Butter cow history In 1911 J.K. Daniels sculpted the Fair's first butter cow and was succeeded by J.E. Wallace of Florida. In 1957 Earl Frank Dutt of Illinois took over the sculpting duties.

Norma “Duffy” Lyon of Toledo, Iowa, began sculpting in 1960, becoming the fourth person and first woman to sculpt the Fair's butter beauties. Lyon passed away in June of 2011.

In 2006, after 15 years of apprenticing with Duffy, Sarah Pratt of West Des Moines became the Fair's fifth butter sculptor.

The Butter Cow starts with a wood, metal, wire and steel mesh frame and about 600 pounds of low moisture, pure cream Iowa butter. Once inside the 40-degree cooler, layers of butter are applied until a life-size butter cow emerges, measuring about 5.5 foot high and 8 foot long.

While a real dairy cow weighs more than 1,000 pounds, a 600 pound butter cow would butter 19,200 slices of toast and take an average person two lifetimes to consume. Much of the butter is recycled and reused for up to 10 years.

John Deere Agriculture Building — Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Agriculture Building, generally shortened to the Ag Building, is home to Iowa’s finest displays of agricultural commodities, including prize-winning floriculture, jumbo veggies and an apiary exhibit. Constructed in 1904, the Ag Building was one of the first permanent buildings on the Fairgrounds. It is one of the best remaining examples of exposition-style architecture in the world, but most people know it best as the home of the world-famous Butter Cow. Fairgoers say no trip to the Fair is complete until you’ve seen it!

Just to the west, the Discovery Gardens are a beautiful spot to rest. See a stunning variety of plants and is maintained by the Polk County Master Gardeners. Kids love running through the vine-covered tunnel.

Little Hands on the Farm — Open 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., located north of the Animal Learning Center If you’re with young kids, don’t miss Little Hands on the Farm where kids ages 2-10 can help with “chores” on the farm and earn play money to spend at the market.

AgVenture Discovery Trail — Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Try out the AgVenture Discovery Trail, an ag-themed scavenger hunt that leads kids through the Fairgrounds as they learn about livestock, wind energy, crops and more. Stop at six of the 11 stops, then turn your map in for a prize!

Young Fairgoers can get started by picking up a lanyard and a map at any of the 11 Information Booths, the USDA booth in the Ag Building or at the Iowa

Minnesota State Fair ’15 What began in 1854 as a territorial fair to highlight agriculture and encourage farming in the region became the Minnesota State Fair in 1859, a year after Minnesota was granted statehood.

Today, often referred to as The Great Minnesota Get-Together, the annual Minnesota State Fair is one of the most poplular tourist destinations in the region. The fair attracts 1.8 million guests annually.

The 2015 Minnesota State Fair is Aug. 27 to Sept. 7.

More than 450 foods are available at 300 food concessions. Deep-fried candy bars, hot dish, walleye and pork chops are some of the 60 plus foods-on-a-stick at the Fairgrounds.

The Mighty Midway features carnival rides with the most extreme thrill rides at Adventure Park. The Space Tower, Haunted House, Ye Old Mill, River Raft Ride, Sky Ride and Sky Glider are per-

manent attractions and State Fair traditions.

Special exhibits include the CHS Miracle of Birth Center, where nearly 200 calves, lambs and piglets are born during the fair’s 12-day run.

Children can learn about the agriculture process at Little Farm Hands, an interactive farm exhibit.

Don’t miss the Dairy Building where Princess Kay and her court have their likeness carved into a 90-pound block of butter each day at the fair.

More than 6,500 items are displayed in the Creative Activities department’s exhibition of Minnesota’s finest needlework, handcrafts, baking and canning.

Honey, flowers, giant vegetables, crop and seed art, beer and fruit are showcased in the Agriculture Horticulture Building.
