The Rich Tradition of Historic Inns in New England

By Mark Okrant Historic inns have a rich tradition stretching back more than 2,000 years.

They evolved from simple roadside shelters into elegant destinations that reflect the changing ways people traveled. Earliest inns appeared in the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, Greece, and Rome. Travelers, merchants, government officials, and soldiers needed safe places to rest.

Along the Roman Empire’s extensive road network, roadside inns—known as mansiones and mutationes—provided lodging, food, fresh horses, and repairs for travelers. As most of us learned years ago, Joseph and Mary were told, “There’s no room at the inn.”

This would have been a frequent circumstance along more popular routes, as the inns during that time were frequently full. Some innkeepers offered an open lower level or stable to those who were desperate for shelter.

After the fall of Rome, monasteries often offered hospitality to pilgrims.

By the Middle Ages, privately owned inns became common throughout Europe. These establishments typically featured shared sleeping rooms, a communal dining hall, stables for horses, basic meals, and ale or wine to drink. Many medieval inns were located along pilgrimage routes, including those leading to Santiago de Compostela and Canterbury.

As stagecoach travel expanded during the 16th through 18th centuries, coaching inns became essential stops.

Wealthier travelers could rent private rooms, while others slept in shared accommodations.

In colonial America, inns and taverns served multiple purposes. Besides providing lodging, they often functioned as restaurants, post offices, courtrooms, town meeting places, and centers for political discussion. Several famous colonial inns hosted notable figures such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

Upon entering the 19th century, railroads changed travel dramatically.

Rather than seek out inns and taverns, travelers increasingly stayed near train stations or at luxurious grand hotels that offered architectural opulence, fine dining, and recreational activities.

Many small roadside inns declined during this period.

The rise of automobiles in the early 20th century changed the travel landscape considerably, as many country inns were given new life. Americans began taking leisure road trips, and historic inns became popular for their charm and personal service. After the 1920s, motels provided very strong competition. However, some inns were able to compete with motels by emphasizing historic architecture, fine dining, personalized hospitality, scenic locations, and by featuring local history.

As we are now fully into the 21st century, many historic inns still operate in buildings that are 100 to 300 years old. Guests who prefer historic inns are drawn to those properties that preserve original features such as hand-hewn beams, wide-plank floors, large fireplaces, antique furnishings, and original period architecture. All in all, many guests choose historic inns because they offer an “experience” rather than simply a place to sleep.

We live in a part of the country that is imbued with pre-colonial and colonial tradition. New England has one of the nation’s richest collections of historic inns, many dating to the 1700s and early 1800s. Some notable examples include: • The Publick House Historic Inn, opened in Sturbridge, MA, in 1771 • The Red Lion Inn, opened in Stockbridge, MA, in 1773 • The Norwich Inn, opened in Norwich, CT, in 1797 These inns continue to combine hospitality with local history, allowing guests to experience buildings and traditions that have welcomed travelers for generations.

Here in New Hampshire, we have dozens of historic inns, many operating in buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. What follows is a list of some of the state’s most notable historic inns that continue to welcome guests today: • The Inn at Hancock (in Hancock) was established in 1789. It is widely recognized as New Hampshire’s oldest continuously operating inn. After an extensive restoration, it recently reopened in 2026 with updated accommodations while preserving its historic character.

• New London Inn (in New London) was established in 1792. This village landmark has served travelers for more than two centuries and remains a popular destination near Mount Kearsarge.

This writer has had the good fortune of sharing a long friendship with the previous owners of Inn on Golden Pond (in Holderness). Built in 1879 as a private family home by the Sargent family, they began renting out extra bedrooms during the summer, once their children were grown. Originally called The Catalpas after three large trees in the front yard, the inn has retained much of its 19th-century character. My friends, who owned the inn from 1984 to 2020, took enormous pride in their role as stewards of a piece of the region’s history. One can easily surmise that previous and current owners of each of the historic inns share a similar level of responsibility to provide a high level of hospitality while maintaining the character of the properties themselves.

The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Exploring the Moral Challenges of AI Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing how we work, learn, communicate, and make decisions—but with these advances come important ethical questions. Join the Meredith Public Library (91 Main Street) on Thursday, September 10 at 6:30 pm for The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, presented by philosophy professor Kiki Berk.

This timely program explores some of the most urgent moral challenges that Artificial Intelligence presents to society today. Topics will include au-

tomation and job displacement, deepfakes and misinformation, the role of AI in education, implicit bias, autonomous systems such as self-driving cars and drones, and the ethical implications of a potential technological singularity.

Following a brief introduction to applied ethics and the technology behind generative AI, Berk will examine each of these issues, highlighting the core moral questions they raise and their significance for developing thoughtful policies and regulations. The program

will conclude with an open discussion, giving attendees an opportunity to share their perspectives and ask questions.

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of the ethical landscape surrounding AI and practical tools for thinking critically about how this rapidly evolving technology may affect individuals and society in the years ahead.

Kiki Berk is a Professor of Philosophy at Southern New Hampshire

University. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from VU University Amsterdam in 2010. Her current research interests include the Philosophy of Death and the Philosophy of Meaning in Life.

Franklin, General Marquis de Lafayette, Lady Frances Wentworth and Abigail Adams, will rotate from table to table, serving delicious pastries and tea while engaging with guests and sharing stories from the Revolutionary era.

A Very Special Collector’s Club

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The Wolfeboro Stamp Club was originally formed around 1939, but it eventually dissolved, perhaps because of the stresses of World War II or a lack of interest.

The Wolfeboro Stamp Club was revived in 1990 and is going strong today. Club president Warren Gould says, “We are a small group, but we do a lot.”

With a membership of about 17 stamp enthusiasts and collectors, each focusing on a different type of stamp, the club meets the first Thursday of every month from 6 to 8 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 258 South Main Street in Wolfeboro.

Postal service and stamps began in the early 17th century in the American colonies, eventually leading to the United States Postal Service. The government organization offers services across the United States and its territories. According to www.wikipedia.org, “Before the introduction of stamps, it was the recipient of mail—not the sender— who generally paid the cost of postage, giving the fee directly to the postman on delivery. The task of collecting money for letter after letter greatly slowed the postman on his route. Postage stamps revolutionized this process, leading to universal prepayment.”

Today, the availability of stamps with many designs and subjects makes stamp collecting a fun endeavor.

“Everyone in the Wolfeboro Stamp Club is interested in all sorts of stamps, and each member collects things that interest them. I am interested in antique cars, for example, so I look for stamps with old cars,” explains Warren.

There are many stamps targeting a wide variety of interests, such as quilts, outer space, the Olympics, and so much more. Finding stamps in a favorite category to add to a collection is truly “the thrill of the hunt,” as Warren puts it.

What does a typical club meeting look like? Warren says meetings are informal. First, there is an update on anything happening in the world of stamp collecting, such as a special meeting or event, information sharing, or anything else of interest. Then the meeting opens to members reviewing special stamp books sent by the American Philatelic Society (APS).

The APS books are full of stamps that collectors may wish to purchase.

Browsing the stamp books is rather like going on a shopping spree, and collectors often find something they want, whether a stamp they have been searching for or something new to add to their specific collection.

“The APS has a very good supply, and we can usually find what we want in their stamp books,” says Warren. The process of obtaining a stamp through APS is simple: books of stamps are sent to the club, and during a meeting, members look through them. If they see one they want for their collection, they can go through the process to purchase it.

Using the APS catalogs gives Wolfeboro Stamp Club members access to a wide variety of stamps that might otherwise be difficult to find. (By contrast, finding stamps at estate or yard sales often doesn’t yield good results, because few people hold on to or collect them.)

Stamp collecting is not a widespread hobby, so the number of collectors is limited. As a result, the language of stamp collecting is also unique, and members mention terms that most people are not familiar with.

Warren says people collect for several reasons and cites himself as an example. He began collecting stamps at age 8 but stopped in his teens. He took it up again around 2006 and is now an avid stamp collector. He enjoys the monthly club meetings and presenting special events, such as the twice-a-year open houses that allow the public to stop by, talk with Wolfeboro Stamp Club members, and learn more about stamp collecting. In that way, people who are curious, or who already collect stamps alone, may enjoy joining the club for camaraderie and information on various stamps.

For those who know little about stamps but want to learn more, the Wolfeboro Stamp Club members offer a great resource at an open house.

There, they can talk about and sometimes display various stamps, showing visitors the joys of this unique hobby.

Visitors can see displays, ask questions, and purchase stamps.

“Our next open house event is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 12 from

noon to 2:30 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 258 South Main Street in Wolfeboro. We hold an open house in the spring season as well,” Warren says.

Stamp collecting is a hobby anyone can do, no matter the season or a person’s ability to travel. Indeed, a stamp collector can get involved from the comfort of their own home or at a club meeting. During COVID, stamp collecting was very popular, with online auctions offering a wide variety of stamps, Warren mentions.

The stamps that Wolfeboro Stamp Club members are interested in are as varied as the members. For example, someone might be interested in stamps from Germany circa 1940, while someone else might focus on royalty, such as Queen Elizabeth stamps. The rarest and most valuable stamp in the world today is the British Guiana 1 cent Magenta, printed in 1856 as an emergency local issue in Georgetown due to a supply shortage from Britain; just a single copy is known to exist today. Although finding such a stamp is highly unlikely, it is the thrill of the hunt that spurs some stamp collectors onward.

There is also something satisfying and enjoyable about collecting a stamp series featuring something of special interest to a hobbyist. Since thousands of stamps are made, collectors will likely find a category that interests them. Says Warren, “The number of stamps made is mind-boggling.”

Some of the stamp subject matter includes Winter Wreath Stamps, Barbie Stamps, Declaration of Independence Stamps, American Icon Stamps, American Bison Stamps, Mister Rogers Stamps, among many, many more.

Granite Granite State State Scene Scene & & Heard Heard Reflections on Golden Pond: Revisiting a New England Classic 45 Years Later

By Joel Bocko How curious to consider a quiet, intimate film like On Golden Pond as an 80s blockbuster, and yet in box office terms it certainly was. Mark Rydell’s adaptation of Ernest Thompson’s play, set on a fictitious New England waterway, shot on Holderness’ own Squam Lake, and starring Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda, grossed over $119 million in 1981.

That’s $438 million in today’s dollars, or $10 million more than The Super Mario Galaxy Movie made earlier this year. On Golden Pond was the #2 hit of the year, behind only Raiders of the Lost Ark. This was my first-ever viewing, following years of familiarity with its reputation. With that personal take in

mind, talking about how much money the movie made can seem like an odd place to start! And yet this very popularity - On Golden Pond’s ability to tap into the zeitgeist of 1981 - is one of the aspects that fascinates me most.

My biggest surprise may have been Norman Thayer, Jr. (the elder Fonda in his final performance). I was expecting a cranky old man, and that’s what I got, but I also presumed Fonda would have a bit more of a twinkle in his eye, that his grouchiness would be charming and at least half an act. This is admittedly how his wife Ethel (Hepburn) takes it, teasing him for his bluster and making excuses to everyone who crosses his path, but from the first moment he steps into the cabin, the nearly eighty-year-old retired professor’s atti-

tude has far more bite than the film’s sentimental reputation would suggest.

There are few other characters in the ensemble, so we take our cues from them in addition to our own instincts (mine initially led me to chuckles which withered and turned to winces the longer Norman scowled at his surroundings and attacked his interlocutors). If Ethel encourages us to shrug off Norman’s rancor as mere affect, local mailman Charlie Martin (William Lanteau) seems more trepidatious, smiling and offering friendly greetings but betraying unease with Norman’s brittle insults through his own occasional glances and general nervous energy.

By the time the Thayers’ daughter Chelsea (the younger Fonda) arrives with her boyfriend (Dabney Coleman) and his teenage son (Doug McKeon), both named Bill Ray Wayne and soon to be her husband and stepson respectively, Ethel is outnumbered and Norman’s ornery nature has found a less sympathetic audience. Yet this is also when we may begin to feel we’re peeking under the rusty hood and gaining a bit of admiration for the still (mostly) solid motor of Norman’s mind. Certainly I found myself laughing once again at the old man’s putdowns, this time fully aware - and accepting - that his hostility was genuine.

Particularly well-written and well-

played is the dialogue between the slyly obstinate Norman and the superficially polite but at times obnoxiously forward Mr. Wayne, who makes a bigger deal than necessary of asking permission (while essentially asserting his prerogative) for fortysomething fornication under their roof. Neither character ever quite fully captures our identification. In one moment we may appreciate Norman’s brittle refusal to submit to Bill Ray’s awkwardly formal patter; at another, we’re inclined to applaud Bill Ray’s articulation of Norman’s passive-aggressive mind games, which everyone else seems to wither beneath.

Although his brief presence opens us up to potential new understandings of Norman and his relationships to those around him, Coleman’s character is largely absent after this one confrontation. (He does have one notable moment soon after, however, in which he scolds the younger Billy Ray in a manner making it clear that the seemingly smug middle-aged dad had been wounded by Norman, and is now deflecting his patriarchal humiliation onto his own son.) After a short visit, Chelsea and Bill Ray leave for Europe, essentially abandoning their own child to the elder Thayers. The environment shifts from different assortments of characters interacting inside the cabin to a fairly consistent duo engaged in activity on the open pond. They fish and talk and only occasionally fight before begrudgingly apologizing. Bit by bit, they accommodate the other’s flaws while working on their own. I’d be curious to read or watch the play and discover how these scenes are conveyed onstage. The early parts of the film seem very theatrical in dialogue and pacing, while it’s harder to imagine these nature-dependent, often less verbal later sequences playing out the same way indoors. While Norman’s relationship to Billy Ray forms the dramatic meat of the movie, the climax is achieved when Chelsea returns - now a married woman - and has a minor breakdown over the emotional toll from her father’s cold indifference and casual insults. Jane Fonda has often spoken of the parallels between these characters and her own difficulties with Henry, and this part of the film crackles with the frisson created by reality’s overlap with fiction.

This was not only a matter of personal biography but cultural mythology, given the two movie stars’ public images in the decades leading up to this point.

Arguably, On Golden Pond creaks and cracks under this pressure, relying more on what we - and the actors - bring to the material than what the material itself offers. With Chelsea offscreen most of the time, her emotional seesaws could use more context, as could the decision she ultimately makes in attempting to finally reconcile with a parent who may not be around much

longer. If much of the film’s strength lies in its ambiguity, in our uncertainty about how we’re “supposed” to feel toward these characters and their actions, in this case it casts a shadow over the ending that doesn’t feel fully intended or worked through.

There’s a sensation that the movie is attempting to reach a cathartic release, a happy ending of sorts, which chafes against the impression that Chelsea is actually crumbling into the little girl desperate for Daddy’s love rather than growing into the woman who can accept her own worth without depending on his permission to do so. In what sense is this a defeat rather than a victory - or is it a necessary compromise?

That messiness could work in theory, but it doesn’t quite click here, even if there is a richness to the resonance and uncertainty; Chelsea dialing back her

More consistently effective is the final scene between Norman and Esther, in which he physically collapses under the strain of departure and confesses a frailty he’s been trying to deny.

This builds on several scenes suggesting that Norman is heading into some form of senility, perhaps all the way to Alzheimer’s (as author Thompson has framed Norman’s condition in later years, even playing this angle himself in an onstage revival in his seventies).

Wisely, On Golden Pond ends there.

come while pausing on this precipice is perhaps a more powerful final note.

The film’s soft photography, its emphasis on the gentle, rippling reflections on Squam Lake, which amplify its themes of fleeting mortality, make it a poignant tribute to the dying of a light that still - for the moment - holds.

Even those who’ve already seen it can be surprised by the reminder that the story unfolds in summer given its autumnal feel. Looking back over forty-five years, the passage of time on either end lends On Golden Pond even more weight without crushing the original experience; consider that the Thayers’ entire existence as a family lasted about as long as it’s been since the movie came out.

With over two decades left in her own life, Hepburn flits about the film’s periphery energetically (at times perhaps a bit too energetically, as parodies of her “Look at the looooons” delivery can attest) before forcefully landing that final scene. McKeon provides some much-needed childish perspective, Coleman ties a nice bow around the film’s middle with his showdown,

and the film itself ties a nice bow on the middle of Jane Fonda’s long career, a passage between her fiery youth and, well, still rather fiery old age. Henry Fonda, meanwhile, synthesizes his comforting image and darker shadow in a manner vaguely reminiscent of what may be his masterpiece, Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), although this time he tilts more to sullen withdrawal than cautious engagement with the world.

He is undoubtedly the film’s core.

Watching On Golden Pond today calls forth a series of double visions.

We can see the hidden little indie we’d imagine such a film would be today as well as the titanic pop culture phenomenon this actually was in its own day (even making the cover of Time Magazine that fall). We can see the crisp black and white images of an iconic Depression-era Fonda, or the other Fonda making waves from Paris to Hanoi thirty years later, alongside the ordinary Americans they play-act (and thoroughly embody) on a New England summer day. And we can see the story’s past and the film’s future while remaining surprised by what its eternal present holds for us. The golden pond and troubled waters are one and the same - always have been.

Yester year Farming Forever: Remembering the Farms That Shaped the Lakes Region buying land in Lake Winnipesaukee’s Center Harbor. Over time, he owned about 1,000 acres with farmsteads and, in some cases, acquired land swiftly as opportunity presented itself.

Dane and his wife lived at least part of the year on one of the farmsteads, known as Hillcrest. As his holdings grew, Dane came to own 5,000 acres and ran Longwood for Guernsey cattle, the Davis Farm for Belgian workhorses, and had pastureland for Devon cattle.

Although Moultonborough is now largely tourist-driven, with lakefront cottages and homes, it was a remote area years ago. Resident Frances A. Stevens wrote about those days in her book As I Remember Moultonborough New Hampshire. Frances’s parents bought the former Kennedy Place, which was once a farm with a goodsized barn; the outline of the foundation can still be seen between the house and the brook.

Mixed husbandry was the norm on many farms in the area until the mid1800s, as written in The Gunstock Parish: A History of Gilford, New Hampshire by Adair D. Mulligan. This term refers to a farm that grows crops and raises livestock. On larger farms, tasks were divided into woods work, barn work, and field work. The chores

were never-ending, with men and boys working the fields and tending the animals while women and girls handled baking, sewing, child care, weaving, and many other household tasks.

If the farmer was financially able to do so, according to Mulligan, he would acquire more land over time. In turn, outdoor tasks that required work were usually located near the barn, which was a smart farming practice.

Before the Civil War, it was not uncommon for a farming family to practice mixed husbandry. As a result, the family lived independently of outside goods. They could grow their own food, obtain meat, and live on what their farm provided.

Because some farms were remote or lacked the money to hire much help, the women in the family pitched in when needed. They helped with haying and other garden and barn chores.

Men might step indoors in the winter to mend shoes and fix indoor things, such as shoring up a fireplace.

Farms in the Lakes Region ran by the seasons, with the summer months focused on hay. This crop was vital because it fed livestock. Without enough hay, the animals would go without food, and the farm could fail. Other seasons meant harvesting in the fall, maple syruping in the spring, and maintaining the farm through the winter.

Haying was arduous before tractors, mowing machines, and other time-saving tools. In the 1800s, it was done by hand, and everyone was expected to

help at harvest time.

An example of the hard work for a farmer and his wife was husking flint corn, as explained in The Gunstock Parish: A History of Gilford, New Hampshire by Adair D. Mulligan. Flint corn was very different from the corn we purchase at the grocery store today.

Flint corn had about eight rows of kernels, which were removed with a husking tool. Once removed, the kernels were ground, and the corn flour was used to make johnnycakes or bread.

One successful Squam area business was Burleigh Farm, located in Holderness and managed by Frank and Helen Webster. The farm was a going concern, with around 2,000 Rhode Island Reds and three poultry houses. It also had a creamery and bottling plant. Vegetables, bottled milk, eggs, and more were delivered throughout the area by Burleigh Farm trucks.

Cows grazed in the fields, and the farm became known for dairy production until the 1960s.

Farming was a big part of life at Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury.

Although different from others in the area due to their religious beliefs, the men—and often the women—at Shaker Village were skilled farmers.

In the 1780s, a farmer and his family gave the land that would become Canterbury Shaker Village. Benjamin Whitcher owned the 100-acre Whitcher Farm and donated it to the Shakers • Yesteryear continued on page 17

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper You see old farms everywhere around New England. Working farms once peppered the landscape of the Lakes Region, among other places.

While most are gone today, some barns and homes remain as traces of the rural past.

Farms were the lifeblood of most Lakes Region families. Some farmers raised vegetables, and others ran dairy farms. Animals—mostly cows, but also sheep—were common.

Why did the old-time farms fade out?

There were many reasons. Younger family members moved away for opportunities elsewhere; fires destroyed homes and barns; and the Civil War called men to serve. In some cases, these men never returned, and the widows were forced to sell or starve.

The Squam region had many farms, some quite large. Over time, wealthy summer families bought farm property and turned it into seasonal homes or estates. Occasionally, a well-off family fell in love with farming and hired a foreman, restored the land, or ran the farm themselves.

One such man was Ernest B. Dane, Complete Pet Care who owned land in Center Harbor, according to Squam by Rachel Carley.

The Shakers made good use of the land and farmed the property, producing vegetables, apples, maple syrup, meat, dairy items, and more. At www. shakers.org, history states of the Canterbury Shakers, “In 1795, they sectioned out a portion of the hill overlooking their mill pond as a vegetable garden to feed their growing village.”

The farming portion of Canterbury Shaker Village was born of necessity from the beginning. It became a massive agricultural center in the 19th century, with thousands of acres farmed at its height, major seed production, livestock, and herbal medicine. These products were necessary to feed the growing membership of Shakers.

The famed barn at Shaker Village, now gone, was huge and a marvel of construction. Known for dairy production, the Shakers built a massive barn said to be the largest in New Hampshire. It was destroyed by fire in the 1970s, but the huge foundation remains and attests to the structure’s size.

In another part of the Lakes Region, a father-and-son team of country doctors were also farmers. Their story combined medicine and farming. For Dr. Edwin Remick (1866–1935) and his son, Dr. Edwin C. Remick (1903–

1993), serving Tamworth meant tending to the sick, making house calls, and offering office hours and medicines they made themselves.

Their property was a farm, and they used it well, with Dr. Edwin C. carrying on after his father passed away in the 1930s. He ran a successful dairy business and offered his medical services. One reason he kept cows was to provide milk for the Civilian Conservation Corps working in the area.

Dr. Edwin C. had a pasteurization machine and a milk delivery service.

Four or five laborers also lived on the property to work on the farm.

Doctor Edwin C. embraced horse racing and dairy farming. According to information at www.remickmuseum. org, “Holsteins and horses were beloved by Dr. Remick, and to this day, the farm, now a museum, continues the farming effort.”

With most of the large farms in the Lakes Region now gone, traces of the area’s agricultural past remain. Old barns and foundations, fields where corn and hay were grown, and farmhouses where families once lived show how important farming was.

Today, the old barns and homes serve different uses, but they still attest to a way of life that was the lifeblood of the area’s communities.

Ossipee Historical Society Lecture by Local Author Dave Snyder On Tuesday, September 15, at 4 pm, the Ossipee Historical Society is pleased to present a lecture about Cowboy Nute, a new book by the poet Dave Snyder. Cowboy Nute chronicles the colorful and adventurous life of Ossipee resident J. Lester Nute, a bootlegger and musician who lived underneath a sawdust pile. The lecture will take place at the Ossipee Town Hall, 55 Main Street in Center Ossipee.

Gafney Library to Host the Southern Portsmouth Naval Shipyard: From Sails New Hampshire Ukulele Group to Atoms – Lecture by Joseph Gluckert Have you ever wanted to learn to play a new instrument? How about the ukulele? Join the Southern New Hampshire Ukulele Group, who will be hosting a beginner ukulele workshop on Tuesday, September 15, at 5:30 pm, which will be held in the Community Room at the Gafney Library (14 High Street, Sanbornville).

Whether you’re just starting out or have some prior experience, this workshop guarantees a fun and engaging experience for everyone. Ukuleles will be provided for participants. SNHUG’s primary purpose is to provide a forum for area “ukesters” of all levels to share and play songs, learn techniques, and form friendships while learning more about everyone’s favorite instrument.

The secondary function is one of community service. They currently support The Ukulele Kid’s Club, which is a 501(c)(3) charity, providing

instruments and music therapy to children nationwide. Also, on an allvolunteer, non-profit basis, the group may be available for area fundraisers and community events.

They currently meet every other Friday night in Brentwood. SNHUG has many events that members can participate in. These include socials, jams, open mics, live group performances, charity events, instructional classes, and much, much more.
