Top producing co-ops make list

The National Cooperative Bank, known for providing banking solutions tailored to meet the needs of cooperatives nationwide, released its annual NCB Co-op 100, listing the nation’s top 100 revenue-earning cooperative businesses.

In 2012, these businesses posted revenue totaling $226.4 billion, a 5-percent increase from 2011. The NCB Co-op 100 still remains the only annual report of its kind to track the profits and success of cooperative businesses in the United States.

“The NCB Co-op 100 is a great reminder of the substantial impact and important role cooperative businesses play in our national economy across every sector. As we continue to see improvements in the market, there is an increase in the formation of new cooperatives in urban, suburban and rural setting — offering competitive goods and services to meet the needs of these communities,” said Charles E. Did his holdout for a sugar program mean the Speaker would fight the White House to include sugar in the farm bill?

No, said Foley; he had not raised the issue with the Speaker.

Wow. Wasn’t this more and worse trouble for an already troubled farm bill?

Maybe, but eastern Washington farmers need a sugar program and so does the nation, he explained in a firm voice with eyes locked on me.

Foley was in Kansas City to speak to a big pork producers meeting; I was there to cover it. I ran into him pacing beneath the grandstands while waiting to go onstage to explain the Washington, D.C., sausage machine to folks who loved sausag8e, knew machinery but distrusted Washington.

growth and expansion of these businesses, while also deploying hundreds of millions of dollars to support underserved communities and cooperative expansion initiatives. The NCB and other cooperatives named on the NCB Co-op 100 are continually hard at work on getting the message out on the advantages of member-owned organizations.

Cooperatives exist in a cross-section of sectors, including agriculture, grocery, hardware and lumber, finance, energy and communications, housing, and recreation, among others. These cooperatives provide over 2 million jobs and create more than $75 billion in annual wages with revenue of nearly $650 billion.

Although similar to other business models, a cooperative has several unique features. It is owned and controlled by its members who have joined together to use the cooperative’s goods, services and facilities. A board of directors, elected by the membership, sets the cooperative’s policies and procedures. By pooling resources, members can leverage their shared power to buy, sell, market, or bargain as one group, achieving economies of scale and sharing in any profits generated.

In addition, communities benefit both socially and fiscally by the cooperatives’ ability to access and deliver goods and services from across the nation.

Foley, a tall, gray-haired man with warm eyes, stayed true to his word; he only voted for the compromise 1981 farm bill after it included a new sugar price support program. The bill passed the House on a 205-203 vote with his vote the deciding difference.

More than 30 years later, it’s still the law — surprise — the world is still around, too. So is a U.S. sweetener sector. In fact, Foley’s holdout for sugar supports also provided a price umbrella for the corn sweetener industry to blossom, then bloom.

Foley rose to become Speaker in 1989, then, five years later, was swept out of office with the Gingrich tide. On Oct. 19, he died, in Washington, D.C. He was 84.

In his last act as Speaker, on Nov. 29, 1984, Foley handed his gavel over to his long-time political foe but great friend, Robert Michel, the retiring Republican

leader, so Michel could command the House just once in his long legislative career. It was the first time a Republican held the Speaker’s dais in 40 years.

Think any of this could occur in Congress today without more of the endless babbling demagogy that has trapped the 2012, notvery-good farm bill in the House for two years?

Not a chance.

High-moisture corn leads to Lp supply issue

Bob Zelenka Zelenka, Minnesota Feed & Grain Association executive director, said some elevators have simply had to shut down. Some cooperatives, even some large acreage corn growers with big dryers on their own farms, are now dispatching semi rigs to Lp terminals in other states.

“We’re hearing reports of Lp gas truckers waiting in line up to 10 hours at depots to refill their rigs.

It’s so bad that even our Minnesota Lp suppliers are encouraging their customers to source Lp terminals in other states,” Zelenka said.

To assist truckers, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton on Oct. 24 issued an emergency executive order which provides relief from state regulations pertaining to hours “behind the wheel” if/when extra effort is needed in the transporting of propane and anhydrous ammonia. Apparently anhydrous ammonia is also caught in the shortage squeeze.

Item 2 in the executive order reads: Motor carriers and drivers transporting propane and anhydrous ammonia to affected areas of the state and providing direct assistance for emergency relief efforts, are exempted from regulations incorporated

in Minnesota Statues, section 221.0314, subdivision 9, pertaining to hours of service.

Zelenka said two factors converged to exacerbate the issue. The late planting of much of the 2013 corn crop created wetter corn at harvest, plus the tremendous growth of on-farm drying and much larger drying facilities at many country elevators perhaps somewhat disrupted the normal distribution channels for Lp gas.

Big dryers have a tremendous appetite for Lp gas.

Zelenka said big commercial dryer units can burn through a semi load of Lp gas in four hours. Most dryers since mid-October have been on a 24/7 schedule. “I’m not certain what the answer is but we’re trying to work with both suppliers and the trucking industry to find answers to this problem.”

The issue is both time and the cost of transportation. If it’s a 10-hour run to a terminal in Kansas plus figuring in the cost of transporting, it’s a dicey call as to what’s the smart decision,” Zelenka said.

He questioned why suppliers wouldn’t have anticipated the drying needs of Corn Belt farmers this fall, “or have we been lulled into a sense of security in view of the ‘in-field’ drying of the crop over the past couple of years.”

Will there be more outdoor corn storage this fall?

Likely, but this season much of that may be highmoisture corn. If moisture contents are 18 percent and higher, Zelenka said that corn can fairly quickly develop some quality issues. It puts a big priority on aeration of that corn as soon as possible.

“But you still need to bring this corn down to 14 to 14.5 percent moisture for longer term storage.

Unfortunately we don’t see any immediate relief.

Relaxing the trucking regulations gives some flexibility. But the problem is where do you go to source the product”? Zelenka said.

He thinks the executive order will provide some help but he questions if this isn’t more a supply problem. “It appears agriculture is competing with pipeline owners and suppliers who use their pipelines for other products, perhaps diverting to heating fuels right now or even moving Lp to export terminals.”

Pat Macht, Energy Division manager of the Harvest Land Cooperative with major grain handling facilities at both Morgan and Springfield, said Lp gas supplies for the four dryers used in this cooperative “are on a day-by-day basis. So far no shut downs but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

Craig Hebrink, general manager of Co-op Country Elevator with grain storage at Sacred Heart, Renville, Danube and Olivia, said the Lp shortage is no concern for them. “About 20 years ago we hooked up with a natural gas pipeline running through our communities. I think many Minnesota elevators over time have hitched up to natural gas if it’s available.

But I can sympathize with producers and elevators having to shut down because they’ve run out of Lp gas. It’s a tremendous problem.” ❖

The rain was coming down as The Land spoke to Scott Johnson on Oct. 15. With more than two inches of rain in the gauge, harvest was temporarily on hold. It would of “been nice to Scott Johnson have this (rain) this summer,” he said.

The soybean harvest is basically completed for Johnson. The crop turned out as good as he thought it would, given that “didn’t have the highest expectations.”

The corn harvest is in full swing, and he hopes that in “three weeks, we’ll be finished.” The corn that he harvested first was hit by hail during a summer storm that brought havoc to many of his fields. Yields are “not good as of yet,” Johnson said. Moisture content from fields with hail damage was at 19 to 22 percent.

“We’ve been doing a little fall tillage as we go along here,” Johnson said. He was hoping that the fields would be dry enough by Oct. 16 to get back in the field to harvest some corn. “As soon

as you start you can’t wait to get finished,” he said.

The end is in sight, Johnson said, as long as there’s “no white stuff on the ground.”

The 2013 soybean harvest is in the books for Chris Messner — he finished combining beans on Oct. 14.

When The Land spoke to him a day Chris Messner later, he said harvest “went OK.” Messner said beans averaged 46 to 47 bushels per acre; better than he anticipated. It ended up being an average crop for Messner. He’s relieved to be done with beans as they are more temperamental than corn in terms of having harvest conditions be close to perfect. There’s “a lot of potential problems,” he said. Those harvest problems, thankfully, never appeared this year for him.

Charlie Laubenthal is half done with corn harvest and the crop is “better than expected.” Moisture is running at 16 percent with yields Charlie Laubenthal around 220 bushels per acre. When The Land spoke to Laubenthal on Oct. 15, he said that the harvest had been “trouble-free so far.”

He is “hoping by the end of the week we’ll take our beans out.” The weather for harvest has been “favorable.” If those conditions continue, Laubenthal said they’d finish the beans and then resume corn harvest by next week. He plans on being done by the end of the month. Once harvest is done, Lauebenthal will start fall tillage and applying fertilizer and anhydrous ammonia.

“I like this season, I always like fall,” he said. “I always like getting the crop out; it’s a good feeling once the crop is in the bin.”

Laubenthal knows his crops could’ve fared much worse than it ended up, given how things started in the spring. This year’s crops are “not a total crop failure by any means,” he said.

With the rocky start of this year’s planting season, and some great harvest conditions to wrap things up, Laubenthal’s crops have truly seen it all in 2013. ❖

The one and a half inches of rain that hit Danny Brandt’s farm “put a screeching halt to beet harvest,” Brandt said. He’s confident, however, that Danny Brandt it will only take one day for conditions to improve to resume.

The Land spoke to Brandt on Oct. 16 as he was giving the sugar beet trucks a checkup so they’d be ready to go the next day. As for the beet harvest, “sugar content isn’t as high as we’d hoped it to be,” he said.

A nice part of beet harvest for Brandt is the opening of Highway 9 to the beet piler. That part of Highway 9 is only open to beet trucks as road construction isn’t finished on that stretch yet. “That’s been nice,” Brandt said. “I told my crew to be very cautious on the work zone.”

His crew is seven guys — all veteran beet haulers for Brandt. He estimates that they should be completing beet harvest in the next four to five days, then moving on to corn.

Brandt has taken a sample of corn off the field and has seen moisture ranging from 16.5 to 25 percent and yields from zero to 175 bushels per acre. “Once we get done with beets we’ll hit the corn pretty hard,” Brandt said. He is “pretty happy with the corn thus far,” but expects “yields to be down quite a bit from last year.” The corn harvest should take him around 10 days to complete.

The end of harvest is in sight for Brandt. With weather cooperating for the most part, and the machinery doing the same, harvest has been uneventful. An uneventful harvest is music to any farmer’s ears.

Cover story: Targhee sheep deserve second look

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent Desire Routier of Lake Benton, Minn., is just getting started raising Targhee sheep and she is already enthusiastic about the breed.

Her enthusiasm was boosted even more from her attendance at the U.S. Targhee Sheep Association national show in Arlington, Wis., this past July. At the show her February ram lamb got second in his class, and her yearling ram sold for $400.

Routier is a senior this year at Elkton-Lake Benton High School. Her introduction to sheep came as a 4-H project when she got some Hampshires to show.

“I wanted another breed for variation,” Routier said, “and I read in a 4H newsletter that the U.S. Targhee Sheep Association had a starter flock program.”

Her internet research told her Targhee is a hardy breed developed in the West for their wool but also good for meat, so she applied and was awarded a starter flock — three ewes contributed by breeders in South Dakota and Wyoming. Robert Padula of Montevideo, Minn., loaned her a ram, and she was on her way. Routier said the Targhees are not as demanding as the Hampshires.

“I’ve never really had any lambing problems,” she said. “They’re pretty easy to keep feed-wise, and they’re usually really good mothers.”

Padula was happy to support Routier’s enthusiasm with the loan of a ram to help start her flock, just as others had helped him when he was a young person starting with sheep. His years of experience support what she

is already finding out.

“I think the Targhee breed is the best kept secret in the U.S. sheep industry,” Padula wrote in an e-mail interview.

Padula, 49, worked a number of years for the American Sheep Industry Association in their national wool improvement program, and once back in Minnesota was a regional livestock specialist for the Extension Service for a while. He now raises both Targhee and Merino sheep.

Like Routier, 4-H was where he first saw Targhee sheep and he wasn’t “overly impressed.” He was showing a more common white-faced breed and show ring appeal was important. But when he went to the University of Minnesota, there were some Targhee sheep, as well as professors who

helped him realize there was more to sheep than showing and winning blue ribbons.

“That message was further instilled in me in graduate school in Montana, where I met and worked with many of the top Targhee sheep producers in the state,” he said.

His family has raised sheep since 1972. After he got his masters degree in animal science in 1990, the family changed over to Targhee sheep. They could feed four ewes with the same feed resources as three bigger whiteface sheep, the wool was worth at least two times as much and instead of a 135-percent lamb crop they got a 175percent lamb crop.

“It was a matter of economics,” Padula said.

In addition to that, he liked how progressive the Targhee producers were.

“Many of the Targhee producers I worked with in Montana were involved in the National Sheep Improvement Program using performance data to evaluate their sheep,” he said. “I enrolled our sheep in NSIP in 1990 when my family bought our first Targhee sheep and have kept up with it ever since.”

While many have given up on wool, he still views wool as an important product and income generator in his sheep operation.

“I’ve been a wool advocate for 30 years,” Padula said.

But he doesn’t see Targhee strictly as a wool breed. He calls them “a mater-

nal dual-purpose breed that has higher-valued wool.”

“The Targhee breed has been selected for mothering ability over the years,” he said. “It is a breed that should be used as a ewe flock base, and then cross it with terminal sire lines for market lambs.”

Padula also considers Targhee rams as a good choice for other producers.

“After a while, commercial flocks hit a productivity plateau and it would make sense for producers to think about using a Targhee ram on their own ewes to generate replacement females that have better quality and higher-value wool,” he said. “Fortunately, the Targhee breed has a history of being a performance-based sheep, not strictly ornamental for the show ring, and commercial producers can buy rams with performance data to help them make sound selection decisions.”

It is Association members who, like Padula, are convinced of the breed’s worth that help young people through the starter flock program.

Mardy Dallas-Rutledge, secretary of the U.S. Targhee Sheep Association, wrote in response to an e-mail inquiry that “the starter flock program was created five years ago in an effort to get youth more involved in agriculture and Targhees.”

She said that through the application process, every June a youth is selected to receive a starter flock of three purebred, registered Targhee See TARGHEE, pg. 10A

Deadline nears for American Sheep Industry Association awards Nov. 15 marks the deadline for the submission of nominations for the annual American Sheep Industry Association awards.

There are three award categories available for nomination.

The McClure Silver Ram Award is dedicated to volunteer commitment and service and is presented to a sheep producer who has made substantial contributions to the sheep industry and its organizations in his/her state, region or nation. The award may recognize a lifetime of achievement or may recognize a noteworthy, shorter-term commitment and service to the industry.

Nominees should be recognized as industry leaders with nominations spelling out the candidates’ contributions to the industry and its producers. Producers should be actively involved in sheep production and may or may not produce sheep as their sole income. However, their nominations should not be based in any part on a paid position serving the sheep industry.

The Camptender Award recognizes industry contributions from a professional in a position or field related to sheep production.

Nominees should show a strong commitment and a significant contribution to the sheep industry, its organizations and its producers above and beyond what is called for in his/her professional capacity.

Nominees should be well-respected in their fields by their peers and by sheep producers. Nominees may be involved with the industry as teachers, consultants, scientists, youth leaders, promoters, event managers, journalists or any other position directly related to the sheep industry, enabling the nominee to affect the sheep industry in a positive and longlasting way. Nominees may be recognized for lifetime service to the sheep industry or may be recognized for a shorter-term commitment that resulted in significant benefits for the sheep industry.

The Shepherd’s Voice Award for Media recognizes outstanding year-long coverage of the sheep industry in either print or broadcast. The award excludes all publications and affiliates related solely to the sheep industry, allowing for recognition of outlets with general coverage for excellence in covering sheep industry issues.

Nominations may be publications, networks or specific reporters exhibiting a strong commitment to balanced reporting and consistent coverage of the sheep industry locally, statewide and/or nationally.

had brought her bachelor’s degree in animal science and business management from the University of California at Davis to Minnesota to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. When she got a job in Veterinary Services that had her traveling, they sold the Boer goats.

Now that LeFever’s work at the Natural Resources and Conservation Services office in St. Paul allows more time at home, they decided to buy goats again to help keep down the weeds. They had heard of Kikos and after researching the breed, purchased three-quarter blood Kiko does in northern Iowa that were registered with the American Kiko Goat Association and a full-blooded buck from Red Wing, Minn., also registered with the AKGA. Then they went to a sale in Cape Girardeau, Mo. “We were a little surprised by how much they cost, but we bought one female, and she’s our best one,” LeFever said.

Now that they were getting serious about the Kiko breed, they attended a sale in Indiana, where they learned of another registry at the National Kiko Goat Registry.

By RICHARD SIEMERS The Land Correspondent Eldon Westhausen and Renee LeFever have old machinery sitting around, and their herd of 22 Kiko goats climb all over it. The bucks seem to want a better view, the does climb to eat leaves from tree branches, and the kids just have climbing in their blood.

This is their first crop of kids.

“We had five nannies that we bred last year, and every one of them had twins,” LeFever said.

“They’re very attentive mothers,” Westhausen said.

“Really no work when they are kidding. We just go out and watch them, we don’t have anything to do.”

They also like Kiko because they are a hardy breed, low maintenance and highly resistant to worm infestation.

They’ve had the Kikos for only a year, but these are not the first goats the couple has had. They met almost 10 years ago when LeFever bought an acreage up the road to have a place for her horses and stopped to purchase guineas from Westhausen. That business transaction led to friendship and marriage.

Westhausen owned a couple of Boer goats and at LeFever’s suggestion they expanded the herd. LeFever

And certainly, Sampson, my devoted hunting companion, is showing his age at 12 1/2 years.

For the first decade, the English springer spaniel was a hard-charging hunting machine.

We’d start in the morning and hunt together all day, quitting only after we acquired a limit or ran out of legal shooting time.

A repaired ACL two years ago only slowed him up nominally. Even after the surgery, we hunted a full season.

Last year, we hunted hard until season’s end, both in Minnesota and Iowa. But it was becoming apparent that time was catching up with my buddy.

In his younger days, he was able to leap onto the tailgate of the pickup with ease. In recent years, I would have to give him a little boost. Nowadays, I simply hoist him up and into the bed.

Not so long ago, he would lead the way up and down the basement stairs, several steps at a time.

He now follows me up and down them with care and deliberation, one at a time.

Hard of hearing, he is embarrassed when I have to wake him from his sound sleep and noisy snoring for his morning walk, an excursion that has been shortened considerably over the years.

Anyone who has owned a good bird dog would agree that above all, their hunting companions live to hunt.

And much as I love to hunt pheasants, pursuing them without a dog is not only a lot of work and largely ineffective, it also is an empty experience.

There is something magical about watching a hunting dog work a weed patch, nose to the ground as it sorts through the mysteries of such wild places.

And if it all comes together, with a flurry of wings, a shot, a bird found and returned to hand, that’s the icing on the cake.

I still look forward to the opening of the pheasant season, though perhaps not as eagerly as I once did.

As a young hunter, scarce pheasants were the rule rather than the exception. Tough hunting was expected.

We’d hunt long and hard, carried all day through the thickest cover on young, strong legs. So would our dogs. But success was never assured.

But after nearly three decades of the Conservation Reserve Program, I have grown accustomed to having plenty of opportunities to bag a bird or two every trip.

Now, as CRP acres once again are vanishing from the countryside, so, too, are the birds.

What’s more, as the 2013 season approached, I harbored real concerns over the aging spaniel’s ability to accompany me this fall.

While he remains in pretty good shape, the rigors of hunting can be tough for even young dogs, let alone a geriatric canine.

Unable to hunt during the opening weekend, we finally managed to get out mid-week.

The old dog perked up when he saw the shotgun, the electronic collar, me in my blaze orange. He bolted for the door, prancing in a tight circle.

We traveled just a few miles to a public hunting area in Nicollet County where well-worn paths from the parking area into the grassy cover suggested the place already had seen plenty of hunting pressure.

I carried a gun, but on a heavily hunted public area, one still surrounded by plenty of unpicked cornfields, it was with realistic expectations.

The trip was less about finding birds than stretching our legs. Mainly, I wanted to see if the old dog was up to it.

We hunted around the edges, avoiding the thickest cover.

Like a veteran, Sampson quartered in front of me, occasionally pausing to determine my whereabouts.

After 90 minutes and flushing not a single bird, we were on the swing back to the now distant truck when I noticed that the headlands of a nearby cornfield had been picked where it abutted the public area.

It would be a long detour to check it out and would mean a much longer walk back to the truck.

But on a hunch that a few birds might have lingered along the sun-bathed grassy edge to feed instead of heading into the unpicked corn, we worked our way to the spot.

We had hunted just a few yards when the dog grew more animated, casting back and forth. A moment later, he disappeared into the grass.

I had barely taken a step in to follow him when a few yards away, in noisy flurry of wings beats, a rooster exploded from the grass, cackling loudly.

I swung on it and just as it was about to disappear over a stand of willows, touched off a shot. Feathers flew, the bird plummeted into the heavy cover. The dog plunged in after it.

For two old hunters, it was a long, long walk back to the truck.

But with the unexpected gift of the young, fully plumed cock pheasant, taken from a heavily hunted public area no less, weighing nicely in the game bag, it was worth every step.

Odor, taste and visual repellents can be used to repel many wildlife species, but may have inconsistent effectiveness.

Human hair, soaps, garlic oil, hot sauce and animal repellents can be applied to branches and foliage to discourage browsing. Weather, application frequency, animal population and feeding pressure affect the success of repellents.

Arguments aside, there’s just one authentic recipe for wings Certain foods and dishes bring out the passion in people — especially in the barbecue genre.

Different regions have specialties and their own way of doing things. Whether it be about the wood, the rub or the sauce, full-blown arguments can erupt over which is best if you are talking with people who are passionate about their ‘que.

Another dish that creates hard-headed passion is

Buffalo chicken wings.

This dish was created at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, N.Y. The story goes that the owner of the bar wanted to fix a late-night snack for her son and his friends, so she used what she had on hand. Back then chicken wings were scraps, so she decided to deep fry them and create a sauce using hot sauce, butter and vinegar. She used blue cheese dressing for dip, and voila, Buffalo wings.

Many recipes out there claim to be the original. But, if anything else is added, it is not the original sauce. Even the Anchor Bar has created many varieties and flavors.

If you want a taste of the original, give this simple recipe a try.

The basics For this recipe, I used thighs instead of wings. Thighs were $1.19 per pound, while wings were $1.99 per pound. Also, I like the flavor of thighs, and they have more meat for less money. I used this recipe to make a family pack — or about 10 — chicken thighs.

I used indirect heat, which means only half the grill has coals under it. If you are using a gas grill, preheat with all flames, then turn off half of them.

For coals, I used a mixture of standard briquettes and lump wood charcoal.

Getting started Brush both sides of each thigh with olive oil. Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. For more flavor, use your favorite rub. I used a rub with a paprika and brown sugar base that included granulated garlic, salt, onion powder and freshly cracked black pepper. Go online and find a basic rub recipe. (I keep a batch on hand in our kitchen.)

Once the thighs are seasoned, place them on the side of the grill where there is no heat directly under the meat. Close the lid and allow the thighs to grill/bake for 30 minutes or so. If using charcoal, make sure all vents (top and bottom) are at least half-opened, so you don’t kill the coals with a lack of oxygen.

Buffalo sauce 3/4 cup hot sauce (Franks hot sauce is considered authentic) 3/4 cup real butter (I didn’t say this was health food.)

6 Tbs. white wine vinegar Melt the butter over medium heat. Add the hot sauce and vinegar, then stir until blended. If you’re having sinus issues, take a big whiff. You should be breathing better now.

Take some of the sauce outside (maybe one-third of it) and baste the thighs. Then place the thighs over the direct flame and baste the other side. Stay with it as you will probably have flaming.

The chicken is pretty much cooked by this point.

All you are doing is adding a little char and texture.

Bring in the thighs, discard the sauce that you used outside for basting, and pour the fresh sauce that you left inside over the thighs.

Serve with celery, carrots and your favorite blue cheese or ranch dressing. It’s a flavorful, inexpensive meal. Give it a try.

Competitive grants available for agricultural education The Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council is once again accepting grant applications for the improvement of agricultural education across Minnesota.

MAELC will be awarding approximately $177,000 in competitive grants between two separate grant programs. All grant applications are to be sent to MAELC offices and postmarked before or on Nov. 15.

Since its establishment, MAELC has provided over $3.3 million in competitive grants, scholarships, sponsored projects and awards.

“Where Farm and Family Meet”

W

hen Veteran’s Day was still celebrated as Armistice Day, no one would have celebrated more than Joseph Pohlen.

Pohlen left many family members behind when the 17-year-old immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1872. He settled near Hospers, Iowa, married a young woman named Margaret, and with her raised a family of eight children. One son, John, moved to a farm near Wabasso, Minn.

Joseph would visit his son, passing through the small town of Wanda, Minn. He liked the town and became friends with the priest at St. Mathias Catholic Church.

Joseph’s American dream became a nightmare when the United States entered World War I.

He was loyal to America, a country that had been very good to him, but he was torn by the thought that his sons might be called upon to fight against family members in his native land.

Joseph offered up a prayer — and a vow. If none of his sons were drafted, he would build a memorial in honor of the Virgin Mary as a sign of thanksgiving. Only one son, John, was drafted, but the Armistice was signed before he left to join the army.

Joseph kept his vow. With permission to build on the grounds of St. Mathias in Wanda, he had an eight-sided chapel erected, honoring his eight children.

A.C. Ochs Brick and Tile of Springfield, Minn., built the chapel at a cost of $2,000.

Inside is an altar and a few seats.

The walls are light blue and lift up to a

heavenly blue vaulted ceiling, forming a dome top.

Descendants meet there for a family reunion every couple of years, according to Donald Pohlen, a great-grandson of Joseph. The 1922 chapel has been used by St. Mathias as the starting point for liturgical processions into the church building, and it is a quiet place for individuals to meditate.

Among the many monuments that have been erected for the heroes and sacrifices of war, the Pohlen Chapel in Wanda is unique. It is more of a prayer for peace, the statement of a father’s gratitude to God for the safety of his children.

The following market analysis is for the week ending Oct. 25.

CORN — It seemed every day was déjà vu all over again this week: harvest moved along, the basis and futures markets held their own to attract bushels into the pipeline in response to export demand and profitable ethanol margins, and the government reported huge corn export sales in their on-going efforts to play catch up.

Better-than-expected corn yields continue to be reported.The September U.S. Department of Agriculture report used a yield of 155.3 bushels per acre, but the current average guess for the Nov. 8 report is 156.5 PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. bu./acre and rising. The USDA reported corn sales for the week that ended Oct. 3 were higher than anticipated at 52.8 million bushels. We should get caught up on three weeks of export sales on the Oct. 31 report. In USDA daily reporting this week, Mexico stepped in to buy 210,000 metric tons of 2014-15 crop corn.

An interesting report this week indicated that U.S. dried distiller grains exports in August were a record at 1.05 million mt. This is just the second time that exports have exceeded 1 mmt. Of that total, China took 565,000 mt which exceeded the last record set in July of this year.

World corn demand was apparent this week with Taiwan buying 60,000 mt of Brazilian corn and South Korea buying 55,000 mt of U.S. or Brazilian origin. South Korea’s NOFI feed maker rejected

It has been an interesting experience to go through a government shutdown and be involved in the livestock industry. They say there is nothing like flying blind, and the industry just found out how unnerving that really is over that 16-day period.

During the government shutdown, the cattle market enjoyed stronger live prices as packers pushed bids higher following the futures market.

By the end of the week ending Oct. 18, cattle prices had reached $131 per hundredweight live and $204/cwt. dressed basis the Midwest. The problem was that there was a vacuum of buy orders and the futures dropped dramatically to close lower creating a reversal. Technically, this creates a bearish outlook for the cattle market. Whether this holds true over the next several weeks will be the question answered by the activity in both cash and futures markets.

Despite the fact that cattle numbers are down, the demand for beef is still in question as domestic movement has continued to be slow. Export business has been good; however competing countries have all expanded their herd sizes and pose a threat to cut into the U.S. exporting of beef.

We’ve had quite a year so far in the grain industry; both the weather and the markets have been challenging. Many of us are looking forward to closing out the 2013 books.

However, as we begin planning for 2014 we are faced with a new dilemma: profit margin deterioration like we haven’t seen in years.

Almost daily I get asked, “When will land values and rental rates start reflecting the lower commodity prices we are experiencing?” My short answer is, “When they have to.”

In order to take a “big-picture approach” to land values and rental rates, we can’t just look at profit margins over time; the liquidity or cash position within the marketplace also plays a huge role.

The term often used to measure the liquidity of a business is “working capital.” Working capital is defined as current assets (cash or items that are normally converted to cash during the course of a business year) minus current liabilities (financial obligations that are due and payable within the next year).

In other words, it’s the owner equity in the current portion of your financial statement.

The offers did show that U.S. corn was $2 per ton higher than South American origin, but $5 per ton cheaper than Black Sea origin. U.S. corn’s premium to South America is the narrowest it’s been in a year.

Weekly ethanol production was up 28,000 barrel per day to 897,000 barrels per day, the biggest production week since June 2012. Stocks were fractionally higher at 15.5 million barrels. There is chatter in the market that the Environmental Protection Agency may release the 2014 ethanol mandate by the end of the month.

Tyson announced this week they would stop buying Canadian slaughter cattle because of the costs associated with country of origin labeling.

OUTLOOK: December corn traded a tight 9 1/4cent range this week from $4.37 to $4.46 1/4 as harvested bushels spilled into bins across the Midwest.

This is the smallest weekly range in nearly seven years. December corn closed down 1 1/2 cents at $4.40 per bushel. Since November options expired on Friday, the $4.40 close left traders with short November option positions in the dark.

Long option positions are automatically exercised if the option is one tick in the money; but with the close right on a strike price, the long option holder must make a decision if they want to exercise a $4.40 put or call. Short holders may have to wait until the first of the week to know if their option was exercised.

Forecasts for rain may slow harvest in the coming week, keeping harvest in stutter-step mode. The more spread out harvest is, the higher the likelihood that bushels find a home. This gives credence to ideas that fall prices may not fall as much as expected given fore-

casts for a two billion bushel carryout. It doesn’t mean we won’t decline, probably just not as much as would seem likely with such a large carryout.

Short-term support in the December contract is the fall low of $4.32, then $4.25 per bushel; resistance is at $4.50 per bushel.

SOYBEANS — Harvest focus switched from soybeans to corn in a big way this week with beans too wet to continue.

However, some intend to switch back to beans to finish up before forecasted rains are scheduled to arrive just before Halloween. Harvest was 63 percent complete as of Oct. 20, slightly behind the 69 percent five-year average. Progress is predicted to be 75 percent complete by Oct. 27.

The USDA also released the latest condition report ever that indicated bean conditions improved 4 percent from the last report a month ago to 57 percent good-excellent. The November-January inverse soared to as wide as seven cents this week and basis firmed in efforts to meet demand. November soybeans traded to their highest levels since late-September when it hit $13.18 3/4 per bushel.

In an unusual move, Russia appeared on the daily export sales reports this week, purchasing 120,000 mt of U.S. soybeans, bringing their total for 2013-14 to 240,000 mt. This surpasses yearly totals for at least the last seven years. Demand is on-going with China and Taiwan each buying 120,000 mt of U.S. beans.

Weekly export sales for the week ended Oct. 3 were in line with projections at 34.2 million bushels. Meal sales for the week ending Oct. 3 were a record 850,000 mt.

Based on the USDA’s last forecast, we have 41 percent of the sales already on the books. We’ll expect the meal export line to increase in future USDA reports.

The average grain producer in our benchmarking analysis has a working capital position of around $500 per acre and a WC/VFP (working capital as a percent of value of farm production) ratio of 46 percent.

Considering that 15 percent WC/VFP is a normal underwriting target, the grain clients in our study have more than three times the target, which is strong.

Working capital is probably one of the best measures of an operation’s ability to weather a storm; it’s like gas in the tank. If I play this analogy out a bit, when you’re on a trip traveling down the highway in say, the middle of South Dakota, and your tank is full, even though you don’t know when you’ll come across the next gas station you probably don’t change your speed because you have plenty of gas and a history of finding gas when you need it.

However, when you’re down below a fourth of a tank and still don’t know when you’ll find gas, if you’re like me, that’s when I start getting nervous and change to a more conservative speed.

I believe this same human nature plays itself out in the markets. The stronger the working capital within an industry or marketplace, the longer we can experience poor or negative margins with little change to our cost structure on competitive assets such as land.

It is especially critical for operators to understand how their working capital position stacks up against the competition. Now that tax planning season is here, it’s important to analyze capital purchase decisions wisely.

Consider how they will impact your working capital if you pay cash or how they will impact your debt service if you finance. The decision to purchase capital may save you from paying taxes now, but does it put your operation at a competitive disadvantage if we experience poor margins for an extended time?

No one producer can force the market to be reasonable, we can only do our best to prepare our business to persevere through adversity and be positioned for viability when attractive profit margins return.

duction at 88 mmt with exports of 45 mmt (up from 42.5 mmt last year and the USDA’s current 43 mmt projection). The attaché’s ending-stocks forecast is 3.7 mmt compared to the last USDA 8.1 mmt estimate.

Weather in South America is improving with welcome rains predicted in the coming week. The moisture will improve planting conditions in Argentina and Brazil. Bean planting in Argentina is just getting started and Brazilian bean planting is estimated at 51 percent complete.

OUTLOOK: November beans closed 8 3/4 cents higher for the week at an even $13 per bushel. This left November option holders in the same boat as described in the corn outlook. We’ll have to wait to see if that has any impact on Monday’s price direction.

Downside for beans is limited with everyone scrambling to not miss any available soybean. This is attested to with strong basis levels and a widening November-January board spread. Gains may be held in check as we approach the final third of harvest and better-than-expected yields need to find a home.

First support in the January soybean contract is near $12.90, the $12.63 1/2 per bushel, with resistance at $13.30 per bushel.Weather may dictate prices in the short run, but coming out of harvest end-users and exporters will have to attain a price level to entice bushels out of storage.

Hog market has been adrift

The hog market has been in a drift pattern for several weeks as prices have ever so slowly weakened under pressure for increasing live inventory. The pork cutout has also slipped, reflecting the adequate supply of pork in the pipeline.

Demand for pork continues to be good as it is probably the best value of all the competitive meats. This demand for pork has also been reflected in good export business and as the pork cutout weakens and the U.S. dollar remains weak, the export business should remain firm.

However, as hog numbers are expected to continue to expand in the near future, this will likely keep the live hog prices on the defensive in the weeks ahead.

Producers should keep an eye on market conditions and use strength to consider protecting inventories into the end of the year. ❖

amendments to California’s Class 4b pricing formula.”

Provisions would specifically tie a dry whey value factor to reported dry whey values, similar to that found in federal milk marketing order pricing formulas.

Dairy legislation will be revisited in January, upon the Legislature return to session, according to WUD. Meanwhile, the California Department of Food and Agriculture released its findings and conclusions to the Sept. 12 milk price hearing in Sacramento. The department stated that it will simply extend the increases already in effect since July 1 through June 30.

Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross stated the increases result in an overall price rise of 12.5 cents/cwt. each month and “I believe this will provide a consistent level of revenue to producers to ensure a stable milk supply.”

She added that “while there are positive signs in the marketplace, the fragility of the country’s economic recovery and the stability of the dairy sector compel me to make this extension. However, I am convinced that continued adjustments to the minimum price are inadequate to address the ongoing difficulties in the dairy industry. Our antiquated state pricing system demands structural reform.

“I understand there will be disappointment with this decision in light of the publicity surrounding the perceived agreement between producers and processors during the legislative session.

However, the department was not jointly petitioned by producers and processors, only some producers, and when questioned by the hearing panel, processors responded that there was no agreement.”

The DIC says it respects the CDFA’s decision not to increase the milk price relief already in place and stated, “after thoroughly reviewing the facts, Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross has correctly concluded that further increases to the temporary price relief already in place for California dairy farmers were not warranted,” said Rachel Kaldor, DIC executive director. “Secretary Ross was guided by the facts and we respect her decision.

“The data shows very clearly that economic conditions for dairy farmers have improved substantially since last year. ... In addition to significantly lower feed costs, dairy farmers are also benefiting substantially from an increased demand for cheese and other products. As a result, they’ve already collected $508 million more from

processors during the first nine months of this year compared to the same period last year.”

California Dairy Campaign President Joe Augusto counters that the hearing decision “demonstrates that the California milk pricing system is not equitable to the state’s dairy producers.”

The CDC had joined California Dairies Inc., Milk Producers Council and Western United Dairymen in calling for an increase in the 4b price in the amount of 46 cents/cwt. and an increase in the whey factor value from 75 cents to $1/cwt.

“Today’s decision once again makes it clear that the only way to restore equity to milk pricing in California is by joining the federal milk marketing order system,” Augusto said. “On average dairy producer prices in California have been $1.05 lower than prices paid in the federal order causing the average sized dairy in our state to be paid nearly $600,000 less than the same sized dairy in the federal order system since January 2011.”

■ In export news, DairyBusinessUpdate reports that the 35,000 members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters involved in the U.S. dairy industry are opposed to the proposed TransPacific Partnership trade deal.

Uniting with dairy workers from the National Union of Workers in Australia and the New Zealand Dairy Workers Union, IBT members in Canada and the United States sent a joint letter to their nations’ trade negotiators saying they will work to defeat any trade deal that “erodes the rights or threatens the livelihoods of workers” from participating nations.

■ Cooperatives Working Together accepted 11 requests for export assistance this week to sell 2 million pounds of cheese and 771,618 pounds of butter to customers in Asia, Central America, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

The product will be delivered through March 2014 and raised 2013 cheese exports to 111.3 million pounds plus 81 million pounds of butter, 44,092 pounds of anhydrous milk fat and 218,258 pounds of whole milk powder to 37 countries.
