Forty-five years ago, anyone hoping to be someone in American agriculture was offered the same free advice: “Buy land. They’re not making it anymore.”

But “they” were making it. In fact, lots and lots of it.

According to data reported by the United Nations, the world’s FARM & FOOD FILE farmable land base grew by

Guebert: Farmers found acres in delicate ecosystems GUEBERT, from pg. 3 cost was an estimated $52 billion. The White House also grudgingly signed a deal to bolster the crumbling Farm Credit System.

With the bruises of that hard beating still showing, farmers, farm bankers and farm magazines soon began to chatter about how land prices had fallen enough to once again “cash-flow.” Most of the chats, discussions and stories ended with same old admonition of farmers everywhere: “… besides, they’re not making it anymore.”

But “they” were ... still. Between 1991 and 2011, according to the United Nations, “… global cropland grew by 78 million acres,” or nearly equal to America’s 1991 planted corn acreage.

Smack in the middle of that era, in November 2001, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a report on the fast-awakening ag giants to America’s south – Brazil and Argentina. The report aimed to “demystify sensational media accounts of vast resource potential” of the two new grain exporters.

Demystify or not, the report contained hard numbers about each nation’s available-to-be-developed arable land that were — by any definition — pretty

sensational.

“Brazil contains the world’s largest remaining tract of virgin land — an estimated 547 million hectares” or 1.35 billion acres — with “as much as one-fourth,” or about 335 million acres, “readily convertible to agricultural activity.”

And USDA added, “… both Argentina and Brazil have huge areas under permanent pasture — an estimated 142.5 and 185 million hectares, respectively — where “as much as one-fourth … could be converted to grain and oilseed production under the right market signals.”

That’s another 200 million acres between the two.

The market signals (chiefly price, but demand, too) were quickly given and just as quickly received.

According to USDA, American, Brazilian, and Argentine soybean production grew (respectively, in million metric tons) from 75.4, 35.0, and 26 in 2001 to a forecasted 107, 100, and 59 (again, respectively) by 2016.

So, no, “they’re” not making any more land. But for generations, profit-driven farmers have found more acres — often in delicate ecosystems like rain forests, flood plains, and dryland savannas — to

All this comes to mind as another generation of hot-money sharpies, dazzled by a couple of years of fat per-acre returns in crop farming, gather wheelbarrows of investor money to buy farmland around the United States and the world.

The amount of land and the per-acre price they are paying (given today’s substantially lower commodity prices) not only look suspiciously high, most appear to be tied to little more than the fact “that they’re not making it anymore.”

But that’s not a fact, is it?

“The first is that Delegate and Entrust have the same mode of action. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on populations to develop resistance to that class of insecticide. The second is that with both Delegate and Entrust, farmers must rotate to another class of insecticide after two applications. For conventional growers this is not really an issue since other options are available. But for organic growers, there are no options.”

Control Ron Branch, who grows blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries and owns Berry Ridge Farm near Alexandria, Minn., said he is crossing his fingers and hoping that researchers come up with a solution soon.

“This fruit fly has pretty much devastated the raspberry industry in Minnesota,” Branch said.

Branch has not yet tried any insecticides, although he’s looking for information on those that would work within the constraints of the raspberry harvest. Meanwhile, he will be trying to control the fly with trapping, cultural methods and early harvest.

“I’m going to thin my canes to increase air flow and decrease the canopy and hope that makes for a less hospitable environment,” he said. “I’ll also harvest earlier and refrigerate the fruit right away.

That will keep the eggs from incubating.”

Branch uses baited traps to monitor and he hopes that the traps may reduce numbers also.

“Every female that you catch stops her from laying eggs,” he said. “But I wonder if the bait in the traps just brings more flies to the area.”

Cookbook shows ways to treat food with respect Cookbook Corner

By SARAH JOHNSON The Land Correspondent The principles in the old “More-With-Less Cookbook” are defined by the book’s subtitle: “Suggestions by Mennonites on How to Eat Better and Consume Less of the World’s Limited Food Resources” (Herald Press, vintage, date unknown). These are not commandments. They are not rules. They are merely gentle suggestions, which fits in nicely with the way we should treat our food resources: gently and with great respect.

Each recipe conforms to three basic principles: Eat more whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds. Use carefully eggs, dairy products, meats and seafoods.

Avoid convenience foods, superprocessed foods, superpackaged foods, foods shipped long distances and foods heavy in refined sugars and fat.

The preface notes the members of the Mennonite Central Committee of Akron, Pa., felt a “holy frustration” with the state of affairs regarding the uneven consumption of the world’s food resources.

Many, many years later, we may also feel frustrated about the situation, and it may not be so holy!

Meal 2: Chicken Soup Bring broth to boil. Add 1/2 cup uncooked rice.

Cook until tender.

Joseph M. Hannan is a commercial horticulture field specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. He is teaching Iowa farmers how to monitor for SWD and how to identify it when they capture it in traps.

“SWD is in raspberry and blackberry here in Iowa,”

Hannan said. “We have also had a few minor instances of it in day neutral strawberries, grapes and late harvested aronia. It is still getting established across Iowa.

“In addition to monitoring, we are looking at infested fruit from a processing standpoint. We are asking questions like, ‘What are the laws around processing infested fruit? How bad can the infestation be and not affect product quality with standardized recipes? What food safety aspects are involved with processing infested fruits and what are the economics of processing infested fruit?’”

Hannan, Phillips and Abrahamson all agree there is a lot more to learn about spotted wing drosophila before farmers and gardeners can control its damage. ❖

The following marketing analysis is for the week ending April 22.

CORN — Corn extended its tremendous rally through mid-week before the bloom came off the rose. Fund short covering and weather concerns in South America ignited and supported the rally. When those concerns began to evaporate so did prices. The May contract dropped 6.75 cents for the week to settle at $3.71.75 per bushel.

The July contract retreated 6.5 cents to close the week at $3.75.5 and the December corn fell 7.25 cents to $3.81 per bushel. We’ll know more over the next few days, but the market was due for a correction after closing higher in 13 of the last 16 sessions.

Continuing wet weather in Argentina pushed traders to cover short positions, which they did in tremendous fashion. According to the latest Commitment of Traders report as of April 19, funds bought back 168,000 contracts over the last two weeks to leave them net short 48,000 contracts.

Export demand perked up with 241,000 metric tons to unknown (66 old crop and 176,000 metric tons new crop), 240,000 metric tons to Japan and 136,000 metric tons to unknown announced during the week on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s daily reporting system as U.S. Gulf corn is competitive on the world market.

So far, the month of April has been mostly a disappointment as far as price improvement for livestock prices. Both the cattle and hog markets have continued to experience steady (at best) to slightly lower prices through the middle of the month. It is the slowing export demand and a weakening domestic market which has precipitated this price action. With summer just around the corner, the question becomes: “Will grilling demand pick up and help overcome the sluggish demand for pork and beef?”

The cattle market appears to be in a slow downward drift in price over the past several JOE TEALE months. The anticipation of a Broker supply increase of cattle, along Great Plains Commodity Afton, Minn. with a slow demand for beef, seem to be the reason for such action. The battle between supply and demand for beef has continued for some time and does not appear to be subsiding anytime soon. As the herd size continues to expand and demand remains the same, beef prices are likely to continue to drift lower and the finished price for live cattle could follow lower.

The strong U.S. dollar, in combination with slowing economies around the world, has slowed the export market in recent weeks. This, along with a slowing domestic demand, is not painting a robust picture for a longer-term improvement in cattle prices. For the near-term outlook, the continued tight supply of market-ready cattle could hold prices relatively steady to even occasionally higher. Know what you’re getting into: Forming an entity should be viewed as a business restructure. The new entity will have a tax identification number, a bank account, file a tax return and conduct business which may have been previously operated by individuals.

Great care must be taken when forming an entity where parties will be contributing assets and liabilities to the new entity. There are many potential adverse income tax implications which could arise without detailed expert guidance.

Set the rules: The startup process is similar in most cases. Always begin the startup process with the end in mind. Talk about what it would look like if the owners decided to go separate ways. How would assets be divided and the entity dissolved?

Each entity will have a buy-sell agreement. Owners decide how to handle situations relative to the various exiting scenarios. Whether by death, disaster, divorce, disagreement, retirement or other circumstances, the process should be clear to all. Legal documents need to be drafted to protect both the business and the individuals. The owners will pre-determine the valuation process and the terms and conditions regarding the buyout process. If the business is to continue after an owner exits, the buyout payments must be structured so the business can remain viable while acquiring the additional debt associated with an owner buyout.

Each type of legal entity will have legal documents which provide governance and ownership rules. The legal documents will address voting. The owners must decide voting criteria such as whether unanimous, super majority or majority vote will be required for certain decisions. There are governing boards for some types of entities and elections will be held to vote on the governing board. Certain entities have meeting proto-

col which must be followed. This will include notification period, location, proxy voting, etc.

Ownership criteria are also included in the legal documents of an entity. The owners must determine who and how new owners can be admitted into the business. Ownership restrictions are often included to ensure new business partners have met the established rules for entering the business. This restriction also impacts the value of the business from a sale of ownership perspective. A closely held family business will often put limits on the buyer’s pool.

Decisions and economics: There is sometimes confusion regarding how owners get “paid” from the new entity. A business-like approach which pays people for their labor and management contribution as determined by their “job description” is recommended.

The various entity structures have different rules regarding owner’s compensation as well as different tax treatment for those payments.

A detailed cash flow for the business must be prepared during the planning stage. Prepare projections for sources and uses of cash, including debt repayment, capital purchases and cash to owners. The debt structure will be addressed based on whether or not debt is conveyed to the entity. Advisors can provide insight relative to tax basis, debt repayment capacity, and other financial components.

In other words, the discounts — like premiums — are there for an interpretation of where the market is likely to be in advance. Producers are urged to monitor market conditions and protect inventories as needed.

The hog market continues to struggle along, basically in a small cash trading range, while the futures market anticipates stronger prices. For this to happen, pork demand will need to increase in the weeks ahead. The problem being that export demand for pork has fallen off in recent weeks, so domestic demand will need to increase to offset the loss of foreign demand. Hog numbers are projected to stay relatively steady in the near future. Therefore, the possibility of higher prices are possible.

From a competitive meat standpoint, pork remains a good value, so demand should be fairly stable at this juncture. However, considering the fragile world economic situation and the decline in export business, a major price rally seems unlikely at this point.

With the premiums the futures market commands at this time, producers should consider the possibility of some price protection if warranted. ❖

bean loss in Argentina, so the USDA projection may be close to actual. The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange lowered their crop estimate from 60 mmt to 56 mmt. At 56 mmt it would still be the second largest crop on record.

One question which has yet to be answered is the split of predicted losses in Argentina between quantity and quality. If it is quality, those beans will find a home at a price. If it’s quantity, then the world will need to replace those beans. On the demand side, no increase in outlooks has surfaced.

U.S. growers have been rewarding the rising soybean market with both old crop and new crop sales.

Interior basis levels have moved lower as a result, which is usually the case. With the U.S. ending stocks still forecasted at 445 million bushels, it’s difficult to jump on the bandwagon saying prices can continue to rise at the pace we’ve see in April. Basis levels at the Gulf were strengthening on ideas that there will be switching of exports from South America back to the United States.

Weekly export sales were decent at 15 million bushels when we only need to average 4 million bushels through the end of the market year to hit the USDA outlook for 1.705 billion bushels of exports. New crop soybean commitments are 77.4 million bushels compared to 150.4 million bushels committed at this time last year. ❖

OUTLOOK: New crop sales were heavy, but indications are growers are still behind.

SOYBEANS — “What goes up, must come down,” as the old saying goes and that was true in the soybean market as traders headed home for the weekend. Soybeans still managed to hold onto gains for the week despite a big tumble at the end of the week.

For the week, May soybeans were up 31 cents at $9.87 per bushel, July beans rallied 32 cents at $9.96.25 and November soybeans were up 16.5 cents at $9.83 per bushel. The May contract traded to a high of $10.34.75 per bushel before finding selling pressure. It had closed higher in eight out of the last 11 trading sessions.

Deteriorating crop conditions in Argentina due to excessive rain, dryness in Brazil and political turmoil in Brazil kept money pouring into the market and put a significant risk premium back into the market. A record volume of 804,000 contracts were traded in the soybeans on Wednesday! Soybeans swelled to levels not witnessed in a lead contract since last August. The Argentine ag secretary lowered the country’s crop forecast from 60.9 mmt to 57.6 mmt. Harvest progress in Argentina is behind and reportedly at its slowest pace in nearly 15 years.

NYSTROM, from pg. 8 Brazil announced it temporarily cut off the 8-10 percent corn import tax for countries outside the Mercosur trade bloc (includes Argentina, Venezuela, Paraguay and Uruguay) to alleviate high domestic prices. The cut only covers a maximum of 1 million metric tons over the next six months when the trade was anticipating it would include up to 3 to 5 mmt. This may open the window for U.S. corn to work into Brazil, at least until the safrinha or second corn crop is available toward the end of June. Trade chatter is for possibly up to 1 mmt of U.S. corn to be exported to Brazil. Trade’s estimates for the safrinha crop range from around 50 mmt to 57 mmt after a lack of rain and high heat has cut forecasts. Brazil’s total corn crop may decline to the 78 mmt area compared to the USDA’s 84 mmt outlook, according to trade chatter. Heading into the weekend, weather forecasts were looking up with a wetter Brazil and drier Argentine outlook.

U.S. corn planting was 13 percent complete as of April 17, nicely ahead of the 8 percent average.

Weather conditions were conducive to planters hitting the field during the week. Progress as of April 24 is estimated around 25 percent complete vs. the average of 16 percent complete. Weekly export sales were very good at 47.4 million bushels. This once again narrowed the gap between this year and last year’s commitments to 12 percent. Sales for next year are now above last year at this time at 82.3 million bushels vs. 79.8 million bushels on the books last year. Weekly ethanol production was up marginally 1,000 barrels per day to 939,000 bpd while

Weaker milk prices could result after seasonal peak The following marketing analysis is for the week ending April 22.

U.S. dairy cows are filling bulk tanks and processing plants around the country and putting a damper on prices. March milk production in the top 23 states hit 17.2 billion pounds, up a surprising 1.8 percent from March, 2015. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture’s preliminary data, this is the highest yearover-year increase since last May. Output in the 50 states totaled 18.4 billion pounds, also up 1.8 percent.

Revisions added 4 million pounds to the original February estimate. First Quarter milk output in the United States amounted to 53 billion pounds which is up 2.1 percent from First Quarter 2015.

March cow numbers in the top 23 states totaled 8.64 million head, up 9,000 from February and 19,000 more than a year ago. Output per cow averaged 1,993 pounds, up 31 pounds from a year ago and the highest output per cow for March since the series began in 2003.

■ USDA’s latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook warns that “Several factors indicate dairy prices may fall, including recent high stock levels for butter and cheese, higher forecasts for milk production, and higher imports of products with high milk-fat content.

However, strong domestic demand is expected to mitigate downward price pressure.

“U.S. dairy imports continued relatively high in February, especially for products with high milk-fat content,” the Outlook reports. “Imports of cheese and butterfat products were higher than January and much higher than February 2015. Imports from New Zealand, the European Union and Canada made up substantial shares of dairy imports.

“On the export side, combined exports of NDM and SMP remained strong compared to exports of other products, with exports to Mexico making up the largest share. Exports of whey products grew from January to February and exceeded February 2015. U.S. exports of butterfat products also increased significantly over the previous month and February 2015.

“Price differences between U.S. domestic wholesale prices and foreign export prices have contributed to the increase in imports of products with high milk-fat content and the resilience of exports of products with high skimsolids content.”

■ Feed price forecasts continue to remain relatively low. The corn price forecast for 2015-16 is $3.40-$3.70 per bushel. The 2015-16 soybean meal price forecast is $275-$295 per short ton, unchanged at the midpoint from last month’s forecast. The national average price for alfalfa hay decreased from $147 per short ton in January to $142 in February.

parasites. Yeasts, rusts, mildews, mushrooms and truffles are examples of fungi.

Morchella esculenta, commonly known as the morel, was adapted as the official mushroom of the state of Minnesota in 1984.

Colorful names for morels include: dry land fish, because when sliced lengthwise the shape resembles a fish. Regions in Kentucky call them hickory chickens, merkels or miracles, based on a story of how a mountain family was saved from starvation by eating morels.

Warm and wet weather is ideal for favorable morel growth. Some folks believe searching when the lilacs bloom is best. Some say the field corn should be a couple of inches high and others say oak leaves need to be the size of squirrel ears to find morels. They are elusive and unpredictable often coming up in unexpected places. Typically they are found in moist areas, around dying or dead elm trees, ash trees, or old apple trees.

First time morel hunters should make their first expedition with an experienced person who knows what a good morel looks like. There are many types of morels — some edible and some poisonous.

True morels have surface pockets which resemble a sponge. When sliced in half lengthwise, the stem is hollow.

They usually are 2-6 inches high and cone shaped. They can be colored creamy tan or shades of brown and grey. If you are unsure if your mushrooms are the edible kind, err on the side of caution and get positive identification from an expert.

The best cooking method for these gems, in my opinion, is sautéing in butter. The taste is so wonderful, earthy and delicate; it needs no added flavorings. Let the morel be the star of the dish!

• Normal field practices to be included under a custom farming agreement should be listed (including tillage, planting, weed control, harvesting, hauling grain, etc.). Typically, these agreed-upon practices are part of the per acre custom farming agreement and payment per acre.

• Additional tillage trips or replanting due to weather conditions, or added spraying applications of pesticides to control weeds, insects or diseases, which are provided by the custom operator, are usually charged to the landowner at a custom rate per acre, which is over and above the base custom farming rate.

• Timing of planting and harvesting operations should be discussed and negotiated between the custom operator and the landowner prior to the growing season, and possibly be included in the written contract. This can become a tenuous issue, especially in years with challenging weather conditions.

• The custom operator may be asked for advice by the landowner regarding the seed corn hybrid or soybean variety to plant, fertilizer rates, chemical applications, levels of crop insurance, farm program sign-up choice, or grain marketing decisions. However, the final decisions on these type of items lie with the farm owner/operator, and the custom operator needs to be careful not to take responsibility for the final authority on those decisions.

• Typically, the harvested grain of the landowner is delivered by the custom operator to a farm storage facility that is owned or rented by the landowner, or to an agreed upon area grain elevator, as part of the custom farming agreement. Any grain deliveries beyond the local area usually result in the landowner paying an extra custom rate charge for grain hauling. Also, if the landowner uses the custom operators grain drying and handling facilities, there is typically an added charge for these services.

Waystations vital to monarch butterfly migration

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent The monarch butterfly, known for its striking black and orange appearance and admired for its thousand-mile annual migration to Mexico, was once one of our most common pollinators. But the monarch is not as common as it once was, which accounts for organizations devoted to the conservation of the monarch through research and education. A number of them have formed a national partnership called the Monarch Joint Venture.

The Monarch Lab at the University of Minnesota is one member of MJV. The Monarch Lab does research and outreach education concerning monarch butterflies and citizen science. Katie-Lyn Bunney, program coordinator at the Monarch Lab, said in an e-mail interview that it is difficult to forecast the future.

“Monarch numbers fluctuate very much from year to year due to the seasons and their migration,” Bunney said. “However, the overall population of monarchs in North America has been dropping drastically over the years — over 90 percent in the past two decades.”

Conservation groups have petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the monarch as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, but no decision has been made.

“Monarchs need our help to conserve their migration,” Bunney said. “Planting milkweed and nectar plants is the best way to do this.”

Farming practices and gardeners’ abhorrence of weeds tend to eradicate milkweed.

“Monarchs deal with many threats, but their largest is the decline in milkweed,” Bunney said. “Since they depend on these plants for egg laying and for food for their young, they need this plant to be plentiful for them to prosper during the summer (their breeding season). Unfortunately, many see this plant as a weed and work to wipe them out from their yards, parks, etc.”

Other factors contributing to the decline, in addition to the usual dangers of migration, were finding nectar sources to fuel them on their migration, colder and wetter winters in Mexico and pesticides.

Gardeners can lend Monarch butterflies a hand by providing breeding spots as well as rest stops for their migration. Monarch Waystations are one part of Monarch Watch, a University of Kansas program which is also part of MJV. Jim Lovett of Monarch Watch said there are 12,677 habitats registered as Monarch Waystations around the country. Three representative waystations in Minnesota can be found in New Ulm, Springfield, and in

the country near Henderson. They’re all a bit different.

“I knew of the waystation program and have always been interested in native plants,” Diane said in an e-mail interview. “I have had a lot of good results over the years. We’ve had many many monarchs as well as other butterflies and insects.”

Milkweed, orange butterfly weed, purple coneflowers, and other pollinator-friendly plants fill a large portion of the backyard and grow around the garage, house, and fenceline. They’ve been growing about eight years.

“It has been interesting to note which plants have done well, which plants have a high germination rate and need to be curtailed,” Diane said. “While the native planting only gets cut down once a year, it does require maintenance and work. You have to monitor what birds bring in, what weeds develop.”

The only reason the waystation doesn’t cover more of their yard, she said, is because she has dogs and “They need their own space.”

Springfield Amanda and Dan Meyer have a large area of native plants growing in the backyard of their Springfield home. Amanda is a science teacher and was aware of the Monarch migration patterns and their decline in numbers.

“Just like us, they need food for energy and if they’re going to make that whole migration path (to Mexico), they need places along the way to stop and eat,” Amanda said.

However, it was the Meyers’ interest in supporting native species that was the catalyst for their waystation. With a large corner lot, they had space to plant native grasses. Besides their affinity to native plants, such grasses take less water.

They had at least four types of native grasses, to which they added forbs such as coneflowers, goldenrod, milkweed, wild onion, mallow, compass, and butterfly weed.

Meyer said the Waystation program suggests having a variety of milkweed species and a variety of nectar plants. “I use their list to select new plants,” she said. “And of course, I want them to be native.”

She has also kept a couple of non-native hollyhocks because they are good nectar plants.

Henderson Paul and Dawn Tuttle started a monarch waystation in 2014 on their acreage outside of Henderson.

They had purchased the 7 acre abandoned homestead over 15 years before because they needed a project, Dawn said. They restored the buildings, keep a couple sheep and a Pygmy goat. Paul planted a vegetable garden and Dawn planted a flower garden.

“We both got into (the Waystation Program) because our daughter made us quite aware of what was going on with monarchs,” Dawn said. “She hooked us up with the (Monarch Watch) website because of the seeds that were available.”

Much of their 7 acres is wooded, but they established the waystation in an open area and are taking a measured approach.

The Springfield City Council, who heard the complaints, suggested they needed to let people know what they were doing. At the suggestion of Amanda’s mother, they enrolled in the Monarch Waystation program, which includes a sign.

“Ever since we put out that sign, we haven’t had any other questions about that plot of land,” Amanda said. “I think people appreciate knowing that it looks kind of messy for a reason. The waystation helps the monarchs and it helps us.”

Farmers join efforts to restore monarch butterfly habitat

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent LAKE BENTON, Minn. — Farmers, on their own or with the aid of the U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, are joining efforts in the recovery of the monarch butterfly. Once an abundant pollinator, monarch numbers Randy Krause have declined 90 percent over the past two decades, according to the University of Minnesota Monarch Lab. Monarch butterflies make a thousand-mile migration to Mexico every year. In addition to the hazards of migration, multiple factors in the United States and Mexico have contributed to the decline. The greatest of these is the loss of habitat, especially milkweed where they lay their eggs. It is in this area farmers have found they can help.

Monarch Joint Venture is a national partnership of organizations working for the conservation of the monarch. MJV’s website states: “With the introduction of herbicide tolerant crops, management shifted from a till-based approach to the widespread use of herbicides. This practice has diminished much of the milkweed growing in agricultural areas, since milkweed can survive some tilling, but cannot survive herbicides.”

Randy Krause, conservation technician with the Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District, explained that at one time milkweed was so abundant, the loss of some was not a concern.

“When Roundup came out, it did such an excellent job of controlling milkweed that it eliminated a lot of it,” Krause said.

Planting milkweed seed, along with native flowers which provide food for monarchs, is part of two USDA programs to benefit all pollinators. Krause said that programs promoting the planting of milkweed may sound strange to farmers, but some “are fine with it because they understand there is a need for the habitat. They thought it was a weed, but they are willing to do it anyway.”

Enrolling Krause works with farmers who want to sign up under the Conservation Reserve Program’s Native Habitat Development for Pollinators, administered by the Farm Service Agency. It’s a fairly new part of CRP, and he said this year there have been about a dozen sign-ups in Lincoln County. The pollinator program has been around longer in the Conservation Stewardship Program, which is administered by Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Conrad Schardin, who farms near Lake Benton, said it was Krause who suggested he might look into the pollinator habitat. He already has 30 acres in CRP, but he’s looking at “a couple little marginal pieces of ground that we’re going to put back into CRP.” “One of the benefits of putting it in the pollinator program is that they will take smaller parcels,” Schardin said.

This won’t happen until 2017. Since he has already put fertilizer on the ground for 2016 corn, he’ll sign up this summer, which points to another benefit of the program.

“You can sign up anytime,” Schardin said. “It’s a year-round sign-up.”

Schardin is aware that pollinators “have gotten a rough ride” with ag’s efficient weed control and with fewer flowering plants being raised. He farms 2,400 acres, mainly corn and soybeans with about 250 acres in grass hay and alfalfa hay mix. The pollinator habitat will be a rather small parcel of his acres, but he likes the idea that he can do something to help.

“We’re going to try it,” Schardin said. “It’s something new that I’ve never done before. But I’ve never shied away from trying something different. My wife has even brought up milkweeds for the monarchs. I might try it and throw it in there and see what we can come up with.”

“Once you get them established,” he said, “there isn’t a lot you have to do for them. Put some mulch around them and a little bit of slug bait. That’s kind of what I like about them.”

Slugs will punch holes in the leaves, but it is a problem, Milbradt said, that is fairly easy to control.

“You have to get on them early in the spring,” he explained. “Buy slug bait, the pellets, and sprinkle around each hosta — maybe before the hosta is even up because the slugs wake up before the hostas do and they’re looking for something to eat. Every twothree weeks you do it again and you

“The knowledge in those magazines was just phenomenal,” he said.

His wife gave him “Hostapedia” by Mark Zilis, which he still uses to make selections. These days he orders most of his hostas from Jim’s Hostas in Dubuque, Iowa, which ships bare roots in the spring.

On a less-horticultural level, it helps if you love them. “I tell people you have to talk to them,” he said.

“Every morning you have to go out and tell them, ‘Oh, you’re looking pretty this morning.’”

“A couple years ago I started raising hostas from seed,” he said. “You find a striped plant and save the seeds from it. Plant them in December or January in the house, and they germinate.

About 80 percent of the hostas will flower and 50 percent of those will set a seed pod.”

If you get up before the bees, you can gather pollen and have more control, but Milbradt lets the bees do the pollinating. “You never know where the bee has been and the crosses you’ll get,” he said. “If you take seed from a variegated plant, you’re going to get a green hosta, where if you take a seed from a striped plant, you can get all kinds of stuff and a lot more variety.”

He said he doesn’t understand why, “only God and the scientists know that,” but he has one striped plant that he uses for his seed gathering.

Does he have a favorite among his 500 varieties? He said his favorite is usually the one he’s looking at. Move a few feet away, and that one will be his favorite. If really pushed, he might choose one called Paradigm.

“It has green and dark green and light green, and a lot of corrugation, and pretty decent height,” Milbradt points out, standing next to it. “But I kind of like that one over there, too,” he says, gesturing toward a nearby plant.

It’s like having a large family of children. Why would you choose a favorite when you love them all? There is Northern Exposure with a large leaf that looks like an artist painted it, and Antioch, his largest hosta. There is Regal Splendor, whose flower stems grow 60-inches tall, and Lakeside

Ringmaster, one of the varieties that comes from the Lakeside Nursery in Tennessee. And there are varieties developed by renowned breeder Mildred Seaver, who was known as “Queen of Hostas”. Many of of those varieties have “Sea” in their name, like Queen of the Sea and Sea Lightning.

The latter is the striped plant from which Milbradt takes seed.

Milbradt and his wife made a move last year from Marshall to a home on Lake Shetek. During the summer and fall he transplanted 425 of his collection. So now he is cultivating a new hosta haven.

I

n an age of digital technology, Mary Bruno goes old-school for her visual creations. Linoleum blocks, lead type, carving knives, ink and old printing presses are the tools she uses to produce her art at Bruno Press in St. Joeseph, Minn.

Mary’s father, Don Bruno, taught graphic art at St. Benedict’s College in St. Joseph.

He wasn’t a printer, but when print shops started throwing out beautifully crafted machines like the 1940s Vandercook #4 and the Chandler & Price letter presses, he couldn’t tolerate the waste. Over time he collected six presses and took up printing as an avocation.

Mary inherited the presses when Don passed away in 2003.

Mary grew up listening to the mechanical sounds of the old presses. The rollers of the Vandercook hand-operated press travel over its carefully machined rails. Finishing its pass over inked type and blocks, the roller unit returns to the beginning with a satisfying click. She also listened to the busy whir of the electrically-operated Chandler & Price as Don fed cards into it one by one.

Under Mary’s management, Bruno Press may have the same general organized clutter. Ink cans and carving knives occupy the shelves, cabinets and desks. Posters and calenders adorn the walls and are even hanging from the ceiling, much the way Don had it in his day.

But, after more than a decade, Mary has taken the art of graphic design in her own direction. “I studied printmaking in college,” she said as she carved an old-fashioned steam train engine into a linoleum block.

Mary also studied under master printmakers in Europe. She met her current intern, Esther Szac, in France. Szac is organizing Mary’s catalog of greeting cards.

“Bruno Press has more than 200 card designs,” Szac said. “Some are pretty salty and others are for children.”

Bruno Press practices what Mary calls, “The New Old School.” Mary loves the old presses and classic designs; but what she creates has a modern and sometimes in-

your-face style that is unique to her. One of her posters says, “You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.”

A Father’s Day card brazenly exclaims, “You are the Best Freakin’ Dad Ever” and a sympathy card for a relationship fracture features a banana peel with the message, “Sorry About the Split.”

This spring, Mary is teaching a class in her dad’s old classroom at St. Benedict’s and she has another class with St. Cloud State University students. She is not living small. ❖
