Can trade — free, fair, or otherwise — get some love this election season?

Fat chance.

In fact, the only national politician four-square in favor of global trade and its latest multi-nation deal, the TransPacific Partnership is no one anyone could have seen in that FARM & FOOD FILE role: Barack Obama.

Perhaps. And if so, that Chicago team probably has a better chance to win in October than the other Chicago team, the Obama White House, has at winning in November when the President hopes to move TPP through an increasingly reluctant Congress.

Political rust bucket that it has become, TPP’s slow sinking isn’t due to just presidential sniping. If it goes down, other trade traitors will have had a hand.

For example, Republican Senator Pat Toomey, locked in a tough re-election bid in Pennsylvania, denounced TPP in mid-August while trolling for blue-collar votes. It was a stunning turnaround for Toomey, the former president of the Club for Growth, Big Biz’s most ardent free trade lobbying group.

Toomey may be a turncoat, but he isn’t a stupid turncoat. He, like many other politicians, sense that this complex, 12-nation trade deal — like free trade itself — has lost value with American rank-and-file workers and, just as importantly, white collar voters.

This isn’t new. The World Trade Organization’s Doha Development Round began in 2001 with 2005 as its target date for completion. After endless sessions of ceaseless talking, negotiations turned bellyto-the-sun last November in Nairobi (at the ripe age of 14) without a final deal.

Doha’s collapse, in truth, arrived years earlier without anyone recognizing that the world — and international trade deals — had gotten smaller. The template, NAFTA, or the North American Free Trade Agreement, was already in place and an alphabet soup of other regional deals (CAFTA, KORUS) and other nation-to-nation deals (Australia, Israel, Panama, Peru…) soon followed even as the Doha yakkers continued to yak.

In the meantime, the small deals got bigger and the big deals got smaller.

But TPP bucks that trend. It’s big and getting bigger. For example, can anyone possibly know what TPP’s 18,000 tax changes mean for American farmers, companies and sovereignty in a deal that includes 11 other nations and 40 percent of the world’s existing trade?

The answer is, of course, no. Not now, not ever.

Moreover, even those who claim to have some insight often confess that when they view TPP over the next 15 years (the deal’s implementation period) its down-on-the-farm effect will be, at best, marginal

In truth, it’s far more likely that American farmers will get a bigger market bump out of one wheat-soaking April rain in Kansas or a warm, dry July in Indiana than TPP will or can ever deliver.

The AFBF all but confirms this outlook in its report’s bottom line: “After … full implementation, net income should be $4.4 billion higher with U.S. ratification than without.”

If that $4.4 billion yearly boost to

U.S. net farm income does materialize over the next 15 years, it will be roughly equivalent to the $4.2 billion more U.S. taxpayers will send to American farmers in direct farm program payments this year than just two years ago.

In their analysis of TPP however, neither the AFBF nor the Obama White House estimated just how many American farmers and ranchers will be around for its paltry payday.

methodically, understanding that the cemetery needed to be mowed whether we had the time to take away from the farm or not. The grass was still going to grow.

Our children learned that it was important to be respectful of the stones because they represented someone’s life.

And although walking on the cemetery lawn is something people do, they learned to respect a fresh grave and not walk on it or drive over it while mowing.

Once in a while, someone would stop and ask us where someone’s grave was.

Most of the time we knew. Even our children knew over time where someone specific was buried. They too, mowed around the graves of people with whom they had shared their lives as they were growing up.

We read stones as we mowed — older people, young people, children ... so many people placed there with great care, grief and sorrow. Their gravesites were watered with the tears of those who loved them.

At their young age, our children came to know it as sacred ground, holy ground. It taught them about the brevity of this life, given the fact that they knew people who were buried there. It also gave them a healthy respect for our vet-

erans who also rest there.

Memorial Day weekend brought about a thick sprinkling of flowers and flags and made it seem a little less like a forgotten place. It was actually a beautiful place every year then.

It would be difficult to return to that job now, given the fact that our children have all grown up and are living their own lives. But over the years I have been grateful for that time spent together as a family doing something that mattered, and for what it taught our children about compassion, care for those who have gone before us, respect and responsibility.

George Burns once said, “Don’t take life too seriously — we’re not getting out of it alive anyway.” He was right. And after we’re gone, someone will be along with lawn equipment to mow around our stones, helping others see that we, too, were once among the living.

It’s the important legacy of a cemetery caretaker even if it starts out as a farm kid’s summer job.

Cage-free egg truths More than 100 companies purchasing eggs now are demanding their sources produce cage-free eggs. The idea of chickens roaming about, scratching in the dirt, elicits an idealistic thought that it leads to better animal welfare and better quality eggs. The National Association of Egg Farmers wants consumers to know that this is simply not true.

Removing chickens from cages, where they have been for decades, will lead to issues with more chickens dying. Chickens establish a “pecking order” among those in their group. Imagine a flock of thousands of chickens establishing a pecking order among themselves. Those lower on the pecking order are pecked more often. This is minimized in a cage environment where only a few birds are placed.

Cage-free eggs are more likely to be contaminated with bacteria due to prolonged exposure from litter and manure in the nest boxes or on the ground. The most recent Salmonella enteritidis (a foodborne pathogen) outbreak linked to eggs comes from a cagefree farm in Lebanon, Ohio. A recent

Food and Drug Administration warning letter was issued to a cage-free egg farmer in Missouri. Yet the narrative that cage-free chickens produce a better quality egg gains traction because few are exposing this false premise.

As for the workers in cage-free barns, the amount of dust, which can transmit pathogens, inside the barn represents a health risk to farm workers, and the need for workers to collect floor eggs creates ergonomic challenges, too.

Farmers want to please their customers and so there will be more cagefree farms built. But the smaller farmer will struggle with the estimated costs of $40 per bird for the labor, building, feeders, waters, and nests in their cage-free barns. The larger egg farmers will build these structures and increase their market share as the smaller farms cannot compete and simply quit the business. The end result will be fewer, but larger farms producing eggs.

Stromberg’s is the place to find your exotic flock

By TIM KING The Land Correspondent PINE RIVER, Minn. — It’s a typical Saturday morning in Pine River, and Eric and Laura Stromberg are enjoying their coffee while watching their backyard flock of chickens. Eric is the fourth generation of the Stromberg family to manage the nearly 100-year-old hatchery and poultry supply business known as Stromberg’s Chicks and Game Birds Unlimited.

All week long they ship hobby farm supplies and birds, but on Saturday mornings, the Strombergs are like any other family enjoying their poultry flock.

“My wife kind of goes bird crazy every year,” Eric said. “We’ve got all kinds of birds in our flock. She loves the Polish right now. They are a weird looking chicken with a puff ball of feathers on their head.

They are more of an ornamental and not really a good layer but they are a lot of fun for her to watch.

She’s also got Speckled Sussex, Welsummers and Javas that follow her around the yard. She wasn’t a chicken person before she married me.”

The prolific egg laying White Leghorn is one of Eric’s favorites.

“It’s the bird that got my great grandfather started in the business in Iowa in 1921,” he said.

“When people come out to our home to look at our flock, I like to point out the Leghorn and tell them about our history.”

During its history, Stromberg’s has evolved with American agriculture.

“When my grandfather ran the business in the 1960s, farmers stopped raising their own food and started buying it at the new supermarkets,” Eric said.

In particular, most farms began eliminating their home egg laying and broiler flocks. As farmers became specialists in pork production, dairy production, or grain, they increasingly purchased their chickens and eggs in supermarkets.

That caused the small hatcheries that had served them to go out of business. Stromberg’s, which had moved from Iowa to Minnesota by then, was no exception. But Eric’s grandfather only closed the business for two years before restarting it in its present form.

“He mortgaged his home to borrow money to start Stromberg’s as we know it today,” Eric said. “I guess once you’re an entrepreneur you can’t quit.”

Today, Stromberg’s sells over eighty types of chickens including rare breeds such as the ornamental Crevecoeur, Sultan, and Golden Campine, which is designated by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy as critically endangered. They also sell ducks, turkey, pheasants, quail, pigeons, doves, guinea fowl, pea fowl, pheasants, quail, and even swans. But, when you order birds from Stromberg’s, your order is drop shipped from another hatchery that specializes in producing only a few top quality breeds and species of birds.

“We have hatcheries throughout the United States that we‘ve worked with for many years,” Eric said.

“We choose hatcheries that can provide the best quality and the best variety of birds. This is common practice in the hatchery business and even the hatcheries that are still hatching eggs do some drop shipping. Nobody can raise all those breeds. If nothing else, you’d have a biosecurity problem if you had all these different birds at the same farm.”

No eggs have been hatched at Stromberg's for more than forty years. Well, almost none. Stromberg’s actually sells fertile eggs from some chicken breeds and other fowl species to back yard poultry enthusiasts.

“We sell different styles of egg incubators for the hobby farmer,” Eric said. “We incubate eggs at the office every year as practice for our customer service reps. We usually incubate chicken eggs every year and then, on top of that, we try to hatch some-

thing new or different like quail or guinea fowl.”

Stromberg’s sell incubators that can incubate from ten to hundreds of eggs.

Eric says customers who buy eggs or incubators usually have a lot of questions for his employees.

“It helps that our staff has actual experience incubating eggs,” he says. “I think it was incubation that got my wife interested in raising poultry,” Eric said. “It’s a lot of fun to see them hatch. I like it because it brings a scientific element into the whole process of raising poultry.”

Eric says you should be ready for your baby chicks if you order them.

Baby chicks are guaranteed to arrive alive and for forty-eight hours after arrival.

If you want your own back yard-produced eggs for breakfast, but don’t want to go through the trouble and expense of raising chicks, some breeds of chickens are available for purchase at seventeen to twenty weeks of age.

That’s about the age they start laying.

“I bought some years ago and one of them had laid an egg in the shipping container,” Eric said.

The last flu outbreak was June 2015. There was an isolated HPAI case from a different strain this January on an Indiana farm. Its birds as well as a chicken-laying barn on an adjacent road were depopulated. As of this date, HPAI has not reoccurred in the United States; although it is found in other countries around the world, said Williams.

Both producers and consumers question whether avian flu is no longer a threat.

“Any flu virus can be seasonal plus lie dormant; or change its structure and ability to infect wild birds or sicken domestic poultry,” Williams explained. “The industry constantly evaluates its security procedures to limit the risk to U.S. poultry flocks.”

The use of antibiotics for prevention and cure of poultry diseases will continue at the end of this year.

However, growers will be required to get approval

Older birds are easy to care for reading a book on the subject before starting out.

Storey’s “Guide to Raising Poultry” is a very thorough beginner’s book. If you are interested in incubation, “A Guide to Better Hatching” is what they recommend. There are also good books on raising the other species that Stromberg’s sells as well as books on flock health and care.

Lawn and garden tip: Get chickens In addition to fertilizer and soil aeration, chickens can help control weeds and insects in your garden and lawn. Chickens love a lot of the things that gardeners do not — like weeds and insects. They forage for seeds and bugs, eat small plants and clean up fallen fruit and green leaves.

When it comes to toxicity, chickens will typically avoid poisonous plants. However, consider removing plants like poison ivy, boxwood, honeysuckle, nightshade, monkshood, oleander, tobacco and yew.

Consistency is important for chickens allowed to free-range in the garden. Training birds to know specific cues will help them return to the coop at night or during storms. Train chickens to come back to the coop when called. Start with small periods of supervised time in the garden and work up to longer periods. Maintain a routine with how and when you let the chickens free-range.

It is important to remember plants and insects aren’t a complete diet. Provide all the nutrients chickens require with a complete chicken feed each morning before letting birds out to free-range.

Chickens should have access to the feed throughout the day.

Each garden comes with a sense of pride and the joy of sustainability. Imagine if you had a natural way to fertilize, control weeds, manage insects and improve soil aeration. Many of today’s gardeners have found this solution through backyard chickens.

Chicken waste is an excellent source of fertilizer for both the lawn and garden. Manure from freerange chickens can break down naturally in the yard, providing valuable nutrients for the lawn.

The correct balance for free-ranging is about 250 square feet of space per chicken.

To use chicken manure as garden fertilizer, consider creating a compost area. This process can reduce the nitrogen levels found in raw manure.

When maintaining compost, remember to keep it enclosed. Chickens love foraging for scraps in compost areas, and eating too many scraps can dilute the nutrients in the diet.

Vigilance and strict biosecurity continue to be key to prevention.

“Thanks to a coordinated biosecurity response, not only in Minnesota but other turkey-producing states, there have been no incidences to date in 2016,” said Williams.

Exports continue to be vital to the U.S. turkey industry with slightly more than 10 percent of yearly production being marketed elsewhere.

Turkey exports totaled 47 million pounds in May which is 20 percent higher than May 2015. The top three export markets are Mexico, Hong Kong, with South Korea and Canada roughly tied as the third largest destination. Even with the huge concern of avian flu impact, no country has banned imports of U.S. turkey.

“What occurred last year were regional outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. The out- Keith Williams break claimed 40 million egg-laying chickens and nearly 8 million turkeys. Minnesota was hardest hit because it is the largest turkey producing state in the nation. A total of 108 poultry farms (104 were turkey farms) were hit, but all are now back in business,” said Williams.

Williams estimates the minimal economic impact to be a 3 percent loss out of the nation’s 250 million turkey population.

“Avian influenza refers to a class of flu viruses which can be deadly to domestic poultry. However,

August 26 Andy Pulk can cross one crop off his harvest to-do list. The Land spoke with Pulk on Aug. 26 as he reported that the “rye grass is done and is all in the bin and safe.” Pulk completed rye grass harvest on Aug. 19. Due to the wet summer the “crop is poorer than I would have like to have seen it.” The heavy rains have seemed to have stayed away lately for the Pulk farm. “We’ve gotten scattered showers, no big Joan Lee, McIntosh, Minn.

August 26 Breaking equipment has been a constant theme for Joan Lee this summer and oat harvest was no exception. The Land spoke with Lee on Aug. 26 as she reported: “We got half the oats combined, then our combine broke down.” Lee and her husband, Mark, were able to borrow a friend’s combine to do the oats.

After oats “then it came to the straw. I had problems with the baler again.” Lee said she has “learned a lot with the baler this year.”

A third crop hay chopping has begun, Mark started baling on Aug. 24 and will be baling more today.

Wheat harvest was complete on Aug. 25. An unfortunate causality of the harvest was Mark’s phone. It seemed to have gone through the combine and is now missing.

With machinery breakdowns, a lost phone and some wet weather, “the frustration had set in.” Lee and Mark decided to take a day away from the farm and on Aug. 20 headed to the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers Show where they “had a fun relaxing time.”

The soybean fields are wet, the corn “cobs look good size” and are “filling out.” Overall, harvest so far, Lee said, “The oats ran really well, wheat no so much.”

Lee is keeping her fingers crossed that early frost and rain stays away and that the machinery doesn’t cause her any more trouble.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa August 18 The lack of rain is “not horrible, but it’s starting to get on the dry side.” The Land spoke with Kent Moser on Aug. 18, as he reported that the crops are starting to show the effects of little moisture.

Thankfully there are cooler temperatures in the forecast along with some expected rain for Aug. 19.

The corn is “a little bit stressed.” Moser saw some tip-back issues in corn but he reported that it’s “not as widespread as I first thought.” “Crop is going to be pretty variable,” Moser added.

If the soybeans keep missing the rain then Moser expects it will be an average bean yield. Right now for the beans, Moser said, “It’s all about getting weight on.” Moser is still scouting for soybean aphids. This year has been average for aphids. The amount of spraying for soybean aphids though is “below average.” Moser has noticed that he’s “not seeing as much disease as last year.” He attributes that to the heat which “slows down some disease.”

For corn, Moser said, “I anticipate an earlier harvest than normal” as it’s “further along on heat units” this year. The crops will soon have a respite from the heat and if the forecast is correct, they should be getting some much-needed moisture.

Those scattered showers have put a damper on wheat harvest so far for Pulk. “Last weekend we took a couple samples that were really wet, much wetter than I anticipated.”

That coupled with the “running into green wheat” isn’t the great start to the harvest that Pulk was hoping for. With lower wheat prices, Pulk plans to take a discount at the elevator rather than dry the wheat himself. Once wheat harvest gets into full swing, Pulk estimates that it will take “a week and we’ll be wrapped up.”

The wet fields allowed Pulk to spend some time doing something else besides sitting in a combine. He and his daughter and some friends hit Lake of the Woods on Aug. 22 where they caught between 60 and 65 fish.

Wet conditions have delayed the start of wheat harvest but being on the lake, catching a boat-load of fish is certainly a nice way to pass the time.

John Nielsen, Albert Lea, Minn.

August 18 The Nielsen farm is “sitting really good” for moisture, thanks to 1.5 inches of rain that fell. The Land spoke with John Nielsen on Aug. 18. as he reported that the moisture “was kind of needed.”

With that rain, he said, “I don’t think we need too much more.”

The rain has put a damper on getting the hay cut. If the weather cooperates, Nielsen expects to start hay production soon. He reported that the soybeans are “up to our shoulders.” Nielsen is, however, “seeing some sudden death.” Nielsen spotted some beans with sudden death syndrome while driving around the area looking at the plants. He hasn’t had any white mold issues.

The corn has experienced a “fair amount” of tip-back. “There’s more tip-back than I originally thought,” he said. Nielsen said that he feels that that was due to the heat earlier in the summer and “no cooling at night.” Even with the tip-back, Nielsen is “still optimistic with corn.”

Harvest is just around the corner. Nielsen will soon begin harvest equipment preparation. “It won’t take too long,” he said. There’s a little fun planned in the midst of the farm work as Nielsen will take some of his seed customers to Stillwater on Aug. 19 for a dinner cruise on the St. Croix River and he has a family reunion Aug. 21. Lots of hard work and some good memories being made is what the summer is all about for Nielsen.

Pigeon racing is much more than just winging it

The homing instinct is innate, but there is still training involved. He starts by crating the young pigeons and releasing them near the loft.

Then he will go out a mile or two for the release. Each time he increases the distance.

“I go all the way out to Highway 81 in South Dakota, about 60 miles, and let them go there two or three times, then they go to their first race, which will be Aug. 6,” he said.

Ludolph credits his success to picking good pigeons.

Since these are all homing pigeons, each headed for a different destination at different distances, pigeon races require some precise calculations to determine the winner.

“We have a GPS reading at the loft, and a GPS reading at the release point,” Ludolph explained. “We have a formula and we can figure the mileage out.”

Pigeons are transported to the release point in crates on a trailer. At a given time, a lever is pulled and all the crates open, much like the gates at a horse race. The pigeons head for home.

When the pigeons enter their home loft, they walk over a scanner.

“It records the bird, the hour, the minute, the second, and the day that the bird comes in,” he said. “Then that information is put in a computer and it figures the fastest bird and the speed that the bird goes. Head wind, tail wind, and other weather conditions will affect a pigeon’s performance.

“We watch the weather real close,” Ludolph said.

“If it’s going to be a bad day, we cancel the race.”

However, if the race is going to be held and he sees it will be a little tough for him because of the

wind, he doesn’t enter as many pigeons.

Ludolph keeps a loft of 28 cocks that he races. These are called the “old birds.” He also keeps 28 hens that he does not race. They are an incentive to the cocks to get back home. The old birds’ racing season is May, June and the first week of July. After that they start molting.

This year he purchased 30 young birds that he is training. Their racing season is August and September.

“The young birds are on what’s called the dark system, so they don’t molt until I quit racing them,” he said. With the young birds he races both the cocks and the hens.

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent PIPESTONE, Minn. — Mike Ludolph of Pipestone has been racing pigeons since 1981. Long before then, he got acquainted with them as a boy by working for Leo Roscoe, cleaning lofts and helping generally. Roscoe had 4,000 to 5,000 fancy pigeons in lofts on his farm.

“Pipestone was a big pigeon town,” Ludolph said. Today, there are three or four owners still around. And when it comes to racing, Ludolph is one of the most successful.

Ludolph is a member of Great Plains Flyers Club out of Sioux Falls, S.D. They tie in with a club from Watertown, S.D., for most of their races. They also take part in the Minnesota Invitation series sponsored by Twin Cities Concourse Association, where Ludolph said there will be 1,000 birds from 60 or more lofts. But his favorite race is the biggest in the United States — the Midwest Classic out of Topeka, Kan., sponsored by the Midwest Homing Pigeon Association.

“There will be over 7,000 pigeons from 400 to 600 lofts,” Ludolph said.

“It’s my favorite race. I’ve won it a couple times and been second a lot.”

His success includes numerous national awards and over a dozen

Hawks, not illness, threaten pigeons PIGEONS from pg. 9 breeding birds.” Because he has been dealing with health issues, he sold his breeders and now purchases young birds from the Continental Breeding Station in Oklahoma City. He always chooses birds who come from generations of racers.

Most of the birds are bred out of Belgium, he said, with a little Dutch blood in them. Belgium appears to be the hotspot for racing pigeons. He knows of one bird over there that sold for $600,000. Ludolph doesn’t pay that kind of money for his birds, but he chooses those that come from the best racing lines.

“After a racing season I’ll look at their race records.

The ones that have done really well I’ll keep. The ones that didn’t do so well, I won’t keep. I donate of lot of these birds to auctions.” Even those he donates he says “must have an excellent pedigree.” He sells a small number of birds each year.

Choosing good stock and training are two of Ludolph’s keys to success. The other is taking good care of the birds.

After the racing season, “the rest of the year you keep them happy and feed them well.” The feed he purchases through Pipestone Grain has six or seven different kinds of corn plus other grain, providing different nutrients. He said the birds do not have a lot of health issues. He is more likely to lose a bird to a hawk than to illness.

“There’s a kid from South Dakota whose been coming and getting eggs from me and he’s doing pretty good,” Ludolph said.

Mike Ludolph got interested when he was a kid, and it led him into a world of racing that few people are acquainted with. Listening to his story, it sounds like a world worth exploring. But don’t expect monetary rewards. Except for an occasional trophy, the real rewards are the respect one earns among other racers, and the personal satisfaction of seeing your loft perform well. ❖

Design strategy a must for coops To create a backyard oasis for your birds, think long-term for location, space and design. Some cities have regulations about distance to neighbors, buildings, roads or property lines. A flat area simplifies the process and the area should have good drainage.

The coop location should provide both sun and shade for the birds and should be close to water, electricity and feed storage.

There are three primary chicken coop types: chicken tractors, chicken wagons and stationery coops.

Chicken tractors are built similarly to a wheelbarrow, with two wheels and handles for mobility. Routinely moving the structure helps birds explore new areas, control insects and fertilize the lawn.

Chicken wagons work well for those wanting a large, movable coop. The wagons are on four wheels and include a ramp for birds to enter.

Chicken sheds, or stationery coops with runs, are the most common form of chicken coops. They work well in both rural and urban areas because they require minimal space and provide both outdoor and indoor access.

Regardless of the design selected, adequate space is essential. Provide at least four square feet of indoor space and 5-10 square feet of outdoor space per bird. Birds will lay eggs and sleep inside but often spend most of their time outside in the run.

Provide at least two feet of roosting space per bird for sleeping. Chickens like to sleep high off the ground. A board that measures 2 by 4 inches, with the wide edge facing up can work well for a roost.

Build nesting boxes with easy access for egg removal. A general rule is to provide one 1-foot square nest box for every four or five hens because the flock will take turns using the boxes. Keep the nests up off the floor in the darkest corner of the coop.

A coop should have a covered outdoor run for the birds to enjoy fresh air. Secondly, it provides security from predators. And most importantly, it provides a measure of biosecurity by not allowing droppings from wild birds to land in the area occupied by chickens. Place your feeders and waterers in the covered runs so the coops stay dry and clean.

You can predator-proofed your coop by placing screens on the doors, windows and runs. Used galvanized welded wire instead of chicken wire as chicken wire can stretch and allow predators access to the run. Bury galvanized welded wire six inches underground, parallel to the walls of the coop and run.

Bend the wire 90 degrees to run the wire out from the coop parallel to the ground — about 6 inches — and cover the wire with dirt. If a predator tries to dig under the coop or run, they hit the buried welded wire, and stop digging.

As days get shorter, hens need additional light to continue laying eggs. In order to provide 17 hours of light per day, add electrical outlets to your coop. Allow one incandescent 40-watt or LED 9 to 13-watt bulb per 100 square feet of coop space. An automatic timer will keep hens on a laying and sleeping schedule.

The lower corn MYA price also means that there could be a small payment in October for producers who have their corn base acres enrolled in the Price Loss Coverage option for the 2014-2018 crop years.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture updates the average MYA price estimates for a given marketing year on a monthly basis in the USDA Supply and Demand report, which is usually released around the middle of each month and provides a pretty good price estimate for potential ARC-CO payments.

USDA also publishes monthly and season-average estimated market prices for various commodities, which are available on the Farm Service Agency website at goo.gl/RBrG7E. Some universities also update projected MYA prices on a monthly basis for selected crops. Kansas State University offers one of the best monthly updates of MYA prices for corn, soybeans, and wheat. Benchmark revenue The county benchmark revenue for a given crop is the county BM yield times the BM price for the year, which is the same price across the United States. The BM prices for corn and soybeans for the 2015 crop year remained the same as 2014 BM prices, which are $5.29 per bushel for corn and $12.27 per bushel for soybeans. The BM prices are adjusted each year, using the USDA’s MYA price for the preceding five years, then dropping the high and low MYA price, and averaging the other three MYA prices.

The 2015 BM county yield for a given crop was calculated by taking the average county yields for the previous five years (2010-2014), dropping the high and low yield, and averaging the other three yields.

The BM corn yields in most Minnesota counties declined in 2015 due to the very low average county yields in 2014, as well as the elimination of the 2009 year from the BM calculation, which was a very strong yield year in most areas. Many counties in south-central, southwest and central Minnesota had the county BM corn yields decline by 8-12 bushels per acre from 2014 to 2015.

The relationship between the final 2015 county yield and the 2015 county BM yields is extremely important in calculating potential 2015 ARC-CO payments for corn and soybeans. Following is a guide on the likelihood of 2015 ARC-CO payments at various percentage of BM yield levels at the current MYA price estimates ($3.60/bu. for corn and $8.95/bu. for soybeans).

Corn • Any county that has a percentage of BM yield of less than 112 percent will likely realize the maximum estimated 2015 ARC-CO payment for that county.

• Counties with a percentage of BM yield of 112 percent to 118 percent will likely receive 50 percent to 99 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment.

• Counties with a percentage of BM yield of 119 percent to 127 percent will likely receive 1 percent to 49 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment.

• Counties with a percentage of BM yield of 128 percent or higher will likely not receive a 2015 ARCCO payment.

Soybeans • Any county that has a percentage of BM yield of less than 104 percent will likely realize the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment for that county.

• Counties with a percentage of BM yield of 104 percent to 111 percent will likely receive 50 percent to 99 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment.

• Counties with a percentage of BM yield of 112 percent to 117 percent will likely receive 1 percent to 49 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment.

• Counties with a percentage of BM yield of 118 percent or higher will likely not receive a 2015 ARC-CO payment.

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service released the 2015 estimated average county yields for corn, soybeans, and other crops in late winter, which can be used to estimate potential 2015 ARCCO payments. The NASS yields may be adjusted slightly by USDA to arrive at the final 2015 BM yields and county FSA yields, which are used to calculate the 2015 ARC-CO payments.

The 2015 NASS county yields are available at http://www.nass.usda. gov/ Tables A and B on page 13 show the likelihood of 2015 ARC-CO payments for corn and soybeans at the various final 2015 MYA prices, with various percentage of BM yield levels.

Following are the estimated 2015 NASS corn yields, estimated 2015 corn ARC-CO payments, and percentage of BM yield for each county: • Blue Earth — 201 bu./acre, $50/base acre (117 percent) • Faribault — 207 bu./acre, $43/base acre (118 percent) • Martin — 203 bu./acre, $67/base acre (114 percent) • Nicollet — 207 bu./acre, zero (128 percent) • Watonwan — 206 bu./acre, $73/base acre (113 percent) Remember that the 2015 corn and soybean ARC-CO payment levels are still estimates and these payments could vary.

MYA price levels could have further changes between now and Aug. 31. If MYA prices decline, the likelihood or the level of ARC-CO payments increases, and vice-versa if the MYA price increases. The likelihood of major movements in the final MYA prices decreases later in the 2015-16 marketing year, due to likely lower weightings for the monthly price averages in the final months.

Adjustments can be made by USDA in the NASS yields which are used to calculate 2015 ARC-CO payments.

2014 corn yields in some counties were adjusted considerably downward due to a large number of unharvested acres in those counties. This adjustment is not likely to be as significant with 2015 NASS yields in the upper Midwest.

There will likely be a 6.8 percent federal sequestration reduction on all 2015 ARC-CO payments paid in October 2016; similar to the 2014 ARC-CO

payments that were paid in 2015.

However, very few will get the maximum payment. Several counties in central Minnesota, as well as a few selected counties in other areas, will likely receive no 2015 corn ARC-CO payment. Except for a few counties in southeast and northwest Minnesota, there will be little or no 2015 soybean ARC-CO payments. Counties in many portions of Illinois, Indiana and other states in the eastern Corn Belt will likely receive the maximum, or close, 2015 ARC-CO payments for corn and soybeans, due to much lower yield levels in 2015.

U of M needs financial infusion for upkeep soon

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer MORGAN, Minn. — Starting his sixth year as president of the University of Minnesota and visiting Farmfest for the fifth year, Eric Kaler can take the heat.

“It’s warm today here at Farmfest; but for me, a tremendous opportunity to meet face-to-face great people,” Kaler said. “I’ve long thought that people involved in agriculture are something special. They do such a tremendous job of growing the food for all Americans plus people in other countries. I’m proud to be here and being part of this special gathering of Minnesota farm families.”

Kaler talked optimistically about a just-announced new program known as the Agricultural Research, Education, Extension and Technology Transfer program (AGREETT) that will bring $5 million of state funded money into the U of M College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences; University of Minnesota Extension; and the College of Veterinary Medicine to address several areas of significance for the ongoing development of agriculture in Minnesota. This money is processed through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

“I say there is no greater investment the state can make than in its great land grant institution – the University of Minnesota,” said Kaler. “We have so many disciplines within our university:

a great science and engineering school, great business school, a strong food and agricultural science school. So when you think about cutting edge decisions around precision agriculture — such as the policy implications of water use and land use — we are able to bring together powerful voices to bear exactly on these kinds of problems.”

Coincidentally, the South Dakota Board of Regents recently approved a new precision agriculture curriculum for its students beginning this fall.

SDSU’s bachelor of science degree in precision agriculture is the first in the United States.

“I congratulate our sister institution,” said Kaler. “Thanks to the tremendous interest in precision agriculture, we are seeing a collaboration of efforts amongst our various land grant colleges. We have graduate students and

professors on our staff deeply committed to research, development and education in the rapidly expanding world of precision agriculture.”

In view of the huge world dependence on a healthy and thriving agricultural economy, why are activists continuing to keep agriculture in the bull’s eye of environmental degradation?

“Psychologically, I don’t think I’m gifted to address that issue,” said Kaler. “In our society today there is a lot of push back against science. You see it in the controversy on global warming, the ongoing debate about GMOs, you see it in the debate about childhood vaccinations ... just a lot of issues where people seem to feel they can have their own set of facts. I’m a scientist. In my world, there are a set of facts that are true.You can have your own opinions, but you can’t have

your own facts.”

Kaler mentioned the buffer strip issue here in Minnesota as a classic example of differing opinion.

“No one is satisfied with the status quo,” he said. “Putting the blame on agriculture for water runoff polluting our waters simply is not factual. The question is, what is the best, most effective, most cost efficient and most environmentally responsible solution?

Scientists and policy people working together ought to be able to answer that question.”

What key issue is most important to the University of Minnesota?

“We are hopeful for a special session.

It’s critical to the university that we get a bonding bill this time around. We have 29 million square feet of real estate spread across our five campuses and our research and outreach stations.

We simply need money to repair, upgrade and replace much of these properties,” he said. “We can’t wait.

We’ve got pipes breaking and roofs leaking. We need a medical education building on the Twin Cities campus. We need a chemistry and advanced materials building on the Duluth campus. We need a research greenhouse on the St. Paul campus that can be tremendously helpful to our agricultural and food industry.”

The University of Minnesota will have to wait for funding. On Aug. 18, Gov. Mark Dayton said he would not seek to call a special session. ❖

Probiotic research plays role in avian flu prevention

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer WILLMAR, Minn. — A change in antibiotic use in livestock and poultry is bringing cooperation among pharmaceutical companies, universities, feed manufacturers and livestock producers.

Timothy Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, the Johnson Food and Drug Administration’s Veterinary Feed Directive goes into effect. According to the FDA fact sheet, the VFD eliminates the use of medically important antibiotics used for production purposes, such as growth promotion and feed efficiency, that are administered in feed. These antibiotics can still be used for animal health, but only under the supervision of a veterinarian. Livestock producers will need a VFD to administer

medically important antibiotics in feed.

Now the livestock industry is buzzing with talk and research of the use of probiotics instead of antibiotics.

Probiotics already are a popular alternative for people.

According to the Mayo Clinic website, probiotics are microorganisms that are a type of “good” bacteria that offer protection from harmful bacteria. Probiotics may help aid the digestive system and prevent or reduce the severity of colds and flu.

Are probiotics the answer for livestock?

Timothy Johnson, from the department of veterinary and biomedical sciences at the University of Minnesota

St. Paul campus, spends two days each week at the new Mid-Central Research and Outreach Center on the MinnWest Technology campus in Willmar. In a July visit, Johnson discussed some of the ongoing research — particularly as it relates to avian flu and other issues with turkeys.

“Our goal is to identify alternative products that can do the same thing these various growth promoting products have been doing for many years — in essence, prevent disease and maintain health while also increasing feed efficiency,” said Johnson.

This takes time. Already over five years of research has identified some of the baseline bacteria turkeys have.

“We knew that growth promoting antibiotics shift the activity of these various bacteria,” Johnson explained.

“They kill some, but also promote the

growth of other bacteria which in turn help the bird to become healthier. What we’re trying to do is identify all those bacteria, isolate them, grow them and then use them as probiotics against the bird itself to promote the same effect as the antibiotics normally do.”

Johnson said so far they have identified and isolated about 3,000 different bacteria.

“We know not all will work in our efforts to generate new probiotics,” he said. “So our goal is narrowing down these 3,000 into a handful that we think are the best bet for promoting growth and health in the bird.”

But things move quickly in this new world of technology. “We used to be able to sequence maybe one bacterium in a day. Now we can generate millions See AVIAN FLU, pg. 15

flock safe from outside entry of the virus.”

Johnson compliments Minnesota turkey growers with their rapid adaption of strategies. “These are sharp people. They quickly figure things out on their own and a very receptive to information that we can also provide.”

So why no virus outbreak this spring? He reasons changes implemented to prevent spreading should a virus hit the ground from airborne birds could be a factor. Without a break this spring, he theorizes perhaps birds weren’t carrying the virus.

Yet the sampling of feces from wildlife continues. “The DNR has been sampling non-stop upstairs in this building,” Johnson said. “They’ve done over 8,000 samples of water taken from area turkey farms looking for the virus and found not one positive. The vet diagnostic lab at the University also considerably stepped up its efforts providing faster and better tests. That boils down to simply being ready to find that virus should it occur.”

However a pervasive uneasiness still exists within the turkey and poultry industry. Despite intense scrutiny, federal and academic scientists still cannot say for certain how poultry and turkey farms became infected.

Planning for epidemics, animal or human, is to a large extent based on what the disease did the last time. It is difficult to predict what a disease will do next. And with antibiotics without a veterinarian’s prescription soon to be history, the livestock and poultry industry stays concerned. ❖

avian flu research effort is that it is tied directly with extension outreach.

“It’s not just doing the applied research that helps the farmer and the industry,” Johnson said. “It’s also about training the next generation of scientists. It’s about reaching out to the communities experiencing an outbreak. So here at this center we are helping to establish courses in collaboration with Ridgewater Community College that can bring genomics and this cutting edge science out to rural Minnesota.

“A second objective at this center is outreach to area high school students so these new sciences can be implanted into their thinking. Future preparation of the next generation is always important — maybe even more so when we discuss animal health, the disappearance of antibiotics and the introduction of a new industry of probiotics for better livestock health and human health too,” said Johnson.

What caused the rather sudden onset and demise of avian flu in 2015 remains under research. Many factors were at play.

“It’s not clear what was the single biggest contributor,” Johnson stated, “But it has been shown there were multiple introductions from the environment – potentially via migratory birds. A concentration of turkey production in a given area presents the potential for airborne spreading of the virus is documented by University of Minnesota research. Also the complexity of vehicles and human traffic has developed strong biosecurity measures such as the Danish entry system which basically creates another layer of protection to keep the

ance and optimal disease resistance.”

Minnesota leads in turkey research.

“With the implementation of this research program here in Willmar under the direction of Dr. Cardona, the University of Minnesota’s Pomeroy Chair in Avian Health, I think this Willmar facility will be recognized as the center of turkey and poultry research,” he said.

Johnson noted that Iowa State University, because of Iowa being the number-one producer of layers for the egg industry, is also ramping up its efforts in layer research.

Biosecurity and other factors are influencing the impact of avian flu.

From June 2015 to July 2016, there has not been a single reported case of the disease. So is avian flu soon to be history?

“I’m not going to speculate, but we’ve seen big changes in biosecurity the past years,” Johnson replied. “Lots of new thinking on what people are doing to be more cautious about the spread of the virus — be that airborne or the movement of vehicles from feed suppliers to turkey farms and the trafficking of people.”

A highly coordinated response plan is in place for avian flu outbreaks.

“We are much better prepared should a new break emerge,” Johnson said. “We have an intense chain of actions if and when a laboratory confirms a bird is sick with H5N2. The state health department contacts the flock owner to get a list of symptoms; then state officials contact each individual worker at that turkey farm via daily text, e-mail or phone. Meanwhile, all birds on the farm are killed by farm employees or state and/or federal contract workers.”

Development The feed industry, flush with years of earnings from the antibiotic markets, are equally ambitious in their efforts to create new probiotic products. “This is their future,” noted Johnson.

He explained that university teams need the collaboration of industry to get potential new products into the development stage. The Willmar location is particularly advantageous for this joint effort because both Jennie-O Turkey and Willmar Poultry are headquartered there. Feed manufacturers such as Land-O-Lakes and Purina generously support research and development efforts in getting probiotics into their feed formulation.

“We’re working together,” said Johnson. “We have multiple partnerships and that greatly speeds our total efforts while also spreading out the financials for these costly efforts.”

Johnson credits the major feed manufacturers for quickly realizing these new efforts aren’t just to pad their bottom line dollar.

“Better health is the objective; but coming up with products and tools so producers can more easily figure out what’s going on and then treat accordingly is primary,” he said.

Avian flu Breeders have been developing stronger turkeys which do a better job of resisting disease. However, Johnson said there is a trade-off.

“You can make a turkey more disease-resistant; but sometimes there can be a detrimental effect in terms of growth or feed efficiency,” he said. “It’s a constant balancing game for the breeders between optimal perform-

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending Aug. 26.

CORN — Corn trended lower all week on ideal weather, improving condition ratings, decent crop tour results, higher world crop estimates, and a strong U.S. dollar. Weather forecasts look like we’ll have a great finish to the crop. The International Grains Council updated its world corn production outlook to a record 1.03 billion tons, which is up 13 million metric tons from their previous estimate. Corn conditions improved 1 percent in the week ending Aug. 26 to 75 percent good/excel- PHYLLIS NYSTROM lent, when we usually begin to CHS Hedging Inc. St. Paul see ratings drop as the crop matures. Basis levels were mostly flat to lower this week as growers make room for the new crop. For the week, December corn dropped 18.75 cents to $3.25 per bushel. The March contract dove 19 cents lower to $3.34.5 per bushel. The December/July corn carry widened a penny to 24 cents for the week.

Pro Farmer issued crop estimates this week after its Midwest crop tour wrapped up. They use the tour’s input, plus other data and factors, in determining yield and crop estimates. Pro Farmer pegged the U.S. average yield at 170.2 bushels per acre for a crop of 14.73 billion bushels. On the August report, the USDA used 175.1 bu./acre for a crop of 15.15 billion bushels.

The livestock markets continue to struggle to fight their way out of the constant bear markets in which both cattle and hogs are entrapped. Each rally over the past few months in both markets has been thwarted by disappointment and a continuation of lower prices.

The cattle market has been in a continuous bear trend for a year and the prospects for breaking this trend do not appear to be on the horizon at this time. The continual discount of the futures market indicates the bearish overall tone that has captured the market during the past several months. This has been the battle that has been waged during this entire downward spiral that has plagued the market over the past year. The lack of demand for beef products — not the tight supply of animals — has been the dominant feature that has been the drag on the market. Given the fact that competitive meat protein is still at low price levels, it would seem that it will still be a struggle for the cattle price to sustain any real strong lasting rally at this time.

On Aug. 19, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a Monthly Cattle on Feed report which indicated the following: on-feed Aug. 1, 102 percent; placements in July, 102 percent; and marketed in July, 99 percent. This was interpreted as slightly negative to the market. Thus, as the supply increases

There are four types of forage insurance plans available in Minnesota and Wisconsin to help farmers protect their grass or hay crops.

Let’s break down the different plans and how they can protect the forage on a producer’s farm.

Actual Production History: This forage plan is based upon a producer’s 10-year production history and covers stands for up to five years. Accurate records are a very important part of this forage plan.

A producer must record the production received from each cutting to establish a yield.

The APH plan does cover winterkill if the production drops below the guarantee. To calculate a loss, you can use this equation: Tons per acre guarantee minus tons per acre actually produced equals Tons per acre loss multiplied by established price equals

Midwest crop tour saw high soybean pod counts cent on average. Basis levels for the week were better on good export demand and marketers try to attract beans into the pipeline, despite the disappointing flat price to growers.

November soybeans plunged 37.25 cents lower on the week to close at $9.67.25 per bushel. The January contract wasn’t far behind, down 38 cents at $9.69.75 per bushel.

The Pro Farmer Midwest crop tour saw higher than average pod counts, but it’s hard to tell just by pod counts what they will yield. With corn, you see the ear, the kernels, and rows to help determine the yield. With beans, the number of beans per pod aren’t counted and it’s too early to know their size. However, based on what was observed and assuming normal conditions through September, they pegged the U.S. average soybean yield at 49.3 bu./acre for a crop of 4.09 billion bushels. The USDA in August used a yield of 48.9 bu./acre for a crop of 4.06 billion bushels.

Soybean weekly export sales were astounding at 75.5 million bushels, split between 4.2 million bushels for old crop and 71.3 million bushels for new crop. According to weekly export inspections for the week ending Aug. 26, inspections were 35.3 million bushels. Traders will be expecting an increase of 40 to 50 million bushels in old crop exports on the 2015-16 balance sheets since we are nearing the end of the crop year and shipments are higher than the USDA’s 1.88 billion

bushel forecast. China officials will be arriving in the United States in the coming week for their pilgrimage to sign the annual framed contracts.

This type of contract is for soybeans they intend to buy and not an actual purchase. Last year, the framed contract was for 13.8 mmt.

OUTLOOK: This week meal fell to its lowest level on the continuous chart since April and bean oil dropped significantly. Both added to the weakness in the soybean market. Support at the August report day low at $9.62.5 per bushel was taken out, leaving the August low of $9.43 per bushel as next support. Resistance is hit at this week’s high at $10.20 per bushel. The weather forecast is conducive to a big finish to the bean crop and could mean a higher yield potential. Demand needs to return on nearly a daily basis or the dollar needs to reverse lower for the bulls to get charged up.

Nystrom’s notes: Contract changes for the week ending Aug. 26: December Chicago wheat set a new contract low at $4.05 per bushel before closing 37.25 cents lower at $4.07.5 per bushel. Kansas City wheat fell 28 cents and Minneapolis dropped 34.5 cents lower for the week. October crude oil declined $1.47 to close at $47.64 per barrel, ULSD was 2.75 cents lower, RBOB was off a penny and natural gas rallied 29.5 cents. The U.S. dollar index as of mid-afternoon on Aug. 26 was up nearly a full point for the week. ❖

didn’t last longer than a blink. The dollar then pushed lower toward 94.000 support, which in turn helped cut losses in commodities and rallied energies into the black. It was only a matter of time before the market refocused and reacted like you would expect. The dollar rallied and commodity prices faded by the close.

OUTLOOK: December corn closed lower for five consecutive sessions as funds increased their net short position and fundamentals were negative.

We are precariously close to setting a new contract low in December corn and it’s not a question of if we do, it’s a question of when. The top of the corn market is defined at $3.44.25 per bushel. Close support in the December contract is the contract low of $3.22.5 per bushel, then $3.12 per bushel.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans rolled over this week as the Midwest crop tour found high pod counts and demand news was scarce. The November contract closed lower for four straight sessions after putting in the weekly high on Aug. 22. Weather in the Delta is delaying harvest and may be reducing production, but the crop tour’s outlook for a huge crop is helping to balance that loss. The impressive pod counts are turning doubters into believers that this crop could average over 48.9 bu./acre. Soybean conditions were unchanged in the week ending Aug. 26 at 72 percent good/excellent with 89 percent of the beans setting pods compared to 85 per-

Export inspections, or what actually gets shipped, in the week ending Aug. 26 were just over 49 million bushels.

While this is a good number, we need to average 56 million bushels per week to achieve the USDA’s 1.925 billion bushel export projection. Argentina’s corn has recently become competitive on the world market. Their harvest is 93 percent complete.

Weekly ethanol production was just shy of a new record at 1.028 million barrels per day. Seasonally, ethanol production should begin to see a decline as the driving season comes to an end on Labor Day. On an annualized basis from the beginning of the crop year, the corn grind rate equates to 5.22 billion bushels. This coincides with the latest USDA’s ethanol usage category estimate of 5.2 billion bushels.

It looks like Brazil will let the current tax exemption on ethanol expire at the end of the year. The result is expected to cut ethanol use in gasoline and increase gasoline imports. It could likely lower their ethanol exports and allow for higher U.S. ethanol exports.

In Federal Reserve Chair Yellen’s statement on Aug. 26, she suggested that we could see an interest rate increase sooner rather than later. The market initially reacted as you would expect with a higher dollar, but this

Pasture, Rangeland and Forage Insurance: This plan of forage insurance is available to cover a single peril: lack of rainfall. There is specific data collected on the amount of historic rainfall within a grid (12 by 12 miles) that will determine the rainfall index for that grid ID, the rainfall data is collected at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather stations and are not specific to each farm.

A producer must select at least two, two-month intervals where precipitation is important to their operation. A loss may occur when the final grid

index (rainfall occurring over that twomonth time) is less than the trigger index. The deadline for any changes, to sign up and to report acres for the PRF policy is Nov. 15.

Winterkill: This is a standalone forage policy that protects against a single peril — winterkill. Producers are able to take this plan of insurance with any of the other plans listed above.

Because this policy is offered as a private product, details are still being worked out for this plan of insurance for the 2017 crop year.

Additionally, forage seeding coverage is available to add to your spring policy. This is a good option to consider if you are concerned about the risks associated with new seeding.

If you wish to cover winter wheat in Minnesota a request for coverage may be made by March 15, 2017, and a

growing season inspection must be done in order to obtain insurance on winter wheat. Sales closing for spring wheat is also March 15, 2017.

Crop insurance should play an important role in any farm’s risk management plan because we can never be certain what Mother Nature or crop prices will bring during the crop year.

Storage report pegged U.S. butter stocks at 333.1 million pounds. This is up almost 5 million pounds or 2 percent from June, up 78.8 million pounds or 31 percent from July 2015, and the first time since 2004 that stocks were higher at the end of July than they were in June, according to FC Stone. Revisions added 2.1 million pounds to the June total.

American type cheese, at 769.98 million pounds, was up 13 million pounds or 2 percent from June and 71.95 million or 10 percent from a year ago. The June estimate was lowered 1.6 million pounds.

July’s total cheese inventory stood at 1.28 billion pounds. This is up 26 million pounds or 2 percent from June, and 11.5 million or 10 percent from July 2015. June’s total was revised lower by 1.3 million pounds.

The Cold Storage data sent shivers into the markets where cash block cheddar cheese plunged to $1.7375 per pound on Aug. 25. It inched back to $1.74 the next day, down 12.5 cents on the week, but 4 cents above a year ago. The barrels closed at $1.68, which is down 18.5 cents on the week and 8 cents above a year ago. On the week, 18 cars of block were traded at the CME and three of barrel.

■ Dairy Market News reports that Midwest cheese makers are “filling vats and running schedules as full as possible.” “After several weeks of decreases in milk intakes, some manufacturers feel the fall in production has begun to level off. A few contacts report being short on milk, but are able to find spot loads when needed. Demand is mixed. Some market participants feel sales slowed some this week following several weeks of active orders outside of contracts. Other manufacturers feel demand continues to grow ahead of the holidays.”

“Cheese curd sales continue to soar as the fair and carnival season continues. Inventories vary and widely depend on the variety of cheese. Cheddar and American cheese inventories are mostly long,” says Dairy Market News. “International inquiries remain light, and the market undertone is steady to firming.”

Producers should remain defensive in their attitude in the market and protect inventories as needed.

The hog market is currently attempting to turn higher as cash prices began to level out ever so slightly during the past few weeks. Demand for pork has remained fairly good which is promising given the fact that there seems to be ample supplies of animals at the current time. The U.S. dollar has fallen recently against most foreign currencies which is promising to the export market and should assist in

demand for pork in the foreign markets. Given the fact that the futures market is at deep discounts the current cash price, the likelihood of a firming futures market appears to be favorable. However, the cash side will still depend on the availability of animals which seem to be ample to meet packer demand at this time. This will likely close the large gap between cash and futures over the next few weeks.

Unless the supply of hogs begins to diminish or the demand for pork increases substantially in the shortterm, it is not very likely that a sustained rally is in the offing for the hog market. Producers should continue to remain current and protect their inventories as warranted. ❖

here are more than 20 sculptures on display on the sidewalks of the downtown area of Bemidji.

“My favorite is HumptyDumpty,” said a waitress at the Tutto Bene Italian restaurant. “He makes me smile everyday when I come to work.”

“My wife’s favorite is by the printing shop,” said James, a baker at TNT Tastery bakery. “It’s kind of an arbor over the entryway.

What’s your favorite?”

Locals and visitors can choose their favorite sculpture on Bemidji’s Sculpture Walk one day and have a new favorite the next day.

They can choose from a girl playing a violin or “Little Leo and the Magic Birdbath.”

There is “Noctua” — an attractive round concrete abstraction, as well as a dream catcher called “Journey Through the Sacred Hoop.” Then there’s a bronze called “Picking Tulips.” A shocking purple bench-like creation was made by opening up a steel propane tank.

And ... many more abstract and not so abstract creations.

But if you choose a favorite this year, be prepared to lose “your” sculpture next year. Since 1999, the Bemidji Sculpture Walk has been working with local and regional sculptors to turn the downtown area into an outdoor art museum. Each year they invite sculptors to submit samples of their work and each year 20 to 30 sculptors apply to have their work displayed on the Sculpture Walk. There is a small chance that your favorite sculpture from 2016 will still be in the 2017 collection. It will likely be replaced by some new creation, however.

You can, of course, buy your favorite sculpture.

“A few sculptures are sold every year,” Al Belleveau, president of the Sculpture Walk Committee said.

“This teenage girl is typical of what I see happening in public places every day. It doesn’t matter what age or gender, when people gather in groups they tend to isolate themselves and zone into their smartphones,” Nelson writes on the Sculpture Walk website. “One definition of an artist is to record the world around us. This sculpture does just that.”

But you don’t have to own the sculptures on the Bemidji Sculpture Walk to have them challenge you, cause you to smile with their playfulness, inspire you with their beauty and craftsmanship, and perhaps jar loose some long-forgotten but cherished memories. Those are some of the things art is intended to do for us isn’t it?
