Letter: State must invest in roads, bridges, schools To the Editor: In The Land Jan. 8 issue, an article titled “Legislator talks property taxes” presented the views of Realtor Roger Heller and State Rep. Tim Miller. Heller said, “Land investors are heading to Iowa and South Dakota. Both states have more favorable property taxes.” Personally, I would much rather see
farmers buying land in Minnesota instead of land investors. Miller said, “No” to any gas tax increase. As a long-time farmer, I do hope we continually invest what is needed to maintain our roads, bridges, and public schools to the best of our abilities. Greg Rendahl Ostrander, Minn.

China markets see woe, U.S. agriculture sees red
OPINION
2013 and $10.10 in 2014. American pork exports to China are also on the way down — way, way down. In its Dec. 15 Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook, USDA noted that to-date American pork exports to China were 16 percent below year-ago numbers. (In September, well before China’s market began to melt badly, USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service “unofficially” estimated American pork exports to China would fall 25 percent below USDA’s “official forecast.”) It’s not that China is importing less pork; it isn’t. China’s import rules and world currency markets, however, are slicing U.S. exports. For example, China continues to maintain a zero tolerance rule for ractopamine, a feed additive used in the United States and permitted in other markets. As such, China tests — and slows — every shipment of American pork into its ports. Worse, the European Union’s wobbly economy means its currency continues
to weaken against the dollar. Because of that weakness, EU pork exports to China are up a whopping 29.5 percent — mostly at the expense of the Americans. China has other problems too: a currency that most economists believe remains overvalued; a central government that insulates businesses (like banking) from global competition; and heavily-traded, mostly speculative stock markets that play an oversized role in the nation’s economy.

Expect similar weather in 2016 By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer Agriculture has stepped up and is adapting to changing climates, said Mark Seeley, University of Minnesota “weather man.” Seeley specializes in weather and climate impacts on Minnesota agriculture so he knows what he’s talking about. Mark Seeley “We see Minnesota and Midwestern farmers aggressively tackling the problems of erosion that occur with these severe events. Timing of fertilization is changing such as more split applications to minimize runoff or leaching losses during the growing season,” Seeley said. “Hybrid selection, even crop choices are being considered because farmers are more in tune with how the growing seasons have changed as a result of climate change.” He sees evidence that adaptation changes are well underway and he expects them to accelerate. Cover crops now play a role in the farming landscape. “Items such as nutrient recycling, preservation of organic matter, cover and protection of the soil are key reasons why cover crops have now become such important items of conversation and practice,” Seeley said. “They have multiple benefits to our landscape. I’m pleased to see our Extension Service actively promoting the education and adaptation of this major change in the farming landscape.” Weather forecast With 2015 being a near perfect growing season in most of Minnesota, there were fewer weather extremes that have become common in recent years. “We did have a relatively quiet year from the standpoint of extremes and we had significant moderation through the entire crop season,” noted Seeley. Because of timely rains and moderate temperatures, Seeley called 2015 the best cropping season in well over 50 years. Now thanks to a wetter than normal November with soils still unfrozen, there has been good recharge of soil moisture. Any dry subsoil areas are mostly confined to northwest Minnesota, said Seeley. Once soils are frozen, recharge of winter moisture via snow and or rain is lessened considerably. Now farmers are looking to the weather predicted for the 2016 cropping season So his take on how to ‘think your way’ into the 2016 cropping season as it pertains to weather? “We’re a little bit uncertain on spring moisture patterns, but moisture recharge was good this fall. We’re noting that the first half of winter will be milder than normal and the second half is more uncertain,” said Seeley. “We could go either way. We could accumulate some abundant snowfall but it’s a bit of a wild card.” Seeley supports University of Minnesota Extension research results that indicate protective reduced tillage can minimize soil loss, especially during extreme winds of fall and winter. He noted wind storms are becoming more significant across the Midwest. Reduced tillage protects the soils up to a limit but sudden wind events of 40, 50,
even 60 mph winds literally scour the landscape regardless of tillage said Seeley. El Niño Seeley explained that over time the Pacific has produced an El Niño current where the ocean waters in the eastern Pacific, just off the equator, are warmer than average. The energy that is part of that warm body of water gets moved away through a stronger southern jet stream out of the sub-tropics. That has been a good supplier of moisture into the southern and central United States, he noted. Seeley said El Niño is the reason for occasional heavy flooding in the Southwest, which occurred again this winter season and generous rains across the Corn Belt. “El Niño is associated with a generally favorable weather pattern during the summer,” he said. He pointed out that occasional large scale areas of turbulence form in the Indian Ocean between India and Australia and move across the Pacific. “These generally are short-time occurrences but when they do happen, they can influence weather patterns across the United States for up to six weeks,” he said. “We experienced a couple of those occurrences in 2004 when suddenly around St. Patrick’s Day rain or snow in the Rockies patterns developed which persisted into mid-June. That set us up for the biggest crop year ever, which was reinforced with another rain period about six weeks later. “Scientists are learning more and more about the Pacific waters and its ocean temperature cycles. Also those areas of scattered turbulence. We’re learning more about intermittent features like La Niña and El Niño, and long term observations of how ocean temperatures sequence back and forth every 10 years or so.” Seeley explained that El Niño or La Niña and turbulence migrating out of the Indian Ocean really impact the Corn Belt. “We’re learning how to better identify those storms and are now monitoring these disturbances on a weekly basis,” he said. When it comes to forecasting temperature and moisture, Seeley explained that temperature forecasting has a more accurate component due to a multitude of thermometers at many locations where data has been cataloged, stored, and analyzed over a long period of time. “So when analyses are done of the upper atmosphere and then incorporated with that surface data it’s much easier to get a handle on what the temperature trends are going to be,” Seeley said. “I think we are looking at an overall similar weather situation as we just experienced in 2015. The only complicating factor is that there may be a few more rainy periods this spring. But at this time with the Pacific still being in a mostly neutral standing, I don’t think we need to plan for any particular variation from the climate and weather patterns of the past year.” Mark Seeley was interviewed by The Land in December 2015. ❖

USDA lowered 2016 milk production, exports forecast This column was written for the marketing week ending Jan. 15. The U.S. Department of Agriculture raised its 2015 milk production estimate, on slightly stronger growth in milk per cow in its latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report. Forecast 2016 milk production was reduced from last month. Cow numbers

were lowered due to lower expected milk prices and the recent blizzard in Texas and New Mexico. Growth in milk per cow was reduced on lower milk prices. Production and marketings for 2015 were forecast at 208.4 billion pounds and 207.4 billion pounds respectively. Both are up 100 million pounds from last month’s report. If realized, 2015 production and marketings would be up 2.4 billion pounds or 1.2 percent from 2014. Production and marketings for 2016 are now projected at 211.8 and 210.8 billion pounds respectively,
down 600 million and 700 million pounds respectively from last month. If realized, 2016 production and marketings would be up 3.4 billion pounds or 1.6 percent from 2015. Exports were lowered on both a fat and skim-solids basis as global supplies of dairy products remain large and demand relatively weak. Continued strength in domestic butter use will limit the competitiveness of U.S. butter in world markets. Fat and skim solid-basis imports for 2015 were unchanged. The average yield per acre is estimated at a record high 48.0 bushels, 0.3 bushel below the November forecast but 0.5 bushel above the 2014 yield. All cotton production was estimated at 12.9 million 480-pound bales, down less than 1 percent from the December forecast and down 21 percent from 2014. The U.S. yield is estimated at 769 pounds per acre, up 1 pound from the December forecast but down 69 pounds from last year. Market uncertainty continues as global oil prices have plunged and stocks are not showing much sign of hope. Dairy traders await the Jan. 22 release of December Milk Production and Cold Storage data. ■ Chicago Mercantile Exchange block Cheddar cheese closed the third Friday of January at $1.4950 per pound, up 3.5 cents on the week and 2.5 cents above a year ago. The barrels finished at $1.5250, down 1.5 cents on the week but 7.5 cents above a year ago and 3 cents above the blocks. Demand appears good as only three cars of block traded hands this week at the CME and nine of barrel. But, FC Stone’s Ryan Cox warned in the Jan. 12 Early Morning Update that U.S. cheese is “losing market share for exports, especially to Asia.” Colleague, Dave Kurzawski wrote Jan. 14: “Fundamentally, the bearish picture has yet to change and the list is long from higher production in the U.S. and EU, the Russian dairy ban, weak Chinese imports

MIELKE, from pg. 8 were raised largely on higher cheese imports. Dairy product prices for 2015 were adjusted for December data. Butter prices in 2016 were raised from last month on relatively strong demand and lower expected production. Cheese, nonfat dry milk and whey prices were reduced. Relatively large beginning stocks of cheese and weaker beginning year prices underlie the reduction in the cheese price forecast. NDM and whey prices were expected to be pressured by weakness in exports. The 2016 Class III milk price forecast was lowered on lower cheese and whey prices. It is expected to range $14.05-$14.85 per hundredweight, down 70 cents from last month’s report, and compares to the 2015 average of $15.80 and $22.34 in 2014. The peak futures contract settled Thursday at $16.05 in October. The 2016 Class IV price forecast was reduced due to a lower NDM price more than offsetting a higher butter price. The Class IV is projected at $13.35$14.25/cwt., down 35 cents from last month’s expectation. But, USDA’s 2016 forecast butter price is $1.89-$2 per pound, which may be too low. ■ Crop data shows 2015 corn for grain production estimated at 13.6 billion bushels, down slightly from the November forecast and down 4 percent from the 2014 estimate. The U.S. average yield is estimated at 168.4 bushels per acre, down 0.9 bushel from the November forecast and 2.6 bushels below the 2014 average. Soybean production in 2015 totaled a record 3.93

“Global milk supplies for 2016 are looking like they will also be strong, at least in the U.S. and the EU.” “Oceania is in the middle of summer, with hot and increasingly dry conditions in some milk regions, leaving milk volumes there more uncertain. Higher milk volumes domestically and in the EU will likely keep cheese volumes strong and global export competition active. Thus, the significant question hovering over early 2016 is whether markets will continue to absorb volumes of cheese without prices being adversely affected. “Western cheese production is mostly steady and active. MIELKE, from pg. 10 tor Jerry Dryer reported in Friday’s DairyLine that commercial disappearance of butter in September, October, and November, was up 4.6 percent from 2014, “so demand was strong despite lackluster exports,” and the blizzard in New Mexico and Texas. As I reported two weeks ago, thousands of dairy cows and young stock died as a result of winter storm Goliath and that will mean repercussions for months to come. Dryer’s Jan. 8 DFMA reported that both mega cheese plants in the region were back at full capacity within a few days and that sources in the region pegged the storm cow-kill at 15,000 to 40,000 head; enough to pull national milk output down between 0.2 percent and 0.5 percent until the herd is rebuilt. “Large numbers of animals that survived the storm will have stress-induced reduced production through their current lactation,” the DFMA stated. “As fresh cows join the herd, the storm’s impact will steadily decline. Livestock dealers from across the country have also already arrived in the region.” Dryer also pointed out that “Pre-existing supply agreements designed to keep plants full were triggered and milk was being moved from powder plants in the region. Instead of affecting the cheese market, it appears the storm will have the most direct impact on milk powder and butter markets,” Dryer said. ■ Spot Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Jan. 15 at 75 cents per pound, up 1.75 cents on the week but 20 cents below a year ago. Five cars sold this week. “Much of the nation’s milk production is following typical seasonal trends with various weather systems giving a push up or down to milk volumes,” according to DMN. “Northeast and Mid-Atlantic milk production are at seasonal levels. Cooler, comfortable temperatures in Florida helped increase milk production. North Central area farmers have seen some increases in milk. Utah and Idaho milk intakes have been steady, but several cold days in the Pacific Northwest have pushed production down a bit. Farmers across California and Arizona are facing slightly lower milk volumes while trying to stretch feed supplies until spring, when the new alfalfa hay crop becomes available. “With many schools resuming sessions after winter break, bottling demand has increased. In addition, smaller operations have resumed accepting milk deliveries that were slowed over the holidays.” ■ A joint press release says the U.S. Dairy Export Council and National Milk Producers Federation continued to play an active role in the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement process this week, as USDEC President Tom Suber testified before the U.S. International Trade Commission representing the U.S. dairy industry. “USDEC, working with NMPF and other organizations in the dairy industry, is still completing its overall analysis of TPP,” said Suber. “The deal falls short in providing the degree of market access we had been seeking, but it also avoids a disproportion-

Farmer switched acreage to strip tillage in 2015 By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer Making a total switch from conventional tillage to strip tillage on 3,500 acres in one season may seem like a boondoggle. And Brian Ryberg, of Ryberg Farms in Buffalo Lake, Minn., won’t have data until harvest next fall to verify his wisdom, or lack thereof. But at this stage Ryberg is confident, even excited, that he and his wife Sandy made the right decision in a “sit down, let’s talk” conference in the kitchen of their Sibley County farm home. He admits they were a bit uncomfortable in those first discussions. But the more they talked and studied, the more they felt they were heading in the right direction. “We started doing some serious looking at what we were doing to the soil structure of our farmland. We simply decided we were going the wrong way,” said Ryberg. Five years of continuous corn in 22inch rows, though they also grow sugar beets thus the 22-inch width, was their history lesson. Then a few rows of corn

that got planted into a small patch of grassland helped ease the decision. “An accident by chance opened our eyes. We had taken down a grove and Bryan Ryberg some pasture land. We planted through that piece and couldn’t figure out why the corn was so much taller in the pasture land than where we had been farming conventionally for 50 years,” said Ryberg. “We started thinking about what’s going on in these two environments and what the cost savings might be if we changed tillage systems. We were making lots of trips across our fields and just causing more compaction.” Here’s what the Rybergs were doing: running a Wishek Disc after a chopping corn head followed by a ripper to get a good black surface, both for their continuous corn fields and corn going to sugar beets. Then, before planting, a field cultivator to prepare a smooth,

level seed bed. “We’ve switched to a strip till, single pass machine called the Soil Warrior. Our total field hours went from 430 hours with two, 4-wheel drive tractors down to 210 hours with one 4-wheel drive tractor,” said Ryberg. “This rig makes the tilled strips plus applies fertilizer so essentially both jobs on one pass. And that’s it. Next spring we’re ready to plant.” And check the new fuel economy. “This fall we were using six-tenths of a gallon diesel fuel per acre compared with almost five gallons per acre with our conventional rigs,” said Ryberg. “That was both a tremendous surprise and recognition that we were making way too many trips across our fields.” New routine At Ryberg Farms, the yearly cropping program involves 2,200 acres continuous corn, 600 acres of sugar beets and 700 acres of soybeans. Soils are mostly silty clay loams kept well drained through an extensive pattern tiled system. The residue issue in 22-inch rows is not an issue on the soybean and beet ground, noted Ryberg. “Corn stalks however can be a challenge. The Warrior has a deep cog wheel that handles trash better and moves more dirt. The tillage action of this cog wheel mixes trash into the row center building an 8-inch wide and 3-to-4-inch tall berm in the process. Trash wheels on our planter do the fine tuning that might be needed,” he explained. Soil Warriors are made by Environmental Tillage Systems in Faribault, Minn. With a machine that both tills and fertilizes your soils, these rigs are $300,000 for the 24-row unit purchased by Ryberg Farms. “We did some research. Lots of brands in this strip till equipment but very few with 22-inch rows so this one seemed to be the Cadillac. The fact that it’s built in Minnesota we think is a plus too. Quick service and any questions readily answered,” said Ryberg. Going forward he estimates a $90,000 yearly savings in fuel, labor, and fertilizer costs, plus ongoing improvements in soil structure, which Ryberg says are priceless but vital to the future sustainability of row crop farming. The Ryberg’s Soil Warrior came with a fertilizer tank so feeding and tillage is a one-trip deal. They plant with either a 24-row or 36-row planter. They use an RTK power steering system and strip and plant between the old rows.
“It works like a charm,” said Ryberg. They did a trial run last spring with a leased Soil Warrior on 200 acres of sugarbeet stubble. This fall when strip tilling for next year’s corn they also applied between 50 and 70 pounds of urea in the strip along with variable rates of P and K ranging from 75 to 350 pounds per acre. Because their fields are mapped and soil tested, their Soil Warrior is set up to handle variable fertilizer applications on the go. Next spring when planting they’ll do a weed and feed program which includes 50 pounds of 28 percent N and Verdict herbicide to kick start the corn. Then they can side dress additional applications as needed. They’re not yet into variable rate populations, but it may be added to their agenda soon as they have the tools to go that route. With the need to trim input costs, variable rates on both fertilizer and seed are inevitable. Ryberg said he is intrigued with this new technology working its way into crop production. And he has two great guys on his crew that understand these electronic tools. “They set it up for me and I can then run it too but they are the head start guys on these new systems,” Ryberg said. The equipment lineup for Ryberg Farms is down to the Soil Warrior for tillage and fertilizer; two planters, a John Deere combine with 12-row head and only one 530 hp John Deere tractor. That sugar beet crop also needs a defoliator and 12-row lifter. What happens to the rest of the equipment? Some of it is already sold. “We have a disc ripper that we’ll hang on to because we also do some custom work. And we still have a field cultivator just in case,” noted Ryberg. Brian and Sandy Ryberg own the farming corporation which also includes commercial trucking. The same rigs haul beets each fall. They have two long-term guys that cover all the bases in this productive and efficient operation. “We feel good about this. We think we did it for all the right reasons, the most important being rebuilding our soils,” said Ryberg. “Yes, neighbors are watching and so are we! One of my biggest naysayers recently asked if we could do some strip tillage for him too.” Brian Ryberg was interviewed at the Conservation Tillage Conference, Dec. 15-16, in Willmar, Minn. ❖

Grain Outlook Crop report released
When talking to producers who farmed in the 1980s you’ll likely hear about: interest rates, low commodity prices, declining land values (resulting in some consolidation.) Consistent with agriculture’s cyclical nature, today we are again facing a compressed margin environment in grain and livestock markets. The difference is that many producers have learned from history and their debt-to-equity and debt -toassessed ratios are better than in previous market downturns. Agriculture is a commodity business and that means prices and returns are volatile. The crude oil market is a prime example of this, with prices around one third of what they were just a KURT LENSING year and a half ago. News of oil AgStar Assistant VP & company bankruptcies are Industry Specialist becoming somewhat common. Waite Park, Minn. Fortunately, at this point, we are not hearing much about a great many agricultural operations folding. However, when talking to area farmers, most tend to agree there is a storm brewing on some farms. Managing risk like crop inputs, commodity price swings, and financial or debt management continues to be essential for any successful farm. The excellent yields in the upper Midwest have helped hold balance sheets in the black and incomes from assuming large losses. This is not the case when you go to the eastern Corn Belt in states like Indiana and Ohio, where farmers there are dealing with below Actual Production History yields and significantly lower prices. Are we prepared for lower yields at today’s prices? For many the answer might be no. Farmers realize they cannot control prices. Some of the most interesting conversations See LENSING, pg. 16
Information in the above columns is the writer’s opinion. It is no way guaranteed and should not be interpreted as buy/sell advice. Futures trading always involves a certain degree of risk.
“Where Farm and Family Meet”
See NYSTROM, pg. 16
The holiday markets that seemed slow are now over and the volatility for the most part is back in the livestock markets. This is particularly true in the cattle complex and will likely continue for the foreseeable future. The hog appears to be a bit more benign but the volatility could increase in the weeks and months ahead for this market. It would appear that the recovery rally in the cattle market has come to an end after the first full week in January. During the recent recovery cash prices jumped as well as the cutout values and the futures prices. However, the first full week in January ended with the futures market posting a weekly reversal JOE TEALE and cash cattle trading lower Broker than the previous week. Great Plains Commodity Afton, Minn. An interesting fact that during this recovery that started just before the Christmas holiday, the cash price paid for cattle rallied over $17 per hundredweight and the beef cutout rallied over $40/cwt. in a very short period of time. The fact that the prices probably overextended on the downside, have now overcompensated on the upside. This still reflects the major problem affecting the cattle market, which is the battle between supply and demand. Obviously the supply of cattle is still a concern. However as reflected in the recent rally as the beef cutout rapidly moved higher the demand continued to shrink reflecting a slowing in demand at higher prices. With the competitive meats at much lower values on a pound-perpound basis, beef should continue to struggle until there is more parity in price. With a flaying economy worldwide, this does not bode well for demand for beef in the larger picture. See TEALE, pg. 16

The following market analysis is for the week ending Jan. 15. CORN — The highlight of the week was the release of the final 2014-15 crop report and the Grain Stocks as of Dec. 1 report. The report, while mostly neutral, brought buyers to the market to take profits on short-covering and kicked the market up a nickel at the close, although it traded as much as 12 cents higher during the session. Funds had been leaning heavily short into the report and therefore had room to cover shorts and drive prices higher. The numbers on their face were neutral. Growers did reward the upswing with some selling, but nothing that PHYLLIS NYSTROM would be considered overwhelmCHS Hedging Inc. St. Paul ing. The dollar was firmer for the week, limiting our competitiveness on the global scene; but sharply higher corn values in South America since the beginning of the month have strengthened to the point that U.S. corn from the Gulf and Pacific Northwest is now competitive in the February time slot. The Jan. 12 U.S. Department of Agriculture reports included final numbers for the 2015-16 crop as well as Grain Stocks as of Dec. 1. On the 2015-16 corn balance sheet, planted acres were cut 400,000 acres to 88 million acres, while harvested acres were left unchanged at 80.7 million acres. The yield was cut 0.9 bushels per acre to 168.4 bu./acre. Minnesota produced a record crop of 1.43 billion bushels with a record yield of 188 bu./acre. Production was down 53 million bushels to 13.6 billion bushels. Imports were raised 10 million, Food Seed and Industrial was

Soybeans rallied due to lower ending stocks NYSTROM, from pg. 15 reduced 10 million and exports were decreased 50 million bushels to 1.7 billion bushels. Ending stocks were up an insignificant 17 million bushels to 1.802 billion bushels compared to 1.731 billion bushels last year and the trade estimate of 1.743 billion bushels. The stocks to use ratio was up 0.2 percent to 13.3 percent and compared to last year’s 12.6 percent. The average on-farm prices fell a nickel on both ends to a range of $3.30-$3.90 per bushel. On the world scene, both Argentina and Brazil’s corn exports were raised by 0.5 million metric tons. Brazil’s corn crop was unchanged at 81.5 mmt and Argentina’s estimate was left at 25.6 mmt. South Africa’s corn crop was dropped 4 mmt to 8 mmt while their imports were increased from 0.2 mmt to 1.5 mmt due to their severe drought. World ending stocks were 208.9 mmt, lower than the 212.51 mmt trade forecast. U.S. corn stocks as of Dec. 1 were 11.212 billion bushels, very near the average trade estimate for 11.240 billion bushels. Of the stocks, 61 percent are on-farm and 49 percent off-farm. Weekly export sales in corn were at the very upper end of estimates at 26.3 million bushels, but we are still running well behind the pace we need to hit the new USDA objective of 1.7 billion bushels. Year-to-date commitments are running 25 percent behind last year when the USDA is projecting year on year exports to be down just 9 percent. We could still expect export reductions on subsequent crop reports. Argentina’s Buenos Aires Grains Exchange raised their estimate for corn acres this year from 7.04 million acres to 7.66 million acres, which is closer to the USDA prediction. Brazil is reportedly looking at Argentina for corn imports. Weekly ethanol production was the second highest ever at 295 million gallons per week in the week ending Jan. 8. Ethanol stocks for the week were their largest since February at 896 million gallons, up 10 million gallons from the previous week. Ethanol margins have slipped to their lowest since early 2014. China officially launched an investigation into
U.S. dried distillers grains imports citing anti-dumping and anti-subsidy violations. The investigation was expected and should already be factored into the market. The investigation may last a year or more. The weekly Commitment of Traders report showed funds increased their net short position as of Jan. 12, which coincided with the crop report. They were carrying the second largest net short since 2006. Postreport, fund buying was noted. SOYBEANS — Soybeans staged the largest rally in ag commodities this week in response to the USDA numbers on Jan. 12. Prior to the report, soybeans were put on the defensive when China’s stock market once again experienced a sharp setback of 3.55 percent to begin the week. Overall, by the end of the week the Shanghai Composite Index is down 18 percent year to date! A key reversal higher in the March soybean contract on report day, when the report was not as bearish as anticipated, set the stage for further strength later in the week. The main feature from the crop report was the ending stocks number of 440 million when the trade was anticipating ending stocks of 468 million bushels. However, remember the 440 million number is still over twice last year’s 191 million bushel carryout and South America is on track for record soybean production. Let’s recap the monthly USDA crop report: planted acres were down 0.5 million to 82.7 million acres, harvested acres were cut 0.6 million to 81.8 million acres, and the yield was decreased by 0.3 bu./acre to 48 bu./acre. The 48 bu./acre yield is still a record. Production was subsequently cut 51 million bushels to 3.93 billion bushels. The production number is still a record, surpassing last year’s production by a scant 3 million bushels. Minnesota set a record yield for the state with 50 bu./acre. On the usage side, exports declined 25 million to 1.69 billion bushels and residual fell 2 million to 39 million bushels. Ending stocks were down 25 million bushels to 440 million bushels and compare to last year’s 191 million bushels, but under the 470 million bushel trade estimate. The stocks-to-use ratio dropped from 12.4 percent last month to 11.9 percent and is sharply higher than last year’s 4.9 percent. The average on-farm

Lock in costs for variables for 2017 LENSING, from pg. 15 with farmers revolve around what farmers are doing that they can control. Many growers have already locked in variables like rent, seed, and fertilizer. Have you thought about locking in inputs for the 2017 crop year and beyond, or talked to a grain marketing advisor? If you have multiple year land rent contracts have you considered securing a percent of other costs; for example diesel fuel? If you are only locking in land rents and no other inputs or outputs you are betting land rents will go up, commodity prices will go up, or non-land inputs will come down. In the end, some of the best inventions were the result of necessity. The market will continue to leave opportunities for the most efficient or higher
net margin producers. Hopefully, we have, as an industry, learned from previous downturns in livestock and grain industries. At AgStar, we’re continually analyzing the past to help farmers better navigate through current challenges. It’s never been more important to partner with business advisors who have the experience and expertise to guide you in growing your operation and achieving your goals. price was lowered by a dime on each end to a range of $8.05-$9.55 per bushel. U.S. soybean stocks as of Dec. 1 were close to expectations at 2.715 billion bushels versus estimates for 2.720 billion bushels. Of the stocks, 48.2 percent are being held on-farm and 51.8 percent off-farm, very similar to last year’s percentages. World carryout was 79.3 mmt, below the 82.57 mmt trade estimate. Both Argentina and Brazil’s soybean production outlooks were unchanged at 57 mmt and 100 mmt respectively. Safras is forecasting Brazil’s soybean crop at 99.8 mmt compared to the USDA’s 100 mmt figure. Conab is pegging the crop at 102.1 mmt. In general, projections for Brazil’s bean crop range from 97.5 to 103 mmt. Weather in both Argentina and Brazil has been generally favorable for crops. The one caveat may be some delayed soybean harvesting in Brazil due to moisture. The U.S. Climate Prediction Center is giving the chances of La Niña developing in the United States June-August at 22 percent, with chances rising to 33 percent for July-September and 40 percent for August-October period. La Niña favors warm and dry Midwest conditions. The December NOPA Crush Report was published this week indicating 157.7 million soybeans were processed, in-line with the 157.8 million bushel estimate. The December 2014 crush was 165.4 million bushels. Oil stocks were a supportive force to end of week trading when they came in at 1.481 billion pounds when the pre-report estimate was 1.529 billion pounds. Last year, oil stocks were 1.067 billion pounds. Weak crush margins have increased talk about processors reducing crush rates. ❖
Hog market turning corner TEALE, from pg. 15 Producers should be cognizant of these market conditions and protect inventories as needed. The hog market has quietly begun to turn the corner as prices both in cash and futures have advanced in recent weeks. It would appear that the value of pork vs. the other competitive meats has been the driver behind the price advance. Although the advance has not been very sharp, it is showing stability in the overall hog market. An example is the pork cutout has remained nearly unchanged over the past month and cash hog prices have increased slightly over that same period. It seems apparent that at the retail level pork prices have captured the public interest because of the value in comparison to the other sources of protein. Based upon recent USDA reports, hog numbers are adequate to meet this rising demand for pork, which should help to stabilize the hog market. The only concern would be the poor economic outlook for 2016. This could have a bearing on future hog prices which could be detrimental to any further advancement in prices. Therefore producers should continue to monitor market conditions and protect inventories as warranted. ❖

The last General CRP sign-up period was in 2013. There appears to be more interest in the CRP enrollment in 2016, due to the current lower crop prices and reduced farm profitability. Currently, there are over 630,000 CRP contracts in place on over 350,000 farms, with just over 23.4 million

The CRP program was developed as part of the 1985 farm bill and was established by USDA on Dec. 23, 1985. CRP has been the largest and most important conservation program in the United States since that time. CRP continues to

and practices on CRP acres. • FSA will rank all bid offers for the General CRP enrollment on the basis of the Environmental Benefits Index. The EBI is used to target the most environmentally sensitive land with the accepted CRP enrollment bids. Following are the EBI factors used by FSA to evaluate CRP contract offers: • Water quality benefits from reduced erosion, runoff, and leaching. • Wildlife habitat benefits from land covers on CRP contract acreage. • On-farm benefits from reduced soil erosion. • Air quality benefits from reduced wind erosion. • Benefits that will likely endure beyond the CRP contract period. • Cost per acre for the CRP rental contract. The last General CRP sign-up was in 2013, when a total of 1,271 CRP bids
were submitted in Minnesota, and 985 bids were accepted. There were 25,609 total acres in Minnesota accepted under the 2013 General CRP sign-up. As of November 2015, there were a total of 54,476 CRP contracts in place in Minnesota, with a total of just over 1.1 million acres. Just over 530,000 acres are under a General CRP contract, and slightly over 582,000 acres were under a continuous CRP contract. USDA adjusts the maximum annual CRP rental rates for Continuous CRP sign-up each year on a county-bycounty basis, which are also used as the maximum CRP rates for General CRP enrollment period in a given year. The maximum rental rates are based on the relative productivity of the soils within each county, as well as on the average dry land cash rental rate for each county, based on the National Agriculture Statistics Service annual land rental analysis.

Buffer strips qualify for CRP;contact your SWCD office THIESSE, from pg. 19 Landowners are provided the maximum allowable CRP rental rate prior to making a decision to submit a General CRP bid. Landowners and producers may offer land for a potential General CRP contract at the maximum CRP rental rate, or may choose to lower the rental rate that is offered. Lowering the rental rate in the CRP bid below the maximum allowable rental rate may increase the likelihood of acceptance of the CRP offering, since land cost is one of the factors considered by USDA in approving CRP contracts. The Table compares the average per acre CRP bid accepted in the 2013 General CRP sign-up to the average 2014 cash rental rate for crop land (based on University of Minnesota data) for several counties across Minnesota. For more information on General
CRP sign-up or Continuous CRP enrollment, contact your local FSA Office, or go to the USDA CRP web site: http://www.fsa.usda.gov/crp. Impact of new buffer law In 2015, a new buffer law was initiated in Minnesota. The law calls for buffer strips of a minimum of 16.5 feet along all public ditches, which includes most agriculture drainage ditches in the state, as well as buffer areas that average 50 feet near public waters, such as rivers. Buffer strips generally qualify under both the General and Continuous CRP programs, which would allow producers to receive some compensation for up to 15 years on the acres that are taken out of production to implement buffer strips. Many landowners may prefer to enroll in the Continuous CRP program, since no bidding process would be involved. The CREP program may also

Producers should be aware that the CRP program requires buffer strips to be a minimum of 30 feet in width, which exceeds the minimum 16.5 foot requirement under the law for many producers with agricultural drainage ditches. Livestock producers should also be aware that haying and grazing

MN AG EXPO 2016, coordinated by the Minnesota Corn Growers and Minnesota Soybean Growers, is set for Jan. 27-28 at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato. The event is free to attend and features a trade show with nearly 100 exhibitors, educational sessions focused on issues that directly impact Minnesota farmers, networking opportunities, fundraisers, leading agriculture researchers, lively panel discussions and evening entertainment. “If you haven’t been to EXPO before, this is the year to check it out,” said Noah Hultgren, president of the Minnesota Corn Growers Association and a farmer in Raymond, Minn. “We’ve maintained all of the things that make EXPO great and added a few new items to the agenda to make it an even better event.” One of those new items includes panel discussions led by Lynn Kettelsen of the Linder Farm Network and Don Wick of the Red River Farm Network. One panel will focus on the future of agriculture policy in Minnesota and features former speaker of the house Kurt Zellers and political analyst Blois Olson. The other panel will cover how farmers can become better advocates for ag. It will feature Greg Peterson, whose “I’m farming and I grow it” and other YouTube videos have generated more than 37 million views. Other panelists include former National Corn Growers president Pam Johnson and David Carnes, founder and CEO of ArcStone, a digital agency that helps businesses and nonprofits tell their stories. Breakout sessions will focus on Minnesota’s new buffer strip law, crop weather post-El Nino and suc-

For all these years I could have blamed it on the fact that I had more children to clean up after than she did, or I could blame it on the farm. My sister — an immaculate urban housekeeper — used to secretly leave me notes in the dusty furniture and wait to see how long it took me to find TABLE TALK them. For her it wasn’t a matter By Karen Schwaller of whether or not she would find the dust; it was simply of matter of where to write the note. My housekeeping skills were targeted one day when our (then) elementary-school-aged daughter asked me what that yellow can was in the cupboard, as she pointed to the furniture polish. Apparently she had never seen me use it. Oh, how ashamed my mother would be. I made up for my lack of dusting skills by using my time to hang our laundry out in that great-smelling country air. That is, when it wasn’t manure hauling day. Yeesh. I think my nose hairs have all grown back in over the years. Now we live in a different home and live on the north side of a gravel road. That means when people drive past the place, the prevailing southwest winds blow the road dirt right into the yard. If conditions mimic the Sahara and a Siberian-like wind is blowing, it looks like the Dust Bowl days here at home. Amana’s Living History Farms has nothing on us. For us, corn chopping and fall harvest mark the end of open-window season. If we opened the windows during that time we could be buried alive right in our own home. And as for drying the clothes these days, they don’t see a clothesline any more than my husband sees the dentist. The gas company must love our prevailing winds and dusty gravel roads. At our previous home it was birds with bowel issues that gave me the most angst about hanging clothes out to dry. I guess manure of all kinds will find its way onto farm clothing. Every year farm women can resolve to stay on top of the house cleaning by doing a little bit every day, but it lasts until her husband needs her help outside. Often, by the time she comes back in she’s an accomplice to the dirty crime that is already well underway. But having a spotless house isn’t necessarily at the top of her list either, because by helping on the farm, she’s contributing not only to the family business, but to something greater — she’s helping to ensure that the farm will continue on. So she resolves all year that she’ll clean the house when she has the time. After all, it’s the world’s next oldest profession ... and boy is it a dirty one. Especially on the farm. Karen Schwaller brings “Table Talk” to The Land from her home near Milford, Iowa. She can be reached at kschwaller@evertek.net. ❖

Snow day S
kiers and snowboarders of all ages can be found enjoying a winter day at Mount Kato off Highway 66 in Mankato, Minn. The family friendly ski hill is a favorite among the local junior high set. Younger kids bomb down the hill and little ones sometimes get a hand with their mittens from mom. Many a parent can be seen skiing with a new skier as they guide them down the bunny hill. Beginners from young to old can attend ski school to get started. It’s fun and safe! The more daring skiers and boarders hit the runs with moguls and jumps. A terrain park has been created for boarders to do tricks. If the snow is scarce from Mother Nature, Mount Kato makes their own. You really can ski great snow at Mount Kato. Mount Kato is open for skiing and snowboarding daily. Snow tubing is available on the weekends. Visit www.mountkato.com for the snow report, hours and more. ❖
