A funny little retro cookbook, “How to Cook for Your Man & Still Want to Look at Him Naked” (Oxmoor House, 1996), takes a not-so-serious view of this process, outlining ways to keep “your man” (or “your woman,” of course) fit for taking out into the world as well as into the bedroom.

Instead of just “smirking” at our loved ones, as the authors point out, we can actually help them stay trim.

With “He’ll Gobble You Up” Turkey Reuben Bake, reduced-fat ingredients are the secret to getting your cheese fix on without making your unmentionables too tight.

“He’ll Gobble You Up” Turkey Reuben Bake 3 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes 1/2 cup nonfat sour cream 1/3 cup skim milk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Vegetable cooking spray 1/2 medium cabbage, thinly sliced (about 4 cups) 1-1/2 teaspoons caraway seeds 1/3 cup nonfat Thousand Island salad dressing 1 cup chopped cooked turkey 1-1/2 cups shredded reduced-fat Swiss cheese, divided Paprika Cook potatoes in boiling water to cover 15 minutes or until very tender. Drain; place in a large bowl. Add sour cream, milk, salt and pepper. Beat at medium speed of an electric mixer until smooth. Set aside.

Coat a large skillet with cooking spray; place over medium heat until hot. Add cabbage and caraway seeds, and cook, stirring constantly, five minutes or until cabbage is wilted. Stir in salad dressing.

Spread half of potato mixture in an 11 by 7 baking dish coated with cooking spray. Top with cabbage mixture, turkey and 1 cup of cheese. Spread remaining potato mixture over cheese; top with remaining 1/2 cup of cheese. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake, uncovered, at 350 F for 40 minutes. Let stand five minutes before serving. Yield: 6 servings.

September 9 The Lee farm gave it a good try in getting the thirdcrop hay completely harvested and came mighty close to finishing it up but the hay market, time and weather intervened. The Land spoke with Joan Lee on Sept. 9 as she reported that they had “called it quits on the third-crop hay.” Unfortunately there’s “just not a market for hay,” she said.

Fall is definitely in the air on the Lee farm with forecasted lows now in the upper 30s F. With fall arriving, Lee was able to “officially put the balers away for the year.” The wheat harvest is also complete with an “average for us” yield of 40 bushels per acre. This year’s wheat harvest meant “combining through water,” she said. With no combine-stuck-inthe-mud issues, Lee is happy wheat is finished for the year. “We did get the oats and wheat fields worked up,” she said.

Next week Lee will start chopping corn, which means a little earlier than average start date. “One of the brands we planted was specifically a silage corn” which was meant to be harvested earlier. As for the soybeans: “In the last week or so the leaves have really turned,” she said. The plants have “quite a few pods on them and seem filled pretty good.”

In between harvesting the crop, Lee and her husband Mark, were able to spend some time at the Minnesota State Fair and tried all the latest and greatest food. The candied-bacon BLT was just one of the delectable culinary delights that Lee enjoyed. A little State Fair fun in the midst of harvest is the perfect combination for Lee.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa September 1 Kent Moser doesn’t have much to report in terms of rain totals from the past two weeks, though he’s happy to say that temperatures have moderated. The Land spoke with Moser on Sept. 1 as he explained: “It doesn’t seem like it’s gotten better on the rain side.”

The lack of moisture has allowed the start of chopping corn. The “corn is maturing pretty fast.” Moser said he believes that “there’s going to be corn that needs to be combined before beans.” Moser found there’s stalk rot that’s starting to show up in the corn. For corn that has been chopped, he said initial yields are “averaging 190 to 210. I think guys for the most part are pretty happy.”

The soybeans are “starting to turn” in lighter ground. Moser said he is “seeing some sudden death creep in. I never see that.” White mold is also now being spotted on the beans. Moser “had aphids come on strong late.” With the appearance of aphids so late in the season the options to halt any infestations were limited.

Moser’s focus now is turning to harvest as he’s “starting yield estimates.” While corn is still a couple weeks away until full maturity, Moser said he is “expecting pretty average to below average (yields.) I’ll be tickled if the average is over 200.”

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

September 9 Rain has been a thorn in Andy Pulk’s side this growing season and continues to be during harvest time. The Land spoke with Pulk on Sept. 9 as he reported he was “one day away from finishing (wheat).”

He started wheat harvest on Aug. 26 but his farm received four inches of rain in two weeks which put harvest on hold. Getting back in the combine won’t happen until at least Sept. 11 at the earliest. “All the little ditches have standing water,” he said.

The wet conditions mean that “tillage is out of the question.” On the bright side, the rain delay in harvest will allow Pulk to travel with his family down to Hutchinson, Minn., on Sept. 10 as his two daughters will compete in the state Pedal Pull.

Pulk will soon be hauling last year’s sunflowers out of his bins as “marketing-wise I hit that right.” Pulk said he got “20 percent more than I would’ve got selling them last year.”

As for the current crops in the ground, the corn “looks really good.” Though Pulk believes the crop is delayed 10 days due to the rain. It’s currently 10 to 15 days away from black layering. The soybean crop won’t be a bin-buster this year for Pulk; instead he believes that “average would be best case scenario.” He said the beans “are really starting to turn; bean harvest is getting close.”

The wheat yields are down but the “quality is phenomenal.” He’s seen 16.5 percent protein. “It’s the best protein I’ve ever had,” he said. With the wet conditions this year, some good news like this is always welcome on the Pulk farm.

John Nielsen, Albert Lea, Minn.

“There’s plenty of stuff to do.” John Nielsen wasn’t sitting around watching crops mature when The Land spoke with him on Sept. 1. Nielsen was at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, taking in all the sights and sounds. Reflecting on how his crops are progressing, Nielsen believes, “corn is ahead of soybeans.” The corn husks are starting to dry out and “the corn is all dented,” he reported.

The time finally came for Nielsen to harvest the hay. “We cut Monday and Tuesday and hopefully get it baled Saturday.” Getting the hay done has been challenging with the rain this summer. Though Nielsen knows it could be worse. “In general we’re better than most (for moisture).” All the rain which has fallen on the Nielsen farm has provided a beautiful lawn. However, that comes at a price. “I’ve never done so much mowing this time of the year.”

The beans are continuing to show signs of sudden death syndrome. Nielsen has seen this in spots on most fields, though he still is “optimistic on the bean crop.” Nielsen is feeling the same for corn. “I think the corn crop is going to be good.” While this year’s corn crop may be good, Nielsen knows that it may not be as great as last year. Only time will tell how this year’s crops will yield. With summer ending and fall around the corner, harvest is approaching quickly on the Nielsen farm.

Whether you’re facing a bushel loss or a revenue loss, it’s in your best financial interest to have your records prepared. Make sure you understand the type of policy and level of coverage you have related to enterprise units or optional units.

It’s important to comprehend the difference between soft records and hard records. Soft records are primarily used for breaking out production by a unit, such as load records or yield monitor records. When harvesting your 2016 grain, know that if you are co-mingling grain with 2015 crop, the old production must be measured by an adjuster before you add new production. We encourage you to call your crop insurance agent right away to get a bin measurement lined up. Co-mingling old with new grain may reduce the size of your claim.

If you think you have a loss, contact your crop insurance agent within 72 hours of the discovery, but no later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period, whichever comes first. The end of the insurance period for corn and soybeans is normally Dec. 10, or when harvest is complete for that crop.

The beginning of the month of September has been less than pleasant for livestock producers. Prices for both cattle and hogs continue to deteriorate despite the fact that markets are oversold. Obviously, the bear markets are still dominating the livestock markets.

The cattle market has plummeted to lows not seen in years during the past few weeks. A combination of factors appear to be responsible for the weakness that have encompassed the cattle market for months. First, the expansion of the cattle herd is increasing the supply of live inventory — albeit ever so slow.

Second, the demand for beef is JOE TEALE nowhere near where it was three Broker years ago.

These two factors, the supply and demand, are the reason for the decline in cattle prices over the past year or more. When you increase supply and reduce demand, the result has always brought lower prices. Such is the case in the cattle market today. Another factor has been the increase in the U.S. dollar which has reduced the export of beef to other countries. Because (from a technical perspective) the market is oversold, one could anticipate some corrective rallies in the market from time to time.

However, if the current fundamentals do not change, the likelihood is the bear market will continue until there is a parity between the supply and the demand. Producers should use rallies to protect inventories as warranted.

CORN — A short trading week after enjoying the Labor Day weekend brought a rally to the corn market for the second week in a row. The December corn contract was up 12.5 cents for the week at $3.41 per bushel. It closed unchanged or higher for six sessions in a row. The March contract jumped 13 cents higher to $3.51.50 per bushel. Funds liquidated a portion of their net short position ahead of the Sept.

Corn ratings fell a miniscule 1 percent to 74 percent good/excellent in the week ended Sept. 4. This is still the sixth highest rating in the last 30 years. Of the crop, 76 percent was dented compared to 69 percent on average and 18 percent was mature compared to 20 percent on average.

Weekly corn export sales were very good at 43 million bushels for the 2016-17 crop year that began Sept. 1. A higher than normal carryout of sales from old crop to new crop of 134 million bushels brought total sales commitments to start the new marketing year to 643 million bushels. September WASDE report will dictate market direction NYSTROM, from pg. 17 marketing year with just 347 million bushels on the books, meaning we have 86 percent more bushels committed to the export pipeline to begin the new crop year than last year. We need to average nearly 31 million bushels of weekly sales to achieve the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s August export forecast of 2.175 billion bushels for 2016-17. There were also 1.2 million bushels sold for the 201718 crop year.

Weekly ethanol production fell by 25,000 barrels per day to 998,000 bpd, the third straight weekly decline.

Ethanol stocks were down fractionally at 20.7 million barrels. Conab cut their Brazilian corn crop estimate by 1.5 mmt to 67 million metric tons due to drought conditions. This should be a positive factor for U.S. corn exports in the coming year. China is anticipating a 2.3 percent decline in this year’s corn harvest at 201.5 mmt as

its government policies have discouraged any corn expansion. The updated production number is a small increase of 500,000 metric tons from their earlier forecast. China’s corn production is still projected to be higher than forecasted demand. The USDA is carrying China’s corn production at 218 mmt.

OUTLOOK: By the time many of you read this, the September WASDE report will have hit the markets. A corn yield under 170 bushels per acre will likely result in the continued uptrend in corn, at least until we see more yield results. Anything else should limit the short-term upside potential. The average trade yield estimate for 2016-17 was 173.4 bu./acre (175.1 bu./acre in August) and the average production forecast was 15.027 billion bushels (15.153 billion bushels in August). Loads: Keep a ledger by crop, recording loads of production for the crop identified by unit, field number, date of harvest, how the grain was transported, and estimated bushels per load. Remember, if you have any first crop/second crop or uninsurable planted acres, you need to track production separately.

Storage structure: If your grain is farm-stored, mark the bin by writing the unit number, date and initial it.

All production in the storage structure must be accounted for. If harvest is complete, an adjuster will come and measure the bin. If you have flat storage, you must keep load records for each field.

Assembly sheets: When hauling directly to the elevator, write the section number that the production came from on the assembly sheet. Do not split truckload tickets and bins between units unless you have soft records for production that is co-mingled. If the adjuster has to combine the units together, it may take you out of a loss situation.

Combine monitors: Print combine monitor records and keep them with your settlement sheets. These records must show location of the field, name

Early harvest reports and weather will dictate direction once the crop report is out of the way.

SOYBEANS — Concern over late season rains’ effect on harvest and crop quality, plus good export demand helped propel soybeans to six consecutive higher closes. Funds also added to their net long position ahead of the monthly USDA crop report. For the week, November soybeans soared 27.75 cents higher to close at $9.80.25 per bushel. The January contract rallied 28.50 cents to settle at $9.84.25 per bushel. Soybean ratings for the week ending Sept. 4 were steady at 73 percent good/excellent. The crop was setting pods at 97 percent and 12 percent was dropping leaves, both right on the averages.

The USDA has lowered the soybean yield estimate from the August report to the September report only 11 times since 1991. Since 1991 when the crop rating for the 35th week has been 65 percent or higher (73 percent this year), it has never lowered the yield forecast from the August to September report. What changes the government will make to the 2015-16 carryout will be closely watched. Any decline here means a smaller carry-in to the 2016-17 crop year. A smaller carry-in could negate at least a portion of any yield increase in the 2016-17 crop balance sheet.

Crop shares: Even if you have only a share in a crop, make sure that you are able to provide records for the entire crop if necessary.

Feed production records: Feed records should be kept at the time the grain is being fed, preferably as a record ledger with dates and amounts fed.

If you think you have a loss or may be unsure about having one, call your crop insurance agent within 72 hours from the time you notice a loss possibility. Do not destroy any crop prior to speaking to an adjuster. Farmers who anticipate a claim of over $200,000 or more for at least one crop should begin working with their crop insurance agent as soon as possible.

Combined with the 73 million bushels carried over from the 2015-16 crop year to the 2016-17 crop year, we have 828 million bushels already committed for export. This is 40 percent higher than where we began last year. We will need to average 22.6 million bushels of export sales to hit the USDA’s current 1.95 billion bushel export forecast. China’s thinktank CNGOIC is projecting their soybean production to be up almost 13 percent year on year to 13.1 mmt and soybean imports to hit 85 mmt.

OUTLOOK: The September WASDE report will be behind us by the time you see this. This report will heavily influence where we go from here. Bigger yield and production numbers have been anticipated and traded prior to the report, assuming the average pre-report estimates were close to the actual government figures. The average yield guess for Sept. 12 was 49.2 bu./acre (48.9 bu./acre in August) and the average production estimate was 4.089 billion bushels (4.06 billion bushels in August). The average ending stocks estimate for 2015-16 was 232 million bushels and for 2016-17 it was 330 million bushels (330 million bushels in August). First resistance in the November contract is $9.83, the 20-day moving average; next resistance is at $10.06 per bushel. Support comes in at the 10-day moving average of $9.61.50 per bushel, then the recent low of $9.37 per bushel.

Nystrom’s Notes: Contract changes for the week ending Sept. 9: December Chicago wheat was 4.25 cents higher, Minneapolis was up 2.50 cents and Kansas City ended the week 5.25 cents higher. The U.S. dollar index fell .496 to settle at 95.348 ❖

Pork production increasing TEALE, from pg. 17 stances as the cattle market. The fact that hog numbers have increased and pork demand has remained relatively steady has produced the weakness over the past few months. The cash market has been on a constant slide following the futures market lower.

The futures prices have anticipated the fall in prices for several months and continue to anticipate further weakness as witnessed by the deep discounts in deferred months.

Product movement has begun to decline ever so slightly as the pork

cutout has rallied. This is of concern for further price declines. The recent cold storage figures confirm the fact that pork production has increased in recent months and that the movement of pork into the consumer venue has not appreciably increased. It would appear the competition in the meat sector is extremely fierce and the price is the ultimate factor by the consumer.

Until these factors which are currently affecting the market are resolved, look for a continued defensive price action in the hog market. Producers are urged to stay current and use rallies to protect inventories as needed. ❖

“Through July 2016, U.S. cheese imports totaled 253 million pounds, up nearly 11 percent, or 24.7 million pounds, compared to last year. The Daily Dairy Report adds that imports stabilized as U.S. cheese prices retreated.

HighGround Dairy says, “For this market to remain strong through September, one primary requirement was for bidding participation to lift, particularly out of the Middle Eastern markets which up until this auction had been somewhat absent. While most analysis tends to point toward China demand being the key catalyst for the 35 percent increase in WMP pricing from the start of August, the support that this market required (and will require moving forward) is further interest from other regions.”

“On that note, it will be pleasing for Fonterra to see a further 12 winning bidders, and 22 participating bidders at this week’s event.”

“This signals a broader base demand across multiple regions and while the WMP contract did not perform to market expectations, perhaps a more stable demand profile is welcomed instead of a 10-20 percent lift.”

■ U.S. dairy prices were mixed in the shortened Labor Day week. The cheddar blocks reversed two weeks of decline, climbing to $1.72 on Sept. 7, then inched back 2 cents, but closed Sept. 9 at $1.71 per pound. This is up 3 cents on the week and 1.5 cents above a year ago. The cheddar barrels, after plunging 24 cents in the previous four weeks, climbed to $1.66 on Sept. 7, but closed Sept. 9 at $1.6050. This is down 3.5 cents on the week and 1.5 cents above a year ago. Nine cars of block exchanged hands on the week at the CME and 24 of barrel.

Midwest cheese production has slowed somewhat, according to Dairy Market News. “With the seasonal downturn in milk intakes, manufacturers report discounted spot loads are not as readily available. Processors are hesitant to buy additional milk unless they can get a good deal or need it to meet commitments.

“Cheese orders are steady. A few cheese makers note an increase in orders from food service over the last week. Retail orders for specialty cheese varieties are also strong. Contacts suggest inventories are still a little long, but not to the point of being a concern.”

Western cheese output is “relatively

steady and consistent with available milk supply,” says Dairy Market News.

“Although milk production is waning a little in the northern states of the region, processors report there are not any major problems getting enough milk for the cheese vats. Domestic retail and food service demand has been good. Customers are taking regular shipments and helping keep cheese stocks under control. Industry contacts say commodity cheese inventories are long, but sellers are not in a rush to clear stocks. A few cheese makers indicate their inventories of 40-pound block cheese has been drawn down to more comfortable levels leading into the fall holidays.”

■ The melting butter price shed another 1.75 cents, ending the week at $2.0325 per pound. This is 53.25 cents below a year ago, and the lowest spot price since May 4. Five cars traded hands on the week. It has lost 23.75 cents in five weeks.

Butter production is mixed in the central region, according to Dairy Market News. Some manufacturers have enough cream for churning and are running at full capacity but cream is very tight in a few plants as it clears to Class II and Class III use. As a result, butter churning is sporadic in those facilities, says Dairy Market News.

Western butter production is steady.

Domestic retail demand is firm and butter is moving well through contracts.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Sept. 9 at 90.5 cents per pound, up 3.5 cents on the week and 3 cents above a year ago, with 12 cars sold on the week.

■ Meanwhile, U.S. dairy margins held “relatively steady over the last half of August, as lower milk prices largely offset cheaper feed costs,” according to the latest Margin Watch from Chicagobased Commodity and Ingredient Hedging.

The Margin Watch states that “Projected margins remain above the 80th percentile of the past ten years, and have reached the 90th percentile in deferred second quarter 2017. Milk prices have been pressured by increased production and heavy dairy stocks in cold storage.”

Citing the data, the Margin Watch reports “July milk production totaled 16.8 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from See MIELKE, pg. 22

The final strategy is to maximize predicted net return. Producers can use the MPP Decision Tool to try to predict what markets will do, and utilize those results to select your coverage level. This strategy could result in the highest returns, but it requires more analysis with the decision tool.

Feed prices moderate as corn prices drop to new lows MIELKE, from pg. 20 2015, and June production was revised to 16.7 billion pounds, an increase of 1.6 percent from the previous year and an increase of 9 million pounds or 0.1 percent from the preliminary estimate last month.

“Meanwhile, natural cheese in cold storage on July 31 totaled 1.276 billion pounds, an increase of 26 million pounds or 2 percent from June, and greater than the average June-July increase of about 1 percent over the past 10 years. The July figure also repre-

sented an increase of 9.86 percent or 114.555 million pounds from 2015 and a record for the month of July.

“Butter stocks of 333.123 million pounds reflected a counter-seasonal increase over June of 4.974 million pounds or 1.52 percent; although stocks typically decline just over 3 percent between June and July.

The butter stocks figure also represented an increase of 78.776 million pounds or 31 percent over 2015.”

■ “On a positive note,” the Margin Watch says “Feed costs continued to moderate with corn prices dropping to fresh contract lows as the market reacts to the latest estimates for record yield and production this season. Soybean meal prices likewise dropped to their lowest levels since April.”

The USDA’s latest National Milk Cost of Production report shows July total milk production costs were up from the previous month but still below those of a year ago.

Total feed costs averaged $10.96 per cwt. This is up 38 cents from May, up 17 cents from June, but $1.50 below July 2015. Purchased feed costs, at $6.38/cwt., were up 48 cents from May, up 15 cents from June, but 60 cents below 2015.

Total costs, including feed, bedding, marketing, fuel, repairs, hired labor, taxes, at $22.51/cwt., were up 80 cents from May, up 42 cents from June, but $1.52 below a year ago. Feed costs made up 48.7 percent of total costs in July, which is down from 48.9 percent the month before and down from 51.9 percent a year ago.

■ In politics, the National Milk Producers Federation reports that “Congress has returned to Washington from its summer recess for a brief period to work on the federal budget, before leaving Capitol Hill by the end of the month to campaign. Also left behind will be a number of important policy items that remain the focus of NMPF, and which we’ll continue to push hard for action on.

“Congress is also likely to assemble in a lame-duck session after the November elections, but apart from a focus on annual spending matters, it doesn’t currently appear there is much momentum behind addressing many of the other major challenges facing the country.”

The NMPF listed immigration reform, the TransPacific Partnership, child nutrition, the school lunch program, biogas recovery tax credits, the farm bill, and dairy’s safety net as its priority issues.

■ Cooperatives Working Together accepted nine requests for export assistance the week of Sept. 5 from Northwest Dairy Association (Darigold) and Tillamook County Creamery Association, who have contracts to sell 1.296 million pounds of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese and 330,693 pounds of butter to customers in Asia, the Middle East and Oceania.

n 1899, Pehr Christianson completed the design and construction of a wooden church pulpit. The pulpit was made of five large panels. Each panel was an intricately portrayed biblical scene carved in relief. Above and below each of the biblical scenes were a total of 15 smaller panels of text in a Swedish dialect.

Christianson, who once carved a ship in a bottle, used only his jack knife to meticulously carve each perfect letter of the text. He also used his jack knife to carve the images and the background of the scenes.

After he completed his carving work, Christianson, a Swedish immigrant and former merchant marine sailor, painted the pulpit’s panels in black and shades of gold. The indented text is in gold with a black background. For painting the finest details of the biblical scenes and lettering, Christianson created very delicate paint brushes made from his wife’s hair.

Upon completion, Christianson presented the pulpit to his church, the Swedish Lutheran Church of Spruce Hill, in Douglas County, Minnesota. For his efforts, Christianson, who also served as the church’s secretary, asked for $25. He received $18.

“Pehr was offered $1,500 from the Catholic Church, but felt it belonged in his church,” Annie Skoglund of the Douglas County Historical Society said.

The pulpit was at first installed in the log church built by the Swedes at Spruce Hill in the 1880s. Spruce Hill lay next to the aptly named Spruce Creek, a Long Prairie River tributary. The church was also adjacent to the Ottertail Trail — one of Central Minnesota’s most important roads at the time.

As a result, by 1899, Spruce Hill was a busy commercial center with two sawmills on the creek and the log church was too small for the growing population. In 1902, the white frame building which today stands along the old Ottertail Trail was built. The pulpit was moved into the new church.

Spruce Hill eventually came upon hard times.

All that remains today, thanks to dedicated area residents and ancestors of the Swedish pioneers, the Douglas County Historical Society, and the County Parks Department, are the pulpit, the pretty church and a quiet county park.

Three times each year, residents and the historical society organize nondenominational services and celebrations at the church. The public is welcome to attend. Pehr Christianson’s pulpit can be viewed on these occasions. The next service will be during the Christmas holidays.
