We can do more than we think we can.

Some see a need and cluck their tongues in sympathy or turn their heads in apathy. Melanie gets to work. When she learned about The Esther School, a school being built for under-resourced children in Zambia, she put her hands to the task. In grade school, with the help of two of her friends and their moms, she organized a “Cookie Mix in a Jar” sale to raise funds. In middle school, she organized a backpack/shoe project. And in high school, she ran a non-profit of sorts called “Beading for Africa.” She crafted necklaces and gave all the profits to this growing school. She didn’t think she was too young, too busy, or her goals too lofty.

She simply saw the need and stepped in.

There’s more. But unless you’re her grandparents, you’re not here for more Melanie stories. So why not share this?

With the start of another school season comes a fresh wonder and excitement for learning. Dinner table conversations may include, “What did you learn today?” It’s good and right to applaud new math skills and reading words. But it’s more than that. It’s bigger then textbooks and GPAs.

What if we regularly asked our kids what they are learning outside of the books? What are they learning about being a friend, winning and losing, or patience and perseverance?

Then show them what life-long learning looks like. Encourage them by sharing what you are learning from them!

What have they taught you? Who do you see them becoming?

In her book, Experiencing God Around the Kitchen Table, Marilynn Blackaby reminds parents, “We can never go back and correct mistakes or do things we wish we had done with our children. Yet all is not lost! Being an example for our children lasts a lifetime. They will continue to watch how we handle sorrows, joys, crises, and challenges. We have a continuing responsibility to encourage them and walk with them through struggles.”

And as they learn from us, may we continue to learn from them.

August 26 Andy Pulk can cross one crop off his harvest to-do list. The Land spoke with Pulk on Aug. 26 as he reported that the “rye grass is done and is all in the bin and safe.” Pulk completed rye grass harvest on Aug. 19. Due to the wet summer the “crop is poorer than I would have like to have seen it.” The heavy rains have seemed to have stayed away lately for the Pulk farm. “We’ve gotten scattered showers, no big Joan Lee, McIntosh, Minn.

August 26 Breaking equipment has been a constant theme for Joan Lee this summer and oat harvest was no exception. The Land spoke with Lee on Aug. 26 as she reported: “We got half the oats combined, then our combine broke down.” Lee and her husband, Mark, were able to borrow a friend’s combine to do the oats.

After oats “then it came to the straw. I had problems with the baler again.” Lee said she has “learned a lot with the baler this year.”

A third crop hay chopping has begun, Mark started baling on Aug. 24 and will be baling more today.

Wheat harvest was complete on Aug. 25. An unfortunate causality of the harvest was Mark’s phone. It seemed to have gone through the combine and is now missing.

With machinery breakdowns, a lost phone and some wet weather, “the frustration had set in.” Lee and Mark decided to take a day away from the farm and on Aug. 20 headed to the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers Show where they “had a fun relaxing time.”

The soybean fields are wet, the corn “cobs look good size” and are “filling out.” Overall, harvest so far, Lee said, “The oats ran really well, wheat no so much.”

Lee is keeping her fingers crossed that early frost and rain stays away and that the machinery doesn’t cause her any more trouble.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa September 1 Kent Moser doesn’t have much to report in terms of rain totals from the past two weeks, though he’s happy to say that temperatures have moderated. The Land spoke with Moser on Sept. 1 as he explained: “It doesn’t seem like it’s gotten better on the rain side.”

The lack of moisture has allowed the start of chopping corn. The “corn is maturing pretty fast.” Moser said he believes that “there’s going to be corn that needs to be combined before beans.” Moser found there’s stalk rot that’s starting to show up in the corn. For corn that has been chopped, he said initial yields are “averaging 190 to 210. I think guys for the most part are pretty happy.”

The soybeans are “starting to turn” in lighter ground. Moser said he is “seeing some sudden death creep in. I never see that.” White mold is also now being spotted on the beans. Moser “had aphids come on strong late.” With the appearance of aphids so late in the season the options to halt any infestations were limited.

Moser’s focus now is turning to harvest as he’s “starting yield estimates.” While corn is still a couple weeks away until full maturity, Moser said he is “expecting pretty average to below average (yields.) I’ll be tickled if the average is over 200.”

Those scattered showers have put a damper on wheat harvest so far for Pulk. “Last weekend we took a couple samples that were really wet, much wetter than I anticipated.”

That coupled with the “running into green wheat” isn’t the great start to the harvest that Pulk was hoping for. With lower wheat prices, Pulk plans to take a discount at the elevator rather than dry the wheat himself. Once wheat harvest gets into full swing, Pulk estimates that it will take “a week and we’ll be wrapped up.”

The wet fields allowed Pulk to spend some time doing something else besides sitting in a combine. He and his daughter and some friends hit Lake of the Woods on Aug. 22 where they caught between 60 and 65 fish.

Wet conditions have delayed the start of wheat harvest but being on the lake, catching a boat-load of fish is certainly a nice way to pass the time.

John Nielsen, Albert Lea, Minn.

“There’s plenty of stuff to do.” John Nielsen wasn’t sitting around watching crops mature when The Land spoke with him on Sept. 1. Nielsen was at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, taking in all the sights and sounds. Reflecting on how his crops are progressing, Nielsen believes, “corn is ahead of soybeans.” The corn husks are starting to dry out and “the corn is all dented,” he reported.

The time finally came for Nielsen to harvest the hay. “We cut Monday and Tuesday and hopefully get it baled Saturday.” Getting the hay done has been challenging with the rain this summer. Though Nielsen knows it could be worse. “In general we’re better than most (for moisture).” All the rain which has fallen on the Nielsen farm has provided a beautiful lawn. However, that comes at a price. “I’ve never done so much mowing this time of the year.”

The beans are continuing to show signs of sudden death syndrome. Nielsen has seen this in spots on most fields, though he still is “optimistic on the bean crop.” Nielsen is feeling the same for corn. “I think the corn crop is going to be good.” While this year’s corn crop may be good, Nielsen knows that it may not be as great as last year. Only time will tell how this year’s crops will yield. With summer ending and fall around the corner, harvest is approaching quickly on the Nielsen farm.

The condition most often cited is significant crop loss, explained Gregg Regimbal, MDA pesticide non-point section manager. He added that the labels are very general and MDA will define compliance and show what that means in Minnesota.

Before spraying, Regimbal said most producers are scouting fields, counting and making sure they meet the economic threshold for crop loss. The University of Minnesota Extension’s economic threshold is 250 soybean aphids per plant, with greater than 80 percent plants infested, and aphid populations increasing.

“The label language explains that you need to do that, but it’s not explained how you go about that,” said Regimbal.

Regimbal envisions the MDA will require farmers to document counts and keep the documents with application records. He noted there are many steps to implement the executive order. First, the MDA will bring together producers, stakeholders and University of Minnesota experts to see how to best implement the order.

The MDA will ease into this regulation and do it right so growers have time to understand it, said Regimbal.

“The most effective way to do change is to make sure that people know what it is that you expect them to do.

Enforcement authority doesn’t get you very far if you haven’t told people what you want,” said Regimbal. “Enforcement is the last tool.”

Education will be key. One of the best ways to educate producers is to add neonicotinoid compliance to existing applicator training, Regimbal said.

David Kee is director of research for the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council. He explained the executive order on neonicotinoids applies to foliar applied applications only.

MDA’s action steps include developing a formal process in which a qualified individual will verify the need to apply neonicotinoids.

Mark Dayton’s executive order which restricts the use of neonicotinoid insecticides to protect bees and other pollinators. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture will require proof that spraying is needed to prevent a significant crop loss.

“Just like the buffer bill, we feel like Gov. Dayton has rushed in and making demands on things he’s not fully educated on,” said Petefish.

Petefish is the vice president of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association board. He explained the neonicotinoid class is important to producers. If used, the insecticide is applied in late July and early August when aphids or other insects attack a soybean crop.

Dayton’s order announced Aug. 26 is based on an MDA report released the same day and titled, “Review of Neonicotinoid Use, Registration and Insect Pollinator Impacts in Minnesota.”

MDA staff worked on the report for two years and wrote eight action steps.

Soybean growers understand the importance of bees, said Petefish who with other producers are working with beekeepers and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to understand the relationship between production agriculture, habitat and bees.

Petefish said questions on farmers’ use of neonics and the declining bee population remain unanswered.

“I’m not sure that there is conclusive evidence on neonics and bees. Even if there is a direct impact, what is the actual situation going on in the countryside and ag production areas and the timing of application versus bee activity?” asked Petefish.

Soybeans begin flowering on June 21. Bees are most active in soybean fields during flowering, which lasts six to eight weeks. So flowering usually ends before spraying begins.

Like most producers, Petefish is a certified pesticide applicator licensed to purchase and handle these chemicals. He says neonicotinoids use is not widespread and only sprayed as needed and usually not every year.

“It is a crime if you don’t follow the label,” Petefish said.

The label states when the insecticide is used to spray soybeans for aphids, the crops must meet certain conditions if bees are foraging or flowering isn’t complete.

“This will show that Minnesota knows that farmers are doing this,” said Regimbal. “Product isn’t being applied unnecessarily. We are doing our best to protect pollinators.”

As a scientist, Kee has concerns about insect resistance as there are only three classes of insecticides for soybeans: organophosphates, pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. Resistance has been identified.

“We’re having tools being taken away from us. We know from past experience if you do the same thing year in and year out something will evolve around it,” said Kee. “We need to have lots of options for our

Neonicotinoids are widely used as a seed treatment. Soybean and corn seed, along with canola seed, are treated with neonicotinoids. Seed treatments are used to protect young plants from earlyseason soil and foliage pests. Legislative action is required to regulate treated seeds.

MDA’s first action step is to create a treated seed program to regulate the sale and use of pesticidetreated seeds. On Aug. 26, Minnesota Public Radio reported that MDA Commissioner Dave Frederickson will ask the Minnesota Legislature for authority to regulate seeds treated with pesticides.

The order also calls for a new task force to study the issues impacting pollinators.

Meanwhile, Kee, Petefish and Regimbal are all looking to science-based practices to guide the use of neonicotinoids. ❖

Majority of Minn. corn in dent stage Mostly drier weather allowed Minnesota farmers 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Sept. 4, the most days suitable since the beginning of August, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Wet conditions continued to be a challenge in some areas, with a few locations reporting several inches of rain received during the week. Many producers are still looking for some drier days to let fields firm up for harvest. Field activities for the week included finishing up small grain harvest, lifting sugarbeets, harvesting wild rice, chopping corn for silage, and tilling harvested small grain fields.

Regarding corn acreage, 77 percent in or beyond the dent stage, five days ahead of the five-year average. With corn beginning to mature, corn condition rated 84 percent good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from the previous week. Corn harvested for silage was 12 percent complete, about a week behind the average, but consistent with last year’s progress.

As for the soybean crop, 40 percent was turning color, two days ahead average, but three days behind last year. With 6 percent of the soybean crop dropping leaves, soybean condition rated 79 percent good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week.

Small grain harvest was wrapping up across the state, with 98 percent of spring wheat harvested.

With 44 percent of the dry edible bean crop dropping leaves or beyond, 11 percent of the dry edible bean crop had been harvested, two days ahead of average, but 2 days behind last year. Dry edible bean condition rated 67 percent good to excellent. Eight percent of the sugarbeet crop had been harvested.

The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 81 percent complete. Pasture condition rated 76 percent good to excellent.

So far, he thinks they are doing well.

The Kruse family raises much of their own food, with a large garden, a high tunnel and a greenhouse, where they grow mostly heritage seeds. They are very health-conscious and that is the consumer to whom they market.

“That’s why we focus on grass-fed beef and the pasture-raised chicken,” Lyle said. “No GMOs. No antibiotics.

That’s what our customers want, and that’s our belief also, so that works good.”

The Kruse family farms and ranches as it does because they see it as a way to bring healthy food to the market while also caring for the health of the land and livestock. But it’s apparent there is another emphasis, and that is on family. It’s the opportunity to make a good living and a good life working together, doing what they love to do.

“A bad day on the farm is so much better than a good day in town,” Lyle said. “We all want to be part of this lifestyle. We enjoy the work.”

Lyle added that he doesn’t think the organic, grass-fed, non-gentically modified organism market is a niche market any longer.

Trying something new and making adjustments is common when you farm as the Kruse family does.

“You’re always changing,” Lyle said.

“There’s no perfect plan. You’re always changing and adapting.”

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Haley Hinrichs, a 19-year-old college student from Goodhue, Minn., representing Goodhue County, was crowned the 63rd Princess Kay of the Milky Way in an evening ceremony at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on Aug. 24.

Hinrichs is the daughter of Tim Hinrichs and attends Iowa State University, where she is pursuing a degree in agriculture education with an emphasis in communications.

Twelve county dairy princesses from throughout Minnesota competed for the title. Meghan Skiba of Cambridge, representing Isanti County, and Morgan Krause of Buffalo, representing Wright County, were selected as runners-up.

Skiba was also named Miss Congeniality. Skiba and Krause were awarded scholarships, along with Sabrina Portner of Sleepy Eye, representing Brown County.

Throughout her yearlong reign as Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Hinrichs will make public appearances to help connect consumers to Minnesota’s dairy farm families. She will also promote the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, through which she encourages students to get 60 minutes of physical activity each day and eat a healthy diet that includes three servings of dairy.

Princess Kay candidates were judged on their general knowledge of the dairy industry, communication skills and enthusiasm for dairy.

Grain Angles Get ready to file claim Due to the decline in grain market prices, the possibility of having an insurance claim may increase this fall, depending on your yields. Whether you’re facing a bushel loss or a revenue loss, it’s in your best financial interest to have your records prepared. Make sure you understand the type of policy and level of coverage you have related to enterprise units or optional units.

It’s important to comprehend the difference between soft records and hard records. Soft records are primarily used for breaking out production by a unit, such as load records or yield monitor records. When harvesting your 2016 grain, know that if you are co-mingling grain with 2015 crop, the old production must be measured by an adjuster before you add new production. If you think you have a loss, contact your crop insurance agent within 72 hours of the discovery, but no later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period, whichever comes first. The end of the insurance period for corn and soybeans is normally Dec. 10, or when harvest is complete for that crop.

The beginning of the month of September has been less than pleasant for livestock producers. Prices for both cattle and hogs continue to deteriorate despite the fact that markets are oversold. Obviously, the bear markets are still dominating the livestock markets.

The cattle market has plummeted to lows not seen in years during the past few weeks. A combination of factors appear to be responsible for the weakness that have encompassed the cattle market for months. First, the expansion of the cattle herd is increasing the supply of live inventory — albeit ever so slow.

Second, the demand for beef is JOE TEALE nowhere near where it was three Broker years ago.

These two factors, the supply and demand, are the reason for the decline in cattle prices over the past year or more. When you increase supply and reduce demand, the result has always brought lower prices. Such is the case in the cattle market today. Another factor has been the increase in the U.S. dollar which has reduced the export of beef to other countries. Because (from a technical perspective) the market is oversold, one could anticipate some corrective rallies in the market from time to time.

However, if the current fundamentals do not change, the likelihood is the bear market will continue until there is a parity between the supply and the demand. Producers should use rallies to protect inventories as warranted.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Sept. 2.

CORN — We ushered in a new marketing year for corn and beans this week as we rolled into September. Corn slid to new contract lows without a whisper of threatening weather, as the U.S. dollar rallied and demand news was scarce. December corn fell eight straight sessions before skidding to a new contract low at $3.14.75 per bushel before finding buyers. A small bounce welcomed in the new month and ahead of the long Labor Day weekend. On the continuous chart (follows the lead contract), corn traded to its lowest level PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. since 2009 when the September St. Paul 2016 contract traded to $3.01 per bushel. The common belief is that growers this year will store corn to capture the carry and that the dismal flat price in corn is worse than in soybeans. Beans will be sold for cash flow and to make space for corn.

There have been comparisons made between this year’s corn crop and the 2014 crop. The corn rating has been similar to 2014 since the middle of July. The December 2014 corn contract made its low on Oct. 1 of that year at $3.18.25 per bushel after trending lower throughout September 2014. The contract low, so far in the December 2016 contract, was made this week on Aug. 31 at $3.14.75 per bushel. Based on the trend in 2014, it leaves the door open to further weakness in September.

Soybeans trend lower despite small price recovery NYSTROM, from pg. 15 were below expectations at 25.5 million bushels. Total 2015-16 export sales commitments are 1.97 billion bushels compared to the USDA forecast for 1.925 billion bushels. Weekly ethanol production fell by 5,000 barrels per day to 1 million bpd, but is still the third-highest production level on record. Ethanol stocks were up 109,000 barrels to 20.9 million barrels. The July U.S. Department of Agriculture grain crushing report indicated corn for ethanol was 455.4 million bushels as the conversion rate fell to 2.86 gallons per bushel versus 2.9 in June. The USDA’s 5.2 billion bushels of corn for ethanol is believed to be fairly accurate.

Corn conditions as of Aug. 28 were unchanged at 75 percent good/excellent. We should begin to see that decline as the crop reaches maturity.

was 9 percent mature, slightly behind the 11 percent average. A wellfollowed private firm is forecasting the U.S. corn yield at 174.8 bushels per acre for a record crop of 15.3 billion bushels. The August USDA numbers were 175.1 bushels per acre for a crop size of 15.15 billion bushels.

The U.S. dollar index closed higher for the week, despite a disappointing U.S. employment report. Non-farm payrolls were up 151,000 in August, but well below expectations. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.9 percent. The report suggested to traders that an interest rate increase will not happen in September, with many thinking it may not occur until after the November elections. Crude oil and refined product prices declined this week as prospects for a meaningful OPEC production freeze fell. In eight out of the last 10 years, crude oil has declined in September.

Loads: Keep a ledger by crop, recording loads of production for the crop identified by unit, field number, date of harvest, how the grain was transported, and estimated bushels per load. Storage structure: If your grain is farm-stored, mark the bin by writing the unit number, date and initial it.

All production in the storage structure must be accounted for. If harvest is complete, an adjuster will come and measure the bin. If you have flat storage, you must keep load records for each field.

Assembly sheets: When hauling directly to the elevator, write the section number that the production came from on the assembly sheet. Do not split truckload tickets and bins between units unless you have soft records for production that is co-mingled. If the adjuster has to combine the units together, it may take you out of a loss situation.

Combine monitors: Print combine monitor records and keep them with your settlement sheets. These records must show location of the field, name

OUTLOOK: With another new December contract low set this week, it wouldn’t be a stretch to expect a lower price to post as we head into harvest. Watch the U.S. dollar for signs of direction and any new export demand. As indicated on the recent Commitment of Traders report, funds continue to hold a net short position in corn. Prices may simmer between $3.00 and $3.45 per bushel until harvest gets into full swing.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans trended lower throughout the first half of the week, but held well above the low in the November 2016 contract at $8.50 per bushel, which was set in September 2015. The November contract broke a string of seven consecutive lower closes with a small recovery ahead of Labor Day weekend. The post-harvest low in the November 2016 contract is $8.68 per bushel, but we set a new low for the current move this week at $9.37 per bushel. The soybean crop is perceived as still getting bigger, and who can argue with the weather we’ve seen. The condition of the soybean crop improved 1 percent as of Aug. 28 with the good to excellent category at 73 percent. This is the highest rating ever for the end of August. Five percent of the crop was dropping leaves right on the average.

While we didn’t see as many export sales announcements this week as last week, the USDA did announce 853,000 metric tons in new sales.

The USDA’s July Oilseed Crushing report showed 153.5 million bushels of soybeans were crushed, in line with pre-report estimates and the second biggest ever for the month of July. It may be the USDA is overestimating this year’s crush by around 10 million bushels. Any decline in crush may be

of the crop, date and pounds or bushels harvested. Also, records should provide the unit number that correlates with field identification. Insurance companies will require you to submit annual calibration reports as well.

Crop shares: Even if you have only a share in a crop, make sure that you are able to provide records for the entire crop if necessary.

Feed production records: Feed records should be kept at the time the grain is being fed, preferably as a record ledger with dates and amounts fed.

If you think you have a loss or may be unsure about having one, call your crop insurance agent within 72 hours from the time you notice a loss possibility. Do not destroy any crop prior to speaking to an adjuster. Farmers who anticipate a claim of over $200,000 or more for at least one crop should begin working with their crop insurance agent as soon as possible.

Weekly export sales for old crop were 3.9 million bushels and a very strong 54.3 million bushels for new crop. Old crop export commitments climbed to 1.94 billion bushels versus the USDA’s outlook for 1.88 billion bushels.

A private firm is pegging U.S. soybean production at a record 4.127 billion bushels using a record yield of 49.5 bushels per acre. The USDA in August used 48.9 bu./acre for a 4.06 billion bushel crop. The firm’s outlook for Brazil in 2016 includes a soybean crop of 105 million metric tons with acreage up 2.6 percent. Brazil’s bean planting begins in September and is normally half done by early November.

La Niña is forecast to begin in October which normally brings drier weather to Brazil.

In related news, Brazil’s President Rousseff was impeached. Vice President Temer, who is seen as more farmer friendly, will serve out the remainder of her term which expires in 2018.

China announced it is targeting a 58 percent increase in soybean production by 2020 from 12 mmt to 19 mmt. The USDA attaché in China is projecting China will import 86 mmt of soybeans and produce 12.5 mmt, but domestic consumption will rise to 130 mmt by 2020.

OUTLOOK: While soybeans made a small recovery before Labor Day weekend, they are still in a downtrend. It seems the path of least resistance could be for weaker markets, unless demand picks up once again. For the November contract, this could mean a $9.00 to $9.75 per bushel range. ❖

The futures prices have anticipated the fall in prices for several months and continue to anticipate further weakness as witnessed by the deep discounts in deferred months.

cutout has rallied. This is of concern for further price declines. The recent cold storage figures confirm the fact that pork production has increased in recent months and that the movement of pork into the consumer venue has not appreciably increased. It would appear the competition in the meat sector is extremely fierce and the price is the ultimate factor by the consumer.

Until these factors which are currently affecting the market are resolved, look for a continued defensive price action in the hog market. Producers are urged to stay current and use rallies to protect inventories as needed. ❖

Plus we simply liked the disposition and temperament of Simmentals. Very efficient animals so they greatly expanded our marketing opportunities as well.”

That March sales of breeding stock has traditionally been a live auction at the Glacial Lakes Livestock facility in Watertown, S.D. But change is coming. In March 2017 it will be both a live auction and internet offering conducted at the Hoffman Ranch.

As a purebred seed stock provider, she may be more optimistic than other producers on the future of the cattle business.

“I think prices will straighten out,” Faith said. “We’re used to dealing in cycles. But the problem bothering all of us is how long is this depressed market going to last. Lessening the volatility out there would be a big help for all.”

The Olsens chose Holsteins to be part of their feeding program because they pencil out better than other breeds for them. They used to buy Holstein steers shipped in from Washington state. They also buy larger groups of 40-50 head from area sales barns.

Each pen has a 150-head capacity.

These Holsteins mostly come in at 400 to 450 pounds and finish out at around 1,500 pounds.

The Olsens are very carefull to not exceed their permitted level for the monoslope facility. To expand their current permits they would have to put in some type of sewage handling facility.

Chad’s dad is the environmental office administrator for Lincoln County, so Chad and Faith must set the example for everybody. ❖

We all get the same salary. There’s some notoriety perhaps. And more help. In the Senate, each gets his/her own LA (legislative assistant) whereas in the House, we share LAs. Sometimes two or three House members share the same LA. “The bigger question is, will we Republicans still be the majority? We think we can continue that position. There are just a handful of us actual farmers in the Minnesota legislature — both houses. I can only think of three of us ‘dirt farmers’ in the House. A few others have a farm background, but total identity with agriculture continues to shrink.”

“We’ll have quite a few new faces,” Paul Torkelson he said, “partly because a number of my colleagues are retiring or running for the Senate.

It’s over a dozen that we know will be leaving plus there will be some new candidates.”

Said Torkelson, “It would be great if they would come. There are a few out here.” In fact, Torkelson invited the new Minnesota Department of Human Services Commissioner Emily Johnson Piper. She spent two days at Farmfest.

“She told me she was so glad she came and interest at their booth as been terrific. She said all their handout information was gone. My point being, there are opportunities for others besides the ag sector to have a presence at Farmfest,” he said.

As a farmer, Torkelson has experienced tough times for agriculture. But he knows farmers recognize pricing cycles as inherent in agriculture and the weather man is the big player each year in determining ag prices.

“It’s very challenging right now,” said Torkelson. “There’s no doubt this fall and next spring some producers will have a difficult time getting funds they need to operate. That puts pressure on all of us here in rural Minnesota — especially the ag retailers selling seed, or farm equipment,

Torkelson is a corn-soybean crop man who also has a swine finishing building, which he provides to an integrator. “That building is a valuable asset because it also provides the nutrients I need to grow my crops,” he explained.

Interviewing a state representative leads to thoughts on the 2016 presidential election. Torkelson commented, “I honestly believe there will be more people turning out this fall to vote against a presidential candidate than to vote for a candidate. These two candidates are very controversial and for completely opposite reasons.”

Senator David Hann Senate Republican David Hann, who represents District 48 in the Eden Prairie area, stopped to talk.

“I’m the minority leader right now, but hopefully after the election that will change,” Hann said. “Even though I represent a suburban district, I have an interest in agriculture because I know the economic impact it has for our entire state. I served on the Senate Ag Committee my first eight years and think understanding agriculture is critically important for anyone that serves in the legislature no matter where you are from.

“Ag is the biggest economic engine of the state. Not enough people know this, but we all should be concerned about the agricultural industry of Minnesota. We all should be trying to make it grow and prosper. There are so

many ancillary industries that provide employment plus additional economic thrust for our entire state.

“We cannot look at this state as being just a metropolitan area.”

Hann said he was disturbed by Gov. Mark Dayton’s veto of the land tax proposal which would have made property tax more even-handed. “Agriculture land is burdened excessively in my opinion,” he said. “And we’re certainly not going down the path of the Governor and the DFL majority in proposing new taxes on the repair and maintenance of equipment. We’re not interested in finding more taxes. We’re interested in growing the economy and you do that by making it easier for people to invest and expand their businesses. Farmers are prime examples.”

Hann fielded questions on biodiesel at Farmfest, saying he believes it can continue to grow as a viable renewable energy.

“The question for our state is, will we be a state friendly to economic growth or are higher taxes and top down initiatives going to be driving this state,” he said. “I think we need to be doing things that will create growth from the bottom up.” ❖

Planting in groups of five or more assures that pollinators will easily be able to see their favorites. The declining number of butterflies and other pollinators has been the subject of much study in recent years. One study suggests a possible reason for the dwindling population might be the lack of late-season nectar plants. It behooves us as gardeners to be proactive in the preservation of pollinators by providing a sustainable habitat for them. One small step can be planting fall flowers that produce food the butterflies need. The plus for the gardener is having these fragile winged beauties regularly visiting the yard and garden.

A number of butterflies overwinter in various life stages as caterpillars, chrysalises or adults. They go dormant and freeze. Migrating butterflies require a source of nectar to sustain them on their long journeys to their winter areas. Fall flowering plants provide nutrients for refueling along the way.

One of our favorite butterfly-attracting plants is the New England aster. This is a tall grower and can reach a height of 5 feet or more. It is not unusual to see 10 to 15 Red Admiral butterflies smothering the blossoms on this striking plant in the fall. It is a great source of late season food for many pollinators.

Monarchs, the stars of the butterfly world, also feed on the nectar as they stock up on energy for their migration to Mexico.

New England aster (Aster novae-angliae) is a native prairie and roadside beauty. This is a kind of rough plant and does best in the back of a garden or border where it has enough room to spread and develop.

To keep it shorter, a good practice is to cut the stems back to about 6 inches in June. The bloom will

Cook for your man to ensure he looks good nude Cookbook Corner

By SARAH JOHNSON The Land Correspondent The act of cooking brings along a bit of power: the power to thicken (and perhaps thin) our waistlines and jowls. Whoever shops and cooks in the house is majorly responsible for the level of healthiness in the family diet. Like the old computer acronym GIGO (garbage in, garbage out), the principle is that a computer program is only as good as the data put into it.

What we put into our bodies matters.

A funny little retro cookbook, “How to Cook for Your Man & Still Want to Look at Him Naked” (Oxmoor House, 1996), takes a not-so-serious view of this process, outlining ways to keep “your man” (or “your woman,” of course) fit for taking out into the world as well as into the bedroom. Instead of just “smirking” at our loved ones, as the authors point out, we can actually help them stay trim.

With “He’ll Gobble You Up” Turkey Reuben Bake, reduced-fat ingredients are the secret to getting your cheese fix on without making your unmentionables too tight.

“He’ll Gobble You Up” Turkey Reuben Bake 3 large baking potatoes, peeled and

Coat a large skillet with cooking spray; place over medium heat until hot. Add cabbage and caraway seeds, and cook, stirring constantly, five minutes or until cabbage is wilted. Stir in salad dressing.

Spread half of potato mixture in an 11 by 7 baking dish coated with cooking spray. Top with cabbage mixture, turkey and 1 cup of cheese. Spread remaining potato mixture over cheese; top with remaining 1/2 cup of cheese.

Cook, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes until onions are lightly browned and caramelized, stirring often. (Add 2 tablespoons water if necessary to prevent sticking.)

Combine flour and 1/4 cup broth, stirring until smooth. Add to onion mixture, stirring until blended. Add remaining 9-3/4 cups broth, stirring with a wire whisk until blended. Add vermouth and brandy. Simmer, uncovered, 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

To serve, ladle into individual soup bowls and top each serving with a crouton. Yield: 8 (1-cup) servings.

Cheesy Croutons Place eight slices of day-old French bread on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Spray both sides of the bread with cooking spray. Bake at 350 F for 7-8 minutes or until lightly browned. Top each slice of bread with a slice of nonfat Swiss cheese. Return to the oven, and bake 5 additional minutes or until cheese melts.

Food scientist serves up cookies made with DDGs

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor MORGAN, Minn. — Dried Distillers grains aren’t just for livestock anymore. A scientist at South Dakota State University is developing foodgrade DDGs that can be added to flour to make baked goods for people.

DDG cookies debuted at Minnesota Farmfest 2016 to rave reviews from visitors. The cookies contained 2 percent DDGs added to flour.

Padu Krishnan, professor of food science at SDSU-Brookings, has been working on recipes using DDGs for 25 years. Krishnan and students made 5,000 cookies in the SDSU food science laboratories to bring to Farmfest. They mixed, baked, froze, packaged individually and packed again for travel.

Krishnan uses a process to clean the grains to make them pristine, extract the odor of yeast and pulverize it to a fine powder. DDGs contain 40 percent fiber and 36 percent protein. Then the powder is mixed with flour.

“It (DDGs) includes the fiber and protein content which is something we need for our health,” said Krishnan.

Krishnan has a patent pending for food grade DDGs and funding from the Minnesota Corn Growers Association.

In the third year of an MCGA grant, he also has support from the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station.

“We want to get it to market,” said Krishnan.

China is already a major market for DDGs for livestock feed, but Krishnan said China has lots of potential for food grade DDGs. The Chinese make steamed breads that can utilize up to 20 percent of DDGs mixed with flour.

They tasted like sugar cookies.

Lexi Snyder, of Dell Rapids, S.D., and a junior at SDSU-Brookings, is a food science major and chemistry minor.

She sees potential in bringing DDGs into the food market.

“I think it’s an awesome idea especially with cookies. Who doesn’t love cookies?” she asked.

While some farmers made jokes about eating what their cows eat, Snyder explained that DDGs can be more than a byproduct of ethanol. DDGs can be used to feed cattle, people and make cookies healthier.

Tanvee Deshpande, who is earning her Ph.D in food science at SDSU, is working on the project.

“I’m so loving this. It’s so fun to meet new people and interact with the farmers,” said Deshpande. “It’s a whole new experience.”

Deshpande is from Mumbai, India, and has been studying at the university for a year.

“I’m hoping to come up with other products utilizing this ingredient,” said Deshpande. ❖

“The Science Museum coming is a big plus,” said Nickel. “School districts have less funding and can’t afford to

bring the museum to each school. This gives more children the opportunity to learn.”

Support for the field day comes from a variety of sources: Cottonwood County Extension Service, Cottonwood and Redwood County Farm Bureaus, Minnesota Science Museum, Okabena Ocheda Watershed District, Redwood Electric Cooperative, South Central Electric Association and the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and Extension; and Southwest Research and Outreach Center. Midwest Dairy, South Central and Redwood County Electric Cooperatives provide funds to cover costs for the noon lunch. ❖

Benchmark milk price at highest level in 20 months The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Sept. 2.

The nation’s August federal order benchmark milk price was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at $16.91 per hundredweight, the highest it has been since December 2014, and is up $1.67 from July, 64 cents above August 2015, and the first time the Class III has been above the prior year since November 2014. It also equates to about $1.45 per gallon, up from $1.31 last month.

The Class III average is now at $14.13, down from $16.07 at this time a year ago and $22.49 in 2014. Class III futures as of late morning Sept. 2 portended a September price of $16.87; October, $16.96; November, $16.65; and December, $16.21.

The August Class IV price is $14.65 which is down 19 cents from July, but $1.75 above a year ago. Its 2016 average stands at $13.57, up from $13.53 a year ago and $23.28 in 2014.

run.” “For 17 consecutive weeks, the weekly average CME barrel price exceeded the block price,” the Report stated. “Prior to this run, the longest inverted block-barrel spread lasted seven weeks in April and May 2015. At its highest point, the weekly CME barrel price was 8.9 cents more than the weekly block average.”

The inversion is costly to cheese manufacturers, due to the milk pricing formulas used, but “An episode that was once considered rare has become an annual occurrence with increased frequency and intensity,” according to the Daily Dairy Report.

■ Midwest cheese manufacturers report milk is a little tighter and spot loads are harder to find, according to Dairy Market News, and there is concern what the cheese price will do. A few cheese makers have backed off on production. Inventories are long industry-wide for American and Italian cheese, but manufacturers say they are managing them closely and, in some cases, have been able to lower their holdings. Customers are taking regular cheese orders, but no extra, says Dairy Market News. Food service and retail demand is steady.

“Western cheese production remains active as there are very few obstacles in getting enough milk,” says Dairy Market News. “Some cheese makers are running full schedules.” Exports are sluggish, but domestic demand for natural cheese has been good. “Retail accounts are pulling good volumes and cheese is moving well through existing contracts. A few manufacturers report that although cheese supplies are long across the industry, they have been able to draw down their cheese stocks and are regularly turning over their inventories.”

Cash butter shot up to $2.11 per pound Aug. 30, then fell back and closed Sept. 2 at $2.05. This is down three-quarters on the week and 40.25 cents below a year ago. On the week, 12 cars traded hands. Cash butter has lost 22 cents since August 5.

Dairy Market News reports that with the reopening of schools, milk standardization is adding to regional cream supplies. Class II processors, especially ice cream makers, are pulling less cream intakes. “As a result, butter churning is ongoing in the central region. However, butter production is intermittent in a few plants as cream continues tight in those facilities. Some regional operators are running at full

capacity to meet upcoming fourth quarter needs. The butter market undertone is firm. Inventories are mixed throughout the region,” says Dairy Market News.

Western butter output continues to “march toward the fall baking season.

Domestic demand is firm and manufacturers report a consistent draw. Inventories and production activities are mixed between processors.”

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk finished the week at 87 cents per pound, up 2 cents and 5 cents above a year ago, with 12 cars sold on the week at the CME. ■ The USDA reported July milk production at 17.9 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from July 2015. The USDA’s latest Dairy Products report shows where that milk went.

July cheese output totaled 1.02 billion pounds, up 2.6 percent from June, and 1.4 percent above July 2015. That brought year-to-date production to 6.98 billion pounds, which is up 2 percent from a year ago.

California produced 213.2 million pounds of that cheese, which is up 2.7 percent from June and 4 percent more than a year ago. Wisconsin, at 266.1 million pounds, was up 1.5 percent from June and 1.1 percent above a year ago. Minnesota was down 4.5 percent from 2015.

Italian cheese output hit 444.2 million pounds. This is up 2.3 percent from June and 3.2 percent above a year ago, with year-to-date at 3.1 billion pounds, up 4 percent. Mozzarella, at 348.1 million pounds, was up 2.5 percent from a year ago and year-to-date was at 2.4 billion pounds, up 3.4 percent.

Total American-type cheese production was at 398 million pounds. This is up 2.2 percent from June, 0.2 percent above a year ago, with year-to-date output at 2.75 billion pounds, up 0.1 percent. Cheddar output amounted to 281.5 million pounds. This is down 1.7 percent from a year ago with year-to-date at 1.99 billion pounds, down 1 percent.

Butter churns produced 143.6 million pounds, down 5.1 percent from June, up 6 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date output at 1.17 billion pounds, up 5.6 percent.

Yogurt output amounted to 361.8 million pounds. This is down 6.9 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date hitting 2.74 billion pounds, down 1.7 percent.

The July U.S. average all-milk price was $16.10/cwt., up $1.30 from June but 60 cents below July 2015. California’s all-milk average of $14.94 was up $1.11 from June, but 18 cents below a year ago. While Wisconsin, at $16.60, was up $1.80 from June and $1.00 below a year ago.

July corn averaged $3.60 per bushel, which is down 22 cents from June and 20 cents per bushel below July 2015.

Soybeans averaged $10.20 per bushel, unchanged from June, but 25 cents per bushel above July 2015. Alfalfa hay averaged $140 per ton, down $2 from June, and $32 per ton below July 2015.

The cow side of the report shows the July cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $81.50/cwt. This is up 60 cents from June, $31.50/cwt. below

July 2015, but $9.90 above the 2011 base average of $71.60/cwt. Quarterly prices received for milk cows averaged $1,730 per head. This is down $90 from April, $300 below July 2015, but $310 above the 2011 base price.

HighGround Dairy’s Aug. 30 Executive Summary states, “The more consistent trend in China’s dairy imports has been the shift away from whole and skim milk powder (volumes still remain large) and into some of the higher-margin finished good products (food service in particular) such as UHT fluid milk and cream, cheese, butter, and infant formula, all with sharp

increases versus the prior year.”

HighGround Dairy adds, “Chinese dairy import demand does not have to experience significant growth for prices to move higher. There is less whole milk powder being offered on the GDT (Global Dairy Trade) and milk production in both New Zealand and Australia will almost undoubtedly be lower in the 2016-17 season.”

“New Zealand has represented 84 percent of China’s total milk powder and butterfat imports while both New Zealand and Australia shipped 73 percent of China’s cheese import needs January to July 2016,” HighGround Dairy says.

MIELKE, from pg. 26 Nonfat dry milk production totaled 152.9 million pounds, down 1.5 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date output at 1.1 billion pounds, down 8.2 percent. Skim milk powder production, at 46.3 million pounds, was up 32.9 percent from a year ago, with year-to-date output at 327.7 million pounds, up 30 percent from 2015.

The report also showed July nonfat dry milk stocks at 250.6 million pounds, up 8.5 percent from June but 7.2 percent below a year ago.

■ Meanwhile, a higher all-milk price and lower feed costs pushed the latest milk feed price ratio higher. The July ratio is 2.14, up from 1.91 in June and compares to 2.01 in July 2015, according to the USDA’s Ag Prices report.

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration of 51 percent corn, 8

Senators urge investigation of Canada’s pricing policy MIELKE, from pg. 27 “The global WMP market is poised to get back to its five-year average in the coming months but unless there is a significant hiccup in milk output from the current global trajectory (slightly below

prior year) or a sharp reversal in the demand trend the five-year average could be where prices find sharp resistance,” HighGround Dairy predicts.

China suspended flights of fresh milk from Victoria this week, due to what it claimed was “disease

causing bacteria” in the Australian milk.

■ I read an interesting perspective this week in the Belfast Telegraph, which quoted David Dobbin, outgoing United Group chief executive, who spoke at an animal science conference in Belfast, Ireland.

Dobbin stated, “There is a demographic time bomb going to hit the west of Europe if we do not do something to tackle the low consumption rates of dairy products in the younger generations.

“If current trends are repeated when the young enter the next generations, then there will be a sharp fall-off in dairying (due to lack of demand) and that is something we have to try and address now.”

Is that a scenario we are seeing or will see in America?

■ In other trade news, a joint press release reports that the U.S. Dairy Export Council and the National Milk Producers Federation praised Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) for “urging an investigation into Canadian dairy pricing policies that have impacted current trade and stand to negatively affect U.S. dairy farmers and manufacturers, jeopardizing the country’s trade commitment to the United States.”

“In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Schumer and Baldwin expressed concern about Canada’s recently announced National Ingredients Strategy and its already active Ontario Class VI pricing program. According to the senators, these programs incentivize Canadian processors to use Canadian milk and dairy inputs, penalizing them for the use of imported dairy products.”

“We are particularly concerned about reports that through these types of programs, Canada is moving to target New York and Wisconsin exports of ultrafiltered milk,” the letter continues. “Companies from our states inform us that they have already lost considerable export sales as a result of the Ontario dairy policy introduced this past spring.”

Schumer and Baldwin also voiced their concern that implementing the new National Ingredients Strategy across Canada could raise further compliance issues with Canada’s NAFTA and WTO obligations by ‘impeding dairy trade’ between the two countries,” the press release states.

■ The International Dairy Foods Association has selected veterinarian Michael D. Dykes to replace Connie Tipton, president and CEO of IDFA. An IDFA press release stated that Dykes has had a professional career “leading and executing agricultural government affairs policies and strategies,” and “will work in transition with Tipton beginning in October. He becomes CEO in January 2017.

n 1899, Pehr Christianson completed the design and construction of a wooden church pulpit. The pulpit was made of five large panels. Each panel was an intricately portrayed biblical scene carved in relief. Above and below each of the biblical scenes were a total of 15 smaller panels of text in a Swedish dialect.

Christianson, who once carved a ship in a bottle, used only his jack knife to meticulously carve each perfect letter of the text. He also used his jack knife to carve the images and the background of the scenes.

After he completed his carving work, Christianson, a Swedish immigrant and former merchant marine sailor, painted the pulpit’s panels in black and shades of gold. The indented text is in gold with a black background. For painting the finest details of the biblical scenes and lettering, Christianson created very delicate paint brushes made from his wife’s hair.

Upon completion, Christianson presented the pulpit to his church, the Swedish Lutheran Church of Spruce Hill, in Douglas County, Minnesota. For his efforts, Christianson, who also served as the church’s secretary, asked for $25. He received $18.

“Pehr was offered $1,500 from the Catholic Church, but felt it belonged in his church,” Annie Skoglund of the Douglas County Historical Society said.

The pulpit was at first installed in the log church built by the Swedes at Spruce Hill in the 1880s. Spruce Hill lay next to the aptly named Spruce Creek, a Long Prairie River tributary. The church was also adjacent to the Ottertail Trail — one of Central Minnesota’s most important roads at the time.

As a result, by 1899, Spruce Hill was a busy commercial center with two sawmills on the creek and the log church was too small for the growing population. In 1902, the white frame building which today stands along the old Ottertail Trail was built. The pulpit was moved into the new church.

Spruce Hill eventually came upon hard times.

All that remains today, thanks to dedicated area residents and ancestors of the Swedish pioneers, the Douglas County Historical Society, and the County Parks Department, are the pulpit, the pretty church and a quiet county park.

Three times each year, residents and the historical society organize nondenominational services and celebrations at the church. The public is welcome to attend. Pehr Christianson’s pulpit can be viewed on these occasions. The next service will be during the Christmas holidays.
