Safe Summer Boating Compliments of the Marine Patrol

There are plenty of people like me who live in the lakes region for a very good reason – we love our lakes!!

New Hampshire is well known for it’s many glorious lakes, and according to Wikipedia, The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services lists 959 natural lakes and reservoirs in the Granite State. Their sizes range from one of the smallest, strangely named The Fourth Connecticut Lake, at 1.8 acres (also the source of the Connecticut River), to the majestic Lake Winnipesaukee, covering an impressive 44,586 acres.

Residence and summer visitors count the days until “iceout”, signaling the ability of the M/S Mount Washington cruise ship to dock at every one of its ports of call along the coast of the Big Lake. The start of the Mount Washington’s daily tours is our cue to take our own boat out of storage, brush off the cobwebs and begin our season of fun cruising from one end of the lake to another.

A popular misconception is that because you are out on the water, anything goes. A body of water isn’t the Wild West. If it’s illegal while driving your car, it’s illegal when operating a boat. (Though unlike the open container laws on land, your passengers are free to enjoy an alcoholic beverage while the driver of a boat must not be impaired in any way.)

scofflaws from ruining our day. In a conversation with Sergeant Joshua Dirth, he emphasized the need for boaters to take the time to think things through when out on a lake.

He added, “The water can be very unforgiving”.

The Sergeant explained to me that in 2010 there were 2,385 calls for service, which included complaints of reckless driving and noise. Last summer I watched as the Marine Patrol rescued a sailor from a large overturned sailboat. I’ve seen boats stopped on the lake, but I’m never sure why since I’m not allowed to bring my boat close enough to hear any conversation!

One of my pet peeves while boating is how close other boats sometimes come to my boat. Then I remembered from my Marine Patrol boating safety course last summer, that it’s up to all of us, including me, to stay 150 feet from other boats, docks, swim rafts, mooring fields, swimmers, designated swimming areas, floats AND the shore, when I’m traveling above headway speed.

slowest speed necessary to maintain steerage. I double checked this information with Sergeant Dirth to make sure I had it right.

There has been a lot of discussion about the speed limit on the lake.

As I boater, and a cautious (OK, maybe a little bit lily-livered), one at that, I’ve always felt that the speed limit was too high. But even now that the maximum speed is down to 45 mph during the day and 30 mph after sunset, it still feels fast to me when someone goes speeding by (especially when they are less than 150 feet away!). I can’t help but wonder how fast they are actually traveling. If you’d like to know the speed limits on the lakes you travel, check online, look at the postings at your boat launch, or ask at the nearest marina.

The Marine Patrol has many more duties than just stopping speeders; they are also responsible for enforcing state boating laws and patrolling the waterways. One of their most important roles is that of conducting boating safety education classes. Because of the availability

of their courses, I was able to compile enough knowledge to take the helm of our boat (and not be forever relegated to the passenger seat) and fully understand and appreciate the laws of the lake. I’m not yet comfortable traveling the entire lake because I haven’t studied the maps as well as my husband.

For the moment I’m content to stay in the bay when I’m at the wheel.

I do know that if we ever have a problem out on Lake Winnipesaukee, we can call for help. Sergeant Dirth says that last year there were no less than 140 calls for boating emergencies.

And last but not least. The Marine Patrol runs a “watered down” version of the lost and found. In the summer of 2010, Officers collected, or have taken possession of a number of found objects, including 20 rowboats, 7 canoes, 5 paddle-boats, 3 life jackets, 2 water-skis, 1 set of diving equipment and a partridge in a pear tree. No really, I’m kidding about the water-skis.

David T. Barrett, Director of the Division of Safety Services confirms the necessity of mandatory boater education. According to Gina Carman, Administrative Supervisor at the Division of Safety Services in Gilford, New Hampshire, Mr. Barrett’s philosophy

is “Compliance through education and not intimidation”. The Marine Patrol is not out there to hassle you.

If you don’t yet have your boating license, the schedule for Marine Patrol safe boating courses can be found online at marinepatrol.nh.gov or at boatingeducation.nh.gov, a list of classes appears on pages 44 and 45 of this magazine. You can also call for boating education information at 603-267-7256.The goal of the Marine Patrol is to make the courses readily available, informational and fun. I don’t know how they did it, but on the day I took my coursework, it was pouring rain - I didn’t have to waste a summer day indoors. Apparently they have the power!

The Marine Patrol officers on our lakes want to help make your summer boating experience as safe and happy as possible. If you are already a licensed boat operator, you can aide in that effort by reviewing your boating course information from time to time. It does make a difference.

Have a great time out on the lake this summer and don’t forget – KEEP YOUR DISTANCE; I’m still new at this.

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Picture this: It’s summer time, you have just spent a perfect day on the lake with your family. As the sun sinks behind the mountains, the kids are clamoring for dinner. Cries of “We’re hungry!” fill the air.

Here’s another scenario: You have spent a beautiful day on your boat. It’s just you and your special someone. It could be a first date, an anniversary or a romantic Sunday afternoon on the lake. To top off the lake excursion, you want to take that special person out for a relaxing, romantic meal. The key to both these scenarios is finding a restaurant with boat docking or with public docking nearby.

Happily for boaters, dining out by boat offers many choices sure to please everyone. From pizza to chili to cheeseburgers to yummy ice cream and gourmet fare, head your boat toward any one of a number of towns for great dining by boat. Some restaurants are now even offering dockside take-out service; call ahead to place your order and restaurant staff will meet you at the docks with your food in hand.

Alton Bay is a bustling town during the summer and early fall months. One reason for this is the easy accessibility by boat to businesses ranging from real estate to marinas to groceries and the ever-popular ice cream and restaurant stops.

Shibley’s at the Pier is open seven days a week starting in mid April until October (the restaurant is also open during the winter) and is accessible by boat. Shibley’s at the Pier sits directly on Lake Winnipesaukee and has two to three boat slips for docking; the town docks are a mere 15 feet away.

The restaurant serves sandwiches for lunch, and dining for dinner is casual. Call 875-3636 for information.

Many people mark the official arrival of summer by the opening of Pop’s Clam Shell Restaurant in Alton Bay (the eatery is open weekends in May and June and seven days a week in July and August). Pop’s is a mere stroll across Rt. 11 from the town docks, serving burgers, fries and lots of seafood, as well as ice cream. The eatery has indoor and rooftop dining (with great views of the bay area). Boaters can choose to either eat at Pop’s or carry their food take-out style to their boat.

If lobster is your passion and you find yourself in Alton Bay, head to Sandy Point Restaurant for what many say is the best lobster around. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner during the summer, Sandy Point is located on 186 Mount Major Hwy. in Alton Bay. Limited boat docking is available; call 875-6001 for details.

There is an ice cream eatery called Shibley’s Soft & Hard Ice Cream across the street from their Pier establishment. This place is hopping in the summer for take-out ice cream, burgers and seafood. There is a small indoor seating area and outdoor picnic tables. Boaters can grab ice cream here and head back to the boat by a quick walk across Rt. 11.

If you are craving Chinese food while out on the lake, dock at the Alton Bay town docks and take a quick walk to J. P. China Restaurant and Lounge. The eatery serves Szechwan and Cantonese cuisine and is open year round. Call 875-8899 for information or to place a take-out order ready to go when you arrive.

Who doesn’t love a diner breakfast or lunch? The Olde Bay Diner in Alton Bay is situated directly across the street from Shibley’s Ice Cream and is a quick walk from the dock area.

Serving hearty breakfasts and lunches, the tiny eatery is open for breakfast and lunch year round; call ahead for hours at 875-3700.

For those on the go who are craving a delicious sandwich or soup or baked goods, Amilyne’s Corner Market, Bakery &

Deli in Alton Bay is just the place. Take out items are always made fresh to order; if you are planning a party on the boat, you can get pastries or a cake here. Call 875-8888.

Not far away in the Gilford/West Alton area, stop at Ames Farm Inn on Rt. 11 for breakfast or lunch in a charming country inn.

Diners love the delicious, homemade breakfasts and lunches served from June till Labor Day. You can dock your boat at the farm if you are dining there, but call ahead to find out about dock availability at 293-4321.

Looking for a delicious, relaxing meal? Head to the Glendale town docks where you can dock your boat for up to three hours. That will allow ample time to dine for lunch or dinner at the Lyon’s Den Restaurant and Tavern, which is a few steps away from the docks. Lunch and dinner is served year round; call 293-8833.

Laconia and the Weirs Beach area have many lake-access eateries; some have their own docks for diners.

In Weirs Beach, the breakfasts and lunch menu can’t be beat at Donna Jean’s Diner. Located at 1208 Weirs Boulevard, the restaurant offers boat docking on Weirs channel. Breakfast is served all day and all menu items are available for take out. Call 366-5996.

Boaters love the Naswa Resort in Weirs Beach for its great dock facilities and indoor dining as well as casual dining and socializing at the outdoor NAZBar Beach Bar and Grill.

The restaurant and outdoor bar are open Memorial Day through October. When the weather turns chilly, the Naswa fires up the outdoor heaters so the fun can continue into the fall at the waterfront bar. A giant tent protects NAZBar Beach Bar and Grill customers on rainy days. Call 366-4341.

There are many dining options a short walk away from the Weirs Beach town docks. You can get pizza on the boardwalk, or Mexican plates piled high with delicious food at the Crazy Gringo on the Boulevard area.

Heading to Meredith, the dining by boat options are many.

The Common Man family of restaurants offers boat pick up of food. Says Sean Brown of the Common Man family, “We encourage pick up of meals by boat. Many boaters love to dine in their boat on the lake. They pull up at our docks, pick up their orders and get back out on the lake quickly.”

Dock your boat and walk just steps to the Town Dock Restaurant, a part of the Common Man family, at 289 DW Highway. There is lakeside outdoor seating, free tie-ups for those who come by boat if you would rather not park at the town docks and a sandy outdoor Tiki Bar. This is the place for seafood, salads, burgers, hotdogs and ice cream to name but a few of the menu favorites. Call 279-3445.

Another Common Man family member eatery is the Lakehouse located inside Church Landing just a short walk on Rt. 3/DW Highway. Lakehouse serves continental breakfast, lunch and dinner and a sumptuous Sunday brunch. You can enjoy drinks in the Lakehouse lounge area before a relaxing dinner. Call 279-5221 for information.

Craving Italian food after a day of boating on the lake? Head to Lago on Meredith Bay, Route 25 (docking is nearby at the town docks or at Lago). Lago includes a lounge, waterfront seating or dine on the patio during warmer weather and watch all the boats on Meredith Bay. Call 279-2253.

Looking for something unusual and fun when it comes to dining by boat? Pull up and dock at the town docks in Meredith and walk across Rt. 3 (please use the crosswalks because this is one busy town in the summer!) to Camp, located in the Chase House at Mill Falls. This fun little eatery offers dinners nightly with everything from Apple Fried Chicken to Camp Crackers!

For great pizza, visit Giuseppe’s Showtime Pizzeria located in Mill Falls, right across the street from the Meredith town docks. Also in Mill Falls Marketplace, the Waterfall Café serves breakfast and lunch.

breakfast and lunch. On Plymouth Street, George’s Diner can’t be beat for homemade baked goods, burgers, sandwiches and dinners. For a relaxed lunch or dinner in a unique setting, visit Mame’s Restaurant on Plymouth Street. Mame’s is located in a historic, restored brick home and offers tasty dinners and casual lunches.

On Main Street in Meredith, you will find more restaurants just a brief walk away from the town docks. There is the Broken Antler serving lunches and dinners; Phu Jee for Chinese food and the Village Perk for coffee, baked goods and lunches.

Center Harbor is a pretty town with public docking at the Center Harbor town docks. The pretty town offers everything from ice cream to breakfasts to bagels delivered to the docks to elegant dinners.

If you are on the go or craving a hotdog, you will want to stop at Hot Dog Bob in Wolfeboro. For many, Bob is a fixture at the dock area where his fun little hotdog cart offers great dogs and drinks during the summer.

or many people, when you mention the phrase, “The Lakes Region,” an image of Lake Winnipesaukee with its hustle, bustle and heavy boat traffic is what tends to come to mind. But there are several other lakes in the Lakes Region which have their own unique characteristics and offer a quieter charm, and if the crowds and busy atmosphere of the Big Lake don’t appeal to you, Newfound Lake in Bristol may just be the place you are looking for to spend a quiet, relaxing day on the lake.

Newfound Lake is a spring-fed glacial lake with the reputation of having some of the clearest, cleanest, and deepest water of any of the lakes in the state of New Hampshire. The lake, which measures about 180 feet deep at its deepest point, encompasses 4,106 acres, stretching seven miles long with a width of about 2 1/2/ miles. It is the fifth largest lake in the state, and its 22 miles of shoreline touches the towns of Bristol, Bridgewater, Hebron, and Alexandria.

The shoreline is ringed with numerous seasonal cottages and homes, condominiums, one or two town

beaches reserved for residents, a State-owned public beach and park, private day camps for boys and girls, a marina, and several natural areas.

If you need any boating supplies, fuel, or accessories, or you want to rent a pontoon boat or a bow rider boat for the day, plan to stop at the only marina currently in operation on the lake, West Shore Marine at 315 West Shore Road. A full-service facility, West Shore Marine features a variety of power boats for sale or rent, fuel, a fullservice repair shop with certified boat mechanics, and a ship’s store stocked with accessories, including lake maps. West Shore Marine is also a registered agent for the State of New Hampshire if you need to apply for a temporary boating license.

If you prefer to rent a kayak or canoe, you can do so during July and August at Newfound Audubon Paradise Point, located on North Shore Road. They also provide life jackets, paddles, and maps. Beginner boaters should arrive 30 minutes early for instructions and orientation. You need

to call ahead at 744-3515 to reserve a canoe or kayak.

It’s a great way to investigate Hebron Marsh, which is Newfound Lake’s only marsh area, and it is noted for its wide variety of marsh birds, including herons.

The only public access boat ramp on Newfound Lake is located at beautiful Wellington State Park, a 204-acre area that features the largest freshwater swimming beach in the State Park system. The boat ramp is free and accessible 24-hours per day, and it is maintained

by New Hampshire Fish and Game. There is parking available.

The beach area of the park is open to the public from about mid-May until Labor Day for a small admission fee, and it features picnic tables, barbecue grills, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, a snack bar/gift shop, a lifeguard station, restrooms, and changing rooms. There are boat lanes at the beach that allow boater access to those who want to enjoy the beach and its facilities, but you do have to pay the nominal regular park admission fee.

by the State as part of Wellington State Park (Belle Island and Cliff Island), while the others are privately owned. Belle Island and Cliff Island are available for organized youth camping groups by reservation.

Fishermen love Newfound Lake, and you can find a variety of cold water fish in its pure depths, including salmon, small mouth bass, pickerel, lake trout, rainbow trout, and whitefish.

You do have to have a New Hampshire Fishing license, which you can purchase online from New Hampshire Fish and Game at www.wildlife.state.nh.us or from a registered agent (a list which you can also find on the same website).

Swimmers also find Newfound Lake a refreshing way to cool off on a hot summer’s day, whether you pull up to a beach area or just jump off your boat for a quick dip.

There is no lake-wide speed limit on Newfound, although there are a few restrictions and no-wake zones. The Newfound Lake Region Association, a group that works diligently to keep the lake and its watershed clean and pure, notes on their website that these restrictions include a 6 mph speed limit in the channel running in a general northeast to southwest direction between Cliff Island and Belle Island on the northwest and mainland on the southeast; a 6 mph limit in the channel between Mayhew Island and the mainland at Pikes Point; a no wake zone in Hebron Bay from the sandbar to the marsh area; and a no-wake zone in an area known as “Pop’s Cove.”

Jet skis are even more restricted. The State of New Hampshire RSA 270:74-a reads that jet skis “…are banned on Sanborn’s Bay, Hebron Bay, the area from Roger’s Point to Paradise Point between Hebron Bay and Sanborn’s Bay, Follansbee Cove, Hornet Cove and Pikes Bay. Ski craft may proceed, at headway speed only, through the above-mentioned areas to non-restricted areas….Ski craft shall be restricted to direct travel to and from shore to the main portion of the lake….No person shall operate a ski craft in the Southeast Cove other than to proceed directly to or from the main portion of the Lake.”

If you get hungry while you are out boating on Newfound Lake, you can pull your boat up to “The Big Catch,” a restaurant known for casual dining both indoors and outdoors that specializes in seafood and ice cream. The Big Catch is located at 150 Shore Drive, just off of Route 3-A in Bristol, and they are open seasonally.

For more elegant dining, the Inn at Newfound Lake welcomes boaters, and they provide a private dock for their boating customers. The Inn is open year-round for dinner from 5 – 9 p.m. During July and August, they serve dinner Tuesday – Sunday evenings; the rest of the year, they serve dinner from Wednesday – Sunday. A View From The Bridge of The Big Boat

When Jim Morash worked as a deck hand for the M/S Mount Washington as a youngster, he would have been surprised if he’d know that all these years later he would be in charge of the biggest, most recognizable motor ship to ever ply the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee.

These days, it’s hard to imagine the Mount without thinking of Jim; he has been at the job for a long time and has, with a strong, old-fashioned work ethic, made his way up from deck hand to pilot to captain.

Serving and training under some of the best and most knowledgeable captains around, Jim learned to pilot the big boat the correct way and he has years of memories of days and nights cruising the lake.

“When I started at a deck hand, I didn’t have any experience,” Jim remembers. “I trained on the Doris and the Sophie C (smaller vessels in the Mount’s fleet). When one of the captains retired I was asked to work on the Mount as a pilot. I spent 10 years working in the wheel house on the ship.”

The extensive training Jim received has served him well. After 10 years of service he was promoted to captain. It is a post he has held for 11 years and in that time he’s seen just about

everything one could imagine.

Because he spent summers on Lake Winnipesaukee as a child, Jim has a lifelong love of the area and the lake. “I have seen a lot,” Jim agrees. “Every day on the lake, people stop and wave to the Mount.

That never gets old. People in other boats wave at the passengers on the Mount and sometimes they realize they’ve have gotten too close to us. Then there are boaters who blatantly cut their bow or stern.”

He continues, “For example, when we back out of port, we need a lot of room.

If there is a boat moored in our path we have to go around it, which isn’t always easy.

If other boaters don’t move out of the way, we blast our horn as a warning. That usually, but not always, works!”

The Mount is busy from May until late October with day and evening cruises and Jim has worked it all. He recalls an all-night cruise that was a private charter for a school group. “We left the Weirs late at night. When we went through the Eagle Island narrows we didn’t expect to see any other boat lights at that late hour. Suddenly a light came up on our port side and then it disappeared. We had passengers come to the wheelhouse to

make sure we knew there had been a boat there.

“Well, it turned out to be three kids in their Dad’s boat. The reason they disappeared was because they ran the boat up onto Eagle Island.”

Jim’s first night as captain was served with Captain Leo O’Connell another Mount employee. They were bringing the Mount home from a dinner cruise when they saw a boat coming up very fast. The boat stopped suddenly and sure enough, it had hit rocks. “If the Mount hadn’t been there those people would have been stranded possibly for hours,” Jim says.

The Mount has had its share of boating situations as well. Jim recalls that when he was a deck hand in 1980, he saw the Mount get hung up on the boathouse when their generator went down and they lost power.

When it comes other boaters, Jim comments that most are well behaved. “A good boater will not want to mess with a ship as big as the Mount. We drive defensively. However, there are some stubborn boaters who expect us to move for them, which is not an easy thing to accomplish.”

Sail boaters also can be stubborn. Jim is amazed each summer that with all the room on the Big Lake, some boaters still go too fast and don’t drive safely.

As the Mount makes its daily trips around the lake, it passes many inhabited islands. Jim laughs as he shares, “The kids on Three Mile Island like to moon us! That seems to be a tradition.”

Many islanders come out of their summer homes to wave as the Mount passes or to ring a bell as a way of saying hello. That also never gets old and is a time-honored, friendly way of greeting one another on the lake.

Jim is not the only captain in the Mount’s fleet of employees.

There are five captains total during the season and they rotate during the week. “All together we have over 100 years of experience in the wheel house,” Jim says. “We try to keep our captains physically at the wheel not more than four-and-onehalf hours at a time. And we always have a captain and a pilot on duty.”

Many passengers step aboard the Mount each summer and fall, and emergencies do happen. “Yes, we have many pregnant women on our cruises,” Jim says. “I’ve never had to deliver a baby when we are out on a trip on the lake, but I’ve come close. We have excellent emergency response in place in the Lakes Region.”

When one thinks of all the things Jim has dealt with over the years, weather tops the list. However, as a seasoned captain of the Mount Jim shrugs when he comments, “Weather is weather.

We aren’t out during the major hurricanes and we aren’t out there in the winter.”

This accepting attitude about Lakes Region weather is probably because Jim grew up in Vermont where the wild weather equals and often surpasses that of NH. Accepting extreme weather conditions on the lake, however, does not mean that Jim and the other captains are lax in their duties.

Ever vigilant, Jim watches the weather conditions on the lake constantly when he is in the wheelhouse.

One helpful aspect of piloting the Mount during a severe storm on the lake is that there are very few boats out in a thunder or windstorm. “Once as a pilot I was out with Captain Welch,” Jim recalls. “It was a dinner cruise and the storm hit us fast. The rain was going sideways. It lasted just 10 minutes but it was so strong the wind tried to blow the stern around. After it passed, the conditions were beautiful.”

Getting married in the Lakes Region is the dream of many a bride and among the most sought-after wedding locations is aboard the Mount. Jim says they have had many weddings since they began offering the event service in the 1970s. “We now have two captains and a pilot that are JPs. We do about 15 weddings a year and it’s becoming more and more popular.”

Indeed, holding a ceremony and reception aboard the Mount is a truly unique experience for bride, groom and guests. It has its logistical issues, however, such as a bride running late. Jim laughs, “In this age of cell phones, the bride can always call us to say she’s running a few minutes late. We try to work with wedding parties, but we do have our limits on how long we can wait for a wedding party to arrive and still keep on our schedule.

“Normally, it’s not the wedding party who are late but rather an out-of-town guest that may have gotten lost. One time we even had the wedding cake miss the boat!”

Such occurrences are not a problem, because those who miss the Mount can simply drive to the next stop and hop aboard there.”

As well as weddings, the Mount offers proms and other group outings. “We do three to six proms every year,” Jim explains.

“Charters and functions are big nowadays.”

Each and every trip for the Mount must include food and while it might seem impossible to transport the delicious food prepared by the chefs in the Mount’s land-based kitchen, the staff have it down to a science.

“Like everything else we do, it’s simply a matter of logistics.

One thing that helps is our meals are not cooked to order, but

rather served buffet style. All food is made on shore, although we do have a kitchen and a chef on duty on the Mount. “ Looking ahead, Jim sees a positive future for the M/S Mount Washington. “Indeed, our future is bright. The Mount’s hull and interior are in great shape. We have new engines, which is a huge weight off our shoulders. It means the vessel will be secure for years to come. We pulled the ship ashore last fall and painted it. It’s nice and clean and really spiffed up.”

The company is geared for the years ahead. Jim, when asked if there has ever been a female Mount Washington captain, says, “No, but I foresee it in the near future. I think I will see it in my lifetime of service. There are more and more women who have trained at maritime academies and are skilled. We need someone with the training and also knowledge of Lake Winnipesaukee.

“This job never gets boring, but I must admit I get tired by the end of a long season. When the season starts with the Shakedown Cruise, I am always eager and excited to get out on the water, but by late fall I am ready for a break. I take this job and my responsibilities very seriously.”

As he speaks of the things he’s seen from the wheelhouse and the long history of the M/S Mount Washington, Jim becomes reflective. “You know, we are just stewards of the vessel. At some point I will semi-retire. As with all the captains of the Mount who came before me, I will pass the wheel to a new generation.”

The idea of offering lake charters was new to Mel and Tina Borrin when they started Latitude 43 Luxury Charter Cruises a few years ago. “We had a major business in Center Harbor that we sold. It was a real estate and brokerage business. After we sold the business, we had a boat custom built for us. It took a year to get it completed and after we had it I was sitting looking out at the boat in its dock one day,” Mel recalls. “I told Tina I thought we should try to do something with the boat, and that’s where the idea for offering a boat charter business began.”

It was a natural for the Borrins, who had 40 years of experience on Winnipesauke and a willingness to

share their boat and lake knowledge with others. The first year of operation saw Latitude 43 do a few charters; the Borrins had a lot of fun and met some great people.

The second year, the Borrins had a brochure printed and the charter business continued to grow. Now, about five years later, the business has undergone a big change. The original Latitude boat was sold and the Borrins will, this spring, launch a new custom-built boat that was constructed in Rockland, Maine. The 34-foot boat will be available this summer for luxury charters by the hour, half hour and full day. With capacity for 10, the new boat will take passengers all around the lake for fun and informative excursions.

Vacation outings on the boat are popular and it’s a great way to celebrate any event from a family reunion group outing to a romantic sunset trip on the water. “We do weddings onboard and I have married a few couples. People need to give us advanced notice for weddings,” Mel says.

with the Borrins. “We have the ability to pick people up at lakefront resorts around the region and more than 50 percent of the time we can get to homes being rented to vacationers and cottage colonies to pick up charters.”

Personalized lake tours offer passengers a chance to really see the lake. “Some people just want family time on the lake and have us stop out on the water so they can swim. Others want a full commentary about the lake as we make our way around the Lakes Region,” Mel explains. “Those who have never been on the lake enjoy a trip towards Alton Bay and Wolfeboro with commentary. We go into places you just can’t get to in a larger boat. For longer tours we allow the passengers to get off the boat and shop when we dock in Alton Bay and Wolfeboro.”

called, can be seen plying the waters from late May until late October with day and evening cruises. Passengers can step aboard and watch the lake world go by at a leisurely pace as the Mount travels to Wolfeboro, Meredith, Center Harbor and Alton Bay. A Sunday Champagne Brunch Cruise is a great way to enjoy a relaxed day with friends and family.

The Mount is 230 feet with indoor and outdoor seating. There is a gift shop and meals are served onboard. Weddings and parties on the Mount prove to be wonderful, memorable ways to celebrate.

the US Mail Boat Sophie C. The Sophie C is the oldest floating post office in the U.S. on an inland waterway. A unique, 65-foot replica of a turn-of-thecentury paddleboat can often be seen on the waters of Winnipesaukee during the summer and fall. The pretty Winnipesaukee Belle is owned by the Wolfeboro Inn and is available for private charters. Two decks offer a choice of cruising outdoors under a shaded canopy or indoors with window views of the lake and all that it offers.

The Belle has charters for company outings, weddings, birthday parties and other groups.

Also offered on the Belle are public cruises on MondayFriday at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. In the era of going as fast as possible to maximize the fun, what do you suppose the attraction could be for sailing a boat in which 10 knots is warp speed? “Blow boats”, “Rag Merchants”, and a host of even more desultory handles for sailboats, can’t really offer much of a challenge to a “real boater”, can they?

Consider this: operating a sailboat can be more complicated than flying an airplane. How can it be this complex? Easy: an airplane operates in one medium, the air. The propeller in front keeps it moving forward and lift generated by air moving over the top of the wings keep it up in the air.( The propeller blast also keeps the pilot cool. If you doubt the latter, watch the pilot sweat when the propeller stops.) Similarly, “lift” generated by wind flowing over a sail (more or less horizontally in this case) propels a sailboat forward. (It also keeps the “pilot” cool.) So far, the airplane and the sailboat seem pretty much alike. However (a really big “however”), a sailboat operates in a second medium, water, and this is what makes sailing more complicated than flying (or rocket science, for that matter). The sailboat “pilot” (let’s call him or her the “skipper”) uses the water to keep the boat from blowing sideways. This is accomplished by the keel or centerboard, acting much like the sail, or an airplane’s wing, generating lift in the water. Additionally, the sailboat skipper has to contend with waves moving the boat up and down which affect how much lift is generated by the hull’s appendages, and how much of the going up and down is spilling the wind out of the sails. The skipper has to balance these forces to get the most out of his sailboat. NO OTHER MOVING VEHICLE HAS TO OPERATE IN TWO FLUIDS SIMULTANEOUSLY -not airplanes, not locomotives, not automobiles, and yes, not even rocket ships. That is the challenge of sailing. If you think this could be more interesting than pushing the throttles to the stops on a speedboat, then sailing could very well be for you.

Sailing is too complex to get into a comprehensive “howto” in the space available here. A beginner should seek professional sailing instruction to learn the basics of sailboat

handling, but here are a couple of concepts everyone -- sail boat and power boat drivers -- ought to know about sailing.

A Sailboat Can not Head Directly Into the Wind: The best it can do under ideal conditions is to “point” approximately 45 degrees to the wind. Therefore, to get directly to windward (toward the direction from which the wind is blowing) a sailboat has to sail a zigzag course, first on one “tack” (zig), then on the other “tack” (zag).

The tacks are labeled according to which side of the boat is closest to the wind. If the wind is coming over the port side, the boat is said to be sailing on the “port tack” (zig). If the wind is coming over the starboard side, the boat is said to be on the “starboard tack” (zag).

These distinctions are important when two boats are sailing in close proximity to determine which has the right of way and which must give way to the other. The “Points” of Sailing~Different Speeds at Different Angles:

We have seen already how a sailboat cannot go directly into the wind, so what is the most efficient tacking angle to windward? This is explained in the diagram known as a polar plot of speed made good.

Tacking angles are shown in the diagram at b, a, and c. s represents the distance made good to windward for each angle. In the angle b, the boat is pointed closer to the wind but does not sail as fast. In the angle c, the boat sails fast but does not sail as close to the wind as b. The boat sailing at angle a represents the most efficient angle to the wind and therefore is the most efficient angle sailing to windward.

Similarly, the diagram shows what happens when sailing with the wind abeam d or slightly aft of abeam, which is the most efficient sailing angle. Note that sailing directly downwind, f, is slower than sailing slightly across the wind on a broad reach, e.

There will be different polar plots for different boats and different wind speeds. The challenge for the skipper is to find the most efficient angles under any given conditions. Yes, it IS rocket science.

serve the lake on a busy Saturday afternoon. The difference will be dramatic, waves going every which way in a jumble of confusion. I call this “power boat bobble.”

As we have discussed, a sailboat is most efficient when sailing in flat water. Power boat bobble upsets this efficiency by causing the sails to shake. When a sail shakes, it loses much of its driving power. This is frustrating to skipper and crew.

Here are a few things the sailor can do to minimize the affect of power boat bobble: When I sailed my 12 foot garvey (a boat with a blunt bow, not very good for sailing in waves) I had the luxury of picking my days to sail when there was less power boat bobble. In other words, I avoided sailing on weekends. Not everyone has this luxury, however.

Sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee presents another set of challenges. Because almost all of the lake must be shared with other boats, most of which are power driven craft, the sailor (and the power boat skipper) has to contend with wakes generated by power boats in varying degrees. The wake from a single power boat will quickly pass under another boat and be gone, but the wakes from hundreds of power boats cruising the lake are cumulative and affect the lake’s surface even after they are long gone. Wakes cross, mix together, bounce off the shoreline, until the lake is one mass of confused water. To see an example of this, look at the lake surface on a quiet weekday morning before the boats some out. It will either be glassy smooth or will have regularly shaped wind ripples which move in one direction -- easy to sail on. Then ob-

I also found places on Lake Winnipesaukee which were away from traffic. A good spot was off the launching ramp across the road (Route 109) from the Libby museum on Winter Harbor. I was rarely troubled by power boat traffic and regularly had good sailing breezes. Another good sailing area was Lake Wentworth, which I reached via Mast Landing (Route 28) on Crescent Lake. I had to row with the mast down through the canal between Crescent Lake and Lake Wentworth, but the mast was easily rigged once there, and I rarely was troubled by power boat bobble. I was often the only boat using the lake. I have also enjoyed short sails on Crescent Lake, which is pretty small and where there was rarely other boat traffic, although I once shared Crescent Lake with another sailboat.

The type of boat you sail will also affect how well you will make out on troubled waters. A long, narrow boat will sail better in power boat bobble than a short beamy boat.

However, most boats are designed to maximize interior volume, and as boat slips are generally charged by the foot of overall length, this discourages long, narrow sailboats. A narrow sailboat will have less “form stability” than a wide sailboat, which will tend to make it heel more in response to the wind. This can be overcome, to an extent, by placing crew weight to windward, but there are limits to how effective this can be to reduce heeling. A long narrow boat will likely be more challenging to sail, but this can add to the fun if you enjoy a challenge. Catamarans (twin hull sailboats) are great fun to sail and should handle power boat bobble well when sailing on a steady course, but they can be difficult to tack

in waves. Talk with your sailboat dealer about what sailboat comes closest to meeting your needs.

Try sailing. It is fun, but, if you are a novice, get proper instruction first, and don’t take family members with you until you gain confidence in handling the boat. As with skiing or any other technically demanding sport, sailing can seem overwhelmingly difficult and intimidating -- at first. But soon the mysteries will unfold to you. When that happens, I guarantee you will never look back. Sailing is a life-long joy for those of us who participate. I’m 81 and still sailing. I got my first sailboat when I was 13. I don’t think this is a record for Ripley’s “Believe it or Not.” There are lots of happy sailors like me. Come join the fun.

The BoatU.S. Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that helps boaters be safer and better stewards of the environment.

Stash the Trash 1. Reduce the amount of packaging and plastic taken aboard.

2. Put a sturdy trash container on the boat.

3. Keep all trash on board for disposal or recycling onshore.

4. Establish a boat rule that no trash gets thrown overboard – even cigarette butts.

5. Leave the water and marina cleaner than it was found – carefully pick up trash left by others.

The Scoop on Poop 6. Use onshore restrooms before leaving the shore.

7. Keep untreated sewage out of all waters.

8. Heads should be equipped with a USCG-approved Marine Sanitation Device: Type I, II or III. 9. Use enzyme deodorizers for holding tanks and portable toilets.

Stop the Drops 10. Know how much fuel the tanks hold and don’t top off!

11. Make sure anyone fueling the boat knows which deck fill is for fuel.

12. Use oil absorbent pads to catch drips while handing the fuel nozzle between the dock and the boat.

13. Fill up trailerboats’ gas tanks while the boat is on the trailer, not in the water.

Maintain the Boat 14. Regularly scrub the decks with fresh water and a brush to reduce the need to use heavy cleaners.

15. Try to do large cleaning and maintenance jobs while the boat is out of the water.

16. Ask the marina or underwater diver to recycle used zincs.

17. Use a hard (non-ablative) anti-fouling paint if the boat bottom will be scrubbed while in the water.

So Many Fish, So Little Time 18. Keep only those fish that will be eaten the day of the catch.

19. Practice catch-and-release techniques to ensure the survival of those fish tossed back.

20. Use circle hooks.

21. Wet hands or gloves before handling a fish to be released.
