By Barbara Neville Wilson Imagine having a new guest at this year’s Thanksgiving table. An older woman, with flawless skin and dark hair that belie the 80 odd years-old you know her to be.

Before the blessing is said, everyone takes turns saying what they’re thankful for. “A good education,” says the group’s most recent college graduate.

“Family,” says Aunt Merrilyn. “My health,” intones Grandpa Bob. “My friends,” adds Susann. “My job,” says Tom. “That I’m going to leave this world a little better place,” offers Patty.

When it’s the guest’s turn, she looks around the table from her long-lashed hazel eyes, and her face opens in a long, slow smile. “In truth, my life is a continuous thanksgiving.”

The words sound a little saccharine, a little Pollyanna, don’t they? But when Sarah Josepha Hale, “Mother of Thanksgiving,” spoke them at the age of 85, she had already lived a full life of unexpected blessing, and she was truly thankful. Did you know that she is responsible for your celebration of Thanksgiving this last Thursday of every November? Sarah Josepha Hale lobbied governors and legislatures, Secretaries of State and five presidents for a national day of Thanksgiving before President Abraham Lincoln finally declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

The blessings we so often mention at our Thanksgiving gatherings are ones she would have mentioned, too.

Education: Sarah was born in Newport, NH, in April 1788 to a family that revered the patriots who fought the hard-won Revolutionary War, and that valued education for both the sons and the daughters of the household.

The children were educated at home with tales of their father’s service in the Continental Army, and with the classics and the Bible by their mother.

Seeing a need, David’s fellow Masons stepped forward and paid for the funeral and burial costs, and set Sarah and one of David’s sisters up in the millinery business in Newport. Knowing that at David’s suggestion, Sarah had been writing for publication, they also bankrolled her first book of poems The Genius of Oblivion and Other Original Poems. It was received well enough that Sarah and her sister-in-law closed the hat shop, and Sarah pursued writing full-time, publishing the nation’s first anti-slavery novel, Northwood: A Tale of New England in 1827 to wide acclaim.

Interestingly, the novel was also

the first to devote a whole chapter to Thanksgiving. According to Tori Avey’s blog, “Tori’s Kitchen,” she described a table most of us recognize today: The roasted turkey took precedence on this occasion, being placed at the head of the table; and well did it become its lordly station, sending forth the rich odour of its savory stuffing, and finely covered with the frost of baking. At the foot of the board a surloin of beef, flanked on either side by a leg of pork and joint of mutton, seemed placed as a bastion to defend innumerable bowls of gravy and plates of vegetables disposed in that quarter… Two or three kinds of pies, all excellent, as many of cake, with pickles and pre-

serves, custards and cheese, and cranberry sauce… furnished forth the feast.

A job: Northwood received wide acclaim and brought Sarah to the attention of the founder of “American Ladies’ Magazine and Literary Gazette,” later bought out and renamed “Godey’s Lady’s Book.” In 1837, she was asked to become editor, and for 50 years she was its main writer and fulfilled its mission to publish only original work mainly by women and to improve society through its content. Its circulation grew from 10,000 to more than 150,000 before she retired at 89, and it was the first to publish favorable reviews of writers such as Harriet Beecher (Stowe), Frances Hodgson (Burnett) and Edgar Allen Poe. In becoming the nation’s first “editress,” as she called herself, Sarah broke barriers and earned perks that many would envy today. When the magazine’s headquarters moved from Boston to Philadelphia, for instance, she was allowed to remain in Massachusetts for several years until her youngest son graduated from Harvard, and she was able to use the book’s pages to lobby for causes dear to her heart.

her most notable accomplishment, Sarah was probably thinking of other successes when she said, “In truth, my life is a continuous thanksgiving.”

In her lifetime, she became a leading authority on fashion, architecture, literature and the home. She helped found Troy Female Seminary, a school dedicated to training women educators; Vassar College, a top women’s college; and The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation’s first medical school for women. Her fundraising efforts led to the completion of the Bunker Hill Monument to soldiers of the Revolution, and the preservation of George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

She rallied women across the nation to make dueling “unfashionable,” infant nutrition a priority, kindergarten common, playgrounds ubiquitous, and cleanliness an everyday practice. And she has successfully brought American citizens to a moment of corporate reflection on all their blessings once a year for nearly 200 years.

Sarah Josepha Hale’s was a “life of continuous thanksgiving” in deed.

Museum Curator to Reveal Tips for Safely Preserving Family Heirlooms On Saturday, November 11, from 10 am to noon, Faithe McCreery, curator at the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth Village, will present the first workshop in a series dedicated to helping individuals preserve their family heirlooms.

During the introductory workshop, attendees will learn key tips and professional processes for handling and storing photographs to keep them safe and well preserved for generations to come. Using examples from the Remick collection, among others, Ms. McCreery will share highlights of the history of photography before the digital age, as well as the basics of how to identify common historical formats, the perils of common storage materials and locations, how to handle, store

and display photographs to aid in longterm preservation, and a helpful takehome overview and resource list.

The cost for the workshop is $10 for non-members, $5 for members, and is suitable for participants ages 16 and above; reservations close Thursday, November 9 and are taken by phone.

This is the first workshop led by Ms. McCreery after becoming Remick Museum's first full-time curator in June of 2017. Smokin’ Delicious Smoked Turkey

By Chef Kelly Ross It’s time to think Thanksgiving and in particular, it’s time to smoke a turkey.

For those who haven’t done this, you are in for a treat. Like almost anything, there are a number of different ways and methods to do so. Regardless of your preferred method, you will notice how a smoked bird will make your mouth happy! The flavor is amazing, which is a key reason to cook it this way. Similar to cooking a turkey the traditional way, it is vital to not overcook the bird. It is cooked at a lower heat than it would be when in the oven as it will stay moister this way and it gives the smoke a better opportunity to really work its magic. Besides the flavor, another great reason to smoke your bird is to feer up your oven for the many other dishes that need to be cooked for the big meal. Lastly, another great reason for cooking in this manner is it gives you a reason to duck outside from time to time.

As much as I love and care for my family, it’s nice to get away every now

and then. Now I know what you may be saying. “But I don’t own a smoker.”

Believe it or not, you can make this work on a gas grill or even better, cooked on a large charcoal grill. One thing I STRONGLY suggest is that when smoking, don’t buy a large bird.

Smoking is cooking at a lower heat. As a result, you want to avoid a large bird taking too long to cook. From a health standpoint, you have four hours to get your bird out of the danger zone, which is 40-140 degrees. That would result in you having a bacteria nightmare on your hands. If the bird is too large, you are pushing the limit. Ideally, a 12 to 14lb. bird is the way to go. It not only helps serve a safe bird, but the smaller the bird, the better the flavor. If I am hosting many people for Thanksgiving, I would rather cook two smaller birds than one big one.

One way to help quicken the cooking process and get a nice crispy skin is to spatchcock the turkey, or in layman’s terms, to butterfly it. Yeah, it can be a pain in the you know what if you

haven’t done it before, but once you do it, I think you will be hooked. You basically would have to remove a couple of bones from the bird and as a result, the turkey will lay flat when being cooked. I’ll walk you through the process. Of course, you can also cook the turkey whole.

A few decisions need to be made before starting the cooking process. Do you spatchcock the turkey or do you cook it whole? Are you going to use a smoker or are you going to use a grill?

Another decision that needs to be made is if you want to brine the turkey and if so, do you want to go with a dry brine or a wet one? Decisions, decisions! The brining process has gained popularity in recent years. I am a big fan of brining if smoking or deep frying a turkey, but not so much when cooking it in a traditional fashion. A wet brine is basically salt and water with a ratio of about two cups of kosher salt to one gallon of water and if you don’t have kosher salt, use a cup of table salt to one gallon of water. Stir well until the salt has been dissolved. The turkey needs to be completely submerged in the brine and refrigerated for 12-24 hours. Once the turkey is in the brine, I place something heavy on top of the bird to keep it submerged. Do not over brine or you will taste the salt in the cooked turkey. The brine is meant to keep the bird moist, and when done properly, you will not taste the salt.

As for refrigerating, if you don’t have room in the refrigerator for the bird in the brine, which ideally would be put in a glass or plastic bowl or container, you can do it in a clean cooler. Once you take the turkey out of the brine, it

is important to pat the bird down with a few paper towels, inside and out.

I prefer this method when smoking a whole turkey.

If you have decided to spatchcock the turkey, I prefer a dry brine. I season it fairly heavily and this comes out like a totally different tasting bird, but it is my favorite of all the options. Let me walk you through the cooking process of smoking a whole turkey, then I’ll talk you through spatchcocking the bird and dry rubbing and that cooking process.

First things first: get yourself some flavored wood chips. Apple wood, hickory, or mesquite chips are preferred.

Pat the turkey dry, inside and out, regardless of whether you used a brine or not. If you did not use a brine, rub salt and pepper all over the skin of the turkey and let sit at room temperature while you set up your smoker or grill.

If it is a charcoal smoker, pop in about 10 lb. of briquettes and light them.

Once the charcoals have started to turn gray, pop three to four chunks of woodchips, which should have been soaked in water for an hour or so, on top of the charcoal. Ideally, you want your smoker or grill to be somewhere around the 250-degree range. Place the turkey in the smoker breast side up. Make sure there is plenty of water in the water pan. After an hour or so, check the heat level, the wood chips, and water. As a general rule, you will need to add a dozen or so additional hunks of charcoal. After another hour or so, you will likely have to do the same. As for the water pan, I like to use mostly apple cider vinegar. This will help give it some great flavor and

You want the ideal temp to be at 165 degrees, but I am one who will pull it out a little before that since it will continue to cook once it is pulled.

There isn’t anything worse than a dry, overcooked turkey.

If you are doing your turkey in a charcoal grill, the process is very similar, with a big difference. Get a good bed of coals going, and once they start turning gray, move half the briquettes to one side of the grill and the rest to the other side. In between the piles of charcoal, place a pan of water or cider vinegar. The soaked wood chunks should again go directly on top of the coals. The turkey gets placed over the pan of liquid. Same rules apply. Ideal temp should be around 250 degrees, and keep an eye on adding more charcoal, wood chips or chunks, and liquid. You know what temp you need.

OK, so you want to try this on a gas grill, huh? You may not get quite the same flavor, but it will work fine. In this method, take a bunch of woodchips, unsoaked this time, and wrap them in some tin foil. Stab a few holes in the foil. Light the grill on a high heat. Place the foil pack to the far left of the grill.

Once you see smoke coming from the foil, turn off all the burners except the far left. Place your turkey on the cool side and a small pan of your choice of liquid on the left side. Have a back-up foil pack or two, as well as more liquid.

You will definitely need both.

Things to remember regardless of cooking style: 1) Make sure your turkey is cooked, but not over cooked.

Periodically, always check the temperature.

2) Keep an eye on the charcoal, the liquid, and the wood chips. They will all need to be replenished.

3) Have an accurate thermometer. I can’t stress this enough. Get yourself a digital

thermometer. You can get one for $10-$12. Well worth the small investment. Ordinary thermometers quite often need to be recalibrated, and unless you notice, they will give you bad false readings resulting in overcooking or undercooking things.

4) Regardless of cooking style, try to keep the temperature in the 250-degree range, give or take 20 degrees.

5) If and when you notice any part of the turkey browning more than you want, put small pieces of foil over those areas.

6) If your smoker or grill has vents, leave them about one quarter opened.

So, let’s try your luck at spatchcocking your bird. I truly believe this is the best way to cook/smoke your turkey. You need some knife skills, but in the big scheme of things, I know you can do it. You will need a very sharp knife, some very sharp kitchen shears, and maybe a meat cleaver, depending on your strength.

For starters, you should remove the wishbone. This will make carving much easier down the line. Start by lifting the skin around the neck opening to reveal the wishbone. With the tip of a sharp paring knife, cut into the flesh above both halves of the Y. Slide your finger behind the bone and start pulling it forward. The top should release fairly easily though you still may need the tip of the knife.

The next step is the most difficult, but I know you can do it. With a very sharp pair of kitchen shears, cut along both sides of the backbone. You will likely encounter a tough spot or two that the shears may not be able to get through, in particular with the thigh joints. This is where you want to break out the big tool, being either a strong French knife or a meat cleaver. Save bones if making a stock for gravy or soups.

Once the bone has been removed,

flip the bird over and spread the legs outward. Press down firmly on the breastbone until you feel and hear it crack so the breast will lie flat.

If you have a personal favorite kind of spice rub, go for it. I like to mix two tbsp of kosher salt, one tbsp of paprika, one tsp of smoked paprika, ½ tsp of black pepper, ½ tsp of ground cumin, ½ tsp of ground mustard, ½ tsp of ground coriander, ¼ tsp of cayenne pepper, one tsp of granulated garlic, one tsp of onion powder, one tsp of ground sage, two tbsp of light brown sugar, and the key ingredient is one tbsp of baking powder. The baking powder will add micro-bubbles to help form on the surface of the turkey skin as it cooks, making it nice and crispy. It also will help it brown more efficiently as it smokes/cooks. Baking powder is a key ingredient in any dry rub as far as I’m concerned. Rub the turkey liberally with oil on all surfaces, then rub the bird down with the seasoning mix.

Place the turkey on a pan, loosely wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 24 hours and as much as three days. Not only does this add great flavor, but it also helps the turkey retain its juices.

From this point, go back to the earlier directions for the cooking process depending on how you are going to smoke the turkey. This method will cook your bird quicker than with cooking the bird whole. If cooking on a grill, the bird still goes on the cool side of the grill, but make sure the legs are closer to the hot side of the grill. As long as your heat source continues at a steady 250 degrees, the bird should be done in three hours, give or take.

Like any turkey cooked any style, let it sit for 20 minutes before cutting into it. The carving of this style of cooked turkey is a little different than cutting a traditional cooked turkey.

You still want to remove the legs and wings first. As for the thighs, remove the thigh bone and joint with a sharp boning or paring knife. Scrape as much meat off the bone that you can and slice the thigh meat in ½ inch slices and set on a platter. Cut the two turkey breasts off the breast bone and slice against the grain, also in ½ inch slices and put on the platter as well. Top with the drumsticks and wings and serve and watch everyone smile due to their very happy taste buds.

“A Rustic Woodland Christmas” at Castle in the Clouds The last day of Castle in the Clouds’ regular season was Sunday, October 22, but on November 18 the historic estate re-opens for its popular five-day event, Christmas at the Castle. This is one of the area’s favorite holiday traditions, and this year’s theme, “An Enchanted Rustic Woodland Christmas,” will be interpreted by over a dozen guest decorators displaying their talents both inside and outside the beautiful stone buildings.

The event also features an artisan fair, visits and photo opportunities with Santa, a children’s craft table, and live music. A festive preview party on Friday, November 17, includes a special evening viewing of the decorated

castle, a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, live music and special private access to the Artisans Fair at the Carriage House.

Christmas at the Castle is held on the weekends before and after Thanksgiving: Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 24, 25 and 26.

Hours each day are from 10 am to 4 pm, and tickets good for general admission any day of the event may be purchased at www.castleintheclouds. org or purchased at the door prior to 3 pm each day. Thanksgiving Tips to Keep You on Track

We all love the traditions and food that comes along with Turkey Day. However, we can certainly feel like we’ve “over-indulged” after that extra plate of turkey and gravy and one more piece of apple pie.

Feeling “stuffed” is not only uncomfortable, but also can disturb our digestion. The good news is, there are a ton of simple tips and tricks you can add into your Thanksgiving Day meal to take away the guilt that can often come along with this holiday.

First, make sure you set yourself up to succeed, right from the start. Begin your day with a healthy and balanced breakfast. We tend to believe that if we skip a meal, we can make up for it with a larger meal later on in the day.

However, this is not the case. When we skip a meal, we set ourselves up for our blood sugar to crash and for our bodies to dip into starvation mode where we hold onto food since your body is under a state of stress when you avoid eating.

Here are some wonderful breakfasts that will keep your blood sugar regulated: · Pasture-raised eggs with Ezekiel bread and ½ an avocado · A berry smoothie with a handful of mixed greens and a good quality protein powder · Overnight oats In the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner, try to remember to drink plenty of water!

Aim for half of your body weight in ounces. This will keep you hydrated, which will keep you from feeling sluggish and tired.

If appetizers are provided at your dinner, try to stick to the whole-food options. Whole-food options set you up to feel satisfied. Examples of these include shrimp cocktail, which is an excellent source of protein and veggie trays are great to pick at before dinner begins.

Now moving onto the main event, it is very important that you find balance on your Thanksgiving plate. Start with your vegetable and protein on the plate first. This will look like turkey and either carrots, Brussels sprouts, salad, green beans, etc. This should take up 60% of your plate, then move on to the carbohydrates. These can be your potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato casserole or bread. Try to stick to the one plate rule as well.

As for dessert, I recommend picking one or two small desserts to enjoy. This could be one or two tiny slivers of pie.

If you like to have coffee or tea with dessert, try to leave out the sugar, as you will be enjoying that from the pie/ desserts you are eating.

If you have the time and the weather is cooperating, it can be a nice break in your day to go for a light walk or stroll with your family in-between dinner and dessert or before dinner starts. Even just a 10 or 15-minute walk can add some activity into your day to break up what you are eating.

There are always simple swaps you can add into your meal. Here are some simple swaps for cleaning up your dinner: 1. To make your gravy glutenfree, you can switch to cornstarch to thicken your turkey gravy or gluten-free flour

2. If you are gluten-free, bring your own rolls for dinner or a gluten-free stuffing 3. Bring your own water bottle to drink water on the way to the dinner 4. If you are a guest, bring a dish that you know you can enjoy within what you are eating 5. If you are dairy-free, bring a small Mason jar full of coconut milk or almond milk for coffee or tea In regard to the emotions around eating during a holiday, try to remember these things…

1. We tend to wait all year to eat some of the dishes we eat on Thanksgiving. But remember, you can go out and make or purchase those foods any day of the year! Apple pie, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and turkey can be enjoyed any day of the year. When we feel restricted and like that is the ONLY time we can eat these foods, we tend to over-indulge in fear of not being able to have that food for another 365 days.

2. Thanksgiving is just ONE day. Do the best you can with what you have but if you tend to fall a bit off course, just get back on the bandwagon on Friday morning. This is not an excuse to throw away all of your positive changes and go “off the wagon” until Monday morning.

3. Remember what Thanksgiving is all about. Enjoy your loved ones and your family and the pie will be there too!

broth 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon sea salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 15-ounce can canned pumpkin 2 teaspoons chopped fresh sage leaves, plus whole leaves for garnish 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 cup finely shredded Pecorino Romano cheese, divided Instructions: 1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and shallot and cook, stirring often until softened and just beginning to brown, one to three minutes.

Stir in rice and cook, stirring until the rice grains start to get translucent in spots, about two minutes.

2. Stir in wine and cook, stirring often until the wine has mostly evaporated, two to three minutes.

Stir in broth, nutmeg, salt and pepper, increase heat to high and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer undisturbed until most of the liquid has been absorbed, 30 to 35 minutes.

3. Stir in pumpkin, sage and cinnamon, return to a simmer, and cook, stirring often until the mixture is thickened and the rice is tender, 10 to 15 minutes.

Remove from heat, stir in 1/4 cup Romano cheese, cover and let sit five minutes off the heat to thicken further. Serve sprinkled with the remaining 1/4-cup cheese, more freshly ground pepper and sage leaves for garnish.

Northeastern Ballet Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for their upcoming spring production of “The Pirate and the Gypsy!” This original Edra Toth ballet was last seen in 2009 and captured the imaginations and hearts of the public in both the Lakes Region and Seacoast areas of New Hampshire.

Complete with swashbuckling pirates with real swordplay, a treasure map, beautiful gypsies, a pirate ship and an underwater scene, this ballet is not to be missed! Auditions are open to dancers and non-dancers, boys and girls, and will be held on Saturday, November 11 in Northeastern Ballet Theatre’s Wolfeboro studio (26 Glendon Street, across from Rite Aid) and on Sunday, November 12 at their Dover studio (in The McConnell Center, 61 Locust Street, Suite 239, entrance #8) at the same times in each location: 2 - 2:30 pm - 6 - 8 year olds; 2:30 - 3 pm - 9 - 11 year olds; 3 - 3:30 pm - 12+ not on pointe; 3:30 – 4 pm - 12+ on pointe or pre-pointe. The Music Man Brings Theatre to Wolfeboro The toe-tapping, family-friendly musical The Music Man opened on November 3 in Wolfeboro and will be offered for a two-week run at The Village Players’ Theater on Glendon Street.

Featuring a cast of 57 people, the award-winning show is directed by Rosemary Lounsbury, ably assisted

by Catherine Collins, and produced

by Megan Brady Rohrbacher. With new projection backgrounds by Wolfeboro illustrator Emily Marsh and backed by a nine-piece pit band under the baton of Julie Carbone, the production is equally as engaging for youngsters new to live theater as fans used to entertainment by professional companies.

Meredith Willson’s 1957 awardwinning show revolves around the charming “Professor” Harold Hill, who goes to River City, Iowa in 1912 with a scam to bilk the citizens by promising to lead a boys’ band— when, in fact, he has no musical training at all! Wright Museum of World War II to Host Annual Veterans Day Ceremony The Wright Museum will host the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Saturday, November 11, from 11 am to noon. Rustic Elegance and Fun at the Nov. 12 Fall Bridal Show at Church Landing The latest and most beautiful bridal gowns, fresh flowers, cocktails, glittering table designs, photo booth fun, decadent wedding cake samples, live classical guitar and jazz music, DJs, free copies of the latest bridal magazines at the Wedding Library area and so much more are scheduled for Lakes Region Bride’s annual Fall Bridal Show on Sunday, November 12 at Church Landing in Meredith, NH from noon to 3 pm.

The setting for the show will be the Winnipesaukee Ballroom, where rustic décor meets elegance in an upscale atmosphere sure to delight and inspire brides-to-be who are in the midst of wedding planning.

“We know there are many destination weddings taking place in the Lakes Region, as well as weddings for local couples,” explains Lakes Region Bride’s Kathi Hopper. “Church Landing is the perfect place for the Fall Bridal Show, because it gives us all the space we need to bring the best wedding vendors and creative ideas to engaged couples.”

Indeed, there are many working parts to planning a wedding – the typical attendance at today’s weddings is around 125 guests – from setting the wedding date to shopping for the gown, securing the venue, the cake, photographer, floral designers and more. Storyteller & Mime Antonio Rocha Tells Tales for Children & Adults in Tamworth Friday, November 17 at 7 pm, storyteller and mime Antonio Rocha brings his one-man show to K.A. Brett School in Tamworth. Presented by the Arts Council of Tamworth, Rocha (pronounced “Haw-sha”) will be in residence all week, offering storytelling workshops to K-8 students and community members of all ages.

Bristol Historical Society to Host Potluck Supper and Sing Along The public is invited to an oldfashioned potluck supper followed by a sing-along on Saturday, November 18, in the beautifully refurbished Bristol Town Hall on Summer Street in Bristol commencing with supper at 5:30 pm.

There are currently no kitchen facilities in the hall so you will need to bring your own place settings with your food to share. Coffee and cider will be provided.

After the meal, Libby Danahy will lead everyone in singing some familiar songs (words will be provided) while she plays the Historical Society’s recentlyacquired piano. Other musicians are invited to perform as well. Parking is available in the lot on the corner on School Street and in the square.

Constructed in 1848, the Old Town Hall has served Bristol for 169 years. The beautiful old building has been placed on the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places (2015) and was awarded an LCHIP (Land and Community Historic Investment Program) grant.

People who were married in the church or attended Sunday School since the 1950s are encouraged to bring photos, which will become part of historic displays as the church approaches its 200th anniversary in 2019. Refreshments will be served following the tours.

As the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays approach, thoughts turn to food and handmade items.

The NH Farm Museum in Milton is planning two events that will help you get into the spirit of the season.

On November 18, a unique event titled Old Fashioned Thanksgiving will offer costumed guides providing living history tours of the Jones Farm and discussing the Granite State’s very special connection to the observance of Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the 1860s. Guests will enjoy a sampling station where you can taste some of the food that was current at the time. Admission is $7 for adults/$4 for children/free for Farm Museum members.

A Wreath Making Workshop will take place on November 25 just in time for the festive season.

Wreath making fuses two favorite things: foraging and crafting.

Get Festive at the Gingerbread House Jubilee!

By Sarah Wright They call her “Gingerbread Amy” due to her passion for building gingerbread houses. Actually, Amy Knapp’s husband started calling her that when their home became overrun by the sweet constructions. Looking around at all those gingerbread houses gave Amy and her husband an idea.

Amy’s husband, Geordy Hutchinson, has been a member of the Friends of Abenaki for years, so they put their heads together and decided to share the beautiful gingerbread creations with a larger audience while raising money for the organization. (Friends of Abenaki helps maintain the local

ski hill and trail network.) The holiday season is fast-approaching, and an event to celebrate gingerbread houses would be a wonderful addition to Wolfeboro’s Christmas festivities.

Amy will create dozens of holiday gingerbread houses to put on display at the Gingerbread House Jubilee on Friday, December 8 from 6 pm to 8 pm in the General Wolfe Barn on 518 South Main Street in Wolfeboro.

Anyone is welcome to bring their own gingerbread house creation that afternoon to add to the display.

The event is free, but there will be a silent auction of the houses to benefit Friends of Abenaki. An event for the

What started Amy’s love for all things gingerbread? Amy remembers building her first gingerbread house when she was about eight years old, with her mother. “My mother was born on Christmas Day,” says Amy, “and

making gingerbread houses together was something we began doing every year.” As Amy grew older, she “fell away from it for a while,” until years later when she started making gingerbread houses again with her own daughters. Now she makes the houses year-round. Her mother lives with her for part of the year, and still enjoys seeing Amy carry on the tradition.

Since Amy makes them throughout the year, she’s started incorporating seasonal themes, making houses for spring, summer, and fall. “I recently made a birthday gingerbread house for a cousin,” says Amy. I asked Amy how she preserves her creations, and while she sometimes uses a spray lacquer, she says that just keeping it in an airtight container works well.

Amy has also started offering workshops to teach others about the art of gingerbread house building.

Class size is limited for these fun classes, and locations vary. I struggle with my own gingerbread houses, so I asked Amy for her best tips on house construction, and here is what she’s learned over the years. “Bake the gingerbread thoroughly, so it’s not too soft,” she says, “Even if it’s a little burned on the edges, that’s better than having it fall apart.” Amy has an inexpensive, easy-to-memorize recipe

for her own gingerbread, that doesn’t involve eggs. “I find that it creates a better gingerbread for making houses,” says Amy. Another important tip that makes sense is to decorate the pieces while they’re flat. That way, you won’t have anything sliding down as it dries.

But most of all, Amy says, “Have fun!

Love what you create!”

The rules for the Jubilee are simple.

Houses must be constructed on a 10inch round, not extending beyond that diameter. There will be two divisions of gingerbread house. In the traditional or “just gingerbread” division, houses must be made using only gingerbread and royal icing. (Powdered sugar and granulated sugar may be used for decorating.) In the open division, houses can be decorated with candy.

Amy will allow other adhesives besides royal icing to be used in the open division, but the rest of the house must be edible. Houses can be dropped off at the Barn between 3 pm and 5 pm on December 8. Amy is hoping for close to 100 houses in total!

The month of November is a busy time at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord. Live performances offer something for every age and interest.

Puddles Pity Party will appear at the Capitol Center for the Arts (CCA) on Sunday, November 12 at 7:30 pm.

The ‘Sad Clown with the Golden Voice’ is back with a suitcase full of all new emotional anthems and plenty of Kleenex! As with any Pity Party performance, it’s not all sadness and longing. Puddles’ set is peppered with a brilliant sense of the absurd, mixing lots of humor with the awkward, tender moments.

Broadway/TV star Adam Trent will be bringing his signature brand of magic and illusion to the Capitol Center on Thursday, November 16 at 7:30 pm in a 90-minute stage spectacle. Produced by the creative team behind The Illusionists, the world’s best-selling touring magic show, The Illusionists Presents the Magic of Adam Trent is an immersive entertainment extravaganza of magic, comedy and music designed to entertain the entire family.

Showcasing his “futuristic” brand of magic, Trent has mesmerized live audiences around the globe, in person and as a featured guest on America’s Got Talent, The Today Show, Ellen, the Travel Channel and Disney Channel, among countless other TV appearances. Trent also stars in his own recently-launched, 10-episode TV series The Road Trick on Red Bull TV. Trent inaugurated the first two years of The Illusionists’ THE recordbreaking Broadway runs, which served as a launching pad for his own live show and tour. “I am so excited to hit the road and bring an entirely new show to audiences around the world,” says Trent, who has always thought

magic should be entertaining first and tricky second. He doesn’t want people to remember “tricks” as much as the laughs and memories made with the performance. “This will be a show like you’ve never seen.”

Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) returns to the historic Capitol Center on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 pm.

Performing to critical acclaim and celebrating their 20th anniversary year in 2017 (with over 2,600 shows), Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead concert experience.

Honoring both the band and the fans, the band’s members seek out the unique style and sound of each era, while simultaneously offering their own informed improvisations. This creates a sound that truly encapsulates the energy and the experience.

Dark Star Orchestra’s shows are built off the Dead’s extensive catalog and the talent of seven fine musicians. On any given night, the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring or use their catalog to program a unique set list for the show. In doing so, DSO offers a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon.

Meredith Rotary Club Announces 26th Annual Senior Christmas Dinner The Meredith Rotary Club will host the 26th Annual Senior Christmas Dinner on Sunday, December 3 at Interlakes Elementary School in Meredith. Senior citizens over 55 years of age from Meredith, Moultonborough, Center Harbor, and Sandwich are invited to reserve a seat for the occasion.

“The Senior Christmas Dinner is always a fun-filled event that is free of charge for all participants,” according to Betsey Moulton Donovan, cochairman of the event.

Since 1991, the Meredith Rotary Club has provided a full course turkey dinner, raffle prizes, music and entertainment, gift bags and a visit from Santa Claus for this highly anticipated celebration. Last year, 300 people attended the event. The full course dinner, which is provided and served by the Meredith Rotary Club, will be prepared by Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant of Meredith. Every attendee will receive a holiday gift bag and a raffle ticket for items that will be awarded throughout the afternoon.

“Each gift bag will include a Christmas tree ornament donated by Annalee Dolls, jams and jellies from John Moulton of Moulton Farms, Christmas candy from the Meredith Rotary Club, and other festive treats,” according to David Reid, co-chairman of the event. Music and entertainment will be provided throughout the event.

Reservations are required for this event and seating is limited to 300 people. Service is on a first-come, first-served basis for available seats, with dinner to be served at 12 p.m.

2017 Wolfeboro Festival of Trees is Coming in December The 2017 Wolfeboro Festival of Trees will be held on the weekends of December 9, 10 and 16, 17, and Wednesday evening, December 13.

The Preview Gala will be on December 7 from 6 to 8 pm (by advanced reservations only.)

This year marks the 19th annual Wolfeboro Festival of Trees, a charity benefit featuring more than 65 trees, uniquely decorated by area businesses and organizations, and displayed on two levels at the Wright Museum on Center Street in Wolfeboro. In addition to the trees, the exhibit will feature continuous entertainment and light refreshments.

The Preview Gala is a well-attended cocktail reception that both opens the exhibit and ushers in the Wolfeboro holiday season. Wine and beer are provided and local caterers and restaurants serve samples of their best fare.

Throughout its 18-year history, the Festival has been held at the Wright Museum. Although the museum is

usually closed for the winter season, the exhibits have been open during the festival in previous years. Visitors have been able to tour the unique collection that features artifacts to illustrate the Second World War’s significant and lasting impact on American life.

Each year, the Festival committee reviews applications from many area charitable organizations, and selects one or more beneficiaries for the event. The selected organizations then provide volunteers and other support to the committee to conduct the event.

Substantially all of the net proceeds are then given to the beneficiary organizations.

This year’s Festival entertainment will feature a variety of performers.

On Saturday, December 9, the Bell Ringers perform at 10 am, followed by Bob Viscio, guitar and vocal and 11 am and noon, Harold Chamberlin and the New England Country Boys at 1 and 2 pm and Lance MacLean at the Moose Mountain String Band at 3 pm.

However, nothing could be further from the truth. The overwhelming amount of information available from the internet actually makes it more difficult to make informed decisions, whether you are looking for something to read for fun or you need information to make a major life decision. Turning to the Web to find answers can feel like asking for a sip of water and being handed a firehose.

As trained professionals, librarians know how to help you find the very best information that suits your needs.

can literally give you millions of options, finding what you want can be overwhelming. A librarian can help you narrow things down.

Parenting New Hampshire Magazine Names Science Center “Family Favorite” Award Recipient Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness has been selected by the readers of Parenting New Hampshire as a “Family Favorite” award recipient for favorite Environmental and Educational Center.

The Family Favorite awards, now in its seventh year, is an award program that recognizes family-friendly businesses, services, and places in almost 50 categories – as chosen by the readers of Parenting New Hampshire magazine. Categories include Family Restaurant, Shopping, Activities & Learning, and Family Services.

“The Family Favorites award program recognizes those places, people, and things that make New Hampshire a great place to raise a family,” said Melanie Hitchcock, editor of Parenting New Hampshire.

Variety of Fascinating Events in November at Taylor Community Aimee Fogg Program Six years ago, Aimee Fogg traveled to Belgium to learn about her great uncle’s death in World War II. Today, she has a new appreciation for life – and a growing collection of adopted relatives.

Fogg, who lives in Gilford, has collected stories and photos of the 40 New Hampshire and 25 Vermont men buried in the Henri-Chapelle American

Cemetery and Memorial. She published the stories in a pair of books and she’s now documenting the accounts of 54 soldiers from Maine.

She will share her story in a presentation scheduled for Wednesday, November 8 at 6:30 pm in Taylor Community’s Woodside Building on Union Avenue in Laconia. This free event is open to the public.

Dr. Jennifer Seavey Presents Sholes Marine Laboratory Dr. Jennifer Seavey is the Kingsbury Executive Director of Shoals Marine Laboratory, Appledore, Maine, a joint facility of the University of New Hampshire and Cornell University.

She will present a program on the lab, on Monday, November 20 at 6:30 pm in Taylor Community’s Woodside Building. This free event is open to the public.

Doctor Seavey is an applied ecologist focused on anthropogenic impacts on marine and avian species. Her research program explores climate change; spatial ecology; conservation biology; and the recovery of endangered species. Her academic achievements include a Ph.D. in Natural Resource Conservation from the University

of Massachusetts; M.S. in Wildlife Science from the University of Washington; and a B.S. degree is in Biology from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon.

Personally, she’s very committed to the sustainability of our nation’s field stations and marine laboratories.

She serves as a board member for the Organization of Biological Field Stations and on the steering committee of the Northeastern Coastal Stations Alliance.

New England Christmas 2017, by the Pontine Theatre This year’s Christmas program includes a humorous story poem, “The Untold Adventures of Santa Claus”

by New Hampshire’s Master of Light Verse, Ogden Nash, and a wonderful memoir, “Christmas in Our Town,” written by Hanover’s Alice Van Leer Carrick.

This free program is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29 at 6:30 pm in Taylor Community’s Woodside Building and is open to the public.

Pontine Theatre is a two-member ensemble founded in Portsmouth, NH in 1977. Using puppetry, masks, toy theatre figures and projected images, Pontine brings New England stories to life onstage. Pontine is a resident company at Strawberry Banke Museum.

Comics Workshop with Marek Bennett Join NH teaching artist Marek Bennett in a Comics Workshop and learn how cartoonists build entire worlds and universes out of the simplest materials. The workshop will take place on November 7 at 5:30 pm, at the Gafney Library in Sanbornville and is recommended for grades 4 and up and adults of all abilities.

Using only blank pages, pencils, and ink, Marek will help participants craft dynamic characters and rich settings, and bring them to life in comic panels, strips, and pages. Marek Bennett teaches music and comics in New England and the world beyond.

He holds an M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction from Keene State College and is a rostered teaching artist with

Yester year White Mountain Painters - Capturing Nature’s Beauty

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Artists love beauty. Whether in summer or winter, whatever the location, if an artist responds to nature’s landscapes, he or she has a desire to interpret what they see in a creative medium, be it a drawing or painting or photograph.

Over the years, the sweeping grandeur of the White Mountains of New Hampshire have been interpreted in books, poems and by numerous artists. From the mid-1800s, when hiking and travel to rural areas for summer vacations became fashionable, artists have traversed remote country roads and sometimes crude mountain

paths to glimpse and set down their visions of the hills via their chosen artistic medium.

Hundreds of painters have visited the White Mountains, but the best known are those of the “White Mountain School.”

These painters may have been visiting the area as early as the 1820s or 30s, when sketches of the hills began to circulate. Soon, two landscape artists, Thomas Doughty and Thomas Cole, traveled to the northern New Hampshire area.

visit the area with his friend, Henry Cheeves Pratt. The purpose of the trip was to explore the region. Cole must have found the mountains to his liking and inspiration, because a number of beautiful paintings were the result of the visit.

Cole and Pratt climbed Chocorua, a mountain that was to become a favorite of writers and artists. At that time, trails were few and roads primitive.

The climb was difficult, according to Cole’s writings. So awed was Cole of the view from Chocorua, he wrote that the scene was too “extended and map like for the canvas”, and it was not for sketches, but rather for “thoughts” that he climbed Chocorua.

Cole walked the mountains and wilderness trails of the White Mountains, impressed by the scope and beauty of the area, in particular of the Great Stone Face (Old Man of the Mountains). He was among the first artists to explore and produce paintings of the northern portion of New Hampshire. His paintings of the mountains were exhibited as far away as at the Royal Academy in London, bringing the remote White Mountains to the larger world.

Perhaps Cole’s paintings and writings of the White Mountains prompted the steady trickle of artists

who found their way to the inspirational hills. By the 1850s, A. B. Durand, one of the fathers of the American landscape and a Hudson River School (of art) leader, had visited the White Mountains. According to Chronicle of the White Mountains by Kilbourne, Durand produced many paintings of such areas as North Conway, Campton and Franconia Notch. The paintings have hung in public, as well as private collections.

Because of the number of artists who painted in the White Mountains, some have been forgotten over time.

A great source of information about White Mountain artists was Benjamin Champney, who, in the last years of his life published a memoir of the artists of the area.

Champney died at age 90 in 1907. His first trip to the White Mountains was many years earlier, in 1838, according to Consuming Views: Art and Tourism in the White Mountains, 1850-1900, a publication of the New Hampshire Historical Society. On that early visit, Champney produced sketches of the scenery. After that, he studied in Europe for a number of years.

The pull of the majestic White Mountains was still strong, and Champney made another visit to the Saco River/North Conway area in 1850 with two other artists. They lodged with a local resident and made friends in the area. It was a successful trip, and the artists stayed for the entire summer and into the autumn, hiking and sketching among the mountains.

By the following summer, artists were flocking to the northern New Hampshire mountains and when Champney returned, he found other artists already living at the Kearsarge House. The next few years saw the number of artists swell, and by 1855 the hills and fields were populated by men and women sketching and painting all they saw.

After his marriage in the 1850s, Champney acquired a home in the area and made it his permanent summer resident. In his writings, Champney stated that the area was at one time as famous as any European or New York artist’s colony.

Men were not the only ones who came to the White Mountains to capture the scenic beauty. Women, too, ventured to the area and for some of those female painters, it was due to the influence of Champney. He mentored both male and female artists in Boston, and according to a historical catalog for a Museum of the White Mountains exhibit Taking the Lead: Women and the White Mountains by Marcia Schmidt Blaine, one of those artists, Anna C.

Freeland, came to Jackson, NH to teach art classes. This was during the 1880s and Anna was a member of the Boston Art Club (Champney also was a member of the club).

Some painters set up residence at White Mountain hotels of choice and became artists in residence during the summer months. Emily Harris Selinger and her husband, Jean Paul, were resident artists at the Glen House and later the Crawford House, according to Taking the Lead.

It must have been an idyllic lifestyle for the artistic couple. The White Mountain Echo in the 1880s reported that Mrs. Selinger painted florals and socialized at her studio at the Glen House “received every afternoon, surrounded by her own beautiful pictures of roses and chrysanthemums.”

The Selinger’s offered paintings for sale to hotel guests; in an age when photography was in its infancy, there was little to remember a White Mountain vacation except in memory.

But when the Selingers arrived on the scene, a guest could purchase paintings of area scenes that the talented couple had captured on canvas.

Not only were the Selinger artists, they also were, according to Consuming Views, at the center of the hotel’s social and literary life. (This was at the Crawford House, where they served as artists in residence after 1894.)

However, other female artists resided and sometimes taught classes at more modest hotels and inns in the area.

Another famous artist, Frank H. Shapleigh of Boston, painted in the

White Mountains for about 15 years beginning in the late 1870s. Among his well-known paintings are views of Mount Washington.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art received a painting of the White Mountains, when “Madison and Adams from Randolph Hill” was donated to the museum in 1891. The painting was done by Homer Martin, another artist who summered in the mountains.

Although difficult to imagine from today’s modern viewpoint, during the 1800s the White Mountains were still largely unsettled. While there were hamlets and towns, such as Conway, trails and crude roads linked mountain communities. The artists who came to the area during those years had

to be prepared physically, as well as emotionally, for life in the wild. Hiking was the primary means of getting to the natural scenes everyone wanted to catch on paper and canvas. That meant not only hiking through miles of wilderness, but also camping out in the forests and seeking lodgings at a rural farm along the way. (Not all were as lucky as the Selingers to serve as artists in residence, with an indoor studio and comfortable lodgings.)

Still, artists continued to come to the mountains for a chance to set down their visions of the beauty around them. They sensed the spirituality of the area, and created an entire culture and method of painting.

Ring in the Holidays With Open House at Heritage Park Railroad Museum Begin your holiday season with family and friends at an Open House on Sunday, November 26, from 9 am to 4 pm, at the Heritage Park Railroad Museum in Union, NH. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Explore the many aspects of the historically accurate model project with its extensively detailed historic structures, steam locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and the many fascinating details amongst the impressive landscaped scenery, which includes Moose Mountain.

A new addition to the museum’s model railroad is a computer-

controlled operating system. While the installation is in its initial stages, the German-produced software program provides prototypical control functions of moving trains. For example, a passenger train stops and departs automatically from railroad stations as it follows its designated route throughout the miniaturized landscape.

said the group, representing seven NH towns, has been working on the railroad diorama for nearly five years.

The special Open House is being held concurrently with the 23rd annual Tour de Chooch. Tour de Chooch is a self-guided tour of 29 model railroads in southeastern NH and north shore Massachusetts.

In addition to regional visitors interested in trains and history, rail buffs and model train Tour de Chooch visitors from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and NH are expected to participate in the hosted tours and demonstrations.

Town of Hebron named Certified Local Government The N.H. Division of Historical Resources has announced that the National Park Service has designated the Town of Hebron as a Certified Local Government, joining 21 communities in the state to have achieved this distinction.

The Certified Local Government program in New Hampshire promotes the preservation of historic buildings and districts, archaeological sites, structures, landscapes and objects by establishing a partnership between local governments, the NHDHR and the National Park Service.

A municipality wishing to become a Certified Local Government must fulfill certain requirements indicating its commitment to local preservation, including establishing either a historic district commission or a heritage commission with historic district responsibilities.

First settled in 1765 and incorporated in 1792, Hebron remains an iconic small New Hampshire town. Its Historic Village District was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985; seven of those properties were listed to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Created by the 1980 amendments to the National Historic Preservation Act, the Certified Local Government program requires the NHDHR to designate at least 10 percent of its annual federal Historic Preservation Funds to support Certified Local Governments.

These grants can be used to fund

community preservation activities such as historic survey and inventory of buildings and archaeological sites, nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, preservation planning, heritage education, historic structures reports and other pre-development work, and brick and mortar projects.

Other benefits of the program include technical assistance from the NHDHR on local planning issues, special training opportunities, and a role in commenting on nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.

New Hampshire’s Division of Historical Resources, the “State Historic Preservation Office,” was established in 1974. The historical, archaeological, architectural and cultural resources of New Hampshire are among its most important environmental assets.

Historic preservation promotes the use, understanding and conservation of such resources for the education,

inspiration, pleasure and enrichment of New Hampshire’s citizens. For more
