Coffee, Tea, and More at The Mug Club, Chocorua Photos and Story

by Abby Scott Last fall, members of the Chocorua Community Church got together to answer the question: how can the relationship between the church and the community be strengthened? In those meetings, The Mug Club – a community café serving up coffee, tea, and baked goods on weekday mornings – was born. According to church trustee, Susan Staple Smith, the church wanted to create a communitygathering place. “We wanted to be able to share [our beautiful building] with [our] community,” she says. In the few months that The Mug Club has been operating, Erica Boynton, Program Director at the church, says The Mug Club has “grown from one to two [people] a day, to six to 12 a day – people are bringing their friends.”

But even with the growth they’ve experienced, The Mug Club’s doors are always open and welcoming.

As a Chocorua native, I wanted to see what this community café was like for myself, so one June morning I decided to stop by and get to know The Mug Club.

The moment I pulled in to the parking lot at Chocorua Community Church, I knew I was in for a great morning.

I’d hardly even stepped out of my car when a couple greeted me with a smile, asking if I was there for The Mug Club.

At the edge of the room is a table with coffee, an assortment of teas, and all the fixings, and next to it on an island that separates the café room from a small kitchen is a spread of freshly baked raspberry cream cheese pastries. Erica assures me that The Mug Club always has a selection of gluten free baked goods, too. I grab a cup of tea, excited to see that they have my favorite brand of Earl Grey, and settle down at one of the tables.

The room is filled with everyone from a 97 year-old WWII veteran to a visiting grandson to a Shi-Tzu pup named Oreo, and everyone makes sure I feel right at home. Erica sits with me, excited

The Mug Club is in a sunny room in the side of the church, with a separate and accessible entrance. Tables are scattered throughout the room with yellow floral tablecloths, fresh flowers on top, and an inviting couch and chairs surround a coffee table in the middle of the room. On a Monday morning, when I happened to stop by, Mug Club members can be found catching up on

local community. On the coffee table are an assortment of local papers (I was excited to see Sweet 16 had made the cut) and a commemorative book for Tamworth’s 250th Anniversary. For sale, too, are anniversary commemorative mugs; proceeds benefit the K.A. Brett School’s eighth graders, and mugs are available all summer. Erica says that the Club has become something of a hub for making community connections: “Some people have realized they’re neighbors!” Year round and seasonal residents of the Chocorua and Greater-Tamworth community – both churchgoers and non-churchgoers alike – come together over a cup of coffee to catch up on local gossip, learn about upcoming events in the town, or make use of the games and coloring books the Club has stocked.

Throughout the spring, The Mug Club hosted a variety of events besides their usual weekday morning coffee as a part of their Coffee & Creativity series. So far they’ve had art events hosted by local artist Kathy Johnson and live music by local musicians.

Erica says she’d never seen The Mug Club as full as it was on the live music morning; the Club’s room was “packed with 30 people,” and the next events are sure to draw even larger crowds.

The Coffee & Creativity Series will be taking a break for the summer, but it will be back in the fall with art, music, fiber arts, and NH Humanities programs about local history. The Mug Club is always open to new and creative ideas to make their gatherings fun, so be sure to keep an ear and eye out for new upcoming events. I know I will!

In just a few months, The Mug Club has become a meeting place for community members of all ages, and as Kathie Dyrenforth, Chocorua Community Church trustee and Mug Club frequenter, remarks, all the problems of the world are solved in just one morning in the sun-soaked café room. “It’s such a great meeting place,” she says. “It’s like a family!”

Throughout my visit, the Mug Club “family” made one thing abundantly clear: the Club is for everyone.

Whether you’re just passing through Chocorua on your way to the White Mountains, are a Mug Club frequenter with your own mug waiting for you every morning, or a local looking for a great coffee spot, The Mug Club has something for everyone.

I left my visit at The Mug Club that morning already planning the next time I’d stop by for a drink, a pastry, and good conversation.

The Mug Club is located at Chocorua Community Church, 40 Deer Hill Road, just off Route 16 in Chocorua Village, and is open weekdays from 9 to 11 am. Check the Chocorua Community Church Facebook for updates, or contact Erica at 323-7186, programdirector@chocoruachurch. org, or stop by the church between 9 am and 1 pm on weekdays. The Mug Club is for everyone, so bring your mug and your appetite for locally baked goods and good conversation. The Chocorua Community Church also has two meeting and function rooms available for reservation; you can grab your coffee and pastry and host a business/ organization meeting all in one place.

Freedom Old Home Week is an event locals and summer visitors look forward to and plan for months in advance. This year’s Old Home Week runs from Friday, July 29 through Sunday, August 7; every day is packed with activities and all are invited to attend. The big event at the start of the week is the parade on Saturday, July 30, which starts at 10 am in the center of Freedom.

Music by the local favorite band, Mango Groove, starts the entertainment at 9:30 am next to the village store while you browse all of the town’s offerings. This year’s Old Home Week theme is “Freedom”. 2016 Old Home Week merchandise, including this year’s t-shirt, sweatshirt and commemorative tile, will be on sale on Parade Day, and at events during the week.

by Dan Smiley When your kids are almost 5 and 7 and you happen to live 30 minutes from Story Land, you can’t help but end up going nearly every year. In fact, the annual season pass purchase is a great value for our working family budget. One of the many great attractions our boys enjoy most each year is Loopy Lab. This Nerf®-style, ball-pit allows children a variety of play activities that kids from 3 to 13 really enjoy. The covered dome structure allows mom, dad and the grandparents

to get out of the sun for a little while too. It’s perfect. Attached to the side of the dome is the Imagination Theatre which annually presents a magician.

In the last 5 or 6 years I’ve seen them all; repeatedly. Which is why I was so pleasantly surprised by this year’s performer.

Summer Camps Where the Lakes and Mountains Meet ~ How Is a Parent to Choose?

Founded to preserve and protect natural resources and cultural history, they have proved to be uniquely American glue that brings a diverse people together.

The same generation that caught the vision for shared outdoor space is roughly the same generation that invented the traditional youth camp, a uniquely American experience that brings children into nature to teach them useful skills and develop the character and habits of responsible citizens. If a little fun happens, too, so be it!

A recent survey of the Sweet 16 corridor, roughly from Rochester to Tamworth and points east and west of NH Route 16, indicates the region may boast the world’s richest saturation of youth camps/per square mile, or at

least in the state of New Hampshire. Of the 91 camps listed on www.NHcamps. org, 16, nearly 20 percent, are located within minutes of Route 16. Add in camps on the east shore of Lake Winnipesaukee—just a stone’s throw beyond the survey territory, and the share raises to 30 percent.

Summer camps shape lives, and to an extent, camps also shape towns.

Five camps call Freedom, NH, with a population of 1489, home. If all bunks at all five camps are filled at any single point in the summer, the town’s population is doubled—and that’s not even including staff in the count.

Read the mission statement of any camp. It’s bound to include “develop,” “shape,” “change,” “mold,” or another verb of change, but each camp focuses uniquely on what is to be shaped or the best vehicle to effect the change.

There are several YMCA camps in the region. YMCA Camp Coney Pine in Rochester is a day camp for children ages 6 to 16. Its stated goal is to promote “positive childhood development through the core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.” Overnight camp YMCA Camp Huckins in Freedom is a two-week camp for girls who have

not yet turned 15 to develop leadership qualities through strenuous athletics, like swimming, sailing, windsurfing, horseback riding, water skiing, archery, tennis and initiative games.

Camps with religious affiliations often encourage children to see God in nature and those around them. Camp Calumet offers one- and two-week sessions for boys and girls. Camp programming “strives in everyday events to teach God’s love…” Campers build skills in a wide variety of sports, arts and crafts, pottery and jewelry making, drama, and animal care on the shore of Lake Ossipee. The camp also offers campsites and programming for families in summer and year-round. In addition, Calumet has the distinction of having been author Dan Brown’s camp when he was a child.

Camp Marist in Effingham views itself as a “means to an end in the overall growth of your child.” Run by the Marist Brothers, an international teaching order of the Catholic Church, its co-ed campers (up to age 16) come for two, three, four, five or seven-week sessions. Through fun but challenging activities like watersports, horseback riding, go-karts and tennis, campers are encouraged to grow in faith, mind, and body, and to build strong and lasting friendships.

The goal of Camp Sentinel, with a mile of frontage on crystal clear Dan Hole Pond at the foot of the Ossipee Mountains in Tuftonboro, is to create a “welcoming environment for Christian relationship building and spiritual renewal. Within the stillness of God’s creation and through the guidance of the staff, people are moved from discovery into authentic relationship with others and with Jesus Christ.”

One- and two-week sessions are offered for children and youth, with additional programming for adults and families.

Traditional camp activities and offcampus adventures are supplemented by a ropes course, climbing wall and team competition.

Boys and girls ages 8 to 13 experience onsite challenges in sports, water activities, crafts and drama, while 14 to 17 year-olds sharpen skills and character in four to 21 day adventure trips in New England and Canada.

Anecdotal evidence indicates that the area’s co-ed camps tend to skew toward female enrollments. Perhaps that is because there are several allmale camps. Camp Tecumseh in Moultonboro has sought to “Make Good Boys Better!” since 1903.

Campers register for three-and-a-half or seven-week sessions. The 350-acre camp builds character through athletics, drama and day and overnight trips into the White Mountains. It is certainly a camp where the hills may be alive with the sound of music: a highlight every season is the all-camp production of a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta.

Allusion to Native American roots is common in camps, often evidenced by quasi-native American rituals and names like Tecumseh and Camp Tohkomeupog at Purity Springs in East Madison. A traditional camp for boys ages 8 to 15, sessions run from two to seven weeks and feature adventures in hiking, canoeing, rock-climbing and mountain biking.

Perhaps unique to this listing, Camp Cody in Freedom was inspiration for an award-winning movie. It sprang from the experiences of screenwriter and Camp Cody alum Bradley Gallo.

SWEET 16 Naming his camp “Kobie,” Gallo tells a tale of the efforts of a counselor and his camp-loyal charges that seek to save their beloved camp from the greedy clutches of its new owner. The film won an award for “Best Cinematography” at the Angel Citi Film Festival in 2001.

The real Camp Cody has been owned by the same family since 1926 and offers two to four week sessions on the shores of Lake Ossipee for boys and girls aged 7-16.

Camp Robin Hood’s beloved nickname, “The Realm,” makes it sound like it should be in a movie.

The co-ed camp is on Lake Ossipee and nestled at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest where it is said that campers, staff and alumni believe “There is magic in the trees.”

Programming for boys and girls from ages 7 to 16 seeks to help them find the magic of “friendship, independence, self-confidence and success” in two, four or seven-week sessions.

A camp celebrating diversity is Luethi-Peterson Camp, l in Freedom.

At the site, 27 campers from broad national backgrounds gather to cultivate “international understanding…through crafts, sports, music and language study.” In a departure from most other camps in the area, campers are expected to take responsibility for their camp experience, as well as their fellow campers. Summer Events at Tin Mountain Conservation Center It’s summer at Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany.

Programs focus on the outdoor world and all are welcome to attend the workshops, walks and other events.

On Wednesday, July 27 from 7 to 10 pm, Moths of the Pine Barrens will be the topic and Jeff Lougee of the Nature Conservancy will lead the evening. Jeff will take guests on a trip through the Pine Barrens in search of the unique moths that are found there. You are sure to hear some of the other unique wildlife of the area, such as whip poor wills and nighthawks.

Empty Skies: The Decline of Aerial Insectivores will be presented on Thursday, July 28 at 7 pm.

Aerial insectivores are birds that feed primarily on insects captured in flight, and include nightjars, swifts, flycatchers and swallows.

Many of these species, particularly swallows and the Chimney Swift, are experiencing significant population declines both in NH and across the Northeast, and sometimes across their entire ranges. This program provides an overview of these species’ biology and population trends, and delves into what we know – or don’t know – about the causes of the declines. Pam Hunt will lead the program; she holds a B.S. in biology from Cornell University, M.A. in zoology from the University of Montana, and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth

In her current position as Avian Conservation Biologist, she works closely with NH Fish and Game to coordinate and prioritize bird research and monitoring in the state. She authored NH’s “State of the Birds” report and coordinated the “NH Dragonfly Survey,” a five-year project that mapped distributions of these insects throughout the state, and she remains active in the dragonfly field.

The 109-mile route for the Century Ride travels through fragrant spruce-fir and majestic northern hardwood forests, across pastoral farm fields and along streams with stunning views of the alpine peaks in the Range. Abbreviated 44- and 88-mile routes provide wonderful rides for those wanting a little less than a Century. The Century is completely supported with five aid stations along the 109-mile course (three on the 88-mile and two on the 44mile), support vehicles with ham radio operators, and a bike repair support vehicle. The Mt. Washington Century Ride continues to grow in popularity, with participants from as far away as the West Coast taking part. Riders are always pleased with the route and support received.
