worked his way down. He happily joined the Philadelphia-based magazine only to discover he hated city life, its long commutes, and what he called 9-to-5 “wage-slavocracy.” “My anger,” he wrote in his 1998 memoir, You Can Go Home Again, “kept me writing. I would write my way back to open country. But I didn’t know if I could do that. How did a person know if he was writing something good?” he wondered. What he did know troubled him. “Poor writers with families to feed did not write for themselves, nor for readers, nor for the ages. We wrote for editors.” That meant he had to do stories editors liked and he might hate in order to do stories he liked and his editors might hate. Those rare chances however, changed him and changed ag journalism. One such story centered on Pennsylvania’s family of painters, the Wyeths, who lived on a farm and believed you “had to know a place deeply in order to draw art from it.” Gene came to long for that place — that “home.” Another story was inspired by a 1971 book of poetry titled “Farming: A Hand Book,” by a Kentucky See GUEBERT, Pg. 7A

have been blessed.” The Land featured Happy Times Resort in May, 2012. Rodney recalled his dad (Gordon) argued a bit about that 5-acre field being turned into a pond. Corn was about $3.50 ten years ago. Gordon told Rodney those 5 acres would produce about 750 bushels of corn, about $2,500 value. Rodney replied, “Dad, We sold $3,500 worth of pizza and beverages out here last weekend!” Sure, lots of expense in building a farm pond into a resort. But even weather isn’t a hazard for Happy Times folks. When wet weather prevails they chat inside their campers. During sunny weather the water beckons. I’m wrapping up with this story about a young man who was stopped for a traffic violation. The officer who made the arrest recognized the odor in the violator’s car. The young man was convicted of marijuana possession (an automatic felony) and received a suspended sentence from an easy-going judge. Maybe you think that’s a pretty light sentence and he didn’t really lose much. Think twice young people. All he lost was the right to vote, to own a gun and the right to run for public office! My congratulations to all you recent graduates. But do indeed treasure your treasures. You will be voting for president this November. GUEBERT, from pg. 4A writer named Wendell Berry “who had gone back home from the glitter of New York to make his solitary way.” Again, home. Another Farm Journal story marked Gene’s break with convention. It was “The Last Farmer,” a 1975 satire that outlined the fictional career of farmer Marvin Grabacre as he took the “get big or get out” philosophy of 1970s agriculture to its perfectly absurd conclusion: he farmed all of the United States by 2051. Shortly thereafter, an unexpected royalty check became the down pay-

ment on the small-acre, Logsdon farm near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Gene and Carol went home, finally, and there, now, he will forever stay. His books, stories and unshakeable belief in “home” will live forever, too. Because our need to belong, our drive for a place in nature, is equally eternal. As such, Gene Logsdon will be better known a century from now than any corporate folly invented by man. The Farm and Food File is published weekly through the United States and Canada. less than 25 percent! If these farms are using electric heating during the winter, hopefully their co-op provider can save their day. The 30 percent federal tax credit for new installations is paid for by whom? (We taxpayers choosing not to do solar.) Hopefully these solar people agree that a net metering charge is necessary to maintain the grid (lines, poles, substations) to accept the excess power they wish to sell back to the grid. Their energy provider has to, within microseconds, adjust to the ebb and flow of solar generation or all of their customers will experience power surges or brownout issues. Most solar customers are not told their actual “break-even” time will be years later because overall generation is lower than expected. Before investing the big bucks, check with threeyear old solar farms for payback information. Don Buck Zumbrota, Minn.

7 A THE LAND, JUNE 17, 2016

To the Editor: Previous issues of The Land featured a four-page cover advertisement urging to “Go Solar.” This campaign is designed to have rural residents build solar panels on their farms. They list four examples of advantages over the electric utilities supplying your power: rate increases, pollution, hidden fees and no control. Because of recent energy conservation practices, rate increases have been very minimal. Pollution (Go Green — Save The Planet) is yet to be proven. Was there any pollution caused by solar panel manufacturing? What are these “hidden fees”? I have never had an issue with hidden electric fees! As far as “no control”, rural electric co-ops are member-owned and we members have “a say” in policies, etc. So if solar is the best approach, are there any negatives? In winter with short, cloudy days, solar panels produce less than 5 percent of their stated kilowatt performance. Even on perfect, longer, sunny days, generation is

Joan Lee, McIntosh, Minn. June 5

Back from her European holiday, Joan Lee hasn’t had much time to rest and reflect. The Land spoke with Lee on June 5 as she was happy to report that her European trip was a success. “It was wonderful.” Her time in Berlin and Munich was her favorite with “all the history that was there.” Lee got back to Minnesota on May 27 and was a speaker at the McIntosh Memorial Day program on May 30. She has also been busy driving to Princeton to spend time with her Mother since then. As for what’s been going on in the field, “We did get some rain.” Over 2-and-a-half inches fell. “It can hold off for a while now,” she said. Though the “soil was dry enough that it did absorb the rain” but “some of the lower places are pretty wet.” The rain put haying on hold, though Lee’s husband Mark was optimistic that he would cut later on June 5. “Mark has been cultivating the corn already,” she said. Lee is hopeful that in the next couple of weeks that the soybeans will be high enough to start cultivating them as well. The start of the growing season has brought optimism, “I think it’s a good year again.” Though Lee said she knows that “It’s a long ways out until harvest.” Kent Moser, Rock Rapids, Iowa June 10 Kent Moser has been spending some quality time in the sprayer. The Land spoke with Moser on June 10 as he reported that he’s “been busy spraying.” That spraying was momentarily interrupted on June 3. “We got a nice three-fourths to one inch rain,” he said. The moisture was a welcome sight: “The rain was nice to loosen the ground up.” There has been no rain since then. Moser is “looking forward to Monday and Tuesday as there’s a good chance of rain.” Some of the corn fields “are showing a little unevenness.” “Everyone is concentrating on getting corn sprayed,” he said. The soybeans are “looking good.” They’re anywhere from V2 to V3 stage. At the Moser farm: “Most of our beans came up real nice.” The concern now is that with all this “hot humid, heat stress weather” some fields “will start showing some stress.” Moser is “looking forward to moving into bean spraying.” The extended weather outlook calls for above normal temperatures and the precipitation outlook is “looking dry.” “It’s going to take rain to keep stuff going,” Moser said. At this point in the growing season Moser predicts: “We aren’t going to have a record breaking year.” Instead it looks to be “on par for an average year.”

FOLLOWING THE 2016 GROWING SEASON By KRISTIN KVENO The Land Correspondent

Andy Pulk, Roseau, Minn. June 2 Planting is complete on the Pulk Farm. The Land spoke with Andy Pulk on June 2 as he reported, “Everything that we wanted to get accomplished we got done.” Pulk finished planting soybeans on May 25. Ever since then “we’ve had rain on and off.” That’s between 2-and-ahalf to 3-and-a-quarter inches of rain around the farm. The crops are doing “for the most part really good.” Though with all the rain, the rye grass is looking “fair.” The weeds are loving the moisture. “We really need to get some herbicide on it,” Pulk said. The crops “need five or six days of sunshine.” Unfortunately, scattered showers are forecasted. The corn is “all up” with “excellent emergence.” Pulk is going to get it side dressed in the next two weeks. The soybeans are “all basically poking through.” The wheat “looks beautiful.” However, Pulk will need to do a little re-seeding due to few skips with the planter. The beginning of growing season this year is “definitely the best start in three years across the board.” With temperatures in the 70s to low 80s, it has sped up emergence in the crops. Corn and beans came out of the ground in eight to nine days. Pulk’s focus will be on spraying and fertilizing in the next few weeks. As well as “start working on harvest equipment.” It’s never too early to plan for a bountiful harvest.

John Nielsen, Albert Lea, Minn. June 10

John Nielsen’s crops received quite a bit of rain in the last 48 hours, around 2-and-a-half inches. Just three or four miles east of the Nielsen farm, it was hail, not rain that was the concern. The Land spoke with Nielsen on June 10 as he reported: “The heavy stuff went down I-90 to the east.” The hail meant replanting for some of Nielsen’s seed customers. Nielsen’s “corn got beat up but will come back.” After the rain, the corn really took off in growth. However, there are some of Nielsen’s fields that are still showing the effect from the frost that hit last month; there’s “a little bit of unevenness,” he said. Nielsen said he is “sick of talking about frost.” Those cold temperatures of last month seem like a distant memory as the forecast calls for continued heat and humidity which in turn will help the “corn take off now.” The soybeans “look all right.” All this “moisture will really perk them up.” The rain caused “ponding for maybe 24 hours, we’ll see how that turns out.” The warm temperatures look to be here to stay, Nielsen expects the crops to continue to improve in this weather. “Summer is here now,” said Nielsen. “I think by next week it will be a different story.”

South-facing barn roof was ideal for solar array BARN, from pg. 9A “We’ve been using it every day since,” said Maarten. Every night, they pull in their dump truck and trailer with the skid loader right on it. The truck and equipment thaw out in the heated shop. “Everything starts easy when it’s warm,” said Doug. Digging graves displaces dirt and clay. So after thawing in the shop, it’s easier to dump the clay into their “holy dirt pile.” A work bench runs along the length of one wall. They have more tools yet to bring in — 5gallon pails filled with tools — but they are taking their time. Maarten doesn’t like clutter while Doug showed off a hand-forged hay bale hook. Before the Fullers could build their shop, they had to save the old barn. They put on new steel siding, a new roof, and jacked up the barn — up to 18 inches in one corner. They also put in new footings. The guy that did the work told Doug: It’s not going to be

perfectly straight, but it will be close. “When we put the shop on the barn, you can’t believe how close to straight that wall was,” said Doug. Before that, the north wall of the barn looked like an ocean wave, noted Maarten. Doug fixed up an old cupola that was crunched in and riddled with bullet holes. Prior to excavating for the last 38 years, Doug and his brother had a body shop together. The cupola stands proudly atop the barn. “For us farm kids, the barn and hay mow was the greatest place to play as a kid,” said Doug. Geothermal The Fullers invested in a Hydronic geothermal heat pump made by TTHERM GEO, a Minnesota company. The heat pump uses no fossil fuels, taking advantage of the earth’s ability to store heat. “The temperature should be about 54 degrees from the ground,” said Doug. According to the company’s website, geothermal heat pumps tap into the

earth’s constant ground temperature through pipes bored into the ground. The heat is concentrated through the refrigeration process and released into the building. In the summer, the process is reversed and heat is removed from the building and put back into the earth. That means the shop will be cool in the summer. The pump is designed for use with a radiant (in-floor) system like the Fullers have. TTHERM GEO claims energy efficiency savings of 300 to 500 percent. “It’s a very consistent heat,” said Maarten. “We come inside after being outside and it feels good.” While it’s a big upfront cost, they estimate that the system should pay for itself in seven to 10 years. Solar array In May, they installed a 14 kilowatt solar array on the barn’s south-facing roof; a southern exposure is critical. Again payback is estimated at seven to 10 years. “It’s going to be able to power our

whole farm,” said Maarten. “We want to make it so we’re completely sustainable.” The solar array was endorsed by Fritz Ebinger, rural energy development program manager of Clean Energy Resource Teams. Ebinger conducted an on-site energy assessment on the farm in November 2015. Ebinger looked at shade readings, roof angle and structure. Ebinger noted the barn’s new steel roof, new wiring and an electrical upgrade that had the capacity to host a solar array. “They had a great site,” said Ebinger. Coincidentally, they had the right amount of space for their energy needs of 14 kW, explained Ebinger. Farm operations like the Fullers usually have a 10 to 15 kW window. “We encourage people to size to load. That’s a good electrical practice,” said Ebinger. “You want to be a good neighbor to fellow cooperative patrons.” Ebinger recommends communicating with your rural electric co-op and See BARN, pg. 11A

wind turbines can’t.” For those who may not be physicists, the venturi effect was discovered more than 200 years ago and the concept has been utilized on automobile carburetors, aircraft instrumentation, and even gas grills for years. Venturi is essentially creating additional pressure by restricting flow. “When you put your finger over the end of a garden hose to make it spray, you’re creating a venturi effect,” Scholz explained. “Instead of liquid, the INVELOX system uses air.” Outside SheerWind’s office building is the INVELOX demo unit which technicians use to evaluate and further develop the system. While the unit is hard to miss, it is a fraction of the size of a regular wind turbine. Plus, it is located near the building and a stand of mature trees and functions perfectly. “We purposely placed our Chaska testing unit close to trees and a water tower,” Scholz said. “We wanted to see if we could collect wind in those condi-

tions. We did trim some branches but the good news is that it still works. That means our towers can definitely be in urban areas or close to the electricity consumer.” One of those consumers is the Palmyra Atoll wildlife refuge. The national wildlife refuge is located about halfway between Hawaii and American Samoa and is owned by The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Along with providing the refuge with electrical power, vehicles and boats at the refuge operate on batteries charged by the system. “With a goal to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, SheerWind's INVELOX was the only viable solution for the multiple restrictions including height, wind speeds, and of course bird populations. This solution works and helped bring the goal to reduce fossil fuel use a reality,” The Nature Conservancy's David Sellers told Power Online magazine on July 21, 2015.

SHEERWIND, from pg. 12A Since Palmyra is home to more than a million nesting seabirds, conventional wind turbines were not an option due to the risk of bird strikes. Conventional wind turbines kill approximately 573,000 birds annually, according to a peer reviewed article in the scientific journal, Wildlife Society Bulletin, in 2015. Additionally, the low wind speeds on the atoll would have provided little or no energy production with traditional turbines. The wind turbines of the INVELOX system are inside the airflow duct and not visible from the outside. The Palmyra atoll tower initially had only one turbine inside the venturi. A second turbine was installed shortly afterwards. “We can add a third turbine if they need it,” Scholz said. “The system will be about 20 kilowatts when it is completed.” Scholz said at this juncture, SheerWind tests have shown the system functions at maximum efficiency with one, two or three turbines. Two larger INVELOX towers have recently been installed at the Army National Guard base at Fort Custer in Augusta, Mich. The National Guard likes the system because it doesn’t interfere with radar, like conventional turbines do. They also like it because it is a reliable source of renewable energy which could be constructed within the boundaries of the base. Scholz said it is the flexibility of the INVELOX design which makes the system suitable for so many applications. “Units can be constructed from concrete, plastic, even fabric. Different countries can use their most available materials. Buildings can be architecturally designed to incorporate the wind intake units,” she said, “so you wouldn’t even see the system from outside. For farms, the idea of converting silos is not out of the question. Municipalities could utilize the space already occupied by water towers to incorporate the system.” “We can design whatever size system we want,”

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending June 10. CORN — Corn started out the week continuing the streak of higher closes. That streak lasted until June 8 when July corn hit a high of $4.39.25 intraday before seeing lower closes on June 9 and 10. July corn is still using the 10-day moving average as a major support line. We have tested those levels a few times in the past couple of weeks and each time we have bounced higher. In this week's commitment of traders report we saw another JOE LARDY massive week of corn buying Research Manager, from the speculators. Their net CHS Hedging Inc. long position now stands at Inver Grove Heights, 220,000 contracts and that is the Minn. largest position from the speculators since 2012. The all-time record is 372,000 so there is still a ways to go to challenge that level. However, in just the past three weeks the speculators have purchased 197,000 contracts of corn so their appetite to add length is certainly intact. The squeeze on corn for feed in Brazil continues. Brazil is releasing another 500,000 tons from its reserves, but that supply is just about depleted. Conab just lowered its estimate for the Brazilian corn crop from 80 million tons to 76.2 million tons. That is a significant reduction and puts them below the current U.S. Department of Agriculture estimate for Brazil of 77.5 million tons. The corn crop is essentially complete with the latest planting report showing that 98 percent of the

It has been a roller coaster ride in the livestock markets over the past several years. The funny thing is this trend is likely to continue into the future as these markets remain in transition. That transition is from a bull market to a bear market that was completed back in the year 2014 and is following through today. Cattle prices have been the most erratic during this transition period as prices seem to rise and fall from week to week. The culprit behind the volatile swings is the fight between a lower supply of cattle vs. a weakening demand for beef. This action is likely to continue until an equiJOE TEALE librium is accomplished between Broker supply and demand. One thing Great Plains Commodity that will affect this price discovAfton, Minn. ery for beef is the competitive meat situation. There appears to be more than adequate chicken, turkey and pork available at lower prices per pound than beef at present. This disparity in value with the current economic conditions will continue to stand in the way of any significant rally in cattle prices. The fact that the herd size is projected to increase over the next couple of years is also a deterrent to higher prices as long as demand remains at current levels. This does not mean that from time to time cattle prices will not see rallies in price as short term demand for beef or tightened supplies of cattle are evident. Producers are urged to continue to monitor market conditions and protect inventories as needed. The hog market has experienced a much better spring as prices have worked higher since a low last

Each crop year seems to bring a new challenge and day-to-day decisions which impact profitability. This year, due to excessive moisture and a frost that reduced some stands, we’ve had a little delay in getting all the crops planted in some parts of southern Minnesota. But, for the most part, the crop is in throughout the upper Midwest. With a little heat things could catch up fast to meet our yield expectations. Side dressing and spraying are the immediate June tasks at hand. The timing of these applications can greatly impact yield. After that, producers will focus on pricing and delivering any JOEL LARSON remaining 2015 corn and soybean AgStar Financial Services Credit Director inventory and on pricing 2016 Blue Earth, Minn. crop. Recently there has been a nice run in the market. It’s kind of like seeing the sun come out after many days (weeks) of cloudy weather! I have been encouraged by producers rewarding the market as we approach prices at or near break-even for soybeans. The corn market provides a bigger challenge on both old and new crop. When to pull the trigger and make a sale you can feel good about might be this summer’s biggest challenge. The increase in new soybean sales could be an indicator that the export window in South America may be smaller than expected. What was once thought to be a record crop has been hit with adverse weather and is getting smaller. Conab reduced its production estimate for Brazil from 96.9 to 95.6 million tons. The current USDA estimate for Brazil is at 97 million tons. The WASDE report had a bullish tone for the soybean market. The decrease in the old crop carryout from 400 to 370 million bushels, and in the new crop from 305 to 260 million bushels provided the market with a spark. The decrease in the carryout is due mainly to an increase in old crop exports of 20 million bushels and an increase to new crop exports by 15 million bushels. Total export commitments had already surpassed the USDA's export figure so a revision on the WASDE report was needed. OUTLOOK: The soybean market will be watching two things: fund activity and weather. The fund position is currently 211,000 contracts which is just off the all-time record of 225,000 contracts. As long as the funds want to keep up the buying spree we will keep pushing higher. The market has already shown a willingness to pump in weather premium early in the season and if the hot forecasts linger we will see a highly volatile market. ❖

U.S. pork enjoys export demand TEALE, from pg. 14A October. Numbers have decreased enough while at the same time demand increased for pork. The weaker U.S. dollar bolstered export demand during the period and coupled with the value of pork to the other competitive meats helped support the good demand. As the summer approaches, as in years past, the hog market usually finds a seasonal top at this time of the year. Currently, the hog market appears to be somewhat struggling as prices move over the $80 level basis

lean and the pork cutout nearing $90. The futures market continues to carry a decent premium to the cash price as the June contract expires which could leave the futures vulnerable to a correction if the cash and pork cutouts begin to falter. The deferred contracts have been signaling a slide in prices into the fall due to the anticipation of increased numbers and a decline in demand. Therefore producers should remain aware of any changes in market direction and react accordingly to protect inventories. ❖

by 100 million bushels in the old crop and 50 million bushels in the new crop. The WASDE report was a mixed bag for corn. The domestic ending stocks were slightly lower than expectations in both the old and new crops. Offsetting the domestic numbers was the world ending stocks that were slightly higher than expectations. OUTLOOK: The focus of the market will turn to the weather for the next two weeks and then we will turn our attention to the June 30 planting and stocks report. The weather has ample heat in it, but the bigger question is will there be any rain to accompany it. SOYBEANS — If it wasn't for a very small down day on June 9, we would have had higher closes in July soybeans all week. July soybeans posted a gain of 46.25 cents for the week. The soybean market has been riding the strength of soybean meal on this rally. When meal was able to surpass the $400 mark and sustain it beans were able to make a big leap higher. On June 8, the gains in soybeans of 36 cents were truly remarkable given the lack of new fundamental news. The forecasts were calling for warmer weather but we usually don't tack on weather premiums of 40 and 50 cents this early in the growing season. Especially when we don't even have all of the soybeans planted already. Export inspections for soybeans were the lowest of the year by a wide margin. We just are not shipping out any beans right now. We did see an excellent week however in new soybean sales. Every single day this week we were treated to a new sale announcement at 8 a.m. The destinations were either to China or to unknown (China most likely). Both crop years were included in the sales.

Cheese sales steady, inventories remain high The following marketing analysis is for the week ending June 10. Cash dairy prices continued to strengthen the week of June 6 in what FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski called “the largest bear market rally we’ve seen in many years.” Cheddar block cheese saw a fourth consecutive week of gain, closing the second Friday of June Dairy Month at $1.4750 per pound, up 3.5 cents on

the week, up 19.5 cents in that period, but still 28 cents below a year ago. The barrels closed at $1.51, up 6.5 cents on the week, 21.25 cents below a year ago, but 3.5 cents above the blocks. Four cars of block sold this week and five of barrel. The strength has many scratching their heads, considering inventory levels. But demand remains strong, feed prices are looking stronger, and

concerns are mounting over summer weather and its impact on milk and component output. ■ Cheese production in the Midwest is active, according to Dairy Market News. Manufacturers are keeping vats full and bringing in spot loads of milk when schedules allow. Readily available milk moving at discounts is enticing some to run full schedules, Dairy Market News says, if they are not already doing so. Cheese sales are steady to increasing, according to Dairy Market News, and promotions for June Dairy Month are reportedly boosting sales. But inventories remain long in the Central region. The market undertone is steady. International interest is light. Western cheese makers report good domestic demand in retail and food service. “Any domestic demand is welcome in light of the limited export opportunities for U.S. cheese,” Dairy Market News stated. Western cheese output remains active with ample supplies of milk. Inventories are long and some industry contacts suggest a good share of the stocks are older. “There is some concern that the large existing cheese stocks will weigh heavily on market prices.” ■ It was just a week ago that the Daily Dairy Report’s Sarina Sharp wrote in the June 3 Milk Producers Council newsletter that “If the dairy market

recovery is to be sustained, it must be accompanied by increased demand or a slowdown in production. Demand is already quite strong, so supply is likely to be the driver.” Cash butter looked like it might be headed to $3 again but it gave back 2 cents June 10 on a trade and closed at $2.20 per pound. This is still up a dime on the week and the highest spot price since late January 2016, and 30 cents above a year ago. Only two cars traded hands on the week at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Butter manufacturers are running at or near full schedules, according to Dairy Market News. Participants feel butter stocks are at comfortable levels for this time of year. Sales into foodservice are strong. Retail sales are mixed. Some industry contacts report strong sales while others feel retail sales are at or below where they projected based on seasonality. The undertone is steady. Western butter markets also appear steady. With cream supplies generally adequate for processing, many butter makers are actively producing butter. However, a few manufacturers are backing off a little as milk production begins to decline seasonally and as more cream is pulled into other cream products. ■ Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk also had a good week, closing Friday at 83 cents per pound, up 1.75 cents on the See MIELKE, pg. 17A

Dairy exports lagging, despite high sales to Mexico MIELKE, from pg. 17A Income over feed cost reflects daily gross milk income less feed costs for an average cow producing 65 pounds of milk per day.“ “The allocation of the revenue per hundred pounds of milk (milk margin) is the estimated amount of the Pennsylvania all-milk price that remains after the feed costs per hundredweight of milk production are paid. Like income over feed cost, this measure also shows that the May PA milk margin was 3.45 percent lower than in April. Since feed prices are expected to stay reasonable, the moderate increases in milk prices shown in the futures markets for the second half of 2016 should increase IOFC,” Dunn concludes. The USDA’s latest National Milk Cost of Production report shows April total milk production costs remain below the previous month and a year

ago. Total feed costs averaged $10.50/ cwt., down 25 cents from February, down 15 cents from March, and $1.38 below April 2015. Purchased feed costs, at $5.56/cwt. were down 6 cents from the February level, down 34 cents from March, and 57 cents below April 2015. Total costs, including feed, bedding, marketing, fuel, repairs, hired labor, taxes, etc., at $21.63/cwt., were down 53 cents from February, down 28 cents from March, and $1.42 below a year ago. Feed costs made up 48.5 percent of total costs in April, down from 48.7 percent the month before and down from 51.5 percent a year ago. ■ USDA’s weekly Crop Progress Report shows 98 percent of the corn crop was planted as of June 5. This is up from 94 percent the previous week but lags a

Ninety percent of the corn is emerged, up from 78 percent a week ago, 1 percent ahead of a year ago and 4 percent ahead of the five-year average. Regarding soybeans, 83 percent are planted. This is up from 73 percent the previous week, 6 percent ahead of a year ago and 6 percent ahead of the five-year average. As for cotton, 75 percent of cotton is in the ground. This is up from 59 percent the previous week, even with a year ago, but 9 percent behind the fiveyear average. ■ A dark cloud remains over U.S. dairy exports which are well below the volumes shipped during most of 2013 and 2014 and the first five months of 2015, according to the U.S. Dairy Export Council. There is a bright spot in the April numbers. USDEC points to improved shipments of milk powder and whey protein concentrate, which led to the highest overall volume total in 10 months. U.S. exporters shipped 150,713 tons of milk powders, cheese, butterfat, whey and lactose in April This is up 11 percent from March (on a daily-average basis) though still down 19 percent year-over-year. Overall exports were valued at $366.7 million, down 31 percent from a year ago. Shipments of nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder totaled 46,213 tons. This is the most since last October, though still down 19 percent year-over-year. Sales to Mexico were up 22 percent vs. the prior year; but volume to Southeast Asia was off 29 percent, with lighter sales to Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. Shipments to China, Pakistan, Peru and the Middle East/North Africa region were lower across the board.

Exports of whey protein concentrate, at 23,520 tons, were up 5 percent from 2015 and the second-biggest month ever. Sales to China were the highest in seven months. Exports to Southeast Asia and Mexico were up double digits. U.S. suppliers also posted a large jump in exports of whole milk powder, moving 6,822 tons, up 74 percent year-over-year, and the most since May 2010. Nearly all the improvement came from record sales to Mexico (5,318 tons, more than the sales volume for all of 2015). Exports of the other large-volume categories, cheese, dry sweet whey and lactose, were well off the pace of 2015. April cheese exports totaled just 21,171 tons which is down 33 percent from last year and the lowest volume since December 2012. Shipments to Mexico were just 6,055 tons, a 15-month low. Sales to South Korea were down 57 percent from 2015; Japan, down 44 percent; and Australia, down 72 percent. Shipments of dry whey were 12,699 tons, down 28 percent, led by a 58 percent decline in sales to China. Through the first four months of the year, exporters have moved just 50,312 tons, the lowest since 2004. Overseas sales of butterfat were down 44 percent. “On a total milk solids basis, U.S. exports were equivalent to 13.4 percent of U.S. milk production in April, matching February for the highest figure in six months. Imports were equivalent to 3.3 percent of production, the lowest in six months. Through the first third of the year, U.S. exports were down 9 percent by volume and 23 percent by value from last year. Nearly every category tracked behind 2015 levels, with the drop-off in cheese the most pronounced,” says USDEC. Lee Mielke is a syndicated columnist who resides in Everson, Wash. CO and ARC-IC program options. The MYA price for a given commodity is not based on any specific local or terminal grain prices. The MYA price is the 12month national average price for a commodity, based on the average market price received at the first point of sale by farm operators across the United States. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service collects grain sales data on a monthly basis, which is then “weighted” at the end of the year, based on the volume of bushels sold in each month. USDA updates the average MYA price estimates on a monthly basis in its Supply and Demand report, which is released mid-month, and provides a pretty good price estimate for potential ARC-CO payments. USDA also publishes monthly and season-average estimated market prices for various commodities, which are available on the Farm Service Agency website: http://goo.gl/lgwN9M. The 2015 benchmark county yield for a given crop was calculated by taking the average county yields for the previous five years (2010-2014), dropping the high and low yield, and then averaging the other three yields. The BM corn yields in most Minnesota counties declined in 2015, due to the very low average county yields in 2014, as well as the elimination of the 2009 year from the BM calculation, which was a very strong yield year in most areas. Many counties in south-central, southwest, and central Minnesota had the county BM corn yields decline by 8-12

bushels per acre from 2014 to 2015. The relationship between the final 2015 county yield and the 2015 county benchmark yields is extremely important in calculating potential 2015 ARC-CO payments for corn and soybeans. Following is a guide on the likelihood of 2015 ARC-CO payments at various “percentage of BM yield” levels at the current MYA price estimates ($3.70 per bushel for corn and $9.05 per bushel for soybeans). Corn – Any county that has a “percentage of BM yield” of less than 109 percent will likely realize the maximum estimated 2015 ARC-CO payment for that county. Counties with a “percentage of BM yield” of 109 to 116 percent will likely receive 50 to 99 percent of the maximum payment. Counties with a “percentage of BM yield” of 117 to 122 percent will likely receive 1 to 49 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment. Counties with a “percentage of BM yield” of 123 percent or higher will likely not receive a payment. Soybeans – Any county that has a “percentage of BM yield” of less than 103 percent will likely realize the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment for that county. Counties with a “percentage of BM yield” of 104 to 110 percent will likely receive 50 to 99 percent of the maximum payment. Counties with a “percentage of BM yield” of 111 to 116 percent will likely receive 1 to 49 percent of the maximum 2015 ARC-CO payment. Counties with a “percentage of BM yield” of 117 percent or higher will likely not receive a payment. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service released the 2015 estimated average county yields for

corn, soybeans, and other crops in late winter, which can be used to estimate potential 2015 ARC-CO payments. The NASS yields may be adjusted slightly by USDA to arrive at the final 2015 BM yields and county FSA yields, which are used to calculate the 2015 ARC-CO payments. The 2015 NASS county yields are available at: http://www.nass.usda.gov/. Summary on 2015 ARC-CO estimates Remember that the 2015 corn and soybean ARC-CO payment levels are still estimates, which are based on the 2015 NASS county yield estimates and the current MYA prices. These payments could vary, based on the following situations: MYA price levels could have further changes between now and Aug. 31. If MYA prices decline, the likelihood of the level of ARC-CO payments increases, and vice-versa if the MYA price increases. The likelihood of major movements in the final MYA price decline is later in the 2015-16 marketing year, due to likely lower “weightings” for the monthly price averages in the final months. 2014 corn yields in some counties were adjusted considerably downward by USDA due to a large number of unharvested acres in those counties. This adjustment is not likely to be as significant with 2015 NASS yields in the Upper Midwest. There will likely be a 6.8 percent Federal sequestration reduction on all 2015 ARC-CO payments that will be paid in October, 2016, similar to the 2014 ARC-CO See THIESSE, pg. 21A

Blackduck, Minn.

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

P

erhaps you’re like us and enjoy visiting Minnesota and Iowa’s small towns. For example, Blackduck is a quiet small town of just under 800 people on U.S. Highway 71 north of Bemidji, Minn. If you drive around town exploring on a summer Saturday you’ll find the perfect small town library in the Blackduck Community library. Feel free to read one of your favorite magazines in a comfortable chair. If you ask, the librarian will tell you about the children’s art on the walls. She’s proud of her kids and her library. “The Blackduck Community Library was officially begun in 1909 by a group of ladies called the Young Ladies of Blackduck or aka The Wild Bees!,” Head Librarian Nance Kunkel said. After the library you can wander over to the Duck In And Eat café for coffee and a piece of pie. It’s a pleasant and friendly family-run place to while

away a half hour or so. A block away is the Blackduck Area History and Art Center. It’s open Thursday and Friday afternoons and Saturday’s from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It houses a museum with local history where you will learn that the town’s namesake is probably a cormorant and not a duck. The TIN PAN gALLErY art gallery is in the same building as the museum. The gallery displays work by local quilters, painters, photographers, and wood carvers. If the building is closed when you’re there look in the window. It’s a remarkable resource for a small town. Blackduck is a hot bed for the wood carving arts. You’ll learn that when you visit the pretty park along the highway. The park is called simply Way Side Park. It’s a great place to relax and stretch your legs if you’ve been driving a long time. If you wander around the park a little bit you’ll probably come across the handsome plaque dedicated to Jim

Schram. The quality of the plaque speaks to the high esteem residents hold Mr. Schram. It was he that taught many people in the area how to carve. Even though he only lived in Backduck for eleven years he taught community education classes in town as well as in nearby Bemidji. His generosity earned him the title of “Father of Blackduck Woodcarving”. Mr. Schram was one of the founders of the annual Blackduck Wood Carvers Festival which is held in Way Side Park on the last Saturday of July. We missed it but this unique festival apparently triples the town’s population and attracts wood carving artists from far and near to display and sell their art. How do these small towns throw such wonderful parties? Blackduck, like so many small towns, is an amazing place. ❖
