hen you first glimpse the stained-glass work of Louis Michael Pulzetti, your breath will catch and you will exclaim at the beauty of the restrained colors and the lines and the graceful style. You needn’t be an experienced artist or decorator to know this is the work of a master who has spent years to hone his craft. But skilled workmanship and creativity are just part of the secret to the stained glass created by Louis.

Although a skilled artisan in the area of creating unique stained-glass pieces from lampshades to floor-to-ceiling doors and windows in original designs, Louis is modest about his work. “I have made a lot of mistakes along the way, and I learned from them,” he says with a laugh. Seated in his studio in Alton Bay, New Hampshire, Louis is eager to talk about stained glass and the path that led him to become a respected artisan.

“I got interested in stained glass when I was in my 20s,” he explains. “My career was in engineering and I lived in Massachusetts most of my life. I did a lot of reading about stained glass and that was very educational.

“Glass,” he goes on to say, “is an interesting medium. You work on a flat, opaque surface and you never really get the full impact of its beauty until you lift it up to the light.”

Reading helped to educate Louis about stained glass. Obviously, his career as an engineer helped him with the technical part of how to work with stained glass.

He observed a lot and started to practice making pieces. And, in 2009, a mentor offered further encouragement. “I went to his shop to buy glass and saw his stained-glass work,” Louis says. “He had the spirit of wanting to help

other artists and to share what he knew. He taught me a lot.”

Earlier in his life, with a family to raise and a busy career as an engineer, Louis didn’t have much time for stained glass projects, but rather saw making stained glass as a “diversionary hobby.” In 2008, during the recession, he found himself laid off from his job and that was the impetus Louis needed to begin making stained-glass pieces in earnest.

He explains, “I decided to form a company, Emmet’s Hill Wood & Glass LLC, because doing so legitimatized it for me. In my mind, it meant I was serious and this wasn’t just a ‘hobby’ any longer.”

Relocating to Alton Bay in 2012, Louis moved into high gear as a stainedglass artist. His studio on Route 11D is surrounded by the woods and offers everything he could wish for: the country life with solitude and quiet to work on stained-glass commissions and original pieces that require concentration.

The natural world plays heavily in the stained-glass designs and colors that clients find so appealing in Louis’ work. “The roots of my work go back to England’s Arts and Crafts movement in the late 1800s. At that time, industrialization swept England and the factory assembly lines were dehumanizing people. A counter culture sprang up that emphasized taking your time, making one piece at a time, and a pride in workmanship.”

The Arts and Crafts movement came to America as well, and Louis says two brothers – Charles and Henry Greene - began to build beautiful homes in California. Their style focused on careful craftsmanship, attention to detail, and gentle curving designs in the architecture. Louis came across the work of the Greene brothers and fell in love with their work.

“My work evolved over time,” he adds. “When I moved to my Alton Bay property, the studio space was unfinished but it was perfect for my needs.”

Now finished, the studio is a large, airy room with views of Louis’ flower gardens and the woods. Each section of the room is utilized for the various steps involved in creating stained glass (Louis does every portion of a piece, from the glass to the wood and metal structural and accent aspects). It gives the necessary elbow room and one can easily imagine working in the studio during a winter snowstorm or a sunny summer day. Louis says each season brings its own special appeal and he is not someone to pack up and head to a warmer climate come the first snow fall.

“I love the complexity of making stained glass and I love the challenge. One of the things I am experimenting with right now is double layer stained glass. It is a different kind of challenge. It is not easy to create and can be exciting…but it requires skill and practice because if not done correctly, it can look just awful; when done right, it can be beautiful.”

worked with Louis to pick out stained glass colors and textures.

“At that point, I did a study panel, which was a smaller version of what the finished stained glass would look like,” Louis explains. He moves to a large floor-to-ceiling wall of his studio where life-sized drawings of the stainedglass entryway show the scale and work involved. He also holds up the study panel; one can see the attention to detail, how a magnolia looks when in bloom and how the flowers grow in nature, and also where the shadows of the flower petals fall and create light and dark in the panel. Like all his work, the stained-glass study is a work of art in itself.

Copper foil outlines each vine and flower and is an integral part of the design. “Just the fabrication alone took about 400 hours and the designs and drawings took another two weeks,” Louis says.

But it is the collaboration and revision that is part of the artistic process for Louis and it is clear he greatly enjoys the people who commission stained glass work. The time involved and revising his design does not bother Louis, and the patience and willingness to do the work right harken back to the Arts and Crafts movement that greatly influences his work.

The finished entryway is a thing of art and ended up in a photograph on the cover of Arts and Crafts Homes magazine. Louis laughs when he says he was aware he would be mentioned in an article in the magazine, but he never dreamed his stained glass would end up on the cover. “I pulled the magazine out of my mailbox and when I saw the cover, I was so excited and surprised, I dropped the rest of my mail on the driveway!”

Last February, Louis joined the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and his work is for sale in the Meredith and Concord shops. He speaks highly of the shop managers, who he says have been supportive of his work. Nancy Rowley invited Louis to give a demonstration at the Meredith shop in early September, and he looks forward to such opportunities to meet the public and other artists.

“I joined the League as a way to reach out to others and for the social aspect of it. Of course, displaying and selling my work is part of it too. I was

in the Living With Craft exhibit at the Craftsman’s Fair at Sunapee this summer and that was a wonderful opportunity.”

Louis sees his League membership as a chance to get out of the studio and meet other artists. He was part of a panel discussion a few months ago and has volunteered to help with fundraising, as well as being on a League committee that installs exhibits in the Concord League’s gallery.

“My family and friends are very supportive,” he says, “but I also need the input from fellow artists,” he adds.

Currently Louis is working on a commissioned china cabinet stained glass piece with an organic design. And he will be working on more multi-layered pieces in the future, as well as doing more volunteering at the League.

“Although it sounds trite, I try to maintain a good work/life balance. I am working with a client in Virginia right now and we are in the talking stages for a stained-glass entryway.

“I hope to continue to learn all I can about stained glass. It may seem a bit off topic, but it is really pertinent to a discussion of how I create my work: I am from an Italian family. My grandparents lived with us and worked very hard. They were always busy, always doing something, but they didn’t complain about it. They never seemed to hurry and they were serene people.

They took time and enjoyed the work they did. I want to be like that.”

Perhaps Louis has found the key to living that is reflected in the beautiful stained glass he creates. Whether crafting a large entryway, a single window, a lampshade or other object, Louis isn’t in a hurry. He enjoys the process, creating objects that glow with color and light and bring pleasure to those fortunate enough to see his work. That indeed is the secret in the stained glass.

Oriental Rugs: Always Returning in Style

O

nce, when I was very young, I remarked to a friend that I was surprised a well-bred lady I knew had well-worn Oriental rugs throughout her house.

“Was she rich?” my friend asked.

“I think so,” I replied. “She was surrounded by lovely things.”

“Well, that explains it,” said my friend. “Rich people always have threadbare carpets on their floor. It’s a sign that they’re rich.”

I’m not sure I believed it at the time, but I have checked her theory through the years, and it seems to hold up. For some people, an Oriental rug that looks too new is déclassé and rugs with wear au courant. And it couldn’t be truer this fall. With trends taking on names like the “New Victorian” and continued interest in “green” living, it’s no wonder the venerable Oriental is being seen on decorating blogs, on the cover of magazines, and in homes of people you know.

What exactly is an “Oriental” rug? According to dictionary.com, an Oriental is “a rug or carpet woven usually in Asia and characterized by hand-knotted pile.” Sometimes the term is used interchangeably—and inaccurately—with “Persian” rug, defined as “a handwoven carpet or rug produced in Iran and characterized by fine warp and filling yarns, a usually tight, even pile made with the Sehnaknot, and a variety of floral, foliate, animal and avian designs woven in rich, harmonious colors.” For most amateur decorators, though, the inaccuracy is not of much concern, and they’re satisfied with the sense that Orientals or Persians are rugs handwoven of natural materials in Asia, and the sure knowledge that a well-crafted Oriental will wear well, and is unlikely to ever go completely out of style.

In addition, with yarns made out of wool, cotton or silk, they are naturally long-wearing, water-resistant if wool, and for many, being made of natural materials is a real bonus in our environmentally conscious world.

This year’s trends see Orientals taking new life in unusual settings.

Decorating outlets are gaga over small throw rugs used as bath mats (naturally water resistant) and in kitchens where their sometimes-deep pile can help support tired legs on hard surfaces.

Often vari-colored, Orientals are forgiving when used in areas where spills occur, such as dining rooms. Although regular cleaning is always rec-

ommended, a few crumbs on a well-designed Oriental are unlikely to be seen, and even dark-colored liquids can often be hidden by all the other activity of a Persian-like pattern. Again, the natural water-resistance of natural materials will wick the liquid to the surface of the rug making clean-up a relative breeze.

This fall, home stylists have declared themselves done with boring neutrals and passive whites. Instead, they’re loving rich jewel tones and unexpected pops of color. Orientals and Persian carpets often swarm with color, and today’s color freedom is license to pull out an unusual shade from the rug to put on the walls. Look carefully; these rugs often have surprising little “gifts” of turquoise or orange, plum or magenta. Take one and riff on it throughout the room. A little shy to swath a wall in bold? Then use it as an accent in a lampshade, couch throw, or picture frame.

Here in the Lakes Region, we are lucky to have many sources for Orientals.

For many, the “go to” is Little River Oriental Rugs (formerly David Levine Oriental Rugs) in Concord. Owned by father Gerry Carrier and daughter Tressa Kosowicz, they have hundreds of new Orientals, hand-knotted, handdyed rugs in stock from Afghanistan, Tibet and a small stock from India, and they add to their collection monthly. A socially-responsible company, they specialize in new wool rugs, hand-knotted and vegetable-dyed. Many are woven by refugee weavers. Wise buyers know that such rugs wear for decades, even centuries, so they often accept the Little River offer to “Try before you buy,” taking the rug home and cohabitating with it for a up to three days before committing to a lifelong arrangement. Orientals are so long-lived that it’s not uncommon for them to be handed down from generation to generation. Historical documents show rugs being willed from hand to hand in New England even back in Colonial times!

Little River isn’t only about new rugs, though. They also offer full-immersion handwashing and repair. Orientals are eminently forgiving in appearance when it comes to dirt, but it’s important to clean them regularly to ensure their longevity. Grains of sand and traces of winter salt can wreak havoc

on those hand-tied fibers at the foundation of your rug, and the chemical trail left by spills and food eat away at yarns and dyes over time. Clean regularly, generally every three to five years, to prevent premature aging.

However, when your rug needs a facelift—and what aging beauty couldn’t profit from one?—Little River has you covered there, too. Rugs walked on regularly will eventually show wear trails and fringe can weaken. Little River’s repair experts can rewrap sides, stabilize fringe, patch holes and damaged areas, and repair moth damage. Rugs can even be resized.

Concerned about the environment? True Oriental rugs are considered sustainable because of the materials used: hand-carded and handspun wools colored by vegetable dyes. Little River also offers sustainable rug pads made of natural rubber and jute or felt pads made from recycled textiles.

So if a new Oriental is not in your budget, where can you find carpets to get in on the trend? Many Baby Boomers are starting to downsize, and their prized rugs are showing up in antiques shops, second hand stores, and online on Craig’s List and Facebook Marketplace. You probably will first be attracted to a carpet by its design, color scheme, and whether it fits your budget. If it’s a little worn in areas, or just too 1990s, some do-it-yourselfers tout overdying as a way to bring new life to old rugs. Essentially, it’s like dying a very large head of dark hair. First chemicals are used to strip color from the old rug, and then a single (usually bold) color is laid over the rug with the old dyed design taking new form with fresh highlights. The Internet shows amazing results, but be aware it is a painstaking, labor- and time-intensive effort and should not be taken without proper preparation, especially because harsh, potentially harmful chemicals are used.

But think of my conversation with my friend so many years ago: If the price for the rug is right and it’s made of natural fibers, why worry about imperfections? A little shabby is a sign of taste when it comes to Oriental rugs.

A Place of Her Own: She Shed Retreat Story & Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper

I

t started with a suggestion from a friend, as she relaxed in Phyllis Tessier’s wood-shed-turned-seating-area in the spring of 2015. The spacious and well-kept yard of the Tessier’s home in Tuftonboro was the location of a graduation party for one of Phyllis’ son’s. The shed had been cleaned out and turned into a little sheltered area for guests to sit and socialize at the party.

Her friend loved the space and remarked that it should become a She Shed, a place that would be solely for Phyllis to sit, relax, read and get away from it all now and then.

Laughing as she remembers that comment, Phyllis says she had never heard the term She Shed, but she got thinking about the idea. Before it was a little retreat space for Phyllis, it had been a place where the family stored wood for their outdoor fire pit. Phyllis had always liked the little building, just a few steps from her home, but had never really thought of using it for anything except as a wood storage area, although she was aware the previous owner had used it as a gardening shed.

The shed seemed the perfect place for a little retreat with its view of the lawns and close proximity to the house in Tuftonboro. Phyllis’ husband, Paul, has worked to transform their property into a beautiful place with green lawns and landscaped areas amidst the towering trees. A stone wall borders the lawn, adding an old-fashioned grace to the land. It is quiet and peaceful, and just the place for a She Shed.

“I have since seen photos of She Sheds and they are certainly beautiful, elegant spaces,” Phyllis says. “Mine is more rustic, with wicker furniture, and the original bookcases the previous owner had installed.”

While some She Sheds have fancy doors, Phyllis says hers has an open front with no door; it is a three-sided space but it is sheltered from the elements and remains cool even in hot weather, due to its west-facing location.

The Tessiers used the shed for wood and lawn furniture storage, but Phyllis determined that it would be a great place for her little retreat and

but just right for Phyllis’ needs. The siding of the shed is cedar shakes and the roof matches that of the main home.

The interior walls are painted green, in keeping with its woodsy setting, and the natural wood floor is partially covered in a bright indoor/outdoor rug.

In the winter, the shed is covered in plastic to maintain the interior, but come spring, Phyllis eagerly marks off the days until she can once again step into her little oasis of relaxation.

The intimate shed is the female equivalent of the man cave, a place where a man might have a sofa, television and a place for a hobby such as woodworking. These retreats have been around in one form or another for years, with a variety of names from a den or home office to rec room located in the basement level of a home.

Now women are finding worth in a space of their own to relax and retreat from the pressures of day-to-day life.

Not much space is needed; a large, multi-roomed retreat would really defeat the purpose of a She Shed by making it a place that must be cleaned and maintained. Smaller, intimate spaces work much better.

Phyllis put down a weather resistant, colorful rug and arranged the wicker furniture in a pleasing layout. She points to a little table where she serves drinks and snacks when entertaining friends.

“My book club has met here and I sometimes entertain my friends here as well,” she says. “We aren’t on the lake and don’t have that advantage, so this is something I can use as a retreat from the phone, technology, laundry and cleaning. I don’t come out to the She Shed every day, but rather a few times a week in the summer. It is a space where I can remove myself from daily living. Because She Sheds are gaining in popularity, Lowe’s, a national home supply store, has now devoted a portion of its website to She Sheds. At www.lowes.com, the company explains, “Here’s a new way to get away from it all – right in your own backyard. It’s called a She Shed. It’s actually a regular storage shed with lots of style added.” The company created four spaces for different tastes and needs: a home office, reading nook, yoga studio and an artist’s work area. Step-by-step instructions aid in creating a She Shed retreat.

First, determine where the shed will be located if you are building a new structure. How close to your home do you wish to be? Find a level area in your yard, then order a kit or use a prefabricated tool shed. Be aware that you will want lots of light, perhaps doors that close and lock, insulation, maybe electricity, paint for the walls, and some sort of bookcases for your books and magazines. Plants or a window box full of flowers add color as well.

Phyllis says her She Shed is important, but she clearly is easy going about the space and isn’t overly concerned with making it an elegant place.

Rather, it is a retreat where she can get away from her busy everyday life and sit in peace and quiet and read or relax.

As a paraprofessional in the student support center at the Tuftonboro Central School, and with three sons and a husband with a busy career, Phyllis says she loves to have a special place to sit and entertain friends without the phone ringing or any interruptions.

Laughing, she adds that “The men know to stay out!” of the She Shed.

“It is my secret oasis and a way to get away from every day cares and concerns.”

Although she probably didn’t know she was in the forefront of a national She Shed trend, Phyllis identified the need for a private place to rest and relax quite some time ago. Perhaps every woman, in the busy world in which we live, could use a She Shed!

Philip says there’s a new offering of a “suede” finish in the quartz that has seen strong interest. “This finish gives the countertop a softer, less polished look, which seems to fit with the casual lifestyle of the Lakes Region and second homes,” Philip adds. “Quartz offers a maintenance-free material that customers are looking for.”

Where Lake and Mountains Meet

S

ometimes Paradise just happens. Sometimes it’s planned to the Nth degree. In the case of Ethan and Brandy Hugo’s new home on Ossipee Lake, Paradise was born from a combination of both.

When you first turn on to the residential road off Route 25, you sense you’re returning to an era when long summer vacations meant chock-full station wagons and transistor radios on the dock, firefly-filled evenings by the fire and neighbors running over for a just-perked cup of coffee. Folks walk on the side of the road and wave as you go by. When you park your car and see the broad water view from the Hugos’ lakeside lawn, you aren’t surprised when they say they decided to buy the property after spending less than 15 minutes onsite. “It just felt like the ideal location,” says Ethan.

The Hugos are longtime residents of Boston’s South Shore. They lead lives busy with careers and the raising of their 10-year-old daughter Madison, so the question naturally comes. How did they decide Ossipee, NH was the place to build their dream home? The couple laughs a little, and Brandy picks up the conversation.

The two knew they wanted a second home...someday, but they weren’t really focused on the search. When they vacationed on the Cape, they looked at what was there. When they visited the Berkshires, they glanced at listings, too. Brandy added herself to online real estate sites and enjoyed scrolling through highlights in the evening. One night something took her eye, and she announced to Ethan that she was going to meet a realtor to see a house in

Ossipee, NH. “Oh?” he said. “Yes,” she said and off she went.

Driving north on Route 16, she remembers cresting the hill by Won Tons restaurant and seeing the panorama of Mount Chocorua and the White Mountains open before her. “Oh boy!” Her pulse quickened a little. She met the realtor and visited a quaint little house on an Ossipee Lake peninsula, its location promising bright sunrise on one side of the land and warm sunset on the other. Entranced, she returned home only to bring Ethan and Madison up for a look soon after.

Once at the lake again, the whole family was charmed by the cottage’s location: a pristine lake (sixth largest in the state), a quiet neighborhood, and a reasonable travel time from their Massachusetts home and the mountains where they love to ski—after all, they anticipated that this second home would get four-season use. They started thinking ahead. How could the current house be modified to meet the needs of their family and the many guests they would invite? How could they incorporate some leisure luxuries they dreamed about? What would happen if they added a wing, or expanded the footprint? As they spoke to the real estate agent, their spirits slowly damp-

ened. It turned out that the ideal location that attracted them could also be a thorn. The property was too close to the water and too small a size to accommodate the expansion plans that they desired for the home.

Undaunted, and hearing their dreams unfurl, the realtor suggested they look at another property nearby, and introduced them to a lot at the head of a bay occupied by a 1950’s-era split-level house placed close to the road.

Opening behind it was nearly two acres of land, with an unobstructed view to the lake and a white sand beach. Properties to the right and left are heavily wooded. They found out later that the place had been cleared by Mother Nature. A micro-burst had run through the property just a few years before.

Ethan picks up the tale. “We spent 15 minutes at the property—two minutes inside the house and left.” Knowing they had found exactly what they wanted, they didn’t visit the site again until they owned it and were there to meet with Mark Diamond of Clean Cut Construction to start planning their forever home.

From the outset, building the house felt like a collaboration, Ethan says.

“everybody is accommodating and nice here.” Their introduction to Mark came from area building professionals and while at first, they were a little wary of the company’s tagline, “Your Dream. Built Right,” they soon found it was not just aspirational.

When clients first meet with Mark, they are often taken aback by his youthful appearance. A lifelong resident of the area and graduate of Kingswood Regional High School, he started building with local contractors in his teens.

By the time he was in his mid-20s, he knew that in order to do the kind of quality building he would expect in his own house, he needed to strike out on his own. Assembling a small workforce of trusted craftsmen and forging trusting relationships with quality local contractors, he has now built more than four dozen area homes. The Hugo project came at a time when his building experience, project management skills, and local cultural knowledge were sharp and ready for a new challenge.

In their first meeting, Ethan and Brandy walked the property with Mark and talked about what they envisioned in their home: private areas for the family, and public areas for the extended family and friends they wish to

entertain; windows full of natural light and that wonderful view; a first floor master suite—after all, they expect to retire here; a very special bedroom for Madison that is age-appropriate now and will grow with her through her teens; office space for Ethan where he can focus but not feel shunted away from the family; a work-out room so they can maintain fitness even though gym facilities are limited in the area; comfortable outdoor amenities that can be used throughout the seasons.

All involved agreed that the house already on the property had outlived its usefulness and needed to be removed, so while Mark’s crew got started with that, the Hugos and Mark continued to talk and sketch.

Initially, Ethan thought their house would be in the range of 3,000 square feet, a fairly traditional—perhaps Craftsman—style that would rise two stories from the street. Because the land sloped toward the lake, there would be a full walk-out basement to store the inevitable stuff that is part and parcel of an active lifestyle.

Mark listened carefully and then surprised the Hugos by asking to visit them in their Massachusetts home, three hours away. Ethan says, “Mark re-

ally made such an effort to understand us. He studied us. Part of his process [of planning the house] was figuring out what we like and what our taste is.

“We built an element of trust from early on, saying, ‘hey, we’re working together.’ That trust proved worthy. It’s a unique relationship when one person is technically working for the other.”

An early moment when that trust was tested was when Mark advised they change their plan from a two-story house with walk-out basement to a onestory house with finished living space below. While the Hugos had not spent much time on Lake Ossipee, Mark knew that a two-story house with cathedral ceilings would be painfully out of place on a shoreline where ranches, cottages and modest homes prevail. Instead, he suggested they take advantage of the large lot and spread the living area horizontally. They completed plans and took them to the architect who ushered the group into the next level of trust. Wanting to give every room possible a view of the lake, the design echoed the shoreline in foundation angles. Ethan was a little cautious.

“I didn’t appreciate all the angles and having the different views from all the windows,” he says. So Ethan and Mark staked the foundation out and talked it over. Still not entirely convinced, Ethan decided to bank on the trust built between him and his builder, “I just sort of went with it and held my tongue.”

Mark interrupts here, sounding almost apologetic. “Ethan’s been extremely hands-on, even measuring things out with me. He wasn’t micro-managing.

It was more like, ‘Hey, let’s figure things out together.’”

After the architect’s plans were made, giving the builders guidance on the multiple roof systems and necessary engineering for nine gable ends, it was time for Mark and his clients to make sure the interior spaces reflected the life the Hugos expect to live for decades to come. Just as the exterior of the house fits the shoreline and sits comfortably before the mountains, Brandy says, they envisioned “who we would have with us here.” They created spaces by “how they will be used by the people...”

Not surprisingly, the interior of the finished house is somewhat larger than

what Ethan had originally planned. The square footage roughly doubled. The finished home now includes five bedrooms—the master is fireplaced, has a custom-designed walk-in closet, and deck overlooking the Lake; Madison’s room has arched alcoves with programmable lighting installed; and a third is outfitted with two sets of bunkbeds for friends with a whole passel of boys; five baths—master with both traditional and rain shower head in the shower and a chandeliered soaking tub; an open gathering space of fireplaced living/ kitchen/dining room with lake-facing deck; a sun parlor; work-out room; mudrooms, laundry and pantry; patio family room; and a bonus room over the attached garage. With the exception of the private spaces, each room flows from one to another, allowing ample room for entertaining, and always, through the large windows, one sees the glittering expanse of Ossipee Lake.

While Ethan and Mark’s focus was on the overall plan for the house, Brandy’s forte is styling. Recognizing that the family fell in love with their new property for both the lake and the surrounding wooded mountains, she picked soft, natural tones for paint and has married the clarity of the lake with the more rustic textures of the land in every room of the house. In the vast open living room, large windows offering bright sweeping views are tempered by dark-stained floors and built-ins—topped by clear glass cupboards above the wet bar. Living spaces in the walk-out basement retain cement floors acid-washed in light granite tones trimmed by custom-made 5/4 plenum-topped baseboards and two breathtakingly crafted columns.

The columns are the favorite part of the house for Mike Kelley, Mark’s foreman and friend for many years, and they represent not only the trust built between the Hugos and Mark, but also between Mark and the craftsmen he chooses for his team.

There was never a doubt who owned the Hugos’ project, but because Mark takes certain pride in ensuring that any of his projects is a complete organic whole, he often gives clients “extras” they had not anticipated. Gazing at the patio-facing family room one day, he realized that it needed an additional

element to mark the boundary between public space and private sleeping quarters. Already, everyone was calling the family room a “chill” space, its built-ins echoed the dark wood from the upstairs living room, and its large overstuffed sofa system just cried out “Sink here. Chillax!,” so Mark knew the element needed to ease the flow from it to the more refined space of bedrooms and baths on the other side. And the best solution? Two carved posts, Mark decided, painted white to note the transition.

Had the Hugos asked for posts? Did they sign off on a design? Were posts in the budget? Would Mark even charge the Hugos for them? No. No. No. And no, but by this time in the project, Mark and they had built trust enough, that he was comfortable making a decision that would surprise and probably please them—and besides, they could always be torn out if the Hugos were unhappy with the result.

Mark turned to Mike, a third-generation master carpenter, and gave him only two directions for the posts: make the base bigger than the top and include some kind of fluting. Did Mark want a preliminary drawing or expect to sign off when Mike was partway done? No. He trusted Mike and knew he and Mike hold the same philosophy, “We like our houses to look gorgeous in the end.”

The completed architectural columns succeed in gracefully dividing one space from the other. They are perfectly proportioned to the space and beautifully fluted, but it’s the details that Mike is most proud of as he points to his artful marriage of two adjacent sections of detailed crown molding, one stained, one painted.

Outside the house, the landscape continues to carry the theme of rustic and refined side by side. The stone patio and natural granite columns supporting the Zuri-composite deck look comfortably natural, belying the precision of cutting and placing by contractors, some working in the snows of winter to keep the project moving. A firepit on the lawn is served by audio speakers camouflaged, and placed with such accuracy that only the Hugos and their guests will hear their music. To protect bathers in the Jacuzzi from strong breezes lakeside, cedar screens have been custom made with windows to protect them and their view.

Ethan jokes that although they see this house as their retirement house, after building it so exactingly, retirement is “probably going to be much longer away now,” so they have included many features to make it feel immediately like home when they arrive for weekend and vacation jaunts. Beyond including the most up-to-date energy efficiencies and protections for long spans of time when they cannot be at the house, they have also included broad Smart House technologies that allow them to monitor and control the home from anywhere. They can talk to the house, and the house can talk to them through installed alarms, and motion, glass break and temperature sensors.

Brandy takes a minute to reflect, “Mark’s been such a pleasure to work with. It’s just gone so smoothly. And his guys are all always friendly, considerate and respectful.” She reiterates, “Top to bottom, start to finish, always so pleasant and really respectful. Ethan and I…both feel so incredibly blessed…what this was for us was literally our dream. ”

As the old saying goes, things aren’t important, but people are. That phrase could be the philosophy of Cindie Graham, owner of Help! With Everyday Things LLC. She has been a clutter control expert for years, and has now branched out to offer a variety of services for those who are timestrapped, or moving, and may be confused about how to organize their day-

maybe you have been saving paper or craft items thinking you will someday do a project, but if it’s been months or years and you have not done the project, chances are you won’t. You are holding onto things that are virtually useless.)

People are more productive when they are in a less visually cluttered space, not to mention the time they have with less things to clean and care for.

“People need to find solutions and everyone’s mind works differently,” Cindie goes on to say. Start by figuring out how and where to keep things and come up with a system that will work for you. “When I work with people and we make a system, if they find it doesn’t make sense and isn’t working for them, we revise it.”

Over the years, Cindie has often worked with widows, as well as middleage to early-retirement age people. At that time, many people are downsizing and selling their home and moving.

These all come with the need to organize…and the ability to declutter and move on. “It isn’t easy for many people,” Cindie says. “I also help people by staging their homes when they are putting the place on the market.”

An expert at staging, Cindie can do a walk-through and see and smell things in a home the owner might be unaware of because they live in the rooms every day. She also will help people pack and unpack and organize their new living spaces. Part of that is writing up a plan and using her skills to make the new living space work for a client.

Laughing, Cindie says, “I can be easily distracted, but I am OCD enough to need to finish a task! I stay focused, but when working on organizing with a client, we never work more than three hours at a time, because it is physically demanding. It is also emotional for people – especially when going through sentimental belongings.”

The notion of hiring someone to help you get organized and decluttered might seem unnecessary when a friend or family member could step in, but when you are hiring someone, the task becomes more serious and tends to get done faster and in a more productive way.

Once the task is completed, Cindie says clients tell her they find they have more time for people and that they feel it is freeing. People tend to fall into two categories: either they are willing to downsize and reorganize and let go of things or they become isolated, clinging to possessions vs. people.

That can lead to someone becoming a prisoner in their own home, surrounded by things that sometimes can take on a life of their own. But, says Cindie, inanitmate objects are just things and can’t love you back the way a family member can.

If a person who is moving wants to see their prized possessions offered to friends and family before downsizing, Cindie suggests throwing a big party.

Ask loved ones to put a sticker on things they want with their name on it. At the gathering, everyone will be told that they must have the things they want moved out by a certain date or it will be donated elsewhere.

Cindie says the new generation of young people aren’t as quick to hold onto things as older generations, and this may be due to the many decluttering and downsizing television shows around today. Shows such as Fixer Upper feature less cluttered interiors, with clean spaces. And the tiny house movement has shown a whole new generation that they can and might want to consider living with less in a smaller home.

“Don’t be offened if you offer your antiques and collectibles to your children and grandchildren and they decline the offer. You need to realize that tastes and styles change,” Cindie says.

A recent – and rather sudden – move for Cindie and Michael meant they had to downsize in a hurry. “In previous moves we had more time to downsize and also for me to stage the home we were selling. But not this time!”

Because a house they had always had their eyes on became available, they had to move fast to put their home on the market, stage it so that it looked its most appealing and to move when it sold rather quickly.

“It was a sudden move, and in order to make sure our home looked the best, I walked through the rooms, and noted where paint had to be touched up, for example.

“There wasn’t as much time for packing,” she adds. This hurried process

was made much easier by the many moves the couple has undertaken over the years and the fact that Cindie is organized and lives a clutter-free life.

“As much as possible, I like to know where everything is. My suggestion for others facing a move is to pack up the things you don’t use every day, such as fine china,” she adds. Keep out and pack last the things you use often and clothes you know you will need so you can access them first once you are settled in your new living space.

Keep select pieces out for staging your home while it is for sale. Little things, like making sure there is a clear line of sight and no boxes are left around are huge.

You want prospective buyers to see how you live in the house and how comfortable it is; you do not want them to see your packing boxes or any clutter.

“You want your house to smell clean and fresh. You can even achieve this by having a vanilla scented candle burning; it can mask any cooking smells you might be unaware of. Keep your pets out of the house when there is a showing and make sure dusting and vacuuming is done. Cleanliness,” Cindie says, “is huge when you are showing the house.”

It is also important for your comfort and day-to-day living. Spring and fall cleaning means deep cleaning, such as taking curtains down and washing them and cleaning carpets.

Finally, for your own purposes and when selling a house, try to have just one use for a room, such as a home office. If it doubles as a guest room, a craft room or any other purpose, it becomes cluttered and confusing.

With a recent move still fresh in her mind, Cindie has found controlling

the clutter in her own home to be vital to a stress-free move. Her business has branched out to encompass other home services, such as transporting elderly clients to appointments, grocery shopping, and meal planning and cooking.

She even has a client who loves to decorate for Christmas but, due to mobility issues, could not do so. Cindie did the decorating and after the holidays, boxes and labeled all the decorations. Laughing again, she says, “I guess I am a sort of concierge service!”

How did she reach the point in life where she knows what she wants to do and can reach those goals? “I worked in a fast-paced office and then, took a year off to babysit my grandson. I found I liked the freedom and knew I wanted to do something besides office work or just clutter control.”

She took a course by Emily Clement, called Dream Builders. It was very helpful to target Cindie’s goals and hone in on what she wanted to do. “I realized I don’t want to work full time, because I am busy with other things as well. I identified that I want to work 10 am to 3 pm, and I want to work for kind people that are appreciative. People who know I will do a good job. I am a good cook and I wanted to bring that into my job as well.”

All those moves, all those life experiences have helped shape the way Cindie lives today. She knows that people are more important than things.

Her work life is varied and satisfying. And her clients are happier and healthier for having Cindie in their lives.

Local Artist Returns to Roots; Ends up Turning Them

A

fter a 35-year career in the stock market, Nicholas Moore traded the urban chaos and fast-lane aesthetics of the investment world for New Hampshire’s endless vistas and natural beauty. Having spent childhood summers in Sandwich, Moore was called homeward to reunite with crisp mountain air, the call of loons, echoing eerily into the night from across the lake, and the finest wood a craftsman could hope for. For the past two years Moore has been practicing his passion, crafting wooden bowls through a process called “turning.” The technique involves imbedding a wooden starter block to a machine called a lathe, which rotates at speeds over 1,000 revolutions per minutes, and shaving away excess material to shape the finished project, with specialized tools.

While operating from his at-home studio, situated in a utility room at his lake house on Winnipesaukee, Nicholas Moore has created splendorous works of art from local wood, delivered to him from Lovering Tree Care Services. Take one look at one of his signature (in a literal sense, every item he creates is autographed lovingly with a branded arrow, a tradition Moore keeps after attempting to brand his name, and failing to do so) Cherry salt bowls, and it’s plain to see the dedicated, passionate nature by which he operates. With every minor detail carefully accounted for, pride in one’s work is found satisfyingly in the form of a craft worthy of being displayed. As part of the Tuftonboro Free Library’s efforts to showcase local artistry, Moore’s wooden bowls were featured as July’s “Artist of the Month” spotlight. This recognition came equipped with a month-long exhibit within the Tuftonboro Free Library, dedicated to his work. By all means, this can be considered the form of appreciation expected when something is made through passion, and perfected with patience. As Moore stands at his lathe, explaining step by step the fine points of technique while turning a cut-out slice of local Cherry wood, an overwhelming, as well as deeply inspirational sense of dedication, can be seen in the results.

As beautiful as the works of Nicholas Moore may be, one may be shocked to learn the time frame he’s had to perfect his craft: A mere two years. To

physically see Moore’s work is to understand why this may be shocking; however the circumstances turn out to make perfect sense. To begin with, the origin of Nicholas Moore’s contribution to the world of wood turning is set in St. John, an island of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he met renowned master wood turner Avelino Samuel. Moore crafted his first bowl at age 13, but drifted away from the craft for years until this meeting. Samuel would become a mentor of sorts for Moore, providing him with 200 hours of personal training. “I learned from the best.

Avelino Samuel taught me to make the art I want to make, and simply do what I like,” says Moore of his training. “What I like to do is lay a fresh cut of wood onto my lathe, chip away the excess, and let the wood tell you what it wants to do.” Samuel has provided Moore with the tools for success, gifting him with various handmade equipment, as well as an understanding of the art form in itself, of crafting genuine works of art.

With Nicholas Moore, you clearly see where the motivation lies. It’s all about the passion, not the profit. Woods such as Eucalyptus and the Manzanita root, a breathtaking complication of roots, naturally tinted to an intense shade of dark red. “The misshapen, tangled bunch of roots makes an interesting challenge for wood turning, and really can create some spectacular pieces,” says Moore. Moore plans to continue his brand of dedication to craft, and operate with a focus on doing what he loves, versus a focus on the lucrative aspect of his work. Nicholas Moore does what he loves, where he loves. Pining for pine!

W

hen it comes to choosing flooring material for your home or work space, the options are bountiful. Shall it be carpeting, engineered wood, laminate, stone, porcelain, good ole linoleum, or perhaps one of a dizzying array of natural wood products? For many, solid hardwoods – domestic or Brazilian oak, maple, pecan, cherry, ash, hickory and more – are favored for their warmth and durability. Flip through the latest edition of any home design magazine and you’re likely to see floors awash in high-end hardwoods. But solid hardwoods generally come with a hefty price tag starting at least in the mid-$3 to $4 range, according to one national suppliers’ website that lists 68 varieties of solid hardwood alone.

An often overlooked but affordable and attractive flooring option is pine.

Eastern White Pine is plentiful in New England – just look outdoors – and more sustainable than oak since pine grows faster. One of the largest suppliers of Eastern White Pine is located right here in the Lakes Region. LaValleyMiddleton Building Supply [lavalleys.com] and its enormous mill, DiPrizio Pine Sales, Inc., outputs 19 million feet of pine lumber a year. The mill’s finishing center processes kiln dried lumber for flooring, timbers, siding, paneling and molding in a wide variety of lengths and to custom specifications. But by far, the majority of the lumber is sold for interior uses such as flooring, paneling and shelving, said Scott Brown, the company’s vice president of sales and marketing who has worked for the company for 20 years.

Pine 101 Its pine flooring products come in a variety of sizes from one-inch thickness starting from four foot to 12 foot lengths, and in a variety of installation cuts, i.e. tongue-in-groove, shiplap or even straight boards. Standards widths are 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches. The flooring comes in grades, the most popular of which are select grade – one with minimal knots, sometimes clear – and premium – a variety with red knots – a characteristic that occurs when a tree is cut down with live branches. The lowest grade would be ‘standard,’ with the larger knots. The square foot price per lineal foot for premium pine is budget friendly starting at under $1 a foot! An online

search of hardwood flooring prices went up to more than $12 per square foot for wider planks. Pine beaded paneling starts slightly higher at DiPrizio’s, at $1.05 per lineal foot.

Attractive, affordable choice Pine is an appealing material for several reasons. “Number one is its character – the beauty with the red knots. Each board has variations. It’s soft. It lends itself well to remanufacture – i.e., cutting. It won’t splinter and has very good workability. It sands and accepts stain very nicely,” he added. “It’s easy to work with.” Certainly, pine is a softer wood and will ding and dent given the right circumstances – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially for homeowners looking for that distressed look. Hardwood is longer lasting, Brown adds, but, hardwoods like oak typically grow five times slower than White Pine. Pine will have more character and a less uniform pattern. “You go into, say, a Pub with a pine floor and is it dinged up. Yup. Is it scratched?

Yup. But it still looks good,” he added. Pine is also popular in homes and businesses in the Lakes Region as it reflects our surroundings. At its LaValleyMiddleton Building supply store in Meredith, one of its 10 stores in New Hampshire and Vermont, high end pine is a top seller, he added.

As for trends, Brown credits the HGTV network show, “Fixer Upper,” hosted by Chip and Joanna Gaines, as having a huge impact on the popularity of shiplap pine as the hosts restore and refresh homes in Texas.

Installation and Sustainability Installation involves setting down a water-resistant barrier such as rosin paper, which also reduces squeakiness, or a homeowner can choose to lay it right over the plywood base. Planks should be tightly set before nailing in place – there is a shrinkage factor with pine when the humidity dips in winter, then expands again in the spring, said Brown.

“Even though it’s a cut product, it’s still a living species,” adds Brown, “so it will still give up and take in moisture in its cell structure.” Generally the tongue and grooved planks are nailed down diagonally– by hand or nail gun – rather than glued. Or, for an added rustic look, some homeowners choose

to nail planks from the top so the wrought iron nail heads are visible, he added. Another method is to screw the planks down and place an oak dowel on top of the recessed screw head, said Inside Sales Manager Greg Martin, who added, “It was labor intensive, but it turned out beautifully.” Once installed, the floors can be sealed with two to three coats of polyurethane, sanding between the first two coats. And that’s it for about six or seven years, added Brown, who used pine for both the exterior and interior of his home when it was built in 2005.

As for being “green” and sustainable, Eastern White Pine is grown fairly locally and harvested mostly from the New England states.

Coast, and they have just about the same durability, but it’s sustainable coming from here – you don’t have 4,000 miles of transportation costs,” added Brown. “Most of our logs come from a 100-mile radius,” said Brown. Greg Martin, the company’s inside sales manager at its Middleton store, said the use of pine exterior siding has become more popular given the depressed state of the cedar market out west due to wildfires or weather. A box of cedar shingles that used to sell for about $99 a box at the Big Box home improvement stores jumped to $160 box after this winter, added Martin.

Pine paneling is another popular product that can be used on part of or an entire wall – and ceiling. Martin used pine in his own home. He adds that most homeowners will opt to stain or seal the natural pine rather than paint it – but pine can be painted. Just use a high quality sealer so the knots and grain don’t bleed through.

At Home with Artist

argery Thomas-Mueller has dreamed of a life as a fine artist since she was a child. “This was the goal from about age five,” she says. After a decades-long interior design career in New York City, Margery now spends her days tucked away in an airy studio on the second floor of a beautiful red barn in Alton, NH. A creative collaboration between Margery, her husband, and a New York architect and friend, the space is home to both Margery’s art studio and her husband’s antique boats. Tall ceilings and walls allow Margery to spread out and work with her current medium, graphite and India ink on Yupo paper—a synthetic, plastic-like paper—on a large scale: many of her pieces hang at well over eight feet.

In late summer, I visit Margery in her studio one afternoon, as she is preparing for the opening of her solo show on August 26. Before we make our way to the gallery space, she takes me upstairs to her studio. The stairway is lined with sketches of faces tacked to the wall. One sketch a day, she tells me, just to exercise her creative muscle. She’s been adding to this particular bunch for over two years, about as long as she’s been working on the pieces that will be displayed in her show.

After a quick tour of her studio, Margery takes me down a grassy path to the gallery space: a barn-red building with great big garage doors. The walls inside are smooth and white, with gallery lighting ready to illuminate her work. Two local artists and friends, including Patricia Carega of the Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery, are there to help, and the three of them carefully lay out her work on the floor, before hanging them.

Some of the pieces are already hanging, and we pause so I can take them in. Most are monochromatic, though some have metallic tints that Margery hopes call to mind the illuminations in medieval religious books, and all are completely breathtaking. Trees limbs and branches are thickly intertwined, light peeking through in spots as the bright white of the bare paper.

In some of the pieces, familiar human figures are intertwined with the branches and brambles, pointing to the deep connection of humanity to the land. “[It’s] about life and the thicket of the landscape,” Margery says. She cites historical and contemporary examples of displaced people as inspiration for her pieces, stressing the instability they no doubt feel with the impermanence of the medium: with just a bit of ammonia and water, the ink can be removed and the paper wiped clean. The medium itself is a metaphor, and Margery says it’s “so different than anything else I’ve ever worked with.”

Margery’s been fascinated by land and our connection to it since she began as a fine artist. “The land has always been something to me,” she says, citing Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Mallay’s “Renascence” as one of her earliest sources of inspiration: As her final project in college, Margery did a series of etchings based on the poem. She recites pieces of it to me as she describes its influence on her work, emphasizing the mystical connection of humankind and the landscape that Mallay describes. The blending of human figures and bramble, Margery says, create an amorphous feeling of nature; “our limbs, the tree limbs” all intertwine to highlight the deep connection Mallay draws between nature and humanity.

This echo back to her beginnings as a fine artist wasn’t necessarily intentional. As she worked, Margery’s pieces evolved: “I make the basic structure and then all the detail [emerges].” Certainly, though, it’s an emotionally charged and intentional experience: “You’re focused [on the project] but you’re relying on your interior,” she says of the process of creating a piece of art.

This contrasts with her long and successful career as an interior designer in New York City. While both fine artistry and interior design require an innate creativity, Margery tells me that interior design requires a more scientific eye; it’s a discipline that works closely with architects. While she continued to pursue her interest in fine art, Margery made a clear distinction between her career and her artistry. It wasn’t until she closed her office in New York City in 2012 and moved to Alton, NH full-time that she was really able to direct

her full attention to her art.

Though she kept a clear separation between interior design and fine arts during her time in New York, in her home, just a short distance from her studio space, the two meld together seamlessly. A stone fireplace in the center of the living room is accented by a natural color palette and décor, and the walls are dotted with framed artwork. Margery tells me that she’s a collector of prints and rare books. She points out a few pieces by Leonard Baskin and Barry Moser, telling me that it wasn’t until after she’d begun collecting the two artists that she realized Moser had studied under Baskin for a time.

Nearby, one of her first pieces on Yupo paper hangs on her wall, experimentation in a new sort of paper and graphite that paid off.

Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city for a quiet home tucked into the trees surrounding Robert’s Cove was just what she needed, and, Margery says, she traded the excitement of the city for a new sort of creative stimulation. “Every night is different [on the lake]” her husband used to tell her, and she found that to be more than true. Both the city and the Lakes Region have “a lot of stimulation on different levels,” she says. Later, as we sit on pillowy chairs in the sunroom, the sunlight dancing on the waves of Winnipesaukee out the windows, I see exactly what she means.

As we sit overlooking the water, Margery begins to explain how it felt to see all of the pieces that she’d poured so much into over the past two years hanging in the gallery space earlier that evening. “[It’s] something I’ve never felt before,” she says, “[and] very powerful.” As she raised her family and built her career, Margery never lost sight of her art: “When there really isn’t a choice to give it up,” she says, “when that’s what you are,” the only option is to continue to pursue it.

By Chef Kelly Ross I would like to share some ideas for an awesome and fairly simple menu for the next time you want to WOW someone. Maybe it is for you and your partner for an anniversary dinner, or maybe you want to spoil someone on their special occasion. Regardless of the reason, these menus are sure to amaze the taste buds, widen the eyes, and make you look like a 5-star chef. Here are some ideas for you to enjoy.

Pan Seared Scallops with Bacon Crumbles Let’s started with the pan seared scallops. You don’t need too many ingredients and it’s pretty simple to prepare, but it is so good.

Fresh Scallops, ideally 20-30 in. size, which means there are 20-30 per pound.

(You are ultimately looking for them to be about the diameter of a quarter and about an inch high. You are better buying them too large than too small. Large scallops can be cut down if needed and if too small, they will become tough in the cooking process. As an appetizer, I would suggest 5-6 scallops per person.)

woodmansforgefireplace.com done a day or two in advance if needed. Once the bacon is cool, crumble it up as best as you can. It shouldn’t be pulverized to dust, but you do want small pieces. You can do it by hand or put the bacon in a plastic bag and pound with a meat tenderizer. How much bacon you crumble should be relative to how many scallops you are cooking, although you can always use leftover crumbled bacon on a burger, in a sandwich, an omelet or salad.

Next, at production time, you will need two pans. Ideally, you need a heavy iron skillet for the scallops and a small sauté pan for the bacon. If you have done the bacon a day or two in advance, make sure you pull the bacon and bacon grease to room temp a few hours in advance. In the small sauté pan, on a low heat, pop in the bacon crumbles. As it slightly warms up and loosens up, add a spoonful of the bacon grease. with butter sauce. Place the scallops on an appetizer plate and put a small spoonful of the bacon on top of the scallops and drizzle very lightly with the brown butter. If you like, garnish the top with chopped scallions and enjoy.

spray your grill with pan release and then pop the chicken skewers on. Flip them as needed until done. Once done, leave them skewered or depending on your guests, pull them off. At that point, drizzle the peanut sauce over them. The sauce is very tasty!

Chicken Satay with a Spicy Peanut Sauce Mandarin Spinach Salad This is one of my favorites, mainly because it calls for one my favorite sauces. Again, this recipe is very simple and so darn good. Here is what you will need.

5 oz. Chicken Breast per person Vegetable or olive oil 2 cloves minced garlic 2 tbsp fresh minced ginger 1 cup hot water 3/4 cup peanut butter The juice of one lemon 2 tbsp chili sauce……make your own or you can find in most any store 2 tbsp hoisin sauce…..also in most any supermarket 2 tbsp teriyaki sauce A pinch of red pepper flakes and a pinch of cayenne pepper Chopped scallions Cut the chicken in strips and skewer them. Lightly drizzle w/vegetable or olive oil. Set aside while doing the sauce. Light your grill.

Heat the oil in a pan over a medium heat and add the garlic and ginger.

Add the hot water, peanut butter, and lemon juice and stir until smooth. Stir the chili sauce, hoisin sauce, and teriyaki sauce into the mixture. Reduce the heat to low and add the peppers and let simmer for 5 minutes or so to thicken. If too thick, add a splash or two more of water.

This is a great Asian influenced salad that, if wanted, can make a great entrée by putting one of your favorite proteins over the top, such as a seasoned chicken breast, shrimp, scallops or steak tips. Here is what you will need for the basic salad.

ginger, sesame seeds and black pepper and mix well with a small wisk or a fork and set aside.

For the salad prep, snip the green beans and cut them into bite size pieces.

Dice the peppers into bite size pieces as well. The onion I dice a lot smaller than the peppers. Set them aside in separate bowls or containers. The pea pods can stay as they are or if you prefer, cut them in half. Depending on the size of the walnuts, feel free to put in a small ziplock and pound them lightly with a meat tenderizer. Drain the oranges.

Rinse the spinach. Make sure it is well drained. Put in a bowl with the pea pods, green beans, peppers and onions and lightly drizzle with the dressing and toss well so the dressing has lightly coated the mixture. With tongs, put some of the mix onto plates or salad bowls. Top the salads w/ the orange, walnuts and Craisins. Lightly drizzle a little more dressing over the top of each salad and top with the crunchy chow mien noodles and it’s ready to serve. It is a blend of flavors with some nice crunch from the veggies/ noodles combined with the sweetness of the oranges, Craisins and dressing works very well together.

Baked Stuffed Salmon Most salmon lovers want their salmon cooked on the grill or pouched or baked very simply and topped with a sauce. I came up with this one about 20 years ago in the restaurant where I was working at the time. It was on the menu as a nightly special and it became so popular it ended up on the menu and became one of our best sellers. For starters, you need to make a seafood stuffing. You can use whatever type of seafood you prefer, but I use crab meat, scallops and shrimp. If you make more stuffing than you need, it freezes very well. It is hard to make just enough stuffing for 2 pieces of salmon, which is why I mention that.

1 ½ sticks butter, maybe a little more 1 finely diced stick of celery 1/2 of a finely diced onion A couple pinches of fresh chopped Thyme Coarse black pepper 5-6 large scallops, cut each one into about 4-5 pieces 5-6 large raw shrimp, cut into 3-4 pieces 2 small cans crab meat 2 sleeves of Ritz crackers, crushed. is thin on the ends and thick in the middle. The pieces should be at least an inch high.

To make the stuffing, make sure everything is cut as mentioned in the ingredient list. Once everything is prepped, melt butter on a low-med heat and put in the onions, celery, shrimp, and scallops into the pan. Stir well and make sure not to burn the butter. Once about half way cooked or so, add the crabmeat, black pepper, and fresh thyme. Continue to stir and combine well and cook for a couple more minutes. Dump into a bowl. Add Ritz cracker crumbs, a little at a time and mix well. Ideally, this should be at a consistency in which you can take a handful and it holds together like a snowball. This should give you enough stuffing for at least 4 pieces of salmon.

Spray the pan well with a pan release spray. The salmon portions are shaped like a rectangle. With a sharp paring knife, slice the salmon from one of the short ends to the other short end, right down the middle of the filet. The cut should be about ¾ of the way down the filet. The piece needs to remain as one piece, but the cut should be deep enough to fill with the stuffing. Put as much stuffing as you prefer into each filet. There should be enough in the salmon so that the top of the salmon should be separated by an inch or so with the stuffing would be my suggestion. Now, combine your marmalade and juice. You want to thin out the marmalade just enough that it spreads nicely over the salmon. Place the stuffed salmon in your sprayed pan, baste the pieces with the orange mix, just on the meat, not the stuffing.

Grilled Beef Tenderloin Ah, beef tenderloin. To those who aren’t well versed in the meat world, beef tenderloin, to many, is the top of the beef food chain. To cook it in this form is expensive, but it is so incredible. Many know what a filet mignon is. The filet is cut from the beef tenderloin. To buy a whole tenderloin is a special feeling and could cost you between $70-100. It will need to be cleaned up, which doesn’t take long as far as prep time is concerned. A whole tenderloin will feed 6 people easily. If you only want to cook for 2 people, you can go to the butcher shop and ask for a cleaned-up tenderloin that weighs at least a pound or so. If you buy a filet mignon in the store, they generally weigh between 6-8 ounces. What you want is a hunk that you cook on its side and roll it, as opposed to cooking a filet on the flat side and torn over. The amount of people you are serving will dictate whether you buy the whole tenderloin or a smaller version. I will walk you through how to clean up a whole tenderloin if that’s the way you want to go.

If you buy the whole tenderloin, here is what you have to do. (It’s much easier than you may think.) The tenderloin is very fat at one end and tapers to being thin at the other end. You will notice that there is a separation of sorts running down the tenderloin. Put your fingers into it. This will separate the actual tenderloin from what is often called the tail or train. There is a line of fat in the seam of the fat end and a silver skin throughout. With a sharp knife, start at the thin end in that seam and work the knife in the direction of the fat end. Once you start, you can actually almost separate it by hand, but keep using the knife. Once you have taken the train off, save it.

Although it is full of tendons and such, it works great to make a beef stock for soup or gravy.

Now that you have the tenderloin, you need to clean off all the silver skin.

Again, with a sharp knife, slide the knife under a large part of the silver skin, parallel with the tenderloin, and slide the knife under the skin until you reach the end. You will have to do this a bunch of times to remove all of it, although it is very easy and really doesn’t take very long. The whole process, as a first timer, shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes. Although beef tenderloin is expensive, it is cheaper by the pound to buy the whole tenderloin. Even if you are only feeding a couple people, you can cut off one hunk to cook this meal, and then with what’s left, you can either portion into individual filet mignon steaks, steak tips, or into a couple more hunks and wrap well and freeze them. Also, at the thin end of the tenderloin, I generally go up a few inches and cut that off and cut them into steak tips.

Let’s get back to cooking. The tenderloin should be seasoned well, depending on your taste. I’m a big fan of salt, pepper, and granulated garlic.

Rub the meat well and all over. You want a hot grill. Spray well with pan release. I would suggest having a meat thermometer handy unless you are an expert griller who can tell the temperature by the feel. Tenderloin is at its best, like most cuts of beef, if cooked medium rare, but I know everyone is different. Here are some good guide lines for what temps you want for your liking.

Let the cooked tenderloin sit for a solid five minutes before slicing for it to retain most of its juices as you will lose a lot if you slice immediately.

That why it is important to remove from the grill a few degrees shy of your desired temp. Once it rests, with a very sharp French knife, slice the tenderloin into 1/8 to 1/4 inch slices. You want it thin, but not so thin you can see through it. You can lightly drizzle the horseradish sauce, (recipe to follow), or many people like a spoonful on the side to dip the beef into. The beef will be tasty and tender, the sauce has great flavor and tang, which go together very well. I would suggest serving with a garlic mashed potato and maybe some grilled zucchini and summer squash.

Horseradish Sauce One part mayonnaise to one part sour cream Add as much horseradish as desired. I am heavy handed with it. Start with a tbsp and taste. Add more as desired.

A few shakes of oregano for flavor That’s it. It will go together in a minute or two. Add the horseradish last to your desired taste. Mix well with a small whisk or with a fork.

1/2 cup or so of shredded parmesan cheese, not grated Coarse black pepper and oregano Angel hair Prep all your veggies that need to be cut, drain the artichoke hearts and cut, and drain the diced tomatoes very well. Once you have cut all of the veggies, cut the chicken. Whenever dealing with chicken, always do that prep last to avoid cross contamination. In a large non-stick sauté pan, line the bottom with the oil, and get to a medium heat. Place the chicken in the oil carefully, so as not to splash yourself. Stir until the chicken is about halfway cooked, then add the fresh vegetables. Continue to move things around, whether by stirring or tossing if you have that experience. Once the veggies start to soften, add the garlic, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, a few strong shakes of black pepper, and 1 tsp of oregano. Sautee for another minute or so and add half of the fresh basil, diced tomatoes and olives and continue to mix well. Once everything is hot, turn the heat to high and add the wine and lemon juice. Let it go for a couple of minutes until the liquid starts to boil and turn off the heat. Add the parmesan cheese and mix very well. This will thicken the sauce somewhat and give it some great flavor. Put a bed of cooked angel hair on the bottom of the dinner plates and spoon the sauté dish over the pasta making sure you get some of the sauce in there as well. Top each plate with what is left of the fresh basil and some of the shredded parmesan. This is a great blend of flavors. I would suggest serving with a nice bread of choice with a garlic infused oil.

After you make your choices for your appetizer, then your salad, and your dinner choice, I have two great options for a light dessert. Both are simple, but decadent.

1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp almond extract…optional 1 bag frozen berries. (I like a mix of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.)

Some fresh berries of choice. I suggest blueberries or raspberries, as they need to be fairly small, as compared to a strawberry.

Phyllo cups. (You can find them in almost any freezer section of any supermarket.)

This dessert comes in bite-size pieces. Phyllo cups are one of my favorite things to cook with. They are very versatile and could be used for cooked appetizers, or a fun dessert. In my experience, most people will eat 4-6 of these. When you purchase the Phyllo cups, they generally come with 15 per package, so plan accordingly. For a couple of people, you can do this with a pint of heavy cream instead of a quart, however, I usually will do a quart because the leftover berry cream makes outstanding shortcakes or the top of a cream pie.

For starters, thaw frozen berries. With a mixer, make whipped cream with the cream, vanilla and confectionary sugar. I generally start on a mediumhigh speed. I love to add a little almond extract as well. Get it to where it is just starting to peak. Turn off the mixer and add as many berries as you would like, considering how much cream you used. I also add some of the berry juice that is in the bag and continue to finish the whipped cream. Do not over mix. Make sure you baby sit it while it is being mixed. Once it starts to peak really nicely, shut it off. You can make this in advance if you would like, but I strongly suggest you don’t fill the cups until close to serving. The cups are crispy, but once they are filled, the cups will soften and after a couple of hours get soft. I originally used a pastry bag, or a Ziplock with a cut-off end to fill the cups. That’s fine, and the presentation is better, but often the berry chunks in the cream will block the hole. I spoon the cream into the cups.

Once it’s in, I top each one with a fresh berry. They are very light, and one of my favorite creations.

Grilled Peach and Plum ala mode 1 plum and 1 half peach per person. Ideally, they should be ripe, but not over ripened. There should be some give when squeezing them - not too firm and not too squishy.

Just a light drizzle of honey and/or maple syrup per person 1-2 scoops of vanilla ice cream per person That is all you need for this simple and delicious dessert. As for the fruit, slice the diameter of each one so you can twist and separate them and remove the pit. They are to be grilled cut side up over high heat. Close the lid.

They won’t take long, and the plums will cook first. If you prefer, put the peaches on a minute or two prior to the plums. The pulp should be warm but don’t overcook. You will not be flipping these over. You want them to squeeze easily, but still be able to be picked up with a set of tongs. Place them in individual bowls. I generally go with two half plums and a half peach per bowl. Drizzle lightly with honey and/or maple syrup and scoop the ice cream over the top.

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper “The Lakes Region has evolved so much over the years,” reflects Frank Roche, president and owner of Roche Realty Group with offices in Meredith and Laconia. “These days we have many cultural attractions, such as great concerts at Meadowbrook (Bank of NH Pavilion), Gunstock with many outdoor offerings, to name but a few, making the area even more attractive for those buying and selling real estate.”

Add to this the beautiful lakes and mountains and recreational choices year round in the area, and there is much to attract second-home owners, as well as year-round residents.

However, the real estate market has not been easy – or consistently predictable – in the past decade or so. The Great Recession saw house prices sway, dip, increase, bottom out and stall…and finally begin to rise once again. While we may not revisit the extremely high prices for vacation and lakefront homes of the past, the real estate market appears to be much healthier these days, which is good news for real estate agents and sellers.

The buyer’s market has transitioned to become more even, but if anything is a frustration for real estate agents and potential buyers, it is the lack of appropriate inventory.

“There is a shortage of affordable waterfront, but buyers shouldn’t be discouraged,” Roche continues. “If you are patient, you can find the secondhome or year round place you want.”

Buyers, whether those looking for a second home or relocating year round to the area, are coming from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and all over the East Coast. Snowbirds from Florida also are looking for warm-weather vacation homes and condominiums in the Lakes Region.

At Maxfield Real Estate, with offices in Wolfeboro, Alton and Center Harbor, agent/broker Randy Parker says a lot of mainland property is selling or has been sold, and island property is being looked at seriously by those who want a second home and don’t mind reaching the property by boat.

“The biggest increase is sales in island properties, and listings are selling faster and at higher prices,” Parker says.

Currently, he goes on to comment, “it is a much, much better advantage to the seller than in the past. Our office is definitely busy this summer.”

It seems, these days, to be more of a seller’s market. A cycle appears to be predictable: seven to eight years of appreciation, then a flattened out period, then a climb back up. “It is a natural reoccurrence,” adds Parker.

There is more buyer confidence in the market, and that should continue to prompt those who want to sell to list their properties. Parker feels that the market will hold strong for at least five to six years, with healthy sales. “It is a good time to sell, with the market continuing to do well.”

For buyers, he suggests buying sooner than later; it is always a gamble to wait.

“Overall, things look good. There is good demand and houses that are well maintained will sell quickly,” says Frank Roche.

The year 2016 was among the best years for a sizeable real estate sales jump in the Lakes Region and throughout New Hampshire. “This year is good as well,” adds Roche. “We started slow but the realtors are seeing an uptick in sales. There is a shortage of affordable waterfront with beach access, a boat dock and views.”

For those who want maintenancefree living – whether they are second-home owners who want to relax vs. cutting the grass and painting the house or seniors who are not into home maintenance as they age, condominium living holds the answer.

“The condo market is strong,” says Roche. “People like the maintenance-free lifestyle.”

New building is once again happening, after a six or seven year time period with little or no new construction in the area.

There are lots of buyers in the area, according to Roche. They are looking for well maintained homes and many have seen newer homes get a clean, fresh look on the Fixer Upper

type television shows. Not as many young people are interested in buying an old/antique home with its need for more upkeep.

Christopher Williams of Lamprey Real Estate Associates in Center Harbor, NH agrees that fewer people are interested in fix-up type homes. Retired folks also are looking for less heavy-duty maintenance in their home.

If the property is in good shape and priced right, Williams says they see homes sell in 10 to 20 days, which is good news for those who want to sell and move on.

Sales seems to be occurring for waterfront properties that are under $1 million and over $2 million, while the $1.5 million range is quieter.

“We have seen a shift in the desire for a lot of waterfront size,” Williams explains. “People seem to want a smaller waterfront area with a bigger, newer home. They want four to five bedrooms so they can have family and friends visit and enjoy the lake. They want a vacation gathering spot to enjoy.”

While it was quieter in the spring, the end of summer has been more active says Williams. He predicts that sales will continue into the fall and winter. “I can gauge how the year will play out by our January sales,” he adds.

If you are considering putting your house on the market, this is a good time to do so, but be aware of some things to do to get the best price and fastest sale. “If sellers want to freshen things up, I suggest spending up to $5,000 to do so, such as painting the house. But if you spend a lot more than that, you may not recover it in the sale because the buyer may want to repaint or redecorate to their

Roche also suggests that making sure your home is in good condition and freshened up will help it to sell quickly. Buyers want to see a good looking, well-kept property and won’t waste their time trying to envision what it could look like if they were willing to spend their time and money on repairs.

Along with all types of homes, from waterfront to island to non waterfront and condominiums, land is seeing an upswing in desirability. “Building lots have increased somewhat,” says Roche.

downs of the real estate market. “My specialty is waterfront property, but I sell all types of residential real estate as well.”

She says the market has been strong this summer. “We are beginning to see an increase in values in both waterfront and non-waterfront.”

Inventory of available properties, however, is low. She says, “We are seeing a lot of activity especially on homes that are newly listed. Clearly there seems to be pent-up demand.”

Indeed, homes that are newly listed seem to stay on the market just days or a few weeks, if properly priced. “If they are well priced, they will sell,” Bradley says.

As well as needing to be well maintained, being realistic about pricing is vital, although the market is slowly changing from a buyer’s to a seller’s market.

Bradley’s advice for someone looking to buy or sell a home? “If you are a seller, be reasonable when you price your property; don’t overprice your home,” she advices. “If you are a buyer, make realistic offers. Do not rush to make decisions, but if you have made a decision, then move forward quickly.”

With today’s new technology, buyers and sellers can shop online for anything from a mansion to island get away or a year round home. “Buyers are now doing their own leg work,” agrees Williams. Gone are the days of looking through paper copies of listings and wondering if you will ever find the right house at the proper price. Websites that list all sorts of indoor and outdoor photos have helped buyers narrow down the choices before going into a real estate office to see the properties. And sellers can get a good idea of what the competition may be in their selling price range.

If you are realistic with pricing, if you know what you want and are willing to be flexible, it is an excellent time to enter the real estate market.

The Lakeside Condo Retirement Home

f you're looking down the road towards retirement and you want to figure out the best place to rest your weary head and back, you might not know you are already living in the best place to retire. Earlier in 2017, bankrate.com did a thorough analysis of which states were the best places to retire, and low and behold, New Hampshire came out on top. The survey looked at a variety of factors, including affordability, crime, taxes and the quality of health care. This report got extensive traction in the mainstream online media, running on sites such as yahoo.com, aol.com and many other websites. But if you ask local real estate professionals, the factor that makes New Hampshire better can’t be quantified in a pie chart or a spreadsheet.

"There's a sense of community, almost like a time warp to 30 years in the past," says Jason McKenna, an agent based in Wolfeboro. "A sense of camaraderie is a comforting feeling where people still greet one another with a hello when passing by whether they know you or not."

"To escape to a location where you can enjoy all four seasons with a variety of activities during each season is a consistent thing we hear from those looking to retire here," stays Brie Stephens, a real estate agent in Meredith.

Quality of life is a big factor for those looking to retire, and for many of those people, doing yard work and building maintenance is not high on the priority list. For those people, a condominium makes a lot of sense. Here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, we’re fortunate to have a wide scope of condominiums to choose from, many of which offer lake access for those who would rather go boating or fishing than mow the grass.

Hidden away on Pine River Pond in Wakefield is a condo association known as Michawanic Village. Besides sporting low Wakefield taxes, the area boast a sandy beach, tennis courts and a pool. Condo prices tend to range from the mid $300,000 to high $400,000 depending on the view but are all surrounded by vast 100 year old pines that really make an impression.

“If you’re looking to be on Lake Winnipesaukee, there are certainly plenty of options to choose from,” says Susan Bradley of Coldwell Banker in Laconia. “There are some wonderful associations around the lake.

Associations like Broadview Condominiums have beautiful views, docks, tennis courts, fireplaces and garages. They are perfect for year-round living. Samoset is a terrific association with a mix of seasonal and year round living. Amenities include docks, pools, tennis, clubhouse and playground.

The World of Art at The Art Place Story & Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper

ometimes the best things happen by accident or stem from an impetuous decision. You might be going along in your day-to-day life and decide to take a turn, or step inside a shop to browse just because you have never been there before, and voila! You discover something entirely new and wonderful.

Such was the case when I went shopping in Wolfeboro on a weekday in September. I stopped in the downtown area, parked my car and made my way to Cate Park, a beautiful spot on a late summer day. Before I started shopping, I sat and relaxed, watching the boat traffic on the nearby lake and sipping a cup of coffee.

After enjoying the serenity of the park, I decided to take a stroll along the Main Street of Wolfeboro. It was a gloriously September afternoon, and I was aware the days are slipping towards autumn. Wolfeboro has always been my favorite town to visit in the summer, and with no destination in mind other than to browse the shops, I thought I would take my time and simply enjoy the day.

I didn’t get far, and it is not because the downtown has little to offer. Quite the opposite in fact; with everything from iced tea to ice cream, sandwiches to sandals and magazines to coffee mugs to every sort of item imaginable, you can find a lot in Wolfeboro.

My stroll ended at the Art Place, and this gallery/shop is why I didn’t get far on my tour of the downtown. I hadn’t planned to go to any art galleries; it was a happy accident that saw me step into the world of art – all kinds of beautiful art – on that particular day.

The shop is cozy, but owner Barbara Gibbs has managed to fill the walls with a variety of paintings, prints and photography, and has made it a welcoming place, but definitely not cluttered. I was aware the gallery represented the work of Lakes Region artist Peter Ferber, among others, and I found a wide variety of his work adorning the walls.

tured at The Art Place and if this were the only reason for visiting, it would be worthwhile, although there are many other great works of art here as well.

The shop is set up in a series of rooms – first a gallery space with Lauren and Erik’s work and the work of other artists, and then a large room filled with Peter Ferber’s work. The last space is dedicated to more artwork, but is also a place where a variety of framing choices are displayed, and where you can have your artwork custom framed my Barbara and her staff.

Barbara was behind the counter in the frame shop portion of The Art Place and she was eager to discuss the shop and the world of art in general. As I gazed around, I realized this just might be the place to get a skilled opinion of a painting I own. (I recently bought a less-than-mint-condition scenic painting at a yard sale and never quite knew what to do with it, so it was still in a bag in my car.)

I hurried back to my car and returned with the large unframed painting.

“I don’t know anything about it; it doesn’t appear to be signed and it has a scratch on the surface in one spot. And it is dirty from age. I can’t tell if it is a painting or some sort of print with raised areas of paint,” I told Barbara apologetically.

Right away her curiosity was piqued. She studied the surface with a magnifying tool that allows her to see the details. “It is definitely a painting,” she told me. “And I would say it is from the 1800s.” We discussed the time period of art and scenic painting and she suggested various frames that would look attractive. I was amazed that Barbara could easily choose a frame from among the many at her disposal that perfectly offset the painting while not overpowering it.

While I was in the gallery/shop, I asked Barbara to tell me a little about her background, and how she came to own a business dedicated to artwork.

“I have been in this location for 25 years,” she told me. “But I have been in business for 36 years; I was located in Alton before I moved here.”

While still located in Alton, Barbara had a satellite shop in Wolfeboro, but decided to move the operation to Wolfeboro in 1992.

“I am a New Hampshire native, from the Tilton area originally,” she continued. “I was a teacher with a minor in art. I eventually took more courses to become a certified picture framer.”

The framing, she explains, is done carefully and it is a hands-on process and time consuming. Her husband, Walter Gibbs, also is a framer in the shop.

One of Barbara’s featured artists is Peter Ferber and she says his lake themed art is very popular. With a high degree of realism, combined with unique views of Lakes Region themes, Peter’s work is very sought-after by many collectors.

Because the gallery walls are covered with a variety of paintings, watercolors, prints and more, I wondered how many artists are represented by the gallery and how Barbara chooses them. “We represent about 15 artists in the gallery. Now and then, if I see art that I like, I add a new artist when a space comes open,” she explains. “I have to select the artists carefully, because this is a traditional gallery, and I know what kind of work will sell here.”

Lauren Sansaricq and Erik Koeppel are perfect examples of the sort of artists Barbara chooses to represent. She might see the work, or get a suggestion from a collector.

When I mentioned that I love Lauren and Erik’s paintings, Barbara led me to the portion of the gallery featuring their work. Clearly Barbara knows what she is talking about when it comes to fine art, and she pointed out aspects of the paintings that only increased my enjoyment of the work.

Pastoral scenes of fields and here and there a grazing cow or a tranquil lake or mountains are all painted skillfully by Lauren and Erik, and Barbara said that they are fast becoming widely respected well beyond the borders of the United States.

“We also feature limited edition original prints by a number of artists,” Barbara went on to explain. Indeed, there are wonderful prints, here, there and everywhere in the shop!

Walter and their team are up late and their work to ready the gallery is always worth the effort. Barbara explains, “I love the time spent the night before an opening, pulling out all the original paintings and finally getting to see them all as one unified show of works.

We work after The Art Place’s norBarbara Gibbs, the owner of The Art Place mal hours (into the night) to arrange and hang the paintings. This often involves rearranging the entire gallery to make room for new paintings. I’m sure if you stood outside the door, you could hear all of us hammering away on the walls!”

Along with custom framing, representing the artists in the gallery and keeping up with finding new artists now and then, Barbara also believes that taking part in community art events is very important. The Art Place is one of the galleries in Wolfeboro that participates in the Wolfeboro Art Walk held during the spring and summer on one late afternoon a month. The participating galleries offer live music, refreshments and of course, a chance to see the work each shop/gallery is featuring. The final Art Walk of the season will be held on Saturday, September 30 from 4 to 7 pm at The Art Place, The Sandy Martin Gallery, The Kalled Gallery, Azure Rising and others. Artists whose work is represented in the gallery give demonstrations from time to time at The Art Place. It is worth following The Art Place on Facebook to discover when demonstrations by your favorite artists might be taking place so you can chat with talented painters such as Peter Ferber in person and see them creating a painting before your eyes.

I could have spent the entire afternoon in The Art Place, gazing at the paintings of Lauren Sansaricq, Erik Koeppel, Peter Ferber and the other artists whose works grace the walls. I love to study the work of artists and this gallery lets the customer do so, up close, to get the full effect of the beauty and mood created with each brush stroke.

Although things take on a slower pace in the Lakes Region after summer and foliage season, Barbara has plenty of work to do at the gallery yearround. There are always new artists to represent, current work to publicize, customers to tend to and custom framing jobs that keep The Art Place bustling.

I plan to return to the gallery, perhaps when winter brings a slower feeling to the area. I can imagine chatting with Barbara to find out what’s new in the world of art, and enjoying the paintings of the artists and savoring the unique and beautiful world of The Art Place.
