The 2026 Season at The Wright Museum of World War II

By Mark Okrant As reported numerous times in The Laker throughout the years, the Granite State is home to a number of excellent museums. One of this writer’s favorites, the Wright Museum of World War II, was founded in 1994, for the purpose of making future generations aware of the sacrifices and contributions by countless Americans during the Second World War. Located at 77 Center Street in Wolfeboro, the museum has an extremely clever exterior design that passers-by simply cannot ignore. On one side of the building, it appears as though a large tank just blasted through the red brick exterior, heading straight for the street.

In the case of the Wright Museum, the surprises do not end there. The Wright offers two large galleries: one devoted to the military theater and a second that presents the way lives were lived here in the states during the war years. The clever design of the museum simultaneously satisfies those with an interest in the strategy, technology, and regalia of the battleground, while others can experience the film, fashion, culture, and innovations that evolved on the home front.

With more than 14,000 items in its collection, the Wright Museum offers a wealth of special artifacts and dioramas, highlighted by three different types of tanks and a 1939-45-time tunnel that depicts changes occurring at home. It is attention to detail about the home front that truly sets this museum apart. Where else can you view a

period soda fountain and a timeline of household items during the war years?

While older visitors will revel in the photographs and artifacts provided by the curators, the collection is certainly relevant to every generation and gender.

In addition to its excellent permanent display, this museum has become increasingly interactive—with several touch screens and four sound stick displays—characteristics that are particularly popular among younger audiences. The museum is open daily through October 31, with exhibits, military vehicles, and its popular “Time Tunnel” depicting life in America during World War II. As always, the Wright and its curating partners clearly capture timeless themes that are significant to citizens of this country. At times, it has been immigration, prejudice, civil rights, heroism, and what it means to be an American. However, while making one’s way through the special exhibits, visitors learn that the privileges

we take for granted are not shared universally. Each exhibit—while portraying events from more than three-quarters of a century ago—has current relevance. Current Seasonal Exhibits (through October 31) are: From Sails to Atoms-The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – “In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the Wright Museum will be highlighting one of New England’s most enduring contributions to the nation’s history: the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The shipyard has a long and storied history. In its early days, notable ships such as the USS Washington and USS Congress were built there. In 1855, the shipyard also was responsible for the overhaul of “Old Ironsides,” the USS Constitution. The first submarine built at the shipyard was the USS L-8 in 1917. During World War II, the shipyard’s production of submarines was prolific, tallying more than 70 subs, including a record four launched in a single day. In the Cold War era, the

yard was home to the construction of the revolutionary USS Albacore, the first teardrop-hull submarine.”

Always Vigilant-Civil Air Patrol from WWII through Today – “The Civil Air Patrol is a congressionally chartered, federally funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation that serves as the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Founded on December 1, 1941, to mobilize the nation’s civilian aviation resources for national defense service, CAP has evolved into a premier public service organization that is a cost-effective force multiplier for Air Force-assigned missions. This special exhibit will highlight the role of CAP in civil defense, emergency response, and other missions throughout its history.

Featuring historic objects, videos, and interactives, this exhibit is great for all ages.”

Again, this season, the popular series of Wright Education Programs will consist of lectures and book signings by authors. Attendees at this season’s series will be charged $12 for non-members and $8 for Wright Museum members. Programs will be held in the DuQuoin Education Center, on Tuesdays on the first floor. Most sessions begin at 7 pm and consist of a lecture followed by a question-and-answer session. These sell out fast, and the museum recommends advance reservations for these programs. Additionally, the following event promises to provide entertainment for a range of attendees: August 15, 2026 – Cruise In to the Wright, the museum’s annual antique and classic vehicle gathering. Dozens of antique cars, hot rods, and motorcycles will return to the museum.

While at the Wright Museum, you should spend an additional hour or more viewing the facility’s permanent collection. Even if you have visited before, there is much to uncover. It is guaranteed that each trip to the Wright will be like a treasure hunt, wherein a visitor finds objects that were not noticed previously.

The Wright Museum is open from May 1 through October 31. Museum hours are Monday-Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from 12 to 4 pm. Michael Vincent Band Heads to Cate Park Saturday Night As the month of July quickly comes to a close, another act graces the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand in Cate Park.

The Michael Vincent Band will be making its Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand appearance on Saturday, July 25.

The Michael Vincent Band was born more than a decade ago in central New Hampshire. The band members were all students at the same school and stayed busy working as a trio, and eventually picked up a fan base as word spread around the state.

A road trip in 2009 landed the band in Mississippi, where the band members received a college education’s worth of blues schooling over the course of a few years.

From there, the band began hitting the road more often, playing from San Antonio, Texas, to Key West, Florida, to Boston, and everywhere in between.

The thousands of miles of road and hundreds of honky-tonks serve as the backdrop for what the Michael Vincent Band does, which is play the blues.

The band has been touring the state of New Hampshire over the last few years, playing a lot and refining new covers and originals to add to their set.

The Michael Vincent Band includes

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand are excited to welcome The Michael Vincent Band to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee this summer as the band brings a taste of what is to come on the blues front.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series takes place each Saturday night throughout the months of July and August. The Wolfeboro Community Bandstand is located in Cate Park on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in downtown Wolfeboro. The concerts start at 7 pm and run for two hours with a short intermission.

The concerts are free to the public, though a pass-the-bucket offering is taken during intermission to help the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand offset the cost of the summer concert series.

In the event of inclement weather, there will be signs posted at the entrances to the park announcing the concert’s cancellation. There will also be a post on the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand Facebook page or at wolfeborobandstand.org.

Report Wild Turkey Brood Sightings Online This Summer The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is asking for the public’s help by reporting wild turkey brood sightings this spring and summer. Participation is easy, and the survey is now open. If you observe groups of turkeys with poults (juvenile birds) between June 1 and August 31, please report your sightings by visiting: https://docs. google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeSnV1WDNF0UuS-x8PIoIyovHKkwEDRbdBrmY-8JmIcgmn1Q/viewform?usp=dialog.

“The information collected through this survey is used to measure the annual reproductive success of New Hampshire’s wild turkey population,” said NH Fish and Game Turkey Project Leader, Dan Ellingwood. “Data from this survey are also shared with the National Wild Turkey Federation Technical Committee as part of a national effort to monitor wild turkey population trends across the United States.”

Brood reports submitted in June and July are used to estimate nest initiation and hatch timing based on reported poult body size, which serves as a proxy for age in young birds. These data provide insight into how environmental conditions during the spring and early summer influence nesting chronology and reproductive success. Through the first week of July, 133 brood reports have been received this year. Preliminary analyses indicate that nest timing has been typical, with an estimated mean hatch date in the first week of June. Additional reports received throughout the

remainder of the survey period will further refine this estimate and help detect renesting attempts that may occur following nest failure or brood loss.

Brood reports submitted in August are used to calculate regional poult-per-hen (PPH) ratios, an index of annual population recruitment, or the relative size of the “graduating class” of juvenile turkeys that will enter the adult population. Because wild turkeys have relatively short lifespans, consistent annual recruitment of young birds is essential for maintaining stable populations over time.

Many factors influence turkey productivity. Poults are particularly vulnerable to cool, wet weather, which can reduce survival directly by causing hypothermia and indirectly by suppressing insect populations, an essential source of protein during early development.

Because spring weather conditions are highly variable from year to year, nesting success and poult survival are inherently unpredictable and must be monitored annually to maintain a pulse on population trends.

On Tuesday, July 28, the Wright Museum will welcome Alex Kershaw.

This is the tenth program of the Wright Museum’s 2026 Education Series.

In the early morning hours of October 24, 1944, the legendary U.S. Navy submarine Tang was hit by one of its own faulty torpedoes. The survivors of the explosion struggled to stay alive one hundred-eighty feet beneath the surface, while the Japanese dropped deadly depth charges. As the air ran out, some of the crew made a daring ascent through the escape hatch. In the end, just nine of the original eightyman crew survived.

But the survivors were beginning a far greater ordeal. After being picked up by the Japanese, they were sent to an interrogation camp known as the “Torture Farm.” When they were liberated in 1945, they were close to death,

but they had revealed nothing to the Japanese, including the greatest secret of World War II. Doors open at 6 pm, the program begins at 7 pm, on Tuesday, July 28, at the Wright Museum’s DuQuoin Education Center, 77 Center Street in Wolfeboro.

Celebrating 100 Years of the Sandwich Home Industries

Story and photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper This summer’s exhibit at the Sandwich Historical Society is a nod to the people – mostly women – who started a handicraft shop to sell their creations.

Old photographs, information peppered throughout the gallery, and many beautiful handmade items, from hooked rugs to pottery, baskets, woven items, and more, comprise the exhibit.

The display offers a fascinating look back at the Sandwich Home Industries, an organization that led to the founding of the statewide, respected League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.

Titled “Beauty and Utility: A Century of the Sandwich Home Industries,” the exhibit will be on view until Sept.

5, 2026. Housed within the Sandwich Historical Society, the exhibit fills the gallery space with wonderful old photos of early members and events, how the Industries formed, such things as a tea room and committees that oversaw the workings of the group, and images of the (mostly) women who ran the first shops each summer.

None of this would have happened without the support and vision of a Sandwich area summer resident, Mary Coolidge. Although well off, Mary and her husband, J. Randolph Coolidge, respected the talents of local people and

They wanted to help, and they did so in a way that would bring positive change to the tiny town of Sandwich in the 1920s.

Born in 1862 into a wealthy family in Boston, Mary wed architect J. Randolph Coolidge, Jr., and the couple

summered in the Sandwich area. The Coolidges became year-round residents of Sandwich after 1924, but they did not sit quietly in their later years.

Mr. Coolidge represented the town in the state legislature, and Mary was drawn to the craftwork of local women.

Mary felt passionate about the quality arts and crafts she saw Sandwich

area women producing. She knew their work was worthy of display, and she wanted to find a way for the women to sell the work to the outside world.

Mary encouraged them to sew, to make baskets and hooks, and to also braid and weave rugs that could be marketed. With this goal in mind, she undertook a huge project in 1926. With a local committee’s help, Mary arranged an exhibit of 100 local antique and modern rugs in the Wentworth Library.

Summer resident Carl Beede was the editor in 1926 of a weekly section in the Christian Science Monitor. He had friends in high places, and persuaded Mr. Chandler of Boston’s Jordan Marsh Store to attend the exhibit. Chandler headed the store’s rug department and brought samples of fine rugs for Sandwich women to see, and he judged the rugs in the exhibit.

One article in a local paper explained that the rug exhibit was the beginning of a new cooperative industry “using wool produced and grown on Sandwich hillsides, spun and dyed in Sandwich homes and worked into original Sandwich designs.”

• Sandwich Home Industries continued from page 10 just an exhibit: to make the new group successful financially. The goal was to open a shop where the fine, handmade articles from the area would be sold.

Mary also wanted to offer refreshments at a tearoom to visitors.

The group of women leased a local building, the Heard store, for a salesroom. The Baptist Ladies Aid allowed the group to use the Christian Endeavor Hall as a tearoom. Old photos of these early buildings are shown at the start of the exhibit.

The newly formed Sandwich Home Industries sold many things in their shop, including baskets, woodwork, rugs, children’s clothing, ironwork, knitted goods and candles. Soon local men who were handy and artistic also became consignors for the shop, offering handmade baskets and fireplace tools. Some of these items have survived and are owned by local families; the items are part of the Historical Society exhibit.

Early crafting demonstrations showed the public what the creative Sandwich people were doing. It was a great way to educate the public, while also selling wares to eager buyers.

Lauren Hansen, museum and collections coordinator for the Sandwich Historical Society, says that while many area residents at that time did

not have a great deal of money to buy the crafted items, tourists certainly did.

They vacationed in the Sandwich area and bought rugs, woven items, woodworking, and much more.

A cornerstone of the exhibit is a large portrait painting of a young Mary Coolidge with her son, which is on loan from the New Hampshire Historical Society. It was painted by Anna Elizabeth Klumpke, who had it exhibited in Paris.

Information in the Historical Society’s large exhibit room traces the story of how the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen was formed. A large sign advertising the League of N.H. Craftsmen Sandwich Home Industries Craft Shop is an older piece and interesting to those who know the story of the League’s beginnings.

A particular old photo shows an early Industries crafter, Lillian Heard, leading a needlework gathering. The women look to be having fun as they learn a craft that required skill. It is just such images that bring the exhibit to life and trace the works of the group, from selling their wares to sharing their knowledge via craft classes.

Beautiful handmade items fill the walls and display areas and tell the unique and incredible story of creativity, dedication, and fortitude.

Yester year Visionary Early Settlers: The Courageous Leaders Who Built the Lakes Region

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper It takes courage and endurance to travel into the unknown. It also takes a spirit of adventure to settle in a place that is remote and perhaps dangerous.

That was the story of the early settlers in and around the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The towns we know today – Gilford, Laconia, Meredith, Moultonborough, Wolfeboro, and Bristol, to name but a few, were vastly different places in the 1700s. These areas were hamlets at best and began with a modest population and a few log cabins surrounded by thick woods.

However, even small groups of settlers needed some form of rules for land ownership and boundaries, and laws to handle misdeeds, etc. As the years went on, citizens of even remote communities knew about the Revolutionary War, which was brewing.

Residents had to decide if they would form a militia and support the effort for self-government or remain loyal to the king. War could break out at any time, and it might mean taking up arms, leaving their land and families and stepping onto the battlefield.

Each community needed a leader men with a natural-born ability to take charge when called upon to oversee things. In Gilmanton, in the winter of 1761, Benjamin Mudgett and his wife, from another New Hampshire town some distance away, arrived in what would become Gilmanton. They had walked over 10 miles, and Mrs. Mudgett was said to be the first woman to arrive in the area.

They were soon joined by other families, such as the John Mudgetts, and Orlando Weed and his wife. For a time, they were the only three families in that area and they endured a difficult, snowy

season in their new home. It might be difficult for present-day people to understand what such a winter was like and the hardships they endured: living in small structures, huddling around the fire, eating a meager diet of dried food such as beans and hunting for game in deep snow. Keeping warm and foraging for food were probably the major business of that winter.

More Mudgett family members (some with the last name of Bean) arrived to settle in the ensuing years.

Mrs. (Benjamin) Mudgett, the wife of the original settler, gave birth in 1764 to the town’s first male child, Samuel Mudgett. She lived a long life, dying at age 95. It is likely she never forgot her first months in the remote area but a vision of owning land and living free kept Mrs. Mudgett and her husband there.

Captain Joseph Badger was an original proprietor of Gilmanton and also settled in the area (around the time of the Mudgett’s arrival). Badger was probably a born leader and those in the community respected his knowledge and were confident in his decisions. Interestingly, it is written that after moving to the area from Haverhill, Massachusetts, he gathered neighbors to help him raise his barn. After the build was completed, Badger invited every man, woman and child to take supper with him. Such kindness endeared Badger to his neighbors and cemented their respect for him.

Gilmanton saw its men involved in the fight for freedom in the Revolutionary War. Colonel Antipas Gilman was sent to a deliberative convention in Exeter, New Hampshire, showing his leadership skills. Men in the town volunteered and Gilmanton’s Lieutenant

These early men and women that fought terrible weather, the dangers of living in the woods, and war, settled what would later become the town of Gilmanton with a growing population as the years went by.

In Meredith, New Hampshire, early settler, Colonel Ebenezer Smith, an agent of the original grantees, was a leading member of the town. Smith contributed much to the growth of the town and has not been forgotten these many years later.

As people were considering journeying to the area, they were urged by Smith to settle in Meredith and become farmers. According to historical information at www.meredithnh.gov, in 1768 the settlement was incorporated as a town by colonial Governor John Wentworth and the General Court… from the beginning, the more industrious, led by Colonel Smith, began to utilize the rivers and streams to power saw mills and grist mills, two fundamental industries in every town.

History tells us that Smith led Meredith men as the Revolutionary War was upon the country. Over the years, Smith was a leader in Meredith and is considered its founding father. With foresight, Smith owned a great deal of land in the town. Early on, he saw the value of water power, something many settlers would not have had the initiative to identify. Eventually, Smith and a partner, John Jenness, harnessed the water power and used it for such things as a saw mill. Later, a grist mill opened for business. Both mills credited Smith’s early vision.

An article at www.lwhu.us (Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society) titled Meredith Village: An Historical Overview, relates that many things can be credited to Smith, such as organizing the settlement into an incorporated township in 1768, leading the town to fight in the Revolutionary War, and

acting as a representative for Meredith and the surrounding communities in the provincial and state governments.

According to information on the Meredith Historical Society’s website (www.meredithhistoricalsocietynh. org), a book titled “Ebenezer Smith, Meredith’s Prime Mover: Biography of a Local, State, and National Founding Father” by Rudy VanVeghten delves deep into the life of Smith.

An original settler of Gilford was Revolutionary War veteran, Samuel Jewett, who built a home in the area in 1777. (However, there is some doubt if he was the first to settle there.) In “The Gunstock Parish: A History of Gilford, New Hampshire” by Adair Mulligan, it is related that Jewett built a log house in Gilford in 1777, but some records point to at least 12 men settling in present-day Gilford before Jewett purchased the lot for his cabin.

Another early settler in Gilford was Daniel Avery, who was a successful businessman in the village. He was living in Gilford by 1790 and started a trading business by a bridge on a trafficked road. Things must have gone well for Avery because he soon enlarged his business holdings and built a factory. All this made him one of the most heavily taxed people in the town, but he paid his bills and was respected by his neighbors.

Heading toward the northern New Hampshire mountains, the village of Sandwich was chartered in 1763.

In that year, Governor Benning Wentworth divided a tract of land into 72 shares, some of which were given to various groups as well as to individuals.

At 38 years of age, Daniel had the right stuff: good judgement, great prudence, and “unfailing hospitality” as was listed as his attributes. Although his father was strict that Daniel not waste his time reading and studying, he did so and learned about mathematics, trigonometry and surveying. His knowledge as a surveyor won him the job of mapping out the land in Sandwich, which led to his subsequent residence there.

In the fall of 1767, Daniel and his wife and a few others journeyed to Sandwich and chose a spot for a house.

It would have been a difficult trip, as they pushed through swamps, forests, and meagre paths to show them the way. They chose the spot and built a log cabin immediately. It was lucky they made shelter because a snowstorm was soon upon them.

The group, led by Daniel, must have stuck it out and prospered. As a natural leader, Daniel was respected as seen by the first town meeting being held at his house in 1772. He was chosen as town clerk, a member of the first board of selectmen, and Justice of the Peace for the town. He was later appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Stafford County. But his work did not end there when he was a delegate to the first Constitutional Convention in 1791 – 1792.

These men (and women) journeyed through thickly forested and sometimes dangerous territory and used their wits to survive. They took the chance to carve out lives of independence and to prosper. They were good neighbors and well respected in their communities. Their towns grew, largely because these people led the way as true visionary early settlers.

‘On The Lake’ Exhibit through July at Meredith League of NH Craftsmen The League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, Meredith Fine Craft Gallery, invites you in for our July exhibit, On the Lake. This exhibit welcomes in the summer and celebrates the lakes region with gorgeous, handcrafted pieces of all kinds by more than a dozen juried artists.

Through all the mediums and styles on display, this exhibit captures the breadth of activities and sights found on and around the water. Photography and handcrafted prints by numerous artists showcase tranquil shorelines, lake wildlife, and scenic mountain views that evoke summer days spent outdoors. Cheryl Miller, Christine Pellerin, and Rachel Benson bring the colors and textures of the region to life through felted, woven, and stitched works, while John Drost and Carter Harrison capture the essence of the lake through vibrant, blue-dyed maple oil lamps and beautifully turned wooden bowls accented with lake-shaped blue resin, reflecting the colors and contours of New Hampshire’s waters. Glass artists Karen Reed and Steve Giles capture shimmering waters and beloved lake motifs in stained glass creations that will shine through lake-house windows, and Becky Sawyer offers wearable reminders of time spent by the water through thoughtfully crafted

pieces inspired by loons, sailboats, colorful shoreline sunsets, and other lakeside treasures.

In this 2-hour class, students will have fun hammering and stamping metal to make their own custom sterling silver pendant. Recycling Collection on July 25: Bring Out Your Plastics Weather permitting, the next soft plastics/styrofoam recycling collection event will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 11 am to 1 pm. Members of the Green Sanctuary & Social Justice Committees of the Unitarian/Universalist congregation, as well as the Laconia/Gilford Lions, will be curbside at the little white church at 172 Pleasant St. to collect soft plastics & #6 styrofoam for recycling.

No hard or ‘crunchy’ plastics or pet food bags are acceptable. Try the following tests to see if your plastics can be dropped off: 1) See if the plastic will stretch when pulled. If yes, it can be included. If it tears or rips like paper, no. 2) Is the plastic shiny or does

it make a crinkly, crunchy sound when crumpled? If yes, it is not acceptable for this program. No hard plastics can be accepted.

Only hard styrofoam products bearing a “#6” symbol may be accepted.

Please keep plastics & styrofoam separate. All plastics & styrofoam must be clean, dry, and free of labels. There is no charge or fee to drop off these items. Winnipesaukee Playhouse Presents Neil Simon’s Beloved Comedy The Winnipesaukee Playhouse’s professional summer season continues with the ultimate buddy comedy, Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. The play made its Broadway debut in 1965 before launching the popular film and television spinoffs. It follows the relationship between the neurotic, neatfreak Felix Unger and his slovenly friend and roommate, Oscar Madison.

The Playhouse’s production was chosen to showcase the talents of actors Robert Hooghkirk and Cory Lawson, and, according to patron and company services director, Lesley Pankhurst, it’s “the rare case when we choose a play specifically for the actors involved. In just four seasons, Robert has become a firm audience favorite, and one of our most prolific actors.
