Lakes Region Holiday Fairs and Events

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The holidays will soon be upon us and there are fairs, parades and other events in the Lakes Region you will not want to miss. Mark your calendars now for all the fun coming up in the weeks ahead.

A charming way to kick off the holiday season in the Lakes Region is the annual Tuftonboro Holiday Festival.

This year’s festival takes place November 14 and 15 with locations all over the Tuftonboro area. Visitors to the unique event drive (via maps/signs) from the home/studio of one crafter or artisan to another. Doors are open in welcome and festival attendees can purchase handmade items in each home on the tour and also sample baked goods and beverages. The holiday season means carols and glittery cards and cookies and of course, jolly old St. Nick! The red-suited fellow will be making appearances all around the Lakes Region in the upcoming weeks.

The little town of Bristol in the Newfound Lake area is a favorite place for Santa, and he makes his annual visit each Christmas season. This is the 61st annual Santa’s Village at the Tapply Thompson Community Center in downtown Bristol, and Santa will be on hand to greet kids from December 11-13 (hours are Dec. 11: 6-8 pm;

Geez Louise - Tuftonboro Holiday Festival Dec. 12 and 13: 2-5 pm). The Community Center will be transformed into a

holiday wonderland with Santa’s elves building toys and wrapping gifts, Mrs.

Claus handing out her delicious homemade cookies, the North Pole Train Station and lots more for young ones to explore. The event is free, and visitors are asked to bring a canned food item to donate to the local food pantry.

While you and your family wait to see Santa, you may browse/shop the craft tables in the Center and do some extra holiday shopping. Call 744-2713 for details.

Also in downtown Bristol, there will be traditional Christmas caroling in the Square (center of town) on November 27 from 5 to 6 pm. Get into the holiday spirit with singing carols and warm up with hot cocoa or cider and some oldfashioned roasted chestnuts or popcorn. All are welcome. Santa arrives on a fire engine to light the Christmas tree in downtown Bristol after the caroling.

Children can visit with Santa at the Tapply Thompson Community Center at 6:15 pm on Nov. 27.

On December 12, the Bristol United Church of Christ Women’s Fellowship will hold a Christmas Bazaar at the church in the downtown area from 9 am to 1 pm.

The Tapply Thompson Community Center also will offer a One Stop Christmas Shop For Kids on Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 4 to 6 pm and also on Friday, Nov. 27 from 4 to 7 pm. The event will allow youngsters to shop for family and teacher gifts at reasonable pric-

Santa and his elves bring their 40th annual Christmas Village to the Laconia Community Center at 308 Union Avenue in Laconia to offer kids a great way to spend a magical afternoon or evening. The Village will run from December 3 to 6 (hours are December 3 and 4 from 6-8 pm and December 5 and 6 from 2-5 pm; on December 5 the Village will be open from 10 am to noon for Seniors; on December 6 there will be special hours of 10 am to noon for handicapped/special needs visitors).

Children can sample refreshments, have cookies and a drink and lots more.

And of course, Santa will be there to hear wish lists. The event is free; donations are welcome. Call 524-4081.

The Franklin Opera House in downtown Franklin gets festive with the annual Festival of Trees offering a glittering show of decorated holiday trees on December 4 to 6. Call 934-1901 for details.

Plymouth will be bustling with activity during the holidays. The Hometown Holiday Celebration encompasses the weekend of December 4-6 with events each day.

The fun-filled weekend kicks off with Plymouth State University’s Operating Staff Festival of Trees, offering a display of beautifully decorated trees for viewing at the Senior Center.

The centerpiece of the Celebration is the holiday parade that begins at 5 pm on December 5. Folks come early to meet their neighbors, enjoy a Christmas music sing-a-long, look at the lights, and decorate cookies with the Plymouth State University elves on the Common, do some holiday shopping and enjoy a free hot chocolate at Main Street banks. The parade always bustles with brightly lit floats, high school

Page 5 bands, a color guard, business entries, decorated walking groups, decked out animals, dance troupes and, of course, Santa!

After the downtown Plymouth parade, Santa will visit with the kids at the local Senior Center. Alex Ray and the Rotarians will be hosting a “Chillbuster” Barbeque. Warm yourself at the bonfire on Green Street across from the Senior Center. Fireworks end the day.

On Dec. 6, everyone can skate for free with Santa at the Plymouth State University ice arena from 1 to 3 pm.

Santa will be on the ice for visiting and for free photographs. Come with or without skates. (Free skates are available.) A new event this year is a performance by 9th State Dance Troupe between skating sessions. Call the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce at 536-1001.

Light Up Night in downtown Alton will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 5 to 6:30 pm. Join the community to celebrate the festive holiday lighting. Activities include a visit with Santa, caroling, tree lighting, children’s crafts, cookies, cocoa and more. All ages are invited to attend this community event. Santa just loves to make a dramatic entrance. On Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3:30 pm Santa rides into Waterville Valley by sled dogs! Santa will be at the Nordic Center from 3:30 to 7 pm to meet with the children and then be on hand for the tree lighting. Fireworks light up the sky and end the festivities. Hot cocoa and cookies will be offered for sale and a raffle will be held. All proceeds will be donated to the Whole Village Family Resource Center. Call 2368175 for further information.

Christmas on the farm is a New England tradition and no place is more beautiful than the NH Farm Museum in Milton. On November 21 an Old Fashioned Thanksgiving takes place at the farm from 10 am to 3 pm. New Hampshire has a special connection to Thanksgiving; Sarah Josepha Hale, born on a farm in Newport, NH, after many years of letter writing, persuaded President Lincoln to declare the fourth Thursday in November a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1863, thereby establishing the National Holiday. Come to the Farm Museum on Saturday, Nov. 21 for a special living history visit with farmhouse tours, costumed role players, homemade pumpkin pie and hot cider in the farmhouse kitchen, horsedrawn wagon rides through the fields, visits with the farm animals and popcorn over the campfire.

On December 19, the Farm Museum offers A Victorian Christmas on the Farm, from 10 am to 3 pm. Tour the beautifully decorated historic Jones Farmhouse with costumed role players and experience the wonder of a Victorian Christmas. Enjoy a horsedrawn sleigh or wagon ride through the fields, depending on the weather.

Japanese Storyteller and Mime Motoko Comes to Tamworth The Arts Council of Tamworth presents Japanese storyteller and mime Motoko for five days of school and community workshops and to entertain with her storytelling in a performance on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 pm at Tamworth Congregational Church in Tamworth. Tickets are on sale online at artstamworth.org and at the door.

Motoko will offer two workshops for the public. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, attend a professional development workshop, Storytelling, Movement and Creativity, for teachers in all grades and other interested parties from 3:30 to 5 pm at the K. A. A native of Osaka, Japan, Motoko

first came to the United States as an exchange student at the University of Massachusetts. She trained with late master mime Tony Montanaro (1927-2002). Her partner, Eshu Bumpus, introduced her to the world of American storytelling.

Motoko has performed professionally since 1993, going to hundreds of schools, libraries, museums and festivals. Motoko has appeared on Mr. Rogers’Neighborhood and an educational video by Harcourt, and has been awarded numerous grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and New York State BOCES. Her debut CD, The Promise of Chrysanthemums, won a Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award and a Storytelling World Award.

What’s behind the gate that says, “This conservation land is owned and managed by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (SPNHF): Foot Travel Welcome, No Motorized Wheeled Vehicles”?

I turn in the lane, noting a neutral colored station wagon parked near the gate. Ahh, so I’m not the only one exploring on a drab fall afternoon. The wide path starts at a gradual incline.

Leaves crunch underfoot. A few drops from the day’s earlier rain sprinkle down as the wind moves through the leaves.

Soon a woman’s figure appears. She walks confidently, carrying loppers.

“Hello,” I say. “It looks like you’ve been here before. Do you take care of the trails?”

“I’ve been helping out,” she says. It turns out that Jill Paul spends a lot of time caring for these and other local trails. She has plenty of information to offer.

It’s about 4:30 on a gray fall afternoon, so Jill suggests I go straight to the top and save the new looping trails off the road for another day. At the top, she says, I will find a cabin. “You can go in, and there are great views from it.

You’ll have plenty of time. It’s about a half mile to the top.”

A cabin? That’s safe to go in? Great views? My imagination wanders as

I continue the walk, which is steeper now. I’ve lived not half a mile away for 29 years and until that sign appeared, I didn’t know anything existed beyond Beach Pond Road, houses and woods.

I pass a brown house off the trail on the left and keep going. Yellows, red, orange and brown. Fall foliage is just beyond peak. I squint. Did someone pour asphalt all the way up here? No. I soon see it’s a long stretch of open ledge, scraped clean in the last Ice Age. Just a few steps farther and off to the right I see the cabin at the end of the trail. It looks inviting. A stovepipe tops the roof and weather-beaten shutters stand at the window. I barely glance at the views as I circle to the right to reach the door.

I feel a little like I’m trespassing as I reach for the door latch. “Jill told me I could go in,” goes through my head.

The door opens with gentle pressure, and I’m greeted by an old wooden rocker, a writing desk piled with what look like journals, and shelves stocked with mugs, utensils and tubs neatly marked, “Tea,” and “Paper towels, etc.”

The walls are decorated with posters, a digital photo marked “2006,” and in front of me are sturdy wooden bunks.

Around the corner is another room, furnished with a woodstove, a couple of chairs and one wall fully glass. It overlooks a colorful mountain while Moody Mountain Farm nestles below.

Moody Mountain Farm has been in the same family for eight generations.

A 320-acre parcel was awarded Revolutionary War soldier Abner Moody for his service, and his family has cultivated, cared for, preserved and added to their land ever since. While Moody Mountain Forest was not part of the original family tract, it was Abner’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Ceci-

November at the Science Center The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness has much to offer for families in November. On Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10 to 11:30 am, the Center will hold an indoor/outdoor program for families with children ages 5 and up. The Eastern Coyote is a relative newcomer to New Hampshire and the Center will delve into some of the mysteries about the animal.

Participants will learn about coyotes through activities, a story, and a visit with a two-year old coyote. There are many questions about coyotes like, “are wily coyotes really that clever?” or “why do they howl and where do they live?” An adult must accompany each child (at no additional cost).

The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center also offers a series of programs specifically designed for homeschool students. The Be a Scientist series is for ages 7 to 10 and looks at a different type of scientist each month on a Thursday.

Participants will become a scientist as they develop and test predictions and participate in and conduct experiments.

Attendees will learn how to use keys and books to identify living and nonliving ecosystem components that make New Hampshire so unique.

November will focus on Biology. All homeschool programs align with the New Hampshire Science Framework.

cost.

The Using Our Five Senses programs are for ages 4 to 6 and are part of the homeschool series and take place on Thursdays; the November program will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5 from 10 to 11:30 am. Learn how animals use their senses; November will focus on touch. All homeschool programs align with the New Hampshire Science Framework.

Don’t rush the seasons, enjoy them at Prescott Farm

Cecily has long had a vision for conservation in this area where Ossipee, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro meet. The new 250-acre Moody Mountain Forest abuts 462 acres she gave to the Society in 1994. Through the efforts of Cecily and her neighbors, this new parcel brings the total conservation area on Moody Mountain to 890 acres.

According to the SPNHF website, Cecily bought the Moody Mountain Forest land in 1972 with the express purpose of preserving it. From the guestbook journals, I found—and signed—on the cabin desk, I learned the cabin has been a destination for those wanting a short hike since at least June 26, 1988, when Moody descendants Perrin and Judy Long signed in.

A glance through all three guest books show names of many locals: Greg Seymour visited in 1989; Sally Perkins, Jonathan Walpole and Gabe

dropped by as a dry run before a Libby Museum hike; Ellen Drew stopped by one August day when she was checking pasture and was able to see her farm from the ledge. A Preservation Society worker reported seeing a 300-pound black bear.

But the guest books reveal the names and stories of many people from other states and overseas, too. How did they all know about this gem when I had no clue?

Glancing inside and outside the cabin, I’m astonished at how neat and clean it is. There are no plaques proclaiming house rules, nor “take care of this or else…” proclamations. Instead, from time to time in the guest book there’s a gentle call to carry in/carry out and gratitude to those who do so.

From May 1997, “Cecily and Cricket tidy up—remove cigarette butts + beer cans. We wish persons who come to this beautiful spot would respect it and help keep it tidy. Thanks to those of you who do.”

The sun is dropping in the sky. I head back down the trail. I’ll return. Twentynine years was far too long.

The farm’s “Quiescence” program will take place November 7 from 10 to 11:30 am for adults and from 1 to 2:30 pm for families (children and adults welcome). This program will be offered to homeschoolers ages 8-12 on November 14 from 1 to 2:30 pm.

in northern New England, yet balmy days are not unheard of. Throughout the northeast, most deciduous trees have lost their leaves and many animals have disappeared from sight.

Reptiles and amphibians that didn’t enter hibernation last month do so in November. Insect sightings become more and more scarce. The last of the migrant birds are leaving. Mammals that don’t remain active through the winter have entered hibernation or dormancy. The natural world is bracing for winter. All this will be explored and discussed on November 7 and 14!

Prescott Farm is a non-profit organization that offers environmental education for all ages throughout the year, including WildQuest camps, public programs, field trips, long-term partnerships with local elementary schools and NOW Fledglings NatureBased Preschool. The 160-acre historic family farm features woodland and field trails, a “green” building with geothermal and solar energy systems, historic barns, an old-fashioned maple sugaring operation (during the month of March), heritage gardens and a forested pond. Prescott Farm is open year round, seven days a week from 9 am to 4 pm. It is free to hike or to explore the “green” building.

How to Pull Off a Great Thanksgiving Dinner

By Sarah Wright Thanksgiving marks the unofficial start of holiday eating, which continues until New Year’s when we all resolve to lose weight. Thanksgiving dinner is an important meal, shared with friends and family, gathered together to give thanks for what’s meaningful to them.

Whether you’re cooking for a few people, or for a large group, Thanksgiving dinner can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. So, strap on that apron and read on for tips that will have your guests saying, “My compliments to the chef.”

Let’s start with the main course—the turkey. I think it’s the most intimidating part of the meal, with the main worry is that it’ll be too dry. I’ve always preferred a fresh bird, but frozen is fine, too. (Just make sure to plan ahead so the turkey has time to thaw for three to four days in the fridge.) To cook the bird, position an oven rack in the lowest position, and preheat to 350 degrees. Remember to remove the neck and giblets from the turkey, which are usually in a small bag inside it.

Lately it seems that more people are choosing to cook stuffing separately, rather than inside the bird, but whether or not you do that, be sure to pat the turkey dry with paper towels before rubbing it inside and out with salt and pepper. Instead of stuffing, you can place onion, carrot, celery, sage, and thyme sprigs in the bird for flavor. Place the turkey on a rack in a large roasting pan, tying the legs together with twine and tucking the wings under. Brush melted butter all over the bird for moistness, adding a little paprika, sage, and thyme if desired. Tent with foil and roast for two hours if it’s a 10- to 12- pound bird, adding an extra 15 minutes per pound for larger birds. Uncover, brush with more butter, and increase the heat to 425 degrees. Roast until the thigh

meat registers at 165 degrees, about one more hour.

If you’re cooking a stuffed turkey, expect a longer roasting time until a thermometer placed into the stuffing registers 165 degrees. For safety reasons, do not stuff the bird ahead of time, but just before placing it into the oven. Try experimenting with the stuffing mix this year. Adding a little sausage and chopped apples is a great way to impress your guests. When the turkey is done, let it rest for 30 minutes before carving. If you’re making your own gravy, reserve the turkey drippings.

For some simple gravy, pour the turkey drippings and loosened browned bits from the roasting pan into a measuring cup. Skim the fat off the top, reserving two tablespoons. Add enough broth to the drippings to measure three cups. In a large saucepan, whisk a half cup of flour, 3/4 cup of broth and the reserved fat until smooth. Add some thyme, sage, and pepper; gradually whisk in the drippings mixture. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and cook for two to three minutes or until thickened.

mashed potatoes! So, here’s a quick way to make them. Put two pounds of peeled and chopped russet potatoes in a large saucepan and cover them with cold water. Season with salt and bring to a boil. Then reduce the heat to medium and simmer until very tender. It should take 15 minutes or so. Drain them and return them to the pan over low heat, adding a warm cup of milk,

a stick of room-temperature butter and half a teaspoon of salt. Mash until smooth.

If you prefer your potatoes a little sweeter, change up the recipe so that it’s a pound of russet potatoes and a pound of sweet potatoes in the saucepan. Add the salt and stick of butter as above, but just a half cup of warm milk. Mash it up and then stir in two teaspoons of brown sugar and a third of a cup of pecans.

One of the easiest things to make for Thanksgiving is the cranberry sauce.

Stop buying the canned stuff, and get a bag of fresh cranberries. On the back of the bag are easy instructions. Combine a cup of water and a cup of sugar in a saucepan, and bring to a boil. Add the cranberries and boil gently for another ten minutes, stirring occasionally. The fun part is watching them all pop open!

This classic recipe can be found printed on cans of French’s fried onions, and it’s made with just a few ingredients including cream of mushroom soup, pepper, cooked green beans and milk. Of course, the best part is the crunchy fried onions on top! If you’d like to save some calories this year, or try something new, boil some fresh green beans until they’re crisp-tender and then mix them in a hot skillet with some olive oil, bread crumbs, sliced garlic, rosemary, salt, pepper and a little lemon zest. Sounds delicious!

Another great vegetable classic are glazed carrots. Simply boil one and a half pounds of baby carrots, and when they’re tender, transfer them to a serv-

ing bowl. Melt a quarter cup of butter and a third of a cup of maple syrup together and drizzle it over the carrots.

Toss to coat, and season with a little salt and pepper.

I usually make cornbread for the table, too, and many people serve rolls with the meal, but you can save some time by purchasing the rolls or buying pre-made dough. If you prefer making them from scratch, save time by baking them a day or two ahead of time.

Of course, I’ve saved the best for last—the dessert. If you still have room after eating that big, delicious dinner, then you’ll be craving what most Americans want for dessert on Thanksgiving: pumpkin pie! Sure, you can serve apple pie or pecan pie, but pumpkin pie is traditional, and especially good with a little whipped cream

or vanilla ice cream on top. It doesn’t have to be complicated to make. In fact, a great time saver with any pie is to buy ready-made pie crust dough. I find that it tastes very similar to crust made from scratch.

To make the pie, mix ¾ cup of sugar, one teaspoon of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of ginger, and a quarter teaspoon of ground cloves in a small bowl. Beat two eggs in a large bowl, and then stir in one 15-ounce can of pureed pumpkin and

the sugar-spice mixture. Gradually stir in a 12-ounce can of evaporated milk.

Pour into an unbaked, deep-dish pie shell, and bake in a 425-degree oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees; bake for another 40 to 50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 2 hours.

All that’s left to do is to sit down and enjoy sampling all of your handiwork.

Just make sure someone else does the dishes! Happy Thanksgiving!

Last Ride of the Season on Winnipesaukee

By Barbara Neville Wilson Rick Kourian doesn’t hesitate a second before he says, “Fall is definitely my favorite time on the lake,” as spray blurs the view of the shore.

“The colors (foliage) are always brighter along the lake. That’s because the temperatures aren’t as cold. I’m always amazed how bright they are, how much longer.”

He turns to his passenger. “This is a fall—a really late fall—boat ride. If you go in the water, you’re in trouble,” he says as he navigates whitecaps in the Broads.

Work Boat 1 jounces across the water on a crisp autumn morning. Boat house bays are open, docks are relatively full, but there’s not another soul on the water under Main Street Bridge, out on Wolfeboro Bay, through Jockey Cove, or across the Broads.

Rick was out on the lake the night before. “It’s different. There are no lights, so navigation is different” than in summer. When you go out at night after Labor Day, and especially after the Columbus Day holiday, it’s beautiful and peaceful, but “It’s more unforgiving. There’s no one out here.”

Rick is well-versed in lake traffic patterns. Most summer folk won’t be seen again until Memorial Day, but “island dwellers are a hardier bunch.”

They’re out on the lake right up until Winnipesaukee freezes over. You have to be careful, though. While on this 43-degree morning, the spray feels

warmer than the air, conditions can change quickly. If something happens, there will be no one to help you.

Although Rick laments that Work Boat 1 is dirty—he’s been away from his boathouse most of the month— its gleaming mahogany and polished chrome are perfect foils to the deep

gray water and pattern of angry blue clouds in the sky.

George Johnson’s mantle. According to the New Hampshire Boat Museum, George “introduced and mentored literally hundreds of folks who developed into wooden boat collectors.” His enthusiasm and knowledge coaxed them to a deep appreciation of craftsmanship and mechanical innovation, often, as in the case of Wolfeboro’s Hank Why, bringing generations of families together in hands-on renovation projects.

Rick may not be the World’s Largest Dealer of wooden boats, but he may be the most enthusiastic keeper of the flame. There’s a lot to be said for a life messing about in boats, and he wants to pass along that love.

Handson boat-building and restoration, and informative programming currently take place only in summer when kids are out of school, says Rick. It’s important to offer programs in fall, winter and spring so more children can take advantage.

Surprisingly, though, Rick says his work at the Boat Museum is not actually about the boats. Granted, they’re beautiful, but the boats are actually just a way into active learning for kids, a way for them to develop practical skills and an appreciation for New Hampshire’s natural water resources and history.

Rick pulls back on the throttle as he passes the future site of the museum, an empty lot where a home once stood. The new building will be twice

as large as the current facility on Lake Wentworth. It will offer administrative space, a function facility, archival storage and climate-controlled display space. Eventually they plan to add a boathouse, too.

Rick is a big fan of boathouses, “Once you have a boathouse, you know what you’ve missed,” he says, especially if you own a wooden boat. Sun is the real issue in wooden boat maintenance.

It wreaks havoc on the carefully-varnished hull. For his boats, he built an open, unembellished boathouse, with innovative screens that block 90 percent of the sun’s rays.

Soon he’ll hoist Work Boat 1 from the water while winter snow falls outside his boathouse. Next year, as spring approaches, he’ll lower it down to water and “hang it” for a week or so, allowing the still-original bottom to swell. Before Ice Out is officially declared, he’ll start plying the waters of Wolfeboro Bay and Jockey Cove during his second favorite season, spring.

The water is quiet and beautiful then.

Meredith Rotary Club 24th Annual Senior Christmas Dinner The Meredith Rotary Club will host the 24th Annual Senior Christmas Dinner on Sunday, Dec. 6 at Interlakes Elementary School.

Those over 55 years of age from Meredith, Moultonborough, Center Harbor and Sandwich may reserve a seat for the occasion.

“The Senior Christmas Dinner is always a fun day that is free of charge for all participants,” according to Betsey Donovan, cochair of the event.

Since 1991, the Meredith Rotary Club has provided a full-course turkey dinner, raffle prizes, music and entertainment, gift bags and a visit from Santa Claus for this much-anticipated celebration.

Last year, 300 people attended the event. The full-course dinner, which is provided and served by

The program will focus on the complex questions and choices we face related to aging and end-of-life care that were foreign to generations past. Cornerstone Celebrates Thirty Years at Gala

Cornerstone Christian Academy invites its alumni and the public to its 30th anniversary Gala Dinner and Silent Auction at Camp Brookwoods in Alton Thursday, November 19.

The theme this year is “30 Years: Walking in Faith” and will feature short reflections from staff and students from throughout the years.

In addition to the anniversary celebration, the Gala is intended as a time to garner more mindful support of its status not only as the sole Christian school in a 40-mile radius, but also the fact that it is the only kindergarten through 8th grade school alternative to public schools in the area. NH Veterans Home to Host Fall Concert Residents, their family members and visitors to the New Hampshire Veterans Home at 139 Winter Street in Tilton will have the opportunity to enjoy world-class live music via musician Lucie Therrien.

Lucie Therrien performs the music of her French Canadian heritage, singing in both Quebcois and English. She has presented culturally diverse programs on five continents. Her concert is November 12 at 2:30 pm.

The concert, which is funded in part by an Arts in Health grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, is part of a wide variety of activities available to residents at the New Hampshire Veterans Home.

November Happenings at Wolfeboro Public Library On Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 pm, the Wolfeboro Public Library will host local writer-historian Mj Pettengill of North Sandwich, who recently published the novel Etched in Granite.

Our New Hampshire countryside of fields and woods are dotted with many reminders of past lives, which we sometimes stumble upon on walks. Ms. Pettengill’s book was inspired by her own discovery of nearly 300 numbered gravestones, with no inscripted names, in Ossipee. When she learned that this was a county pauper cemetery, she was inspired to find out more about those in the graves.. They turned out to be people who had died while living at the Carroll County Poor Farm.

Her research led to a painful picture of life in rural, economically-depressed New Hampshire after the Civil War. Sometimes known as almshouses or poorhouses, the county and town poor farms were large complexes intended for people of all ages, character and circumstances to be housed together.

There were young and old, with often no distinction between those who were vicious, mentally challenged, helpless, or people who had just fallen into tough financial straits; this often resulted in wretched living conditions.

Etched in Granite, the historical novel that eventually came from Pettengill’s discovery on the Ossipee hillside, is an account of life and death on the poor farm – a tragic, yet triumphant story of courage, survival and secrets surrounding lost love. The story is narrated by the three principal characters: Abigail, a young woman facing unimaginable hardship when agonizing circumstances and betrayal lead to life on the poor farm; Nellie, an Abenaki elder and healer enduring great loss while exhibiting resilience during a time of social, racial and religious intolerance; and Silas, a spirited farm boss illuminating the conflicts

of balancing a position of authority with his personal life while navigating small town politics. Their u n f o rg e t t a b l e stories are carefully woven together to reveal a hidden part of our nation’s somber past.

Mj Pettengill is an author, lecturer and American historian. Her focus is on New England history, cultural and social narrative and intergenerational studies. As a freelance writer, she has contributed to numerous magazines and is a facilitator of writing workshops.

In addition, she is a cornetist and performs Civil War Era music and presents oral narratives throughout the northeast. She holds degrees in history and psychology, as well as an MFA in creative writing.

At her November 10 book talk at the library, she will provide fascinating background information on Etched in Granite, entertain the audience with readings from the novel and talk a bit about her work-in-progress book about Abigail’s sister, who went to work in the textile mills of Fall River, Massachusetts.

There will be an opportunity for open dialogue. Pettengill will sign copies of her book, available for purchase that evening. Etched in Granite is also sold at the Country Bookseller in Wolfeboro.

Every other month, a book is selected and copies are ordered through the New Hampshire State Library interlibrary loan system. In order to participate, you simply need to read the book and be at the library on the day of the chat with your thoughts on the book.

The next gathering for talking about First Impressions will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, Nov. 20. The library will serve refreshments at the discussion get-together. Pick up a copy of the book at the Wolfeboro Public Library today – the library is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am to 8 pm and Friday and Saturday from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

The library would also like to remind reading aficionados in all genres that a book chat coffee hour will be held in the library’s meeting room at 10:30 am on Friday, Nov. 6. The informal gettogether is intended as an open forum to swap ideas for recommended reads.
