More Than a Pretzel: The Passion, and Hard Work Behind Seacoast Pretzel Company

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper There is no way to describe Matt Brown as anything but a hard-working, powerhouse of energy and ideas, and a true entrepreneur. Matt would shrug off such a description because he would much rather talk about pretzels, which are his passion.

It is fortunate that Matt loves to make pretzels because it is his job as the owner/operator of Seacoast Pretzel Company. On any given day, he works on new pretzel recipes and ways to bring more tasty pretzel goodness to his avid customers.

You might say Matt is in love with pretzels because it is his life’s work. If you find yourself in downtown Wolfeboro on a summer’s day, you could see customers at the take-out window of Seacoast Pretzel enjoying a pretzel or bagel and a refreshing lemonade.

On the other side of the window, Matt and one of his employees would be busy filling orders and offering such pretzels (all made by Matt) as the Classic Soft Pretzel, Everything Soft Pretzel, Garlic Parm Soft Pretzel, or Cinnamon Sugar Soft Pretzel. Each pretzel comes with a choice of sauce or dip (at no extra charge), with flavors in honey mustard, pub mustard, cheese sauce, or vanilla icing.

Matt comments, “Our soft pretzels are made from the finest ingredients with no preservatives added. We use unbleached King Arthur flour, sourced locally. Our pretzels are naturally dairy-free and processed in a nut-free kitchen and made in small batches for

Those who love pretzels know the real thing when they taste it, and the best are Bavarian Pretzels. Matt worked hard to create a pretzel that met those standards, and he says, “Our handmade Bavarian Soft Pretzels are hand-rolled and twisted and are done the authentic and traditional way, dipped in food-safe lye. It gives the texture of a soft-on-the-inside, crisp, hard exterior, mahogany color, and a distinct pretzel flavor.”

Add to this a refreshing lemonade, also handmade from Matt’s own recipe with added flavors from honest-to-goodness, real fruit such as strawberries or blueberries (Matt says

picking blueberries is his hobby and he hand-picks most of the berries used in his lemonade) for a cold, satisfying drink. All lemonades are made with real fruit purees in flavors including Blissful Blueberry, Lucky Lime, Lovely Lavender, Snazzy Strawberry and Classic Lemon.

This is the fifth year for Seacoast Pretzel’s Wolfeboro location, and the business just keeps growing, probably because Matt is open to making and bringing new things to his customers, such as adding bagels as well.

“I went to a lot of breweries in the past and they always had pretzels along with the beer,” Matt says. “I saw an opportunity to make pretzels and exper-

imented on my own. In my mother’s kitchen, I created my own recipe.”

Matt learned a lot about how to make a good pretzel, and he explains that some pretzels you will find on the market are too soft, almost like bread dough. He was careful to avoid that, and his customers say his pretzels taste the way they should, like a traditional Bavarian pretzel. The handmade Seacoast Pretzels have a soft-on-the-inside texture and a crispy outside.

After perfecting his recipe, Matt began a wholesale pretzel business in Rollinsford, New Hampshire. In addition, he soon was operating two food trucks that specialize in pretzels and also feature lemonade on the list of offerings. This helped him expand the business into weddings, parties, corporate events, proms, and other custom orders.

The business was off and running and when he discovered a nice little shop space available at 6 Central Avenue in downtown Wolfeboro, it seemed a natural thing to open at that location.

It has been a resounding success with the heavy traffic of locals and vacationers in downtown Wolfeboro during the warm weather months. What could be better than stopping by Seacoast Pretzel Company to enjoy the pretzels, bagels, and lemonade?

year,” Matt says. “I make Plain, Everything, Dill Pickle, Sweet and Sesame, and Asiago bagels. We even do special flavors from time to time, such as Oreo and Fruity Pebbles bagels.”

Added to the Rollinsford wholesale location and the Wolfeboro shop, the two food trucks can be seen here and there, such as at Sandwich Fair, at beer festivals, Oktoberfest events, and, as Matt says, “a lot of weddings.”

On any given weekend, Matt can get calls from customers holding a wedding or parties. Weddings, in particular, have become popular. Guests love to get a warm pretzel, fresh-squeezed lemonade, fresh brewed iced tea, dips and sauces, and hot beverages from the food truck.

ten during the summer for more. Matt was a vendor at a local farmers market for a time, so he is familiar with Wolfeboro and knows it to be a fun, busy place every summer. “My busiest time is Fourth of July weekend,” he adds.

When making the pretzels at his Rollinsford location and in the Wolfeboro shop, Matt comments that he has never changed his original recipe and that the pretzels are all dairy-, nut-, and soyfree. “I make them on site, and we do between 600 and 900 pretzels a week in Wolfeboro in the summer.”

When asked what makes pretzels so special and popular with his customers, Matt answers, “I think a pretzel is memory-evoking. Our older customers remember getting a good pretzel at a ball game or some other place when they were kids. Their grandchildren may have never had a warm pretzel before, but when they taste one (the Cinnamon Sugar is a kid favorite), they love them.

“We also offer lemonade and iced tea,” Matt adds. New this year Hibiscus Lemonade, an unusual flavor which underscores Matt’s ability to think of new things to please his customers.

New Hampshire Hunting Seasons Open September 1 New Hampshire’s fall hunting seasons kick off on Tuesday, September 1, with the opening of black bear and gray squirrel seasons. Archery seasons for turkey and white-tailed deer get underway on September 15, and the statewide resident Canada goose hunt runs September 1–25.

Highlights of New Hampshire’s hunting seasons can be found in the New Hampshire Hunting and Trapping Digest, which includes hunting season dates, bag limits, check station locations, and more. Hunters and trappers can pick up a free copy at New Hampshire Fish and Game Department headquarters, or at their local license agent.

The Digest can also be viewed online at eregulations.com/newhampshire/ hunting. Other helpful online resources include the most recent Wildlife Harvest Summary Report (wildlife.nh.gov/ hunting-nh/hunting-reports-harvest-summaries) and the Small Game Summary Report (wildlife.nh.gov/ hunting-nh/small-game-and-uplandbird-hunting/small-game-survey).

Hunters look forward to the opening day of deer season all year, and the much-anticipated muzzleloader deer season starts on October 31 and runs for 11 consecutive days. The regular firearms deer-hunting season immediately follows, starting on November 11.

Both the archery and regular firearms seasons for deer will again end one week early in Wildlife Management Unit WMU A. Check the Digest for WMU-specific either-sex deer hunting regulations as well as other expanded deer hunting opportunities. Additional bear hunting opportunities will continue this year, including the ability to take an additional bear in WMUs C1, D2, E, and F with the purchase of an

additional bear tag. This fall’s shotgun turkey season will again run for 7 days (October 12–18) in select WMUs and includes one full weekend.

The following is a general overview of New Hampshire’s fall hunting seasons. Be sure to consult the Digest or visit huntnh.com for additional information.

2026 New Hampshire Hunting Seasons WHITE-TAILED DEER: Archery: September 15–December 15 (ends December 8 in WMU A)—Special archery deer permits must be purchased with hunter’s annual archery licenses; Youth Deer Weekend: October 24–25; Muzzleloader: October 31–November 10; Firearms: November 11–December 6 (ends November 29 in WMU A).

BLACK BEAR: Starts September 1 (end date varies by WMU).

GRAY SQUIRREL: September 1, 2026–January 31, 2027.

SNOWSHOE HARE: October 1, 2026–March 31, 2027 (bag limit varies

by WMU).

RUFFED GROUSE: October 1–De-

cember 31.

MOOSE: October 17–25 (by permit only).

FALL TURKEY: Shotgun: October 12–18 (certain WMUs), Archery: September 15–December 15 (ends December 8 in WMU A).

Apprentice hunting licenses are an option for people age 16 and older who want to try hunting but have not taken Hunter Education, or who have not been able to schedule a field day.

The apprentice hunting license allows unlicensed people to hunt under the guidance of a licensed hunter age 18 or older. Apprentice licenses are available only at NH Fish and Game Headquar-

Help our herd. As the fall hunting seasons begin, the NH Fish and Game Department asks hunters not to use natural urine-based deer lures. These products can potentially spread chronic wasting disease (CWD), a neurological disorder that is always fatal to white-tailed deer and moose. Synthetic lures are suggested. Do your part and help keep our deer herd free of CWD. Learn more at wildlife.nh.gov/wildlife-and-habitat/wildlife-related-diseases/deer-diseases.

Hunters should remember to take proper care when handling wild game to minimize possible exposure to wildlife diseases. First and foremost, hunters should avoid harvesting or handling any animal that appears sick.

Where Art Meets the Wild: Jill Mahan Finds Inspiration in Animal Tracks

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper For anyone who loves unique art, Jill Mahan’s work offers something wonderful and different.

Jill, a graphic artist in the Lakes Region, creates animal track art that draws the viewer’s eye. Her business, Animal Track Design, offers products for children and adults, including activity books, note cards, and other items.

Everything in the line is created by Jill, all drawn using animal tracks as a foundation. To understand her work, it helps to see it. (See the accompanying photo with caption explanation.)

Jill lives in Belmont, New Hampshire, and graduated with a degree in graphic design from Lakes Region Community College in 1999. After graduation, she worked in a local print shop and later enrolled at Plymouth State University, receiving a BA and graduating cum laude.

Having lived in the Lakes Region nearly all of her life, Jill has a deep connection to the area and is proud of her roots here. She says, “My great-great-grandfather was Leander Lavalley, at one time the owner and captain of the MS Mount Washington in the early 1900s.”

Like many artists, Jill’s work reflects her life. One person she met along the way led to her current art using animal tracks: “My boyfriend, the former Dick Click, from Belmont, was a hunter (he passed away from cancer in 2016). I had never hunted before, but he took me out with him, and it got me inter-

That was the start of her unique idea to create pictures using outlines of various animal tracks. As Jill and her boyfriend traveled “all over the state” for hunting and fishing, she noticed tracks everywhere. Each new track she spotted added to the list she could use in her artwork.

As time passed, with her experience and knowledge of printing and graphic arts, Jill began to create a line of products using the art she made with animal

track outlines. “I think of animal tracks as forms to fill a space and to create subject matter,” she says.

Information on Jill’s website, boldsparkdesign.com, explains it best: “Jill’s artistic journey began with a deep connection to the natural world.

Inspired by her experiences hunting and fishing in the New Hampshire woods, she noticed the intricate patterns left by animals—tracks in the snow, impressions in the soil. These observations led to the creation of her signature collection: the Wild Animal Tracks Note Cards.”

With the success of her popular note cards, Jill began to plan more products offering unique art which she created with track outlines. Customers can choose from cards with images of Cardinals, Red Lobsters, Largemouth Bass, and Monarch Butterflies, to name just a few options. Floral lovers can opt for Pink Lady Slipper, Mushrooms, Lupines, and many others.

Jill was never one to stick to a single product, so she soon branched out to create more options using her animal

track art, such as activity books and calendars. The Wild Animal Tracks Collection features designs inspired by the tracks of various animals, each telling a story of movement and presence.

The collection reflects Jill’s ability to find art in the everyday, transforming simple observations into meaningful designs.

Jill also maintains a full-time, busy job at the State of New Hampshire Department of Safety, designing forms used by government offices. In her spare time, she can be found creating products and art for Animal Track Designs from her home studio.

Jill creates notecards, activity books, coloring books, stickers, bookmarks, and more to prepare for the fairs where she sells her products. A 2027 calendar makes a great gift and uses beautiful designs, such as a cardinal with information about the bird. The calendar includes an image for each month of the year, such as a Celtic Cross in March and flowers in May, among others. The calendar will be available at her booth in the craft building at this year’s Sandwich Fair in Sandwich, New Hampshire, taking place Oct. 10 – 12.

Jill participates in a number of fairs where her products are popular with adults as well as youngsters. (She has been doing craft fairs since 2014.) She says, “I will be at Sandwich Fair as well as the Gilford High School Christmas Fair and a Christmas Fair in Belmont, among others.”

She continues, “As well as the fairs, I also sell at the wholesale level and online at my website.” Jill also does freelance graphics, logos, magazines and more in her spare time.

Annual Museum Open House, Boat Tour Planned in Meredith As summer winds down, the local historical society has announced two popular annual events to celebrate another successful season.

First up is the Meredith Historical Society’s annual open house, which will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 5-7 pm at Meredith’s Main Street Museum.

Then during the second and third weeks of September, the society will again offer its popular historic boat tours on Lake Winnipesaukee. Tours are planned for Tuesdays, Sept. 8 and 15, with rain dates on the respective Thursdays, Sept. 10 and 17.

The annual open house begins at 5 pm on September 1. In addition to tours of the society’s Main Street Museum, members will serve up free hot dogs, chips, and other goodies. Featured will be this year’s new museum displays featuring Leander Pynn’s Ford garage on Main Street, and another highlighting artwork of former Meredith artist Peter Hall. Historical Society board members and volunteers will be on hand to chat and answer any questions you might have.

Additionally, local author and MHS President John Hopper will be on hand to sign copies of his new book on Meredith Village’s historic mill yard.

This year’s boat cruises will depart from the Goodhue Marina (formerly Shep Brown’s) on Meredith Neck at 12:30 pm. Dates are Tuesday, Sept.

8 (rain date Thursday, Sept. 10), and Tuesday, Sept. 15 (rain date Thursday, Sept. 17). This year’s tours will visit the waters along the eastern border of Meredith, including cruising past Black Cat, Three Mile, Five Mile and Six Mile Islands. Historical commentary will be provided by Jane Rice and John Hopper. Each cruise will be limited to 40 passengers aboard the ship Bear II, provided courtesy of Camps Lawrence and Nokomis.

Craft Classes at the Meredith League of NH Craftsmen Join the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery for fun and exciting craft classes!

On Friday, September 4, from 10 am - 1 pm, juried artist Becky Sawyer will teach a Make Your Own Earrings class. Students are invited to join Becky Sawyer as she guides you through the process of creating earrings from shrink plastic and colored pencil. Whether you have a design in mind from the get-go or decide to figure it out as you draw, the techniques in this class will let you turn your creative ideas into hand-illustrated accessories. Drawing experience is helpful but not required. All materials, including the shrink plastic and a toaster oven to harden it, will be provided for use during the workshop. Students will complete a pair of one-of-a-kind earrings ready to wear or give as a special gift. This class is excellent for beginners, and no prior experience is required. Tuition is $65 per student. Students are encouraged to bring art, photos, or other visuals to use as inspiration for their drawings.

Students can make single stone rings or multiple stone rings. All materials will be provided, though students may bring their own gemstones or silver to use. Hannah Gage will teach a Felted Birch Landscape class. In this beginner-friendly class, fiber artist Hannah Gage will guide students through the process of creating a small (approximately 4x6 inch), simple birch tree scene using needle felting techniques. The focus will be on layering wool to create clean lines and natural texture, capturing the distinctive look of birch trunks and forest elements. All materials, including wool and felting tools, will be provided for use during the workshop. Students will complete a finished felted piece that can be framed later. No prior experience is necessary—just an interest in learning a new fiber art technique.

Students should bring water and a snack if desired. Tuition is $40 with a $25 materials fee.

Revealing the Night Sky: Astrophotography with Joe Dechene Do you ever wonder how those pretty photos of night sky celestial objects are made? Joe Dechene, a local avid astronomer and telescope maker, will be the featured speaker at the Effingham Public Library’s weekly Coffee Hour on Wednesday, September 9. He’ll display his portfolio and describe his journey into astrophotography, starting in the days of film and manual guiding to modern digital imaging. He will describe his homemade and modified equipment, techniques, and challenges needed to render details invisible to the naked eye.

Joe will be offering tips on how you can start photographing the night sky by using your phone or camera and a tripod. He’ll help us understand the

tools, methods, and beauty of astrophotography; in the hopes you may be inspired to explore your own night-sky photography.

Joe is a member and past president of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society and a member of The Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMoB), a club founded in 1934 and that meets at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Joe is a much sought-after speaker on the building of telescopes. He was recently honored in the Master Class category with a 1st Place award for Mechanical Design, First Place for Craftsmanship and Innovative Component for his wooden 100 mm Binoscope at the prestigious 2024 Stellafane Convention.

In addition to building telescopes for each of his three children, Joe enjoys photography, cycling, and playing hockey. He and his wife, Maggie, live in the iconic gingerbread house in Effingham.

The Effingham Public Library, 30 Town House Road, is a “community center with books,” located in a

The Polar Caves Are a Must-See Attraction in Rumney

By Tom Caldwell The town of Rumney, lying in the Baker River Valley of Central New Hampshire, is a popular destination for visitors seeking recreational activities such as rock-climbing, hiking, and exploring the nine granite caves that make up Polar Caves.

The park has been a family-owned attraction since 1922.

Unlike limestone caverns, formed by flowing water that erodes the rock, the Rumney “caves” were formed by the continental glacier that moved southward over New Hampshire during the last Ice Age, between 26,000 and 10,000 years ago, leaving behind a series of boulders as the ice sheet thawed and dislodged granite from what today is known as Hawk’s Cliff. The space between those boulders form the passages that visitors can explore.

Some of the caves require people to duck, while others, such as the famous Lemon Squeeze, which narrows to 14 inches, and Orange Crush, require visitors (or at least those able to do so) to squeeze through.

Polar Caves also boasts what is purported to be the largest glacially deposited granite boulder in the world: 110 feet long, 50 feet high, and 75 feet thick. It is estimated to weigh 25,000 tons.

According to Polar Caves lore, Edwin Collishaw realized the money-making potential of the natural wonder when his son discovered a snow-filled cave in June and brought some of it home in

a leather baseball cap. Edwin and four other families pooled their resources to open the caves as a tourist attraction.

One of the young daughters (about 10 years old) would meet tourists at the Rumney Train Depot and, providing overalls or coats and boots, would lead them on tours of the caves, crawling through them with a lantern.

Two of the five families that initially invested in the attraction continue to serve on the Polar Caves Board of Directors today.

The founders came up with the name Polar Caves due to the “polar breath” visible in the morning, when the temperature difference between inside and outside the cave sends mist pluming out between the rocks.

Over the years, Polar Caves has moved away from a “tourist trap” operation to focus on the caves as a natural attraction, teaching visitors about their natural history in a park-like setting.

Visitors of all ages have an opportunity to experience the wonder and excitement of exploration while learning about geology in a safe way.

Before visitors enter the cave system, a staff member gives a safety talk, and the caves are illuminated with designated walkways to ensure their safety while allowing people to explore at their own pace. Anyone finding the passage too confining will be able to take advantage of cave bypasses.

board intricately trimmed to be perfectly flush with the rock face itself. Some of the caves are accessed by metal ladders.

Visitors are welcome to bring along a lunch, with a picnic area, gazebos, and benches located throughout the park. Alongside the boardwalk are local fauna growing on granite boulders with limited topsoil: various ferns and lichens, including Goldilocks moss, reindeer lichen (a species that looks like tiny reindeer), sphagnum moss (which is antimicrobial), pixie cup lichen, British Soldier lichen (appearing to have little red coats), and wild blueberries. An underbrush tree from the maple family is a favorite food of moose, which are said to eat as much as 40 pounds of it a day.

There also are animal exhibits in the park, featuring European fallow deer, which are smaller than the white-tailed deer that are native to New England.

The fallow deer, originally from Turkey, typically grow to be three feet tall and five feet long, and may be brown, white, or spotted.

There also are native ducks, and both deer and ducks can be fed treats available at the main lodge.

As for the chance to see polar bears?

“Our deer and ducks scared them off.”

The boulder caves are the main attraction, of course, with the Boulder Maze providing a fun adventure among the other glacial granite formations. In addition to the Lemon Squeeze and Orange Crush, the caves include the Polar

Pinch, which some taller guests may find requires bending low and negotiating the turns on their hands and knees.

The Mysterious Hanging Boulder, with 70 percent of its mass hovering in the air, has a huge vein of pegmatite, corresponding with the pegmatite veins on the face of Hawk’s Cliff. Legend has it that the daughter of an indigenous chief stood on top of the cliffs while a large bear clawed the cliffs, and the pegmatite veins are the marks it left behind.

Other attractions include the Ice Cave, where ice may still be present in August; Fat Man’s Misery, a crevice that forms an ice dam, backing up slowly draining water; Raven’s Roost; King Tut’s Tomb and The Pyramid; the Council Chamber; Cool Off and Rest; the Bear’s Den; the Devil’s Turnpike; and the Needle’s Eye. The path to the caves is lined with nature carvings, including one by “Carver Alex” that features black bears in the heartwood of a dead tree and peregrine falcons at the tree’s apex. More carvings are displayed on a covered bridge.

The Maple Lodge Welcome Center has a gift shop with souvenirs and snacks, as well as restrooms and a water bottle filling station. The walls are lined with rocks and minerals (including fool’s gold), a maple sugaring exhibit, animal skulls and pelts, and a television that plays animal videos captured from on-site trail cameras.

Because the attraction is built into the side of a mountain with multiple changes in elevation requiring inclined paths and stairs, and with limited paved surfaces, strollers, wheelchairs, and scooters have difficulty navigating the terrain and are discouraged. However, the main concourse with the Animal Park is gravel-covered and so is partially accessible, depending on the type of wheels.

Polar Caves asks that those with physical disabilities limiting mobility, or who are accompanied by registered

guide dogs, contact the office in advance.

Visitors should wear closed-toed shoes appropriate for uneven terrain and plan for two hours to see the entire park; the caves take about an hour for most guests.

The Polar Caves are open daily from May until mid-October, with doors opening at 9 am and the last caves entry at 4:30 pm. The gift shop and park close at 6 pm. Because admission is first-come, first-served, booking ahead by phone or online is recommended, but Polar Caves does take last-minute reservations. As raptors begin their incredible annual migration to wintering grounds, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will host its Raptor Migration Celebration on Saturday, September 19, from 10 am to 4 pm. The all-ages event will give visitors the opportunity to learn about raptor migration, observe live birds of prey, and participate in a community science project to track migrating hawks.

The event will feature three Birds of Prey presentations by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) at 11 am, 12 pm, and 1 pm. VINS will introduce visitors to live raptor ambassadors and explore the seasonal movements of birds of prey, including where raptor species travel for the winter, how long their migrations take, and why they make these annual journeys.

Each presentation will include a flight demonstration featuring a raptor.

Visitors can also participate in a Hawk Watch, helping document migrating raptors as they pass through the region. Participants will scan the skies for hawks and other birds of prey, recording their observations and learning

to identify different species. Kids’ activities will give budding ornithologists a fun, hands-on introduction to raptor identification. Data collected during the Hawk Watch will be submitted to the Hawk Migration Association’s North American raptor migration database, contributing to a broader understanding of raptor populations and migration patterns and helping inform conservation efforts.

“Our annual Raptor Migration Celebration is a wonderful way to connect people of all ages with wildlife, conservation, and the wondrous journeys raptors take every fall,” said Iain MacLeod, Executive Director of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. “We are thrilled to welcome our partners from VINS to share their incredible raptor ambassadors and expertise with our community.”

The Raptor Migration Celebration is included with regular trail admission.

Young Artists Keep Creating This Fall at Makers Mill After a busy summer of youth art workshops, Makers Mill is expanding opportunities for young artists to continue learning and creating this fall with two new 4-week Art Fundamentals series beginning September 9.

Led by artist and instructor Jennifer MacLean, the programs give students an opportunity to move beyond a single art project and develop foundational skills from week to week. Classes will explore drawing, painting, and mixed media while introducing concepts including perspective, color theory, blending, shading, and a variety of artistic techniques.

The Art Fundamentals for Youth Homeschoolers series is designed for ages 6–13 and meets Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 pm. The Afterschool Art Fundamentals for Youth series is designed for ages 8–13 and meets Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 pm. Both series run September 9, 16, 23, and 30.

MacLean brings an unusual combination of artistic and professional experience to the classroom. A Tuftonboro native and Kingswood High School graduate, she leads the Leather Circle at Makers Mill and is a member of its Fine Arts Circle.

She teaches Adaptive Arts, Paint Your Pet, leatherworking, and a variety of youth art programs. Her previous career as an Occupational Therapist and Speech-Language Pathologist continues to inform her thoughtful, adaptive, and student-centered approach to teaching.

The four-week series costs $150, plus a $25 materials fee covering supplies for all four sessions, including a sketchbook each student will receive on the first day.

Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Registration closes two days before the first session.

Discover The Moffat-Ladd House As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, it’s only appropriate that we learn more about those who signed the Declaration of Independence – who they were, what they did and where they lived. William Whipple, a Portsmouth merchant and ship’s Captain, was one of the three brave men who risked being charged with treason by signing the Declaration. He lived in the Moffat-Ladd House, now a museum with beautiful gardens, restored and maintained by the National Society of the Colonial Dames in America in the State of NH. The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand concerts take place each Saturday night in the summer months, weather permitting, in the bandstand, located in Cate Park in downtown Wolfeboro on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. Billy D and the Rock-its will be in the bandstand on Saturday, Sept. 5, wrapping up the summer season with the Labor Day weekend concert.
