2013 FARMFEST ANNUAL
“Where Farm and Family Meet”
Number of exhibitors make Farmfest fourth biggest in U.S.
By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer Inevitably farm shows get down to “bragging rights.” And invariably that relates to how many people attend a particular event, as well as how many exhibitors shows their wares. Farmfest, doing its 23rd annual show, is now the fourth largest agricultural show in the country. Farm Progress Shows, the biggest in America, is at Decatur, Ill., this year, so attendance at Farmfest is likely to swell even more. Farmfest 2013 is Aug. 6-8 at the Gilfillan Estate in Redwood County, Minn. “We’re excited. We’re very pleased with the growing number of exhibitors that are now buying into Farmfest. And our farm attendance has been terrific. We modestly call this the biggest three-day ‘fun at the farm’ conference in America,” said
Ray Bianchi, vice president of Cygnus Expositions, the firm that conducts farm shows in Minnesota, South Dakota, Texas and Illinois. New at Farmfest this year is a new Wicks building that replaces the former “Forum Tent.” “This new center will be the location for all the education forums plus Lynn Ketelsen’s (Linder Farm Network) Noon Time Jamboree radio shows. It’s a big red building right in the middle of our grounds,” Bianchi said. This new facility will be climatized so that winter events can also be staged on the Farmfest grounds. Farmfest is “sold out” in terms of additional space for additional exhibitors. Bianchi said they are 120 percent sold out, meaning there is waiting list of exhibitors. The daily lineup of forum speakers,

Farm bill forum expected to draw national crowd
FARMFEST, from pg. 2F coordinated by Kent Thiesse of MinnStar Bank in Lake Crystal, Minn., has even more variety for 2013, Bianchi said. For example the opening session on Aug. 6, is on grain marketing. In view of concerning questions about the accuracy of U.S. Department of Agriculture projections for the 2013 crops, this will be a lively session. (See Page 22F for a schedule of forums.) “Reaching an Endpoint on a New Farm Bill” on Aug. 6 continues the unrest in agriculture with a panel discussion about the pending new farm bill. Panel members include U.S. Reps. Collin Peterson and Tim Walz, Roger Johnson of the National Farmers Union, Dale Moore of American Farm Bureau Federation and Bob Worth, Minnesota grower and vice president of the American Soybean Association. Bianchi said national media coverage plus all the Twin Cities TV channels will be on deck. “So this should be a very exciting session.” The afternoon forum might also be filled with verbal fisticuffs since that session focuses on renewable energy policies currently in place in America and new proposals to expand the role of renewable energy in America, and perhaps elsewhere. U.S. Sen. Al Franken will provide major insights from a governmental point of view. At 3 p.m. on Aug. 6 the interest and intensity is not likely to lessen, with the forum “Enhancing Ag Production and Water Quality with Managed Drainage Systems.” Energy issues even continue into the evening of that first day with a biodiesel tractor pull scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at the Redwood County Fairgrounds. The 10: 30 a.m. forum on Day 2 will deal with agriculture from a media perspective. Tom Rothman, former farm radio man and now director of ag stakeholder outreach of the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, will moderate this forum. The overriding question: Is agriculture getting a fair break in the media? That afternoon’s forum will look at “How We Raise Our Livestock — Who Should Decide.” Speakers from pork, beef, poultry and milk producer groups will offer their insight. What’s ahead for students majoring in agriculture? An Aug. 8 session will present the nuts and bolts of just how big a future is ahead for students getting into agriculture. At 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8, the Minnesota Farm Families of the Year will be honored. Technology nerds should have a blast at this year’s Farmfest. Bianchi said more than 30 exhibitors will be putting the focus on technology. All told over 1.3 million square feet of exhibit space will be on parade. FARMFEST, from pg. 4F launch of new tractor lines. Cargill is back with a technology-oriented exhibit on how they handle grain throughout the food chain pipeline, especially into overseas markets. Tickets are $6, parking is free and visitors are offered trailer rides from their car to one of the entrance gates. There are also plenty of choices of food, for when the hunger pangs just can’t be held off any longer. The Minnesota State Fair is rightly called the Great Minnesota Get-Together, but for an up-close look at agriculture, Farmfest is indeed King of the Hill. ❖

Gilfillan and Farmfest: the ideal pair C.O. died in 1962 at the age of 90. When Anna died in 1990 at the age of 95, her will bequeathed the Gilfillan farm site to the Redwood County Historical Society in honor of C.O. to preserve the history of the estate and the surrounding area. The will stipulated that the history should be available to the public, so the historical society began conducting tours in 1993. A number of volunteers organized the Friends of Gilfillan, a group that oversees maintenance and tours as well as private and public events. Ten years after C.O.’s death when Vernon Center, Minn., hosted the world plowing contest, the seeds of Farmfest were planted. In 1977, Marlyn Buss bought Farmfest’s name and records after the organization went bankrupt. In 1982, he organized a Farmfest on his dad’s farm east of Lake Crystal, Minn. The summer event stayed there for eight years

THE LAND — 2013 FARMFEST ANNUAL
By CAROLYN VAN LOH The Land Correspondent The story of Farmfest’s home at the Gilfillan Estate began in 1882 when Charles D. (C.D.) Gilfillan invested in 13,000 acres west of Morgan, Minn. Born in New Hartford, N.Y., in 1831, C.D. was a prosperous St. Paul businessman, attorney and political leader. C.D.’s legacy to St. Paul was his leadership and financial support in building the city’s first underground water system. His fiscal responsibilities included 37 years on the board of directors of First National Bank, 17 years as the bank’s vice president and founder of the First Trust Co. of St. Paul. Charles O. (C.O.) Gilfillan succeeded his father in managing the Redwood County farm system after the elder Gilfillan’s death in 1902 at the age of 71. He and his wife, Anna, amassed a fortune by building on the foundation laid by C.D., but they generously gave of their resources to area communities for a hospital, park or museum.

GILFILLAN, from pg. 31F before moving to the Austin, Minn., area for four years. Location and expenses presented major challenges for Farmfest. The site was “bad from the start,” Buss said. After an interview by Brian Langeland of Red-
wood Falls KGLR radio the last day of Farmfest in 1992, the two men were discussing the future of the show. Marlyn mentioned he was looking for a new location. “I asked him if he had ever considered the Redwood Falls area because it was between the top two corn and soybean producing counties of Minnesota

(Redwood and Renville counties),” Langeland said. The following week Langeland and radio station manager Mike Neudecker guided Buss on a tour of the area. They also introduced him to Pete Iverson of the Redwood Area Development Corp. He connected Buss with the Gilfillan Estate. “Pete really stepped forward and helped us get established,” said Buss, who continued ownership for four years. The arrival of Farmfest in 1993 motivated Friends of Gilfillan volunteers to erect a pavilion to serve homemade ice cream made the old-fashioned handcrank way. Income from sales of the refreshing summer treat and hot lunches goes back into improvements of the grounds and buildings which provide a tranquil setting for weddings, family reunions and public events. A two-cylinder engine club arranges for historical exhibits and demonstrations during the three-day farm show. Billed as one of the largest agricultural events in the world, Farmfest currently functions under IDEAg, which also manages similar events in South Dakota, Texas and Illinois. ❖

This year, 75 families from throughout Minnesota will be honored as a 2013 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota. The families will be recognized in ceremonies set for 1:30 to 3 p.m. Aug. 8 at the annual Minnesota Farmfest near Redwood Falls. Local Extension committees chose the families for demonstrating commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture. The families represent each county participating in the program. “Farm families and agriculture are a major driver of Minnesota’s economy and the vitality of Minnesota’s rural communities,” said Bev Durgan, dean of University of Minnesota Extension. “The University of Minnesota is proud to recognize these outstanding families for their contributions to agriculture and their communities.” A sampling of families and the breadth of their contributions to agriculture follows, as does a complete list. AMBASSADORS, from pg. 36F with hopes to continually improve meat quality and genetics. Thurston believes the ambassador program is a great way to become a leader and speak out about the swine industry. She would like to learn more and share her knowledge with the public by being the state Pork Industry Ambassador. “I think as producers, we need the public to trust what we are doing and why we are doing it,” Thurston said. “It is important for producers to take time to speak with the public about common practices used on farms.” Thurston is active in 4-H, specifically in the swine project. She loves showing her pigs at the county and state level. She takes pride in educating the fairgoers when she is there. “I usually stand by my pigs and ask anybody walking by if they have any questions.” She thinks education is the single most important thing to create trust between producer and consumer. Brett Stevermer, Faribault County Brett Stevermer would like to be the state Pork Industry Ambassador, because he wants to promote an industry that has been part of his life since day one. He believes it would be a great way for him to be involved not only in the community he grew up in, but in his home state as well. “I would have a positive attitude as the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador. I will work hard and be dedicated to this great industry,” Stevermer said. Stevermer will be attending the University of Minnesota in the fall, majoring in engineering. He has a strong passion for automobiles and an interest in making vehicles more efficient. He would like to make technology more accessible to those living in a rural community. Stevermer has held many leadership positions and part-time jobs that have helped him obtain many beneficial skills. He helps out at home on the farm and has learned many valuable lessons with that, as well as being a member of 4-H, band, choir, student government and National Honor Society. “These experiences have taught me commitment and perseverance. I’ve learned the importance of time management and sticking to my word,” Stevermer said. Jacob Sorenson, Freeborn County Jacob Sorenson believes he would be a good Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because he has a true passion for the swine industry. He enjoys talking to consumers and producers about the industry and would like to better educate the public. Sorenson plans to attend South Dakota State University in the fall as an agriculture system technology student. He wants to learn more about business management, economic management, precision farming, marketing and agriculture engineering. “My future excites me, there are many opportunities and careers available in agriculture,” Sorenson said. Animal care is of the utmost importance to Sorenson, and he believes that this will solve a lot of issues within the industry. Having zero-tolerance for inhumane treatment of pigs will build consumer trust.

He has a passion for the industry and would like to continue being involved. “Attending the National FFA Convention and the National 4-H Dairy Conference has had a great impact on me and has really encouraged me to pursue a career in the agricultural industry,” Praus said. Praus would like to be the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because he thinks that pig farmers have a story to tell about current production practices and animal care. “I think that people should know where their food comes from and know how it is responsibly raised,” Praus said. Praus has worked at Rostad Farms for four years. At the farm, he helps with the dairy, custom hog finishing and crop farming. This job has helped him appreciate agriculture even more, as well as teach him valuable skills, such as: hard work, organization and public relations. He enjoys discussing the issues within the industry and what producers are doing to fix them. Munstertieger will be sophomore at the University of Minnesota, where he studies animal science with an emphasis in swine and beef production and minors in agronomy and applied economics. He is active and has held leadership positions in many clubs, including the Block and Bridle Club, Gopher Dairy Club and Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity. In the fall, Munstertieger will be a part of the livestock judging team at the university. He feels this will provide him many opportunities to network and share his knowledge. “I will be able to travel across the country and meet and network with numerous producers that excel at what they do,” Munstertieger said. “Working as the U of M Swine Barn manager and at the U of M Meat Lab has helped me expand my knowledge of

the industry,” he said. He plans to continue his work at the Swine Barn and believes it will continue to help him learn new things about the industry every day. Tony Munstertieger, Kanabec County Tony Munstertieger plans to attend SDSU in the fall and pursue a degree in animal science and agricultural business. He wants to be a member of the general livestock judging team, Swine Club and the Block and Bridle Club. Munstertieger believes the biggest concern in the swine industry is the high corn prices and the low hog prices. “It may be difficult to change this in the near future, but I would like to learn the most effective way to help producers,” he said. Munstertieger would like to be the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador so that he can learn more about the industry and become proactive in combating the issues the industry faces. He has been active in 4-H, FFA and the general livestock judging team. He believes these programs have impacted him the most and have helped him get to where he is today. “Living on a farm
has helped me learn a lot about the importance of working hard,” he said. Miranda Schwartz, Le Sueur County Miranda Schwartz plans to attend the University of Minnesota to study agricultural education. She would like to be the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because she could educate people in Minnesota about the importance of pork and the farmers who are producing it. Schwartz believes the pork industry struggles with the issue of consumer misconceptions. She believes talking to children at school is important, so that they learn about animals and agriculture while they are young. This will help minimize the misconceptions they have in their adult life. Being in 4-H and working on the farm with her father has had the greatest impact on her life. She has learned a lot about agriculture, especially the pork and crop industries. This has helped her expand her knowledge and share her passion with others. “I am able to impact the youth in my club and county, giving them the guidSee AMBASSADORS, pg. 39F

into my future career,” Wagener said. Dillon Welter, Olmsted County Dillon Welter plans to attend SDSU in the fall majoring in agricultural systems technology. Welter believes his options will be wide open for a career when he graduates, because technology is always changing and improving. He wants to become active in the Swine Club, Block and Bridle Club and many other campus activities. One issue in the pork industry is consumer confidence and trust. Welter believes that consumers do not like when they do not know where their food is coming from. He has helped with the effort to improve confidence in consumers by handing out samples in grocery stores, and having conversations with people. He thinks this is a great way to gain trust and get consumers to consume more pork. Raising and showing pigs at the county and state level have been Welter’s favorite part of being in the swine industry. He has enjoyed being able to raise all of his own show pigs, and it has taught him a lot about responsibility. When it is time to show, he gets to see that all of his hard work paid off. In high school, Welter was an active member of his FFA chapter, 4-H club, soccer, golf, band, choir, National Honor Society, BPA, pork producers and Farm Bureau. He also took part in many community and leadership activities. Jaden Carlson, Pipestone County Jaden Carlson would enjoy being the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because she has been active in the agricultural industry. Over the years, she has acquired a passion for the swine industry and would like to spread a positive light and communicate to the public about this great industry. “I know how to talk to consumers and spread a positive message to consumers,” Carlson said. Carlson feels that one of the difficulties that the industry has encountered is antibiotic use. “Educating consumers about the on-farm practices we have is going to help deal with this issue,” she said. She enjoys working with consumers to develop an understanding of how pork is raised. Carlson is a student at North Dakota State University, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. Upon graduation, she will con-
Erin Wicker, Stearns County 39 Erin Wicker would like to be the F Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because she has passion for agriculture and the swine industry. She likes to take on leadership opportunities where she can express her passion and share her knowledge. “It would be an honor to represent porkproducing families in Minnesota,” Wicker said. She believes that there is a large disconnection between the farmer and the consumer. If this problem is not addressed, it will only continue to get worse. “Encouraging agricultural education in schools would have a positive impact in bridging the gap between producers and consumers,” Wicker said. At a young age, Wicker started working on her family farm, where she learned many skills and developed her passion for agriculture and swine. She has learned the value of hard work and honesty, as well as the importance of agriculture. Wicker attends SDSU. She is double majoring in animal science and agricultural education, with an emphasis in leadership. Later, she plans to continue her education to become a veterinarian that focuses specifically on swine. ❖

AMBASSADORS, from pg. 38F ance and support so that they grow into people who are passionate about agriculture,” Schwartz said. Levi Becker, Martin County Levi Becker would like to be the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because pigs have always been a part of his life. He has grown up around pigs and has learned a lot over the years from his family. He feels confident that he would be able to promote and share his knowledge with consumers. Becker is the fourth generation on his family farm. When he completes school he wants to return to the family farm to work alongside his dad, uncle and grandpa. “I look forward to following the footsteps of my family because they have taught me a lot of what I know,” he said. Educating the future generations and those removed from farms is one of the biggest struggles the pork industry faces. Many people do not understand why farms do what they do. “Encouraging and supporting agricultural classes in school, FFA and 4H will be most valuable in the future,” Becker said. Becker was active in 4-H, FFA, baseball, basketball and football in high school. He also helps out on the farm. Emily Wagener, Martin County Emily Wagener will be a senior at Fairmont High School. She is active in her school and community and is a member of FFA and 4-H. These organizations have helped her find her passion for agriculture and the swine industry. Wagener would like to be the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador because she likes to talk with people and promote the pork industry. Wagener believes there are a lot of positive aspects of agriculture that need to be shared. One of the issues that Wagener believes the swine industry is facing is the price of feed. In order to reduce some costs on the farm, Wagener suggests a switch to wet-dry feeders to improve feed efficiency. This is going to be vital this year in Minnesota, due to the weather that we have had. 4-H has had a great impact on Wagener that will be helpful for her future. “Twelve years ago when I showed at my first livestock show, I knew it was something I really loved and was passionate about. This has given me a passion that I will carry
tinue her education to pursue a master’s and doctorate in microbiology. She hopes to operate her own business in animal vaccination research and development one day. Richard Breeggemann, Scott County Richard Breeggemann is attending South Central College in North Mankato, Minn., where he is majoring in agronomy. After his two years at SCC he plans to attend the University of Minnesota to pursue a degree in plant science. He hopes to be involved in agronomy after he is done with school. “I would like to be the Minnesota Pork Industry Ambassador so I can be an advocate for Minnesota pork farms,” Breeggemann said. “I realize how important it is that consumers know the many benefits of pork.” One of the issues that the swine industry faces is the use of pork in school lunches, he said. He believes that we need to work to get pork back into school lunch programs because it is a lean protein that is healthy for children to consume. Breeggemann has been involved in 4-H, FFA, football and church festival. In college he is active in Scott County Pork Producer’s Burger Stand and Post Ag Secondary where he promotes agriculture to the local community.
