The Golden Eye: Photographers Capture the Lakes Region

By Thomas P. Caldwell One cannot live long in the Lakes Region, surrounded as it is by lakes and mountains, without developing a desire to capture those landscapes, with their sunrises and sunsets, the changing seasons, and the wildlife that make the area special.

Photographers, both professional and amateur, are drawn to the vistas, the recreational activities, and the lake culture, which offer opportunities for experimentation, expanding their talents, and sharing images that preserve those moments with the public.

Jeremy Noyes is one such photographer. Coming to New Hampshire from the West Coast, where he mainly focused on photographing the coastlines and ocean scenes, his landscape photography has evolved accordingly.

“I still love photographing the coast, but now I’m especially drawn to the lakes, rivers, and the White Mountains,” he says.

Jeremy says he first got into photography by taking pictures of his children growing up and documenting their lives.

“Around that same time, I took a few cross-country trips and photographed national parks along the way,” he recounts. “When I got home, a good friend encouraged me to pursue photography more seriously. I was living on the West Coast at the time, and the scenery there naturally drew me toward landscape photography. That experience really set me on a path to learn everything I possibly could about the

Jeremy opened his first photo gallery in Meredith on January 21, 2023, and he became a member of the League of NH Craftsmen and the Lakes Region Art Association.

He currently has five upcoming art shows in New Hampshire, including at the nine-day League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair at the Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury.

Jeremy says, “I am also looking forward to traveling more throughout New England and continuing to explore new locations. I’m especially excited about the changing seasons and all of the photography opportunities they bring.”

In summing it all up, Jeremy says, “Photography is an outlet for me. It’s

my peace, motivation, and inspiration.

I genuinely look forward to getting up at the crack of dawn to experience and capture those quiet early-morning moments. Being able to share that beauty with others and hopefully inspire them is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.”

Daniel Sarch of Franklin approaches photography from another direction.

“I got started in photography when I began seeing photographers on Instagram in middle school and being enamored by how beautiful some of the photos were. I thought I could do that, too. So, I begged my dad for a cam-

era and got my first point-and-shoot.

I began photographing the mountains and landscapes of central Pennsylvania, where I am originally from. Then I began photographing my friends and people and eventually went to school for photojournalism at Rochester Institute of Technology, which, after graduating, led me to work as a photojournalist in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.”

He began his professional career as a photographer and reporter at the Laconia Daily Sun, where, for about two years, he was able to immerse himself in what was happening in the Lakes Region. Now he is a freelance photojournalist, “telling stories of people in communities around New Hampshire through news publications like The Boston Globe, New Hampshire Union Leader, or the Granite State News Collaborative”.

Daniel says, “I document authentic moments that center around the human experience, whether that’s family and childhood, addiction, conservation, or music.”

“As a trumpet player, I have always had an interest in documenting the American music culture, particularly jazz. I always try to go beyond the concert photos, showing the characters behind the instruments, and highlighting photographically the passion of each

He notes that, “When I moved to the Lakes Region in 2023, I wanted to find a community that shared my interest in photography. I found the Lakes Region Camera Club online and immediately joined. I’m always looking for feedback to continue growing as a photographer. By no surprise, photographers in the camera club specialized in landscapes, being surrounded by lakes and mountains. I learned a lot from photographers who photograph differently than I do, as well as seeing the places around the area that really drew people in. I became the president of the camera club in 2025 to continue this vibrant community of visually minded folks.”

Daniel said he admires photographers such as Erin Clark at The Boston Globe, saying, “Despite being in Bos-

ton, she has documented communities in New Hampshire beautifully.”

He adds, “My mentor, Astrid Riecken, is an independent photojournalist based in Washington, DC that primarily covers news and politics but has a large catalog of jazz photography that continues to inspire me and, stylistically, pulls from the Bauhaus school and the noir aesthetic in her documentary approach. And of course, my high school mentor, Rick Karp, instilled in me the importance of documenting those around me, like family and friends.”

His advice? “For those looking to improve their photography, I suggest immersing yourself with other photographers and learning from classic photography. While finding your own style seems like an individual pursuit, every piece of feedback and inspiration creates a better photographer.”

Dave Redman is a photographer who focuses on Newfound Lake landscapes.

“I bought my first camera back in 1977, just before enlisting in the Navy,” he said. “I wasn’t using it for anything specific, just life events. Being interested in birding, in the 1990s, I started doing bird photography.”

It was a different type of life event that brought him to the Newfound Region.

“After losing my wife to cancer, I discovered life again with my current wife of 13 years. She introduced me to Newfound Lake. This area provided me with unlimited opportunities. It was here at Newfound Lake where I started to shoot landscapes. The opportunities here are endless: Waterfalls, mountains, the four seasons. What’s not to love about this place ?”

Dave says his work has been gravitating toward sunrises, sunsets, and waterfalls.

He will be traveling to the Finger Lakes soon, planning to photograph

“as many waterfalls as possible” while he is there.

“After that, a trip to Labrador/Newfoundland to shoot icebergs and puffins.”

Dave observes, “Photography has changed quite a bit since my first camera, from film to digital. Learning the software to develop my work is a never-ending education.”

Dave prints most of his own work, something he doesn’t think many people do.

“They take a shot, post on social media, and move on to the next shot. They do not get to enjoy the reason for taking the shot in the first place for very long,” he says.

Asked about other photographers he admires, Dave says, “I really enjoy the work of Ann-Marie Shpeley Photography out of Gilford. Her shots around the Big Lake are exceptional.”

A Salute to America 250 and New Hampshire!

This article was written by NHFMProgram Director Janet Hotchkiss as an ongoing tribute to “Celebrating 250 Years.”

The first colony to establish an independent government on January 5, 1776, imagine! This was six months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

One famous quote: “Live Free or Die” by John Stark. This famous quote has become New Hampshire’s motto. It was originally “Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.”

John Stark was born in Londonderry in 1728. He became known as “the Hero of Bennington” for his exempla-

ry service in 1777.

He is best known for his service with Rogers’ Rangers, 1st New Hampshire Regiment, the New Hampshire Militia, and the Continental Army. He died in 1822 at the age of 93!

Three signers of the Declaration of Independence were from New Hampshire! Josiah Bartlett (1729 – 1795) was a respected physician and politician. He was born in Amesbury, Mas-

sachusetts, and died in Kingston, New Hampshire. He was the second person to sign the Declaration of Independence!

Matthew Thornton (1714 -1786) was a respected physician.

Born in County Antrim, Ireland, he eventually settled in Londonderry, New Hampshire. He also lived in Derry and Merrimac.

William Whipple (1730-1785) was a ship captain whose grandfather, Robert Cutts, was a well-known, distinguished ship builder from Kittery, Maine. William was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and by the age of 29 in 1759 had accumulated a substantial fortune. He left the seafaring business to go into business with two of his brothers in Portsmouth.

Ninth: On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire became the ninth state to ratify (approve) the United States Constitution. Preceding New Hampshire were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and South Carolina. The crucial vote met the requirements of Article VII, officially making the Constitution the binding legal framework for the United States.

Fourteen: From the meeting of the First Continental Congress in 1774 to

the end of the War, fourteen different men from New Hampshire served on national bodies.

Thirty-Six: Number of New Hampshire towns near the Connecticut River that temporarily seceded after the state constitution was adopted in 1776. Issues included representation, property qualifications, and civil rights.

Fifty-Six: Number of signers of the Declaration of Independence. In Washington, D.C., near the Washington Monument, is a small park and lagoon celebrating the memory of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It features 56 granite blocks, each bearing a facsimile of a signer’s signature, including Josiah Bartlett, Matthew Thornton, and William Whipple. The memorial serves as a stark reminder of the risks taken by the Founding Fathers, as many signers lost property, were captured, or lost family members during the Revolutionary War. One hundred barrels of gunpowder were taken to Fort William and Mary, then distributed throughout towns in the seacoast, including the altar in the Durham Community Church.

One thousand New Hampshire soldiers (two-thirds of the American Forces) fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill in Massachusetts.

Twelve thousand Granite Staters served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution (1775 – 1783).

Castle in the Clouds is Open for the Season Castle in the Clouds opened for its 2026 Season on Saturday, May 23. Visitors can look forward to spectacular views of Lake Winnipesaukee and daily tours of the restored Lucknow Mansion. This year, Castle in the Clouds will debut a new exhibition, From Private Estate to Public Treasure: Lucknow after Thomas and Olive Plant.

This exhibit features stories, photographs, and memorabilia of the various owners of the Lucknow Estate before the Castle Preservation Society (CPS) was founded in 2006 to manage the estate as a public attraction and museum.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of CPS, which is responsible for the ongoing care and restoration of the Lucknow Mansion and Estate. “This is a pivotal year for the Castle Preservation Society since we are concluding our current strategic plan and continuing to plan for the future of Castle in the Clouds,” said Charles Clark, Executive Director of CPS. “Our entire team of staff, board, and volunteers are extremely proud of all we have accomplished in the past 20 years, including the significant renovations to the Luc-

know Estate, which are either complete or scheduled for completion this year.”

In 2025, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated the Lucknow Estate as a National Historic Landmark (NHL). An NHL designation is the highest federal recognition of a property’s historical, architectural, or archaeological significance. This designation for the Lucknow Estate is a testament to the efforts of CPS and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust to care for the property.

On opening day, Castle in the Clouds offers free admission to all Moultonborough residents.

This Moultonborough Appreciation Day offers local residents a complimentary opportunity to visit the mansion before the largest crowds arrive in the beginning of summer. In addition to tours, opening day activities include the season’s first Saturday Hike and a Lucknow Garden Tour. Throughout this season, Castle in the Clouds will offer 200+ public program sessions, including classes and workshops, a presentation on the history of Ossipee Park, a production of Romeo and

On-site tickets are available for purchase beginning at 10 am daily, or online tickets can be purchased in advance. The Gift Shop, Carriage House, and Exhibit Gallery open at 10 am, and trolley service to the mansion begins at 10:15 am. Lunch is served in the Carriage House restaurant daily from 11:30 am until 3:30 pm. Chambers of Commerce and Tourism Associations in the Lakes Region

By Mark Okrant In New Hampshire, chambers of commerce and regional tourism associations support economic growth and community vitality. They share several similarities but may differ in focus, membership, and scope.

Both promote business interests, foster networking, and enhance quality of life through events, partnerships, and advocacy. While some chambers operate across multiple communities, the focus of all regional tourism associations is the travel industry.

Chambers of commerce emphasize broad business advocacy, lobbying, networking, and member services like increasing visibility for diverse business activities. Regional tourism as-

sociations prioritize marketing destinations, thereby attracting visitors and producing tourism-related economic benefits. While chambers serve businesses, professionals, and nonprofits directly, regional tourism associations emphasize promotion of lodgings, attractions, and hospitality members for the purpose of attracting visitors.

Chambers handle day-to-day business support and community events. Regional tourism associations provide media, paper, and online resources to help travelers plan to visit specific areas of the Granite State. The Lakes Region hosts a dynamic economy, based on tourism and complemented by a variety of other businesses and services. Success in those sectors does not simply ‘happen’.

Rather, it is a consequence of the actions of five organizations that generate the dynamic character of the area— Lakes Region Tourism Association and four chambers of commerce (Meredith Chamber of Commerce, Wolfeboro Chamber of Commerce, Alton Chamber of Commerce, and Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce).

The Lakes Region Tourism Association (LRTA) is the official tourism organization for New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. With a visitor center in Tilton that serves as a hub for planning trips to the area’s many lakes, hospitality businesses, and attractions, the LRTA markets the Lakes Region by providing visitor information on lodging, dining, shopping, and activities. It develops and distributes visitor guides and newsletters like “Ripples” to help people explore the region’s outdoor recreation (boating, hiking, fishing, as well as seasonal events like ice fishing derbies and fall foliage viewing). The Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) is a business organization in Meredith, founded in 1956, that supports more than 240 member businesses in the Lakes Region, through networking, events like the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, and promoting the area to visitors. It serves as a resource for both residents and visitors, connecting the community and promoting economic vitality in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region.

The MACC represents the businesses, nonprofits, and the communities of Ashland, Center Harbor, Holderness, Meredith, Moultonborough, New Hampton, Sandwich, and Tamworth.

Its mission is to support business success, connect the community, and promote the Meredith area as a year-round destination. MACC works with the Greater Meredith Program (GMP) on economic vitality, heritage, and beautification. The visitor center is located at 272 Daniel Webster Highway, P.O. The chamber’s mission is to improve the economic health of the area by bringing together businesses, residents, and government partners. It works to promote the area as a four-season destination.

The Alton Business Association (ABA) provides a network dedicated to helping local Lakes Region businesses by functioning similarly to a chamber of commerce. As a non-profit, it is dedicated to promoting business interests and welfare of the Alton area—celebrating what makes Alton special through events, partnerships, and volunteer efforts, in an effort to support local culture. The ABA supports new and existing businesses through an online directory with maps, social media promotion, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, event sharing, a “Member of the Month” spotlight, an annual member booklet, and a resource library. Its mission emphasizes economic development, quality of life improvements, and community collaboration, including donations to charities and fundraisers. It is strongly affiliated with the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, the Central New Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, and the Lakes Region Tourism Association.

While chambers primarily provide a network for the community and host events that help local businesses connect, they also promote services and support the regional economy. Regional tourism associations such as LRTA exist because visitation is a very large part of the New Hampshire economy, ensuring visitation is vital to the region and the Granite State as a whole.

While chambers of commerce are most successful when blending their resources with those of other organizations, including chambers of commerce representing surrounding communities, they are a significant bridge between governments, small businesses, corporations, schools, religious organizations, and the general public.

Usually, they rely on volunteers to make sure that they are successful.

Getting involved with a chamber of commerce in your community can offer significant benefits to you, including making new friends and contacts, and potentially gaining new customers. The bottom line is that each chamber of commerce is an association of businesspeople that promotes and protects the interests of its members.

When Stars Dazzled the Lakes Region

When Judy Garland sang the words to that song, she was summing up why people love summer stock theatre. This form of entertainment has a long tradition in the Lakes Region, namely when the Lakes Region Playhouse offered shows at its Gilford location over the years.

Not long after the World War II era, the Playhouse dazzled audiences with such actors as Ginger Rogers, Patty Duke, John Raitt, and others. Each summer, the small town of Gilford morphed from a sleepy community to a place where the stars, on any given summer’s evening, brought excitement it had never before known.

In 1949, Alton Wilkes brought summer stock theatre to Gilford. Wilkes had experience in theatre productions and used his knowledge when he leased an old barn from Gilford landowner Harry Spencer and opened the Lakes Region Playhouse.

The barn, located at what today is Route 11B, was then part of a farm. The farmhouse would later become the pop-

ular restaurant B. Mae Denny’s Eating and Drinking Establishment, a mainstay in Gilford for many years.

Preparing for the summer theatre, Wilkes and his wife bought the farmhouse to turn it into an inn, mainly to house and feed actors who would perform at the barn theatre a stone’s throw away. Mrs. Wilkes named the lodging facility the Stagedoor Inn. Wilkes had to do a lot of work to renovate the barn in readiness for theatre use.

According to one man who worked summers at the Playhouse, the renovations to the original barn were extensive. A new floor was put in, and siding was added to the exterior of the barn. The stage, dressing rooms, and audience seating were installed where previously cow stalls had been.

The barn was old, and when the house was at full capacity (nearly 700 seats) on a hot summer’s evening, the atmosphere was stifling. Eventually, air conditioning was added, but the actors’ performances on stage under hot lights were difficult.

Many stars on their way up or down played at the rural Gilford, New Hampshire spot. The area appealed to actors with its beautiful beaches and Lake Winnipesaukee. Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Fontaine, Betty Grable, Shirley Booth, and George Gobel were among the

Hollywood names that brought dramas, comedies, and musicals to the Playhouse stage. Also, Betty Grable, with her million-dollar legs, and Ginger Rogers, the toast of Hollywood, once graced the barn theatre.

Although conditions were rustic at the barn theatre, many of the actors were seasoned performers, having started their careers in the days of vaudeville.

Living out of a trunk and performing on different stages was second nature to these actors.

Actors must have enjoyed the adoration they received from the local public.

Stars held court after the shows at Mrs. Wilkes Stagedoor Inn. One report states that Joan Fontaine thrilled locals when she rode around in her Rolls Royce. Vivian Vance glittered at the Weirs Beach police officer’s ball during her stay in the area.

During the 1950s, some local people who loved the theatre invited the stars and casts of actors, along with Wilkes and his crew, to opening night parties.

Did Johnson like the Lakes Region enough to buy a summer place in the area, or was he simply visiting? It is hard

to know, but it is an indication of how the Playhouse stars enjoyed the area.

One notable star was Gypsy Rose Lee. When she performed at the Playhouse in 1956, it’s sure people from all walks of life lined up for tickets.

In the early 1960s, the New Stagedoor Inn became the Playhouse Inn, with a Back Stage Dining Room and Curtain Call Lounge. Stars such as Ann Southern visited the lounge after a summer performance in 1963.

Eventually, Wilkes left the summer theater, and other producers stepped in to keep the curtain rising at the old barn playhouse. In the 1970s, when he performed in Shenandoah and Man of La Mancha, John Raitt was a favorite with audiences.

From 1970 to 1974, stars were in many plays, and the atmosphere dazzled. In 1970, a few stars were Joan Fontaine in Relatively Speaking, Julie Newmar in Dames at Sea, Van Johnson in Boeing, Boeing, and Betty Grable in Born Yesterday.

A full-page ad for the July 11 to 16, 1960 booklet of the play Two for the Seesaw offered support from The Alberg restaurant and Alberg Shop.

A new producer, Eloise Armen, came on the scene in the 1970s and changed the theatre’s name to the Gilford Playhouse. She ran the theatre for some time, and after she left, the shows continued.

On the 25th anniversary of the theatre in 1974, John Astin and Patty Duke Astin, Sylvia Sydney (a star from Hollywood’s golden era), David McCallum, and Peggy Cass filled the summer lineup. Ticket sales were brisk, and the actors ensured the star quality that fans had come to expect.

In 1976, a young John Travolta appeared at the Playhouse in Bus Stop.

Although unknown then, Travolta, like many up-and-coming actors, gained valuable experience on the Gilford stage.

By the 1980s, a local group of people interested in seeing the theatre continue formed the Star Theatre Productions Voluntary Association. The non-profit group hoped to revive summer theatre at the barn and kept the Gilford Playhouse name.

The old barn was still functional as a theatre, and although the years had seen producers come and go, the non-profit had high hopes to revive star entertainment in Gilford.

After two summers, rising costs and declining ticket sales meant the end of

the Playhouse. Audiences still wanted the dazzling, large-cast musicals of the past, but expenses were rising. Those prices reflected the money necessary to carry off a big production.

The old barn theatre had finally run its course. The Gilford Playhouse closed, and soon, summer stock, with its stars, glitter, and entertainment, was no more.

When a community had an opera house, a variety of shows could be presented, put on by local groups or out-oftown, professional troupes and bands.

By the 1930s, many towns had a theatre and offered plays at times throughout the year. In the Newfound Lake area, the Wagon-Wheel Theatre actors took to the stage at the Pasquaney Music Colony to present “Laff That Off”. It was a summertime performance and probably targeted this time of year because the audience base would be wide, with vacationers and locals looking for an evening of entertainment. The July 19, 1934, edition of the Bristol Enterprise reported that the theatre was “packed to the doors on opening night” attesting to the desire for entertainment. Actors were from Philadelphia, and the play following was to be “Love in a Mist.”

The Pineland Theatre was a large barn-like building in Center Ossipee. It was used for entertainments of all kinds and contained a dance hall and a snack bar/coffee shop. Over the years, the theatre was also known as Pineland Hall and Pineland Mountainview Theatre.

It provided entertainment for the rural New Hampshire town. An advertisement in the June 16, 1938, edition of The Reporter newspaper told readers of the upcoming 5th Annual Carroll County Trade Show, which would feature mov-

ies with motion pictures and “amateur vaudeville.”

For a taste of what evening entertainment was like in the Lakes Region years ago, one need only look back to the days of Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens. The business was started by Jim Irwin, a musician who saw the opportunities for a business at Weirs Beach in the early 1920s.

He had a boat business, a wharf, and a nightclub. When his original dance hall burned about 1925, he had to move his dances elsewhere. A large boat shed on the water fit his needs; putting a dance hall over the wharf was visionary, and it was an instant success.

When it comes to outdoor music, which has been enjoyed by people for generations, Moulton’s Band of Sanbornton is the longest continuously running community band in New Hampshire, starting in 1889. The band was talented, with local musicians performing for the public every year.

Across the United States, community bands were sometimes offshoots of former military bands, and there were many cornet bands after the Civil War. The Sanbornton Cornet Band practiced wherever it found room, such as in a blacksmith shop. As the band grew, it

needed a better practice location and eventually began to meet at the town library.

In 1889, Charles Moulton became the director of the band and felt everyone should have a chance to play with the group; thus, he opened the band for all instruments and musicians. Perhaps in gratitude for helping keep the group going, the band took Moulton’s name. It gave those with musical ability the opportunity to get away from their day-today lives and show their skills playing a flute, horn, or drums for enjoyment.

Sons and fathers were band members, but after World War II, students joined the band with more frequency.

By 1954, the band allowed women to join, and later it opened up to musicians of all ages. The adults gave the band a mature talent while the students added energy and new skills.

Moulton’s Band is still well-known in the area and performs in many towns around the Lakes Region. Currently, the band does parades and concerts during the summer.

Meredith League Presents Chain Bracelet and Leather Bag Classes Join the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Saturday, May 30, from 10 am – 12 pm for a Sterling Chain No-Solder Bracelet Class with jewelry artist Deborah Ryan.

In this one-day workshop, students will learn the skills to make a beautiful handmade chain for a bracelet or necklace using pliers and sterling silver wire.

Two types of chain will be shown, plus a demo of how to add a center bead, squiggle, or spiral. You will also make a hook-and-eye clasp so you can wear your new bracelet when you’re done!

Tuition is $30 per student, plus a $30 materials fee, payable in cash or check to the instructor on the day of class.

Depending on the styles they choose, students will be able to make and take home one to two bags of their own creation. Please bring a bagged lunch and drink, as students will be given a lunch break.

Creative Spirit Shines with Galleries, Public Art and a New Art Walk Experience

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Meredith is among the most popular summer destinations in the Lakes Region. This is because there is a lot to do and see in the charming lakeside town: a wide range of shopping, dining and music experiences all within walking distance to Lake Winnipesaukee.

There is a definite “creative” feeling in Meredith and lots of artists live within the area or seek out the streets and waterfronts for great places to paint. Add to that the popular Meredith Sculpture Walk which is a project of the Greater Meredith Program, featuring first-rate sculptures peppered throughout the town, and Meredith has it all.

To add to these many aspects that make Meredith an art community, eight galleries in the town have banded together as a collective to support one another.. They also work on ways to bring art to the Meredith community and beyond.

An effort is currently underway for the Winnipesaukee Art Walk, an ongoing event that is just what its name says: a way for visitors to Meredith to access all galleries in the town and get a bonus treat of something delicious from a group of participating restaurants.

Part of the effort of the group will be the Winnipesaukee First Friday Art Walk on the first Friday of each month from 4 to 7 pm. The monthly event will offers visitors a chance to go to all the galleries with the added enticement of a raffle. The First Friday Raffle (held each month with all galleries open) will include a $100 gift certificate as a first prize and a $60 gift certificate second prize. Raffle winners names will be drawn at the First Friday event reception. (To kick off the art receptions, the First Friday Art Walk is scheduled for Friday, June 5 from 4 to 7 pm.)

and as you go to each Meredith participating gallery, you will get your card stamped. You will have two weeks to get all eight galleries to stamp your card. Then, you will hand your completed stamped card to the restaurant of your choice for a special offer.”

The restaurants currently participating (with more to be added) include Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant, Frog Rock Tavern, and The Breeze, all located in Meredith. Specials, for example, offer such things as Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant, where you can purchase an entrée and after showing your stamped card, get a free dessert. Other restaurants will have their own stamp card specials.

“Our main goal,” explains Vinnie Hale of Hale & Moreau Gallery, “is to increase awareness of art in the area. I got the original idea for the Art Walk by visiting ocean towns where there is a big art presence and influence. I saw there was a lot of collaboration going on in those towns. In Meredith, there is the Shop Main Street effort. It isn’t competitive, but rather a way for businesses to help each other. Visitors to Meredith will learn about the Winnipesaukee Art Walk a number of ways: cards and flyers will be available at information centers, and a website is in the works. Alternately, should a visitor be in one of the eight participating art galleries, they will see or be told about the stamp card which helps creates an awareness of the walk. \“We want visitors to take time to browse the galleries,” adds Denise Kirk of the Meredith Fine Craft Gallery/ League of NH Craftsmen. “The Meredith League shop has been in town for over 60 years. We have, for example, a wide range of handcrafted items ranging from pottery, jewelry, glass, fiber art, metal work, hand-turned wood, garden sculptures, stained glass, prints and much more.”

Another participant in the Winnipesaukee Art Walk is Andrew Eaton, woodturner and owner of The Art of Turning at 5 Main Street in the heart of downtown Meredith. His business offers something different for the Art Walk, and visitors will find all sorts of handmade wooden items in the gallery shop. He is enthusiastic about the Art Walk and says this summer will be just the beginning. “This is just Phase One and we hope to continue doing the Art Walk year round. Phase One will run until around October with more to come,” he explains.

Each gallery offers something different, from the style of paintings, prints, photography, sculpture and more. Also, individual galleries feature a variety of artists who paint their own versions of landscapes, portraits, still life and more.

If there is an interest in owning art of the Lakes Region, it is surely among the galleries on the Art Walk.

Those who want to immerse themselves in the fine work at Meredith art galleries are in for a treat this summer when they pick up their stamp card and step into the world of creativity and beauty at each location.

Topping this off, after a day or more of gallery browsing and shopping, participants can stop at an area restaurant for a meal with the bonus of a special when presenting a completed stamp card.

Meredith is among the most popular destination towns in the Lakes Region.

The creative spirit in the area only adds to the diversity of things to do and see and a great reason to visit this summer.
