Is farm ‘neighborliness’ a long-gone value of the past?

None ever had much money by today’s never-enough standards. But they had something money can never buy — the rarely-mentioned respect and the nevermentioned love of their neighbors.

Today that respect and love — that neighborliness

— seems to end at the property line or courthouse steps. For example, on June 14, voters in North Dakota rejected, by a resounding 3-1 margin, their See GUEBERT, pg. 5

It’s hard to think of summer without thinking of the many neighbors we shared the southern Illinois heat, humidity, and mosquitoes with on the dairy farm of my youth.

Back then, in the mid1960s, we’d often see neighbors across the table-flat Mississippi river bottoms as FARM & FOOD FILE they cultivated corn or soyBy Alan Guebert beans and we baled straw or raked hay.

One set of neighbors, the bachelor brothers of Woodrow, Elvin, and Tanny L., owned land on either side of our farm. So six days a week, one of the men would ka-push, ka-push past our house on their Johnny Popper A. If Elvin was at its wheel, he’d wave to my brothers and me like a long-gone uncle utterly delighted to meet his newly-discovered nephews.

Since we milked 100 Holsteins, we’d see many neighbors during their evening trips to the dairy barn to buy our 50-cents-a-gallon milk. The price never changed; the neighbors rarely did. Most arrived just in time to visit while we milked the last couple of cows.

Those visits leaned more towards local news than local gossip. Felix V. could be counted on to tell us if the morels were up. Young John O. (there was an Old John O.), who was the deckhand on the nearby Mississippi River ferry, always knew if the river was rising, falling or, as he liked to say, “on a stand.” Ivan M., who worked at a local grain elevator, offered the week’s price for wheat, corn, and soybeans.

Sometimes a neighbor came to the dairy barn to arrange an equipment or manpower swap. For example, my father often borrowed Gary K.’s three-point, two-row John Deere planter to plant the many rows our six-row Oliver planter, the world’s worst, had skipped due to its faulty engineering and our faulty attention.

In return, Dad would combine Gary’s red clover or loan him our baler on a June day when it wasn’t the dusty center of his sons’ sweaty universe.

No one on either side of those transactions ever talked money. We were neighbors and neighbors were neighborly.

Money did change hands however, when we bought food from each other. We always bought our butcher hogs from a neighbor — usually Elmer B. Also, every week we purchased four dozen eggs from Mrs. M. with the same dollar bill her son Ivan, the elevator man, had given us a couple of days earlier on his weekly, two-gallon milk run.

Two months ago, on a perfect spring day, I visited most of those old neighbors atop the nearby bluff during a slow meander through St. Leo’s Catholic Church Cemetery. I saw, for the first time in decades, Elvin’s hearty wave, Mrs. M.’s lipsticked smile, and Gary’s deeply creased grin.

Far below in the blue distance lay the lovely, fertile bottoms where they had spent their entire lives, often together, making a living and enjoying life.

Shortly after I returned to the office he asked if I knew where some Farm Service Agency papers were that he needed for one of his morning errands. I rounded them up, changed laundry loads and got started on my writing, and soon it was time to meet our daughter for lunch.

When I got home, I put supper in the oven and was gathering some thoughts for my writing assignment, when my husband said he was going to the bank and wondered what our immediate finances looked like. Of course I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t balanced the checkbook yet, so I put my writing aside and worked on that so he could go to the bank a more informed borrower.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been back at it a short time before our son came in asking if he could have a haircut before he was to leave the next day for an event.

By the end of the day, by the time their needs were met, the laundry was done and put away, supper was over and the kitchen was cleaned up; but before it was time to check the impending sheep and cow mothers before we went to bed, my family had everything they needed to keep themselves going.

But my writing was in only slightly better shape than it was when the day began. I made the valiant effort, but it fell short of success.

AgriGrowth supports GMO bill ST. PAUL, Minn. — Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-Kansas) and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) announced compromise legislation on biotech labeling on June 23. The Minnesota AgriGrowth Council supports the legislation, which would create a national standard for labeling food that contains gentically modified organisms.

AgriGrowth Executive Director Perry Aasness released the following statement: “We strongly support the GMO labeling legislation drafted by Chairman Roberts and Ranking Member Stabenow, because it will help avoid the economic costs and confusion that would result if we allowed a patchwork of state laws to go into effect.

“Biotechnology in agriculture has provided numerous benefits, including increased crop yields, decreased use of pesticides and it is absolutely safe for consumers. A national standard for labeling biotech food that will also prevent confusing and costly state-by-state GMO labeling requirements is

crucial for farmers, food producers and for consumers. We thank Chairman Roberts and Ranking Member Stabenow for their leadership on this issue, and we urge the Senate to pass the biotech labeling agreement as soon as possible.”

The Senate takes up the bill the week of June 27.

The bill needs 60 votes to pass the Senate followed

by House approval of the legislation. Last July, the House passed a bill that established a voluntary labeling system and banned states from making their own labeling laws. The national legislation is in response to a Vermont labeling law requiring labels on food containing genetically modified ingredients.

The Vermont law goes into effect July 1.

ND Farm Bureau ignores neighbors and farm in North Dakota calmly and democratically “settled” the “question” by a perfectly clear 75-to-25 percent margin.

In rejecting that outcome, though, the NDFB again proved what a growing segment of the American public now firmly believes: Farmers love to talk to consumers; they just don’t want to listen to ‘em.

A good neighbor would.

The weather finally cooperated enough on the Lee farm to start chopping hay. The Land spoke with Joan Lee on June 16 as she reported: “We had chopped what we wanted to for first crop hay.”

There were over 30 loads of hay that filled up half the silo. In addition, “We did market round bales,” she said. Lee may have to wet bale the remaining crop. Lee started cutting on June 5 and she said they still have a little they haven’t cut down.

The corn needs some warmer days to really get it going; the lack of heat has “hurt the germination a bit.” The oats “look really good.”

Lee observed a “definite line in the field from where Mark (Lee’s husband) hauled manure and where he didn’t.” The manure side, she said is a more vibrant green. The soybeans for the most part are doing “pretty well.” Meanwhile, the wheat is “coming up really well,” she said.

Lee will be busy the next few weeks. “Hopefully finishing up with hay crop,” she said. “Continuing cultivating the organic corn and bean crop.” The conventional wheat and beans will be sprayed.

The rain seems to be a constant on the Lee farm this spring and early summer. Lee voiced concern that the crops are going to show a little more stress with the moisture if the rain continues.

“The moisture is creating a little more of a challenge right now,” Lee said.

Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa June 24 Spraying, spraying and more spraying. While Kent Moser isn’t done with the sprayer, his focus has shifted as he’s “concentrating more on soybean spraying and finishing up corn.” The Land spoke with Moser on June 24 as he was viewing the crops with greater optimism than in the past few weeks.

The corn looks “overall, very well,” Moser reported. There was some strong wind and hail that went through the area a few weeks ago that “root logged the corn a little bit,” he said. Fortunately the corn was able to bounce back. After that: “Corn has really taken off,” he said. Soil testing that Moser has done has shown lower levels of nitrogen in the soil. The result: “Lots of interest in side dressing. With the rain that we had we may have lost more nitrogen than we thought,” he said. Moser plans to begin side dressing nitrogen in the corn. Next up, Moser expects to soon be “scouting fields for root worm issues that may pop up.”

The soybeans are “excellent,” he said. The bean “fields are staying fairly clean.”

Moser has seen no big issues yet. He has however, seen more of a range in bean growth due to the various planting dates.

“I’m optimistic in the progress that we’ve made,” Moser said.

The timely rains have allowed for “good root development.” This has resulted in the crops doing “a lot better.”

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON

June 15 The weather in Andy Pulk’s neck of the woods has been “more of the same.” That includes rain, just enough sun to start to dry out the field, then rain some more. The Land spoke with Pulk on June 15. He said he has been “spraying on and off between rain showers.” Corn and rye grass have been sprayed but Pulk has some soybeans and wheat left to finish.

Pulk has been spending some quality time in the sprayer including 175 acres of wheat on June 14. It wasn’t smooth sailing spraying the wheat; Pulk said he was “fighting some mud with the sprayer.” Though wheat overall “looks pretty darn good,” he noted.

The corn hasn’t yet hit its big growth spurt as it’s currently 6 to 10 inches high. Pulk will be either side dressing his corn with anhydrous or top dressing with urea. “If the weather cooperates we’ll try to do both,” he said. Pulk is happy to report that “We’re ahead of growing degree days for corn by quite a bit.” There’s a warming trend forecasted for the weekend, which would definitely help move the corn along. Warm weather is nice but Pulk is “praying for dry weather.” The field conditions are “definitely wetter than we would like to be.”

Overall, Pulk is “very pleased” with the crops this growing season. They look far better so far then the crops on the Pulk farm the last few years. All that is needed now is the sun to dry out the fields and really give these crops a boost.

John Nielsen, Albert Lea, Minn.

June 23 After a wet period including some bouts of hail, the Nielsen farm has been missing the recent heavy rains. So much in fact, that they could actually use a little moisture now. The Land spoke with John Nielsen on June 23 as he reported that the corn has taken off after the rain. Knee high by the fourth of July? Try shoulder high by June 23 in some of Nielsen’s fields.

“The corn is generally good to excellent,” he said. However, there are some yellow streaks. “I don’t know if it’s from too much rain or compaction problems,” Nielsen said. Side dressing of corn was completed on May 18.

Nielsen finished spraying his soybeans on May 21 and now they’re starting to really grow. “They look relatively good, even the ones that got nicked by hail,” he reported.

Now that spraying is complete: “We’re set here until the aphids come,” he said.

Nielsen expects that to happen in about six weeks.

Nielsen continues to work on projects on the farm including “preparing a site for new bins this week.” He is quick to point out that there’s “always a lot to do” on the farm.

While there’s always work to be done, a little fun is also necessary. Nielsen opened up his pool for the summer on June 22. The grandkids are enjoying the time in the water and Nielsen is enjoying the beautiful summer evenings, even more so without the annoyance of mosquitoes so far. “Not many mosquitoes here yet,” he said.

Crops are looking good; fantastic memories are being made with grandkids and almost no mosquitoes. Now that’s a great start to the summer.

Maybe it’s just me, but I could swear I smelled fresh country air while reading “Dear County Agent Guy.” Yep, this book reminded me of warm spring afternoons, when you’re driving on a dirt road and you stop to jaw a minute with a neighbor on a dusty tractor. Favorite restaurant foods you can make at home Cookbook Corner

By SARAH JOHNSON The Land Correspondent Author Margaret Guthrie notes, in her 1987 classic cookbook “Best Recipes of Minnesota Inns and Restaurants”, that “painters, sculptors, musicians and writers, by their very creativity, live on. What a chef creates is eaten up. No evidence is left of her or his genius, except an empty plate.”

And so began her quest to document sample recipes from some of the great dining establishments across Minnesota before they were lost forever.

From Wabasha’s Anderson House to Northfield’s Archer House, on towards Duluth’s Fitzger’s Inn and through Brainerd’s Kavanaugh’s Restaurant, Stillwater’s Lowell Inn and the Naniboujou Lodge in Grand Marais, Guthrie found her precious recipes.

Here are a few to savor for yourself.

■ Black pepper: the reason Columbus set sail for China and bumped into the Americas instead, where he ended up becoming a tyrant and dying an awful death. In this recipe, the black pepper plays a happier role, covering the steak with its spicy love and getting seared in deep.

Champagne Chicken Breasts Clyde’s on the St. Croix, Bayport 6 boneless chicken breasts (6-8 ounces each) 1 cup flour mixed with 2 tablespoons seasoning salt 1/2 cup melted butter 2 cups champagne (I used non-alcoholic) Lightly bread the chicken breasts in the seasoned flour. In a heavy skillet containing the melted butter, lightly brown the chicken breasts on each side. After browning, pour off any excess butter. Add the champagne and simmer the chicken breasts over low heat until tender and the champagne has been reduced to a light glaze.

■ Notice how wine and butter are common features in these restaurant recipes? That’s because those things are

the delicious “secret” ingredients at many a fine restaurant: tons of butter and booze. The next recipe however, is a bit more countrified with the addition of beer instead of wine.

Pork Medallions in Mushroom Beer Gravy The Palmer House, Sauk Centre 8 pork chops (1/2 inch thick, remove bone) Flour 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup chopped green onions 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1 cup beer (more if necessary to cover) Salt and pepper Minced parsley to garnish Dust chops in flour. Heat butter in large iron skillet until foaming. Add chops and brown sell on both sides.

Remove chops and set aside. Add onions and garlic to skillet and sauté two minutes. Add mushrooms and thyme and sauté and additional three minutes. Return chops to skillet, add beer and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer one hour. Transfer chops to serving platter; keep warm.

Skim fat from sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon sauce over chops and sprinkle with parsley.

“This is what put Wanda on the map,” Glotzbach said. “It has never been out of print since 1928 — the longest in-print picture book in the United States.

She printed it horizontally rather than vertically — spreading illustrations across two pages, which had never been done before.”

After her mother died in 1917, Gag’s siblings had joined her in Minneapolis. Some of them followed her to New York, and then to her home in Connecticut,

which she built after her success. Her lithographs, paintings, and books led to a comfortable life, which ended with her death at the age of 63 in 1946.

Wanda Gag House When all of the Gag children had moved from the New Ulm house, it became a boarding house for rural high school students. The owners added a porch to the front and made other changes.

“They covered up some windows. There were 27 windows — which were a lot of windows for the day — to make it more accommodating for the boarders,” Glotzbach said.

Open turret porches were enclosed, and in time finials were removed from the roof and it got different siding. For many years, the only indication it had been the home of a famous author was a little sign designating it as the Gag house. The sign was put up by University of Minnesota Women many years ago.

Today, that has all changed. By simply driving by, you would know it was no ordinary house. It took 10 years, $250,000, and thousands of volunteer hours to restore the house to its original condition.

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent NEW ULM, Minn. — It is difficult to know which is a more interesting story to tell, the one about children’s author Wanda Gag, or the one about the fanciful house in which she grew up that was designed by her father, Anton Gag. Since Ms. Gag (rhymes with fog) achieved her greatest success after she left Minnesota, we’ll concentrate on her childhood home in New Ulm, which has been lovingly restored.

While the artistic value of the house can be credited to her father, it is of historic interest because Wanda Gag grew up here, so first a bit of her story.

Wanda was the first of seven children born to Anton and Lissi Gag. When she was a year old, Anton designed a two-and-one-half story house that was built on what was then the edge of New Ulm. Anton was a painter and photographer. He and Lissi were Bohemians, who encouraged their children in all things related to music and the arts.

Gag was 15 when her father died in 1908.

“She immediately started writing stories, doing illustrations, and sending them to publications to make money,” said Sharon Glotzbach, president of the Wanda Gag House Association.

After high school, Gag taught country school for a year and then received an offer to attend art school in Minneapolis.

“New Ulm people were really unhappy that Wanda went off to art school,” Glotzbach said. “They thought she should have stayed in New Ulm and worked to help the family.”

Gag was however, working and earning money with her art and writing. She eventually went to New York to further her career. While there, in 1928, she wrote and illustrated “Millions of Cats”.

By CAROLYN VAN LOH The Land Correspondent BALATON, Minn. — The school in Balaton, a small Lyon County town, has closed its doors to students. The building still looks like a school from the outside. The entry and hallways are reminiscent of a school. The gymnasium is still a hub of activity. Athletic teams from nearby Tracy use the facility as an extra practice site, and it is an ideal place for a variety of community events, including weddings.

But the Ralco company’s tru Shrimp Systems has converted the metal, wood and welding classrooms into a laboratory where research is being conducted to bring shrimp farming to the area. The former school library has been transformed into a Ralco office suite, and the industry is outgrowing the space.

To get the full picture of a shrimp farm near Balaton, step into a time capsule and travel back to 1971. Bob Galbraith turned his garage into a warehouse to store animal feed which he sold under the Ralco trademark.

Fast forward to 2026. Galbraith’s grandson, Brian Knochenmus, is president of Ralco while his father, Jon, is president emeritus and adviser.

“Customer and consumer safety has always been and will remain at the forefront of decision making at Ralco,” said Brian Knochenmus.

In December that year, Ralco received the exclusive license in the United States for raising shrimp with the “tidal basin” system devised by Lawrence.

Many of the new industry’s terms are consumer friendly and ocean based. For example, the tank design is called the tidal basin and the farm is referred to as a harbor.

Before shrimp farming begins, research must be completed on three levels. First, animal health and water quality must be monitored. The next step is the feed laboratory. Some of the feed is purchased commercially,

but tru Shrimp Systems wants to develop the best food for shrimp.

The final step is researching the best conditions in which to raise the shrimp. When the baby shrimp arrive from a supplier in Texas or Florida as PL 12 (post-larvae 12 days old), they are placed in a shrimp nursery where they mature in about four months.

After the research lab in Balaton establishes results of a study, samples are sent to another lab for verification.

For someone who prefers shrimp breaded and deep fried, seeing a lively, jumping shrimp on a counter is memorable. Shrimp are, by nature, white.

But the lab shrimp have a blue tinge — a result of their chameleon nature.

Tru Shrimp Systems is on target to build its first farm in the Balaton area in 2017. The company’s goal is to have shrimp from conception to consumption.

Shrimp are small creatures which don’t need much space, right? Wrong!

Twenty acres of land will be needed for an environmentally-friendly operation. The 390,000 square-foot building will cover 6 acres. Production requires about 14 million gallons of water, so treatment plants are necessary to clean up the water before it can be reused.

There will be a central processing facility nearby.

“We will have our own frozen brand of shrimp,” said Gervais. “Tru Shrimp Systems is the engine to get us there.”

Shrimp grown under a controlled setting is consumer-friendly because of

traceability. Consumers will be able to track from which harbor, which tidal basin, or which reef the Minnesota shrimp originated. It brings a whole new meaning to “locally grown.”

Now back to the community of Balaton and the economic impact of the new farm product. In addition to the 15 Ralco tru Shrimp Systems employees who work in the former school, a shrimp harbor will employ about 50 workers, while the central processing plant could employ 100 more. Construction workers will be needed to get the buildings up and running.

Local farmers may be affected by a ripple effect because one-third of a shrimp’s feed is soybean meal. ❖

said that education is a primary purpose of the show.

“We’ll have Minnesota cattle feeders plus a few Iowa and South Dakota feeders bringing animals for this show. There isn’t another beef show like the Royale, so we’re proud of what we have,” said Graff.

“We get a goodly number of young folks, both 4-H and FFA, that get involved. And surprisingly, that spectator contest attracts both farm and non-farm people.”

“We want everyone to better understand the Minnesota beef industry,” said Graff. “Our Royale is one way to do just that. And when you combine it with carcass competition, then you definitely are doing some teaching to everyone.”

Graff Feedlots runs two separate feedlots. The home farm (a century farm) is permitted for 1,500 animal units. The feedlot where his daughter Hilary and husband Troy Paplow live has a county permit for 850 cattle.

Graff is a long-time feeder of Western cattle but he will source a few Kentucky and West Virginia feeders during the summer because Western cattle aren’t available at that time. Black Angus predominates in Graff feedlots simply because, “the Blacks have more market options.”

For this year’s Beef Royale, he trucked in nine animals for both pen-of-three competitions plus individuals in the steer and heifer on foot division which he hoped might qualify for individual carcass competition.

Lamberton Stockyards Darvin Voge, with brother Arlon Voge, is the owner of Lamberton Stockyards, which handles about 50,000 head of feeder cattle each season.

“We get feeder cattle from Minnesota and some cattle shipped in nationwide. But Western cattle, the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming are the primary sources,” said Voge. “We’ll deal with any breed,

This popular live show for market beef animals offers educational events, judging, youth and adult divisions. The Cottonwood Cattle Producers hosted the show at the Lamberton Stockyards on June 14.

The event began with a morning weigh-in of competition animals, followed by judging team practice in the afternoon and a spectator contest at 5 p.m.

The show wrapped up with viewing of cattle, awards and a ribeye steak supper. Prize money is awarded for the top three animals in steer and heifer divisions; pen-of-three; carcass.

Payouts in the steer and heifer divisions are $250 for first place, $150 for second and $75 for third in both categories. In the pen-of-three competition (steers and heifers combined) prize money is $500, $250 and $100 for first, second, and third. The carcass competition has payouts of $500, $250, and $100 (steers and heifers combined).

Dave Hansen is Lamberton Stockyard field representative and hands-on coordinator of the show. A great staff at the stockyard and dependable volunteers help sort the cattle and get the job done each year. This is the third year at Lamberton Stockyards.

“We’re a non-profit event so we have a $35 entry fee for an individual animal; $100 for pen-of-three,” said Hansen. “Thanks to some great sponsors, we can offer some good payouts to winning individuals and pens. Besides pride in winning, good prize money makes this an attractive show to cattlemen.”

But the advent of the mono barns also became a way for the younger guys to get into cattle feeding.

They couldn’t afford to buy farmland; but getting into the cattle business with a monoslope barn was working.

Most of these barns are second-generation cattlemen.”

Lamberton Stockyards features 15 pens with a handling capacity of 800 to 1,000 head. But most cattle sourced by the stockyards go direct to the farmer feeder. Some farmers want to see the feeders at the stockyards which then does the vaccinations and any other prep work as a customer convenience.

Lamberton Stockyards will also truck the cattle direct to the farmer’s yard.

Good service generates loyalty.

“It’s sort of humbling to see cattle feeders who have never bought a hoof anyplace else but right here,” said Voge.

Voge sees the cattle industry moving out of the Southwest into the upper Midwest where feed supplies are dependable and so are cattle feeders.

“The advent of the ethanol industry was a big boost for cattle feeders in this area because of all the new feed stocks,” he said. “The DDGs (dried distillers grains) cut feeding costs significantly.”

There are a number of new seed-applied fungicides that target sudden death syndrome and other specific pathogens. In the future, growers may have more options to manage problem fields.

“On the insecticide treatments, they’re really not much benefit for soybean aphids,” said Potter. “There are some other insects like bean leaf beetle where we’ve got some efficacy, also seed corn maggot, thrips and those sorts of pests encountered less frequently at economic levels.”

Can a tillage system minimize disease and pest issues in the soil profile?

“Relating to pathogens, it helps in two ways,” Potter said. “It will help dry that soil out in the spring, and it will bury some of that crop residue so the inoculum isn’t right there at the surface. You can manage a crop with reduced tillage; but you’re going to have to pay closer attention when selecting genetics and scouting and you still may have some issues.” ❖

But in the bulk fields that were planted later, we’ve got very little colonization at this point,” he said. “But as these winged aphids move out of these founding colonies, they don’t like real wet conditions. They have to process more sap. Plus, they don’t like hot, dry weather either. We just simply have to wait and see. They didn’t go extinct.”

Potter also shared his view on seed treatments for the 2016 growing season.

“We’re getting various reports this spring where we have seedling disease,” he said, “with and without seed treatment. So they aren’t effective on every fungus out there. The other issue is that these treatments don’t last season-long. So as the beans get older and we still have wet conditions, you can still have disease attack.

“Saturated soils after planting are prone to damping off by fungi like Pythium. Some fields have a history of seedling disease,” he said. Those are the best fields

Bruce Potter is University of Minnesota integrated pest management specialist at Southwest Research Bruce Potter and Outreach Center in Lamberton.

“I don’t yet know if we have more issues with nonGMO corn, but it’s more critical to pay attention to things like corn borer,” said Potter.

On June 14, Potter reported that these pesky moths were flying. At that time, farmers should have been scouting their conventional corn. He advised checking the whorl of the tallest non-BT-corn for little shot holes, a sign of a corn borer.

“Right now,” Potter said, “when moths are still in the whorl, rain showers significantly disrupt their agenda. The moths like warm, humid weather to fly.

We’ve had some good nights for moth activity. But as of June 14, we’ve trapped very few in the light trap here at Lamberton and that’s a good sign the population hasn’t built up yet.”

And what if corn borer activity ramps up?

“There’s still some time for that second in-star larvae to get into the stalk, so insecticide treatments can still control the borer,” Potter stated. “As long as these larvae are still feeding in the whorl, insecticides can do the job. But timing is critical.”

Potter pointed to a more crucial issue with crops across much of southwest Minnesota where wet soils have tremendously slowed root development of corn.

“With corn, it’s important to get that root system before tassel time,” Potter explained. “If it stays wet that long and then dries off, the corn crop is in trouble.

There just won’t be enough root structure to both produce a yield and support the corn plants very well.”

Potter also noted root rot symptoms in soybeans and a bit in corn too.

“Those wet feet we’ve had for a few weeks haven’t been good for corn especially,” he said. “Just a couple weeks of dry weather and warmer temps will pull us out of this condition.”

An issue with soybean aphids is still too early to call in this June visit with Potter. But he chuckled, “Since I’ve got a brain as small as an aphid I can

■ U.S. dairy farmers culled fewer cows in May than April, but more than a year ago, according to USDA’s latest Livestock Slaughter report. An estimated 214,000 head were slaughtered under federal inspection in the month. This is down 12,400 head from April, but 600 head or 0.3 percent more than April 2015. Culling in the first five months of 2016 totaled 1,225,700 head, which is down 9,500 from 2015.

More cows mean more milk, according to the latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook. The report states, “Recent data suggest a larger supply of milk cows for 2016 than forecast last month. Accordingly, the milk cow forecast has been increased to 9.325 million head, which is 5,000 more than forecast last month. The milk per cow forecast was unchanged.

With milk cow numbers higher than expected, the forecast for milk production for the year has been increased from 212.4 to 212.6 billion pounds.”

Looking to 2017, the Outlook states, “With a more gradual decline in cow numbers expected for 2017, the milk production forecast for 2017 is increased from 215.2 billion pounds to 215.3 billion pounds.

However, the impact of higher expected feed prices on producer margins during 2016 is expected to temper the increase in milk production.”

■ Cash butter and cheese prices weakened some the fourth week of June Dairy Month as traders absorbed the May Milk Production report, anticipated the June 24 May Cold Storage data, and contemplated fallout from the Brexit vote.

Block cheddar closed June 24 at $1.5125 per pound, down a quarter-cent on the week and 12.75 cents below a year ago. Barrel cheddar finished at $1.5350, which is down a penny on the week and 9 cents below a year ago. Only two cars of block exchanged hands on the week at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and none of barrel.

Cheese production in the Midwest has not wavered with the rising temperatures seen across the central region, according to Dairy Market News. Spot loads of milk are reportedly harder to come by, but milk intakes remain high. Some manufacturers are choosing to slow production in an effort to manage inventory. Stocks in the central region remain long, according to Dairy Market News, but strong sales have aided efforts to relieve inventory pressures.

Midwest cheese sales were reportedly increasing this week. Specific varieties, including mozzarella and provolone, are moving well into both food service and retail outlets.

Some participants feel buyers are building stocks as they anticipate prices to continue to climb on the CME. There is light international interest in U.S. cheese, Dairy Market News warns, and “the market undertone is mixed.”

With milk generally readily available, Dairy Market News says many western cheese makers report active cheese production. There are however, some areas in the West which are beginning to see a slight downturn in output as milk intakes slow seasonally.

Dairy margins improving, but remain negative $2.3450 per pound, down 2.25 cents on the week but 43 cents above a year ago, with 13 cars finding new homes on the week.

“Stable prices have contributed to growing year-over-year commercial disappearance of butter,” according to the Daily Dairy Report’s Mary Ledman. Writing in the June 17 Milk Producers Council newsletter, Ledman says, “In 2014, domestic butter demand increased 1.2 percent to 1.734 billion pounds, followed by a 3 percent gain in 2015. Through April 2016, domestic butter demand is up 7.8 percent, or 41 million pounds.”

“Fortunately,” says Ledman, “Butter production and stocks are also higher.

Through April 2016, U.S. butter production of 703 million pounds was 6 percent, or 40 million pounds, above last year’s level. Month-ending April butter stocks of 298 million pounds were up nearly 66 million pounds from

last year and the second highest April butter stock level posted during the past decade.”

Interestingly, Bloomberg News reported this week that it took McDonalds six months to switch from margarine to butter in its Egg McMuffins.

Dairy Market News reports that Central butter manufacturers vary in production schedules, cream is tightening, and spot loads are harder to come by.

Producers unwilling to pay premiums for cream are cutting back production.

Demand for bulk butter is high, but contacts report obstacles trying to find fresh bulk butter on the spot market.

Sales of print butter into retail and food service outlets are steady; though international interest is light.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk hit 90.25 cents per pound June 22, the highest price since October 2015. But on June 24, the price closed at 90 cents per pound, which is up 5.75 cents on the week and 5.75 cents above a year ago. On the week, 25 cars were sold at the CME, 14 on June 24 alone.

Dairy margins improved significantly since the end of May in nearby periods. A strong rally in milk more than offset the impact of higher feed costs, while deferred periods in 2017 held steady over the first half of June.

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending June 24.

CORN — Last week, December corn hovered around the $4.40 area looking at hot and dry forecasts. This week, we saw a sharp reversal on a changing pattern in the weather. The forecasts not only took out the heat but ushered in a wide area of below-normal temperatures. Across much of the corn belt, there are increased precipitation chances and the driest areas in southwest Iowa and northern Missouri are scheduled to pick up some rain in the short-range JOE LARDY forecasts. The corn market was CHS Hedging Inc. St. Paul down every single day this week and ended up losing 53.25 cents in the July contract.

Corn inspections were very good again this week, posting the fourth-highest level of the marketing year at 1.2 million tons. Twelve of the past 13 weeks have seen inspections top 1 million tons. Old crop export sales are starting to transition to new crop as we have 10 weeks left in the marketing year. Export sales continue to be very strong with the June 23 combined number totaling 1.42 million tons. Weekly ethanol data was a very bearish input for the corn market this week.

After touching an all-time record high production level last week at 1.013 million barrels per day, production had the second-largest week decline ever (51,000 barrels). This pattern is exactly what we saw in November 2015 when we touched the thenrecord high production at 1.008 million barrels and

Volatility and the livestock markets seem to go hand in hand these days and the outlook remains pretty much the same. This volatility remains a struggle between supply and demand which is likely to continue for the near term. This could continue to bring big swings from week to week in livestock prices.

The cattle market closed the week ending June 24 at the lowest level in many months. The futures lead option is at the lowest level since September 2011 and cash prices are lowest level since December 2015. The major factor affecting these lower prices appears to be a weakening JOE TEALE demand for beef which has deteriBroker orated over the past few years. Great Plains Commodity The competition for meat protein Afton, Minn. has been about value which has favored the poultry and pork sector of the market because of price per pound.

On June 24, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the Monthly Cattle on Feed Report which indicated that the number of cattle on feed was still expanding. The USDA also released the Monthly Cold Storage Report which showed a decrease in the amount of beef in storage from the previous month.

Historically, this report shows the lowest amount of beef in storage during the summer months and then begins to expand again in to the fall. Therefore, one conclusion would be with increasing supplies and weak demand, the overall direction in prices for the long term would be lower. This does not preclude the fact that prices may not rise due to changes from time to time in either short-term supplies or short-

Markets grind lower; Brexit lends bearish tone growing conditions to the Midwest.

The crop condition scores for soybeans are record high. The good/excellent rating this week was at 73 percent which is 7.5 percent better than the five-year average. Conditions are expected to hold steady again next week.

Export inspections continue to be very low. This shouldn’t be a big surprise as it is the gut slot of shipments for South America. Our inspections should pick up again in September. Export sales have picked up a little bit. Concerns over production levels in South America have benefitted U.S. business. Total commitments are way above the USDA’s current export figure. Total commitments are at 1.834 billion bushels and the USDA has exports at 1.76 billion. So I think there will be a big revision to exports in the July World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates report. The Commitment of Traders report showed that speculators finally started to do some selling as they approached a nearrecord spec long position. This week specs sold 21,000 contracts and the net long position now stands at 194,000 contracts.

OUTLOOK: Uncertainty from the Brexit vote

looks to keep a bearish tone on the markets. Next week we will see the June plantings report and that will be a key driver for prices for the next month.

The range of estimates for soybean acreage ranges between 82.1 and 85.7 million. The average is 83.8 which is still 1.6 million acres more than the USDA’s current figure of 82.2 million. With a much less threatening weather outlook, the bulls will need to find something in the USDA to rally prices.

The 10 and 20-day moving averages had been providing good support levels. But since they have both been pierced, the next key resistance level could come at the 50-day average at $10.60 in the November beans.

Additional comments: Contract changes for week ending June 24: December wheat lost 28.25 cents on the week. Crude oil was down only 92 cents for the week, but early gains were erased with the Brexit result dropping crude 5 percent on June 24. The dollar index was up massively on June 24 as it started the day at 93.5 and closed at 95.527.

In the example of making a marketing decision, the individual may have identified goals such as timing based upon cash flow needs. However, the unknowns related to marketing are complex and the apprehension may cause the individual to become stuck and avoid making any decision. Determine what information is needed in order to make the decision. Grain producers will need to know their cost of production. They need to understand their debt structure in order to manage cash flow. They need to know funds needed for personal living and factor that into the overall cash flow.

When making long-range planning decisions such as business transition, there is a laundry list of information needed in order to move forward. Information will come from multiple resources including professional advisors for financial, tax, legal, and insurance considerations. Include the lender and others to gather information needed for the cascading decisions that surround the primary decision to begin a business transition plan.

Identify who needs to be informed or included in the decision process: The decisions that impact others takes time and energy. The communication takes extra efforts and for those who are reluctant communicators, the apprehension may prevent them from taking action. Begin the decision-making process by identifying who is impacted by the decision. Ascertain the level of communication which is needed with each of the individuals impacted. Determine if they will be informed of the decision or if they need to be a part of the decisionmaking process. For those who will need to be informed of the decision, outline when and how they get their information. For those who need to be

included in the decision, get them involved early-on so all who are involved can get aligned on the goals and objectives.

Avoid second-guessing your decisions: The decision maker will often reflect on whether they are making the right decision. At the onset, when the decision criteria are being considered and identified, be sure to address the “what if’s” of the decision. Consider the question, “what is the worst that can happen?” as a part of the decision-making process. In some situations, a flexible plan can help with the second-guessing aspect of the decisionmaking process. Building flexibility into a decision allows plans to be adjusted periodically if needed.

However, not all decisions can be flexible. In those situations, if the decision maker believes the decision did not produce the results they wanted, view it as a good learning opportunity. Ask questions, such as: what could be done differently next time; or what additional information would have been beneficial? Compare the results to the decision criteria.

Being OK with your decision and not second-guessing is an important factor in preparing to tackle the next challenging decision.

Get started: If you are contemplating a decision, take the steps necessary to generate optimal results. Identify the goals you are trying to accomplish, involve and inform the appropriate people, consider the “what if” scenarios, and take action.

Define the decision criteria (goal): Whether it is marketing decisions, strategic decisions, or longrange planning decisions, producers should begin by identifying their decision criteria. In other words, determine what factors need to go into the decisions.

The criteria help keep the decision makers focused on what they are trying to accomplish through this decision. For example, marketing decision criteria may be cash flow driven to provide funds at critical points of time.

Cascading decisions: There are times when a primary decision will have multiple cascading or peripheral decisions. The cascading decisions may cause an individual to feel overwhelmed and simply avoid making decisions. Long-range planning decisions such as a business transition is an example of a decision which has cascading decisions. There will be decisions around economics, tax impacts, legal documentation, governance, and timeframe for example, that will be made while considering the primary decision to begin business transition.

Determining what is needed in order to make the decision: Making the day-to-day decisions comes naturally because producers typically have the information they need to make that decision. For example, deciding which field to plant in the spring is determined by soil, weather and other conditions familiar to the producer. The decisions which take more energy, often have unknowns which cause

OUTLOOK: The Brexit vote, where the UK is leaving the EU, put widespread pressure across all commodity markets on June 24. Since this is an unprecedented event, it is hard to know how long of an effect it will have on world markets. I think the grain markets will adjust quickly and turn its attention to the upcoming planting report on June 30.

Corn acreage has a range from 92 million to 94.005 million. I believe that the number is on the low end of that range as many producers made a switch to soybeans. The price direction looks to be heavily influenced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture numbers as the weather appears to be moderating a touch.

SOYBEANS — The soybean market was on a slow grind lower this week, closing down four out of the five days. The July contract lost 56.5 cents to settle at $11.03. The Brexit vote results really pushed all commodities lower on June 24 and it’s hard to tell how long the hangover will last. The changing weather forecasts are bringing some pretty good

National Milk supports Senate GMO legislation MIELKE, from pg. 17 the fact that even recent strength in milk prices leaves them below breakeven.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Milk prices have moved sharply higher following a jump in both spot cheddar and butter prices at the CME as demand is strong for dairy products,â&#x20AC;? the Margin Watch states. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Recent hot weather across the U.S. Midwest and Northeast is also impacting cow comfort and seasonally reducing milk production which likewise is offering support to the market.â&#x20AC;?

University of Wisconsinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mark Stephenson and Bob Cropp believe that milk prices have hit the bottom and are on the way back up. But they warn, â&#x20AC;&#x153;there are inventories to work down that may make the recovery slower than the futures markets are currently thinking.â&#x20AC;? â&#x2013; The USDA announced the July Federal order Class I base milk price at $13.70 per hundredweight. This is up 56 cents from June, but $2.83 below July 2015 and the lowest July Class I since 2009. It equates to about $1.18 per gallon, which is up from $1.13 last month. The seven month Class I average stands at $13.96, which is down from $16.34 at this time a year ago and $23.02 in 2014. â&#x2013; In politics, the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Pat Roberts

(R-Kan.) and its Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) reached agreement this week on GMO legislation to deal with genetically modified ingredients in food. This comes after months of negotiations by the two senators.

The Senate is expected to take up the bill the week of June 27. It will take 60 votes to bring it to the Senate floor, according to Bob Gray, editor of the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newsletter. Gray adds that the House is out of session and will not be back until July 5. Until the federal legislation is passed, Vermont's state labeling law will be the â&#x20AC;&#x153;de facto national standard.â&#x20AC;?

The bill pre-empts all state GMO labeling laws at the time of enactment.

Consumers can determine if a food product contains genetically engineered ingredients by accessing an electronic code on the food package or by following the instructions on a symbol contained on a food package. Meat products produced from bio tech feed are not subject to public disclosure, says Gray.

National Milk praised the bill as â&#x20AC;&#x153;sound and workableâ&#x20AC;? in a June 23 press release.

From a historical standpoint, this time of year seasonally finds a top in the hog market. It would appear this once again might be a case that a top in prices is not too far off. Despite the past several months that has seen a very nice rally in prices due to very good demand for pork, the hog market is approaching price levels of past resistance.

One factor which might greatly influence the market was the release of the USDA Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report on June 24. The report estimates over-

all hog numbers have increased more than the trade had anticipated. This, coupled with the USDA Cold Storage report, (which indicated a slight reduction in pork supplies from previous reports) would still indicate the supplies are more than adequate to meet the current demand for pork. Because the U.S. dollar has recently made a rebound in value against most other currencies, the export market of pork may suffer some from this advance.

Producers should take a cautious approach toward the hog market at this time as the futures market has quickly moved from a premium to a discount to the current hog index. This could be a signal the hog market prices are getting tired and ready for a setback from current levels. â?&#x2013;

Old-fashioned Fourth C

elebrating our country’s independence on the Fourth of July is nothing new in Minnesota. But the folks in North Morristown have been doing it longer than anyone else. This year, the small band of volunteers will host the 124th annual July Fourth Celebration.

Tucked away in the rolling pastures and fields of Rice County, North Morristown is a church, a school and a couple of houses. The church and school have quite a history of their own.

Trinity Lutheran Church began conducting services in a log structure in the 1860s. A wood-frame church was built at the current site in 1888 and the school was erected 10 years later. Lightning struck the church steeple in March of 1938 and the structure burned to the ground. While the new (and current) church was being built, services took place in the school.

“There was a lot of discussion about building the new church,” said Carl Krueger whose farm place is next door to the church. “Some wanted the new church to be just like the old one. But it was decided the new church would be a no-steeple church so it wouldn’t get struck again.”

Trinity School is still operating today with 11 kindergarten through eighth-grade students. A library was built in 1974, connecting the church and the school.

Across the road from Trinity is the grounds for the Fourth of July celebration. A handful of buildings and a small stage are surrounded by mature shade trees and lush grass. On July 4 this pastoral setting will be filled with literally thousands of revelers.

Many of the 160 Trinity parishioners join together in producing the celebration along with neighbors, friends and folks who just want to help.

The day kicks off with a Firecracker 5k run/walk and the parade gets underway at 10 a.m. Following the parade is a patriotic program. This year’s program salutes the Korean War veterans.

Throughout the day there is music, food, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments, bingo and children’s rides.

There will be a silent auction and buttons for sale. All the money raised during the day is used to help fund the Trinity school. Fireworks conclude the celebration at 10 p.m.
